FACE’s famous Christmas market has a new venue FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) are pleased to announce that their Annual Christmas Market will be held on Friday, December 5, from 6pm. This year the market has a new venue in a marquee erected especially for the event on the fairground near Arboleas Town Hall. There will be a vast variety of stalls with wares including perfume, jewellery, kitchenware, television android boxes, Christmas cards and wrapping paper, bedding, clothing, pet accessories, as well as those last-minute Christmas gifts. Father Christmas has been contacted and it is hoped that he will be in attendance, even though this is his busiest time of the year. In addition there will be a Christmas tombola and a grand

Urgent foster homes wanted for puppies SAN ANIMAL SANTUARIO in San Juan de los Terreros has asked Euro Weekly News for help in finding foster homes for seven pups. A few weeks ago San Animal Santuario was contacted about these seven puppies. They are desperately looking for foster homes for them prior to finding their forever homes. A disused building
became the mother dog’s nesting place, and the neighbours of the building’s elderly owner have helped out temporarily. Unfortunately, the puppies are getting more agile every day which is becoming too much for them and causing huge problems with their own dogs. The mother has now ceased feeding them
therefore they are able to go to separate homes. They are two months old and are showing their own personalities and individual identities. Almeria welcomes cruise ships ALMERIA capital welcomed the cruise ship Massdam, a 220 metre long vessel from the Holland America line. Aboard were 1,260 passengers ready to disembark for a few hours on the first stop after Lanzarote and before they moved on to Valencia later the same day. The municipal tourism service
had provided an informative walk from the dock side, accompanied by the councillor for Tourism, Isabel Fernandez, allowing the visitors to explore the capital in the sunshine, taking in historical points of interest and enjoying a visit to Gastro Arte in the market area. Following the visit of Massdam, the cruise ship Wind
Surf arrived with 347 passengers on board. The ship arrived from Cartagena and cruise passengers had an entire day to explore the city and to grab some shopping before leaving for its next destination of Malaga. LOCAL POLICE and firefighters rescued a dog that had fallen into an eight metre hole in the Piedras Redondas district of Almeria City. The dog was taken to a vet to check for its microchip.
Playground work ALMERIA City’s council has approved the remodelling of the children’s playground in Plaza San Pedro. The work is expected to last approximately three months and has a budget of €239,498.64.
Child friendly VICAR has been given the title of ‘child friendly town’ by UNICEF for its continued work for the rights of children. The title is to be reviewed in 2018 when it may be given permanently.
Multipurpose centre HUERCAL DE ALMERIA is to get a new multipurpose centre with a cash injection of €330,316.59 from the province. The remaining €65,907.87 is funded by the town council. New business HUERCAL DE ALMERIA now has 44 new businesses and 61 jobs through the support of CADE (Centre for Entrepreneurial Development). CADE provides services to 18,000 inhabitants.

WO very determined Spanish videogame players have made it into the Guinness World Records 2015 Gamer’s Edition - known to fans as the ‘gaming bible.’ Released this month, the book recognises the world’s most staggering records from the hugely popular world of video gaming, such as ‘Fastest Car in a Videogame,’ ‘Most Game of the Year Awards’ and ‘Most Costly Pac-Man Game.’ Featured among the pages of the book are two Spanish gaming enthusiasts who have immersed themselves so much in their respective hobbies that they are now world record beaters.

New works for safety HUERCAL OVERA Council has announced a number of improvements to take place in the town. Mayor of the town, Domingo Fernandez, told Euro Weekly News: “We have developed projects in response to the various requests of the residents of Huercal Overa, requests that have come in various ways, either through the suggestion box or in person at the various meetings we have had in the different districts.” The mayor continued by explaining that the works were an extension of improvements carried out last year, including new cycle paths linking key areas of the town. One of the major plans for the town, in response to complaints about speeding vehicles, is the installation of speed bumps, and the replacement or refurbishment of street equipment that doesn’t meet current laws. New pedestrian crossings are also planned. Additional work includes pavement restoration in Calle Palmera, Paraje la Molineta, Los Menas, La
Concepcion, Calle Pintor Velazguz and Calle Hernan Cortes. In response to requests for facilities for Huercal Overa’s children, parks will be addressed. New parks will be built in El Saltador, Los Navarros, La Molineta, La Hoya, Santa Maria de Nieva and San Francisco. Finally, improvements to street lighting will be carried out with more

Tradition or torture? – Bull festival shocks world
F
RIGHTENING images of one of Spain’s lesser known festivals made the pages of several European newspapers this week, showing a terrified young bull charging around a makeshift bullring with burning stakes strapped to his horns. Caked in mud, the pictures of the bull in the dark night illuminated only by the burning balls of tar attached to his head could have come straight from some hellish vision of the Apocalypse. Clashes between animal rights activists and police brought the Joy of the Bull festival - in Spain’s Soria region - to the attention of the world, with widespread condemnation from most quarters. The annual festival has been deemed a “cultural highlight” in the village of Medinaceli, but has also been called a “sadistic festival” by animal rights group PETA. There has long been debate about
Spain’s treatment of bulls, particularly due to the popularity of bullfighting in the country. Whatever your thoughts on this famous Spanish tradition, most people would share the opinion that the Joy of the Bull festival is no doubt cruel. The bull is taunted and jeered as flaming hot tar burns precariously close to its head. Once the bull is exhausted, he is removed from the ring to be slaughtered and eaten by festival participants. The debate about bullfighting in Spain will be waged for some time to come, but we think most people with a modicum of common sense would agree that events like the Joy of the Bull festival are in no way fair to the animal. Just because it’s an ancient tradition doesn’t make it okay to torture and frighten a creature in such a manner. Like the majority of outside observers, we think it should be stopped.

Appeal fails to prevent demolitions in Cantoria TWO homes belonging to British families have been demolished in Las Terreras, Cantoria. They were torn down despite a public outcry and constant appeals on humanitarian grounds from AUAN (Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No) and SOHA (Save Our Homes Axarquia), which fight legal battles on behalf of
homeowners who were duped into buying illegal properties. At the final hour, the last appeal was rejected and the demolition began at noon on Tuesday November 18. AUAN said 15 municipalities in the Almanzora Valley have approved a manifesto which pleads for the human rights of the
property owners, and for them to receive compensation prior to demolition. They consider that the Junta de Andalucia regional government is responsible, at least in part, for the existence of hundreds of thousands of illegal houses. In addition, they therefore should not turn their back on the problem by permitting the continued
drip-feed of demolition orders. They also declare that foreign buyers should be protected, given that they suffer disproportionately the rigours of planning laws, in spite of having bought in good faith. The municipalities understand that the end does not justify the means and nothing is achieved with these demolitions.

We here at EWN are marking the occasion by printing the movement’s logo on the front cover of each of our six editions this week. According to Spain’s Ministry of Health, Social Security and Equality, so far this year 43 women have lost their lives at the hands of their partner or ex-partner. Only 13 had previously reported being victims of abuse.
The aim of the international campaign is to raise aware-ness of the fact that women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence on a daily basis; in fact, it has been estimated that one in three women will suffer some form of violence or physical or psychological abuse during their lives. Recognised officially by the United Nations in 1999, November 25 was previously adopted to mark the assassination of three political activist sisters in the Dominican

Fake quad theft report found out OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil in Huercal Overa have arrested a man for falsifying a crime report. Officers arrested a 46year-old resident of Huercal Overa on suspicion of falsely
declaring a crime. Agents were aware that a quad bike was involved in an accident in Puerto Lumbreras in Murcia. As a result of the accident, the 25-year-old driver had to be taken to Rafael Mendez de Lorca
Sex chat line use results in arrest IN just 18 days a man made 16 calls to premium rate sex chat lines using his roommate’s credit card. He made up to four calls per day, with some calls costing €100 and totalling €960. The victim spotted the charges on his bank statements and went to police for help. Police were able to trace the charges to a premium rate sex chat line and began investigations to narrow down the suspects. Their investigations soon led them to HT, roommate of the victim. HT was arrested and faces his day in court.

Fraudsters arrested AGNETS of the Tax Agency (AEAT) and the Anti-corruption office have arrested 23 people, part of a criminal network working in Andalucia, Castilla la Mancha and Madrid.

Armed robbery POLICE in Almeria City are investigating an alleged armed robbery at Entremares restaurant. According to police, five men all wearing balaclavas, stormed into the restaurant at closing time. Two of the men who carried guns approached the bar and demanded money, while the other three men guarded the exits. The five men then fled on foot.

Three oil thieves arrested OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil in Garrucha have arrested three people suspected of an ongoing theft of oil marked for recycling. The investigation, called Oro Verde (Green Gold) has established that the detainees carried out the thefts in Almeria City, Carboneras, El Ejido, Garrucha, Mojacar, Turre and Vera. It is believed to have involved more than 40,000 litres of oil with a value of €20,000. According to the Guardia Civil, the thieves posed as employees of a company within the recycling industry. One of the thieves had previously worked within the industry so knew the location of containers, in addition to sales and distribution channels.
OIL RECYCLING: The company responsible for collection noticed a decline. They used a private vehicle without official authorisation, carrying plastic 100 litre barrels, and transported the stolen oil to a storage facility of a private residence in La Cañada de San Urbano.
The investigation began in July 2014 when the company responsible for the collection of the waste oil, which was to be used for recycling into biodiesel fuel and environmentally friendly oils, reported a decline
in the quantity of approximately 50 per cent. Details of the 38, 43 and 50-year-old detainees have been passed to Vera Magistrate along with the case details.

Police deny any pet poisoning MARCOS MUÑOZ, the Director of Civil Protection of the Local Police in El Ejido has denied allegations by the IU political party in the town which claimed a “proliferation of animal poisonings.” The IU party had claimed that a large number of residents had complained about animals being poisoned when tainted foods had been left in Plaza Antonio Navarrete and pointed to
a poster that had been displayed in the square warning of poison. Marcos Muñoz responded to the reports by categorically stating: “There are no complaints from owners of pets that animals have been poisoned.” Four officers went to the square and found no poisoned food. They interviewed numerous residents and business owners close to the square, but none claimed
to know anything about any poisoning of pets either. The police then checked their databases to see if any complaints had been made, but again nothing showed. El Ejido Town Hall confirmed the square was safe and that the reports were simply unfounded rumours. The police said it was all a misunderstanding and that the square is safe for animals.
Big Brother comes to El Ejido PRESENTER of Spain’s Big Brother TV show, Pedro Garcia Aguado, visited El Ejido to present two conferences. The education themed conferences formed part of an initiative by directors of the parent associations of secondary
schools in El Ejido and Agroiris, a stationery supplier in the town. Aguado, a TV presenter and former athlete regularly works with troubled children, instilling values and ideals to help them enter adulthood.

Bank funding for disabled groups PROYECTO IMPULSOS (Project Impulse) is an initiative that aims to promote the employment of disabled people, improving access to employment opportunities and aiding the principle of equal opportunities. In its third year, the work of the San Sebrian foundation, the Association for the Care of People with Intellectual Disabilities (ADISLI) and the Almeria Federation for Persons with Disabilities (FAAM) has been acknowledged. The three social projects have been given €23,000 each, financed by Banco Popular. The three associations were selected from a list of 52 proposals in a scheme that was overseen by the Konecta Foundation. Since 2012 Banco Popular has worked with Proyectos Impulso, contributing to social inclusion of disabled people and has confirmed its continued support.

Sierra Nevada is on top of the world SIERRA NEVADA is officially one of the best preserved protected areas in the world. It has become the first natural space in Spain to make it onto the UICN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Green List. The announcement was made during the World Parks Congress held in the Australian city of Sydney. The Sierra Nevada, which stretches between Almeria and Granada, houses two national parks and is subject to protection as a green area. It is included in the initial list along with 23 natural parks in Spain, Australia, China, Colombia, France, Italy, Kenya and South Korea. The Green List includes natural areas considered essential for the survival of the planet, which scientists say is threatened by global warming. “The management of the national park of Sierra Nevada successfully balances the preservation of fragile mountain ecosystems and its rich cultural heritage with the dynamics of

These areas must demonstrate that they share, in a fair and transparent manner, the costs and benefits of conservation, effective management and the results of long-term preservation. UICN is an international organisation based in Switzerland, which incorporates governments, associations, foundations, universities and the co-operation of more than 11,000 scientists from around the world.

Palma de Rio in Cordoba have visited Almeria to study the Almeria Model of production, a leader in the European horticultural sector. The Cordoba delegation was particularly interested in improving the quality of fruits and vegetables that Almeria province has achieved with biological control of pests and diseases. They were also
interested in strategies that have been developed to implement integrated production in a high percentage of Almeria farms. The farmers were accompanied by the Cordoba and Almeria delegates for Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment for Cordoba, Francisco Jose Zurera and Jose Manuel Ortiz respectively.
Supporting women CAJAMAR and ALMUR (Association of Women Entrepreneurs in Almeria) have signed a collaborative agreement to support female business owners in the province. Through the agreement, Cajamar offers women entrepreneurs a comprehensive financial package with favourable conditions for administration and repayment. The Rose Singers are well received THE recent concerts by the Rose Singers proved a huge success and a generous donation was given to the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal. The November 6 concert was performed in Camping Los Gallardos and on November 8 the group did a matinee in Mojacar. These were so well received that the Rose Singers have indicated it could become a fixture for future years. As usual with the Rose Singers, the music was varied and sung to the high standard members of the public have come to expect. All genres were covered with the rousing ‘anthem’ from the musical Chess opening the evening and a selection of wartime songs with audience participation to finish. The Rose Singers’ next performance is on December 9

Arrests for employers TWO men have been arrested under suspicion of crimes against workers’ rights, forgery, perjury and fraud. The investigation began after a man was killed at work in Nijar. A crew was required to heft rolls of plastic, weighing up to 200 kilograms, and scale the heights of greenhouses to replace plastic covering. However, health and safety regulations had been ignored as the work was carried out without tethers or safety measures. One of the workers, a 27-year-old man, fell to his death after the frame gave way and he landed with a roll falling on top of him. After taking statements from witnesses, and investigating paperwork, officers discovered that, in addition to the lack of health and safety attention, the company had forged paperwork after the worker’s death to register him as an employee. IVN aged 26, and RM aged 29, also gave false information to the police, resulting in perjury being added to their crimes.

Cataluña verdict from Fitch quick to arrive THE Fitch ratings agency’s reaction to Cataluña’s recent consultative vote on independence was quick to arrive. Fitch analysed the effects on both Spain and Cataluña of three possible scenarios. The most likely, according to the agency, is further devolution and tax-setting powers like those of the Basque Region and Navarra. In general terms this would have a ‘mildly positive’ effect on Spain’s sovereign credit. Full independence would, in contrast, have negative consequences
for Spain’s sovereign rating, as even an orderly breakup would present risks for the national economy. A disorderly separation would be still worse, Fitch said. The third scenario, a continuation of the protracted tension between Madrid and Barcelona, would be little better, and could trigger loss of short-term deposits that would particularly affect Catalan banks. This would increase the cost of funding and prompt a reduction in capital expenditure as a protective measure, Fitch warned.

Bigger cushions for biggest banks THE world’s 30 largest banks will be told to provide themselves with big loss-absorbing liability cushions. These banks, which include Spain’s Santander and BBVA are categorised as systemic because their failure would have a ‘cascade effect’ similar to the collapse of Lehman Brothers which triggered the 2008 economic crisis.
To avoid a repetition, these banks must be able to withstand losses of between 16 to 20 per cent of risk-weighted assets in equity and cancellable debt, recommended the Basle-based Financial Stability Board (FSB). This will protect taxpayers from having to fund bailouts for ‘too big to fail’ banks, the FSB said in plans drawn up for G-20 countries.

never to be forgotten gesture. This lesson in business was not given by a successful entrepreneur or at a business seminar but by an elderly lady running a corner shop. You can put customer goodwill to
better use provided your approach is diplomatic and never pushy. An enterprising business friend in the home improvement trade constantly received expressions of thanks. Explaining that he was trying to build his business, he suggested to clients that a short note of recommendation would be truly well received. Most were delighted at the opportunity to express their thanks in a tangible way. On receiving the written tributes my friend placed each in his presenter. Then, when pitching to new customers he left his testimonials presenter with them before going on his way. The outcome
was that, whilst he was at home reading bedtime stories to his children, his past clients were doing his selling for him. I adopted a more sophisticated approach. Following an order taken I posted to my client a small note of thanks and a five customer satisfaction survey. Important: I included a stamped address reply envelope. As a consequence I was soon to receive an unimpressive number of customer recommendations. These I placed in an envelope when confirming appointments by post. My sales success was assured, thanks to conscripting my customers to do my selling for me.

CHANGING a habit takes some getting used to. However, if your way of living is causing serious damage to your finances, then it’s time to take a step back and review how you might save a little. A recent survey in the UK just revealed that most full-time British workers have an extra £500 to spend after paying all their bills and debts each month. This seems a little excessive to me, but wouldn’t a bit more spare cash each month be an incredible thing? By taking a couple of frugal money-saving steps in your
day-to-day life there is a way to cut down on needless expenses and make your money go further - on things you actually want to spend it on. Meal Plan. Draw up a weekly menu to help cut back on the huge amount of waste that many households create. This system helps to identify areas where you can use up leftovers, finish half-eaten sauces, use fruit and vegetables before they turn bad and avoid grabbing expensive ready meals. And remember to never go shopping when you are hungry. DIY Cleaning. Shops are lined with rows of expensive cleaning products, but a quick look in your kitchen cupboards and chances are you already have all the cleaning products you need right there. A teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda on a damp cloth works just as well as expensive

Not wild about campers WE residents of El Pinet are fed up with ‘wild camping’ in the car park, sometimes for months on end. We have paid a lot of money to live here, not to overlook a gypsy encampment because that is what it is. We have sent petitions in the past to Elche Council and complained but they are not interested. If the mayor of Elche or any of her cronies lived here this would not be allowed to happen. Has anybody in the Environment department thought of where they empty their sewage? Well, we can tell them. They empty it here in green areas or even down the drains at our lovely walkway. We have seen them and photographed them and sent the photographs to Elche Council but, again, they are not interested. Surely this is a health hazard? If Santa Pola and San Fulgencio can get rid of them, why can’t Elche? There are lovely campsites nearby, why don’t they go there? No, they are too tight to pay. A Nosworthy, La Marina (Alicante)
Get it in writing JUST a short letter to advise your readers if they are moving items to the UK from Spain they should get each quote in writing. This is my second letter but it is of public interest, so please print it. Recently I used the services of a removal company, received a quote for €150 and then the company increased the quote to €250. When queried they made all sorts of excuses, none of which were valid. Fuel fury ON a recent round-trip to the UK my wife and I chose to drive back through France, as we have done many times before. On our return journey, having filled up with fuel several times each way, we were told at our last stop in Spain that our debit card was being refused, which rang alarm bells.

Having arrived home we immediately checked our bank account to discover there was little left because three transactions totalling approximately €160 had not been processed. Instead random amounts totalling €310 were taken. Two sums of €90 have since been repaid and the correct amount charged and eventually the last ‘theft’ of €130 was refunded. However, they took the correct amount after four days but did not refund the €130 for 10 days, which is an even worse crime in my opinion. The companies concerned are Super U and E L’Eclerc, supermarket chains with unmanned petrol stations where you can only use a credit or debit card to pay for your fuel. The receipts are printed at the pump and they were all for the correct amount for the fuel that we purchased. I have got nowhere trying to report this to my bank, VISA and even consumer groups. Why is that, I wonder, because it is clearly theft? Charles Day (by email)

Home alone THE mother who received a police caution for leaving her sixyear-old daughter alone for threequarters of an hour some years back has all my sympathy. She now has a criminal record that she wants erased and you’d have to belong to the pursed-lips brigade not to empathise. My daughter is grown-up now but my blood still runs cold when I think of what almost happened when she was two. We had moved to a sixth floor flat on the seafront and the balcony had a sturdy wall topped with a railing. Nobody leaves a two-year-old to her own devices and I certainly
didn’t but one day I was in the kitchen, getting the tea ready while my daughter napped. Hearing a noise I popped my head round the kitchen door and to my horror saw her standing on top of the balcony wall. The sitting room door to the terrace was open and she had pushed a wicker chair against the wall and clambered up. The little so-and-so had her arms stretched wide, crowing with delight at the view and to this day I don’t remember reaching and grabbing her. And to this day the palms of my hands still sweat when I think about what could have happened. It’s not just physical presence that counts: that UK mother’s 45 minutes of absence were probably less blameworthy and dangerous than my carelessness. Linda Gonzalez, Altea (Alicante)

Starting early SOMEONE interviewed for ‘Street Talk’ said he regarded drinking Anis at 7am as expenditure on something that isn’t needed. I’m assuming he is referring to the custom as still practised by Spanish workmen and navvies. Anis isn’t what you’d describe as a huge outlay and this is a timehonoured habit, meant to kickstart the working day. If memory serves me rightly, opening hours for the pubs round Covent Garden in London used not to correspond to the strict licensing regulations then in force. I can’t see the Covent Garden porters who had been working until the crack of dawn drinking glasses of Anis, but they were obviously knocking something back when they didn’t need to. Still on the subject of ‘Street Talk’ I was amazed that two women admitted to spending on shoes when they didn’t need to. I commented on this to my wife, who looked flabbergasted. “You don’t have to need shoes,” she informed me. “You just have to want them,” she explained patiently. “Even if they’re never worn?” I asked. “Even if they are never worn,” she answered in a firm tone of voice that brooked no argument. Hot stuff A CORRESPONDENT who was a lifelong socialist wrote last week that she felt betrayed by New Labour and was willing to give the UKIP party a chance. Another letter described Farage’s party as ‘upstart and ultra-rightwing’ and warned against the effects on expats of an ‘in-out’ referendum regarding Britain’s EU membership. Life is no holiday at London’s alcohol and bacon-free hotel LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

F you thought the UK was cold, you should try Denmark! My God, all the reasons I moved to warmer climes keep flooding back. Well, at least the Danish people seem warm enough. Mind you it really is a strange language - lots of ‘erks’ and ‘choovs.’ Why is it that the first words I always learn in a new language are swear words? Anyway, tomorrow I’m off to Sweden for the day - even colder! Apparently it’s 20 minutes by ferry. Ah well, someone has to do it. Did you catch the report of the
RELIGIOUS STAY: Would all hotels welcome gay couples? new Sharia hotel that opened in London last week? No alcohol, no pork, and subsequently, a serious drop in clientele. To my mind the whole exercise is a gross error of judgement. Notwithstanding the local Muslim populace, many of whom are, I’m sure, devout and
sincere in their beliefs, in my personal experience, the tourists from many of these strictly religious parts of the world travel to cities like London simply to get a break from their suffocating restrictions back home - the casinos are full of them.
I would also be interested to observe the result should a gay couple endeavour to check into the hotel and request a single room for the night. If this should happen, would there be the same outcry from the law as there was when that poor Christian family were mathered from pillar to post and subsequently arrested? Wouldn’t ya just love to give it a try? Come on any samegender newlyweds out there; try and check into the honeymoon suite. And just for a bit of icing, carry a couple of bacon butties and a bottle of bubbly in yer bag. Anyone up for it? It also interested me to read the new proprietor’s statement that it was an offence under Islamic law to ‘make a profit from alcohol.’ Does that mean
its ok to give it away? Sounds like a wriggle up to me. I was given gallons in Saudi Arabia. Does that imply I wasn’t breaking the law at all? I dunno, they take the fun out of everything. I also have a word of advice to the Muslims who objected to hamburgers being sold in their local supermarket. Don’t buy ‘em. Not rocket science is it? I dunno, sometimes I really do despair of it all. Don’t forget the Flying Curry Circus Christmas Party on December 13. Just in case you happen to be in the vicinity of Mallorca or thereabouts. NE hardly needs to be a visionary to prophesy what historians will make of the European Union’s trade war against Russia. It is a foreign policy débâcle without peace time precedent. The power brokers concede that sanctions on Russia is an American initiative from which only the U.S. benefits. Modern Russia, as far as Washington DC and War (sic) Street banks are concerned, is the biggest threat to world order. This is American-speak for Russia being a threat to U.S. world domination. It is a mistake to think of recent events as a new Cold War. It is already a hot war that has been heating up since 1990. When Russian President Boris Yeltsin, an habitual drunkard, handed the reins of power to President Vladimir Putin, he would have little idea of the force of the genie released from the rubbed lamp. With little fanfare the new President set about transferring his country’s natural wealth from American to Russian interests.
From here on he was vilified by the Western Powers. Far worse was to come. Having rebuilt the Russian economy Putin then set his own agenda; Russian interests. The growing strength of the rouble and Russian self interest converged to form the next logical step. Russian trade, in the future, would be independent of the U.S. dollar and instead based more favourably on barter and trade between national currencies such as those of China, India and Iran. The effect was to do far more damage to the American economy than any hot war possibly could. American and British economies are war economies. The U.S. and UK became more powerful and prosperous as a consequence of wars. Modern Russia denies opportunity for profitable wars and simultaneously undermines the dollar as a trading currency. The U.S. is fighting back but cannot do so on its own. To carry out its aims the U.S. needed to increase EU dependency on Washington and Wall Street. Its top Goldman Sachs bankers were parachuted into the parliaments and banking houses of Western Europe. American subversion of Western media is on a scale that horrifies. If you want to
know who Western media’s string-pullers are, simply see whose interests they put the spin on. European Union defence policy is based entirely on American finance. Washington DC instructed France not to hand over two partly Russian built Mistral Class warship carriers. The suggestion was that the EU purchase them. The €3 billion cost is calculated to be nearly double the EU defence spending budget. This is small beer to the damage being done to the EU economy and indirectly the financial well-being and security PRESIDENT PUTIN: of us all. The idea is far too perplexing to be swallowed easily and generally causes enough consternation to worry the entire village sleepless, well into the spring. As we sat a young man came breezing across the floor shouting a hearty “Howdy,” with his pen raised ready to take the order, even before we had the menus. “I see you’re from Chicago, saw it on your car licence plate,” he announced. This upset me in the sense that before I could order a beer he was tellin’ me where I was

Cats that pounce on their owners
CONTINUING my series with Celia Haddon on cat aggression I look at Predatory Agression. Sometimes a cat is bored and attacking humans becomes a substitute for hunting mice. The instinct to hunt is so strong that they will even leave a delicious meal in order to pounce on a rat. Pouncing, say on feet, with the owner’s shriek, is exciting and fulfils its natural instinct. Sometimes kittens have been encouraged to pounce on toes and feet, so that cat is, so to speak, trained to behave in this way. Install a cat flap, or even a cat ladder, so the cat can do some proper mousing. If you can’t do this, you MUST give the cat more to do. Lots of games with fishing rod toys will help. Carnivores are hard-wired to hunt. If better arrangements for the cat make no difference, try distracting the cat by throwing a toy, a wine cork, or something similar away from yourself, so that the cat locks on to a

different moving target. It is also possible to use sound as a discourager. Ring a small bell each time you start vacuuming (if your cat, like most cats, loathes the hoover). The idea is to link the bell with the unpleasant noise of the vacuum in the cat’s mind. Then use the bell when you see the cat about to pounce. The aim is to deter the cat from pouncing, without the cat feeling that you yourself are frightening. It is essential you
don’t run away, make rapid movements, flinch or shriek. These reactions just make the hunting more fun for the cat! Keep hands still. Cats are turned on by moving targets and high pitched sounds. Wear wellies or, if the cat pounces or scratches higher up the leg, wear leather chaps or fishing trousers. Spray the wellies or chaps with a deterrent spray used to keep cats off gardens just in case this helps. Other possibilities, arrange a timed feeder so the cat is feeding at times it might be pouncing, or simply shut the cat in a different room at times/places when you know it pounces. Do not let it in the bedroom where it can pounce on your face. ENTERTAINMENT: Give your cat more to do.

Optimism: preparing for hospital Erica Russell Watson: My journey – and I’m driving
Run up to 22nd October I’VE always said it’s good to have a plan of action, and now that I had a date for my mastectomy there were lots of things to organise. Keeping occupied is important. Whatever the illness or problem you have in life, I think it is essential to carry on as best you can. Put your loved ones and your wellbeing at the centre of your life and keep the negatives to the margin. Being positive will automatically boost you, both physically and emotionally. A happy person can take on the world but if you feel sad and low, all you want to do is curl up in a ball. Curling up in a ball is not an option! I prescribe a daily dose of laughter to keep your engine running. So that’s what I did; laugh and plan! Aside from making arrangements for my children, I needed to have a rethink about what I packed for the hospital stay. For the previous hospital
visit I had taken towels and nightshirts, which proved to be unnecessary as the hospital provide you with a clean towel and a crisp nightie every morning. Aside from toiletries, the most important thing is to have comfortable clothes to wear when you leave the hospital. Try and take loose fitting clothes, preferably ones that button up at the front. You have reduced mobility after surgery and have to consider clothing that will be easy to put on, and that will also accommodate drains if you leave hospital with a drain still in. You also need to consider your bra. Soft, cotton sports bras without underwiring are best. You will need to wear a bra after the operation if you have a lumpectomy to provide compression. I had already been through that process and this time I would be having a mastectomy, so would need to be fitted with a mastectomy bra and prosthesis post-op. Both of which I got free from an orthopaedic shop five minutes after leaving hospital, armed with my hospital prescription. A fantastic service, easy and quick. I went in lopsided and came out with two boobs again! A massive pat on the back for the Spanish National Health System.
In between operations, I was called for my first physiotherapy session. It turned out that I would have to have rehabilitation after my cancer treatment but they checked my movement and gave me a series of exercises to prevent lymphedema, the swelling of tissues that I talked about in previous blogs, and to ensure that I would recover mobility in my right arm. I went home and did the exercises and found them pretty easy. At first your arm will feel like the strings of a guitar, taught and unforgiving. Bit by bit you will be able to raise your arm and return to near normality. The things you used to take for granted, like getting dressed or reaching up for something, become easier. The operation day loomed and I went into hospital the evening before. It took all of five minutes to register me and take me up to my hospital room. Who would I be sharing with this time, I wondered? I was accompanied by my lovely friend Bob. I felt quite at home as this was my second time at the Hospital Comarcal in Vélez-Málaga in a month! My roommate was a German lady called Erika and she was to be the third patient having their gallbladder removed that I
had shared with. Ok, this was familiar territory… what was not familiar territory was her husband who was one of the world’s most impressive snorers! This, I would find out the first night! To be fair to him, he did warn me that I would need to get a head start and get to sleep before him! I thought it a little strange that he made up his bed on the floor, but I was later to realise that this meant he was in bashing distance of his wife’s fan! (It was October but very hot and the air conditioning had been turned off.) I had my drip put in by a lovely nurse who recognised me from the last time - “You, here again, couldn’t stay away!” I replied, “Yes me again! I liked my first stay so much I just had to come back.” We smiled at each other. They made me comfortable and brought me dinner. The next nurse on the shift took one look at me and said, “You better give this lady a three-course meal or she’ll never make it through the 40 hours nil by mouth!” What a memory she had! Last time I was absolutely famished after the previous operation and on the point of sneaking off to the hospital café for an illicit bocadillo! So three courses it was! A cup of tea and then time for bed. Well, I didn’t get much sleep in between the snorer
and his wife unceremoniously bashing him on the head with her fan, requesting his silence! They were a lovely couple but I was relieved that he would not be staying overnight again! Eight in the morning and I was showered and ready for action. Into the operating theatre I went and was out in no time. I felt a little groggy but was up and about a few hours after the op, managed to go to the loo on my own and even have a little stroll around. I was so surprised that the mastectomy did not hurt. Perhaps the pain would kick in tomorrow? It didn’t, much to my surprise, and I was mobile and able to shower. Then I got my first look at the results of the op. Not bad really. I didn’t feel depressed about it - more relief that something so dangerous had been removed. I imagine everyone will have different feelings about having a breast removed but I had mentally removed it before the op, so the physical reality was easier to deal with. A few more days in hospital and then the drain came out and I was given the all clear to go home. Lovely Conchi came to pick me up and take me home. Time to rest and await the results of the operation and the next step!

10% of IVF treatments in Europe happen in Spain SPAIN carried out 5,000 IVF treatments each month, 60,000 a year, which represents 10 per cent of all treatments carried out in Europe, after France, Germany and Italy. The figures were revealed at the Sixth International Symposium on Assisted Reproduction in Madrid. The conference brought together more than 1,000 experts to address the technical and clinical advances in the field, the role of immunological factors in achieving pregnancy and ethical and legal aspects of the developing technology. According to the organisation, the number of fertility treatments in Europe has increased in recent

Spanish drinkers lead the way in purchase of booze-free beer WITH many health professionals warning that too much booze can be bad for you, it seems Spain’s beer drinkers have taken the advice to heart. The nation leads the way in Europe when it comes to drinking nonalcoholic beer (NAB), with a perhaps surprising 60 per cent of Spanish buyers having bought the alcohol-free version at some time during 2013. That figure rose to 69 per cent of consumers aged between 45 and 54, according to a survey by marketing trends analysts Mintel, which looked at six key European markets. And it is not only in Spain where Mintel’s
research highlights demand. Whilst German consumers are forecast to buy 5.9 billion litres of all types of beer in 2014, half (47 per cent) of consumers purchased non-alcoholic beer at least once in 2013. Furthermore, the demand is strong throughout Europe as one in three (29 per cent) Italian consumers, a quarter (26 per cent) of Poles, and 18 per cent of French consumers bought NAB in 2013. In addition, despite having the notorious ‘lager lout’ status, one in seven (14 per cent) British beer-buyers purchased non-alcoholic beer in 2013, rising to a quarter (26 per cent) of
18 to 34-year-olds, among what is clearly a much more sensible generation. However, despite the clearly strong consumer demand, new nonalcoholic beers have accounted for just 3 per cent of all global beer launch activity so far in 2014, less than the 4 per cent in 2011 and significantly less than the 10 per cent in 1999. Jonny Forsyth, Global Drinks Analyst at Mintel, said: “Non-alcoholic beer has huge, long-term sales potential, both in Muslimdominated regions and health-conscious but beer-loving Western markets. “This is an area of
innovation which all major brewers should be focusing on – consumers want reassurance of product quality, something trusted brands can provide.” Furthermore, Mintel’s research shows that the popularity of nonalcoholic beer is strong amongst older consumers and women. Indeed, 63
per cent of Spanish and 50 per cent of German female beer buyers have bought NAB in the past six months, compared to 57 per cent and 46 per cent of male beer buyers respectively. “Analysis of NAB drinkers by age in both Spain and Germany, tells a similar and positive story for brewers attempting to reverse flat
sales in Western markets,” said Forsyth. “Millennial beer drinkers are less likely to drink NABs – although not hugely – with purchasing peaking among the consumers aged 35 and over, presumably as consumers become more healthconscious and less resilient to the negative effects of alcohol.”

Make your garden a haven for wildlife UNFORTUNATELY, over the past 20 years, less and
less attractive and beneficial wildlife has been found in our gardens. The important losses include birds, mammals, reptiles that live on unwanted insects, and micro-organisms in the soil. The causes range from the felling of trees, the expansion of urbanisations, the use of agricultural and garden chemicals, forest and heathland fires, wind farms, the concreting over or use of large areas of gravel over plastic and the lowering of water tables. But there are several practical and inexpensive things the gardener can do to provide safe havens for birds, beneficial insects, small mammals and reptiles. Our gardens will be richer as a result of such actions.

HELLO and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last time we had a really short look at ‘Incredimail,’ so this week I would like to examine this program further and try to understand its popularity. I started at the Incredimail website whose first impression is that of a cartoon drawn for a favourite child, not a good start. The website downloaded a ‘Stub program.’ This is a small program that will redirect you to

As expected the stub tried to get me to download ‘Search Protect,’ ‘Optimizer Pro’ and ‘AntiMalware.’ When I clean someone’s computer of malware, these are always on the list. I skipped them all even though the button appeared to be ‘Off.’ The first screen asked
what my gender was, what country I am in and do I want email adverts? No I don’t want adverts, you don’t need my gender or location information! Guess what! Without it you can’t continue! So I’m Female and I’m in America! Having checked the website, I found out about how
they can target YOU for special advertising. Do I want Incredimail as my default browser webpage - NO! Connect it to my Facebook account? NO! Click cancel. Having got the program running I found that it picked up a gmail account that I have, without being given any information about it and it added itself to my startup so it is there
whenever I start my computer (without asking)! Now that really concerns me! So far I have nothing good to say about this program, but to try and be fair I will test it, write about it and then discard it. I’m always available for good advice and everything concerning your computer on 689 892 745.

Books for Albox library ALBOJENSE poet Juan Jose Ceba has promised a donation of 2,000 books for Albox library. The poet was born in Albox in 1951 and always speaks fondly of his time in the town, one which he describes as the paradise of his childhood. Although the poet now lives in Almeria City, it is his love and passion for his town of birth that has led him to offer the donation of more than 2,000 books to the town library. The books include works of poetry, drama, fiction, philosophy and history. Juan Jose has also donated in the past to other institutions
including the Ibañez Museum. The poet, whose book collection currently stands at 5,000, has left the books to the town library in his will. He said: “I left Albox with a collection of books that are essential for me and although I do not donate them in life, they will certainly pass to the library of Albox when I die.” The poet went on to stress the books are very precious but said: “Books have to reach people.” Part of the extensive book collection will go to a new cultural centre, planned for the Albox hamlet of Las Pocicas where the poet grew up.

Albox meeting for natural gas THE arrival of natural gas in Albox is imminent and so the town’s mayor, Rogelio Mena, met with officials from the supplier, Redexis Gas. Joining Rogelio Mena were the deputy mayors of Albox, Francisco Perez Conchillo and Sonia Cerdan, as well as Redexis territorial representative Pedro Angel Santos Nieto, Redexis architect Jose
Antonio Navarro and Redexis commercial manager Jose Antonio Navarro. The natural gas will supply businesses and domestic dwellings and has been welcomed by the mayor who said: “I give my personal endorsement of any investment in the town that generates employment, development, infrastructural improve-
ments, raises the competitiveness of our products by reducing energy costs, improves the comfort of our citizens and improves environmental quality.” Mena continued: “This will produce a very positive impact on local job creation and energy saving for businesses and households, saving each between 30 and 50 per cent. The town hall representatives pointed out that the arrival of natural gas joins the other improvements made to the town in recent months including the new municipal swimming pools and health centre, the Pabellon Francisco Torrecillas and the health centre at Llano del Espino.

SLOVAKIAN engineers have come up with a way to avoid traffic jams. The AeroMobil 3.0, dubbed a ‘multimodal vehicle,’ is actually a flying car. It has been designed and manufactured by a team led by chief designer Stefan Klein and Juraj Vaculik, cofounders of the AeroMobil company, in just 10 months following the release of a much more basic preprototype of the flying car. “I’m very happy with what we were able to achieve in such a short time with a team of only 12 people. AeroMobil 3.0 is not the end of a challenging project, it’s the beginning of a whole new adventure which may change how we look at personal transport in the future,” said Stefan. Juraj added: “It may really enable new ways of travel, advancing it to a new level. We are set to reinvent the flying car without constraints and deliver excitement through unique, technical solution and design.” The flying car has been in development since 1989, when Stefan Klein, the founder and head of the Department of Transport Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Slovakia, began working on the concept.
