Movie boost for Frigiliana IT was lights, camera, action in Frigiliana as the town became the location for a new movie. The years were rolled back as the film, called Follow Your Sunshine, is set in the 1950s. Due to be released in September 2015, the movie is the first part of trilogy, The Lovaganza Convoy. French directors Genevieve and J F Gagnon brought a team of 50 people to the town and 25 extras were chosen from among 500 local candidates who attended the casting session. In addition, the historical centre was closed to traffic as the film brought a touch of nostalgia to the town. It evoked memories of bygone times as actors in period costume strolled through the traffic-free streets. The impact of the production has been very beneficial to the town, according to Head of
Tourism, Maria Jose Caravaca. “We are aware of the uniqueness of our town, and our mission is to promote its attractions during the whole year.
To be chosen as the set for such an important production is a big boost for the town,” said Caravaca. The shooting required the renting of cars and

THE Minister For Development Ana Pastor has said work on the A-7 will be finished by next year. Work started more than nine years ago and €105 million has already been spent on a stretch which is only six kilometres long and goes from Gorgoracha to Puntalon. The project was put on hold in 2010 due to plan modifications and resumed in September 2012. Pastor has made it her mission to finish the road while she is in charge of the ministry and visited the site last week to announce that the stretch would finally be inaugurated by April next year.

Cash to restore fire-hit forest
NEARLY €350,000 will be spent on the ecological restoration of areas near Competa, which were hit by a forest fire earlier this year. The Junta de Andalucia regional government has given the green light to spend the money on reforestation of the Pinar de Competa and Sierra, and Pinar de Canillas de Albaida. On June 29, 186 hectares of forest were scorched in the forest fire. Smoke could be seen all across the Axarquia as teams of
firefighters and aircraft fought to tackle the blaze. It was one of the worst fires seen in Andalucia this year, which overall has been a relatively good one for the amount of fires. The area of land burned by forest fires is well down on the annual average over the last 10 years. The money for the works will come from the Junta’s contingency fund. Work had already started in July to reduce the risk of further fires and protect the remaining forest.

THE mayor of Tolox has been jailed for 15 months for giving a licence to build 78 homes on rural land. Juan Vera was also banned from public office or employment for 10 years by a Malaga court. He had appealed against the sentence, but the Provincial court refused to hear it as it said the appeal had no prospect of being successful.
The case refers to a development of 78 homes on an estate in El Paraje El Calvario, but the development fell outside the PGOU development plan for Tolox, a town of 2,400 inhabitants. But despite that, the municipal architect and the mayor gave the go ahead in June 2005. This is not the only planning
offence Vera has been found guilty of. In a separate case he was jailed for a year in 2012 and banned from public office for eight years for a similar offence. In that case he gave licences to build 17 two storey homes on non-urbanisable land. He has also appealed against that sentence, and is awaiting the result.
Unemployed again MORE than 400 Velez-Malaga residents lost their job during the month of October. Despite the efforts of the Council and Junta de Andalucia regional government, the number of employed people kept dropping after the summer season.

NDALUCIA’S famous Cueva del Gato could soon be open to the public - or at least part of it could be. More than 15kilometres in length, the cave complex has long been the exclusive domain of potholers and cave explorers; daredevils who have witnessed the splendorous beauty of a spectacular underground world. Plans are afoot to open the first 400 metres of the cave to the public in an effort to promote tourism to the region of Ronda and Benaojan, home of Cueva del Gato, one of two entrances to the cave. The cave’s entrance is said to look like a cat’s face (hence the name ‘Cueva del Gato) and the entrance is as far as most people have ventured, apart from the caving experts who come from all over the world to explore its caverns and tunnels. Several people have died due to flash-flooding and rising waters, and a notice at the entrance warns visitors not to go any further. However, experts are now assessing the possibility of opening up a section of Cueva del Gato to visitors with safety measures being put in place.

Jail time THE provincial court has sentenced a man who killed his girlfriend by stabbing her 18 times to 24 years of prison. The suspect, Oscar CT, headed to Almuñecar to commit suicide after the murder but confessed at the police station instead.

Illegal food sales rise ILLEGAL food stands have multiplied around the towns of the Costa Tropical as a result of the economic crisis. Small illegal businesses have surfaced in towns including Motril and Almuñecar. These stands often sell fruit and vegetables which are not quality tested. Despite being illegal, the stands open during the day and attract large numbers of clients due to the low prices at which they offer the products. Often, these are sold at 50 per cent less than the supermarket price. Local Police in Granada said the numbers had dramatically increased this year. In total, 2,790 confiscations of illegally sold produce have been carried out so far, whereas last year the number was 795, an increase of 251 per cent. Confiscated food is
usually taken to charities after being tested as safe for human consumption. All sorts of products are sold with complete
impunity, even those which are perishable, and therefore potentially harmful to consumers’ health.
Bread, pastries, eggs and even fish are some of the goods sold in the streets and squares. Local authorities have
warned that this practice can be dangerous for the health of buyers and advises people against buying them.
Heritage help
TORROX Council has approved a law to protect the historic centre of the town. The project was given the green light with the support of the opposition, who are also aware of the need for protecting the architectural Arabic heritage. “The historical centre requires protection to preserve and promote the urban heritage, avoiding new constructions that disturb the image that makes our town unique,” said Mayor Francisco Muñoz.

T’S November already and in just a few short weeks our thoughts will begin turning to the Christmas season; a season that seems to enjoy a longer build-up as each year goes by. But before we start humming Christmas tunes and getting the decorations down from the attic, we have November to contend with, a time when the days and nights get that little bit colder, darkness descends that bit earlier, and facial hair on the upper lips of men seems to sprout from nowhere. So why the proliferation of moustaches of all shapes and sizes on men that otherwise spend the rest of the year clean-shaven? Why it’s ‘Movember’ of course. Growing in popularity each year, Movember is the month when men of all ages and from different walks of life
grow a moustache in order to raise money and awareness for men’s health, in particular prostate and testicular cancer. From humble beginnings back in 2004 when a group of 30 friends in Australia decided to grow moustaches during November, the Movember Foundation now boasts around four million ‘mo bros’ worldwide and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for men’s health. The trend has caught on in Spain, with the country being one of 21 countries across the world that participates in Movember. So don’t be too surprised if you notice a lot of dodgy-looking moustaches doing the rounds during Movember. It’s all for a good cause and we here at EWN will always support a good cause. Aquarium ‘loses 500 fish’ ALMUÑECAR AQUARIUM has lost more than 500 fish, according to a report. A marine biologist, who previously worked in the aquarium and is the author of the report, said that the loss is far above normal. During the maintenance and renovation works in the last 18 months, the population in the aquarium has decreased from 758 different animals, to 200. This means 74 per cent of the total has been lost. Representatives of the aquarium argued that the report was false and inaccurate, and said that during 2013 and 2014, only 74 animals had died, 7 per cent of the total which, according to them, is an average number.

Tourism numbers drop for winter DESPITE the good temperature and weather conditions during the last few weeks of October, the tourism numbers clearly marked the beginning of the low-season in Costa Tropical. Hotel Playa Calida de Almuñecar closed its doors at the start of the month, together with Los Fenicios hotel in La Herradura. They will be followed on November 9 by other establishments such as Robinson Hotel in Motril, and Almuñecar Playa on December 19. In total, the number of available beds will decrease by 25 per cent during low season. In addition, staff are often let go during low season to return in the summer, which means about half of the employees working at hotels will lose their job during the next few months.
“The courses are especially designed for those out of work, but registration is also open for those who do have a job and wish to widen their knowledge of new technologies,” said a council representative. The next courses that will be held are titled ‘Online employability resources’ and ‘Office Software Basics,’ 20-hour long courses that will take place from November 10 to 14 and ‘New ICT professions’ and ‘Online Safety’ on November 17. Mother faces eviction MOTRIL resident Maria Dolores Enriquez, who cosigned her daughter’s house loan, is being told to pay a €30,000 debt and could lose her home. In 2007, her daughter Carolina Crespo and her partner bought a house and the troubles with the bank started from the very beginning. “When 20 per cent of the loan was paid, the bank changed the conditions for the remaining 80 per cent,” said the woman. She added that when her relationship broke up, her ex-partner stopped paying the mortgage and so the bank started the process of repossession. Her mother then borrowed €33,000 to stop the process, but she is now the one facing the possibility of losing her house.

Creating jobs for young people AS one of the measures carried out by the Junta de Andalucia regional government to fight unemployment, 1,132 jobless young residents of la Axarquia will be hired. This initiative is part of the programme Empleo@Joven, created by the Junta to help alleviate the effects of the crisis on the population aged between 18 and 29 years. The Junta will spend €4.7m in the Axarquia area, encouraging companies to hire young people and fostering social projects.

More help for seniors NEW places at Nerja nursing homes have been opened for senior citizens on low incomes. Town Mayor, Jose Alberto Armijo, said that the town council and the Sisters of The Good Samaritan nuns had signed an agreement to collaborate on creating places for low-income senior citizens whose families couldn’t take care of them. Nerja Council will spend €52,000 on the initiative and the residents will have to pay 75 per cent of their monthly income. “We want to help senior citizens who depend on their families and provide them with the care that they need, and also reduce the burden on families,” said the Mayor.

Swimming to Morocco THREE Motril residents will swim across the Strait of Gibraltar for a good cause. They will swim the stretch between Tarifa and Punta Cires, approximately 18 kilometres, with proceeds from the event donated to the Vicente Ferrer Foundation. Sports Councillor Jose Garcia Fuentes introduced the athletes at a press conference, emphasising the difficulty of the journey due to the strong currents and the large number of ships in the area. The temperature of the water will range between 14 and 16 degrees and the swimmers plan to stop every 30 minutes to avoid hypothermia.

A thousand metres of solidarity THREE hundred participants ran in the fourth edition of the race ‘Kilómetro Inclusivo’ in Rincon de la Victoria. Runners of all ages participated last Sunday November 2 in this sports event that aimed to raise awareness of people with different sorts of impairments. “The main purpose of the run was to help integrate people with disabilities, encourage the practice of sports and offer a fun, recreational activity,” said Mayor of Rincon de la Victoria Francisco Salado, who also took part. Sporting calendar ALMUÑECAR Sports Department has released its sporting events calendar for November. A fishing contest kicked off the events on November 2. The next event will be an Aikido Seminar this Saturday (November 8). On Sunday (9), there will be a Petanque tournament at Playa Fuente Piedra (registration from 9am to 9.30am). On November 22 the international Kenpo championship will take place at the municipal sports pavillion. To follow up, there will be a Judo competition on November 23 at the pavilion. Finally, on November 29 and 30, another Petanque competition will be held. In addition, hiking days are set for Sunday and November 23.

AVE train works force road closures TRAFFIC was cut last Monday (November 3) on the CV-930 road due to the construction works for the AVE train. An alternative route will go through Avenida Principe de Asturias to the roundabout at the fairground Los Huertos, and exit from Los Huertos at the roundabout where the Domingo Serna building is located. In addition, the overpass to access the CV-91 will be closed on November 26 for a week. To access the hospital, the route will go from Redovan towards the CV-919 and back on to the CV-91.
Tribute to first photographer of the Nerja Caves MORE than a 100 people participated in an event to honour Jose Padial, the first photographer of the Cuevas de Nerja, on October 30 in the Museum of Nerja. The documentary movie ‘Cave of Nerja: year zero’ was screened in an emotional tribute, produced by Jose Antonio Jimena, the photographer’s nephew. During the event, Head of the Culture Department Juan Jesus Bernal emphasised the importance that the caves have had in the development of the town. The museum will be displaying the first photographs ever taken inside the cave until January 16,and the documentary will be screened daily.

Bus station plan seven years late AFTER seven years on hold, the budget for Motril bus station has finally being accepted by the Junta de Andalucia regional government. Motril mayor, Luisa Garcia Chamorro said that the Junta has pledged to include it in the 2015 budget plans, and will spend €1.7 million on the project. The construction works were in the past cancelled by the Junta due to budget limitations despite the great need for better infrastructures. “Roads around the area are badly congested. Financed by €588,400 from the Junta de Andalucia regional government and the European Social Fund, the new employees will work on projects across a wide range of areas, from helping the elderly to the young, as well as working in tourism, cultural projects, cleaning and ecological actions. The workers, many of whom have already taken qualifications through the council’s education for employment programme, have been given six month contracts which will help them specialise in specific areas of interest.
Ancient hospital to become a museum THE Velez-Malaga hospital founded by the Catholic Monarchs during the XV century will be turned into a museum. Velez-Malaga mayor, Francisco Delgado Bonilla said that the museum will exhibit the Phoenician remains, property of the council and more than 1,700 different objects such as archaeological pieces, historical documents, photographs and art reproductions amongst others. “Some transcendental episodes of the history will be highlighted, such as the conquest of the city by the Catholic Monarchs and the Phoenician colonisation”, said the mayor.

Study says 22.2% of youngsters go online with people they don’t know TWO out of three young people have profiles on social networks and almost a third of their contacts are people they don’t know, according to a recent survey for parents of 10 to 17 year olds and their children. The survey by the Interior Ministry on internet use and security also revealed that almost
60 per cent connect to the internet every day, most for at least two hours. One in three parents said they check their children’s profiles and contacts. A figure that is in contrast with what they claim worries them most: their children being contacted by strangers. The truth is that young
people interact with strangers, especially while playing online games (25.4 per cent) but also on social networks (13 per cent) and chat rooms (10 per cent). Of the youths interviewed, 22.2 per cent admitted to having added people they had never met to their friends or contacts lists and 4.1

Leonor: the future Queen of Spain at nine years old HER Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias turned nine on Friday October 31. Leonor has a vague idea of what it means to be heir to the throne; just like her grandfather transferred his responsibilities as King to his son King Felipe VI, she will one day inherit from her father something called the Spanish crown. She has heard her father say the crown must be won with effort, hard work and dedication, and the King leads by example and does his best to instil those very same values in her. Leonor will be the fourth Spanish Queen since Isabella I of Castille – otherwise known as Isabella the Catholic – who sat DISCIPLINED: Princess Leonor is very formal in public.

Appeal for protection of Spanish serrano ham SPAIN’S beloved serrano ham could receive protected status in order to stop other countries from labelling their own versions as ‘serrano ham.’ The Spanish meat industry has formally requested the government’s agriculture ministry petition the European Union (EU) to award ‘jamon serrano’ EU geographical indication (PGI) status. A PGI status would put a stop to non-Spanish ham makers in other EU states selling their own product as serrano ham. “The ham is genuinely Spanish and so should be recognised and protected by a PGI,” said Jose Ramon Godoy, manager of the Spanish Serrano Ham Foundation. “This PGI project, coordinated across

Scientists design baby monitor suits A NEW project has created a bodysuit for babies which will automatically detect problems in newborns including sepsis and heart problems. The new suit - made of hypoallergenic cotton with minute almost transparent sensors incorporated - has been designed by Peditec, a new paediatric technology investigation team with members from Valencia General Hospital and Polytechnic University (UPV) and trials have been carried out on 100 volunteer babies between one day and two weeks old. UPV Electronics professor Javier Saiz explained that the wireless sensors send data to computer software which analyses algorithms to detect heartbeat variations and signs of sepsis. Empar Lurbe, head of Paediatrics at the hospital, said the idea is to keep ahead of these problems which although infrequent, can have serious short term consequences.

No super-money for super-chefs THE 82 Michelin stars awarded to 25 Spanish restaurants have not conferred immediate riches. Eneko Atxa, whose restaurant Azurmendi near Bilbao boasts the maximum three stars, has a profit-tosales ratio of around 4 per cent a year. So does his fellow superchef Nacho Manzano who runs the two-star Casa Marcial in Arriondas (Asturias). For Martin Berasategui and Juan Mari Arzak, both based in San Sebastian, the ratio rises to 9 and 15 per cent respectively, but this is as good as it gets. David Muñoz, another respected chef, has revolutionised Spanish
gastronomy at his Madrid restaurant DiverXo, but lost €80,000 in 2012 according to his last registered accounts. “The great restaurants are not very profitable, not at those prices,” said Josep Francesc Galls, professor of Marketing Management at the Esade Business School. If the chefs make money it is through agreements with major food groups, products bearing their names and sponsorships, not through meals costing up to €200 a head. Ferran Adria, whose restaurant El Bulli was named the world’s best and could afford to say so, put it another way: “A groundbreaking restaurant does not focus on profits.”

Payback time SPAIN’S banks returned 7.7 per cent of public money received from the FROB restructuring fund. Including the recent €124 million from Liberbank, €4.427 billion of the €57.265 billion cash injection has been repaid.
Quick work FAST food sales in Spain increased by 1.2 per cent to €1.862 billion last year. Average spending rose to €40.48 per head, according to a study by the EAE Business School.
Deepwater find for Repsol REPSOL has struck high grade oil in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana. The find is located in the Leon well, 352 kilometres from the US coast. It was drilled in water 1,865 metres deep, reaching a depth of 9,684 metres which places it amongst the company’s deepest wells. The Gulf of Mexico is one of the
world’s most profitable deepwater drilling areas and the latest discovery comes five years after another important Repsol find, the Buckskin well 50 kilometres from Leon. Repsol has a 60 per cent participation in the Leon well licence, with the remaining 40 per cent controlled by the Colombian company Ecopetrol.

No sweat, no stress for Spain’s banks needed a €22 billion cash injection and the government requested a €100 billion bailout from the European Union. None of the 15 banks examined will need to raise new capital and although Liberbank had a €32 million shortfall at the end of 2013, it has raised €616 million since
then and has met the ECB’s requirements. The reform and restructuring of Spain’s banking system has borne fruit, said a satisfied Luis Maria Linde, governor of the Bank of Spain. “Spanish banks face the future with healthy balance sheets from a position of solvency,” Linde added.

Cash flow essential to running a business SUCCESSFUL management of cash flow is essential to running a business. Try to work on accurately calculating projected income and balancing outgoings with income. A community far beyond your business doors will be harmed if you get it wrong. Best not to have all your business eggs in one basket. plunge hundreds of smaller businesses, many of them one-manbands, into bankruptcy. I do remember one British household name builder that actually had less than 20 members of the staff on the payroll. Their huge labour force was entirely
sub-contracted. When the banks pulled the plug, hundreds of them were left high, dry and penniless. You should be in a position to survive if a customer or two ceases to do business with you. The cause may not be a client’s insolvency. Your customer could relocate, find an alternative supplier, downsize, or decide that your service can be more cost effectively done in-house. Businesses also get into financial difficulties when expectations of income are exaggerated and outgoings airily dismissed. I recall an employee who thought all was well because the till was stuffed with banknotes. What he should have been looking at were
the cheque book stubs. There is a saying in business: “Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity, but cash is king.” Getting it right is a fine balancing act. Constantly monitor expenditure. If you can get by without it then ditch it. If you sensibly predict income, realistically assess outgoings, learn the dark arts of minimising outgoings whilst maximising income, whilst keeping customers happy, your business will prosper. A crumb of comfort for those facing difficulties. It has been calculated that self-made millionaires on average suffered seven bankruptcies before they hit success.

Markets refocus on economic data
S
TERLING / Euro movements were heavily affected by the run up and then the aftermath of the Scottish referendum vote. As we approached polling day the pound tumbled sharply as polls identified that the outcome was neck and neck. The unprecedented uncertainty that a Yes vote would have delivered sent shock waves through the financial markets and the pound suffered heavy losses as the possibility of a Yes vote became very real. On the day of the vote itself the markets were more confident of a No vote and this led to a recovery in the pound. On official confirmation of the No vote the pound rallied further still, hitting a two-year high against the euro. Attention is now shifting back towards economic data from both the UK and the Eurozone which will determine the future direction of monetary policy

PRESENT DATA: Mainly positive with the pound hitting two year highs against the euro. for both. As it stands, the UK is on a trajectory towards raising interest rates whilst the European Central Bank is entrenched in monetary easing. Recently they undertook aggressive action in the bond market purchasing €1.7 billion in a move to kick start the ailing European economy. This latest move exceeded expectations despite Mario Draghi’s public ambition to
expand the balance sheet up to €1 trillion. Attention has now shifted back to economic data to feedback a picture on the health of the UK and the Eurozone economies. The UK is as we stand looking likely to raise interest rates next year and this is certainly boosting appetite for the pound. Continued positive feedback is required from UK data to
support this view and there is a risk that data could start to slow, potentially pushing back the timeline for an interest rate hike. Ironically the strength of the pound in recent months could weigh on future UK data releases and also soften inflation numbers which will slow the urgency of the BoE. However at present the data has been mainly positive and

hence why the pound is hitting two-year highs against the euro. The euro is under pressure across the currency markets and in particular against the USD. The European Central Bank have cut their main interest rate to 0.05 per cent and cut the deposit rate into negative territory. However there is concern that current measures may not be enough as data continues to disappoint and inflation is still softening. The next step for the ECB would be full blown quantitative easing, which is weighing on the euro overall, and if announced could see further weakness for the single currency with GBP/EUR pushing towards 1.35. However, it is probably unlikely that we will see QE this year and it will probably come, if at all, after December’s release of the second tranche of the TLTRO programme uptake.

Forget about perfection. The pursuit of perfection is a great big waste of time. Imagine it in terms of learning Spanish. Those that refuse to speak for fear of making mistakes never get to practice and their language learning stops in its tracks. It’s the same in the workplace. The best thing to do is just make an effort - try as hard as you
can and you’ll be amazed at how productive you can become. Planning is progress. Planning is the most important thing you can do to encourage success. Rolling out of bed each day with no notion in your head of what you plan to do is a waste of time and a recipe for disaster. Successful people have a plan. They set goals and navigate their working life around conquering those goals. Get strong. Everyone has a weakness or two within their professional life - a bad habit or something that drags them down. Spot these weaknesses and make an effort to improve. If you are a nervous public speaker but fancy your chances of becoming a manager, then make sure to work on this weakness. Attend a class; do whatever it takes to turn your weakness into a strength.

Two suitors A CONSORTIUM headed by Spanish company Cepsa wants to buy British energy company Salamander. The oil and gas exploration company which operates in Indonesia and Thailand, confirmed the Cepsa proposal plus another from Londonbased Ophir Energy. The approach by firms would be subject to a “number of conditions,” Salamander said.
Hard times MILK prices fell by almost 20 per cent in October from 39 and 40 cents a litre to around 33 cents, coinciding with the renewal of three and six-monthly contracts between dairy farmers and milk companies. The government will introduce obligatory 12month contracts next year to forestall destabilised markets.

Check it out WE have just returned from the worst holiday ever, so a word of warning on booking a holiday. If the advert says “We pick you up from your house,” ask for the route. We were collected at 5.45am and after running around on a coach for three and a quarter hours were only 30 minutes from home! Also ask what type of transport they use: we were on a small runaround for 12 hours. It was like sitting on a spin-dryer for the whole journey. Do your homework on the location and accommodation. We booked a cruise and required an outside cabin for fresh air and a quiet time. We were not told that the only outside cabins were directly below the activities deck! Dressing up POOR Mike Walsh! Having become a solid member of the style police he is missing a few very important points about dress and performance. He is clearly unaware that Mr Steve Jobs built the Apple computer empire by allowing his employees to dress in whatever mode made them feel good: look at the result. I listen to a variety of local English-speaking radio stations and it has now become the norm for radio presenters to chatter on about everything other than the artist singing. During a long drive that lasted over two hours only one artist’s name was given! What is wrong with presenters? Surely the role of DJs is to actually present music? That means informing the listening public of the title of the song and the artist. Can we have less of the inane chatter and incessant promotions of everything other than the music played?

Long way I HAVE just read a Euro Weekly News article about the increased number of people using Alicante airport. A lot of this is due to the fact Jet2 are not using Murcia airport during the winter months, to the inconvenience of thousands of people living in the area. Sadly my husband died a few years ago, but I still spend the winter months in La Manga. A few months ago when trying to book my flights for this winter I found none landed at Murcia and I was left with the only option of Alicante airport. There are no Jet2 flights to Murcia until the end of March next year and none of the other airlines offer flights. Alicante is a good airport but there is no public transport down to La Manga and a taxi costs €120, so we are left

Christmas cheer ONCE again San Miguel de Salinas Social Services are asking for help with their Christmas campaign for the less fortunate of our local community. There are over 70 families, all with at least three children up to the age of 17, registered with Social Services in the village. They are asking for nonperishable foods along with some festive fare and toys so they can make up food parcels and gifts for Christmas and the Three Kings. The main collection point is in the old town hall in San Miguel, but a number of local restaurants, bars and businesses have kindly agreed to be collection points. These are Dolphin Properties, Captain Morgan’s Bar, Mirador Restaurant and The Nook. Social Services are asking for all items to be in to them by December 5 so they can be individually wrapped for each family and child. How to vote REGISTERING to vote has changed in the UK. Whereas before each household had one form for everybody who lived in the property, each individual who is eligible now has to complete a form, giving address, full name, date of birth and NI number. Those wanting to register for next year’s General Election (if still eligible) can do it online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. You need your last address in the UK, full name, date of birth and NI number. You can apply for a proxy if you want, which is recommended as there may not be enough time to receive your ballot paper and return it. Forgive and forget? Not likely! LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

UST had to happen, didn’t it? It was as predictable as the flowers in May or the X Factor judges using the word ‘amazing’ about a million times a show. We are now being asked to feel sorry for some of these young toerags who left UK shores to side with the odious ISIS. “It’s not their fault,” cry the ‘uman rights brigade. It’s the media allowing the evil radicalizers to publicise their views that should be taking the blame for their terrorist temptations. What a load of pure unadulterated claptrap! I don’t care how ‘fresh faced’, ‘well liked’ and ‘innocent’ these young men and women were. They are evil psychopaths who have committed treason against the country that
nurtured them and partaken in unforgivable acts of satanic terrorism. If they return to British shores, all of them must be locked away for life. “Oh, but some of them are too frightened to come back,” wail the parents, who should, to my mind, be locked up as well. The poor diddums have become fed up with sawing off people’s heads and shooting unarmed victims in the back. “We wanna come home now, Mum.” Get back to how it all was before we decided to run off and kill people. Well I’ve got news for them. They have all forfeited their right to ever live among decent human beings again. They are the scum of the earth and so is anyone who supports them including the lawyers who are no doubt gathering like the vultures they are to once more bleed the British taxpayer out of millions, fighting cases that will no doubt drag on for years. If I had my way I’d lock them up as well. To me they are not much better
than the non-human rubbish they will be earning millions to defend. Shouldn’t really be angry this week. Things are actually quite good. For the next two weeks I am appearing back in the old Motherland with shows as far apart as Norfolk and Blackpool. Channel 5’s OAPs Behaving Badly is coming over to film my Flying Curry Circus Christmas party on December 13. Venue to be announced. Plug plug! (Yes, I am doing it again, despite the fact that I’m still trying to live down the first one!) My double pneumonia is finally over and hopefully I don’t have prostate cancer. So it’s onward and upward. Next week’s scribble will issue from the cold and windy shores of the old country, provided I don’t get stopped at the border! NSURPRISINGLY, a huge leap in UKIP support was reported following the £1.7 billion EU surcharge imposed on the UK to reflect the ‘black economy’ of illegal drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling within its GDP. Now, this isn’t a molehill, it’s a mountain! The EU’s penalising the UK for having the most successful economy in the EU, whilst rewarding countries like France for being economic basket cases! And as for the EU’s attempts to dismiss the problem by claiming these are the rules, no way! The
EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: The EU needs deep reform. real issue is: how have the rules been interpreted and applied? It seems blindingly obvious different countries have different ways of operating. And that the UK has taken a more meticulous
approach to reporting income from such intangible sources as drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling than Germany, France or Austria - all lined up for rebates. Or maybe failed to smell
a rat where others, more savvy, did? Unfortunately, Britain is a land of rule-makers and administrators. Show it a rule, and it’ll be applied unquestioningly. Other countries decide on different criteria. The real tragedy of the EU is that the shedloads of tax-payers’ money which have been and are still being wasted - on moving between Strasbourg and Brussels, bloated bureaucracy, pay and allowances, and duplicated diplomatic representation - would, spent sensibly under individual nations’ control, have resulted in greater prosperity and better defence against terrorists. The EU is like a rudderless ship driven by ideology and holed below the waterline. Rather than make crucial structural repairs, it settles for quick-fixes and takes on more payload (regulation,
centralisation and bureaucracy) so guaranteeing it slinks further behind and deeper in the water. And unless it endorses immediate reform - including reduction of bureaucracy and regulation, liberalisation of labour markets, overhaul of immigration controls - the UK runs the risk of going down with it. Finally, let’s return to that £1.7 billion surcharge that, we’re told, now takes account of drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling. Doesn’t this number somehow indicate the UK spends more on those items than basic foodstuffs? Given my own food bill, it seems some of my fellow citizens are having a lot more fun than me! What did you experience in your youth that kids today never will?

N the Costa Blanca, the general view is that the main thing kids today will never experience is simply
being kids. Neil Couzens from Zenia Services said one thing he enjoyed as a child that youngsters today probably don’t was ‘building camps, and bows and arrows.’ He added: “Society has changed and everything is based around technology now and I think that is a shame.

STREET TALK Children aren’t learning skills from their parents any more although I do believe the introduction of technology has made youngsters more intelligent; they know how to find answers thanks to the likes of Google.” Keith Owen from Solar Directa believed children now miss out on the freedom to play outdoors. “I grew up in Somerset by the seaside and we would be out playing all day, getting up to all sorts before we had to come home. There were no mobile phones and parents didn’t worry, but the world is a lot uglier now and you can’t do that, parents need to be stricter,” he said. Karen from Mijas TV commented: “Kids are lucky nowadays in that they do not have to experience smoke-filled bars, restaurants, aeroplanes and offices. When I was younger everywhere we went there were smokers and as a non-
smoker all my life, I didn’t like it but had to put up with it.” Mark Scott from Aroma restaurant in Mallorca recalled ‘drinking from a hosepipe.’ Children nowadays are told not to drink from hosepipes because of the chances of catching some awful disease and Mark thinks it’s a shame as it was a fond childhood memory of his. Nicole King from Mi Marbella said ‘dialling a telephone’. She added: “Today’s youngsters will never experience the actual term ‘to dial a number’ because we have push-button phones and not the old-fashioned ‘get your finger twisted’ style like in the old days!” Ann Baxter from Mojacar Windows and Doors commented: “When we were young, we could go off into the woods to explore on our own. We had a lot more freedom than children today.”

Life will be easier, they said Mike Walsh Mike, based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.
I
AM of the generation that looks back with fond memories at the simplicity of life in the 1950s and 60s. If you received a bill you wrote out a cheque, shoved it in the reply paid envelope and popped it in the letterbox. What has happened since? I will tell you: they said computers would make our lives easier. We receive a €20 subscription renewal payable online. Logging on, the complexity of navigation makes progress virtually impossible. We finally reach ‘pay’ but our troubles are only just beginning. Our bank, in its lack of wisdom, now requires online payments to be authorised by using codes printed on the back of a plastic card: fail. Although assured our cards were kosher we now find ours had been wrongly registered. Before a replacement card solution is arrived at, a series of computer hurdles that would try the patience of a NASA scientist must be gone through. Our internet service provider messes up
its accounts. As a consequence an incorrect payment anomaly shows up. No, they don’t sort out their problem. They need bank approved proof of our payments to satisfy them that we have indeed paid. This necessitates several time-consuming trips between the bank and the service supplier’s offices. Henry Ford was wasting his time when he said: “If it aint broke don’t fix it.” A basic can-opener was in the kitchen drawer in my young life. A simple device of a type used since before the Zulu Wars. This simple functional implement today is an allsinging and dancing model, but as useless as a walking stick with a wheel on it. When Phileas Fogg went on his 80 Days Around the World odyssey, a traveller could catch a train at Liverpool Lime Street and be in Manchester quicker than he can today. Purchasing a ticket was far easier. You simply bought it from the teller. You now have a formidable series of computerised and highly confusing procedures to negotiate. The number of illegal non-European immigrants in the UK is estimated in the millions. Although I am born and bred British, I cannot take my Spanish resident Central European wife to see our family in
Britain. The costs and complexities of a visa to visit this offshore European island are far too onerous. In simpler times, the RAF brought rebellious Iraq and Afghanistan to their knees by dropping £5 bombs on their £1 peasant huts. Today, the RAF fails to defeat these ‘tribesmen’ with the FGR4 Typhoon fighter that cost £17.6 billion to develop, priced at £110 million each and cost £3,875 an hour to demolish the same peasant’s hut. This week, hapless Britain washes its hands of its débâcle. Talking of washing one’s hands, whilst browsing in my medical centre I check out a 10-illustration diagram instructing me how to wash my hands. Yes, life will be easier they lied.

Don’t get down about the small stuff - draw on your inner strength Erica Russell Watson: My journey – and I’m driving

SEPTEMBER: Back at home a bit bruised and sore, but happy to be in familiar surroundings. The next few days would be all about rest, getting my drain taken out when the levels had dropped sufficiently and above all taking things easy with my right arm. I was under strict instructions not to lift anything or to exert myself in any way. I had been unaware initially what the long-term implications of having all my lymph nodes removed would be. As I no longer had a lymphatic drainage system I could be left with a serious side-effect called Lymphedema. Lymphedema is a condition of localised fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system which returns liquid to the thoracic duct and then the bloodstream. So tissues with lymphedema are at risk of infection and swelling. There are exercises and physiotherapy you can do to help your system but I will go into this in future blogs. Prevention is better than cure! Hence no lifting, no lying on the affected side, no tight clothing and, in the longer-term, avoidance of
ERICA: Finding ways to adapt when the simplest tasks become impossible. rigorous sports and when doing any sport I would have to wear an arm support for compression purposes. For me this was going to be the most challenging aspect! The cancer and operations I could deal with, but the prospect of possibly not being able to play racket sports for the long-term or even indefinitely was going to be tough to take. You just have to find alternatives or learn to play left-handed!
For those of you who have cancer and have children, my tip is to be as honest as possible.
Also the realisation that the simplest tasks, in the short-term, would be impossible hit home - no chopping food, washing up, changing the beds, opening
things, lifting and definitely no driving for a few weeks. So what do you do? Adapt. Necessity is the mother of all invention. I started to use my left arm for most tasks. The sight of me sitting on my kitchen work surface on top of a grater and using my left hand to muster a sprinkling of lemon zest must have been something else! Incidentally, freeze lemons and grate the rinds into your food, not only does it intensify the flavour but it is supposed to be an enemy to cancer, so a friend to us! Don’t get too down over these smaller issues and find another way of doing things. We are all stronger than we imagine, it’s just that we don’t realise it until we are tested. Draw on your inner strength and you will be amazed how you overcome every obstacle put in your way. For me every day got better; I ate well thanks to the army of Spanish neighbours and friends bringing food to my door like ants! My son became my nurse and changed my bandages, much to his credit, as many adults would have balked at the sight of my scars. For those of you who have cancer and have children, my tip is to be as honest as possible but carry on as normal. Every cloud has a silver lining and my illness has given us all an opportunity to recalibrate. It was time the children took on more
responsibility domestically and they have stepped up to the challenge. Aside from cooking, cleaning, washing and general household chores, it has become a time for them to show greater maturity and autonomy. It has been tough for them but pulling together helps me along the road to recovery so I applaud their efforts and their spirit despite some grumbles at first! My hope is that living through this experience will make them more resilient and better able to cope with the challenges that life will inevitably throw at them over the coming years. Lead by example. If you are a bag of nerves, just imagine how your children and people around you will feel! No shame in having a good cry, I hold my hand up! It is a good release but get over it and dust yourself off and get off the canvas. A little dramatic? Not really - you are in a battle for your life. You have to go the full 10 rounds so come out your corner fighting with your gloves up. You will beat cancer with a positive attitude. Your illness is a journey and one that will deal you curve balls. My curve ball was just about to be launched… the phone call I had been waiting for with my operation results came. The news was not good.

Organ transplants in Spain are on course to reach a new record THIS year could mark a new record for the number of organ donations and transplants in Spain. Based on the figures so far for 2014, the Director of the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), Rafael Matesanz, said: “Everything suggests that Spain will surpass the record this year.” Last year, more than 4,000 donations and transplants were recorded. Probiotic choc-ice could help prevent sore throats AUTUMN is here and it may not be ice cream weather any more, but a new choc-ice could be just what the doctor ordered in helping to ward off sore throats. Scientists at a dental college and hospital in India have tested a chocice containing a friendly bacteria, which is normally found in the human intestines, to see if it had any effect
on streptococcus, the strain of bacteria that commonly causes sore throats. Thirty volunteers were asked to eat a choc-ice every day for 18 days. Half of the group ate a normal choc-ice and the other half a probiotic one. Those eating the probiotic treat were shown to have lower levels of streptococci in their saliva.

The poll was released this week ahead of National Stress Awareness Day and shows that sleep is the main activity that suffers when stress rears its ugly head. Thirty-six per cent of people lose sleep or unable to sleep at all (32 per cent), while 10 per cent admitted to waking up in a state of panic.

Bin cough medicines and go for honey and lemon NHS bosses and leading doctors in the UK say cough medicines are a waste of money and traditional home-made remedies with lemon or honey are the best approach. Cough medicines are part of an overthe-counter healthcare industry worth billions a year. However, the NHS Choices website said: “There’s little evidence to suggest cough medicines actually work, although some ingredients may help treat symptoms associated with a cough, such as a blocked nose or fever.” It added that cough medicines should never be taken for more than two weeks. It concluded that cheap, home-made remedies containing honey and lemon work just as well for treating a shortterm cough as it is caused by a viral infection and will normally clear up after the immune system has fought off the virus.

HE latest political scandal’s codename Punica was suggested by punica granatum and a play on the surname of Francisco Granados. Accused with an associate of stashing an illegal €5.8 million in Switzerland, he is an exsenator and was second in charge after Esperanza Aguirre when she was regional president of the Madrid Community. Aguirre, who is now secretary general of the regional PP, insisted that she didn’t have “the slightest idea” of what Granados was up to. In the same breath she called for the courts to speed up the ongoing Gurtel case - another pun,
this time on the surname of its principal player Francisco Correa, incidentally. After six years it still hasn’t come to court, Aguirre complained. Not that she was trying to deflect attention away from Granados, of course.
More trouble MARIANO RAJOY must feel
like William Collingbourne as he was being hanged, drawn and quartered in 1484: “Oh Lord Jesus, yet more trouble!” he groaned. The president, the governing PP and to a lesser extent the PSOE socialists, all face yet more trouble in the shape of another huge politiccorruption scandal. Over the last two years 51 local and regional politicians
including six mayors and high-ranking officials in Madrid, Valencia, Murcia and Leon raked in illegal commissions of between €6 and €7 million on government contracts worth €250 million. While 300 people a day were evicted from their homes, small businesses went under and employees accepted wage cuts to retain their jobs, these
public servants creamed off money during the worst economic crisis Spain has ever endured. Nor did they do it for the greater good of party funds because that cash wasn’t destined for a spot of illicit double-accounting and salary top-ups. Every cent of it went into their own pockets and every cent of it came from the taxpayer. And every cent of those €250 million will cost the two national parties dear when those taxpayers vote in next year’s elections.

He has a responsibility towards UPyD voters, he said. And, friendship notwithstanding, a hunger for power and generous Brussels expenses?

THERE are few properties that would not be enhanced by one or two window boxes placed on a window sill or edge of a balcony, or the wall or balustrades of an apartment terrace. Window boxes planted with traditional geraniums, or a wide range of other suitable plants, are an easy way to brighten up the facades of some otherwise drab houses and apartment blocks throughout the year. So let’s look at the opportunity in more detail. Why window boxes? Window boxes serve several purposes. 1. To brighten up the outlook from windows and doors onto balconies and terraces. 2. To provide a screen from prying eyes. 3. To brighten up the appearance of the house from outside. 4. To give the appearance that the house or apartment is lived in. 5. To brighten up dull courtyards. 6. To brighten up the semi shade under large trees by hanging window boxes directly from boughs or on hanging shelves. Overcoming problem of plastic coated aluminium windows Most traditionally built houses have convenient wide outside window sills that provide space for window boxes between the window frames and wrought iron

Fortunately many garden centres now stock window boxes with metal supports that can be hung below the window sill. Similar supports can be attached to the railings of an apartment terrace. What to plant? All year round: Zonal and trailing geraniums/pelargoniums - except in the heavy frost/snow belt where they need to be put in a cold frame or a greenhouse for the winter. Spring, summer and autumn: Trailing petunias, portulacas, zonal and trailing geraniums/pelargoniums, carnations, felicia /agathaea, succulents and in the shade fuchsias and busy lizzies. Spring: Trailing sweet peas, verbena and freesias. Autumn and winter: Heathers and pansies. Winter: Cyclamens, poinsettias, pansies, stocks and bulbs such as hyacinths and daffodils.
WINDOW BOXES: Can also be hung from railings. Colour can also be provided by the fruit and foliage of plants. a. Fruits - the fruits on mock pepper and mini pomegranate plants can look very attractive during the autumn. b. Foliage - begonias, spider plant, variegated ivies, herbs - on the widow sill outside the
kitchen - and dwarf conifers in semi shaded situations. If you are an absentee gardener we suggest that you restrict your window boxes to trailing geraniums/pelargoniums, and drought resistant succulents and cacti. If you use the property infrequently, I
suggest that you replant your window boxes each time you visit. What type of window boxes can be planted up? Every year new and improved terracotta, ceramic and plastic window boxes appear. Some of the latter have

The animals which are starving, thin and in need of love, prompted two college students from Chile, Violeta Caro Pinda and Felipe Carrasco Guzman, to raise awareness with a creative approach.
The two undergraduates tied pink balloons around street dogs and cats which have phrases written on them like, ‘hug me,’ ‘play with me,’ and the most poignant one, ‘don’t leave me.’ The pair are hoping the rest of the world will take on their example and spread a bit of kindness and happiness to these forlorn and neglected creatures.
IF a previously friendly cat starts biting or scratching you, it is essential you take it to the vet. A cat in pain from dental disease, cystitis, arthritis or injury may bite when handled. It may bite if it is seriously ill or if it has a brain tumour. Pregnant cats or cats with litters are aggressive in defence of their litters. When the kittens have grown up, the mother’s behaviour usually alters. NEVER punish or chase. This will intensify aggression. Ignore bad behaviour by walking away, keeping silent (no screams), withdrawing eye contact, no confrontations. Reward calm behaviour with cat treats. Avoid situations which will result in cat aggression. The difficulty for owners is working out what kind of aggression they are dealing with. This is where help from a cat behaviour counsellor can be essential to help reduce and manage the aggression. Aggression to humans often results from fear. The

problem may arise from a dysfunctional kittenhood. The kitten is brought up without enough contact with humans, and therefore will never become domesticated. To be truly domesticated, kittens need to be handled before the age of eight weeks. Relatively socialised cats may still bond, but probably only to close family. It will be best to give this kind of cat plenty of space and independence. Allow the cat to initiate contact with you, as this freedom to choose will result in more, rather than less, affection. Previous Pet Ownership/Experience - Ask about their personal pet ownership experience. 4. Understanding Pet Routines Anyone who cares for a pet will understand that there are different
feeding and care routines, but pets are usually creatures of habit. 5. References/Police Checks - Ask for recent references. Police checks are very useful too.

A STREET circuit karting race conceived in Monaco had its debut in Spain recently. Moll Vell marina in Mallorca was transformed into an 880 metre street circuit for the inaugural Palma Port Kart Cup. Team PH Mallorca, with two karts entered, including one piloted by future F1 star Roberto Merhi, took pole position and a third-place finish in the three-hour endurance
race as well as an impressive first place in the one-hour feature race. Alec Dudfield from property developers, PH Mallorca, said: “Sponsored by Red Bull and conceived in Monaco, this foundational Palma Port Kart Cup had all the ingredients for success, so we pulled out the stops to field two great teams. “In Kart 17 we had 23year-old Roberto Merhi, an upcoming F1 star from Castellon who raced in FP1 for Caterham at Monza, Suzuki and Sochi this season, alongside Riccardo Homuth, a Balearic karting champion from Santa Ponsa, Mark Owens, a World Series Superkart race winner from Northamptonshire, and Mike Richards, Founder of PH Mallorca in Port Andratx and a former Porsche Carrera Cup driver. “In Kart 16 we raced Miguel Julià, the 2006 world karting champion from Palma de Mallorca, Nil Monserrat, a professional racing driver from Barcelona, and Coach Pedro Ivar, owner of Pedro Ivars Racing Academy in Denia. “Needless to say our plan worked and it was great to see Merhi earn a deserved pole and Kart 16 take two podium finishes including the top step. “With highly competitive wheel-to-wheel racing on the street circuit, we’re looking forward to defending our success when the Palma Port Kart Cup returns for its second outing.”

Annual McCracken Trophy GINS played the McCracken Trophy annual event which has been held at Los Moriscos for the last 12 years. A great turnout of 58
players played the trophy, with more than 60 poeople attending the dinner and prize-giving afterwards. Winner of the men’s competition this year was Mike Cummings (39 points) with Bev Legg (37) second and Simon Noxon (37) third. Malcolm Ritchie (36pts) was fourth with Ian Fairbrother, Keith Taylor and Pat Dineen (all 35 points) sharing fifth place. For the ladies the winner was Ann Raper (32) with Rita McCracken (31) second, Linda Anderson (29) third and Sylvia Legg (29pts) third.
