Stars in Almeria to film new blockbuster A MAJOR Hollywood movie project currently being filmed in Almeria has brought a whole host of stars to the city. Clavius – a depiction of events based on the missing body of Christ following his crucifixion – has turned much of Almeria into a movie set and has witnessed some of the big screen’s top names pop up in locations around town. And thousands of locals have been applying for roles as extras in the movie – due for general release in 2015 – in scenes reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s visit to the area to film Exodus last year.

Joseph Fiennes (pictured), Peter Firth, Maria Botto and Stephen Hagan all star in the Kevin Reynolds-directed biblical epic about the 50 days following Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection. Fiennes plays the lead role as an agnostic Roman centurion dispatched by Pontius Pilate to investigate the resurrection of Christ. Some of the actors have been taking to Twitter to let their followers know just how enjoyable they are finding their time in Almeria. Stephen Hagan – the Northern Irish actor described by the New York Times as “an immensely promising talent” – treated his followers to a photo of the

beautiful Playa de los Genoveses and tweeted: “A hard day at the office.” And Maria Botto said: “Almeria is truly paradise. Such beauty.” Just last year Almeria was struck with Hollywood fever as Ridley Scott came to town to film Exodus, starring Christian Bale and Aaron Paul. Both stars regularly took to Twitter to express their love of the area. Hollywood’s love affair with Almeria won’t stop once Clavius is done, however. Arnold Schwarzenegger is due in the city to film the next Conan movie. The star was in Almeria in September to receive an award and a star on the city’s Walk of Fame.

Serious action against kennels VELEZ-RUBIO kennels are open to disciplinary proceedings from the Junta of Andalucia after the discovery of appalling conditions. The case, opened on October 14, includes a proposed penalty of up to €8,000 for various offences. It also names the owner of the kennels as the town of VelezRubio and declares it as allegedly responsible for four

serious violations of administrative regulations relating to animals. The fine breaks down to €2,000 for not keeping the animals in sanitary conditions, €2,000 for failing to provide adequate food, €2,000 for breaching set conditions for premises of its type and €2,000 for failing to administer mandatory

Giving a helping hand…

W

E here at EWN were among the first to congratulate two hardy cyclists who pedalled from Yorkshire to Southern Spain for charity. The reason? Well, the cycle’s finishing point was at our offices in Benalmadena! Paul Kearns and Steven Tindall cycled 2,000 miles through three countries in aid of two wonderful charities and we were proud to be a part of the event. Without suffering one single puncture between them during their 26-day trip, the ‘two blokes and two bikes’ travelled from Baildon, Bradford, down through France and then on to Benidorm, Costa Blanca, and through Alicante and Malaga before finishing at the EWN offices, tired but in good cheer. The dedication and

determination they showed to power their bikes through all sorts of adverse weather conditions has to be admired. And with more than £10,000 (€12,500) raised for charity, they deserve all the thanks in the world as well as a hardearned rest. It makes us proud to see expat people in Spain doing what they can to raise money for good causes, and Paul and Steven’s trip was just one of thousands of events that take place every year organised by people for the good of their communities and for worthwhile causes. We take it upon ourselves to support various events and charity causes, and would likewise encourage the expat community, wherever they may be in Spain, to get involved in any good causes close to home.

A sell-out for Pantoja APPROXIMATELY 2,000 people travelled to Huercal Overa to watch Isabel Pantoja perform. She presented songs from her new tour and album, Until The Sun Burns Out, to a sell-out crowd. Pantoja, known for her

magnificent costumes, looked spectacular in a bejewelled cream gown. Her costumes, voice, the staging and a team of 40 professionals all came together seamlessly to entertain the audience. Pantoja has been performing since the mid70s, and comes from a family of performers. Her history has been colourful at times, including her arrest in 2013 for allegedly being an accomplice to her ex-boyfriend Julian Muñoz who was accused of money laundering and bribery. She was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison. However, she managed to avoid incarceration by paying a fine of €4 million.

Vera Lions to host Halloween fundraiser VERA and District Lions Club will be hosting a charity Halloween Party in Bar Laguna at Vera Playa on Friday, October 31. Although fancy dress is not compulsory, it is encouraged to get into the party mood so the Lions are asking everyone to dig out their spooky costumes. Music is being provided by Les G, and Bar Laguna will be providing a barbeque meal for €15 per person. The evening’s events kick off at 7pm. Granada/ Almeria AVE impasse THE Development Ministry has clear priorities regarding its railway policies in Granada Province: finishing the AVE between the capital and Antequera and remodelling Andaluces station. What is going on, however, with the AVE between Granada and Almeria? Very little has been done in the last five years since the PSOE first launched the project, which has been allocated a symbolic amount of money – €20,330 – in the General State Budget for next year. The funds could be interpreted as meaning that the Ministry of Development is in no hurry to start studying the actual route in the short term, said ideal.es. Road transport is just not feasible TRANSPORTING suspected Ebola patients by ground from Almeria to Sevilla is not feasible and would be counter-productive, warned Spanish nurses. On Monday (October 21) nurses from the Public Health Emergency Service (EPES) 061 in Almeria urged the Junta to refrain from sending all potential Ebola cases to Hospital Virgen del Rocio in Sevilla. Taking the patients from Almeria to Sevilla by ground is implausible for emergency technicians and completely counter-productive for the patient, said Jose Miguel Garrido Molina, Union Delegate of Comisiones Obreras - largest trade union in Spain - talking to ideal.es. As stated by Molina, it would take the emergency technicians between eight and 10 hours to get the patient to Sevilla, they would have to stop four different times to change their protective suits (in Guadix, Loja, Osuna and Virgen del Rocio) and the entire journey would put the patient under excessive physical and psychological stress. The journey would also increase the risk of contagion and destabilise the patient, said nurses.

Furthermore, it entails certain technical difficulties, including the potential dehydration of the emergency technicians. During a drill conducted weeks ago, their weight dropped two kilograms because of excessive sweating, said Garrido. “We were exhausted when we got there and it was just 100 kilometres. Imagine what would happen in an eight-hour journey,” he said. According to Garrido, adapting a mobile intensive care ambulance - known in Spain as UVI movil - for Ebola patients is risky. “The ambulance is completely sealed so the temperature increases exponentially. If you add that to the fact that the patient is running a fever, it could do irreparable damage to his or her health.” “We are not asking for a raise. We just want to continue offering people a quality service and our experience tells us that this protocol violates all recommendations regarding nurses’ exposure to the virus and it puts the patient in jeopardy,” he warned. 061 Almeria sent a document to the Junta de Andalucia (regional government) detailing the risks involved in transporting a patient by ground from Almeria to Sevilla and recommend it be done by air.

Unemployment programme NINETY ONE people in Roquetas de Mar are to benefit from an employment programme. Mayor Gabriel Amat and Human Resources and Employment councillor Francisca Toresano gave a warm welcome to the 91 people chosen to participate in a programme promoting social inclusion through employment. They are to work for three

months in gardening, construction and cleaningrelated activities. The programme is funded by the European Union, the Junta de Andalucia and the council. As many as 651 people applied for the employment programme. Most of the applicants have been unemployed for a long time and have relatives to look after.

While it is true that the programme is not a definitive solution to unemployment, it does help them to temporarily alleviate the difficult situation many of them are going through as far as finding a job is concerned, said the mayor. The mayor is optimistic the unemployment rate will soon be below 10 per cent and not as it is right now.

Arboleas council buys new police car to help improve surveillance LOCAL POLICE in Arboleas have a new police car. The council had no choice but to buy a new car, given the bad condition of one of the patrol cars, said Arboleas Mayor Cristobal Garcia.

The acquisition will help the police improve surveillance in the municipality. “The car is completely adequate to the service (it will be used for) and it meets the requirements established by law enforcement,” said the mayor.

Police save man’s trapped finger TWO officers from the National Police have saved a man’s finger after it was trapped in the door of his truck. Officers reacted quickly, wrapping the severed finger in ice and transported the man to a nearby health centre for treatment. The accident happened at a

supermarket on Calle Alcalde Munoz in Almeria City. Luckily the police were patrolling the area when they were approached by a supermarket worker who told them of the incident which had just occurred. The officers reacted immediately, wrapping the finger in ice and rushing the man to the doctor. Because of their rapid action, the finger was able to be reattached.

Work resumes on tunnelling at Garrucha port

UNDERGROUND work on the access routes to the port of Garrucha has been resumed by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. The industrial work, at a budget of €7.4 million, is currently at 53 per cent of completion and the remaining work is estimated to take 10 months. The work is to improve the surface of the roads for heavy traffic accessing Garrucha port. The repairs form part of the planned actions from the Ministry of Works aimed at improving performance for local businesses.

Immigrants detained OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested seven North African immigrants who arrived by boat in Almeria. The Guardia Civil officers were waiting on the beach when they arrived. Once detained, they were treated by Cruz Roja volunteers.

Gang sought after burglary and kidnap OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil are seeking four men who robbed a business, attacking a man and kidnapping his wife in the process. The brutal attack occurred close to El Ejido on the evening of Friday, October 17. A middle-aged couple were closing up their business for the night when four men swooped on the couple and forced them to reopen the business. Once inside, the assailants demanded money and attacked the man, kicking and punching him into submission. They threatened to kill the couple of they did not reveal where money and valuables were kept. After repeated attacks the man took the burglars to the safe and handed over the money. However, the nightmare was not over for the couple because the gang kidnapped the wife and threatened to kill her if the husband contacted the police. Two of

the burglars left in the vehicle they had arrived in while the other two took the woman and left in the couple’s car. The husband contacted the Guardia Civil in El Ejido, who sprang into action. More than 50 officers began searching the area immediately, and setting up roadblocks. The woman was found in the early hours of Sunday morning at Aguilas Alto next to her car. The burglars had torched their own vehicle, a few metres away. The woman, apparently unharmed, was taken to Poniente hospital for a check-up. Meanwhile, the officers examined both vehicles for any evidence or information that would help in locating the violent gang. The Guardia Civil believes this was a planned attack and investigations are continuing to try to locate the gang members and bring them to justice.

explained: “NASA invites people to send their name beyond the earth every time we send a new probe to Mars in order to promote the event and to raise people’s interest in it.” Parra added: “A piece of me will be in Mars and stay there until the end of time.” Names are on a microchip.

Mother and son in tragedy THE 72-year-old woman accidentally hit by her son’s car has died in hospital. The woman stepped out from behind a fig tree as her son approached in his SUV. Unfortunately he did not see her, and crashed into her. Low light has been named as one of the causes for the accident because it occurred at 8.30pm. The woman hit her head, suffering

severe internal bleeding. She was initially taken to Inmaculada hospital in Huercal Overa, but was transferred to Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City due to the severity of her injuries. Mayor of Albox, Rogelio Men, described the accident as a real tragedy and lamented: “an accidental death has left the family steeped in sadness.”

Charity helps children to get free glasses IN October 2013, Optics Federopticos Centrovision, Ven-T, and the Department of Social Services and Women in El Ejido set up a nonprofit organisation. Now, 30 children have received free glasses from the organisation. It began when a woman took her 10-year-old son to Federopticos Centrovision. A price was

given for the cheapest glasses possible but unfortunately the woman could still not afford them. She approached Social Services for financial aid, but it was still not enough to cover the price of the special prescription. The organisations got talking and No Child Without Glasses was born.

Happy ending for griffon vulture GUARDIA CIVIL, through its SEPRONA division, have rescued a griffon vulture after it plunged into the sea at Playa del Marques in Vera. The bird had fallen into water but was unable to get airborne again. A passerby had managed to restrain the large bird by draping a towel over it until SEPRONA agents arrived. The officers took over the care of

the vulture until representatives from the Patrol Protection of Nature (PAPRONA) could take responsibility for it as it is a protected species. The bird was wet, exhausted, and unable to fly, but has since recovered and has now been released. The man who originally found the bird told agents that he observed the bird flying towards the shore when it was caught by waves.

UK and Spanish students making a film together A JOINT project between students from Almeria and Scarborough in the UK is about to begin shooting the second part of a new film. The film, Pirates and Princesses, has

already filmed a number of scenes in Scarborough when the Almeria students travelled there in June. Theatre events on in Albox ALBOX’S La Parilla Hotel and Restaurant is the venue for three days of plays from Almanzora Charitable Theatre, members of which are raising funds for Helping Animals Almanzora (HAA). The performances run from November 7 to 9, the weekend after the Albox feria. The lead feature is Heads, a play by Alistair Falkner. The plot revolves around a mother and daughter with an old grudge, leading to them not seeing or speaking to each other for many years. Then there is a performance of Don Nigro’s Ballerinas. Concluding the evening is a performance of Richard Tydeman’s Fiesta Fandango, the tale of a Spanish family of note. Don Lopez, the father, has arranged for his daughter to marry an old, yet in his opinion, very desirable suitor. Needless to say, Rosina, the daughter, is not impressed. The machinations culminate in a jaunty conclusion. The curtain goes up on Friday and Saturday at 7pm, and at 4pm on the Sunday afternoon.

Financial help for farmers BRUSSELS must provide financial assistance to aubergine and courgette farmers, said COAG. The Russian ban on agricultural products continues wreaking havoc in the agriculture sector, as demonstrated by the fact that aubergine and courgette prices have taken a nosedive in recent weeks. “The price of aubergine is not even 15 cents per kilogram and courgette prices dropped by 50 per cent last week,” said Provincial Secretary of COAG Almeria Andres Gongora. “It is imperative that Spain exert pressure on Brussels so that they include both in the list of products being provided financial assistance,” he added.

Sixty cannabis plants in Berja GUARDIA CIVIL officers have detained the alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health. The arrest is the result of the constant efforts of the Guardia Civil in the area, particularly in the fight against the cultivation, processing and small-scale distribution of narcotics. The investigation was escalated after different officers examined the possible existence of marihuana in Berja. Advanced surveillance and investigations confirmed an address where there was a strong suspicion that

marihuana was being cultivated. Officers gained entry to the property after contacting the property owner by telephone, and discovered three floors contained large cannabis plants and a greenhouse containing plants in the early stages of growth. The officers went on to arrest AJGS on suspicion of a crime against public health, seizing 63 marihuana plants with a total yield weight of 4,800 grams. The detainee and details were delivered to Berja Magistrate’s Court.

Man detained for alleged child abuse OFFICERS from the National Police in Almeria have detained a man on suspicion of

child abuse. The parents of a 13year-old girl reported an incident to the National Police. In the alleged incident, the young girl was able to shake off the 52-year-old man’s advances and spoke to her family straight away. The police arrived on the scene immediately and detained the man. The man has no previous criminal record and the investigation remains open.

THE Supreme Court has confirmed a sentence of seven years and six months for a man who shot at a car in Calle Manuel Azaña in Almeria City. The court dismissed an appeal filed by the defendant’s representation, and sentenced him to six years for attempted murder and 18 months for illegal possession of firearms. In July 2012, the defendant (EGF), who was hidden between two vehicles parked close to traffic lights, fired a shot into a car towards a 20-year-old man which caught him in the arm and abdomen. The bullet continued its trajectory hitting a 42-year-old woman, wounding her in the elbow and abdomen. Despite his injuries, the young man was able to drive to the nearest police station where he and the woman received help. The shooter had previously admitted in court to firing the shot.

Huercal Overa’s queen is crowned IN a gala held at the Teatro Villa Huercal Overa, the Queen of the Feria was crowned. The gala was set in the style of 1001 Nights, with music by Maria Jesus Navarro. The eight candidates paraded in different outfits, some of which were donated by local businesses. Although the ladies were nervous, they put on a good show. However, only one could win, and it was Cristina Muñoz, who was chosen by a panel of jurors and members of the public with Ana Maria Peñero and Maria del Mar Ortiz as her ladies-in-waiting.

El Ejido bike run MORE than 300 cyclists departed El Ejido for the first stage in the Cicoturista del Poniente. This major cycling event was organised by Biciclub El Ejido and SD Dominguez Productions in collaboration with Instituto Municipal de Deportes El Ejido. It is the second year the event has been held and has broken attendance records from 2013. Councillor for Sports in El Ejido Jose Andres Cano said: “This is an important contest considering the strength of the various cycling clubs, the growing number of mountain bike athletes in the town and the increased triathlon club athletes.” The 125-kilomtere route started and finished in El Ejido, passing through neighbouring municipalities.

Two blokes, two bikes, 2,000 miles - finally completed

THEY made it. After 26 days in the saddle, two blokes on their two bikes powered up the final hill in Benalmadena, Malaga, to finish a 2,000-mile charity cycle outside the offices of Euro Weekly News (EWN) at lunchtime on Friday. They were greeted by a gathering of more than 40 well-wishers, friends and family, most of whom had flown over from the UK to greet Paul Kearns and Steven Tindall at the end of their epic journey. “We’re two minutes late,” joked Paul as he got off his bike and embraced his family. The pair of amateur cyclists set off from Baildon, Bradford, 26 days ago in order to raise money for two charities - Tomas Leighton Care and Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Without experiencing one single puncture along the way, the tired pair were “overwhelmed and relieved” to have finished their 2,000-mile journey. With more than £10,000 (€12,500) raised, Paul and Steven enjoyed a Champagne reception outside sponsors EWN’s offices to celebrate their feat. “It’s been an unforgettable experience and one we’ll never forget

as long as we’re alive,” said Paul. “It was tough going and at times very difficult and testing, but we’ve made it and enjoyed it along the way. Everybody we met

along the way, from the UK to the south of Spain, has been so great.” Nine-year-old Tomas Leighton, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and cortical blindness, was in Spain to greet his two heroes who powered their bikes through three countries to raise money for his cause. The two cyclists plan to recuperate and rest for a few days in Spain before heading back to the UK. “We won’t be doing much cycling this week,” they joked.

UK court rejects ETA extradition A UK court has refused to extradite an ETA member to Spain. Judge Emma Arbuthnot of the Westminster Magistrates’ Court rejected an extradition request filed by the National Court of Spain against ETA member Antonio Troitiño. The European arrest warrant under which he was detained in London earlier this year was invalid, said the judge. Troitiño is responsible for 22 murders and had been on the run since April 2011 before being arrested in February. He is wanted in Spain for allegedly rejoining the logistical network of ETA after he was set free in 2011. Spanish authorities have seven days to lodge an appeal against the ruling. During the hearing in London, Troitiño’s defence

The convicted ETA member served a 24-year sentence in Spain for terrorist attacks in the 80s, including one in 1986 against a Guardia Civil bus in Madrid, in which 12 police officers were killed and 50 hurt. British fugitive held in Madrid GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested 47-year-old Conrad T, the supposed leader of a criminal narcotics organisation. The Belgian authorities had been hunting for the man, who has a 10year sentence pending in Belgium, for bringing 155 kilograms of cocaine into

Belgium in July 2011 inside a shipment of tuna from Ecuador. He is also accused of belonging to an armed gang and of money laundering. In July 2013, the Guardia Civil received information placing Conrad in Spain. At first he was located in

Malaga Province, but the extreme security measures he used to avoid the police meant his trail was lost. Continued investigations brought to light the fact that he had a sporadic relationship with a woman in Madrid. He was sighted leaving her home on October 13, and arrested.

Use your brain to look after your heart... QUEEN Letizia of Spain has told women to use their brains to take care of their hearts. She was addressing women in Madrid at the official presentation of an awareness campaign on cardiovascular health. Launched at Real Casa de Correos, seat of Madrid’s Regional Government, Mujeres por el Corazon (Women for the Heart) is a pioneering project in Spain promoted by Fundacion Mapfre, Fundacion ProCNIC, the National Centre of Heart Research (CNIC) and the Community of Madrid. Queen Letizia took the floor at the end of the ceremony and encouraged women to get enough rest, follow a healthier diet and to avoid a sedentary lifestyle and smoking. She said: “It is time to slow down and take care of our hearts, and for that we need to use our brains.” She was accompanied

by the President of the Community of Madrid Ignacio Gonzalez, the Secretary for Equality and Social Affairs Susana Camarero, the CNIC Director Valentin Fuster and the President of Fundacion Mapfre Antonio Huertas. Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death among Spanish women, followed by cancer and other conditions. It is estimated that as many as 43,000 women died in Spain in 2012 as a result of heart-related problems. Through the campaign, Madrid women will receive a practical guide titled Cuidate Corazon (Take care of yourself, heart), which includes health tips, exercise routines and even recipes with heart-friendly ingredients. Young man rescued from fire NATIONAL POLICE officers in Madrid rescued a young man from a burning flat. The panic-stricken 25-year-old was going to jump out the window of a six-storey flat located on Calle de Goya in the Spanish capital before being rescued by the officers, who knocked down the door and used fire extinguishers to fight the flames. The alert was raised on Saturday October 4 at 7am by the police. When the officers arrived on the scene, they evacuated the burning building and heard the 25-year-old yelling for help. “Help. I am burning. I am going to jump out. I can’t take it any more. Help me,” he yelled. A police officer tried to reassure him while the door was being knocked down. Given the large flames and the amount of smoke coming out of the flat, the officers fruitlessly tried several times to enter the residence, finally deciding to use fire extinguishers and fight their way to where the man was. Moments later the firefighters arrived and brought the blaze under control. The 25-year-old was taken to a hospital, as well as some of the police officers, one of whom was treated for dizziness and respiratory problems.

Spain’s donations for Ebola less than Ikea HOME furnishings giant Ikea has donated more money to the fight against Ebola than Spain. According to the United Nations, Spain, Norway and Luxembourg have between them donated just €3.2 million to help fight the spread of the

killer disease. In contrast, Swedish furniture company Ikea has donated €5.3 million. British Prime Minister David Cameron has written to 27 European leaders urging them to “step up” their donations. The Labour Party has

demanded that countries not meeting their responsibilities be named. The UK has already donated €157 million to help fight Ebola, which has so far killed more than 4,500 people, mainly in West Africa.

Three UK airports sold SOUTHAMPTON, Glasgow and Aberdeen airports have been sold to a joint Spanish-Australian consortium for just over £1 billion (€1.25 billion). The consortium, formed by Ferrovial in Spain and Australia-based Macquarie, agreed the deal with owners Heathrow Airport Holdings. The sale is expected to be closed by January of next year. It is understood that the three airports will continue to be managed locally, but will benefit from the joint ownership of Ferrovial and Macquarie.

“Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports and their people have been part of our company for a long time,” said Heathrow chief executive John Holland-Kaye. “They are great airports and we are proud of their achievements. We wish the new owners and our airport colleagues every success and are confident the airports will continue to flourish.” Glasgow airport carries around 7.4 million passengers each year, while Aberdeen carries 3.4 million and Southampton 1.7 million.

Chopper drama A MILITARY helicopter was forced to land in Huercal de Almeria because of a fault. It was taking part in NATO manoeuvres at El Perdigal beach, and was on its way to the legion base in Viator when it developed a fault in the motor. It landed safely in a depopulated area of Huercal de Almeria. Mechanics worked for several hours before the repairs were complete and the helicopter continued its journey.

FARMERS in Laujar have said there are few farmers and winemakers who don’t dedicate a patch of their land to growing pumpkins. With this in mind, pumpkin has become a large part of the local diet with many recipes being passed through the generations. This year, the autumn festival has a section devoted to the vegetable. Visitors to the festival will be able to enjoy pumpkin dishes, giant pumpkin competitions, children’s

workshops, cookery master classes and restaurants offering various dishes. A prize fund of €300 has been set aside for the largest pumpkin. In 2013, an 86-kilo pumpkin won the first prize. The Pumpkin, Hunting and Wine festival runs from today, October 23, to Sunday 26 with a craft fair. The festival ends with a walk where people can forage for chanterelle and Monterey mushrooms, as well as other wild autumn fruits and vegetables.

Dressing to kill is essential for business I WINCED as our order was taken. Although hardly the epitome of sartorial elegance, I was far better dressed than was our ‘dumb’ waiter. His jeans fell far short of those worn by metro-man, I doubt his teeshirt was fresh and a shave might have helped improve his appearance. Frankly, he looked like a refugee from a Venetian circus. Uniforms and tunics are an essential part of working life. Our attitude towards others mirrors their attire. A very ordinary person you wouldn’t look twice at in the street creates a favourable impression when in overalls, uniform or nurse’s tunic. A uniform or tunic conveys authority, competence and professionalism. It sends the right signals. The difference that properlyattired, table-serving staff makes is remarkable. It has a marked effect on

customers’ attitudes and increases profitability. Shabbily-dressed staff have little choice but to sell on a price that reflects their dress code: cheap. Might I suggest to business owners that they insist on a proper dress code as a condition of engagement. Staff dressed appropriately build customer confidence and increase profitability. It has a bonus effect; staff feel better about themselves and they perform more professionally. Personal appearance of staff is essential. It is the business owner who is responsible for the appearance of his staff and those he decides to employ.

FOR many women these days, a personal ambition to excel in the workplace, alongside perhaps a desire to start a family, has for a long time presented a complicated maze of decisions and lack of possibilities. It can be difficult to advance along a chosen career path if a mother suddenly has to take time off to look after children. And on top of that, what also makes it difficult for a woman to be successful is that it’s not unusual for bosses to promote and hire male colleagues over female ones, because they believe that the woman might one day become pregnant and need leave. Such lines of thinking, which are alive

STARTING A FAMILY: A complicated decision for working women. and kicking in today’s ‘modern society’, leave women really struggling to prove that they are dedicated to their job and worth promoting. So much so, that some women even put off babies forever, or until they are satisfied that they have had enough of a career.

Two high-technology companies in America, however, have caused a stir this week since announcing another ‘benefit’ alongside yearly bonuses and education reimbursements. Facebook and Apple are going to offer female staff the option of freezing their eggs. A

typical round of egg-freezing costs about €8,000, with €400 or more in fees each year for storage. And the tech giants are willing to pay for it all. Obviously the new health benefits have raised a few eyebrows, with many speculating that the measures are a way of encouraging female staff not to start a family and just work around the clock. Plus, leaving motherhood till later is more complicated for all women. For women who are not ready to have a baby, the new measure is fantastic, but if Apple and Facebook really want to encourage motherhood, then why not introduce a plan that allows men to take an extended paternity leave so that they can also look after the children? Share the responsibility, not just force women into making a difficult decision. The technology world is a maledominated industry and both Facebook and Apple have recently released statistics showing that at least 70 per cent of their workforce is male, so it seems this surprising new ‘benefit’ is in order to try and retain more female staff.

The law specifies that votes at the AGM shall be by personal attendance or by proxy. If any member of the community chooses to impugn the results of the internet vote, he will surely win his case in court. One way around this might be for those present at the meeting to vote to accept the results of the internet vote as valid. If no member challenges this procedure, then the decisions should be valid. If you can assemble enough votes, you may be able to overturn the president’s decision. One other point: Such a big change should be properly voted for by the members at the AGM

Back in May or June I priced the cost of moving three items of furniture from Spain to UK. I telephoned various removal companies and eventually obtained two prices of €150 and €186. I decided on the cheapest at €150 but when I rang to arrange the pick-up, I was told the price was now €245. When I asked why, the lady I spoke to made excuses about the cost of petrol and the distance to travel. She said I was being ignorant, which I was not, so I set the phone down. As I had not kept the name of the second-cheapest company, I got my wife to deal with this person and had to pay the €245. My purpose in writing is to advise any person moving goods to Spain from the UK or from the UK to Spain to ensure that they get any quote in writing, as in this case the company had no scruples in changing their original quote. Human errors NOT being a medical expert, I am the last person to know whether Spain’s Ministry of Health dealt with the country’s first Ebola patient in a responsible and efficient manner. A civilised war? LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

OUND myself once more engrossed in the excellent TV presentation of the ‘World at War, in Colour’ series, which is being repeated on ITV. One thing that has struck me is how much more ‘civilised’ war was in those, not-so-far-off days. Rows of captured prisoners, from both sides, being marched off, some even smiling. Obviously not sure of their ultimate fate, but certainly safe in the knowledge that their heads would not be removed and used as footballs, and they would not be tortured and crucified with their eyes gouged out. How different to the lines of bowed prisoners shuffling to exactly this form of demise at the hands of the ISIS barbarians. No wonder these unfortunate men and women are fighting them to the death with such ferocity - wouldn’t you? The governments of the world, including Saudi Arabia, who initially financed

these monsters, must pour all their resources into these areas until these Satanists are crushed and broken, forever. I did find myself particularly interested in the desert fighting segments of the WW2 series. My father drove a tank under the command of Montgomery in North Africa. I did wonder as I watched the tanks rumbling through the dust-filled, sunseared terrain, whether one of them contained my courageous father. All those who fought in this conflict were heroes, fighting for the people and the preservation of the country they loved. How proud and relieved the survivors (my Dad one of them, TG) must have felt that when they once again set foot back onto British soil which, although war-ravaged, was still a place of democracy and free speech. What a waste! Thanks to Blair and his mercenary method of importing votes, the country these brave men and women plus many of their ancestors fought for, is now descending into a country overrun with spongers, illegal immigrants and no-go areas, A place where people are frightened to speak out for fear of being labelled ‘racist’

(whatever that actually means!). And monuments of pride and beauty being used as shelters for dossers and beggars, determined to suck as much as possible from a country to which they have contributed absolutely zilch. The graves of our heroes must be possibly vibrating to the spinning bodies they contain at the wanton waste of their precious sacrifices. I now see that Lord knows how many millions are being spent in an effort to make the Health Service more easily accessible to illegal immigrants. Makes you almost lose the will to live, dunnit!? THE Second World War almost erupted again but for the wisdom of keeping silent! I had been feeling quite chuffed with myself about calming passionate political hearts and allowing nature to take its timely course of cures. The Second World War was never mentioned again almost anywhere or any time on the beach. The world lived in harmony and I continued beholding my own ignorant bliss of knowing John Wayne and the American marines had really won it all. Well, but for the timely interjection of another wellspoken Englishman who told me it wasn’t quite so. “In fact, my dear boy, I thought you were better educated than that.” Double slap in the face and hammer blow to my head putdown. I then decided to educate myself more than Hollywood films and find out what truly

G LOOKIN BACK IN R MOJACA MOJACAR: Walls have ears? happened. That was a three-year course which became a fascinating learning experience. Almost every household in the world had at least one book about the war that I could borrow. The major documentaries I had to buy in

Charing Cross Road or Foyles. I amassed a huge library on the subject and became so acquainted that when I did speak to newcomers concerning the war, I could tell them their troop movements, victories and problems along the way. I

became more than just a barroom expert but actually acquired some knowledge on the topic, which naturally made me feel even more of a fool when I learned how the English had suffered, rationed and gone without to stop Hitler’s blitzkrieg. Battles led to further studies of the generals and circumstances wherein victory often hung on a twist of circumstance. Then, late one night while lying next to my purring wife, I read a passage in John Toland’s book about Hitler that mentioned Hitler could be nice to Jews if they would support his Aryan virtues. For instance, the Ball brothers who captained and played on the gold medal championship hockey team in the Winter Olympics were Jews! And one was none other than my tennis buddy Gerry, who had helped me put

the lid on the entire Second World War affair. That dumbfounded me. As I read the passage over and over I decided I simply must wake my wife and instruct her regarding my newlyacquired information. To date, there had never been a time that I ever woke my wife from a sound sleep. Not knowing quite how, I rocked her gently and continued whispering that I had read something quite important. After she conjugated the matter, it became a near-death experience for me. I guess I had forgotten to tell her (as it wasn’t a thing of any importance) but that Sidney and Millie, the German’s English friends, were Jewish also. I am sure it would have been upsetting to each other for the four of them to learn how familiar and far apart they actually were. Silence can be wisdom, too. I was finally learning - mucho!

EATING a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil could help reverse symptoms which can lead to heart disease. Whilst the Mediterranean diet has long since been praised for its healthy properties and benefits, a new study found people who followed a diet of fruit, vegetables, fish and wholegrains, with either added olive oil or nuts, reduced their obesity and blood glucose levels, which helps reduce heart disease. Following a diet classed as ‘low fat’ did not have the same effect. The Spanish researchers studied nearly 5,800 men and women aged from 55 to 80 who were at risk of heart disease for nearly five years, with participants divided into three groups. One group ate a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil. The second ate a Mediterranean diet with added nuts, and a third group ate a lowfat diet.

Autumn tree planting Selecting trees Look out for trees with a good rootball. Also look for a good basic 360 degree framework of branches. There may only be four at this stage but you don’t want them all leaning one way; this can result in a lopsided mature tree. Finally, buy a tree with a trunk that looks in balance to the embryo head of branches. Avoid trees that show signs of damage or that have not been weeded or watered for weeks. Watch out for split bark that could allow beetles and fungi to enter. How to plant If you have rich loamy soil, dig a hole as deep and wide as the rootball of the tree. Fill the hole with water and let it drain away. Clean out any soil that has fallen to the bottom of the hole and then slide the rootball carefully into the hole.

Now knock in a stake two thirds the height of the trunk and secure the tree with a non-rubbing tie. If you have a poor, heavy clay or light sandy soil, dig a hole two or three times the depth and width of the rootball. Fill the hole with water and let it drain. Then line the bottom of the hole with well-rotted compost or a 1:3 mix of well-rotted manure and soil, firming the infill as you go. Fill until the rootball sits in the hole with the top earth at the level of the surrounding soil. This is especially important if you have purchased a grafted tree. Knock in a stake and then place the tree in the hole and secure to the post so that it is supported while you infill the hole. Infill the hole with the same material used to line the base. Firm layer by layer until the soil is just above the surrounding soil to allow for the inevitable sinking after watering in the tree. In both cases it helps trees to survive first and second year drought periods if you mix some TerraCottem into the soil at the bottom of the hole. Behaviour problems in dogs THE biggest reason for pet euthanasia is dog behaviour. Is it incurable disease? Injury? The truth is more companion animals are euthanised for behaviour problems than for any other reason. Some animals are euthanised as they are aggressive and dangerous, but many are euthanised for behaviour problems that could have been avoided. My main goal is to raise awareness among dog owners in order to prevent behaviour problems. One of the biggest problems I see is that people underestimate how much time caring for a dog requires. Many dogs do not have all of their needs met, and many are under-exercised. Unfortunately, since crate training became popular, the crate has sometimes been used as a place to stow the dog rather than being used as the housebreaking tool it was meant to be. Many dogs spend far too much time in their crates. Another problem people have with dogs is a basic lack of manners.

PREVENT PROBLEMS: Enrol in a training class. Because they have not been taught manners, many dogs engage in undesirable activities, such as jumping up on people and not coming when called. When people take the time to educate themselves about the needs of their pet, behaviour issues such as these can be prevented. Unfortunately, owners often assume the dog should

somehow be aware of basic rules of behaviour without being taught. If bad behaviour continues for an extended period of time, pet owners sometimes attribute very human characteristics to the dog, as if the pet is engaging in the unwanted activity on purpose. However, their pet is not defecating in the house or digging up the garden in order to exact some sort of retribution. One of the best ways to avoid behaviour problems before they start is to enrol in a dog training class early, ideally when the dog is a young puppy. These classes not only teach the dog but most important teach you many things you are not aware of. If you have a dog that has a behaviour problem or you would like to enrol your pet in a training class, contact your local veterinarian.

As this series of articles is called ‘Outlook replacements’ I think that we should look at Microsoft’s replacement for Outlook called ‘Live Mail’ from the pack ‘Live Essentials.’ I know that this week should be about how to filter out those pesky unwanted emails but we need a good email client to create these filters in. So today I will walk you through installing and setting up ‘Live.’ Open up your browser and type into Google ‘Windows Live email client’ and open the link ‘http://windows.microsoft.com/enus/windows-live/essentials-other.’ The stub program is tiny (1.2Mb) but is there to help install the other programs in the ‘Live Essentials’ pack. Run the program (it’s called WLSETUP). Un-tick every box except ‘mail.’ Then click in the ‘Install’ button and when asked if you want ‘Bing’ or MSN as your start page, you must choose! But most people don’t want their home page changed so un-tick the option and click

You are asked for a Windows ID or encouraged to sign up for one (which means having an outlook email account whether you want one or not) - I chose ‘NOT’ and clicked on cancel and to my surprise the program was there ready to go! ‘Live’ needed an email account, password and display name so I used my trevalboxcc@gmail.com account, my password and the name ‘Trev@AlboxCC’ (didn’t say it was witty :-) ) Ignoring the tick box that suggested manual installation I clicked on ‘Next’ but still had to manually find and put in the server details. Finally!!!!!!! got it up and running! More next week as I’m out of space (again).

Albox bike thieves arrested by police OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested two men from Albox for bicycle theft. The 20-year-old Albox residents, AMNR and DJML, were arrested after stealing a bicycle from outside a cafe in the town. The victim had been out cycling with a friend and stopped off for some refreshments. The stolen bike had a value of €3,000 and was used by AMNR to escape on.

When the victim’s friend saw this, he jumped on his own bike in pursuit. However, AMNR threw the bike down an embankment and pushed the victim’s friend causing minor injuries. The damage to the thrown bike has been estimated at approximately €1,000. When the Guardia Civil officers located and arrested the two

men, they discovered the thieves had already amassed 17 arrests for similar crimes so far in 2014. One of the recent arrests included the theft of a tractor from a farm in the region of Alto Almanzora. This theft caused damage to a retaining wall, which in turn caused an accident with a passing driver who required medical treatment.

Life and courage an inspiration to us all IT was with sadness that we heard Lynda Bellingham had died after a long fight with cancer. The press release said she died peacefully in her husband’s arms, and for that we can be grateful. Lynda was given an OBE for her work with charities, and here in Spain she was Patron of Samaritans in Spain for several years. She began as Patron almost at the inception of Samaritans in Spain when it began as Costa Blanca Samaritans. She remained as Patron until just a few years ago when her work commitments became overwhelming and she felt she could no longer give the time she felt the organisation deserved. She became Patron

of the Samaritans in Spain because, as she said, it offered a listening ear to people when they really needed it. Lynda’s own personal courage was manifest in her determined fight against cancer, dealing with the chemotherapy that was, as she said, so strong her body was protesting. Her personal decision to end the therapy in November and to hopefully have one last Christmas with her family was preempted by her sudden death. But even through all the pain, Lynda took time out to pre-record a farewell appearance on Loose Women where she told the world to grasp everything, to not be afraid and to enjoy all we can

from our lives. What a profound message to take into our lives. Lynda had this courage, but for some that courage eludes them and they need support. Some find it in family and friends, others in religion or work, but for a few these are not an option. If you feel in this position it would be a fitting tribute to Lynda and her courage, as well as a courageous thing for you to do for yourself to contact the Samaritans in Spain on 902 88 35 35. AM intrigued by a woman friend. I am mystified by trying to figure out how she ticks and why. Doubtless most men will nod their heads and mutter: “Been there, mate.” Not so fast! Here we have a perfectly unremarkable woman yet her sole ambition, from the moment she was born, was to spend as much of her life as possible on the sea or in it. Her single-mindedness brought her a life of underwater exploration in the most exotic locations in the world. There does not seem to be any plausible explanation for such a phenomenon. It is easier to dismiss compulsion than figure out a reason for it. She is hardly alone in an obsession that excludes all else. Throughout history, some men and women, for no apparent reason, become fixated by an obsessional pursuit of one kind or another. All

To give such matters thought is whimsical and best left to deep thinkers. Interestingly, most great composers were adamant that they had been singled out by God to do his work. Certainly, Beethoven was born to a chorister father but as a musician he was far from alone in a time and country where a career in music was perfectly routine. To a condescending prince, arguably the world’s greatest composer, said:

“What you are, you are by accident of birth: what I am, I am by myself. There are and there will be a thousand princes. There is only one Beethoven.” Leaving aside the single-minded pursuit of wealth, which in most cases is simply a matter of theft by other means, education has little bearing on the kind of human achievement that enriches our lives. The chattering and political classes benefit from the best education money can buy yet in life tend to be under-achieving parasitical dullards.

On the other hand, there are those who, despite disadvantages that make most of us shudder, accomplish much that takes our breath away. Whatever field of human achievement we examine, be it music, art, theatre, creativity, invention, manufacturing, the originator was rarely driven by the pursuit of wealth. Intriguingly, with few exceptions, the men and women who bestowed their timeless gifts on the human race were born into poverty and in most cases died destitute. Other than in book form there could never be space enough to list the names, let alone the achievements, of such outstanding personalities. In all fields of creativity, art, music in its myriad forms, exploration, science, sport; wherever we look, we find greatness thrust upon the shoulders of men and women whose family or personal backgrounds are singularly unremarkable. I can only ruminate as to the reasons why. I do so over a glass of wine. However, I am still looking for an answer. If you have it, write it down on a postcard. I look forward to giving it my attention.

Perfect golfing weather THE 19th Hole Golf Society played an Individual Stableford at Valle del Este. Weather was about perfect for golf and the course is beginning to take shape after all the floods and work being done. Reno Palagano playing a rare round with the 19th hole showed his knowledge of what is now his home course by taking second spot with 34 points whilst Terry Caddick took third place with 31 points, but Nick Pogson led the way with 36 points. Nearest the Pins were won by Syd Walker, Brian Lowden and Reno Palagano. The 19th Hole G/S plays weekly games at various courses in the area, with the home course, played fortnightly, being Aguilon.
