People power wins oil battle THE Spanish Government opposes prospecting for oil off Nerja and Torrox. The Agriculture, Food and Environment Ministry is against exploring for oil in the Alboran Sea, specifically off the coast of Nerja and Torrox, in Malaga Province, and other coastal areas in Granada, it said in a statement. Following several protests organised by local citizens, Nerja and Torrox also rejected the proposal. Prospecting for oil would be detrimental to tourism and the environment in the area, said the councils.
As stated in an environmental impact report, the project does not comply with environmental protection requirements. This is in
fact the reason why Madrid is not supporting the idea. The government’s environmental statement is now to be sent to the
Promoting competitiveness in wine-making sector THE wine-making sector in Malaga Province is to benefit from a competitiveness-promoting project. A joint project launched by the Provincial Council of Malaga and the Industrial Organisation School – known as the Plan for Innovation and Tourism Excellence in Costa del Sol – seeks to improve the winemaking sector in the province by encouraging competitiveness in 25 smalland medium-sized companies.
The project aims at raising awareness about the importance of innovation, marketing tools and communication to adapt products to consumers’ needs and includes a strategy to improve the positioning of wine sector products in the marketplace. The initiative is expected to benefit small- and medium-sized companies as it will improve their products’ visibility, among other things.

Specifically the EU court stated that Spain has a discriminatory inheritance and Gift tax, that makes non-residents pay higher inheritance taxes than residents or Spanish citizens. This breaks Articles 21 and 63 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and Articles 28 and 40 of the European Economic Area rules. Present Spanish inheritance tax rules Spanish law establishes precisely how to calculate the tax base and the assets to be taxed. Additionally the law empowers autonomous communities to apply tax rebates and discounts. As a result Spanish inheritance and gift tax varies dramatically depending on the region where the assets are located, the place of residence of the heirs and the place of residence of the deceased. Spanish inheritance law is regulated both at the state and at the autonomous region levels and differentiates between the heirs who are fiscal residents in Spain and those who are not. In this context regional law applies only

Additionally he will benefit from extensive tax
rebates from the autonomous communities, radically decreasing the taxation level (making in some cases the inheritance tax free). If the heir is not a fiscal resident in Spain he will have to pay Spanish inheritance tax only on
assets located in Spain. However, contrary to autonomous communities’ laws, state legislation does not award extensive tax benefits leading to a higher taxation for non-residents. In the future Spain will have to change its laws in order to
harmonize inheritance and gift tax for residents and nonresidents. Filing a claim The ruling from the EU will allow non-residents to claim back the difference between the inheritance tax they paid according to state law and the applicable autonomous community law. Since there is a limitation period after which actions cannot be taken, you can file a claim only if you paid the inheritance tax less than four years ago. Our recommendation is to contact a lawyer specialised in taxation and claim back the difference. You will need to provide the inheritance deeds, the taxes paid, and a bank certificate of your account; it may take some time before the tax is returned to your bank account, but it will be worth the effort.

Torrox beaches get Q for Quality award TWO Torrox beaches have been awarded the Q for Quality standard. The Spanish Tourism Quality Institute (ICTE) awarded the Q for Quality to Playa Ferrara and Playa El Morche in Torrox. “This is excellent news for the municipality and especially for the tourism sector, since
this award is a symbol of the quality of our beaches and of the tourism services we provide,” said Tourism and Beaches Councillor Mari Nieves Ramirez, adding that the Q for Quality is testament to the quality of the Spanish tourism sector and it represents prestige, distinction,
reliability and promotion. The thorough work carried out by the council with the counsel of AMACVA, Spanish acronym for the Enviroment and Quality of Life Association in Axarquia, has allowed the town to pass the audits conducted by ICTE before awarding the Q for Quality. Nerja celebrates annual fair THE traditional Nerja fair was a resounding success. Held between Thursday October 9 and Monday October 13, the festivities were kicked off by this year’s town criers Calle Nueva Big Band, made up of accomplished local musicians, and included concerts by Ecos del Rocio, India Martinez and Loquillo y su banda and a parade float on Sunday. All fair rides were only half-price on Monday October 12, when Spain celebrated its National Day. The fact that the fair coincided with the long weekend of Puente del Pilar prompted numerous tourists to pay a visit to the town and enjoy the festivities. For fifth year in a row, most of the events took place at the Los Huertos de Carabeo fairground, Plaza Tutti-Frutti and Calle Antonio Millon.

Caught with lots of cash POLICE have detained two Colombian nationals carrying thousands of euros in cash. Municipal Police officers placed two Colombian nationals under arrest after they were caught red-handed carrying €45,000 in cash, an undisclosed amount of casino tokens and a metal bar of what may turn out to be gold. The arrest took place when the officers on patrol in Madrid pulled over a car because it lacked the mandatory ITV sticker on the windscreen. After asking the occupants to produce their identity documents, the Colombians said they did not have them because they were foreigners. The police became highly suspicious because the men got nervous, which prompted them to search the vehicle, finding a large amount of €50 and €500 bills as well as tokens from a Madrid casino and a gold-coloured bar.

Mass murdering acid killer gets 127-year jail sentence A NURSING home security guard has been jailed for more than 127 years for the murder of 11 elderly men and women. The Supreme Court upheld a 127-and-a-half-year prison sentence for the security guard of a nursing home in Olot, Girona, convicted of murdering
11 residents of the home between 2009 and 2010, using caustic acid, psychotropic drugs and other substances. The court dismissed the appeal lodged by the defendant, Joan Vila, in which he maintained there was not enough proof that the deaths of eight of the 11 men
and women had been brought about by high doses of the substances. While being questioned by police, the examining magistrate and during the trial, the man had admitted giving the substances to the victims. According to the Supreme

Spain to send troops to Iraq to take part in a training mission SPAIN is to send troops to Iraq on a training mission. The Spanish Government decided on Friday (October 10) to send approximately 300 troops to Iraq on a sevenor eight-week training mission, as part of their support to the US-led international coalition against jihadist extremism. The announcement was made
by Defence Minister Pedro Morenes after a meeting of the Cabinet. The decision is now to be submitted to Parliament for approval. The Spanish Government could also expand the capacity of Spanish airbases to support the needs of the United States Central Command, a decision arising from an
agreement signed between Spain and the United States and that does not require the approval of Parliament. The troops are to train the Iraqi military on how to handle and deactivate explosive devices as well as on special operations. Out of the 300 troops to be sent, 69 will provide security, 60 will act as trainers in three different
teams, 10 will be part of the military’s command, while the rest will support training and security tasks. Minister Morenes said, however, that the size of the Spanish contingent could vary and that he is
to meet his American counterpart in Tampa, Florida, next week to specify what Spain’s contribution will be. “The efforts (being made) in Iraq are not only aimed at stopping the advance of the Islamic

This represents roughly 36 per cent of the population. However, the percentage could be even higher – 95 per cent – if World Health Organisation (WHO) standards are taken into consideration, warned Ecologistas en Accion, a confederation of more than 300 Spanish ecological groups, in its annual air quality report, which looked at data from 2013. According to international health authorities, the number of premature deaths in Spain total 20,000 a year as a result of complications resulting from air pollution. This high percentage is consistent with a study on air quality
carried out by the European Environment agency, according to which close to 90 per cent of the urban population in Europe is exposed to air pollutants considered by WHO to be detrimental to humans’ health, including nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, tropospheric ozone and particulate matter.

NURSES at Carlos III Hospital in Madrid are reportedly refusing to work with confirmed or suspected cases of the Ebola virus. According to them, the safety conditions are not adequate. “Some members of the staff have nullified their contracts to avoid entering rooms,” said Provincial Vice-Secretary of Nurses’ Union SAE Elvira Gonzalez. Several nurses and technicians have tendered their resignation and others have refused to provide treatment to patients under the current conditions, explained Gonzalez. Though the hospital does not force any staff member to enter a room if they refuse to do so, the truth is that a health professional is in theory obligated to provide care to anyone who is sick. As of right now, it is not completely clear if the protective suits and the protocols put in place are adequate, she said. Credit card reckoning… SPAIN’S tax authority denied knowledge of ‘opaque’ credit cards used by Caja Madrid and Bankia executives. After the credit card spending came to light, Pablo Abejas, former director general for Economic Affairs in Madrid’s regional government, came clean. While at Caja Madrid he used his card for €246,700 of personal spending, he admitted. He and 85 others at the bank, which later became Bankia, ran up an untaxed €15.5 million between 2003 and 2012. The cards were a source of untaxed income and both Hacienda and the Bank of Spain were aware of the situation, Abejas
maintained. Beneficiaries of the cards included Rodrigo Rato, a former Cabinet minister who headed IMF between 2004 and 2007. He became Bankia president in 2010, remaining until 2012 when the bank needed Spain’s biggest-ever bailout of €19 billion of taxpayers’ money. Rato has repaid all he spent but many fellow executives insisted they were assured everything was above board. No matter what you think about our furry little friends, who tend to shred sofas and poo on public streets, these little creatures have the potential to pull in the big bucks. They seem to melt the heart of even the toughest of folk. Just the other day I

happened to pass by a new funeral home close to my neighbourhood. I was initially taken aback by how small the coffin in the window was and thought it was in pretty bad taste to display a child’s casket in such a public way. But it wasn’t small because it was for a child it was for an animal. Pet owners nowadays are so devoted to their pets that they apparently fork out a lot of money to bury them too!
Oversized kitten eyes and chunky puppy paws are attributes that have massive earning potential. And pet owners like you and me can climb aboard the gravy train as more and more companies, apart from Andrex loo roll, are now capitalising on the emotional value of animals. It does seem to help, however, if the animal is exceptional in some way. Take Grumpy Cat. This cranky-looking pet suffers from feline dwarfism - a
condition that gives her a permanent frown - and people around the world have gone mad over her. So much so that she is now an internet sensation and has made her owners a lot of money by lending her face to branding as well as her own book deal. Animals are so much indemand nowadays for marketing and much more, that pet modelling agencies and pet agents actually exist. The old saying may go, “It’s a dog’s life.” More than suggesting that pets are the snoozy freeloaders in the family. But if a pet has some quirky or cute potential, remember that, that very same slacker may also have the power to pull their weight and even have a higher earning potential than its owner.

Dare to speak out to ensure justice is done RECENTLY we were asked to assist a neighbour to take his animal to the vet as it had been attacked by a local youth and his German shepherd. The youth had beaten and kicked the little three or four kilo dog and encouraged his own dog to attack it for no apparent reason. Our 80-year-old neighbour begged the youth to stop but was answered with verbal abuse. Following the visit to the vet the little dog died from his injuries. The reason for this letter is to encourage people to report abuse to animals or other human beings and not be afraid to do so. Those responsible for terrible acts of violence and cruelty need to be brought to justice and pressure needs to be applied to the authorities to ensure justice is done. The vet, Juan Manuel Taboada of Veravet in Vera, who gave his time freely and assisted the elderly neighbour to denounce the youth, deserves our support for his actions. His main concern is to stamp out cruelty by raising public awareness and he is passionate about this cause. The elderly man could not have achieved this ‘denuncia’ without the support of the vet. Please be proactive if you witness acts of cruelty. Don’t turn away: denounce and help to stop this evil! Sheila Anderson, Cuevas del Almanzora (Almeria)
Pooling ideas I SPEND about five months of the year in Spain. We live in a community and there are three pools. The issue of enclosure has been going back and forth for ages and a Euro Weekly News article about pool safety mentions that it is Spanish law to enclose community pools. Mr Wood says that “pampered western cultures have to cut back on quality of life.” That, in my humble opinion, is a very general outlook which indicates he has no idea that there are many UK pensioners living on or below the poverty level who deserve as much assistance as those he would seek to help elsewhere in the world. Numerous UK pensioners who will die alone, cold and hungry this winter won’t be able to follow Mr Wood’s edict: “We shall have to tighten our belts for a long time yet.” I'm not blind to the suffering elsewhere in the world but the UK donates a fair bit in foreign aid and, at the end of the day, charity should begin at home. I will break with tradition by sharing with you my hospital experience, not to complain but to praise. He tells us what we all need to do to improve life for those elsewhere in the world but there are many less fortunate than he who do not enjoy a particularly good quality of life. Volume lowered WE are used to testy Brits who grumble at the slightest whisper that disturbs their sepulchral peace, but I see that the Spanish are taking lessons from them. I was gobsmacked by Deirdre Baxter’s letter praising the fine slapped on Parcheesi players who incensed their neighbours in central Malaga by playing until 2am. Needless to say, I was not remotely surprised by Deirdre Baxter’s reaction which is what I’d expect from a certain type of fellow-Brit. This was once proudly proclaimed the noisiest country in the world after Japan. Anyone who lives in Spain knows you must take the rough with the smooth and the peace with the racket. People here are crazy drivers when it rains but drivers in Granada are the worst I have ever seen. RECENT questionnaire asked 2,000 adults aged 18 to 65 what things needed to be done ‘before you die.’ The 50 top answers ranged from ‘Visit at least 25 different countries,’ ‘Find true love,’ ‘Have a one-night stand’ (both, presumably, not at the same time!) to ‘Try an adrenalinepacked activity such as sky-diving.’ One instruction, though (‘Spend time with children, even if they aren’t yours’) could have completely unforeseen results. Think Operation Yewtree! Like leading you to doing time, and/or getting placed on a register - if the children aren’t yours (and maybe even if they are!). Facetious though it sounds, it’s nonetheless true that you mustn’t enjoy children’s company nowadays. What a sad reflection of our times… Another response urges us to: ‘Treat each day like it’s your last.’ Does this mean you spend the latter part of each day lying

motionless on a bed? An alternative way of treating each day like your last would be, of course, never going to work. Or undertaking any of the recommendations. And splashing all your cash on one final shopping trip. But what a daft, contradictory list! If you did some things (those related to reckless spending, for example), you couldn’t do others (leave bequests to your family). Basically, all it amounts to is a recipe for selfish, anti-social, hedonistic/narcissistic behaviour.
I’d hate to know someone who’s done everything on the list. (‘Stop worrying about money’; ‘Use money on experiences rather than saving for a rainy day’; ‘Have an allnight drinking session’; ‘Date someone exciting but completely wrong for you,’ ‘Snog a stranger’ and so on.) I don’t think that’s what a fulfilling life’s all about, do you? In fact, we all know some well-off, pleasure-seeking types - and they’re invariably the self-centred pub bores. They often have difficulty controlling their weight, too. One of the drawbacks of the ‘me, me, me’ approach to life - and no doubt why the
‘Lose a stone’ instruction was also included. What happened to moderation, thoughtfulness and, umm, common sense? Well, if you’ve counted them all up and there’s nothing left to do on the list, you must have been having a whale of a time! So what now? New legal warning on heirship rules for British owners of Spanish property Take action now to ensure your overseas property goes to your loved ones, says Stone King’s Dan Harris

OR decades Brits abroad have been immune to Spanish forced heirship rules that determine who gets someone’s property when they pass away. That’s because Spain has allowed the law of a person’s nationality to govern the devolution of their property. But this is all set to change in 2015 when attempts to simplify succession law across Europe come into effect. From August 17 next year a person’s ‘habitual residence’ and not their nationality will determine who gets what when they die. The impact on affected families who don’t take the appropriate action could be devastating. The changes will mean that the devolution of the property of foreigners (including Brits) living in Spain will be subject to that country’s domestic law, not British law.

In most civil law jurisdictions like Spain an individual’s property is subject to forced-heirship provisions. This means that the legal system of the state where the property is situated decides who receives your property
when you die. Put simply, your will is likely to be (at least partly) ineffective if it conflicts with forced-heirship rules. Instead your children, including estranged children and children from previous relationships, could inherit your property on your death ahead of your spouse, regardless of your wishes. The good news is that the new regulation contains provisions that have the potential to protect British owners of Spanish property. After August 17, any British national who has property in Spain - and who has taken appropriate action before their death - can avoid the default position of the law of their habitual residence governing the devolution of their estate by instead making a formal election for the law of their nationality to apply.
The ‘appropriate action’ is to make a nomination in a will which is valid in the state where the property is situated, stating which law will apply to your property. As Spain has adopted the provisions of the 1961 Hague Convention on testamentary dispositions, your English will is as valid in Spain as a Spanish will, and arguably, as English law is being applied, an English will may be more appropriate. The nomination can and should be done now to avoid problems should you lose the mental capacity to make a new will before August 17 or forget to do so. VER the years I thought I had become hardened to images of atrocities and man’s inhumanity to man. Not so. The email I received this week contained subject matter that turned my stomach, almost to the point of heaving up lunch. The photos depicted the sub-human members of the so-called ISIS carrying out unbelievable acts on the victims of their evil war on humanity. Please don’t refer to these people as animals. No member of the animal kingdom would commit such barbarous acts on one of its own kind. If you can’t abide jottings, descriptive of bloodthirsty cruelty, turn away now. The email pics depicted rows of severed heads on railings,
CONDEMNATION: Muslims protest against ISIS. with grinning ISIS members posing for gruesome selfies in front of the horrific spectacle. Kneeling men, actually in the act of being beheaded by knife-wielding lunatics. Rows and rows of men being executed with gunshots to the back of the head. Crucified, beheaded men, with their eye-
gouged heads slung around their waists on pieces of string. Need I go on? These people, (and I use the term with great reluctance) really must be stopped, by whatever means lie at the civilised world’s disposal. Anything less than our total combined commitment to their
annihilation is completely unacceptable. If we have to put boots on the ground, so be it. If we allow this bunch of Satanists to continue, we are complicit in throwing humanity back to the Dark Ages. Notwithstanding any disillusioned individual that goes to join their ranks, thereby condoning their actions. Anyone who returns to their country after taking part in this despicable conflict, deserve nothing more than heavy incarceration for the rest of their natural lives, and certainly no access to ‘human rights’ for the duration of their miserable existence. Any member of their families or friends seen to protect or assist them should suffer the same fate. There is NO excuse for this barbarism. It is just about as far from religion as you can possibly get. Believe me, when the Muslim leaders, including those with extreme views,
come out in condemnation of this outrageous bunch of barbarians, you can be assured that they really are an unprecedented force of evil that must be stopped - no matter what the cost. Those who have managed to peruse this blurb will remember that over two years ago I wrote that our esteemed party leaders should beware of the rise of UKIP in the political portals of power. Oh, how the ole boy was scoffed at and ridiculed for this ‘ludicrous’ opinion. What say you now, oh ye of little ‘Leaper’ faith? Time to be seen to be actually doing something, Dave, or in less than a year you could be sticking your head between yer legs and not only whistling your goodbyes to Number 10, but allowing the worst Labour party leader in history to be calling the tune.

An independence overdose WITH less than a month before the hypothetical date for Cataluña’s disallowed ballot on whether it wants independence, the Spanish outside the region are already weary. They are also baffled by the word-search of initials corresponding to pro-independence parties: CiU, ERC, ICV and CUP. As well as the two national parties, PP and PSOE, the Spanish are familiar only with CiU, the alliance of two centreright parties that governs Cataluña. The rest mean little, although they have grown used to ERC also because the leftwing republicans shore up CiU which lost its overall majority in the 2012 elections. The party was kind enough to do the same for the PSOE and Jose Montilla after the regional elections of 2006. The trouble with favours is having to repay them and at least losing the 2010 Catalan elections allowed the PSOE to get shot of ERC and the separatist demands of Oriol

Train crash avoided MARIANO RAJOY won the 2011 general election on the back of assurances that he would reverse the economic crisis. On paper it looks as though he is succeeding although the street has yet to perceive or enjoy the ‘trickle down’ effect. The figures are there, though, to be produced, proffered and paraded in this coming preelection year. Having nominally
done what he set out to do, Rajoy was never going to let himself be derailed by an issue that exercised few of the Spanish public apart from his own hard-core PP voters. That issue was reform of the 2010 Abortion Bill with the most recent opinion poll confirming that 52 per cent of PP voters were in favour of the existing law. The 38 per cent against it would vote for him anyway, so although usually immobile Rajoy isn’t for turning, he binned the reform. He got rid of over-ambitious Justice Minister Alberto
Ruiz-Gallardon, too. Double whammy.
Vested interests MIGUEL ARIAS DIAZ CAÑETE had a rough ride when questioned by the European Parliament prior to his appointment as Energy and Climate Change Commissioner. His assurances that he divested himself of his oil industry interests by putting them under his brother-in-law’s control sounded lame but only to be expected from a Spanish politician. Instead MEP Matthias Groote, put his finger on Diaz Cañete’s real
problem: “His record as a minister in Spain shows how little he implemented the measures which he now so strongly defends.” There’s the real conflict of interest.
‘It’s who you know...’ EXEMPLARY of Spain’s state lawyers to appeal against a businessman’s one-year suspended sentence for defrauding Hacienda of €187,881 in value-added IVA. He is now serving a two-year sentence, unlike many who swallow millions but still walk the streets because of their connections.

One in five Bikinis being Spaniards has blamed for skin chronic pain cancer
ONE person in every five has chronic pain with this problem being the main symptom of 42.8 per cent of patients who arrive at the Emergency Department of Spanish Hospitals. According to the Spanish Society of Pain (SED), chronic pain is considered by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a disease and, therefore, treatment should be a right with the problem significantly reducing the quality of life
of sufferers from their social to work life. According to the SED, 54.9 per cent of the population has suffered pain in recent months and, taking into account headaches, postoperative and cancer pain, this percentage rises to 61.5 per cent. Women, aged over 60 are the most affected, but 35 per cent of patients say they suffer throughout their life. The most common is lower back pain.

They say our bodies need to be in pitchblack to produce the right levels of melatonin which is involved in regulating the conversion of food and drink into energy. Light disrupts this process and
prevents food being burned off efficiently. Using a computer or smart phone at night can also lead to an increase in weight as a study between the blue light emitted by electronic devices found that it leads to an increase in hunger. In a separate study by researchers in the US, it was found that exposure to the light increases hunger levels for several hours and even increases hunger levels after eating a meal.

The cloud of cancer approached on a beautiful sunny day
This week The Euro Weekly News begins a regular column chronicling the journey – both emotional and physical – of a breast cancer sufferer. Expatriate Erica Russell Watson will take us with her and share her thoughts and experiences as she comes to terms with an illness she was only recently diagnosed with. It is one that affects more than one million women worldwide each year. Her story is unfortunately a common one in many homes around Spain and the world; a story of pain, disbelief, heartbreak, laughter, tears and spirit. Screening and early detection is essential in the fight against breast cancer and organisations around Spain stress that being diagnosed with breast cancer does not necessarily equal a death sentence. We hope that Erica’s story will strike a chord with readers and perhaps also inspire women to get screened at their nearest clinics in order to combat this disease; a disease that can devastate the lives of not only sufferers, but also their families and friends. But it is important to remember that there is hope, and many women have, with just the same courage and dignity shown by Erica, faced up to the illness and come through it. We wish Erica all the best, our thoughts are with her. By Erica Russell Watson My story so far: detection, diagnosis and plan of action to combat breast cancer. August 2, 2014: Yet another beautiful sunny day and I was looking forward to playing ‘padel’ when I noticed a strange sensation in my right breast and a thickening of the skin around the areola coupled with a slight discolouration and change in texture. I started to investigate, feeling my breast for abnormalities or lumps. I couldn’t find anything discernible and moved up into my right armpit when suddenly I felt a large hard lump. The lump did not hurt and as I didn’t have a temperature I was sure it wasn’t an infection. My alarm bells sounded so I went to Urgencias at the hospital (A&E). If I am honest I was fairly positive that the signs were not good and suspected breast cancer, not because I am a negative person but because I am a realistic person. Having done some initial research the signs were not consistent with more minor illnesses. Once in Urgencias I explained my findings and the doctor examined me. She could not find a lump in my breast, quite a large surface area to cover! But did feel the lump in my armpit and noted the strange skin texture. She referred me directly to the Breast Unit in VélezMálaga where I went for a scan and mammogram on August 12. The doctors didn’t like the look of what they saw and I was back in two days later for a biopsy. The biopsy was not dissimilar to spear fishing
27th. Being August in Spain, everyone was on holiday so I just had to wait. I was not expecting good news, it was just a feeling I had as I knew something wasn’t right; we all know our own bodies. This is an important point and one I will revisit later. Listen to your body and your instincts, no matter how qualified the people are around you, never be afraid to question medical staff. They are only human after all and you may spot something they might overlook. I sat in front of the doctor and waited for the news. He calmly reviewed the findings with me and confirmed I had Grade 2 cancer in both the sample taken from my breast and the one from my armpit-lymph node. My attention drifted slightly as I listened to an inordinate amount of information over the ensuing hour-and-a-half. I accepted the infor-mation and came away strangely calm. The main impression I had was that this wasn’t something to worry about and that there were a series of steps to go through. Firstly, surgery to remove the tumours and then depending on the results, chemotherapy and I just radio-therapy. I always cope knew better when I have a plan of that action. Missing parrot returns speaking a new language A MISSING parrot recently reunited with its owner picked up a totally different language on its journey. Nigel, the African Grey parrot went missing from his home in Torrance, California, for four years before being reunited with his loving owner Darren Chick, an expatriate living in the United States. After losing a bird herself and someone bringing in Nigel, an animal loving veterinarian was
determined to reunite the parrot with his owner. She was able to track Darren down and bring the duo back together. But one thing had changed significantly, the language that Nigel spoke was no longer English. Before going missing Nigel spoke English with a British accent; however, he came back four years later speaking Spanish! Owner Darren has no idea where the Spanish has come from but is glad to have him home, safe and well.

A BEHAVIOUR problem is really any behaviour shown by a dog that people find a problem! People vary in how much they tolerate different behaviours in their dogs, so what some people regard as a ‘problem’, others can be quite happy to live with. This means that behaviour problems can range from things like dogs jumping up to greet their owners as they return, to extreme forms of aggression, or behaviours that appear ‘hallucinatory’ such as snapping at flies that are not there. The term ‘behaviour problems’, therefore,
covers a wide range of issues from situations where dogs have not been trained how to behave in response to particular events, to behaviours which are linked to medical problems. As a general rule, if your dog shows obedience training problems like pulling on the lead or failing to come when called, then you should look for a reputable trainer to help you. However, if your dog shows behaviours such as aggression, withdrawal from or avoidance of particular sounds or events, excessive vocalisation or destruction when left alone, then you should seek help from
your vet, who will be able to refer you to somebody who specialises in clinical behaviour. A qualified behaviourist will be able to develop a tailored treatment programme to resolve both the behaviour and any underlying emotional distress. Why do I need to see a vet first? Behavioural changes can be an indication of a medical problem. There are a range of different conditions that can first present as an apparent ‘behaviour problems’ but which are in fact signs of disease. For example, neurological problems in the brain or spinal cord, hormonal disorders, inflammation of the bladder, or reduced functioning of the liver can all first become apparent as behavioural changes. Medical conditions can only be diagnosed by a vet.

Porsche Sport Driving School celebrates its 40th anniversary A SIMPLE driving workshop 40 years ago laid the foundation for today’s Porsche Sport Driving School. It was prompted by the premiere of the highpowered 911 Turbo at the Paris Motor Show in 1974. Even before sales got under way, Porsche engineers and dealers realised that practice was needed to drive the new top model at high speeds safely. What started as a workshop for a few car fans has now developed into the international Porsche Sport Driving School (PSDS) - with courses offered in 15 countries including Spain (Madrid and Barcelona). PSDS enables Porsche customers to improve their driving skills, step by step. The philosophy has not changed over the years: “You tell us your goal in

One of approximately 100 instructors worldwide is Carsten Dreses. The 43year-old steps back from a session to describe the objective: “We want to instil an instinctive feel for driving and with it the art of reading and understanding the car better. When drivers sense the harmony in their cars, they’re automatically more secure and also faster as a result.” He returns to shouting instructions to his drivers. Dreses knows what he’s talking about. A full-time development engineer for Porsche, he enters endurance races in his free time. Since 2004, he has been imparting the skills of safe and fast driving to eager students around 15 times a year. “It’s just as important now as it was 40 years ago not to concentrate on lifeless theory, but rather on driving pleasure,” says Dreses’s colleague, KlausPeter Krüger. An engineer, the 57-year-old Krüger joined Porsche in 1981 and
since 1991 has also been working part time as an instructor and supervisor for the Porsche Sport Driving School. After 23 years, he remains just as enthusiastic about the concept and the content of this special school. “It’s still a matter of teaching the right way to sit, steer, and brake,” he notes. “But with ABS, Porsche Stability Management [PSM], and other driver assistance systems in the background, cars now behave differently at their limits. We show the drivers the situations where the individual systems kick in to support them.” While the very first courses were based on the improvisational talent of the instructors, today they are clearly structured and organised and the content is conveyed in a more compact form. At the same time, there is a greater emphasis on driving pleasure. The courses can last from one to three days, depending on what customers select.
