British firm retained to promote Palma PALMA’S tourism promotion is going in a new direction. Two new PR firms are starting work this week to improve the image of the city as a tourist destination and, in particular, as an urban destination for weekend and offseason visits. La Fundació Turisme Palma de Mallorca 365 will pay €48,000 per year to each of the companies, one based in London and the other a German company, which will have direct contact with travel journalists in the UK and Germany to promote tourism from the home countries. Press trips for journalists and bloggers will be arranged to include visits to iconic cultural venues within Palma. Another task for the PR companies will be to respond and react to any information that could negatively affect the image of the municipality. Lotus UK will promote Palma in the UK. Established in 2007, the Spanish tourist office Turespaña is among its customers. KPRN Network will also work for Palma with offices in Frankfurt and Berlin. The company has 20 years of experience working with tourist destinations like Chile, Panama, Thailand and South Africa. Both companies must now submit their plans of action by early November.

Air controllers case to reopen

THE investigation into the 2010 air chaos across airports of the Balearic Islands is being reopened. The Courts have ordered the reopening of the inquiry into the problems generated in December 2010 by the sudden inactivity of 22 air traffic controllers during the wildcat strike that led to the suspension of air traffic control operations throughout the country with military controllers having to take over. The case was initially dropped as according to the judge there was no

evidence of a crime, but the Superior Court of Justice has now said the instruction was dismissed prematurely. Controllers are accused of a dereliction of duty after halting work, many calling in sick. Evidence is now wanted on the alleged psychological issues they were claiming left them unable to continue their work. The court said: “It is necessary to have forensic information about the credibility and scope of the manifestations and protests of those affected.�

THE average cost of rent for a 120 square metre apartment in the Balearic Islands is now €745 a month. According to the quarterly rental report by pisos.com this is a quarterly decline of 4.73 per cent, but renting on the Islands is still the third most expensive autonomy in Spain behind Madrid

(€996 per month) and the Basque Country (€893 per month). Prices of rental in Palma de Mallorca have risen by 5.03 per cent. The average apartment is 106 square metres in size, generating an income of €780 per month. Compared to September 2013, this is a rise of

7.69 per cent. This places it fourth in the ranking of expensive capitals which is topped by Madrid, where the average rent is €1,068. Nationally, across Spain, September rental prices were an average of €604 for a 105 square metre apartment, 0.09 per cent higher than September 2013.

Normally performed in August, this year there is a second chance to see what has been declared by Unesco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Held at the Basilica of Santa Maria, the play dates back to the 15th century and is a chanted drama that commemorates the Assumption of Mary. In even-numbered years there are extra ticketed performances on October 29 and 30, followed by free access on November 1. The play has lasted through to modern times despite the Council of Trento (1545-1563) banning

Ebola fears over woman who discharged herself THE woman with symptoms of Ebola who left hospital before tests could confirm or not whether she had the disease, has been located. The Nigerian woman, aged 39, entered Palma’s Espases hospital with symptoms consistent with Ebola and had recently travelled to

an area of low incidence of the disease in Africa. The Regional Health Department clarified that they had not enabled the protocol of Ebola, but had requested the strengthening of state security forces as a precaution to find the woman in

order to complete the medical tests. After being traced and taken back to the hospital, the Regional Ministry of Health confirmed that epidemiological evidence showed that Ebola was not present and she was clear of the disease.

Schools return Thieves arrested to old language THE Assembly of Teachers has reported that 25 education centres in the Balearic Islands have recovered this last week their previous language projects. It comes following the conflict over the new Integrated Language Processing law (TIL) and the judicial decision to suspend the law. The Assembly of Teachers said: “While the Department of Education continues its

misguided tactic to mislead and deceive families and society, schools are clearly setting about on the right strategy and returning to the situation sensibly in the way that prevailed in schools before the arrival of Jose Ramon Bauza and TIL.” Many schools have said they “do not need to change anything because they never approved the TIL.”

GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested an organised group, consisting of four men accused of the alleged crimes of conspiracy and theft from vehicles. At least 30 of their crimes occurred in Alcudia with thefts taking place during the last few weeks from car parks by the beaches of Bonaire and Muro. Surveillance was increased in the areas as a result. The thieves were caught red-handed with police recovering €200 in cash and various electronic equipment. The four detainees, of North African origin and residents of Inca, had a history of theft.

Brit’s body found floating in Ibiza harbour THE body of a British holidaymaker was found floating in the harbour of Sant Antoni in Ibiza. Fishermen found the man’s lifeless body floating in the sea. The body showed no signs of external violence with police divers removing the body from the ocean. The young man was identified by a friend he had been travelling with who said he had been missing for a few days. His body was taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine where the exact cause of death will be determined.

Burning issue TWO Catalans have been fined €900 each for burning a portrait of the former King Juan Carlos I. The incident happened during a pro independence protest before the abdication. While not condoning the act, which may well have been taken as being insulting to many Royalists, it was still something that should be covered by freedom of expression. Disrespectful? Yes, but why should that be illegal? Surely the courts have better things to occupy their time with than this. The Royal Family is capable of looking after itself.

Government is committed to ‘essential’ transparency BALEARIC President, Jose Ramon Bauza, has stressed his Government’s commitment to transparency in public administration. He said it was “imperative to meet the demands of today’s society and ensure quality of our democratic institutions.”

The president made the comments during his opening speech of the XXII Congress of Audit held in the Auditorium of Palma. Bauza pointed out that transparency is essential to restore the confidence of citizens in government and public action.

In a bid to offer clear governing, he said a website called Public Sector Finances, has been created which is permanently updated for citizen’s information, which he called “the greatest exercise in transparency ever done by a government of the Balearic Islands.”

Arrested for Full enquiry is expected growing drugs on Espases hospital A MAN, aged 29, has been arrested in Algaida by the Guardia Civil who seized 17 marihuana plants which were being grown in two different locations. The suspect, a Colombian national, has been charged with an alleged crime against public health after a patrol located a farm where plants were growing before officers discovered another plantation at a house in Palma.

PALMA’S plenary meeting is expected to approve this week the commission of a full enquiry on the Espases hospital. The PP will propose the establishment of a commission of inquiry to examine, among other things, the selection of the land, the awarding of the work, its construction, the provision of facilities and the access road to the centre to determine if irregularities or corruption were present during the process. Opposition parties are calling for the commission’s work to be made public which the PP has said “in principle” they are not against.

He broke his hip, leg and suffered a head injury from the fall and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the Espases Hospital in Palma.

Shelter gives out of date food A KITCHEN shelter for adults in Palma city centre has been criticised and denounced for allegedly giving afternoon snacks that were out of date. The company running the snack service have now stopped giving out chocolate bars and packets of crisps to around 40 homeless people after people complained they were out of date which was confirmed by inspectors who visited the shelter. Councillor for Social Welfare, Ana Ferriol, said: “The food which was being complained about was not partitioned by the City Council or authorised to be distributed.” She added: “We have requested a report to the technicians who performed the inspection. When we have the conclusions of the report we will decide whether corrective or disciplinary action is to be taken.” The snacks have been removed and since then no replacements have been made with users going without their afternoon treat.

Schooner ship Atyla arrives in Palma Bay THE impressive looking Atyla schooner ship has been anchored in the middle of Palma Bay. Visitors and spectators were surprised to see the classic boat just a short distance from the coast. The Atyla is a 31 metre long two-masted staysail schooner handmade in Spain using hardwoods. Despite its elderly appearance, it is a relatively modern vessel, being built between 1980 and 1984.

The original idea behind the ship was to travel around the world following the route of Juan Sebastian Elcano, with the support of the project’s sponsor Petronor, but plans changed a few months after its launch. Two years later the ship travelled to the Canary Islands where it remained until 2005, offering tours around the port of Playa Blanca. It then spent six years in Santander under the

Sun reduces shop sales TURNOVER in Mallorcan shops crashed in September because of lower spending by tourists during the month in which the island saw the highest temperatures recorded. The Association of Small and Medium Commerce of Mallorca (Pimeco) said: “The high temperatures in September and unwillingness of tourists to buy have been a severe punishment in the Mallorcan retail trade of fashion, footwear and accessories.”

Delays in works affect tourism HOTELS are reporting delays from councils across Mallorca in dealing with the necessary licences to start construction work. Dozens of hotels are renovating throughout the winter and say the delays will have an effect on their reopening ready for the new season in March 2015.

The executive vicepresident of the Association of Hoteliers in Mallorca, Inma de Benito, said it is an “insensitivity” of some councils when approving the building permit. The delays could force works to be cancelled, having a knock-on effect for construction workers

and the boost in tourism the completed works would bring. The estimated value of the planned works this winter is close to €500m. Inma de Benito said municipalities are requesting more reports from the the Regional Ministry of Tourism who are “overwhelmed” by the demands.

Mother complains of receiving no support for disabled daughter A RESIDENT of Calvia is taking action against the Department of Social Services for not providing support for her only daughter who has Williams Syndrome. The single parent said she has “never received help” throughout her child’s schooling and into adulthood, despite the condition being recognised as a 70 per cent disability.

Speaking out about the case, the mother, who works in public administration and is dedicated to the care of children with special needs, said her next step will be to put the matter to the attention of the Office and the College of Social Workers. Williams Syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by an ‘elfin’ like facial appearance.

Proper waste works agreement THE Mallorca Hotel Business Federation (FEHM) has renewed a collaboration agreement with Insular MAC to ensure proper waste management works. The agreement will see the promotion, implementation and operational practice to ensure the proper management of waste from construction, demolition and from reforms in the hotel industry. The CEO of MAC Insular, Jose Maria Bauza and Executive Vice President FEHM, Inmaculada Benito, signed an agreement that reflects the desire of both parties to prevent the growing proliferation of illegal landfills stressing that waste should be disposed and deposited in the correct ways according to regulations.

Islands came out top as the most popular tourist region with 89.3 million overnight stays in 2013 with Catalu単a (70.5 million overnight stays) and the Balearic Islands (65.3 million) coming in the top five favourite European destinations. The Paris metropolitan area (77.5 million) and the Croatian Hrvatska Jadranska region (61.8 million) rounded off the top five. Andalucia came in eighth place with the Valencia region in 12th place. In addition to the Spanish regions, among the top 20 tourist regions of the EU, six were located in Italy and five in France, with London also making the list.

Sencelles golf course scrapped GOLF promoters Son Saletes in Sencelles, despite insisting they are planning a new golf course in the area and having applied for a licence, have not paid the fees or presented a suitable project. Mayor Bartomeu Morro said their registered interest has now been declared null and void as they did not submit for the required developer

licence within the deadlines. The developers said the deadlines coincided with the illness and then death of businessman Ventura Rubi making it difficult for them to carry out the necessary administrative procedures. They also claim there was an error in the identification of the land where the golf course was planned.

No television signal Adolescent health talk for Son Servera THERE are calls for the managing director of public company Multimedia Illes Balears to step down after residents of Son Servera were left without television signals yet again. The latest breakdown within the company, responsible for the TDT signal, left users without digital and terrestrial TV for 24 hours. It is believed the failure was down to a loss of power from the first generator with the second, emergency generator failing to activate properly.

Marti Asensio’s 2 year sentence The ex-managing director of Real Mallorca, has been sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to return 617,729 euros to the ailing football club. Javier Marti Asensio, who was the owner of the club between August and November 2009, has been ordered to pay back the money or serve the

two year prison sentence. The ex-delegate councillor of the town hall bought 93.4 per cent of the football club’s shares for €4.27 million, which was due to be paid over 12 months with promissory cheques. Only one of the cheques was honoured but he continued to use

A special 112 service for hearing and speech impaired EMERGENCY services in the Balearics have announced the start of a special service that enables people with hearing or speech difficulties to communicate with the 112 emergency service. The system operates over the phone number 900 112 100 and allows those who cannot speak or hear to be able to express themselves. To make this possible, an SMS messaging service is automatically activated. Both the call and the messaging service is free. The new service was announced in a

ceremony that took place at the headquarters of the Association of the Deaf in Palma. In addition to offering the special phone number and service for the hearing and speech impaired, the emergency services are building a database of people with the relevant communication difficulties. There are already more than 200 people with hearing and speech disabilities registered for the service. The database enables 112 to offer a personalised service tailored to the users’ needs.

Extra cash for Binissalem BINISSALEM is expected to invest around €1.4 million on 11 infrastructure projects. Spanish nurse contracts Ebola A SPANISH NURSE, Teresa Romero Ramos, 44, has tested positive for the Ebola virus after coming into contact with the infected missionary, Manuel García Viejo. And now her husband has been admitted to hospital for observation as a high-risk case. The auxiliary nurse tested positive for the deadly virus after displaying symptoms including a high fever. The husband of the stricken nurse - the first case of Ebola to be contracted and diagnosed in Europe - is isolated in quarantine and will be observed, although he is still not displaying any symptoms. Two others have also been put in quarantine: a man who has

recently returned from a trip to Nigeria, and another nurse who does not have a fever, but is displaying symptoms including diarrhoea. A total of 52 other hospital workers are also being closely watched for symptoms of the disease. The infected nurse, who works at Madrid’s Carlos III Hospital, treated priest Manuel García Viejo, who was flown to the Spanish capital from Sierra Leone. García Viejo died of the virus on September 26. The woman is the third Ebola sufferer to be treated in Spain, but the first to contract the virus on Spanish soil. She is the first case in the history of the virus contracted outside of the African continent.

Grants for gap years THE MES political party is proposing that students aged between 18 and 22 years who are abroad on a gap year, receive a grant of €300. MES says the monies should be paid to those working outside Spain for an NGO to encourage volunteering and gap year experiences to “open minds, increase self-confidence, learn foreign languages and experience personal enrichment” before starting university. They propose a five year pilot scheme with a limited budget and are calling for the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) to encourage working abroad.

Swimming around Mallorca... TO take a swim in the beautiful blue Mediterranean Sea is one of life’s joys a few of us are lucky enough to enjoy on a regular basis. But Richard Krugel has taken it a big step further. He likes to swim; in fact, he enjoys swimming so much that he is in the midst of a madcap venture to swim around the entire coast of Mallorca, all 360 kilometres of it. This crazy feat of personal endurance came about out of sad personal circumstances. Some 11 years ago, Richard was working in the yachting industry in Mallorca when news reached him that his brother Ewald had been killed in a car accident. Unable to get back to his homeland immediately, some friends took him to a remote beach to console him and try and make some sense out of the terrible event. Whilst taking a dip, Richard decided that one day, to honour his brother’s life, he would like to swim around the entire coast of Mallorca. Fast forward a few years and Richard was now living back in his homeland of South Africa, happily married with a family when news reached him that two friends were swimming from Mozambique to Madagasgar. That was enough to ignite the flame in Richard’s mind and he began a programme of endurance swimming. Richard had planned his circumnavigation pretty carefully. Anticipating a swim of six hours would enable him to cover approximately 16 kilometres daily. Everything has been strictly planned in accordance with WOWSA regulations (World Open Water Swimming); the estimated duration of the swim was initially expected to last 18 days. As this was going to be a long swim, over seven days, in the event of bad weather, the swim could be broken for

up to 72 hours. Before sunrise, at 7am on Saturday September 20, a group of people gathered in Palma on Ciudad Jardin beach to watch Richard set off on the first leg of his epic journey. Closely followed by support vessel Llaut Atlantis (a typical Mallorcan fishing boat) – steered by compatriot Nic Kuwle, the route had been carefully mapped out, with moorings booked en route. For the first few days the sea was a warm 26 degrees and the wind moderate. Aside from a bit of local traffic they made good progress, and were pretty much on target as they headed anti-clockwise around the island towards Santanyi. But then on Day Three, dark storm clouds gathered and Richard took a severe hammering as the weather closed in and he bravely had to swim against the elements. On more than one occasion the swim had to be abandoned until the next day. Since then, the last two weeks have been beset with some of the worst storms Mallorca has seen in 2014. On a few days, it was just too dangerous to go

out. Beaten but not broken, the steely South Africans have battled on and by Day 15, they were somewhere between Formentor and Puerto Soller. Calm, glassy seas have been a welcome change for Team Mallorca 360 and Richard is in great spirits as he heads down the north coast of the island towards Dragonara. The days lost due to the weather will mean that the project is going to take longer than the projected 18 days, but hopefully if conditions hold, Richard should swim his way back to Palma arriving sometime next week. HILE I was working in the Middle East some time ago I noticed that a friend of mine living there always had a brand new swanky car every single year. This particular man ran an organic food supermarket and café and he was so ‘green’ that he actually charged his mobile phone by connecting it to a type of pump, on which he jumped up and down and the energy he created powered his phone! Therefore I was naturally

drove up to the meeting in a shiny new car, his prospective business partners had more respect for him and he made a better deal. Superficial, isn’t it? But the same thing is happening on European shores too. According to a recent news report, many businesses are advising their staff, not on the car

they drive, but on their appearance in the workplace and telling them that a sharp look can help improve their career. A famous Swiss bank has a 44-page dress-code document drafted up on everything from appropriate underwear to the importance of regular haircuts. While a wellknown accountancy firm

reminds new recruits of the importance of appearance, stressing that people make up their mind about them in just 30 seconds. Research from a UK psychology professor clearly shows that what a person wears has a big impact on others’ impressions of them and on their subsequent career opportunities. She says women whose work wear is ‘slightly provocative’ are judged to be less competent and therefore less likely to get promoted. While, a man in an off-the-shelf suit is judged as less successful and less flexible than his counterpart who wears a tailor-made suit. As shallow as all this does appear, the unfortunate truth is that we live in a very imageobsessed world and how we present ourselves on the surface probably does drive other people’s opinions of us and our potential.

Ratings war FITCH Ratings placed Cataluña and the Institut Catala de Finances (ICF) on Rating Watch Negative (RWN). The ratings agency warned that as the region will probably need access to the regional liquidity fund (FLA) next year, its bonds would risk being downgraded to junk status without the national government’s support.

Car dealership owners likely have difficulty changing a spark plug. Often the restaurateur is hopeless in the kitchen whilst famous name authors are useless at writing. Football fans agree that many team managers are incapable of physically playing football. Home improvement companies employ salesmen who haven’t the foggiest idea what a Phillips screwdriver is. Where the successful business owner does succeed is in successful team management. I have done both. As a salesman I was consistently the top

performer, at team management I was an also ran. Those who cannot recruit, select, train, inspire, lead and manage a team will never run a successful business. Business owners whose attitude is, ‘if you want a job doing properly do it yourself,’ can never compete against a rival’s well-managed team. I fall into this category. I used my wife to hire and fire. Such is the difference between shop floor and sales that occasionally it is necessary to cross no-man’s land. I recall being interviewed by a pathway

and patio installation marketing company. Salesmen were advised to visit clients wearing cords and body warmers rather than suits. This was to create the illusion that they were familiar with managing the task. Instead of focusing on running your business turn your attention instead to effectively managing your staff. Each has a task; encourage, empathise and reward them. Delegate and use the strengths of each individual where they are likely to be most effective. A people person is best with clients; great at the counter, reception or in sales. Those lacking personality best put them out of sight. If a family or staff member is creative then let them help with marketing. Successful business management means putting round pegs in round holes, square pegs in square holes.

Adding fuel to the winter payment fire I FULLY agree with the Editor regarding the heating allowance. Bus passes, television licences, rent and rates rebate should be abolished and pensioners should receive a liveable state pension. As my late mother-in-law said: “I don’t need these payments, just give me a decent pension.” Of course this would create redundancies in the civil service and local government, a cost the central government might wish to avoid. Spain, they say, is a hot country so you don’t need the allowance. How is it that the mountains are covered in snow in winter? Madrid isn’t exactly boiling hot in winter and neither is most of northern Spain. Who is kidding who? Let us have our vote back and a reasonable pension. After all, we did pay taxes during our working lives so now let’s enjoy the benefits of our labours. Robert Peake, Mijas Pueblo (Malaga)

Not viable THE winter fuel allowance is a nonsense and should end. Pension credits are available for those who need them and other benefits exist. The Editor’s conclusions are illogical: the UK may be a wealthy country but it can’t afford the drugs and health service that keep us alive until we can’t walk or talk. It then nurses us to an end that is unsatisfactory in quality of life and they pay us bigger pensions. We are at a point where half the population work for money. The other half, in education or retired, are supported by those working and supplemented by savings. Pension schemes are based upon workers contributing but nearly half of workers’ pay is removed by taxes and national insurance. It is foolish economics and populist nonsense to say “Pensioners deserve better.” Pensioners have to realise they have already had a chance to earn and save and many have huge assets in their possessions.

State pensions have to be a safety net, not a salary by right. Sixty per cent of the world’s population is in dire poverty yet many of them put away up to 20 per cent in savings to help pay for schooling, health and care for their elderly family members. Pampered western cultures have to cut back on quality of life, meaning excessive benefits, high tax, superb healthcare, generous infrastructure and help for all those in need. Then they can afford to help others around the world who are vastly worse off although some economies are catching up. We in Europe have about 5 per cent of the world’s population and 25 per cent of its wealth. That is changing fast and we shall have to tighten our belts for a long time yet. nasty experiences on flights, some years ago four of us took a flight to Cyprus from Gatwick in London. Twenty minutes into the flight, the captain announced that we had to return to Gatwick for technical reasons. As we came in to land we were followed by two fire engines either side! The passengers remained absolutely quiet, without a titter. We waited for five hours before we took off again but were told that our luggage would follow on another flight. When we finally got it next day, the cases were slightly damp.

Lights out I AM writing in reference to the absolutely dreadful service we encounter all too often here in Spain. Our community of 22 dwellings was left without electricity after a storm and as I didn’t have the community account information, which is kept by our administrators, I got the reply that Endesa were unable to help. It took four phone calls, the last one from the electrician we often use, and six-and-a-half hours for Endesa to sort this problem out. As the storms raged on we woke up to the same problem, although after only three phone calls and three hours waiting, the electricity came back on. It was a very frustrating situation as Endesa seemed incapable of identifying where we were located and kept telling me

there was no problem. To say they were unhelpful would be an understatement: they simply didn’t appear to care that 22 houses were without electricity! Anne-Marie Savastano (by email)

Ludo torture I READ with interest a story in the online edition of the Euro Weekly News. It described the indignation of a group of friends fined for playing ‘parchis’ in Malaga town square after midnight. Well done, Local Police! I would like each of those doughty officers to receive a commendation if not a medal. This cut-throat version of ludo should be played in a soundproof room or preferably a padded cell. I also believe a fine of €101 each was far too lenient if, as Euro Weekly News revealed, they were playing for three hours. No wonder there were complaints as these fanatics rattled their dice in that horrid little cup and scatter them noisily on the board until 2am. In the days when I lived in a seafront apartment an entire summer was made unbearable by a family of Madrileños who spent all night, every night playing ‘parchis.’ I only wish I’d had the nerve to ring the police as the Malaga residents did. They never learn MORE PEOPLE have been killed and massacred in the name of God due to organised religion than anything else. It’s only logical true believers in a spiritual deity wouldn’t normally murder their fellow human beings although throughout history the same contradictory mistakes were repeated in order to benefit one religion or another. All religions are organisations and structures conceived by human beings, with their intrinsic faults and defects. Personally, I prefer the Golden Rule, which never fails: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Why is this simple Rule so difficult to apply and practice? Taking a lead from Saudi… A

LTHOUGH all rather macabre, I did find the highly media covered re-enactment of the two alleged murders of the Thai backpackers, pretty riveting this week. It was actually not the first time I had observed this practice of public demonstration by criminal perpetrators. I remember on one occasion, while watching extremely boring Saudi Television, the programme was suddenly interrupted by a voice informing us that two Filipinos had confessed to the particularly vicious rape and murder of a Saudi man and wife. The scene then opened in the bedroom of the unfortunate victims. The accused then proceeded to reenact the whole sordid series of events. At the close of the action the men, in full close-up, confessed to both murders. The following Friday, after prayers, they chopped off their heads in the market square. Job done. These men bore no apparent marks or signs of any form of torture and frankly, in this latest incident, these two men would, in my opinion, need to have been under the direction of Carl Foreman and possess

Just received an email from an extremely irate reader who informed me that because I have lived abroad for nearly 40 years I have no knowledge of what the political situation is in Briton. Well, all I can say to that is I’ve never actually ever lived in China, but I certainly have a good idea what’s going on over there. Also what’s afoot in North Korea, Libya, Australia, and Afghanistan, etc. In this day and age the plight of the whole world is at our fingertips, dear reader. Thanks for your interest. HO do you trust? Politicians? Bankers? The police? Trust is now at an all time low for many, mainly due to those at the top who have let the rest of us down. Indeed, it was recently suggested that all UK MPs should attend ‘honesty’ classes. And that’s the truth, honestly! But let he who is without sin cast the first stone. After all, haven’t most of us been economical with the truth at some point? “Nice outfit” tends to work better than “you look a bit chubby in that.” Not to mention: “That’s odd because you were definitely on the guest list!” Or: “I’ve had a few problems with my email - must be the server!” According to a recent study, 60 per cent of people lied at least once during a 10 minute conversation. Unsurprisingly, men lie differently from women, tending to lie ‘upwards’ (‘earn more,’ are ‘taller’)

while women lie downwards (‘weigh less,’ slept with ‘fewer people,’ are ‘younger’). And politicians? They’ve raised lying to an Olympic sport. Remember Chris Huhne’s speeding points? Or Bill Clinton’s “I did not have sexual relations

I’VE hardly been back to work five minutes and I am already up to my neck in community events and things to do, heigh ho! So here, in no particular order, are a few things for you to get yourself along to if you can. Europeos Por España (EPORE) will be starting their autumn programme soon. There is going to be a talk on Wednesday October 15 at 6.30pm at the Botel Alcudiamar in the Port of Alcudia. The speaker (who will present in English) will be Antonio Deudero. He is Director General of the Regional Government for Ports and Airports. It is free to go along but the group does like to know if you are going so please send an email to joyce@casa-rotger.net. My friends Anthea and Julian De Freitas are organising a dinner dance in Andratx at the Cultural Centre on October 24 in aid of the Cancer Support Group. It sounds like a great evening has been planned. The dress code is a touch of pink. The tickets are on sale for

BAKE OFF! Cake competition fiercely contended. And one that you might have missed: a week ago last Friday there was a fantastic fundraising event, Mallorca’s Biggest Coffee

Morning organised by the 41 Club and held at Mood Beach in Costa D’en Blanes. It was in aid of the Cancer Support Group, En Lazo

de Movimiento, and the Micky Heart Pillow Project. Many cakes were brought in and entered in the five different categories: Best Chocolate, Sponge, Fruit, Decorated and Cup Cake. The judges had a tough time deciding but in the end they presented awards to the best bakers. The prizes were generously donated by local businesses Nice Price Supermarket, Bodhana Wellness, The Country Club Santa Ponça, Mood Beach Bar and Restaurant and Son Amar Dinner Show. There was also a ‘Guess the Weight of the Cake’ competition, won by Jackie Codd from Age Concern who promptly re-donated the cake which was auctioned off to a hungry crowd. Payback time in Cataluña N

OTHING is happening in Cataluña that wasn’t expected. It’s all illegal: the law passed by the Catalan parliament to enable the November 9 independence ballot is illegal and so was the subsequent ballot announcement. Spain’s ultimate court, the Constitutional Tribunal, has said so; Spain’s State Council said so and so has Spain’s President Mariano Rajoy. Cataluña’s pro-independence faction forged ahead despite knowing what was going to happen. It looks suspiciously as though they were inviting the November 9 veto to underline Cataluña’s martyrdom at the hands of the rest of Spain. Not all Catalans are separatists and not all are anti-Spanish but a large proportion of them are anti-Spanish government. Given the chance to vote on November 9 many of the pro-independence votes would be punishment votes, just as David Cameron feared before the Scottish ballot. “Don’t vote ‘yes’ just to give the effing Tories a kicking,” he pleaded beforehand.

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride WAS Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, Spain’s former Justice Minister handed a poisoned chalice? Formerly popular Ruiz-Gallardon never lost an election; he was Madrid’s regional president during three terms and mayor of Madrid for another two. He was always ambitious and always wanted the Big One, as Mariano Rajoy was well aware, keeping him out of national politics for as long as possible. Naming him Justice Minister in 2011 was logical, but giving him abortion

reform, which should have been a Health Ministry responsibility, was not. Mariano Rajoy knew every step of the way the direction that the new Bill was taking and possibly misjudged popular feeling regarding abortion. The law was obviously withdrawn as a vote-loser but that withdrawal also facilitated RuizGallardon’s downfall and exit. Two birds, one stone.

Fine piece of China RUIZ-GALLARDON’S Universal Justice law was also unpopular for ruffling the feelings of Spanish judges by curtailing their right to pursue Human Rights cases outside Spain. One such case, now abandoned, was an attempt by high court judge Ismael Moreno to prosecute China’s former president and prime minister about the part both men played in genocide in Tibet. Beijing reacted by threatening trade reprisals and the chastened Spanish government hurriedly reacted by bringing in the Universal Justice law. Mariano Rajoy recently returned from China having signed agreements worth €3.15 billion: mission accomplished.

Get the record straight CATALUÑA’S former president Jordi Pujol recently addressed the regional parliament to explain why he salted away an undeclared multimillion inheritance from his father in foreign tax havens. Conceding that this was worthy of criticism, the 84year-old who was Cataluña’s president for 23 years, claimed that he was never a corrupt politician. But no-one was asking about politics and there is nothing more incriminating than making excuses for something you’re not accused of.

There are many kennels on the coast some are well run and licensed, others are not. Often I receive calls from owners complaining when they collect their pets from kennels they look thin, it’s always best to take your own food and of course medication.

I always recommend you DON’T BOOK UNTIL YOU LOOK. If a kennel will not allow you to look around, then go somewhere else since they may have something to hide. Fireman tries to bring puppy back to life

LIFE SAVER: The fireman gave the puppy mouth-to-mouth.

A FIREMAN in Sagunto, Valencia, was caught on film bringing a puppy back from the dead. A video clip has been doing the rounds on social media channels since Wednesday, October 1. The clip shows fireman Carlos Arana give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a two-month-old Yorkshire Terrier puppy after rescuing it from a house fire in Sagunto. As the video shows, Arana performed CPR for more than three minutes on the lifeless puppy, and

after chest compressions and an oxygen mask failed to reanimate the little dog, Arana can be seen bringing the puppy round with the kiss of life. A fellow firefighter, Cristobel Jover Badia, caught the incident on camera. He said: “Carlos grabbed the puppy and ran outside where he started pumping its chest. “The poor little thing was completely limp but Carlos was determined to save him. “He put an oxygen mask over its muzzle but when neither that nor the

pumping worked he prised its mouth open and gave it mouth-to-mouth.” The puppy was taken for further treatment at a local veterinary clinic, but unfortunately later died from its injuries. The clinic issued a statement saying: “Unfortunately, despite the incredible efforts of the fireman, there was just too much smoke damage in the poor thing’s lungs.” Even though this story does not have a happy ending, Carlos Arana is still being applauded across Facebook and Twitter for his efforts.

WENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Mrs Parkhurst Duer was chatting with clerks when the door opened. As she looked from her desk a shabbily dressed, very dejected man entered the New York publishing house lobby and leaned against the counter near the door. The clerk recalled: “I noticed he looked ill and weak. No one spoke to him. A clerk laughed and said: “Steve looks down and out.” “Everyone laughed and the poor man saw them all laughing at him. It seemed to me my heart stood still, intuition perhaps and I asked, who is that man?” “Stephen Foster,” the clerk replied. “He is only a vagabond. Don’t go near him.” The married clerk smiled. “Yes, I will go near him, that man needs a friend.” She went on to write: “I was terribly shocked. Forcing back the tears I waited for that lump in the throat which prevents speech to clear away. anything about his life; yet his songs had created in me a feeling of reverence for the man and I longed to see him.” Lovers of great melodies will be familiar with such whimsical ballads as I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, Oh Susanna and The Old Folks at Home. The most popular source of

entertainment were songs performed in theatres or when family and friends gathered around the piano in the bar or in their homes. The ballads of this homeless vagrant brought a lump to throats from Alaska to Durban, New Zealand to Buenos Aires and United States. One hundred and fifty years on, Beautiful Dreamer and My Old Kentucky Home still evoke nostalgia. Few know of the man and the tragedy behind these much loved songs. Born into a comfortable and loving family the short life of Stephen Collins Foster (1826 - 1864) was a riches to rags story. This increases the poignancy of his death at the age of just 37. When America’s most gifted songwriter died during a bitterly cold New York winter’s night he was sick, homeless; probably an alcoholic. In his pocket, when he died, were just 38 cents and words scribbled on a scrap of paper, ‘Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts.’ By this time he had composed over 175 songs. “Ah music,” surmised French composer, Georges Bizet. “What a beautiful art, but what a wretched profession.” holiday with my husband, the first in over 20 years, since we had our children. We went to Paris and had a wonderful time with friends and family.”

SCENARIOS Possibility 1. Captain Shah was extremely upset that his close friend Anwar bin Ibrahim, leader of the opposition, had recently been jailed for five years for sodomony and wished to correct, what he saw, as gross injustice. He decided to take the plane over to do some dastardly deed with it, and to return to Malaysian airspace, after turning off the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, (ACARS), the Transponder, the Cockpit Voice Recorder, and the Digital Flight Data Recorder. He chose his moment, just prior to calling Ho Chi Min Flight Information Region (HCM FIR) having been told by Lumpur Flight Information Region that his flight had been handed over. For seconds and often minutes you are in ‘no man’s land’ at this point. When the aircraft turned back, it was tracked by Malaysian Armed Forces primary radar. At this point, Captain Shah attempted to negotiate the release of his friend and gave the authorities five hours to comply before crashing the aircraft into the

No Malaysian military aircraft was scrambled and it was not until five hours later that Fl. MH370 was reported missing. Deal breaker for this scenario. 1. The First Officer would not have left his seat at this point of the Sector. The work load can be quite high when establishing contact and entering a new FIR. The Captain would have to incapacitate the FO. 2. The Captain would never be sure just what the Malaysian Armed Forces would do to prevent his ‘hi-jacking.’ 3. If I had been the Captain with fanatical political thoughts (and a Muslim of course) and negotiations failed I would not monotonously track over the Indian Ocean whilst passengers are trying to kick the cockpit door down; I

would have put the aircraft into that magnificent unique ornate railway station in Kuala Lumpur! This scenario has just too many holes in it.

Possibility 2 This possibility has been banded about by conspiracy theorists and those who know nothing about the operation of large commercial aircraft. The aircraft turned back towards KL (undisputed) then turned north west towards the ‘‘stans’ and landed in one of the airfields up there. Deal breaker for this Scenario. 1. It takes about $250,000 worth of ground handling equipment to ensure a wide body aircraft can be ‘relaunched.’ An aircraft tug and tow bar cost me nearly $100,000 nearly 30

years ago! Fifty Taliban pushing on the landing gear just wouldn’t work. 2. Where’s the passengers? This is a non-starter.

Possibility 3 Prior to take off a fire started in the MEC located under the cockpit floor. This is home to to all communication equipment and the wire looms for the ‘black boxes.’ Unfortunately the crew emergency oxygen bottle is also located there. There have been over 20 cases of fire in this area on this type of aircraft always starting on engine start up but usually detected before take off; none have been fatal but all caused extensive damage. MH370 took off with a fire under the cockpit floor and was not detected by the crew.

Thirty minutes after take off the aircraft reached its cruise altitude (FL350), the fire was now serious and they probably began to smell it. The structure was weakened and with a pressure of 8.3 pounds per square inch on it, an explosive decompression occurred. This took out many avionic boxes including communications and destroyed the Crew Emergency Oxygen bottle. Aircraft can still fly with a relatively small hole blown in the side and ironically on depletion of cabin pressure there is a total depletion of oxygen thus immediately extinguishing the fire. Now there is no oxygen to the crew (the passengers would have had eight-12 minutes with their emergency supply), the temperature inside the aircraft is minus 53 Centigrade, and the crew instinctively go

through their ‘total loss of cabin pressure’ well rehearsed routine. Before being totally overcome by hypoxia they were able to give the Flight Management System a few commands that would have turned the aircraft back to Kuala Lumpur automatically. These commands were neither totally correct or complete. Sadly the crew were soon brain dead; the aircraft never reached the lower life sustaining altitude and the cabin occupants sadly succumbed to the same fate. The aircraft then flew for approximately eight hours as a ghost flight over the Indian Ocean. Deal breakers on this scenario There aren’t any! The exact cause of the aircraft demise we know not. The lack of the whereabouts of the aircraft is due to the lack of action by the Malaysian Armed Forces on the night that an unidentified aircraft showed up on their Primary Radar screen. A pair of interceptor fighters should have been immediately launched to investigate the ‘intruder.’ By viewing the aircraft a lot can be established and if it was a ‘ghost’ flight, then arrangements could be made to ‘hand over’ the visual surveillance to other countries viz. Indonesia, Singapore and Australia until MH370 run out of fuel and ditched.

The chicken is so succulent, due to the fact it is marinated overnight, that it literally fell apart in your mouth.

AROMAS: Great entertainment too. It was served in a Tandoori sauce with a side of mint yoghurt, chunky chips and a mixed salad, a very pleasing choice. Back by crazy customer demand is Rock & Ribs night with a house special of sticky ribs and Cajun wedges for just â‚Ź6.95 and only on a Tuesday. Believe me these were flying

out of the kitchen . There was not a spare table in the house on the Tuesday as everyone

flocks through the doors to enjoy the Rock & Ribs night and the house certainly was rocking ! WITH the arrival of autumn and the return to schools and nurseries, bronchitis is more prevalent in children than ever. The disease, characterised by its cough, affects 80 per cent of children in the first two years of life and results in the most hospitalisations of children up to the age of 14 above other diseases such as tonsillitis, appendicitis and

gastroenteritis. In the last 10 years more than 63,000 children have been admitted to health centres with the condition. However, despite the high incidence of the disease, health officials say there has been a significant improvement in mortality data (decreased by almost 30 per cent) and the average stay in hospital has fallen and currently stands at 5.6 days.

MORE than 1.5 million elderly people live alone in Spain. The Federation of Friends of the Elderly said it is an “unknown situation that moves silently” as they launched an awareness campaign ‘They’re living alone’ to mark International Day of Older Persons. The number of elderly has grown significantly in recent decades, as the over 65s represent 18 per cent of the population and the numbers are expected to grow. The federation is suggesting everyone should visit an elderly person and take a photo to be uploaded to social media sites using #NoEstáisSolos to raise awareness.

High cost of alcohol spending in Britain THE average person in Britain spends £50,000 (€64,000) on alcohol in their lifetime. The figures, compiled for Macmillan Cancer Support, show there are around 1.3 million people who spend almost triple this average figure. Men spend more cash on booze; an average of £934.44 (€1,201) per year, compared to women who spend £678.60 (€871). When it comes to choice of drink, around one in three people surveyed said wine was their top tipple, followed by beer and then spirits. For those aged 1824, spirits were their top choice. Macmillan is asking people to partake in the ‘Go Sober in October’ challenge; being sponsored to abstain from alcohol during the month.

Foreign investment in construction sector SEVEN years after the burst of the bubble, the construction sector is once again the most attractive industry for foreign investors in Catalonia. According to the Ministry of Economy and

Competitiveness, â‚Ź152.5 million out of the â‚Ź523.3 million received by Catalonia from outside Spain during the first six months of the year had the construction sector as its destination.

This represents 30 per cent of the total investment received during the period and doubles that invested in industry, which fell 50 per cent year-on-year during the same timeframe. Although the foreign investment received in Catalonia has decreased in almost all main sectors, the figures have been less dramatic in the construction sector with only a 27 per cent reduction. Other sectors such as industry (-92 per cent), transport (-94 per cent) and food and beverages (-94 per cent) have felt the pinch much harder. Salvador Guillermo, Director of Economia de Fomento del Trabajo, has pointed out it is too early to be fully optimistic since great deals in the sector may have distorted the data. Moreover, he has highlighted it is possible that the secessionist process in Catalonia may cause some uncertainty

amongst investors; however there is nothing that indicates this so far. Guillermo also believes that the process initiated by banks to sell their active assets has caught the attention of the investors who now understand that their market price might not continue devaluating for much longer. Furthermore, Jose Garcia Moltavo, professor in the Pompeu Fabra University, considers that the foreign investment is being diverted to the construction sector due to the small returns financial markets are providing nowadays. In his research, he confirmed 27.9 per cent of buyers purchase properties as an investment and that this percentage is much higher in Barcelona City. In addition, he believes the majority of buyers are small investors and pensioners who use their savings to pay for the property to rent it out.

Madrid region puts housing policies through relocation in place to help those families in need MADRID has allocated a total of 201 houses to

Counsellor for Transport, Infrastructures and Housing, has announced the initiative whilst handing the apartment keys to a

couple in Alcorcon, south of Madrid. Carabante stated that: “the goal is to help families have a second chance since the region is aware of the financial radical change that many families have suffered in a very short period of time.” For the new apartment dwellers, Priscila and Javier, this represents the opportunity to start a new life. “We had the eviction order to leave the apartment on September 11 and had to leave. reinsertion of these families with their new neighbours. To achieve this, the Relocation and Social Integration Institute works with the families for years in order to ensure they fully integrate into society. “In some cases, these individuals do not have a proof of identification and, very often, are analphabetic,” remarked Carabante. The rent the relocated families will have to pay will depend on their financial situation. However, they will need to carry out with the day-to-day duties of the community, such us bringing the rubbish bags to the containers, looking after the building and respecting their neighbours.

The Barcelona Boat Show has come at the right time for a Spanish comeback AS BARCELONA gears up for its biggest ever Boat Show, Marina Estrella believes the timing couldn’t be better as Spanish buyers are returning to the market after a number of years of absence. At the fiveday event which kicks off at 10am on Wednesday October 15, 175,000 visitors are expected. Guy Norrish from 1972-established Marina Estrella, explained: “Over recent years the Spanish have been conspicuous by their absence, with the ‘slack’ being taken up by buyers from traditional northern European countries, further east, and, increasingly, from Latin America. “As Spain raises its economic growth forecasts, marine infrastructure improves, more moorings become available, and bureaucracy is relaxed with regards to key issues such as yachting licences, taxation and charter, the buyers are coming back

and appreciating Spain as one of the best cruising grounds in the world.” Guy continues, “Barcelona has a terrific location, is easily reached from all over Europe, and this 53rd edition of the Boat Show promises to be the largest to date at newly-remodelled Marina Port Vell. Barcelona, like Palma, is an example of a European boat show that has adapted, survived and prospered, while others have lessened considerably in importance. Take Genoa, once a must-visit, now overtaken strongly by Cannes. At Marina Estrella our expectations for Barcelona are high.” Marina Estrella will be taking no fewer than 20 boats to Barcelona. These include the entry-level €80,000 Varianta 37 and Moody DS54 sailing boats, both being seen for the first time in Barcelona. Also four sporty Cobalt motorboats, including the 336 which is the first to be seen in Europe,

Minute imperfections such as knots and flecks lead to instant rejection. Adjustments to the colour of each piece are made through the traditional hand-process of hot-sand shading before a final inspection under magnification on a light box to ensure perfection. The cityscape theme extends beyond Phantom’s many wood surfaces. A specially developed Aetherius Grey leather colour was created to echo the colour palette of the modern city whilst 6,800 two-tone stitches to the central rear seat flutes depict an abstract image of a skyscraper. A specially developed Bespoke clock extends the theme to the front of the car. For the first time in the marque’s history, a rotating bezel expressing 24 of the great cities of the world and their time zones adorns the central console. An exterior hue, Darkest Tungsten, inspired by city skylines finishes the exterior surfaces of the car on display in Paris.
