Almeria fire FIREFIGHTERS rushed to the scene of a house fire on Calle Bilbao in Almeria City. The fire broke out on the fifth floor and firefighters were able to control it. Nobody was hurt.
Olive oil mills OLIVE oil mills in Almeria have sold more than one million kilos of olive oil to foreign markets between January and July 2014, more than 206 million Euros in value.
More rescued THIRTY-THREE people of North African origin have been rescued from a boat just off the coast of Almeria. They have been transferred to Almeria City.

Town hall ordered to pay for illegal homes ALBOX Council has been ordered to pay compensation to four British families for moral damages. The council is preparing an appeal against the judgement by the criminal court number two of Almeria which requires local authorities to pay almost €150,000 to the affected families. Mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, said: “It is unacceptable that we have to pay the consequences of the disastrous management of the Partido Popular.” He did, however, applaud the judge’s decision to refuse to
proceed with demolition of the affected buildings. The Partido Popular (PP) was in power when construction began on Las Palmeras in Albox in 2004. Despite the land’s rural classification, Construcciones Alto Almanzora, the builders, were given permission by the town hall to proceed and utilities companies were authorised to connect the new properties. Judge Maria Teresa Vidaurreta decreed the homes as illegal but rejected a demolition order. She said that there would be no benefit and
demolition would only add to the moral damage suffered by the families so far. The chief justice of Almeria, Luis Colomna, announced that judges in the province do not wish to apply any more demolition orders and will do their utmost to ensure this happens. Judge Colomna said he wanted to send a message to the British community that the Spanish justice system has their support, adding that Susana Diaz, president of the Junta in Andalucia, had submitted plans to legalise most illegal properties.

English cemetery set to reopen AFTER three years of intense negotiations with the British Embassy, Almeria City is once again the owner of the 888 square metres of land that was ceded in perpetuity in 1887 for British burials of Anglicans that died in the capital. Carlos Sanchez, councillor for Health, Consumption and Cleanliness, has announced that ownership is back in the city’s hands and the commitment to maintenance of the graves, referring to the large number of English buried there from the mining era. Dog killed in vicious attack AN 84-year-old pensioner looked on helplessly as his 3.5 kilo dog was killed by a 24year-old man and his German Shepherd dog. The brutal incident occurred in El Alhanchete in Cuevas del Almanzora. The offender nudged his German Shepherd towards the small brown dog to attack it, as
the pensioner begged for him to stop. Instead of doing so, the young man mocked the owner, bragging that he would kill the dog and, lunging towards the pensioner, allegedly saying he would kill him too if he intervened. The young man then allegedly kicked the small dog repeatedly before picking it up
and throwing it onto a concrete base. Onlookers took the dog and its owner to Veravet in Vera, but the vet was unable to save the little dog’s life. Juan Manuel Taboada, the vet, said: “In my 14 years of practice I have never seen such cruelty to an animal, so devoid of pity.” TONI FLICKR.

MYSTERY PLAY OF ELCHE: One of the religious highlights of the year.
A date with history ONE of the religious highlights of the year is the Mystery Play of Elche. Normally performed in August, this year there is a second chance to see what has been declared by Unesco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Held at the Basilica of Santa Maria, the play dates back to the 15th century and is a chanted drama that commemorates the Assumption of Mary. In even numbered years there are extra ticketed performances on October 29 and 30, followed by free access on November 1. The play has lasted through to modern times despite the Council of Trento (1545 - 1563) banning

It is viewed as being the last truly Medieval Mystery Play surviving, with the text being taken from collections dating from 1625.

PSOE asks mayor to stop scaremongering in Huercal Overa THE Socialist party (PSOE) in Huercal Overa has asked Mayor Domingo Fernandez to avoid scaring the public
about the hospital’s loss of beds in what they describe as electoral strategy. Adele Segura,
Socialist leader in the town, said: “The Inmaculada hospital is an example of effective management.” Segura accused Fernandez of using health professionals and users to wear down the Andalucian decision from a “position that needs to be respected.” She continued: “The Andalucian government is not exactly taking away health, educational or social
benefits to the Spanish. I urge the mayor to exercise public responsibility when discussing topics such as health. “If you are really concerned about your residents, I suggest the government opposes Rajoy’s government in important areas such as health co-payment, cost of drugs, the closure of health centres or the privatisation of hospitals built with Spanish money.”

Seprona is filing a formal complaint at the town hall for the appalling conditions they have discovered. There was no on site vet or medical equipment, although there was a supply of tranquilisers which police suspect may have been used to euthanize animals. Velez Rubio’s mayor has spoken of his shock at the report and has opened an investigation into what has been described by the opposition as a “Dantesque version of canine hell.”

TWO Catalans have been fined €900 each for burning a portrait of the former King Juan Carlos I. The incident happened during a pro independence protest before the abdication. While not condoning the act, which may well have been taken as being insulting to many Royalists, it was still something that should be covered by freedom of expression. Disrespectful? Yes, but why should that be illegal? Surely the courts have better things to occupy their time with than this. The Royal Family is capable of looking after itself.
ALGARROBICO’S saga has taken another twist after a judgement has ruled that work may resume on the controversial hotel. The hotel which has been to-ing and fro-ing in the courts with permits being deemed legal and then rescinded has now been allowed to continue with construction. The news will come as a shock to Susana Diaz, the president of the Junta of Andalucia, who has vowed to do everything in her power to impede the construction.

Agricultural theft OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested a man in conjunction with a theft from agricultural warehouses in Nijar. The officers surprised the man as he was leaving the premises with a large quantity of plant products on October 2. CTT, a 39-year-old resident of Nijar, had been filling his van with the stolen items when police arrived. An additional person, in a second vehicle, evaded capture at the time, although investigations are continuing.

Mole finally revealed GORDON GOODY, mastermind of one of the most famous crimes in history, has finally revealed the identity of the mole of the sting whilst filming the documentary The Great Train Robbery: A Tale of Two Thieves at his home in Mojacar. Goody moved to southern Spain in 1975 after his release from prison. After many years of speculation and debate, he has revealed the missing mole as the late Paddy McKenna, a senior Royal mail worker from Belfast. McKenna is said to have been a devout Catholic who may have given his share of the loot to church charities. While Ronnie Biggs and Bruce Reynolds became cult figures in the UK, Gordon Goody chose Spain as a bolthole. He ran beach bar Chiringuito Kon Tiki in Mojacar.

Corrie star chooses Mojacar CORONATION STREET star Anne Kirkbride, who plays Deirde Barlow, has requested extended leave from Granada television chiefs until 2015 and plans to spend time at her property in Mojacar. Gravelly voiced Anne, who is famous for her glasses and on-screen relationships with Ken Barlow and Mike Baldwin, has revealed that her gruelling work schedule has left her mentally exhausted and has complained of long hours in the studios, describing it as “worse than being delayed at Alicante airport.” Anne tries to spend as much time at her Mojacar villa as possible, although it has not always offered the peace and relaxation she seeks. In 2009, Anne Kirkbride was amongst hundreds of people evacuated after the area was hit by bush fires.

Lucia was crowned at a gala held at the Teatro Villa in Huercal Overa. Five candidates had the opportunity to parade like models and don beautiful flamenco dresses. Very quickly the little girls lost their nervousness and performed for the audience. Family and friends who filled the theatre were able to see the girls’ most emotional moments in a video presentation which delighted the attendees. The winner was chosen by drawing lots. The girls had entered their names on balls that were placed in a bag. Last year’s winner, Esther Fuentes, pulled the winning ball

Boat arrivals rescued at sea MARITIME RESCUE have come to the aid of 58 immigrants of sub-Saharan origin 10 kilometres north west of Alboran island. The 58 immigrants included 10 children under the age of three years, with 32 men and 16 women. Emergency services were alerted when a vessel left Morocco at lunchtime on Sunday (October 5) with the intention of crossing the strait towards Spanish waters. The Calliope Guardamar vessel rescued the immigrants the same evening. With the exception of one woman showing signs of fever, the rest of the vessel’s occupants were in good health.

Friends of classic cars in Levante FEBRUARY 2008 saw a group of classic car enthusiasts come together with the plan to use their classic cars as often as possible in what can only be described as ideal conditions for open top motoring. Since then the group has flourished under Hans Horst and Harry Van Malder’s leadership,
growing to a size of almost 30 members, most of who participate regularly in classic car runs around the local area. Sometimes the runs take the fleet a bit further afield with overnight hotel stays. The club is very European, with members from Belgium, France, Greece, Holland, Spain and the United Kingdom.
New signs for Arboleas ARBOLEAS residents and visitors can now find their way around the municipality more easily since the installation of a number of new information signs. The signs are being placed in various parts of the town. Mayor of Arboleas, Cristobal Garcia, said: “Everything is aiming to ensure that we project an image of a quality Arboleas.”
The cars are predominantly British and European sports cars from the 1950s to the 1980s. In many cases the cars have been lovingly restored by their owners. Members meet in Aguilas at 3pm on the Thursday of each month. The aim of the club is to keep it active and find new areas to explore as well as encourage new members to join. With this in mind, the club would like to hear from any other classic car owners keen to get involved. Your car needs to be 25 years of age or older, and comply with Spanish laws. GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a man in Garrucha for distribution and sale of cocaine in an operation named Papi. The officers investigated the activities which involved the distribution and sale of cocaine in a method known as Tele-Coca. The officers seized 55 grammes of cocaine in measured doses for distribution and rock form, €34,000 in cash, two mobile phones, two weighing scales and other apparatus related to the activity. LAGT, a 66-year-old resident of Garrucha was arrested as part of the investigation. The drugs were found concealed in a vent in the bathroom of the property. The detainee has a background of similar crimes.

Police intercept drugs convoy POLICE in Almeria have intercepted a convoy of vehicles transporting thousands of kilos of hashish. In the early hours of Wednesday October 1, National Police officers seized a vast quantity of hashish - 1,245 kilos to be exact - in a drug haul which also involved the arrest of four people. The four men - one German and three Moroccans - attempted to maximise their chances
of success by using various vehicles to transport the drugs in a convoy. Investigations began last April thanks to a tipoff made by a member of the public informing the police of a gang based in El Alquián, Almeria, which was trafficking drugs in the area. Detectives succeeded in identifying the owner of two vans and a number of other vehicles used to transport the
drugs. Getting word of plans to move a large quantity of hashish, the police set up a checkpoint on the A-92 motorway near Viator, and managed to intercept four vehicles and the four men transporting the drugs between them. With the drugs seized along with the four vehicles and a motorcycle, the four men have been remanded in custody in order to await trial.
Marihuana haul OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil seized 35 plants and arrested six people for offences against public health. Guardia Civil officers have arrested six people between the ages of 25 and 55, residents of Balerma and Matagorda
in El Ejido. The people are suspected of various offences against public health as part of an ongoing investigation into security, smuggling and retail distribution of narcotics in western Almeria. The marihuana plants
were located in Cañada Villegas hamlet in the municipality of Balerma and in Rambla de Loco also in Balerma. The investigation remains open and the Guardia Civil told Euro Weekly News they are not ruling out further arrests.
Almeria liable ALMERIA City is liable according to the CCA (Consultative Council of Almeria) for a motorcycle accident in which the victim has claimed more than €36,400 in damages.
Hospital protest HUERCAL OVERA has announced a second demonstration against the closure of hospital beds. Demonstrators will meet at 6pm on October 14 outside the hospital before walking the streets.
Photo winner SAN FERNANDO school in Adra has won second place in a national photography competition for its image entitled ‘For Peace.’ The prize will be collected in Madrid in November.
Missing boat off Alboran MARITIME rescue are searching for a boat with 50 immigrants on board close to the island of Alboran. The search was activated after a call which alerted emergency services to a boat that left Al Hoceima in Morocco. Maritime rescue launched two boats and two aircraft to look for the boat. During the search, Maritime Rescue located another boat with 25 Moroccan men on board, but the search for the original vessel continues.

Now, 24 weeks later, and the shows are over, the reviews are positive, and the smiles on the cast and crew’s faces are proof of the success of the show’s run. The shows were performed in Los Gallardos and in Arboleas to the delight of the attendees.
On September 29 the group gathered for an after show lunch, and provided an opportunity for everyone to share their favourite memories, thank the supporting spouses and enjoy great conversation over food and drink. The accounts are still being finalised as sponsorship money and collection tins are still being counted, but the organisers will let Euro Weekly News know
the final collected amount very soon. The group’s director, Janet Franklin, and everyone involved with the show, would like to thank those who attended and provided support. Several of the shows were sold out and have received excellent feedback. Proceeds from the shows will go to Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion in recognition of 2014 being the centenary of the start of WW1.

HE No means No campaign has advanced into the arena of the Marbella International Film Festival this past week. 15 arrested for fraud in Almeria N A T I O N A L P O L I C E officers in Almeria have arrested 15 people and charged 20 others in an investigation focused around two fake companies. The investigation, called ‘Runner,’ which is part of
research to uncover alleged fraud, was carried out by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security and the Ministry of Interior in the fight against illegal employment and social security fraud. The companies are

Grisly bus discovery GUARDIA CIVIL has opened an investigation after the discovery of a fetus on a bus line that runs between Almeria and Barcelona. Officers have revealed that the fetus was found by staff as they cleaned the on-board toilet. Specifically, the fetus was found in the waste collection tank. The find was reported immediately to the Guardia Civil which has started immediate investigations. However, the bus makes frequent stops because the journey takes between 15 and 16 hours. The body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Almeria where it will undergo a post-mortem examination.

Help for Rita concert a massive success HELP FOR RITA’S concert has been hailed a massive success and the organisers would like to thank everyone involved. Many readers will already be aware of the horrendous accident that Rita, at that time Treasurer of Helping Hands, suffered in July 2013 whilst assisting another local charity, San Animal Santuario, in a cat sterilisation programme. After almost a whole year in various hospitals and rehabilitation centres Rita is now back in Spain. She now has tetraplegia with very limited movement in her arms, and requires a lot of help with everyday life doing things that many of us take for granted.

CONCERT: A good crowd gathered to enjoy the night. Escuela Municipal de Baile de Pulpi began with an amazing display of dance and were followed by vocalist Kay Frances from Antas who also performed with Julie Bruce Zumba Almeria later in the evening. Singer songwriter Alex Scott had travelled down the coast to support the
event and his talent, at a relatively young age, was demonstrated as he sang several of his own songs whilst on the guitar. Next was Steve Fisher who had the audience on their feet with his Rod Stewart tribute. JJ Jones, who has been the ultimate Neil Diamond Tribute for some 20 years, then gave his usual superb performance. The finale featured Simon Patrick, winner of the European Elvis Tribute Awards, who had every-one up and dancing. The night ended with artists and Helping Hands team members combining with their rendition of
‘Lean on me.’ Helping Hands would like to extend their thanks to all who took part in making the concert a success, including Juan Bautista Lopez, Audrey Vollans, Michelle Miles, Malcolm Rushton and all the performers. These people gave their valuable time, skills, donations and effort in the planning of the event. The event organisers would also like to thank
everyone who got involved and helped to raise funds. The proceeds from the concert total €2,500 but pledges and donations are still coming in, so they will announce the final total once available. Helping Hands helps organisations and the needy in Spain. They have a charity shop in Aguilas, more than 50 animals in their care and regularly organise fundraising events.

Consum opens in El Ejido CONSUM has opened a new supermarket in the basement of Circulo Cultural y Recreativo in El Ejido. This is the fifth Consum store in Almeria, is number 16 in Andalucia, and employs 25 people. The 1,200 square metre store is open from 9am until 9.30pm Monday to Saturday. There is parking for 50 vehicles. The store includes fish and meat counters, a fruit and vegetable section where customers can select and weigh their own produce, an in-store bakery, plus a perfumery and a wide range of general grocery items. Customers can also place orders for home delivery within the area.

Killer perhaps knew victim NATASHA P, who was found in a pool of blood by her daughter in early September 2014, is thought to be connected to her killer. National Police have issued an international arrest warrant for the suspected killer who is currently in a Lithuanian prison. Judicial sources have indicated that this warrant follows one of the lines of enquiry into the death of Natasha. Natasha’s body was
discovered by her daughter, who had given birth just a few weeks previously, after the bakery telephone had remained unanswered. A police gag order still remains over the incident while investigations continue. Residents in the town suggested at the time that Natasha knew her aggressor although National Police have so far left that line of enquiry unanswered.

Perez Siquier exhibition TEATRO DE HUERCAL OVERA is hosting an exhibition by Perez Siquier which focuses on the area of La Chanca in the town. The exhibition runs until October 30 and features more than 80 photographs, captured in black and white, from 1956 to 1960. The photographs give the view of the area at that time by the photographer. The opening ceremony was attended by the councillor for Culture, Antonio Lazaro, the councillor of Commerce, Monica Navarro, and the museum’s director, Juan Manuel Martin.

Lubrin’s peace shattered LUBRIN is a small quiet village sitting high in the Sierra de los Filabres. The village began as a medieval settlement but gradually became a tranquil enclave of charm and tradition. It is a typical rural village set in the heart of Andalucia, with most of its small population working in agriculture and livestock rearing and of course almonds and olives. Lubrin has some interesting architecture with the Parish Church de la Virgen de Rosario, built in the 19th century. The peace and quiet of this pretty place was shattered by the arrival of a bunch of Hashers who took over the terrace of the bar Las Delicias overlooking the village. After coffee and chats and renewed friendships the circle was formed in the road. Way marks and trails were explained by the hares before everyone set off. The runners were observed doing hardly any running as the first part of the trail was uphill. The walkers continued down roads and tracks into a rambla, It was there that one hasher was deemed a ‘winker’ and to cap that,

HASHERS RELAX: The walkers and runners retired to the bar for tapas and beer. on the return into the outskirts of the village the walkers came across a couple of ‘swingers.’ After ascending a steep incline the walkers arrived back at the starting point followed by the runners from the opposite direction looking pretty shattered
from their experience. Refreshments were given and the circle was formed where the usual punishments were administered. After the songs were sung the runners and walkers retired to the bar for a healthy diet of tapas and more

We leave summer behind, but the happy memories of splashing and frolicking in the pool, or simply lying stretched-out in the middle on a lilo, will stay with us. Sadly issues surrounding pool safety were thrown sharply into focus when the tragic death of a two-year-old boy occurred in a neighbour’s swimming pool on the Costa del Sol last August. It was terrible news to have to report, and at the Euro Weekly News we want to help raise awareness of pool safety to ensure that the risks of such a tragedy happening again are minimised. We know how difficult it is for parents to keep an eye on their children 24 hours a day and accidents can happen in a flash: be it during the summer months or winter. As we have stressed before, installing a pool safety fence will give pool-owners peace of mind. In winter, with lounging around the pool a

Flight attendant jailed for tobacco smuggling A FLIGHT attendant has been jailed for carrying out a €230,000 tobacco smuggling operation between the UK and Spain. Dennis Connolly has been handed a 21month jail sentence for masterminding a cigarette smuggling operation by using his staff discount privileges to pay for flights. The easyJet flight attendant was heavily in debt after he took to online gambling to deal with the grief of losing his boyfriend to pancreatic cancer in 2007. Connolly employed a variety of people to travel to destinations around Spain and Portugal for day trips and short breaks. He then gave information on the rotation of customs officials to the smugglers working for him, so that they could sneak the cigarettes back into the UK. The cigarettes would then be sold at bargain prices on the British Black Market,
and as no Customs Duty had been paid on the tobacco, Connolly was able to make a profit. All in all, it is thought that Connolly smuggled 1,000 kilos of tobacco into the UK, avoiding €230,000 in duty over a three-year period. The law caught-up with the flight attendant last April when three of his smugglers were stopped at customs with a large quantity of cigarettes in their suitcases. The tickets that the three men were travelling with were linked back to Connolly’s flight bookings. As an employee of easyJet, he was able to purchase a large quantity of tickets on the cheap. Connolly admitted to having committed the crimes of ‘conspiracy to evade duty’ and ‘possession of criminal property’ at Manchester Crown Court, and was jailed for 21 months by the judge.

Spanish nurse in Madrid tests positive for the Ebola virus A SPANISH NURSE has tested positive for the Ebola Virus after coming into contact with infected missionary Manuel García Viejo. And now her husband has been admitted to hospital for observation as a high risk case. The auxiliary nurse tested positive for the deadly virus after displaying symptoms including a high fever. Although the initial
medical analysis tested positive, the nurse will now undergo further testing to confirm whether or not she has the virus for sure. The husband of the stricken nurse - the first case of Ebola to be contracted and diagnosed in Europe - is isolated in quarantine and will be observed, although he is still not displaying any symptoms.
Two others have also been put under quarantine: a man who has recently returned from a trip to Nigeria, and another nurse who does not have a fever, but is displaying symptoms including diarrhoea. A total of 52 other hospital workers are also being closely watched for symptoms of the disease. The infected nurse, who works at Madrid’s Carlos III hospital, treated priest Manuel García Viejo, who was flown to the Spanish capital from Sierra Leone. García Viejo died of the virus on

Suspected of killing children A MAN from Ubrique in Cadíz is being sought on suspicion of murdering his two children. The victims were found dead at a house in Ubrique after a 112 call was made at around 5.00am.
Response units from the Guardia Civil, Local Police and the fire department found the lifeless body of a 22-year-old woman lying in the street outside the house. The body of the deceased’s 16-year-old

the murderer may well have been their own father, who fled the scene. At the time of going to press the Guardia Civil were combing the area in an attempt to find the suspect. The man is thought to have lived in the house with his two children since the death of their mother just over a year ago after a battle with a serious illness. According to sources, an argument was heard by neighbours, prompting a call to emergency services.

Fireman tries to bring puppy back to life A FIREMAN in Sagunto, Valencia, was caught on film bringing a puppy back from the dead. A video clip has been doing the rounds on social media channels since Wednesday, October 1. The clip shows fireman Carlos Arana give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a two-month-old Yorkshire Terrier puppy after rescuing it from a house fire in Sagunto. As the video shows, Arana performed CPR for more than three minutes on the lifeless puppy, and after chest compressions and an oxygen mask failed to reanimate the little dog, Arana can be seen bringing the puppy round with the kiss of life. A fellow firefighter, Cristobel Jover Badia, caught the incident on camera. He said: “Carlos grabbed the puppy and ran outside where he started pumping its chest. “The poor little thing was

Catalonia. It was a premeditated act carried out to smear the reputation of the monarchy, said the National Court. Though Guifre Peguera (23) and Jordi Nogue (24) admitted to having participated in the nonauthorised demonstration mounted back in 2013, their defence counsel argued the defendants only burned the picture to criticise the monarchy and that they never intended to insult or disparage the Spanish monarchy, since no slogans were chanted at the time nor was a manifesto read during the demonstration, which was not against the crown, he said. Nevertheless, the judge did not see it that way and ruled they had indeed sought to insult the monarchy, especially by turning the King’s picture upside down.
Spain violates the law SPAIN has violated international law by extraditing a man facing torture, according to a UN ruling. It refers to the extradition of a Moroccan-Belgian man, Ali Aarrass, to Morocco in November 2010. Charged with terrorist offences, Aarrass appealed to the UN’s Human Rights Committee fearing he would be tortured on arrival in Morocco. According to the ruling reached by the UN’s Human Rights Committee, Spain broke the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) by extraditing the terror suspect to Morocco when there was a possibility that Aarrass would face torture once there.

Those who appealed received nothing while their claims were processed, paving the way for reassessments when land prices were at their highest.

HILE I was working in the Middle East some time ago I noticed that a friend of mine living there always had a brand new swanky car every single year. This particular man ran an organic food supermarket and café and he was so ‘green’ that he actually charged his mobile phone by connecting it to a type of pump, on which he jumped up and down and the energy he created powered his phone! Therefore I was naturally

drove up to the meeting in a shiny new car, his prospective business partners had more respect for him and he made a better deal. Superficial, isn’t it? But the same thing is happening on European shores too. According to a recent news report, many businesses are advising their staff, not on the car
they drive, but on their appearance in the workplace and telling them that a sharp look can help improve their career. A famous Swiss bank has a 44-page dress-code document drafted up on everything from appropriate underwear to the importance of regular haircuts. While a wellknown accountancy firm
reminds new recruits of the importance of appearance, stressing that people make up their mind about them in just 30 seconds. Research from a UK psychology professor clearly shows that what a person wears has a big impact on others’ impressions of them and on their subsequent career opportunities. She says women whose work wear is ‘slightly provocative’ are judged to be less competent and therefore less likely to get promoted. While, a man in an off-the-shelf suit is judged as less successful and less flexible than his counterpart who wears a tailor-made suit. As shallow as all this does appear, the unfortunate truth is that we live in a very imageobsessed world and how we present ourselves on the surface probably does drive other people’s opinions of us and our potential.

Ratings war FITCH Ratings placed Cataluña and the Institut Catala de Finances (ICF) on Rating Watch Negative (RWN). The ratings agency warned that as the region will probably need access to the regional liquidity fund (FLA) next year, its bonds would risk being downgraded to junk status without the national government’s support.
Make-up on the up SPAIN’S cosmetics sector had a €646 million turnover last year, 0.6 per cent more than in 2012 and an accumulated 13.36 per cent since 2006. Andalucia spent €110 million last year on cosmetics, more than any other Spanish region while La Rioja, with an outlay of just €2 million spent the least.

Clever at their trade, they are hopeless at business management, which is a wholly different calling. The business owner’s skills are far different from those working on the shop floor. Car dealership owners likely have difficulty changing a spark plug. Often the restaurateur is hopeless in the kitchen whilst famous name authors are useless at writing. Football fans agree that many team managers are incapable of physically playing football. Home improvement companies employ salesmen who haven’t the foggiest idea what a Phillips screwdriver is. Where the successful business owner does succeed is in successful team management. I have done both. As a salesman I was consistently the top

performer, at team management I was an also ran. Those who cannot recruit, select, train, inspire, lead and manage a team will never run a successful business. Business owners whose attitude is, ‘if you want a job doing properly do it yourself,’ can never compete against a rival’s well-managed team. I fall into this category. I used my wife to hire and fire. Such is the difference between shop floor and sales that occasionally it is necessary to cross no-man’s land. I recall being interviewed by a pathway
and patio installation marketing company. Salesmen were advised to visit clients wearing cords and body warmers rather than suits. This was to create the illusion that they were familiar with managing the task. Instead of focusing on running your business turn your attention instead to effectively managing your staff. Each has a task; encourage, empathise and reward them. Delegate and use the strengths of each individual where they are likely to be most effective. A people person is best with clients; great at the counter, reception or in sales. Those lacking personality best put them out of sight. If a family or staff member is creative then let them help with marketing. Successful business management means putting round pegs in round holes, square pegs in square holes.

Adding fuel to the winter payment fire I FULLY agree with the Editor regarding the heating allowance. Bus passes, television licences, rent and rates rebate should be abolished and pensioners should receive a liveable state pension. As my late mother-in-law said: “I don’t need these payments, just give me a decent pension.” Of course this would create redundancies in the civil service and local government, a cost the central government might wish to avoid. Spain, they say, is a hot country so you don’t need the allowance. How is it that the mountains are covered in snow in winter? Madrid isn’t exactly boiling hot in winter and neither is most of northern Spain. Who is kidding who? Let us have our vote back and a reasonable pension. After all, we did pay taxes during our working lives so now let’s enjoy the benefits of our labours. Robert Peake, Mijas Pueblo (Malaga)
Not viable THE winter fuel allowance is a nonsense and should end. Pension credits are available for those who need them and other benefits exist. The Editor’s conclusions are illogical: the UK may be a wealthy country but it can’t afford the drugs and health service that keep us alive until we can’t walk or talk. It then nurses us to an end that is unsatisfactory in quality of life and they pay us bigger pensions. We are at a point where half the population work for money. The other half, in education or retired, are supported by those working and supplemented by savings. Pension schemes are based upon workers contributing but nearly half of workers’ pay is removed by taxes and national insurance. It is foolish economics and populist nonsense to say “Pensioners deserve better.” Pensioners have to realise they have already had a chance to earn and save and many have huge assets in their possessions.

State pensions have to be a safety net, not a salary by right. Sixty per cent of the world’s population is in dire poverty yet many of them put away up to 20 per cent in savings to help pay for schooling, health and care for their elderly family members. Pampered western cultures have to cut back on quality of life, meaning excessive benefits, high tax, superb healthcare, generous infrastructure and help for all those in need. Then they can afford to help others around the world who are vastly worse off although some economies are catching up. We in Europe have about 5 per cent of the world’s population and 25 per cent of its wealth. That is changing fast and we shall have to tighten our belts for a long time yet. nasty experiences on flights, some years ago four of us took a flight to Cyprus from Gatwick in London. Twenty minutes into the flight, the captain announced that we had to return to Gatwick for technical reasons. As we came in to land we were followed by two fire engines either side! The passengers remained absolutely quiet, without a titter. We waited for five hours before we took off again but were told that our luggage would follow on another flight. When we finally got it next day, the cases were slightly damp.

Lights out I AM writing in reference to the absolutely dreadful service we encounter all too often here in Spain. Our community of 22 dwellings was left without electricity after a storm and as I didn’t have the community account information, which is kept by our administrators, I got the reply that Endesa were unable to help. It took four phone calls, the last one from the electrician we often use, and six-and-a-half hours for Endesa to sort this problem out. As the storms raged on we woke up to the same problem, although after only three phone calls and three hours waiting, the electricity came back on. It was a very frustrating situation as Endesa seemed incapable of identifying where we were located and kept telling me

there was no problem. To say they were unhelpful would be an understatement: they simply didn’t appear to care that 22 houses were without electricity! Anne-Marie Savastano (by email)
Ludo torture I READ with interest a story in the online edition of the Euro Weekly News. It described the indignation of a group of friends fined for playing ‘parchis’ in Malaga town square after midnight. Well done, Local Police! I would like each of those doughty officers to receive a commendation if not a medal. This cut-throat version of ludo should be played in a soundproof room or preferably a padded cell. I also believe a fine of €101 each was far too lenient if, as Euro Weekly News revealed, they were playing for three hours. No wonder there were complaints as these fanatics rattled their dice in that horrid little cup and scatter them noisily on the board until 2am. In the days when I lived in a seafront apartment an entire summer was made unbearable by a family of Madrileños who spent all night, every night playing ‘parchis.’ I only wish I’d had the nerve to ring the police as the Malaga residents did. They never learn MORE PEOPLE have been killed and massacred in the name of God due to organised religion than anything else. It’s only logical true believers in a spiritual deity wouldn’t normally murder their fellow human beings although throughout history the same contradictory mistakes were repeated in order to benefit one religion or another. All religions are organisations and structures conceived by human beings, with their intrinsic faults and defects. Personally, I prefer the Golden Rule, which never fails: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Why is this simple Rule so difficult to apply and practice? Taking a lead from Saudi… A
LTHOUGH all rather macabre, I did find the highly media covered reenactment of the two alleged murders of the Thai backpackers, pretty riveting this week. It was actually not the first time I had observed this practice of public demonstration by criminal perpetrators. I remember on one occasion, while watching extremely boring Saudi Television, the programme was suddenly interrupted by a voice informing us that two Filipinos had confessed to the particularly vicious rape and murder of a Saudi man and wife. The scene then opened in the bedroom of the unfortunate victims. The accused then proceeded to reenact the whole sordid series of events. At the close of the action the men, in full close up, confessed to both murders. The following Friday, after prayers, they chopped off their heads in the market square. Job done. These men bore no apparent marks or signs of any form of torture and frankly, in this latest incident, these two men would, in my opinion, need to have been under the direction of Carl Foreman and possess

Well all I can say to that is I’ve never actually ever lived in China, but I certainly have a good idea what’s going on over there. Also what’s afoot in North Korea, Libya, Australia, and Afghanistan etc. In this day and age the plight of the whole world is at our fingertips dear reader. Thanks for your interest. Keep ‘em coming. LORD ALAN SUGAR has revealed that The Apprentice will return with a double bill on October 14 and 15. Announcing the date on Twitter, Lord Sugar confirmed that he, Nick Hewer and Karren Brady would begin their new search in a couple of weeks, with a 10th anniversary special celebrating memorable moments from previous series also announced. “Warm up for the new series of Apprentice with a 10-year special containing classic moments and characters,” Lord Sugar told followers, before confirming that it would air on Monday, October 13 at 11.35pm (CET) on BBC One.
DAILY BRUNCH: Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer will be hosts.

Lord Sugar later confirmed the 10th series would kick off the following night with a two-part opener, before then continuing weekly on Wednesday nights. Scientists boost the benefits of radiotherapy A NEW treatment could improve the ability of radiotherapy to save the lives of cancer patients. Scientists in the UK at the University of Manchester have discovered the reason why radiotherapy treatment does not always work and have found a way to improve its success. More than half of cancer patients are treated with

radiotherapy, which kills tumour cells, but some cells become resistant to the treatment and can grow into new tumours. Following research, the scientists say this is because of a protein called PD-L1 which forms a ‘molecular shield’ around some cancer cells preventing them from being destroyed.
BRONCHITIS: Characterised by its cough.
WITH the arrival of autumn and the return to schools and nurseries, bronchitis is more prevalent in children than ever. The disease, characterised by its cough, affects 80 per cent of children in the first two years of life and results in the most hospitalisations of children up to the age of 14 above other diseases such as tonsillitis, appendicitis and gastroenteritis. In the last 10 years more than 63,000 children have been admitted to health centres with the condition. However, despite the high incidence of the disease, health officials say there has been a significant improvement in mortality data (decreased by almost 30 per cent) and the average stay in hospital has fallen and currently stands at 5.6 days.

OTHING is happening in Cataluña that wasn’t expected. It’s all illegal: the law passed by the Catalan parliament to enable the November 9 independence ballot is illegal and so was the subsequent ballot announcement. Spain’s ultimate court, the Constitutional Tribunal has said so; Spain’s State Council said so and so has Spain’s president Mariano Rajoy. Cataluña’s pro-independence faction forged ahead despite knowing what was going to happen. It looks suspiciously as though they were inviting the November 9 veto to underline Cataluña’s martyrdom at the hands of the rest of Spain. Not all Catalans are separatists and not all are anti-Spanish but a large proportion of them are anti-Spanish government. Given the chance to vote on November 9 many of the pro-independence votes would be punishment votes, just as David Cameron feared before the Scottish ballot. “Don’t vote ‘yes’ just to give the effing Tories a kicking,” he pleaded beforehand.

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride WAS Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, Spain’s former Justice minister handed a poisoned chalice? Formerly popular Ruiz-Gallardon never lost an election; he was Madrid’s regional president during three terms and mayor of Madrid for another two. He was always ambitious and always wanted the Big One, as Mariano Rajoy was well aware, keeping him out of national politics for as long as possible. Naming him Justice minister in 2011 was logical, but giving him abortion
reform, which should have been a Health ministry responsibility, was not. Mariano Rajoy knew every step of the way the direction that the new Bill was taking and possibly misjudged popular feeling regarding abortion. The law was obviously withdrawn as a vote-loser but that withdrawal also facilitated RuizGallardon’s downfall and exit. Two birds, one stone.
Fine piece of China RUIZ-GALLARDON’S Universal Justice law was also unpopular for ruffling the feelings of Spanish judges by curtailing their right to pursue Human Rights cases outside Spain. One such case, now abandoned, was an attempt by high court judge Ismael Moreno to prosecute China’s former president and prime minister about the part both men played in genocide in Tibet. Beijing reacted by threatening trade reprisals and the chastened Spanish government hurriedly reacted by bringing in the Universal Justice law. Mariano Rajoy recently returned from China having signed agreements worth €3.15 billion: mission accomplished.
Get the record straight CATALUÑA’S former president Jordi Pujol recently addressed the regional parliament to explain why he salted away an undeclared multimillion inheritance from his father in foreign tax havens. Conceding that this was worthy of criticism, the 84year-old who was Cataluña’s president for 23 years, claimed that he was never a corrupt politician. But no-one was asking about politics and there is nothing more incriminating than making excuses for something you’re not accused of.

There are many kennels on the coast some are well run and licensed, others are not. Often I receive calls from owners complaining when they collect their pets from kennels they look thin, it’s always best to take your own food and of course medication.
I always recommend you DON’T BOOK UNTIL YOU LOOK. If a kennel will not allow you to look around, then go somewhere else since they may have something to hide. Looking at email clients… HELLO and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. While checking my email this morning as I do every morning / lunchtime / teatime, it dawned on me that I have had many people come to me and ask how to organise their emails, keep spam (not the meat - if you can call it that) at bay and have an easy time doing it. Is it better to go to your email website and process your emails there or to have an email client that will download them for you and, when properly set up, organise them into their proper place and filter out the rubbish. It is true that these email providers do have filters put in place to remove what they

consider to be junk, and are usually quite good at finding the Viagra adverts and the ‘Hey I’m new in town and want to meet you’ type of nonsense. Experience has shown me that these providers are not perfect at filtering correctly, that is to say lost job opportunities and important family information has been accidentally marked as junk and I have never received it. My suggestion is quite simply this. Continue to
go to these email providers ‘Gmail,’ ‘Hotmail,’ ‘Outlook’ and many others. Check what they have put into your Junk folder and mark it all as ‘Not Junk.’ I can almost hear the cries of ‘Oh No’ but be patient and you will be told of a much easier and safer way of doing it in the following articles. It is in my own interest to NEVER give you bad advice, there are enough computer ‘experts’ out here who just don’t have a clue which makes my job many times harder! PIT STOP: Fire destroyed four vehicles at the garage.
Oria garage fire FIRE has destroyed four vehicles at a British garage close to Oria. Emergency services attended the scene at Pit Stop on Thursday night. The fire started in one vehicle and spread to three more. Steve Jones, one of the business partners,
said: “It was raining and the vans were empty, so it’s unlikely that a fire could have started accidentally.” The garage is in its fifth year of trading and Steve described 2014 as their best yet. If you have any information, please contact the Guardia Civil in Oria or the garage.
Petition for transparency in Albox TWELVE months ago the 15-M movement in Albox requested information in writing from the town council regarding their management of Albox water. In response to the silence they have received, the movement have set up a petition on Change.org. They have asked the mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, to “publish and provide access to all documentation
related to the water supply in Albox so that all residents can assess the management of their politicians.” They have requested information including what work is performed and by whom, at what prices, what is the breakdown of the invoices, what is the current water quality and on what dates sampling is carried out.

Improvements for Albox ALBOX is to benefit after the signing of a contract with Almeria Province for a financial boost of â‚Ź182,200 for town improvements. The improvements project was signed between Gabriel Amat, head of the Partido Popular for Andalucia, and the contractor Pablo Rodriguez Con-
strucciones. The project will take care of improvements to pipelines for water supply and sanitation, as well as pavements repairs. Also included is work on a square on Calle Barranco and repairs to the pavements on San Antonio and Carril streets.

HO do you trust? Politicians? Bankers? The police? Trust is now at an all time low for many, mainly due to those at the top who have let the rest of us down. After all, haven’t most of us been economical with the truth at some point? “Nice outfit” tends to work better than “you look a bit chubby in that.” Not to mention: “That’s odd because you were definitely on the guest list!” Or: “I’ve had a few problems with my email - must be the server!” According to a recent study, 60 per cent of people lied at least once during a 10 minute conversation. Unsurprisingly, men lie differently from women, tending to lie ‘upwards’ (‘earn more,’ are ‘taller’)

HOME MORTGAGES: There were 18,107 home loans signed in July.
Home mortgages July upturn HOME mortgages registered a 28.8 per cent increase in July over the same month in 2013. Data released by the National Statistics Institute on Friday September 26 show that the number of new home mortgages increased in July for the second month in a row, with 18,107 home loans signed. The figure represents a 28.8 per cent increase over the same month last year and a 19 per cent increment month-over-month. The positive trend is due to an
improvement in the housing market and to the reopening of credit, according to experts. The average value of home mortgages in July was €100,866, 0.3 per cent less year-over-year, while the capital loaned registered a 28.5 per cent increase over 2013 (€1.8 million). Compared to June, home mortgages grew by 5.7 per cent, the most substantial increment registered in five years. Moreover, the amount of capital loaned also
took an 8.1 per cent upturn during July, the sharpest since 2010. The number of mortgaged homes, however, dropped by 9.4 per cent between January and July year-over-year despite the increment in mortgages, with an 8.2 per cent decrease in the capital loaned and an 1.3 per cent upturn in the average mortgage value. The highest number of home mortgages in July was registered in Andalucia (3,324), Madrid (3,247) and Catalonia (2,878).
Madrid region puts housing policies in place to help those families in need MADRID has allocated a total of 201 houses to families with difficulties. Borja Carabante, Vice Counsellor for Transport, Infrastructures and Housing, has announced the initiative whilst handing the apartment keys to a couple in Alcorcon, south of

Madrid. Carabante stated that: “the goal is to help families have a second chance since the region is aware of the financial radical change that many families have suffered in a very short period of time.” For the new apartment dwellers, Priscila and
Javier, this represents the opportunity to start a new life. “We had the eviction order to leave the apartment on September 11 and had to leave. When they phoned us we felt tremendously happy and grateful. We have to move in again but this time we will do it with a smile on our face.” On the other hand, the Vice Counsellor has also confirmed that the council continues applying their social policies through relocation. “We are going to relocate 11 families from the Ventorro de la Puñala shanty neighbourhood. “We are planning to finish the whole relocation
programme by the end of the year which will mean the dismantling of all historical shanty areas in Madrid City.” Carabante has explained that the programme begins with the relocation and continues with the total reinsertion of these families with their new neighbours. To achieve this, the Relocation and Social Integration Institute works with the families for years in order to ensure they fully integrate into society. “In some cases, these individuals do not have a proof of identification and, very often, are analphabetic,” remarked Carabante.

Honda reveals the prototype of new Urban SUV for Europe HONDA has revealed its new urban SUV for Europe, which made its world premiere at the 2014 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris. The HR-V is Honda’s new entry into Europe’s fast-growing small SUV segment. Andalucían Lawn Bowls Championships ALMOST 150 members of the Federación Andaluza de Bolos took part in this year’s championships held in Almeria Province. The games were held at Almeria, Mojácar and Indalo Bowling clubs with the majority of the matches being held at Indalo. Months of planning had gone into this six day tournament and after the fantastic weather that Spain had been experiencing over the summer months it just had to break right that week. The whole of the play on Saturday was rained off as the greens were flooded and this meant a real headache for the organisers having to reschedule all of the remaining matches ‘on the hoof’ as it were. A decision was made to cut the Mixed Rinks and the Pairs down to 12 ends instead of 18 and with a lot of hard work they managed to get all the games in. THE 19th Hole GS ventured up the A7 to the Lorca Golf Resort to play a four and three ball Texas Scramble. It soon became clear that it was to be a competition between two sets of Texas Banditos. First surprise
was the team of Terry Caddick, John Ball, Alan Chippendale and Mick Crasswell returning to the club house with a brilliant net 60, 11 under par and smug looks on faces, fully expecting to achieve first place with such a
good score. However Nigel Greenwood’s team of Nick Pogson, Gary Hammer and David White had other ideas returning a net 59.
