A €26m cash boost THE Central Government is to allocate more than €26 million to the Axarquia. According to figures from the General State Budget (PGE), recently made public by the Ministry of the Treasury and Public Administrations, the Axarquia is to be allocated more than €26 million in 2015. Killer is sentenced to six years at a mental hospital A MAN is to serve a six-year sentence for killing a mentally-disabled patient. A Malaga Court sentenced the man to six years at a mental hospital for killing a patient from the Velez Malaga Mental Disability Centre where both used to live. According to the court’s final ruling, the defendant “took advantage of the victim’s physical and mental deterioration.” The victim fell to the ground hitting his head on the pavement and the defendant started to

hit him and to stamp on his chest, which caused him internal injuries that resulted in his death the following day, said the court. Furthermore, the ruling states that the defendant was mentally handicapped at the time and displayed behavioural disorders which affected his intellect. The defendant is to spend the next six years at a mental institution. He is also to pay the victim’s family €10,000 in compensation.

Malaga’s fishing future concerns FISHERMEN in Malaga Province have grown increasingly concerned for their future, as fishing-ground closures force many to consider seeking other employment. It has been announced that up to five of the nine fishing grounds along Malaga’s coast may have to close, including the major fishing grounds off Velez. The closure of the Caleta de Velez was announced on Friday October 3 due to a red tide (a natural phenomenon caused by a large concentration of toxic

microorganisms), and despite promises of compensation, many fishermen feel that these days their losses simply outweigh their gains. The Junta de Andalucia regional government has said that compensation is available for fishermen whose areas are closed for a period of 21 days or more, but many have noted wryly that closed grounds ‘miraculously’ reopen after 18 or 19 days, thus denying fishermen the right to any compensation.

Vandals target town plants HUNDREDS of ornamental plants in Motril have fallen victim to vandalism. The vandals destroyed plants on Plaza de la Cruz Verde, Calles Seijas Lozano and Marques de Vistabella. It appears they also sabotaged a machine used to prune palm trees by pouring sand into its gas tank. Damages are valued at €400.

Deputy Mayor for Infrastructure Management Nicolas Navarro condemned the acts and said Motril Council had been fighting vandalism for more than two years with a campaign called ‘Quien rompe, paga’ (If you break it, you pay for it), which foresees fines of between €300 and €3,000 for people who sabotage street

furniture, and a television and radio campaign aiming at raising awareness about the cost of repairing damaged property. It is important for Motril residents to realise that street furniture and plants are part of the town’s assets and that everyone should respect them as if they were their own, said Navarro. Normally performed in August, this year there is a second chance to see what has been declared by Unesco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Held at the Basilica of Santa Maria, the play dates back to the 15th century and is a chanted drama that commemorates the Assumption of Mary. In even-numbered years there are extra ticketed performances on October 29 and 30, followed by free access on November 1. The play has lasted through to modern times despite the Council of Trento (1545-1563) banning

Petrol station noise angers local residents THE Public Prosecutor has asked for a six year prison sentence to be handed out to the manager of a petrol station charged with noise pollution. The petrol station’s manager is facing the possibility of a prison sentence because his carwash produces so much noise that local residents are being driven mad, with some even claiming to be suffering from depression as a direct result of the noise. With the noise above the accepted level, the prosecution has accused the manager of committing crimes against the environment which seriously endanger public health. Furthermore, the prosecution has accused the manager of causing two counts of personal injury to nearby residents. If convicted, the manager could face up to four years in prison as well as a 10-year ban on working within the industry and a fine of more than €9,000 in relation to the first charge, as well as one year in prison for each case of injury. Burning issue TWO Catalans have been fined €900 each for burning a portrait of the former King Juan Carlos I. The incident happened during a pro independence protest before the abdication. While not condoning the act, which may well have been taken as being insulting to many Royalists, it was still something that should be covered by freedom of expression. Disrespectful? Yes, but why should that be illegal? Surely the courts have better things to occupy their time with than this. The Royal Family is capable of looking after itself.

Winning wines AN Axarquia winery was awarded nine medals at the 20th National Wine Competition in Cordoba. “We are very pleased, because it is a recognition of the work we do as wineproducers,” said Juan Muñoz, manager of the Moclinejo-based Antonio Muñoz Cabrera Dimobe winery, which participated in the competition with 10 different wines. They walked away with seven gold medals, one silver and one bronze. Some of the wines awarded gold medals include Piamater 2013, Zumbral, Señorio de Broches 2013, Finca La Indiana 2010 and Arcos de Moclinejo Seco.

Mateo on at feria SPANISH pop singer Abraham Mateo will be one of the highlights of the Feria de Benamocarra. The teen star, 16, is scheduled to perform on Friday October 17. Tickets are available at Tiendas Base in Velez-Malaga, Torre del Mar and Nerja. Mateo recently cancelled a show at the Real Feria de San Miguel de Velez Malaga as he fell ill. Cleaning up shanties NERJA Town Council has removed 1,200 kilos of rubbish from two illegal settlements in an area known as Cuevas de Traqueones. Cleaners working for the council were assisted by Nerja’s Local Police force in a clean-up operation that took place early on Wednesday morning, October 1. Three trucks were needed to shift the rubbish, the majority of which came from one of the two settlements. The move comes as a continuation of a campaign to tidy up the area by removing or regulating the many different illegal shanty towns set up in

NEWS Sayalonga hosts cancer awareness campaign SAYALONGA is hosting until today (Thursday, October 9) a cancer awareness campaign. Organised by Malaga Provincial Council, Caravana de la Prevencion encourages people to change their habits for a healthier life as an effective way to prevent cancer, given the fact that anywhere between 75 and 80 per cent of cases can be linked to external factors. The campaign also focuses on the importance of sport and healthy eating habits to combat heart disease and obesity. It is estimated that more than 3,000 people in Malaga Province will benefit from it. The campaign has already visited Nerja and Velez Malaga and is scheduled to be in Sayalonga until today.

Flight attendant jailed for tobacco smuggling A FLIGHT attendant has been jailed for carrying out a €230,000 tobacco smuggling operation between the UK and Spain. Dennis Connolly has been handed a 21month jail sentence for masterminding a cigarette smuggling operation by using his staff discount privileges to pay for flights. The easyJet flight attendant was heavily in debt after he took to online gambling to deal with the grief of losing his boyfriend to pancreatic cancer in 2007. Connolly employed a variety of people to travel to destinations around Spain and Portugal for day-trips and short breaks. He then gave information on the rotation of customs officials to the smugglers working for him, so that they could sneak the cigarettes back into the UK. The cigarettes would then be sold at bargain prices on the British Black Market,

and as no customs duty had been paid on the tobacco, Connolly was able to make a profit. All in all, it is thought that Connolly smuggled 1,000 kilos of tobacco into the UK, avoiding €230,000 in duty over a three-year period. The law caught up with the flight attendant last April when three of his smugglers were stopped at Customs with a large quantity of cigarettes in their suitcases. The tickets that the three men were travelling with were linked back to Connolly’s flight bookings. As an employee of easyJet, he was able to purchase a large quantity of tickets on the cheap. Connolly admitted to having committed the crimes of ‘conspiracy to evade duty’ and ‘possession of criminal property’ at Manchester Crown Court, and was jailed for 21 months by the judge.

The investigation which led to the arrests came after the police learned that large amounts of cigarettes were being taken from a carport to an unidentified shop. While conducting a search of the premises, the officers seized 24,000 cigarette packages, valued at €100,000, and arrested the proprietor and his son. The other two tobacco smugglers were arrested as they were leaving a private residence with €159,000 in cash hidden in a bag. The police are currently trying to establish where the cigarettes come from and if the detainees are part of a larger criminal organisation.

Pruning time for palms ALMUÑECAR has started pruning its palm trees. It is a big operation with close to 8,000 palm trees located in the town centre, the seafronts and local beaches, said Environment Councillor Luis Aragon. “This year we started the campaign a few days later than usual to avoid causing inconvenience to the tourists enjoying the autumn weather,” said Aragon. The council has organised several teams to speed up the process as much as possible so that there is no ripe palm fruit littering the ground, on which pedestrians could potentially slip, he added. Work began in Puerta del Mar and San Cristobal, before moving on to Calle Guadix and adjacent streets.

Tragedy strikes in small Axarquia town TRAGEDY struck a small Axarquia town on Monday (October 6). A 62-year-old grandmother was killed and her nine-month-old granddaughter badly hurt when both fell down a lift shaft in Almachar. The accident occurred on Calle de la Constitucion at a building undergoing construction work. It appears that the grandmother and her 30-year-old daughter went to pay a visit to

some friends in the adjacent building with her grandchildren, a nine-month-old baby and a two-year-old boy. At some point the grandmother lost sight of the boy and went looking for him in the construction site with the baby in her arms. She reportedly failed to see the empty lift shaft and fell to her death. Realising what had happened, the daughter jumped down the shaft in an attempt to rescue them and was also injured. The baby was taken to Hospital de la Axarquia and then to a children’s hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit with head trauma. Pensioner drugged and robbed A PENSIONER in Rincon de la Victoria was drugged and had his watch stolen whilst he was sitting on his front porch. The 67-year-old-man fell victim to a robbery on September 1 when he was slipped a ‘date-rape’ drug, falling into a stupor and being left at the mercy of the criminals who administered it. In the event, the criminals stole the watch that the man was wearing on his wrist, valued at €4,000. Preferring to remain anonymous, the man said: “It was about 7 o’clock in the evening, and I was reading calmly on my front porch when between the railings I saw that a car was parked in front of the house. “The three occupants of

the car were gesturing at me to approach them. I got up and saw that the passenger had a map on his lap.” The man suspects that the paper map had been impregnated with the drug. He continued: “Then everything began to move so fast… the driver asked to have a look at my watch. I don’t know why I reacted the way I did, removing it and giving it to him. I remember seeing the watch fall onto the car seat before the driver slipped it into a black bag which he then gave to me. “I was unable to speak even one word. I took the bag and went back up to my house. When I opened it I saw that the watch inside was just a cheap

replica. “I was paralysed. My wife came out and after I told her what had happened we went together to report it to the Guardia Civil. I told them what had happened and they said that they had

received reports of similar incidents.” It appears that in September alone, at least three incidents of a similar nature were reported in Rincon de la Victoria. Last May the Diario Sur newpaper reported on a similar incident when a resident of Pedregalejo, Malaga, had his €16,000 Rolex watch and wallet taken from him.

They came to accept the extra donation of food, which was made possible after the funds raised during the Grand Charity Extravaganza on September 12. Parents let child miss school for six months A CRIMINAL court has sentenced a mother and father to three months of community service for allowing their child to miss 185 days of school. According to the final ruling, the parents failed to fully exercise their parental duties and unjustifiably let their child miss approximately six months of school during the 2011-2012 school year. The Valencia court concluded that they had contravened Article 226, 1 of the penal code, and were guilty of ‘family abandonment’, which normally carries a three-month prison sentence.

Father suspected of murder in Cadiz A MAN from Ubrique in Cadíz is being sought on suspicion of murdering his two children. The victims were found dead at a house in Ubrique after a 112 call was made to the emergency services at around 5am. Response units from the Guardia Civil, Local Police and the fire department found the lifeless body of a 20-year-old woman lying in the street outside the house. The body of the

that both victims were killed by a bladed weapon, and that the murderer may

According to sources, an argument was heard by neighbours, prompting the call to the emergency services.

UN rules Spain violated international law SPAIN has violated international law by extraditing a man facing torture, according to a UN ruling. It refers to the extradition of a MoroccanBelgian man, Ali Aarrass, to Morocco in November 2010. Charged with terrorist offences, Aarrass appealed to the UN’s Human Rights Committee fearing that he would be tortured on arrival in Morocco. According to the ruling reached by the UN’s Human Rights Committee, Spain broke the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) by extraditing the terror suspect to Morocco when there was a possibility he would face torture.

The committee agreed that Spain had failed to carry out its obligations to adhere to ICCPR protocols, despite being expressly told to halt extradition proceedings whilst Aarrass’s case was reviewed. Aarrass argued there was reliable evidence that if he was extradited he would be tortured, but the Spanish courts denied his appeal and the man’s extradition was approved on November 19, 2010. Reports claim that once in Morocco, Aarrass was subjected to torture, before being sentenced to 12 years in prison based on a confession obtained under torture.

Spanish nurse tests positive for Ebola A SPANISH NURSE has tested positive for the Ebola Virus after coming into contact with infected missionary Manuel García Viejo. And now her husband has been admitted to hospital for observation as a high risk case. The auxiliary nurse tested positive for the deadly virus after displaying symptoms including a high fever. Although the initial medical analysis tested positive, the nurse will now undergo further testing to confirm whether or not she has the virus for sure. Her husband - the first case of Ebola to be contracted and diagnosed in Europe - is isolated in quarantine and will be observed, although he is not displaying symptoms.

Two others have also been put under quarantine: a man who has recently returned from a trip to Nigeria, and another nurse who does not have a fever, but is displaying symptoms including diarrhoea. A total of 52 other hospital

workers are also being closely watched for symptoms of the disease. The infected nurse, who works at Madrid’s Carlos III hospital, treated priest Manuel García Viejo, who was flown to the Spanish capital from Sierra Leone.

García Viejo died of the virus on September 26. If the result is positive, she will be the third Ebola sufferer in Spain, the first to contract the virus on Spanish soil and the first case in its history of being contracted out of Africa.

The minister, who has contacted Spain’s foreign secretary said: “The irresponsible actions and dangerous manoeuvring of this vessel were not only unlawful, but also presented a significant risk to the safety of Royal Navy personnel at sea. “Under no circumstances should Spanish vessels be provoking a situation that could result in serious injury or a fatality. “The waters around Gibraltar are indisputably British.” And he added: “We will continue to take whatever action we consider necessary to uphold British sovereignty and the interests of Gibraltar, its people, its security and economy.” This is the latest in a series of strained relations between the two countries. In April, another research vessel entered the British waters, followed by a Spanish police boat. Any incursion into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters by Spain is considered an attempt to exert control and is seen by the British Government as a breach of UK Sovereignty. Gibraltar has belonged to Britain for over 300 years, but the Spanish would like to lay claim to the small populated rock.

HILE I was working in the Middle East some time ago I noticed that a friend of mine living there always had a brand new swanky car every single year. This particular man ran an organic food supermarket and café and he was so ‘green’ that he actually charged his mobile phone by connecting it to a type of pump, on which he jumped up and down and the energy he created powered his phone! Therefore I was naturally

drove up to the meeting in a shiny new car, his prospective business partners had more respect for him and he made a better deal. Superficial, isn’t it? But the same thing is happening on European shores too. According to a recent news report, many businesses are advising their staff, not on the car

they drive, but on their appearance in the workplace and telling them that a sharp look can help improve their career. A famous Swiss bank has a 44-page dress-code document drafted up on everything from appropriate underwear to the importance of regular haircuts. While a wellknown accountancy firm

reminds new recruits of the importance of appearance, stressing that people make up their mind about them in just 30 seconds. Research from a UK psychology professor clearly shows that what a person wears has a big impact on others’ impressions of them and on their subsequent career opportunities. She says women whose work wear is ‘slightly provocative’ are judged to be less competent and therefore less likely to get promoted. While, a man in an off-the-shelf suit is judged as less successful and less flexible than his counterpart who wears a tailor-made suit. As shallow as all this does appear, the unfortunate truth is that we live in a very imageobsessed world and how we present ourselves on the surface probably does drive other people’s opinions of us and our potential.

Ratings war FITCH Ratings placed Cataluña and the Institut Catala de Finances (ICF) on Rating Watch Negative (RWN). The ratings agency warned that as the region will probably need access to the regional liquidity fund (FLA) next year, its bonds would risk being downgraded to junk status without the national government’s support.

Football fans agree that many team managers are incapable of physically playing football. Home improvement companies employ salesmen who haven’t the foggiest idea what a Phillips screwdriver is. Where the successful business owner does succeed is in successful team management. I have done both. As a salesman I was consistently the top

performer, at team management I was an also ran. Those who cannot recruit, select, train, inspire, lead and manage a team will never run a successful business. Business owners whose attitude is, ‘if you want a job doing properly do it yourself,’ can never compete against a rival’s well-managed team. I fall into this category. I used my wife to hire and fire. Such is the difference between shop floor and sales that occasionally it is necessary to cross no-man’s land. I recall being interviewed by a pathway

and patio installation marketing company. Salesmen were advised to visit clients wearing cords and body warmers rather than suits. This was to create the illusion that they were familiar with managing the task. Instead of focusing on running your business turn your attention instead to effectively managing your staff. Each has a task; encourage, empathise and reward them. Delegate and use the strengths of each individual where they are likely to be most effective. A people person is best with clients; great at the counter, reception or in sales. Those lacking personality best put them out of sight. If a family or staff member is creative then let them help with marketing. Successful business management means putting round pegs in round holes, square pegs in square holes.

Adding fuel to the winter payment fire I FULLY agree with the Editor regarding the heating allowance. Bus passes, television licences, rent and rates rebate should be abolished and pensioners should receive a liveable state pension. As my late mother-in-law said: “I don’t need these payments, just give me a decent pension.” Of course this would create redundancies in the civil service and local government, a cost the central government might wish to avoid. Spain, they say, is a hot country so you don’t need the allowance. How is it that the mountains are covered in snow in winter? Madrid isn’t exactly boiling hot in winter and neither is most of northern Spain. Who is kidding who? Let us have our vote back and a reasonable pension. After all, we did pay taxes during our working lives so now let’s enjoy the benefits of our labours. Robert Peake, Mijas Pueblo (Malaga)

Not viable THE winter fuel allowance is a nonsense and should end. Pension credits are available for those who need them and other benefits exist. The Editor’s conclusions are illogical: the UK may be a wealthy country but it can’t afford the drugs and health service that keep us alive until we can’t walk or talk. It then nurses us to an end that is unsatisfactory in quality of life and they pay us bigger pensions. We are at a point where half the population work for money. The other half, in education or retired, are supported by those working and supplemented by savings. Pension schemes are based upon workers contributing but nearly half of workers’ pay is removed by taxes and national insurance. It is foolish economics and populist nonsense to say “Pensioners deserve better.” Pensioners have to realise they have already had a chance to earn and save and many have huge assets in their possessions.

State pensions have to be a safety net, not a salary by right. Sixty per cent of the world’s population is in dire poverty yet many of them put away up to 20 per cent in savings to help pay for schooling, health and care for their elderly family members. Pampered western cultures have to cut back on quality of life, meaning excessive benefits, high tax, superb healthcare, generous infrastructure and help for all those in need. Then they can afford to help others around the world who are vastly worse off although some economies are catching up. We in Europe have about 5 per cent of the world’s population and 25 per cent of its wealth. That is changing fast and we shall have to tighten our belts for a long time yet. nasty experiences on flights, some years ago four of us took a flight to Cyprus from Gatwick in London. Twenty minutes into the flight, the captain announced that we had to return to Gatwick for technical reasons. As we came in to land we were followed by two fire engines either side! The passengers remained absolutely quiet, without a titter. We waited for five hours before we took off again but were told that our luggage would follow on another flight. When we finally got it next day, the cases were slightly damp.

Lights out I AM writing in reference to the absolutely dreadful service we encounter all too often here in Spain. Our community of 22 dwellings was left without electricity after a storm and as I didn’t have the community account information, which is kept by our administrators, I got the reply that Endesa were unable to help. It took four phone calls, the last one from the electrician we often use, and six-and-a-half hours for Endesa to sort this problem out. As the storms raged on we woke up to the same problem, although after only three phone calls and three hours waiting, the electricity came back on. It was a very frustrating situation as Endesa seemed incapable of identifying where we were located and kept telling me

there was no problem. To say they were unhelpful would be an understatement: they simply didn’t appear to care that 22 houses were without electricity! Anne-Marie Savastano (by email)

Ludo torture I READ with interest a story in the online edition of the Euro Weekly News. It described the indignation of a group of friends fined for playing ‘parchis’ in Malaga town square after midnight. Well done, Local Police! I would like each of those doughty officers to receive a commendation if not a medal. This cut-throat version of ludo should be played in a soundproof room or preferably a padded cell. I also believe a fine of €101 each was far too lenient if, as Euro Weekly News revealed, they were playing for three hours. No wonder there were complaints as these fanatics rattled their dice in that horrid little cup and scatter them noisily on the board until 2am. In the days when I lived in a seafront apartment an entire summer was made unbearable by a family of Madrileños who spent all night, every night playing ‘parchis.’ I only wish I’d had the nerve to ring the police as the Malaga residents did. They never learn MORE PEOPLE have been killed and massacred in the name of God due to organised religion than anything else. It’s only logical true believers in a spiritual deity wouldn’t normally murder their fellow human beings although throughout history the same contradictory mistakes were repeated in order to benefit one religion or another. All religions are organisations and structures conceived by human beings, with their intrinsic faults and defects. Personally, I prefer the Golden Rule, which never fails: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Why is this simple Rule so difficult to apply and practice? Taking a lead from Saudi… A

LTHOUGH all rather macabre, I did find the highly media covered re-enactment of the two alleged murders of the Thai backpackers, pretty riveting this week. It was actually not the first time I had observed this practice of public demonstration by criminal perpetrators. I remember on one occasion, while watching extremely boring Saudi Television, the programme was suddenly interrupted by a voice informing us that two Filipinos had confessed to the particularly vicious rape and murder of a Saudi man and wife. The scene then opened in the bedroom of the unfortunate victims. The accused then proceeded to reenact the whole sordid series of events. At the close of the action the men, in full close-up, confessed to both murders. The following Friday, after prayers, they chopped off their heads in the market square. Job done. These men bore no apparent marks or signs of any form of torture and frankly, in this latest incident, these two men would, in my opinion, need to have been under the direction of Carl Foreman and possess

Also what’s afoot in North Korea, Libya, Australia, and Afghanistan, etc. In this day and age the plight of the whole world is at our fingertips, dear reader. Thanks for your interest. Following research, the scientists say this is because of a protein called PD-L1 which forms a ‘molecular shield’ around some cancer cells preventing them from being destroyed. They carried out a study injecting an antibody into the blood stream of mice to block the protein, destroying the shield and allowing radiotherapy to target the cancer cell. The findings have been published in the journal Cancer Research, and are believed they could significantly boost the power of radiotherapy.

Scientists in the UK at the University of Manchester have discovered the reason why radiotherapy treatment does not always work and have found a way to improve its success. More than half of cancer patients are treated with radiotherapy, which kills tumour cells, but some cancer cells become resistant to the treatment and can grow into new tumours.

WITH the arrival of autumn and the return to schools and nurseries, bronchitis is more prevalent in children than ever. The disease, characterised by its cough, affects 80 per cent of children in the first two years of life and results in the most hospitalisations of children up to the age of 14 above other diseases such as tonsillitis, appendicitis and gastroenteritis. In the last 10 years more than 63,000 children have been admitted to health centres with the condition. However, despite the high incidence of the disease, health officials say there has been a significant improvement in mortality data (decreased by almost 30 per cent) and the average stay in hospital has fallen and currently stands at 5.6 days.

High cost of alcohol THE average person in Britain spends £50,000 (€64,000) on alcohol in their lifetime. The figures, compiled for Macmillan Cancer

Elderly on their own MORE than 1.5 million elderly people live alone in Spain. The Federation of Friends of the Elderly launched an awareness campaign ‘They’re living alone’ to mark International Day of Older Persons. The number of elderly has grown significantly in recent decades, as the over 65s represent 18 per cent of the population and is growing.

HO do you trust? Politicians? Bankers? The police? Trust is now at an all time low for many, mainly due to those at the top who have let the rest of us down. Indeed, it was recently suggested that all UK MPs should attend ‘honesty’ classes. And that’s the truth, honestly! But let he who is without sin cast the first stone. After all, haven’t most of us been economical with the truth at some point? “Nice outfit” tends to work better than “you look a bit chubby in that.” Not to mention: “That’s odd because you were definitely on the guest list!” Or: “I’ve had a few problems with my email - must be the server!” According to a recent study, 60 per cent of people lied at least once during a 10 minute conversation. Unsurprisingly, men lie differently from women, tending to lie ‘upwards’ (‘earn more,’ are ‘taller’)

There are many kennels on the coast some are well run and licensed, others are not. Often I receive calls from owners complaining when they collect their pets from kennels they look thin, it’s always best to take your own food and of course medication.

I always recommend you DON’T BOOK UNTIL YOU LOOK. If a kennel will not allow you to look around, then go somewhere else since they may have something to hide. Fireman tries to bring puppy back to life

LIFE SAVER: The fireman gave the puppy mouth-to-mouth.

A FIREMAN in Sagunto, Valencia, was caught on film bringing a puppy back from the dead. A video clip has been doing the rounds on social media channels since Wednesday, October 1. The clip shows fireman Carlos Arana give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a two-month-old Yorkshire Terrier puppy after rescuing it from a house fire in Sagunto. As the video shows, Arana performed CPR for more than three minutes on the lifeless puppy, and

after chest compressions and an oxygen mask failed to reanimate the little dog, Arana can be seen bringing the puppy round with the kiss of life. A fellow firefighter, Cristobel Jover Badia, caught the incident on camera. He said: “Carlos grabbed the puppy and ran outside where he started pumping its chest. “The poor little thing was completely limp but Carlos was determined to save him. “He put an oxygen mask over its muzzle but when neither that nor the

pumping worked he prised its mouth open and gave it mouth-to-mouth.” The puppy was taken for further treatment at a local veterinary clinic, but unfortunately later died from its injuries. The clinic issued a statement saying: “Unfortunately, despite the incredible efforts of the fireman, there was just too much smoke damage in the poor thing’s lungs.” Even though this story does not have a happy ending, Carlos Arana is still being applauded across Facebook and Twitter for his efforts.
