€2.7bn in August TOURIST spending in the Balearics grew by 4.3 per cent in August compared to the same month in 2013, reaching €2.7 billion. It is the first month of the year so far that visitors to the islands spent more than in 2013, with the exception of April - accounted for by the fact that Easter was in April this year and March last year. The improvement in revenue is down to the increase in the number of tourists as the amount they spend has actually fallen. Foreign visitors spent an average of €1,070 during their stay, 3.5 per cent less than a year ago. Mallorca’s spending reached €1.8 billion in August with the British spending the most.

WARM SEPTEMBER: Temperatures across the Balearics were hotter than normal.
September saw record temps
SEPTEMBER saw hotter than normal temperatures across the Balearic Islands. Temperatures in Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Fomentera in September reached an average 24.4ºC or 2.3 degrees higher than normal and record-breaking levels in Port de Pollensa (25.1ºC), Porreres (25ºC), Ciutadella (25.1 ºC) and Sant Joan de Labritja (23.5 ºC). During the first three weeks of the month, the maximum temperatures were above 30ºC and minimum temperatures were also higher than commonly-registered levels, said
Aemet Director on the Balearic Islands Maria Jose Guerrero. September 8 was the warmest day in Mallorca, with temperatures reaching 35.2ºC in Porreres. Data show that temperatures started dropping on September 22 and approached normal levels. Ironically recent cloud bursts meant September also say more rain than normal. Rain gauges in Son Servera measured 119.4 litres per square metre, which is double the normal September levels (52.1 litres).

Businessman staged suicide POLICE have concluded that businessman Gabriel Catala, who was found shot dead at his villa in Valldemossa, killed himself. Following a second post mortem examination, investigators have closed the case with all evidence indicating suicide. Catala, aged 46, was found dead in August. He had been shot at close range in the stomach. The
property also had broken furniture and gun shots in the wall with initial evidence leading officers to first believe he had been killed during a violent assault at his home with Catala making it look like a robbery. Statements of several people from the businessman’s family and professional circle strengthened the hypothesis that he had planned to commit suicide.
He cancelled several appointments shortly before his death and it appears he had taken antidepressant drugs and alcohol before ending his life. The right thing to do is fight IS
T
HE UK Parliament has done the right thing in the fight against IS Islamic fighters. Sending in the RAF to help in the fight against extremism is the least the government can do. The IS, in both Syria and Iraq, has shown itself to be utterly ruthless with a total disregard for the lives of people who get in their way. And we need to be clear about this, it is not just people of other religions they are killing and driving from their homes, it is fellow Muslims too. Their religious war is not about spreading the word of Islam, as they may want to make some people think, it is about enforcing their own particularly bloodthirsty interpretation. Not for them persuasion; they take the route of oppression. It speaks volumes that Iran, not noted for its tolerance, is one of the
main opponents of IS in the region. Iran has supplied guns and ammunition to forces opposed to IS, and also sent in rocket launchers. So an unofficial and unlikely alliance is now forming against the IS threat. A NATO-based coalition in the air, and Iran on the ground. Unfortunately, there seem to be too many disaffected youth radicalised in Western countries, from Spain to France and the UK, willing to join in the bloodshed, the most infamous of whom is Jihadi John, who has so cruelly beheaded three hostages on video. So yes, send in the air force, but also think about those who have joined in the fight for IS. It should be made absolutely clear there is no room back home, whether in the UK, Spain or any other country, for anyone who has joined the organisation.
Flood damage investment THE Balearic Government is to invest €660,000 on improving conservation and maintenance of streams and watercourses throughout the Islands. In a bid to prevent further damage and destruction from rains in the coming weeks and over winter, 20 separate works
will be carried out in Mallorca, at a cost of around €450,000. Work will include cleaning and clearing sections of streams in urban areas and municipalities of Sant Joan, Petra, Ariany, sa Pobla, Muro, Manacor, Felanitx, Buger, Puigpunyent and some areas of Serra de Tramuntana.

Missing girl’s father in court THE father of teenager Malen Ortiz, who has been missing since last December from Son Ferrer, Calvia, is on trial for threatening his former partner. She said she received 148 threatening text messages in just one morning and was also verbally threatened by Malen’s father. Palma court heard how he explained he had wanted to retrieve
some of his stuff he claims had been stolen from him but denied making verbal threats to his former partner saying he had not spoken to her for months. The couple were together at the time of Malen’s disappearance but the relationship later broke down. The prosecution is calling for a restraining order and a fine.
Former councillors in corruption case TWO former PP councillors, Aina Castillo and Javier Rodrigo de Santos, are defendants in the Espases hospital corruption case. Castillo is accused of giving preferential treatment to Over Marketing to head the campaign to promote the new Espases hospital. She told the investigating judge in the case that the hiring of the agency for the hospital advertising was suggested by former president Jaume Matas. Former councillor for Planning, Javier Rodrigo de Santos told the judge he decided to hire the advertising firm on his own initiative, not Jaume Matas. There are questions over the legality of building the Espases Hospital in Palma which opened in 2010.

Action Aid film is to highlight poverty concern in Palma THE NGO Action Aid is working with residents in the Palma neighbourhood of Gotleu to make a video which analyses the impact of the crisis in Spain.
One in five people in Spain are at risk of poverty with Action Aid also looking at stories from resident in Leganes, Madrid and a village in Galicia.

Wanted German arrested leaving Mallorca by ferry NATIONAL POLICE arrested a German citizen from Mallorca in the port of Denia (Alicante) who allegedly killed his partner just 48 hours earlier in Germany.
The man, aged 53, had a restraining order against him for abuse and after his partner was found dead at her home in the German city of Sylt the search was on.
Realising the man could be in Spain, a European Arrest Warrant was issued and he was tracked down arriving in Denia on a ferry from Palma de Mallorca.

James Blunt in wedding blessing POP STAR James Blunt has married Sofia Wellesley with their wedding being blessed in Mallorca. The chaplain of the Anglican Church in Mallorca was delighted to officiate in a discrete service at the home of a family friend. Speaking to the Euro Weekly News, the chaplain said he was unaware of the famous pop star as he had not been present when he met with Sofia (granddaughter of the Duke of Wellington) and her mother Corrine some months ago although he did recall noticing the guitar in the office with Sofia saying “Oh my boyfriend plays the guitar as well!” It was not until the end of the initial conversation, when completing the application form with James’s name, that he realised who the couple were. The couple were married in a traditional service with hymns and with a soloist singing ‘Amazing Grace.’
Trained robbers on trial PROSECTORS are calling for sentences totalling 27 years in prison for three members of a band of ‘paramilitary’ robbers disbanded in 2013 in Mallorca in Operation Kraken. The trio, who all have military training, stole a military truck before using it to commit a series of robberies including one from Carrefour in the Coll d’en Rabassa shopping centre in Palma in May 2009. The group rammed the truck into the wall at least five times but failed to enter Carrefour where the safe was located. Later that year in October they broke into a shopping centre and stole over €100,000 whilst the third attack came in Bunyola where they managed to steal police equipment such as bullet proof vests and other equipment valued at €5,592. In June 2010 the ringleader of the group returned to Carrefour Coll d’en Rabassa and seized €160,406 after threatening the manager.
Marina makeover attracts Ventura luxury yacht group THE Ferretti Yacht Group dealer for Mallorca, Ventura Yachts S.L. has opened a new office at the Port Adriano Marina. The marina was recently extended with designs by international designer Philippe Starck and will soon be able to accommodate yachts up to 110m.

Inca wants approval for a new school
THE full Inca Council is to ask the Balearic Government to approve the construction of a new school in the city. The town hall voted in favour of a motion by the group Mes per Inca which highlighted the need for a new school in primary education due to the poor condition of the Llevant school and the lack of places in public schools which came to light during the enrolment period for the start of the new 2014-2015 term. Now, the municipal officers are assessing which land would be suitable for the site of a school to offer to the Department of Education.

JUDGES have ordered the Mallorcan Government to suspend the implementation of the TIL education law without delay. It comes as several schools had begun applying the language law which is the government’s attempt to apply three languages in classrooms. Some argued it was undermining education in Catalan. Disruption for roadworks THE Highways Department of Mallorca said work will be carried out on improving the access road to the lighthouse of Cape Formentor on the Ma-2210. Works will be carried out from the 8,650km mark, after the Formentor hotel, to the 19,290km mark with the stretch being completely cut off to traffic during the improvements. There is a budget of €776,961.

Liberty Seguros and RACE new road safety campaign for pensioners MANY accidents occur on urban roads, and in many cases, pedestrians are the victims. According to the DGT, 33 per cent of pedestrians killed on urban roads were over the age of 65. For this reason, Liberty Seguros, together with RACE (Royal Automobile Club of Spain) are conducting an awareness campaign in Spain, under the name of ‘Senior Mobility, the way forward’ aimed at older people in order to reduce the number of these accidents. This is to raise awareness for the over 65-year-old population for safer mobility with useful tips and recommendations. The project will cover the Spanish geography and actions will be developed in the cities of Granada, Alicante, Salamanca and Santiago de Compostela, amongst others. The awareness campaign will be based primarily on a ‘road show’ that will feature a mobile information room and training on road safety, especially for those over 65, as well as on other aspects that can affect ones safety, like the importance of healthy eating or how to improve fitness.
Thus, thanks to Liberty Seguros and RACE, the project will provide a better understanding of the behaviour of the senior population on public thoroughfares and thus define increased and improved road safety policies to reduce traffic accidents, helping this group to move more safely on the streets.

Spain suspends the referendum THE Constitutional Court in Madrid has suspended an independence referendum for Catalonia on November 9, although leaders have said they will press ahead with the preparations for a vote anyway. The 12 judges took just a few hours to make a decision against the independence referendum, terming it illegal on grounds of breaching the country’s constitution. The decision had been predicted and expected by the regional government in Catalan. The court, which had up to five months to give its ruling, said in a statement that it had accepted the appeal and
suspended the referendum whilst it considers arguments brought forward by the central government. Artur Mas, the head of the Catalan government, signed a decree asking for a referendum on Saturday. The Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, said in a televised address, after the emergency cabinet meeting: “he deeply regretted Mas’s move … it divides Catalans, alienates them from Europe and the rest of Spain and seriously harms their welfare. “There is nothing and no one, no power nor institution that can break this principle of sole sovereignty.”
He added that the right to decide a region’s status belonged to “all Spanish people” under the 1978 constitution law. Mas is still pushing ahead for a vote despite the harsh words of Rajoy, in a statement he said: “Voting on November is the best thing for everyone because it will allow us and also the Spanish government to know what the Catalan people’s opinion is.” Barcelona’s historic Sant Jaume square clock has been ticking down the seconds to November 9, with huge support and advertising campaigns from local television and radio stations.

Palma’s eviction procedures criticised
PALMA City Council has come under fire for the large amount of unresolved evictions taking place in the city. An organisation looking at those affected by mortgage repayments criticised the council for its approach to home repossession and evictions. The organisation has said that over the last two weeks the council has referred 20 cases of families on the point of being evicted to the social services without first attempting to find a satisfactory solution to the problem. Social Services representative Ana Ferriol has confirmed that she knows of 10 such cases, and says that the families are being attended to. She did not elaborate on whether or not an adequate solution to the problem was able to be found. Far from being satisfied with this response, Àngela Pons, spokeswoman for the organisation representing these families, has released details of yet more families threatened with eviction.
Pons also gave her support to a motion that would reallocate funds of €300,000 that are currently being used to rent rooms in hostels for the homeless. Under the new proposals, these funds could be used to create up to 100 social houses. Although the motion has not been granted by the council, many do not understand how the council can consider paying €3,000 a month for a family to stay in a hostel, when the same amount of money could be used to fund between five and seven houses. Calls have also been made for the banks to release unoccupied houses to the government for use as social housing. Replying to these accusations, Ana Ferriol said that there was no quick fix, but that as well as providing help for families to stay in hostels, the council has also designated at least €500,000 to pay for rents and €200,000 or home maintenance so far this year.

THE No Means No campaign launched by the Euro Weekly News (EWN) has been given the thumbs-up by singer Mica Paris. As a crusader herself who does huge amounts of work for charity, she happily agreed to support the EWN campaign ‘No Means No,’ a movement against the abuse of women and the promotion of equality for women in a message that means: ‘When I say no, it really means no.’ She took the time to speak to EWN’s Anna Tildesley about her life and work…
V
IVACIOUS, bubbly and caring were the three words which immediately came to mind, when interviewing Mica Paris last night before her appearance at Old Joys Pub in Puerto Banus. Regardless of the sweltering heat and usual pre-show chaos, when there was a chance to sit with her for 10 minutes, it was like we were in a room on our own having a girlie chat. A legend in her own right,
“I really think women need all the help and encouragement they can get. We are under attack.” Mica Paris is not ‘just a singer’ as she puts it; in fact, she said: “If I was just a singer, it would drive me mad.” She is also a presenter, roving reporter and a regular fill-in host on ITV’s This Morning. And if that wasn’t enough to be getting on with, her spare time is dedicated to two charities. The legendary soul singer is the ambassador for the Amy Winehouse Trust, and the patron of the charity KIN (Kibera in Need). Mica travels to Kenya once a year to support the families in the Kibera slum and by the look on her face as she describes walking through the poverty-stricken area, it’s a very challenging and heartwrenching experience. “You gag as you walk through. I was ill for four days the last time I came back, but we have to help them,” she explained, adding: “I’m lucky, and I want people to realise
how spoilt we all are, it’s a reality check on life. “We worry about what our hair looks like or what necklace to wear, but when you go to these places, you realise that our worries are nothing compared to what these children live with.” Mica’s children also help out with the charity work and although it is too dangerous for them to go to the Kibera slums, she tells me that they do a lot of charity work around her home town of London. Fascinated by how this beautiful, 5ft 11” tall woman can look so amazing at 45 and knowing articles written about her yo-yo dieting and helterskelter weight fluctuations, when I asked her to divulge her secret of a balanced healthy lifestyle, surprisingly she didn’t talk about personal trainers, chia seeds or yoga classes. Instead she said: “It’s simple: one litre of water a day, vegetables, protein and a gym session three times a week,” and by the look on her face, when Alex looked over, a gorgeous boyfriend seems to help! Mica is embarking on two new albums to be released later this year. She is collaborating on the new Freemasons album and working with Rod Temperton, the songwriter famous for writing the historic No 1 hit for Michael Jackson, ‘Thriller.’

Second priest dies of Ebola THE second Spanish priest to contract the Ebola virus has died in a Madrid hospital, according to Spanish news agency Efe. The 69-year-old medically-trained priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, was admitted to Madrid’s Carlos III hospital on Monday September 22, where he underwent treatment for the disease which he contracted whilst working in the Hospital Order of San Juan de Dios in western Sierra Leone. Flown to Madrid in a medically-equipped military plane, Garcia Viejo’s condition was always described as ‘grave.’ Garcia Viejo is the second Spanish priest to die of the disease. In August, Miguel Pajares also succumbed to the illness which has ravaged West African these last few months.

The Spanish government is part-privatising the subsidiary by making 49 per cent available to the public. Last June the Irish-owned airline, turned down in the past by Ferrovial for a share in London-Gatwick, revealed it was
“seriously interested.” It was considering either the 21 per cent to be split among at least three majority shareholders or the 28 per cent offered to private investors. At the beginning of September the company’s marketing director Kenny Jacobs claimed they were still interested. Catalan banks ready to move CATALONIA’S two biggest banks would, if necessary, move their head offices from the region. The intentions of CaixaBank and Banco Sabadell in the event of regional independence from Spain were revealed in a report by the Swiss investment Bank, UBS. It corroborated sources close to both banks which also claimed that they have already informed international investors of their intentions. Sabadell’s new statutes do not require its head office to remain in Barcelona. ‘All scenarios’ have been anticipated to defend interests of clients and shareholders, including a change of headquarters, Sabadell board announced.

only on commercial transactions but also on expectations,” the minister added. The Eurozone stimulus measures - 0.05 per cent interest and cash injections - had the minister’s backing, but De Guindos also urged structural reforms throughout the Eurozone, drawing attention to the impact of the euro’s depreciation on Spain.

Investors are now weighing the long term ramifications of the event. Although the Kingdom has remained united, some investors fear that the fissures opened up by the Scottish referendum may take a long time to heal, and the debate over devolution within the UK is now an open question. In the meantime, growth in the UK has slowed from its peak in the first half of 2014 and the Bank of England might not be too keen to raise interest rates as early as the market wants. strong euro have proved forecasts wrong as prices continue falling month after month. It’s now clear that the easing of market panic after Draghi’s 2012 promise induced too much complacency. The risks are now so serious the ECB has no other choice than to act on interest rates as they preannounced at September’s meeting. By cutting interest and announcing ABS purchases, the central bank sent a very strong message to the market. Interest rates were cut to fresh record lows, and Draghi’s Central European Bank will also try to boost credit conditions further by purchasing asset-backed securities and covered bonds. Over the next three years the market will be flooded with around €500 billion. This wall of money heading towards the financial market caught investors by surprise. And while some detractors say it’s too late, this amount of stimulus from the European Central Bank will

OULDN’T it be great to be able to save money? The majority of people would love the idea of putting away a few quid every week and seeing their savings build up over time. A bulky savings account can get a person out of all sorts of financial problems; because no matter how hard we try to budget and stick to that budget, unforeseen costs always pop up. The car breaks down, an uninsured mobile phone is stolen, a fine arrives at the doorstep from traffic control or suddenly the bathroom toilet decides to go on the

A recent survey from the UK reveals that 42 per cent of people save out of necessity, but very few feel they have the ability to save for a rainy day. Making ends meet is hard enough, without trying to put extra cash away for unforeseen costs.
There are, however, little ways to start saving without feeling too economically pressured. By simply changing small day-to-day habits, it’s possible to start building up that illusive savings account. Some of the top money savings tips revealed in the British report are easy to
implement. Using vouchers, coupons and money-off apps are considered the most popular way to make savings, with 50 per cent of people saying they regularly use them to get money off their purchases. Next on the list is taking a packed lunch to work. This is definitely a big
money saver. Preparing food at home is much more economical and healthy. And it allows you to put the money you’ve saved on dining out straight into your savings account. A simple piggy bank may not look like much on the kitchen counter top, but by adding your loose change every day - you’ll be surprised how it adds up. If a gourmet palate is leaving you strapped for cash each month then I’m afraid it’s time to downgrade to a cheaper supermarket. And while on the subject of food, never go shopping on an empty stomach. It’s hazardous for your wallet. Finally, leave the car at home and walk or use public transport. And cut up those credit cards. If you don’t have the money in cash, then you can’t buy it! Simple.

Tunnel vision of doctors can hurt the ill I DO not know all the facts but I think that Frank McDonnell MD (whatever that stands for) is jumping to conclusions when he assumes that Ashya King’s parents probably removed him from hospital to avoid blood transfusions and opted for “alternative” (his quotation marks, not mine) treatment. Firstly, although I did read just once that Mr and Mrs King were Jehovah’s Witnesses, nowhere was it ever suggested that they used their religious beliefs to deny their son treatment. In fact even the hospital made it clear that there had been no objection to treatment on these grounds. Secondly, proton beam treatment is not ‘alternative’ but another form of cancer therapy not available on the NHS or in the UK. It is more likely the doctor in question was convinced of the accuracy of his own diagnosis and worried that another hospital might prove him wrong. Many years ago my then 13year-old son was very ill in Northwick Park Hospital in London. The paediatric gastroenterologist there was so convinced my son was coeliac that he performed an endoscopy without any sedative - three times, because he couldn’t get the test results he expected. When we wrapped our frail son in a blanket and took him out of that hospital we were told not to bring him back and all his medical notes were ‘lost.’ At St Bartholomew’s Hospital he was correctly diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and was soon into remission. I can tell you right now that I hope the boy survives and my heart goes out to him. I do know what it is like to move heaven and earth for a terminally-ill child. My sister had a beautiful little girl who went to America with the help of the NHS for treatment. However, the treatment did not work and seven months and two weeks before her 10th birthday she gave up the fight, so I do know how it feels to have a very sick child. Firstly there is no such thing as a ‘strict JW’ as all Jehovah’s Witnesses are united in their rejection of blood transfusions. Secondly blood transfusions were never an issue as regards the treatment! Ashya was under hospital treatment but he was not removed to avoid blood transfusion but to obtain alternative treatment, one denied by the UK. Thirdly being made a ward of court is a rare event in the UK in these circumstances. Legislation continues to be interpreted in different ways so there needs to be a consideration of many factors for a more holistic approach.
Fourthly, to state that treatment in the UK is the only hope for the child is completely ridiculous and assumes there is no other sophisticated treatment available that respects the wishes of the parents. Why Frank McDonnell thinks that the wishes of the state should over-ride the wishes of the parent in any event is not stated. Equal praise WE have just returned from a 14week stay in our home in England and a friend had kept the Your Say page where Lily Lucy wrote about my original letter praising the Spanish health service. We share our time between Spain and the UK and are in a position to make comparisons between the two. Not that I intended any criticism whatsoever to the UK National Health Service. I think it is superb although due to the enormous pressure that A & E departments are under owing to lack of staff, waiting times tend to be quite extended for nonemergency patients. Uncaring doctor is a disgrace

HY is it that almost every time there is a scandal concerning UK doctors, the offending practitioner has an almost unpronounceable name? This latest incident where a local GP refused to treat an elderly lady who fell down just outside his practice is no exception. Christopher Uwagboe failed to attend to the poor 88-yearold woman because - wait for it - he was ‘not first aid trained’. Did you ever hear such pure unadulterated poppycock in your whole life? How can a doctor, who presumably goes through years of medical education, not be familiar with a procedure practised by the Boy Scouts? Did he somehow do a Miliband and miss a bit? Well, whatever the reason, his decision to remain ensconced in his surgery, hiding behind what also
appeared to be an extremely rude and equally uncaring receptionist, is a disgrace. Let us just hope that his patients are so disgusted they give his surgery a wide berth in the future and hit this incompetent right where it hurts, in his no doubt, well stuffed pockets. Did anyone stay awake all the way through Ed Miliband’s diatribe at the Labour Party Conference? What an intelligence-insulting load of bull. How anyone in their right mind could want to elect the likes of him and Balls is quite beyond me. These people are the same individuals who left the country bankrupt. One even left a note for his successor informing him that there was no money left to work with! One thing that did strike me during his ill-fated oration was the amount of times he used the word ‘friends’. Substitute ‘comrades’ for the word and I

Late breaking news! Vote-rigging by aliens CLAIMS of vote-rigging during the recent Scottish referendum have led to tens of thousands of angry Scots signing online petitions for a recount or a fresh vote based on videos that purport to show evidence of electoral fraud. One video apparently shows a counting officer at the Dundee polling station appearing to lift votes from a ‘yes’ pile and place them under the ‘no,’ while a photo seems to show a ‘yes’ vote, bundled with others, sitting in the ‘no’ pile. Another video allegedly depicts a counting officer in Edinburgh writing on a ballot paper. Want to hear my theory? I think alien invaders beamed down and mixed up the ballot papers, ensuring that all the piles of ‘yes’ votes had a ‘no’ vote on top so they’d be mis-sorted. Simples! The same aliens, incidentally, responsible for the death of Princess Diana, the fake moon landings and for keeping Elvis captive on the moon. And what about the Russian observers who complained that the count was fixed and didn’t meet ‘international standards’? Not how they do it in Russia apparently, where they probably get to stuff the ballot boxes as well. Yep, if there’s anyone who knows about dodgy
vote counts, it’s those Russians ... Now, it’s right and proper that attention is drawn to any apparent

THE clinical signs of pseudo pregnancy range from subtle to extreme. In some cases, they are so convincing that even experienced breeders are confident that a litter is coming. Signs include behavioural changes (anorexia or appetite fluctuations, whining, restlessness, signs of aggression, depression, or anxiety), maternal behaviour, mammary problems, vomiting and abdominal distension. It is not difficult to diagnose false pregnancy in dogs. If the animal went through a heat cycle six to 12 weeks
PREGNANCY: Could it be false? before the onset of clinical signs of pregnancy, whether or not she was known to be bred during that time, a veterinarian will take a thorough history of her recent physical and behavioural conduct and will perform a complete physical examination. Radiographs and ultrasound can be used to conclusively confirm the presence or absence of pregnancy, and no additional blood, urine or other tests should be necessary.
Radiographs and ultrasound are also useful to rule out the possibility of a serious condition called pyometra which is an accumulation of pus inside the uterus from bacterial infection. Pyometra can be lifethreatening and must be treated as an emergency. It is uncommon, but still possible, signs of false pregnancy will appear in a bitch who actually became pregnant and then either aborted or reabsorbed her puppies, in which case the risk of developing pyometra increases dramatically. Unless you are showing your bitch I strongly recommend that they are spayed before the first heat. Vets have different opinions, some agree with me others say after the first heat. From a behavioural point of view the earlier we teach and train our pets the better.

E foolishly claim ours is an enlightened society. We war on nations we feel are in desperate need of a little of our take on liberation. We mock Victorian bashfulness in covering the legs of tables, which they never did. In many ways the Victorians were far more liberated than we are. Better educated, less bigoted, they were simply more discreet about it. They could read books since burnt on the bonfires of political correctness. Such is current hysteria over grey area sex that men dare not stroll past playing fields for fear of being labelled a pervert. I am surprised we don’t throw tablecloths over Victorian works of art that depict children bathers. A newspaper published my photographs of youngsters happily splashing about in the surf of a local beach. A British friend
was horrified that I should take such pictures yet they were typical holiday brochure content. Meanwhile, on newsagents bottom shelves are magazines aimed at pubescent girls, the contents so torrid they would make a sailor blush. In less censorious times there was a time and place for everything including pornography. This was not in children’s school text books. There was probably more sauciness and eye-brow raising behaviour to be found in 19th Century music halls than in 1970’s television studios. Have we decided? Are we prurient or prudish? We are certainly hypocritical. Society today has more faces than a town hall clock. We get ourselves in a tizzy because women of some faiths wear burqas or niqab veil. There is no Koran requirement for them to do so. Let’s stop getting hot under the collar about the dress preferences of some Muslim offshoots. It is none of our business, we

have enough problems of a moral nature of our own without wagging the finger at others. Western Christianity has its share of odd religious sects. Do you open the door to a Jehovah’s Witness? Born again evangelists of the United States make your hair curl? The multi-wife Mormons are a strange bunch but okay because they are not Muslim. How many of us discard their ways and adopt simpler Amish lifestyles? To preserve female modesty some Muslim women do cover up. Why do Westerners want to strip them of their clothes and their modesty; deprive them of respect, their menfolk of dignity? We rant about being able to see only the eyes of clad Muslim women. The less bigoted know that a woman’s eyes are the most appealing part of a woman’s anatomy. Ironically, the eyes are the only part of Western woman covered up when she is wearing little else but sunglasses. Many faiths, not just Muslim, are offended that strangers see parts of sunbathing or partying Western woman that should be seen only in bedrooms or by their gynaecologist. In truth, when it comes to close minds, there isn’t that much between ourselves and various extreme sects.

Virginia, aged 86, and her toy boy husband Ron, a sprightly 84, have been well loved regulars at the Rat Pack Bar in Can Pastilla for over seven years. Last month the couple celebrated 62 years of wedded bliss. ONE of the joys of having a property in Spain is the pleasure of experiencing a colourful garden at Christmas. A garden that motivates you to sit out and enjoy the winter sun and perhaps even eat Christmas lunch outdoors before a glass of brandy and hot mince pies in front of a roaring log fire. There are five main things to be done: 1. Resist doing the major annual garden cut back in the autumn as you would in northern Europe. The cut back is best done in January and February.
Prepare for Christmas 2. Throughout the autumn aim to prolong the flowering of existing perennials and shrubs by continuously deadheading as soon as flowers die. 3. Stimulate the early flowering of shrubs and trees that often do not flower until early to mid January. 4. If your garden is not already fully planted plant up some of the shrubs and trees we list below. 5. Purchase a selection of plants in flower just before Christmas. We list below some of the garden plants that can be in flower at Christmas.
The strawberry tree which has bright red fruits to brighten a corner of the garden. The galan de noche that will pump out its heavy perfume on Christmas Eve. The delebeta and bon accuel varieties of mimosa are spectacular. Shrubs Lantanas are reliable and also hibiscus in warmer spots. Poinsettias can replace a garden Christmas tree. Climbing shrubs. Bougainvilleas, bignonias, blue and white solanums and perfumed white and yellow varieties of jasmines.
Perennials The frutescens and coronarium chrysanthemums and euryops daisy give reliable colour in many gardens. Succulents Several succulents can come into flower around Christmas notably the red hot pocker aloes and the aeoniums. Winter annuals The most reliable for colourful displays are the seasonal pansies, busy lizzies, stocks, wallflowers and also petunias. purchases and sales held an 84.3 per cent of the market between April and June whereas new houses held only a 15.7 per cent of the market (14,296). The majority of the transactions were registered in Madrid with 6,705 transactions, followed by Barcelona (3,395), Valencia (1,633), Sevilla (1,293), Zaragoza (1,286), Torrevieja in Alicante (1,216) and Marbella (Malaga) (1,165). The statistics released by the Ministry of Development show the ‘singularity’ of such an increase, since neither the second quarter of this year nor the one in 2013 were influenced by tax bonuses. carried out by foreigners residing in Spain reached an historical record with 14,952: a 20 per cent improvement compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Alicante has taken a lead position with 3,993 houses sold to foreigners between April and June, followed by Malaga (2,222) and Barcelona (1,317). In addition, foreigners who do not live in Spain bought 1,202 houses which represent an increase of 13.7 per cent compared to the previous year. However, when it comes to considering the market as a whole, the downward trend is still clear. Between July 2013 and June 2014 the number of transactions amounted to 37,115 houses, 2.6 per cent less than the previous period.

Ten golden rules to ensure safety when it comes to refuelling your boat UNLIKE a car, recreational boats have special safety needs when it comes to refuelling. Stern drive or inboard powered boats have closed engine compartments where volatile fuel vapours don’t easily dissipate, and older boats are the riskiest to refuel as their brittle fuel hoses can crack, leaving fuel in the bilge after a fill-up. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has these 10 tips to ensure a non-eventful refuelling: Disembark: As soon as you’re safely tied up to the fuel dock, everyone should hop off the boat. Turn off everything: Shut down all engines, electric motors and galley stoves and turn off the battery at the main switch. Button her up: Close all

Use the blower: Operate the bilge blower (if equipped) for at least four minutes. Sniff test: Smell the bilge and engine compartment before starting the engine. The Copa del Rey Mapfre is the most important regatta held in Spain and one of the best in Europe. It has no doubt helped consolidate the islands’ reputation as a quality tourist destination. President of the RCNP Javier Sanz was presented with the award on behalf of the club at the official ceremony held at Consolat del Mar on Friday September 26.

New Skoda Fabia to debut in Paris

THE new Škoda Fabia will be making its debut at the Paris Motor Show which starts today (Thursday, October 2) and runs until Sunday October 19. The manufacturer will be celebrating a double world premiere: as a hatchback and an estate. El Toro rugby season kicks off Lynda Demangeat THE El Toro RC season kicked off on Saturday with a friendly veterans match against the Unigans from Bilbao. In a well mannered but hard fought match neither side gained the upper hand and the game ended with a draw after scoring four tries each. No serious injuries were sustained although a
few of the players were complaining of bumps and bruises. The El Toro RC girls team took part in a Sport for Girls event in Calvià Municipal Sports Centre on Sunday. This involved some of the local girls’ rugby, basketball, volleyball and football teams competing against each other in the different sports. The El Toro RC players,
men and girls alike, have been in pre-season training since the beginning of August, even through the heat of the latter summer months and are well prepared for the upcoming season which begins on October 11. The new season promises to be closely fought with 10 local teams competing in the Baleares Senior League. The youngsters began their training in September and now have around 60 children taking part in categories from the very youngest at three years up to 18 years of age. At the Son Caliu pitch on Saturday October 4 from 10am, El Toro RC is hosting
WELL PREPARED: Pre-season training with a difference. an Open Day where the youngsters have been asked to bring along friends and family to try out the sport of rugby and to have some fun. The veterans will also be taking to the pitch again in a friendly match against West Bridgford RFC veterans. Kick-off is planned for 5pm.
