Storms hit province RESIDENTS across Almeria saw the skies open and heavy rain sweep across the region with flooding in some areas. With the storms arriving residents and visitors battened down the hatches as the province went on weather alert. Some places experienced hailstorms and heavy rain, while others saw rivers of mud sweeping through their towns. Pulpi was the area first hit, as the Nogalte watercourse began to flow, with Huercal Overa, Lubrin, Antas, Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora reporting heavy rains shortly afterwards. In September 2012, four people died in the region as storms hit. As the
rain got heavier social networks began flowing with messages from citizens concerned that they were in for a repeat performance. Vera cancelled its bullfight and the Guardia Civil began advising people to remove their cars from basement parking and to relocate them to higher areas. Some residents began moving their belongings to higher floors in their properties and the Atalaya neighbourhood of Huercal Overa started to see flooding, although it fell quickly. The A-334 in Antas was completely cut off by muddy floodwaters and Guardia Civil had to rescue a British
man trapped in his vehicle at Los Gallardos. Luis Antonio Petit from San Sebastian described his holiday home in Vera that he had spent his life savings on. “In two hours, I have lost everything,� he said. Mayor Rogelio Mena in Albox asked for urgent help to clear access routes, as some areas were cut off. The rain eased, leaving residents with the task of clearing mud and debris from the streets, and in some cases, counting the damage to their homes. There was some positive news from the rains, however, as local reservoirs were topped up in just a couple of hours.

HOTEL SAGA: Some say the hotel violates the Coastal Act and is on protected land.
All change at Algarrobico hotel
THE saga of the Algarrobico hotel rumbles on with the Junta of Andalucia (regional government) asking the Andalucian Superior Court of Justice to anul a legal judgement. On July 29 the court declared the municipal planning permission given to the controversial hotel in 2003 to be legal. The latest action comes after Ecologists in Action and Save Mojacar argued that the July judgement violates an effective remedy and ignores multiple statements that show
the hotel violates the Coastal Act and is on specially protected land. With this in mind, the Junta has announced its plan to ask the court to annul the July decision. The Junta has said that it will exhaust all administrative and governmental actions within its power to ensure the full availability and protection of the coastal area. The hotel has become a cause eclebre with environmental groups including Greenpeace calling for its demolition.

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER visited Almeria and vowed to return to the province for filming. Schwarzenegger is visiting Almeria with film producer Fredrick Malmberg to view potential filming areas for the third Conan film, 33 years after the first in the series was filmed here in Tabernas.
While in the province, Schwarzenegger took time to meet with the mayor of Almeria, Luis Rodriguez Comendador, and president of the Junta de Andalucia, Gabriel Amat, in a press conference in Almeria City and took time to view his new star on the walk of fame in the city, where he now sits beside such famous names as Omar
Sharif, Max von Sydow and Ridley Scott. Schwarzenegger spoke fondly of his first time in Almeria, when filming the original Conan film. The 67-year-old Austrian actor said: “I never forgot my time in Almeria. Despite many tough scenes, like the vulture pecking me in the face, when I finished filming I said I’d return.”
Bed closures HUERCAL OVERA has lost 30 beds at its hospital in a move that has been criticised by the CSIF (employee trade union). The beds will remain closed until at least December.
Pedestrian access HUERCAL DE ALMERIA is adding pedestrian access to the stretch of the CN-340 that travels through the town. Work is expected to complete during October 2014. Gergal upgrades GERGAL has received €149,000 from Almeria Province for improvements to the bridge at the entrance to the town as well as pavement renovations in the town centre.

Flowers for the lady HUNDREDS of thousands of people will be descending on the city of Zaragoza for the Our Lady of the Pillar (Nuestra Señora del Pilar) festival offering of flowers. Many will be dressed in the traditional costume of Aragon and will bring flowers to the Virgin statue in a relatively modern ‘tradition’ which has become one of the biggest religious gatherings in Spain. The record number of people to turn up for the event, where the flowers are piled up into a pyramid structure to form a flower mantle around the Virgin statue, is 450,000. The right thing to do is fight IS
T
HE UK Parliament has done the right thing in the fight against IS Islamic fighters. Sending in the RAF to help in the fight against extremism is the least the government can do. The IS, in both Syria and Iraq, has shown itself to be utterly ruthless with a total disregard for the lives of people who get in their way. And we need to be clear about this, it is not just people of other religions they are killing and driving from their homes, it is fellow Muslims too. Their religious war is not about spreading the word of Islam, as they may want to make some people think, it is about enforcing their own particularly bloodthirsty interpretation. Not for them persuasion; they take the route of oppression. It speaks volumes that Iran, not noted for its tolerance, is one of the
main opponents of IS in the region. Iran has supplied guns and ammunition to forces opposed to IS, and also sent in rocket launchers. So an unofficial and unlikely alliance is now forming against the IS threat. A NATO-based coalition in the air, and Iran on the ground. Unfortunately, there seem to be too many disaffected youth radicalised in Western countries, from Spain to France and the UK, willing to join in the bloodshed, the most infamous of whom is Jihadi John, who has so cruelly beheaded three hostages on video. So yes, send in the air force, but also think about those who have joined in the fight for IS. It should be made absolutely clear there is no room back home, whether in the UK, Spain or any other country, for anyone who has joined the organisation.
Lack of sleep for residents in Almeria ALMERIA City Council has promised that the future Parque de la Estacion would be a reality and open by early 2015, ready for the trains. The speed and progress shows that the spring deadline should happen. However, the rush to complete the project is coming at a price, that of the sleep of nearby residents. Floodlights have been erected to provide illumination for night workers, and there is a regular stream of industrial traffic at night causing noise in addition to the construction noise also occurring at night. “It’s unbearable,” said Jose Manuel Moreno, a resident of Plaza Gloria Fuertes, close to the work. “The night work began in the final week of September and has not ceased. There are people working and studying here that need sleep. My daughter had a test the other day. We needed to be rested and could not sleep a wink because of the constant noise,” continued Moreno.

New plans for changing Mojacar
MOJACAR Council has given initial approval for some changes in the town. The project began in November 2013 when 74 proposals were put forward for consideration as part of a large plan to overhaul the town, improving infrastructure and highlighting places of historical interest while protecting the town. Since then, some of the proposals have been amended, some approved and some declined. Accepted proposals include creating a central area linking historic areas of the town with the rest of Mojacar, improving existing roads, establishing new
connections to reduce pressure on the coastal road, improving urban areas, making them greener, new facilities such as a health centre, bus station, police office and green points, preserving the natural values of the town and incorporating it into its surroundings. Improvements to the promenade are planned, as well as creating a marina. On a residential note, a number of new homes are planned. Mojacar’s focus is on improving the aesthetic appeal of the town whilst also being sympathetic to the natural landscape and raising awareness of the historic areas.
Casting starts for Clavius in Almeria CASTING began in earnest today (October 2) as people headed to the Moises Ruiz pavilion for their chance to be an extra in the upcoming movie Clavius, starring Joseph Fiennes. Some of the eager hopefuls had camped out overnight to be one of the first chosen. Casting continues until Sunday from 10am until 2pm and 4pm until 8pm to ensure that the casting directors can get through a good number of movie hopefuls. Many of the people queuing had already been used during the filming of Exodus, the recent
Ridley Scott movie shot in the province. The casting directors are especially keen to see men of slight build with beards and ladies with long hair. People with modern haircuts, unusually coloured hair and
tattoos are being rejected. The directors want a natural look, in keeping with the time of Jesus. Filming takes place in October at the Alcazaba in Almeria City and in the natural park surrounding Nijar.

Snails of Seron growing apace EL PERDIZ snail farm in Seron has seen its first clutch of snails since its launch in the summer of 2013. Cano Carpintero had been out of work for some time, so decided to try to change his family’s financial situation by starting El Perdiz snail farm. He has been working tirelessly to build the business for the last 12 months and now
it seems his work is coming to fruition. Snails have two clutches per year, in spring and autumn, laying up to 120 eggs each. Carpintero has been able to start selling his snails to restaurants in Almeria and Granada and is thrilled that the business is going well for him and his family. The farm, which covers 2,000 square metres has approximately 150,000 shelled residents grazing freely in the spaces designed especially for them. Demolition risk for Albox PROSECUTORS are seeking the demolition of 98 homes owned by British citizens in the Albox area. The properties form part of a criminal case against two developers that allegedly built on undeveloped land without the relevant municipal permit.
The prosecution is claiming for the promoters to indemnify and take over the costs of demolition and compensation of €688,666.95. This is despite last week’s claim from town mayor Rogelio Mena that 500 homes - nearly all of those declared illegal - would be saved by

Hunting season begins in Almeria MORE than 1,000 hunters are expected to visit Sierra de los Filabres during the 2014-2015 season which begins now. The Environment Delegate highlighted the potential benefits of hunting and its contribution to the local economy. An income of €120,000 to the
public purse is expected, with the money being used to improve the habitat and management of enclosed hunting spaces. There are 750 enclosed hunting spaces in Almeria, of which 60 are dedicated to big game like ibex and deer, while the rest are predominantly focused on
rabbit and partridge. Hunting itself can be quite lucrative with a good ibex worth approximately €6,000. However, although difficult to calculate the exact advantages of hunting to the provincial economy, there are fringe benefits for the hotel and restaurant sector.
Casa Ibañez Museum hosts retrospective exhibition HUERCAL OVERA’S Casa Ibañez Museum is hosting an exhibition of photographs by Perez Siguier. More than 80 photographs in the exhibition, all in black and white, feature the harsh realities of life in Almeria during the 1950s and 1960s. Curator of the museum, Juan Manuel Martin Robles, commented: “This is a set of
photographs of great aesthetic beauty, which have documentary truth and show the special sensitivity of the photographer. They are a visual memory of a time and place. These images tell not only the story of an urban Almeria, but are also a reflection of our recent history. They are about daily life in the grey, post-war Spain.”

Almeria reaches the Oscars ALMERIA based movie ‘Vivir es facil con los ojos cerrados’ (Living is easy with your eyes closed), has been chosen to represent Spain at the 87th edition of the Academy Award for Best
Foreign Language Film. The film, directed by David Trueba, is set in 1966 and tells the story of Antonio, a teacher who uses songs by the Beatles to teach English to his students.
Two thieves arrested in El Ejido GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested two men for the theft of materials from a farm in El Ejido. CCH and AML, both 41-year-old residents from Vicar, were arrested on suspicion of the theft of more than 100 metal poles from a farm in Loma del Viento, in the municipality of El Ejido. The owner of the farm spotted the men loading a van with metalwork from his property and called the police. Having spotted the owner, the men left quickly, but the Guardia Civil officers were soon able to trace them and make their arrest.
When he learns that John Lennon is in Almeria to film a movie, Antonio does his utmost to meet him while picking up two runaways as he drives to Almeria. The film is based on a book, Juan and John, by Almeriense author Javier Adolfo Iglesias. The English translation of the title is based on a line in Lennon’s song Strawberry Fields Forever, which Lennon wrote while filming How I won the war in Almeria. The film is no stranger to awards ceremonies and it recently made a big impact at the Goya Awards where it won six awards including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay.

LOS PALOMARES: The clean up continues of the local area.
Festival nightmare for Los Palomares MORE than 80,000 people descended upon Villaricos for the Dreambeach festival in August. Organisers hailed the event a massive success and announced a major financial boost to the local economy with visitors enjoying the leisure facilities on offer in the surrounding area. For some, however, it wasn’t such great news. Residents in Los Palomares are still cleaning up a month later. Walls were covered in graffiti and scattered crates,
bottles and other rubbish was left by the large groups of partygoers gathering outside. Vice president of Los Palomares apartments, Rosie Smith, said: “Part of our area is like a wind tunnel, and it had taken plastic bottles into one area. I have never seen so many plastic bottles in my life.” Residents have been cleaning up the area themselves, scrubbing walls and removing large quantities of rubbish.

A prickly problem ALMERIA is suffering from a prickly problem as cacti are being demolished by bugs. Gardens across Almeria are seeing their cacti rotting before their eyes as the cochinilla beetle chomps away at the juicy paddle leaves. Sheila and Douglas Snowball in Los Gallardos have been attempting to battle the cacti blight. They paid €1,000 for someone to destroy and remove their affected cacti, only to suffer a repeat occurrence later on. They have now taken to chopping and removing the cacti themselves. Sheila told Euro Weekly News: “This is not all on my land but to leave any infected cacti makes the whole thing a waste of
time and money. We have lost many plants both in the vegetable garden and inside the house, also quite a few of my fruit trees have been affected. The other problem is, behind the house, on a hillside are other cacti also infected. These are nowhere near the house, but the wind can and of course will, re-infect. Where do we stop?? Los Gallardos? Turre? Vera?” Sheila concluded: “As this

Seron improvements SERON Council is spending €600,000 on improving urban spaces and mobility in the town. The town is one of four selected in Almeria for the Ciudad Amable (Friendly city) project, which gives
more priority to pedestrians and cyclists. Road widening is planned to incorporate cycle lanes and improved pavements. Thirty per cent of the cost is to be footed by the municipality, with Andalucia
providing the remaining 70 per cent. The council is to welcome suggestions from residents before allocating specific projects for improvement, although Avenida Lepanto is considered high priority.
Adra summer sports success REPRESENTATIVES from the sports department at Adra Council have announced that more than 2,500 people attended the sports activities on offer during the summer of 2014. Between June and September of 2014, 23 competitions were held including volleyball, football and handball. Basketball, swimming, fitness training, fishing, paddle tennis, table tennis and karate were also popular with the
town’s residents. Councillor for Sports, Juan Antonio Gonzalez described the figures as positive news for the town, and enthused about the suitability of activities for all users, ages and fitness levels.
A new political party ADRA has a new political party. Called Agrupacion Independiente Abderitana (Abderitana Independant Group), the party consists of 24 residents. Special needs children suffer PARENTS of special needs children attending the new classroom at CEIP Nueva Almeria in Almeria City have criticised the Department of Education for lack of preparation at this school year’s start. Paul Ramos, parent of one of the class’s children enrolled at the new centre explained that when the children arrived to begin school on September 10,
they could not access the classroom on the first floor because the lift was not operational. “Our children either can’t walk, or have difficulty doing so,” said Ramos, “and we have to take them in the lift. So without the lift in operation it is very difficult.” However, this was not the only shock in store, as the classroom was lacking basic teaching materials.
Ramos continued: “In addition we are waiting the arrival of educational support, which is critical in this type of classroom to support the teacher and to serve the best interests of our children.” Ramos has delivered a formal letter requesting an explanation of this lack of planning and asking for an urgent solution, especially for the children.
Alleged van thief caught OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested JFMS, aged 43, on suspicion of theft from a van in Huercal de Almeria. Officers responding to reports of a man throwing stones and damaging a vehicle, raced to the Huercal de Almeria area. They located the man inside the vehicle apparently rifling through the
contents. He had allegedly broken a window on the passenger door for entry. After confirming the man’s identity, officers arrested him on suspicion of theft before notifying the owner. The man, along with case details, was taken before the magistrate’s court in Almeria City.

WhatsApp Lower tax thieves foiled for farmers GUARDIA CIVIL officers arrested a 24-year-old resident of Huercal Overa and a 20-year-old resident of Albox on suspicion of theft. The 24-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of forgery. The men allegedly stole a moped in August and attempted to sell it through WhatsApp,
providing photographs and offering to remove the chassis number. Officers intercepted one of the men at a predetermined appointment time organised on WhatsApp, and the other man shortly afterwards. Guardia Civil sources said the two men had extensive criminal records.
COUNCILLOR for Economy in Huercal Overa, Maribel Sanchez, has announced this week that the tax burden will ease for crop farmers, animal farmers and new business owners. She was referring to ICIO tax (Tax Ordinance for Construction, Installations and Works) for the creation and expansion of industrial
business, livestock, and agricultural buildings. The objective is to ease some of the area’s tax burden, in turn boosting the economic growth of the town. The tax rate is lowering by approximately 50 per cent. Sanchez explained: “The government team, once again in the process of public participation, has learned about the importance of reducing this rate to ensure growth of the different productive tissues that make up our municipal economy. This measure will directly benefit those business owners who wish to expand their companies and will cause a subsequent increase in jobs.

At a press conference, the president of the Association of Friends of the Observatory of Calar Alto, Antonio Herrera, presented the main activities of the coming season. The first was to announce an exhibition of images, taken through the observatory’s lenses to
display various celestial formations. “We want to show that the constellations have depth, bring together stars from near and far,” explained Javier Barbro, the association’s secretary, who also expressed an interest in taking the collection on a tour. Jihadist cell dismantled in Melilla A SUSPECTED terrorist cell with possible links to Islamic State (IS) has been broken up in a joint operation between Spanish and Moroccan security forces. Raids were carried out in the Spanish city of Melilla on the North African coast, as well as in the Moroccan city of Nador, according to sources from Spain’s Interior Ministry. During the early hours of Friday September 26 nine suspects - eight Moroccans and one Spaniard - were arrested, although it is unclear if they were on the point of leaving for Iraq or Syria or not. The Spanish suspect is believed to have been head of the cell. Investigations, which remain open, were brought into being by a collaborative effort between the Spanish National Police and Moroccan anti-terrorism operatives.

Second death due to Ebola THE second Spanish priest to contract the Ebola virus has died in a Madrid hospital, according to Spanish news agency Efe. The 69-year-old medically-trained priest Manuel Garcia Viejo, was admitted to Madrid’s Carlos III hospital on Monday September 22, where he underwent treatment for the disease which he contracted whilst working in the Hospital Order of San Juan de Dios in western Sierra Leone. Flown to Madrid in a medically-equipped military plane, Garcia Viejo’s condition was described as ‘grave.’ He is the second Spanish priest to die of the disease. In August, Miguel Pajares also succumbed to the illness which has ravaged West African these last few months. The World Health Organisation has warned that over €786 million is needed to treat the disease and prevent it becoming one of the worst outbreaks in history.

Barbera highest earner VALENCIA’S Mayor Rita Barberá is Spain’s highest-earning politician, according to figures in an official bulletin released by Valencia’s courts. Last year Barberá made €102,467 after tax, €96,712 of which corresponded directly to her job as the city’s mayor. Her earnings place her ahead of many major politicians including the Catalan President Artur Mas. The bulletin details how the Partido Popular (PP) politician declared post-
tax earnings of €64,115 from her role in Valencia’s Town Hall, €32,134 from the Regional Parliament, and even €464 from the Port Authority. She received another €5,757 for governmental duties. Compared to her earnings in 2012, Barberá has seen her income increase by €7,375 in 2013. The mayor’s income is noteworthy because it is set significantly higher than other politicians in the region. Spaniards unlikely to keep a secret A LARGE percentage of Spaniards are unable to keep a secret. An astonishing 89 per cent of Spaniards would not think twice before spilling the beans about a juicy secret. This is one of the conclusions drawn by a
study recently conducted by lastminute.com. The survey looked at how people behave when guarding a secret and focused on 5,500 people from six European countries, namely Spain, Italy, Germany, Ireland, France and the UK.
Researchers concluded that while Spaniards are more likely to let the cat out of the bag, they are also more inclined to keep tight-lipped about personal matters. In fact, 56 per cent of Spanish nationals surveyed said they have
something to hide, something they have never shared with anyone. This means that no other nationality in Europe is more secretive about private life than Spaniards and figures show that only one in every 10 people (11 per cent) claimed to have never blurted out a secret, said lastminute.com. As a crusader herself who does huge amounts of work for charity, she happily agreed to support the EWN campaign ‘No Means No,’ a movement against the abuse of women and the promotion of equality for women in a message that means: ‘When I say no, it really means no.’ She took the time to speak to EWN’s Anna Tildesley about her life and work…
V
IVACIOUS, bubbly and caring were the three words which immediately came to mind, when interviewing Mica Paris last night before her appearance at Old Joys Pub in Puerto Banus. Regardless of the sweltering heat and usual pre-show chaos, when there was a chance to sit with her for 10 minutes, it was like we were in a room on our own having a girlie chat. A legend in her own right,
“I really think women need all the help and encouragement they can get. We are under attack.” Mica Paris is not ‘just a singer’ as she puts it; in fact, she said: “If I was just a singer, it would drive me mad.” She is also a presenter, roving reporter and a regular fill-in host on ITV’s This Morning. And if that wasn’t enough to be getting on with, her spare time is dedicated to two charities. The legendary soul singer is the ambassador for the Amy Winehouse Trust, and the patron of the charity KIN (Kibera in Need). Mica travels to Kenya once a year to support the families in the Kibera slum and by the look on her face as she describes walking through the poverty-stricken area, it’s a very challenging and heartwrenching experience. “You gag as you walk through. I was ill for four days the last time I came back, but we have to help them,” she explained, adding: “I’m lucky, and I want people to realise
how spoilt we all are, it’s a reality check on life. “We worry about what our hair looks like or what necklace to wear, but when you go to these places, you realise that our worries are nothing compared to what these children live with.” Mica’s children also help out with the charity work and although it is too dangerous for them to go to the Kibera slums, she tells me that they do a lot of charity work around her home town of London. Fascinated by how this beautiful, 5ft 11” tall woman can look so amazing at 45 and knowing articles written about her yo-yo dieting and helterskelter weight fluctuations, when I asked her to divulge her secret of a balanced healthy lifestyle, surprisingly she didn’t talk about personal trainers, chia seeds or yoga classes. Instead she said: “It’s simple: one litre of water a day, vegetables, protein and a gym session three times a week,” and by the look on her face, when Alex looked over, a gorgeous boyfriend seems to help! Mica is embarking on two new albums to be released later this year. She is collaborating on the new Freemasons album and working with Rod Temperton, the songwriter famous for writing the historic No 1 hit for Michael Jackson, ‘Thriller.’

Police officers injured in hand grenade explosion TWO National Police bomb squad officers sustained serious injuries to their hands in an explosion. The policemen were hurt whilst dealing with a hand grenade that had been confiscated at a street market in Sevilla, said a police spokesman.
The explosion occurred at the headquarters of the bomb squad of the National Police (Tedax) in Cortijo Del Cuarto outside Sevilla, while the officers were handling a Spanish Civil War grenade found at a street market on Calle Feria. They were rushed to the Hospital
Virgen del Rocio and it appears one of them will have to have his hand amputated. The extent of the injuries suffered by the other officer remains to be determined. This is not the first time law enforcement officials have found explosive devices from the civil war. Back in July, the Guardia Civil in Aragon defused a mortar grenade that had been stuck in a pine tree for 70 years. Its deadly load was still intact. According to police sources, the grenade was high up in the tree and had gone unnoticed for the last seven decades. It is assumed the grenade missed its target and became stuck in the tree. Investors are now weighing the long term ramifications of the event. Although the Kingdom has remained united, some investors fear that the fissures opened up by the Scottish referendum may take a long time to heal, and the debate over devolution within the UK is now an open question. In the meantime, growth in the UK has slowed from its peak in the first half of 2014 and the Bank of England might not be too keen to raise interest rates as early as the market wants. wrong as prices continue falling month after month. It’s now clear that the easing of market panic after Draghi’s 2012 promise induced too much complacency. The risks are now so serious the ECB has no other choice than to act on interest rates as they preannounced at September’s meeting. By cutting interest and announcing ABS purchases, the central bank sent a very strong message to the market. Interest rates were cut to fresh record lows, and Draghi’s Central European Bank will also try to boost credit conditions further by purchasing asset-backed securities and covered bonds. Over the next three years the market will be flooded with around €500 billion. This wall of money heading towards the financial market caught investors by surprise. And while some detractors say it’s too late, this amount of stimulus from the European Central Bank will certainly be welcome.

A bulky savings account can get a person out of all sorts of financial problems; because no matter how hard we try to budget and stick to that budget, unforeseen costs always pop up. The car breaks down, an uninsured mobile phone is stolen, a fine arrives at the doorstep from traffic control or suddenly the bathroom toilet decides to go on the

implement. Using vouchers, coupons and money-off apps are considered the most popular way to make savings, with 50 per cent of people saying they regularly use them to get money off their purchases. Next on the list is taking a packed lunch to work. This is definitely a big
money saver. Preparing food at home is much more economical and healthy. And it allows you to put the money you’ve saved on dining out straight into your savings account. A simple piggy bank may not look like much on the kitchen counter top, but by adding your loose change every day - you’ll be surprised how it adds up. If a gourmet palate is leaving you strapped for cash each month then I’m afraid it’s time to downgrade to a cheaper supermarket. And while on the subject of food, never go shopping on an empty stomach. It’s hazardous for your wallet. Finally, leave the car at home and walk or use public transport. And cut up those credit cards. If you don’t have the money in cash, then you can’t buy it! Simple.

Tunnel vision of doctors can hurt the ill I DO not know all the facts but I think that Frank McDonnell MD (whatever that stands for) is jumping to conclusions when he assumes that Ashya King’s parents probably removed him from hospital to avoid blood transfusions and opted for “alternative” (his quotation marks, not mine) treatment. Firstly, although I did read just once that Mr and Mrs King were Jehovah’s Witnesses, nowhere was it ever suggested that they used their religious beliefs to deny their son treatment. In fact even the hospital made it clear that there had been no objection to treatment on these grounds. Secondly, proton beam treatment is not ‘alternative’ but another form of cancer therapy not available on the NHS or in the UK. It is more likely the doctor in question was convinced of the accuracy of his own diagnosis and worried that another hospital might prove him wrong. Many years ago my then 13year-old son was very ill in Northwick Park Hospital in London. The paediatric gastroenterologist there was so convinced my son was coeliac that he performed an endoscopy without any sedative - three times, because he couldn’t get the test results he expected. When we wrapped our frail son in a blanket and took him out of that hospital we were told not to bring him back and all his medical notes were ‘lost.’ At St Bartholomew’s Hospital he was correctly diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and was soon into remission. My sister had a beautiful little girl who went to America with the help of the NHS for treatment. However, the treatment did not work and seven months and two weeks before her 10th birthday she gave up the fight, so I do know how it feels to have a very sick child. Thirdly being made a ward of court is a rare event in the UK in these circumstances. Legislation continues to be interpreted in different ways so there needs to be a consideration of many factors for a more holistic approach.
Fourthly, to state that treatment in the UK is the only hope for the child is completely ridiculous and assumes there is no other sophisticated treatment available that respects the wishes of the parents. Why Frank McDonnell thinks that the wishes of the state should over-ride the wishes of the parent in any event is not stated. Equal praise WE have just returned from a 14week stay in our home in England and a friend had kept the Your Say page where Lily Lucy wrote about my original letter praising the Spanish health service. We share our time between Spain and the UK and are in a position to make comparisons between the two. Not that I intended any criticism whatsoever to the UK National Health Service. I think it is superb although due to the enormous pressure that A & E departments are under owing to lack of staff, waiting times tend to be quite extended for nonemergency patients. Uncaring doctor is a disgrace

HY is it that almost every time there is a scandal concerning UK doctors, the offending practitioner has an almost unpronounceable name? This latest incident where a local GP refused to treat an elderly lady who fell down just outside his practice is no exception. Christopher Uwagboe failed to attend to the poor 88-yearold woman because - wait for it - he was ‘not first aid trained’. Did you ever hear such pure unadulterated poppycock in your whole life? How can a doctor, who presumably goes through years of medical education, not be familiar with a procedure practised by the Boy Scouts? Did he somehow do a Miliband and miss a bit? Well, whatever the reason, his decision to remain ensconced in his surgery,
hiding behind what also appeared to be an extremely rude and equally uncaring receptionist, is a disgrace. Let us just hope that his patients are so disgusted they give his surgery a wide berth in the future and hit this incompetent right where it hurts, in his no doubt, well stuffed pockets. Did anyone stay awake all the way through Ed Miliband’s diatribe at the Labour Party Conference? What an intelligence-insulting load of bull. How anyone in their right mind could want to elect the likes of him and Balls is quite beyond me. These people are the same individuals who left the country bankrupt. One even left a note for his successor informing him that there was no money left to work with! Jeremy Paxman moves to Channel 4 to anchor General Election coverage Richard Shanley

EREMY PAXMAN will anchor the 2015 General Election coverage on Channel 4. The former Newsnight presenter will head up the evening, with further details of the coverage to be announced in the coming months. Paxman said: “There are new and interesting questions to ask about the way we choose our governments. This should be fun.” Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer Jay Hunt said: “Jeremy is a compelling presenter and makes truly unmissable TV for those big political moments. His sense of mischief and danger make him a fantastic fit with

F course we had rains back in the day. When there were dark clouds reported anywhere in Andalucia two things happened: (1) you started cursing Endesa (then called Sevillana) and (2) you started stocking up provisions. Back then, even the slightest hint or smell of a drop of water and all power stations within a thousand miles were shut down. So, even if it was bright and sunny and pleasant, you had no electricity at home. A criminal act against ice. The ferreterias thrived! We often complained they were all owned by Sevillana as people queued up for miles to obtain the essential life supplements; sales of ice rose dramatically, as did those of whisky, canned

especially needed to acknowledge publicly their virtuosity and propriety. The devil’s wet hands were just such an impropriety that required acknowledgement in an ostentatious manner. Ladies simply didn’t run for cover but shrieked for dear life as they bolted so as to not be touched by him with the wet and dripping hands. Virtue in the country is
bone dry and endless. Whereas the rain was such a stark and evil contrast to decades of sunny living it was viewed as an enemy of the most formidable order. Roads were washed away in an instant, roofs leaked like sieves, rivers of water poured under the doors and through the windows of homes that had stood like monuments for centuries, only to be torn asunder by the gentle and wet caresses of the new malicious intruder. Minds too were swept away in the cacophony and pandemonium that ensued. I once instructed a Spanish secretary to write an important note to someone in the town hall. She rebuked me by saying: “How can I do such an important subject when it is raining outside?” I glanced outside to the grey sheets of water hindering vision of more than 20 metres and concurred with her. Nothing could be thought or done until the demon storm had passed and the true damages assessed. The everyday world became discombobulated and flipped. Nothing would soothe it until Mr Sun reappeared. Someone always suffered immensely while others escaped with just repair work.

More faces than a town hall clock was horrified that I should take such pictures yet they were typical holiday brochure content. Meanwhile, on newsagents bottom shelves are magazines aimed at pubescent girls, the contents so torrid they would make a sailor blush. In less censorious times there was a time and place for everything including pornography. This was not in children’s school text books. There was probably more sauciness and eye-brow raising behaviour to be found in 19th Century music halls than in 1970’s television studios. Have we decided? Are we prurient or prudish? We are certainly hypocritical. Society today has more faces than a town hall clock. We get ourselves in a tizzy because women of some faiths wear burqas or niqab veil. There is no Koran requirement for them to do so. Let’s stop getting hot under the collar about the dress preferences of some Muslim offshoots. It is none of our business, we
have enough problems of a moral nature of our own without wagging the finger at others. Western Christianity has its share of odd religious sects. Do you open the door to a Jehovah’s Witness? Born again evangelists of the United States make your hair curl? The multi-wife Mormons are a strange bunch but okay because they are not Muslim. How many of us discard their ways and adopt simpler Amish lifestyles? To preserve female modesty some Muslim women do cover up. Why do Westerners want to strip them of their clothes and their modesty; deprive them of respect, their menfolk of dignity? We rant about being able to see only the eyes of clad Muslim women. The less bigoted know that a woman’s eyes are the most appealing part of a woman’s anatomy. Ironically, the eyes are the only part of Western woman covered up when she is wearing little else but sunglasses. Many faiths, not just Muslim, are offended that strangers see parts of sunbathing or partying Western woman that should be seen only in bedrooms or by their gynaecologist. In truth, when it comes to close minds, there isn’t that much between ourselves and various extreme sects.
Being a success means many different things

E foolishly claim ours is an enlightened society. We war on nations we feel are in desperate need of a little of our take on liberation. We mock Victorian bashfulness in covering the legs of tables, which they never did. In many ways the Victorians were far more liberated than we are. Better educated, less bigoted, they were simply more discreet about it. They could read books since burnt on the bonfires of political correctness. Such is current hysteria over grey area sex that men dare not stroll past playing fields for fear of being labelled a pervert. I am surprised we don’t throw tablecloths over Victorian works of art that depict children bathers. A newspaper published my photographs of youngsters happily splashing about in the surf of a local beach. A British friend

Animal Hotel - it’s all about the animals WHEN you enter a business and are greeted by wagging tails and happy furry faces, you can’t help but smile. That happens upon entering the Animal Hotel, owned and managed by Bo and Antoinette. After going through several gates (to ensure the security of your fluffy companions) you enter the kennel area. Outdoor areas are spacious and airy, and covered during the summer, while indoor areas are heated during the winter. There are five large play areas for twice daily exercise, with or without pals. All dogs sleep inside to protect them from the elements and the leishmaniosis mosquito, plus window screens are fitted and mosquito lamps inside that burn any bugs. The cats are housed separately, so they feel safe and secure. Again,
their pens are spacious and they have their own area complete with furniture and things they can climb and explore, just like at home. The cats are very content, and enjoy the attention from their cat mummy, Antoinette. Bo and Antoinette put you at ease, showing you around the hotel, fully explaining everything so you are reassured of the highest standards of

Both are enthusiastic about the business and the animals and have calming personalities that the animals and their owners appreciate.
You can join their animal behaviour courses, training owners to interact with their pets using positive reinforcement. They work closely with local schools, educating about animal care and respect. This year was the third time that the hotel welcomed a group of
mentally disabled people who enjoyed spending time with the animals, feeding them and playing. It is no secret that dogs can help sick people. The centre has therapy dogs, owned by Bo and Antoinette who visit local centres with autism and Alzheimer’s.
Transporting pets can be a minefield, but the Animal Hotel, as a fully legal business, uses Traces (TRAde Control and Expert System), working with the authorities to ensure everything runs smoothly, legally and safely.

German researchers claim that the longer an athlete trains, the more damage they cause to their teeth. This is because exercising reduced the amount of saliva they produced and the more alkaline it became. Alkaline saliva works to encourage the growth of plaque bacteria on teeth. For every extra hour of training each week, the study found an increased risk of a person needing fillings, or having decayed or missing teeth. The study backs up previous research which revealed the poor condition of the teeth of athletes competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Three-quarters of the 278 athletes competing in the Games had gum disease, while half had cavities and tooth erosion.

Sleep: is your child getting enough? SLEEP is one of the most important habits to restore physical and mental balance, especially when it comes to children. Now school has started again, it is time to get back into the routine of early nights as it is essential for the development and welfare of the child. Primary care paediatricians recommend the following tips to help children adapt to the routine: 1. Try and keep regular sleep schedules, even at the weekend.
RESTORING BALANCE: Children need at least 9-10 hours’ sleep a night. 2. Having regular times for meals will also help with a sleeping routine. 4. Avoid stimulating activities in the final hour before bedtime. 5. If your child enjoys a nap, keep it short,
between 30 and 45 minutes and early in the afternoon so bedtime is not pushed back too late. 6. Avoid allowing your child to fall asleep with the TV on, as this is believed to decrease the
depth of sleep. It is also advisable not to place a TV or electronics in the bedroom. Children aged between three and eight years old should sleep at least 9-10 hours a night.
Experimental Spanish drug cures half of all patients with breast cancer SPANISH scientists have created a new drug which could cure half of breast cancer cases. The experimental drug, called nintedanib, causes, in combination with standard chemotherapy with paclitaxel, a total remission of tumours in 50 per cent of patients with early breast cancer HER2-negative, the most common type of breast cancer types. These are the findings of a first phase clinical trial sponsored by the National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) through the Clinical Research Unit of Breast Cancer.
Miguel Angel Quintela, Head of the CNIO, said: “The combination of drugs has proved to be a success, since it has proven to be completely safe and has yielded rates of complete cure of 50 per cent.” The trial included 10 patients with HER2-negative breast cancer, all in early stages of the disease. In view of the results, the institution has already launched a large-scale clinical study for phase two to validate the work in a larger number of patients. The results are expected in early 2015.

ONE of the joys of having a property in Spain is the pleasure of experiencing a colourful garden at Christmas. A garden that motivates you to sit out and enjoy the winter sun and perhaps even eat Christmas lunch outdoors before a glass of brandy and hot mince pies in front of a roaring log fire as the afternoon cools off. There are five main things to be done: 1. Resist doing the major annual garden cut back in the autumn as you would in northern Europe. The cut back is best done during the months of January and February. Earlier will mean few flowers in December. 2. Throughout the autumn aim to prolong the flowering of existing perennials and shrubs by continuously deadheading as soon as flowers die and the cutting back of unsightly branches to stimulate new flowering shoots. If a dry autumn also continue to water. 3. Stimulate the early flowering of shrubs and trees that often do not flower until early to mid January. The three main requirements are to plant selected plants in south facing beds sheltered from cold winds, to keep plants watered in garden beds or containers and to feed with a high potassium feed. 4. If your garden is not already fully planted plant up some of the shrubs and trees we list below during October and November. 5. Purchase a selection of plants in flower just before
SPECTACULAR: The early flowering mimosa will be covered in yellow flowers. Christmas. These can be for sunny spots in the garden, the front step and porch or covered terrace. We list below some of the garden plants that can be in flower at Christmas. The strawberry tree (arbutus unedo) which also has bright red fruits to brighten a corner of the garden. The fruits are edible but we prefer to leave them for wild birds. The galan de noche that might be persuaded to pump out its heavy perfume on Christmas Eve. Of the early flowering trees the delebeta and bon accuel varieties of mimosa are spectacular with their network of branches covered in masses of yellow flowers. Shrubs Lantanas are reliable in most gardens and also hibiscus in warmer spots. Likewise roses if they have been deadheaded, watered
and fed during the autumn. Poinsettias can replace a garden Christmas tree. Climbing shrubs. Bougainvilleas, bignonias, blue and white solanums and perfumed white and yellow varieties of jasmines can produce spectacular year end displays. Perennials The frutescens and coronarium chrysanthemums and euryops daisy give reliable colour in many gardens. If you are very lucky a few margeritas may still be in flower. Succulents Several succulents can come into flower around Christmas notably the red hot pocker aloes and the aeoniums with their bright yellow spires of flowers and the various varieties of Christmas cacti. Winter annuals The most reliable for colourful displays are the
seasonal pansies, busy lizzies, stocks, wallflowers and also petunias which are now available almost all the year round. Christmas bulbs Our favourites include pots of specimen amaryllis and hyacinths, and in warm corners of rockeries anenomies, crocuses, miniature daffodils and freesias. These bulbs need to be planted as soon as possible.

THE clinical signs of pseudo pregnancy range from subtle to extreme. In some cases, they are so convincing that even experienced breeders are confident that a litter is coming. Signs include behavioural changes (anorexia or appetite fluctuations, whining, restlessness, signs of aggression, depression, or anxiety), maternal behaviour, mammary problems, vomiting and abdominal distension. It is not difficult to diagnose false pregnancy in dogs. If the animal went through a heat cycle six to 12 weeks

Radiographs and ultrasound can be used to conclusively confirm the presence or absence of pregnancy, and no additional blood, urine or other tests should be necessary.
Radiographs and ultrasound are also useful to rule out the possibility of a serious condition called pyometra which is an accumulation of pus inside the uterus from bacterial infection. Pyometra can be lifethreatening and must be treated as an emergency. It is uncommon, but still possible, signs of false pregnancy will appear in a bitch who actually became pregnant and then either aborted or reabsorbed her puppies, in which case the risk of developing pyometra increases dramatically. Unless you are showing your bitch I strongly recommend that they are spayed before the first heat. Vets have different opinions, some agree with me others say after the first heat. From a behavioural point of view the earlier we teach and train our pets the better.

MANY accidents occur on urban roads, and in many cases, pedestrians are the victims. According to the DGT, 33 per cent of pedestrians killed on urban roads were over the age of 65. For this reason, Liberty Seguros, together with RACE (Royal Automobile Club of Spain) are conducting an awareness campaign in Spain, under the name of ‘Senior Mobility, the way forward’ aimed at older people in order to reduce the number of these accidents. This is to raise awareness for the over 65-year-old population for safer mobility with useful tips and recommendations. The project will cover the Spanish geography and actions will be developed in the cities of Granada, Alicante, Salamanca and Santiago de Compostela, amongst others. The awareness campaign will be based primarily on a ‘road show’ that will feature a mobile information room and training on road safety, especially for those over 65, as well as on other aspects that can affect ones safety, like the importance of healthy

Albox is getting a facelift WORK has begun to repair Albox pavements and improve green spaces throughout the municipality. Mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, said: “Albox council plans over the next 10 months to carry out a plan of beautification and infrastructure improvements.” Councillor Jose Campoy explained the plan consists of two projects, both of which have begun. The first consists of the construction and refurbishment of
walls and paving throughout the town, as well as channelling for water flow. “The works making good progress have enabled the recent completion of a new shelter and imminent start of improvements to Calle Amistad,” said Campoy. He said: “Employees are working on repair and beautification of gardens and parkland.” Campoy stressed the speed and success of the first stage, with work
on Calle Santuario’s pavements being completed within a week. “The work rate will remain steady in the coming months, changing the face of much of our town,” he concluded. Meanwhile Rogelio Mena described the management of the PFEA, who control the maintenance and repairs of public areas in the town, as developing in a more efficient way after the renewal of the agreement with the province of Almeria in 2013.

The campaign aims to help alleviate the struggle that many families suffer at the beginning of the school year. Fabia will be available in 2015: the 55 kW (75 PS) 1.4 TDI Fabia GreenLine. It has a diesel consumption of only 3.1 l/100km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of just 82 g/km. The Fabia also has innovative safety and comfort systems that were more likely to be seen in higher vehicle classes. Available for the first time in a Fabia is the Front Assistant with integrated City Emergency Braking Function and the MultiCollision Brake. BTCC - No joy for my fellow Black Countryman Matt Neal in last Sunday’s 25th round of this season’s Touring Car races at Silverstone, the overall result being Jason Plato (1st), Colin Turkington (2nd) and Mat Jackson (3rd). FORMULA 1 - Right now the cars and crews are in Japan for Sunday’s F1 Grand Prix at Suzuka where Lewis Hamilton will be aiming to extend his lead over Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg in the driver’s championship. GYMNASTICS - The World Artistic championships take place in China from October 312 and I expect GB competitors to collect a few medals. MY CHOICE Although technically it’s not sport, my tip to win BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing trophy this year is lead singer of The Saturdays pop group, Frankie Bridge (wife of footballer Wayne) and Kevin Clifton from Grimsby.

Monthly Medal at Aguilon with a twist THE 19th Hole GS played their Monthly Medal at Aguilon. For a change they played the slope with players nominating which tee they wished to play from thereby varying their handicap. Sean Curtis easily took the medal, scoring a net 74
playing from the white tees, with Nigel Greenwood playing from the yellow tees in second place with a net 77 on countback from Dave Sharpe on the same points but playing from the white tees. In the Ladies Medal no one could get close to Nekana Galindez.
Playing from the yellow tees, she scored a net 73 with Chris Dow in second place with a net 77, playing from the red tees. Chris completed a really good day by scoring a two on the eighth and a Nearest the Pin on the 12th. The 19th hole GS arranges weekly games at various courses in the area, with their home course, which is played fortnightly being Aguilon. TEAM CRT Racing’s David Slader has been crowned a champion after their latest race despite a bad dose of the flu. There was a good turnout at the Copa de España de Velocidad motorcycle race in Valencia. Team CRT Racing turned up with their main rider David Slader on top of the MotoDes championship needing just a top 10 finish to win the championship.
The weather did not help as all weekend there were on and off showers. On Sunday morning, David came down with the flu. The race turned out to be hard for the team rider but he managed to hold on and take a well-deserved second place.
