Illegal homes are to be reprieved VIRTUALLY all ‘illegal’ properties in Albox could be ‘saved’ by new legislative changes proposed by the Junta de Andalucia. According to Albox Mayor Rogelio Mena, 500 properties in the municipality will be made legal by Junta President Susana Diaz’s proposals; that is just about all of those currently in a legal limbo. Across Andalucia there are more than 300,000 houses built on rural land which are in a state of legal uncertainty. “We are going to respond to the situation which affects thousands of families and which cannot be ignored by the administration,” said Diaz, (pictured on a visit to Albox). She continued: “This government is going to propose to Parliament a change to Article 185 of the Planning Law of Andalucia which will make it possible to regularise the thousands and thousands of houses in Andalucia.” Maura Hillen, President of AUAN, an organisation which fights for the legalisation of properties and the accountability of decision-makers who have allowed the illegal builds to occur, said: “Finally there seems to be a
consensus not only social but also political regarding illegal houses in Andalucia. The facts are that there are at least 300,000 illegal houses in Andalucia and you can’t knock them all down; therefore, we need to seek a solution. She added: “It is not acceptable to ignore these houses, pretending that they do not exist because there are thousands of houses that may be affecting the environment which are currently
not being recognised or regulated.” Meanwhile, a Sevilla court suspended the demolition of an illegal construction, the first time a demolition order has been reversed because of the regularisation decree. Once legalised, the owners will be able to register ownership of the property and carry out other activities previously not allowed including granting a mortgage.

CELEBRATING: More than 2,400 visitors attended the British Spanish integration day.
Integration day a success at weekend ACCORDING to data provided by Huercal Overa Town Hall, more than 2,400 visitors attended the British Spanish integration day in Huercal Overa at the weekend. Attendees enjoyed a mix of dancing, music and the traditional cuisine from both nationalities in a day that brought the entire town together in a spirit of unity. The council took over the cost of buying the ingredients for the food and the profits went to local associations for issuing to local causes.
The welcome ceremony was attended by Mayor Domingo Fernandez, as well as representatives from the Huercal Overa Council and the British Honorary Consul for Almeria, Alejandria Guerrero Salvador. The mayor said: “This is a day of celebration for the citizens of both nationalities to get to know each other better. More than 1,200 British citizens live in Huercal Overa. Today they have taught us their traditions and customs and have learned ours in return.”

Thief arrested yet again OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested a man for three house burglaries just days after he was arrested for two others. Officers from Canjayar arrested MGH, aged 23 and a resident of Ohanes, on suspicion of three counts of theft. The arrest came after an investigation of house thefts in Ohanes. The thief had
allegedly gained access after forcing windows before removing appliances, furniture and other valuables from the homes. Officers were able to identify MGH after discovering his mobile phone had been left in one of the burgled homes. When they discovered the identity of MGH they were also able to ascertain
that it was the same man they had arrested only days earlier for two additional burglaries. This brings the total to five separate cases of theft committed by the detainee, four houses and one vehicle. The Guardia Civil have kept the investigation open and are not ruling out further arrests.

HE countdown has started for one of the biggest and most important races in the yachting world, and all eyes will be on Spain. The Volvo Ocean Race, formerly the Whitbread Round the World Race, is held every three years, and is hugely anticipated in the yachting world. This time round the much hyped event will be starting from Alicante on the Costa Brava, for the third time in a row and the fourth time from a Spanish port - in 2005 it started from Vigo. The previous eight races had started from England - four times from Portsmouth and four from Southampton. The 2014-15 race will be held over eight stages

Winter fuel allowance debate
T
HE winter fuel allowance debate rages on amongst expatriate pensioners. The news that last year the number of expats claiming the British allowance whilst living in Spain rose by 44 per cent will further enflame the debate. Those who claim it, see nothing wrong with doing so. After all they have paid in all their lives for their pension, so why should they miss out because they live abroad? But this is a payment to help people keep warm in freezing weather more common in the UK, not those living in sunny Spain, goes the argument against. Leaving aside the fact that many parts of Spain - and not all that far inland either - do get very chilly indeed in the winter, both arguments miss the point. That is that NO winter fuel
payment should be made at all, whether here in Spain or back in the UK. Instead the British government should pay people a decent pension. That would mean no one would need an extra payment. To argue that one of the wealthiest countries in the world cannot afford it is disingenuous. There are plenty of other things the government could cut back on. Pensioners deserve better.
Missile step SPAIN is sending six missile launchers and 130 personnel to Turkey as part of a NATO deployment to discourage any thoughts of an ISIL Islamist invasion. While every little helps, it is going to take more than that.

Hashing around Santopetar area EL CORDOBES cafe in Santopetar was the meeting point for the hashers ready for their next run and walk. Santopetar is a small village situated on a ridge a little way south of Taberno. A few keen hashers arrived on their bikes and gathered for the usual coffee and chat before making their way to the circle adjacent to the community exercise area. The Hares explained the route but the first challenge was to spend two minutes on the exercise machines, causing much hilarity and then off they went. The runners disappeared downhill towards the Rambla de Taberno with the walkers following at a much more leisurely pace.
EXERCISE MACHINES: Were the first challenge. The runners eventually got up to the next village where cunningly hidden marks caused them a 20 minute detour, but they managed to get back on track. The walkers proceeded on their loop around leaving one hasher posing as the Little Mermaid perched on a rocky outcrop waiting for the runners to appear. They didn’t so she rejoined the group and then waxed lyrically about healthy eating and the correct diet to follow. This all went to pot when they returned to the bar to stuff themselves with chips, beef burgers, spicy sausages and black pudding. The runners managed to catch up with the walkers as they re-entered the village to the circle. The obligatory games commenced and a new member was welcomed to the group. Songs were sung and they made their way back to the bar and the ‘healthy diets’ and much beer. The hash ended with lots of laughter,

New children’s book released FOLLOWING the release of her two adult novels earlier this year, Jane Finch came across some animal stories she had written years ago when her son was young and they visited zoos together. Illustrations are provided by Aysha Samrin, an art student at Southampton University, who brought the colourful characters to life in the new book, Crazy Zoo. Aimed at children aged seven to 11, this book enters the day to day world of the zoo animals. Claude the lovesick camel, Marcus the meerkat who thinks he’s too short, a polar bear who hates cold water, a cranky crocodile, and lots more. The star is Bridget the brolga bird, who manages to find ways to solve the mini crises that occur daily. Look behind the scenes at the world’s craziest zoo. Jane Finch also has several other children’s story books scheduled for release prior to Christmas.

Sports enrolment in Huercal Overa HUERCAL OVERA has opened enrolment for its sports workshops and sports schools. Registration is available at the sports pavilion and offers a wide range of sports to keep the youngsters busy. Prices for the sports schools are fixed at last year’s level with additional discounts for those who opt for more than one sport. The cost is €60 for the first sport, €41 the second and €24 the third. There are also family discounts available. Payment is possible by cash and credit card or by payment at the Cajamar bank. Sports workshops are priced at €15 per month or €40 per quarter. Sports include ballet, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, ria pita (dance style) salsa, self defence and tai chi. Watch your step in Las Colinas THIRTY volunteers comprised of residents and colleagues of Ecologists in Action met at Las Colinas for a day of clearing up dog mess. The exercise yielded approximately 150 kilos of excrement, according to the organisers, who once again denounced the town of Las Colinas for its passivity in tackling
this ongoing issue. President of the residents’ association of Las Colinas, Juan Carlos Oyonarte, praised the volunteers for their help. He described the area as unsanitary and said that until the town’s problems were solved, the mess would continue to accumulate. The association said the
council had not acted against canine excrement since 2011 and that it not only refused to clear it from abandoned plots but also had not tackled the problem in public places. The neighbourhood association said that in a previous initiative it had placed flags pointing out droppings in a space of 800 square metres. It
accused the municipal services of going to one of the areas and removing just the flags, leaving the excrement in place. According to the association’s estimates there could be as much as 50,000 droppings in the 50,000 square metres of abandoned and undeveloped lots in Las Colinas.
Ebola scare for Almeria ALMERIA Hospital, Torrecardenas, had a shock when a Guinean man entered a Roquetas de Mar health centre with a suspected case of the Ebola virus. He has since been cleared of the disease, although he was then diagnosed with malaria.
The man, aged 36, who was showing Ebola-like symptoms, had just returned from an affected area in Africa, and was within the 21-day incubation period. Medical staff followed quarantine protocol and sent samples to Madrid for testing.

Traps seized in Lucar area ILLEGAL hunting traps used for catching partridges have been found in Lucar. The traps are designed to be operated manually from a distance. The discovery of the traps was made during routine surveillance by agents from the ministry of agriculture, fisheries and environment. The owner of the land was informed, while the traps have been stored in ministry units at Seron. In July, Almeria’s department of Environment and Land Management suspended hunting use on 114 acres of ground close to Ragol after the discovery of two fox carcasses. The foxes tested positive for poison. A large hunting cage for hunting boar was found in a banned area of Cabo de Gata, also in July.

Campaigning for dog beaches CAMPAIGNS to claim areas of beaches for dogs are gaining momentum. The first demonstration to campaign for dog areas on beaches attracted just 50 people, but this time almost 200 supporters turned up.
Organisers, Vecinos Unidos Roquetas, celebrated the success of the demonstration in an area where activities of this type are not usually successful. They have announced another demonstration for approximately six weeks time. By then they hope

Centre is to be clarified MAYOR of Nijar, Antonio Jesus Rodriguez, has defended a project to build a shopping centre in San Jose. The mayor has dismissed as nonsense all criticism made by environmental groups. The shopping area is planned at the entrance to the forest track that leads to the beaches of Genoese, Monsul and Cala Carbon. The high court of justice in Andalucia has provisionally suspended development in the area until it clarifies what the classification of the land is and the level of the protection.
Prostitution ring broken LOCAL POLICE in Roquetas de Mar have dismantled a prostitution ring and arrested a 37year-old woman suspected of being the Madame. The investigation began when the police were involved in an incident that led to the discovery of a woman staying illegally in Spain with her young child. The woman, aged 20, agreed
to cooperate with police in exchange for social support. Police discovered a property was being used for illegal prostitution and arrested the Madame. In the basement of the property, police discovered that alcohol was being sold without permits and half a dozen girls, all relatives of the Madame, were being sold for sex illegally.
Alboloduy harvest day AGRICULTURE deputy Oscar Liria launched the Alboloduy harvest day and the Alpujarra market at the weekend. This was the fourth edition of the harvest day, which included a day of family-friendly activities including the transporting of the grapes,

Walk For Life this Saturday THIS Saturday September 27 is Arboleas’ Walk for Life with sponsored participants setting off to raise money for charity. The walk starts at 5pm from Arboleas Town Hall. The fun starts outside the town hall in Arboleas at 4pm with music and entertainment. There is to be an ice bucket challenge before the walk and during the evening with various staff from Sophia’s taking part, raising extra money for cancer support. Food and refreshments are available during the day and there is a fun dog show to enjoy after the walk. Just before the dog show, there is a demonstration by the Asylum MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Almanzora team from Sophia’s Wellness Centre. All monies raised will go to cancer support in the local area.
The Dames would like to invite everyone to come along and enjoy a glass of Bucks Fizz or a soft drink, to view jewellery from TINAKA, but most of all meet and greet the other members that you have not seen during the summer. New friendly city projects benefit ALMERIA City, Pulpi, Rioja and Seron are to benefit from a new initiative called ‘Friendly City’ which improves urban mobility and gives greater priority to pedestrians and cyclists. The mayors of all the towns met with Elena Cortes, councillor for Public Works and Housing to discuss the changes and
how they will be developed in each area. Almeria City will have partial pedestrianisation of Plaza Muñoz. The work will be carried out in two phases. The first is to reduce parking in Marquez, Roma, Reina and Pizarro streets to improve accessibility. The second phase will pedestrianise Plaza Muñoz and install street furniture and trees. Seron will have its existing green area connected with Avenida Lepanto in the stretch of the A-1132. Second hunting fair attracts thousands HUERCAL OVERA hosted its second hunting fair, Levancaza, this weekend attracting 42 exhibitors and thousands of visitors. Mayor Domingo Fernandez inaugurated the event with a number of representatives from the town council, together with organisers of the fair, Ginez Navarro and Pablo Martinez. Forty two exhibitors from the area displayed their wares at Levancaza, and a number of displays were held on both days of the exhibition including dog hunting and falconry displays. Visitors browsed displays of animals, birds and hunting equipment, and were also able to sit the course for hunting licences by appointment. Female partridges in small cages ready for attracting males in rows, stuffed boars and deer heads, rifles, camping gear, hunt clothing and equipment, falconers, off-road vehicles and even a machine gun were on offer for eager buyers. Although at time of press, the final

Asprodalba golf day fundraiser THIS Saturday September 27 is Valle del Este golf society’s charity competition raising money for Asprodalba. The event has already attracted 72 players and local businesses have sponsored each of the golf holes in aid of the charity. Vera school pupils have handmade the trophies for the winning team. After the competition there will be an auction and raffle. It is hoped this year will exceed last year’s figure of €1,500. Asprodalba is a nonprofit organisation that helps improve the quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities throughout the province of Almeria. New centre in Huercal Overa MAYOR Domingo Fernandez has opened the new premises of the Centre for Women in Huercal Overa, a building that has become a reality after a €50,000 refurbishment. The opening ceremony was attended by

Romería goes off with a bang during festivities FESTIVAL goers in Dalías, Almeria, had a lucky escape after an explosion went off right in the middle of the festivities. Last Sunday’s Romería del Cristo de la Luz is one of the area’s most popular events, but this year revellers were left shaken
after an explosion in the marketplace caused some minor structural damage, but fortunately no injuries. At around 1pm, according to the accident and emergency services, the explosion - believed to have been caused by fireworks stored in the area
- resulted in damage to the roof of the building and some broken windows. Event organisers, together with pyrotechnicians responsible for the fireworks, decided to cancel the planned release of fireworks in the historic centre after the incident.

Firework displays are a staple of the event, and this year more than 1,300 kilos of rockets were planned.

Mother guilty of killing two newborns A WOMAN from Sevilla accused of killing and freezing her two newborn babies has been found guilty. The jury of five men and four women arrived at the conclusion that the defendant had deliberately taken the lives of her children. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is asking for a 40year sentence for murder with malice aforethought. To reach their verdict, the jury took into consideration the testimony of the forensic coroners who performed the post-mortem examination on the two infants. Their report stated that the victims had breathed once outside the womb and were later drowned. There was a 99 per cent certainty that the babies had died a violent death as a result of submersion, they said. “The first baby’s stomach was dilated and had an aqueous content that had been swallowed,” said the experts.
However, a state’s evidence witness, expert in forensic medicine, said: “I am certain, 100 per cent certain, that there was no drowning.” The defendant, identified as Sara L.H., maintained during the trial that the first baby had been stillborn and that she had no recollection whatsoever of the second birth. During his closing argument, the public prosecutor said the mother was “a monster” and “an evil person,” capable of “looking her babies in the eye and of killing them.” The verdict was also based on the testimony of two psychiatrists from the Institute of Legal Medicine in Sevilla who examined the defendant after her arrest in 2012. According to them, it was 100 per cent certain that she had been in full possession of her mental faculties and had deliberately killed her children, fully aware of what was going on.

New household waste centre for Huercal Overa to be available soon RESIDENTS of Huercal Overa will soon have a new centre to deposit household waste that is not suitable for collection by existing methods. The new ‘Punto Limpio’ will be located next to the municipal warehouse on land donated by the council. The centre is a voluntarily controlled waste collection area that complements the existing systems in the town. There will be five metal containers located in a loading area for

Germans were third, with a significant 1,290,777 vacationers, picking the Balearics and Canaries as their chosen destinations. Spain, however, saw a drop in Russian tourism by 8.6 per cent.

250 marihuana plants seized MORE than 250 marihuana plants have been seized during an investigation by officers from the Guardia Civil in Benahadux on Sunday. Officers arrested FGS aged 26, a resident of Benahadux, and seized 254 marihuana plants. The investigation began when officers were alerted to a strong odour in one of Benahadux’s streets. Officers visited the property but found nothing at first glance and the occupant told them to ignore the smell. However, the odour was extremely strong on the lower floor of the building and the officers spotted loose floor boards and Styrofoam panelling. Once the slats were removed the officers found two basement rooms containing the plants and an array of lighting equipment as well as a water pump, extractor fan and additional equipment for the cultivation of marihuana. The details of the crime and the 26-year-old man have been handed to the magistrates’ court in Almeria.

Missile aid for Turkey SPAIN’S Defence Minister Pedro Morenés has announced that Spain is to deploy anti-aircraft missiles in Turkey. The promise comes after the recent NATO summit in Wales, which focused on the escalating crises in Ukraine and Syria. Spain’s commitment to Turkey is to discourage potential land invasions by Islamic State movement, ISIL, from Syria or Iraq. The taxman lurks in the stands SPAIN’S football clubs allegedly owe more tax than they admit. Instead of the €482 million that the Liga Profesional de Futbol (LPF) acknowledged at the end of last season, clubs owed €564 million, maintained Spain’s tax collecting authority. Neither did they cut their tax debt by €165 million as the LPF claimed,
Hacienda continued. Last season’s true figure stands at just €99 million and represents a 15 per cent reduction instead of the claimed 25 per cent, Hacienda argued. Possibly hoping to underline the clubs’ subsequent efforts, the LPF gave inexact figures for the preceding season, the tax authority continued. Determined to obtain its dues,
Orange bid for Jazztel ORANGE has offered €3.4 billion for Spain’s Jazztel. The CNMV, Spain’s stock market regulator, suspended trading in Jazztel shares when their value shot up by 12 per cent, hours before the deal was announced. It intends to investigate possible insider trading, the supervisor announced later. Acquiring Jazztel would give Orange approximately 1.5 million broadband subscribers and follows Vodafone’s takeover of Spanish cable provider ONO last July. “With the economy recovering, this is the moment to reinforce our presence,” said Orange CEO Stephane Richard. At the receiving end of
the €13 per share offer are Jazztel’s shareholders and its chairman, Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals, a Spanish-Cuban who is now a US citizen and owns a 14.48 per cent stake in the company. Pujals founded Telepizza in 1988 based on just one Madrid outlet and capital equivalent to €372,000. By 1999 he was able to sell out for €360.6 million and buy into Jazztel, then on the brink of insolvency, using €60 million of the Telepizza sale. If the current transaction goes through, he will now receive 14.48 per cent of the €3.4 billion that Orange is offering.

IT’S no news flash that the Spanish spoil their kids and a new survey has just confirmed it. According to research, which looked at the average amount of pocket money children receive across Europe, it’s been revealed that kids in Spain are not left short. Spanish kids are the third-best paid youngsters in the EU (after Italy and France), with those aged between five to 15 receiving €5 to €10 a week. Almost 50 per cent of parents in this country said that they don’t give their kids any pocket
money at all and that if their child needs something, then they simply discuss the purchase and buy it for their child if necessary. Therefore, almost half of young Spanish children don’t handle money. The other 50 per cent of parents, however, who do give money to their children, said that their main reason for doing so is to ensure their kids learn to respect and value money. Almost 85 per cent of those parents studied also admitted that since giving pocket money to their children

If you are a UK pensioner, receiving the state old age pension, you have the right to NHS medical treatment in the UK. If you become an official resident of Spain, with the Certificate of Residency, you have the right to transfer your medical treatment to the Spanish healthcare system. You apply to the Spanish Social Security office in your autonomous region, such as Valencia or Andalucia. They will then issue you the Spanish Social Security card which entitles you to treatment and they will assign you to a local family doctor. Each of the regions administrates health care in its territory but your card is valid in all of Spain.
The process is not automatic. You must apply for it.

they have noticed that their kids have quickly learned how to be responsible with money, through the process of trial and error. Many children who regularly receive pocket
money are also noted to save a significant portion of their allowance, which
is great practice and habit building for the future. In general, if parents can afford it, giving kids regular pocket money is a great way to develop their independence and goal setting. For example if a child wants a new video game console, then they can learn how to save to buy it. A child will see that it takes time to build up savings and will hopefully develop a sense of responsibility regarding the concept of money. It’s a good idea to provide two jars for children when you give them pocket money: one for spending and one for saving. This way they can choose how they distribute their pocket money between the jars. This also gives you a chance to teach your kids about money and its use.

IT is inevitable that from time to time there will be disagreements with customers. The customer is not always right. Some do abuse the hypothesis that the customer is king. However, most disagreements between service provider and customer are due to avoidable misunderstandings. Customer conflict can be reduced to a minimum simply by explaining precisely what he is going to get for his financial outlay. Honesty is the best policy. Never give a delivery time you cannot meet. The important thing is to explain, understand, get it in writing. Often the fault lies with the customer. In an effort to keep prices down, the client withholds information when asking for a price. The client dislikes the bill being added to but is happy to increase his expectations of what is to be done. An example of this was when my wife, who translates menus to Russian, was
asked the fee for an a la carte menu translation. Such menus can be one page or multiple pages. When asked for an attached copy the client failed to respond. One wonders how the eatery’s owner would react had a client sat down, dismissed the offer of a menu and asked: “How much for a three-course meal?” Never price over the phone or internet. If the client is vague there is a catch. Far better to see beforehand precisely what needs doing and the time to complete. Listen carefully to your customers wants. Understand and repeat them, reassure and take notes. Having put in writing a synopsis of the work to be carried out, and if possible a price breakdown, sign and leave it. When doing so explain the costs or stages at which second thoughts or exit can be met. A no nonsense business approach from the outset will weed out time wasters. It will compensate by reassuring genuine enquirers that your business is professional in its approach. It sounds tedious, but far more tedious is a disgruntled client who, apart from later challenging you, could likely destroy your business with gossip.

Beggars that make town look rundown I HAVE been in Torre del Mar since February. In that time there have always been 12 or more beggars about, mostly along a small section of the N340 main road, while others are outside supermarkets. Most are long-stay, some come and go. Of the long-stay, the majority seem to be fairly young and Spanish and they are out six or seven days a week, so obviously they are not looking for work. Many are quite well-dressed and some have the inevitable dog with them. One with a foldup chair that he brings with him settles down with a book and waits for the money to roll in. A man in a wheelchair has appeared recently but at times he moves his legs about (cramp, I suppose) and no cripple can move like that. I have seen a few deserving cases looking as though they have slept rough, but they are there for a few days and go. The rest just seem to be deadbeats who don’t want to work. Can’t the police do something about them, as these beggars make the town look rundown? Michael Hill, Torre del Mar (Malaga)
Highway code RECENTLY I read in the Euro Weekly News that the Manual de normas de Trafico 3 was available at all bookshops for €12. Bookshops in Garrucha knew nothing of it and sent me to driving schools, who said such a book at such a price does not exist! There are driving manuals for learners but apparently no single publication which comprehensively covers all the rules of the road. Rights or wrongs I DO not agree with the comments of Antonie Holtzhausen. I think the actions of the parents were foolhardy, ill thought-out and posed a risk to Ashya.
The consultant at Southampton Hospital had offered the family a second opinion and access to treatment abroad. The boy’s scans and notes could have been emailed to Prague and an opinion sought as to the suitability of proton treatment while Ashya was cared for in hospital. Instead his father chose to take the family on a long trek to sell his Spanish apartment to raise funds. In the current climate this could have taken months. What could have happened to Ashya and the other children in the meantime? This sale could have been arranged from the UK, or the father could have gone to Spain on his own. It all went horribly wrong and the UK police had no choice but to take the action they did. No doubt there will be interviews on morning TV, articles and books etc. I hope the proceeds are given to children’s cancer charities. The most important thing is

Lock it away I WAS interested in a Euro Weekly News article describing the intention to introduce parking charges and fines to Torre Del Mar and Velez-Malaga. It seems to me that these measures will restrict tourism rather than encourage it, but will presumably provide a ready revenue stream. Will tourists favour destinations without parking charges and will this affect cafes and shop keepers, for instance? Far better in my view for councils to make money by providing an improved beach experience. I had the notion of ‘beach lockers’ and looking on Google found that Bournemouth has been offering beach lockers in the UK since 2006. These provide space for visitors to store valuables whilst they enjoy the beach for £3 per day. A small price to pay to keep your smart phone and wallet safe! I calculate that these would provide roughly €1 million per year, if introduced in the Costal del Sol alone. Neil Smith, Cutar (Malaga)
Health proposal WITH large urbanisations near Punta Prima and the Torrevieja hospital and an aging population, a second health centre will soon be needed. At the back of the hospital there is another car park that is underused. Would this not be the ideal place for another centre as the Health department must already own the land? Savings could be made using modern materials such as plastic-faced polystyrene panels in place of wood, which would be more hygienic. The downside would be the salaries of doctors, nurses and staff. Of course, if you removed the natural English haters those who, were they born south of the border, would still hate the citizens of Rome, and also, despite his PR denials, southern despiser Andy Murray, plus the children, who went to the polls with no more incentive than the memory of Mel Gibson bellowing ‘freedom’ as he expired in Braveheart then I think you’d probably be looking at more of a 70/30 per cent result in favour of the no’s. Together again. Sounds like the title to a song, and a very pleasant song at that. Thank the Lord I won’t have to boo the Scottish team when it makes the next World Cup, (unless you’re playing the English of course!).

One of the biggest craw stickers to me is the four (plus one reserve) wives they are allowed under this illegal UK organisation. Apparently there are some 20,000 of these ‘arrangements’ now existing. To be honest, I have always found one wife more than enough and frankly, to my mind, they can all get on with it. But it doesn’t end there does it? Because British law only allows a single spouse, they can only claim family allowance for one. So what do they do? Simple, they impregnate the other three and claim for them on the social as unmarried mothers. It’s fraud, pure and simple. Multiply that little touch by

The least common pin number is 8068? (not any more!). The Royal Navy blasts out Britney Spears ‘Oops I’ve done it again’ to scare off Somali pirates. And the most difficult tongue twister in English is ‘Pad kid poured curd pulled cod.’ Oh, and as a final gem, if you borrowed £400 from Wonga at its standard rate for seven years, you would owe more than Britain’s national debt! Dennis Waterman confirms departure from New Tricks, now in its 11th series Richard Shanley

Gargantuan ‘berries’ perplex a stateside visitor! Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.
I
JUMP forward to the early 70s when brother Paul started another perplexing business adventure even before he had finished the last two. He decided to design and build a golf course in a hidden valley of Turre called Cortijo Grande. This was no normal feat of imagination or accomplishment, principally because he didn’t know how to play the sport himself. Yet, within days of his initial thoughts, bulldozers began meandering amongst the orange groves, trenches for irrigation were cut, hills levelled and greens made. The PJP tour de force was rolling. The result was similar to one of those magical Hollywood moments: ‘If you build it, they will come.’ And they did: dropped from the sky, drove miles to have a whack,

“Oranges?” he screamed. “Oranges like those from Florida? What are they doing over here? Hell, I had no idea they grew on trees. I always thought you dug them up like potatoes.” My mind was more than boggled and my eyes began an uncontrollable blinking. No wonder Europeans think the Yanks are so dumb. Now, this rare, historic moment wasn’t to be let go of so quickly. Karl announced that he had to take a few with him as he might not witness such an ‘apparition’ again. A truly Zen awakening. Guys from Nebraska can get that way. When spirits arrive they are not to be denied. No, he preferred to take his sweater off, tie up the sleeves, fill the garment to capacity and drag it about the course as he played, full of ‘dem berries’. “Karl, no worries, we own the golf course, you can fill the car up for all I care. Take all you want.” But no, not for a Nebraskan making his novice trip to Romantic Spain. The sacred moment was not to be placated. And so my day of golf went, hit the ball, drag the oranges, hit the ball, drag the oranges...

The owner of La Campana restaurant in Quesada said this would be more important to him than money or anything else materialistic as love and happiness mean everything. Eason of Westar Pools, Mijas, Malaga took a different slant on what she would like a lifetime supply of. “I would like a completely unlimited supply of wine, any colour and any type! That combined with good weather would be perfect.” And Geoff Jones of Computer Helpline also was looking for something edible, although a couple of wishes also made the list. “Thai curry: I’m not an extravagant person. Or I’d like to go to Hong-Kong one last time or I’d like to fly my light aircraft again.”

HEWING the fat at a restaurant table I surmised that the US will cease being a power of consequence by
2020. The European Union, the economy and foreign policy of which is largely directed by Wall Street and Washington, will find itself isolated and in a permanent state of 1980s era discord and austerity. I withered under my friend’s scorn but hardly alone in my forecast. Fast-moving global politics is to me a fascinating game; watch this space. The petrodollar is history; time is running out for the US now reeling under a $17 trillion debt. Added to by $2.38 billion each day it is predicted to be at an unsustainable Weimar $26 trillion by 2020. Ensnared by Wall Street / Washington DC policies, Western Europeans now find ourselves in a 1914 hotbed of red lines, propaganda, aggression and economic warfare. We despair of our political elite. We know our system has failed but are
clueless as to what can be done to recover governance from the failing self-serving elite. The European Union has uncomfortable similarities with pre-Perestroika era of the collapsing Soviet Union. It is fundamentally controlled by 27 unelected commissioners and two unelected Presidents; the rest is theatre for sheeple. Komsomol Pravda, a popular tabloid read by Russians living in Spain: “The EU in the worst sense of the word is very much the new USSR.” Mikhail Gorbachev: “Why is the EU trying to recreate the USSR?” This last President of the USSR introduced Perestroika (reform) so radical it brought about penury to hundreds of millions of Russians and Eastern Europeans. Circumstance will bring similar change to the 28 EU nations. The Euro and
petrodollar, undermined by competing currencies and bank-free barter; life savings, national assets and economies will be stripped by a failing economy Will we be saved by our own President Putin? On assuming office in 2000 the popular Russian president turned oligarchs into fugitives, nationalised the banks, exiled the
West’s rapacious conglomerates, and diverted Russian resources to Russia’s needs. As a consequence the Russian economy bounced back. This is what lies behind the current stand-off. The EU is now a perestroika era USSR. So, who do we vote for? First must come the realisation that sheep-like voting for rotating dictatorships keeps the corrupt political elite in place. It is not politicians who need replacing but the system of governance. An end to political parties; election by public referendum of constituency candidates with a track record in service to the community and experience, who, every 12 months must explain their previous year’s achievements. An end to conflict of interest; no public official, their families or connections, to benefit from extra reward during or after office. Such change will anyway be thrust upon us by BRICS and other trade blocs with which an isolated Europe cannot hope to compete without painful perestroika. Otherwise, the European Union, cut off from its sinking American mother ship, will become a Stalinist Europe.

Staying secure on your computer HELLO and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Yesterday, Wednesday, I went to see my mate Steve at the internet cafe in Huercal Overa. The idea was for me to start a clinic or run courses in computing to help everyone over there develop their understanding of the machine that they use every day. As I am sure you know the computers in internet cafes have a master control programme that monitors your time and prevents dangerous things being brought down to the machine. One of my tasks was to ‘clean up’ the machines and in the process removed anything that shouldn’t be on there. So, what did I remove? To start with there were

hundreds of documents that people have written in the documents folders. Some were of a sensitive nature and shouldn’t be where anyone can get to them! As a professional, it fell to me to make sure that these files were erased. Erasure is the process of overwriting a file with random ‘rubbish’ to completely remove it, as
deleting a file really doesn’t get rid of it! This I did on each of the computers that I looked at, so if you had anything on a machine that you might have wanted sorry! My best advice to anyone using an internet cafe to do anything is to have a memory stick and automatically open, save and close down all files to it. Secondly, make sure the chip is encrypted to ensure your information is safe and finally, tie a dayglow fluorescent ribbon on it so you won’t leave it plugged in there. Huercal Overa donates €6,000 to local hospice HUERCAL OVERA has provided a donation of €6,000 to the Virgen del Rio hospice. Since the current government team was installed, they have made an annual donation to help with maintenance costs of the hospice, which houses a number of elderly people from the area. Mayor Domingo Fernandez, accompanied by councillor for Culture, Antonio Lazaro, and councillor of Finance, Maribel Sanchez, held a meeting with the Mother Superior to address various issues regarding the operation of the hospice before awarding the hospice the money. The mayor said: “We are making an effort to reach all groups and try to assist them to continue their work. From the beginning of our term we have provided this fn¡inancial assistance, thus fulfilling the commitment we made to the Mother Superior. We are aware of the great work they do with adults

According to data from the Royal Institute of Chartered Accountants (RICS), foreign property investors are showing renewed interest in the country that has been the preferred retirement and holiday destination of hundreds of thousands of Germans, Brits and French and Dutch nationals.
There is now evidence of an improvement in the real-estate markets of an ever-growing number of European countries, said RICS’ chief economist Simon Rubinsohn. “Our latest test results also show evidence of an upswing in occupier demand which is ultimately key to a sustainable recovery across the continent. The results for Spain, Portugal and Ireland are particularly encouraging and broadly consistent with the
strengthening macro newsflow these countries have delivered in recent quarters,” said Rubinsohn. No other crisis-affected country in Europe is witnessing such a fast growing increase in property demand than Spain, according to RICS. In fact, for the first time in several years there has been a slight drop in unemployment and a big jump in the construction of residential properties.
Report indicates sales increase PROPERTY sales in Spain increased by 10.7 per cent in July. Provisional data released by the National Statistics Institute show that compared to last year the number of property sales rose by 10.7 per cent in July, totalling 28,583 transactions. This rise puts an end to 10 consecutive months of year-on-year declines and is actually the fifth consecutive increase after those registered between March and June. On the other hand, this growth can be traced back to the 24.7 per cent increase in the purchase
of second-hand properties, which totalled 18,082 transactions. According to Europa Press, 90 per cent of property purchases were for private homes. In fact, sales of private housing increased by 9.2 per cent compared to 2013, finally totalling 25,720 transactions. In contrast, transactions on social housing rose by 25.8 per cent compared to July 2013 and reached 2,863 operations. In July, the largest numbers of property sales per 100,000 people were recorded in Valencia (107), the Canary Islands (92) and La Rioja (91).
Andalucia continued to be at the forefront of property sales in July with 5,954 transactions, followed by Valencia (4,231) and Catalonia (4,230). In relative terms, the regions with the largest increase in property sales
compared to 2013 were Asturias (+47.1 per cent), Extremadura (+43.9 per cent) and Galicia (+24.2 per cent), whilst the most substantial decreases were recorded in La Rioja (-12.1 per cent) and Murcia (-11.8 per cent).

Not such a mini now MINIS are getting bigger with the introduction of the new five door model. By significantly expanding the wheelbase compared to the standard Mini, space has been created for three seats in the back and space to strech out: 72 millimetres more foot space and legroom, 15 millimetres more headroom and 61 millimetres more interior width at elbow height. On top of that the luggage compartment space is now 278 litres 67 litres more than in the three-door model. Those, say the manufacturer, are excellent figures in the small car premium segment. THE 19th Hole Golf Society travelled north to the beautiful Lorca Golf Resort to play a Best Two from Four Stableford competition. The weather was beautiful with a slight but cooling breeze and blue, cloudless skies conditions to match the ever improving Lorca Course.
Gary Grey, now playing off his new handicap of 26, led his team of John Ball, Geoff Smith and Nigel Greenwood to a well deserved victory with 99 points, from the Syd Walker team of Dave Denyer, Paco Ocaña Grayal and Brian Lowden on 97 points. Syd also picked up a two on the fourth whilst

IT was a rather warm day for the Friday Stableford match; however, 24 members took part in the competition at Valle del Este. First was Lloyd Dean with 35 points, second Dick Hull with 30 points and third on countback was John Clements. Nearest the Pins went to Dick Hull on the sixth and Margaret Bennett on the 14th. There were three twos which were scored by Dick Hull Lloyd Dean and John Morris.
On Tuesday there were two different format competitions and the winners of the 2/3 Stableford competition with 85 points were Sean Halligan, Paul Sedge and Daniel Sedge. The 3/4 Stableford competition was won by Sally Hill, Michael Hill, Geoff Owen and Ken Preddy with 125 points. Don’t forget the Asprodalba charity day on Saturday. To get involved, call the pro shop.
