Save local beaches call TORROX Council has called for a comprehensive plan to stabilise beaches that are constantly affected by storms. The council is to ask the General Coasts Department of Spain’s Central Government to formulate and execute a plan to protect and improve the beaches that are the lifeblood of the tourism industry. Costa’s best summer ever HOTELS along the Costa del Sol have had the best summer since tourism records began, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). During the months of July and August, 4.9 million overnight stays were recorded in the hotels along the Costa, up 2.2 per cent. Whilst prices remain more or less at the level they were in 2008, utility bills have shot up. A typical hotel will have

seen a 70 per cent increase in its energy bills in the last four years. All too often hotels lose money during the winter months and spend the summer desperately trying to make a profit. Many in the sector will be hoping to prolong the season as much as possible in order to maximise profits. September bookings have been positive and hoteliers have high hopes for October, too.

VELEZ MALAGA is gearing up to celebrate the traditional Real Feria de San Miguel this week and this year’s offering should prove to be an exciting and captivating event. The Feria in many people’s minds is split into two distinct experiences: daytime and night-time, with the locals of Velez Malaga often opting to partake in festivities during the day, leaving the night for visitors from the surrounding towns and villages. Aware of criticism that the evening Feria sometimes lacks the atmosphere of the day, the organisers have decided to move

the livestock fair back into the centre, as well as expanding this year’s programme of music and concerts in order to keep the atmosphere going throughout the event. The main attraction for many will be the popular rock group from Malaga, Efecto Mariposa (The Butterfly Effect), who will be closing the evening events on Sunday. Other musical offerings will include Gemeliers, and Abraham Mateo. The Real Feria de San Miguel started yesterday (Wednesday) and ends on Monday.

Mother to sue over death AN American mother is holding a Dutch company responsible for her five-month-old daughter’s death at Alicante airport. The woman, Nathania Terry, was standing at the airport’s luggage carousel for large items, waiting for her pushchair as she held the baby named Vashtin in a car-seat. She placed it on the stationary conveyor belt but as she did so, the

carousel began to move and the carrier overbalanced. “It happened within seconds,” airport staff explained afterwards, describing how the baby was crushed in the gap between the two moving belts. Terry tried to save the child but did not have sufficient time to respond, they said. The mother is now suing Vanderlande which supplies

luggage-handling systems to airports, reported US newspaper Court House News. She seeks punitive damages for wrongful death, negligence, design defects and failure to warn. “The conveyor belt functioned correctly and the accident was the responsibility of the person in charge,” the Spanish Government said later after an official enquiry.

The Volvo Ocean Race, formerly the Whitbread Round the World Race, is held every three years, and is hugely anticipated in the yachting world. €1.5 million for the Axarquia MALAGA Provincial Council is to invest €1.5 million in the Axarquia. The Municipality Commonwealth of Costa del Sol Axarquia and the provincial council are to invest the money to improve beaches, public areas and historic town centres in all 31 municipalities. The project has been designed to promote development and business activity in the region by boosting tourism, said President of the Provincial Council of Malaga, Elias Bendodo. The allocation of funds is to be stipulated in two regional agreements with €750,000 each, one for coastal municipalities and the other for municipalities located inside the Axarquia. Some of the towns included in the project include Rincon de la Victoria, Velez Malaga, Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja.

Winter fuel allowance debate

HE winter fuel allowance debate rages on amongst expatriate pensioners. The news that last year the number of expats claiming the British allowance whilst living in Spain rose by 44 per cent will further inflame the debate. Those who claim it see nothing wrong with doing so. After all they have paid in all their lives for their pension, so why should they miss out because they live abroad? But this is a payment to help people keep warm in freezing weather more common in the UK, not those living in sunny Spain, goes the argument against. Leaving aside the fact that many parts of Spain - and not all that far inland either - do get very chilly indeed in the winter, both arguments miss the point. It is that NO winter fuel payment

should be made at all, whether here in Spain or back in the UK. Instead the British government should pay people a decent pension. That would mean no one would need an extra payment. To argue that one of the wealthiest countries in the world cannot afford it is disingenuous. There are plenty of other things the government could cut back on. Pensioners deserve better.

New day centre VELEZ MALAGA is to build a day centre for Alzheimer’s patients. Scheduled to be inaugurated next year, the centre is to be located next to Hospital de San Juan de Dios and built with an investment of €600,000. Concerns raised over the future of raisin production

EL BORGE, a community which can hold claim to being Axarquia’s capital of Muscat raisin production, is demanding a rise in agricultural subsidies for help in producing the dried fruit. More than 3,000 families in the area dedicate their lives to the tough and demanding work of collecting the grapes and drying them in the hot sun, all the while facing a reduction in agricultural subsidies of more than a third. Thanks to changes in the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the 100-year-old tradition of Muscat grape production is becoming less and less profitable. In an effort to combat these changes and promote raisin production, last Sunday saw the 19th edition of ‘Raisin Day’ (El Dia de la Pasa) in the small community of El Borge. Despite a bad harvest, in which producers saw a fall of between 50 and 75 per cent of their crop in respect to 2013 (barely 200 tonnes

55 years of Nerja cave NERJA will commemorate the 55th anniversary of the discovery of Cueva de Nerja with a concert and by paying tribute to its first photographer. On October 18, the Symphony Orchestra of Malaga and Andalucian guitarist Javier Garcia Moreno will take the stage in Cueva de Nerja for a concert organised with the co-operation of Malaga Provincial Council to mark the 55th anniversary of the discovery of the cave.

The performance will be recorded and later released on CD. Tickets are €10 and will be available from the official website of the cave. A few days later, on October 30, Nerja will pay tribute to the late Jose Padial, the first photographer to ever capture the cave on camera, with the screening of a documentary called ‘La Cueva de Nerja: Año Cero’ by Padial’s nephew.

Driving examiner attacked THE National Federation of Driving Schools has condemned an attack on a driving test examiner in Motril. It appears the man taking the test did not like it when he was informed he had not passed and punched the examiner in the chest. The National Federation of Driving Schools rejected what it described as an inexcusable act and the provincial chairman Jose Blas was quoted as saying the psychological damage suffered by the examiner was more significant than the actual blow itself.

Alleged beach thief detained A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been detained by police as the alleged perpetrator of several thefts on Nerja beaches during the summer. Following an increase in reported thefts of items belonging to beachgoers in Nerja, including handbags and backpacks, the Guardia Civil decided to launch an investigation and came to the conclusion that the thief probably used rocks and crannies to hide and pick his most suitable victims. He is believed to have stolen the items while the beachgoers were off swimming. The Guardia Civil detained him and recovered a large number of bags, documents and electronic devices. The alleged thief has been remanded in custody.

The agricultural Experiment Station La Mayora in Algarrobo and local farmers have been experimenting with crops that can be adapted to soil and weather conditions in the region to increase agricultural output and profitability, and put regional products in new markets. Experiments conducted by La Mayora mainly focus on lychee, longan, pitaya, carambola, moringa and sugarleaf. This is not the first time that La Mayora has tried to introduce new crops into the Axarquia. In fact, almost 50 years ago the facility took a leading role in the introduction of strawberries in Andalucia and

Winter fuel allowance payouts to expats increase in Spain THE number of expatriates claiming the winter fuel allowance in Spain has risen by nearly half in the last two years. Last winter, 50,000 received the winter fuel allowance, an estimated increase of 44

per cent since 2011/2012. Britons living in Spain have received a total of £60 million (€76m) since 2005 in winter fuel allowance. The number of beneficiaries has risen in Spain, Greece and Cyprus to an all-time high, with a total of 139,000 people being paid the benefit for the last winter. Seventy- five thousand claimed in the

winter of 2011/2012. The biggest concentrations of expatriates in receipt of this benefit are in Spain and France, with payouts up to £300 (€381) being given to each household. The total paid to expatriates in 2013-14 was £22 million (€28m), a record amount. In order to qualify for the benefit, pensioners abroad need

to have been born on or before July 5, 1952. But there is controversy over whether those living abroad in warmer climates should be entitled to the allowance. A spending review in 2015 will examine the possibility of only paying the allowance to expatriates who live in colder countries than the UK. Editor says... Page 4

Mother to sue over death

THE mother of the baby girl who died at Alicante airport is taking legal action. The woman, from America, was at the luggage carousel waiting when she placed her five-month-old daughter in a car seat and put it on a stationary conveyor belt. The weight of the seat caused the carousel to move and the infant fell and was caught between a gap in the two moving belts and she died from her injuries. Airport staff said the accident, which happened in September 2013, occurred within a matter of seconds and the mother rushed to save the child. According to a US newspaper, the family are suing the Dutch company which supplies luggage-handling systems to airports seeking damages for wrongful death, negligence, design defects and a failure to warn. Beggars that make town look rundown I HAVE been in Torre del Mar since February. In that time there have always been 12 or more beggars about, mostly along a small section of the N340 main road, while others are outside supermarkets. Most are long-stay, some come and go. Of the long-stay, the majority seem to be fairly young and Spanish and they are out six or seven days a week, so obviously they are not looking for work. Many are quite well-dressed and some have the inevitable dog with them. One with a foldup chair that he brings with him settles down with a book and waits for the money to roll in. A man in a wheelchair has appeared recently but at times he moves his legs about (cramp, I suppose) and no cripple can move like that. I have seen a few deserving cases looking as though they have slept rough, but they are there for a few days and go. The rest just seem to be deadbeats who don’t want to work. Can’t the police do something about them, as these beggars make the town look rundown? Michael Hill, Torre del Mar (Malaga)

Highway code RECENTLY I read in the Euro Weekly News that the Manual de normas de Trafico 3 was available at all bookshops for €12. Bookshops in Garrucha knew nothing of it and sent me to driving schools, who said such a book at such a price does not exist! There are driving manuals for learners but apparently no single publication which comprehensively covers all the rules of the road. Rights or wrongs I DO not agree with the comments of Antonie Holtzhausen. I think the actions of the parents were foolhardy, ill thought-out and posed a risk to Ashya.

The consultant at Southampton Hospital had offered the family a second opinion and access to treatment abroad. The boy’s scans and notes could have been emailed to Prague and an opinion sought as to the suitability of proton treatment while Ashya was cared for in hospital. Instead his father chose to take the family on a long trek to sell his Spanish apartment to raise funds. In the current climate this could have taken months. What could have happened to Ashya and the other children in the meantime? This sale could have been arranged from the UK, or the father could have gone to Spain on his own. It all went horribly wrong and the UK police had no choice but to take the action they did. No doubt there will be interviews on morning TV, articles and books etc. I hope the proceeds are given to children’s cancer charities. The most important thing is

that Ashya gets the correct treatment, but in my opinion there were better ways of achieving this. Marion Woods, Mazarron (Murcia)

Lock it away I WAS interested in a Euro Weekly News article describing the intention to introduce parking charges and fines to Torre Del Mar and Velez-Malaga. It seems to me that these measures will restrict tourism rather than encourage it, but will presumably provide a ready revenue stream. Will tourists favour destinations without parking charges and will this affect cafes and shop keepers, for instance? Far better in my view for councils to make money by providing an improved beach experience. I had the notion of ‘beach lockers’ and looking on Google found that Bournemouth has been offering beach lockers in the UK since 2006. These provide space for visitors to store valuables whilst they enjoy the beach for £3 per day. A small price to pay to keep your smart phone and wallet safe! I calculate that these would provide roughly €1 million per year, if introduced in the Costal del Sol alone. Neil Smith, Cutar (Malaga)

Health proposal WITH large urbanisations near Punta Prima and the Torrevieja hospital and an aging population, a second health centre will soon be needed. At the back of the hospital there is another car park that is underused. Would this not be the ideal place for another centre as the Health department must already own the land? Savings could be made using modern materials such as plastic-faced polystyrene panels in place of wood, which would be more hygienic. The downside would be the salaries of doctors, nurses and staff. Spain well on the way to recovery ALTHOUGH Spain was severely affected by the 2008 crash and its real-estate market took a serious blow, the country appears to be getting back on its feet. According to data from the Royal Institute of Chartered Accountants (RICS), foreign property investors are showing renewed interest in the country that has long been the preferred retirement and holiday destination of hundreds of thousands of Germans, Britons and French and Dutch nationals. There is now evidence of an improvement in the real-estate markets of an ever-growing number of European countries, said RICS’s chief economist Simon Rubinsohn. “Our latest test results also show evidence of

Orange bid for Jazztel ORANGE has offered €3.4 billion for Spain’s Jazztel. The CNMV, Spain’s stock market regulator, suspended trading in Jazztel shares when their value shot up by 12 per cent, hours before the deal was announced. It intends to investigate possible insider trading, the supervisor announced later. Acquiring Jazztel would give Orange approximately 1.5 million broadband subscribers and follows Vodafone’s takeover of Spanish cable provider ONO last July. “With the economy recovering, this is the moment to reinforce our presence,” said Orange CEO Stephane Richard. At the receiving end of

the €13 per share offer are Jazztel’s shareholders and its chairman, Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals, a Spanish-Cuban who is now a US citizen and owns a 14.48 per cent stake in the company. Pujals founded Telepizza in 1988 based on just one Madrid outlet and capital equivalent to €372,000. By 1999 he was able to sell out for €360.6 million and buy into Jazztel, then on the brink of insolvency, using €60 million of the Telepizza sale. If the current transaction goes through, he will now receive 14.48 per cent of the €3.4 billion that Orange is offering.

IT’S no news flash that the Spanish spoil their kids and a new survey has just confirmed it. According to research, which looked at the average amount of pocket money children receive across Europe, it’s been revealed that kids in Spain are not left short. Spanish kids are the third-best paid youngsters in the EU (after Italy and France), with those aged between five to 15 receiving €5 to €10 a week. Almost 50 per cent of parents in this country said that they don’t give their kids any pocket

money at all and that if their child needs something, then they simply discuss the purchase and buy it for their child if necessary. Therefore, almost half of young Spanish children don’t handle money. The other 50 per cent of parents, however, who do give money to their children, said that their main reason for doing so is to ensure their kids learn to respect and value money. Almost 85 per cent of those parents studied also admitted that since giving pocket money to their children

If you are a UK pensioner, receiving the state old age pension, you have the right to NHS medical treatment in the UK. If you become an official resident of Spain, with the Certificate of Residency, you have the right to transfer your medical treatment to the Spanish healthcare system. You apply to the Spanish Social Security office in your autonomous region, such as Valencia or Andalucia. They will then issue you the Spanish Social Security card which entitles you to treatment and they will assign you to a local family doctor. Each of the regions administrates health care in its territory but your card is valid in all of Spain.

The process is not automatic. You must apply for it.

money are also noted to save a significant portion of their allowance, which

is great practice and habit building for the future. In general, if parents can afford it, giving kids regular pocket money is a great way to develop their independence and goal setting. For example if a child wants a new video game console, then they can learn how to save to buy it. A child will see that it takes time to build up savings and will hopefully develop a sense of responsibility regarding the concept of money. It’s a good idea to provide two jars for children when you give them pocket money: one for spending and one for saving. This way they can choose how they distribute their pocket money between the jars. This also gives you a chance to teach your kids about money and its use.

IT is inevitable that from time to time there will be disagreements with customers. The customer is not always right. Some do abuse the hypothesis that the customer is king. However, most disagreements between service provider and customer are due to avoidable misunderstandings. Customer conflict can be reduced to a minimum simply by explaining precisely what he is going to get for his financial outlay. Honesty is the best policy. Never give a delivery time you cannot meet. The important thing is to explain, understand, get it in writing. Often the fault lies with the customer. In an effort to keep prices down, the client withholds information when asking for a price. The client dislikes the bill being added to but is happy to increase his expectations of what is to be done. An example of this was when my wife, who translates menus to Russian, was

asked the fee for an a la carte menu translation. Such menus can be one page or multiple pages. When asked for an attached copy the client failed to respond. One wonders how the eatery’s owner would react had a client sat down, dismissed the offer of a menu and asked: “How much for a three-course meal?” Never price over the phone or internet. If the client is vague there is a catch. Far better to see beforehand precisely what needs doing and the time to complete. Listen carefully to your customers wants. Understand and repeat them, reassure and take notes. Having put in writing a synopsis of the work to be carried out, and if possible a price breakdown, sign and leave it. When doing so explain the costs or stages at which second thoughts or exit can be met. A no nonsense business approach from the outset will weed out time wasters. It will compensate by reassuring genuine enquirers that your business is professional in its approach. It sounds tedious, but far more tedious is a disgruntled client who, apart from later challenging you, could likely destroy your business with gossip.

Still together, thankfully, sounds like a pleasant song Muslim fraternity who think themselves above British authority and live under Sharia law, an utter disgrace. One of the biggest craw-stickers to me is the four (plus one reserve) wives they are allowed under this illegal UK organisation. Apparently there are some 20,000 of these ‘arrangements’ now existing. To be honest, I have always found one wife more than enough and frankly, to my mind, they can all get on with it. But it doesn’t end there, does it? Because British law only allows a single spouse, they can only claim family allowance for one. So what do they do? Simple, they impregnate the other three and claim for them on the social as unmarried mothers. It’s fraud, pure and simple. Multiply that little touch by 20,000 and it comes to some
