Montgo on fire THE fire that threatened Javea and Denia took two days to stabilise and was totally extinguished after four. Flames that took hold in Cabo de San Antonio in Javea at 4pm spread towards Denia almost immediately. Later that night, when almost under control the fire doubled back to Javea when the wind changed direction.

Approximately 444 hectares of the Montgo National Park were destroyed and 1,400 people temporarily evacuated from their homes, hotels and beaches in Denia. When the fire veered once more towards Javea it ripped along gullies and resembled molted lava, witnesses said. Owing to the inaccessible and steep terrain the fire

had to be controlled from the air. At its fiercest 12 aircraft - four helicopters, six air tractors and two Seal fire fighting planes - worked in relays to attack the flames with water and retardant. The Montgo disaster could have been deliberate as the original fire appeared to start at three separate points, claims yet to be confirmed.

Runway traffic jams complaint by pilots PILOTS lose up to eight minutes each time they take off from Alicante airport. There is a bottleneck as they taxi to the runways because designers did not allow sufficient room for two aircraft when the €700

million airport was on the drawing board. As a result pilots must wait until access is clear, airlines claim, and this causes delays and hold ups. “The extra time that an aircraft is on the ground means losing money,”

airport insiders said. Pilots get round the problem by asking permission to take off before they are totally prepared. “They know they will have everything ready in the time they wait before getting the “okay” from the control tower,”

the same sources revealed. Spain’s state-owned airports operator Aena officially denied there were hold ups but admitted they existed in private meetings with the airlines last month. A solution will be found when its budget allows.

Alfaz retains its ties with tradition ALFAZ DEL PI recently celebrated one of its oldest traditions, the couplets honouring Our Lady of Sorrows. Reciting and singing the ‘Copletes’ are the oldest of Alfaz’s celebrations and are thought to predate the fiestas of many neighbouring towns. Roughly coinciding with the religious feast day, the fiesta heralds the transition from summer to autumn that was so important when Alfaz was still an agricultural community. Now regarded as difficult to perform, singers do not need good voices and, as always, the ‘Copletes’ were recited and sung outside the church under the pine that gives the town its name. The custom lapsed after the Civil War but was revived in 1986 thanks to older residents who remembered them from their youth. As custom required, once the ‘Copletes’ were finished, fiestas’ queens Andrea Alonso and Sara Ditsch, who will later preside the town’s November celebrations, began the dancing. And as it has for generations, the evening concluded with sweet mistela wine and cakes.

Advice for Mexican Indians MEXICAN Indians opposed to a wind-farm in Tehuantapec have approached an Alcoy association for advice. Spanish multinationals Endesa, Gas Natural and Gamesa plan to install 28 wind farms with 6,000 turbines across internationally protected communal land, they claimed. The Spanish companies also plan to locate 254 of their wind

turbines in a lagoon and wetlands the community regard as sacred. Alcoy’s Coordinadora d’Estudis Eolics is currently organising opposition to Generalitat plans for wind farms in the Almudaina and Alfaro sierras and are petitioning to halt the project. It may not have the cachet of Cannes, but the San Sebastian International Film Festival is acknowledged to be one of the most important in the annual rota of movie festivals. It has come a long way since its inception in 1953 when it was for Spanish language films only. By 1955 its remit was extended to include ‘foreign’ movies, specialising in colour, and since then it has never looked back. This well has guaranteed Calpe’s domestic supply since 1988 and the CHJ water board finally approved the concession decades after Calpe, Murla and Vall de Laguart first sought permission. Shared administration of Pozo Lucifer between Calpe and the two inland

towns ensures a reliable supply for all three municipalities, said Calpe’s Mayor Cesar Sanchez. The consortium will be presided over by the

Mayor of Vall de Laguart, Francisco Gilabert. Each municipality will be charged on a monthly basis according to the amount of water

Gas is thrown in fight AN Alcoy man threw a butane gas canister from a third floor apartment during an argument with his wife. The cylinder fell onto a neighbour’s car parked in the street below without exploding but shattered the windscreen. Soon afterwards the man, believed to be in his 40s and separated from his wife according to neighbours, was overcome by nerves and taken by ambulance to the local Virgen de los Lirios hospital. Both the National Police and the Local Police are investigating the incident and the background to the quarrel, sources said.

Improvements for Villajoyosa hospital CHEMOTHERAPY outpatients at Villajoyosa hospital will have double the space by the end of the year. Until now patients have been squeezed into a 40square metre area with 15 chairs for those receiving treatment. The regional government has now announced that a new location has been found for Oncology, Rheumatology and Internal Medicine outpatients.

More spacious premises have been allocated near the Rehabilitation area on the ground floor of the External Consultations building.

Work, which began this week, is expected to take approximately two months and the €83,000 cost will be met by the regional government, said Marina

Fire causes closure of restaurants A FIRE in Altea’s Old the Town forced closure of around 30 restaurants and bars. The fire in the electrical transformer next to the Tourist Information Office and the Schlotter Foundation resulted in power failure to a number of streets and in an area where around 800 people live. She was recently featured in British national newspaper The Sun on Sunday for her work which came about as quite a surprise. She was listening to the radio when she recognised the voice of a radio presenter from her hometown of Hartlepool. Sending him a message, he dropped by the store and they chatted. The next thing she knew was he was passing her details on to The Sun on Sunday who wanted to interview her: “I was well chuffed!”

Lynn moved to Almeria 14 years ago before moving to the Costa Blanca eight years ago. She started helping out in the shop before buying the business from the owner. By then Lynn had fallen for the industry and the satisfaction she gets out of it.

As well as the fashion side, there is the more difficult, emotional side with Lynn seeing a lot of cancer patients: “I always have tissues at hand, a lot of the time when women come in to try on wigs it is the first time the realisation has hit them that they have cancer and a lot of them ask us to shave their head before their hair falls out.” But equally, the comfort and relief seen when they try on a wig, giving them back their confidence is paramount for Lynn. She visits hospitals and is currently working with

N recent weeks the world has watched, powerless, as three brave men have been butchered by monsters. The murders of James Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Cawthorne Haines have shaken us in a way that the deaths of thousands in Iraq and Syria did not, but maybe now, finally, our governments will do something about it. Over the last year, ISIL has brought nothing but instability, terror and unimaginable bloodshed to Syria and Iraq. Countless have been killed at the hands of these animals under the guise of an ideology that has no place in any religion. If a terrorist organisation can indiscriminately kill journalists and aid workers, then nobody is safe. Any one of us could be next. James Foley and Steven Sotloff were journalists, just trying to do their job and report the truth to the

world. They were killed because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. David Cawthorne Haines was an aid worker providing food, medicine and comfort to those who needed it. There is no reason on earth as to why he should have been killed except for pure sadism. Alan Henning, ISILâ€™s next victim, is a taxi driver who decided to drive aid to Syria. His life, and the lives of his family, has been turned upside down because he refused to sit idly by whilst others suffered. We cannot stay silent while he suffers. Do nothing and we are as guilty as those who are committing these barbaric crimes. How many more must die before our governments act? Why have they still not done anything? This uncontrolled violence must be brought to an end, and those with the power to do so must act now.

British diver dies off Javea beach STEPHEN HARRISON, better-known locally as ‘Scuba Steve,’ died after a dive at Portitxol beach in Javea. A keen diver with more than 10 years’ experience, 59-year-old Stephen was a dive master and had been an instructor for the last five years. At the end of last month he went out to dive with two young people in their 20s but during the immersion the young man

found himself in difficulties. He made a rapid ascent to the surface, followed by his female companion. Stephen reassured and calmed both divers, guiding them to the surface and directing them to the shore. While they were making for the beach Stephen signalled to the rescue boat but when it reached his location they instead found his lifeless body. All their attempts at administering CPR on reaching the beach

were unsuccessful and it is believed that Stephen suffered a heart attack while in the water. An account of Stephen’s sad death that appeared earlier this month in the newspaper differs considerably from the above. It was based on a Spanish source and the Euro Weekly News would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Mrs Harrison for any distress this may have caused her.

N a recent email, David Cummings made some interesting observations. “I applaud your sentiments in trying to raise awareness of the bigotry, lack of equality and treatment shown towards women. “However, I do not accept your view that these opinions belong in the Stone Age, and believe you’re basing this assumption on Hollywood movie images of a caveman with a big club dragging a woman along on her backside by her long hair. “Your campaign would have more credibility if you were to publish the real cause of women’s problems, which are due purely and simply to religion and the Bible. Stone Age people could neither read nor write, but the Bible is littered with disrespectful attitudes towards women. Take a few moments to check out Genesis 3:16, 1 Timothy 2:8-15, 1 Corinthians 14:34-36, Peter 3:1-7, Ephesians 5:22-24, Colossians 3:18-19, and these are only a small selection, which were not written in the Stone Age. “An interesting quote by Elizabeth Cady Stanton: ‘The Bible and the Church have been the greatest stumbling blocks in the way of woman’s emancipation.’ “I would respectfully suggest to your women readers to search the internet and discover why their god hates them, then they’ll realise why some men have adopted such atrocious attitudes towards them. “The EWN should stop degrading women by publishing pornographic adverts offering their services. It was not so many years ago that the EWN criticised other publications for printing these ads, but that may have been before the change of ownership. “You will notice I have also copied this letter to other publications in English, in the hope that they’ll support your campaign and highlight the true reason for women’s inferior status. “Do any of you really care enough about women to publish the true cause of their problems?

These girls should never be viewed as prostitutes the idea is ridiculous.” Initially Nicholas’s email may seem negative, but, reading on, it is a positive response to the campaign. Groups have been formed to help those women when they are strong enough or able to speak out and the police have introduced specific policing units to help female victims of domestic and sexual crimes. “Equal opportunities and fairness within the workplace have improved substantially in the UK, yet when I read your article of the comments made by the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and a mayor in Northern Spain, I was saddened that some countries are still behind the times on improving life for women and still have an old mindset; old laws in need of review. “I choose to live in Spain and hope that eventually the day will come when we as women are treated fairly and that one day we will have the same level of equality not only in Spain but everywhere in the world.” Lesley, Costa del Sol

THERE has been a remarkable shift in the demography of Mediterranean Spain over a very short time. By the time I settled here in 2008 the region between Gibraltar and Valencia was under British occupation. Most businesses set out their stalls accordingly. A Spanish restaurateur in Torrevieja explained to me that he could survive if unable to speak Spanish, but the ability to communicate in English kept him solvent. As I strolled esplanades the second language heard spoken was English. This is no longer the case. According to national statistics 90,000 (22.8 per cent) Brits abandoned Spain in 2013. How many others have since died is anyone’s guess. Spain has lost much of its appeal as a viable place to work or set up a business. The Russian presence is widespread, but their being treated as the pariahs of Europe has reduced Russian tourism and investment in Europe by 10 to 40 per cent

depending on country. Britain has lost its dominance. The Costa communities are now a blend of many nationalities. Businesses now have little choice but to modify their approach to cater for a broader church. Most enterprising restaurants now offer their menu in Russian. At the onset of what I had hoped would be a wonderful evening’s entertainment the night’s performer appeared. Having seen Simon a year or so earlier I groaned. His well received repertoire, then at an Irish theme venue, was strictly to British taste; much of it 1960s pop. This was going to go down like a lead balloon. At this venue, Brits were very much the minority. Our fellow diners comprised a blend of Spanish, Russian, German and other nationalities. The audience had changed; had Simon? His performance that night was internationally popular trad-jazz, parody, Latin American, light classical, waltz, oompah and Western European favourites. Well done, that man. Just add the Kalinka song; learning the balalaika can be done another time. Many of the early departed 90,000 Brits simply refused to change with the times. I know an entertainer likely to grow richer by moving with the times.

Thanks to all good Samaritans ON Tuesday, September 2, I was in Garrucha waiting for the bus to take me to Mojacar. I suffered a dizzy spell and was helped by a number of people. The owner of a café brought me into his premises and made me comfortable. An off-duty nurse assisted me and insisted I needed to go to the hospital. I did not want to make a fuss but she said it was necessary, so she called for an ambulance. An English couple cooled me down with a fan, which was most welcome. A lady called Rosalie (I did not get her surname) stayed with me throughout my ordeal. She accompanied me in the ambulance and stayed with me at the hospital, translating my symptoms to the doctor. She also insisted on accompanying me to my home to make sure I was safe. Rosalie, you were an angel. I am led to believe bystanders at the bus stop also assisted. Get learning REGARDING the Language hurdle letter, what would anyone expect at any call centre in Britain? Would we expect them to speak Spanish? Of course not, so why do people here expect staff to speak English? If people are not prepared to learn the language, then they should leave. I would say the same to anyone who wishes to settle in Britain: learn English or get out. In Britain we speak English and in Spain they speak Spanish: where is the difficulty? People who make no effort to learn are ignorant, arrogant and an embarrassment. It really is not difficult to learn, we have done it with absolutely no previous language experience, so just try. Prickly subject THIS year the Mojacar area has seen a plague of tiny greenishwhite flies. They attack the prickly pears which are part of our traditional landscape and act as natural fire breaks. They have spread into our gardens and are killing other plants and may even threaten vegetables if left unchecked. They are so small they can penetrate mosquito screens and infest the inside of our houses after dark. Why has there been no action by the authorities? Herbal remedies THANK you for this week’s article by Dick Handscombe (Herbs can improve your diet and health). It was one of the most interesting and informative newspaper articles I’ve read in years. Here in Almond Court we’re lucky enough to have much of what he recommends: a peaceful garden area with a pristine swimming pool, an immaculate lawn and stately trees for admiration. We have a shady arbour amid shrubs and aromatic herbs for contemplation and a raised terrace with tables and parasols for conversation. Update On The Spanish Tax Reform The income tax rates and thresholds will change next year, under reforms aimed primarily at lower income individuals and families. There are some other changes which may affect you. The Spanish government released its draft tax legislation in June. In August it approved three laws which include some additional changes to the original proposals. The reforms will apply from 1st January 2015. However the laws still need to approved by parliament and so may change. Income tax The current seven income tax bands will be reduced to five, and tax rates reduced over 2015 and 2016. The minimum tax rate is reduced from 24.75% to 20% in 2015 and 19% in 2016. The top rate will fall from 52% to 47% next year and 45% the following one. However the new top rate will apply from income over €60,000, as opposed to €300,000 as currently.

In particular, taxpayers with annual income of less than €24,000 will see their income tax reduced by 23.5%, while those earning under €30,000 will pay 19.34% less tax. Contrary to the original proposals, the 60% deduction against net rental income for residents is not reduced to 50%.

Savings income Currently, income up to €6,000 is taxed at 21%; income between €6,000 and €24,000 at 25%, and the excess at 27%. Under the proposals, the rate for the first tax band will reduce to 20% in 2015 and 19% in 2016; income between €6,000 and €50,000 will be taxed at 22% and 21% respectively, and anything over €50,000 at 24% then 23%. Capital gains tax Under current rules, gains arising on assets held for less than a year are subject to the normal scale rates of up to 52%. From 2015, all capital gains, regardless of the holding period, will be taxed at the savings rates as above. One of the most significant additional changes is the exemption for individuals over the age of 65 on all capital gains, provided the proceeds are used to buy a pension annuity. There

appears to be no legislation to restrict main home relief for over 65s in any way, including any requirement to buy an annuity. Indexation will no longer apply on the sale of a property from 1st January 2015. Succession tax Succession tax affects almost everyone living in Spain, and many do not realise how much it can impact their heirs, depending on their circumstances. Unfortunately there are no proposed changes in the tax reform and draft legislation, to ease the burden for families. In September the European Court of Justice ruled that Spain has failed to fulfil its obligations regarding succession and gift tax. Basically, by allowing differences in the tax treatment between resident and non-resident beneficiaries, they have breached the EU treaties. The main aim of the tax reforms is to help those on lower

incomes, so those with savings and investments need specialist tax planning to protect their capital, income and assets from tax. The reforms do not address wealth tax, and we need to wait and see what, if anything, the government does with regards succession tax following the court ruling. KNOW we are a nation of animal lovers, but the theatrical goldfish saga that came to light last week really did tip the scales. (Scales geddit? Suit yerself). Apparently in a recent modern day interpretation of Richard III, a member of the audience was ‘horrified’ by what she considered cruelty to a goldfish! The lady in question, who was a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), was sitting in the front row. In a letter to the producers, she complained that when the Duke of Clarence’s life

was dispatched in a tank of water, the lives of the goldfish swimming around in it were being placed in peril of injury or death! You really couldn’t make it up. In the letter the group insisted that goldfish were intelligent sensitive animals that possess ‘long term memories and complex social structures.’ Despite the fact that the fish were supplied by a reputable company and cared for under RSPCA conditions, such was the onslaught from these people, that for a bit of peace, the company has actually withdrawn them from the show (I bet their agent wasn’t too happy with that!). I mean give us a break. ‘Long term memories?’ My daughter has had a goldfish in a bowl for six years after

winning it at a fairground. I understood that the reason it kept good and healthy and didn’t go doolally was because it kept forgetting it had already just done a circuit. The mind boggles. On a more serious note, the tragic kennel fire which took the lives of 53 dogs last week was indeed a heartrending event. However, the more than £1 million (€1.26 million) that poured in within days was I felt a little excessive. I wonder how much was donated by the public to help the children and refugees starving and dining in the hell holes of the Middle East in the same short period? Nowhere near that figure I’ll be bound. Makes ya think dunnit? I haven’t broached on the

‘Scottish day of reckoning’ yet, mainly because I didn’t want to upset my Scottish friends. But as this piece comes out on the day of the referendum, I just thought I’d throw in my three penn’orth. ITH the summer almost over, and you’re maybe looking at all those snaps or selfies taken on the beach or in the pool, it’s always instructive to look back at past holidays and ask yourself what made certain ones stand out. Perhaps for completely the wrong reasons they were travel nightmares? One of my first was many years ago as a student on a Greyhound bus travelling around the USA. A youth had a Sony Discman playing a compilation CD so loud I’m amazed his eardrums didn’t burst. Five hours in, one passenger cracked, leaned over

TRAVEL NIGHTMARES: What was your worst experience? and casually cut through the headphone wire. We all gave him a silent round of applause.

Another nightmare, shortly after my return, was standing nose-to-armpit for two hours in

the dark on a static London tube on a suffocatingly hot summer’s afternoon. That bit was just about bearable, but an American lady piping up that we should all introduce ourselves was tortuous and, in seconds, had all the passengers on the verge of throwing up. And what about flights? Let me count the ways. I recall a 13-hour flight seated next to an engineer called Arnold with an obsessional passion for talking about his work. It’s the closest I’ve ever come to violence against another person by means of a moist towelette and a bag of nuts. And Ryanair? Where to begin and how much time do you have? Cramped into seats smaller than those on the average bus, every available space covered with adverts for their booze and raffle tickets, continual announcements which should have been safety announcements, but were adverts for their booze and

raffle tickets. Even if you tried to get some sleep, you were woken up by a hostess trying to sell you… more booze and raffle tickets. Now I admit I don’t like flying. Ever since a bad experience as a child in a turbo prop to storm-bound Malta (the nosewheel bursting halfway down the runway upon finally landing ... that was fun ... sparks flying and smoke everywhere) when the pilot announced: “We’ll soon be landing at Luqa airport. Or quite near it.” Actually, “quite near” turned out to be 200 miles away in another continent Tunis, North Africa. What’s your worst travel experience, I wonder? OVER the past few months I have been interviewing Lamia from House Sit Match on my radio show at Talk Radio Europe (every Saturday at 10.am). There is no doubt the system works. Unfortunately I am personally unable to use their services because I have two Rottweilers and according to the law of Spain my dogs are potentially dangerous and have to be registered with the authorities. As the owner I am compelled to have a licence and was required to take a medical examination to see if I

My licence clearly states they have to be muzzled in all public places and that I am the only person that is able to walk my dogs and only one dog at a time. Each dog has a public insurance for half a million euros.

In the next few weeks I am taking a break and whilst I am away Boy Boy and Sheba will be having their holiday at Stefanie’s Kennels Estepona (http://stefanieskennels. com/) where they will be safe, well cared for and if there is a health problem they have immediate assistance from a vet on the premises. I am also within the law. For those that do not come under ‘the Dangerous Dog Act’ there is an excellent choice of kennels and pet sitters. In a few days’ time I will send my dogs for a full medical examination to ensure their teeth and gums are in order and in general they are in good health. My dogs will also be vaccinated for Kennel Cough which seems to be going around again. I do strongly recommend all dogs and cats are vaccinated each year against kennel cough. At the present time we care for some 17 dogs and a seven-week-old kitten. All of these animals receive full health checks with qualified Vets. ILL LITTLE is an all round talented guy and a genuinely nice one at that. Originally from Glasgow, his love of martial arts has propelled him to the film sets of many productions and even now, having recently moved to Spain and taken over Corazon del Puerto Restaurant and Bar in Marina Salinas in Torrevieja, he is still producing and directing films. As a youngster Bill became passionate about the Kobe Osaka style and martial arts and went on to open his own clubs, become three times middleweight champion,

Bill Little is an all round talented guy and a genuinely nice one too. European champion twice and Scottish champion twice. But a call from his agent was to change his life: “I was asked to go to Norwich to arrange a fight scene for a TV series.” The stunt co-ordinator on set asked him about his background and he realised he had six of the eight necessary qualifications to get on the stunt register. He got his first work in 1986 as a stunt fighter on Highlander but it was 1995’s epic movie

Braveheart that Bill credits as being one of his best jobs: “I was on the sword team teaching Mel Gibson to fight and he was great. He is a brilliant guy, very down to earth, he would sit and eat lunch with everyone and knew all our names and was a real joker.” With his company Scotfilms, Bill is in the middle of directing his third action film Trained to Kill about two S.A.S. soldiers. Filming is due to resume in the UK in November but he hasn’t ruled out bringing cast over to shoot the remaining scenes in sunny Spain, so watch this space.

Are some people’s brains wired to make them want to eat? PEOPLE who are more obese are more tempted to eat because their brain is wired differently. That’s the view of US researchers who found that obese people had a greater level of dopamine activity in the region of the brain which controls habit. Cooking smells or even food adverts have a stronger pull releasing the dopamine and making it harder to control a healthy weight. Dopamine is the ‘pleasure chemical’ which influences reward, motivation and habit formation. Most drugs cause the release of dopamine, so it is

thought to contribute to why some can be addictive. U.S. researchers found that obese people tended to have greater dopamine activity in the region of the brain that controls habit and less activity in the region of the brain that controls reward. One expert said: “While we cannot say whether obesity is a cause or an effect of these patterns of dopamine activity, eating based on unconscious habits rather than conscious choices could make it harder to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, especially when appetising food cues are practically everywhere.”

Stunning setting for another Wright family wedding LA FINCA DE EDUARDOS was the stunning setting for the elegant and intimate wedding reception of Edward Wright and his bride Nikki. It was a family affair as Edward is the eldest son of La Finca owners’ Eddie and Deborah Wright. Surrounded by friends and family the couple looked loved up and relaxed on their big day, which had been nearly two years in the planning after Nikki proposed to Edward during the leap year. Together for four-and-ahalf years, living in Villamartin, Nikki explained she wanted the day to be “traditional, but relaxed.” With Edward’s sister Leah marrying at La Finca de Eduardos in July, scenes of which were featured on ITV show The Only Way Is Essex, Nikki added it was nice to have someone to share the details with, although rather than planning together, they were more discussing plans to make sure they weren’t having the same things! For Edward, he joked the day was somewhat of a busman’s holiday being at the place he works at every day, but with its special location, beautiful pool scenery and first

MOST weeks I am asked by someone ‘Where can we buy organic/ecological vegetables and fruit? It is not as easy to buy them here as it was in England, France, Germany or Switzerland?’ Unfortunately these people who moved to Spain

FRUIT and VEG: Have a go at growing your own. for a healthy lifestyle are correct. Except for a few regions, particularly in Andalucia, it is not as if Spain has a significant presence in European organic farming. But recognise that an olive is a fruit and the growth of ecological olive oil is a major factor in the growth statistics for Spain. Essentially five factors make it difficult to source ecological fruit and vegetables. • The relatively few farmers who are prepared to produce products without using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and weed killers, genetically modified seeds or growth hormones. The latter especially in the production of meats and eggs. • The fact that it is easier for farmers to export 80 per cent of their produce in bulk rather than sell locally in Spain. • Many local small scale agriculturalists, some of whom grew things by organic methods even if not officially registered, gave up with the difficulty to sell to local shops and supermarket groups once the major national and

international supermarket groups established central buying, and the ease of making a living by getting involved in the construction industry or tourism. • The complexity of regulations involved in registering to be an organic grower and packer and seller of organic products. • Spain not using all available European Community grants for the expansion of organic growing because matching the money available on the 50:50 basis required by Brussels was not seen as a national priority compared with the assistance required by all growers especially for damage to crops by storms, drought and in some cases irrigation water shortages. If you are lucky you will have local organic growers selling at farmers markets or operating weekly box schemes with boxes for pick up or delivery. The latter box system is growing but it has a long way to go to meet demand. For instance when I made a tour of the vast vegetable and fruit growing area around Valencia about three years ago there were just four growers operating

a box scheme. Now there are said to be 15 but between them they probably supply no more than 1,500 families a week. So for most of us the best solution is to grow your own. It is not difficult, as seeds, plantlets, ecological fertilisers, insecticides and fungicides are relatively easy to find compared with 15 years ago when we started and were thought to me mad by local chemical enthusiasts who tried to impress us with one kilo tomatoes and cabbage size lettuces each with large surface areas for chemical contaminations. Most importantly you do not need much space as much of a family’s vegetable needs can be met by growing your favourite veggies in builder’s buckets, raised beds, growing tables or 20 square metre veggie plots. Raise the productivity of your vegetable growing by planting plantlets rather than growing everything from seeds. Grow mini varieties. Thin out for salads leaving remaining plants to mature. Recognise you will be growing in order to harvest daily or twice a day not shopping once or twice a week. More construction licences issued by Madrid than in 2013 THE number of licences for the construction of new housing in Madrid increased in 2014. Between January and August, Madrid Council granted 35 per cent more licences for the construction of new homes than in the same eight-month period in 2013, said Deputy Mayor Enrique Nuñez at a press conference. Figures show that out of the 2,741 granted licences, 54 per cent (1,485) correspond to social housing, while the remaining 46 per cent (1,256) were granted for

private homes. Should this trend continue, not only could 2014 end with approximately 4,300 licences issued for new construction, but the economic impact for Madrid could be very positive as well, thanks to the creation of 10,750 new jobs and a major investment of €258 million, said Nuñez. “These data confirm the trend that started in 2011, when twice as many licences were granted than in 2010 and which totalled 5,278,” he added.

House prices saw 1st rise since 2008 HOUSE prices rose for the first time in six years. Private property prices increased by 0.8 per cent between April and June, compared to the same period in 2013. This is their first positive annual increase since the same period six years ago and puts an end to the long period of annual declines registered since 2008, according to data from the National Statistics Institute. The largest year-on-year price increase was witnessed in Madrid (+2.7 per cent), followed by Valencia (+2.3 per cent), Cantabria (+1.8 per cent), Catalonia (+1.6 per cent) and Murcia (+1.2 per cent). In contrast, the increases were below the national average in Andalucia (+0.7 per cent), the Balearic Islands (+0.4 per cent) and Galicia (+0.1 per cent). The rest of the Spanish regions saw a decrease in housing prices, with the sharpest drop registered in Navarra (-6.1 per cent), Extremadura (-3.5 per cent), Aragon (-2.3 per cent), Asturias (-2 per cent), Castilla y Leon (-1.9 per cent), La Rioja (-1.7 per cent), Castilla-La Mancha (-1.6 per cent), the Basque Country (-1.4 per cent) and the Canary Islands (-0.2 per cent). According to eleconomista.es, the price of resale housing increased by 0.2 per cent between April and June, compared to 2013. This is the highest rate since the fourth quarter in 2007. On the other hand, the prices of new homes registered an increase of 1.9 per cent, which is the first positive rate since October-December 2008.

120,000 Porsche cars delivered to customers worldwide STUTTGART based sports car manufacturer Porsche has handed over 120,000 new vehicles to customers the world over from January to August 2014. That is an increase of 12 per cent in comparison to the same period last year. In August alone the company delivered around 15,000 vehicles a jump of 30 per cent in comparison to the same month last year. Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and

Marketing of Porsche AG, said: “Over the course of this year, we have achieved quite a strong growth worldwide. We posted two-digit growth in Europe as well despite existing uncertainties in several markets. “The new Cayenne will provide further stimulus for growth during the next few months and support our qualitative growth strategy.” So far this year, Porsche has recorded similar growth rates in its three biggest sales

regions. The sports car maker has announced an increase of 16 per cent in Europe: a little less than 39,000 new cars were delivered to customers. Toyota FT-1: a car fit for modern superheroes HOT in the wheeltracks of the high-performance FT-1 ‘Vision GT’ concept Toyota revealed last week, a new ‘real-world’ version has been unveiled. The latest interpretation of the show-

stopping concept coupe features new graphite paintwork in place of the vibrant red featured on the original concept, first seen at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. There is also a new interior treatment, with saddle tan leather elements to give a more sophisticated feel. The FT-1’s interior designers drew their inspiration from modern superhero films, particularly their use of high-tech performance materials for the character’s costumes, as

opposed to the bright tights and garish colours sported by more traditional characters. To achieve the FT-1’s advanced-looking, intricately detailed interior, Toyota’s CALTY design team in California compared leather thicknesses, grain sizes and textures to find the perfect combination. Raised metal mesh provides ventilation for the seats, while also lending a more textural, bold effect that complements the cabin’s metal accents.

An embossed pattern on the instrument panel leather creates a 3-D, technical look. Selene Lee, a CALTY designer, said: “From the start of the FT-1 project, we wanted the driver to have a feeling of flow while at the wheel - to be able to focus on the road and nothing else. Javea Green hosts the 17th Iberian Open Bowls Tournament The Costa Blanca North’s premier bowling event bucked the trend this year attracting higher entries than 2013. Spectators were treated to 11 days of superb bowling often under gruelling conditions as unseasonably hot temperatures reached into the mid-30s. Even though many individuals had to play two matches a day and timings had to be altered on a daily basis to accommodate individuals who were successful in several disciplines, the competition ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of Competition Secretary Allan Travers and his wife Judy, whose administrative skills were so efficient the results of matches were often posted before the teams had put away their woods. On the last day supporters turned out in force to add great atmosphere to tension-charged finals and spectators saw some close games, as in the case of the Ladies Rinks when Maggie
