Families’ desperate search for missing sailors goes on THE search continues for two men who went missing two-and-a-half months ago after setting sail from Torrox. The families of Joaquín Espinosa Ruiz, a 24-yearold from Cadiz, and Antonio Jesus Moyano Pérez, aged 30 from Velez Malaga, have made a public appeal to find the two men. The pair set off from El Peñoncillo in Torrox Costa on June 27. According to the mother of the younger man, he had contacted Moyano in order to buy a boat from him, which was berthed in the dry-dock at Torrox.

Joaquín’s mother, Maribel Ruiz, said: “He had just got his sailing permit, and told me that he wanted to buy a boat. “He had looked at a lot

€30m tramway is rusting away

THE Velez Malaga tram has lain abandoned since 2012. Inaugurated in October 2006 and built at a cost of €30 million, the tram was the transport of choice for 64 per cent of Velez Malaga’s population for almost six years. The service was suspended two years ago. The decision was made by Mayor Francisco Delgado Bonilla after the Junta de Andalucia regional government refused to participate in the co-management of the tram. Now, the pioneering multi-million-euro project has sunk into oblivion and fallen

victim to rust and undergrowth. The lack of maintenance has also attracted vandals and thieves who have stolen the copper cables and stoned the traffic lights and glass billboards. Some drivers have even got used to parking their cars on the tramway tracks and the council has started dismantling the street lights to install them in other areas of town. To find a solution, Velez Malaga Council has asked the Junta de Andalucia to finance the tram, just as it does the Malaga underground.

ENVIRONMENTAL awareness campaigns launched in Almuñecar have been declared a resounding success. More than 2,500 people participated in the campaigns organised by Almuñecar Council on local beaches during the summer. The project included the removal of more than 10,000 cigarette butts and the distribution of

funnels so that beachgoers could dispose of cooking oil in designated containers instead of dumping it in the sea, said Environment and Beaches Councillor Luis Aragon. In June, Almuñecar Council organised several sea-bed cleaning activities and a marine laboratory, in which more than 170 children and youngsters learned about sea

life and the importance of the environment and of recycling waste. Furthermore, the council launched four campaigns at Playa Puerta del Mar, La Herradura, San Cristobal and El Tesorillo, in which more than 600 participants were informed about the direct relationship between sustainability and marine fauna. TOUCH of Hollywood glamour is coming to Spain as one of the world’s most important film festivals is set to start. It may not have the cachet of Cannes, but the San Sebastian International Film Festival is acknowledged to be one of the most important in the annual rota of movie festivals. It has come a long way since its inception in 1953 when it was for Spanish language films only. By 1955 its remit was extended to include ‘foreign’ movies, specialising in colour, and since then it has never looked back. Officially it is one of the 14 ‘A’ category competitive film festivals accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations, and has attracted a host of star names over the years.

TV producers named Tourists of Honour NERJA Council has paid tribute to the producers of Verano Azul. Tourism and Trade Councillor of the Junta de Andalucia Rafael Rodriguez presided over a ceremony held on Balcon de Europa in Nerja to honour Juan Jose Sanchez, Carlos Martinez and Antonio Pozueco, three the producers of the Spanish television series Verano Azul. National Police help to fight fruit theft NATIONAL POLICE have joined in the fight against fruit theft. Since Tuesday last week the National Police have been combing crop fields in Velez Malaga to prevent mango theft. Mangoes are easy to steal and can be sold on the market at good prices. Not only have the National Police been keeping crop fields under surveillance day and night with a helicopter, but they have also established numerous checkpoints on local roads and conducted searches in stores and

markets, said growers’ association Asaja Malaga in a statement. Asaja President Baldomero Ballido and Asaja General Secretary Benjamin Fauli said they were pleased with the measures taken to prevent fruit theft in Velez Malaga. “We know how difficult it is to keep all crop fields under surveillance, but we Velez Malaga farmers feel supported by law enforcement,” they said. Funds to support Axarquia towns PRESIDENT of the Commonwealth of Costa del Sol-Axarquia Municipalities, Oscar Medina, has defended the support it provides to local towns. The aim is to improve the quality of life of residents, said Medina after a meeting with Sayalonga Mayor Antonio Jesus Perez to discuss future projects and investments. The meeting was proof of the cooperation between the Commonwealth and Sayalonga, said Medina, and added that

the Sustainable Tourism Initiative of Axarquia (ITS) was to grant a €50,068 subsidy to Sayalonga to improve the accessibility and access to Museo Morisco. Earlier this year the Commonwealth provided a €4,732 grant to the municipality, as part of a €130,000 budget to be invested in projects in the Axarquia. Mayor Perez thanked the Commonwealth for the allocated funds and emphasised the importance of new infrastructure.

Arch to be rebuilt VELEZ MALAGA Council is to rebuild an arch demolished five years ago. Council authorities presented a €55,000 project on Wednesday last week to rebuild the arch which used to be on Paseo de Andalucia and was demolished in June 2009 by the tripartite government. Mayor Francisco Delgado Bonilla said the construction project was proof of commitment to the 3,000 residents who signed a petition to keep the arch from being demolished. “I would have liked to have it rebuilt before, but the council had other priorities,” said Bonilla, who added that the execution period was 10 days and the arch would be inaugurated on September 23.

Art proves a draw MORE than 18,000 people have visited the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo Francisco Hernandez since its inauguration in September 2013. Clean our streams demand VELEZ MALAGA Council has urged the Junta de Andalucia regional government to clean five local streams. N recent weeks the world has watched, powerless, as three brave men have been butchered by monsters. The murders of James Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Cawthorne Haines have shaken us in a way that the deaths of thousands in Iraq and Syria did not. But maybe now, finally, our governments will do something about it. Over the last year, ISIL has brought nothing but instability, terror and unimaginable bloodshed to Syria and Iraq. Countless have been killed at the hands of these animals under the guise of an ideology that has no place in any religion. If a terrorist organisation can indiscriminately kill journalists and aid workers, then nobody is safe. Any one of us could be next. James Foley and Steven Sotloff were journalists, just trying to do their job and report the truth to the

world. They were killed because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. David Cawthorne Haines was an aid worker providing food, medicine and comfort to those who needed it. There is no reason on earth as to why he should have been killed except for pure sadism. Alan Henning, possibly ISIL’s next victim, is a taxi driver who decided to drive aid to Syria. His life, and the lives of his family, have been turned upside down because he refused to sit idly by whilst others suffered. We cannot stay silent while he suffers. Do nothing and we are as guilty as those who are committing these barbaric crimes. How many more must die before our governments act? Why have they still not done anything? This uncontrolled violence must be brought to an end, and those with the power to do so must act now. See Page 27

Thanks to all good Samaritans ON Tuesday, September 2, I was in Garrucha waiting for the bus to take me to Mojacar. I suffered a dizzy spell and was helped by a number of people. The owner of a café brought me into his premises and made me comfortable. An off-duty nurse assisted me and insisted I needed to go to the hospital. I did not want to make a fuss but she said it was necessary, so she called for an ambulance. An English couple cooled me down with a fan, which was most welcome. A lady called Rosalie (I did not get her surname) stayed with me throughout my ordeal. She accompanied me in the ambulance and stayed with me at the hospital, translating my symptoms to the doctor. Get learning REGARDING the Language hurdle letter, what would anyone expect at any call centre in Britain? Would we expect them to speak Spanish? Of course not, so why do people here expect staff to speak English? If people are not prepared to learn the language, then they should leave. I would say the same to anyone who wishes to settle in Britain: learn English or get out. In Britain we speak English and in Spain they speak Spanish: where is the difficulty? People who make no effort to learn are ignorant, arrogant and an embarrassment. It really is not difficult to learn, we have done it with absolutely no previous language experience, so just try. Prickly subject THIS year the Mojacar area has seen a plague of tiny greenishwhite flies. They attack the prickly pears which are part of our traditional landscape and act as natural fire breaks. They have spread into our gardens and are killing other plants and may even threaten vegetables if left unchecked. They are so small they can penetrate mosquito screens and infest the inside of our houses after dark. Why has there been no action by the authorities? If the cacti are killed off the nature of our area will change drastically. Why should it be left only to house owners to buy expensive

Herbal remedies THANK you for this week’s article by Dick Handscombe (Herbs can improve your diet and health). It was one of the most interesting and informative newspaper articles I’ve read in years. Here in Almond Court we’re lucky enough to have much of what he recommends: a peaceful garden area with a pristine swimming pool, an immaculate lawn and stately trees for admiration. We have a shady arbour amid shrubs and aromatic herbs for contemplation and a raised terrace with tables and parasols for conversation. THERE has been a remarkable shift in the demography of Mediterranean Spain over a very short time. By the time I settled here in 2008 the region between Gibraltar and Valencia was under British occupation. Most businesses set out their stalls accordingly. A Spanish restaurateur in Torrevieja explained to me that he could survive if unable to speak Spanish, but the ability to communicate in English kept him solvent. As I strolled esplanades the second language heard spoken was English. This is no longer the case. According to national statistics 90,000 (22.8 per cent) Brits abandoned Spain in 2013. How many others have since died is anyone’s guess. Spain has lost much of its appeal as a viable place to work or set up a business. The Russian presence is widespread, but their being treated as the pariahs of Europe has reduced Russian tourism and investment in Europe by 10 to 40 per cent

depending on country. Britain has lost its dominance. The Costa communities are now a blend of many nationalities. At the onset of what I had hoped would be a wonderful evening’s entertainment the night’s performer appeared. Having seen Simon a year or so earlier I groaned. His well received repertoire, then at an Irish theme venue, was strictly to British taste; much of it 1960s pop. This was going to go down like a lead balloon. At this venue, Brits were very much the minority. Our fellow diners comprised a blend of Spanish, Russian, German and other nationalities. The audience had changed; had Simon? His performance that night was internationally popular trad-jazz, parody, Latin American, light classical, waltz, oompah and Western European favourites. Well done, that man. Just add the Kalinka song; learning the balalaika can be done another time. Many of the early departed 90,000 Brits simply refused to change with the times. I know an entertainer likely to grow richer by moving with the times.

Theatrics over some goldfish is quite a saga LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

KNOW we are a nation of animal lovers, but the theatrical goldfish saga that came to light last week really did tip the scales. (Scales, geddit? Suit yerself). Apparently in a recent modern-day interpretation of Richard III, a member of the audience was ‘horrified’ by what she considered cruelty to a goldfish! The lady in question, who was a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), was sitting in the front row. In a letter to the producers, she complained that when the Duke of Clarence’s life

was dispatched in a tank of water, the lives of the goldfish swimming around in it were being placed in peril of injury or death! You really couldn’t make it up. In the letter, the group insisted that goldfish were intelligent, sensitive animals that possess ‘long-term memories and complex social structures.’ Despite the fact that the fish were supplied by a reputable company and cared for under RSPCA conditions, such was the onslaught from these people, that for a bit of peace, the company has actually withdrawn them from the show. (I bet their agent wasn’t too happy with that!) I mean, give us a break. ‘Long-term memories?’ My daughter has had a goldfish in a bowl for six years after

winning it at a fairground. I understood that the reason it kept good and healthy and didn’t go doolally was because it kept forgetting it had already just done a circuit. The mind boggles. On a more serious note, the tragic kennel fire which took the lives of 53 dogs last week was indeed a heartrending event. However, the more than £1 million (€1.26 million) that poured in within days was, I felt, a little excessive. I wonder how much was donated by the public to help the children and refugees starving in the hell-holes of the Middle East in the same short period? Nowhere near that figure, I’ll be bound. Makes ya think, dunnit? I haven’t broached on the ‘Scottish day of reckoning’

yet, mainly because I didn’t want to upset my Scottish friends. But as this piece comes out on the day of the referendum, I just thought I’d throw in my three penn’orth. I hope everyone votes with their head and not their hearts. We really are sorry for Bannockburn. We really would have cheered for Scotland in the World Cup assuming you’d been in it! And we really would rather

we all stayed together. Seven out of 10 English people agree with me and frankly I wouldn’t trust Alex Salmond further than I could toss a caber. No is the only decision that makes any sense. You know it makes sense. Keep that mail coming, I can take it.

MOST weeks I am asked by someone ‘Where can we buy organic/ecological vegetables and fruit? It is not as easy to buy them here as it was in England, France, Germany or Switzerland?’ Unfortunately these people who moved to Spain for a healthy lifestyle are correct. Except for a few regions, particularly in Andalucia, it is not as if Spain has a significant presence in European organic farming. But recognise that an olive is a fruit and the growth of ecological olive oil is a major factor in the growth statistics for Spain. Essentially five factors make it difficult to source ecological fruit and vegetables. • The relatively few farmers who are prepared to produce products without using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and weed killers, genetically modified seeds or growth hormones. The latter especially in the production of meats and eggs. • The fact that it is easier for farmers to export 80 per cent of their produce in bulk rather than sell locally in Spain. • Many local small scale agriculturalists, some of whom grew things by organic methods even if not officially registered,

water shortages. If you are lucky you will have local organic growers selling at farmers markets or operating weekly box schemes with boxes for pick up or delivery.

The latter box system is growing but it has a long way to go to meet demand. So for most of us the best solution is to grow your own. It is not difficult, as seeds,

plantlets, ecological fertilisers, insecticides and fungicides are relatively easy to find compared with 15 years ago when we started and were thought to me mad by local chemical

enthusiasts who tried to impress us with one kilo tomatoes and cabbage size lettuces each with large surface areas for chemical contaminations. Most importantly you do not need much space as much of a family’s vegetable needs can be met by growing your favourite veggies in builder’s buckets, raised beds, growing tables or 20 square metre veggie plots. A copy of ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain,’ or ‘Apartment Gardening - Mediterranean Style,’ will soon get you on your way and avoiding early day problems. 120,000 Porsche cars delivered to customers worldwide STUTTGART based sports car manufacturer Porsche has handed over 120,000 new vehicles to customers the world over from January to August 2014. That is an increase of 12 per cent in comparison to the same period last year. In August alone the company delivered around 15,000 vehicles a jump of 30 per cent in comparison to the same month last year. Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG, said: “Over the course of this year, we have achieved quite a strong growth worldwide. We posted two-digit growth in Europe as well despite existing uncertainties in several markets. “The new Cayenne will provide further stimulus for growth during the next few months and

support our qualitative growth strategy.” So far this year, Porsche has recorded similar growth rates in its three biggest sales regions. The sports car maker has announced an increase of 16 per cent in Europe: a little less than 39,000 new cars were delivered to customers. In China, more than 28,000 vehicles were handed over in the period from January to August 2014, outmatching the figure of the previous year by 15 per cent.

PORSCHE CAYENNE: Will provide further stimulus for growth. In the US market, deliveries rose 12 per cent, to reach a sales figure of nearly 32,000 units sold. With an increase of 23 per cent, the Panamera

posted the highest growth in the ongoing year: 16,700 sport sedans were handed over to customers all over the world. The second generation

of the Cayman midengine sports car coupé was also very popular and outdid last year’s figure by 16 per cent, with 7,200 vehicle deliveries.

Toyota Ft-1: a car fit for superheroes HOT in the wheeltracks of the highperformance FT-1 ‘Vision GT’ concept Toyota revealed earlier this week, a new ‘real-world’ version has been unveiled. The latest interpretation of the show-stopping concept coupe features new graphite paintwork in place of the vibrant red featured on the original concept, first seen at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. There is also a new interior treatment, with saddle tan leather elements to give a more sophisticated feel.

The FT-1’s interior designers drew their inspiration from modern superhero films, particularly their use of high-tech performance materials for the character’s costumes, as opposed to the bright tights and garish colours sported by more traditional characters. To achieve the FT-1’s advancedlooking, intricately detailed interior, Toyota’s CALTY design team in California compared leather thicknesses, grain sizes and textures to find the perfect combination. Raised metal mesh provides

ventilation for the seats, while also lending a more textural, bold effect that complements the cabin’s metal accents. An embossed pattern on the instrument panel leather creates a 3D, technical look. Selene Lee, a CALTY designer, said: “From the start of the FT-1 project, we wanted the driver to have a feeling of flow while at the wheel - to be able to focus on the road and nothing else.
