High-speed train back on track in Almeria MINISTER for Public Works, Ana Pastor, has made an important announcement regarding the AVE train line. It comes at a crucial time for the government with political pressure building in respect of the delays in pushing the line forward. AVE had already announced the Murcia completion date as March 2015, yet any dates for Almeria had been slow in coming. There has been no progress on the train line for more than three years. Speaking to press at an opposition PSOE party meeting before the announcement, Juan Carlos Navas Perez, PSOE representative in Almeria said: “From the PP government we
have not had a single tender. This meeting is a measure of pressure to display not only the benefits of connecting Almeria with the AVE, but also with Murcia. The high-speed line would not be as profitable in the neighbouring region if it were not connected to our province.” He continued: “The arrival of the AVE to Almeria also marks the entry of Andalucia to the Mediterranean.” However, later the same day, Pastor announced that the section of the AVE line between Pulpi and Cuevas will be open for tender at the end of October, giving the green light to progress on the high-speed line. This is the first instalment of the AVE Murcia-Almeria to be
implemented in the province, with the exception of the tunnels already built in the Sorbas area. It has a size of 12.2 kilometres and a planned budget of €86 million. Secretary General for the PSOE in Almeria, Jose Luis Sanchez Teruel, responded to the announcement, describing it as ‘good for the province.’ Speaking to radio station Cadena SER, Teruel said: “Whatever work enables the AVE to reach the province is good for everyone,” but added: “I have to see it first. First the minister announces it and then it is to be published in the official bulletin.” The announcement coincides with the visible progress on Parque de la Estacion in Almeria City.

CANTORIA: Ex-mayor accused of authorising construction on rural land.
On trial again for llegal housing
FORMER mayor of Cantoria, Pedro Llamas, who has already been charged for similar crimes, faces a new trial in October for allowing the building of illegal homes. Llamas is accused of authorising the construction of 17 homes on undeveloped land, and allowing the granting of licences for the supply of water and electricity. He is being charged with an alleged breach of trust regarding planning. The prosecution intends to request nine
penalties and three years of disqualification from public office. Joining him under scrutiny is builder, APR, for developing on an area of 1.8 hectares of rural land in the hamlet of Media Legua. The developer is accused of a crime against planning, with the prosecution seeking 21 months in prison and a fine of â‚Ź12 per day for 18 months, as well as disqualification from any job related to construction for two years.

5 years for hostage taking A MAN accused of holding his girlfriend captive for more than 24 hours in a house has accepted his sentence of five years and one month. JAGR, who had been held in custody, had one sentence of 21 months reduced to 10 months for habitual violent crime. However, the request of four
years in prison for the illegal detention of his girlfriend was accepted by the prosecution. JAGR resumed a relationship with his girlfriend in December 2012 after being convicted of causing her criminal injuries and being banned from approaching her for a period of 18 months.
From then, until March 2013, the victim suffered violence and physical aggression alongside drugging and intimidation. On March 19 he took his girlfriend hostage. She eventually managed to escape while he was distracted and jumped from the roof of the house, breaking her left foot.

Celebrating all things Catalan
ODAY (Thursday) is the National Day of Catalonia. Traditionally a day to celebrate the region’s heroes, it has also become a focus point for many people to demonstrate for Catalan independence. All around the region, and particularly in the capital Barcelona, there will be events and demonstrations planned to mark the day, which is held on September 11 every year. Organisations and political parties will lay flowers and wreaths at monuments to local heroes throughout the region. There will be political demonstrations, many calling for independence, and meetings in memory of the solidiers who defended Barcelona during the war of the Spanish Succession.

THE central government has reaffirmed its commitment to the German-Spanish astronomical centre (CAHA) at Calar Alto located in Gergal, Almeria. The government said: “We have no plans to close these facilities while still making efforts to achieve economic viability of the centre and maintain its operation once the German partners retire in 2018”. The centre recently discovered a planet outside our solar system in the last stages of its life.
Blood day for Guardia Civil GUARDIA CIVIL officers turned out in force again this week for the latest blood donation day at their headquarters in Almeria. The project has been carried out two or three times each year since 2005 with officers from the Guardia Civil and their families attending to donate blood. In just 3.5 hours 39 individuals donated blood.

Electricity bills are set to rise FACUA Consumers in Action has released a report to show that a governmental regulatory change that occurred this year will not lead to tariff cuts, but gives complete freedom to the sector to
implement massive increases. Looking at the month of August, the average user already pays 1.4 per cent more than in August 2013. Using the applied rates for August, a monthly consumption of 366kWh with a contracted capacity of 4.4kW will cost €75.87 (taxes included). Users with lower levels of consumption will experience the highest price hike, given the increase that the government has approved for the basic fee for contracted power. A user with a power of 4.4kW Esperanza Perez asks some pointed questions and a consumption of 250 kWh will pay 3 per cent more in August rates compared to the same month in 2013.
Where is the money going?
SOCIALISTS in Nijar have accused the town’s mayor of hoodwinking Puebloblanco residents over the new water supply. The Socialist party (PSOE) has asked the mayor to clarify who the developer and contractor are for water connection to Puebloblanco with a budget of €700,000.
According to Esperanza Perez, the PSOE spokesperson, the mayor has refused to reveal who has been awarded the contract. The mayor, through the company Emanagua, which he chairs, is claiming payments of €1,000 from each of 220 houses in the neighbourhood for the completion of the work.

Arboleas mayor answers critics RESPONDING to comments circulating in the Arboleas area, regarding publicity produced in dual languages, and challenging the dual nature of the town hall, the mayor of Arboleas, Cristobal Garcia, has released a statement. In it, he said: “There are 40 different nationalities living and coexisting in Arboleas, the majority being European citizens and a few from Hispanic America and Africa. The 5,000 inhabitants of Arboleas today are basically divided in
the following way: 1,570 Spanish inhabitants and 3,240 British inhabitants. The rest are of other nationalities. “We have British councillors who form part of the government team, and who speak both languages. 500 Germans cruise into port THE cruise ship Deutschland docked at Almeria Port for the first time this week, bringing with it 500 passengers.

TV programme films in Almeria DOCUMENTARY ‘España a vela’, a cultural programme screened on Spanish television channel La 2, has been filming in Almeria. The documentary, directed by Miguel Raposo, features a yacht travelling around the coast of Spain, stopping at various places of interest. This week the yacht, Gran Jotiti, moored in Aguadulce while the film crew explored the area. They travelled to the capital to visit the Alcazaba as well as to Tabernas to see first-hand where film studios have shot classic spaghetti westerns and, more recently, Exodus, the blockbuster movie starring Christian Bale and Aaron Paul. The crew were particularly taken with Cabo de Gata and very vocal in their praise of the area. The yacht has already visited Granada and will be sailing on to Murcia after Almeria.

Junta urged to speed up funds HUERCAL OVERA has urged the Junta de Andalucia (regional government) to resolve Emple@Joven, a programme that provides funding to enable jobs for 69 young unemployed residents. Councillor for Employment, Monica Navarro, explained that the town council has written to the Junta regarding the serious problem of unemployment and the funding promised by the Junta to help. She said: “We have generated great expectations with this programme in Huercal Overa that should benefit 69 youths. We are receiving multiple enquiries from jobseekers about the start date, but we can’t give them an answer because it is not a question for local government.” Navarro pointed out that although the programme had three months to begin, the town hall was committed to the speedy resolution of claims and the amount of income allocated by the Junta to the town hall, income that has not yet been made available. Without these funds, the councillor pointed out that the jobs will not be available. The Emple@Joven programme promotes and funds a range of

Jobs for 12 in Pechina area PECHINA municipality has announced plans to employ 12 people for maintenance positions in the town during 2014 and 2015. The jobs will be provided and financed by the PFEA (Development plan for agricultural employment). The objective is the
maintenance and repair of green areas and roads throughout the town. The budget of this phase is €14,160, of which Pechina will pay 8 per cent. A second project is also due to launch, this time aimed at urban infrastructure, with a much higher budget of €142,424 and a timescale
Two in Almeria fire FIRE broke out in the kitchen of a home in Avenida de la Estacion in Almeria City at the weekend. Two occupants, one aged 72 and the other aged 67 suffered from smoke inhalation and were transferred by ambulance to Torrecardenas hospital. One of the occupants alerted the fire brigade and advised they had already inhaled smoke. The younger of the two occupants also suffered an anxiety attack. The kitchen suffered major damage and some animals that lived in the home were also affected by smoke.

A great time at Disney! REGULAR readers will recall the fundraising effort to enable children from Vera Orphanage to visit Disneyland Paris. The trip happened last weekend and Wendy Lester from Spanish Property Choice in Vera has let Euro Weekly News know how it went. “The orphans eventually got to Disney last Friday. Billy and I went with them on the minibus at stupid o’clock on Thursday night/ Friday morning. We collected them in the dead of the night, all bleary-eyed and they slept on the coach. “We checked them in and gave each of the children an extra €20 to put in their bags. One little boy smiled so much, I thought his
head was going to fall off. They were all beaming. “We left them there, and after a few minor hitches they arrived and met our man ‘on site’ at Disneyland, Philip Shurer. He arranged for them to have VIP treatment and behind-thescene meetings with the stunt men. They had a truly phenomenal time. “We went to the orphanage this evening to see the children, who were still on Cloud Nine. They all
wrote thank-you letters. One girl even wrote her letter in English. “Thanks to everyone who donated, and huge thanks to people who gave up their time or money to make this dream possible. Without the help of all the readers of Euro Weekly News and the generosity of people this could not have happened. “We have a couple of photographs but due to the circumstances surrounding the orphans and the charity we are not permitted to use them publicly. “However, anyone who is passing the Spanish Property Choice office can pop in any afternoon between 4pm and 5pm, and have a really quick look,” said Wendy.

Almeria airport passenger numbers up ALMERIA airport has reported an increase of 7 per cent in passengers during the first eight months of 2014, compared to the same period last year. The number of travellers who passed through the bustling Almeria airport was 535,837, 528,527 of whom were on commercial flights. Of that number, 228,789 travelled within Spain while 299,738 opted for international connections.
Half a ton of cocaine seized NATIONAL Police working with the tax agency have seized half a ton of cocaine from a ship just off the coast of Almeria. The 59-metre vessel, the Mungo, and flying a Tanzanian flag, was approached by two patrol boats 13 nautical miles from Isla de Alboran close to Almeria’s southern coast. The four crew members, all Turkish nationals, were arrested. Initially no drugs were found, but evidence confirming suspicions that the vessel could be used to transport narcotics came to light, causing the police to intensify their search. Eventually the large haul of cocaine was located under metres of chain in the anchor tank. Each bale of cocaine was wet and had its own flotation device and reflective tape, indicating the drugs had been dropped from another ship to be collected by the Mungo.
Based on this data, domestic air traffic increased by 9.6 per cent compared to the same eight months in 2013, and international traffic increased by 5.3 per cent.

Ashya King in Prague for cancer treatment ASHYA KING left Malaga’s Children’s Hospital on Monday at 8.20am after a stay of eight days. The Junta de Andalucía (regional government) gave the go-ahead for the five-year-old to be moved to Prague in the Czech Republic to receive Proton Beam Therapy. Ashya left the hospital in a special ambulance which took him to the airport. He was accompanied by police in an operation designed to maximise his comfort and privacy. Brett King, the boy’s father, followed the ambulance in a taxi with
the family’s lawyer, Juan Isidro Fernandez. The ambulance entered the airport through a restricted area whilst Mr King had to enter through the main entrance. Hospital authorities said the boy was able to travel as all the correct documentation was in place, and a medicallyequipped aeroplane was available. Ashya’s case hit the headlines when his parents removed the five-year-old cancer sufferer from hospital in the UK and travelled to Spain. An international arrest warrant was issued and his parents were taken
into custody when the family was discovered at a hostel in the Axarquia near Malaga. Ashya was admitted to hospital while his parents were taken to Madrid for an extradition hearing. Following public pressure, the UK authorities withdrew the arrest warrant, although Ashya remained a ward of court. The Junta de Andalucia pointed out that under regional law the wellbeing of children always outweighed any other legal considerations and it had worked to permit Ashya’s transfer to Prague for the therapy.

Spain stocks up on riot gear for winter THE Spanish Government is spending nearly €1 billion on riot gear for its police forces as various protestors prepare for strikes. From shields to stab vests and the purchase of new truck-mounted water cannon, an anti-riot measure used during Franco’s dictatorship and the transition to democracy, they have gone all out. “These water cannon can cause severe injuries and commotions when used at a short distance,” stated Angel Gonzalo from Amnesty International. The activist group ‘Coordinadora 25-s’ has predicted a season of protests, which they’re calling “the autumn of confronting power and institutions” which has its roots in the ‘Indignados’ movement. Protests against the new draft bill against abortion and a demonstration to demand a referendum on the monarchy are also in talks.
First-person accounts of riots in Madrid and Barcelona claim that police treated peaceful protestors in the same way as those who showed violence towards them. The police officers’ union said that the purchases were likely to be just part of an effort by the government to update obsolete equipment. “We have a problem with equipment,” said Javier Estévez of the police union, pointing to a protest last March which left 67 police officers injured. “We don’t have the best or even up-to-date equipment,” he said, despite the obligation that the government has to protect the police. While his group opposed the purchase of the water cannon, he waved aside concerns over the other purchases, noting: “When this gear is used properly, there’s nothing wrong with it, because it’s in line with Spanish legislation.”

2.5m Spanish children are at risk of poverty ALMOST 50 per cent of single-parent families find it hard to tackle unforeseen expenses, pay the rent and feed their children a balanced diet. In other words, 50 per cent of the children from single-parent households are at risk of poverty. Children under 18 are especially vulnerable to the risk of poverty and social exclusion and in
Spain, 29.9 per cent of minors, 21.9 per cent of adults and 14.8 per cent of people older than 65 are severely materially deprived or live in households with very low work intensity. These are some of the daunting conclusions drawn by the third report on children published by Educo and based on data from Eurostat, the European Commission and the
National Statistics Institute (INE). Figures show that as many as 2.5 million Spanish children are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, which means 500,000 more than seven years ago, when the crisis broke out. As reported by Educo, this can be attributed to a number of factors. For instance, the characteristics of every individual household: data show that children from single-parent homes are at a higher risk, followed by children from large families, where the risk of poverty increases to 47 per cent. According to the report, the risk of poverty increases by almost 50 per cent in
families with more than two children. Unemployment is another important factor when determining if a child could be at risk of social exclusion or poverty. Figures show that almost 1 million Spanish families with children are currently affected by unemployment and that 40 per cent of them find it hard to make ends meet by the end of the month. Another factor is the insufficient financial aid provided by local administrations to families at risk. “It is only considered when the family already has problems and not pre-emptively,� said General Director of Educo Jose Maria Faura.

N these days of tension between Russia and the West over Ukraine, it is good to see ordinary people doing what they can to improve understanding between different cultures. It is all too easy to demonise people from faraway lands and paint them in black and white. But living on the Spanish Costas it is far easier to get an understanding of different cultures simply because there are so many of them making up this cosmopolitan society. But that counts for nothing if they do not mingle and instead stick to their own. That is why events like the Russian Cultural Meeting Point in Marbella are so important. As people get to know each other and their points of view, distrust evaporates as understanding grows.

Common sense ASHYA KING is in Prague to get treatment for his cancer. In the end, a mass breakout of common sense came to the fore. The UK authorities dropped the arrest warrant against his parents, Spanish authorities released them and the Junta de Andalucia regional government worked to ensure that Ashya could travel abroad. A shame that common sense could not have been shown a little earlier. We wish Ashya and his loving family all the best, and our prayers go with them.

Female drunk-driver numbers double RECENT figures show that the number of women convicted of drink-driving offences has doubled in the last few years. Apparently the problem derives from the fact that 55 per cent of women say they have no idea what the legal limit is or how many glasses of their favourite drink that entitles them to. One in six women admitted to driving whilst under the influence last year, a figure which suggests that 2.6 million women are knowingly driving over the legal limit. The survey, conducted by Direct Line Insurance and the transport organisation Rees Jeffreys Road Fund, released the figures, stating that in 2009 the

Fiscal fraud clampdown ANTI-FRAUD measures earned the Spanish government €5.5 billion in the first six months of this year. It was the best half-year result ever, announced Cristobal Montoro, who heads the Finance ministry and Spain’s tax authority Hacienda. The government’s efforts to bring the submerged economy to the surface are getting results, Montoro said, and this was reflected in increased VAT (IVA) income. In the first six months of the year Hacienda’s revenue from VAT grew by 6.8 per cent although earnings from other taxes rose 5.3 per cent.
“More income from the consumer tax should signal increased spending but revenue is ahead of the way the economy is evolving,” Montoro pointed out. Hacienda is also receiving more corporation tax, the minister added. In 2011 Spain’s large companies paid 3.8 per cent, but a year later this rose to 5.3 per cent and owing to changes in the law is now expected to have reached 9 per cent in 2013. For the first time 134,000 Spaniards and residents had to declare assets and holdings outside Spain, Montoro explained, an innovation that earned another €88 billion for the government.

More out of jobs AFTER falling for six consecutive months, Spain’s unemployment figures rose once more in August. The number of jobless increased by 8,070, bringing a national total of 4,427,930 according to the latest Ministry of Labour figures. This is normal as unemployment figures have risen each August since 1990, the ministry said.
Layoffs loom CAIXABANK’S purchase of Barclays España will bring staff reductions, revealed sources close to the operation. Around 50 per cent of the 2,400 employees at 270 Barclays branches throughout Spain are likely to be made redundant, with restructuring costs borne by buyer and vendor, the same sources said.

IT was in the 1970s when an Equal Pay Act was introduced in the UK, which outlawed favouring one sex over another in terms of pay and conditions in the workplace. Forty years on and it appears that female bosses are still earning only three-quarters as much as their male colleagues - meaning they would have to work until they were nearly 80 to catch up with men’s lifetime earnings, according to new figures. With such workplace sexism obviously still in full swing it should come as no
big surprise then to hear that 40 per cent of managers questioned in another recent study admit that they would avoid hiring younger women to try and not have to deal with maternity leave. More than 40 per cent also admitted that they would be wary of hiring a woman who has already had a child or hiring a mother for a senior role. While 25 per cent said they would rather hire a man to get around issues of child care when a woman does return to work, with 44 per cent saying the financial costs to their business because of maternity leave are a significant concern. Ashya’s rights trampled IT is possibly better not to put on paper one’s utter disgust and censure of the British oncologist who had been treating little Ashya King as well as the British police. Every single person on earth or in this case the parents of this young boy - has the total right to decide to change a physician if he or she so wishes, especially as it is obvious that the parents and the physician were no longer seeing eye to eye as regards the boy’s treatment. The actions of the parents, well thought-out and carefully planned, are more than commendable and should be applauded. It was not in anybody’s interest to have an international arrest warrant issued against them. I applaud them fully and fervently wish a complete recovery for little Ashya! Spurious charges I AGREE 100 per cent with the ‘No means No’ headline in the Euro Weekly News regarding rape. I even agree that although a female wants to dress like a hooker this does not automatically mean that she is asking to be treated like one. At this point I would also like to digress and ask why hookers should not be afforded the same respect and consideration as other women. But back to the subject of rape: what about ‘victims’ who are too drunk to accurately recall what really happened? What about women who cry ‘Rape!’ simply for the hell of it or

Fenced in TWO stories in last week’s paper really got my blood to boiling point, the first about circuses. There was a circus in Torrevieja last week and there were three elephants in a small enclosed area, just swinging their heads back and forth. I passed on more than three occasions and each time it was the same. To me this was disgusting cruelty as an elephant needs 200 litres of water a day and I would bet my life they didn’t get it. It’s time circuses were banned. They may be entertainment to some but not the animals. The next was the story about immigrants being abused for trying to get into Spain. The fence is there to stop them so if they choose to climb over and disobey the law they have to expect repercussions. Surely they don’t think the police are going to say, “Hi, come in and welcome. Credit crisis I AM non-resident in Spain but have a holiday home in Turre which I visit several times a year. Up until June I owned a car which I kept at Almeria airport for my use when visiting Spain. I reinsured the car for a 12-month period in March 2014. In June I decided to sell the car because I realised it was no longer financially viable for me to keep it and I will use hire cars in the future. Having rescinded the policy I was told there was credit of €186 or so on my file but only available to me as part-payment against any future motor policy taken out. The broker told me this is common practice among Spanish motor insurers but I have since established this is not the case. Moral: check carefully. David Metcalf, Turre (Almeria)

Culture with a Russian flavour A TASTE of Russia came to Spain as the hand of friendship was held out between the two countries. A four-day programme of events was held in Marbella for the First Russian Cultural Meeting Point. It was a way for the Spanish, indeed all the nationalities represented on the Costa del Sol, to learn more about the cultural phenomenon that is Russia. Steeped in history, the nation has a unique artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage. The event was a spectacular affair which brought together the different cultures to
improve their understanding of each other. It took place mainly in the Centro Comercial Marina Banus in Marbella’s Puerto Banus. Linda Echeverria, who organised the event, said: “These days have served to create a cultural bridge between the two countries. We have provided an approach that has created a mutual understanding and very positive feeling for both communities, particularly those living in Andalucia.” She added that the four days of fashion, dance, art and music featuring artists including Maxim Rubtsov on flute, pianist Carmen Pérez Blanco, dancing
group Kalinka with Russian folk songs and dances, magic master Yuri Chuguyev with his vibraphone and artist Juan Anhelo with his threedimensional artwork, were a great success.
The closing ceremony was held, which delighted the 200 attendees. Two fashion shows followed, by Russian designer Valeria Farafonova and Spanish designer Antonia García Galiano.

DO get miffed when my blurb is misinterpreted and subsequently misquoted. At no stage in a previous column did I say that to counteract a possible uprising by militant Islamists, the UK needed an armed force of soldiers patrolling the streets - I saw enough of that in the dark days of Northern Ireland’s ‘Troubles’. What I did, however, suggest was that we needed large numbers of heavily armed special forces, some 5,000 or so per large city, on call and ready to go into action at a moment’s notice. I reiterate that by providing these forces they could nip any uprising attempt in the bud. If rioting extremists are allowed to increase in numbers because they are met with inadequate means, i.e. soft police lines arm-in-arm, subsequently upped to police carrying plastic shields, followed
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT possibly by water cannon (human rights allowing, of course!) and finally the army shooting rubber bullets, the mobs will, by then, be totally out of control and before you can say Allah akbar, involve the UK in unprecedented street conflict which could spread like wildfire. Get in early with a big stick and squash any mob uprising in the shortest possible time. This would also send out the message to other potential terrorists that their actions won’t be tolerated and if they do attempt to disrupt the country, they could be sampling their 72 virgins much earlier than they anticipated. In other words, don’t pussyfoot around! That is something our illustrious leaders still seem to be doing in the face of the so-called
IS. Even after admitting this renegade mob is one of the most dangerous adversaries in history, they still ponce around like indecisive pussycats. By the time they do set up a full-scale bombing campaign, these dangerous animals will have dug in so deep underground that nothing short of a nuke from the air will touch them. (Didn’t they learn anything from Vietnam?) They will then have no choice but to put ‘boots on the ground’ and here we all go again. Another war taking the lives and limbs of our precious young men and women in yet another Godforsaken Middle East hell-hole. The problem is that Cameron has no bottle, Clegg is mentally impaired and Obama, in my opinion, is a closet Islamist. Until they get their acts together, or are replaced, I’m afraid their cowardice will continue to put us in such peril that I fear the

Modern legislation certainly favours the setting up of a whole industry of people advising on ‘risk assessment’ and cracking down on infractions. Or is it just as much the fear - in an age of ambulance-chasing law firms of very costly litigation? Probably a bit of both.
The Health and Safety Act was passed in 1974, but only in recent years has it been so misused. Now everyone’s trying to cover their behinds in case there’s an accident they could be held responsible for (and hence sued for) - much of this petty regulation due to insurance companies, trying to minimise their liability by refusing to pay up. Remember the old mantra: “Where there’s blame there’s a claim...” Isn’t the problem, then, a combination of the current ‘proactive’ nature of risk assessment - making rules to cover what might go wrong so the remotest risk, because it could happen, is legislated against - compounded by over-zealous interpretation by ambulance-chasers and jobsworths? Dear Reader, I must stop my narrative of the Dark Ages concerning the ongoing development of Mojacar Village. A miraculous event has occurred. Not just once but three times in the same week I was asked to pontificate on something of importance concerning the famed and glorified Football War that took place in Mojacar in the mideighties. In that distant past, dark clouds had been brewing for some time. In those earliest days, the known world of Mojacar Village was to be everything to the surrounding area. Life revolved around the Hotel Indalo just like our planets stay in their captured and preordained orbits aound the sun without option for roaming. The beach was a place the village people sent their guests to visit, lifting stones and

itinerants found in the village other than as bothersome invaders. But that evolution snuck up on us during the passage of time. Within 20 years, the beach became an entity on its own. We too started building bars, houses, and shops. Lo and behold, the mountain people started creeping down to enjoy the gambas and popular rice dishes that had become part of our noveau existence. That is, until my friend, Pedro of the Puntazo, committed the ultimate sacrilege of posturing and flipping off those abiding
above us. He put together a seaside football team. He then scheduled them to play the same nearby towns that had long contested fierce rivalry with the villagers. Now, Mojacar had two teams and loyalty soon became fierce. Scandalous. Unbelievable. The village priest was called in to reason with the upstart playa (beach) boys. Just before the entire affair broached into a civil uprising with lots of spilled blood, a truce was organised and a game was to be played. Well, Hell! You can bet that I got involved defending my side of the argument. The town was full of gossip and malicious talk a full two weeks before the encounter. Soon rumours were whispered in the kitchens on the beach that the evil village people were bringing in ‘ringers’ from distant El Ejido and Albox
to aid their side to victory. Never one to be out-manoeuvred, I too made plans. Making a living in those days meant you were involved in construction or were unemployed. Lots of the village’s star players worked directly for me so naturally they gravitated toward my financial leanings. I, too, brought in a few ringers of my own so the village folk would learn we were not just a bunch of burros living on the playa. I gave them ‘both barrels’ and didn’t bother to go to the game nor EVER enquired about the outcome. The beach folk became respectable and appreciated in just one game of football. We had a presence and recognisable value to the overall big scheme of things happening in Mojacar from that moment forward.

HEN proudly you turn your first car’s ignition key you do much more than switch on the engine. This is the key, if not to the universe, as close as you get to it. Like your first romance your first car is never forgotten and one has mixed memories about the experience. With trepidation in my heart and £50 in my damp fist I became the owner of an Isle of Man registered Ford Prefect. There was good reason why I kangaroo-jumped out of the car sales shop front doorway. Clutch? I had never before driven a car but knew the theory. To my undying shame I considered a driving licence and insurance as being surplus to requirements. The salesman was a retired policeman. Back then things were far more relaxed. Mid-shift bus drivers sank several pints. If you could wobble-walk a straight line you were sober. Seat belts were for pilots. What followed was an unfortunate start to a lifetime’s driving experiences few of

The garage owner, putting his head through the window, suggested I take the handbrake off. On a later occasion I was irked by a ‘boy racer’ provocatively gunning his engine. Rising to the challenge I led him and his passenger on a hair-raising chase through the city centre. Not my day; having caught up with me the two foxy cops flashed their warrant cards. They had a sense of humour back then. Having later crashed a milk float the attending officer drily remarked on the delightful glass verge. This cocky cad cockily flipped a coin through the open car’s window into the Mersey Tunnel’s toll basket. Having rebuked the tunnel policeman that the damned barrier had failed to rise, the policeman coolly picked the coin up from the road, handed it to me and then suggested I place it properly in the basket. Things were so much easier back then. Hopefully the long arm of the law is not too telescopic.

Getting ready for a fourth Gogglebox BAFTA-winning show Gogglebox will launch its 12-part fourth series on Friday, September 26 at 10pm (CET). The new series will feature most of the same families and friends from previous runs, along with some new additions to be announced at a later date. Earlier this week, Gogglebox stars Sandy and Sandra were unexpectedly mobbed by fans at a North London outdoor cinema. The pair were set to watch a screening of Grease when they were surprisingly met by the audience wearing Gogglebox masks. Sandy said: “It was really surreal to be walking down the cinema aisle seeing all the Gogglebox faces looking back at us. I loved it.” Sandra added: “It was so much fun to see all the Gogglebox masks, I loved my own so much and wish I could live in it!” It was recently announced that George Gilbey’s family will no longer feature on the

Bridge articles by JUST about every duplicate player uses transfers over partner’s NT opening. In an uncontested auction, responder’s bid of 2♦ shows at least 5 hearts and his bid of 2♥ shows a similar hand with spades. The idea is to get the stronger hand to be concealed, so that the lead comes up to it. Such bids are made on hands from slam and game to part scores trying to find a better spot in which to play. But what do you do when you (as opener) have 4 card support for partner’s transfer? I suggest that a jump to 3 of the transfer suit is in order. The Principle of Total Trumps applies here. In a competitive auction, you bid to the number of trumps you hold between the two hands. Since you don’t know how strong partner is, it makes sense to tell him straightaway that you have four. He may be weak and you may talk the opponents out of their contract. This isn’t so important where your suit is spades, but consider the following auction:

If you had jumped to 3♥ originally, do you think East would them come in with his spades? Unlikely – he’s already passed once, so his bid wasn’t clear. Oh, by the way, if he does come in and you do ‘buy’ the contract, consider playing him for a singleton. But what if partner has a hand like a foot? OK, you may go down but you are unlikely to be doubled. Moreover, you are much more likely to be doubled following the ‘eventual’ rather than the ‘immediate’ auction. But you were always going to support him after interference anyway, weren’t you? So the occasional minus 200 is balanced where you may go for only 100 when
they have 140 or even game. Transfers also work well after
2NT openings. Here is a hand from the club recently:
Dealer South, both non-vul: I was S and opened 2NT, Partner bid 3♦ (transfer) and I jumped to 4♥. He asked for aces with 4NT and, on finding me with 3, bid 6♥. As you can see, the hearts behaved and the only trick lost was A♠. A very nice combined 29 point slam! Pard said afterwards that he wouldn’t have gone ‘looking’ if he hadn’t known about the 9 card trump fit. If you regret that tattoo, remove it A SURVEY in Spain has shown that 60 per cent of people who have a tattoo regret it five years down the line, but are unsure about tattoo removal. If you are thinking about getting one removed, here are some of the most frequently asked questions: How are they removed? In most cases tattoos can be removed by a type of laser generating pulses of energy with a specific wavelength, and it only acts on the ink pigment particles. They remove 85-90 per cent of colours. Pink, yellow and white are most resistant colours. Are the results visible? The results are visible after the first session but look better once past 20-
25 days, which is the time required for the body to remove ink particles through the lymphatic system. It can take between four to eight sessions to fully remove a tattoo. Is it painful? There is less pain in removing the tattoo than having the tattoo in the first place. However, you can apply anaesthetic cream 90 minutes before. Does it scar?
The area should not scar but it’s important to protect the area from the sun and use a moisturising cream and follow any advice from the specialist remover. Can I have another tattoo on the area? Expat gardens being attacked by new pests Dick Handscombe

DURING the past week two friends telephoned about their latest gardening woes. The first friend had just discovered that a large clump of aloes had been killed off by aloe snout weevils ‘Scyphophorus acupunctatus,’ a newproblem-in-Spain-insect that has taken about three years to arrive on the Costa Blanca from the Costa de la Luz. Unfortunately, like the palm weevil, there is no really effective treatment of diseased plants. The insects are brownish and 15 to 30 centimetres in length. The second friend had just discovered that both
GERANIUS: Covered balconies no longer around. their tall specimen Phoenix palms had succumbed to the red palm weevil ‘Rhynchophorus ferrugineus’ in spite of being treated, so a crane lorry will arrive shortly to cut them down and remove them. This weevil is also a type of snout weevil but can be 30 to 50 millimetres long. I am not aware of how the aloe weevil came to Spain but the palm weevil is said to have been imported into Andalucia in 1994 in a batch of diseased palm trees. By 2006 the flying weevils had spread to France. Although destroying the tropical image of the coast line, village squares and gardens, it has not been the most damaging problem to Spain’s floral
image. That spot must be taken by the African Geranium moths ‘Cacyreus marshalli,’ or ‘Tespis Tespis,’ which arrived in the early 1990’s, apparently in a lorry load of geraniums from a Dutch greenhouse. Again it took just a few years to spread along the costas and then inland. Gone now are the large banks of cascading geraniums and apartmentcovered geranius that last for a decade or more. Even planting garlic segments in geranium pots and spraying twice a week with a geranium spray is
not a total solution, for abandoned plants in absentee owner gardens and apartments can be a virulant breeding ground. Other pests that have become a bother during the past 25 years are the Cirtus minero moth and the many fruit flies attacking citrus and other fruit trees, tuti flies attacking tomatoes and many other fly type insects attacking vegetables. I have just read an interesting research paper about citrus pests of importance to the Spanish citrus industry where markets like no blemishes on the skins and any attacks to leaves and flowers can reduce the productivity of trees. The paper reported that for the past 45 years there has been a new imported insect pest every three years with eight in just the past 10 years. From our experience the best thing that expat amateur gardeners can do is to spray fruit trees and diseased vegetable plants regularly with neem oil solutions in water. Another fruit tree problem becoming more common in areas where orchards have been abandoned is honey fungus. The most practical eco solution we have found is to use propylis sprays or treatment of trunks or branches with a small paint brush.

As well as a full a la carte menu, there is an option of a breakfast menu, comprehensive snack menu and three-course Del Dia. The Del Dia is great value at €15 including a half bottle of wine per person, and is served all day, every day. Everyone is catered for at Badgers and this includes the children, with a special menu to keep the little ones happy. I chose to go with the €15 Del Dia, although there were so many dishes I’d like to have tried. To start with I had the Warm Salad of Tandoori Chicken, which was strips of chicken, sautéed with sweet peppers in a spicy tandoori sauce.

The pork was beautifully cooked, and topped with melted Manchego cheese and served on a coarse grain mustard mash with a cider sauce, and finished with perfectly cooked fresh vegetables. For dessert, I chose the Disaronno and White Chocolate cheesecake, which was just
perfect to round off the meal, the distinct flavour of the Disaronno complementing the white chocolate. There is always plenty going on at Badgers with various special menus available throughout the week. The popular Monday night quiz, which
is free to enter, is great fun, with a selection of menu specials that are available on the night from €6. Tuesdays are homemade pie and curry day, with a great
selection all at €8 each. Friday, of course, is fish and chips day with large, beerbattered cod, cod mornay or poached cod on the menu, all served with freshly handcut chips and mushy peas. On Saturday nights you can enjoy the Pasta specials menu from €7. The famous Sunday roast
with a choice of three meats, home-made pie, vegetarian and fish dish, is always popular from €9. Booking is recommended to avoid disappointment, especially at weekends and evenings. Private parties and group bookings are also catered for, with Richard creating bespoke menus to suit your requirements. Bookings are now being taken for Xmas and New Year’s Eve. On Thursday, October 2, Badgers are holding another one of the popular Fashion Shows with Ann Webber from 6pm. Booking is essential as there is limited availability. Badgers is also home to one of the oldest golf societies in Mojacar, and is organised by Richard himself. The society play every Wednesday and Saturday at one of the

Wherever possible, go to the known home page of the program
you want (Microsoft, (K)(L)(X)ubuntu, Libre Office). Rule 2. If Rule 1 isn’t possible, go to a respected provider (Majorgeeks, Free Software Foundation and Sourceforge are safe and clean). Rule 3. If Rules 1 and 2 don’t have what you want then try to avoid ‘dodgy’ sites like Softonic who use a small program (stub) rather than the full program. Investigation into da trails in and around CYCLING club Indalbike in Huercal Overa has reported a number of traps with spikes dotted along a trail located two kilometres behind the castle. MANY people have asked me ‘How to give a cat a pill’ and with the help of Celia Haddon, here is the information you need. Getting pills into cats can be difficult. Always ask for spot-on products, palatable or nice tasting pills, or for products that can be mixed with food, if possible. There is now something called Easytabs, a meat flavoured cover for a pill made by Bayer. Another is called Pill Pockets. You press the pill into the meat pellet. Clever stuff. Other medications may come in malt flavoured creams that can be wiped on to the cat’s mouth so

If you have to give a pill, ask the vet for the smallest pill possible and the one which will last longest, i.e. you want to give a pill once a day rather than four times a day if possible. If you must administer a pill, this is how to do it. Kneel and place your cat
facing away from you between your knees. With thumb and middle finger, pull the cat’s head back until it is facing straight up at the ceiling. It is crucial that the cat’s head must be facing upwards at 90 degrees. Use gentle pressure from thumb and middle finger on either side of the cat’s jaw, at rearmost crease of the lips, to open cat’s mouth. Pop tablet on the tongue as far back down the throat as possible. Close cat’s mouth and keep the head pointing up at the ceiling. Hey presto! The cat will swallow the pill. Other good methods are featured on YouTube and also on www.fabcats.org. For flea and worm treatments, ask for a spot-on rather than a pill. There are now spot-ons for both.

THE latest results from the end of the Campoverde Canine Club (CCC) obedience courses are now in and the winners have been presented with their certificates and trophies at the Polideportivo sports ground in Pinar de Campoverde. The CCC was formed in July 2000, and since then many owners have benefited from expert tuition, by a Home Office approved instructor, and are now proud of the way they are able to control their best friends. First place in the Basic Class went to Pat Frewin and her Lab/Belgian Shepherd, Bailey, with 108.4/110 marks. Second place went to Paul Eyre
and his GSD, Chico, gaining a total of 107.8 marks. Paul gained the second spot well ahead of the rest of the class In first place in the Intermediate Class with a score of 130.8/140 was a poodle, Charlie, and his proud owner, Chris Parkes. Second place in the Intermediate Class was won at a canter by Dave Hook and his GSD, Mata. New courses will be starting very soon. Home mortgages increased in June
THE number of mortgages increased by 19 per cent in June. According to recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of new home mortgages in June added up to 17,137. This represents a 19 per cent increase compared to June 2013. After the negative rates registered in April and May (-13.4 per cent and -3.4 per cent respectively), home mortgages are now in positive
territory thanks to the growth registered in June. On average, home mortgages in June stood at €98,582 - a 1.3 per cent increase compared to June 2013 - and the capital loaned registered a 20.5 per cent increase and amounted to €1.6 million. When compared to May 2014, June saw the number of home mortgages drop by 4.6 per cent. The capital loaned for these home mortgages
decreased by 5.2 per cent, which is below the 22 per cent decrease registered in June last year. The largest numbers of mortgages in June were witnessed in Madrid (3,481), Andalucia (2,900) and Catalonia (2,435). In contrast, in only three regions did mortgages fall below the June 2013 level, in Aragon (-19.3 per cent), La Rioja (-5.8 per cent) and Andalucia (-3.3 per cent). The rest of Spain saw positive annual rates.

Prices increased in August Housing reform in eight Spanish regions grants awarded PROPERTY prices increased in August in eight regions. While it is true that the price of resale housing dropped by 0.4 per cent in August, compared to July, house prices actually increased in eight Spanish regions, led by La Rioja (+1 per cent) and Catalonia (+0.8 per cent), according to idealista.com. In August 2013, prices stood at €1,764 per square metre, but have since dropped by 5.3 per cent. The Basque Country is still the most expensive Spanish region with €2,779 per square metre, followed by Madrid with €2,607 per square metre and Catalonia (€1,926). The least expensive regions are Castilla La Mancha with €1,016 per square metre, Extremadura with €1,038 and Murcia with €1,062. As many as 20 provinces maintained positive price rates in August and the greatest growth was registered in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (+1.6 per cent), Barcelona (+1.4 per cent) and La Rioja (+1 per cent). On the other hand, the sharpest declines were witnessed in Castellon

The most expensive provinces are Guipuzcoa and Vizcaya (Basque Country) with €3,158 and €2,828 per square metre respectively. They are followed by Madrid with €2,607 and Barcelona with €2,213. The cheapest provinces are Cuenca, Toledo and Ciudad Real with €901, €942 and €947 per square metre respectively. Property prices increased in August in 16 Spanish capitals, with the largest
increment being witnessed in Huesca (+2.9 per cent). In contrast, the sharpest drops were registered in Castellon (-3.9 per cent), Huelva (-2.4 per cent) and Logroño (-2.3 per cent). Ever since the housing bubble burst, prices in three Spanish capitals have decreased by more than 50 per cent. The most substantial decreases were witnessed in Lleida and Zaragoza, where prices dropped by as much as 56.2 and 52 per cent respectively.
THE Spanish Government is to provide grants for housing reforms. Through a housing plan approved in July, the Spanish Government is to allocate €2 million to promote rental housing, restoration and energy efficiency. According to the Ministry of Development, restoration activities create three times as many jobs as the construction of new buildings. Therefore, in an effort to support this activity and fight unemployment, Madrid has decided to award a series of subsidies, grants and loans to people who wish to renovate their homes. Thirty-three competitors took part in this best Two from Four team game. The high temperature, humidity and the infamous no second cut from fairway to rough, made this a real test of the ability of the players to keep the ball on the now very narrow fairways. Clear winners were the team of Terry Caddick, Dave Keymar, Geoff Smith and Nigel Greenwood with a score of 82 with the second placed team (on countback) Mark Cuffey, Mark Danson, Dave Sharp and Peter Easthope with 76.
