People power leads to Ashya reunion PEOPLE power has led to the parents of cancerstricken Ashya King being reunited with their five-year-old son. English prosecutors decided to drop the case against Brett and Naghmeh King after more than 160,000 people signed an online petition demanding the release of the couple, who were being held for an extradition hearing. Prosecutors were left scrambling to get in touch with the Spanish authorities to secure the couple’s release after the public outcry. The parents were finally released on Tuesday evening. An international hunt was launched when the boy, who suffers from a brain tumour, was taken from a UK hospital. This thrust Spain into the spotlight after his parents were arrested and prevented from visiting his hospital bedside. Ashya King was left

alone in a Malaga hospital as Brett, 51, and Naghmeh, 45, were remanded in custody on Saturday to await an extradition hearing. They were taken to Madrid to face a judge leaving Ashya all alone in hospital. It was not until Monday that Ashya’s eldest brother, Naveed, was allowed to visit and comfort the boy. By Tuesday his parents had not seen Ashya since their arrest.
The case swept the headlines across the world as first the hunt was launched when Ashya was taken from Southampton Hospital without the consent of doctors, then he was found and his parents arrested. The search had soon focused on Spain where the family was known to have a holiday home, with Guardia Civil staking out their house near Casares on the
Costa del Sol. In fact, he was found at a hostel in Benjarafe in the Axarquia, on Saturday. His parents had posted a YouTube video asking for the hunt to be called off and explaining their actions. In it, Brett said that they were not withdrawing treatment for their son, but rather wanted to seek an alternative not available in the UK. Editor says... Page 24

OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested five people and confiscated food and drink during the inspection of a public establishment in Huercal Overa. The officers discovered a large number of products which had passed their expiry dates, including sweets available for sale to children. Frozen dairy produce, flour, oil, meat, eggs and dried goods were also examined during the operation. Officers from the Guardia Civil told Euro
Weekly News: “Between 70 and 80 per cent of the products were out of date. Some products, such as bottles of oil had expired in 2012.” A fridge containing dairy produce, eggs and sausages was switched off but with a light inside to make it look as if it was working. Insects were found in some products. Officers also discovered that some of the staff had no work contracts.

400 join beach danger demo AROUND 400 residents gathered at La Almadraba de Monteleva in the Cabo de Gata area of Almeria at the weekend for a demonstration. They congregated in the main square and blocked the road through the town for a period of time to demand improvements to the beach, which is affected by the lack of sand. Spokesman for the neighbourhood association of La Almedraba de Monteleva, Francisco Sanchez, said the beach was “fatal so we have decided to protest to get someone to listen to us a little.” The demonstration passed peacefully and without incident, despite the large numbers in attendance.

Bank robbery couple arrested NATIONAL Police have arrested a Spanish couple after a spate of bank robberies. The man and woman, aged 29 and 33, are alleged to have carried out seven robberies in Almeria, stealing a total of €10,700. The wife would enter a bank posing as a customer before the husband would storm in and rob the bank, often using violence. Investigations began in May after the couple assaulted a woman after leaving a bank. She was struck in the head, causing her serious injuries which needed treatment at Torrecardenas Hospital in Almeria City. Six more robberies with intimidation followed, all using the
same modus operandi, which is known in Local Police slang as ‘cogotazo’. This translates as a rabbit punch or a swift blow to the neck. In another of the robberies, an 80-yearold man was assaulted in Nijar. He was struck with such force that he lost consciousness and had to be admitted to Torrecardenas Hospital. On August 28,
National Police were able to identify the couple after witnessing the male suspect fleeing towards Calle Hermano Rufano. Minutes later, the police apprehended him and arrested his wife a few hours later at their house. A search of the house produced clothing matching that described by witnesses at the scene of previous robberies.

El Ejido awarded for drugs work EL EJIDO has been awarded second place for its work in raising awareness of drug
addiction. First place went to Pozuelo in Madrid. The government and FEMP (Federation of
Municipalities and Provinces) recognised El Ejido’s work in drug prevention. The town received second prize at national level, an award which recognises municipalities in the fight against drug abuse and preventative measures within the community. Councillor for Social Services and Women, Julia Ibanez, said: “This is an important recognition of a joint effort being carried out by the town of El Ejido, psychology professionals from Social Services and parents.” Ibanez added: “With this recognition, it provides a stimulus that will encourage future work from everyone with the clear aim of preventing drug abuse and helping families to educate their children.”

German author opens Mojacar celebrations CHRISTIANE GOHL has opened the Mojacar celebrations in honour of St Augustin. The author whose pseudonym is Sarah Lark, is a long term resident of the area having settled in Los Gallardos after years in Mojacar. Christiane describes Mojacar as very special to her, describing “love at first
sight” after arriving in Mojacar on horseback many years ago with friends from Bedar. It took five days of trekking to arrive, culminating in an instant pull for Christiane. She says: “From the first minute I decided that this was where I wanted to live.” Christiane returned to Germany, learned Spanish and moved to
Mojacar. Christiane, writing as Sarah Lark, heard the story of the fountain of Mojacar and wrote a book. The tale is a “historical novel that took place in Mojacar during the reconquest,” said Christiane. She went on to win an international prize for historical novel for Ciudad de Zaragoza.
Berja’s Perillo mill is being restored to start a new life CONSIDERED the most emblematic building in Berja and an architectural gem, the Perillo mill is beginning its new life as restoration is well under way. The restoration began in July in a job that is no small feat. With the exception of the facade and the watermill inside, the 1,000
square metre building spread over three floors, will be completely demolished and rebuilt. In the first phase, the structure will be reinforced and renewed. Then the spaces will be designed to accommodate a new library, tourism office, the
headquarters of Virgitano (historical studies) and a museum. Energy efficient systems are to be installed including heat resistant glazing. Air-conditioning will be installed as well as lifts to provide easy access for people with disabilities.

Energy boost for homes EIGHT municipalities are involved in energy projects with the renovation of homes. The agency for homes and rehabilitation in Andalucia has awarded €40 million across the south of Spain with €2.2 million being made available to Almeria. This cash will benefit 389 public housing properties managed by AVRA in the capital as well as the eight municipalities of Cantoria, Cuevas de Almanzora, Fines, Huercal de Almeria, Huercal Overa, Pechina, Purchena and Senes. This affects approximately 1,600 residents. Meetings are now taking place with the residents to help them understand the planned improvements.
Lopez said the launch of the project, which is expected to complete by the end of this year, will create a major recreational area for the townships. “With this project we will endow the town with a large new park equipped with a host of recreational amenities we hope will please our residents. The space will be christened with the name of la Legion Español,” said Lopez. The new park will cost €393,684.32 and will be located in the area that borders Avenida de la Legion, the A-1000 and the AL-3117. It will have a surface area of more than 10,000 square metres. The park will include a variety of purpose-built sporting areas, including a skate park and seating areas.

Young Nijar socialists take to the beaches YOUNG members of the socialist party (PSOE) in Nijar hit the beaches to help protect the environment.
The youngsters handed out ashtrays to people on the beaches as part of a campaign to keep the

The rambla, which crosses the town from north to south, has considerable space for leisure, and was the location for the feria. A busy time for Civil Protection THE Civil Protection council of Almeria has been involved with 300 preventative activities from January to August. According to figures released by the organisation, 282 preventative and special actions have been carried out in municipalities with less than 20,000
inhabitants. The organisation assists smaller municipalities which do not have their own infrastructure. Providing coverage for festivals, processions, fireworks’ displays, hiking and cycle races are some of the activities that the Civil Protection council helps with. During the recent wildfires in Enix and Alhama, Civil Protection agents assisted the firefighters. They also helped in the hunt for a missing woman. Finance boost for bodega BODEGAS ALTO ALMANZORA has been given a healthy cash injection of €11,500 to promote its wines in foreign markets. Speficially, the funding is to enable the Lucar winery to promote its produce at fairs and exhibitions to be held in the United States, Mexico and India. The finance has come from the European agricultural fund guarantee support programme. Bodegas Alto Almanzora was established in 2004 with the capacity to produce one million litres of wine each year using all the latest technologies applicable to wine production. The company currently exports its wines to Europe, North America and Asia.

Blessed by the bishop ALMERIA City’s bishop has blessed the town hall in Purchena during his tour of the town. Bishop Adolfo Gonzalez Montes was invited by the mayor of the town, Juan Miguel Conchillo Tortosa. He said it was an invitation he was delighted to accept. The 150-year-old building, Casa de Fiscal, has recently been restored for municipal use. The blessing took place in the auditorium in front of a packed audience. The bishop spoke at length about religious freedom and fundamental rights before going on to describe the town as being “rich in history and cultural traditions, full of life and excited hope for a more

It will be held at the Recinto Ferial from 11am until 7pm on Saturday, September 20. Activities include folk music, games, Spanish tapas and English food. There will also be workshops showcasing

Fugitive arrested AGENTS from the National Police have arrested a 27year-old fugitive wanted on an international arrest warrant for capturing women and forcing them into prostitution. Romanian authorities arrested the fugitive, Ramona GB, in 2012 and he faced 18 years in prison for procuring and facilitating prostitution. He was subsequently tried by the judicial court in Galati and sentenced to five years and six months imprisonment. An international warrant was issued in December 2013. Ramona committed the offences, along with others, from 2002 to 2007. The fugitive was arrested in Calle Rueda Lopez in Almeria City.

International tenor to appear in La Alfoquia WORLD-FAMOUS tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan will appear at a charity musical event to be held at the Renfe in La Alfoquia on September 20. Morgan will be supported by the Blues Brothers and Michael Jackson tributes from Benidorm. Fondon fiesta THE population in Fondon tripled to approximately 1,800 during its recent fiesta which closed with fireworks to say goodbye to the Virgen de las Angustias for another year.

Council discounts for Adra seniors ADRA’S pensioners are to benefit from discounts on their municipal bills of up to 70 per cent.
Training for children AS part of a move to help combat truancy and assist underprivileged children in Adra, Cruz Roja (Red Cross) has provided interactive classes. Twelve children, mainly of Moroccan origin, attended the classes which covered various aspects of rescue in and out of the water. Seven teachers also volunteered for the summer classes which were well received by the youngsters.
The measure was unanimously approved by town council members in a move to ease the financial burdens of older residents. Large families who request a discount and comply with specific requirements may also pay less for water rates, rubbish
collection and sewage, as well as people whose income does not exceed the minimum wage. The bonus lasts for two years and may be extended at the request of the holder as long as their financial and/or personal circumstances have not altered.
Alcolea becomes capital for a day ALTHOUGH Alcolea is split administratively between Granada and Almeria, it unified for the day to celebrate one day of being the capital of Alpujarra. More than 10,000 visitors joined the tiny town’s 850 inhabitants for a cultural fair in its 33rd edition, breaking attendance records for the first time. In addition to the organising committee, 100 Alcoleanos volunteered to help make the event the success it went on to be. Cristobal Baños, Mayor of Alcolea, expressed his pride at being a participant and witness at what he described as a ‘historic event’.

What about poor little Ashya?
T
HE treatment of the King family, who took their sick child out of a UK hospital and travelled to Spain, raises serious concerns about the rights of parents. Initially there were worries for the health of five-year-old Ashya, who is seriously ill with cancer. In that case the authorities were probably right to launch a hunt to track down the family. But once found and it became clear the parents were acting, in their opinion, with the best interests of Ashya at heart, was it really necessary to arrest them and whisk them hundreds of kilometres away to Madrid for an extradition hearing? Was it necessary to admit the little boy into hospital and then refuse him the comfort of visits from his obviously loving parents and siblings? A five-year-old-boy, seriously ill in
hospital in a strange land will be a frightened little boy, confused and wondering where his parents are. Who knows what thoughts were going through his head? And what a terrible ordeal for his parents to go through, not allowed to visit their beloved child in hospital, and forced to leave their other children in the care of their eldest son. Yes, initially the authorities acted in the best interests of Ashya, but once the wheels of bureaucracy ground into action, seemingly the last person to be considered is that same little boy. Yes, a European arrest warrant was issued, but once the circumstances came to light surely it could just as easily have been withdrawn? It was an appalling way to treat the whole family, and verging on barbaric the way Ashya was kept from his parents at a traumatic time in his life.

A very waggy tale
HAPPY endings are always good, and this tale is no exception, with a very waggy tail at the end of it. Back in May, a young Alsatian pup, approximately three weeks old, was thrown from a car in Cuevas del Almanzora. Fortunately, Barry Hayes, David Tombling and a neighbour were able to rescue the pup. Manny, as he was later named, was covered in fleas and ticks and very malnourished.
Virgen del Saliente shows new face RESIDENTS of Albox and devotees of the Pequeñica have attended the unveiling of the Virgen del Saliente after her long-awaited restoration. The religious icon has been restored by Joaquin Gilabert in
preparation for the upcoming pilgrimage from Albox to Saliente, a distance of 18 kilometres up the Rambla de Albox into the Saliente monastery. All uphill, this pilgrimage is not only long but also arduous.

Thousands come to see the Pequeñica and join the pilgrimage every year, with this year’s pilgrimage on September 8. It runs from noon till 5pm. It is one of the largest in southeast Spain.
David, who was staying at his holiday home at the time, adopted the dog and emailed a photo to his wife Kathleen in the UK. They decided to give Manny a forever home and arranged for fellow dog lover Dee to foster Manny until he was old enough to travel. Manny moved to Middlesbrough in the UK in August and is now very happy and settled in his new home, thoroughly enjoying half an acre of garden and playing with two other dogs in the family.
Mojacar bag snatchers OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested three people involved in the snatch of a handbag from a 61-yearold woman in Mojacar Playa. Summer traffic figures looking positive LAST weekend was one of the busiest of the year with many people ending their summer holidays and heading back to their homes, jobs and daily grind after a few precious days or weeks away. Domestic holidays are still very popular within Spain, and with motorway networks in Europe making it easier to explore, it is no wonder that Spain has such high traffic levels at this time of year. However, despite the increased traffic over the summer there have been only three deaths caused by traffic accidents during July and August, the lowest number recorded this century so far. Jose Maria Mendez, provincial director of the DGT, said: “We can’t be fully satisfied, because people have died, but the data is encouraging and therefore we know that by working in this way it is possible to decrease the number of fatalities.”
The special arrangements DGT put into place to cover last weekend to mark the final drive of summer finished “practically without incident,” commented Mendez. Almeria suffered just one traffic accident, involving one vehicle and minor injuries. The downward trend is also reflected in a decreased number of accidents, a total of 79 during July and August. This is the second lowest figure in recent years and less than half the number in the year 2000. “Greater responsibility is being seen on the roads, with more drivers being aware of the risks posed by driving. The immediate effect is safer traffic with fewer accidents,” said Mendez. DGT has been incorporating various campaigns to combat unsafe driving. An example of this is the focus on special tests for drugs and alcohol on the roads during July, and a speed control campaign during August.

Spain 4th most gay friendly GALLUP, the International survey company have released the results of the annual Gallup World Poll which surveys over 100,000 people in 123 countries around the world. The poll found that the Netherlands came out on top as the most gay friendly European country where 83 per cent of those polled said it was a “good place” for gays and lesbians to live. Iceland came second in the poll at 82 per cent, just ahead of Spain at 79 per cent and the UK at 77 per cent. Just three in 10 of those surveyed worldwide said their community is “a good place” for gays and lesbians to live. According to data most people in European nations say their
community is a welcoming place for gays and lesbians. The poll also showed many in African countries see their homelands as being hostile to homosexuals. Of the countries or areas where residents are most likely to say their city or area is “not a good place” for gay and lesbian people, nearly all were African nations, where same-sex relationships are still largely taboo. This sentiment is nearly universal in Senegal (98 per cent), Malawi (96 per cent), Gabon (95 per cent), Niger (95 per cent), Mali (95 per cent), and Uganda (95 per cent). Similarly data from countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia showed only 2 per cent of those polled thought their country was a ‘good place’ to live.

Femen attack Ministry of Interior with eggs FOUR members of feminist group Femen pelted the Ministry of the Interior building with eggs to demand justice for rape victims in Spain. The activists from the feminist group showed up at the Ministry in Madrid with Violacion = Marca España (Rape = Made in Spain), Stop Violación (Stop rape), No es No (No means no) and Violación no es tradición (Rape is not a tradition) written in black ink on their bare chests and threw eggs at the building chanting ‘A violador castrado, huevos estrellados’ (Smash the eggs of the castrated rapist - a play on words in Spanish between a man’s genitalia and actual eggs ‘huevos’). Even though they were identified by the police, they were not placed under arrest. The group reportedly staged the protest to condemn the decision made by a Malaga judge roughly a week ago to shelve a rape case involving five young men who were accused of raping a 20-year-old woman at the Malaga Fair.

Following the protest, Femen asked the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice to amend the law and give exemplary punishment to rapists. Eight women are raped in Spain every hour, they said.
Killing in Humanes GUARDIA CIVIL officers in Humanes, Madrid, have detained a woman, 51, on suspicion of killing her husband, 50. The incident took place at the home of the
couple and the woman was arrested at the scene. The couple had a long history of fighting each other. A spokesperson for the emergency services commented that they received a call reporting that a man was unconscious and when their operatives arrived they found a man who had died from knife wounds. Police are investigating the case although, they believe, they already have the culprit in custody.

Less parliamentary immunity available
Alberto Ruiz Gallardon: Working on law proposal.
THE Minister for Justice, Alberto Ruiz Gallardon, is working on a law proposal that would bring the number of people in Spain who have parliamentary immunity down from 17,621 to just 22. Gallardon is of the opinion that parliamentary immunity should be restricted to just a few members of the government and the royal family as they have the powers of state.
Should the law be passed then the only people to enjoy this immunity would be the president of the government, the presidents of congress and the senate, the presidents of the constitutional tribunal and the supreme tribunal as well as the 17 presidents of the autonomous communities. “This makes 22 people in total” commented the minister in an interview
with the El Pais newspaper. Gallardon went on to point out that these legal reforms could not be completed by an ordinary legal proposal as the
immunities are written into the constitution and, as such, cannot be modified by a legal reform but rather by a reformation of the constitution itself.
Spain claims €1 billion Gibraltar tax fraud losses THE Spanish Secretary of State for the European Union, Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, has claimed that the Spanish government misses out on close to €1 billion of tax revenues each year due to ‘tax fraud’ in Gibraltar. The Minister made the claim during a wide ranging interview in Spanish daily ABC, within which he made allegations of tobacco smuggling and money laundering against the Rock authorities. The Minister said, “At the beginning of the parliamentary term, the Government reported allegations of tobacco smuggling and money laundering which take place in Gibraltar, to the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). “The findings of their report are a boost to our allegations because it sees grounds for believing that the financial interests of the EU are affected by such crimes. It is clear that huge quantities of tobacco imported by Gibraltar are introduced illegally into Spain.” On the cost to the
Spanish public purse, he said, “The Ministry for Public Finances calculates that the current tax regime in Gibraltar generates losses to the Spanish treasury of close to €1 billion annually, in the form of lower returns on different types of taxation.” He called on the European Commission (EC) to investigate the British Overseas Territory’s tax policies for possible illegal state aid. Gibraltar authorities released a statement, hitting back at the Spanish claims, describing them as “a financial flight of fancy.” The statement said that out of the 15,673 active companies there are only 102 Spanish nationals with a Spanish address holding one or more shares in a total of 66 companies. “This helps to clearly demonstrate that Gibraltar is, unsurprisingly, not seeing significant numbers of Spanish individuals using Gibraltar’s financial services,” it said.

Overflowing wine vats predicted CASTILLA-LA MANCHA is yet again on course to produce too much wine. Once this year’s grape harvest has been processed there will be insufficient room in some districts to store the wine following 2013’s record 53million hectolitre production. Castilla-La Mancha’s wine-makers have historically prized volume over quality and shunned the lower yields preferred by many other regions. As a result, some bodegas cannot find buyers for their entire production. There has been less demand from Spain’s catering industry although family consumption has risen slightly. Prompted by
low bulk prices averaging €0.41 a litre, exports increased to 22 million hectolitres last year with most of the wine destined for Italy, France, Portugal and the UK. A further seven million cubic hectometres was used for grape juice but neither the domestic nor foreign markets have been able to absorb Castilla-La Mancha’s 2013 production. The situation can still be remedied, believes Rafael del Rey who heads Spanish Wine Markets Observatory. If the grapes grown in Castilla-La Manca were paid according to calibre, this would discourage overproduction and encourage quality, not quantity, Del Rey said.

Basically, I need to find a way to get this guy to conclude our dealings in a satisfactory manner and to return surplus monies. So, how can I do this? P.B. You can go directly to the ‘Colegio de Abogados,’ which is the Spanish version of the Law Society, with your complaint. Or you can instruct another solicitor. I recommend this second option. Do not be concerned that one lawyer will not go against another. First you need a new lawyer in any case. Second, you are far more likely to retrieve your papers and any money owed to you quickly. BUSINESS owners pay much attention to the running of their business. The poor relation on the ‘Must Do’ tick box is often customer care. I was reminded of this when my wife and I were met by ice cold officiousness from a booking clerk as we explained our needs. She had her inner demons. We were, I suppose, in her cross-hairs that day. The staff member’s offhand attitude spoiled for us, and no doubt others, what is known as the customer experience. Of the many business maxims collected one of my favourites is: “If we get it right tell the world. If we get it wrong tell us.” Good business advice but it can be a tough call. It is often easier to avoid unpleasantness and take your business elsewhere. However, it costs seven times as much to attract a new client as to keep an existing one.
As a business owner it pays to strike up a good relationship with customers. It pays extra dividends if you encourage them to help your business by remarking candidly on their customer experience and then putting flaws right. Here are a few facts that focus on the importance of treating the boss (the customer) with friendliness and civility. According to 1st Financial Training Services 96 per cent of customers don’t complain when disappointed by poor service; 91 per cent simply never return. A dissatisfied customer will tell nine to 20 people of their bad experience. Happy clients, according to the White House Office of Consumer Affairs, will express their satisfaction to just four to six people. Marketing sources agree that 70 per cent of buying experiences are based on the customer’s perception of how they were treated. Believe it or not price is secondary. Customers who rate your business five on a nought to five scale are six times more likely to return than a customer who marks you four to five. If your business is quiet whilst rivals are busier, then lack of customer care could be the reason.

Keep guns off the streets of Britain… I HAD seen this coming, as we can always count on Leapy Lee to rant on about dramatic events without ever offering any solution that could work. This time he has excelled himself. Hasn’t he seen the footage of the armed police presence in Ferguson, Missouri? Is that what he wants Britain to be like? A country with armed police or soldiers on every corner is not a free country, and I thought naively that a free country is what Leapy wants. Nobody should ignore the threat from Islamic extremists but dealing with them is the job of our intelligence services, and preventing radicalisation is everyone’s job. Stop demonising Muslims, get them involved in all levels of society. Leapy’s recipe would certainly increase the number of Muslims who despair of being truly accepted in Britain. It’s fortunate that his recipe has absolutely no chance of being adopted by the government, but his loose talk has quite enough bad effects. Please Leapy, we love you really, but don’t rant, don’t generalise, just think! Language hurdle I BOUGHT a washing machine in September 2011 for €229 and paid on the advice of the saleslady a further €40 to extend the warranty to 2014. The machine failed totally in July 2014 and I requested a full refund but was told to contact the store’s insurance company. The assistance I received was totally unhelpful and a telephone number I was given has been useless as I am always informed that no English-speaking person was available. At least six emails have been to no avail and the store itself is completely unhelpful. Flour remedy A FEW days ago I reached out for my hot iron without looking, missed the handle and grabbed the base. The pain was immense. I rushed to the pantry and thrust my hand into a bag of flour, squeezing my burnt fingers as advised in your newspaper. After a few moments all was tenderness and, as your correspondent stated, no blisters, no red marks, no pain! YOUR photo of rubbish at Cabo Roig is only the tip of the iceberg. To cross from one side of the strip to the other necessitates either wading through rubbish in the underpass or trying to avoid bottles, litter and worse on the foot bridge. The real thing I MUST respond to Flora Simmons’ letter No Bargain which appeared in response to my letter in the previous edition. My comments regarding people buying fake polo shirts from the Looky-Looky men was written from their point of view i.e. the shirts are perfect to them at around €15 rather than an extortionate €85. As for my not knowing the difference between the fakes and the real thing, quite right: I don’t own either. LL this PC and racist rubbish really has to stop. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it’s highly likely it could actually be a duck. If you’ve got frizzy hair a broad nose and thick lips you are probably of African descent. If you have slanted eyes and a round face, you could well have connections with China, Japan or certain other Asian origins. If you are white with a narrow nose and round eyes you are likely to be from Europe or some western civilization. These dammed PC and racist ranters have actually managed to get millions of us denying our very existence. All of us are exactly the same on the inside; we have just evolved differently on the out, generally because of the wide assortment of environments that exist on this planet of ours. Spain is now much more open-minded. I personally have never felt mistreated or been in a situation where I have felt inequality against women,” she remarked. But Matt Shatford of Weekend Sport, Vera Playa, said: “Yes, I think Spain is behind the times sometimes with regards to equality but that tends to be the older men who are stuck in their ways. The younger groups are completely the other way and much more respectful of women and equality so I think things are definitely improving.” And Lynda ‘Loulou’ Barnes, of Loulou’s Hair Design in Velez Rubio, said:

Yes, we’ve been bombarded on all sides by images of scantily dressed women and unrealistically smiling family groups trying to turn current concerns - the recession, the UK’s late-summer blustery weather, mother-in-law’s annual visit - into sun-drenched bliss. But hey, now there’s an alternative if you’re looking for a late summer break and a bit of travel one-upmanship! And just think of all those ‘triffic’ photos you’ll be able to upload on your return on Facebook!
While Foreign Office advice puts Crimean War battleground tours off-limits to ordinary travellers, optimistic firms are already offering tourists in Ukraine the chance to visit the modern-day war zones. Adverts for trips have appeared in areas frequented by tourists, containing phrases like “Impress your friends with the ultimate selfies” and “see where the fighting’s actually taking place.” Unbelievable! Or how about a trip to Afghanistan, Iraq or Algeria? All available to visit by intrepid tourists courtesy of gung-ho tour companies, though finding adequate travel insurance might be a problem and bullet-proof vests definitely recommended. Alternatively, you could check out charming Chernobyl (tours offered inside the 30-mile exclusion zone around the site, avoiding still-dangerous areas). But hang on! For the livelier, Guadix, just up the road toward Granada, has lots of cave buildings to view and you will be more than welcomed. It has a full basilica, archbishop, and was the home of many a famed writer and musician.
The ‘secret road challenge’ is also herein issued. Just past Guadix is Purellena, then to La Peza (where they hold the fiestas de toros without any walls separating you from the bulls) and on to Granada. You will come out right in Generalife, but on the way you will presume you are looking at Nordic fjords with their
deep, ice blue colour. Cheat and take the ice bucket challenge right there or stop and catch a few trout. Going the other way, northwest, the cave town of Galera is another must spot to get to know. Good local wine and friendly people. Nearby is Orce, where the bones of an 800,000-year-old man have been unearthed. A small but neat castle also awaits. You can get there by going to Velez Blanco, Velez Rubio, Maria and on to Orce. You can climb up to the Cueva de los Letreros where the Indalo man is said to hail from. Driving almost straight north will take you to Murcia, a city well worth visiting just for its culinary pleasures. Tax Reforms Affecting Rental Income The Spanish government has proposed fiscal reforms which could affect the rental market. Note that these are being debated by parliament, and may change before being approved or may not pass into law at all. The proposals are that, with effect from 1st January 2015: • The tax reduction which was previously available for purchasing a new build will be removed. • The VAT rate on new builds will be raised from 4% to 10%. • The tax exemption available to landlords to be reduced. Where the tenant is aged over 30, the exemption would reduce from 60% to 50%, where the tenant is under 30, to reduce from 100% to 50%. However, this proposal has not made it into the draft laws to be placed before parliament. • Inflation relief for properties purchased before 1994 will be eliminated.
By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks There were rumours that the main home, second home and others would be taxed on the basis that they were deemed to be turning over rental income even if they were not. It seems, however, that this measure will not be put into place after all. It was proposed in the Spanish tax law reform that the main home exemption from capital gains tax will be withdrawn, but the draft law
based on this does not include this measure. There is an interesting new proposal in the reform to be laid before parliament that all taxpayers over age 65 will not be liable to capital gains tax on any assets, provided they use the proceeds to purchase an annuity to supplement pension income. The potential changes affect the tax paid on rental income and the capital gains tax due on properties purchased before 1994 if sold after 1st January 2015. If you are resident in Spain and considering selling UK property which you have owned for many years, you have a window of opportunity to save tax. You could take advantage of the current lack of UK taxation for non-UK residents (this changes from April 2015), plus the availability of the Spanish reliefs for length of ownership, to maximise your gains at a minimum of tax if you sell before January
2015. If you are looking to sell a longterm Spanish property, consider doing so before January 2015. Spanish residents over the age of 65 who are considering selling assets and would like to invest in some form of annuity may wish to wait until the new laws come into force. If selling a UK property, you may wish to sell between 1st January and 5th April 2015 to avoid tax on the gain. Anyone who owns and rents out UK property and pays no UK tax on their rental income because of the UK personal tax allowance, and little tax in Spain because of the 60% exemption, may wish to reconsider their positions. As the UK government is proposing to remove the personal allowance for non-residents (unless they have strong economic connections to the UK), this may result in a higher UK income tax liability. Now could be an opportune time to sell a property
to minimise capital gains tax. Those looking to purchase a property would be better off entering into the contract before the end of 2014. Remember that you need to consider the interaction between Spanish and UK tax to determine what your tax liability would be and what would be the best course of action for you. EastEnders to feature Linda Carter rape storyline in the autumn EASTENDERS will air a rape storyline involving Linda Carter later this year. Show bosses are working with Rape Crisis on a storyline that will see Linda (Kellie Bright) victimised by her brother-in-law Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo). Bright has said that she is hopeful that Linda’s journey will change viewers’ perception of rape. “I feel honoured to be given the responsibility to highlight the issue and educate against many myths surrounding rape,” Bright explained. “The statistics are shocking. I hope EastEnders will help change people’s perceptions.” Her co-star Di Angelo went on to say: “This is an extremely challenging storyline to play but an incredibly important story to tell.” Rape Crisis’s Fiona Elvines also suggested that dramatic portrayals such as the Linda Carter storyline have the power to “change the public narrative
around rape which heavily blames survivors.” Elvines explained: “The team at EastEnders, from producers and researchers, to writers and actors, have demonstrated a commitment to getting the balance right, working closely with us to create a story that tells some of the truths of sexual violence. “We hope this commitment shows through and that anyone watching the show who feels they want to talk about their own experiences feels able to call the National Rape Crisis Helpline.” EastEnders producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins stressed that the storyline is another example of the show telling “important human stories that have the potential to make a real difference to people’s lives.” He added: “Kellie Bright and Matt Di Angelo both give such brave, raw and intelligent performances as this story rips into the heart of the Carter

Spanish planes that hit the big screen in the ‘Battle of Britain’ By David Kavanagh THE Euro Weekly News reported that five former Spanish fighter planes were being sold from a warehouse in Texas, USA and said they were never used by the Spanish or German Air Forces, but were used as Hollywood props. This is not quite correct. The five aircraft are Hispano Aviación HA-1112 which was a Spanish licensed-built version of the famous German Messerschmitt Me 109 of World War Two. The Germans having supplied Franco with aircraft during the Civil War, the Spanish continued to build these themselves both during and after World War Two. After the war the Spanish were unable to obtain further German engines so fitted Rolls Royce Merlin engines purchased from the UK to fit to their licence-built Me 109

It is still painted in the Luftwaffe markings it wore for the 1969 film Battle of Britain to represent a German Messerschmitt Me 109. airframes. This became the Hispano HA-1112, known as the Buchón. the Rolls Royce Merlin engine that powered the Spitfires and Hurricanes that fought the
German Me 109s over England in 1940 during the Battle of Britain.
The Spanish Air Force, Ejército del Aire, continued to operate the Hispano HA-1112, including the five aircraft now for sale in USA, until 1968. These five aircraft, and approximately 20 more were purchased from the Spanish Government by the makers of the 1969 film ‘Battle of Britain,’ United Artists, and flown to the UK for the flying sequences of the film. The aircraft playing the part of German Messerschmitt Me 109s. At the end of the filming these five were purchased by a Texan pilot who had flown them in the film. He stored them in a warehouse in Texas for 45 years and they are now for sale for at least €600,000. A number of restored Hispano HA-1112 Buchóns continue to fly in Europe, mostly painted to represent German Me 109s.

HEN the Malayan airliner MH17 carrying 298 passengers was destroyed, there was comfort from knowing that the flight recorders would be analysed in the incorruptible West. In light of subsequent Dutch refusal to release the flight recorder’s data and shillyshally over release of support data held by Kiev and the United States, the flight recorders might just as well have been sent to North Korea. Happily, flight recorders provide only a jigsaw piece in such tragedies. Almost certainly the US-installed Ukrainian puppet regime was responsible and the US and EU are complicit in this awful crime. With the war going badly Kiev desperately needed a reason to demonise Russia to justify a NATO response. If blame for the MH17 calamity could be pinned on Russia then both prayers would be answered. False Flag operations are acts of

war carried out by covert forces to justify conflict. America and Britain have a long and disgraceful history of arranging such operations. The sinking of the Maine, a US battleship in 1898 was never a Spanish provocation. The on-board explosion was an act of sabotage. The subsequent US conspired war soon relieved Spain of Guam, the Philippines and Cuba.
The Gulf of Tonkin incident, in which American warships were ‘attacked’ by the Vietnamese, was later revealed to be a US inspired operation. The bogus outrage brought about the highly profitable Vietnam War. The passenger liner Lusitania was torpedoed in 1915 after the US consul was sneakily informed that arms valued at £6 million had been illicitly loaded. This removed the ship’s neutral status. The subsequent loss of 1,200 passengers
including 128 American citizens, brought the US into the profitable World War One. In September 1939 British liner Athenia was torpedoed with similar loss of British and US life. This inspired ruse to bring the US into the war failed to get the backing of the American people. Opportunity for America to join in the spoils of war was delayed. The later Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour was instigated by US Naval Intelligence. Drawing up an eight point plan to sanction Japan into oblivion, the Japanese responded by fighting their way out of the US trade embargo corner. Due to its defensive alliance, Germany was obliged to side with Japan. Their doing so conveniently brought the US into World War Two. Wars are profitable: The US spent $2 trillion (€1.51 trillion) on the Iraq War, 90 per cent of which profits went to 1 per cent of the US population, mostly located in Congress, the Senate and America’s elite. Senators who voted to attack Syria received 83 per cent more campaign money from military contractors than did those lawmakers voting no. Sadly, the downed Malayan airliner is merely the latest in a long list of False Flag operations.

The truth is there are countless myths about shampooing, ranging from washing every day can be bad for your hair to shampooing being unnecessary as your hair will naturally begin to clean itself with time. Plants that create natural aromatherapy effects include aromatic herbs such as lavender, sage, rosemary, thyme, lemon verbena, perfumed roses, citrus trees, pine trees and eucalyptus. The figure of 400 grammes of oxygen a day is for a moderate level of
physical activity. Heavy pruning and sawing during the winter cutback, the digging of planting holes, the preparing of the soil for the planting of vegetables, the digging planting holes for trees or a strenuous walk in the mountains with major climbs can significantly increase one’s ingestion of oxygen to half a kilo or more a day. Even on a balanced diet, with 50 per cent or more of ecologically grown and processed fruits and vegetables of raw live energy, the proportion of oxygen in the diet is significant. I suspect that this is something that most of us rarely think about whether enthusiastic or reluctant gardeners. So do preserve and improve the quality of the air in your gardens not just with plants but also by minimising spraying with insecticides and fungicides and when you have to use them use only ecological ones. Spain on a plate: Almeria THE gastronomy in the province of Almeria, Andalucia, is, as well as their own original dishes, a mixture of influences from the Granada Alpujarra region and the Murcia kitchen. One of the most popular dishes which is also served as a tapa in the bars is Jibia en salsa (cuttlefish in sauce). The cuttlefish is usually either boiled or grilled lightly and the sauce is made with a strong saffron influence and the juices from the fish – simple but very tasty. It is usually garnished with vegetables which have been boiled in the sauce to make them tastier. Caballa con pimientos (mackerel with peppers) is another typical dish of the area and, as the name suggests, it consists of lightly grilled mackerel, just seasoned with salt, and roasted peppers with a very light yet full flavoured wine reduction sauce. This is sausages fried in olive oil and when they are nearly done onions and other vegetables are thrown in to absorb the flavour of the meat juices coming off the sausages and topped off with a healthy dash of wine reduce and serve. Just remember to start off with good quality sausages.

Kitchen hacks to make life much easier THERE are several short cuts that can make life in the kitchen so much easier to deal with and they don’t even require very much effort. Here are some of the most useful. Peel a few large pieces of fresh ginger and break them into one inch square cubes then just place them in the freezer and take out as required. They can be grated from frozen to cut down on the amount of juice that they usually lose. Keep onions and garlic fresh by placing them in opaque paper bags with plenty of air holes punched in. If kept in plastic bags they will go mouldy within weeks - the
punched holes in the paper bags allow air to circulate and keep them fresh for months. To prevent an open avocado from going brown either keep the stone in it or pour a capful of wine vinegar over the cut surface of the avocado this reduces oxidation which is what makes it go brown. Get perfectly shredded chicken without a fuss or scorched fingers by putting it in the food mixer - just remember to use the paddle attach-ment and not the cutting knives. After making mayonnaise, save leftover egg whites by pouring them into ice cube trays to be used at a later date.

Albox pilgrimage an annual visit to Virgen del Saliente EVERY year thousands of people walk 18 kilometres uphill from Albox town centre to the monastery at Saliente. This year, the saint honoured in the pilgrimages, Virgen del Saliente, has had a new lick of paint, and will be glowing as she is taken on her journey. The people who walk the pilgrimage are extremely varied, with whole families escorting the younger members alongside the elderly. For many in Albox, the pilgrimage still has religious significance while others simply yearn to soak up the traditional atmosphere.

Railway exhibition in Albox
ALBOX is the latest and final destination for the travelling railway exhibition. It runs until Saturday in the old Banco Popular in Plaza Nueva. The exhibition which explores the history of the Great Southern Railway of Spain has been doing a tour of the province and has already appeared in various towns and villages along the old Almanzora route. The exhibition includes photographs and information that any train buff will love but will also appeal to history lovers. The exhibition is open for just a couple of days more. Today and tomorrow (Thursday and Friday) from 7pm until 9pm and on Saturday September 6 from 11am until 1pm. The exhibition is provided with the cooperation of Diputacion de Almeria, Asociacion Cultural Somos Albojenses and Ayuntamiento Albox.

HERE David gives some more advice on agility training for dogs. THE first contact obstacle will be the Scale or ‘A’ Frame and is best for the beginner dog, although many handlers will not believe this when they see the height is two metres. It is wide and a lot more formidable than a dog walk plank, which is also excellent for training beginner dogs. There will also be low jumps and a tunnel which dogs seem to love. Control training is needed to get from one obstacle to another and as the young dogs progress we start to teach different commands to turn the

You and your dog can have fun with agility if it is timed correctly and provided you and your dog are ready to progress. In my opinion it is important to remember that a dog that is happy and enjoying himself, is much more likely to try hard to please his owner, than one who is afraid he is going to get told off for a mistake. Spanish construction sector leads bankruptcies

Good scoring at Marina THERE was good scoring at Marina Phoenix on Monday, despite the recently top dressed greens. Tony Cordingley came out on top with an impressive 42 points. A tie for second went to Jim Budd (37) on countback from Ali Mahmud (37), in third. The Ladies Division was won by Rhoda Elwick (35) from Isobel Jones and Margaret Budd. There were two’s prizes for Margaret Budd, Ali Mahmud and Jim Budd and Brian Couper, on the par four 13th. Thursday’s team game was a fourball waltz: with a par score of 72 all seven teams beat par, but the team dancing to victory with 85 points were Geoff Smith, Marcos Caparros, Nigel Greenwood and Jim Budd. Second on 82 were Isobel Jones, Roy Barker, Antonio Ubeda and Brian Mayhew. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Les Armfield and Jim Budd. THE 19th Hole GS played an individual Stableford Competition at Aguilon. With temperatures already in the mid 20s and humidity off the scale it really was going to be a day of hanging in and hoping the scores came good. A steady round by Mark Danson which included two no scores and
an Eagle secured him first place with 35 points from an inspired Nick Pogson on 34 points. Nick scored an impressive 21 points on the back nine which included a pair of birdies, enough to keep an ever improving Mike Palmer in third place on 32 points. The 19th Hole G/S are now arranging weekly games at various courses in the area, our home course, which we will play fortnightly, is Aguilon. Easy going for ladies WHEN Forum Golf Society played a Double Par Medal at Marina on August 29 it turned out to be an excellent day for our lady members, who claimed three of the top four places. Myra Dickson was the day’s winner from Louise Douglas on countback after both returned net 68s, with previous event winner Keith Ryder in third with a 69. Fran Elam (fourth), Maurice Jamieson (fifth) and Phil Harris (sixth) all scored level par 71s, with Terry Davies, still complaining about a minor recent handicap cut seventh with 72. The event was also the fourth qualifier for the 2014/15 Ford Golf Leagues, and although it’s very early days the top four currently are Peter Harrington, Fran Elam, Pat Garrigan and Maurice Jamieson. With just four qualifying events to play the race to win Forum’s Claret Jug league is hotting up.
