False alarm activates Alicante Ebola protocols
A YOUNG Nigerian man who was admitted to Alicante’s San Juan Hospital suspected of suffering from the deadly Ebola virus has been given the all-clear. He was being cared for in an isolation unit after showing signs of the virus including high fever, physical discomfort, vomiting and bleeding, but doctors now believe he may just be suffering from a throat infection. The man was admitted to a general hospital and allegedly kept waiting for six hours before being transferred to San Juan when his symptoms were recognised as being similar to those of Ebola victims.

The decision to raise the alarm and start isolation protocols was taken when it became clear that the patient had travelled through an Ebola-affected zone within the last month. Earlier this month San Juan was assigned by the
national government to treat Ebola cases in Alicante Province. Samples taken from the young man were sent to the Spanish National Microbiology Centre near Madrid for analysis, and have come back as
negative. There will be no further testing as it cannot be proved that the patient has come into contact with anyone infected with the virus. This is the second time in the last few months that a quarantine protocol has come into effect in the Valencia Region for a possible case of the Ebola virus. On June 23 a Guinean national was placed in isolation after arriving on a flight from Morocco and displaying symptoms similar to the virus, but this case also proved to be negative. The Nigerian man remains in hospital under observation.

Fortunately the fire was spotted before it had time to spread and only one hectare of woodland in the
Bixquert area was affected. Aircraft scooped up water from a huge pool nearby and the blaze was soon controlled. The Bixquert fire was one of three put out in Xativa on the same day, initially leading investigators to suspect arson. But closer inspection revealed that all were the result of negligence.

SALINAS: Too salty for the grey mullet.
Calpe Salinas are now too salty after drought CALPE’S salt beds are too salty thanks to one of the worst droughts ever recorded. Hundreds of fish have died despite 1,800 cubic metres of seawater pumped into the Salinas each day since last April. This has not averted high evaporation levels that deprive fish of the oxygen they need to survive, although the resulting salinity has prevented the green algae that often cover the salt beds in the summer. The present conditions are decimating the grey mullet that populate the Salinas although eels and sea bass are less affected.
An Alicante University study did not detect fish in the Salinas 15 years ago although they now enter from the sea as hatchlings and, without natural predators, reproduce freely. The town hall asked visitors and residents not to dramatise the situation with photos of dead fish and alarmist commentaries in the social media. Fish always die in the Salinas when high temperatures combine with drought, the town hall’s Environment department pointed out.

of money and this will be resolved once the national government releases funds to finish the bypass begun in 2008. Work was halted in 2009 when the contractors went bankrupt. Altea’s problem is more complex, as all residents agree that a ring-road is a necessity but no-one is willing to cede valuable land to build it.

Euro Weekly News (EWN) proved that ‘It Gets It’ when our staff caught up with her to take exclusive pictures after she jetted in to be DJ at plush celebrity haunt Olivia Valere. She was playing her Broken Hearts set at the Marbella nightclub which was packed with socialites and special guests for the much anticipated show. She told EWN: “I love Marbella because it is so fun and classy. I’ve had to turn down great offers
around the world because I’m so solidly booked. I would love to stay for a week and really relax and enjoy it but I have so much to do.” Asked why she chose to become a DJ she said that when she does get days off work, there’s nothing she loves more than to chill out in her studio at home, with her dogs, writing songs and singing. She loves to see the crowd dance, smile and scream. Olivia Valere described Paris as “a very kind, sweet person” and this certainly seemed the case when she called a young man out of the crowd to have his picture taken with her, saying: “Wait a minute… I want to take a picture for this guy because he is so lovely.” Jose Castillo, 25, a self-confessed mega-fan, had travelled from Cordoba and queued for two hours, just to catch a glimpse of his idol.

Loud and clear on Benidorm front BENIDORM tourists and residents have complained in the past about communications’ saturation at peak periods With the collaboration of the town hall, telecommunications’ company Telefonica is remedying this with ‘small cells’ along Benidorm’s beaches. The resort is the first Spanish municipality to receive this innovation which increases the maximum speed of the 4G mobile network where data exchange demand is high. Benidorm was chosen for the pilot scheme on the strength of the 5.3 million tourists it expects to receive this year, many of whom want a reliable smartphone connection. Sixteen antennas have been attached to lampposts, traffic lights, phone boxes and bus-stops on the Levante and

Following numerous complaints from nearby residents, the town hall intervened at the end of July, asking the disco management to adjust the outside sound system to legal levels. Not only did they fail to comply but tried to prevent town hall
employees from entering when they returned to cordon off the outdoor section. Despite having its licence revoked for 10 days and told to pay a €700 fine, the disco opened to the public that same evening. The ban has now been extended to 30 days and the fine will be increased accordingly, the town hall said.

Red flag for danger RED flags on a Spanish beach tell bathers to keep out of the water. Many take no notice but ignore it at their peril, as happened recently when a strong Levanter was blowing. It might have brought temperatures down after an earlier roasting from the Poniente wind, but Beach Rescue ruled out a 25m-strip of Alicante
City’s Postiguet beach adjoining the rocks beside the Hotel Melia. “There is a tremendous undertow there,” explained Beach Rescue coordinator Miguel Angel Morales. Eight people were rescued from the sea by lifeguards while another three needed assistance after getting into difficulties.
New tomato named after La Nucia GERMAN biologist Dr Arno Kahne has produced a new variety of cherry tomato named ‘La Nucia.’ The plants can each produce 200 tomatoes and seeds have been sent to chemicals multinational BASF in Ludwichshafen (Germany) for testing. La Nucia’s mayor, Bernabe Cano and Foreign Residents’ councillor Bart Gommans accompanied Monika Welchering, director of the Montebello Residence, to visit Dr Kahn’s allotment. Babysitter didn’t sit A VALENCIA woman was arrested for leaving a baby unattended for three hours. The two-month-old baby was left with her while his parents, both aged 20, went to the local food bank. She is their landlady and has looked after the baby before, she explained. When they failed to return, she left without locking the door. Neighbours alerted the police after hearing the baby crying for hours.

Festival refunds fail to appear PEOPLE who bought tickets for the cancelled Electrobeach festival in Benidorm are still waiting for their money back. The two-day festival of electronic dance music was scheduled for August but called off following failure to settle on a venue acceptable to residents, the town hall and the promoters.
More than 3,000 ticketholders received an email on June 15 announcing a refund within seven days but are still waiting two months later. Nuria, a Madrileña, spent €400 on entrance tickets and accommodation for herself and her partner. Nobody answers her emails and there is no way of contacting the organisers whose internet site and Facebook page have both disappeared, she claimed. Benidorm Town Hall is also receiving complaints but is unable to help. “Electrobeach is a private project and all responsibility falls to promoters,” said Events councillor Conrado Hernandez.
6 black flags for Volunteers needed beaches
ISVH: More volunteer firemen needed
AS reported previously, Javea’s Balcon al Mar volunteer firemen have a new chief, experienced fireman Soren Meilick. A number of members trained and experienced in fire-fighting have left the Balcon al Mar brigade in recent months, explained the the ISVH neighbourhood association which
organises the brigade. This coincided with the departure of the former chief and ISVH now hopes to incorporate and train new volunteers to return the unit to optimum level. All those interested in joining should visit the ISVH centre or consult their Facebook page, said Soren Meilick.
ENVIRONMENTALIST group Ecologistas en Accion recently published their annual report on the Valencian Community coast. The organisation ‘awarded’ 30 black flags to the region’s beaches where, they claim, analysis of the seawater found amounts of organic waste above legallypermitted limits. Six Ecologistas’ black flags went to Alicante beaches: Molins and Raset in Denia, Postiguet in Alicante, Arenales del Sol in Elche as well as Roquetas and Vivers in Guardamar. There was also a black flag for the nowpostponed Castor scheme to store gas in a disused oil well off Vinaroz (Castellon) and another for the modified Coastal Law. On a more positive note Tabarca, located midway between Alicante City and Santa Pola, received a green flag after rubble and debris were removed from the island.

Wheat-growing past discovered TWENTY-FIVE archaeology students on field studies have finished the seventh summer dig at Albir’s Roman villa. They were from universities in Alicante, Valencia, Granada and the Basque region and assisted excavations at the villa for two weeks this month. They were preceded last month by volunteers from Armenia, Italia, Czech Republic, Russia, Serbia and Turkey as well as Spain. One of the most important discoveries this summer was part of a construction where wheat had been ground, said Alfaz del Pi’s municipal archaeologist Carolina Frias. This confirmed cereal was

Coastal tourism wins over inland sector THE coast is full of summer tourists of all nationalities but the story is different inland. Occupation hovers at around 40 per cent for Alicante Province’s rural hotels and rented accommodation despite pegged prices and special offers. Most reservations are made at the last minute and clients stay for days, rather than weeks as in the past. Easter, Christmas and offseason national holidays that stretch into long weekends are the best times for inland tourism, a sector source admitted. “But 40 per cent occupancy in August is mediocre and we have yet to notice the improving economy,” he added.

THERE have been more arrests in an ongoing case in which police uncovered a money laundering web using training schemes as a cover to get substantial grants from the government. There were no courses and no students. The police investigation into the alleged fraud concluded that the 10,671 students they interviewed had not been on the training courses they had been signed up for. Police interviewed a random selection of hundreds of students, signed up for three different courses with Ucotrans transport company in Madrid, without finding even one who had actually done the course or even signed up for a course. Alfonso Tezanos and Victor Porta, both from Madrid, and Jose Luis Aneri, from Cordoba, are all in prison provisionally for alleged fraud. Aneri is the administrator of Sinergia which is the company principally responsible for acquiring the funds from Madrid. Tezanos was with the Chamber of Commerce in Madrid and was also a partner in companies offering allegedly false courses. It is estimated that a total of €4.5 million was obtained illegally from state funds and

The world’s strongest man event for Moraira MORAIRA is to host an event for the world’s strongest men in a two day extravaganza on September 20 and 21. The two day event, organised by Marina Alta Sports in conjunction with Moraira Gym, is fully backed and licensed by Teulada Town Hall. They have permission to run both a day event, but also put on an open music event on the evening of Saturday September 20 at the venue until midnight. Ten events will be hosted in total with five on each day. The Strongmen participating will be competing for the Marina Alta Strongman Trophy along with prize money and sponsored merchandise. The event will be covered internationally via Men’s Fitness Magazine and Ultimate Guide, along with a host of local press and radio. Tents are being made available for businesses to sell their products or
promote services over the two day event, as well as the youngsters being entertained in a play area. The event should attract more than 20,000 people over the two days, has free entry and is aimed at both holidaymakers and local residents. Primarily this is a charity event. All sponsorship money and funds raised on the day will be going to the Marina Alta Sports charity, that supports local schools to buy sporting equipment, grants and funding for the children in the Marina Alta area. The competition has already attracted interest from international Strongmen to visit Moraira and compete in the contests. Marina Alta Sports are seeking sponsors to help support a worthy cause and assist with the costs of the programme. Five killed in Castellon crash FIVE young men have been killed in a serious accident on the N-340, as it passes through the town of Alcala de Xivert. The collision between an articulated truck and a Peugeot 406 killed the five young car occupants instantly on a curved section of road that is notorious for being dangerous. The deceased men were Senegalese and aged between 30 and 36. According to traffic police, the deceased men were travelling to Benicassim where they lived. Three were not wearing seatbelts. A spokesman from the Directorate General of
Traffic (DGT) said the department has hypothesized that the driver may have fallen asleep as there were no skid marks on the road. The car had swerved onto the opposite side of the road, right into the path of the oncoming truck. The men were heading home to Vinaros after a day of selling items to tourists in Benicassim. “We have to support our families,” said a friend of the deceased who added that the men were “tired” after a very long day of street vending that had started at dawn. Their bodies were transported to the
Institute of Legal Medicine in Castello for autopsies. The truck driver, a male 48-year-old Spanish national, was uninjured in the collision. He tested negative in a test for drugs and alcohol carried out at the scene by the traffic police. The road remained closed to traffic for three hours. So far, 12 people have been killed on that road this year. This is the second most serious accident in Spain in 2014, after the collision in the Alicante town of Cox on July 22 which killed eight holidaymakers.

Yobs throw rocks at trams TRAM drivers employed by FGV in Valencia have spoken out regarding an increase in rock throwing incidents during the summer on tram line four in the neighbourhood of La Coma. According to the drivers, there has been an increase in stone throwing in the area, causing shattered glass, and terrifying passengers and drivers alike. One driver added: “On August 3 a window was broken by a shotgun pellet.” Independent Railway Union (SIF), has approached FGV formally in writing to provide more informa-
tion about the stoning incidents, and to ask what “actions the company will take to prevent them.” The union says they have so far been met with silence. “The attitude of the company so far has been to ignore the facts, which is putting the safety of both passengers and workers at risk.” SIF have highlighted La Coma as problematic, saying: “There have always been issues with travellers without tickets, and it is without the presence of security guards during a good part of the day but lately there has been an increase in incidents of
security.” FGV commented: “During the summer, yes there has been some stoning of trams in La Coma, with no injuries. But it is a lower number than previous years.” Regarding the suspected shotgun pellet, FGV says that “the shape and size of the hole indicate that it may have been produced by the impact of an object of a similar size to a medium size stone. No element or part element was found inside the tram to confirm its origin, as noted in the police report. These reports are carried out in all cases of this type.”

Happy 93rd birthday Fill! ALBIR hosted a happy celebration last week when author Bernard ‘Fill’ Fillayson turned 93. Fill and a few friends met for an Italian meal at Mastroianni restaurant in Albir, to enjoy good food and, as is always the way with Fill, stimulating conversation. Fill has written a number of books from his first ‘The path is your choice’ to his most recent ‘Turning point.’ In the 1980s, Fill designed and launched what he believes to be the first sticker books. Business was booming when sadly his wife became ill and needed a major operation. Her doctor suggested a new life in a warmer climate, so they packed their bags and moved to the Costa Blanca. Fill now lives at Mare Nostrum, Alfaz el Pi, where he is well loved and a constant source of entertainment. Claire Garcia, from Mare Nostrum gushed: “Fill is so animated and cares so much about others. He loves to pop into town and see everyone. He is very animated and popular while always thinking of others.” When asked how old he felt inside now

Spain calls for tougher stance on illegal immigration SPAIN urged Brussels to take a tougher stance on illegal immigration. Spanish President Mariano Rajoy called for a clear and effective European Union policy on illegal immigration while emphasising the difficult situation his government has faced in recent days following massive attempts by subSaharan immigrants to illegally enter Spanish soil. In an effort to stop sub-Saharan immigrants from storming the MelillaMorocco border, Moroccan authorities made plans in May to install a five-metre high wall topped with razor wire along its border with Spain. However, human rights organisations denounced the plans saying Morocco had already begun building the barrier without public consultation. The Government of Morocco failed to inform the Parliament and public institutions of their plans to avoid public outrage, said Head of Rif Association for Human Rights Chakib al Khayari.

Barcelona close cannabis clubs BARCELONA is to close 50 cannabis clubs. Catalan authorities in Barcelona are worried about the city’s reputation as a marihuana smokers’ haven and ordered the immediate closure of 50 cannabis clubs after detecting deficiencies in their management. The good news is…
T
HE good news is that Spain would appear to be firmly on the road to recovery. Along with the UK, economic growth rates are amongst the highest in the Western World. A rise in GDP of 0.6 per cent in the first quarter beat all forecasts for Spain and is significantly above the shock 0 per cent and -0.2 per cent figures shown by France and Germany respectively. The UK is steaming ahead with 0.8 per cent growth. But, worryingly for Spain, the UK is in a significantly better position for the simple reason that it controls its own currency. The UK can do whatever it wants to control its monetary policy. Spain on the other hand is tied into the Euro. Thus it has to follow European policy. That has so far been seen to serve the best interests of the two largest European mainland
economies - France and Germany. Overall the Euro has probably been a good thing for Spain, although those who remember the steep price rises when it was first introduced may beg to differ. Let us hope the Spanish recovery is not hampered by policies designed to protect the two ‘senior’ members of the European club at the cost of the smaller countries.
A sad farewell ROBIN WILLIAMS was a genius of comedy, who will best be remembered for his films like Mrs Doubtfire. A genuinely funny man who kept the world in laughter, he was also a deeply talented actor with a string of hits in serious roles. He will be fondly remembered by most for his jokes, and deeply respected by fellow actors for his talent. May he rest in peace.

More asylum needed HALF of all immigrants who manage to get over the fence in Ceuta and Melilla are refugees, but only 10 per cent of them receive asylum in Spain. According to a report recently released by the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) around half of the immigrants who come over the fences come from war-torn countries and should be given asylum in Spain although only around 10 per cent of them actually receive it. CEAR has presented a campaign to collect 100,000 signatures with which to ask the government to take away the concertinaed barbed wire from the top of the fence and to respect human rights. CEAR explains that refugees “are people
who never expected to have to leave their countries and ask for asylum in order to preserve their lives and physical safety.” Carlos Berzosa, president of CEAR, has claimed that the government is trying to make out that jumping the fence is a recent problem in order to justify its “repressive methods,” when in actual fact this has always happened at that border. He goes on to say that only 5 per cent of illegal immigrants come in through the fences in Ceuta and Melilla - the rest come in through airports, roads and trains. Meanwhile Spanish president, Mariano Rajoy, is asking the UE for more guidelines on what is to be done about the immigrant situation.

Reheated Cold War cools exports of fruit and veg SPANISH exporters are not reassured by the Spanish government’s ‘keep calm’ policy regarding Russian sanctions. The restrictions were Vladimir Putin’s response to earlier sanctions imposed by the West after a passenger aircraft was shot down over Ukraine by pro-Russian fighters. According to Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Spain stands to lose €337 million in lost exports, although the European Commission places this at €338 million. Miguel Blanco president of COAG, coordinator of Spain’s growers and farmers, believes the figure is closer to €1.2 billion. “It’s not only direct exports of around €340 million

Spain exports goods totalling an annual €234 billion, it claimed, and the lost turnover from Russia will amount to
Over-fishing sanctions for Spain and nine others THE European Commission sanctioned Spain for exceeding fishing quotas in 2013. To balance last year’s overfishing the EC has discounted 555 tons from this year’s total allocation. Species include cod, halibut, haddock, sole, lobster and pollack. “If we want to be serious in our fight against over-fishing we need to apply our rules by the book, and that includes respecting quotas,” said Maria Damanaki, EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Not only Spain is affected by the sanctions, but also Denmark, the UK, France, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland and
only 0.14 per cent of the total. Limited or not, Agriculture minister Isabel Garcia Tejerina has asked Brussels to take urgent measures to ensure that the market is not flooded with unsold produce destined for Russia. Andalucia and the Valencian Community, which export fruit and vegetables year-round to Russia, expect to feel the greatest impact. Cataluña will also be affected, principally through seasonal exports of peaches, nectarines and plums. The winner here is Latin America which has happily and hastily stepped into the breach left by EU exporters, to the displeasure of Brussels. They have been asked to reconsider their newly-signed contracts.
Portugal. In those cases where sanctioned countries have already landed their quotas for this year, the EC will reduce the allocation for another stock in the same geographical area. Despite overfishing by these countries, sanctions fell by 22 per cent compared with last year. Overall, they had done “a good job” in easing the pressure on Europe’s overfished waters, Damanaki said. The EC estimates that three-quarters of European stocks are at risk and in May 2013, EU members agreed to end decades of depletion in order to boost diminishing stocks by up to 15 million tons by 2020.
EUREKA! There is no off season in the UK DESPITE it being the peak of the high season trade was quiet. The restaurant’s owners were shoulder-shrugging philosophical about it. Hardly alone, hundreds of similar eateries and related businesses are in a similar situation. Sure their counterparts scattered along the busy frontline esplanades are busier. However, all things being relative, their higher costs will equal things out over the course of the year. If there are empty tables in mid-August tourist hotspots what chance for the rest of the year? I passionately believe Costa barrestaurant turnover could easily be multiplied many times over. the new manager who says, ‘I am going to change everything here.’ Let’s go to England to see if we can find the answers there. Duh! Is that sensible? England and for that matter, Dublin in Ireland and Riga in Latvia are high priced, cool and often rainy. Yet, disconcertingly these cities, which do compete with Spain for tourism, don’t seem to have an off season. Whenever I visit, whatever the weather, the bars and restaurants are busy. In Bristol and Liverpool it is still
necessary to book a restaurant table, be prepared to wait or be turned away. I will tell you what it is; they offer real variety. I swear there is a bigger and much more varied choice of restaurants in a moderately sized English city than there is along the entire Mediterranean coast of Spain. Furthermore, the service is far better as is the quality of atmosphere and food. Here, if you have seen any two restaurants you have seen them all. The choice is Blackpool type 1960s era tin-table cafés or Spanish ambience restaurants; take it or leave it. Karaoke musical fare is as tediously unimaginative as the fare on the plate. I cannot think of a single atmospheric exotic ambience wine bar that invites a smart dress code. In England I was spoiled for choice.

Spain’s public debt rockets to €1 trillion SPAIN’S public debt soared to a whopping €1 trillion. According to data released by Banco de España, the Spanish public debt rocketed to just over €1 trillion or 98.4 per cent of GDP. The Government estimates the debt levels could increase before the end of the year to as much as 99.5 per cent of GDP. Spain’s debt has actually tripled since the outbreak of the economic crisis from 36.3 per cent of GDP in 2007 to almost 100 per cent in 2014. Most of the debt was incurred by the Central Government (84.5 per cent of Spain’s gross domestic product), followed by the Autonomous Communities (21.7 per cent of GDP) and the local councils (4 per cent). These levels are some of the highest seen in modern times.

It protects your system from overuse and assures that you do not consume more electricity than you have contracted at any one time. We suppose that the photograph showed that in fact you now have an ICP installed, but never informed the company. And, yes, Endesa has the right to put the surcharge on your bill. nail polish, the option is available to put that €4 into a savings account. What I like about an app like this is it makes it easy to see how we waste money throughout the day and allows for a sense of satisfaction by providing the opportunity to resist temptation and save.
When we control our urge to spend and start to see money building up in a savings account it really does offer a sense of fulfilment and give us ambition to keep saving. Unfortunately this app is currently just available for Nationwide customers in the UK. Perhaps Spanish banks will pick up on the trend shortly, but in the meantime, with a little bit of discipline we could do the same ourselves. While it’s a little more time consuming, we could in theory restrain from buying unnecessary treats throughout the day and then tot up how much we would have potentially spent. Then, simply transfer this money into a savings account via internet banking.
Lefties leftovers to be Inditex main course INDITEX, whose Zara brand made Amancio Ortega the world’s third-richest man, is going online with Lefties. This is Inditex’s low-cost range of Zara models left over from the previous season. It is already present in 100 shops in Spain and Portugal and the group plans to take on H & M and Primark by launching Lefties as a label in its own right, with its own collection and a new image. Unavailable online until now, it makes its internet debut tomorrow, August 22. The company is committed to internet commerce, the current Inditex chairman Pablo Isla declared recently. This is an important part of its multi-channel strategy of coordinating increased retail space with
expanded online sales. The group continues to see huge growth opportunities in different markets, Isla told the last shareholders’ meeting in July. “There are ample prospects of growth in all areas of Europe while the US is very attractive,” Isla said. There are few clues as to Lefties’ current profitability as the group has never supplied separate breakdown of Lefties results, which until now have been included in Zara’s. Nor does Inditex make a habit of revealing its strategies regarding brands or stores to shareholders or the media. Nevertheless the new Lefties strategy began to take shape on August 1 with two new stores on the outskirts of Moscow and a third in the St Petersburg suburbs. Scruffy beards that need a trim infecting society DURING the last five or 10 years we’ve witnessed a contagious fad amongst Spanish men of all ages. They grow beards so dishevelled and multi-coloured that many of these untidy bramble bushes resemble an explosion in a silo. Beginning with many of our not-so-prestigious political leaders, with their whiskers of diverse shades of black, white, grey and brown, we now discover that the epidemic has spread. It infects almost all Spanish males, young or old, the common denominator being that almost none of these recently-converted fadfollowers take the time or effort to trim or care for them. Is it due to simple laziness or sloth? I realise that this gripe of mine (and also my Valencian wife’s) is not one of our major problems in crisis-ridden Spain, but if we look around to observe the males of other Western nations, we readily notice that hardly any of them (young or old, famous or not) wear beards. In the dark AS a long term resident of Artola Alta I see the same circus every year. Most of the time the main street is in total darkness and suddenly when the tourists are here and the IBI is due, the lights miraculously work perfectly. Of course, with no lights in the street the area is a magnet for petty crime and break-ins are so frequent they have become commonplace. The day after the direct debit has gone through your bank account the lights go off. Now is that coincidence or is that perfect ‘Urban Planning?’ Paul R Ballard (by email)

Think again I ASSUME that the article entitled ‘Pensioner saved from mountain’ was written by someone in their twenties. ‘Elderly’ is not a term to use for a person of 62 years of age, its meaning being someone who is approaching old age. Most people in current employment in the UK, who I’m sure do not consider themselves elderly, will have to work until they’re 70 to receive their pensions. Workings out I WILL start by assuming that Leapy Lee classes all people from the Middle East as Arabs. The main numerical system used in all mathematical exercises is based on the Arabic set of numerals, without which mathematics would be unintelligible and unuseable. The previous most used numeral system was the Roman system in which mathematics is impossible. For example is X 10 or is it the symbol for multiplication? Or simply try to add ii to ii on paper or without converting it to the Arabic numerals to complete the task. Jim (by email)

Oil interests WE have to recognise that the Muslims have had good reasons to despise the West. From the Crusades to the 20th century the Western world has treated them with disdain and contempt even after oil was discovered. Thus the Americans and European powers have interfered time and time again with countries in the Middle East and in North Africa, wanting to install regimes that would be favourable to the West and to its oil interests. It is a pity that the West did not have the self respect to go without the wretched oil from those areas of the world. Sadly, Muslims can also see the decadence of the Western world, with its corruption, permissiveness, greed, immorality and appalling standards of dress. They did have a high civilisation, notably in Moorish Spain, without which the European Renaissance might not have occurred. After that, I agree with Leapy Lee: one cannot think of a single thing which they have produced or invented for the benefit, progress or happiness of mankind in the last 500 years. Yet because of the oil money they can reap the benefits of all the tremendous achievements of the Western world (and Asia). We should get out of all their countries. PJ Owen (by email)
No bargain I’M indifferent to Looky-Looky men and have never paid out for any of their wares, but have to comment on an assertion by last week’s Your Say correspondent, Richard Franklyn. He appears to believe that they charge €15 for ‘perfect’ polo shirts that would otherwise cost €85. These vendors are peddling inferior copies blown together in sweatshops on the other side of the world. Now that the first Modelo 720 (overseas assets reporting) forms have been submitted and processed, people have started hearing from the Spanish tax inspectors. The tax authorities have also recently announced an amnesty for undeclared foreign source pension income. Modelo 720 Form 720 is not a tax form; it is simply a form on which a Spanish resident individual has to report their non-Spanish assets, and also their share of such assets held jointly. However, it was always perceived by many commentators, including Blevins Franks, to be a way for the authorities to catch out people who are not reporting assets on their wealth tax returns. With asset reporting through Modelo 720, the scope for hiding assets and income from the taxman, which is tax evasion, has been very much reduced in Spain. Most of these enquiries from the Spanish tax inspectors appear to be related to discrepancies between the assets an individual has reported on the Modelo 720 and the wealth tax return (or even the absence of a

wealth tax return for the relevant year). However, the tax inspectors have also looked into previous years in some cases. For some people, it has been easy to respond to the inspector. For example, one inspector asked the taxpayer about previous years, only to find out that the individual concerned was not resident in Spain at that time. However, this highlights the
importance of keeping records (including of where you were living and when), and declaring assets accurately and appropriately. Even people who had no wealth taxes to pay in previous years may still have to put up with the inconvenience of the enquiry, not to mention the expenses - potential legal and accountancy fees, translation fees etc. - as well as the time involved. For those who are caught out not declaring assets, there can be unpaid tax, penalties and interest due, not to mention tax on income generated by the undeclared assets (and penalties and interest on that). It can be a very unsettling experience. There are ways that you can legally minimise income and wealth taxes, and while this will mean that people still have to make the correct declarations, they will have peace of mind that they are declaring correctly, and do not have anything to fear from the taxman. As we have always

recommended, only use legitimate means of limiting your tax liabilities, through tailored specialised advice. Amnesty on undeclared foreign pension income On 1st August, the Spanish tax authorities announced that an amnesty will be introduced for residents of Spain who are paid a pension income from abroad. It will run for a period of six months, starting January 2015. Exchange of information between countries has been strengthening over recent years. The local authorities have been receiving data on their taxpayers, and have discovered that a substantial number of Spanish tax residents have not declared pension income that is taxable under the terms of the double tax treaties. The Hacienda has recently opened nearly 28,000 enquiries into expatriates’ tax returns. During the six month amnesty period, affected taxpayers may

submit additional self-assessment returns for the previous four tax years. Under the provisions of the draft legislation, any penalties and surcharges would be waived but the income tax on the undeclared pension income and related interest would still be payable. Normally an amnesty is followed up by tightening of the tax rules. This is therefore an opportunity for expatriates to check that they have been declaring their pension income according to the Spanish tax legislation, and to regularise their tax affairs if necessary. British expatriates need to understand both the UK and Spanish tax rules for their UK pensions, and the interaction between them. Seek specialist advice. Troops needed on the streets of Britain LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

AKE no mistake, war is, as we speak, licking its lips and savouring the taste of death and destruction at the very borders of the UK, and indeed a number of other European communities. The enemy is everywhere. Never mind Iraq, Afghanistan and so forth, we need to look much closer to home for the true threat from Islamist militants. When some apparently slight and no doubt orchestrated incident sparks it off, rioting and war will erupt on the streets of the UK in a way unprecedented in our history, and to my mind it’s a great deal closer than we think. We should be preparing for it now. We will of course ultimately win, but the cost will depend totally on the extent of our preparation. If we are ill-prepared and still allow human rights, political correctness and all that rubbish to influence our decisions, we will be condemning even more of our citizens to

A
T the far end of a colourful life it occurs to me that what once seemed ordinary was in fact quite extraordinary. I had little idea what to expect when, as a deck-boy, I boarded the MV Britannic. The last of the White Star Company’s liners (think Titanic), I cheerfully looked forward to life on the ocean wave. Given directions at the head of the ship’s gangway, my recollection is often focused on the characters of that era. I wonder do such men still exist. Over the next years I was drawn into the lives of men who had survived the war’s coffin boats and convoys; many had been captured. Lives of many were filled with drama. The pugilistic frightfulness of Manxman Joe Kieg, caused even the shipping line’s commodore and his officers to roll their eyes and turn away
SHIP’S WHEEL: The officer of the watch would instruct the course to be taken. when he brutally and publicly exacted revenge on a foe during boat drill. At the ship’s wheel, a 16-year-old doesn’t question the course given by the officer of the watch. It was a quiet midsummer dawn as this great ocean liner swept silently along the southern Irish coast. Unnervingly the 1st Officer instructed me to steer a course that brought the leviathan at breakneck speed just half a kilometre from the Emerald Isle’s
coastline. I could see early risers on land but could only imagine their expressions. I reasoned afterwards that the officer had always pined to carry out the marine equivalent of flying under the Tower Bridge. On that morning the conditions were just right. The same officer put me on a direct collision course with a mid Atlantic pod of whales. I will never forget his look of quiet satisfaction when our plunging
liner separated one of these beautiful creature’s heads from its body. I never questioned it. Why would I? Everything to me back then was normal. Captain Ignatius Inez was the Spanish skipper of the Ibadan Palm. To save valuable time his technique was to ram the ship’s speeding bow into the muddy banks of Africa’s jungle creeks. By doing so the river’s current swept the stern round to negotiate each bend more quickly than by steering it. The same skipper used his six-cell torch to publicly beat the living daylights out of a stowaway. The generation of sailors prior to mine hurled such unfortunates into the Atlantic. Never to be forgotten the drowsiness of a day sailing off the Mexican coast. This hapless teenager was on the wheel when, in the distance, taking an interest in our ship, I saw a US destroyer. Quite incapable of making an independent decision and unable to rouse the ship’s mate, I stubbornly steered the course given earlier. I dread to think of the consequences had not the warship’s captain blinked first and moved smartly out of the way of our careering cargo liner.
Spanish planes that hit the big screen in the ‘Battle of Britain’ By David Kavanagh THE Euro Weekly News reported that five former Spanish fighter planes were being sold from a warehouse in Texas, USA and said they were never used by the Spanish or German Air Forces, but were used as Hollywood props. This is not quite correct. The five aircraft are Hispano Aviación HA-1112 which was a Spanish licensed-built version of the famous German Messerschmitt Me 109 of World War Two. The Germans having supplied Franco with aircraft during the Civil War, the Spanish continued to build these themselves both during and after World War Two. After the war the Spanish were unable to obtain further German engines so fitted Rolls Royce Merlin engines purchased from the UK to fit to their licence-built Me 109

It is still painted in the Luftwaffe markings it wore for the 1969 film Battle of Britain to represent a German Messerschmitt Me 109. airframes. This became the Hispano HA-1112, known as the Buchón. Ironically it was
the Rolls Royce Merlin engine that powered the Spitfires and Hurricanes that fought the
German Me 109s over England in 1940 during the Battle of Britain.
The Spanish Air Force, Ejército del Aire, continued to operate the Hispano HA-1112, including the five aircraft now for sale in USA, until 1968. These five aircraft, and approximately 20 more were purchased from the Spanish Government by the makers of the 1969 film ‘Battle of Britain,’ United Artists, and flown to the UK for the flying sequences of the film. The aircraft playing the part of German Messerschmitt Me 109s. At the end of the filming these five were purchased by a Texan pilot who had flown them in the film. He stored them in a warehouse in Texas for 45 years and they are now for sale for at least €600,000. A number of restored Hispano HA-1112 Buchóns continue to fly in Europe, mostly painted to represent German Me 109s.

MANY of you will believe that our dogs have the same feelings and emotions as humans and that they understand our language, this is a mistaken belief. Dogs do understand our body language but are unable to understand our emotions. Dogs are not small, furclad human beings they are canines even though they show loyalty and devotion to the hand that feeds them. Dogs live totally in the present. They do not worry about the past and do not dream about the future. They are not
endowed with imagination or feel grief, hate, jealousy or greed or other emotions that bedevil human society. They do have a high sensory ability which is often mistaken for a kind of sixth sense. They will
understand whether your tone of voice and your facial expressions are good or bad when you are talking to them, in whatever language, but they will not understand longer phrases than commands like sit, stay and get down. A good example is when we believe our dog is sulking or when a dog pines over the death of a member of the family. The dog will be
feeling the loss of a member of the family. It will also be confused by the vibrations of distress it picks up from the family when there are arguments. Once the family has settled down, the dog will make a quick recovery, for it lives in the present and not in the past. Do not attribute dogs with human emotions. Food allergy in dogs and cats - not to be confused with food intolerance WHAT does that really mean? Many think that it is like a peanut allergy or anything else that causes an acute reaction in the form of hives, itchiness, swelling, difficulty breathing and so on. Most food allergies however, develop over time. Proteins and carbohydrates are the biggest offenders. Additives and E-numbers can also cause allergy.
A pet that is fed the same food or food with the same ingredients can over a period of time from
six months to three years develop an allergy to these ingredients. Not to be
confused with food intolerance that can give acute reactions such as vomiting and diarrhoea. A food allergy causes general itchiness. Very often more predominant around the face and the anal area, but it can involve the whole body. The diagnosis of food allergy and finding the responsible factor is quite challenging.

Blood tests are disputable and elimination diets take a long time and dedication. The treatment would be to change to a hypo or an allergenic food which either does not contain the ingredients that cause the allergy or contains ingredients that have been hydrolyzed. THE TOP TEN WORST MAN EATERS IN HISTORY The majority of predatory animals can, and do, see us as prey under the right circumstances, however true maneaters are animals which prefer human flesh to any other food. Instances are rare but they do exist. Here are the top 10 in recent history. 1. The lions of Njombe This was an entire pride of lions which seemed to prefer the taste of human flesh over anything else. In 1932, in Tanzania, a large pride of lions went on a brutal killing spree and are reputed to have killed at least 1,500 people. In order to put an end to the killings George Rushby, a famed hunter, killed 15 of the pride and the rest then dispersed. 2. Two toed Tom This huge, male American alligator roamed the swamps of Alabama and Florida in the 1920’s, he had lost all but two toes on his left ‘hand’ which got him his nickname. Tom killed mainly women who went to the riverside to wash their clothes, but he would kill anyone who came close. Many attempts were made on his life by many methods including bullets, dynamite and poison, but his death was never confirmed. 3. Kesagake This Japanese Brown Bear terrorised the town of Sankebetsu, Japan, for several months in 1915 when he would frequently enter the town and kill its people, mainly children. A bear hunter was

France This Bengal tigress terrorised the Champawat region of Nepal in the 19th century so much that the national army was called out to deal with her. She racked up 436 recorded victims - nobody knows the real body count. 10. Gustave This African Nile crocodile is currently terrorising the conflictridden country of Burundi and has already registered more than 300 kills. This crocodile is reputed to kill for fun, not just for food, as he often leaves his victims half eaten by the side of the river.

Magic pill to stop greying hair THE concept of a pill which could stop the greying effects on hair has been floating around for some time, but now it may soon become a reality. FASEB (Spanish medical research organisation) has published a study in which they explain a mechanism which could govern the greying of hair. Researchers at the University of Bradford, UK, have demonstrated that, over time, stress produces hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicles and this blocks the production of melatonin, which is responsible for the colour in hair and skin. A sub product of this reaction is the production of enzymes which separate from the peroxide and allow the hair follicles to absorb tiny air bubbles which get
trapped in the hair and give it that grey appearance. The trick would be to eliminate the production of hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicles before they can allow the air bubbles into the shaft of the hair. Nobody knows which pharmaceutical company will be the first to perfect the anti-greying pill but one thing is for sure - they will get rich on it.

SHISEIDO, Japan’s most famous cosmetic brand, has launched a new product on the European market, Ultimune: power infusing concentrate, but what is it composed of and how good is it? The main ingredients, as stated on the packaging, are Damascus rose oil, Ginko Biloba, Perilla frutescens (similar to nettles), Thymus Serpyllium (of the thyme family) and vitamin E - as well as a lot of alcohol. The thymus helps skin to hydrate and is a natural disinfectant, the perilla can have anti-inflammatory properties and the ginko is a topical anti-oxidant - but the fact remains that there is nothing very new here and the main ingredient seems to be alcohol. The manufacturers are recommending that Ultimune be used before a serum as a sort of preparatory serum which leaves users with the question of why bother?

The dos and don’ts of Japanese table manners JAPANESE culture is famous for its complex system of social rules and conventions, especially when it comes to eating and drinking. Make sure to follow these hints if you ever find yourself dining with Japanese friends or colleagues. In Japan it is considered rude for a guest to pour himself or herself a drink. Instead of grabbing the bottle and helping yourself to the sake, wait for your drinking partner to pour you a drink. You can then reciprocate by pouring his or hers. When attending a social gathering or an elegant banquet, do not ever take a sip until every single guest has a glass, raises it and says kampai! (Japanese for cheers). It is very common for Japanese people to share dishes of food at the table instead of serving each guest his or her own individual dish. Westerners may find this unusual and awkward at first but remember that it is a different culture. When sharing dishes with other people at the table, move part of the food

Apartment terraces need attention to be attractive outdoor living spaces

ell at last we have a cool day and it’s been a joy to do some midday tidying up in the garden and on ground level and first floor terraces. Also this morning it was noticeable, in town, that more people than recently were actively caring for plants on apartment terraces and adding various artefacts to bare walls, to make the terraces more attractive outdoor living spaces. Yet it is still amazing that probably 80 per cent of apartment terraces are totally underutilised for outdoor living. In the bible for apartment dwellers
BRIGHT TERRACES: Four possible designs are shown. ‘Apartment gardening Mediterranean style’ we include check lists of the main season by season tasks organised into six groups. These are flowering plants, evergreen plants, herbs, fruit growing, vegetable growing and other. For instance the top nine tasks for late summer are as follows.
1. Keep up the daily watering and every few days mist spray the leaves. 2. Regularly deadhead flowering plants as flowers die. 3. Keep plants in shape by pruning straggly growth. 4. If herb plants grow large, trim off the excess growth and hang up the prunings as bunches or in woven plastic net bags. 5. As the days shorten and become a few degrees cooler, cut back the extent of watering to avoid the rotting of trunks and roots. 6. Take cuttings of perennials and succulents to produce new plants to inexpensively increase the density of your groups of plants. 7. Prune fruit trees and vines to shape. 8. Lightly dust the leaves and fruits of fruit vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, aubergines,
beans and courgettes etc.) to reduce the chance of mildew damaging them. 9. Spray fruit trees monthly with a neem (3-5 ml per litre) and propolis
(3-5 ml per litre) water spray against possible insect and fungal spore attacks. What is encouraging is that Russian expats are
now seeking out our books including ‘Apartment Gardening - Mediterranean style’. The latter not just by apartment dwellers but also by villa dwellers who have extensive terraces with groups of containers of various sizes. Four possible designs for apartment terraces are illustrated clockwise from top left by photographs from the book. The first is a colourful and restful eating terrace just outside the kitchen door. A wide variety of artefacts are used as well as plants. The awning protects plants from the low winter sun more than the summer sun. The second is a smallish succulent surrounded terrace with an awning that can be opened out which is great for enjoying the sun and evening eating with the chair folded up and a table opened up. Thirdly this patio in the sky, surrounded by neighbouring apartments with undeveloped terraces, creates all year round colourful perfumed greenery among tower blocks for the owners. The fourth shows a productive one square metre of a terrace. Fifteen varieties of vegetables could be harvested at the same time. Spain’s low property prices attracts home buyers from all over the world SPAIN’S low property prices are attracting investors from all over the world. While there is no denying that France had long been a popular port of call for people looking for a European hideout, the sharp decrease in real estate prices in Spain by as much as 60 per cent continues to woo potential home buyers and agents report the number of inquiries, especially from foreigners, have tripled. There are other reasons explaining the recent

Foreigners spending more than €500,000 in Spanish real estate are not only automatically awarded residency, but also free movement within the Schengen zone. This has prompted countless Chinese and
Russian buyers to flock to Spain trying to pick-up a discounted property in
Mallorca, Marbella, Barcelona or Ibiza. Russians are said to account for 9 per cent of all property purchases, while Britons account for 15 per cent and the French by as much as 10 per cent. Even though most Spanish real-estate agents are likely to say prices will soon start to pick up because of the
large number of foreign buyers, there are still some bargains out there, especially when it comes to bank repossession properties. For instance, the price of a 231sqm four-bedroom and threebathroom property in Marbella was recently reduced from €461,735 to €348,500, with a small 25sqm apartment there costing merely €33,000.
It would be a good idea to read the fine print though when buying a property in Spain. According to Barcelona agents, buyers investing in residential property are required to pay a Spanish transfer tax of between 8 and 10 per cent of the price tag, depending on where the property is, and some notary and land registry fees may apply.
Public spending is to be cut to increase revenue SPAIN’S plans to reduce public spending and increase government revenue are not running as smoothly as originally expected. Created in October 2012 to improve efficiency in all Spanish institutions, the Commission for the Reform of the Spanish Public Administration (CORA) took
measures aimed at reducing administrative burdens, removing administrative overlapping between public administrations and improving the organisation of Spain’s public sector. One of the measures seeks to alienate as many as 15,000 state-owned properties by 2015, but it has not had the expected results just yet since only a mere 14 per cent of the properties have been alienated so far. According to official sources, only 2,134 have been sold. It goes without saying it is impossible to predict whether the properties will actually be sold or not, as it depends on demand.

It’s just a waiting game THE PSOE party secretary general Pedro Sanchez revealed that he will run in the primaries for the party’s presidential candidate. No-one fell over backwards in surprise at the revelation as presumably this is why Sanchez became Secretary General in the first place. His position also gives him the upper hand in deciding when to hold the primaries. These were promised for November although this is becoming increasingly unlikely. The proposed Cataluña referendum could add a touch of colour to whatever happens afterwards and there are municipal and regional elections in 2015 to provide more colour still. They will also reveal whether Podemos, the populist group headed by muchtelevised Pablo Iglesias, is the fourth, third or - heaven forfend - second most-voted party. Better to delay primaries until the party and Sanchez know whether or not they are on a hiding to nowhere.

repeat as the PP’s 2015 candidate. In the old days she would probably have got her way on the strength of being the wife of former president Jose Maria Aznar. Botella is less of a trump card in today’s PP, although if she were popular with Madrileños, she might be in with a chance. But she isn’t and she hasn’t.

In other words, they excel at management-speak gobbledygook, a major source of irritation and barrier to procuring new business in Britain according to a recent survey. And it’s too often used by those who are incapable of managing and so hide behind buzz words and clichés to mask the fact they haven’t a clue what they’re talking about. The language of business like that of education and politics - seems deliberately designed to confuse. And, of course, if you don’t understand, you can’t constructively criticise because someone will - rightly and smugly - tell you that you

Turns out this meant ‘stop talking about it.’ In fact, what they really meant was either: “I haven’t the faintest idea what you’re talking about so can we talk about this in private so I don’t have to look a right idiot in front of others” or, more commonly: “No, I haven’t
done what you asked, but the last thing I want is to let on to a room full of people I screwed up.” Another friend’s former secondary school converted to an academy. Its new mission statement doesn’t mention boys, girls or students but
‘stakeholders.’ Stakeholders are defined as ‘citizens’ of the school. And citizens, in turn, are members of the ‘[School’s name] family.’ Heck! Aren’t stakeholders those things you come across throughout the summer here in Spain - at barbecues? And clichés beloved of our
politicians? How about: Hardworking families. Fairness. Onenation. Transparency. Or: “We had a frank exchange of views, and a constructive dialogue on which we now have the basis to move forward, and I am very much looking forward to our next meeting in the light of this progress.” So, ‘let’s think outside the box,’ ‘run it up and down the flagpole’ and ‘touch base.’ Phew! Whatever happened to plain old English? SEAT sales continue their upward trend. The brand ended the first half of 2014 with 200,200 vehicles delivered, 9.9 per cent more than in the first half of 2013 (182,200). SEAT has achieved its best result of the past six

years, exceeding the figure of 200,000 units delivered for the first half of a year since the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008. Sales of the Leon have provided the key to this growth. This compact car has seen its sales increase
by 62.3 per cent, totalling 78,600 vehicles, 30,200 more than for the first half 2013 (48,400). The ST estate version has exceeded expectations and contributed 21,200 units. The Alhambra, one of the fastest-growing models so far this year, adds another 19.4 per cent (total: 11,400 units; 9,500 in 2013). SEAT President Jürgen Stackmann underlined the fact that SEAT continues to grow above the market average. “Volumes are still low, but the European market is already showing signs of recovery. In this
context our sales are once again growing above the competition average. Getting ready for the rugby season at La Vila TRAINING for the senior La Vila rugby team has started and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday, 8.30pm to 10.30pm at Villajoyosa Rugby Club. The first team will play again this year at Division Honor level B
(Spanish level 2) hoping to return to the Spanish Top 12. Tickets will cost €5. The club also run a second team to play at Alicante level with no long journeys. New players are welcome.

Pego scramble round Oliva Nova on a warm morning ON an overcast but very warm morning, Pego GS had 36 members and seven guests take part in a Texas Pairs competition. It was a Texas Scramble competition with only two people in the team, and the handicap is 25 per cent of the joint handicaps of both people in the team. racer, Scott Redding who put in three days training with the Supermotoland team at the Fortuna and Albaida circuits to further improve his Supermoto skills and physical condition.
