Police clamping down on dangerous dogs SINCE March, officers of the National Police have prosecuted 19 people in Almeria and investigated 67 cases involving breaches of the regulations governing the possession of potentially dangerous dogs. In a clampdown throughout Almeria Province, National Police have been focusing their surveillance on areas frequented by children; for example, beaches, playgrounds and recreational family areas. The most common flaunters of the law are
people with potentially dangerous dogs who do not have the correct paperwork or licences. All dogs on the dangerous dogs list should be muzzled, secured by a leash no greater than one metre in length in public places, and never allowed in areas frequented by children. Owners of potentially dangerous dogs should have liability insurance for injury to third parties and properties of a minimum value of
€175,000. The only people or bodies exempt from the regulations are the Armed Forces, the National Police’s State Security Unit assigned to Andalucia, Local Police, and authorised fire and security firms. In Andalucia, there are nine breeds on the dangerous dogs list: American Staffordshire Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier, Doberman, Rottweiler, Akita Inu, Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasilero. The law also allows the authorities to use their discretion to include dogs that “manifest a markedly aggressive nature.” Owners of all potentially dangerous dogs need to be licensed, and this paperwork is available from the town hall for the municipality in which you live, or the municipality in which you and your dog work, if this is different. It is called ‘licencia para el perro potencialmente peligroso’. Owners may also be asked to undergo tests to prove their physical psychological fitness of owning such an animal. However, the law does not stop merely at potentially dangerous dogs. All dogs and cats are to be microchipped for inclusion on the national register. DELEGATE for the PP (Partido Popular) in the Andalucian government, Carmen Crespo, took some time to welcome visiting children from the Saharan area to the headquarters of the delegation, as part of an initiative where children in less favourable circumstances are given a holiday in Spain. The children all seemed excited, if a little awed, at
the attention they were receiving, but all were in agreement regarding the enjoyment of their holiday to Spain, nodding vigorously and beaming with pleasure when questioned about the activities they were experiencing during their stay. Carmen Crespo described the Andalucian project, Vacaciones en Paz (Holidays
in peace) as “caring and nurturing” work and went to great lengths to reiterate the commitment of the government office and the eight sub delegate offices to assist with hosting families of the Saharawi children and offer support during their stay as ‘boys and girls of Andalucia.’ Information about the project is available at www.saharandalucia.org.

Historic floating museum BOA ESPERANÇA is currently at Garrucha Marina and is open 11am - 2pm and 5pm - 9pm for tours. The Boa Esperança is a replica of the ships used by the Portuguese and Spanish sailors in the Age of Discovery. This particular ship was constructed in Portugal using techniques of the time. Twenty four metres
long, constructed predominantly from pine and oak, it is a floating museum of cultural heritage linked to the great maritime expeditions during the 15th and 16th centuries when sailors left the Algarve and western Andalucia to discover the world. Having sailed to various ports around the world in recent
years, the Boa Esperança has made a stop at the port of Garrucha and is open for visitors. The Algarve Tourism Board and the Nao Victoria wish to raise awareness and educate the history of these vessels. The ship is moored in dock D of Garrucha marina. Entry is €2 per person or €1 for children under five.

Making a pilgrimage… ALL over northern Spain cities and towns are getting ready for Saint James’ Day which is celebrated on July 25. There will be special church services to honour his life and work, exhibitions, theatre productions and a plethora of other activities. For many it is also the day to complete a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia - an undertaking done by thousands each year. Saint James, son of Zebedee, is the patron saint of Spain and was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and the first to be martyred. According to local legend, as he was preaching the gospel, the Virgin Mary appeared to James on the bank of the Ebro River - she was standing on a pillar, which is why Zaragoza has a Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. Mojacar’s virtual Tourist Office BEFORE travelling to Mojacar, or once you arrive, you can now download on your mobile all the information from the Virtual Tourist Office for smart phones and tablets. Mojacar Town Hall’s tourism department has developed a tourist guide adapted to modern times, with geo-localisation, images, text, audio guide, opinions and other features. The application will be able to be downloaded via your QR code, or the IOS and Android market. The free application remains on your mobile and is viewable off line, therefore offering tourist information wherever you are, even where there is no internet coverage. Recommendations for accommodation and restaurants, as well as information about upcoming events, services, history and maps, are some of the uses of this virtual tourist office. It is a means of tourist promotion and information, both in origin and as a destination, since the potential visitor will download the destination Mojacar travel guide when they prepare their trip, and will be able to organise their stay, their visits, accommodation, shopping, leisure and more. Classical music festival scheduled for August AUGUST 2 to 10 has been confirmed for FIMTE 2014 (El festival de musica de tecla Española), celebrating its 15th edition. Harpsichordist and teacher, Luisa Morales, started the festival in the year 2000, offering concerts, courses and
presentations to honour keyboard instruments and their designers, as well as those who play them. The events will take place in two venues, the Parador de Mojacar and Castillo Jesus Nazareno de Garrucha Special guests include pianist Albert Attenelle, an honoured
representative from the Marshall School, and a regular judge of such competitions as the Paloma O’Shea in Santander. FIMTE is regarded as one of the best classical music festivals in Andalucia, and the Guardian newspaper in the UK ranks it with respect.

ARBOLEAS based PIRdA (Proyecto Informatica Reciclado de Arboleas), an arm of the Albox Computer Club, hosted an open day recently, enabling its visitors to see exactly what they do on a daily basis. David Shear, President of Albox Computer Club and PIRdA, gave Euro Weekly News a tour of the facilities in the workshop, and explained how the
operation works. PIRdA takes old and used computers and recycles them for donation to charities and the needy. In the last five years, PIRdA has recycled and donated 50 computers to Spanish families across Almeria, the Red Cross, and even to a refugee camp in North Africa via a Spanish charity. PIRdA’s aim is to promote recycling and to
be as green as possible. The workshop operates on a shoestring budget and is staffed entirely by volunteers of English and Spanish who are mainly, but not exclusively, members of the Albox Computer Club. The Open Day was held to raise awareness in the area. Arboleas Town Council has been particularly supportive of
the non-profit organisation, and had provided them with the premises they have been in for the last two years. Volunteers are shown how to dismantle and fix computers, giving them an extra skill that they may not normally have access to. David Shear would like to take this opportunity to ask for more volunteers,
Police dismantle drug-trafficking operation as three are detained SPANISH law enforcement officials in Almeria continue to crackdown on illegal drugs. National Police officers recently dismantled a drug-trafficking operation and detained a woman and two men for allegedly selling drugs near a local high-school. Minors are said to have been among their habitual clients. Following two thorough house searches, the police seized 204 grams of marihuana, 12 grams of hashish, 13 stimulants, a marihuana plant, €355 in cash, a modified theatrical firearm and drug-dealing paraphernalia. The police investigation started last May as part of the ‘Plan Director’ operation after police identified a woman
living on Pinto Romero de Torres Street who was purportedly selling drugs near a high-school. After further inquiries, the officers determined the woman was also dealing drugs at her residence with the help of two unidentified men. The illegal drugs were kept at another residence owned by the woman located on Pinto Sorolla Street. Both residences had security cameras reportedly used to alert the drug dealers to police presence in the area. Police sources say highschool students, including minors, would go to both addresses to buy marihuana and hashish. The men and the woman were placed under arrest by the Judicial Police of the
Provincial Police Station of Almeria and are expected
to be brought up on charges.

OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested a 49-year-old resident of Roquetas de Mar for theft of materials from a farm in the municipality. Police had been alerted to the theft from a greenhouse in Vicar, where a large quantity of iron spokes had gone missing
as well as damage being caused to the facility in the process of the burglary. During the investigation the spokes were traced to a recycling centre in the area. Further examination of the goods established this was the stolen property from Vicar. Officers identified the thief and arrested him.
New Aldi in Nijar JULY 30 sees the opening of Aldi’s 50th store in Andalucia. Almeriblues far from blue in Roquetas de Mar ALMERIBLUES, held at the weekend in Roquetas de Mar, brought Blues fans from all over Almeria and was heralded a great success. The 15th edition of the festival introduced some new faces but also some firm favourites. Music began at 10pm with Papancho performing a number of well known covers such as ‘All Your Love,’ ‘Confidence Men’ and ‘Sweet Home Chicago.’ Pepe Delgado and Dente Largo followed from Sevilla by three enthusiastic friends of Blues, Swing and Rock & Roll. The third band of the night was
the Mighty Pimps, from the UK, currently based in Marbella. As a Blues group, the Mighty Pimps produce clear sound, crossing the traditional style of Chicago blues with rock music. Another popular band of the night was The Divills Rolling, born when five Spanish got together to enjoy the best of Rock & Roll. The big event of the night was Vargas Blues Band, headed by Javier Vargas, who formed the band in 1991. The audience’s appreciation was very vocal and everyone is already looking forward to next year.

Guardia Civil drug raid OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have dismantled an active drug distribution centre, seizing more than three kilos of marihuana in the process. Much of the drug had been separated into 57 small bags ready for sale, and officers also found scales for accurate weighing as well as more than €360 in cash. The investigation has led to the arrests of AGL (age 37), FJPF (age 40) and GPM (age 29), all residents of Aguadulce. The perpetrators have been charged with crimes against public health. The three arrests were made possible after a period of discreet surveillance in Aguadulce. Observing the influx of people visiting the premises, and identifying the inhabitants, officers

Once open, the motorway will be a total of 22 kilometres from the Almanzora motorway, opening the corridor for the many businesses in the area that have been waiting for easier access.
NEWS Podemos condemn Carboneras shield WITH the unveiling of Carboneras’ new shield, came a swift, harsh response from Podemos political party. Podemos has criticised the Gicar-PP coalition for organising a new coat of arms for the town without consulting its residents and described the new design as “not right, staple or ethical.” They said, “Podemos Carboneras strongly opposes the imposition of a new coat of arms without the town being able to vote for the change... Once again we are victims of the ‘Carboneras caste’. We demand a vote is made to see if Carboneras people want the new shield. We have a voice.”

Happy 150th for San Jose THIS year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of San Jose Maria Rubio, the chosen saint of Dalias. The town of Dalias has various events planned during 2014 to celebrate and this week included a triduum (three day period of prayer) which was held from July 19 to 21. The first day was covered by the parish priest, Juan Carlos Morales Morrell. He handed the responsibility the following day to P.Diego Muñoz SJ a popular missionary from the Sacred Heart Residence of Sevilla. Finally, prayer was led by Kiko del Barco Aumesquet, a Jesuit also from Sevilla.

Setbacks in war on homophobia GRACE FERNANDEZ, representative for the PSOE (Socilaist party) in Almeria, met with groups of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals this week. The meeting was organised to inform them about their petition to the government regarding the fight against homophobia. The PSOE is asking the government to come up with a comprehensive plan to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The initiative is being driven by Fernandez in her role as Minister for Health, Social Policy and Equality in Almeria, and her counterpart in Cordoba, Antonio Hurtado.
Hurtado commented that this plan is vital to the return of the fight against discrimination. He said that according to their data, “38 per cent of hate crimes are related to cases of homophobia.” The Socialists have revealed that the national government only acknowledged 16 homophobic attacks nationwide in 2013. Hurtado reminded members at this week’s meeting of the vicious attack on a gay couple on a beach in Almeria recently, an episode that he described as “outrageous and shameful.” Fernandez continued: “The only way this will end is by approaching the problem publicly,
with a comprehensive strategy that includes an awareness campaign against homophobia, a proper protocol of care for victims and a training plan for students, parents, teachers, health professionals and members of the security services.” Hurtado urged all LGBT figures in the public eye to be open: “Because it can be helpful to many young people who still do not admit their sexual identity, and can be useful to end discrimination in schools and workplaces,” he said. Hurtado concluded by encouraging LGBT people to ‘arm themselves with valour and defend their dignity’.

Access is a success for Verdiblanca ALMERIA City Council has amended its municipal ordinance regulating the installation and use of ramps onto pavements and terraces. These changes will
incorporate a number of suggestions from the Accessibility Committee of Persons with Disabilities Verdiblanca. In one amendment, the council has agreed to the
installation of ramps in areas of parking specifically marked for vehicles displaying disability badges, incorporating the recommended minimum widths and an improved
ease of access for people in wheelchairs. The council has agreed to install ramps within 150 metres of any designated parking areas. The ramps must now
guarantee access from the road onto the pavement, and be at least 90 centimetres wide, so as to allow frontal approach by persons in wheelchairs. The Verdiblanca has accepted the amendments with pleasure and gratitude and hope soon to get other suggestions implemented. One more suggestion is
the implementation and installation of ramps to areas of public interest, such as visitor attractions. They have expressed their desire for these additional changes in order for people with disabilities to enjoy inclusion and participation in social activities in the same way as non disabled individuals.
RBL summer bbq ZURGENA branch of The Royal British Legion held its annual barbecue at the weekend at the Hostel Meson Arboleas. Approximately 80 members and guests, dined and danced the night away with music provided by the band Atlantic. The event raised funds for the Poppy Appeal. David Proctor, one of RBL’s committee members said, “An excellent barbecue from the Hostel, and a clear and warm night made for a very enjoyable evening”. This is just one of the many events the Branch holds including coffee mornings, quiz nights and a monthly lunch club. THE outdoor gym at Santa Barbara in Huercal Overa has opened to the public. Mayor of Huercal Overa, Domingo Fernandez, visited the brand new park to inspect the facilities on offer, and to examine how the different elements can benefit the town’s inhabitants. “With this new park the residents of Santa Barbara have a great new space in which they can stay in top shape while enjoying the outdoor environment,” commented the mayor. In addition to the exercise equipment, the park also includes a new playground for youngsters to enjoy, as well as a picnic area for families to gather together and enjoy leisure time. In addition to Santa Barbara, new outdoor leisure parks will be springing up elsewhere. Workmen are already installing facilities at La Hoya and Perulera. The mayor concluded: “We are working to reach every corner of the municipality and to provide new services to our residents. Our goal is that everyone has the same opportunities, no matter where they live.”

Age Support Almanzora is a local charity based in Arboleas that helps elderly people within the Almanzora valley with home support by trained volunteers. This donation comes after another
successful year by the Luvvies Theatre Group, which entertain people of Almeria in various productions including the extremely well attended production of Calendar Girls, which the group performed last November. The group has already donated £1,750 (aprox €2,208) to Leukaemia research in the UK, a debilitating disease that affects people all over the world.

Fight against poaching in Lynx territory THE Guardia Civil have detained a total of 17 people in a key operation against poaching in the Iberian Lynx’s territory in the area around the Doñana nature reserve, Huelva. For four months now the SEPRONA (nature preservation branch of the Guardia Civil) has been investigating cases of poaching in the park. The Junta de Andalucia (regional government) asked SEPRONA to investigate poaching in these areas which are one of the last bastions where the lynx can run free. After several incidents of lynx poaching came to light, the worst being when two lynxes were found dead from gunshot wounds and a third was found with an amputated (by a trap) front paw, the Guardia Civil and the SEPRONA, encouraged by the Junta, decided to set up a surveillance operation in the areas and territories where the big cat lives in order to eradicate this practice once and for all. For the last four months the SEPRONA

This isn’t racism, it’s a fact and that this man risked so much to scrape a precarious living in Spain is a tribute to our imperfect society. However bad things are here, they are a hundred times worse in the place he left in sub-Saharan Africa and paid a fortune to leave. Shopkeepers who provide employment, pay Social Security, income tax, IVA value-added tax and comply with everything
STREET VENDORS: Are they really what they seem? that the law demands of a business-owner resent this competition. They are eaten away with overheads as they grapple with the economic crisis while they see their opportunist rivals make profits without responsibilities. But the looky-looky men remain. Given that the majority of the clients on a bar or restaurant terrace regard them as a nuisance,
why are they allowed over the threshold? There are dark conjectures that owners fear reprisals. Not everyone dismisses as a conspiracy theory the suggestion that they pay protection money and the looky-looky men are not what they seem. Some vendors are in thrall to people-traffickers owed money for their illicit passage to Spain or those
who supply their wares. One of the biggest financial-corruption scandals of 2012 centred on a still-remanded Asian businessman, ostensibly an impeccably upright citizen, whose alleged crimes include tax fraud, moneylaundering, prostitution and drugs. Is it entirely coincidental that the fake goods offered by lookylooky men are made in China? What is undeniable is that if they are asked the right way, some looky-looky men sell drugs although they are seldom found with enough on them to be charged with dealing. It’s generally agreed that the police are little help but the law is not on the side of law-enforcers in this area. An arrested looky-looky man will soon be out on the

street again, minus his wares and whatever money he has been fined but ready to return to the nearest paseo. And there he is, ready to accost you again, bags and scarves with a covetable log over his arm, and fake Rolexes or sunglasses tucked into a toolbox. But who does he really work for? How the many business people that advertise in the Euro Weekly News must wish they could get away with the Looky-Looky business model! They are legal, pay their dues, create employment and, through their taxes, help provide the many services we all enjoy. But what do they get in return? For them the struggle against the infamous Spanish bureaucracy is a daily battle. A little of the leeway given to looky-looky men by the authorities would go a long way to helping their businesses thrive.

THREE Spanish Autonomous Communities have rejected the proposed distribution of funds to fight child poverty. They also think the allocated funds are not enough. However, Health, Social Services and Equality Minister Ana Mato downplayed the criticism and said the distribution criteria were objective and that they were agreed upon with
representatives from all Autonomous Communities. The Territorial Council of Social Services and Dependency green-lighted a €17-million extraordinary fund to cover the most basic needs of children at risk of poverty and social exclusion, including medicines, clothing, food, hygiene and housing. Equality, Health and Social
Policies Andalucian Councillor Maria Jose Sanchez Rubio said that the proposed distribution of the funds was a joke and accused the Spanish Government of turning Autonomous Communities against each other instead of finding a solution to child poverty. The Spanish Government will study the petition presented
by some Autonomous Communities to base the distribution of funds on population levels. Ceuta and Melilla will be allocated €1.3 million and €1.27 million respectively, followed by the Canaries (€1.23 million) and Andalucia (€1.20 million). The government will invest €1.4 million in assistance and inclusion programmes for gypsy
RENFE must negotiate or risk a strike THE CCOO (communist party workers union) has organised a train strike for July 31. The UGT (general transport union) has stated that it will not be participating in the strike. July 31 is one of the busiest days of the year for the train services (RENFE) as it is when the changeover of people returning home and going on holiday happens.
The CCOO stated that the strike could be avoided if RENFE accedes to their demands and sits down to negotiate with them. The demands of the CCOO include the contracting of at least 1,400 new workers and the building of new highspeed lines as well as the internalisation of maintenance contracts. The CCOO is also asking that RENFE puts ticket inspectors back on to regional
trains as it considers that their removal was unfair and places undue responsibility on the drivers. Manuel Nicolas Taguas, Secretary General of the FSC-CCOO (communist party train workers union) commented that if RENFE would not move forward in its negotiations, then it would leave them no alternative but to go ahead with the strike.

Queen Letizia once promoted tobacco IT is no secret that Queen Letizia was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth, but most people may not know she once gave out tobacco to make ends meet.
While living in Mexico in the 1990s to pursue a master’s course at the University of Guadalajara, Queen Letizia took a job as a hostess and promoted ‘Boots’ cigarettes.
At the time she was simply known as Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano and had studied journalism at the University Complutense in Madrid before moving to Mexico.
The pictures published last week by UK newspaper the Daily Mail show a smiling Letizia - wearing a white shirt bearing the brand name, a red scarf and a pair of jeans -
giving out cigarettes to people on the street. According to Spanish El Mundo, newspaper publishing the pictures in Spain would cost around €20,000.

Hungry holidays POOR children in Spain often depend on school canteens to get a hot meal but it is not clear whether the service will be provided during the summer. Even though Spanish Ombudswoman Soledad Becerril asked Autonomous Communities to open their school canteens during the summer season, there is no general agreement yet. Andalucia, The Canaries, Cataluña, Aragon and the Balearic Islands announced
that their schools would keep feeding impoverished children during the holidays, while schools in the Valencian Community, Murcia, Navarra, Galicia, Madrid, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Castile will not. Some of them have opted for an alternative: their summer schools will be used to give out meals to the children. Others, however, have given their local councils the option of
opening the schools to feed poor children should they deem it necessary. Andalucia’s Regional Government guarantees meals to 4,500 children through its summer schools network, in addition to entertainment and sports activities. These schools are located in neighbourhoods with larger populations at risk of social exclusion and have a budget of €1.6 million.

‘Brand Spain’ is recovering image on the global stage BRAND Spain is recovering its good image thanks to the recent economic
growth and legal reforms. Spain’s international image is climbing up the
ranking and around 90 per cent of reports and articles about the country are now positive. After four years of Spain’s image taking a knocking at an international level it is now on the rise, according to a report released in June. Undertaken by the Reputation Institute, the survey ranks Spain at number 18 of 65 as far as international repu-tations are concerned; this is almost as high as France which came in at number 17. Spain has achieved an 8 per cent rise in its efficient use of public resources and a 7 per cent rise in the economic viability of the country. In addition, the country has achieved a 6 per cent rise in the fields of technology and innovation. As far as culture is concerned, Spain came in

Massive drug bust in Guadalajara NATIONAL POLICE have confiscated 144 kilos of speed, the largest amount ever confiscated in Spain and the largest amount found in Europe so far this year. The organisation, which allegedly brought it in from Holland and usually deals in cocaine, was intending to sell it on mainland Spain. The National Police have detained all 11 members of the gang who were using their contacts in the cocaine distributing world to sell the speed. The gang would reportedly bring in the speed in liquid form from Holland and store it in freezers, located in a chalet in Guadalajara, which is where the police found it and dismantled a laboratory which had all the necessary paraphernalia to prepare the drug for its sale. Along with the 144 kilos of speed the police also confiscated hydraulic presses, moulds, precision scales, test
tubes, syringes, €4,500 in cash, four top-of-the-range vehicles and other items used in the treatment of the drug. Investigations began when the police became aware of a 37-year-old man, of Colombian nationality, who they believed to be the head of the organisation and whose job it was to manage the distribution, transportation and cutting of the drugs. Having mounted a surveillance operation on his residence, the investigating officers where then able to observe a large vehicle which arrived from Holland and transferred its contents to a smaller, less obtrusive, van. The cargo was then transported to the chalet in Guadalajara for subsequent distribution. Eight of the 11 detained are on remand in prison until their cases can be heard; the other three are out on bail for the moment.

Officers save baby left inside car VALLADOLID Municipal Police officers rescued a baby from certain heatstroke. The four-month-old boy was left in the car by the mother at 1pm with the doors locked and the windows rolled up while she ran some errands. Locals called the police after they saw the baby was restless and crying inside the locked vehicle. During the heat wave that hit Spain last week, temperatures in Valladolid reached 35°C (95°F). Given the danger to the baby’s life resulting from the scorching heat, the police decided to break one of the car’s windows and pull the baby out. He was rushed to a nearby hostel where the officers washed his face and hydrated him. The mother, 35, arrived minutes later and said she was just running some errands down the street. She promised to take the baby to a hospital to have him undergo a thorough examination. Paediatricians and safety experts agree that hot cars can be extremely dangerous. At least 600 children have died since 1998 after being forgotten in the car by absentminded parents. On a typical hot summer day, temperatures inside a car – even if the windows are rolled down a little bit – can quickly rise above 48°C (120°F) to 60°C (140°F). At such temperatures, children are at greater risk for heatstroke, which can result in a high fever, seizures, dehydration and even death.

No oil exploration, says the regional government
THE regional government (Generalitat) will not allow oil exploration off the Valencian coast. The pledge came during a visit to Denia by Alberto Fabra and Jose Ciscar, respectively President and Vice-president of the Valencian Community’s regional government. Earlier both politicians attended a harbour-side fish auction where they met local fishermen and listened to their problems. As well as asking for better funding for improvements to boats and equipment, fishing industry sources revealed the politicians were also quizzed about planned oil prospecting by Scottish multinational Cairn Energy. Questioned later by the Spanish media,
Ciscar, who also heads the Generalitat’s Environment Department, confirmed he had told them that the local tourist and fishing industries “can be absolutely certain that the regional government is defending their interests.” His department had spoken out against the oil exploration ‘on more than one occasion,’ Ciscar declared. The regional and central administrations are working on plans to defend the fishing industry’s interests, he said, and also preparing an environmental impact assessment. Denia’s mayor Ana Kringe later said the local town hall was now collaborating with the Generalitat to establish the steps that should be taken to halt the oil explorations.

Town bans the wearing of burkas in public REUS City Council, in the Catalan province of Tarragona, has agreed to new by-laws which will prohibit people wearing a burka, or any type of full face veil in public. Although other Spanish towns have banned the wearing of this kind of veil in public buildings, Reus is the first place in Spain to go so far and ban wearing the veil in the general public. The coalition government in the city council, the traditionalist

Popular Party (PP) and the Catalan nationalist bloc CiU, voted for the law, while the opposition parties, the Catalan Socialists and PSC, voted against the new policy. Politicians in favour of the measure claimed that the law was necessary on the grounds of “security and coexistence”, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported. The coalition local government wanted to add a €750 fine for
those who broke the new regulation. However, the mayor, Carles Pellicer (CiU), and deputy mayor, Alicia Alegret (PP), believed that they couldn’t enforce such measures. The police can simply demand to see the ID of women who break the law. A juridical report stated: “According to a sentence by the Supreme Court, from February 13, 2013, municipal powers do not allow for fines for people
with their face covered due to religious reasons. If the municipal authority does not observe this limitation to its powers to levy fines, it could be committing the offence of perversion of justice.” In 2010, France controversially banned the wearing of full face veils in all public places. The EU backed up the law, stating that France had the right to enforce this measure and it was not in breach of their human rights.

RAND SPAIN is well past the point of recovery and is now surging ahead. According to a survey, the country’s international image has risen thanks to law reforms and economic growth, with 90 per cent of reports about Spain being seen as positive. There is much to be positive about, although unemployment and poverty are still at scandalously high levels. But the country has returned to growth, tourism figures are hitting record levels, car sales – so often the barometer of growth – are up and many say the property market has turned the corner. So are the green shoots of recovery showing? Yes, they are, and don’t let anyone try to talk the country down. In the Press there are many who take the easy option of sensationalist gloom. It’s easy to be pessimistic, but better to face the future with optimism. How other countries see Spain matters, so
let’s all put the best face on it we can. After all, it is a wonderful place to live, why would we want to be pessimists?
Looky here… Louise Elliot has taken a controversial look at the darker side of Looky-Looky men. Is she right to say that they are a nuisance and controlled by criminals? Maybe and maybe not, but what is clear is the tolerance and generosity of spirit shown by expatriates, as demonstrated in our Street Talk feature. Just about everyone we asked took the approach that the street vendors were just trying to earn a living, and if there was a problem it was society’s problem. Expats, it would seem, would rather the many African immigrants tried to earn a relatively honest living than resort to stealing to get a crust.
AT THE PUMP: Petrol in Spain is cheaper than in other EU countries
Petrol prices going down again and Spain below EU average THE price of petrol and diesel went down for the second week in a row last week. Average prices have gone down since the beginning of July when they had reached an historic high just before the holiday season. Despite this, prices are still 3 per cent higher than they were at the beginning of the year. Petrol and diesel have gone down by 0.55 per cent and 0.74 per cent respectively, giving drivers a bit of a
breather after the highs of the beginning of the month. The average price of petrol, across all the providers, is now €1.444 per litre when it was €1.456, and diesel is at €1.327, before it was at €1.346. The price of fuel in Spain is still under the European average: Spanish consumers are paying a yearly average of approximately €1.589 per litre while in most of Europe consumers are paying €1.616.

Shares boost for Logista… SHARES in Logista are once again quoted on Spain’s principal stock exchange, La Bolsa. Trading ceased in 2008 after Spanish-French Altadis, which owned the Fortuna and Gauloise brands, was acquired by Imperial Tobacco for €12.6 billion. Logista delivers to 300,000 delivery points in Spain, Portugal, Italy and France at kiosks, petrol stations, hospitals, pharmacies, hotels and restaurants. It also works with other companies in the consumer goods sector, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and publishing. The Bristol-based international company cigarette manufacturer obtained a 59.6 per cent stake in
Logista at the time of the purchase, later buying the remainder. It recently decided to put 27.3 per cent of its Logista shares on the market. After starting at €13, they immediately went up 1.9 per cent and half-anhour later had risen by 4 per cent. At one stage they rose by 6 per cent but by the end of trading and after some big sales, they closed on their first day at €13.40, an increase of 3.08 per cent. Logista CEO Luis Egido admitted afterwards that he had anticipated a higher opening price although debuting with immediate rises confirmed that the shares would “follow a long, upwards path.”
Aligning the minimum salary with labour costs would increase the demand for young workers, the report maintained. Spain’s minimum salary of €645.30 a month has been almost frozen since 2011 and the FMI’s suggestion echoes a proposal from CEOE, the Spanish Confederation of Industry.

‘Bad bank’ turns landlord SAREB, Spain’s ‘bad bank’ has agreed to free up properties for social housing. Six hundred of the homes that Sareb acquired as toxic assets from bailed-out banks will be ceded to Cataluña’s regional government. These can then be rented out at affordable prices. Groups of the properties located in 72 Catalan municipalities will be released at regular intervals and made available at rents of between
€150 and €400 a month. All are in a good state of repair, Sareb said, although it will also carry out any necessary repairs. In return the regional government will reimburse Sareb with the properties’ community charges, insurance premiums and administration costs. The apartments will be initially ceded for four years, renewable by mutual agreement for yearly periods after that.

MARKETS and Competition regulator, the CNMC, criticised ‘random’ increases in Spain’s pre-tax fuel prices. They are the highest in the EU and the CNMC cited the ‘rocket and feather effect’ of asymmetric pricing which occurs when the price of petrol goes up like a rocket as soon as oil costs more. When the price of oil goes down, petrol prices feather down very slowly, enabling retailers to take advantage of the perception that prices should be high. In May, the CNMC noted, the price of 95 octane petrol rose to €1.431 per litre, a 0.3 per cent increase on April while diesel cost €1.332 a litre. At the beginning of this month, coinciding with the summer exodus and the Iraq conflict, 95 octane petrol cost an average €1.45 and diesel €1.35. Independent petrol stations offered the cheapest prices in May, while amongst the principal operators, BP’s prices were the lowest for the fourth consecutive month. Cepsa abandoned the usual practice of lining up its

Repsol, Cepsa, DISA, Meroil and GALP are currently under investigation for agreeing prices and ‘exchanging business information.’ Repsol, Cepsa and BP are also accused of coordinating prices between operators and distribution companies.

PWC washes its hands PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS (PWC) refused to carry out a forensic audit for Gowex. The Spanish Wi-Fi network provider filed for bankruptcy a week after admitting it misrepresented its accounts for 10 years. Beforehand, and as rumours began to acquire substance, the Gowex CEO Jenaro Garcia announced that he had commissioned an audit by PWC. The courts are now weighing up whether to accuse Garcia of rigging company accounts and improper use of insider information.

EU fraud down 21 per cent says commission EU Member States must step up their work to prevent, detect and report fraud affecting EU funds, according to the European Commission’s annual report on the protection of financial interests (PIF). The report sets out detailed recommendations on areas national authorities should focus on in this respect. The report finds that detected fraud in EU spending accounts for less than 0.2 per cent of all funds. Nevertheless, the Commission believes that greater efforts at national level both on combating and detecting fraud should be deployed. The annual PIF report therefore recommends, amongst other things, that Member States review their controls to ensure they are riskbased and well-targeted. On the positive side, the report notes that good progress is being made at national level to implement new rules and policies which will strengthen the fight

Many are philanthropists and they live modestly. It is only when they die that we learn of their wealth and in many cases their quiet philanthropic gifts.

They should help you to fill in the official Hoja de Reclamación, the complaint form. If the owner has an agent in Spain, address your complaint and request for refund to this agent. If you rented through the Internet, you can inform the advertising website of any problems. Robbers don’t have X-ray vision: they notice your look and probably guess what’s in the wallet by that. Trick the thief - Carry a wallet just for robbers. Put in a bit of low value currency and a few fake credit cards etc. Meanwhile put high value bills and real credit cards in
another place - your socks, inside pocket wherever is handy. If you get robbed then just hand the ‘robber’s wallet’ over! Hit the gym - Obviously the more in shape a person looks could deter a robber from committing a crime. Reason might have us believe that a thief would attack a wimpy looking person rather than a ripped person! If muscles aren’t your thing then maybe just try to appear super confident on the street - especially as a tourist in a foreign country. Confidence tells a thief that you’re liable to fight to get your money back. And guys - Get that wallet out of your back pocket - it’s not safe there!!!

Mood swings over Spanish banking CHIEF ECONOMIST: Lucio Vinhas de Souza of Moody’s Investors Service. MOODY’S INVESTORS SERVICE still has concerns about Spain’s banking system. Despite recent improvements, soon-to-be introduced banking framework from Brussels could bring increased risk, the ratings’ agency said. Spain’s macroeconomic conditions, liquidity and capitalisation have taken a turn for the better, Moody’s acknowledged in its Banking System Outlook: Spain report.
Prospects for economic recovery are good, with a 1.2 per cent increase in this year’s GDP and a 1.7 per cent forecast for 2015. This will provide the foundations for gradual stabilisation of the banking sector, Moody’s said. Nevertheless, none of these factors has persuaded Moody’s to modify its negative outlook for the country’s banks. “Europe’s new bank resolution framework has increased credit risks for
senior unsecured creditors and drives the negative outlook for the system,” it explained. Banks will continue to be affected by the real estate sector, whose excessive offer of residential property will result in persistently falling prices, the agency predicted. The volume of bad loans is still very high, it pointed out, and is likely to remain at ‘very high levels’ owing to the flagging economic cycle.

Preoccupation with manners of others is a real turn-off WHY are the English so preoccupied with manners? Not their own of course, but other people’s. If I get into an argument with an English person aged between 35 and 50 because they have been trying to run me over at a zebra crossing or their dog bit me or their child s**t on my shoe (it may have been the other way around, I don’t remember), it invariably turns into a discussion of manners: my manners. They will concede that I have a right to be upset, “But it’s the way you say it. You have to say it with a smile!” they say unsmilingly. If I insist, mildly, that my manners are not the primary problem, or even (heaven forbid) dare to suggest that they have some sort of responsibility with regard to their child or dog, it will invariably end with them threatening me with physical violence: “If you ever talk to me/my wife/my child like that again I will smash your head in.” The threat as such is not the problem, I don’t want to talk to them, I never did. I just want them not to push me, spit on me or run me over. I can walk away, but the attitude puzzles me. Are English bar brawls nowadays about who is more polite? It must be a very lucrative business because it has been going on for years and they seem to do the rounds regularly where I live, yet people still fall for it. Indeed, there was a tale of woe on these pages not so long ago. It’s been many years since I fell into their trap. It cost me dear but we all learn from our mistakes and now when they knock on my door I turn them away. Fortunately I speak some Spanish but these men are persistent and they can be rather intimidating and will try to imply that you are breaking the law if you don’t let them in. I shudder to think how easily some of my fellow Brits are going to fall into their clutches. Just remember gas inspectors come to your home only if you have called them yourself. have a flutter on the legal gaming machines in some bars. Based on my own experience, do not waste your money unless the rules are clearly available. About a year ago I placed a bet on a winning horse only for it to be disqualified. Payment was refused under their rules which were not available at the time but were verified as being correct by the gaming concern. Imagine my delight on having another bet on a horse which finished second and was promoted to first place by the stewards, giving me a winning bet. Once again, however, payment was refused due to their rules which were still not available. The decision was once again upheld by the gaming concern, but as a gesture of goodwill they kindly offered to settle the bet as void, therefore giving me my stake money back. What a cheek! Belt and braces THEY say that Homo Sapiens is the only species that stubs its toe twice on the same stone. The first time was the tragic high-speed train accident last July in Santiago de Compostela, when an ultramodern ‘Alvia’ bullet train derailed, killing 79 passengers and injuring 130. It was not equipped with passenger seat belts, although no Spanish news media at the time deemed such a glaring and fatal flaw worthy of comment. Last May my wife was a passenger on the AVE high-speed train from Valencia to Madrid. She and a friend can testify to the fact that the AVE fleet of bullet trains which reach speeds of over 300 kilometres an hour are not equipped with passenger seat belts either. Why not? Does it cost so much to install them? How much is a life worth? We are obliged by law to fasten and ‘buckle up for safety’ with stiff fines guaranteed if we don’t in private cars and taxis. They’re obligatory in Spain on all school buses, long-distance coaches, planes and even some ships. Wouldn’t seat belts have saved at least some, if not many, precious lives in the ill-fated derailment last August? Richard M McBride, Benidorm

I
FIRST met Cilla Black in New York in 1964. Purely by coincidence I was ensconced in the hotel opposite the one occupied by the Beatles, who were in America for the first time to perform a number of venues, including an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Cilla and some of the entourage, including Brian Epstein, were also staying in the same hotel. When I was introduced and spent some quality time with Cilla I found her bright, unassuming and a veritable bundle of fun. Well, the years have certainly taken care of that. The tirade of self-pitying drivel that has emerged this week simply defies the imagination. And the reason? Wait for it. She’s going deaf. Before you all start screaming how terrible this can be, I can assure you that, as a long-term sufferer of extremely high tinnitus, I am fully aware that hearing problems can be chronic and horribly debilitating. But give us a

OST of the people we spoke to had a sympathetic view of looky-looky men. Business Development Executive at Currencies Direct, in Mallorca, Christian Severinsen, said: “I believe that the tendency reflects a deeper issue in society. As they may be here illegally, they cannot claim unemployment or use Social Security. They could be a tourist attraction if there were not too many of them.” Julie Law from Yorkshire Linen Warehouse, Mijas, Malaga, commented: “Everybody has to survive, so I don’t think they are a drain or a tourist attraction, especially now as they are not as intrusive as they used to be five or 10 years ago.They give you your space.”

ELL, did your teacher friend/relative/neighbour receive a designer handbag as an end-of-term gift this summer? According to reports, teachers at some UK fee-paying schools are being handed extravagant gifts by pupils, in a trend driven by hugely wealthy foreign parents. Witnesses have reported seeing “boxes and boxes of Prada and Chanel” outside the headteacher’s office at one West London private school. Indeed, apart from £1,000 handbags, diamond necklaces and free use of the family villa and even private jet, presents at some of these schools have included cases of vintage wine, tablet computers, Savile Row suits and items from luxury brands like Smythson, Hermès and Fortnum and Mason. One mother admitted that she invested in expensive gifts to ensure her son was “always on the teacher’s radar; I expect him to come home and say he was well looked after.” At schools like her son’s where pupils are the offspring of Russian oligarchs or hedge fund supremos, expensive personal gifts are in addition to the class gift to which each parent is expected to contribute.

So much for gift-giving in some private schools in upmarket parts of the country like London’s Knightsbridge, Holland Park and Notting Hill. All yummy mummy territory. But it’s not restricted just to fee-paying schools. In some state primary schools, teachers and teaching assistants regularly receive end-of-term gifts, many of which go beyond token offerings. Collections among parents have
been known to include vouchers running into hundreds of pounds. Now, in the same way that party bags have become the bane of many a parent’s life, this further instance of the gifting culture is fast becoming a form of competition, of one-upmanship basically an industry, which wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t a market for it. But surely common sense should prevail here. Alarm bells should have rung way back and a policy spelled out to parents that a simple thank-you note will do. After all, there’s a world of difference between a thankyou note or maybe something home-made and a Cartier watch or a wodge of cash

His impudence was tantamount to signing his own death warrant. You don’t mess with Wall Street or the energy conglomerates. The Libyan leader was simultaneously negotiating with Russia looking to increase its influence in the Mediterranean basin. Libya, a former US and British responsibility, looked like falling under the influence of arch trading rival Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia’s state guided energy giant Gazprom had already sunk $10 billion (€7.4 billion) into developing Libyan infrastructure in return for its unique type of oil. From the perspective of the West even tribal anarchy was preferable to such a threat. In North Korean style orchestrated media, at the raising of Wall Street’s baton,

vaults. Libya was listed 25th in the top 20 gold deposits in the world. The Libyan leader could liquefy all or part of Libya’s gold as he wished. As reported in The Times, banking houses refused to buy or trade Libyan gold. Cornered President Gaddafi could only make the bullion work by trade barter; bartering gold for hard currency and using the cash to develop infrastructure, build
hospitals, schools, modern highways, subsidise Libyan homes and businesses. Knowing the fate of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein, who too had threatened to switch currencies, the Libyan leader is thought to have moved the bullion from Tripoli to perhaps Sebhah. From there it could be easily transferred to the friendly African Republic of Chad. It might be just coincidence but Chad soon after was caught up in unrest. It needs Western help and NATO troops are again sent in to ‘provide assistance and stability’ or an excuse to seek Gaddafi’s gold. There are many happenstance similar in nature. The Sudan and Nigeria are also caught up in unrest and need Western help. Coincidence that they are the only two countries in Africa sitting on enormous mineral deposits. The question remains, where is President Gaddafi’s elusive gold bullion? The Libyan leader was a close confidant of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy; the two worked on many deals. Does Nicolas Sarkozy have the key to the gold’s whereabouts? The former statesman has since been charged with corruption and faces a long term in prison, unless he spills the beans.

Making Life Easier For Your Heirs None of us like to think about the day we will shuffle off this mortal coil, or how our loved ones will cope after we have gone. However it is important to spend some time now to make life easier for our family when they inherit our assets, and protect them from costs and taxes where possible. Writing a will is not the only step. You need to establish all the facts relating to the distribution of your assets, and look for the most advantageous structures to hold them in. British expatriates need to understand both the Spanish and UK regulations and taxes, and how they interact. Complex family situations need particular consideration. Or you may have concerns about how well your heirs will handle their inheritance. You need specialist advice on how best to structure your estate so it is distributed, and your heirs looked after, just as you wish.

T is a historical fact that once a civilization has developed enough to feed itself, it then searches for that with which to enhance itself. I refer to unnecessary objects that sparkle and glitter that have no substantive importance other than to astound or impress. When the cup runneth over, the arts and spirituality spring forward to command allegiance. As the community progresses, these afterthoughts become righteous in their own existence, lending a crowning importance to one’s esteemed life. Well, we wanted nothing more here other than a few elementary tokens to allow us to embellish our rudimentary lifestyle. An early
Christmas package or something unique and different would be nice. We dreamed of receiving something new, allowing us to revel in past moments... from an almost forgotten past - a memento. Our new Spanish Eden was a cornucopia full of fruits and vegetables herein unknown to us. The delicate chirimoya (custard apple), exotic artichokes, salty capers, bitter olives, were quickly adopted into the cuisine. Fine white wines kept us cool and dizzy during hot summer days and warming reds around the fire in winter. But where was the root beer? sweet corn? peanut butter? dill pickles and salsa? Oh, wouldn’t a Chinese meal be nice? Or how about Mexican tacos
or even a bad pizza? We believed we could be elevated to a higher plain of living with but the slightest increments to our living style. And the answer could arrive in the form of receiving a Care Package from back home filled full of goodies. We dreamed of clothing such as Levi’s and Nikes and Fruit of the Loom that actually fit and didn’t shrink or wear out. Backpacks and accessories including bandanas, hair clips, and flipflops could make our lives complete. Toiletries in the form of toothpaste, gels, after-shave, and bandaids were high on the list too. The latest shaving system for me and curlers for her had to be possessed. When the box arrived at the post office, it came

Possibly IU has a Caja B cash box overflowing with black money. But so does the PP if its ex-treasurer Luis Barcenas is to be believed. Leaning to the left THE PSOE’s brand new secretary general Pedro Sanchez is planning
a left-turn that will help the party win next year’s municipal, regional and general elections. No-one could argue that a leftturn won’t entice left-voters away from IU or the new, antieverything Podemos that poached so many votes in the European elections. But the people who always decide elections for both the PSOE and the now-governing PP party are the floating voters.
SUPREME irony that PSOE cardcarriers chose Pedro Sanchez instead of Eduardo Madina as the party’s next secretary general. Outgoing leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba had wanted Andalucia’s regional president Susana Diaz to succeed him. Madina held out for an open vote that was grudgingly agreed to. Diaz, who wanted “unequivocal unanimity” behind her before she would take on the leadership, withdrew. Sanchez, meanwhile, assured Diaz that he would not make a bid. In some quarters, Madina’s losing out to Sanchez is seen as a punishment vote, a last hurrah from the old order and Andalucia. Despite the new names, politics are still being played within politics.

While spending on hospital and outpatient care grew in many countries in 2012, almost twothirds of OECD countries have experienced real falls in pharmaceutical spending since 2009. These reductions have been driven by price cuts, often through negotiations with manufacturers, and a growing share of the generic market. ROSES can do well in Spanish gardens as they have for two millenniums. However, although the flowers and perfume can undoubtedly make a feature of a wall,
corner of the garden, patio or courtyard, such things require a fair amount of effort. The six most important factors being the choice

frequent removal of dead flowers, the prevention of diseases and a heavy winter pruning. Before you decide to invest in rose plants recognise that: Although roses can flower for nine months of the year they will not be as continuously flowering or as profusely covered with flowers as say bougainvilleas or lantanas. Climbers can be planted as an isolated feature or fitted in with other climbers on a wall or pergola but bush roses look best in a dedicated rose bed or garden, planted closely to give a mass of colour. But as already suggested that means a lot of work deadheading branches as flowers die, as well as a heavy winter pruning. In hot weather roses often last longer if cut
and put in a vase than if left on the bush. If one cuts roses for the house this reduces the colour in the rose garden unless extensive. This is why many Spaniards, and ourselves, grow their roses alongside their vegetable plots. In general there is less choice of varieties of roses in Spanish nurseries than in northern Europe, some of the varieties you will not recognise, and the best varieties sell out fast. Unless you have a local nursery with a good selection, obtain a few mail order catalogues from UK specialists and order early to avoid disappointments. Our experience is that exporters choose very strong rooted plants to avoid any complaints. Don’t buy Spanish roses
HOMES & GARDENS until you can see them in bloom and can smell the perfume. One good thing about Spain is that it is easy to propagate roses from cuttings at any time of the year. So beg a cutting of every rose that impresses you in your neighbours’ and friends’ gardens, or keep the stems of cut roses when they empty a vase to throw them away. We use the following approach learned from a Spanish neighbour. Cut off the flowering or leafy top. Slit the base of the cutting for a centimetre and a half and squeeze in a dried sweet corn seed. Plant the cutting so that two thirds of the cutting is buried making sure that the sweet corn is not dislodged. Keep damp. We prefer to plant cuttings in the open ground to planting in pots… largely because we might forget to water

Feed by working well rotted manure into planting holes and surround the base of planted stems with a ring of horse manure each spring. A twice monthly feed with a proprietary rose fertiliser or comfrey solution is also beneficial during the months of flowering. Plant garlic corms alongside each plant or if growing alongside the vegetable plant grow a line of garlic through the rose bed to protect against fungal diseases. Spray plants against rust with an infusion made from horsetail and tomato leaves. Prune off any diseased leaves and stems as soon as they occur and dispose of well away from rose bed. Brian O’Driscoll joins BT Sport as a rugby expert in a new step in his career BRIAN O’DRISCOLL has joined BT Sport as a rugby presenter. The oven should be heated to around 210 degrees Celsius and the bacon placed on a baking sheet then just slide it into the oven where it will sizzle away

A burger to die for at Heart Attack Grill
WHILE mouth-watering and incredibly tasty, hamburgers sometimes have a bad reputation for their high fat, sodium and calorie content. Anyone who has ever watched ‘Super Size Me’ may think twice before eating a Big Mac with its 550 calories or a bacon cheeseburger at Burger King with its 300 calories. However that is nothing compared to what the ‘Heart Attack Grill’ in Las Vegas serves its customers. Does the Quadruple Bypass Burger sound yummy? Estimated by some to be worth 8,000 calories, this massive hamburger has four half-pound beef patties, eight slices of American cheese, half a sliced red onion, a whole sliced tomato and 20 slices of bacon in a lardcoated bun. And no hamburger meal would be complete without French fries, called ‘Flatliner Fries’ by the restaurant and deep fried in pure lard.

Tips for a great fruit salad with flavour THERE’S more to making a fruit salad than just tossing chopped pieces of random fruit in a bowl. A fruit salad that is alluring to the eye and pleasing to the palate contains seasonal and local fruit. Using produce flown from halfway across the world during its offseason will often result in a mealy and insipid salad. It is also advisable to buy fruit with the same levels of ripeness. There is nothing less appetizing than a salad where some bites are spongy while others too tough. Use fruit with different textures and colours, like orange, green and red. This will help contrast each fruit in the salad. Combining textures keeps the palate engaged and will make for a more
interesting experience. Get rid of all stems, skins and pits. The salad will just look cleaner if every piece of fruit is properly prepped beforehand. Try to use equal parts of each fruit and go for uniformly cut pieces since this will make eating the salad easier. The flavour of the salad can be amplified with juice from lemons or limes and add whipped cream or yogurt. This will add a creamy richness to the fruit salad. Andalucia to fight unemployment THE Junta de Andalucia has announced a new plan to fight unemployment. Territorial Planning and Housing Secretary Pedro Fernandez held a press conference in Albox to explain the measures taken by the Junta de Andalucia to reduce unemployment levels. The Junta recently passed a decree expected to benefit people over 30 years of age, said Fernandez. The initiative is “a step forward towards economic recovery in Andalucia,” he added. The project has a budget of €106 million and will benefit the population sector that represents “one third of the unemployed in the autonomous community.” Fernandez said local councils and socially-oriented companies have committed themselves to helping with the initiative. The decree adds up to other measures already put in place by the Junta, including the ‘Plan Empleo Joven’ (Youth Employment Plan) that will benefit 19,000 young people, the
financial aid programme benefiting the construction sector with the investment of €200 million, the social inclusion decree with a budget of €40 million and the scholarships agreements reached with financial institutions. Fernandez said the plan presented by the Spanish Government to distribute funds aimed at fighting poverty was embarrassing and a blow to Andalucia. Spain’s Central Government said the autonomous community would be allocated €1.2 million out of the €17million fund. “That is not enough,” said Fernandez. “Andalucia is being robbed,” he added. As stated by the secretary, the region would get €4.3 million if the allocation were made based on population levels. In addition, he asked Spain’s Central Government for a “fair” autonomous financing that does not affect Andalucia and said that the enforcement of the Organic Law for the Improvement of Educational Quality (LOMCE) is “a joke” because “it forces communities to advance funds.”

ELLO and welcome again to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last week PIRdA, the registered charity arm of Albox Computer Club (also a registered charity), held an open day to let you see exactly what we do, and how we do it. By meeting some of the clever folk that volunteer to make up the team we
wanted to demonstrate why your information is safe right up to the point when we completely obliterate it beyond the powers of any law enforcement agency’s recovery skills! As just about every expat in Spain has a computer of some description or other, I was wondering just how many of you missed the chance to witness, first hand, REAL EXPERTS and talented volunteers, discussing and demonstrating, not only the techniques and tools that allow us to ensure the
security of YOUR INFORMATION but also the vast array of equipment that is now a part of the Information Technology world and the level of real expertise demonstrated there. While I was there, and deepest apologies to everyone that had spent hours setting up the displays for not being there to offer my help (because it took the same time to take it all down and put it back!), my greatest pleasure was chatting to, and explaining the workings of a computer to, a 10-
year-old’s enquiring mind. I think that was the highlight of my day!!! Computers aren’t cute and don’t pee on your leg to get your attention! Non-animal charities need your support just as much! Belgians celebrate their Independence Day
LOCALS celebrated the anniversary of Belgium’s separation from the Netherlands on Sunday. To mark the occasion, the Belgian Beer Bar located on the Lorca-Baza road between Albox and Arboleas threw a big party on Saturday night so that glasses could be raised at midnight. From 8pm until the wee hours, eager partygoers headed to the venue (newly opened in June 2014) to join the owners, Jimmie and Joke, for a night of fun, entertainment, music, food, and of course plenty of Belgian beer.
BELGIAN SONSTRESS: Hanny-D kept the audience enthralled. Entertainment of the musical variety was ably provided by Hanny-D, a Belgian songstress who has quite a following locally as well as a huge fan base in Belgium. Hanny-D performed in Eurovision in 2011, has released a number of albums and singles and has featured on her own TV show. Fans of Hanny-D were enthralled as she belted out some of her own tunes as well as covers of familiar favourites.

Santa Maria church cranes leave RESTORATION of Albox’s Santa Maria church in Plaza del Pueblo is moving ahead. This week the cranes came down after the successful restoration of the tower. The shiny new church bell is now in its rightful place, as is the new ‘guard’, a weather
vane built in the image of an ancient version found during renovations, and recreated using old techniques. It now overlooks the town, holding a sword aloft, ready to protect the town and its people. The project, at a cost of approximately €546,600,

by the government, but also by the fundraising efforts of the church’s parishioners, who have hosted a number of events to raise money for the project.

Helping hand for entrepreneurs HUERCAL-OVERA COUNCIL: Promoting local entrepreneurship. HUERCAL-OVERA Council is helping local entrepreneurs to start up their own businesses. Thanks to nonrefundable subsidies granted by the council for the promotion of autonomous labour, entrepreneurship and employment creation, 16
new businesses have been created in HuercalOvera in recent months. Started in 2013, the initiative has so far benefited 52 local entrepreneurs. Employment Promotion Councillor Monica Navaro said the subsidies have been “well-received.” The project was launched “to help those wishing to take their first steps to become
entrepreneurs,” she commented. Applicants can be granted nonrefundable subsidies amounting to €2,500 as long as they fulfil the necessary requirements. “We believe in the entrepreneurs in our municipality and that everyone can have a great future in HuercalOvera,” said Councillor Navarro.
Youth centre praised HUERCAL-OVERA Mayor Domingo Fernandez paid a visit to El Saltador Youth Centre. He was welcomed by the staff who explained in detail the programmes offered to immigrant minors at the centre. The mayor thanked the team at the Association for Training and Social Integration in Almeria (AFINSA) for “the important work they do for these minors who are alone in Spain.” The centre plays a major role in their development as individuals,” said Fernandez. “Its work is crucial from a social and human perspective,” he added. The mayor told the team that they could rely on the council’s support in their continuing endeavours.

Real-estate sector is crucial for economic growth BETWEEN late 1993 and the third quarter of 2008, Spain went through its most important and longlasting economic growth period in its democratic history. It achieved a sustained economic growth that raised employment levels,
attracted new immigrants and made housing more affordable for families. Spain’s real-estate sector played a major role in the country’s economic growth for its undeniable contribution to production and employment rates. However, this spell of
good luck was cut short by the 2007 international crisis that sent shockwaves throughout Spain a year later, while the debt incurred by councils, households, autonomous communities, banks and companies increased. The efforts made to put the country back on track started to bear fruit in the second half of 2013 and in 2014. Economic growth, while still somewhat weak, can already be felt after a long recession. Changes in monetary policy, make it cheaper to access financing, help to reduce debt and increase activity.
REAL-ESTATE SECTOR: Major contributor to Spain’s economic growth. This also includes the real-estate sector. According to a report of the Institute of Economic Studies (IEE), building construction accounted for 40.6 per cent of the activity in the real-estate sector in 2008, while specialised activities in building construction accounted for 23.6 per cent - which represents 64.2 per cent of the gross value added (GVA), while real-estate activities
represented 35.7 per cent. In 2013, the contribution to GVA from building construction amounted to 25.8 per cent, while the contributions from specialised activities and real-estate activities amounted to 10.6 per cent and 63.7 per cent respectively. In the European Union, the breakdown of the GVA corresponding to the year 2008 was as follows:
building construction 15 per cent, specialised activities 21 per cent and real-estate activities 64 per cent. In 2011, it was 11.4 per cent, 19 per cent and 69.6 per cent respectively. As reported by the Appraisal Society, house prices in provincial capitals in Spain have stabilised. This represents a stimulus for new constructions and allows the country’s economy to grow.

McIlroy is 2014 Open winner GOLF - The winner of the 2014 Open Championship (at Hoylake, Royal Liverpool) was Rory McIlroy (17 under) who collected £975,000 (€1.23 million) for his efforts. Monthly medal at Aguilon THE 19th Hole Golf Society played its monthly medal at Aguilon. With temperatures soaring into the mid 30s it was a difficult day for most. The pairing of the day was Mark Danson and David Sharp MBE going head to head for the first time in a medal round. Mark returned the victor with a net 76 winning by one shot
from David, an improved Terry Caddick (T/C) secured third spot with a net 81. In the ladies Medal Nekana was the runaway winner with a brilliant net 74. David Sharp on the eighth and John Ball 12th and 17th took the nearest the pin awards. No two’s were recorded.

THANKS to the greenkeepers they are still playing golf at Cortijo Grande despite the lack of water for the greens. Last Wednesday there was one division with a score of 36 points by Barbara Wardley taking top spot. Second with 28 was Tony Stubbs and third with 27 John Wardley. On Sunday the winner in a tight finish with 30 points was Mike Picken, second with another 30 was John Wardley and third with 30 was Tony Stubbs. A back nine of 20 saw the winner home. You can still enjoy your golf at Cortijo Grande, just about, so they look forward to seeing you soon.
AN individual stableford saw Alf Taylor excel at Marina Phoenix as he won with 39 points. John Lally (37) was second and Tony Cordingley (36) third. The ladies prize went to Isobel Jones on 35 points with Judy Brookes second and Rosalie Fardon third. The team game on Thursday was a fourball waltz.
