€500 fine for drinking water on the beach BY-LAWS to halt infamous ‘botellon’ street drinking parties have claimed five victims who were forced to pay fines totalling €500 after being caught drinking water. The youngsters, three boys and two girls, were in Mojacar celebrating the golden wedding anniversary of their grandparents with their family. Shortly before three o'clock in the early hours of Sunday morning the group decided to go out for a drink in the Mojacar nightclub Maui, next to the beach. As one of the group, Jose Antonio who was out with his girlfriend, a brother and two cousins related: “We left the car in the outdoor parking and as there was a queue we decided to wait for a bit and opened the boot to get out a large bottle of water to refresh us. “We were talking when two Local Police officers showed up and fined us
because they said we were having a ‘botellon’ (drinks party).” The two Local Police officers fined each member of the group €100 for violating the controversial ‘anti-botellon’ ordinance approved by Mojacar Town Hall last year. The ordinance states that a concentration of people who are consuming drink or doing other activities that endanger peaceful coexistence among citizens in outside areas can be fined.
What the legislation does not say is what kind of beverages are forbidden to be consumed, so the police can equally fine people for a gin and tonic as for a soda or a bottle of water. “And that's what happened to us,” claimed Jose Antonio. A few metres from the parking lot of the nightclub was a Guardia Civil control point where Jose Antonio, the driver, voluntarily requested a breathalyser test.
“I asked them to do me the favour of testing me. Of course, the test came out as 0.0, as I had not drunk any alcohol. At least I can prove I did not drink alcohol.” Back home in Murcia, they phoned Mojacar Town Hall to explain what had happened, but they were warned that the word of the Local Police was more important. “We have put the case in the hands of a solicitor who tells us the fines have no foundation,” said Jose.

The Balsa de Cela gets a good clean THE residents and visitors to the Balsa de Cela in Alto Almanzora will enjoy a nice dip this summer. For the first time in over a decade Lucar Council has done a thorough job of cleaning the bottom of the lake, which has then been re-filled with water from the same environment. The cleaning task was preceded by a request to the Provincial Government of Almeria to help cover the costs that would result from this operation. The government contributed €5,000 of the
approximately €10,000 required to clean the lake. The town hall put the remaining amount on the table, got down to work and now the Balsa is looking resplendent in time to welcome the summer season. Work took less than a week to complete and included painting of the walls inside the lake. In the summer, the population of about 250 inhabitants usually triples with the arrival of relatives who choose to return to their homeland to spend summer.

A British Vice-Consul visit ROSSLYN CROTTY, the British ViceConsul for Andalucia, Ceuta and Melilla visited Zurgena last week. The historic Renfe building of La Alfoquia hosted the meeting attended by several mayors throughout Almeria including Albox and Mojacar, although there were some absentees. The event, organised by Zurgena Town Hall, allowed the Vice Consul
to discuss some of the key issues, such as the importance of registration of citizens of British origin in their local town halls. The need to encourage the ‘empadronamiento’ of citizens was backed up by the data provided by Crotty. Of the approximately 350,000 residents of British origin in the autonomous region, only around 40,000 have registered in
their respective municipalities. “Something is wrong,” expressed the vice consul in her speech. In looking for solutions to alleviate this situation, ideas and initiatives were shared that encourage entry in the records of British citizens in respect of the importance of registration for assistance in basic services such as the health care system.
Berja attractions TWO new tourists attractions have opened in Berja. The medieval Villavieja cisterns and the Hispanic Muslim Baths in the area of Beneji. The Junta de Andalucia spent more than €126,000 and involved local entrepreneurs in the design and completion of the projects. Road blocked HEAVY rain in the province was the cause of a road accident between two lorries last week. The lorries blocked off the A7 close to the Roquetas de Mar exit, causing huge tailbacks.

JUST 100 people turned up to a protest outside the town hall of Huercal-Almeria. The protest was arranged following the huge amounts of complaints from neighbours bemoaning the amount of mosquitoes caused by residual waters of the Rio Andarax.
Seven wonders THE Castle of the Marques de Los Velez in Cuevas del Almanzora is to host the presentation of the seven wonders of the town tomorrow (Friday) at 9pm. The exhibition will be on display until July 6.
Squid the star THE first Ruta Gastronimaca de Las Negras proved to be a great success with more than 200 people completing the whole route of 17 bars. Each bar served up calamares (squid), using different cooking methods. Cortijo del Fraile fine THE Junta de Andalucia regional government has imposed another fine of €3,700 on the owners of the Cortijo del Fraile in Nijar. This is the ninth fine placed on agricultural company, La Mision for failing to conserve the historic building. It has yet to actually pay any of the fines.

Officially called International Day of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Pride, it is traditional for collectives to publicly celebrate their sexuality on this day. Originally it was the day for LGBT people to promote self-affirmation and encourage the public to take a positive stance against discrimination and violence; a day for the collectives to promote dignity, equal rights and increase their visibility as a social group which celebrates its sexual diversity and gender variance. Although June 28 still has this aim, these days it is also an excuse for a massive street party in some cities. Gay pride celebrations generally consist of outrageous costumes and floats being paraded around the city centre; always with the rainbow flag and pink triangles which are the principal symbols of the movement. This year, in many countries, there will also be a heavy political content as the question of same sex marriages has been at the forefront of the political scene.

Road improvements in Mojacar continues MOJACAR Town Hall has been carrying out road improvements in various streets of the town. In the words of the mayor, Rosa Maria Can, “an improvement in road surfaces was needed.” Among others, Calles Rocio and Extremadura have seen improvements. Work on other urban roads is continuing with the regeneration of various road surfaces in the town, in the retail park area
of Paseo del Mediterraneo from number three to number 136 - a mainly commercial area, near the Hotel Indalo; Playa Venta del Bancal and Playa de Ventanicas. The town hall has spent €50,000 on the road resurfacing. There will also be a further €200,000 contributed via the provincial plans which will be allocated to improving streets and pavements in the town.
Wiki plea in Zurgena ZURGENA Town Hall has made a plea to the townspeople in a bid to improve its Wikipedia page. Aware of the importance of these shop windows that provide information to millions of internet users throughout the world, the town hall has encouraged its
neighbours in recent days to collaborate with the release of its Wikipedia page. The initiative aims to show the statistics of Zurgena, its history, heritage and all its attractions, making it as reliable as possible, which will be reflected in the town hall’s website and Facebook page.
The Wikipedia page has already seen the first modifications. The online encyclopaedia Wikipedia has more than 37 million articles and is a main reference point for users to look up information for business or leisure reasons, receiving 450 million visits each month.

Sophia’s to host an MMA fight night SOPHIA WELLNESS CENTRE in Arboleas is hosting an MMA (Mixed Martial arts) championship night on Saturday July 12. Sophia’s is the headquarters for The Asylum MMA team of Arboleas. The fighters that train at Sophia’s and represent Arboleas are Guido (The Assassin) Antonucci, Alex (The hangman) Corcoran, Ben (The Scarecrow) Scarborow, David (El Gigante) Sanchez Alcala and Antonio (Premium) Sanchez. ALMANZORA teenager Carmen Linares came out top in the first ‘Tasty and Healthy Salads’ competition. The Hospital La Inmaculada of HuercalOvera hosted the prize giving event. The competition was held on the occasion of the Sixth Week of Promoting Healthy Habits with the aim of promoting a balanced diet among citizens in the north and east of the province of Almeria. The event also aimed at highlighting the benefits of a proper diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and that these eating habits serve as protective factors against some of the most common diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. The competion required the contestants to create a

Kon-Tiki boat race is a hit THE Playa Mar Serena, in San Juan de los Terreros, Pulpi hosted the first ever Crazy Boat Race ‘Kon-Tiki’ recently. A total of 14 handmade boats took to the water in an event arranged by Pulpi Town Hall tourism depart-
ment in collaboration with Richard Ward, director of the San Animal Sanctuary, a registered charity set up by a group of animal lovers caring for abandoned cats and dogs in the area. A large crowd congregated on the beach not
wanting to miss this unusual event. The main condition to participate in this race, was that the participants raced in a home-made boat, ie, made by the sailors themselves, with a crew of at least two and a maximum of four. The race covered a distance of around 200 metres from the beach to a buoy located in the area popularly known as the ‘cipoton.’ With the difficult wind and poor seaworth-iness of the homebuilt vessels, life was made difficult for the competitors. However, fun, frustration and joy prevailed among the sailors, much more than the achievement of crossing the finish line first. Councillor for Tourism, Juan Bautista Lopez and councillor for Beaches, Pedro Jesus Martínez, next to event organiser, Richard Ward, were responsible for presenting the trophies to the winners of the first ‘Big Crazy Boat Race Kon-Tiki’.

IT was a Bulls Eye for FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) when they were presented with €247 by Alamanda Darts of Los Llanos market recently. Alan and Amanda Maunders, the co-owners of Alamanda Darts, arranged a Charity Darts match at Bar Unique in Arboleas, at the beginning of June. Entry fees, plus a
raffle raised a grand sum of €247 from a mixture of fanatical Spanish and English dart players. The winners of the doubles championship were Ron Tims and Simon Bowen from the Bar Union in La Alfoquia. Alamanda Darts will be at the FACE Night Market to be held at the Bar Kubatin on July 4.

Dames fun trip THE Dames in Turre enjoyed a final day out before closing for the summer break. Although there was thunder, lightning and heavy rain the night before, this did not deter the Dames. Members and friends boarded the coach driven by Diego and headed for La Manga in Murcia. Although it
was overcast to start, it wasn’t long before the sun came out. The group stopped for a coffee break at Cabo de Palos, and then headed off for La Manga del Mar Menor. On arrival some headed for the beach, and a soothing paddle, others chose to find a nice restaurant with good food. All too soon the day was over and it was time for the journey home. Once again the Dames must give a big thank-you to Lesley Barlow and Sylvia Baker who organise the wonderful trips. What would they do without you both? UK taste for wines IN the first quarter of this year the UK has become the main customer for Almeria wines. Between January and March, the British market accounted for an estimated value of €286,000 repre-senting

New service for Albox motorists THE mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena has met up with the Provincial Chief of Traffic for Almeria, Jose Maria Mendez Olivares. Mena called the meeting very friendly and in turn effective because it has
addressed all issues affecting both administrations. The aim of the council has been to solve the traffic problems of the residents, preventing inconvenience and travel when possible.
Nijar is getting ready for summer visitors THE town hall of Nijar has started work on cleaning the beaches of the municipality to leave them totally prepared for summer visitors The town hall is responsible for the cleaning and waste collection in urban beaches such as San Jose, Aguamarga, Las Negras and La Isleta, to highlight a few. This year there is a new reinforcement with six people in the summer offering a cleaning service to meet demand from the beaches. The town hall has asked for collaboration from users of the beach to help keep the beaches tidy this year.
During the course of the meeting they studied how to simplify the process to make the change of address and vehicle. The mayor stated that “it is important to streamline the efforts of citizens, and now these issues related to traffic may be processed completely in the town hall.” For both institutions the primary objective is to facilitate the free change of address and vehicle procedures. As stated by the mayor: “Until now, people have had to travel to Almeria to visit the Traffic Department. From now on, the town hall will be connected to them. In this way drivers will not have to make a journey for address changes or change of vehicle.

Three pickpockets caught in Almeria THE Guardia Civil have arrested three people from Alicante accused of pickpocketing in the Levante area of Almeria. The men, aged between

The night of San Juan 2014 saw an impressive storm with lightning, thunder and rain on the beaches along the coast of the province of Almeria. A quiet night was enlivened by the rain, which caused fewer problems for the emergency services for drunken or anti-social behaviour. There were few problems for firefighters, having highlighted the quiet night on the beaches of the capital and the province of Almeria. The 112 emergency services reported the flooding of a rambla in Aguamarga, Nijar, which dragged a caravan, a situation that was controlled by the Guardia Civil. The firemen of the poniente were called out to nine fires for the burning of stubble among the greenhouses of the area, as people made the most of the night of San Juan.

The cost of higher education in Spain
TUITION FEES: Can place a heavy burden on young students.
UNIVERSITY tuition fees often place a heavy burden on young students and their families. After finishing high school, most students wish to pursue an undergraduate degree and with good reason. A university diploma dramatically increases job prospects. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to pursue higher education. In countries like the US, students often take out government loans and work out special repayment plans at low interest rates or apply for a scholarship. But how expensive are Spanish universities? As stated by the Observatory on Higher Education (OSU) in its latest report entitled ‘The Cost of Studying in Europe,’ undergraduate studies in Spain
rank sixth among Europe’s most expensive post-secondary courses. Public universities in Catalonia charge the highest tuition fees and master’s degrees in Barcelona are three times more expensive than in 21 out of the 38 countries the report looked at. Only Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales charge more than Catalonia. The report underlines that most European countries charge similar fees for undergraduate and graduate degrees. In Spain, however, master’s degrees are more expensive than bachelor’s degrees. Vera Sacristan, coordinator of the report, said the Spanish Government
does not usually offer financial aid to undergraduate or graduate students, and when it does, the funds are lower than in other countries. For instance, 71 per cent of the nations considered in the report guarantee students loans at low interest rates or without interests. However, students in Spain, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Ireland cannot take out a similar loan. Sacristan said that “Spain must be consistent with its stance on higher education. If we think that university students can benefit the country, despite their economic situation, then we must charge less in tuition fees."
Hunt for abductor A KIDNAPPER is on the most wanted list of the Ciudad Lineal police department after two young children were abducted in separate incidents. Law enforcement officials have launched a manhunt to locate the criminal following the two kidnappings that have shocked Madrid. The kidnapper first struck in April, when he tricked a nine-year-old girl into getting into his car. He drove her away, held her for five hours, then abandoned her near a subway station. She was reportedly in good health, but still underwent a thorough medical examination to determine whether she had been abused. Now it seems he has done it again. The victim, six, was kidnapped near Ascao, when playing near her parent’s store. More than four hours later, a passer-by found her crying in a state of shock on Jazmin street, seven kilometres from
where she was taken. It was 11.30pm. The girl could barely speak and the woman alerted police. The six-year-old was taken to La Paz hospital. She was kidnapped at around 7pm. She was playing on the street with her older brother, 11. The kidnapper purportedly tricked the little girl into following him and used a ruse to gain her trust. A witness said: “Two men were watching her play. One was grey-haired and looked 40 or 50, the other was blonde and younger. The older man gave the girl some rubber bands like the ones used to make bracelets, while the younger man talked to her brother to distract him.” Then she was gone. It appears the kidnapper used a similar modus operandi: he tricked the girls into getting into his car, sedated them, kept them in a flat for hours, bathed them and abandoned them near a subway station.
Baby jumping ritual in Murcia most dangerous BABY Jumping (El Colacho) is a very peculiar Spanish holiday dating back to the 1620s, a tradition that takes place
every year in the village of Castrillo de Murcia to celebrate the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi. The ritualistic festival has been rated as one of the most dangerous in the world. During the practice of this centuries old festival, men dressed as the Devil, known as the Colacho, leap over lines of babies that have been born in the village during the previous 12 months. The act is said to cleanse the babies of
original sin, guard them against illness, evil spirits and to ensure them safe passage through life. While the Church still teaches that baptism by water is to cleanse the soul of original sin, Pope Benedict XVI has asked Spanish priests to distance themselves from El Colacho, in order to downplay the tradition’s connection with Catholicism, and to reassert the fact that baptism is not a giant leap by an airborne devil.

Squatters investigated NATIONAL POLICE in Almeria are looking into 20 illegally occupied houses in Villablanca. The houses are owned by several Spanish financial institutions. The first squatters arrived in 2011. Back then, private security guards were hired and they managed to evict the illegal occupants with the help of law enforcement officials. The latest investigation was launched after a complaint was formally lodged with the police by Sareb. The situation has upset a large number of Villablanca residents. They complain about increasing crime rates in the area and about the unwanted squatters who live there for free.

Following an inspection conducted by the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) in a local grow shop, police officers seized 185 cannabis sativa plants, 2,795 marihuana seeds and arrested three men, aged 36, 39 and 31. Grow shops legally sell cannabis seeds, fertiliser, soil and utensils used for growing cannabis sativa plants. Cannabis sativa is a herbaceous plant, whose seeds are used to make hempseed oil, which can be used for cooking and as bird-feed. Its flowers contain psychoactive
chemical compounds usually consumed for spiritual, recreational and medicinal purposes. Cannabis sativa is distinguished from Cannabis indica, traditionally cultivated in Pakistan and India for the production of hashish. During the inspection, Guardia Civil officers noticed an artificially lit room in the back of the store that was being used as a greenhouse. Agents searched it and discovered germinated marihuana plants as well as empty marihuana seed envelopes, which probably means they had been recently sown. The three men were brought before the Magistrate Court number 3 of Almeria.

Poachers stopped in Natural Park GUARDIA CIVIL officers stopped two poachers in Almeria Province. The police were alerted to the presence of two unidentified individuals who had apparently been illegally fishing in a cove of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. Agents of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) established several checkpoints on nearby roads to stop the individuals after identifying the vehicle they were driving. The alleged poachers were pulled over by the police at one of the checkpoints and asked to identify themselves. The police asked them to open the trunk of their car where they found one grouper, two sea basses, one bream and four
octopuses weighing 18 kilograms. In addition, the police found two full neoprene suits, diving goggles, flippers and one spear gun. One of the men admitted to being the owner of the spear gun and to having caught the protected species found in the trunk of the car. The men were charged with fishing without a proper licence and
fishing in areas where it is illegal to do so. The spear gun and the species were seized and taken to the Provincial Agriculture, Fishery and Environment Delegation of the Junta de Andalucia in Almeria. Among other things, SEPRONA is in charge of enforcing regulations regarding the protection of the environment, protected species and water resources.

Phone shop thief caught GUARDIA CIVIL officers in Vera have detained 18 people in relation to a break in at a mobile phone shop. The perpetrator of the burglary sold stolen items at a huge discount of between 70 and 80 per cent of the original market price. In the first phase of the investigation the Guardia Civil arrested the main suspect and in the second phase they arrested another 13 people and charged four. Investigations started back in January when the robbery in a phone shop, of around 30 smart phones, some sim cards and five tablets,
first came to the attention of the Guardia Civil officers in Vera. After a short inquiry they came across an individual who had a history of selling stolen objects, and he was selling top notch smart phones for â‚Ź50 each. After locating the individual, a 21-year-old man, they proceeded with his arrest and confiscated five smart phones, one tablet and 17 sim cards - all of which had been stolen from the phone shop in Vera. The young man was sent to prison on remand with no possibility of bail until his case goes to court.
In the second, and longer, part of the investigation the Guardia Civil went on to identify and locate the people who bought the stolen goods in the hope of recovering them and arresting those responsible. They managed to detain 13 people and charge another four - all for receiving stolen goods - and they confiscated 10 smart phones. The 17 people who were detained and charged in the second part of the investigation were all released on bail until the courts can hear their respective cases.

Romanian sex gang busted IN a joint operation with the Romanian police, National Police in Almeria have freed five women who were being forced to prostitute
themselves. The victims were enticed with false promises and lies about finding a good, well paid job in Spain and, once
here, they were forced into total isolation in their homes and then sexually exploited. The investigations began when one of the
women made an official complaint at a police station in Almeria in which she stated that since she was a minor she had been forced to
prostitute herself for a group of Romanians. The young woman had been captured in Romania and transported to Almeria by the gang. If she ever refused to comply with their orders they would threaten her and her family as well as ill treating her both physically and mentally. Initial investigations revealed the identity of several members of the gang, their MO, how they selected their victims for sale - all the women were young, poor and uneducated Romanians. Their MO was to select a young woman and make her promises of a “new life” in Spain with a good job. Once here they were subjected to constant threats, lived in isolation from each other so they had
nobody to confide in, and were told that, as they could not find work for them the women would have to pay their debt, incurred during their transport to this country, by prostituting themselves in the many clubs and brothels of El Ejido. Several of the women who were interviewed in the course of the investigation explained that they were frequently moved around and “sold” on to other clubs and other gangs, always Romanian. So far six men, all Romanian, have been arrested, the joint operation continues and a police spokesperson has commented that there may soon be more arrests, but that all the leaders of the gang had already been caught.

Spain exports wine tech to Napa Valley THE vineyards of Cataluña are exporting their expertise in irrigation systems to the valleys of the Napa region in California. Cataluña’s councillor for Agriculture, Josep Maria Pelegri, has been visiting the American wine region and in particular the area where Codorniu’s techniques are being used. Pelegri is visiting the area to reinforce the internationalisation of Cataluña’s industry and technologies and he was accompanied on his visit by Xavier Farre, a representative of Codorniu. Codorniu and the Institute for Agricultural Technology (IRTA) have been working together since 2001 on a project to

Spain’s new king meets the victims NEWLY proclaimed King of Spain, Felipe VI, and his wife Queen Letizia have met with victims of terrorism in their first official event together since Felipe took the throne last week. The group welcomed the New King’s first speech calling for a “New Spain” during his proclamation in parliament. The figure is a 7.1 per cent increase compared to the same period last year according to the Frontier Tourist Movement Survey (Frontur) released by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Among the autonomous communities, the Canaries saw the largest annual increase (13.1 per cent) with the arrival of 4.8 million foreign tourists, followed by Catalonia with an increase of 8 per cent. Nationally, Spain received 21.4 million foreign tourists until May, representing an increase of 8.2 per cent over the same period in 2012. In the first five months of the year almost all major emitting countries contributed to this growth, particularly Britain and France with increases of 6.9 per cent and 11.1 per cent, respectively. Scrap metal for the price of copper as National Police dismantle crime gang NATIONAL POLICE have dismantled a crime gang which was selling scrap metals at the price of copper and making millions in the process. The gang would make cubes of the low quality scrap metal and then put a fine layer of copper over the top of it making it look like solid copper. For a year and a half they sold between 80 and 120 tonnes every week and made profits of between €192,000 and €320,000. Three workers at a metals plant were working with the gang to accept the cubes and confirm their ‘quality.’ Fifteen people have been detained in Huelva and Barcelona, among them the leader of the gang. Investigations began when a series of financial transactions came to the attention of the police; a scrap metal group was frequently moving sums of up to €120,000. Initial enquiries revealed that the money was being moved by a family, whose business was scrap metal, and some of the workers at the family’s businesses. There were no tax records of the transactions and, as such, police suspected tax evasion, money laundering, belonging to a criminal group, falsification of documents, swindling and possible illegal possession of firearms. The MO of the gang was as follows: in their factory the gang would make 60x60x60 cubes which they would fill with the scrap metal and then cover with copper. The cubes would then go to a foundry in Huelva where the gang had three workers who would confirm the cubes as good quality and pass them through the system.
In this way the gang was pocketing up to €320,000 every month. When the police raided
the gang’s warehouse and factory they found cash hidden in fire extinguishers which
confirmed that illegal business was going on. The raids produced two revolvers, more than
100 bullets, two knives, two money-counting machines, four computers, three specially
prepared fire extinguishers (for hiding the cash), 11 number plates and false paperwork.

Disastrous times…
I
T has been a disastrous time for lovers of football in England and Spain. Both teams from those soccer crazy nations have had to beat a gloomy retreat after being knocked out early. So all the hopes and dreams of some of the best and most loyal fans in the world have been broken all too soon. It is a tremendous disappointment for many with all the excitement that comes with the knockout stages destined for other teams. For the Spanish it is the end of an era after eight years of dazzling success. Two European Championships and a World Cup is not a bad haul for largely the same group of players. But father time has caught
up with them and root and branch rebuilding is now needed. For England the long wait for glory goes on. But they are already further along the rebuilding road than Spain with some exciting young talent blooded in this tournament. Whatever the future holds one thing is for sure - football is one thing that England and Spain have in common. It is a shame that the opportunity for fans from both those countries to watch each other’s teams and share some banter over a beer and tapa has gone. But on the up side for football lovers, the teams left have been playing some beautiful stuff. It bodes well for one of the best tournaments in recent years.

Botin sticks up for Bank of Spain EMILIO BOTIN, president of Santander Bank, defended Bank of Spain’s role during the crisis. Earlier, the outgoing president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, had heaped responsibility for Spain’s problems on the Bank of Spain. “Whenever the European Commission asked the Spanish authorities how were the banks and how were the savings banks they always said that everything was perfect,” Durao Barroso complained. “I don’t agree with the president’s declarations,” Botin replied.
The supervisor had tried to anticipate the crisis with innovative measures, he insisted. These included the anticyclic provisions required of Spanish banks during the bonanza years, that were designed to help them survive in leaner times. It was less a problem of supervision than the deficient models of corporative and administrative control used by many of the former savings banks. No gas crisis for Spain SPAIN is sitting pretty regarding its gas supply. Russia might have reduced Ukraine’s supply, alleging nonpayment, and depleting the supplies of other clients whose gas has to pass through the region. But unlike Estonia, Finland, Letonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia whose entire supply comes through Ukraine, Spain’s gas comes from various sources, explained the Asociacion Española del Gas (Sedigas). Last year it imported gas from 11 countries and also has six international pipeline connections. Two connect directly with Algeria, two with Portugal and another two with France. Fiftyfour per cent of Spain’s natural gas arrives via pipeline, principally from Algeria. The remaining 46 per cent is liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported in methane tankers that unload at one of Spain’s six functioning regasification plants. Here the LNG is then heated to turn it back into gas before it is piped to users. Spain currently accounts for 36.5 per cent of

onward to other countries,” Sedigas has revealed. The present infrastructure is sufficient to circulate 5.4 billion cubic metres of gas, but the Irun pipeline in the north of Spain will increase this to 7.1 billion cubic metres.

Less money and more margarine SPANISH families spent an average €27,098 last year, 3.7 per cent less than in 2012. There were more eggs and margarine on the daily menu and sales of loose tobacco increased as many smokers started rolling their own. Children received 21 per cent less pocket money from their parents. Holidays, eating out, cinema visits and tickets for cultural events were all reined in last year although outlay on gas, electricity and water bills increased because of higher tariffs. There was also more to pay at the chemists owing to co-payment for medication and families spent more on education. Amongst other things this was due to the steep rise in university students’ annual registration fees. Grants for textbooks,
school transport and lunches were also harder to come by. An official Family Budget Survey by Spain’s Institute of National Statistics (INE) demonstrates that despite the recent improvement to the national economy the results of this progress have yet to filter through to families. Spending fell by 14.5 per cent between 2008 and 2013 and last year’s €27,098 family average is lowest of the crisis years. Families spent 30 per cent less on shoes, clothes and items for the home during these five years while spending on sewing materials and shoe repairs rose as people literally make do and mend. The survey also asked participating families for details of their spending on drugs and prostitution.

OCCASIONALLY we experience sloppy service from demotivated staff. Chances are the boss is out of sight figuring ways to attract new custom as fast as his apathetic employees lose old ones. I explained my car radio wasn’t working. Asking me what make and presuming he would check it out, I identified my car. Drumming his fingers on the counter, clearly thinking some village is looking for its idiot, he replies sarcastically, “No, what radio?” How I kept from dragging
him over the counter I don't know. An optician’s assistant looks at me like she just found me on the bottom of her shoe. “You do realise you will have to pay?” Is there an antidote to cretinous employees in a business environment where
it is near impossible to sack the work-shy, incompetent and downright mutinous? Try the carrot and stick approach. Reconsider the methods by which you pay staff. Tweak it so an element of incentive becomes integral to their livelihood. This could
be a bonus based on turnover or profits. Everyone likes familiarity so why not delegate key members of the staff to waiting upon regulars. Never take employees for granted, involve them as you would if they were partners
or shareholders. In fact, good staff are more important than investors. By the same token it should be pointed out to employees that you encourage clients to report their experience as a customer. By doing so, everyone who uses your business becomes a shareholder. Encourage employees to suggest ways by which their business, which you think of as your business, can be improved. Doing so involves them. They feel your business is as important to them as it is to you. A key element is to find ways to recognise not just individual but team performance. Again, this can be in the form of a bonus, financial reward, time off in lieu or restaurant vouchers. By doing things this way your staff will be as keen as you are to stamp down on the dumb insolent.

Sometimes children don’t need a fancy education or a run of titles after their name to become financially stable; they just need to have a little bit of real interest in something that excites them! Too often children are bored stiff and end up day dreaming their way through secondary school and university - if they make it to higher education. This is a problem. A half-hearted attention to learning is not conducive to nurturing the next Donald Trump or Richard Branson. What kids actually need is to be

Second, postal ballots are not permitted for the community AGM. First you need informed advice from a lawyer not connected with your community. To install a lift, which improves accessibility, you may well find help from revised Article 10 of the new Horizontal Law, which aims to help the
handicapped and persons over 70 years of age.

Previous winners, include two students from Chicago who created a football sock with a built-in pocket for shin guards. Their idea is currently being eyed-up by professional manufacturers. The push behind all this is not just about coming up with a killer business idea, it’s about getting kids excited and thinking about becoming their own boss. Not all students are academic and this type of
education helps gives others the chance to develop skills and perhaps shine in other areas. I personally love this approach to education. The old-fashioned robotic model of learn and regurgitate - that is all too common is Spanish schools - is outdated and inapt. Let’s give our children the opportunity to explore options, get excited about business and most importantly, try to become their own boss. The idea that anyone with a good idea and some hard work can become a success is one that parents and teachers should be promoting to the next generation.

Shedding light on last year’s electricity scandal SPAIN’S Markets and Monopolies regulatory body (CNMC) is investigating Iberdrola for possible price manipulation. The CNMC could not reveal the period in question, sources said, as this was an ongoing case. Neither should opening the investigation be allowed to pre-judge the energy company, they added. If Iberdrola is found to have been involved in ‘fraudulent price manipulation’ the multinational could be fined between €6 million and €60 million under Spain’s Electricity Sector laws. Despite the regulator’s tactful evasion, there is little doubt that the CNMC is interested in the days leading up to the quarterly

However, I can assure him that both the main parties have been asked about making changes to Andalucia’s Urban Planning Law (LOUA). I have also written to anyone that I could think of who might be able to help. The UK parliament cannot help as we are under Spanish Law. The European Parliament cannot help as we are under Spanish law. The Spanish Parliament cannot help as we are under the autonomous rule of Andalucia, and have no fear they have been contacted too. My main reason for writing letters is so that everyone knows about the situation, the stress and heartache that this causes, as well as the financial burden of fighting your case. Plain language I FULLY agree that a European prime minister should speak at least one other language. Where to go? I AM allergic to a lot of medication and therefore have much I need to dispose of. I know this can be left at a chemist or any health centre but I would like to know what happens to this unused medication. Is it passed on to the poor or sent to third world countries? The
same applies to spectacles. Do opticians collect them to be sent to needy people? If there is anyone who knows whether these things are passed on to be used for the good of others I should be most grateful. Much of my unused medication is quite costly and I hate to think of it being dumped whilst many people are dying because it is unobtainable in their country. Closed season MY wife and I drove all the way from Alhaurin to La Cañada, Marbella, specifically to do a spot of shopping. We were disappointed to find the whole complex closed! Another of those annoying local holidays it seems. We weren’t the only ones to be caught out: there were dozens of other folk with shopping funds burning a hole in their pockets. What defies belief is how a nation like Spain can be in such dire straits financially when it’s full of such enterprising traders with

Scam alert GAS men arrived at my villa and I understood I had to have my gas checked out by law. As they seemed to have all the correct paperwork I allowed them in. They immediately removed all four of my gas regulators (two of them were only two years old). They then removed all the hoses and pipe fittings which they soldered back on, and also used copper piping from an old boiler in my garage to run another valve that I was told I needed. I then spoke to my next door neighbour and after being told this was a scam I confronted the six people who got very agitated. Unfortunately I had already paid them €485.13 and they would not refund any of the cash. I called the Guardia but when they arrived they said these people were legal and left. I took photos of their two vehicles and have circulated the registration numbers on Facebook to hopefully warn any other unwary people. Fighting back I READ with interest Mary Goosey’s problems with cancelling her telephone contract. I sympathise as I have had a similar problem with my car insurance since moving from France to Spain. Despite sending several letters by registered mail to the company and the agent, cancelling my health, house and car insurances, it wasn’t until December they got the message. However they have continued to demand payment for insurance on one of my cars with the threat of bailiffs for non-payment. Unfortunately it is like hitting your head against a brick wall and no one seems to respond personally to the countless letters and emails I have sent. OONER or later all those new strange inhabitants of Mojacar brought others in their parade. I especially remember the crew from Brazil. They rented my brother’s big house just 50 metres up the road. The renter was supposed to be a very important international movie mogul, but I never saw him sober once during his stay. He came equipped with an entourage of three unique secretaries. Now I don’t know if they could read, write or take dictation, but one thing they did have in common was they didn’t like wearing clothes and loved each other very much. They were always kissing and hugging and thinking of some sort of excuse to run across the room and embrace the other with long deep kisses and frequent gentle messages. I found their demeanour foreign, but they were from Brazil. They were well protected too by the meanest damn body guard imaginable. A monkey with a very long tail. With that device he could swing from anywhere and traverse great distances in the blink of an eye. When he caught a glimpse of anyone new in the room he’d scream ferociously. If

Meeting my first girls from Brazil! you got too close to the girls he’d hurl himself through the air and try to bite your neck. He had some damn vicious teeth on him too. And if he really hated you he’d toss excrement at you. He didn’t like me as I was a frequent visitor but I soon settled matters with him. Brought up an American footballer, I was quite adept at throwing and pegged him on the chandelier and quite a few times after that in full flight. He soon strayed away from me, which gave me time to improve my Portugese vocabulary and discuss worldly matters with the girls. The girls liked me too, they called me “boy” even though we were about the same age. They used to fight over wearing my baseball cap. Upon one of those serious moments I enquired who was the president of Brazil. They looked at each other in great confusion and consternation.

Diamonds are for dummies… DIAMOND encrusted baby dummies and feeding bottles are now on sale costing tens of thousands of euros. Is that a waste and symbolic that today’s children are being spoilt? Do youngsters get given too much too soon or would it be better if they were made to work for their pocket money?

EVILLE and Anita Hooper, both retired and living in El Rincon, Arboleas, thought it was ridiculous. Neville said: “What’s wrong with using your thumb! I had to clean shoes and do a bit of gardening to earn my pocket money. I had to help out on my dad’s allotment.” Anita said: “I had to earn my pocket money as well, I used to have to do the washing up after tea.”

I also helped the milkman on his round at weekends. I don’t think kids today have the same opportunity to earn extra money like we did. The UK Tax Residence Test The UK’s Statutory Residence Test which came into effect in April 2013 was a welcome development after the old system and provides much more certainty. However for more complicated cases it can still be complex and it is important to understand the detail of the test. The test is a definite process to determine your UK residence status for income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax purposes. All British expatriates need to be aware of how it applies to them. It is possible for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to determine that you are UK resident, even though you believe you are resident in Spain. To assess your residence status, you need to work through the following three tests in order. If you are non-UK resident under the first test, the other two will not apply. Whether you are an ‘arriver’ or ‘leaver’ plays an important part, and this is based on your residence status
UK in any of the previous three UK tax years, and are present for fewer than 46 days in the current year. • You were resident in one or more of the previous three years, and present for fewer than 16 days in the current year. • You work overseas full time, subject to conditions. The more ties you have with the UK, the less time you can spend onshore without becoming UK resident. The test outlines circumstances in which an individual may be able to claim split year treatment. The UK does have a double tax
treaty with Spain, but it does not provide as much protection as you may think. It is possible to be tax resident in the UK even if you have been paying taxes in Spain. For peace of mind about your tax residency status, taxes you should be paying and where and the best tax planning for your situation, speak to a professional adviser who understands the intricacies of both UK and Spanish tax law and how the two interact. Piers Morgan set to sign new ITV Life Stories contract Richard Shanley

PIERS MORGAN will reportedly sign a new deal with ITV when his current two-year contract expires at the end of June. The TV presenter will sign a non-exclusive deal with the broadcaster, The Sun reports. It is claimed Morgan will host another six episodes of his Life Stories interview series, in addition to a new factual series. There have been 69 episodes of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories spread over 11 series since 2009. Interviewees have included the likes of celebrities Sharon Osbourne, Katie Price, Simon Cowell, Elton John and Dannii Minogue, as well as politicians

Morgan has been tipped to return to ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent in 2015 as a replacement for David Walliams. being ‘unemployed.’ EastEnders star Shane Richie will host a new BBC game show called Decimate. The actor, who plays Walford’s Alfie Moon, will lead the new show which starts filming in August and launches in the autumn. Decimate will see contestants battling to maintain a £20,000 (€24,900) cash prize by
answering a number of questions. If the participants answer questions incorrectly, the pot will be decimated by 10 per cent, Broadcast reports. Series commissioning editor Pam Cavannagh said: “It has huge play along and a great team dynamic that we know our audience have come to love and enjoy, and with Shane hosting, it is a great addition to our daytime quiz line-up.” Richie previously hosted BBC One game show Reflex, which launched earlier this year. Sky1 has commissioned an eight-part holiday documentary series called The Sun Set. The 60-minute programme will follow a variety of families as they holiday together in a luxurious
European villa complex rigged with cameras. Each episode will follow a new set of British and Irish families. Director of Sky1 Adam MacDonald said: “Families in all their diversity are central to what we’re doing on Sky1. The annual family holiday is always one to remember - with moments of joy, laughter, playfulness and often, sheer embarrassment, so we can’t wait for our customers to slap on the factor 30 and come join us.” The Sun Set will air at 8pm on a weeknight in an attempt to draw more viewers to the channel at this time. A descent to hell… T HE only thing going to stop young Muslim extremists from joining groups of murdering Jihadists is for their ‘religious’ leaders to cease convincing them they will enter the realms of paradise as a reward for their efforts. If they could only be taught that their crimes against humanity would put them on an inescapable spiral in the opposite direction you can bet their enlistments to these extremists’ organisations would fall to just about zero. But they won’t will they? Irrespective of whether these leaders fall into the ‘hate preacher’ category or not, I have never heard of one so called ‘moderate’ come out and put forward an alternate theory. The reason for this of course is that whatever their religious ideals, they all believe this Shangri-La hereafter ‘reward’ actually does exist. This of course, is the whole fundamental difference between decent caring Christians and the extremism of Islam. Christians believe that the more peaceful and blame free life you lead, the more chance you have of entering paradise, unfortunately these zealots believe exactly the opposite. Devout Christians truly do believe someone did actually return from the dead and teach them this was indeed the case. (Personally I retain an open mind!) All the Muslim world has is their flesh and blood leaders, who have no

proof whatsoever their theories are correct. I find that all a bit sad. Such a waste of young lives to be told they must maim, kill and die horrible deaths to achieve happiness. No, it is the religious leaders who have all this misery, maiming and destruction on their consciences. Odd that you don’t see many of them in the front line or strapped up to suicide bombs; does this mean they don’t actually want to finish up in Shangri La? Mmm. Do I detect the whiff of hypocrisy? Well the little darlings are now on their THREE MONTH vacation. I’m watching two of mine lying on the couch. They have now been there over a half an hour and have so far not spoken a word to each other! I’ll tell you one thing mobiles have brought us, lots of blessed peace and quiet. Be thankful for small mercies. I see police are now preparing a claim that Leonard Rossiter was in a gang of sex attackers working on the set of a BBC drama in 1968. Rossiter of course died in 1984. As much as I sympathise with these young ladies

REGARDING the Jolie/Hague anti-rape escapade (Leapy, Issue 1511). How in the blue blazes are they going to action this? Is someone going into darkest Africa or Islamic controlled countries to shout stop or we will prosecute you? We left South Africa to get away from crime, greed and corruption and the news of some demon raping babies because a so called witch doctor told them to do so to get rid of AIDS. The UK people need a swift kick up the backside. I am an outsider looking in and I can see there could be a lot of problems if the government of the day keeps on sticking its head in the ground, to say nothing of the ‘political correctness’ that it pushes. As the weather hots up for summer, tips to combat the high temperatures AS the weather hots up, health officials have launched their annual plan to prevent the effects of high temperature which will stay in place until September 15. The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality offers their top tips: Drink water or liquids often regardless of physical activity undertaken. Do not overindulge in drinks with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar, as they can lose more body fluid. Legionnaire’s affects baby’s birth PREGNANT women have been warned against using a specific type of home birthing pool after a baby became infected with Legionnaire’s disease. It comes as a baby in the UK remains in intensive care in hospital with the disease. Samples taken from the heated pool, which has built-in filters that recirculate water and can be filled two weeks before the birth, confirmed the presence of the bacteria. It is the first reported case of Legionnaire’s disease linked to a birthing pool in England, according to Public Health England (PHE). Legionnaires is a serious lung infection giving symptoms including high fever, muscle pain and chills and is usually caught by breathing in small droplets of contaminated water.

Fried rice: mouthwatering comfort food WHILE it could be a bold statement to say that everyone loves fried rice, there are countless delicious recipes in many countries around the world. But there are countless variations, including chaulafan (Ecuador), omurice (Japan), sinangag (Philippines) and Bai cha (Cambodia). Making fried rice is not rocket science. But getting it just right takes a little know-how. For a tasty chewy-tender texture, it is preferable to use cold leftover cooked rice. Leaving the rice in the fridge overnight will help the grains firm up, thus considerably reducing the chances of the rice turning out mushy. It is not

tend to clump together. Some believe all the flavour should actually come from the stir-fried ingredients, but it all comes down to personal preference. For this you will need a bottle of sparkling rose wine or a decent cava, one cup of club soda, a litre of pink grapefruit juice and a bottle of dry vermouth. Once you have all the ingredients together just pour them into a large bowl to taste and decorate with seasonal fruit.
SUMMER PUNCHES: Refreshingly easy to make Red sangria. Everyone is familiar with sangria but
here is an extra easy way to prepare it: get a bottle of wine and another of club soda or lemonade and pour into a bowl, then get some Cointreau or Triple Sec and add to taste. The amount of each ingredient can vary but you will need raspberries, orange juice, lemon juice, pineapple juice and a bottle of rum.

Heliport Albox em WORK has been completed on the construction of the Albox heliport. This new service for Albox and the surrounding area will soon be fully operational for emergency cases. The heliport was constructed by Incoc, after Albox Town Hall awarded the land to the Health Council of the Junta de Andalucia regional government. The mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, has welcomed the new health infrastructure, claiming that “the heliport will be an alternative service to the residents of our town and surrounding towns, as well as for citizens who, directly or indirectly become involved in an emergency, for example, in a traffic

Safety first… HELLO and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last week I was asked by the editor of this newspaper to write a ‘soundbite’ for the EWN website. This I did with pleasure! The piece was about how it is possible to access new iPhones within five seconds. My solution was simple, as are most of my solutions, and that was to ensure that no-one can get their hands on your precious and expensive phone. This got me thinking about security in general but, as always, with a techno twist. Having done my fair share of ethical cracking (not hacking - Americans always get it wrong!). I can tell you that it isn’t as easy as the TV would have you believe. The standard methods include: Going through a dictionary to find a password, starting with ‘password,’ then ‘123,’ then next top 98 passwords before using the rest of the dictionary. The next level is to follow a sequence of generated letters / numbers and symbols starting with ‘a,’ A’ … ‘Z,’ then ‘aa’ … ‘ZZ’ excluding all the previous passwords. This is time consuming and really tedious and very few people’s information is worth that much effort. After a great deal of research on the subject, I found a much easier way, and

The next most popular is ‘social engineering’ something that the manipulative have been doing for hundreds of years. An easy example is ‘Phishing.’ You get an email telling you that your bank account has been compromised and that they need information to ensure that you are who you claim to be! Look for things that are wrong such as, ‘www’ is different from the one you normally see or there is a notice at the bottom, in tiny writing, saying that it isn’t from the authorised company (they can then state in court that you were told but still chose to give them your information). La Pequeñica undergoes restoration work THE prayers of thousands of faithful Albojenses have finally been answered. Restoration work has begun on the image of the Virgin del Saliente, the patron saint of the town. The tiny figure has had for years a high degree of deterioration that was a cause for concern for both the Brotherhood of the Sanctuary and the Bishop of Almeria. The decision has been made to have the image restored by a recognised restorer from Arboleas, meaning that ‘La
Pequeñica’ does not have to leave the sanctuary of the monastery, its home for several centuries, to be restored. Responsible for carrying out the restoration is Joaquin Gilabert Lopez. At 42 years of age, he has worked for institutions such as the Andalucian Historical Heritage Institute and the Foundation of the Museo Picasso in Malaga. The fact that he is a resident of the Almanzora Valley will make him aware of the religious importance and
sentiments of the people towards the Virgin while carrying out this important and responsible work. On the horizon are two important dates, the pilgrimage next September as a date for the completion of the restoration and 2015, the year in which the Virgin will descend into the town of Albox, a tradition that takes place every five years. If there are no unexpected mishaps, La Pequeñica will visit the town looking her best for decades.

Hotel industry rejects plans to regulate private rentals
Light at the end of the tunnel THE construction sector in Spain will hit rock bottom in 2014. As stated by the Construction Technological Institute of Catalonia (ITeC) in their latest Euroconstruct report, the sector will start to slowly recover in 2015. Its reactivation will reportedly accelerate in the next few years, with an estimated 3.4 per cent increase by 2016. Nevertheless, it is not expected to reach similar figures seen in other European countries for at least five more years. Euroconstruct forecasts house constructions will increase by 5 per cent in 2015 and 8 per cent in 2016. It also predicts 40,000 new homes will be built in the second half of 2014, 6,000 more than in 2013, and more than 50,000 in 2015. Non-residential building construction will react ‘more slowly,’ reported Euroconstruct. It will purportedly start growing in 2016 (3 per cent).

THE Madrid hotel industry categorically rejected the local government’s intention to regulate 8,000 private rentals. The Corporate Association for Tourism Promotion (CATP) of Madrid, encompassing several hotel business associations and the Madrid Association of Travel Agencies have requested Ignacio Gonzalez, President of the Community of Madrid, to refrain from imposing control measures. As an alternative, they have suggested toughening the requirements included in an already drafted bill which is still to be passed. The bill was submitted to the Advisory Council in late May and it is very likely that it will be green-lit. According to the CATP, the bill on private rentals of the Community of Madrid is ‘clearly permissive.’ It estimates that the number of private rentals could triple, should the bill be passed. Furthermore, the CATP believes that passing the bill could result in the disappearance of 3,000 jobs in the hotel industry. “It is an already existing phenomenon. We can’t prohibit it, but we can regulate it,” said Carmen Gonzalez, of the Employment, Tourism and Culture Ministry. If private rentals were regulated by law, “we could guarantee tourists quality accommodations and the respect for their consumer rights.” The bill defines private rentals as whole flats and houses tourists can rent.

Easy to grow plants as mosquito repellents NOW that summer is here and we are all outside a lot more, the problem of what to do about mosquitoes comes up again. Inside we can use those electrical thingies and they are quite efficient but what to do outside? Plant some anti-mosquito plants of course - here are some plants which are known for their mosquito repelling properties. Citronella is one of the most common ingredients in mosquito repellents that can be bought in the shops, so why not use it in its natural state - just make sure you get Cymbopogon nardus or Cymbopogon winterianus as they are the most efficient. Horsemint is also quite efficient at repelling the vampire insects, if you go to a garden centre ask for Mentha longifolia. Catnip (Nepeta cataria) can also be very effective at keeping the mosquito population away from your garden, just make sure to plant it somewhere cats can’t get at it, as it drives them mad!

COPROPHAGIA, to give the proper name to the condition where dogs eat faeces, is a natural form of behaviour which most dogs learn from puppyhood when their mother will clean up after them. It happens more in
puppies which come from rescue kennels and pet shops. It can also be started by poor housetraining where owners do not clean up after the pup. Boredom is another cause. Dogs that spend long periods alone in the garden or in kennels can develop this habit. In kennels, dogs will copy other dogs doing it. Don’t rub a dog’s nose in its excrement. This only teaches dogs to eat the evidence to avoid punishment. Don’t shout or chase the dog away. It will only learn to eat faster. Do remove the faeces,
especially if you live in a warm climate, for they encourage mosquitoes. You can also treat faeces with Tabasco or peppers. The dog will not find that taste very rewarding. It could be the dog is just hungry. Split the daily food ration into several portions and feed the dog three or four times a day with a higher fibre content. Alternatively, the dog could have a health problem. There is a condition called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, where a lack of enzymes in the
pancreas will result in dogs being ravenously hungry. Dogs suffering from this will eat anything. Although the eating of faeces is absolutely repellent to humans, the smell and texture is attractive to dogs. Dogs have a different palate to our own. If all else fails, only allow the dog off lead with a muzzle. Taste is not such an important sense to dogs, despite claims to the contrary. Strong weeke THE Supermotoland race team were in Talavera La Real, Badajoz, over the weekend for the second round of the Spanish Supermoto championship with its two riders Anthony and Mat Ford-Dunn. Going into the weekend, both brothers were holding third position in their championship classes and they wasted no time at all in practice to get the best settings from their Advance Moves International Removals sponsored race bikes. When it came to qualifying, Anthony put himself on the first row of the grid, in second position for the Premier SM open class, whilst older brother

Mat managed to go one better in the SM35 Master class and found himself in a comfortable Pole position for the race. Anthony was first to race, and in the first of his three races he was in third position and fighting for the lead with Angel Grau and reigning Spanish Champion Francesco Cucharrera. The three were having a tremendous battle with no quarter given when a small mistake from Cucharrera saw him crash in the dirt section leaving Anthony nowhere to go but into Cucha’s fallen bike and both riders were all of a sudden on the deck. nd for Supermotoland engine still running he was able to restart relatively quickly and set about chasing down the leader. Anthony’s pace was incredible but he just didn’t have enough time left in the race to catch and pass Angel Grau and ended up second at the flag. The second SM open race once again saw the same three riders in a desperate battle for the lead but this time it was Angel Grau’s turn to make a small error that saw him slide off his bike as he accelerated onto the start finish straight. Anthony made the pass and set after Cucha who had opened a small gap. Despite closing the gap Anthony just wasn’t quite able to make the pass and finished second behind Cucha. The last race of the day saw
Cucha and Anthony locked in a race long battle for the lead and despite breaking the lap record Anthony was unable to pass the Reigning Spanish Champion and once again finished a very close second. The day’s results put Anthony in second position on the podium, just missing out on the overall win by one point to Cucha. The result had elevated his position in the Spanish championship to second overall and the team now have until the third round of the Spanish championship on July 19 in Villarcayo, Burgos to find a little more power from Anthony’s bike to get him on terms with Cucha. Older Brother Mat was in dominant form in both of the SM35 Master races and he turned his pole position into two race wins and as well as
standing on the top step of the podium at the end of the days racing, he had also elevated himself from third to first position in the championship and with a comfortable lead. Competition is fierce in the Master class and once again Mat will be refining his race bike before both brothers race again. Race reports and videos can be seen at the team’s website

Ibiza Cupster is radically open…. IT is certainly an unusual look. Seat’s Ibiza Cupstar prototype captures the imagination with a design that is as emotional as it is dynamic according to the Volkswagen owned manufacturer. Seat Design has created a surprising reinterpretation for the Ibiza Cupster: While the body shell is largely the same as that of the series-production model Ibiza up to the shoulder line, everything above it is radically open. The two-seater fun car has no roof whatsoever; and even the classic front windscreen has given way to a low, wraparound strip of glass. Starting tomorrow we have the three-day UK Athletics Championships in Birmingham, on Saturday South Africa play Scotland at rugby and on Sunday, Spain’s super-biker Marc Marquez will be seeking to win his eighth MotoGP victory of the season in Assen, Holland. FIFA WORLD CUP England and holders Spain (for whom Andreas Iniesta won his 100th cap) were eliminated at the group stage. Not good - but England boss Roy Hodgson is staying on - it’s Euro 2016 next. Lionel Messi has already scored two terrific goals with more to come! His last-kick beauty beat Iran 1-0 to put Argentina into the last 16 where they join Belgium, Brazil, Germany, France, Holland, Costa Rica, possibly Algeria and others. The USA, lucky Portugal and Italy were also hoping to proceed. The knockout stage
starts this weekend. Last Saturday, Jerome Boateng (Germany) played against his brother Kevin Prince (Ghana) in a thrilling 2-2 draw which saw Miroslav Klose score a record equalling 15th World Cup final goal for the Germans. Marina Phoenix Golf Society THE individual competition at Marina Phoenix on Monday couldn’t have been closer with the first three players scoring 39 points separated by countback. Colin King was first from Ali Mahmud in second and Eddie Vaughan was third. The ladies division was won by Isobel Jones (35), Maxine Mayhew (34) and Linda King (33) third. Two’s prizes were won by Helen Kelly and Ali Mahmud. Thursday’s team game was ‘Best two to count’ and a team of two Spaniards and a Yorkshireman blitzed the course scoring 19 points better than par. First were José Ramon, Marcos Caparros and Jim Budd on 91 points, Ali Mahmud, Brian Couper and Margaret Budd (78), on countback from Norrie Westbrook, Linda King and Nadie Wass (78). Nearest the pin on the 17th was won by Carole Donoghue. Marina Phoenix play Mondays (individual) and Thursdays (team game). Here comes Summer
ON Tuesday, the Valle del Este Golf Society played a Texas scramble and the winning team with a net 58.9 were Patrick Vickery, Bill Foster, Jim Firth and Harry Wilson. The individual stableford on Friday was won by Paul Sedge with 37 points playing off four. In second place, Martin DeBruin with 34 points cutting his handicap to 19 in his 84th year, third was Ian Jones with 32 points. Nearest the pin were Malcolm Nicholls on 14th and Dick Hull on the 8th. On Saturday we will be playing the Ryder Cup match against the Spanish members at Valle del Este in aid of Asprodalba charity.
THE chairman’s granddaughter, Summer Kratzke, enjoyed her first taste of golf in Spain when she joined the Villaricos Golf Society for a singles stableford at Aguilon golf course earlier this month. The weather was not typical Spanish, however, with a lot of cloud and a chill wind and with new tee settings, the scoring was not up to the usual standard. Although everyone, Summer included, enjoyed the day. The winner of Division 1 was Mick Gardner with a score of 31 points, in second place was Mike Oulton with 30 points. Cortijo Grande WEDNESDAY June 18 and there were two divisions for the Cortijo Grande competition. The winner of the first division with 39 points was Bob Winter and second with 36 was Mike Picken. The second division winner with 39 was David Bezer and second with 32was Lilly Peper. Ball sweep winner was Mike Picken. On Sunday there was only one division but some good scores required to win. Winner with 39 points was Mike Picken and second with 37 was Philip Dunne, with 36 points needed by David Hardy for third. Visitors and guests are welcome at Cortijo.
