Coronation Day for new King of Spain
S
PAIN is set to have a new king today (Thursday). Crown Prince Felipe, 46, (pictured with his daughters) was due to be enthroned as the new King of Spain at 10.30am. In what has been planned as an austere and low-key ceremony, in keeping with the country’s frugal stance amidst the economic crisis, he will be crowned without a religious ceremony. No foreign dignitaries have been invited. The king-in-waiting himself had reportedly requested that his proclamation be a simple affair. Nevertheless, a military procession has been scheduled in front of Spanish politicians, and the new king and queen are expected to present themselves to the public from the Royal Palace’s balcony in Madrid. Prince Felipe will ascend to the Spanish throne following the unexpected abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos. Juan Carlos’s coronation took place in 1975 after Franco’s death. The abdication sparked calls throughout the country for a referendum on the future of Spain’s monarchy and for a new republic to be established.
Demonstrations with tens of thousands of people taking part were staged in cities across Spain, calling for a public debate on the future of the monarchy, with republican
organisations to the fore. Others have frowned on the low-key coronation, instead wanting more pomp and ceremony, saying it would give the country a boost.

Cabo de Gata: One of natural wonders THE Cabo de Gata Natural Park of Nijar in Almeria has been proclaimed one of the seven natural wonders of Spain. In a national competition organised by Allianz Global Assistance which attracted 80,000 votes and 5,000 tweets, the park claimed third place. Gaztelugatxe, in Vizcaya was the winner, followed by the Natural Park of Somiedo, in Asturias. Behind Cabo de Gata were Las Medulas in Leon, the Natural Park of Las Lagunas de Ruidera, Fuente De in Cantabria and the seventh wonder was claimed by A
Praia das Catedrais in Lugo. It is worth noting that the Cabo de Gata finished ahead of DoĂąana National Park and Mount Teide in Tenerife and is the only entrant in the whole of Andalucia to finish in the top seven. The name of Cabo de Gata has Phoenician origin, the volcanic area was abundant in the semi precious stone Agate, and in the Middle Ages was dubbed as Cape Agate. Off duty officer to the rescue AN off duty Guardia Civil officer was on the spot to arrest an individual following a commotion in a Huercal-Overa supermarket. The officer was out shopping when he noticed an argument at the checkouts and a struggle between three people, one of them screaming that they had just stolen their wallet.
The Guardia Civil officer quickly went to the checkout, while two of those involved in the melee tried hurriedly to leave the store, leaving behind their victim. The officer went after the attackers and managed to pin down one of the suspects in the robbery before he could leave the premises. This action also led to the
recovery of the wallet that had just been stolen from the victim. On duty officers arrived at the scene and arrested a 45-yearold man from Alicante for a crime of robbery with violence. The 72-year-old victim was taken to a nearby health centre for treatment to slight injuries. Meanwhile, police are searching for the second man.

THE summer solstice happens when the tilt of the earth, in either the northern or southern hemisphere, is most inclined towards the sun. Solstices happen twice every year and this year the summer solstice will happen on June 21. At exactly 10.51am the sun will reach its highest position in the sky as seen from either the North or South Pole. In Spain this means ‘La Noche de San Juan’ (the Night of San Juan) which is a pagan festivity which principal rite consists of building a bonfire in order to give the sun more intensity, but in reality means that entire villages will spend the night on the beach having a party, setting off fireworks and barbecuing

A POWER CUT left the people of Adra without electricity last week. The power cut occured shortly after midnight and affected a large area, leaving some homes without electricity for more than an hour and a half.
Life savers A TOTAL of 160 Guardia Civil officers took part in a life saving course in Almeria City. The agents were taught resuscitation techniques for heart attack victims and treatment of wounds among other things.

Fundraising charity FACE are ‘Wheelie’ good to M.A.C.S. FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone), the leading fundraising charity in the Almanzora Valley, were ‘Wheelie’ good recently. They donated an electric wheelchair, valued around €1,500 and a cheque for €1,000 to MACS, (Mojacar Area Cancer Support). MACS is a fully registered charity that provides help, care and support for people of any nationality suffering cancer related disorders.
Volunteers are on hand to help with hospital visits, organise translations of hospital papers, and even assist with shopping. The group also has access to professionally qualified nurses and carers. Although the MACS name incorporates the town of Mojacar in its title, it does in fact provide services throughout the lower Almanzora Valley, with residents in El Chopo, Limaria, Albox, Arboleas

and Los Carrascos all receiving assistance since MACS was first established. Over recent years MACS has spread its wings. It has now got three charity shops, in Albox, Turre and Mojacar and operates a cancer drop in centre at its Mojacar premises. The charity is hoping to build up enough funds, eventually, not only through these charity shops, but through generous donations from
various individuals, groups and organisations like FACE, so at some time in the future it will be able to open and run a hospice. Right from its inception FACE has supported MACS. On this occasion the electric wheelchair donated will be used at the MACS drop-in centre in Mojacar. The additional €1,000 will go towards buying equipment that will be useful to cancer sufferers.
Although it is nice to give money away, FACE do work hard to raise funds in their own right, and of course they are also very grateful to groups or individuals that make donations. On July 4 they will be operating their own Summer Night Market from 7pm at the Bar Kubatin, under the Hostel Meson in Arboleas. Another 29 homes face threat of demolition NEW information is emerging about more court cases relating to houses in the Partaloa area of Almeria. In a week which has seen a demolition order placed on a property belonging to a Spanish family on the outskirts of Pechina, a further 29 houses in the area of Retamar are under threat of demolition. The latest case, which began seven years ago, is a criminal case relating to an alleged planning crime against the promoter of the houses as well as corruption charges against a series of other individuals and is pending a hearing in Criminal Court number 2 in Almeria. The company, Residencial Retamar S.L. is also cited in the case. The victims, third party purchasers in good faith, could find themselves without a house and without compensation if the accused are convicted. Speaking on behalf of homeowners association AUAN, president Maura Hillen said: “It is mostly British and Belgians in Retamar. The problem, as we have previously said, is that the
AUAN: Continue to fight the good fight. proceedings are not registered in the Property Register and therefore it is possible the houses have changed hands whilst this case has been going on. At the moment it is the Belgians who are buying.” In this particular case the State Prosecutor has already asked that the victims are offered the opportunity to take part in the case to defend their interests. Mrs Hillen said: “I don’t know if homeowners are taking part in this
case, but it is not uncommon to find that the homeowner cannot be contacted, or they do not really understand the procedure and assume that merely attending court in response to the initial summons and signing some papers is sufficient, but this is not the case.” An abogado and a procurator must be nominated for representation, otherwise, people will not be informed when the case goes to trial.

Mojacar visit MEMBERS of Mojacar Town Hall called into the Parador Hotel on Monday to present ‘Destination Seron,’ an initiative aimed at attracting tourists to the interior of the province.
Moore surpassed last year’s effort when Phil Elam and Geoff Hebb finished sixth in the same competition. The Ford Golf Leagues are a year long competition, running from April to April each year and are open to all golf societies throughout Spain that meet the necessary criteria. Throughout the season each society plays a series of qualifying competitions, at the end of which, the top two or four players (depending on the size of the society) go on to represent their society in the Ford Leagues Regional Finals. This year the Regional Finals were held in May at Las Colinas in Torrevieja (Alicante). The top 16 pairs from all the regional finals across the country then went on to compete in the Grand Finals, which were held at La Sella, Denia (Valencia) on the weekend of June 78. After four rounds of matchplay over two days, Tony and Terry emerged as the winners. An amazing and important triumph in the world of amateur golf here in Spain with a tournament that has an initial field of

The Forum Golf Society was set up by Phil Elam in January 2008 with a view to giving local golfers the option of playing more organised golf at courses both local and a little further afield, with discounted costs being negotiated by virtue of block booking around 30 to 40 green fees together. The society attracted 150 members in the first year and has gone from strength to strength, recently welcoming member number 378. They play a variety of different types of
competition, individual, pairs and team events, and are also in involved with the Almeria Golf League, coming third in their first season, second in their second season and winning it in the last two years. Additionally, the society organises quiz nights and other social evenings for members, and also arrange golfing breaks for members and partners a couple of times a year.

Campaign to eradicate bugs THE town hall in Huercal-Overa has launched a campaign to eradicate a plague of cochineal bugs, affecting the prickly pears (chumberas) of the entire municipality. This environmental disaster is not only affecting the prickly pear, killing them off and causing their disappearance, but is also gaining notoriety for the annoying effects it is causing the population.The presence at night of microscopic mosquitoes (now nicknamed ‘flying teeth’) are invading properties in large quantities at night, attracted by the lights. On top of this, is the presence of other insects that are attracted to the state of decomposition of the prickly pear, leading to sources of infection. “Owners of land on which there are prickly pears have a duty to cut off the affected plants and bury them,” explained councillor for the Environment, Manuel Buitrago. Adding further advice, the councillor highlighted the importance of burning the plants and not depositing them in containers as the nymphs live for a long time and can reach other areas during transportation.
AFFECTED: The Almeria landscape has been blighted by this pest. If the cactus pads are affected with small, scattered cottony masses, the advice is to remove them with a stiff brush and soapy water. Subsequently, continued treatment with plant protection products containing the active ingredient chlorpyrifos is recommended to avoid having to cut them down. The area councillor has also stated it is “the duty of all citizens to preserve and maintain the natural environment and agriculture of the municipality.” The town hall has launched this campaign to try to eradicate this pest.

Storm aid THE town hall of Arboleas is to receive €400,000 in aid for repairs to damage caused by the storm of September 2012. The finance has been limited to 50 per cent of the costs by the state with the town hall supplying the extra funds for the works.

Rain affects charity concert
WITH a star studded line up, it was advertised as possibly the best open air concert ever held in La Alfoquia. The charity concert aimed at raising funds for two local schools included a Queen tribute act, Errol Ross and Queen Brit, a Michael Buble and Rod Stewart tribute act and more.
However, after all the hard work of the many volunteers who spent hours getting the concert ready, the first significant rainfall this year arrived, just as the first patrons came into the square. The first concern was the safety of the artists as all the electrical equipment had been set up on the outside stage, together
with all the stage lighting. With true British bulldog spirit all the equipment was moved and reinstalled inside the RENFE building, together with the hundreds of outside chairs, and so with a small delay the concert took place. Refunds were given to those who did not wish to see the concert inside, and what a night it was, with all the artists giving possibly the best performances of their lives to ensure that the patrons who remained, and they were in the hundreds had a night they will remember for a long long while. Despite the weather and refunds made, it was unanimously agreed to donate €800 to the local schools of La Alfoquia and Zurgena, even though the night itself made a considerable loss. However due to criticism of the event by members of a local forum, it has been decided to hold all future fundraising events in the Bar La Union.This way the organisers can control the number of patrons, the only drawback to this decision is instead of a number of artists appearing to give everybody a wonderful evening they will be limited to one act. The artist appearing on these nights will be of the highest calibre and they hope everybody who attends will have a great evening, look out for the advertisements for these nights in the Euro Weekly News.

Police arrest 2 international fugitives NATIONAL POLICE in Vicar have arrested two international fugitives, from Romania and Slovakia. The Romanian detainee has had a search and arrest warrant on him since 2004 when he cut down 58 trees in a public forest in Poiana Stampei Suceava, he is wanted for environmental crimes and the robbery of the trees from the state. The Slovakian man, arrested in Almeria capital, is wanted by the authorities in his country in connection with debt settlement and financial crimes. National Police in Vicar have detained a man, 31, who has a European search and arrest warrant out on him for the robbery of 58 trees - he has a prison sentence of three years waiting for him in Romania. He will be extradited as soon as all the relevant paperwork has been
presented to the Spanish courts. The other detainee is a man of 53 who also has a European search and arrest warrant in his name for financial crimes; he failed to pay back loans taken out in his name. There is a possible sentence of five years in prison waiting for him when he gets back to Slovakia. Both men were located and arrested thanks to the collaboration between the National Police and Interpol, which got in touch about the possibility of the men being in the Almeria region. The National Police started to look for them on June 12 and located and arrested them by June 16. The National Police keep in touch on a regular basis with all the international authorities not just to find Spanish fugitives in foreign countries, but to reciprocate and find other nation’s fugitives in Spain.
Medication too expensive ONE out of four Spanish patients stops taking medication for economic reasons. This is the main conclusion reached by a survey carried out by the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (semFYC). According to the survey, 11.2 per cent of patients stopped taking or could barely afford antihypertensive drugs, used to treat high blood pressure, while 9.2 per cent of them stopped taking lipid-lowering drugs, which help to control elevated levels of lipids in patients with hyperlipidemia. Josep Basora, head of the semFYC, said that these drugs are prescribed to patients at risk of cardiovascular disease and therefore necessary. The economic crisis has also affected patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, chronic bronchitis and those taking
antibiotics, antidepressants, antiplatelet drugs and antipsychotics. According to Basora, the Royal Decree - Law of Sustainability of the Health System resulted in 456 drugs being defunded. Some of these include stomach protectors and flu
medication. Seventy seven per cent of the 1,655 physicians who participated in the survey believe that some drugs should be financed, including laxatives (50.9 per cent), mucolytics (30.5 per cent) and antacids (20 per cent).

Darlings and digs WITH the help of her experienced backstage team from the Indalo Players, Janet Mills has successfully brought together two, one-act plays to the Kimrick stage, in her first role as director. She made a really good job staging ‘Darlings You Were Wonderful’ and ‘Theatrical Digs’ with her experienced actresses Jane Read, Val Carrington, Sandra Marriott, Sue Osman, Chris Risbey and Dorcas Mann. In the first play, the women gave excellent and very convincing performances as the Amazon Acting Group in their disastrous play. They displayed emotion, passion and hatred, with a bit of humour thrown in. The set, amongst many other things, was designed by Janet and she put together some

In the second play, ‘Theatrical Digs’, two actresses, Sue Osman and Val Carrington, one glamourous and bejewelled and the other an eccentric Hyacinth Bucket type, compete for the same part in a film; neither of them get it. Janet had two expert engineers, Steve Fear and Brian Allinson, to provide the very important lighting and sound effects
which create the atmosphere for anything necessary from an aircraft taking off to seagulls and sun on the beach, with a few Tannoy voice-overs thrown in. The curtain calls were as entertaining as the rest of the show and demonstrated that Janet has a style of directing all her own. Perhaps with the encouraging comments that came from the first night, she may be tempted to do it again.

RETIREMENT: Almost half of Spaniards have no retirement plan.
Working after 65 ONE out of three Spaniards think they will continue working after 65, according to a study by the insurance company Aegon. Only 52 per cent of them think that they will stop working after reaching the retirement age. A small percentage (8 per cent) of Spain’s working population hope they will continue leading a comfortable lifestyle after retiring.
This number contrasts with China’s 41 per cent and India’s 37 per cent. The study also reveals that 72 per cent of Spaniards think that pensions in the future will be worse. However, most people do not think they will need their family’s economic support when they reach retirement age. Only young people between 18 and 24
years of age do think they will need some sort of support. In addition, Aegon discovered that almost half of Spain’s population (48 per cent) have no retirement plan. Most people (69 per cent) believe that the lack of economic resources is the main obstacle when it comes to planning for the future.

Brit’s killer jailed for just 3 years A MALAGA court has jailed the Spanish killer of father of three, Stephen Mallon, for just three years after finding him guilty of manslaughter. Mr Mallon died during a bar brawl which also left his sons with severe injuries. According to local witnesses, the incident started over a girl who used to date one of the accused, outside a disco-bar called La Estrella in the Axarquia village of Cómpeta. Stephen Mallon was subsequently dazed when a beer bottle was smashed over his head. After being hit, he fell against a terrace balcony before being pushed from a 13ft ledge
to the ground. The Scottish holidaymaker, 49, died 11 days later due to severe bleeding on the brain suffered during the bar brawl. “During the fight, all the defendants attacked the injured Brits with the intention of physically harming them,” State Prosecutor Cecilia Solana told the court. “All the defendants were willing participants. The wronged Brits could only defend themselves against the blows they received.” Mr Mallon’s sons said they were attacked by more than 40 men (of which only 15 took the stand as defendants) armed with belts, irons bars and flower pots.
Both suffered broken bones. The defendants claim the tourists were the aggressors, provoking the ‘fight’ when one of the twins danced with the girlfriend of one of the men. Two men were found guilty of assault with dangerous weapons, but in Spain prison sentences of two years or less are normally suspended for first time offenders who pay compensation orders. The Spanish Judge also ordered the main accused, Jose Jimenez Martin to compensate Mr Mallon’s three children with €90,000 (£72,000) each and his hairdresser widow Teresa with €120,000 (£96,000).

MEDITERRANEAN SEA: Species in danger.
Med more acidic MEDITERRANEAN species are in danger because of higher temperatures and higher CO2 levels in the water. This is one of the alarming conclusions reached by a MedSea study carried out by researchers from more than a dozen countries, including Spain, said the Science and Environmental Technology Institute (ICTA) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. MedSea, a project founded by the European Commission, aims at studying the ecologic and economic impacts of acidification and warming. It also seeks to predict climatic, chemical and socioeconomical changes in the Mediterranean.
Water acidity has increased 10 per cent since 1995 and it is estimated it will reach 30 per cent by 2050. This could negatively impact tourism in coastal cities and their economies. “The ocean absorbs one fourth of anthropogenic contamination,” said Patricia Ziveria, an ICTA researcher. “Fast climate change threatens species characteristic to the Mediterranean,” she added. Some of these include the red coral, mussels and seagrass. She also warned that there are certain jellyfish species that are not affected by rising temperatures or even higher acid levels. As a result, their populations could considerably increase in the Mediterranean.

FEMEN MOVEMENT: Against sexual exploitation of women and sexism.
Topless activists church protest TWO topless Femen activists caused a stir when they chained themselves to a church crucifix. The Almudena Cathedral served as political stage for the new Femen protest in Spain. Two topless activists decided to chain themselves to a large crucifix located in the church’s altar. Wearing black skirts and crowns, the women walked to the altar, chained themselves and bared their torso. “Freedom for the right to abort” was written in black letters across their chests. They also started shouting “Abortion is sacred” and “Abortion is illegal, let’s take the altar.”
Dozens of worshippers and tourists were in the cathedral at the time. National Police officers ordered them to leave the premises and closed off the area. Femen is a feminist protest group founded in Ukraine in 2008. It is internationally known for its controversial protests and describes its philosophy as radical feminism. Its members fight against sex tourism, sexism, religious institutions, sexual exploitation of women and dictatorship. This is not the first Femen protest in Spain. Back in March, topless activists stormed a pro-life rally in Madrid shouting “Pro-life is genocide.”

How much money is in prostitution? STARTING in October, official statistics in Spain will include data from illegal economic transactions, including prostitution. The decision comes after the European Union required all member states to measure their annual GDP the same way. The European budget is allocated depending on the size of a country’s economy. Austria, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, Holland and Sweden already take into account illegal economic transactions when calculating their economic size. Spanish economic experts are putting the finishing touches to a method aimed at quantifying illegal
transactions. However, Spain’s Professional Organisation Of State Tax Inspectors (IHE) said that prostitution and soft drug trafficking may be legalised to better combat their adverse effects and increase public income. The IHE estimates that if these sectors paid 30 per cent in taxes, the Spanish Tax Agency could collect close to €6 billion. The 2006 ESCODE report of the Labour and Social Services Ministry looked at the potential repercussions of legalising prostitution and analysed its viability. It took into account several variables, including the value
added tax, the corporate tax, local taxes and the overall tax impact. It concluded, for instance, that legalising prostitution would increase the percentage of the income tax collected in Spain, which generally represents more than 50 per cent of government revenues. Furthermore, it estimates that the overall positive impact of legalising prostitution would amount to 0.53 per cent. Eurostat, which provides detailed statistics on the EU, devised guidelines to regulate these illegal activities and does not consider prostitution or soft drugs to be commercial goods.

A new King
S
PAIN will today have a new King. The increasingly unpopular Juan Carlos I has stepped aside to allow Felipe VI to be crowned. It is a deeply symbolic moment for the country. New blood to lead Spain into a new era, it is to be hoped. It must be remembered that Felipe’s father as a young man brought the country together at a dangerous moment in Spain’s history. Dictator Franco, who had used an iron fist to prevent the social and regional divides from splitting the country, was dead. Who then would keep the country together? Juan Carlos, together with the politicians of the day managed to do just that, but without most of the sinister, violent and politically repressive methods of dictatorship. Now Spain faces a different type of crisis. The social divides and gap between rich and poor seem to be
as wide as ever. People rely on soup kitchens. Tens of thousands of children only get one square meal a day - that provided at school. A new start is needed to bring the country back from the economic and social brink. It is to be hoped that Felipe can symbolise that start with fresh ideas and a sense of leadership in a country that desperately needs both.
Price of life STEPHEN MALLON died after a brawl outside a pub in a quiet Spanish village. He and his sons were set upon and battered in Competa, Axarquia by a mob of 15 young men. He died after the unprovoked assault. Of those 15 men just one will serve time - three years for manslaughter. Mr Mallon has been let down by Spanish justice.

SPAIN can begin repaying its bank bailout thanks to Bankia. So said junior Treasury Minister Iñigo Fernandez de Mesa as he praised the nationalised bank. The unexpected turnaround was possible thanks to the loyalty of existing clients to the almost ruined but now-
restructured bank, claimed Bankia chairman Jose Ignacio Goirigolzarri. The bank’s 14,000 employees contributed, as did its board of directors who risked their reputations after the government had to step in two years ago, Goirigolzarri added.
The grey area of car-shares SPANISH employees, once officially encouraged to carshare, have been warned that they could be breaking the law. Under transport regulations, people or companies who ferry passengers in private vehicles in return for money must first obtain official permission, the ministry of Public Works warned. Failure to do so could result in a €600 fine for individuals and up to €6,000 for groups. In ‘exceptional circumstance’ repeat offenders could face fines of up to €18,000. The ministry announcement is seen
as a response to protests from bus companies and cab drivers who claim they are losing out to associations like Uber. Much-used in Barcelona, Uber charges users unlike Blablacar which puts passengers wanting a car-share in touch with each other. Costs are shared and no laws broken. Sharing a car is not illegal, but problems arise when a private activity becomes professional public transport, ministry sources said. Insurance in the event of an accident is another consideration, they added.

THE Guardia Civil’s UCO unit, which pursues money laundering, is investigating Lionel Messi’s charity football matches. The crack Guardia Civil unit is investigating bank transfers totalling €950,000 from at least two of six ‘Messi and his friends vs The rest of the world’ fundraisers played in the US and Latin America between 2012 and 2013. Money raised from the matches was transferred to a company registered in Curaçao, the offshore tax paradise in the Dutch Antilles. The words ‘G Marin-Messi’ on the counterfoils point to Guillermo Marin, a friend of the Messi family in charge of the matches, UCO alleges. The investigation is parallel to another case brought against Messi by AEAT, Spain’s tax agency, for hiding income from image and advertising rights. The player has now deposited €5 million to offset penal responsibility in the court case that awaits him in Barcelona. In this latest case, Guardia Civil investigators are examining an alleged Colombian connection which, with the cooperation of individuals in Spain, used

The Guardia Civil has asked for judicial permission to start new proceedings to establish who is behind the account.

Spain does the business abroad SPANISH companies secured 832 foreign contracts worth €45 billion last year, 118 more than in 2012. Despite this increase total international earnings fell by €5 billion, according to the Economy ministry’s Directorate of International Commerce and Investment. The reduction was principally due to the absence of big moneymaking operations like the Mecca to Medina AVE high speed line, won two years ago and worth €7 billion, ministry sources explained. Latin America continues to be the most profitable area for Spanish companies, accounting for 33 per cent of all foreign contracts. The European Union with 23 per cent of contracts came next in importance, followed by the Near East and the Gulf states with 17 per cent. North and SubSaharan Africa are increasingly profitable fields for Spanish firms and the number of contracts increased 100 per cent last year compared with 2012, the ministry revealed. Operations in Australia and New Zealand also grew, with a 66 per cent increase. At the other end of the scale, contracts dwindled in North America, falling from 15 per cent of the total registered in 2012 to just 4 per cent in 2013. Fifty-three per cent of Spain’s international contracts centred on transport and infrastructure, bringing in almost €24 billion. Things are looking good for 2014, the Economy Ministry said.

The court will order a lien against any assets the debtor has in Spain, such as bank accounts or, in your case, rental income. The debt will include the Community’s
legal costs. It takes more time than it should, but the system does function.

Imperial floats Logista distribution company THE Imperial Tobacco Group confirmed that its subsidiary Logista will be quoted on the Spanish stock exchange. Imperial gained control of Logista in 2008 on acquiring Altadis, owner of the Fortuna and Gauloise brands, for €11 billion. According to Bloomberg estimates, Logista is at present worth around €1.8 billion. Logista also works with other companies in the consumer goods sector, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and publishing. It delivers to the company’s 300,000 delivery points in Spain, Portugal, Italy and France at kiosks, petrol stations, hospitals, pharmacies, hotels and restaurants. Altadis expects to sell Logista shares to a number of institutional investors although Imperial intends to retain a majority stake, the company revealed. Imperial, which has the fourth-largest share of global tobacco sales, is currently combating harsher regulations, a diminishing number of smokers and a weakened consumer market. The Bristol-based business reported September to March pre-tax profits of

Imperial has also revealed that it will close its last factory in mainland Britain and move production to France. Mojacar is reborn as town comes back to life… IN early 2010 we had to sell our holiday apartment in Mojacar due to ill health. We still continued to holiday there over the following years and it was quite sad during our last visit in late 2011 to see that the lovely Mojacar we knew had become a place of empty shops and cafes and was generally not looking good. However we have just returned from a three-week holiday and what a difference! The seafront area had been smartened up and landscaped and looked really inviting. Then, as we settled in to our holiday, we saw new shops and cafes and felt energy and freshness all around. It all added up to making our holiday so wonderful, reaffirming to us that Mojacar is truly the loveliest of places to visit. Driving motive THE article on women drivers in Spain (Street Talk issue 1509) made me laugh. All I can say is that those quoted are obviously not very good drivers, full stop! I am 76 years of age and have driven since the age of 21 on a regular basis. Fortunately I have never been involved in an accident. I have lived here for 14 years and was widowed four years ago. Yes, perhaps my husband drove more when we were out together but I know I would not still be living here if I did not drive. In fact I probably prefer driving here, with less traffic, to driving in England. Trade gap WHERE are all the extra tourists that your paper mentions? Come to that, where are the tourists? I live in Montemar and all we are short of is tumbleweed. Over the past week we have had maybe 20 people walk by and the roads are very quiet. There are no tourists in this area, the seafront is quiet and all businesses are suffering. There is nowhere for people to park and the sidewalks are littered with dog poo. Spain is slowly tightening the noose on itself by restricting people from parking or charging them a lot to park miles away from where they want to be. Many different nationalities have invested money in this country as well as many Spanish residents and who benefits? Not the locals. Only the government has a stable income - from us. Bank hold-up Round the bend I LOOK forward to your paper each week but quite often get annoyed by the letters’ page. It is usually full of complaints about how the Spanish do things wrong and upset expats. The one that really gets to me is the constant griping about driving and in particular how to use a roundabout. Officially a roundabout in Spain is treated as a bend in the road. You can go around it in any lane and if you have to cross a lane to exit it, it is up to you to do so safely and not for other drivers to keep out of your way. If you want to live here, learn the rules before griping about them. If you don't like the rules, EasyJet have some very good flights back to the rain and the coalition. La Zenia is cleaned daily, but not very well. Cala Capitan and Campoamor haven’t been done at all and there are large holes in the sand at Cala Capitan. None of them have walkways even near to the sea: how can the disabled access the water? There are no beach loungers, no cafes, no pedal boats and the sand is filthy. The streets are filthy, too, and weed-ridden. As a tourist I would not return to Orihuela Costa. Given that the restaurants, cafes, shops and apartment owners rely on a few months of tourism to survive, how many will be here in 2015? Name withheld (by email)
Cowboy victims MY wife and I recently returned to England from Alcoy and were recommended someone who was cheap and offered a personal removals service. When our belongings arrived we were horrified at the amount of damage. A brand new fridgefreezer had dents in the top and down the door, which he said were there when he collected it. He handed me a four inch splinter of wood he had broken off the top of a pine dresser. A Tiffany lampshade which he promised to take great care of will cost in the region of €175 to repair. Finally, the handle of my power washer was broken in two. Due to arthritis I told him at the outset that I was unable to assist in carrying heavy things. When he turned up at our UK residence he was alone, meaning I was forced to endure the pain of lifting heavy items. Let this be a lesson. Cheap he might have been, but was not a member of the BMA. She states that over 50 of her friends were pushed into taking out credit by their banks and clearly thinks that individuals have no responsibility for their actions. The banks forced them to do it! Good Samaritan ON June 2 on the AP-7 from Alicante airport to Valencia, our hire car broke down in the middle of the motorway. A young man in a pick-up truck put his own life at risk to help us and called the police who had to stop all traffic to get the car off the road. Fortunately no- one was hurt. ATIENCE is a virtue for the wise. It’s a platitude not often quoted, but nevertheless remains rock solid even during troubled times. Living in Spain you soon learn it. You have to. Unless of course you’re dumber than a grape and then you have no other alternative but to pray that someone crushes you quickly, turns you into a palatable wine and someone else drinks you and spurts forth whiffs of semi-conscious wisdom. I believe it was the great Saint Francis of Assisi who penned the often quoted ‘dicho’: Lord give me the strength to help me

change the things I can; to not worry about those things I cannot change AND the wisdom to know the difference. When I arrived in Spain some 45 years ago, I had within me already inculcated a level of patience measured exactly in the length of time it would take someone to
blink. It’s an American thing. If you’re not busy doing something or acting busy you just might be doing nothing. All that lasted about three weeks of my new life in Spain. Sitting around the house one leisurely afternoon and listening to music, the lights suddenly winked twice and then went off.
The music stopped too. Outside there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, no storms or high winds or visible lightning. Spain was just that way. Things happened beyond worldly control or understanding. Unexplainable and perplexing situations could come about instantaneously and alter the course of your
entire day. No electrics for no reason. Or, maybe it was no water or some other impossible occurrence, as if a switch had been flipped and the living day stopped dead in its spin. A blatant interruption that lasted until it became uninterrupted. You learned that too. Within a month of Sundays of living here it became apparent
that the ‘gods ran everything’ and nothing was dependable in any way or circumstance. On one of those no electricity days, by sheer accident I ran into a man with coat and tie also having morning coffee with two other men wearing the uniforms of the electrical company. I just had to ask them why didn’t we have any electricity. His reply was obviously simple and I have never forgotten it. “Well, it’s raining in Valencia, torrential rains, so they shut down the transformers there, which caused Alicante to go down, then Murcia, Lorca and Vera.” Not only wasn’t I suffering alone, half of Spain was relearning ‘patience’ and discovering that it was often in the hands of the gods and meteorologists.

Charming and tranquil Villaricos… VILLARICOS: Rugged coastline and clear waters.
THE charming and tranquil fishing village of Villaricos is a wonderful place to spend the day. At the foot of the Sierra Almagrera Mountains it derives its name from its ancient silvermines. It is said that it was from the mines that Hannibal derived the wealth to pay his armies that besieged Rome. Along with the bounty its fishermen get from the Mediterranean, much of the town’s income these days comes from tourism. That is due to the beaches, and wonderful climate the area enjoys most of the year round. There are two beaches; a pebbled expanse that borders the village and next-door an unspoilt golden sandy beach. The latter is in a sheltered bay which, although popular with the locals, is never crowded. There is an excellent chiringuito (beach bar) where sun seekers can enjoy some refreshment in the heat of the day. The town has two harbours, called Puerto La Esperanza and Puerto
FISHING VILLAGE: Charming and tranquil.
CHURCH: Situated just before the main square. La Balsica which are linked by a broad promenade with numerous places to sit and have a drink or just people watch. It is a favoured place for an evening stroll by both the Spanish and visitors alike. Villaricos is known for its crystal clear warm waters and its fabulous diving making it a popular destination for divers. There is also a rugged and undeveloped coastline perfect for some peace and quiet. There are a good selection of restaurants and bars, a fishmongers, supermarkets and with
food at very reasonable prices and cuisine ranging from native Spanish to British pub food. There is small market every Sunday morning in the square from 10am to 2pm. There is a pretty church, just before the main square.
There are annual fiestas, the next one coming up is on 15 August then Dreambeach music festival which is huge and runs over two days starting on August 8. The streets of Villaricos are lined with street bars, with a fantastic atmosphere. Villaricos needs to be visited to appreciate the many different things that there are to do there, it has been a bit forgotten by tourists that come to the surrounding areas.

Pessimistic about England’s chances A FIFA Survey has shown that England fans are the second most pessimistic fans at the World Cup with just 4 per cent believing their team will win. Fifty three per cent of English said they don’t care if England win or lose. Are they right to be pessimistic, and are you surprised so many are not bothered - are you ?

EE BROWN, aged 40, owner of Ananda’s bar in urbanisation La Marina, is surprised that over half of those questioned in the survey are not bothered about England’s World Cup result: “I thought people would be more patriotic than that, but I’m not surprised at not many people thinking they will win.” Speaking after England’s first match of the tournament he said: “I think they may get to the quarters, it was still a good performance despite their first loss.” Billy Anderson from Northern Ireland disagrees: “I was not impressed, they are simply not good enough, I

GHOSTS: Some people are attuned to a spiritual plane, some are not.

HEN five successful British writers revealed their belief in ghosts they based their stories on personal experience. Did they open themselves to ridicule? Apparently not. Studies show that 48 per cent of Americans believe in ghosts. Given that Britain is more ghostfriendly, I would expect the British percentage of believers to be higher. I never had a problem coming to terms with apparitions or the supernatural. This may be due to their being self-evident. As a child, mother would say, “it is the living, not the dead who harm you.” An Ordinary Seaman on the MV Grecian, I recall a night time
passage approaching Gibraltar. Entering the tool room far below the waterline two engineers chanced upon an Arab sitting cross-legged on an oil drum. Presuming the youngster to be a stowaway the pair approached. It was then they realised that the figure was an apparition. Horrified, both men fled to the upper deck. I can testify to their extreme shock. Only when the ship reached
London did the captain reveal that the spectre was evident during earlier voyages. It was that of a youngster who, on stowing away in Tripoli, was fatally sealed in a hold. A ship’s lookout will ring the fo’c’sle bell once if a ship is seen to starboard, twice if to port and three times if ahead. Through the stormy night the bell constantly rang accurately as we approached the English Channel.
Only at dawn was it realised the lookout was nowhere near the bell but was on the upper bridge. Sent to tie the maverick bell the lookout returned to say that it had been disabled the previous night. Who then had been tolling the bell’s warnings? Before retiring to Spain I lived in an old manse. Think of the sitcom, ‘To the Manor Born’ and you have it. The apparition there made no
secret of its presence. We accepted each other and I christened her Casperette. Rarely did I mention her to visitors but many guests were startled by her unexpected presence. One night, using the guest room, a lady colleague stayed overnight. Just as we settled down we were shocked by an atrocious banging on both our bedroom doors. Running to the landing we found it to be empty. Neither of us made a big deal of it. However, I am convinced that Casperette was consumed by jealousy at the presence of my female guest. On several occasions I stayed at Widdecombe Manor in Chagford, Devon. R. D Blackmore’s classic, Lorna Doone, was based on the manor’s 17th Century romantic tragedy. My experiences whilst a guest would make your hair stand on end as they did mine. I have never questioned life on a spiritual plane. Some are attuned to it, some are not.

AN anyone tell me exactly what this Angelina Jolie/ William Hague antirape escapade is actually supposed to achieve? Do they honestly think that by making rape some kind of war crime, their efforts are really going to make any difference whatsoever? When some big buck Neanderthal is razing some township, do they consider a ruling, introduced in a far off land, is going to make the slightest difference to his rampant intentions? Are these people truly of a mind that some despot general is going to instruct his troops to kill everyone, including the women and children, but not to rape anyone or they could all be in real trouble? Give us a break! This whole thing is yet another exercise in showbiz personalities, bored with their pampered lives of stardom, endeavouring to show us all just how much they really ‘care’.
JOLIE: Anti-rape crusade. Couple this with sorry, starstruck politicians, hob-nobbing with these tinsel town twits in an effort to raise their own pathetic profiles and you’ve got the whole sorry debacle in a nutshell. Personally I wonder
just how much this utterly useless exercise is actually going to cost; because believe me, somewhere down the line, the poor, beleaguered taxpayer will be well up this piffling project’s expense ladder. And that’s fer sure. Another thing that struck me this week was the Boris Johnson/Theresa May water cannon affair. When asked what she thought about the whole suggestion, Ms May remarked that there were a number of issues which had to be considered before any OK was given for their introduction. The main one was - wait for it, ‘ealth an safety issues! Ha, well of course it is. Can you imagine the jobsworth brigade getting their teeth into this one? I bet they find it positively orgasmic. I mean, the mind boggles. Only demonstrators wearing goggles, crash helmets and over 18 can be ‘zapped’. Knee and elbow pads must be made available to all rampaging
mobs. Water pressure must not exceed X amount per square inch. All water must be filtered and tested for impurities before use. I mean the list goes on and on. The poor old operators will be petrified of using the machine in case they finish up in court for GBH. No, I shall be very surprised to see the introduction of water cannon onto the streets of GB. Talking of jobsworths, was it not also interesting to be reliably informed that it took top scientists four days and 30 attempts - in controlled temperature laboratory conditions - to make an explosive from mixing liquids together? (Apparently it has to also be dried to a powder before use.) Not much chance of some toe rag managing that after a few minutes in the loo of a 747. Mmm!

MARCUS WAREING has signed up to become a new judge on MasterChef: The Professionals. The culinary expert - who has two Michelin stars, winning his first at the age of 25 - will join Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace on the panel when the show returns later this year. He takes over from Michel Roux Jr, who was forced to quit the series because of a “conflict in commercial interests” and later complained that “negotiating with the BBC can be a frustrating process.” Wareing, who began his career at The Savoy when he

The X Factor has confirmed that Mel B will be the fourth judge this series. “I’m so excited to be joining The X Factor - I loved being a guest judge back in 2012,” she said. “I’ve always thought honesty is the best policy when being a judge and that’s what I’m going to bring more of this year - whether it’s spotting an incredible singer, giving someone a reality check or debating with Simon over who’s got it wrong! Meanwhile, Cowell said: “I am thrilled that Mel B has agreed to be a judge on The X Factor this year. I thought she was fantastic as a guest judge a couple of years ago. She is feisty, opinionated and, I
believe, will be a great mentor.” ITV also officially confirmed for the first time that Louis Walsh will be back, joining returning judges Cowell and Cheryl Cole. “It should be a fun year with both Simon and Cheryl returning and I think Mel will keep us all on our toes,” Walsh said. “She is Scary Spice after all.” Elsewhere, ITV confirmed that Dermot O’Leary will be back for another year as the show’s host, and that once again there will be two stages of auditions - a closed room with the judges, and then a big performance in an arena.

Epilepsy report in Spain EPILEPSY is one of the most common neurological diseases in Spain. According to the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), each year between 12,400 and 22,000 new cases are detected and diagnosed. “Thanks to the advances that have occurred in both diagnosis of the disease and pharmacological arsenal, the prognosis of patients is much improved,” said Dr. Juan Mercade Cerda, coordinator of the Epilepsy Study Group of the Spanish Society Neurology (SEN). “In general, patients can control their disease and seizures well with medication, or achieve a spontaneous and prolonged remission not requiring chronic treatment, but it is estimated about 25 per cent of epilepsy is not controlled completely. “It is these patients who require more effort by the scientific community to find new targets for action, and by the administration to improve their attendance.” According to data by the White Paper on Epilepsy in Spain, conducted by SEN, epilepsy is one of the diseases affecting the quality of life of patients with 70 per cent believing their illness affects them or their quality of life and more than 60 per cent of patients have had their academic performance affected. Of respondents, 30 per cent said a family member has left their job or reduced their working hours to assist someone with the condition.
MALARIA: The disease is spread by infected female mosquitoes.
GM mosquitoes could help wipe out malaria A GENETICALLY modified mosquito could be the key to wiping out malaria. The disease is spread by infected female mosquitoes which pass on the disease as they bite humans. Now, British scientists at London’s Imperial College say they could have found a way to wiping out the disease by developing a genetically modified species that produces just male offspring. The researchers looked to genetics to disrupt the breeding of mosquitoes so fewer females are produced, which should see mosquitoes die out within a few generations. In lab tests, they modified mosquitoes to produce sperm that will only create males. They believe if this could be recreated in the wild, the female population would ultimately die out. Since 2000 increased prevention and control measures have reduced global malaria mortality rates by 42 per cent, but the disease remains a prevalent killer
especially in subSaharan African regions. Over 3.4 billion people are at risk from
contracting malaria and an estimated 627,000 people die each year from the disease.
A jab against heart attacks A NEW injection scientists say could be available within 10 years, could reduce the risk of heart attack by up to 90 per cent. The jab would act like a one off ‘vaccination’ and uses DNA-editing technology to ‘knock out’ a liver gene which is believed to raise levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. It has already been tested successfully on mice, reducing blood concentrations of cholesterol in days. It’s believed it will have the same effect on humans.

Around Spain on a plate: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria LAS PALMAS, and the Canary Islands in general, is soaked in the cultures and traditions of other places - there are 117 different nationalities currently living on the islands and countless influences from past inhabitants which have all contributed to the local gastronomy. Here are a few examples of the most traditional dishes. Every meal should be started with ‘los enyesques’ (starters) and one of the most popular is ‘papas arrugadas’ (wrinkly potatoes) these are potatoes which have been boiled in salty water and lemon rind; they are usually served with a spicy sauce called ‘mojo’ which ingredients vary greatly depending on the bar or restaurant you are in. Another traditional starter is ‘ropa vieja’ (old clothes) and consists of chick peas, beef, chicken and vegetables; the meat is cooked for a long time until it is very loose and then it is pulled

Last time we introduced the ‘Geek’ OS called Linux. Today I would like to look at some of the pros and cons of this OS compared to others. What are the disadvantages of Linux over Windows / Apple / Android? First a little knowledge. Android is a cut-down proprietary version of Linux, so if you have used Android you are aware of the Linux OS. Microsoft and Apple come from the same business stable, and have been marketed aggressively, forcing software writers to produce for either Apple or Microsoft.

PODEMOS IN ALBOX: Gearing up for municipal elections.
Podemos in Albox PODEMOS became the fourth political party in Spain following the European elections held on May 25. Founded on January 17 2014 by left activists, PODEMOS has taken advantage of the generalised discontent with Spain’s bipartisanship of the PP (People’s Party) and the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party). The party seeks to recover the economy,
promote liberty, fraternity and equality and redefine sovereignty. The political party is also present in Albox and its local members wish to organise themselves now that the municipal elections are just around the corner. Around 30 people met on the town square to witness the official presentation of the Albox Podemos branch. “There is a different way to understand politics, in which citizens’ interests are
prioritised. We want the residents of Albox to join us. Together we can meet their needs and find a solution to their problems,” said Francisco Fabrega, spokesperson for the group. “Everyone is welcome as long as they want to change things.” he added. They still do not know if they want to be an association or a political party and participate in the municipal elections.

Fashion Tennis C APSA, the animal charity in Albox, recently held a fashion show at the Tennis Club. The event, always a sell-out, it raised over â‚Ź1,600 to help the many animals in care and the building of the new kennels. Organiser Sue Buckley was delighted with the friendly, relaxed atmosphere at the venue and would like to thank everyone who came along to support the event. Sue spent many happy hours fitting the models and preparing outfits and accessories for the fashion show, auction and sales - with ladies leaving FASHIONABLE LADIES: Paraded at the charity show.

Missing information on most real-estate websites in Madrid MOST real-estate agencies in Madrid omit obligatory information on their websites. According to an advertising control campaign launched by the Community of Madrid, nine out of every 10 websites for rentals do not provide information about the final price of their services. A third of the websites include questionable clauses, including disclaimers. The advertising control campaign looked at 28 real-estate companies, 17 of which are based in Madrid and 11 in other municipalities. More than half - 57.7 per cent - of the websites do not comply with the obligation to provide their clients with all the information required by law. Fourteen of them failed to provide their value added tax identification number, eight did not give their registered name,

It was also discovered that 92.3 per cent of the house advertisements found online lacked a proper floor plan. Furthermore, 11.54 per cent of the websites contained erroneous information. Most potential tenants spend hours in front of their computer screens trying to find the perfect home to rent. Missing or misleading information could result in the wrong choice.

THE economic crisis has undoubtedly been devastating for world economies. While there are some signs of recovery, the truth is most people must still make sacrifices if they want to make ends meet, including Spanish landlords. According to the Spanish real-estate website Idealista, the number of Spanish landlords willing to charge less rent has increased by 40 per cent, compared to 2013. Computer rescue company helps out animal rescue charity PIRdA has donated a computer system to APSA, the animal rescue charity. It has been installed at their new kennels, just north of Albox, and will be used for general administrative work for the kennels, and for revamping and updating the APSA website. PIRdA, the computer and IT recycling organisation, is part of Albox Computer Club, and is officially registered - with the Junta de Andalucia - as a nonprofit group. APSA is currently building new kennels to save on boarding costs and be closer to Albox for walking, homing, etc. If you have building materials - blocks, cement, tiles, etc - or expertise to offer please ring Di on 663 762 642. MG sales double in five months MG has been reborn and new life breathed into the marque since the demise of MG Rover. Following the brand’s sale to the Chinese it has started a programme of expansion based round its Longbridge assembly plant. MG has sustained dramatic growth in 2014 as the Midlands based manufacturer doubled 2013 total sales volumes in just the first five months of the year. Rolls-Royce owner to perform 50 acts of kindness in a bid to raise £200,000

A ROLLS-ROYCE Phantom Coupé stopped off in Edinburgh as part of an epic 3,000 mile journey from Miami to Spain’s Ibiza that promises to raise a six-figure sum for charity. Rolls-Royce owner, Garreth Wood, founder of the Edinburgh-based Speratus Group, his wife Nicola and school friend William Rhind are taking part in the Gumball 3000 Rally, a starstudded event that sees an array of the world’s most exotic, luxurious and often outlandishly decorated cars cover remarkable distances in just seven days. Mr and Mrs Wood have taken the opportunity to raise vital funds and awareness for ‘When You Wish Upon a Star,’ a charity that has granted the wishes of over 14,500 children suffering from life threatening illnesses since it was founded in 1990. Throughout their journey they will perform 50 Random Acts of Kindness with Garreth’s company promising to donate £2,000 (€2,500) for every act, the Gumball Foundation will then match the money raised. Audi spares no effort with revamped A7 Sportback AUDI has spared no effort in revising the A7 Sportback. in the Middle East. Kahn bought the plate from Essex County Council which had it registered to a Volvo S80 used by its chairman. The council sold it off to raise funds to train young drivers. At the time it was a record price for a private sale.

The most striking changes are to the Singleframe grille, bumpers, tailpipes and headlights. LED technology is now standard; upon request, Audi can supply Matrix LED headlights, which light the road optimally without causing glare for other road users. Combined with the Matrix LED headlights, dynamic turn signals are also installed at the front; they come standard at the rear. The body of the new Audi A7 Sportback consists primarily of aluminum and high-tech steel grades. It is extraordinarily lightweight and designed for maximum comfort in terms of noise. The cargo space under the long, electrically driven trunk lid has a base capacity of 535 litres. When the rear seat backs are folded down it grows to 1,390 litres. The sporty style of the exterior is echoed in the car’s interior. The dominant element
is the horizontal line surrounding the driver and passenger. The dashboard gives an impression of lightness and elegance. The new interior materials, including the aluminum / Beaufort walnut inlay and Valcona leather, are impressive for their finish. The colour palette has been redesigned, offering five colour options even for the seats. The new Audi A7 Sportback is confident and relaxed to drive. The front seats can be optionally equipped with ventilation and massage functions, and there are four seat versions to choose from. The MMI radio operating system comes standard; it can be supplemented as an option with a head-up display that projects all important information onto the windshield. To start out, Audi is offering the new A7 Sportback with a choice of five powerful and highly efficient engines: two petrol and three diesel units. Their power rating ranges from 160 kW (218 hp) to 245 kW (333 hp), and all of them comply with the Euro 6 emission standard. Many aspects of the 3.0 TDI clean diesel with 200 kW (272 hp) have been newly developed. In the ‘ultra’ version with 160 kW (218 hp) and frontwheel drive, the threelitre V6 uses an average of just 4.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. The top-of-the-range engine, the 4.0 TFSI, is available in the Audi S7 Sportback. It delivers 331 kW (450 hp) of power and uses innovative COD (cylinder on demand) technology.

THE 19th Hole GS played Valle de Este Golf resort, with temperatures climbing to the mid 20s by 10am and most of the 20 players feeling the heat. Mark Danson once again rose to the challenge of encouraging a high handicap partner to perform above the norm. This time it was the turn of Geoff Smith to partner Mark. They easily won the Scramble taking just 70 shots to complete the par 71 course in net 64. Nigel Greenwood and Harry Eels secured second place with a net 69, closely followed by Nekana Galindez and Paco Ocaña Grayal on 71. AN individual Stableford competition at Marina Phoenix saw partners Les and Isobel win their respective divisions. The Ladies Division was: first Isobel Jones (35) followed by Margaret Budd (32) second, on countback, from Linda King (32). Les Armfield won the Men’s Division on 37 points, with John Lally (36) one behind in second followed by Brian Mayhew (35) in third. Thursday’s team game, a Texas Scramble, witnessed a large turnout with four prizes to be won by the 10 teams competing. Winner of the day’s competition was Richard Smith with 39 points; second place went to Mark Newhall with 34 points, and third place was John Archer with 33.
