Coronation Day for new King of Spain

S

PAIN is set to have a new king today (Thursday). Crown Prince Felipe, 46, (pictured with his daughters) was due to be enthroned as the new King of Spain at 10.30am. In what has been planned as an austere and low-key ceremony, in keeping with the country’s frugal stance amidst the economic crisis, he will be crowned without a religious ceremony. No foreign dignitaries have been invited. The king-in-waiting himself had reportedly requested that his proclamation be a simple affair. Nevertheless, a military procession has been scheduled in front of Spanish politicians, and the new king and queen are expected to present themselves to the public from the Royal Palace’s balcony in Madrid. Prince Felipe will ascend to the Spanish throne following the unexpected abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos. Juan Carlos’s coronation took place in 1975 after Franco’s death. The abdication sparked calls throughout the country for a referendum on the future of Spain’s monarchy and for a new

republic to be established. Demonstrations with tens of thousands of people taking part were staged in cities across Spain, calling for a public debate on the future of the monarchy, with

republican organisations to the fore. Others have frowned on the low-key coronation, instead wanting more pomp and ceremony, saying it would give the country a boost.

Briton’s killer jailed for just 3 years A MALAGA court has jailed the Spanish killer of father-of-three Stephen Mallon for just three years after finding him guilty of manslaughter. Mr Mallon died during a bar brawl which also left his twin sons with severe injuries. According to local witnesses, the incident started over a girl who used to date one of the accused, outside a discobar called La Estrella in the Axarquia village of Cómpeta. End of the road for donkey sanctuary

THE Nerja Donkey Sanctuary is scheduled to close its doors at the end of June after it failed to get the licences needed to stay open. The charity could only continue if it changed its location, which would cost close to €10,000. Some of the donkeys are being taken to El Refugio del Burrito in Antequera, to be cared for, while others are moving to Marbella and Frigliana. There are animals which have not found a new home

yet, including a horse named Campeone, four dogs and five cats. The sanctuary needs donations since the staff need to pay off their outstanding debts. On their website, the sanctuary team thanked the thousands of people who have supported them in the last 10 years. The sanctuary originally opened its doors in June 2004. Since then, they have rescued hundreds of equines as well as other animals.

Fake football shirts seized VELEZ-MALAGA police officers have seized 351 fake football shirts. The police operation took place at an open-air market in Torre del Mar. The fake football shirts were valued at €26,000 approximately. The mayor, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, said a 49-year-old man from Velez-Malaga had been charged with crimes against

intellectual property. The police operation came after several Spanish football clubs and companies selling trademarked sportswear filed a complaint against the sale of the replica football shirts. Sales of fake football shirts have increased since the World Cup in Brazil began. Mayor Delgado Bonilla congratulated the police and said

that local inspections would increase in the coming months to combat crime against intellectual property. Spain as a whole is considered one of the worst countries in Europe for the sale of fake items. That has led to more and more local councils cracking down on street traders and market stalls in an effort to safeguard the interests of shops.

Summer solstice and San Juan THE summer solstice happens when the tilt of the earth, in either the northern or southern hemisphere, is most inclined towards the sun. Solstices happen twice every year and this year the summer solstice will happen on June 21. At exactly 10.51am the sun will reach its highest position in the sky as seen from either the North or South Pole. In Spain this means ‘La Noche de San Juan’ (The Night of San Juan) which is a pagan festival whose principal rite consists of building a bonfire in order to give the sun more intensity, but in reality means that entire villages will spend the night on the beach having a party, setting off fireworks and barbecuing

Avocado sales are 10 per cent higher than last year AVOCADOS have once more proven to be one of the most important crops for Malaga Province. The industry has achieved sales valued at €62 million,10 per cent more than in 2013, according to Asaja Malaga. Sales increased despite the harsh climatic adversities the farmers had to face. The strong winds registered last year resulted in the loss of 13 per cent of production. “However, thanks to the quality of the fruit harvested this year and the knowledge most farmers have of the market, they have been able to sell €7 million more than last year.” said Benjamin Fauli, General Secretary of Asaja Malaga. In Malaga Province there are 6,000 avocado hectares, most of them in Axarquia. During 2013-2014 they have produced 40,000 tons of avocado, compared to the 46,700

have been exported to non-EU countries. For yet another year in a row, the largest percentage of the avocado harvest is sold outside Spain, especially in France, the UK and Germany.

Prices have also remained stable. While they have been somewhat lower than last year, the decrease has been compensated by such an impressive harvest.

Briton’s Spanish killer jailed for just 3 years From Front Page was subsequently dazed when a beer bottle smashed over his head. Two men were found guilty of assault with dangerous weapons and jailed for two years, but in Spain prison sentences of two years or less are normally suspended for first-time offenders. The judge also ordered the main accused, Jose Jimenez Martin, to compensate Mr Mallon’s three children with €90,000 (£72,000) each and his widow Teresa with €120,000 (£96,000).

ALMUÑECAR is holding celebrations for ‘Environment Month’ with a dozen different activities. Infestation of fleas closes public school A BENAMARGOSA public school and nursery remain closed because of fleas. School authorities at the Miguel Fortes Fortes public school were forced to vacate the school buildings and send the children home due to a flea infestation. The council also decided to close a nearby nursery for fear the infestation might spread to it as well. Jose Gallego, mayor of Benamargosa, said the infestation may have been caused by the stray cats that enter the school to eat whatever leftovers they can find. The fleas were found in the schoolyard and the classrooms as well. The school hired specialist pest control services to fumigate the building, which was scheduled to reopen its doors a week later. However, it had to be closed once more when it was discovered that not only had the fleas not been exterminated, but also that the infestation had spread to other areas.

FUMIGATION: Some pesticides are very toxic. School authorities have said the school must remain closed until the fleas have been exterminated and because of the toxicity of the pesticides used for pest control. Parents have complained because of the unfortunate timing of the flea infestation. “The high-school students were about to take their finals and now this infestation has interrupted their daily school activities,” said one mother.

Gallego said the council will undertake measures to rid the vicinity of strays cats and dogs and house them in animal shelters. Fleas are wingless, agile and darkcoloured insects that feed on the blood of people and animals. Fleas are known to cause several diseases in humans as well as pets. Some of these include allergic reactions, tapeworms and murine typhus.

NEWS Fatal crash on A-7 ONE person was killed and six others were critically injured when a van overturned on the A-7 motorway in Macharaviaya. According to local traffic authorities, six of the passengers in the overturned vehicle were construction workers. They were commuting between Almeria and Malaga. The passenger that was killed was the father of one of the other six. While authorities are still looking into what caused the accident, it appears a blown-out tyre may have been the reason why the van overturned. Following the accident, the traffic police closed the right lane of the A-7, which caused a threekilometre traffic jam.

Tapas delight in Rincon A DELICIOUS tapa and a drink for only €2! This was one of the many appeals of the 16th Tapas Fair. From Thursday June 12 to Sunday June 15, 18 catering companies based in Rincon de la Victoria offered tourists and local residents the opportunity to enjoy more than 100 mouthwatering delicacies. Francisco Salado, Mayor of Rincon de la Victoria, opened the gastronomic event alongside Marta Marin, Tourism City Councillor, and Jose Antonio Villodres, Head of the Business Owners Association.

TREAT: Tapa and a drink for €2. The Tapas Fair “serves as a stimulus for the restaurant and catering

business, considering the profits generated by the event, which amount to

€300,000. We are expecting more than 25,000 people this year,” said Salado before the event. The menu included local and traditional Spanish recipes, like paella and porra antequera, as well as more exotic options, including moussaka and couscous. The event was made all the more interesting by a tapas contest, live music and big television screens so visitors could catch the World Cup football matches while enjoying the culinary experience of the 16th Tapas Fair.

Charity concert in La Carrera THE City of Granada Orchestra (OCG) will play a fundraising concert on July 11. The money raised will go to four previously chosen associations: Caritas, AFAVIDA, Asociacion Madres

Solas Marisa Sendon and Asociacion de ACOFA-TDAH. The concert will take place at the Roman aqueduct in La Carrera. The selected musical pieces will include works by Mozart and Sarasate.

Concert-goers are being encouraged to make a small €5 donation. “It is a symbolic amount,” said Olga Ruano, City Councillor for Culture and Social Welfare. “OCG concerts are much more expensive.”

Q for Quality award ALMUÑECAR Mayor Trinidad Herrera was presented with four ‘Q for Quality’ awards by the Institute for Spanish Touristic Quality on June 12. The awards go to four Almunecar beaches: Velilla, Puerta del Mar, San Cristobal and La Herradura. The Q for Quality awards were presented by Jose Manuel Soria, Minister for Industry and Tourism in Madrid. Herrera said that the flags which will fly on every winning beach are a symbol of “the great work done by everyone.” She went on to say that “they also represent the commitment we have made to the tourists.” Beaches and hotels awarded the Q for Quality have to comply with the strictest quality, safety and professionalism standards.

animals: dogs, cats and even pigs, parrots and goldfish. They are a small group of volunteers, who are dedicated to taking care of and rehoming abused and abandoned animals in the Axarquia area. They do not have a shelter or premises and rely 100 per cent on a fantastic network of foster families to care for the animals and give

them the time they need to rehome them. They are all volunteers and rely totally on donations and fundraising to keep going. Their vet bills are usually in the region of €4,000 a month. This small group has an amazing army of supporters and volunteers who make it possible for them to do their work. But it is a terrible struggle every month to pay the

PAIN will today have a new King. The increasingly unpopular Juan Carlos I has stepped aside to allow Felipe VI to be crowned. It is a deeply symbolic moment for the country. New blood to lead Spain into a new era, it is to be hoped. It must be remembered that Felipe’s father as a young man brought the country together at a dangerous moment in Spain’s history. Dictator Franco, who had used an iron fist to prevent the social and regional divides from splitting the country, was dead. Who then would keep the country together? Juan Carlos, together with the politicians of the day, managed to do just that, but without most of the sinister, violent and politically repressive methods of dictatorship. Now Spain faces a different type of crisis. The social divides and gap between rich and poor seem to be

as wide as ever. People rely on soup kitchens. Tens of thousands of children only get one square meal a day - that provided at school. A new start is needed to bring the country back from the economic and social brink. It is to be hoped that Felipe can symbolise that start with fresh ideas and a sense of leadership in a country that desperately needs both.

Price of life STEPHEN MALLON died after a brawl outside a pub in a quiet Spanish village. He and his sons were set upon and battered in Competa, Axarquia, by a mob of 15 young men. He died after the unprovoked assault. Of those 15 men just one will serve time - three years for manslaughter. Mr Mallon has been let down by Spanish justice.

SPAIN can begin repaying its bank bailout thanks to Bankia. So said junior Treasury Minister Iñigo Fernandez de Mesa as he praised the nationalised bank. The unexpected turnaround was possible thanks to the loyalty of existing clients to the almost ruined but now-

restructured bank, claimed Bankia chairman Jose Ignacio Goirigolzarri. The bank’s 14,000 employees contributed, as did its board of directors who risked their reputations after the government had to step in two years ago, Goirigolzarri added.

The grey area of car-shares SPANISH employees, once officially encouraged to carshare, have been warned that they could be breaking the law. Under transport regulations, people or companies who ferry passengers in private vehicles in return for money must first obtain official permission, the Ministry of Public Works warned. Failure to do so could result in a €600 fine for individuals and up to €6,000 for groups. In ‘exceptional circumstance’ repeat offenders could face fines of up to €18,000. The ministry announcement is seen

as a response to protests from bus companies and cab drivers who claim they are losing out to associations like Uber. Much-used in Barcelona, Uber charges users unlike Blablacar which puts passengers wanting a car-share in touch with each other. Costs are shared and no laws broken. Sharing a car is not illegal, but problems arise when a private activity becomes professional public transport, ministry sources said. Insurance in the event of an accident is another consideration, they added.

THE Guardia Civil’s UCO unit, which pursues money laundering, is investigating Lionel Messi’s charity football matches. The crack Guardia Civil unit is investigating bank transfers totalling €950,000 from at least two of six ‘Messi and his friends vs The rest of the world’ fundraisers played in the US and Latin America between 2012 and 2013. Money raised from the matches was transferred to a company registered in Curaçao, the offshore tax paradise in the Dutch Antilles. The words ‘G Marin-Messi’ on the counterfoils point to Guillermo Marin, a friend of the Messi family in charge of the matches, UCO alleges. The investigation is parallel to another case brought against Messi by AEAT, Spain’s tax agency, for hiding income from image and advertising rights. The player has now deposited €5 million to offset penal responsibility in the court case that awaits him in Barcelona. In this latest case, Guardia Civil investigators are examining an alleged Colombian connection which, with the cooperation of individuals in Spain, used the

Finances getting messier still for Messi as Guardia Civil investigate charity matches to launder profits from drugs trafficking. As well as Guillermo Marin, Harisson Gonzalez and Andres Barco - respectively president and vice-president of Total Conciertos - are also in UCO’s sights. Barco recently acknowledged that money was still owed to the charities supposed to benefit from the matches. Messi and his father admitted knowing Marin but denied making any personal profit from the matches. Asked who was in touch with Marin, the player answered: “Not me. My father is the one who makes contact,” echoing an earlier statement to a Barcelona judge when he claimed: “My dad sees to the money.” The player’s Barcelona teammates who played in the matches, including Javier Mascherano, Dani Alves and Jose Manuel Pinto also denied profiting from the matches, although their travel and accommodation were paid for. The Guardia Civil has asked for judicial permission to start new proceedings to establish who is behind the account.

The emerging BT did get its act together. It had little choice. Intruders were taking business off them like sweets from a kid. I was one of them. The Australian Red Telephone Company built a commissionbased network of agents placing payphones in restaurants, hotels, retailers, public houses. Anywhere the imagination of resourceful sales staff would take them.

Spain does the business abroad SPANISH companies secured 832 foreign contracts worth €45 billion last year, 118 more than in 2012. Despite this increase total international earnings fell by €5 billion, according to the Economy Ministry’s Directorate of International Commerce and Investment. The reduction was principally due to the absence of big moneymaking operations like the Mecca to Medina AVE high-speed line, won two years ago and worth €7 billion, ministry sources explained. Latin America continues to be the most profitable area for Spanish companies, accounting for 33 per cent of all foreign contracts. The European Union with 23 per cent of contracts came next in importance, followed by the Near East and the Gulf States with 17 per cent. North and SubSaharan Africa are increasingly profitable fields for Spanish firms and the number of contracts increased 100 per cent last year compared with 2012, the ministry revealed. Operations in Australia and New Zealand also grew, with a 66 per cent increase. At the other end of the scale, contracts dwindled in North America, falling from 15 per cent of the total registered in 2012 to just 4 per cent in 2013. Fifty-three per cent of Spain’s international contracts centred on transport and infrastructure, bringing in almost €24 billion. Things are looking good for 2014, the Economy Ministry said.

The court will order a lien against any assets the debtor has in Spain, such as bank accounts or, in your case, rental income. The debt will include the community’s legal costs. It takes more

time than it should, but the system does function.

Imperial floats Logista distribution company THE Imperial Tobacco Group confirmed that its subsidiary Logista will be quoted on the Spanish stock exchange. Imperial gained control of Logista in 2008 on acquiring Altadis, owner of the Fortuna and Gauloise brands, for €11 billion. According to Bloomberg estimates, Logista is at present worth around €1.8 billion. Logista also works with other companies in the consumer goods sector, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and publishing. It delivers to the company’s 300,000 delivery points in Spain, Portugal, Italy and France at kiosks, petrol stations, hospitals, pharmacies, hotels and restaurants. Altadis expects to sell Logista shares to a number of institutional investors although Imperial intends to retain a majority stake, the company revealed. Imperial, which has the fourth-largest share of global tobacco sales, is currently combating harsher regulations, a diminishing number of smokers and a weakened consumer market. The Bristol-based business reported September to March pre-tax profits of

Mojacar is reborn as town comes back to life… IN early 2010 we had to sell our holiday apartment in Mojacar due to ill health. We still continued to holiday there over the following years and it was quite sad during our last visit in late 2011 to see that the lovely Mojacar we knew had become a place of empty shops and cafés and was generally not looking good. However, we have just returned from a three-week holiday and what a difference! The seafront area had been smartened up and landscaped and looked really inviting. Then, as we settled into our holiday, we saw new shops and cafés and felt energy and freshness all around. It all added up to making our holiday so wonderful, reaffirming to us that Mojacar is truly the loveliest of places to visit. Driving motive THE article on women drivers in Spain (Street Talk Issue 1509) made me laugh. All I can say is that those quoted are obviously not very good drivers, full stop! I am 76 years of age and have driven since the age of 21 on a regular basis. Fortunately, I have never been involved in an accident. I have lived here for 14 years and was widowed four years ago. Yes, perhaps my husband drove more when we were out together but I know I would not still be living here if I did not drive. In fact, I probably prefer driving here, with less traffic, to driving in England. I would say to all those women drivers who let their husband take the wheel: “Don’t stop driving!” If anything happens to him it will be the first thing you need to do. Janet Richards (by email)

Trade gap WHERE are all the extra tourists that your paper mentions? Come to that, where are the tourists? I live in Montemar and all we are short of is tumbleweed. Over the past week we have had maybe 20 people walk by and the roads are very quiet. There are no tourists in this area, the seafront is quiet and all businesses are suffering. There is nowhere for people to park and the sidewalks are littered with dog poo. Spain is slowly tightening the noose on itself by restricting people from parking or charging them a lot to park miles away from where they want to be. Many different nationalities have invested money in this country as well as many Spanish residents and who benefits? Not the locals. Only the government has a stable income - from us. Bank hold-up Round the bend I LOOK forward to your paper each week but quite often get annoyed by the Letters’ page. It is usually full of complaints about how the Spanish do things wrong and upset expats. The one that really gets to me is the constant griping about driving and in particular how to use a roundabout. Officially a roundabout in Spain is treated as a bend in the road. You can go around it in any lane and if you have to cross a lane to exit it, it is up to you to do so safely and not for other drivers to keep out of your way. If you want to live here, learn the rules before griping about them. If you don't like the rules, easyJet have some very good flights back to the rain and the coalition. La Zenia is cleaned daily, but not very well. Cala Capitan and Campoamor haven’t been done at all and there are large holes in the sand at Cala Capitan. None of them have walkways even near to the sea: how can the disabled access the water? There are no beach loungers, no cafés, no pedal boats and the sand is filthy. The streets are filthy, too, and weed-ridden. As a tourist I would not return to Orihuela Costa. Given that the restaurants, cafés, shops and apartment owners rely on a few months of tourism to survive, how many will be here in 2015? Name withheld (by email)

Cowboy victims MY wife and I recently returned to England from Alcoy and were recommended someone who was cheap and offered a personal removals service. When our belongings arrived we were horrified at the amount of damage. A brand new fridgefreezer had dents in the top and down the door, which he said were there when he collected it. He handed me a four-inch splinter of wood he had broken off the top of a pine dresser. A Tiffany lampshade which he promised to take great care of will cost in the region of €175 to repair. Finally, the handle of my power washer was broken in two. Due to arthritis I told him at the outset that I was unable to assist in carrying heavy things. When he turned up at our UK residence he was alone, meaning I was forced to endure the pain of lifting heavy items. Let this be a lesson. Cheap he might have been, but was not a member of the BMA. I HAVE to disagree with Kate Ferry’s letter about Nora Johnson’s article on the recession. She states that over 50 of her friends were pushed into taking out credit by their banks and clearly thinks that individuals have no responsibility for their actions. The banks forced them to do it! Good Samaritan ON June 2 on the AP-7 from Alicante airport to Valencia, our hire car broke down in the middle of the motorway. A young man in a pick-up truck put his own life at risk to help us and called the police who had to stop all traffic to get the car off the road. Fortunately, no-one was hurt. Pessimistic about England’s chances A FIFA survey has shown that England fans are the second most pessimistic fans at the World Cup with just 4 per cent believing their team will win. Fifty-three per cent of English said they don’t care if England win or lose. Are they right to be pessimistic, and are you surprised so many are not bothered - are you?

elbow pads must be made available to all rampaging mobs. Water pressure must not exceed X amount per square inch. All water must be filtered and tested for impurities before use. I mean the list goes on and on. The poor old operators will be petrified of using the machine in case they finish up in court for GBH. No, I shall be very surprised to see the introduction of water cannon onto the streets of GB. Talking of jobsworths, was it not also interesting to be reliably informed that it took top scientists four days and 30 attempts - in controlled temperature laboratory conditions - to make an explosive from mixing liquids together? (Apparently it has to also be dried to a powder before use.) Not much chance of some toe rag managing that after a few minutes in the loo of a 747. Mmm! GHOSTS: Some people are attuned to a spiritual plane, some are not.

W

HEN five successful British writers revealed their belief in ghosts they based their stories on personal experience. Did they open themselves to ridicule? Apparently not. Studies show that 48 per cent of Americans believe in ghosts. Given that Britain is more ghostfriendly, I would expect the British percentage of believers to be higher. I never had a problem coming to terms with apparitions or the supernatural. This may be due to their being self-evident. As a child, mother would say, “it is the living, not the dead who harm you.” An Ordinary Seaman on the MV Grecian, I recall a night time

passage approaching Gibraltar. Entering the tool room far below the waterline two engineers chanced upon an Arab sitting cross-legged on an oil drum. Presuming the youngster to be a stowaway the pair approached. It was then they realised that the figure was an apparition. Horrified, both men fled to the upper deck. I can testify to their extreme shock. Only when the ship reached

London did the captain reveal that the spectre was evident during earlier voyages. It was that of a youngster who, on stowing away in Tripoli, was fatally sealed in a hold. A ship’s lookout will ring the fo’c’sle bell once if a ship is seen to starboard, twice if to port and three times if ahead. Through the stormy night the bell constantly rang accurately as we approached the English Channel.

Only at dawn was it realised the lookout was nowhere near the bell but was on the upper bridge. Sent to tie the maverick bell the lookout returned to say that it had been disabled the previous night. Who then had been tolling the bell’s warnings? Before retiring to Spain I lived in an old manse. Think of the sitcom, ‘To the Manor Born’ and you have it. The apparition there made no

secret of its presence. We accepted each other and I christened her Casperette. Rarely did I mention her to visitors but many guests were startled by her unexpected presence. One night, using the guest room, a lady colleague stayed overnight. Just as we settled down we were shocked by an atrocious banging on both our bedroom doors. Running to the landing we found it to be empty. Neither of us made a big deal of it. However, I am convinced that Casperette was consumed by jealousy at the presence of my female guest. On several occasions I stayed at Widdecombe Manor in Chagford, Devon. R. D Blackmore’s classic, Lorna Doone, was based on the manor’s 17th Century romantic tragedy. My experiences whilst a guest would make your hair stand on end as they did mine. I have never questioned life on a spiritual plane. Some are attuned to it, some are not.

Epilepsy report in Spain

EPILEPSY is one of the most common neurological diseases in Spain. According to the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), each year between 12,400 and 22,000 new cases are detected and diagnosed. “Thanks to the advances that have occurred in both diagnosis of the disease and pharmacological arsenal, the prognosis of patients is much improved,” said Doctor Juan Mercade Cerda, co-ordinator of the Epilepsy Study Group of the Spanish Society Neurology (SEN). “In general, patients can control their disease and seizures well with medication, or achieve a spontaneous and prolonged remission not requiring chronic treatment, but it is estimated about 25 per cent of epilepsy is not controlled completely. “It is these patients who require more effort by the scientific community to find new targets for action, and by the administration to improve their attendance.” According to data by the White Paper on Epilepsy in Spain, conducted by SEN, epilepsy is one of the diseases affecting the quality of life of patients with 70 per cent believing their illness affects them or their quality of life and more than 60 per cent of patients have had their academic performance affected.

Tips for perfect summer hands, feet and nails

NAILS suffer a little more in summer than winter due to the heat and dry atmosphere, so here are some tips to keep yours healthy throughout the summer season. Hydrate your hands and feet daily. This is the first commandment when dealing with nails, be they finger or toe. Use a good moisturiser and massage it in really well all over your hands and feet; it will reach the nails in good time. Oil your nails. Nails are made up of dead cells and contain a lot of keratin and, as such, it is essential to keep them well oiled if you want them to grow evenly and strongly. Pay attention to your cuticles. Your hands and feet will automatically look

much better if you push back your cuticles - just remember to oil them first or you may hurt yourself. File your nails frequently. Follow the line of the finger or toe and always file in the same direction, try and avoid filing the sides of your nails too much, it will make them weaker.

When painting your nails remember to apply a base coat as this will make your nail varnish last much longer; also if you apply colour directly to the nail it often makes it look yellow when you

remove the colour. Another fashion this summer seems to be texture - not just colour. The ultimate trendy look consists of having matching colour palettes with different textures. These can be achieved by using a contrast of matt and shiny. Paint one of your nails a different, but complementary, colour from the rest of them. It makes for a funky look that has been on the catwalks for some months now. Match your nail colours to your lipstick. It may seem old-fashioned but that look is back.

GM mosquitoes could help wipe out malaria A GENETICALLY modified mosquito could be the key to wiping out malaria. The disease is spread by infected female mosquitoes which pass on the disease as they bite humans. Now, British scientists at London’s Imperial College say they could have found a way of wiping out the disease by developing a genetically modified species that produces just male offspring. The researchers looked to

genetics to disrupt the breeding of mosquitoes so fewer females are produced, which should see mosquitoes die out within a few generations. In lab tests, they modified mosquitoes to produce sperm that will only create males. They believe if this could be recreated in the wild, the female population would ultimately die out. Since 2000, increased prevention and control measures have reduced

A jab against heart attacks A NEW injection scientists say could be available within 10 years, could reduce the risk of heart attack by up to 90 per cent. The jab would act like a one off ‘vaccination’ and uses DNA-editing technology to ‘knock out’ a liver gene which is believed to raise levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. It has already been tested successfully on mice, reducing blood concentrations of cholesterol in days. It’s believed it will have the same effect on humans. The research was carried out at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) in America.

Bare rooftop and rocky gardens gardening challenges, but great potential, this week. The first was a house on a 600-square-metre plot cut out of a mountainside

so that the back boundary is a shear wall of rock and likewise half the length of the two sides of the plot, and the level plot is a slab

of rock with no earth. The second was a 100square-metre penthouse with 400 square metres of terraces surrounded by

metre-high solid walls on three sides and four-metre high walls on the fourth. The two properties have similar gardening challenges and a good start point would be to buy and study the book ‘Apartment Gardens - Mediterranean Style’ as both need the use of containers of various shapes and sizes and raised beds. Each have the need to mix up good planting mediums using good compost, worm compost and sacks of dried sheep or goat manure from a local agricultural co-operative. Since unglazed terracotta containers dry out quickly plastic containers painted in attractive colours or placed in terracotta containers are called for. Also growing tables would be useful for growing succulents, herbs and vegetables. The rock-walled rear garden of the house and

the two side terraces with high back walls of the apartment can be developed in traditional patio styles separated from the more open front garden and terrace by evergreen leaved and citrus fruit trees in large containers. As neither property has the benefit of the natural shade of mature trees, the natural shade at various times of the day needs to be established before fixing awnings, planning any plants and indeed where to locate a number of tables and chairs. Beyond that, climberglad gazebos could be considered alongside the walls or free standing. Run by Linda and Geoff Rowe since August 2005 in Puente Don Manuel,

Alcaucin, the village has grown with Arkwrights. “There was nothing here before,” explained Linda. “Now there are so many more businesses, Even the Spanish bar says if it wasn’t for us his trade would be well down.” It is no wonder Arkwrights is such a success with its friendly staff and wide range of groceries, many unavailable elsewhere in Spain. Linda said: “Attention to detail is the secret. That and lots of hard work! We listen to what our customers want. If we don’t have it we will try to get it. We will get anything for anyone –

Spanish dog gives birth to green puppies A PAIR of Spanish dog breeders based in Valladolid, Manuel and Aida Molina, were shocked after one of their dogs gave birth to two green puppies. Dog breeder Aida Molina said: “I thought the puppies were dirty and tried to clean them, but the colour wouldn’t come off.” The animals were smaller and weaker than the other pups in the litter; unfortunately, the female pup died shortly after birth. The cause of death is now being investigated by local vet Daniel Valderde, who added: “There are no other recorded cases of this happening in Spanish scientific literature. I am carrying out virological and bacteriological tests to try and find an answer. Although a possible explanation could be the exposure to a substance called biliverdin, which is found in the placenta.” The surviving male puppy has begun to gradually lose his colouring, although according to experts the animal’s health is not related to its unusual fur. Although unknown in Spain, a similar case was reported in the UK in 2012. A Golden Labrador gave birth to a green puppy. In that case, as appears to be happening to the Spanish pup, the colour faded within a few weeks to leave a more natural colour.

Audi unveil revamped A7 Sportback AUDI has spared no effort in revising the A7 Sportback. The spacious five-door coupe is now even more powerful and attractive - thanks to new engine configurations, new transmissions, new headlights, tail lights and new infotainment systems. The new A7 Sportback combines the emotional appeal and sportiness of a coupe with the comfort of a sedan and the functional benefits of an Avant, says the German manufacturer. Back when the A7 Sportback debuted in 2010, Audi was aiming to set new standards in car design, embracing an athletic aesthetic and elegance in grand style. Its long engine hood, sporty, flowing C-pillars and the sharply dropping rear end were designed to create a dynamic overall impression. The revised version of the five-door model, measuring 4.97 metres in length, now has additional striking, sporty features.

A7 SPORTBACK: The spacious five-door coupe is now even more powerful and attractive. The most striking changes are to the Singleframe grille, bumpers, tailpipes and headlights. LED tech-

nology is now standard; upon request, Audi can supply Matrix LED headlights, which light the road optimally without causing glare for other road users. Combined with the Matrix LED headlights, dynamic turn signals are also installed at the front; they come standard at the rear. The body of the new Audi A7 Sportback consists primarily of aluminium and high-tech steel grades. It is extraordinarily lightweight

and designed for maximum comfort in terms of noise. The cargo space under the long, electrically driven trunk lid has a base capacity of 535 litres. When the rear seat backs are folded down it grows to 1,390 litres. The sporty style of the exterior is echoed in the car’s interior. The dominant element is the horizontal line surrounding the driver and passenger. The dashboard gives an

impression of lightness and elegance. The new interior materials, including the aluminium/Beaufort walnut inlay and Valcona leather, are impressive for their finish. The colour palette has been redesigned, offering five colour options even for the seats. The new Audi A7 Sportback is confident and relaxed to drive. The front seats can be optionally equipped with ventilation and massage functions, and there are four seat versions to choose from. The MMI radio operating system comes standard; it can be supplemented as an option with a head-up display that projects all important information onto the windshield. To start out, Audi is offering the new A7 Sportback with a choice of five powerful and highly efficient engines: two petrol and three diesel units. Their power rating ranges from 160kW (218hp) to 245kW (333hp), and all of them comply with the Euro 6

emission standard. Many aspects of the 3.0 TDI clean diesel with 200kW (272hp) have been newly developed. In the ‘ultra’ version with 160kW (218hp) and front-wheel drive, the three-litre V6 uses an average of just 4.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. The top-of-the-range engine, the 4.0 TFSI, is available in the Audi S7 Sportback. It delivers 331kW (450hp) of power and uses innovative COD (cylinder on demand) technology. The 3.0 TDI biturbo clean diesel, which delivers 235kW (320hp), works with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission; all other engine configurations have a sevenspeed S tronic transmission. The Audi drive select dynamic handling system is standard. Options include dynamic steering, two sport suspension versions and adaptive air suspension; on the S7 Sportback, the air suspension has a firmer setup. The new Audi A7 Sportback will begin arriving at dealerships in late summer. Its base price in Germany will be €51,300. The Audi S7 Sportback is available starting at €82,300.

Ringing up the vanity numbers THERE are vanity number plates, then there are vanity number plates. Kahn bought it for a trifling £440,000 (€550,000). At the moment the plate is registered on a Bugatti Veyron hypercar. The plate is valued at 10 times the price of the car. Apparently Kahn has already turned down an offer of £8.5 million for the plate from a potential buyer

in the Middle East. Kahn bought the plate from Essex County Council which had it registered to a Volvo S80 used by its chairman. The council sold it off to raise funds to train young drivers. At the time it was a record price for a private sale.
