Here we go again Prosecutor asks for demolition of 13 houses in Partaloa HOMEOWNERS in Spain have suffered another setback in the continuing saga of planning chaos that plagues various parts of Spain. This time it is not only the British who are affected but also Belgians, who purchased houses in the hamlet of Piedra Amarilla, Partaloa, where the State Prosecutor is asking for the demolition of 13 houses. The prosecution is not accusing these EU citizens of any wrongdoing. A criminal case has been brought against the promoter and the company, Lakes Vega SL, and other individuals for alleged planning crimes and corruption. As obliged to do so by the Penal Code, the prosecutor is asking for demolition of the houses and states that the promoter should compensate the buyers. However, the normal chain of events is that the house is demolished first and the victims then start an uphill struggle to obtain
compensation. The problem is that, as seen in Vera and Cantoria, in practice the victims are left without a house and without compensation. Maura Hillen, President of the homeowners association, AUAN, said: “This nonsensical scenario is set out in Article 319.3 of the Penal Code. We are asking for this article to be changed. It does not make sense that the only people who are really punished for these types of crimes are
the victims. We petitioned Señor Esteban Gonzalez Pons and other senior figures of the Partido Popular on this issue when we met with them several weeks ago. They promised to study our proposed change but we have heard nothing. SINGLE people looking for love will head to Velez Rubio and Velez Blanco for the second ‘Singles’ meeting on June 28 and 29. Excursions, speed dating, laughter therapy activities, guided tours and hiking trails are planned for a weekend in which to find love in Los Velez. That’s the aim of the initiative of the local council that has the support of the provincial government.
“It’s a very original way to promote Los Velez and to forge relationships between people without a partner,” said María Vazquez, Head of Culture for Almeria. The meeting of ‘singles’, is aimed at single, widowed or separated people between the ages of 30 and 50 from towns in Almeria, Lorca, Alicante and even the Canary Islands taking part last year.

More tourists Almeria-bound “ALMERIA is in fashion,” said Javier Garcia, Head of Tourism for Almeria Province, at a presentation for the tourist operation this summer. And no wonder, since the figures of this new plan will confirm at least 150,000 international tourists who have chosen Almeria as a holiday destination for the summer months, surpassing the 126,000 from the previous year.
The operation, which runs from June to October, extending the usual summer season, aims to attract tourists from Norway, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Serbia, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, UK, Germany and France. With a powerful campaign for international flights, promoted by the Provincial Tourism Service, this
summer will see 51 weekly flights with nearly 150,000 tourists confirmed to the towns of Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido, Mojacar, Vera, Almeria, Nijar and Vicar. The tourists, travelling on charter flights direct to the province, will spend on average at least five nights and have the choice of several excursions, including the Tabernas Desert and Los Velez.

Award winners TABERNAS BADLANDS: ‘Heavy drought’ area. IN 1994, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated June 17 as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Desertification affects more than 110 countries, among them Spain and in particular Almeria where the Tabernas Desert, Europe’s only desert, is located. This day is set aside to make the general public aware of the problem and the necessity for international co-operation to fight the spread of desertification. In recent years, there have been worries of creeping desertification of other areas of Spain, particularly parts of Andalucia.

Summer healthcare bolstered A TOTAL of 24 professionals will reinforce Health Centres in coastal zones of Almeria Province this summer. The Health Council plans to hire a total of 10 doctors, 10 nurses and four support staff, resulting in more than 1,500 working days. This

Port arrest for shoe drugs man AGENTS of the Guardia Civil have arrested a 22year-old man from Murcia after he was found with half a kilo of hashish hidden in his trainers. The arrest took place in Almeria Port, as passengers disembarked the boat Las Palmas de Gran Canari on arrival from the Port of Nador (Morocco). The officers noticed that the passenger appeared to have
difficulty walking as he approached the baggage survey zone. He also showed signs of nervousness which led to him being pulled over for a search. Agents found a double layer in the sole of his shoes, between which were hidden 55 pellets of hashish of approximately 100 grammes each. The man was arrested and put at the disposal of Number 4 Court in Almeria.

Tourism gala awards ALMERIA City Hall is celebrating the first ‘Gala of Tourism and Mediterranean’ today, (Thursday) in the Patio de los Naranjos. The mayor of Almeria, Luis Rogelio Rodríguez Comendador, has announced the first four winners for this year. The awards go to people or companies who play a valuable role in the promotion of tourism in the province. The winners are singer David Bisbal, journalist Carlos Herrera, the website Booking.com and Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Borrego. According to the mayor all the award winners will be present at the event. The prize will be a replica of the Iglesia de Las Salinas, one of the wonders of the Cabo de Gata.

The PP criticises ‘Albox Frog Pond’
THE Partido Popular (PP) has called the outdoor swimming pool in Albox an ‘Olympic-sized mess’. They consider it ‘unacceptable’ that the socialist-run council has spent nearly €200,000 of taxpayers’ money on a pool which bears no comparison with the planned pool in the sports centre project of 2007. This was promised by the PSOE at zero cost to the people of Albox. The PP has criticised Mayor Rogelia Mena, accusing him of ‘conning’ the townspeople with a municipal pool of ridiculous dimensions,
(25 metres x 12 metres) for a town the size of Albox with more than 12,000 inhabitants. He was providing a pool of the same size as those in Zurgena and Cantoria, towns which had less than 3,500 inhabitants. According to PP spokesman Juan Pedro Perez Quiles, the ‘mega sports centre’ promised by the PSOE has become a ‘mega failure’ of the socialist government and a big problem for Albox. Mayor Mena has responded to the PP’s criticisms, saying: “It seems that apart from the members of Albox PP
everyone knows that before we had a pool and now we have two, an open-air pool, somewhat smaller than before and which serves for two months in summer, and a covered pool which will open for 10 months a year.” For the mayor, the sports facilities being built for the municipality were ‘magnificent’ and he criticised the PP, likening them to the dog in the manger, who neither eats nor lets others eat, in reference to protests in previous summers when the town had no pool.

The eight province cycle challenge A CYCLIST from Sevilla has set off on a journey which will take in the eight provinces of Andalucia.

Zurgena library to open soon THE people of Zurgena will soon have a new facility in the shape of a public library. The town hall is putting the final touches to the renovated library, which will be located in its former building in the Plaza de los Martires. Zurgena Mayor Luis Diaz commented: “With the library, we add another service to offer to our citizens,” adding that the space would not be “just a place to study or borrow books. Although the law does not oblige municipalities under 5,000 inhabitants to have this service, it is not an excuse for not having it available to the townspeople.” The library is not only for the Spanish, however, as there is a section for English books and DVDs. The town hall is also happy to take donations; people interested in donating books are requested to contact the town hall beforehand.

Third ‘Noche en Blanco’ a big hit in Huercal-Overa THE town of HuercalOvera celebrated its Third ‘Noche en Blanco’ on
Friday night and it proved to be a great success. Thousands of people
from the town and further afield took to the streets to enjoy the atmosphere and the activities. The evening kicked off with the mayor Domingo Fernandez inviting everyone to enjoy their shopping and activities, and by thanking all the businesses for making the evening possible. There then followed a childrens and adults fashion parade, with clothes from different establishments in the town. The Ria Pita dance association took to the streets to bring a touch of colour and flamenco to the night with the H2O Sports Centre organising a Zumbathon. The Plaza Mayor held a concert by guitarist Guillermo

NEWS Vera revives a tradition THE Revival in Vera of the Moors and Christians parade was a great success, on the second day of celebrations in honour of its patron la Virgen de las Angustias. On Saturday afternoon the expectation was high, and the Plaza Mayor and surrounding streets were abuzz awaiting the ceremony that was brought back this year after more than a century without it taking place. The dramatisation of the taking of Vera, and the atmosphere of cordiality between the two groups, was the keynote. On Sunday there was a floral offering, and on Monday a procession to the patron.

Ten arrested in Almeria in alleged diesel fuel tax fraud OPERATION Nehar conducted by the Guardia Civil and the Tax Department
has resulted in the arrest of 10 people in Almeria. The arrests were made for
alleged fraud in the sale of diesel fuel. Police also made six searches in petrol stations, industrial buildings and private addresses. Police sources in Almeria indicated to Europa Press that the action in the province had focused on the regions of Almanzora and Los Velez, where the plot in Almeria Province of allegedly selling adulterated diesel fuel to petrol stations was unravelled. It is believed that payments valuing more than €5.5 million on the special hydrocarbon tax have been avoided. The agents arrested three people in Cantoria, three in Velez Rubio, two in Palomares and one in Albox and Huercal-Overa. Three searches took place in Cantoria, two in Velez Rubio, one in Velez Blanco.

A face-lift for Vera Playa’s boulevard VERA Town Hall is finalising the refurbishment of several streets in
the area of Vera Playa. Among the work carried out is the transformation of the Avenida Barcelona, one of the main streets in the naturist area. This is the broad avenue that leads to the Hotel Vera Playa Club, and in which a number of shops are located aimed mainly at providing a service for visitors. Councillor Belen Carnicer said: “It has been
a major effort by Vera Town Hall, but also a big show of support for local commerce, and an important tourist area in Vera.” Works have consisted mainly of improving roundabouts and flowerbeds with the use of artificial turf, new lighting, the creation of new areas and well marked signage for the location of urban waste containers.
“The transformation of this area has been spectacular and in record time, taking into account budgetary constraints. “Undoubtedly, this area is one of the prime attractions of Vera; therefore, the town hall has invested in improvements that residents and visitors will enjoy in the summer season ahead,” Carnicer commented.
Everyone’s a winner in Partaloa friendly THERE were probably a few aching limbs and sore heads in Partaloa on Monday morning for those who took part in the England versus Spain football match. With the World Cup in mind a friendly game of football was hosted by Andy and Antonio of the EL Poli Bar. Both teams were made up of mostly over 40s with the Spanish team slightly having the edge with a few more youthful players. This seemed to

England Manager Andy made a few changes which were effective as England fought back and with the clock ticking down and trailing 5-4 they managed to level the game at 5-5. handle the pressure. One penalty ended up in the nearby swimming pool, while another was crashed against the bar, but in the end it was England who won through, 3-1, thanks to some good saves from the goalkeeper. So England lifted the trophy, and on a day when football and friendship were the winners, everybody headed to the bar to slake their thirst and enjoy a barbecue.

Barbara Beaumont Napier A DARK, pagan shadow crept into the village and stole another. This time it was none other than Barbara Beaumont Napier. She was a vivacious California girl, always pleasant and packed full of energy. During her prolonged illness she continued daily to demonstrate her immense strength of character while enduring constant pain and discomfort. Known locally for her charity work, the national
papers did big write-ups about her a few years back. I then jumped on the bandwagon and wrote one too. Later in the week when
I bumped into her, she commented: “You made me into a Mother Teresa and didn’t say enough about the charities.” She was that way, direct, well-oriented and unique. Barbara was from the old school preferring to give and share with the less fortunate. And, everyone who knew her, knew that! What a TRAGIC LOSS for all of us.

Fire-plane crash verdict INFOCA’S firefighting plane in which a pilot died in an accident in Seron, made an “accompanied water drop with a sharp turn to the right.” So says the interim report of the Committee on Accidents and Incidents of the Civil Aviation under the Ministry of Development. The report concludes that the manoeuvre led
to the ‘loss of control’ of the aircraft, causing it to crash. The incident occurred at around 2.20pm on May 25 in the Recondo area of the Sierra de los Filabres. The pilot, a woman in her 40s with more than 5,000 hours of flying experience, was flying her cargo plane, an Air Tractor AT-802, on firefighting duties close to the town of Seron.

Two minors held for 16 robberies TWO minors who allegedly stole to order have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Garrucha. Following a two-month investigation, the two juveniles were charged with a total of 16 thefts, the majority committed in apartments and hotels

She placed sweets in a gigantic jar and asked people to guess how many were in it. Zoe managed to raise €103, and F.A.C.E.

Funding for Dalias GABRIEL AMAT, president of the provincial council has visited Dalias this week to award them an investment of €440,000 for improvements to the town. The money will be used to improve paving and street areas, as well as sanitation, replacement of rubber flooring in children’s areas, improvements to water pressure and some basic infrastructure. The projects also include completion of works in the Celin neighbourhood. Amat has asked the town council to approve the works.

Mojacar restaurant evacuated EMERGENCY services in Almeria have reported that 25 people were evacuated from a restaurant and adjoining businesses on Saturday evening due to a fire. The restaurant on the Paseo del Mediterraneo in the area known as Vista los Angeles, in Mojacar, evacuated 25 people. The fire began at roughly 6.30pm in the hot buffet area. Guardia Civil, Local Police and fire fighting services attended the fire immediately and evacuated the adjoining business premises also as a precautionary measure. The fire caused damage to the hot buffet area, the kitchen and dining areas. However, nobody was injured. Fire fighters reported that the fire was extinguished at approximately 8.30pm.

Ex Barca boss in Neymar tax case THE former president of FC Barcelona, Sandro Rosell, has been summoned to testify before Spain’s High Court tomorrow (Friday) as part of an investigation into alleged financial crimes regarding the Neymar signing. Judge Pablo Ruz handed down the decision in a ruling which took into account a Tax Agency report stating that the club failed to make tax payments of €9 million between 2011 and 2013. Reportedly, there is also a Tax Agency document which outlines possible fraud of €2.6 million for the 2014 tax year. Also summoned by Judge Ruz are employees from the football club’s auditor, Deloitte, to appear as expert witnesses. The court has requested a number of documents, including those relating to the voluntary tax payment of €13.5 million made by FC Barcelona after a complaint of financial wrongdoing was lodged.
The voluntary payment does not exempt FC Barcelona from the charge, as the money was paid after the judicial proceedings had already started. Spain’s Tax Agency has accused Barcelona of committing tax fraud to the tune of €9 million in the signing of Brazilian player Neymar. The Catalan club had originally stated that the transfer had cost €57.1 million. However, selling club Santos said it had only received €17.1 million for the highly-rated player. After investigations it transpired that Barcelona had paid a €40 million fee to the company N&N, which is owned by Neymar’s parents. The club being implicated in the financial wrongdoing forced Rosell to resign as club president and an investigation to be opened. Josep Maria Bartomeu, Rosell’s replacement, waived a confidentiality clause which revealed that the actual fee paid for Neymar was €86.2 million.

WhatsApp traffic alerts produce first arrest THE Guardia Civil has made its first arrest, in Pontevedra, of someone involved in posting traffic alerts of police action on social networking groups. The suspect had been posting traffic alerts through a group on WhatsApp. Sources said the individual not only alerted other users as to the presence of traffic radars and breath-test controls, but also he could have notified other users about other sensitive aspects of police activity. A Guardia Civil agent said the messages were not just about where the traffic controls were situated, but also about personal details and descriptions of
Guardia Civil officers. In the past few months there has been an increased awareness of the emergence of these types of groups on WhatsApp. Social media web pages and applications such as Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter are generating concern within the Guardia Civil, as they reduce the efficiency of traffic and alcohol checkpoints and can expose private, third party images. However, they also understand that these types of groups can help prevent and report any crimes witnessed. The judge has established a gagging order, so it is as yet unknown what charges he may face.

From July 1 until August 31, there will be an access point and specialist lifesavers in attendance at the Ampolla beach for those with mobility problems. Free keep-fit sessions will be held on the beach three mornings a week while other activities there and at the Portet beach will include Taichi, Zumba, aerobics and swimming lessons. This year for the first time there will be a 300-square-metre floating platform off Ampolla with inflatable games for children and adults.

A scapegoat? T
HE driver is to blame for the Santiago de Compostela train crash that left 79 people dead. So says the official report into the tragedy nearly a year on. It is hard to argue with that conclusion when one hears that the train was going at around 190kph when the speed limit was just 80kph. Revelations that the driver was distracted by a phone call from the guard at the crucial moment cannot exonerate him - the driver’s first responsibility is to the safety of his passengers. But pointing the finger of blame at the train’s driver, Francisco José Garzón Amo, who has been charged with 79 counts of homicide by professional recklessness, is not enough. Why, in a state of the art train on a modern railway system, was such an excessive speed permitted? In this day of computerised
driving aids, the technology exists to automatically prevent such accidents. Indeed much of Spain’s vaunted high-speed rail network has just such systems in place. But for some reason - the suspicion being to save money - the stretch of line which included this bend, acknowledged before the incident as highly dangerous, did not have them fitted. Such mechanisms were fitted soon after the accident in three places approaching the scene to make sure a similar accident could not happen again. As so often the sound of a stable door being slammed shut too late. The driver should not be left to face the music alone. Those responsible for not ensuring the safety of the passengers, and that means not just local managers, but also people at boardroom level, should also be forced to face their responsibilities in court.

Tainted money to swell GDP THE proceeds of drugs money and vice are to be included in Spain’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecasts. The national statistics institute INE will begin taking these into account next October when it will also be using ESA-2010, Europe’s new accounting system, and a new population census, it revealed. So far INE has not given details of the economic impact of these hidden but important sectors on national statistics. The UK recently estimated that drugs and prostitution contributed £10 billion (€12.28 billion) to the country’s economy. The UK government has
also announced its intention of adding these proceeds to its GDP estimate after the summer, as will Italy. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Estonia and Slovenia already do so. All other EU member states’ statistics bodies will substitute the ESA-95 method currently used for estimates with the ESA2010 system in the autumn. Nevertheless, the decision to include what the EU’s statistics agency Eurostat described as the “informal economy” in their GDPs was contemplated in the previous method. “Nor is this adaptation solely European, it is also global,” a Eurostat spokesman said.
May’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment figure of 24,604 was the greatest reduction since 1998, accumulating its 10th fall in as many months. A further 198,320 people were registered as Social Security contributors, a statistic that is generally regarded as the true gauge of job-creation.

Families owe less FAMILY debt fell once more in April and now stands at €771.6 billion. The 0.35 per cent reduction on the statistics for March was produced by a 0.07 per cent fall in consumer loans for personal or household purposes, which fell to €166.26 billion. Mortgage loans also fell by 0.47 per cent to €602.29 billion but despite the reduction, these still account for 80 per cent of family debt.

Tax give and take from the Hacienda SPAIN’S tax-collecting agency AEAT will not pursue outstanding debts of less than €3. These sums are usually the balance owing on IRPF income tax returns and the cost of recovering them is greater than the cash eventually received, AEAT announced. Taxpayers with amounts like these still outstanding will not be pursued any further on strictly economic grounds, said a notice in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). This cannot be interpreted as a softening on the part of Hacienda, as the tax inspectors’ union IHE recently called for fiscal fraud to be declared a prison offence. They suggested raising the threshold for tax fraud beyond which it becomes a crime, from the current €120,000 to €600,000. In return penalties would become more severe.

Industrial output 4year-high
INDUSTRIAL output in Spain was up 4.3 per cent year on year in April - the biggest growth in four years. That means that Spain has now posted six months in a row of rising industrial output according to the National Statistics Institute’s seasonally adjusted figures. It is a boost to the country which only emerged from five years of on/off recession in the middle of 2013. Since then there has been a small but sustained growth in GDP with manufacturing leading the way. One of the most important industries for exports is the car industries with manufacturers like Nissan, Volkswagen and Seat all increasing production in recent months.

Franklin knew the importance of saving and was able to put enough aside to retire pretty early. “Rather go to bed without dinner than to rise in debt” How many of us have fallen into the trap of living a lifestyle we can’t afford? Franklin recognised the dangers of this and warned people not to live beyond their means. Avoiding debt is essential to financial stability while overspending in order to live a certain lifestyle is just fools-play.

It is true a community pool must meet these standards and must register a responsible person who can be held legally liable if the rules are not complied with. If the pool is not properly fenced
and a child drowns, the responsible person can be held liable, for example.

Finance world’s reaction to Spanish abdication THE markets barely reacted to the news that King Juan Carlos was handing over to his son, Felipe. The abdication was received with an interest that had no impact on share prices that day. The Ibex 35 - Spain’s equivalent of the UK’s FTSE 100 - finished with a 0.27 per cent increase, attaining this year’s high of 10,827 points. The bond yield hovered at around 150 basis points and that day, a Monday, finished at 147 compared with 149 the previous Friday. The abdication news was similarly absorbed without repercussions by the international stock, bonds, currency and commodity markets. Spain’s biggest financial names were equally unperturbed by the abdication but all had only praise for Spain’s transformation during Juan Carlos’s 39 years on the throne. Pablo Isla (Inditex chairman), Juan Rosell (president of Spain’s confederation of industry, CEOE, Alicia Alcocer Koplowitz (FCC) and Emilio Botin (Santander chairman) were amongst those who acknowledged the country’s debt to the monarch.
RELAXED: Markets barely reacted to the king’s announcement. “Don Juan Carlos is without any doubt the best king Spain has ever had,” said Florentino Perez, president of the ACS construction and services group as well as Real Madrid football club. “We should never forget that he stood up to the enemies of freedom.” Candido Mendez, secretary general of the UGT trade union also paid grudging tribute. “Over and above what has happened in recent years, his contribution to consolidating democracy is totally positive,” he declared.

Boris Becker saves villa at last minute TENNIS LEGEND Boris Becker has managed to save his holiday home on the Balearic Island of Mallorca at the last minute. He has had to pay up for the huge bill he had accrued with a local builder just as the property was about to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The enormous, 2,900 square metre, property was confiscated by the local Mallorca authorities as Becker had not paid a local builder the sum of €391,000 for various works he did on the site including carpentry, plumbing jobs and even the surfacing of a basketball court. The three time winner of Wimbledon, currently training world number two tennis seed Novak Djokovic, was told that his home would be under the hammer for €7 million. Becker saved the nine bedroom
mansion with just minutes to spare when his lawyer handed over the €430,000 (original sum plus the fine) to the presiding Mallorca judge. This is not the first time Becker has had to save his home from an auction as in 2012 he was in the same courts system over some unpaid gardening bills with came to €359,011. Since leaving the tennis scene Becker’s life has been beset by a series of scandals including being caught with his trousers down, literally, with model Angela Ermakova on a staircase in a London restaurant while his pregnant wife was at their home waiting for him. Who knows to what extent Juan Carlos was also affected by recent unjust claims that he knew beforehand about the attempted coup of February 1981? Revelations about his womanising have been doing the rounds for decades but were never a big deal in a country where money and not sex is at the heart of the biggest leadership scandals. That is why his dodgy son-in-law’s bent business dealings with local and regional governments tipped the balance. Worse still, the royal hip and the story detailing the full extent of Urdangarin’s alleged corruption both broke at roughly same time. Own goal ENRIQUE LOPEZ, a Constitutional Tribunal judge, has had to resign. Controversy surrounded his appointment when he was directly nominated by the government last year. His impartiality was questioned as he was formerly a PP member and still close to the party. His opponents had the last laugh when he was recently arrested in Madrid at 7.30am one morning. He had jumped a traffic light on his motorbike while four times over the drink-driving limit and not wearing a crash helmet. Must have been quite a party.

Switzerland Pledges To End Banking Secrecy Switzerland’s centuries’ old tradition of banking secrecy is coming to an end. It has pledged to collect tax related information from its financial institutions and automatically share the data with other governments each year. Switzerland is the world’s biggest offshore centre, with $2 trillion in assets. Its prized banking secrecy has been slowly eroded under international pressure to increase tax transparency, particularly since the global financial crisis had governments looking for ways to increase tax revenue. It has now taken a decisive step, and joined with other Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in committing to automatic exchange of information between jurisdictions. This was a historic move for Switzerland. Within a couple of years it will start to automatically hand over details of bank accounts to other countries. The Financial Times described it as

Swiss Economics minister, Johann Schneider-Ammann, acknowledged that the deal would end “old style” banking secrecy. With Singapore also signing up, OECD tax director, Pascal SaintAmans, told a press conference: “It’s clearly the end of banking secrecy abused for tax purposes… It
means the governments can really assess the tax owed by people who thought they could hide in other jurisdictions.” Governments across Europe are expecting billions of Euros to be repatriated, as the owners realise they cannot hide the funds offshore any more. The Declaration on Automatic Exchange of Information in Tax Matters was signed at the OECD’s annual ministerial council meeting in Paris in May. It commits signatories to implement the new single global standard on automatic exchange of information. Participating jurisdictions will obtain all client information on bank accounts, and the beneficial ownership of companies and legal structures such as trusts, from their financial institutions. The data will be automatically shared with other governments each year - so not only in cases where tax evasion is suspected. Information includes taxpayers’ bank balances, interest
income, dividends and sales proceeds. According to the OECD, more than 60 countries and jurisdictions have now committed to the early adoption of the global standard. Additional countries are expected to join over the coming months. This single global standard for the automatic exchange of tax information was developed by the OECD and endorsed by the G20 in February. Those countries which have pledged to be early adopters will start to collect data from 31st December 2015. They have set a deadline of September 2017 for the first reporting of investors’ tax details to their home governments. OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría commented: “The commitment by so many countries to implement the new global standard, and to do so quickly, is another major step towards ensuring that tax cheats have nowhere left to hide”. On signing the Declaration, the Swiss government said that it
highlighted its commitment to tackling tax evasion and fraud. This is a public commitment from Switzerland, though it may need to be approved by parliament. The Federal Council has said that it will only agree to tax transparency standards which have a truly global nature and that reciprocity in the exchange of tax data must be guaranteed. Swiss banking secrecy once looked like it was set in stone, but those days are well and truly over. It is time for those who use offshore banks in places like Switzerland to review why they do so and consider if there are more tax efficient places for their funds that better suit their needs. It is important to only ever use tax planning arrangements that are fully compliant here in Spain and you should seek professional advice. Great care at the hands of health service I FEEL that I must put into words my praise for the San Pedro de Alcantara health centre. After I fell very badly onto my face, my husband took me to ‘Urgencias.’ In less than two minutes I was seen by a medic who cleaned and bandaged me, then gave me medication and a tetanus injection. I was seen by a doctor who gave me a thorough physical examination to make sure there was nothing broken or that I had sustained concussion. All in all, a fast and comforting experience that ended up with written instructions (in English) as to what I should and should not do. Out of tune WE had the misfortune of trying to attend a couple of events during the Tuna Festival and Contest in Mojacar. We went to see the musicians and singers perform at 9pm at the Parque Comercial as publicised in the local papers, on the Mojacar Town Hall website, posters and electronic screen in the Parque Comercial. We invited others who had never seen the Tunas and arrived early to get good seats. No Tunas showed up. Later we went with friends, again as announced in all the media, to see the parade of all the Tuna groups which starts in the village and normally ends near the roundabout by the Multi Purpose Building. No Tunas ever showed up. Although I have always loved watching the Tunas, I will never go to these events again. For me, this is a sad ending to what was a wonderful event. M Taylor (by email)

relax or sleep in the afternoon. At the weekend they even play in the morning as they do not have to go to school. This is extremely annoying to me and other neighbours, who are mostly elderly. I usually work early shifts and must get up at 4 or 5am and need to sleep in the afternoon when I come home. I advised the boys’ parents, leaving letters in the post boxes along the entire Pasaje de San Juan in Arroyo de la Miel but that did not help at all. The Centro Cultural Manuel Estepa, with a big place for kids to play ball, is just a three-minute walk from here. I have said to the kids many times that they cannot play ball

False alarms FOR once, I find myself agreeing a lot with Leapy Lee! Especially when he points out that UKIP have no policies apart from their views on Europe and they will in any case be unable to carry them out. I also agree that our mainstream parties should have taken UKIP more seriously but it is true that because Leapy and others constantly warned that UKIP were winning, a lot of people voted for them just because of that. Where those parties failed was not to come out fighting and explain in clear language just why the issues that UKIP benefited from are not real issues at all. Hardly anyone in the UK has personally suffered any damage whatever because Brussels is the way it is. Most people agree that Brussels could do a lot better, but the effects are really negligible. As for the real worries that so
I WAS greatly dismayed when I read the ‘advertising feature’ concerning an Alfaz councillor. I personally know the lady and worked with her when we both taught in the same school. You could not meet a kinder, more honest, hardworking person. She was greatly loved and highly respected by pupils, parents and colleagues alike. As a councillor, she is also just as highly respected. The incident mentioned occurred nine years ago, before this lady entered politics! She had no part in what happened but because it concerned a member of her family, she has bravely suffered the consequences. It seems obvious that the people who paid for this ‘advertising feature’ deliberately waited to use this information in a smear campaign in the week before the European elections. Being a weekly paper they also made sure that there was no time for redress. I can only hope that your readers were wise enough to ignore these filthy tactics used by people who have no qualms in hitting a person when they are down. Shame on them! of ‘bringing our boys/girls back home’, he actually managed to withdraw the whole American army from Afghanistan, thereby handing outright victory to the Taliban; how they must have all loved him for that! This latest incident is so blatant, it borders on an intelligence-insulting exercise which is almost frightening in its pure arrogance. In exchange for one American serviceman, a man whose service record is appearing more and more dubious, and who could in fact turn out to be an actual deserter, he hands over FIVE of the Taliban’s top military leaders! When publicly challenged over the decision, in an endeavour to appear a zealous patriotic president (which of course should be
unquestionable) he weakly waffles in his defence that, ‘whatever it takes, we will bring every one of our troops home’. I’d like to have been a mosquito on the wall during those ‘negotiations’. One for one, perhaps. Even two for one would have been just about acceptable. But five!? No, sorry, Mr President, I think we should all be extremely worried about your motives and deeply suspicious of your actual position in these unsettling times. Well, I don’t often use the blurb for personal subjects, but I have just returned from a weekend in Holland. (I know, I know!) where I did a quick Tele and sang at the birthday party of an old and dear friend of mine. How wonderful it was to just wallow in the world of millionaires, however briefly. The grounds and magnificent rooms of a country mansion, and three bands. A half dozen top performers,

HOSE of you who peruse this blurb on a regular basis will know I have very little time for Barack Obama. I think the man is weak, indecisive and elected for all the wrong reasons. I also maintain his actions regarding the problems of radical Islam are often questionable, to say the least. In fact, I consider some of his rhetoric and decisions in that direction often give rise to suspicions as to where his true loyalties actually lie. The speech some time ago, for example, wherein he declared that Muslims had always had a close and productive association with the USA. Later, of course, this was revealed as a ludicrous statement, with not one predominant example being discovered anywhere in American history. Without a shot being fired (metaphorically at least), before the war was anywhere near being won and under the guise

NTOLERANCE towards the opinions of others is not something the human race can be
proud of. It is the last refuge of those who, unable to debate, resort to sanctimonious posturing, undermining or twisting the opinions of their adversaries. Newspaper columnists enjoy greater freedom than do journalists. FREEDOM OF SPEECH: Newspaper columnists enjoy greater freedom than journalists. part of human dialogue; it is essential to human progress and understanding. If open debate is ever jackbooted then the candles of liberty will be doused throughout Europe. Freedom to express an opinion is meaningless unless an alternative persuasion is encouraged, listened to and accepted for what it is; a belief. There is no more effective intimidatory sanction than the self-righteous fingerwagging of the politically correct lobby. Censorship, denial of opinion or deliberate misinterpre-
tation and news spin make us no better than were the Soviets. It is not exactly forbidden to say this or that or the other, but it is ‘not done.’ Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness. A genuinely unfashionable opinion is almost never given a fair hearing, either in the popular press or in highbrow periodicals. Peter Hitchens said much the same as did George Orwell: “Is there any point in public debate in a society where hardly anyone
has been taught how to think, while millions have been taught what to think?” There is nothing more liberating, educational and inspiring than to listen to informed opinion without it being ridiculed or denied. If zealots fail to control our interpretation of world events they then resort to gagging or sneering at dissident opinion. Have we then entered an information Dark Ages? Is conventionally published news of world events without value because it is first spun to shape
readers opinions? On the contrary, I think we are entering a period of enlightenment thanks to the freer flow of broader opinion via the internet. It is possible for me, a world watcher and geopolitical enthusiast, when scanning newspaper readers’ comments, to separate those reliant on mainstream media from the better informed. Had the internet been invented earlier, I think WW2 would have been avoided as war with modern Russia will. Why? People today are rightfully more cynical of their country’s warmongering propaganda and territorial ambitions. Many true idealists, freethinkers have migrated to the internet. They are not looking at world events through the narrow aperture of the media’s periscope. As whistle-blower Julian Assange said: “This generation is burning the mass media to the ground. We are reclaiming our rights to world history.”

THE BBC has announced details of its Wimbledon 2014 coverage. Ladies champion of 2013 Marion Bartoli will join the commentary team, along with British number one Laura Robson, who sits out this year’s tournament due to injury. The 2014 tournament takes place from June 23 to July 6, with coverage on BBC television, radio and digital. Sue Barker will once again lead the TV coverage of BBC One and Two, while Clare Balding will present on BBC Radio 5 Live. Jimmy Connors returns to the BBC TV line-up, along with regulars including
WIMBLEDON: John McEnroe and Sue Barker. Tim Henman, John McEnroe, Pat Cash, Lindsay Davenport, Tracy Austin, Martina Navratilova, John Lloyd and Virginia Wade. John Inverdale will return to host the nightly Today at Wimbledon show on BBC Two. There will be up to 12 live streams on the red button and online, more than ever before. Andy Murray will also write a regular column in the lead up to
the tournament, as he attempts to reclaim his Wimbledon crown. Before the tournament, a replay of Murray’s win over Novak Djokovic last year will be aired on Saturday, June 21 at 11.15am (CET) on BBC Two. A review of the 2013 tournament will be broadcast
the following day at 11am. BBC Radio 5 Live will replay The Day We Won Wimbledon, a documentary about Andy Murray’s victory, narrated by John Hurt, on June 21 at midday (CET). On BBC One, When Andy Won Wimbledon will document Murray’s year since winning the Grand Slam at 11.35pm (CET) on June 23. ITV has added its channels on the Sky Go service for the first time. The mobile TV service will include several channels including ITV, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and CITV from last week. Sky customers will able to access the new channels in time for the World Cup, which kicks off this week. Luke Bradley-Jones, Sky’s Brand Director of TV Products,
said: “Sky Go is home to the widest range of channels available anywhere our customers are, and reaching the milestone of over 60 live channels is a huge achievement. “We are really excited to offer ITV channels on Sky Go as we know there can be a fight for the remote when a big summer of sport kicks off. Whether people want to catch the football - or take refuge from it - this gives our customers even more flexibility to enjoy the TV they love, on their terms.” By the end of March, Sky Go had more than 3.7 million unique users, which is up 13 per cent year-on-year.

New drug for cancer
TRIALS of a new leukaemia drug are believed to boost survival rate to 90 per cent. An Australian doctor said he thinks it could even mean the end of traditional chemotherapy treatments. Over 300 patients in the trial have been taking the drug Ibrutinib to fight a type of slow growing blood cancer called Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). The results showed a 90 per cent chance of survival, eight higher than 81 per cent who survive on chemotherapy treatment. The drug is less invasive than traditional forms of radiation therapy and is an alternative for patients whose cancer cells have built up a resistance to chemotherapy.

Less exercise for night owls PEOPLE who wake up later are less likely to take regular exercise. A new report suggests that night owls are more sedentary and struggle to keep to an exercise regime.

The report by the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago (USA) found that sleeping patterns and timing are related to activity patterns and attitude towards exercise.
The study group comprised 123 healthy adults with a self-reported sleep duration of at least 6.5 hours. Their sleeping patterns and physical activities were then monitored.
THE Spanish National Transplant Organisation has said that organ transplants have increased 4.6 per cent in the first five months of the year compared to the same period in 2013. Despite the increase, medical professionals say there are still calls for more donations of tissues and corneas, which are considered the easiest to donate and transplant.

It is called ‘GameOver Zeus.’ It comes in two parts. The malware which infects your machine and the encryption program that does the damage. How do you know if you have it? There are some ‘tell-tale’ signs that will help you spot it.

PP hits back at mayor’s sports facilities boasts FOLLOWING the comments of the mayor of Albox this week, the leader of the PP, Juan Pedro Perez Quiles, has hit back with some pointed remarks of his own. Rogelio Mena, the current mayor of Albox, commented last week regarding the sports facilities in the town, describing them as “amazing” and “magnificent”. However, Perez Quiles hit back this week, describing many of the facilities as unusable, seriously damaged, dirty, with exposed wiring, rusty metal, and without goals or baskets. He reminded people of the broken promises of the PSOE, such as the Sports Centre, paddle tennis courts, football fields and mini golf. He made particular mention of the indoor pool, which after years of delays and irregularities still remains closed, abandoned, and full of insect eggs, and in which “only the mayor bathes” (in reference to the mayor’s recent
boasts of having an indoor pool). Perez Quiles concluded by accusing the mayor of having “zero commitment” to the town and people of Albox, and suggested that “if the mayor had any political dignity, he would grab his suitcase and leave quietly.

FOOD allergies can cause dermatological discomfort for animals. It has been estimated that at least 1 per cent of all skin problems in cats and dogs are caused by dietary allergies. These can be triggered in minutes, hours or days. Sensitivity to an allergy caused by a protein can often be lifelong. Some dogs can digest the lactose in cow’s milk while the undigested lactose quickly produces an upset stomach in others. This is not a true allergy but demonstrates how sensitive to certain food pets can be. Stop the
milk and your pet’s life will look up immediately. Most dogs react in some way to incorrect feeding and, apart from allergic reactions, flatulence and inconsistent stool quality and large, smelly motions can result. If the balance of the
food is incorrect hyperactivity or, indeed, low activity can be the consequence. Protein used up for energy can produce a loss of coat and skin vitality. Many owners give far too many vitamins; a well-balanced diet should not have to be supplemented. Scratching and licking could be an indication of an allergic reaction to food, and the eating of grass, twigs and roots sometimes is an indication that the food is not being digested properly. The destruction of fibre-based material could be another sign that there is a craving for fibre to help the digestive process in some way. It’s such a dog’s life at the world’s first canine hotel A DOG owners nightmare - what to do with your four legged friend when you want to go on holiday? One Spanish resort, The Resort Canino Can Jane in the town of Roca del Valles, may have the answer - take them with you. The five-star resort, just 30 minutes outside Barcelona, has been designed with dogs in mind; it even has a specially built swimming pool for dogs of all shapes and sizes. The aqua park includes a water slide, as well as extra tough inflatables for playtimes. Federico Cano, manager of the resort said he had seen a resort that allowed dogs to swim with their owners and wanted to recreate the idea, but going one step further by building a hotel just for dogs: “I don’t see why dogs should not be allowed to enjoy a swim when the weather gets hot just like people - especially here in Spain where it gets really hot. “I designed it so that it was a little bit like a beach with a gradual slope which is exactly what dogs appreciate and I can guarantee a great

E, like many gardeners along the Costas, have still had no significant rain, just a few drops several times, and we are now in June. So unless my experience of 1989 recycles, when it rained for 10 days almost non stop, one has to prepare for a hot dry summer and take sensible steps to still achieve a beautiful and productive garden, if not already taken. Some important areas for action in new gardens are: • Improve your soils before planting anything.
• Only plant drought resistant plants. • Coach plants to develop deep root structures from day one. • Mulch, mulch and mulch. • Soften the microclimate of the garden, especially by establishing high hedges, internal hedges and trees for shade. • Establish ways of collecting storing and distributing rainwater, when it rains, productively. • Don’t attempt to plant up the entire garden. Have a network of paths and large terraces. • To ease your task of stopping plants from drying out buy and use TerraCottem soil improvement gel. Because of the need to watch the garden to ensure that plants do not suddenly suffer because the water table has gone too deep for their roots, I have not made my normal spring carp fishing trip up to the River Ebro. By the way if you do have a compost heap, give it a turn over and dampen each layer as you do so, as dry heaps will not produce good compost. Aston Martin Racing returns to Nürburgring ASTON MARTIN RACING will return to the Nürburgring later this month (June 21) to race its Bilstein-liveried V12 Vantage GT3 in the ADAC-sponsored 24-hour race. The iconic blue and yellow liveried car will compete for the overall race win in the top SP9 class for FIA homologated GT3. Continuing its tradition of intensive product testing at this unique and gruelling race, Aston Martin will also enter two raceprepared V8 Vantage N430s, one in the SP8 class and another in the SP10 class. The latter will be piloted by British journalists Chris Harris and Richard ‘Dickie’ Meaden and Nürburgring-experts Oliver Mathai (DE) and Andreas Gülden (DE). A close-to-production V12 Vantage driven by an Aston Martin Test Centre team will run in the SP8 class. The V12 Vantage GT3, driven by Aston Martin Racing works drivers Darren Turner (GB) and Stefan Mücke (DE) finished in 10th in last month’s preparatory race, a four-hour event in the popular VLN series, which featured more than 200 starters across multiple classes. “When I jumped in, the car immediately felt very good,” said Darren. “We led the 24
hour race for 10 hours last year so we know the car is competitive, and I couldn’t ask for better team-mates than Stefan and Pedro [Lamy].” Turner added: “We just need to have a trouble-free run on the day, as that is the way we are going to be able to take the fight to the big manufacturer entries.” For the 24-hour race in June five-times N24 winner Pedro Lamy (PT) will join Turner and Mücke on the 25km-long circuit amous for its undulating nature, everchanging surfaces and unforgiving corners. Aston Martin has been racing at the Nürburgring since 2006, facilitated in recent years by its permanently-staffed Test Centre adjacent to the circuit. From this base, all of the company’s road-going sports cars are developed and signed off, and a successful driving academy and customer racing programme is run by Test Centre Director Wolfgang Schuhbauer and his team. In last year’s event, Aston Martin defied the odds to qualify in second place and lead for the first 10 hours of the race before torrential rain and fog red flagged the action on-track.

New car sales are on the increase NEW car registrations in Spain were up 16.9 per cent year on year to 82,480 in May. That was the best May figure since 2010, according to manufacturer and car sales associations. During the first five months of the year sales reached 364,784 units, up from 313,588 in the same period in 2013. The continuing success of the Plan Pive, where €2,000 is given against the price of a new car when scrapping one more than 10-years-old is being credited for the turnround in the car sales market. That is set to continue with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announcing on Saturday an extension to the scheme. The increase in sales is being driven by the private owner market, which accounted for 42,140 units in May, up 27.7 per cent. Car rental businesses bought 22,537 units, up 3 per cent on the same month in 1013. Petrol engine vehicles made up 33.5 per cent of sales in May whilst diesel engine models took the lion’s share of the market at 65.1 per cent. Just 1.4 per cent of cars sold were hybrid or electric.

Colurful day out THE 19th Hole Golf Society played a Traffic Light competition at Aguilon Golf course. With perfect weather conditions the first group began the round on the first tee playing from the blue tees then the second tee playing from the yellow and the third from the awesome white tees (sort of red, yellow and blue, hence traffic lights). Paco Ocaña Grayal mastered the competition best, comfortably scoring 38 points to take first place from a very impressive Christine Dow on 36 points scoring a brilliant par on the par 5, fifth Mark Danson had a less
impressive round than usual, scoring 34 points to take third spot but also managed three nearest the pins and a two on the 17th. A really good fun day of golf rounded off with refreshments and nibbles at La Vida, Cucador. The 19th hole G/S is now arranging weekly games at various courses in the area, their home course, which they play fortnightly, is Aguilon. Lomax Cup at Cabrera bowls CABRERA Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Lomax Cup which is a knockout competition for the lady members. It was held over four days with the final being held on Wednesday, June 4, under blue skies and very hot weather. The two ladies who made it through to the final in a fiercely contested competition were Gill Young and Doreen Sands. Spectators knew they were in for a treat as both ladies are excellent bowlers showing very good form in reaching the final and the viewers were certainly not disappointed. Gill took the lead on the first end and then Doreen took the lead and kept it until the 16th end where the score was all square at 13-13. The lead swapped constantly and the final

Cortijo Grande
THERE were two competitions at Cortijo Grande last week and good scores were required to win in both divisions. On Wednesday there were 38 points for Bob Winter to win the first division, Greg Ward (36) was second. Second division winner with 34 was Sylvia Bradfield and second was Tony Stubbs (30). Sunday saw another lovely day to play golf, with scores to match. First division winner with 35 on a countback was John Geaves from Phil Dunne.
