Businesses closed in noise crackdown A POPULAR nightclub is one of half-a-dozen establishments closed down in Nerja for being too noisy. The town council has fined Jimmy’s disco €12,500 for exceeding the permitted noise levels. It will not be able to open again until it has sorted out its sound insulation. Businesses in Tutti-Frutti Square, as it is known locally, have come under fire from the council for noise violations as it does not want a repeat of the ‘Ipanema’ case in VelezMalaga in which the council had to pay residents €5 million in compensation for not having acted sooner on noise infringements. A judge ruled that the council should have acted sooner to address complaints about noise, and ordered it to pay the compensation. Half-a-dozen venues, located in or around the

square, have had to close temporarily in order to correct their installations and reduce the amount of noise which, inevitably, leaks out from the premises. Jimmy’s, Nerja’s most popular night-spot, on Calle Antonio Millan, has been closed since April 26 when the council detected that the noise levels, as measured by local experts, were above the maximum

allowed by the 6/2012 law. As a result, the council ordered them to close immediately, opened a file on them and fined the owners. According to Manuel Martinez, spokesperson for the establishment, the problems arose when they changed the air conditioning installations, also at the behest of the council, and discovered that they were 11 decibels

over the limit. They have been told that they cannot open again until all the installations pass the council’s

inspections. Martinez commented that this could not have come at a worse time as the tourist season is approaching and they will be unable to take advantage of the extra summer trade. He went on to say: “Nerja is a tourist town and in summer the population triples. Jimmy’s has been here for more than 30 years, offering entertainment to residents and tourists alike.” Nerja’s Councillor for Commerce Nieves Atencia confirmed that the club would have to remain closed until the premises came up to legal standards.

Letters 21 ALMUÑECAR AQUARIUM: Reopening in late June.

Underwater world ALMUÑECAR Aquarium is scheduled to reopen in late June. The town council has spent close to €400,000 in an ambitious building restoration project aimed at bringing the aquarium back to its former glory. It closed its doors more than 18 months ago when the company in charge of its care suddenly abandoned it. Council officials discovered that the aquarium facilities were basically in ruins and decided to breathe new life into what they called an important tourist attraction. The restoration project included a new

air conditioning system, a water removal system and the renovation of the aquarium floor. The air conditioning system alone cost more than €150,000. Luis Aragon, Environment city councillor of Almuñecar, estimates that the aquarium will open its doors in late June, offering tourists the opportunity to marvel at the wonders of the ocean. Aragon is proud of the work carried out by the local government. “Now we fully comply with sanitary and animal welfare requirements. This is a place where families can come and have a good time,” he said.

Remembering the victims ELEVEN victims of the Holocaust were commemorated in the Zujaira district, Granada. Zujaira Council unveiled a monolith memorial built to commemorate 11 residents of the area who died in Mauthausen concentration camp. The ceremony is part of a tradition started more than three decades ago aimed at keeping alive the memory of victims of the Holocaust.

The ceremony was organised by the council and local government officials were present. “We have a moral obligation to commemorate our neighbours. We must not forget they were victims of intransigence and hatred,” said the Zujaria Mayor. Many Spaniards fled the country during the Spanish Civil War and took refuge in neighbouring countries. When World War II broke

out, many of them were captured by the Nazis and later deported to concentration camps. Enrique Medina, mayor of Pinos Puente said the monolith memorial was a small contribution made by the local community so that Nazi crimes are not forgotten. It is estimated more than 6 million people perished in concentration camps during the war.

The entry fee is €30 for the unemployed and €35 for hotel industry professionals. TABERNAS BADLANDS: ‘Heavy drought’ area. IN 1994, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated June 17 as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Desertification affects more than 110 countries, among them Spain and in particular Almeria where the Tabernas Desert, Europe’s only desert, is located. This day is set aside to make the general public aware of the problem and the necessity for international co-operation to fight the spread of desertification. Gastronomic delight TWO Axarquian entrepreneurs are hoping to turn a profit by collecting snail caviar. Their scheme was highlighted at the 15th Gastronomic Festival which not only allowed its visitors to taste some of the most delicious dishes the region has to offer, but also to be witnesses to the creative business initiative of the two entrepreneurs. They presented an ambitious business project called ‘Snail River,’ in which they have already invested €6,000. Their aim? To breed and possibly export large numbers of the helix aspersia, otherwise known as the common garden snail. However, this is not the snail commonly used in the Riogordo gastronomy, since its inhabitants usually prefer the ‘cabrillas,’ as they call them, a different variety of the same species. Snails are sold on the market for prices ranging between €4 or

Spanish wine just for US market AN Axarquian vineyard is targeting America with an exclusive wine. Sedella Vinos SL, a winery founded in 2006 by the wine expert Lauren Rosillo, is planning to produce a wine exclusively destined for the American market. The new product is set to be made from grapes grown and harvested in new vineyards and aged for only a year in cement amphorae. It will be marketed under the name ‘Laderas de Sedella’ and it will be full of respect for traditional winemaking, combining white and red grapes fermented with the stems and the skins and no temperature control whatsoever. “We are talking about an ecological wine, with no treatment in the field and no treatment in the wine cellar, so it could be said that its production harkens back even more to age-old techniques,” said Rosillo. He plans to produce around 1,000 bottles, which will be sold throughout the American market. Each bottle will cost around $20 (€14.77). “We will first market the vintage wine from 2012,”

LADERAS DE SEDELLA: Destined for the American market. said Rosillo, who recently introduced the new 2012 Sedella in the UK. Production of Sedella Vinos barely reaches 3,000 bottles a year and most of them are exported to London. Nonetheless, Rosillo has already subscribed to an agreement to export the 2012 Sedella to countries including Austria and Switzerland. Sedella is a red wine made with Romé and Garnacha grapes grown and harvested from 100-year-old vines and aged for anywhere from between 16 and 20 months in new barrels made of French oak.

Motril denounces domestic violence DOZENS of people in Motril gathered at the city council to observe a minute’s silence in remembrance of the late Araceli Morales, 60. She died in the intensive care unit of the Traumatology Hospital of Granada in the early hours of June 6, roughly two weeks after being attacked by her husband with a hammer. Luisa Garcia Chamorro, Mayor of Motril, presided over an extraordinary plenary session of city council officials, convened after the tragic passing of Araceli Morales. It passed a unanimous institutional motion demanding increased assistance for the victims of domestic violence, the speeding-up of divorce proceedings, stricter sentences for perpetrators of spousal abuse as well as awareness

campaigns with the purpose of eradicating sexist violence. The session included the participation of representatives of the provincial council, the Andalucia Board and Central Government. Once again, the mayor of Motril expressed her deep sense of grief and sadness, brought about by such a tragic loss, while calling upon all members of society and law enforcement officials to join in the fight against the social

scourge of domestic violence. “You have to face the consequences for what you do. We demand stricter sentences, because human lives are priceless,” she said. Furthermore, she advocated “an all-encompassing social pact to deliver a fatal blow to domestic violence.” Araceli Morales is the sixth woman who has fallen victim to domestic violence in Andalucia, and the 27th in Spain so far this year.

Brutal attack on Velez family A MOTHER was brutally battered and tortured in front of her three young children by masked and armed assailants. Law enforcement officers are currently looking into the savage assault suffered by the family from Velez-Malaga. On June 3 at 10.30pm, two blackclad men wearing ski masks and armed with guns broke into a small cottage located in Almayate, where the mother was alone with three of her children, all under 12 years of age. The assailants battered the mother, threw her to the floor, tortured her with electric shocks, pointed a gun at her head and demanded to know where the safe was. The children started to cry and begged the men not to do anything to hurt their mother. The attackers then tied them all up, gagged them with adhesive tape and locked the children up in a room, so they wouldn’t bother them any more.

Almost an hour later, the husband, 38, came home with his six-year-old son. The assailants, who were waiting for him on the porch armed with their guns, a kitchen knife and a large piece of wood, ambushed him and started to hit him over the head. Despite the beating he took, the husband was able to defend himself and scared the attackers away. Meanwhile, the mother had managed to free herself, lock the door and call the police. After alerting the emergency services, the woman drove her badly injured husband and panic-stricken children to the hospital. The husband suffered multiple fractures to his face and is currently being kept under observation in hospital and undergoing medical tests to determine the full extent of his injuries. The Velez-Malaga police are investigating the attack and are not ruling out any motive behind the brutal attack.

A scapegoat? T

HE driver is to blame for the Santiago de Compostela train crash that left 79 people dead. So says the official report into the tragedy nearly a year on. It is hard to argue with that conclusion when one hears that the train was going at around 190kph when the speed limit was just 80kph. Revelations that the driver was distracted by a phone call from the guard at the crucial moment cannot exonerate him - the driver’s first responsibility is to the safety of his passengers. But pointing the finger of blame at the train’s driver, Francisco José Garzón Amo, who has been charged with 79 counts of homicide by professional recklessness, is not enough. Why, in a state of the art train on a modern railway system, was such an excessive speed permitted?

In this day of computerised driving aids, the technology exists to automatically prevent such accidents. Indeed much of Spain’s vaunted high-speed rail network has just such systems in place. But for some reason - the suspicion being to save money - the stretch of line which included this bend, acknowledged before the incident as highly dangerous, did not have them fitted. Such mechanisms were fitted soon after the accident in three places approaching the scene to make sure a similar accident could not happen again. As so often the sound of a stable door being slammed shut too late. The driver should not be left to face the music alone. Those responsible for not ensuring the safety of the passengers, and that means not just local managers, but also people at boardroom level, should also be forced to face their responsibilities in court.

Motril drugs bust NATIONAL POLICE have arrested three men and a woman for drug trafficking in Motril. The police also carried out three house searches and seized an undisclosed amount of cocaine and ecstasy, a luxury car and more than €9,000 in cash. The police investigation started when officers discovered that someone was distributing cocaine in Motril and that this individual was part of a larger drug trafficking organisation. Some of its members were in charge of driving every week between Motril and Granada, where the supplier lived, to buy the cocaine. Following a threemonth enquiry, National Police positively identified all the members of the organisation.

Tainted money to swell GDP THE proceeds of drugs money and vice are to be included in Spain’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecasts. The national statistics institute INE will begin taking these into account next October when it will also be using ESA-2010, Europe’s new accounting system, and a new population census, it revealed. So far INE has not given details of the economic impact of these hidden but important sectors on national statistics. The UK recently estimated that drugs and prostitution contributed £10 billion (€12.28 billion) to the country’s economy. The UK government has

also announced its intention of adding these proceeds to its GDP estimate after the summer, as will Italy. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Estonia and Slovenia already do so. All other EU member states’ statistics bodies will substitute the ESA-95 method currently used for estimates with the ESA2010 system in the autumn. Nevertheless, the decision to include what the EU’s statistics agency Eurostat described as the “informal economy” in their GDPs was contemplated in the previous method. “Nor is this adaptation solely European, it is also global,” a Eurostat spokesman said.

May’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment figure of 24,604 was the greatest reduction since 1998, accumulating its 10th fall in as many months. A further 198,320 people were registered as Social Security contributors, a statistic that is generally regarded as the true gauge of job-creation.

Tax give and take from the Hacienda SPAIN’S tax-collecting agency AEAT will not pursue outstanding debts of less than €3. These sums are usually the balance owing on IRPF income tax returns and the cost of recovering them is greater than the cash eventually received, AEAT announced. Taxpayers with amounts like these still outstanding will not be pursued any further on strictly economic grounds, said a notice in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). This cannot be interpreted as a softening on the part of Hacienda, as the tax inspectors’ union IHE recently called for fiscal fraud to be declared a prison offence. They suggested raising the threshold for tax fraud beyond which it becomes a crime, from the current €120,000 to €600,000. In return penalties would become more severe.

Industrial output 4year-high

INDUSTRIAL output in Spain was up 4.3 per cent year on year in April - the biggest growth in four years. That means that Spain has now posted six months in a row of rising industrial output according to the National Statistics Institute’s seasonally adjusted figures. It is a boost to the country which only emerged from five years of on/off recession in the middle of 2013. Since then there has been a small but sustained growth in GDP with manufacturing leading the way. One of the most important industries for exports is the car industries with manufacturers like Nissan, Volkswagen and Seat all increasing production in recent months.

Great care at the hands of health service I FEEL that I must put into words my praise for the San Pedro de Alcantara health centre. After I fell very badly onto my face, my husband took me to ‘Urgencias.’ In less than two minutes I was seen by a medic who cleaned and bandaged me, then gave me medication and a tetanus injection. I was seen by a doctor who gave me a thorough physical examination to make sure there was nothing broken or that I had sustained concussion. All in all, a fast and comforting experience that ended up with written instructions (in English) as to what I should and should not do. Out of tune WE had the misfortune of trying to attend a couple of events during the Tuna Festival and Contest in Mojacar. We went to see the musicians and singers perform at 9pm at the Parque Comercial as publicised in the local papers, on the Mojacar Town Hall website, posters and electronic screen in the Parque Comercial. We invited others who had never seen the Tunas and arrived early to get good seats. No Tunas showed up. Later we went with friends, again as announced in all the media, to see the parade of all the Tuna groups which starts in the village and normally ends near the roundabout by the Multi Purpose Building. No Tunas ever showed up. Although I have always loved watching the Tunas, I will never go to these events again. For me, this is a sad ending to what was a wonderful event. M Taylor (by email)

many people have about immigration, can anyone believe UKIP could make any appreciable difference to the number of people entering Britain? relax or sleep in the afternoon. At the weekend they even play in the morning as they do not have to go to school. This is extremely annoying to me and other neighbours, who are mostly elderly. I usually work early shifts and must get up at 4 or 5am and need to sleep in the afternoon when I come home. False alarms FOR once, I find myself agreeing a lot with Leapy Lee! Especially when he points out that UKIP have no policies apart from their views on Europe and they will in any case be unable to carry them out. I also agree that our mainstream parties should have taken UKIP more seriously but it is true that because Leapy and others constantly warned that UKIP were winning, a lot of people voted for them just because of that. I WAS greatly dismayed when I read the ‘advertising feature’ concerning an Alfaz councillor. I personally know the lady and worked with her when we both taught in the same school. You could not meet a kinder, more honest, hardworking person. She was greatly loved and highly respected by pupils, parents and colleagues alike. As a councillor, she is also just as highly respected. The incident mentioned occurred nine years ago, before this lady entered politics! She had no part in what happened but because it concerned a member of her family, she has bravely suffered the consequences. It seems obvious that the people who paid for this ‘advertising feature’ deliberately waited to use this information in a smear campaign in the week before the European elections. Being a weekly paper they also made sure that there was no time for redress. This latest incident is so blatant, it borders on an intelligence-insulting exercise which is almost frightening in its pure arrogance. In exchange for one American serviceman, a man whose service record is appearing more and more dubious, and who could in fact turn out to be an actual deserter, he hands over FIVE of the Taliban’s top military leaders! When publicly challenged over the decision, in an endeavour to appear a zealous patriotic president (which of course should be

unquestionable) he weakly waffles in his defence that, ‘whatever it takes, we will bring every one of our troops home’. I’d like to have been a mosquito on the wall during those ‘negotiations’. One for one, perhaps. Even two for one would have been just about acceptable. But five!? No, sorry, Mr President, I think we should all be extremely worried about your motives and deeply suspicious of your actual position in these unsettling times. Well, I don’t often use the blurb for personal subjects, but I have just returned from a weekend in Holland. (I know, I know!) where I did a quick Tele and sang at the birthday party of an old and dear friend of mine. How wonderful it was to just wallow in the world of millionaires, however briefly. The grounds and magnificent rooms of a country mansion, and three bands. A half dozen top performers,

HOSE of you who peruse this blurb on a regular basis will know I have very little time for Barack Obama. I think the man is weak, indecisive and elected for all the wrong reasons. I also maintain his actions regarding the problems of radical Islam are often questionable, to say the least. In fact, I consider some of his rhetoric and decisions in that direction often give rise to suspicions as to where his true loyalties actually lie. The speech some time ago, for example, wherein he declared that Muslims had always had a close and productive association with the USA. Later, of course, this was revealed as a ludicrous statement, with not one predominant example being discovered anywhere in American history. Without a shot being fired (metaphorically at least), before the war was anywhere near being won and under the guise

E, like many gardeners along the Costas, have still had no significant rain, just a few drops several times, and we are now in June. So unless my experience of 1989 recycles, when it rained for 10 days almost non stop, one has to prepare for a hot dry summer and take sensible steps to still achieve a beautiful and productive garden, if not already taken. Some important areas for action in new gardens are as follows. • Improve your soils before planting anything. • Only plant drought resistant plants. • Coach plants to develop deep root structures from day one. • Mulch, mulch and mulch.

PRODUCTIVE: Achieve a beautiful garden for the summer.

Drought may continue for some • Soften the microclimate of the garden, especially by establishing high hedges, internal hedges and trees for shade. • Establish ways of collecting storing and distributing rain water, when it rains, productively. • Don’t attempt to

plant up the entire garden. Have a network of paths and large terraces. • To ease your task of stopping plants from drying out buy and use TerraCottem soil improvement gel. You can find out all you need to know about this helpful product,

some areas I have spent many hours in recent weeks correcting, updating and extending my leaflet ‘Making waterless gardens a practical reality worldwide’ to create a 90 page practical book entitled ‘How to save water in your garden - A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean style gardening’. This is now available from Amazon Books and gradually over the months will become available from other internet bookshops. The book discusses, amongst other issues, why one needs to take saving water seriously, 300 actions that can be taken and provides a list of 250 plants that are, or can be persuaded to become drought resistant. Because of the need to watch the garden to ensure that plants do not suddenly suffer because the water table has gone too deep for their roots, I have not made my normal spring carp fishing trip up to

the River Ebro. But that is not the only reason. They have had a lot of rain inland in the north and the river is, like last year, often over the banks. However, my regular fishing partner has caught a few 50lb carp. But maybe my young turkey will break last year’s 40lb personal record and make 50lbs. Already it is weaned off chick food to grains and green garden and kitchen waste. By the way if you do have a compost heap, give it a turn over and dampen each layer as you do so, as dry heaps will not produce good compost. Architecture for a better life THE international jury of the Ninth Architecture and Urbanism Biennial (BIAU) has awarded prizes to Venezuelan architect Fruto Vivas, 30 architectural projects, three publications, two research projects and a video from the Videourbana competition. It is seen as an acknowledgment of architecture which aims at improving the quality of life of all citizens. The awards celebrate the work put into research, teaching and creation in Latin America, Spain and Portugal. The jury met in Madrid and made the selection from among 182 already

ARCHITECTURAL AIM: To improve the quality of life of all citizens. pre-selected proposals, out of the 1,000 that had originally been submitted. The jury emphasised “the high level of quality of the works” and highlighted “the

enormous creative vigour of Latin American architecture”. The 30 architectural projects included schools, social housing, a hospital,

an auditorium and a building restoration project, from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia, among others. In the publications

category, the jury selected the book Talca (Chile), the magazine Plot (Argentina) and the mobile phone application Scalae (Spain). In the research projects category, the jury awarded prizes to Prisma (Mexico) and “Aproximación desde la Arquitectura” (Ecuador). The Videourbana jury, an urban video competition, decided to award the prize to the Chilean Video ‘El ultimo arenero.’ Furthermore, the Biennial jury unanimously agreed to give the Latin American award to Fruto Vivas (Venezuela, 1928) for his

laudable 60-year career path in architecture, both as a creator and a teacher. Francisco Burgos and Gines Garrido, coordinators of the BIAU said: “Latin America covers a huge and extraordinarily diverse territory, home to 600 million people. If the architecture and the cities provide us with an eloquent portrait of the cultural richness, weaknesses and energies of these societies, then the works selected by the jury help us understand the current state of Latin American societies.”

Aston Martin returns to Nürburgring ASTON MARTIN RACING will return to the Nürburgring later this month (June 21) to race its Bilstein-liveried V12 Vantage GT3 in the ADAC-sponsored 24-hour race. The iconic blue and yellow liveried car will compete for the overall race win in the top SP9 class for FIA homologated GT3. Continuing its tradition of intensive product testing at this unique and gruelling race, Aston Martin will also enter two raceprepared V8 Vantage N430s, one in the SP8 class and another in the SP10 class. The latter will be piloted by British journalists Chris Harris and Richard ‘Dickie’

Meaden and Nürburgring-experts Oliver Mathai (DE) and Andreas Gülden (DE). A close-to-production V12 Vantage driven by an Aston Martin Test Centre team will run in the SP8 class. The V12 Vantage GT3, driven by Aston Martin Racing works drivers Darren Turner (GB) and Stefan Mücke (DE) finished 10th in last month’s preparatory race, a fourhour event in the popular VLN series, which featured more than 200 starters across multiple classes. Aston Martin has been racing at the Nürburgring since 2006.

New car sales are on the increase

NEW car registrations in Spain were up 16.9 per cent year on year to 82,480 in May. That was the best May figure since 2010, according to manufacturer and car sales associations. During the first five months of the year sales reached 364,784 units, up from 313,588 in the same period in 2013. The continuing success of the Plan Pive, where €2,000 is given against the price of a new car when scrapping one more than 10-yearsold is being credited for the turnround in the car sales market. Petrol engine vehicles made up 33.5 per cent of sales in May whilst diesel engine models took the lion’s share of the market at 65.1 per cent. Just 1.4 per cent of cars sold were hybrid or electric.
