Reprieve for Gandia’s threatened coastline

GANDIA’s L’Auir beach, one of the area’s remaining untouched stretches of coast, could stay that way. The town hall has decided to delay announcing the winner of a competition to come up with suggestions for developing the 2.8 kilometres of virgin beach. Prize money of €54,000 was to be shared amongst the most-voted-for plans which were supposed to include ‘two or three’ hotel complexes, as well as single-family homes, restaurants and leisure centres. The town hall will first wait to learn how

the townspeople feel about the 13 projects now on display and for which they have been invited to vote. The project’s future also depends on obtaining sufficient backing from private investors, the town hall admitted. This particular Black Pearl is the yacht which sailed round the world to publicise the first Pirates of the Caribbean film which was released in 2005-2006. The hull of the 21.5-metre boat with its 31.5metre mast is decorated with a giant black squid on a red background. “We wanted to keep the original Disney design because the spirit of adventure and action remain in the hearts of all the yachtsmen who sailed

round the world in 2005,” said Knut Frostad, Director General of the Volvo Ocean Race. The boat can be viewed in front of the Volvo Ocean Race museum in Alicante harbour, which has now received more than 20,000 visitors, the majority of them from outside Spain. “The boat’s impressive and fantastic image is really popular with Alicantinos as well as the tourists who visit the museum,” Frostad remarked. “It’s another attraction for the port’s Volvo Zone,” he added.

According to the Centre for Sociologic Research, when the mother is unable to care for her children, the next most popular solution is for the grandmother to do so, in 7.5 per cent of cases, followed by the father (4.8 per cent) and 3.1 per cent of children attended a kindergarten. However, according to a different survey, carried out by the Ministry of Health and Social Policies, more than 50 per cent of Spanish grandparents currently look after their grandchildren every day, and one in four does so for more than eight hours per day. While 61.3 per cent of people who took part in the survey claim to be totally happy with their families,

Grandparents nowadays are more active than ever, and if they do not have a balanced diet and some time to themselves, especially to get some rest, their good intentions in helping to look after their grandchildren could eventually prevent them from doing so altogether.

Appeals and protests Cultural use for over co-payments an old school MORE than 3,300 people are appealing against co-payment charges introduced by the regional government. They must now pay for

part of the care or treatment they or their families receive at day centres, residences and other centres for the disabled. Approximately 8,000 people have now been notified by the regional government’s Social Welfare Department, about the contributions they will now be required to make to help finance use of services provided by the regional government.

So far, 3,335 people have protested against the co-payment and their appeals are now being examined “one by one” by the Social Welfare Department, regional government sources revealed. The disabled and their families have also presented thousands of signatures to the regional ombudsman, calling for the new regulations to be revised.

Rallying round Benissa with pics BENISSA holds its annual Photography Rally on May 10 and 11. The competition, now in its 16th edition, is organised by the town hall and for the first time three photos will be chosen, announced Councillor for Youth, Jorge Ivars. The rally starts at 4pm on Saturday May 10 in Plaza Rey Jaime I in the centre of Benissa. Each competitor will receive an envelope indicating the route they should take, the time allotted and the places they must photograph with a digital camera. By 9pm participants should have arrived at the overnight stop, where they will also take nocturnal photos. The rally ends at 4pm the next day, when participants hand over their memory card with the required 14 photos. The rally is open for over 16s although minors may participate if accompanied by an adult. The €10 entry fee remains unchanged and participants should register before May 6, at Benissa’s Casa Jove between 9am and 1pm, Monday to Thursday.

No oil for these troubled waters THERE are thought to be five oil wells below the Gulf of Valencia. They should yield an estimated 70 million barrels of oil, believes Aciep, Spain’s association of oil and gas exploration companies. Prospecting is due to commence at the end of this summer in the area between

the Valencian Community coast and Ibiza. There is unanimous opposition to the project within the Valencian Community, with protests from town halls, the tourist industry, fishing guilds and environmentalist groups. The Aciep report also announced that initial studies suggest that although there is

gas in front of the Ebra Delta and the Leon Gulf between Spain and France, none is present off the Valencia Community. Explorations off the Gulf of Valencia are still in an early phase. At this stage Cairn Energy, the company behind the project, is limiting it to explorations and a seismic survey. Similar to the use of ultrasound in

medicine, this bounces sound waves off the ocean floor, allowing geologists to map the strata below the sea bed. The noise this produces will gravely affect fish and all types of marine life, environmentalists claim. This phase will last several years and it will be around 20 years before production starts, Aciep revealed.

Thumbs down for June exam re-sits PUPILS failing subjects during the school year have always retaken exams in September. The regional government’s decision to bring forward re-sits to June in state and state-aided schools has met with disapproval from parents. This does not benefit the pupils, claimed parents’ association Concapa. Instead it is a measure introduced to solve problems related to bureaucracy and the way that schools are run, Concapa declared. It is irrational to expect that what a pupil has failed to absorb over the nine months of the school year can be learnt in a few days, the association said. Failing to obtain a minimum pass-mark can be caused by many things. These include learning ability, ill-health or a family’s relocation.

Bringing forward the date will deprive pupils of the ‘educational opportunity’ and learning the consequences of ‘certain behaviour or attitudes’.

Falsely accused then cleared of drugs charges A BENIDORM pub owner and an employee have been acquitted of drugs charges by an Alicante court. They were arrested in September 2010 after a woman asked the disc jockey at the Tropical House pub if she could leave her bag while she went to the Ladies. Minutes later police entered the pub after receiving a tip-off and searched the premises, immediately finding the bag. It contained a substance that later turned out to be innocuous but the woman was never located. Owner Ricardo Villaroel and the disc jockey were both cleared but police are still investigating who was responsible for the spurious tip-off.

It’s not rocket science in Salinas PAYLOAD AEROSPACE will not install a testing site at Laguna de Salinas. The company is instead looking for somewhere to test the equipment that is used to launch satellites into space. From the outset the proposal was met with suspicion by many inhabitants of the small town in the interior of Alicante Province. Local Opposition parties and environmentalists were equally unenthusiastic. They did not want to add fuel to a political war with groups “that want to make ill-informed political capital” out of the situation, said the two young owners of Payload Aerospace, Raul Torres and Raul Verdu. The project would not have given rise to health hazards either to people, the environment, wildlife or property near the planned installations, they added. The company had intended to invest €1 million in the project which has the backing of Miguel Hernandez University, the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, the Caixa bank, the Valencian Institute of Finance as well as private investors.

Success for ‘getting to know you’ therapy for dog bite girl ALICIA MARTINEZ from Muchamiel was badly mauled by a Rottweiler last year. The 18-year-old has now been presented with a Rottweiler puppy by a breeder from the Basque Region who learnt that she had been receiving counter-conditioning therapy. Alicia was so terrified

after the attack that she was afraid to leave the house in case she came face to face with a dog. Eventually, she decided to attend a two-month course of therapy sessions at the kennels of the Canine Unit attached to the Local Police in Alicante City. Alicia’s fear evaporated as she befriended an 18-

month-old Rottweiler named Koldo, and she was present last month when he and a second dog were formally presented to the unit. Now she has her own Rottweiler, a puppy of four months, who was handed over by Juan Seva, Councillor for Public Safety at Alicante City Hall.

No truce in ongoing airport taxi wars OUT-OF-TOWN cabbies will be allowed only six daily airport runs to Alicante-Elche Airport. The new regulation, announced by Elche Mayor Mercedes Alonso is due to come into effect on May 1. Only Elche’s 82 taxidrivers may ply for hire at the airport and they have always complained about the intrusion of other drivers on their patch. Around 40 now

arrive each day from all over the Costa Blanca, they maintain. In some cases they make six journeys a day while they carry out only three or four, with many having to stand idle, the Elche drivers complain. The six-journey limit emerged from talks with representatives from the regional and local government and the president of Elche’s taxidrivers’ association. A

number-plate reader will also be installed by airports’ operator Aena. Murcia’s Chamber of Commerce and the Fedetaxi association immediately slated Elche’s proposal to bar out-of-town cabbies from the airport. The six-journey limit was not based on existing regulations, they said, and restricted free trade. Legal action would be taken, they warned.

An uncertain future for Aitana base THE Defence Ministry has no plans for the abandoned Air Force base in the Aitana mountains. It closed seven years ago and neither the regional nor provincial government was tempted by the central government’s offer to accept the base in exchange for the high cost of repairing and maintaining it. The Defence Ministry admitted in reply to questions in the Madrid parliament that once all valuable and sensitive material had been removed, nothing had been spent on upkeep. “The nearest military unit and the Guardia Civil carry out necessary checks,” said the ministry, adding that ceding the base without payment was not an option. “It is clear that the ministry does not know what it intends to do with the installation,” complained MP Patricia Blanquer. “Furthermore it is not fulfilling its obligation to maintain an asset that belongs to us all.”

One of the driest years on record DROUGHT in Alicante Province is an increasingly real threat. The Valencian Community and Alicante Province in particular are experiencing one of the driest hydrological years on record. The first six months of the hydrological or water year, which

begins on October 1 and ends on September 30, were extremely dry and warm, said Aemet, Spain’s Met Office. Less than 100 litres of rain per square metre were registered in half the region of Valencia, while the situation in Alicante is

reportedly even worse. The Medio Vinalopo and some parts of l’Alacanti received less than 50 litres per square metre in six-and-a-half months. This figure is all the more ominous because it covers the usually rainy winter and spring.

The situation is little better in the rest of the province, Aemet said, with the exception of the Marina Alta and parts of l’Alcoia where rainfall exceeded 250 litres per square metre. Elsewhere it varied between 50 and 100 litres per square metre.

Lack of rain was aggravated by Alicante Province’s consistently high temperatures throughout the autumn and winter. The first fortnight of April was the second warmest since 1951, with average temperatures 3.7 degrees higher than normal.

Sand artists prepare for the high season CALPE Town Hall has now announced the winners of its Sand Sculpture competition. The winners were Marek Artim, Stefan Anghel, Ales Paulicek, Marius Nita and Mihai Cioroui. Their prize consists of being able to choose the pitch where they can produce sand sculptures throughout the summer season. They were required to create a sandcastle, figure or sculpture from sand using only their hands and assisted only by the typical beach accessories like buckets, spades and rakes. This is the competition’s third

Cup Final trashes Mestalla APPROXIMATELY 1,200 seats were smashed up during the Barcelona-Real Madrid cup final in Valencia. The match was played at Mestalla, the home ground of Valencia FC, and most of the destruction occurred in the two sections where Barcelona and Madrid supporters were located. Although damage was expected, the vandalism was worse than during the 2009 and 2011 cup ties played there, said Javier Sanchez, who is the Mestalla maintenance manager. The cost of replacing the tiers of seating will not affect the Valencia club, Sanchez said, but will be met by the Royal Spanish Football Association.

1,000 marihuana plants discovered THE GUARDIA CIVIL has found more than 1,000 marihuana plants in just two raids on villages in Alicante. Six people were detained, five men and a woman, in the raids on Benitachell and Jijona and all of the detained were between 25 and 55 and were from various European countries. The two raids were coordinated but independent of each other and produced 1,060 marihuana plants at various stages of maturity. In Jijona 455 plants were found, where the head grower was arrested on the spot, as well as three others found later in

250 grieve for local family AROUND 250 people congregated in front of the town hall in Benitachell, Alicante, to remember a 23 month-old baby who died after being run over by a car. Local residents wanted to show their support for the family of the baby whose mother and cousins were also seriously hurt in the accident. The mayor of Benitachell, Josep Femenia, commented that the whole town was grieving for the loss of one of its youngest residents. He went on to point out that there would be an official day of mourning, during which the flag over the town hall would be at half mast. The accident shocked the small village last Thursday when a car, which was backing out of the health centre, failed to see the mother who was walking next to the three minors. The strength of the impact killed the baby immediately and emergency services were not able to do anything to save her life.

At the Benitachell bust the police also found 3,100 grammes of dried marihuana ready for sale. As well as the drugs the police have also confiscated ventilators, lamps, driers, cabling and other grower’s paraphernalia. All of the arrested stand accused of crimes against public health and defrauding the electrical companies.

Four accused of medicine fraud TWO PEOPLE have been detained and another two, one a minor, charged in Alicante for falsifying medicines and selling them on the internet. The group was making fake anabolic steroids and growth hormones, both of which require a medical prescription, and then selling them to unsuspecting victims on the internet. The Guardia Civil have arrested two Polish citizens, 41 and 42, and a Spanish national, 20, and confiscated 1,700 boxes of the fake medicines.

The operation began last March when the Guardia Civil were alerted to the existence of more than 2,000 empty boxes, with medical inscriptions on their sides, which had been sent to an address in Teulada. Investigations revealed that the company receiving these boxes was located in a luxury villa in Benitachell where a Polish family lived. The family were buying the chemical ingredients in China and making the medicines at their home in an illegal laboratory.

Spanish town wants a new name A SPANISH town is aiming to change its anti-Semitic name, with locals admitting it is not fit for the modern age. Residents in Castrillo Matajudios (which translates as ‘Castrillo, Kill Jews’) will be given the opportunity to vote on the name change on May 25. The small town is home to some 56 residents, and lies near the northern city of Burgos. The town’s mayor, Lorenzo Rodriguez, has promised that everyone will have the chance to vote and hopefully a new named can be found – something that celebrates the location’s Jewish heritage. If residents agree to the change, they will be able to choose between the less offensive Mota Judios and Mota de Judios, both meaning ‘Mound of the Jews’. Rodriguez told a French news agency: “Those of us who have lived all our lives in Castrillo Matajudios don’t give it a second thought. But the moment you go elsewhere it sounds bad. “Nowadays when people hear Castrillo Matajudios they go, ‘What a village. They kill Jews there. You have killed Jews,” he said. “There are some villagers, business people who travel to Israel, and they try not to show their identity card. It is a name that we know today is not very correct.”

Spain leads in organ donors DESPITE a series of cutbacks to the health service as a result of the economic crisis, Spain is still leading the way in terms of organ donations and transplants. Since its inception 25 years

ago in 1989, the Spanish National Transplant Organisation (ONT) has overseen more than 90,500 organ transplant operations. ONT has managed some 57,000 kidney transplants,

21,576 liver transplants, 7,024 heart transplants, 3,200 lung transplants and over 1,500 pancreas transplant operations. These impressive figures have been helped by the fact that Spain has the highest rate of

organ donors in the world. Last year, around 1,655 people in Spain donated their organs, with an average of 35.1 donors per million people, well above the European Union average of 19.2 per million.

Skin cancer rate rises fivefold EXPERTS have linked the rise of package holidays to hot countries like Spain, along with sun-bed use, to a fivefold increase in rates of the deadliest form of skin cancer since the 1970s. Cancer experts say that the quest for a ‘healthy’ tan has contributed dramatically to an increase in cases of malignant melanoma. More than 13,000 people are now developing the disease every year compared to about 1,800 in 1975, according to Cancer Research UK. This means that the incidence rate has shot up from just over three per 100,000 of the population 40 years ago to around 17 per 100,000 today. Malignant melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with more than 2,000 people dying from the disease each year. Sunburn is a known factor that increases the risk of skin cancer, especially for those with pale skin or a large number of moles or freckles.

Head of Statistics at Cancer Research UK, Nick Ormiston-Smith, stated: “Since the mid-1970s, malignant melanoma incidence rates in the UK have increased more rapidly than any of today’s 10 most common cancers. “Holidays in hot climates have become more affordable and sunbeds are more widely available since the 1970s. “But we know over-exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun or sun-beds is the main cause of skin cancer.” Ormiston-Smith added: “This means, in many cases, the disease can be prevented, and is why it’s essential to get into good sun safety habits, whether at home or abroad. “The good news for those that are diagnosed, is that the survival rate for the disease is amongst the highest for any cancer. More than eight in 10 people will now survive it,” he concluded.

Spain’s Robin Hood takes a stand against capitalism A SPANISH man is being hailed as the country’s very own Robin Hood after he took out dozens of loans worth almost half a million euros – with no intention of ever paying them back. Instead, Enric Duran donated the money to projects that created and promoted alternatives to capitalism.

He gave the money to social activists, funding anti-capitalist speaking tours and TV cameras for a media network. Between 2006 and 2008, Duran took out 68 commercial and personal loans from 39 banks in Spain. Duran, who has been in hiding for 14 months, is unapologetic for his actions

even though they could land him in prison. After charges were brought against him by six of the banks involved, Duran was arrested in Spain in 2009. After two months in prison he was bailed for €50,000 and in February 2013, facing up to eight years in prison, Duran

made the decision to go into hiding rather than stand trial. Luis Barcenas, who has been in prison since June 2013, is currently being investigated for multimillion tax fraud. He is currently under investigation for allegedly receiving sizeable illegal

payments in the country’s Gürtel case and has seen his reported €48 million in Swiss bank accounts frozen by the Spanish courts. According to reports, Barcenas is becoming increasingly more aggressive as the prospect of spending many years in prison hits him. An incident on January 8 reported Barcenas confronting a van driver who was employed to take prisoners to a Madrid

British resident contributes to local museum MICHAEL STEPHENSON, a resident of Javea, has donated a series of plans of local castles to the Museu de Xabia. There are more than 50 detailed plans which are accompanied by photographs and drawings of important features of the castles, among which are Aielo de Rugat, Alcala and Borro. For many years Stephenson, and his colleagues Anne Scott and Ted Adams, have

been visiting the castles of the area and documenting them. Stephenson commented that he had a great curiosity in the castles that he drove past on his way into Valencia and so decided to visit and document them along with his friends. The plans are being catalogued by a local archaeologist, Josep Castello Mari, and will soon be visible on the museum website.

Get your own Spanish hamlet free A SPANISH mayor is offering to give away an entire hamlet for nothing. There’s just one condition. Whoever buys A Barca has to restore it to its former glory. The 15,000 square metres in northwestern Spain is a great project for those looking to do some renovation and restoration. Local communities are hoping that the area will be rejuvenated by the project. A Barca consists of 12 houses, nestled amid overgrown vegetation. Whoever takes on the project will have to preserve the houses. Another requirement for the development plan is to provide employment for people in the community. Centuries ago, A Barca (which translates as ‘small boat’ in Galician), was part of the royal road to Castille. It later served as a transportation hub for people, animals and goods crossing

the Miño river. The mayor of the municipality, Avelino de Francisco, said he is still looking for the right owner, despite more than 1,000 proposals made since March. According to Spanish newspaper, El Pais, the project that is being considered the most seriously at the moment is a British company that wants to turn A Barca into a rehabilitation centre for people suffering from cardiovascular disease. The mayor told BBC News: “[For] the person who comes here, the goal is to come and relax, there is no stress here... “We have hot springs, areas of rivers, mountains, we have wonderful hiking areas.” Reportedly, there are nearly 3,000 other empty villages in rural Spain, with more than half being in Galicia. Many people left the villages to go to the cities in search of a better life.

Selfie video at 140km/h GUARDIA CIVIL have identified a driver who was travelling at 140km/h on the A6 in Leon whilst filming his exploits on his mobile phone. The man, who was shown boasting about his driving abilities and overtaking a bus during the video, was driving a 40-tonne truck at the time. The speed limit for this type of vehicle is 90km/h. He faces a â‚Ź400 fine and the loss of four points from his licence for the speeding infraction. Further penalties for use of the phone whilst driving are likely.

TWO crew members have died and three are still missing after a fishing boat capsized off the coast of Asturias in Northern Spain. The Coastguard is continuing to search for the remaining members of the crew of a small fishing boat which got into difficulties 20 miles off the coast. The alert was raised by another boat in the area at the time, which then proceeded to rescue seven of the fishermen from the sinking vessel. The men were transferred to hospital by helicopter and are being treated for hypothermia and injuries sustained during the accident. Two are in a serious condition.

300 fight fires MORE than 300 people were needed to fight two scrubland fires which swept across Almeria. Nine helicopters and planes and 11 fire engines battled for hours to bring the blazes, fanned by high winds, under control. At Somontin the fire services were alerted early on Sunday morning of flames taking hold of forest and brushland. Despite being on the scene quickly, work was difficult, due to uneven terrain hampering vehicle access. By late morning, INFOCA (official body for the prevention and suppression of forest fires in Andalucia) advised that the fire seemed to be slowing, due to a favourable wind. Nobody was hurt, although a couple had to be evacuated from a caravan. INFOCA declared the fire as being stabilised at 3.56pm on the Sunday, and controlled just before noon on Monday. Unfortunately, just as the Somontin fire was stabilised, a second fire broke out, this time close to Lucainena del Torres and Sorbas. The area is predominantly scrubland, and the wind did not help as the blaze quickly took hold. Within a couple of hours, the flames and smoke could be seen from as far away as Vera, Turre and Mojacar. Residents of Mojacar spoke of ash landing on their properties, whilst Turre people could smell the burning. The red glow of flames against the clouds at dusk could be seen as far as the hills beyond Albox. A number of people left their homes on the outskirts of Sorbas and moved further afield, whilst the crews battled the flames.

One of Spain’s most wanted found in UK A SUSPECTED killer who is on Spain’s ‘most wanted’ list is now behind bars in Spain after being arrested in Britain. Romanian Vasile Lupu, 36, was tracked down weeks after being named in a top 10 most wanted gallery of Spain’s most dangerous fugitives. UK police swooped on a Bedfordshire address after receiving a tip-off that Lupu was there. UK officials are currently investigating how Lupu managed to enter the UK despite a European arrest warrant being issued for his capture. Lupu has been extradited to Spain, where he stands accused of the murder of Vicente Almela, 90, during a violent armed robbery. The suspect’s brother is also in a Spanish prison following extradition from Romania over the death of the pensioner. Mr Almela was found dead at his home in the village of Vall d’Uixo, near Castellon in Eastern Spain, on February 24. The pensioner is believed to have died of a heart attack after being bound by a gang of armed robbers. The man’s 87-year-old wife Consuelo survived the attack.

CAUGHT: Vasile Lupu. The mayor of Vall d’Uixo, Oscar Clavell, said Mr Almela died from “anguish or fright” and declared three days of mourning following the funeral. Lupu, who stands accused of murder, illegal detention, robbery with violence and wounding, is currently being held in a maximum-security prison in Madrid.

Learn a little humility… O

NE thing former Partido Popular Treasurer Luis Barcenas cannot be accused of is humility. Languishing behind bars as he awaits trial in the infamous Gurtel corruption case, he is said to be becoming more and more aggressive as the days go by. You would have thought having been caught with a reported €48 million stashed away in Swiss bank accounts he would have decided to keep a low profile until judgment is made in his case. But no, he is alleged to have confronted a van driver taking him for medical check-ups. He is also reported to have pushed a prison officer and refused to wear handcuffs, shouting: “I am not a criminal.” That ‘disagreement’ has led to

him being barred from exercising in the prison courtyard for 140 days as punishment. It also shows the attitude all too prevalent in politicians that they are above the rules that everyone else in society has to follow. It is time for Barcenas to reflect on his behaviour and, who knows, maybe lessen his overinflated opinion of himself. A little humility earlier in his life would have saved him from finding himself now behind bars. And maybe others, who seem to think they can do no wrong despite plundering millions from the Spanish people, should also reflect that they too could end up behind bars for a long time to come. Who knows, they may change their ways. I am not holding my breath.

Some improvement for mortgage victims BANKS rejected four out of every 10 requests to renegotiate mortgages under new government regulations in late 2013. This was an improvement on the 80 per cent rejection registered when the amendments first came into force, the Economy Ministry revealed. Changes announced in November 2012 to protect households and families in financial difficulties have since been extended and made more flexible. “Gradual acceptance has increased the number of applications,” said the ministry. A total of 4,523 applications were made to renegotiate mortgages in the last quarter of 2013. This exceeded all of those registered between March 2012 when the measures were introduced and March 2013 when 4,385 requests were received. Further changes now make it possible for families earning up to three times the minimum wage to apply for renegotiation where previously it was necessary to prove they had no income at all. The measures also include those whose financial circumstances have altered significantly in the last four years and whose repayments account for 50 per cent of their net income. Despite the new flexibility this does not mean that every mortgage can be renegotiated or that a property may be returned to the lender in lieu of settling the debt (dacion en pago).

Hacienda check-up for health insurance group PRIVATE health insurance group Bupa Sanitas is in the sights of Spain’s tax inspectors. The AETA agency, Spain’s equivalent of Inland Revenue, suspects that the group could owe Hacienda of up to €28.07 million. Sham share transactions within the Bupa Sanitas group allegedly enabled it to avoid paying €14.6 million in tax in 2007, revealed sources close to the current audit. Between 2008 and 2010, the group allegedly eluded payment of an annual €4.4 million, the same sources said. Agency inspectors are examining Bupa Sanitas’s acquisition of shares in UKbased Bupa Care Homes and Bupa Treasury, both belonging to the Bupa

COMPANIES advertise; it is what they do. Having first-hand experience of some of them, it occurs to me that their purpose in life is not to build their business but to invest in the advertising billboard industries. Is their spiel set out to attract new customers to replace the haemhorrage of disenchanted clients? Can it get worse? Yes. It is an anti-sell: research shows that victims of poor service on average tell 19 people about their bad experience. “Products today are getting very similar,” said David Beckinsell, formerly of National Opinion Polls. “There’s not that much difference between a small Ford and a small Nissan. It is service and image that sets a company apart from the rest.” Did you know that it costs three times as much to attract a new customer as it does

to retain an existing one? General Motors know it because they conducted the research that revealed this gem. I once spent an hour or so with Pam Morgan. Her advice: “Always exceed your customer’s expectations; they will then do your advertising for you.” Ms Morgan was largely responsible for their family company, Redrow Homes, becoming the UK’s biggest independent house builders. This wise advice is followed by 58 per cent of new businesses who put their survival down to providing quality service. A Red Star Parcels survey revealed that the most frequently cited reason for a company losing business were regular failings in quality, no longer offering value for money, and lack of basic courtesy. Don’t we know it. I was quick to learn that on the Costas. There are many companies, especially in the internet services, that sell on price rather than on quality. I have a suggestion. GAS: Pipeline from Africa lands in Almeria.

Ukraine’s loss could be Spain’s gain EUROPE will be materially affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Thirty per cent of EU gas comes from Russia and it will be Ukraine’s fault if it shivers once summer ends, Moscow claims. This could be Spain’s moment to step in. It has seven gas re-aeration plants where ships can load and unload and it receives Algerian gas via the Magreb and Medgaz pipelines. Were Russia to cut gas exports via Ukraine, or should the latter siphon off gas for its own needs, Spain could ship gas to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece and Turkey. At a pinch Spain could use its two

pipeline interconnections with France, although only in impracticably small quantities. For this reason the Spanish government wants Brussels to give priority to the Midcat pipeline in Cataluña which is already classed as ‘infrastructure of community interest’. This would connect Algeria’s Hassi R’mel fields with Central Europe, the government has pointed out, although it will not be operational until 2017, unlike the coastal gas plants. Operating at only 20 per cent capacity last year, they would welcome more tankers “with open arms,” according to industry sources.

Only the vote of the general assembly can do this. Spanish don’t see sweet reason like the Germans WHILE the Western European chocolate confectionery market reached a sweet £19 billion (€23 billion) in 2012, the Spanish trail way behind the Germans when it comes to a sweet tooth. Indeed, according to latest research by market analysts Mintel, Germany accounted for a quarter (24 per cent) of the Western European chocolate confectionery market in 2012, equating to a retail market value of £4.6 billion (€5.6 billion) in 2012. And despite falling by 7 per cent since 2010, sales were expected to grow by almost 4 per cent by the end of 2013. Meanwhile, France and the UK each hold a 20 per cent share of the market, with a retail value of £3.7 billion (€4.5 billion) respectively in 2012. The Spanish market was worth just £590 million (€717 million). And Germany’s reputation as a ‘chocolate nation’ is also reinforced by a per capita consumption of over eight kilos annually, by far the highest in Western Europe. In comparison, Brits eat 6.5 kilos per year, the French 5.7 kilos and the Italians and Spanish 1.7 kilos. Marcia Mogelonsky, Director of Innovation and Insight at Mintel, said: “Germany remains Europe’s largest chocolate market, despite the small fall from 2010. In order to keep up that pace, manufacturers would do well to look at what motivates German chocolate consumers, as they have some unexpected patterns in their eating and purchasing habits. Germans have a

strong tradition in the category, supported by a number of wellestablished and respected brands.” Looking at motivation for purchasing chocolate amongst buyers in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, it is the Germans who are the most likely to buy chocolate on impulse. Indeed, some 45 per cent of Germans buy it on impulse, while just 33 per cent of French, 30 per cent of Italians and 20 per cent of Spanish do so. As for Brits, 54 per cent of chocolate eaters buy chocolate on impulse. And not only are Germans impulsive chocolate buyers, but they are also second only to French consumers when it comes to buying chocolate to treat themselves. Indeed, more than three-quarters (76 per cent) of Germans and 84 per cent of French purchase the products as a special treat for themselves, or as something special to improve their moods. Meanwhile, two fifths (41 per cent) of Brits buy chocolate to eat it as comfort food. Just over half (58 per cent) of Italians and 66 per cent of Spanish chocolate-eaters buy the products to lift their moods or to treat themselves. Furthermore, satisfying a sweet craving is also one of the most popular reasons for purchasing chocolate among European consumers. Almost seven in 10 (66 per cent) Italian and six in 10 (60 per cent) German and Spanish chocolate buyers make product purchases to satisfy a sweet craving.

Chirpy invasion means no more days of peace... IT would be interesting to learn if any of your readers are experiencing this problem, which this year seems to be worse. There is a positive plague of house sparrows. With no natural predators, few cats, a mild climate and abundant food supplies, these birds are able to breed uncontrolled where I live. Dozens and dozens of them nest in neighbouring roofs and even more roost in surrounding trees. The summer has barely begun and I am already unable to leave terrace doors and windows open because their incessant noise, literally from dawn to dusk, is becoming intolerable. They move around in packs, fight continuously with each other, squawk loudly if anyone or anything approaches them and leave their droppings all over the terrace, walls and roof. All other wildlife is being driven away as they attack and chase away any other birds which come near. Each pair can breed up to four times a season, and will return to the same place each year to nest. Is there anything that can be done to stop this feathery infestation? A Wade, Benahavis (Malaga)

Going it alone SPAIN’S President Mariano Rajoy should have reacted immediately eight months ago in response to Catalan President Artur Mas’s call for an independent and sovereign nation. He should have imprisoned the rebel for treason. Instead, Rajoy simply repeats that he won’t allow the illegal and unconstitutional November referendum in Cataluña. As commander-in-chief of the only legitimate Spanish nation he should stop talking so much and act decisively to put an end to this seemingly endless but harmful farce that is undermining the already downtrodden morale and confidence of Spanish citizens.

Turn of phrase AN earlier correspondent referred to the dangers in taking a nonprofessional to act as an interpreter in court and on visits to doctors or hospitals. These are obviously two areas where anyone who translates for someone else needs a wide vocabulary and a good dose of common sense. But the writer failed to warn of the hazards posed by doctors who insist on practising their English. I recently accompanied a friend whose specialist – a charming man – wanted to speak English throughout. She thought he was telling her she needed to work when he was actually telling her she needed to walk! We only cleared up the misunderstanding when I asked him – in Spanish – which he meant. New international artist exhibits work JENNY ANNE MORRISON, an emerging international artist, is to have a solo exhibition in May. Inspired by the gift of a camera, Jenny has travelled the world and seized the opportunity to interpret on camera vibrant flamenco dancers, ballerinas, horses, landscapes, seascapes, sunsets, skies, people, places, feelings, faces; and indeed anything that has captured her eye and imagination. She commutes between Spain, Canada and Central London, and has a global list of clients. The year got off to a great start, as her work was juried and accepted by the prestigious Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. She then exhibited some of her work at the Parador in Javea, which proved to be a great success, and her work was very well received. On May 17, Jenny’s exhibition will kick off with an opening night at the L’om Restaurant in Pego, where guests will have the opportunity to preview her work, before the LAPS Springtime

Almond trees in early spring. Special Lunch, which will be held the following day, May 18. The exhibition then runs until May 23. Jenny is working with LAPS - Local Animal Protection Society - and a percentage of the money from the paintings sold will go to the charity. Jenny said: “My main objective as an artist is to inspire hope, to lift the spirit, to elevate the soul, and to give people inner peace and happiness.”

Teen Killers: Life Without Parole(Documentary) BBC 3 from 1:30am to 2:30am Documentary in which five of the 2,500+ people in the US serving life-without-parole sentences for crimes they committed when they were 17 or younger, all convicted for first degree murder, tell their stories. A bunch of hypocrites I

T’S the hypocrisy of some Islamists that really gets to me. Of course, I can only speak for Saudi Arabia where I lived for some eight years, but I’ve no reason to believe other Islamic states aren’t the same. They frown on homosexuality, with the direst of consequences for anyone who practises it, yet homosexuality is rife in the country. I was propositioned on an almost daily basis, even by the taxi driver who drove me from the airport on my first visit. (I was, of course, much prettier then!) They insist on their right to build mosques in every country they land on but would NEVER give permission for a church to be erected in their domain. Adultery is punishable by death, yet they allow a man to have five wives; if that’s not legalised adultery, I don’t know what is. Paedophilia is also punishable by death, but

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT they consider a female ready for marriage at their first menstruation. They frown on gambling, but, in the casinos of the world, are the biggest gamblers of all. They ban the use of alcohol, but when I was there I had it on impeccable authority that at that time Saudi Arabia was one of the biggest importers of Johnny Walker whisky in the world - and JW couldn’t even show it on their books. (I wonder where all that black money went!) The list simply goes on and on. No, to me hypocrisy is one of the cardinal sins. Mind you when you look at the antics of some of our politicians, glass houses and stones come firmly to mind. Ah, well. As far as the schools now

being investigated in the socalled ‘Trojan horse’ affair are concerned, I maintain that any establishment believed to have been taken over by extremists or indeed any discovered segregating pupils, being taught by women shrouded from head to foot, refusing to have English as a first language or indeed retaining any curriculum that goes against the democracy and customs of the UK, should immediately be closed down. They should have all assets and grants frozen and only be reopened after being completely reorganised and re-staffed. Any threat to the welfare of our children should be dropped on like a ton of bricks. Don’t hold yer breath! I’m delighted and proud to report that my lad David won gold for Spain in the individual class European Karate championships last week. In the team events they also took a bronze and silver. A

They’ll ask my husband. Even in restaurants men get served first.” She added: “I think there was sexism in the workforce in the UK but they can’t really get away with it now with all the laws in place. TRYING to be too perfect could be ruining your health. Research suggests that striving for perfection causes not only stress, but also physical illness leading to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia and even heart disease. Experts, including Doctor Danielle Molnar, a psychologist at Brock University in Canada, are suggesting perfectionism should be considered as a risk factor for disease in the same way as obesity and smoking. She said: “We’re always promoting perfectionism and its benefits of academic and professional achievement, but it’s such a strong factor for so many illnesses.” There are said to be three types of perfectionists: • Self-oriented, who focus on their personal standards of perfection; • Other-oriented, who have exacting standards for those around them; • Socially prescribed, who believe that other people, including their parents or bosses, demand perfection from them.

New fathers also at risk of baby blues

A NEW study has revealed that new fathers are at risk of depression as doctors call for fathers, as well as mothers, to be screened for post-natal depression. The research has also shown that new fathers aged in their mid-20s are most likely to succumb to depression. In the first five years after the birth, depression in fathers increased by 68 per cent in a survey of more than 10,000 men whose average age was 25. Previous research has shown

depressed fathers will use more corporal punishment and read and interact less with their children and are more likely to be stressed and neglectful. Screen-loving teenagers in danger from long-term spinal damage FOUR in 10 teenagers have suffered from back or neck pain, which chiropractors claim is through spending too much time slouched in front of the TV or computer screen. They say teens are in danger of doing long-term damage to their spines as a survey of more than 460 parents of 11 to 16-year-olds found that 23 per cent of teens are spending between two and four hours a day watching TV, while a quarter spend the same amount of time on a laptop, tablet or computer.

Experts warn of sun hazards EACH year the number of cases of melanoma skin cancer increases in Spain by 10 per cent. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the odds of getting skin cancer are tripled every decade and the disease currently affects around 160,000 people worldwide. In Spain, cases have increased 38 per cent in the last four years and it is estimated that the incidence in the country of non-melanoma skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) is seven times higher than that of melanoma. As a result, medical professionals have decided to launch the ‘Euromelanoma 2014’ campaign. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the risks of sun exposure, educate people about using proper sun protection and to encourage getting any unusual moles or marks on the skin checked out. It also aims to educate

Help at hand to control shaking SPANISH neurologists are working on developing a ‘smart’ glove able to control shaking caused by Parkinson’s disease. The team in Madrid are working on the final phase of the Neuro-Tremor Project with the Centre for Advanced Scientific Research at the University of Gottingen, Germany. The glove has been tested on 80 patients aged between 40 and 80, and measures how muscles behave during the shake. The data obtained then works to send impulses through a set of electrodes to regulate the tremor through neuro-stimulation. The project was launched three years ago with funding from the EU, aimed at finding alternative methods to drugs and surgical treatments to improve the quality of life for sufferers.

Colorado’s enduring links to mother-ship Spain

The brotherhood of ‘Penitentes’ assumed the critical role in keeping the Hispanic traditions alive in those remote areas without clergy. Many theorise that there is a connection between the still existent Penitentes of the San Luis Valley and the 16th century Penitentes of Spain. For example, there are many similarities in the Christmas season processions throughout the valley and those performed in Sevilla and Granada. Perhaps the most curious tie of the valley’s direct relationship to Spain has been a recent medical discovery. Doctors at some of the area’s medical schools have documented disproportionate levels of breast cancer within the women of the valley. The genetic mutation that has caused this particular type of virulent breast cancer had previously been found only in Jewish women with a European Mediterranean lineage. Yet all these new patients were Hispanic Catholics of the San Luis Valley. These ontological hard facts have raised some interesting overtures. It is well known that during the Middle Ages, the Jews of Spain were expelled or were forced to convert (becoming ‘conversos’). These exiles went as far as the New World and it is not hard to imagine that many ventured up the Rio Grande to the northernmost outpost of the San Luis Valley. Rumours of secret Spanish Jewry have floated around the valley for years. Locals have long noted that the original Spanish conquistador to the valley, Juan de Onate (1598), had ‘converso’ relatives and documented conversos in his expedition. Furthermore the valley is home to some local customs such as sweeping the dust to the centre of the room, covering mirrors while mourning a loved one and the Friday night lighting of candles, all tied to ancient Jewish customs. To be sure, it is not uncommon to see examples of colonial Spanish architecture or hear Spanish being spoken while visiting the American South-West. Yet one would be hard-pressed to find a more direct link between the New World to mother-ship Spain than the evidence found in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, USA. These links with the past have proven to be a successful formula for sustained Spanish life in the valley. That, in and of itself, is a very Spanish attribute.

HE small pueblos of this valley are quintessentially Spanish; sun-baked plazas, adobe-built homes with vines and fruit trees growing in grassless yards, crosses crowning church spires and desolate cemeteries. Even the names of the pueblos remain true to form: Antonito, Conejos, Guadalupe, Monte Vista, San Juan, etc. Are we referring to a remote valley in Andalucia somewhere? In Valencia or Aragon? No, these are the names and descriptions of a remote valley an ocean apart from Spain. This article directs your attention to the San Luis Valley in my home state of Colorado, USA. The valley is high (2,200-2,500 metres), large, flat and desert-like, surrounded on three sides by some of Colorado’s highest peaks (4,400 metres). The headwaters of the mighty Rio Grande are born here. It is the geographical remoteness and the severe terrain that have been most instrumental in shaping the valley’s unique connection to mother-ship Spain and their Iberian roots. Foods like Serrano ham obviously have a lot of salt as we can taste it but there are less obvious high-saltcontent foods, including cheese and almost any ready-to-eat meal, these can lead to high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems. To avoid any health problems it is best to eat around 0.75 grammes a day.

Barbecued food may not be good THE wonderful climate in southern Spain means that barbecues are highly popular with ex-pat residents, but they may not be the healthiest way of cooking food. Burning wood or charcoal creates polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These are noxious chemicals which have been shown to cause various types of cancer in laboratory animals. Workers

exposed to PAHs have also been found to have more cancers than average. Meat contains nitrogen and this combines with PAHs from the burnt fuel to make them even more dangerous. Experts are still arguing about the degree of risk that this poses to humans, but in the meantime, limiting the use of barbecues would seem to be a good idea.

Fish are changing sex A STUDY that began in 2007 has finally proven that some water contaminants produce sex changes in some fish species in the Basque Country. Researchers at the Cell Biology in Environmental Toxicology department of the University of the Basque Country have proven that some contaminants in the water bring about a ‘feminization’ in some of the local fish. The study started in 2007 after the first cases of the mutations were found in Urdaibai during a random quality analysis. Urdaibai is one of the areas with the highest sex change rates within the studied estuaries.

Lexus unveils new premium crossover LEXUS has released photographs of its allnew, premium crossover, which was launched at the 2014 Beijing International Auto Show. The NX, Lexus’s first entry into the mid-size SUV market, has been conceived as an edgy, emotional design to appeal to new customers, say the manufacturers. Two LF-NX concept vehicles (LF stands for Lexus Future) introduced at the 2013 Frankfurt and Tokyo Motor Shows were well received and substantially influenced the final design of the production NX . The NX has been designed to appear as though it was cast from one piece of metal, with flared wheel arches housing 17- or 18-inch wheels to provide a crouching, ‘muscular’ stance, say the designers.

DESIGN: Edgy and emotional.

The angular shape uses the aggressive Lexus signature spindle grille as its centrepiece, reinforced by innovative LED headlamps and daylight running lamps. The spindle grille blends seamlessly into a sculpted bonnet, creating a strongly contrasting surface expression with a sense of depth. The side profile is supposed to make the car

instantly recognisable as a Lexus, accentuated by a roofline set towards the back of the vehicle for maximum visual effect. An innovative outer mirror and a world first door handle mechanism with a hidden key barrel and integrated lighting add to the premium appearance by creating a smooth finish along the side of the vehicle. The rear is punctuated

by Lexus’s signature ‘L’ shape combination lamps, each with seamless LED lighting. The bodywork echoes the spindle grille design at the front. The interior of Lexus NX brings a sense of excitement; with a design more like that of a sports car, says Lexus. Supermoto kicks off in Alicante THE first round of the Spanish Supermoto championship takes place at the Chicharra Karting circuit in Villena, Alicante on Sunday, April 27. With both of the FordDunn brothers from Murcia competing in the Open and Master championship classes the action is sure to be fast and exciting. The Chicharra race circuit features a variety of both high and low speed corners before the riders fire themselves off one of the faster curves into the off-road section with high-speed jumps and turns before rejoining the circuit to complete the lap.

CANDALS revealing the sordid behaviour of Britain’s elite clearly suggest the establishment closes ranks to protect its accused. Mainstream media are investigative but two lines of enquiry are shunned by news desks. Media names and shames but those exposed are the tip of the iceberg. Others are untouchable. Why are so many in public life corrupted and compromised? The numbers involved are out of proportion to the general population. Stanley Baldwin, Benjamin Disraeli and David Lloyd George are just three prime ministers who alluded to covert forces behind the theatre of parliament and congress.

US President Woodrow Wilson: “There is a power so organised, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.” US President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919): “Behind ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.” Our less sophisticated electorates cannot comprehend why government is so out of touch. Is it because politicians serve neither the public nor national interests but those of others? The elite’s salaries are insignificant compared to other perks of power. These include a get-out-of-jail guarantee for fiscal crimes or debauchery likely to get lesser men years behind bars. A token few sordid individuals like Cyril Smith MP and Jimmy Savile are fingered only after death.

Card-carrying Communist and double agent Labour MP Tom Driberg, like Cyril Smith MP, was constantly arrested for gross behaviour in public toilets. A telephone call was enough to get them away from the desk sergeant. Too many to name yet those involved make up a

debauched microcosm of British society. What of the debauched behaviour of Noel Coward, novelist Somerset Maugham, occultist Aleister Crowley, Winston Churchill, Lord Boothby and others who used the Krays, later Jimmy Savile and others to arrange ‘parties’ that shame Britain. Is it because once ensnared these individuals can be counted upon to do as they are told?

Easter Week successes at the Javea Green triples competiton THE Easter Triples Open Competition played at Javea attracted an entry of 20 teams. The teams were put into Groups of five with the winnersgoing through to the semi-finals. Rising to the challenge in the first semi-final were ‘The Clicks’ (Harry and Gail Chick and Clive Corbin) and ‘Walkers Crisps’ (Brian Walker, Daphne Ramage and Dick Baron), ‘The Clicks’ emerged victorious from this encounter. In the second semi-final ‘The Wanderers’ (Alan Phillips teamed up with two El Cid bowlers – Jean McLoughlin and Maureen Coulson) faced up to 'Taylor Made' (Brian Taylor, Paul and Halina Leeder). ‘The Wanderers’ came through triumphant. The final battle then commenced to see who would lift the Easter Triples Trophy. Fortune ultimately favoured ‘The Wanderers’ who won by 12 points to 6.
