€60million smugglers walk free from court EIGHT Egyptian sailors caught redhanded with nearly 10 tonnes of hashish worth €60 million have been set free by a judge. Judge Fernando Andreu of the National Court decided that a new law preventing Spanish judges investigating ‘international crimes’ meant the sailors were out of his jurisdiction.
The sailors were detained about 25 to 30 nautical miles south of Cabo de Gata in Almeria. Customs planes spotted a suspicious vessel, not flying the Spanish flag, but with Arabic inscriptions on the bow. Customs boarded the boat, and discovered 450 bales of hashish, around 9.8 tonnes. The boat was seized and the crew presented to
magistrates in Almeria. When referred to National Court No 4, Judge Fernando Andreu released them. This was against the advice of the public prosecutor’s office, responsible for the fight against drugs in Spain, which argued that international treaties allowed for their continued imprisonment whilst awaiting trial.

Adolfo Suarez in recognition of his contribution to the country. Quiles said Adolfo Suarez was an essential part of the Spanish transition from dictator-
ship to democracy; his legacy is one of dialogue and core values and as such he deserves a tribute. Adolfo Suarez was president from 1976 to
1981 and led Spain through one of its most difficult periods in history. He legalised political parties and got rid of the feared Cortes Franquistas.

Extreme drought hits the region
COAG, the Andalucia Coordinator of Agriculture and Livestock, has formally asked ENESA, the ministry responsible for agricultural insurance, that the province of Almeria be declared an area of “extreme drought.” In the formal request the COAG states that the rains have been scarce this year only 12 litres per square metre so far this year. This is not enough water and has led to sparse grazing fields for livestock. The
request goes on to say that the classification of Almeria as being in a “light drought” is not correct. Antonio Moreno, spokesperson for COAG, says that if it doesn’t rain soon it will be very difficult for livestock to survive as they need pastures and do not do well eating prepared feeds. Moreno stated that in order for the insurance to be valid and the livestock farmers to be compensated, the area must be declared to be in extreme drought.

139 solar panels recovered IN a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and the French and Italian police, 139 solar panels stolen in Italy, have been recovered at Almeria Port. Two men - one Italian, aged 20, and one Spaniard, aged 29 - have been detained in the port of Almeria on suspicion of receiving stolen goods. The men had come through customs with, supposedly, nothing to declare but on closer inspection of their van the Guardia Civil found a
large amount of solar panels hidden among the household goods the two men said they were transporting. The two men were unable to produce the relevant paperwork for the solar panels in their van and, after a little more investigation, the Guardia Civil were able to confirm that the panels were part of a lot of 1,706 solar panels that had been stolen in Italy. The men are on conditional release pending court proceedings in Almeria.
€200 million debt THE province of Almeria is owed more than €200 million for healthcare by the Junta de Andalucia. Police station RESIDENTS of the neighbourhood of Torrecardenas have asked the Almeria City Council to provide them with a neighbourhood police station to better control the area.

IFTY-EIGHT per cent of Spaniards plan to take a trip over Easter, 5 per cent more than last year. A survey carried out by travel site TripAdvisor reveals that almost 70 per cent will stay in Spain and that the favourite destination over Easter is Andalucia, followed by Cataluña, Castilla y Leon and Valencia. Forty-eight per cent say that they seek a cultural holiday, as opposed to 21 per cent who want to spend their free time on the beach. Fiftyfour per cent will be travelling more than 500 kilometres to their destination, and 60 per cent will go by car. Fifty-two per cent have been planning their Easter holidays for several months, and while 44 per cent have the same budget as last year, 21 per cent intend to spend more and 15 per cent will be tightening their purse strings. Graffiti arrests FOUR youths have been detained by the national police in Almeria capital for spray painting in several
parts of the city. Two plainclothes police officers surprised one graffiti artist as he was painting a cash dispenser; he had eight cans of paint with him in a rucksack which the police confiscated. The same morning another three youths, among them a minor, were found painting a
kiosk and a phone box. Police confiscated all 14 cans of paint they had with them. At the time they were apprehended they were in the process of painting their tags; a tag is a graffiti artist’s way of signing their work. All four youths stand accused of damaging urban furnishings and defacing the city’s walls.
Workers’ unease ‘cannot continue’ JOAQUIN JIMENEZ, spokesperson for the PSOE in Almeria, has stated that the unease which Social Services workers are feeling cannot continue. This unease, apparently felt by workers in all four centres, has been caused by just one person, the director in Ciudad Jardin. Jimenez and the workers have requested that this problem not be solved by simply moving people around, as the problem would remain the same, but are asking for a more permanent solution.

A Spanish home for English bowls ENGLISH-STYLE bowls has found a home in Mojacar with a brand new, specially made green. With a surface area of 625 square metres of Astroturf the open air bowling green is only 100 metres from the Marina Mar hotel. It has six lines of play and capacity for 48 players. To complement this new green there is a clubhouse with, among
other things, a bar/ terrace, offices, bowling carts and toilet facilities. At the inauguration of the Mojacar Bowls Club, Ricardo Escudero, the director of Servigroup which is managing the green and club, expressed his pleasure with the new club and installations, saying that it completes the sporting offers in the area.
Taiwanese ambassador visits Macael THE ambassador of Taiwan, Javier Chingshan Hou, has visited Macael. The purpose of the visit was the interest he had expressed in seeing the village and its international marble industry, led by Cosentino, a local company that sells its marble all over the world. The visit began in the quarry and ended in the town hall where the mayor, Raul Martinez, explained the process of
marble extraction and the business opportunities that this presented to the village. After a walk around to see where and how the marble is used in the streets, the ambassador visited the Cosentino plant where he was able to see, first-hand, how Silestone, Deckton and different coloured marbles were prepared for sale. Marble is considered a great luxury in Taiwan.

New APSA kennels almost complete THE new APSA kennels are well on their way to completiton on a site near Albox. Di, chairwoman of APSA, was delighted to report the steady progress at the recent APSA AGM at Jacks in Albox. The registered charity has been in existence for more than 10 years and continues to find homes for dogs whilst running a neutering and education programme funded solely through the APSA shop and events organised by volunteers and supporters. Di reported that she found homes for 101 dogs last year but the charity took in many more, it now has more dogs than ever and the

finding, the charity is building its own kennels nearer to Albox. The red tape and regulations make the process frustrating at times and work, done by volunteers, is dependent on donations of building materials and money. At the AGM, plans for open days at the
kennels were discussed and Di said the charity will continue to kennel dogs privately to help with finances. Su is planning one of her fashion shows, always a sell-out, in June so look out for details. They are all also looking forward to the official opening of the kennels. Volunteers are desperately needed to help with the new kennels, also any

Mojacar: witness it’s Arabic past MOJACAR Council has set up a series of walks to take in the sights of the town’s Arabic past. The heritage department of the council is now recommending various walks around the town to see the different influences that have been left by both visitors and occupiers through the centuries. Mojacar is rich in medieval Arabic architecture, examples of which can be seen all over the old part of town. The council recommends leaving the car and going around on foot or by bicycle.

Broke in using tow truck FOUR men have been detained by the Guardia Civil for theft from a farm in the municipality of Olula del Rio. The Guardia Civil were alerted to the robbery by a local resident who noticed activity on the usually deserted farm. The men stole, among other things, several pieces of antique farm equipment, the chassis of a Seat 600 and a lorry axle. The damage they caused to the house, while breaking into it, has been valued at €4,000 by the owners. They broke into the house by attaching a tow truck arm to the gate over the front door and pulling it away. This removed bricks and has damaged the structure of the old house. The Guardia Civil traced the men through the tow truck that was used in the robbery. The four men, aged between 18 and 38, stand accused of breaking and entering and causing damage to property.

PSOE takes up the fight for water in Cantoria THE PSOE political party in Cantoria has taken up the residents’ fight for the water supply to be managed by the council, rather than a private company, and made it their own. Around 50 people demonstrated in the main square with a banner that read: “The water belongs to the people, not Galasa, public management now!” Galasa is the private company which has taken over the management of the water supply in the village. The residents of Cantoria have explained that they want more information about the takeover of the water systems as they fear that their bills will go up. They went on to state that the vice-president of Galasa gave a talk to the village after which there were many doubts, on the side of the

DGT offers help THE DGT, traffic control, has offered to help councils across Almeria in reducing the number of accidents on the roads. They are hoping to work with local police to stem the rise of accidents.

Motorbike firebug A MAN of 19, a resident of Mojacar, who was apparently trying to steal a motorbike managed to set a van on fire in the process. The Guardia Civil in Garrucha arrested the youth for setting two vehicles on fire. While he was trying to start, and steal, the motorbike, he caused a short-circuit that started a fire which later spread to the van parked
next to it. Firemen had to be called to the scene of the fire which completely destroyed the two vehicles. During their investigations the Guardia Civil were alerted to the presence of the young man in the street at the time the fire happened and decided to question him. He confessed to the crimes and was arrested for theft.

The 17 local exporters of tinned goods sold more than two million kilos of produce in Europe in the first months of this year; this is a 207 per cent increase on the same period of last year. The total income from this was â‚Ź2.5 million which is an increase of 244 per cent on last year, with most going to Germany.

When the Guardia Civil questioned him about the loss of the rifle he initially said that he had lost it and when asked if there had been a break in he denied it. However, several days later, he went back to the station and reported a burglary at his house in which the supposed burglars had managed to break all the locks on the door and the arms cabinet but had taken only one gun. The Guardia Civil then investigated his story and tried to find those responsible but the evidence did not fit the story. After a quick interrogation the man admitted to making up the story in order to avoid having to pay a fine.
Open day THE Guardia Civil in Adra held an open day for nearly 2,000 local students. There were various activities for the students including visits to police boats and helicopters.
Fewer jobless UNEMPLOYMENT in Almeria for the month of March has gone down 1.9 per cent. Compared with the same month last year there are 1,553 less unemployed.

Solidarity race MORE than 250 people participated in the Wolfram Mojacar solidarity race. Wolfram syndrome is a neurodegenerative disease that provokes diabetes insipidus, deafness, short sight and a wide range of other afflictions. Organised by the Spanish Association of Wolfram Syndrome Sufferers the race marked World Rare Disease Day. Other events to mark the day were round table discussions and a cycle of conferences about rare diseases. After the seven kilometre race there was a meeting, attended by families of sufferers, in which thanks were given to the organisers and all other contributors including the local police and the Mojacar Civil Protection Service.

Eco efficient store brings new jobs SPANISH supermarket chain Consum has opened its first store in Almeria capital and created 25 new jobs. The new supermarket, on Angel Jover Street, will be joined by four others in 2014, according to the Consum spokesperson, creating almost 100 new jobs in the area. As a co-operative with a social conscience, the creation of stable, new jobs is of
paramount importance to the Consum ethos. The new shop forms part of the ‘Eco Efficient’ line of supermarkets which, through energy efficient methods, are more respectful of the environment. The stores consume around 25
per cent less energy than a conventionally designed supermarket. This line consists of 285 shops and continues to expand. At nearly two million members, and growing, Consum is the largest co-operative in Andalucia.

Well done. Now let’s keep Mojacar, Garrucha, Los Gallardos, Vera and all the surrounding areas litterfree! One group which included Jessica Simpson (Mojacar Positiva Se Mueve) spent some 12 manhours picking up almost 30 bags of rubbish and filling a dozen or so black plastic containers of trash between Mojacar and Turre alone. They even filled most of the roadside public litter bins with other people’s garbage.
With the Easter holidays approaching, all that can be said is that the main roads look pretty good right now. So, please, name and shame the culprits who don’t care one hoot and simply toss their trash anywhere, in any place, at any time. We’ll see if they can keep their area clean - and this goes for the wasteland close to the Taj restaurant and the Chinese shop near the roundabout at the bottom end of Turre. Get this cleared ... it’s an eyesore!! I will try to do a bit - will anyone else?

Fashion show a sell-out LAST Saturday’s fashion show, held at Greg & Co in Turre and presented by Turre’s newest and largest ladies and gents fashion store, The Dressing Room, was a sell-out success. In all, more than 36 outfits were presented by
the models, who were all local ladies, and featured new spring ranges as well as classy day and evening wear. Afterwards, the ladies enjoyed a buffet lunch whilst browsing some of the clothes offered for sale.
New mobility plans for Cabo de Gata THE mobility plan presented by the Junta de Andalucia for the National park Cabo de Gata, Almeria, will include bike lanes and new bus and sea routes. The new bike lanes and bus routes will go from the beach at Torregarcia de Almeria right up to the beach at El Algarrobico in Carboneras. It is hoped that the sea routes will also cover this area. The initiative for the bike lanes was started in 2005 but nothing came to fruition and as a consequence there is not one metre of bike lanes in the whole of the park. According to the Junta there are many parts of the road that need bike lanes, as there are not even hard shoulders for the cyclists to ride on.

WO stories that hit the UK national press sum up the differing images of the Brit abroad. One summed up the boozy tourist after sun and sangria and a ‘good time’ at all costs that brings a shudder down many an expatriate’s spine. The other was a family tragedy that showed two mums making the ultimate sacrifice to save their beloved children from the sea. In one, a bride-to-be didn’t even make it as far as Spain for her hen party before getting into trouble. She ended up fighting with one of her bridesmaids on the flight over. distress and even fear they may have suffered as she pursued her own agenda. On the other hand, two British mothers drowned as they tried to rescue their children from the sea off a Tenerife beach. The two women, believed to be from the same extended family, were pulled from the water but could not be revived. The children survived the ordeal. So on one hand we have a selfish troublemaker, on the other two women who were totally selfless to the extent of losing their lives. Let us hope that the bride-to-be learns some humility and regard for other people. Should she have children maybe she will understand why some people are willing to give up their lives for the people they love.

Taxi-drivers up security after attack at gunpoint TAXI-DRIVERS in Almeria are beefing up their security measures after a new attack on one of their drivers. The Guardia Civil have met with members of Tele
Taxi, the principal taxi drivers association in Almeria capital, with the aim of reinforcing their security measures after a driver was mugged at gunpoint in Roquetas de Mar. The police are looking for two black men suspected of perpetrating this attack in the Cortijos de Marin area, and another vicious attack at the beginning of the month. Angel Hidalgo, vice president of Tele Taxi, said the Guardia Civil are hoping to implant new protocols of
what the drivers should do to lessen the risk of future attacks. These include how to behave when being mugged and always keeping the GPS on in order to be located by the police. Hidalgo went on to explain that the attacks have worsened since the beginning of the financial crisis. He attributes this to the fact that people who mug taxi drivers are looking for a quick fix and, due to their constant presence in the streets, the drivers are an easy target.

Jailed for domestic abuse A MAN from Roquetas de Mar has been sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for hitting his partner with a shepherd’s crook and threatening her with a knife. The accused man’s appeal was denied and he received six years for hitting his partner and another 18 months for threats. He also has to pay a fine of €300. On one occasion he threatened his partner with a knife in front of the Guardia Civil, although when he saw the officers he dropped it. According to his neighbours he had a violent streak and frequently had physical arguments with his partner, hitting her on many occasions.

A Sunday stroll with Hash House SOMEWHERE in a cortijo near Chirivel, the Indalo Hash House Harriers gathered on a bright but cold and windy Sunday morning; some for a run, others for a walk. Both routes climbed into the beautiful pine forests, which skirt the A92N motorway and that prompted some of the hashers into a not-soaccurate nor tuneful,
rendition of “The hills are alive with the sound of music”. Fortunately, what goes up, must come down and a nice gentle ramble led both groups back to the start. After the group had rehydrated themselves and decimated bags of nibbles, the ‘circle’ was formed. Down-downs were
awarded for various misdemeanours, some of which were well deserved, like noise pollution for singing on the hash or using the old excuse of ‘an injury’ to avoid doing the hash at all! Then steaming bowls of chilli con carne and vegetable stew were provided by our hosts Chris

NEWS Anti-drugs petition to protect school THE PSOE in Roquetas de Mar, Almeria, has requested more vigilance around the Las Marinas high school in order to prevent the sale of drugs to teenagers. The request came in the wake of a wave of vandalism and drug dealing in and around the school area. Their petition points out that there are several points of sale within metres of the educational centre. They want a higher presence of police in the area in order to discourage the dealers, before the situation gets out of control. “Historically, the Las Marinas area has not been a problematic one and as such the problem should be fairly easy to control,” states the request. The local Parents/ Teachers Association has backed the PSOE petition.

Although many had been to Cartagena before, there is such a wide variety of museums and points of interest that nobody could fail to find something in such a varied city. There was the visit to the Naval Museum and the Archaeological Museum, the latter being free for pensioners and the former free to all. A happy group returned home around 6.30pm, all talking of the group’s next trip to Gorafe on April 30, which is an area of megalithic sites, 855 metres above sea level, with a current popu-

Qatar games for local player TYLER KNOWLES, 14, is to go to Qatar between April 10-17, to represent Almeria at the Aspire Academy football tournament. He will be playing against 10 Spanish teams, including Sevilla FC, Valencia FC, Athletico Madrid and Malaga FC, and two local Qatari teams, the Qatar selection and the Aspire Academy. Having been scouted for several teams, Knowles joined Almeria in August of last year. He has played for the selection of both Almeria and Murcia teams and most years he received the accolade of top goal scorer. After moving to Spain at the age of three, Knowles got his start playing for the Huercal Overa team, where he played from the age of five until last year.

MEP calls for oil prospecting ban DESPITE other differences, Marina Alta towns are united in opposing oil exploration in the Gulf of Valencia. During a recent visit to Javea, MEP Andres Perello said the Spanish government could easily settle the debate. Member states have the last word regarding gas or oil prospecting within their own borders or territorial waters. “Europe would not say a word,” Perello predicted. The MEP called on the national government to ban explorations. “They will say that I’m a radical but we cannot allow a way of life to disappear,” he said. During his recent visit, Perello had talks with Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi and the president of Javea’s fishing guild Moises Erades, who is also manager of the local fishing guild’s seafood outlet, AMMA. Instead of the expected 641 civil service posts the offer has been raised to 950, announced Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro. The selection process has been reformed, he confirmed, with experience taken into greater account and equal opportunities for women. Montoro’s announcement came during the presentation of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report on Public Administration reform in Spain. Approximately 238 of the new employees will go to the government’s tax collecting agency AEAT to boost the number of
employees assigned to tracking down fiscal fraud. A further 210 will be assigned to local administrations as town hall auditors and a ‘significant’ number will fill vacancies within national administrative bodies. While the creation of 950 new jobs is encouraging this does little to balance the 374,000 posts lost in public administration over the last two years, said the UGT trade union. The unions were irritated by Montoro’s announcement, sources claimed, as they were already in conversations with the government regarding the new jobs. Cuts affect Spaniards abroad STEPS taken by Germany and Belgium to protect their benefits system are affecting Spanish immigrants. The measures were introduced to stem the flood of Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants once restrictions were lifted last January, but there are currently 6,592 Spanish immigrant workers in Germany who are now jobless. Finding work is less easy than it looks, said Silvia Nuñez , who has a degree in English and recently returned to Spain. “It depends on your profession and if your German is good.” Belgium is already cutting benefits to immigrants it considers to be a drain on the system. Last year it stopped benefits to 2,712 EU citizens of whom 323 were Spanish. After Romanians and Bulgarians they are the most-affected by the country’s new regulations.

Tax agency digs for fraud SPAIN’S tax collection body, the AEAT agency is planning a two-pronged attack. Now that tax declarations are due, the agency will home in on online commerce which now moves €10.6 billion a year, said AEAT’s director general Santiago Menendez. The agency has also been authorised to check the computers of small and medium businesses for ‘Caja B’ black money camouflaged by double accounting. E-commerce can look forward to ‘far-reaching control’ with the participation of AEAT’s crack group Onif, renowned for locating fiscal fraud, promised the authority’s director general Santiago Menendez. “AEAT is facing new forms of fraud because the internet facilitates totally submerged activities,” claims the text of the agency’s control programme. “Others appear to be foreign but are in fact Spanish
ONLINE COMMERCE: Computers to be checked. companies using the internet to avoid their tax obligations.” The agency will use information circulating on the internet to piece together information on taxpayers to determine whether or not they are involved in undeclared commercial activities. Tax inspectors will monitor how many visits to a web page result in sales, Menendez explained. They will also check
whether tax is paid on earnings from advertisers who pay to appear on websites. Manufacturers who sell their products on the internet will come under scrutiny to ensure that they pay ‘adequate’ tax in Spain, the director general revealed.
Specialist AEAT staff will also examine computers to detect possible manipulation of accounts sheets, double accounting or partial concealment of a company’s activities. Yet more inspectors will visit firms and shops to check that no payments of more than €2,500 have been received in cash. And, as always, AEAT’s hitmen and women will continue to home in on taxpayers whose ‘external signs of wealth’ do not correspond to their tax declarations or declarations of personal assets.

If you are deceitful they sense it without necessarily saying so. Explain what needs doing and why. It is unsettling to be given a bill without a break down. Failure to do so invites the allegation that you cheat or are over-priced. Transparency keeps customers happy and contented clients become unpaid sales staff. A man bought a business. The
first thing he did was ask for a list of lost clients. He discovered most had left due to poor service. By informing them of the change of ownership and addressing their concerns he recovered most of them. Leave several business cards in your customer’s home or premises where they can be seen. Respectfully ask your customer to recommend you. Ask if they have friends or family who may be interested in your service. The most important rule of all: Always thank your client for their custom. By following these basic rules you can double, even treble your turnover without it adversely affecting your outgoings.

ENERGY BILLS: Households are struggling to pay.
Energy poor Spain A GROWING number of energy-poor Spaniards cannot maintain their homes at an adequate temperature. A household is classed as energy or fuel poor when a family cannot meet the cost of basic energy needs or when it must allocate an excessive proportion of the family income to pay its energy bills. People with energy problems have increased by 50 per cent since 2008, found ‘Fuel poverty in Spain,’ a study by Spain’s Association of Environmental Sciences (ACA). The preliminary results suggest that the most significant increase in energy poverty occurred
between 2010 and 2012. The study revealed that 10 per cent of Spanish households - approximately 4 million people - are now energy poor, with one out of every three families affected by unemployment experiencing fuel poverty. Those on pensions or living in rural and underpopulated areas are also at risk. Energy poverty is a contributing factor to between 2,300 and 9,300 premature deaths in Spain each year. Energy-efficient buildings, fighting climate change and reducing the European Union’s energy dependence are amongst solutions to the problem.

FOR those fortunate enough to be employed, a salary thankfully lands in the bank account each month, but despite concerns about bills, mortgage payments and future costs, most people or households are not very good at keeping track of this money. A new report hailing from the US has revealed that when it comes to being smart about money and making sure to tie up loose financial ends, many adults are failing miserably. And the same rings true for grown-ups all over the world. Thirty four per cent of
those surveyed admitted that they constantly carry month-to-month credit card debt. It’s so easy to just stick a cost on your credit card and tell yourself that you’ll pay it off at the end of the month. But in reality other costs always creep up and all that good intention to pay off credit card debt ultimately gets postponed. Which tragically for your savings results in paying lots of hard earned money purely on interest. But you’re not alone making these financial mistakes, almost half of those questioned would grade themselves a ‘C’ or lower when it comes to financial know-how, while 61 per cent of adults don’t even have a budget.
Public housing is not so available THE Department of Development and Housing of the Junta de Andalucia regional government (CFVJA) has opened files on eight different financial entities which possess VPO properties (council housing) and are not handing them over to the relevant councils. According to sources within the Junta, the law that regulates social housing establishes the obligation of the financial entities to communicate to the CFVJA an inventory of all available public housing in the province; only about 20 of them have done this. The CFVJA has confirmed that there are at least eight financial entities in Andalucia, among which are some of the country’s main banks, which have not made this information available. Not putting housing which has been built with public money at the disposition of the public is a serious legal infraction and the financial entities could be fined between €30,000 and €120,000

THE picture below shows the view from my kitchen windows. Without consulting me, my neighbour has installed these solar panels on his terrace. I went to the town council, but A. Perhaps you should start with your Community of Owners. Has the Community authorised the installation of the solar panels? The panels clearly alter the exterior appearance of the building, just as enclosed terraces do, and so they should require the approval of the Community. Bring the situation to the attention of your Community President. Even if the panels are not attractive and even if they cut off your light and view, these unfortunately are not legal grounds to remove them.

YOU instinctively know when you are going to have a bad day at golf. It starts on the first tee when your opponent sets up his ball, takes his power stance in painful slow motion, waggles his butt and club head, stares down the fairway looking for an elephant, looks to make sure no myopic butterfly is watching, and then - maybe or maybe not - hits the ball. Your mind speaks to you in a thick Scottish brogue. “Now you know why those canny Scots invented the game. The only true relief being the 19th hole.” A friend from afar wanted a meaningful game of golf. He was a friend from not just across the pond, but one hailing from Nebraska, end of all known civilisation in the States (unless you are a prairie dog). The place is dead flat. Directions are given from tree to tree. Hell, even the snakes have moved out.

Nebraska’s peripheral excitement is limited to sunrise and sunset and any noise that occurs in between. But my friend managed to get on a plane for the first time in his life, fly to Spain, rent a car, and show up at my house. lined up his drive. He stared, produced the waggles, but kept glancing over his shoulder as if expecting a ‘Gotcha’ or something worse. After this occurrence repeated itself five consecutive times I had to interrupt. “Karl. Are you alright? You appear nervous.” “Well, I’m bothered.
What in the hell type of berries are on that tree over there?” “Karl, those are oranges. You’ve probably had them squeezed in your juice in the morning or maybe even eaten one.” Well, the game stopped right there and then. “Oranges. Really? I thought you had to dig them up like potatoes. And there they are right up there on a tree where anyone could take them. I’m gonna take a few, do you mind?” “Karl, let’s play golf. The tree will be there when you get back and you can take all you want. Rape and pillage every damn tree you can see - take them all back with you on the plane and hand them out.” “Well, that’s exactly what I’m gonna do.” So, he took off his shirt, buttoned it back up, tied the sleeves shut, and filled it up with oranges. “These are not gonna get away from me,” he proudly quipped. Do you know how long it takes to play 18 holes with a guy with a passive/aggressive golf waggle, a double psychotic stare, who finally does strike the ball, goes back and drags his shirt filled with oranges so the treasure of the event will never escape him?

GOGGLEBOX stars Steph Parker and Dom Parker could be about to land their own Channel 4 show. The B&B owners from Sandwich - known for being fond of a tipple while watching the television - are in talks about a potential chat show or another kind of new programme, Channel 4 has said. “We are currently exploring options with Steph and Dom for Channel 4, but nothing is finalised yet,” a spokesperson told Digital Spy. “We’ll announce as soon as we have something confirmed.” The Sun claims that Steph and Dom’s fellow Gogglebox stars are also in the running for their

Aiysha Hart, who appears as Ariadne, and Juliet Stevenson, who plays The Oracle, are among the old faces to return, while series two will also welcome new additions Vincent Regan as Dion and Amy Manson as Medea. Game of Thrones star Robert Pugh who appeared as Craster in the HBO hit and Broadchurch actor Peter De Jersey have been confirmed as guest stars for episode one of the new run. The show’s creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy said: “It’s wonderful to have everyone back in the studio together as we prepare to take Atlantis to
new places in series two. We have some exciting new additions joining our exceptional cast and some surprises up our sleeve that we can't wait to unleash on the Atlantis audience later this year.” The programme was renewed for a second series back in October, with BBC One controller Charlotte Moore branding the show an “original British drama with the kind of scale and ambition that we've come to expect from the cinema.” The show’s star Robert Emms recently named Matt Smith as his dream casting to play the mythical character of Icarus.

Amnesty solution for Spain’s homes problem ONCE again there has been much in the press about property problems in Spain. Some has even been positive with perhaps a solution to the legalisation issue on the horizon. A simple solution is an amnesty, with all houses built before a certain date to be made legal and all future planning to go through a specialist department and not the town halls. Local council officials and mayors of all parties are now in agreement that there needs to be an amendment to the Decree. Surely now, someone in the Junta de Andalucia will listen. The Junta must realise that if the houses were made legal this would boost the economy. Homes would be improved, giving work to the hundreds of builders who are currently unemployed. Houses would be put on the market for sale, which would not only bring in taxes but new furniture and cars would be purchased, giving a further boost to employment. People would no longer have to find legal fees and be constantly worried about what will happen next. They would be able to relax and enjoy life and spend more in local shops and restaurants. Town halls, instead of concentrating on legality issues, could instead concentrate their efforts on improving their towns and facilities, taking care of people and creating more employment. We are currently running a paper petition requesting an amnesty for all property built before 2008 and have gathered over 1,000 signatures locally. Legally speaking I READ recently in the Euro Weekly News that the Andalucian regional government plans to hire ‘cheap’ interpreters. Great news for the Junta’s coffers, but not so much for anyone involved in a legal process who requires an interpreter. Those currently providing the service in Malaga have university degrees in translation and interpreting and extensive knowledge of legal matters. Why should they be put out of work by mediocre counterparts willing to accept a pittance? Despite what many people may think, a knowledge of languages does not provide sufficient skill for translation or interpreting. Acquiring those skills takes time and effort. Junta officials are obviously not among those aware of the importance of accuracy in translation, especially in medical and legal matters. It is disgusting that Spain’s Criminal Procedure Act allows anyone with knowledge of languages to act as an interpreter, and also how many so-called translators/interpreters there are offering their services who are unqualified. People should stop and think of the consequences

Hard lines PERPLEXED is quite mistaken in attributing Knackebrod to Germany! This type of hard bread, made mostly of rye flour, is actually of Swedish origin. It has been baked in Sweden from around 500 AD. Roughly translated it means bread that is easy to crack. Originally considered as poor men’s food it is now considered as a healthy alternative with more dietary fibre. You will find Knackebrod in 85 per cent of Swedish homes, in Germany in 45 per cent and in
IF it’s paranoid to go on harping on about the same things week after week, without producing any evidence to support them then I’m afraid, dear Leapy, paranoid is what you are! Week after week we get told how criminals are getting off scot free, how Islamic bigots are ruling the roost, and Britain’s towns are overrun with immigrants. Yet all that Leapy is really saying is that a lot of people think this is so. He never makes any effort to find out whether they are right in thinking so or not. In fact, whenever any serious attempt is made to check on whether, for example, an unusual number of criminals are getting off, if immigrant numbers make any serious difference to other people’s work prospects, or most British Moslems are influenced by bigots, the result is always that the alleged problem has been enormously exaggerated. In any democratic country things can happen which we may not like, but to twist the law to make sure they cannot happen would mean removing safeguards we would sadly miss. Freedom of movement is something we all think we should enjoy. A fair trial is what we expect to have if we are accused. Leapy’s articles only make it harder for British people to live in the real world. He would do better to tell us how to adapt to a society with a lot of foreigners in it, and to learn a bit about how they live and why they have left their birthplaces and come to Britain. Don’t look! WHEN I drive into town I frequently see learner drivers waiting for their instructors. On most occasions they are having a nice cosy chat over a cup of coffee and brandy (methinks) in the bar next door. I say “methinks” as they come out, fags in hands and a bit doddery. It amazes me just how many of these instructors actually know how to drive themselves. They don’t even tell the learners to use their indicators and just pull out without using a rear view mirror. Oh, I forgot they don’t have to do that here. I was taught “mirror,

E’VE all heard about Spanish bureaucracy, haven’t we? Well, I’m encountering it at first hand here on the Costa del Sol, but my experiences could be mirrored anywhere in Spain. All I want to do is to remove a dead seven metre high cypress from my garden. Yes,
it’s a protected species which requires permission to be cut down (a neighbour who didn’t was fined €2,000) and, yes, it’s dead. Let me give you an idea of what’s been involved to date. Week One, off to the Ayuntamiento (town hall) to complete a request to remove said tree, providing numerous photos. A filing fee of €0.41 (!) needs to be paid but only at ‘specified’ banks! At the nearest approved one (it’s noon now), I’m informed this is only possible “between 8am and 10am.” The following day, I return and then it’s back to the Ayuntamiento, the receipt
confirming my €0.41 payment, in my sweaty hands. Week Four, someone from the Parks Department drops by, unannounced, to inspect (and photograph) the dead cypress. Week Seven, letter from the Ayuntamiento, delivered by hand, stating I need to pay a €300 refundable deposit to ensure I plant an ‘appropriate’ replacement. I pay the deposit and wait. Week 10, another letter from the Ayuntamiento, giving permission for both removal and replacement - carried out straightaway by my tree surgeon. Armed with photos of

the new fig tree, I complete a request for repayment of my deposit at the Ayuntamiento that’ll take “three to four weeks” tops. Week 14, another visit (unannounced) from the Parks Department to inspect and photograph the fig tree (taking enough photos to out-Gaga Lady Gaga). Week 18, still no repayment but it’ll arrive, I’m assured again, in “two weeks.” Week 24 and bottom line: almost six months now and counting. While it was Spain’s King Carlos I who invented the system of tying official documents with red tape in the 16th
century, it was his son, Felipe II, known as ‘El Rey Burócrata’ or ‘El Rey Papelero’ for his monomaniacal obsession with paperwork, who really took Spanish bureaucracy to another level. Every country’s got its share of bureaucracy, right? Here in Spain over the centuries, though, it’s been taken to a high art form. What, I wonder, are your experiences?

E-cigarettes - a ban too far? People can be seen relaxing with them in pubs and restaurants, even furtively puffing on planes and trains - but what are they

ICK JONES, aged 65, from La Marina (Alicante), believes that there is not enough research into e-cigarettes at the moment and what is in them. Despite this, he has used them to help stop smoking. He said: “It is about breaking the habit of smoking, but if you go on to e-cigarettes how do you break that habit? A lot of the time smoking is more the physical and social process of having something in your hand.” Whilst less harmful than normal cigarettes he does think they should be controlled: “They should be banned around children but I’m not sure if they could ever stop it really.” Benjamin and Barbara Crompton from Wales, on holiday in La Marina, agree it should be banned. Barbara, a care home worker, said: “I’m not a smoker, but I do notice a lot of these ecigarettes around and people are sat in bars and restaurants using them. I see smoke coming out and liquid inside so surely there is something being released

FOR politicians in the Opposition, no time is a good time. But is this a good time to be in power? Any government striving to keep the economy on the straight and narrow risks a punishment vote, as François Hollande discovered in the recent French municipal elections. It did not happen because the government is socialist or because Hollande is so unpopular. It happened because austerity makes people unhappy and the electorate wields the only weapon in its power: a punishment vote. Spain’s President Mariano Rajoy knows this as well as Hollande and is aware that he and the Partido Popular could suffer in the May 25 European elections. The unease is there to see because the government is trying to show a kindlier face. No-one mentions the unpopular Abortion reform bill and Treasury Minister Montoro has dismissed an increase in the IVA value added tax. Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz is also prepared to amend some points of his unloved Public Safety bill. And on May 26 they will discover whether or not this has paid off.

Wasted efforts NATIONAL High Court judge Santiago Pedraz is not going to drop the Couso case. Changes in the Judicial Power law curtail the right of a judge to investigate human rights’ violations outside Spain
but Pedraz still intends to prosecute the US soldiers who killed Jose Couso in Baghdad in April 2003. Pedraz argues that the Geneva Convention takes precedence over the Judicial Power law. Either way, he is unlikely to get very far by going ahead, because the US is not going to hand over Couso’s killers. Although the Spanish Government knows it is always a good idea to keep the US sweet, the law was changed to keep China sweeter still. Another judge, Ismael Moreno, ordered the arrest of former president Jian Zemin, expremier Li Peng and three other officials for human rights’ violations in Tibet. China’s threat of economic reprisals produced government panic and the change in the law. Human rights might be noble but it’s trade that fills the kitty.

LMERIA CITY’S Semana Santa (Holy Week or Easter) will see its ‘procesiones’ (processions) start on Sunday (April 13). Often described as a week full of ‘passion and devotion,’ whatever one’s faith, it should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Although for many years Almeria’s celebrations were not considered as important as other Andalucian provinces’ such as Malaga and particularly Sevilla, from the 70s they became one of the city’s most important events. Today there are thousands of people, both locals and visitors, who take to the streets to see or take part in the processions. As well the approximately 50 people carrying each of the ‘pasos,’ you will see marching bands, penitents dressed in pointed hoods which only show their eyes, local authorities and other members of the brotherhoods carrying the emblems. There are also penitents, mostly women, following the processions barefoot and dressed in black. One of the most spectacular components are the religious artifacts in precious metals and the elaborately embroidered cloaks and banners.

ALMERIA CELEBRATIONS: Approximately 50 people carry the ‘pasos.’ The colours used depend on each brotherhood. There are more than 20 brotherhoods in Almeria. One of the favourite images in Almeria is the ‘Virgen de los Angeles’ which is paraded on Palm Sunday, with a cloak which has no embroidery. Another is the ‘Prendimiento’ on Wednesday, carrying the figure of ‘Christ held captive’ from Almeria Cathedral. One of the most impressive processions is the ‘Perdon’ on Tuesday, carried in silence, apart from drums, and part of the way in darkness. Every time the figure of
Christ on the Cross passes a church a trumpet solo is played. Two special moments are held on Maundy Thursday, when the figure of Christ is carried by members of the Spanish legion based in Almeria and three brotherhoods meet in the Plaza Circular, where they pray and ‘dance.’ Another is the Via Crucis procession of the ‘Escucha’ brotherhood which leaves from Almeria Cathedral at 5am on Good Friday. Songs accompany the
figure all the way. On the evening of Good Friday, it is the turn of the ‘Santo Sepulcro’ which carries an image of Christ after being taken from the Cross and another of the Virgin. There is also the procession of ‘Soledad’ which includes two images, one of them the oldest in the city, the ‘Virgen de los ‘Dolores’. They are not accompanied by music and are possibly the most solemn of the week.

Cinderella law is a step too far
O
VER the years I’ve often come out against interference in our lives by the so-called Nanny State - but this most recent Cinderella law codswallop really does make my blood boil. Who are these faceless people using taxpayers’ money to come up with such pure unmitigated nonsense? Certainly not parents, that’s for sure. How dare they encourage youngsters to grass up their parents every time they think they’ve been hard done by, it’s bordering on Hitlerism. Under the proposed law parents could be jailed for ‘emotional cruelty.’ As a father of six I dread to think how many times I could have been reported by disgruntled little offspring not happy or having their noses put out by some disciplinary decision or another. The

If they were encouraged by these out of touch lunatics to report you to the authorities, at this point they would happily report you to the hangman. How are they going to enforce this law? Send a raiding squad of plod down to the family home to arrest some harassed parent making the family’s Sunday dinner after they’ve had an altercation because they

couldn’t get the children out of bed? Give us a break! Can you imagine the domestic chaos that would ensue with mum down the nick and the vegetables boiling over? No, what these people should be doing is sorting out their own departments. Instead of trying to sidetrack us all with these ridiculous red herrings
they should be investigating the monotonous regularity with which babies and toddlers are somehow ‘slipping through the net’ and dying under horrendous conditions. Yet another tot killed this week by a monster that local welfare workers somehow managed to let ‘slip under the radar’. Throwing rocks in
glasshouses comes to mind! The social services are in a disgraceful state. Most of its workers are unmarried and without families, simply because there is no time to do both. I always get the faint aroma of sour grapes when these lunatic directives emanate from their organisations. No, get your own houses in order before you start sending the SWAT teams into ours. Well my little stint in the Tenerife sunshine will soon be over. Once again I’ve had a great winter with some truly terrific folk. Thanks a bunch, everyone. See you all next year. SEPA means safe and efficient payments in Spain WHAT is SEPA? The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is making euro payments faster, safer and more efficient within the 34 EU countries. It enables customers to make cashless euro payments to anyone within the EU. What are the ways to pay using SEPA? 1. Exercising in warm water could reduce your blood pressure WARM water work outs could be a new cure for high blood pressure. Scientists have carried out a study on patients whose blood pressure remained high despite trying at least three different drugs. They made them exercise three times a week in water heated to 32 degrees centigrade and found the temperature of the water dilates the blood vessels, improving blood flow. So-called hot aqua-aerobics could be a remedy for thousands of patients who do not respond to medication. High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects one in five adults in the UK and is thought to be responsible for half of all heart attacks and strokes. Many patients can reduce blood pressure levels by eating less salt and taking more exercise, but

DIGGER: Man lost his life when cleaning out an irrigation pond.
Albox man dies trapped by a digger
A MAN, from Las Labores in Albox, died when half of his body was trapped under a digger. The man, 50, was cleaning a small irrigation pond on his pig farm. The cause of the accident is unknown but his upper body and arms were trapped by the digging mechanism.
All the evidence points towards the man having leant his upper body out of the cab when the accident happened. Despite the quick reaction of the medical services and the fire brigade they were unable to save his life. The Local Police and Guardia Civil were also in attendance.

More than €201,000 from PFEA THE PFEA, development and agricultural employment department, has invested more than €201,000 in Cantoria. Guillermo Casquet, councillor for the PFEA visited the village to see the two projects that have already begun. During his visit he was accompanied by the mayor of Cantoria, Gaspar Masegosa. The first project that Casquet visited was the ‘Pavements 2013’ works which include, but are not limited to, building the road to the cemetery, repairing the pavements on Juan Carlos 1 Street and repaving several of the local Almanzora roads. This project has a total budget of €160,000. Although he was not able to see the actual works being done he discussed, at length, the environmental project being undertaken by the council. This project consists of cleaning up the green areas around the municipality and has a budget of €48,449.
Albox Shopping Festival is well attended THE first ever Albox Shopping Festival took place with over 40 companies, from the Almanzora area, taking part in the event. The festival was organised by, among others, the Business Association of Albox-Valle del Almanzora and the Company Development Support Centre and was inaugurated by Adriana Valverde, territorial delegate for economy, science, employment and innovation. The event took place between Pio XII Avenue and Ramon y Cajal Street and was open to all. There were many activities, mainly aimed at the young, including a padel tournament and a three-a-side football tournament. The aim of the festival was to showcase local products as well as the area itself; there were free food and oil tastings, a competition to design the logo for next year’s festival and a free donkey ride around the village.

Helping to keep track HELLO and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. I know that many of you, myself included, have android devices (phones, tablets, etc) and that an organiser would be extremely useful (it is invaluable to me - not enough hours in the day :-). Well today, I have the pleasure of letting you know of an app (horrible contraction!) that will work wonders. When I was looking for a calendar that would allow me to access my online calendar but also allow me to modify or add events to it, even when I was offline, I didn’t hold out a lot of hope. The calendar had to fulfil four simple criteria: 1. It had to work offline (hold all my dates, time, etc. while not connected to the internet); 2. It had to be able to connect to both my outlook.com and gmail calendars; 3. It didn’t need a rocket scientist to understand it

First you select the add icon which brings up a simple box for your information. From here you only need to make changes to your email provider (gmail/outlook), the time and date, select save and you’re done. America Avenue The PP in Albox has petitioned the council to repair all the pot holes on Avenida America. The avenue, one of the principal arteries of the area, has suffered subsidence and due to lack of maintenance, has many pot holes. Cars and pedestrians alike are having problems with the poor state of the road. The PP went on to denounce the general lack of maintenance of the roads in the municipality.

From homes, gardens and lifestyle to homely recipes THE first edition of our book Your Garden in Spain had the subtitle ‘Practical ideas for gardens that suit your Spanish lifestyle’ and was a thick 335 page book that included large sections on the growing of fruit and vegetables as well as a comprehensive coverage of growing flowering plants and trees plus garden design and maintenance. We were matching the needs of our publishers for a large book to replace a long standing but outdated book titled ‘Gardening in Spain.’ The book sold well but the original publishers sold out and the new owners indicated that three smaller books ‘Your Garden in Spain - From Planning to planting and maintenance’ plus ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’ and ‘Growing healthy Vegetables’ would better meet their needs. So it was back to the drawing board/computer and a lost summer but no royalty advance, being Spain. But one thing we did was to include our favourite Spanish recipes for cooking fruit and vegetable dishes to hold the books above competitors. But frustratingly to no avail as just before publication the recipes were cut out to save costs. However, the cut info was not lost and by the autumn a new book should be published including the homely recipes. The original ‘Your Garden in Spain’ was launched at the Viva España exhibition at Olympia in London where we fought to be heard when giving talks

Happy campers THE Dames in Turre met for their monthly meeting on Monday March 31. Chairman Soo Wallace opened the meeting with ‘morning campers’ as the speaker was Gerry Hughes, a former Redcoat at Butlin’s in Filey. “Hi-de-hi” was his opening phrase and from there on he had everyone in fits of laughter, telling of his experiences during his three seasons at Butlin’s. His slide show brought back many happy memories to anyone who had had a Butlin’s holiday during their earlier years and he played a few ditty tunes like Penny on the Drum. To pay homage to the Redcoat tradition, many members came along dressed in something red.

Sir Malcolm Campbell’s family give Rolls-Royce their seal of approval DONALD and Joe Wales, the grandson and great grandson of pioneer record-breaker Sir Malcolm Campbell, have given their seal of approval to the first of 35 Bespoke Phantom Drophead Coupé Waterspeed Collection cars at the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex. Built to commemorate Campbell’s seminal act of British daring and endeavour, this latest creation by the marque’s Bespoke department takes inspiration from the Bluebird craft in which the records were set. A specially created exterior finish named Maggiore Blue takes its name from the lake on the SwissItalian border where Campbell broke the United States’ five year strangle-hold on the waterspeed records in 1937. This very special collection also pays homage to a period when the Rolls-Royce R engine held speed records on land, water and in the air. Porsche to replace 911 GT3 engines S
PORTS car manufacturer Porsche will be replacing the engines of all 911 GT3 vehicles of model year 2014. This is the corrective action derived from intensive internal analyses that were initiated in response to two engine fires. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that engine damage resulted from a loosened screw joint on the connecting rod. The loose connecting rod damaged the crankcase, which in both cases led to leakage of oil which then ignited. After becoming aware of the two accident cases, Porsche promptly took action to avoid any risk to customers by advising them to cease using the affected 785 vehicles until further notice and have them
picked up by a Porsche Centre. Now, engines with optimised screw fittings will be used in all Porsche 911 GT3 vehicles of model year 2014 including in those that have not been delivered yet. The relevant Porsche Centres are in direct communication with customers worldwide to discuss the further course of action. Porsche points out that no other 911 models or other model series are affected by this action.

More control on secondary roads THE DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) is to increase the amount of traffic controls on secondary roads after a recent rise in accidents. Since March 1 there have been five accidents, with three deaths in each, on secondary roads prompting this increase in traffic control by the DGT. Since the beginning of the year there have been 219 deaths on the roads in Spain, 82 per cent of these were on secondary roads.

The DGT is going to be paying particular attention to any infractions involving an excess of speed or illegal overtaking; they are also proposing new legislation for heavy vehicles, anything over 7,500 kilos, as many of these are involved in accidents. There are over 140,000 kilometres of secondary roads with no central reservation in Spain and these are responsible for around 78 per cent of all fatal accidents and are considered the most dangerous. In 2012 there were 26,698 accidents on secondary roads in which 1,144 people died and another 39.979 were injured and it is with this in mind that the DGT wants to increase people’s awareness of the dangers of these roads.

CRT racing weekend at Albacete race circuit IT was a full house at Albacete for the opening races in the Spanish National Championships Racing Calendar. The CRT Racing Team led by David Slader on his BMW S1000RR lined up on the grid on Sunday. The weather was sunny but with cold winds, really quite good conditions. David, known to many in Spain from his business Broadband Costa Blanca, was quick off the line and within two laps was up to fifth place having started ninth out of a field of 27. This was David’s first race in six years and taking into account his lack of track time on a new bike and level of fitness, the final results of the race were impressive. David came first in his class Motodes Open 1000cc and sixth overall in the General Manchego/Valenciano Extreme 1000cc. David was racing on Dunlop

At the next outing in May, David will be on slicks also and we all expect he will achieve a podium. Windy at the Desert Springs DESPITE all weather forecasts to the contrary very strong winds continued to buffet this part of Spain on Friday April 4, and the effect on the scores returned by Forum Golf Society’s players contesting an individual stableford at Desert Springs were testament to this, as for the first time in the Society’s history not one single player managed to get to 30 points! Three people did, however, manage to accumulate 29 points, with Peter Harrington making it two wins in a row at Desert Springs, beating Adrian Lawrence (second) and Mike Duckham (third) on countback. Derek Manning was fourth with 26 points, the same as fifth placed Andy Birch and one better than Reno Palagano in sixth. Richard Swaine, Adrian Lawrence and Kevin Smith won nearest the pin prizes, with Maurice Jamieson managing to keep it on the fairway to take the longest drive on the tenth hole.

THIS WEEK’S SPORT, and there’s plenty of it, again. Last night, Manchester United, 1-1 v Bayern Munich and Barcelona, 1-1 v Atletico Madrid, played the second legs of their Champions League quarter-finals. Chelsea (1-3 down) v Paris St Germain and Real Madrid (leading 3-0) against Borussia Dortmund completed their return games on Tuesday. There has already been a full programme of Championship games, with four of the top six all playing away. Today sees the start of the US Masters in Augusta, while tonight there are four 2nd leg quarter-final Europa League matches. Wembley is the venue for both FA Cup semifinals - Arsenal-Wigan (Saturday) and Hull City-Sheffield United (Sunday). Also on Sunday, it’s the big one - Liverpool v Manchester City at Anfield while Swansea meet Chelsea and Fulham take on Norwich in other crucial PL games... 30,000 runners will compete in the London Marathon... and the second MotoGP of 2014 takes place in Austin, Texas.
SOCCER ROUND-UP It’s still all to play for in the Premiership after the top three all won. Leaders Liverpool triumphed 21 at West Ham with two Steven Gerrard penalties, one controversial, their ninth straight win. Chelsea beat Stoke 3-0 and Manchester City defeated Southampton 4-1. In the race for fourth place, Everton beat Arsenal 3-0 while Manchester United clattered Newcastle 4-0. The 160th university boat race was won easily by Oxford after unlucky Cambridge had an oarsman fall out of his seat! Stuart Pearce will take over as manager of his former club Nottingham Forest in May. Granada midfielder Danny Benitez - on loan from Udinese - has tested positive for cocaine and faces a lengthy ban and hefty fine. GERRARD: Scored two penalties.

An eagle for Leif WEDNESDAY April 2 Cortijo Grande had two divisions. Once again a good turnout. Leif Myrre scored a terrific eagle on the par five, 17th. In the first division John Geaves (39), won with John Wardley (34) second and Mike Picken (33) third. In division two Chris Linforth (34) beat Franz Dierden (34) and Vincent Sheridan (34). On Sunday there was another win for John Geaves (66) in the Monthly Medal. Second was John Wardley (67) and third David Hardy (69). Sunshine for 19th Hole golf A BEAUTIFUL morning found the 19th Hole Golf Society queuing up behind the influx of Scandinavians to play an Individual Stableford competition at Valle del Este. The course is beginning to look better after several ‘haircutting’ operations and with a bit more tidying will look superb, but as many of our players found, it is still a tricky course to master, especially as the wind freshened. As the afternoon went on the wind played more and more part in bringing down even the most experienced players, clearly shown by the far from impressive 29 from Peter Easthope taking 1st place. Second was Syd Walker (28) and third was Terry Caddick (27). The 19th hole G/S is now arranging weekly games at various courses in the area, our home course, which we play fortnightly, is Aguilon. The 1974 FIFA World Cup by Tony Matthews TENTH staging of the World Cup was held in West Germany from June 13 to July 7. The tournament marked the first time that the current trophy, created by the Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, was awarded. The previous prize, the Jules Rimet Trophy, had been won for the third time by Brazil in 1970 and awarded permanently to that country.
West Germany was chosen as the host nation in London on July 6, 1966. Sixteen countries took part and they were once again divided into four groups of four with the top two progressing through to the quarter-finals. Both East and West Germany qualified from Group 1; Yugoslavia and Brazil won through from Group 2; Holland and Sweden finished first and second in Group 3 and Argentina and Poland moved into the last eight from Group 4. There was no knockout format at this stage, as the quarterfinalists were split into two groups of four, with the winners of each
