Parents wait to lay son to rest THE parents of Francis Brennan, whose body was found washed up on the beach at La Zenia, Orihuela Costa, have said they just want to lay him to rest. Carl and Janet Brennan from Liverpool, previously spoke to Euro Weekly News pleading

ALTEA Town Hall is still confident that local business-owners will accept its Open Shopping Centre plans. The council wants to make Altea’s centre “welcoming, attractive and agreeable,” said Mayor Miguel Ortiz, who hopes to count on the co-operation of as many local businesses as possible. Eliminating parking spaces in Avenida Jaime I, Calle Raspall, the Plaza de los Deportes and Avenida de la Comunidad Valenciana has been a principal criticism of
the Open Shopping venture from the outset. Plans will include short-term parking for those making rapid purchases with angled parking also available, Ortiz has assured local owners. There would also be a 3.5-metre lane for slow traffic and more room for pedestrians, he said. Business-owners still have time to let the town hall hear their suggestions and opinions, Ortiz told them, to enable it to arrive at a final decision regarding the advisability of going ahead with the project.

Electro event returns again DOUBTS have been dispelled and Benidorm’s 2014 Electrobeach festival is going ahead. It will be held on August 1 and 2 with the backing of Benidorm Town Hall and the first tickets have already been sold. Performers at the event, which is Spain’s principal electronic music festival, will be announced shortly. Electrobeach was held at the Terra Mitica car park for the last three years but the choice was unpopular with guests at two nearby luxury hotels. The noise generated exceeded the legal limit, claimed the
management of both hotels who later started legal proceedings against the regional government for approving the licence. These problems have been ironed out, said Benidorm Town Hall and negotiations are under way to find another venue. It is likely that the festival will be held in Benidorm’s industrial area, revealed Fiestas councillor Conrado Hernandez. Exceptional technical measures would be introduced to ensure that residents in the area are not affected by noise, Hernandez said.

IFTY-EIGHT per cent of Spaniards plan to take a trip over Easter, 5 per cent more than last year. A survey carried out by travel site TripAdvisor reveals that almost 70 per cent will stay in Spain and that the favourite destination over Easter is Andalucia, followed by Cataluña, Castilla y Leon and Valencia. Forty-eight per cent say that they seek a cultural holiday, as opposed to 21 per cent who want to spend their free time on the beach. Fiftyfour per cent will be travelling more than 500 kilometres to their destination, and 60 per cent will go by car. Fifty-two per cent have been planning their Easter holidays for several months, and while 44 per cent have the same budget as last year, 21 per cent intend to spend more and 15 per cent will be tightening their purse strings. Hard-up drivers avoid fines LOCAL POLICE fines in San Vicente del Raspeig fell by 29 per cent last year. A total of 2,192 drivers were booked, compared with 3,086 in 2012. Offences detected by radar
traps dropped by half, said town hall sources. The municipal tow truck also did 36 per cent less business, falling from 1,455 in 2012 to just 930 last year even though
officers worked 13 per cent more shifts. “Drivers are increasingly aware of the need to respect traffic regulations,” said San Vicente’s Public Safety Councillor Victor
Lopez. It was also possible the economic situation had a bearing on the lower figures, Lopez admitted, as people were using their vehicles less often and took greater care to avoid fines.

SEVENTY Spanish paintings from private art collections are currently on show in Alicante City. Visiting the exhibition L’Art del Col.leccionista is like touring the history of Spanish art between 1950 and 2000, said Felipe Garin, director of the Valencia region’s consortium of museums. The exhibition at the Lonja features works by Miro, Tapies, Sempere, Jose Guerrero, Saura, Perez Villalta, Millares, Luis
Gordillo, Guinovart, Plensa and the sculptor Julio González, All are modern Spanish artists and the works were acquired by 10 prominent Alicante collectors during the second half of the 20th century. “Private collections are a reflection of the economic strength of the city where their owners live,” Garin said. The exhibition opened earlier this month and remains at the Lonja until May 18. Entrance is free.

Hospital time wasters SEVEN per cent of Elche outpatients failed to turn up for specialists’ appointments last year. The accumulation of missed slots meant that several hours of the specialists’ time was wasted even though many have long waiting lists, according to the latest figures from the Hospital del Vinalopo. Of 464,319 appointments made for outpatients 33,133 failed to turn up without letting the hospital know beforehand. Elche’s General Hospital reported similar statistics for 2013, with 237,895 appointments which 25,895 people did not bother to keep. In contrast, however, the hospital attended 17,225 patients without prior appointments.

Solution in sight for local landmark FOR Benissa, the Salve Rock is a symbol of its past. For centuries until the 1950s Benissa men set off on foot to work in Valencia’s La Ribera, first to plant rice and later to harvest it. The Salve Rock was the last point where they could see the town and they would say a last prayer for their families and their own safe return. The work was hard and many either did not make the journey back or returned in ill health. The Salve Rock, still of great sentimental value to Benissa, was removed when the AP-7 motorway was built. It was re-sited in a school playground in Senija where the Rock is an equally important landmark for villagers, as its men also made the annual journeys to La Ribera. Since its removal the Salve Rock has been a source of irritation

Approximately 150 residents are petitioning for a “dogs allowed” beach and an online petition has collected another 161 signatures. The petition’s organiser Monika Klostermann recently met Beaches Councillor Jaime Selles to discuss the possibility. The proposal was “coherent and viable,” commented Selles, who promised to study it “carefully.” First it would be necessary to ensure that all residents were prepared to agree to the presence of dogs on the beach, Selles said.

Rare Iberian shield found in La Vila FRAGMENTS excavated at Villajoyosa’s Poble Nou archaeological site have been identified as part of an Iberian shield. Their curved decorative lines led experts to suspect that the minute fragments were part of a weapon, but their full significance emerged only during
restoration. Iberian shields were made of wood with a raised metal boss in the centre and a decorated metal rim. The now piecedtogether fragments are clearly part of one of these rims of which there are only 13 known examples, said Fernando Quesada, a leading expert in Iberian weaponry. It was common to bury an Iberian’s arms with him and other grave gifts found in the same burial place included a Greek perfume bottle, two drinking cups and bronze tweezers.

so much on an “irrelevant activity” during an economic crisis with thousands out of work and cutbacks in social welfare and health was “an insult,” declared EU councillor Cesar Vilar. It also displayed “unacceptable
insensitivity,” the councillor said. The town hall allocated €400,000 for local fiestas, Vilar continued, but designated only €9,000 to the Employment Plan subscribed to by the Generalitat, the provincial Diputacion and the town hall.

Macho men get made up for charity fundraiser THE Guardian Angels charity is holding a fundraising event in Javea on April 27. It will have an element of fun because some very macho men will be sponsored to have their faces made up. “Yes, you heard me right,” said Guardian Angels committee member Tamsin German. “We have lots of lovely men who are volunteering to have their make-up
done in the name of charity.” The event starts at 1pm in Digby’s Bar in Javea Park with huge amounts of fun promised as the brave men have some “slap” put on by Tamsin or their friends as those wishing to put on the make-up will be able to pay for the privilege. The funds raised will go to Guardian Angels, with a 30 per cent donation for Cancer Care. “We plan to make it fabulous fun for all involved and for those who want to pop along and watch,” Tamin promised.

UNESCO bid
DENIA aspires to become a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. The town hall and hoteliers’ and restaurateurs’ association AEHTMA have joined forces in putting it forward as a candidate. Recognition by UNESCO would make Denia a principal reference for the Mediterranean diet and a gastronomic beacon, said Denia’s Tourism Councillor Pepa Font. Denia’s application was prepared by experts and is backed by a technical committee from Alicante University, Elche’s Miguel Hernandez University, the Polytechnic University of Valencia and UNED, Spain’s
Open University. The UNESCO submission highlights four different areas, starting with the creation of a Gastronomic Observatory to link members of UNESCO’s Gastronomy network. Denia is presented as a future training centre for the gastronomic sector and a defender of the Mediterranean diet with special emphasis on fish and seafood. Finally the town plans to organise food-orientated events while producing gastronomic publications and promotions. “This is a project by and for us all,” said Denia mayor Ana Kringe.
CALPE is again organising its Easter sand sculpture competition. Participants start work on April 15 and will have two days to complete their entries at the allotted sites. The sculptures measuring approximately nine square metres must be entirely handmade, using only buckets, spades and rakes. Contestants may also touch up their work in the following days where necessary, the town hall’s Tourism department explained. The number of entrants is limited to 10 and the six sought-after prizes consist of authorisation to create sand sculptures throughout the summer. The winner scoring the most points gets the pick of the six beach sites designated by the town hall, and so on down the list.

Good year for prize cherries THE first quarter of 2014 was the driest since records began in 1858. Tourists from the waterlogged UK and other parts of northern Europe welcomed the lack of rain but drought is doing few favours for Costa Blanca agriculture. Inland growers who produce the protected denomination of origin (DO) Montaña de Alicante cherries are also hoping for rain. The blossom is out around Alcoy, El Comtat, Castalla, Vinalopo and the inland Marina Alta area and growers predict an 8million kilo crop that should be the best for 15 years. This season’s conditions have been ideal so far apart from the lack of rain, they said. What they do not want are last year’s storms and torrential rain that wiped out 40 per cent of the crop. “Cherries are sensitive, especially at harvest time,” said Marcos Simon, president of the DO Montaña de Alicante growers association.

MEP calls for oil prospecting ban
OIL-FREE: Javea residents petitioning against oil prospecting. DESPITE other differences, Marina Alta towns are united in opposing oil exploration in the Gulf of Valencia. During a recent visit to Javea, MEP Andres Perello said that the Spanish government could easily settle the debate. Member states have the last word regarding gas or oil prospections within their own borders or territorial waters: “Europe would not say a word,” Perello predicted. The MEP called on the national government to ban explorations. “They will say that I’m a radical but we cannot allow a way of life to disappear,” he said. During his recent visit

Both men agreed that the Cairns Energy project was a threat to the fishing, tourism and restaurant industry. Valencia leads foreign home sales THE Valencian Community has established itself as the leading autonomy in Spain for foreign home sales in the last quarter of 2013, with 33.6 per cent of the national total and 13,436 transactions. Of these 13,436 housing transactions in the Valencia Region in the fourth
quarter of last year, a total of 4,281 (31 per cent) were acquired by foreign residents in Spain, with a total of 424 non-resident foreigners. Eighty-three per cent of these sales were in Alicante Province. Andalucia had the second highest foreign property sales with 19.9 per cent.

Garden guru and antiques expert wow the audiences THE Homes Gardens & Lifestyle Show at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe attracted over 3,500 people during the two day event. Television personalities Charlie Dimmock, of Ground Force fame and antiques expert Mark Stacey were the stars of the show. As Mark was busy valuing antiques well after the show closed on both days, Charlie was happily engaging visitors and exhibitors with her natural charm and wit. Speaking to the Euro Weekly News she said it was great to be back in Spain after being a guest at the show in San Miguel de Salinas in 2012. Last year her Ground Force colleague Tommy Walsh was present. He even spoke of his desire for a Ground Force

demos and talks and an art gallery with 94 paintings submitted to the competition helping to raise €470 for MABS cancer charity. 3 arrested for laundering drug money TWO people in Murcia and one in Alicante have been arrested for laundering drug money and terrorism. They are amongst 18 people to have been arrested in the nationwide
‘Nur Blanca’ operation for being part of an organisation that used a funds transfer system. The cash was illegally obtained through drugs sales and financing terrorism and
extended to several Arab countries. Property searches recovered over €500,000, 33 vehicles, 55 telephones and various banking accounts and electronic equipment.

Glittering gala just days away FINAL preparations are in full swing for Saturday’s Bay Radio Charity Gala Awards. The event at Denia’s Marriott La Sella hotel is a sell-out as charities are recognised and honoured. Managing Director of Bay Radio, Graham Barber, told the Euro Weekly News (EWN) that it is the station’s way of saying thank you to the army of unsung heroes; local volunteers who give their time freely to help others: “Having launched nine years ago, the station does hundreds of shout-outs for charities and had been thinking about hosting an event to thank and honour the volunteers for some time. “Bay Radio is a community station and we have always supported charity. Altea ups emergency assistance ALTEA has increased the amount of emergency aid available by 26.8 per cent to €85,000. Councillor for Social Services, Gregorio Alvada, said the money will be used for residents in urgent need of assistance and that the funds would help “to meet their most basic needs.” Alvada added that the council was the first, in 2013, to launch aid for those people at risk of eviction from their homes.

Holiday season starts here THE tourism sector is waiting in anticipation for the season boost as Monday marks the start of Easter week. Many small hotels and establishments are reporting that they are increasing their work force by 15-20 per cent for Easter to deal with the expected extra people. But that is not the case everywhere with some retaining their staff throughout the year. Jose Maria Caballe, President of the Servigroup chain, said: “I try to keep operating all equipment and distribute holiday all year to have enough staff to work 365 days.” This Easter, the Costa Blanca offers
55,000 hotel rooms to tourists, plus another 20,000 regulated apartments and 15,000 camping places. Benidorm hotels are forecast to reach between 90-100 per cent occupancy as next weekend approaches. As for prices, although rates are still frozen for three years, many hoteliers have improved their operating costs and stopped working directly with tour operators, allowing savings to be made. Javier Garcia, Vice President of hotel chain Magic Costa Blanca, said: “We expect a very good Easter and often, when Easter is good, the summer is good.”

This week we meet youth champion Lauren Staton…. Association (EKA) When her son turned 16, he wanted to continue at
school studying acting but the A-level was not readily available: “I found a teacher to do the course and two other children were interested, which EKA funded, enabling my son to get his A-Level.” EKA was born and since then she has been working on realising the potential of youngsters ever since and helping fund their ambitions. Lauren said: “Grades nowadays are not instant passports for success; it is about experience and knowledge also, so it is my job to seek out these opportunities and arrange workshops, seminars and activities in a range of interests.” For Lauren it is all about seeking out an interest and helping a child to pursue it

Food company changed expiry dates THREE members of a family running a food business in Palma de Mallorca were arrested by National Police for distributing products which had passed their expiry date. The investigation began when police were informed the business could be violating workers’ rights. This revealed that management and staff were falsifying expiry dates on products which were distributed to schools and hospitals amongst other places, as well as the fact that foods were being stored in warehouses with no
proper hygiene conditions and delivery vehicles were not refrigerated. The company distributed preserved vegetables, fish, pasta, jams and other products. The premises, located on Son Castello Industrial Estate, were raided and police found blank labels, dissolvent to erase expiry dates, products which had been tampered with, computer equipment and various documents. They have since been closed. Five Spanish workers have also been charged and claim that they
agreed to tamper with the dates for fear of losing their jobs. They also say they were forced to work overtime with no extra pay, made to drive overloaded lorries and their wages docked if any of the products were ruined. The three detainees have been charged with document falsification and crimes against public health and workers’ rights.
Three months for dog killer A MAN who killed a dog by throwing it out of a sixth-floor window in Caceres, Extremadura, has been sentenced to three months in prison. The events took place in June 2013, when the 24-year-old claimed that a friend of his girlfriend’s came to his house with the dog and began arguing with her. At one point he said he grabbed the 10month-old French bulldog and threw it out of the window. It died when it hit the pavement and he fled the house but was arrested soon afterwards. He will also have to pay the owner €2,700 in compensation and the legal costs, and has been banned from any profession involving animals for one year. The accuser, El Refugio animal shelter, was asking for a year in prison for animal abuse.

Brit bride-to-be is in fight on flight to Spain A BRIDE-TO-BE got into a fight with one of her bridesmaids on a flight to Spain. The bridesmaid, Katrina Hanafin, 33, has made an official complaint to police over the attack by bride-to-be Kelly Lloyd, 30, during the henweekend trip. The mid-air scrap took place on a flight from Manchester to Barcelona on Thursday. The group were on their way to Lloret de Mar. Reportedly, Miss Lloyd has been captured on CCTV throwing punches. Mother-of-three Miss Hanafin, who is scared of flying and had taken a diazepam before the flight, said that she has now pulled out of the wedding. Miss Hanafin said that she was left covered with cuts and bruises following the attack at 30,000 ft and had to go to A&E.
She said. “I was sat down the whole of the time and was attacked by them. I’m not sure what even led to fight on the plane. “There were crossed words, along the lines of [Kelly] saying nobody wants to sit with me and the next thing I knew I was being punched from behind on the side of my head. “I was sat in the middle of two girls in a row of three so I couldn’t do anything. “All I could do was curl up in a ball while I was rained blows over my face, arms, shoulders and legs and my hair pulled, as I tried to cover myself. “After that I asked the cabin crew to move me. “I didn’t want to be a part of the hen party after that.” Miss Hanafin booked a flight back to the UK as soon as she arrived in Barcelona.

Two British women drown TWO British women have drowned in Tenerife while trying to rescue their children after they were swept away by a wave at the beach. The holidaymakers,
Barathe Ravikumar, 39, and Uma Ramalingam, 42, were pronounced dead at the scene. The incident happened at the Playa Paraiso resort in the south west of
the island, which is about five miles west of the popular Playa de las Americas complex. The group, believed to be from the same extended family, are
understood to have been washed out to sea after being knocked from a rock by a large wave at about 6pm on Sunday. Onlookers rushed to help, managing to
pull both children and two of the women back to the beach. However, one of the women could not be revived. Onlookers called emergency services and
shortly after 6pm a rescue helicopter was scrambled, with ambulances and police being sent immediately to the scene. A rescue helicopter reached a third woman, who had been swept further out to sea, but she too could not be revived. The youngest child was treated for hypothermia, while the 14-year-old was treated for minor bruising at the scene. One of the women, Ms Ramalingam, was a consultant obstetrician from Altrincham in Cheshire. She had worked in a number of hospitals across the Pennine Acute Hospital Trust catchment area, including Royal Oldham Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital.

Most wanted woman found THE only woman who was on the list of Spain’s 10 most wanted criminals, has said she returned to Paraguay because she had been cleared of charges. Maria Luisa Espinola, 32,
said on the radio from Asuncion, that her Venezuelan former partner was guilty of the murder of a woman of the same nationality, but that she had returned to Paraguay
in March last year with her daughter with the permission of the Spanish authorities. He is currently in prison. She said that both she and the victim, Yulmer Josefina Sifontes de Paredes, were pregnant and that her partner had introduced her to the woman in a bar, along with several men, one of whom claimed to be her boyfriend. She said they then went to the couple’s house to a party, where her former partner allegedly forced the victim to drink alcohol. Espinola claims she went to bed and that when he woke her the next day, he showed her the body on the terrace and threatened her with a gun, forcing her to help him dump it. They then went to a bridge from which they threw the body. She said her partner

WO stories that hit the UK national press sum up the differing images of the Brit
abroad. One summed up the boozy tourist after sun and sangria and a ‘good time’ at all costs that brings a shudder down many an expatriate’s spine. The other was a family tragedy that showed two mums making the ultimate sacrifice to save their beloved children from the sea. In one, a bride-to-be didn’t even make it as far as Spain for her hen party before getting into trouble. She ended up fighting with one of her bridesmaids on the flight over. That showed a lack of respect not just for her, now presumably exfriend, but also a total disregard for fellow passengers. A selfish unwillingness to recognise the upset,
distress and even fear they may have suffered as she pursued her own agenda. On the other hand, two British mothers drowned as they tried to rescue their children from the sea off a Tenerife beach. The two women, believed to be from the same extended family, were pulled from the water but could not be revived. The children survived the ordeal. So on one hand we have a selfish troublemaker, on the other two women who were totally selfless to the extent of losing their lives. Let us hope that the bride-to-be learns some humility, and regard for other people. Should she have children maybe she will understand why some people are willing to give up their lives for the people they love.

Instead of the expected 641 civil service posts the offer has been raised to 950, announced Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro. The selection process has been reformed, he confirmed, with experience taken into greater account and equal opportunities for women. Montoro’s announcement came during the presentation of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report on Public Administration reform in Spain. Approximately 238 of the new employees will go to the government’s tax collecting agency AEAT to boost the number of
employees assigned to tracking down fiscal fraud. A further 210 will be assigned to local administrations as town hall auditors and a ‘significant’ number will fill vacancies within national administrative bodies. While the creation of 950 new jobs is encouraging this does little to balance the 374,000 posts lost in public administration over the last two years, said the UGT trade union. The unions were irritated by Montoro’s announcement, sources claimed, as they were already in conversations with the government regarding the new jobs. The announcement was made before talks concluded, they complained.

generates its own income and is a money-maker. In 2012, the last year with available figures, the regulator made a profit of €7.4 million, 70 per cent of which went into government coffers. This year new regulations controlling levies come into force and the CNMV is expected to earn €46.7 million, Rodriguez revealed at a recent forum.

Cuts affect Spaniards abroad STEPS taken by Germany and Belgium to protect their benefits system are affecting Spanish immigrants. The measures were introduced to stem the flood of Romanian and Bulgarian immigrants once restrictions were lifted last January, but there are currently 6,592 Spanish immigrant workers in Germany who are now jobless. Finding work is less easy than it looks, said Silvia Nuñez , who has a degree in English and recently returned to Spain. “It depends on your profession and if your German is good.” Belgium is already cutting benefits to immigrants it considers to be a drain on the system. Last year it stopped benefits to 2,712 EU citizens of whom 323 were Spanish. After Romanians and Bulgarians they are the most-affected by the country’s new regulations.

Tax agency digs for fraud SPAIN’S tax collection body, the AEAT agency is planning a two-pronged attack. Now that tax declarations are due, the agency will home in on online commerce which now moves €10.6 billion a year, said AEAT’s director general Santiago Menendez. The agency has also been authorised to check the computers of small and medium businesses for ‘Caja B’ black money camouflaged by double accounting. E-commerce can look forward to ‘far-reaching control’ with the participation of AEAT’s crack group Onif, renowned for locating fiscal fraud, promised the authority’s director general Santiago Menendez. “AEAT is facing new forms of fraud because the internet facilitates totally submerged activities,” claims the text of the agency’s control programme. “Others appear to be foreign but are in fact Spanish
ONLINE COMMERCE: Computers to be checked. companies using the internet to avoid their tax obligations.” The agency will use information circulating on the internet to piece together information on taxpayers to determine whether or not they are involved in undeclared commercial activities. Tax inspectors will monitor how many visits to a web page result in sales, Menendez explained. They will also check
whether tax is paid on earnings from advertisers who pay to appear on websites. Manufacturers who sell their products on the internet will come under scrutiny to ensure that they pay ‘adequate’ tax in Spain, the director general revealed.
Specialist AEAT staff will also examine computers to detect possible manipulation of accounts sheets, double accounting or partial concealment of a company’s activities. Yet more inspectors will visit firms and shops to check that no payments of more than €2,500 have been received in cash. And, as always, AEAT’s hitmen and women will continue to home in on taxpayers whose ‘external signs of wealth’ do not correspond to their tax declarations or declarations of personal assets.

first thing he did was ask for a list of lost clients. He discovered most had left due to poor service. By informing them of the change of ownership and addressing their concerns he recovered most of them. Leave several business cards in your customer’s home or premises where they can be seen. Respectfully ask your customer to recommend you. Ask if they have friends or family who may be interested in your service. The most important rule of all: Always thank your client for their custom. By following these basic rules you can double, even treble your turnover without it adversely affecting your outgoings.

Energy poor Spain A GROWING number of energy-poor Spaniards cannot maintain their homes at an adequate temperature. A household is classed as energy or fuel poor when a family cannot meet the cost of basic energy needs or when it must allocate an excessive proportion of the family income to pay its energy bills. People with energy problems have increased by 50 per cent since 2008, found ‘Fuel poverty in Spain,’ a study by Spain’s Association of Environmental Sciences (ACA). The preliminary results suggest that the most significant increase in energy poverty occurred
between 2010 and 2012. The study revealed that 10 per cent of Spanish households - approximately 4 million people - are now energy poor, with one out of every three families affected by unemployment experiencing fuel poverty. Those on pensions or living in rural and underpopulated areas are also at risk. Energy poverty is a contributing factor to between 2,300 and 9,300 premature deaths in Spain each year. Energy-efficient buildings, fighting climate change and reducing the European Union’s energy dependence are amongst solutions to the problem.

FOR those fortunate enough to be employed, a salary thankfully lands in the bank account each month, but despite concerns about bills, mortgage payments and future costs, most people or households are not very good at keeping track of this money. A new report hailing from the US has revealed that when it comes to being smart about money and making sure to tie up loose financial ends, many adults are failing miserably. And the same rings true for grown-ups all over the world. Thirty four per cent of
those surveyed admitted that they constantly carry month-to-month credit card debt. It’s so easy to just stick a cost on your credit card and tell yourself that you’ll pay it off at the end of the month. But in reality other costs always creep up and all that good intention to pay off credit card debt ultimately gets postponed. Which tragically for your savings results in paying lots of hard earned money purely on interest. But you’re not alone making these financial mistakes, almost half of those questioned would grade themselves a ‘C’ or lower when it comes to financial know-how, while 61 per cent of adults don’t even have a budget.
Public housing is not so available THE Department of Development and Housing of the Junta de Andalucia regional government (CFVJA) has opened files on eight different financial entities which possess VPO properties (council housing) and are not handing them over to the relevant councils. According to sources within the Junta, the law that regulates social housing establishes the obligation of the financial entities to communicate to the CFVJA an inventory of all available public housing in the province; only about 20 of them have done this. The CFVJA has confirmed that there are at least eight financial entities in Andalucia, among which are some of the country’s main banks, which have not made this information available. Not putting housing which has been built with public money at the disposition of the public is a serious legal infraction and the financial entities could be fined between €30,000 and €120,000

Can my neighbour install solar panels to block my light and view?
THE picture below shows the view from my kitchen windows. Without consulting me, my neighbour has installed these solar panels on his terrace. I went to the town council, but A. Perhaps you should start with your Community of Owners. Has the Community authorised the installation of the solar panels? The panels clearly alter the exterior appearance of the building, just as enclosed terraces do, and so they should require the approval of the Community. Bring the situation to the attention of your Community President. Even if the panels are not attractive and even if they cut off your light and view, these unfortunately are not legal grounds to remove them.

This will leave you with a better idea of how and where to spend the remainder of your money and see what your average daily spending should amount to, rather than just spending blindly until you’re left in the red again. There are also loads of free apps to download to help you plan and track. So no excuse, get cracking!

Amnesty solution for Spain’s homes problem ONCE again there has been much in the press about property problems in Spain. Some has even been positive with perhaps a solution to the legalisation issue on the horizon. A simple solution is an amnesty, with all houses built before a certain date to be made legal and all future planning to go through a specialist department and not the town halls. Local council officials and mayors of all parties are now in agreement that there needs to be an amendment to the Decree. Surely now, someone in the Junta de Andalucia will listen. The Junta must realise that if the houses were made legal this would boost the economy. Homes would be improved, giving work to the hundreds of builders who are currently unemployed. Houses would be put on the market for sale, which would not only bring in taxes but new furniture and cars would be purchased, giving a further boost to employment. People would no longer have to find legal fees and be constantly worried about what will happen next. They would be able to relax and enjoy life and spend more in local shops and restaurants. Town halls, instead of concentrating on legality issues, could instead concentrate their efforts on improving their towns and facilities, taking care of people and creating more employment. We are currently running a paper petition requesting an amnesty for all property built before 2008 and have gathered over 1,000 signatures locally. Weekly News that the Andalucian regional government plans to hire ‘cheap’ interpreters. Great news for the Junta’s coffers, but not so much for anyone involved in a legal process who requires an interpreter. Those currently providing the service in Malaga have university degrees in translation and interpreting and extensive knowledge of legal matters. Why should they be put out of work by mediocre counterparts willing to accept a pittance? Despite what many people may think, a knowledge of languages does not provide sufficient skill for translation or interpreting. Acquiring those skills takes time and effort. Junta officials are obviously not among those aware of the importance of accuracy in translation, especially in medical and legal matters. It is disgusting that Spain’s Criminal Procedure Act allows anyone with knowledge of languages to act as an interpreter, and also how many so-called translators/interpreters there are offering their services who are unqualified. People should stop and think of the consequences which a small misinterpretation could lead to, then maybe they wouldn’t underrate the skills of

Hard lines PERPLEXED is quite mistaken in attributing Knackebrod to Germany! This type of hard bread, made mostly of rye flour, is actually of Swedish origin. It has been baked in Sweden from around 500 AD. Roughly translated it means bread that is easy to crack. Originally considered as poor men’s food it is now considered as a healthy alternative with more dietary fibre. You will find Knackebrod in 85 per cent of Swedish homes, in Germany in 45 per cent and in France only 8 per cent. I do not know about the UK or Spain. Anders, Porreres (Mallorca)
IF it’s paranoid to go on harping on about the same things week after week, without producing any evidence to support them then I’m afraid, dear Leapy, paranoid is what you are! Week after week we get told how criminals are getting off scot free, how Islamic bigots are ruling the roost, and Britain’s towns are overrun with immigrants. Yet all that Leapy is really saying is that a lot of people think this is so. He never makes any effort to find out whether they are right in thinking so or not. In fact, whenever any serious attempt is made to check on whether, for example, an unusual number of criminals are getting off, if immigrant numbers make any serious difference to other people’s work prospects, or most British Moslems are influenced by bigots, the result is always that the alleged problem has been enormously exaggerated. In any democratic country things can happen which we may not like, but to twist the law to make sure they cannot happen would mean removing safeguards we would sadly miss. Freedom of movement is something we all think we should enjoy. A fair trial is what we expect to have if we are accused. Leapy’s articles only make it harder for British people to live in the real world. He would do better to tell us how to adapt to a society with a lot of foreigners in it, and to learn a bit about how they live and why they have left their birthplaces and come to Britain. Don’t look! WHEN I drive into town I frequently see learner drivers waiting for their instructors. On most occasions they are having a nice cosy chat over a cup of coffee and brandy (methinks) in the bar next door. I say “methinks” as they come out, fags in hands and a bit doddery. It amazes me just how many of these instructors actually know how to drive themselves. They don’t even tell the learners to use their indicators and just pull out without using a rear view mirror. Easter pro be experie ALICANTE CITY’S Semana Santa (Holy Week or Easter) will see its ‘procesiones’ (processions) start on Sunday (April 13). Often described as a week full of ‘passion and devotion,’ whatever one’s faith, it should be experienced at least once. There are 28 processions over Easter, which are amongst the city’s most important events and thousands, both locals and visitors, take to the streets to see them or take part. As well those carrying each of the ‘pasos,’ you will see marching bands, penitents dressed in pointed hoods which only show their eyes, local authorities and other members of the brotherhoods carrying the emblems. There are also penitents, mostly women, following the processions barefoot and dressed in black. One of the most spectacular components are the religious artifacts in precious metals and the elaborately embroidered cloaks and banners. The colours

used depend on each brotherhood. Easter in Alicante is closely linked to the Mediterranean Sea and is a time when religious fervour and folklore come together. Most days there are several different processions to see. The most popular is on Palm Sunday, when hundreds accompany the figure of Christ entering Jerusalem on a donkey, often carrying palm fronds. Monday is the day to see the dark-skinned figure of Christ known as ‘El Morenet’ one of the
city’s most popular, leaving the Ermita Virgen del Socorro at 6.30pm with a difficult start down steep steps. On Tuesday, three of the figures are carried out of the Basilica de Santa Maria (7.15pm) and the carriers go down on their knees to get out of the door. One of the days with most activity is Wednesday with processions well into the early hours, including a favourite, ‘Santa Cruz’ with three figures leaving from the Ermita de la Santa Cruz at 7pm
What to expect: People feel true devotion to these religious images with many clapping or crying as they pass by. Often, people spontaneously burst into song (a ‘saeta’) as the image passes their balcony. Huge crowds can be expected at all the processions, so travel light and watch belongings at all times. Spain’s largest ‘paso’ is Alicante’s ‘Santa Cena’ which is carried by some 200 people on Maundy Thursday. The Last Supper table has real food which is later donated to a local care home for the elderly. Close to midnight, Alicante’s most austere procession leaves from the co-cathedral, and the ‘Silencio’ procession is accompanied only by the sound of drums and candlelight.

Cinderella law is a step too far
O
VER the years I’ve often come out against interference in our lives by the so-called Nanny State - but this most recent Cinderella law codswallop really does make my blood boil. Who are these faceless people using taxpayers’ money to come up with such pure unmitigated nonsense? Certainly not parents, that’s for sure. How dare they encourage youngsters to grass up their parents every time they think they’ve been hard done by, it’s bordering on Hitlerism. Under the proposed law parents could be jailed for ‘emotional cruelty.’ As a father of six I dread to think how many times I could have been reported by disgruntled little offspring not happy or having their noses put out by some disciplinary decision or another. The

If they were encouraged by these out of touch lunatics to report you to the authorities, at this point they would happily report you to the hangman. Don’t they realise that nine times out of 10 within a few hours they have their arms around your neck and are telling you they are sorry and how much they love you? How are they going to enforce this law? Send a raiding squad of plod down to the family home to arrest some harassed parent making the family’s Sunday dinner after they’ve had an altercation because they

couldn’t get the children out of bed? Give us a break! Can you imagine the domestic chaos that would ensue with mum down the nick and the vegetables boiling over? No, what these people should be doing is sorting out their own departments. Instead of trying to sidetrack us all with these ridiculous red herrings
they should be investigating the monotonous regularity with which babies and toddlers are somehow ‘slipping through the net’ and dying under horrendous conditions. Yet another tot killed this week by a monster that local welfare workers somehow managed to let ‘slip under the radar’. Throwing rocks in
glasshouses comes to mind! The social services are in a disgraceful state. Most of its workers are unmarried and without families, simply because there is no time to do both. I always get the faint aroma of sour grapes when these lunatic directives emanate from their organisations. No, get your own houses in order before you start sending the SWAT teams into ours. Well my little stint in the Tenerife sunshine will soon be over. Once again I’ve had a great winter with some truly terrific folk. Thanks a bunch, everyone. See you all next year. E-cigarettes - a ban too far? People can be seen relaxing with them in pubs and restaurants, even furtively puffing on planes and trains - but what are they

ICK JONES, aged 65 from La Marina (Alicante) believes that there is not enough research into e-cigarettes at the moment and what is in them. Despite this, he has used them to help stop smoking: “It is about breaking the habit of smoking, but if you go on to e-cigarettes how do you break that habit? A lot of the time smoking is more the physical and social process of having something in your hand.” Whilst less harmful than normal cigarettes he does think they should be controlled: “They should be banned around children but I’m not sure if they could ever stop it really.” Benjamin and Barbara Crompton from Wales, on holiday in La Marina, agree it should be banned. Barbara, a care home worker, said: “I’m not a smoker, but I do notice a lot of these ecigarettes around and people are sat in bars and restaurants using them. I see smoke coming out and liquid inside so surely there is something being released

He is currently being grilled by the Treasury Select Committee over claims that some of the bank’s officials were aware of foreign exchange rate fixing. His US counterpart was Treasury Secretary Henry Paulsen. It is no coincidence that all three were former highly placed executives in Goldman Sachs private banking conglomerate. These events occurred during that bank raking in record profits.

Geithner secured for Goldman Sachs $14 billion (€10.22 billion) from the taxpayers bail-out salvation of failed insurance giant AIG. Why, despite mountains of evidence, have Goldman Sachs bankers and directors of other Wall Street institutions not been thrown in jail? It is because we have a twotiered Soviet style system of justice in which those in power, like Goldman Sachs executives, get a slap on the wrist when they steal $50 billion (€36.5 billion) whilst men go to jail for petty larceny. The working peoples of the European Union are bled dry under bank imposed austerity measures. They are asked to sacrifice pensions, wages, and jobs, yet the costs incurred in borrowing our own money (bail-out funds) dig us deeper into a hole of our own making. As Aesop, the Greek philosopher said: “We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office.”

People are using their devices last thing before sleep, with many then spending too long on them rather than getting their heads down. The survey revealed that 59 per cent of people sleep for seven hours or less a night. People with trouble dropping off are advised to not use ‘blue light’ emitting devices at bed time as they are thought to inhibit the production of a sleep inducing hormone.

Tequila plant could be used to help diabetics THE plant from which Tequila is extracted, Agave tequilana, could be used in the treatment of diabetics and the obese. Mercedes Lopez of the Biotechnology and Advanced Studies Centre, in Guanajuato, Mexico, has commented that the Agave tequilano reduces the levels of glucose and raises the levels of GLP-1 which, in turn, raises the amount of insulin in the blood. GLP-1 is a hormone that
slows the stomach’s digestion and stimulates the production of insulin. Experts from the American Society of Chemistry have commented that using Agave tequilana they could make an artificial sweetener which would reduce the glucose levels of sufferers of type 2 diabetes and contribute to weight loss in obese people. Investigations of this plant are ongoing.

Since then we have appeared at most of the Homes and Gardens shows from Marbella to Calpe gradually gaining an ability to be heard, above budding or seen better days pop stars, talking about the concept of lifestyle driven
gardens that can create attractive and productive
night throughout most of the year in private, peaceful, colourful and scented spaces. And that’s what I enjoyed doing in Calpe and doing so during the year coaching readers from Gibraltar to Girona to create their own individual Spanish climate and plant driven Garden of Eden or Shangri La.

According to statistics from the Spanish Ministry of Development there were 1,649 permits for reforms and restorations granted in Spain in January, an increase of 7 per cent over January 2013. British interest in Spanish real estate is growing BRITISH interest in Spanish real estate is growing; the areas that attracted the most enquiries were Cataluña, Andalucia and Valencia. More than 6,000 visitors attended the London international real estate exhibition of ‘A Place in the Sun’; there were 156 stands, of which 56 were Spanish. According to Inmoaction, the company representing Spain at the exhibition, 45 per cent of investors interested in the Spanish market were hoping to buy within the next six months and the most popular enquiry was for three-bedroomed properties. Daviel Talavera, Director of Inmoaction, commented that the average price that investors wanted to spend in Spain was around €260,000. He went on to say that now was not the

Good news for Banco Popular as real estate sales rise by 185 per cent GOMEZ, FRANCISCO spokesperson for the real estate section of Banco Popular, has stated that the bank’s sales of real estate have gone up by 185 per cent so far this year. Real estate sales totalled €131 million in the first two months of the year, compared with the sales of 2013, which were €46 million for the same period; this is a rise of 185 per cent. Gomez went on to comment that, in the last two months, his bank has also registered fewer defaults in payment since the beginning of the crisis. In Gomez’s opinion, this signals the beginning of the end of the housing crisis. He underlined the fact that Spain still has some way to go to get completely out of the crisis but this is a good sign. He said his bank is “prudently optimistic” for the future.

More falls, say Moody’s MOODY’S thinks that Spanish real estate prices could fall even further Moody’s, one of the big three credit rating agencies, is of the opinion that prices in the Spanish housing market could fall even further. In Spain, said the agency, the fall was gradual and had not yet finished. It also warned that mortgage defaulters were having a negative effect on the market. Given the amount of empty properties on the market, commented the agency, it will take several years for the excess of offers to level out, even with the prices having fallen for seven years in a row.

Data released by the OCP (owner’s community association) states that financial entities owe more than €342 million to communities around the country; this works out at an average of 19 per cent of the community’s total bills. In Spain there are around 130,000 unoccupied, bank-owned homes belonging to the 12 principal entities including, but not limited to, BBVA, Bankia, Unicaja and Bankinter. A property valued at €100,000 will cost a bank between €1,500 and €2,000 per year, according to the OCP.

fabulous homage to a very important part of our racing heritage.” It takes over 80 hours for a Rolls-Royce craftsperson to manufacture and hand brush the car’s striking brushed steel deck, whilst the coachline, complete with Bluebird motif, took another four hours to hand-apply using a squirrel hair brush.
CRT racing weekend IT was a full house at Albacete for the opening races in the Spanish National Championships Racing Calendar. The CRT Racing Team led by David Slader on his BMW S1000RR lined up on the grid on Sunday. The weather was sunny but with cold winds, really quite good conditions. David, known to many in Spain from his business Broadband Costa Blanca, was quick off the line and within two laps was up to fifth place having started ninth out of a field of 27.
DAVID SLADER: His first race in six years. This was David’s first race in six years and taking into account his lack of track time on a
new bike and level of fitness, the final results of the race were impressive. David came first in his
class Motodes Open 1000cc and sixth overall in the General Manchego/Valenciano Extreme 1000cc. David was racing on Dunlop road tyres, while the teams in front were on slicks which are worth at least a second a lap. At the next outing in May, David will be on slicks also and we all expect he will achieve a podium. Montgo at Alenda MONTGO Golf Society played a stableford competition at Alenda sponsored by Graham Powell. The course was in good condition and in particular the greens were running very true and were quite quick. However the weather again played a big part in making scoring difficult with a gale force wind blowing during the whole round. The top two finishers’ scores were all the more credible for this reason bearing in mind the average score was 23 points! Nigel Siddall won with 33 points holding off the challenge of another player in a
good vein of form at the moment, Arthur Burrowes, who was just one point back. Third place went to John Day (28) beating Jimmy Fletcher on handicap although Jimmy did pick up a prize for the best back nine score. Nearest the pins were won by Brian Baybut, George Braddick, Simon Fox and Stella Fox with John Feek the only player to score a two. The Society’s next game is at Oliva Nova on Friday April 18 for a stableford competition sponsored by Ian Bonser with a first tee at 9.20am.

SHORTS Over 70,000 saw Pineau De Re (ridden by Leighton Aspell) win the 167th Grand National. Brilliant Lewis Hamilton won the Bahrain Grand Prix. His Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg was second and Sergio Perez third. This was a real humdinger of a race - one of the best of all the previous 899 that have taken place. Former threetime world champion Niki Lauda confirmed it was “A truly great race... it had everything.”

Javea’s Spring Mixed Triples
THE annual Spring Triples Competition, sponsored by Blacktower Financial Management, took place over two days Apri 2-3. The event was enjoyed by 16 teams in total and played in a ‘Round Robin’ format to find four semifinalists. Rising to the challenge were team ‘So What’ who successfully took down team ‘Lloyds Bankers’ in the first of the semi-finals. In the second semi-final, team ‘Sochi’ squared up to
team ‘Jelly Babies.’ In a closely fought match, fortune finally smiled on team Sochi, they took the match by one point and claimed their finals place. After some great bowling, the victory finally went to team ‘Sochi’ by 127 points. Commiserations to the gallant runners-up team ‘So What.’ Club Captain, Barry Jowett handed out the prizes and thanked Match Secretary, Alan Phillips for organising the event.
