A facelift for quiet corners

THE town hall’s ‘Beautifying Altea’ campaign began last November and will continue into 2015. Pont de Moncau and the site of the old Casa de las Dos Torres in Calle Santa Barbara in the town’s old quarter have both had a facelift. The ‘Plan de Embellecimiento de Altea’ is another phase in the town hall’s plans to

regain “the Altea of little things, of quiet corners and friendly people,” said the mayor, Miguel Ortiz. “We want to ensure that Altea is comfortable for residents and attractive to tourists,” Ortiz continued. A surprising little package A LOCAL POLICE officer who was on his coffee break in central Benidorm noticed a discarded plastic bag. Picking it up, Francisco Ivars found several envelopes inside containing cash totalling €4,962. Noticing that the bag bore the name of a nearby jeweller’s, the officer guessed it came from there and went along to the shop. The owner was out but his wife confirmed that the bag was her husband’s so Ivars left it with her and went on his way.

Shop-owner Jose Luis Garcia afterwards explained that he had left the bag behind at the bar and that it contained several days’ takings. “Rather than the big things, it’s the little things like this which remind you that we have a police force we don’t always deserve,” the jeweller said. Benidorm’s Public Safety councillor Jose Marcet later thanked the officer for demonstrating the Local Police’s honesty. “I just did my job,” said Francisco Ivars. “It was my duty to react that way.”

ORLD HEALTH DAY is celebrated on April 7, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO). It is held to mark WHO’s founding and seen as an opportunity to draw attention to a subject of major importance to global health. The goal of the World Health Day 2014 campaign is better protection from vector-borne diseases, transmitted by mosquitoes, sandflies, bugs, ticks and snails. Mosquitoes, for example, transmit malaria although there is no danger of this in Spain, where they are simply annoying. The last confirmed case of malaria caught in Spain was in 1961. In Spain, the two most prevalent species are the Ochlerotatus which bites during the day, and the Culex pipens, or common mosquito, which bites after nightfall. According to a study published in Nature magazine, mosquitoes are attracted by carbon

The body recognises the foreign substance and attacks it, causing inflammation and itchiness.

Campello arrests follow drugs bust FORTY-TWO kilos of cocaine concealed amongst film equipment have been intercepted at Alicante Airport. Packing cases full of cameras and other material for film-making were flown to Argentina in December last year, returning three months later. An inspection by Customs officials at the airport working in collaboration with officers from the Fiscal Analysis and Investigation unit

(ODAIFI) found that the crates contained rather more than appeared on the Customs’ declaration. Closer examination revealed false sides to the packing cases which, once dismantled, revealed 72 packages of a substance subsequently identified as cocaine. Two men aged 52 and 56, both with Dutch nationality, were later arrested in Campello in connection with the discovery.

Donation in memory of teacher BENIDORM’S Costa Blanca International College has donated four tons of food to Alfaz’s San Jose parish church. The donation was made in memory of the school’s headmaster, Javier Garcia Caballero, who died not long ago. The 4,000 kilos of non-perishable foodstuff was collected by pupils, teachers, parents, relatives and friends. The family of the former headmaster live in Alfaz del Pi and have handed over the donation to Miguel Angel Schiller, the parish priest at San Jose church, for distribution amongst the needy.

Inspecting the past THE Friends of Javea Museum (Amics del Museu) recently enjoyed another ‘Wednesday for the curious.’ This time they did not go far as they visited the local San Bartolome church. Construction of the church-fortress, listed as a national monument in

1931, began in the 14th century but has undergone several additions and alterations in the intervening centuries. Fifty or so Amics were accompanied by archaeologists Ximo Boluer and Josep Castello. The high spot of the San Bartolome visit was the climb to the

top of the church, known as ‘els montons’ owing to the domes over the nave and bell-tower. These served a vital purpose when San Bartolome fulfilled its double role of church and fortress as they were used as lookouts to warn of pirates and invaders.

Legally water CALPE’S water from the Vall de Laguar is now legal. The Confederacion Hidrografica del Jucar water board (CHJ) recently ceded the water to the consortium of town councils belonging to Calpe, Murla and Vall de Laguar. Water from the Pozo Lucifer aquifer from the Barranc de l’Infern in the Girona River has ensured an uninterrupted domestic water supply for Calpe since 1988 but only now, 26 years later, has the arrangement been formally approved. Each year 3.8 million cubic metres of water are extracted from Pozo Lucifer of which 3.6 million cubic metres go to Calpe. In legalising the supply, the CHJ brushed aside protests from neighbouring town halls that included Pedreguer, Els Poblets and Benimeli. “This is a historic day,” declared Calpe Mayor Cesar Sanchez at a meeting of the consortium. “It guarantees our future as a tourist destination,” Sanchez said.

Lost and found bike AN electrically-assisted bicycle was found recently in the Benidorm area. As it was discovered in the middle of the road it is believed that it could have fallen from the back of a camper van.

Humans on the Stone Age menu THE Cueva del Conde in Pedreguer continues to surprise archaeologists. Its wall art depicting horses and goats was created 20,000 years ago, experts found, making it three times older than other examples in this part of Spain. The only drawback for the 60 per cent of travellers not staying in Alicante City is how they reach their final destinations once they arrive. There is a taxi rank at the AVE station but no bus link and travellers

Exhibition looks back to last Easter A PEGO exhibition is currently giving a foretaste of what Holy Week will bring later this month. FOLLOWING last year’s successful campaign, Denia is again being advertised on the Madrid metro. Eye-catching posters depicting Denia on the capital’s busiest underground lines are now in place on principal stations as well as the Atocha and Chamartin terminals. In 2013, visitors from the Madrid region accounted for 37.7 per cent of Denia’s quota of national tourism, outstripping the 25 per cent from the Valencian Community and 8 per cent from Cataluña. The month-long campaign will last until April 14 just as the Easter holidays begin. Electrobeach festival failed to electrify hotel guests TWO luxury Benidorm hotels have appealed against the granting of the licence for the Electrobeach festival last August.

The regional government authorised the festival held in the Terra Mitica car park, distant from Benidorm itself but within earshot of the

Villaitana and Asia Gardens hotels. Both warned that the town hall should suspend the event if there was too much noise. As feared, sound levels were exceeded, prompting complaints from clients. The Electrobeach promoters were subsequently fined €2,400 and the hotels have now started legal proceedings against the regional government for having authorised the event. Documents presented by the promoters when applying for the licence have been sent to the Alicante judge dealing with the case. “Authorisation for these festivals is based on reports submitted beforehand. If everything is in order we can’t discriminate against them because we suspect they won’t comply,” said regional government sources.

Delay for Palm Grove Adventure park THE opening of Elche’s new multi-activity park

has been delayed until October. ‘Elche Palm Grove Adventure’ is the name officially given to the park which is being built in the Travalon Bajo on the road leading to the

football field and El Altet. Attractions will include an artificial lake, zip line, climbing walls, picnic and chill-out areas. Last summer the council announced the park would be ready for

this summer, but it has now been postponed. The project has an investment of €1.5 million and is expected to provide direct employment for 30 to 35 people and 70 indirectly.

Cocaine found at airport CUSTOMS at Alicante-Elche Airport have seized 42 kilos of cocaine. The drugs were detected in a shipment from Argentina. The haul was in two shipping containers purportedly containing photographic and filming equipment, with 72 packages of cocaine found in false bottoms of the containers. Following the discovery and police investigation, two Dutchmen were arrested in El Campello. The detainees will appear in Elche’s Court Number Five.

35 years of organ transplants MORE THAN 8,000 organs have been transplanted in the Valencian Community since 1979, when organ transplants first began. The first transplant in the region was carried out at Valencia’s La Fe Hospital involving a kidney on April 9, 1979. In the 1980s the hospital began the heart transplant programme followed by liver and lung in the 1990s. Last year, 410 organ transplants were performed from 180 donors, including nine live patients who donated organs. Carlos Santiago, Coordinator of the Transplant Unit at Alicante’s General Hospital, said they have multi-lingual staff to speak with families carefully following a death about organ donation. “In 94 per cent of cases the answer is favourable,” he said.

The accident occurred in a house in the Cansalades urbanisation, where the child and his mother were on holiday at the home of some of their friends. At the time of the accident the Belgian mother and the owners of the property were present and quickly called the emergency services after noticing the youngster had fallen into the pool. Paramedics were unable to revive the little boy. The family was due to fly back to Belgium this week.

Identity theft A WOMAN, 25, was arrested in Castellon for presenting the health card of another when she gave birth. The investigation began when police went to her home to arrest her for theft. They found a baby girl in the house which she claimed was not her daughter. She was taken into custody and police found that when she had the baby, she had presented the health card of another woman in order to get assistance at a health centre. Therefore, the other woman’s details were on the baby’s birth certificate. She had reported that her handbag, with documents inside it including her health card, had been stolen. The detainee was charged with identity theft and has a criminal record for robbery and theft.

The baby, Luna, received all the organs from one donor in an operation carried out in the multi-transplant unit of the

Soldier dies in French Pyrenees AN Alicante soldier has died whilst climbing in the French Pyrenees. The soldier was from the Mountain Hunters Regiment ‘America’ 66, and was in the Pyrenees with two friends from his unit to practise mountaineering activities. The 31-year-old went missing during the descent of the Midi D’Ossau peak and was buried under a metre of snow. His body is being repatriated to Spain.

Helping the young cope with cancer A GALA event takes place tonight (Thursday) at the Provincial Auditorium of Alicante to help raise funds for the Association of Parents of Children with Cancer (Aspanion). Around 40 companies are taking part including social organisations, with all proceeds going to Aspanion. As well as being a financial fundraiser, organiser Marisa Caturla stressed that the idea is to also improve the selfesteem of young people coping with cancer. Guardia Civil release names of the Top 10 ‘most wanted’ THE Guardia Civil have released their list of top 10 most wanted criminals. The Guardia Civil has appealed for help, asking colleagues from around 20 countries for assistance in finding the dangerous individuals in question. This step has been a first for the law enforcement agency, which doesn’t usually issue international requests for help. Commander Oscar Esteban gave out the list which includes the mug shot, description and criminal history of each fugitive. He explained that the organisation was asking international police bodies and concerned citizens for their cooperation “because

of the seriousness of the crimes and because of the difficulty locating them.” Esteban also held a short presentation for each of the 10 criminals, nine men and a woman. The Spaniards are Juan Monteagudo Marmol, who is wanted for sexually abusing his daughter and battering his wife, and Jorge Simarro Arbiza, wanted for drug trafficking. The other fugitives on the list are from Paraguay, Romania, Venezuela, Ukraine, Italy, France, Morocco and the former Yugoslavia. They are wanted for crimes ranging from murder to mafia activity. Esteban said: “They are 10 of around 500 individuals with international arrest warrants against them in Spain. He admitted that they could be “in any other country.”

THE SUPREME COURT has absolved a man who died in prison serving a sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. The man was condemned to prison by the Sevilla courts in 2011 for a violent robbery in which the thief was cut and left blood at

Germany can expel unemployed Spanish citizens after six months THE German government can limit immigrant Spaniards’ access to social care, including health care, and restrict residence permits to Europeans who have been unemployed for six months. The Vice-President of

have no means of supporting themselves. For Almunia this reflects the necessity to reinforce a Europe-wide legal immigration policy. He explains that the ability to expel EU citizens is not in accordance with the free transit of workers

In Brussels the spokesperson for Employment and Social Affairs, Jonathan Todd, has pointed out that the law states that people can travel freely throughout the zone but they do not have the absolute right to permanently stay in another country. Doctors call for patients to be fined THE President of Spain’s Medical Colleges Organization supports a campaign to fine patients who don’t really need medical treatment or who go to the wrong hospital. Under the new proposals, patients could be fined for their ‘bad usage’ of the country’s healthcare system. Juan José Rodríguez Sendín has rejected suggestions of a joint payment

system for Spaniards visiting their GPs, opting instead to support a campaign which would fine patients for improper use of the country’s state health system. Sendín said that those who “go a lot” to the doctor do so because “they’re scared” and “think it will delay their final day.” Some of the reasons named by Sendín when calling for the penalties were:

Two girls found in a cave in Tenerife THE tourist police in Arona, Tenerife, found two German girls aged 10 and seven living in a cave with a man, also German. The mother of the girls has been arrested after she left the girls with an acquaintance who promised to take them to school every day. In January the girls were found living with

their mother in tents on the beach in Callao and social services were called which prompted the girls to be enrolled in school. When the police went back five days later, to check on the girls, they were told by neighbours that they were no longer there but that the mother remained. When the police located

the mother she said she had left them with an acquaintance who would take them to school. The mother told the police where to find them which turned out to be a cave in the Guaza Mountain. Police are trying to locate the girls’ grandparents in Germany to see if they will take them in.

“When people don’t take their names off the waiting list, when they deliberately put their name down twice, when they don’t pick up their diagnoses or prescriptions, or when they go to the ER rather than to a regular health centre.” However, The President of Spain’s health patient watchdog, Carmen Flores, has described the top doctor’s words as “an utter disgrace.”

Flores argued: “Only those who aren’t right in the head make bad use of the ER services. “What happens is that when you have toothache or a high temperature, you’re put on a waiting list for a week. Are we going to have to pay because of that? “(Sendín) is not helping doctors by suggesting this. I imagine they don’t support his claims because threatening to make patients pay is neither decent nor humane.”

Robbing the banks ONE of Spain’s most famous bank robbers has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison, despite his defence that he was only stealing from thieves. He was found guilty of robbing a bank in Madrid in February 2007 when he got away with €16,510. The prosecution had asked for a sentence of 15 years, but as he already had a sentence for possessing illegal arms, this was reduced to five. Jaime Jimenez Arbe, AKA El Solitario, claimed he did not rob the banks but rather he was simply applying a ‘revolutionary tax’ on them because they were also thieves.

Fire ravages Sierra de Gador A FIRE that blazed for three days through the Sierra de Gador, Almeria, has been brought under control. More than 1,000 people and several mobile units worked to control the flames in difficult wind conditions. Among them were 500 agents from INFOCA (fire prevention and control), three pumping trucks, members of the Civil Protection Unit, environmental technicians and 231 members of the Andalucia Military Emergency Unit. Although the fire is now out, INFOCA has continued to keep watch on the area to make sure there is no danger of it coming back to life. The operation also had aerial support in the form of five helicopters, two amphibious planes and a spotter plane. The INFOCA Forest Department said the affected area was 3,169 hectares of which 3,038 was scrubland and 130 forest areas. INFOCA is still investigating the cause of the fire but it is likely to have been an electrical cable that fell and contacted the ground.

Briton gets 15 months for death of Matthew Blue A BRITISH man has accepted 15 months in prison for killing another Briton following a fight in Port d’Alcudia. He and a German man stood trial in Palma Provincial Court for the involuntary manslaughter of Briton, Matthew Blue, 32, in April 2009. Three friends, including the victim, went out for a drink and met another group in the street at around 1am. One of the victim’s

friends reportedly commented on the appearance of someone in the other group and a fight ensued. Blue was punched in the head, and pushed to the floor, where he hit his head and was also kicked in the head. He passed out but minutes later he got up, apparently fine. An hour later he began feeling dizzy, but his friends thought he was drunk and put him to bed. At around 5am, one of his

friends heard a noise and found him on the floor, unconscious. Paramedics were unable to revive him and he died in Son Dureta Hospital. The Briton admitted in court that he had kicked the victim when he was on the ground and that it was possible he had kicked him in the head, but he had been drunk and couldn’t remember. The German denied having been involved in the attack and is facing

four years in prison. The British man, however, says the German fought the victim, punching him in the head before he fled the scene. This was confirmed by one of the victim’s friends, as well as by a police officer who was told when he arrived at the scene that the attacker had left. Workers find Civil War bomb TWO workers who found a bomb while carrying out repairs to the roof of a building in central Madrid, took the explosive device to the police station. This type of find is not unusual but removing it and transporting it to the police station certainly is. The appearance of two workers carrying a bomb, albeit an old one, provoked the immediate evacuation of the police station, as well as neighbouring buildings, for over an hour. The TEDAX (bomb disposal unit) were called and took the bomb away with them. Initial analysis points to the bomb being empty of explosive charges, which would explain why it didn’t explode on impact.

Violence is never justified A

BRITISH man has been jailed for the death of a young father in Mallorca. A German man faces up to four years in jail over the same incident. Briton Matthew Blue, 32, who had two young children and another on the way, was enjoying a night out with friends in the popular party area of Port d’Alcudia, just as many thousands of others do every year, mostly without incident. But a comment from one of his friends was enough to draw the attention of another group of young men. That was to be fatal for Matthew. He was knocked to the ground and kicked in the head. He later died. A family was left without a father, three young children left without a chance to have the normal

upbringing many of us take for granted. There will be no dad to take them to the park, no father to help bring them up. No cherished memories of a care-free upbringing. Three young lives blighted. Leaving aside the sentences (is 15 months enough punishment for the death of a man, even if it was not intended?) it was, and remains, a tragedy. It should be a lesson to everyone, young men in particular, that violence is never justified. Too many young men seem to think a punch-up is just part of the night’s entertainment. This tragedy is a lesson that drink-fuelled aggression can kill and leave young children with a life sentence to endure. Fun? Not for Matthew Blue and his three young children.

Eurozone inflation provides a little cheer THE global economy shows signs of expanding gradually in most advanced economies, on the back of firming domestic and external demand coupled with an extremely accommodative monetary policy. However, growth numbers are fairly uneven across the globe, as emerging markets have taken a hit as the US Federal Reserve winds down its stimulus measures. Janet Yellen, in a hawkish stance, has also indicated to the markets that the Federal Reserve will wind down stimulus by the latter half of 2014 with a possibility of an interest rate hike as early as spring 2015. European stock markets finished February in positive territory, after a fairly volatile period owing to the uncertainty from the Italian elections. In terms of economic data, Eurozone inflation numbers came

in slightly better than expected prompting intermittent strength in the Euro, dispelling deflationary risks to the economy. This has also buoyed up the currency and gives the European Central Bank (ECB) some breathing space in terms of interest rates and Mario Draghi’s Long Term Refinancing Option scheme, which are both put on hold for the moment. Despite inflation coming in well below the ECB’s target of 2.0 per cent, Mario Draghi reassured markets in a statement saying, “we are clearly not in deflation, which is defined as a selfreinforcing fall in prices that is broad-based across items and

Compared to Sterling, the Euro looks to be fairly stable closer to the 1.20 mark despite the barrage of positive economic data from the UK that has been fairly

consistent over the last three quarters. The UK economy is due to move forward as the fastest among the advanced economies, so intermittent Euro weakness is set to persist over the month if data from the UK is continually optimistic. Meanwhile, German IFO Business climate numbers as well as the ZEW Economic sentiment

continued to help the Euro maintain its strength, as markets are fairly confident of the recovery as Germany has also been upgraded to ‘stable’ from a ‘negative’ rating by Moody’s. As far as Southern Europe goes, France disappointed in terms of services as well as manufacturing data, GDP estimates for Spain were revised downwards marginally and Italian GDP numbers revealed contraction in the region. With such mixed economic data coming out of the Eurozone, markets are fairly circumspect on the recovery, which, although gaining traction slowly is not out of the woods just yet. With such caution and trepidation in the markets, expect the Euro to remain fairly weak over the coming month and to regain levels of 1.20 against Sterling, at best, as the UK economy is nicely set up for a surge forward.

Spanish homes remain uninsured THE Spanish are cutting down on insurance. Car owners increasingly downgrade from comprehensive cover to third party insurance, according to the Kelisto.es website. Property owners are giving house insurance a complete miss, and Kelisto’s Celia Duran calculates there are now 8.5 million houses and apartments - 30 per cent of the total - without any kind of cover. This is a slight improvement on 2010, however, when there were a total of 9 million uninsured homes. In the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, 78.3 per cent of properties are uninsured, followed by the Canary Islands (55.7 per cent), Castilla-La Mancha (52.7 per cent) and Extremadura (50.6 per cent).

A bigger stadium BARCELONA football club’s stadium, inaugurated in 1957, is no longer adequate for its needs. SPANISH OIL: Would create many jobs.

On track for fracking SPAIN’S offshore oil currently occupies the headlines, but there is inland oil too. It was discovered in landlocked La Lora (Burgos) in 1963 and extraction started a year later. Production peaked in the late 60s and early 70s before dwindling. Industry experts calculated that despite reserves of up to 100 million barrels, the Ayaluengo oilfield’s wells were too scattered to be profitable. Oil prices have risen since then and plans to increase production could be resumed. The British Leni Gas and Oil (LGO) whose subsidiary Compañia Petrolifera de Sedano exploits the wells has ceded a 65 per cent stake in the latter to Italian company, Pansoinco. In return Pansoinco will finance the cost of developing the Ayoluengo field between

now and 2017 in a deal that should be signed by April 30. Meanwhile Repsol subsidiary Ripsa has extracted offshore oil since 1981 off the Ebra Delta in Cataluña. It produces 8,000 barrels of crude oil from three separate wells. Further prospection plans off the Gulf of Valencia, the Balearics and the Canary Islands are meeting bitter opposition from environmentalists and the tourism and fisheries industries. Oil and gas exploration and subsequent production in Spain would create 260,000 direct and indirect jobs, revealed a study by Deloitte for ACIEP, an association of Spanish companies specialising in hydrocarbon investigation, exploration and production.

Ever-changing landscape is a constant delight I AM amazed by the way the landscape changes in Spain. Its harshness and unforgiving presence would lend you to think that nothing would survive, yet it does. The land is actually very fertile and arable. On many walks I have seen areas of emptiness turn into vast areas of green one month, then empty the next. Several crops a year of lettuce, green beans and celery and polytunnels that make the area look like lakes from a distance change the landscape almost before your eyes. Workers toil relentlessly, shredding and discarding the waste and packing the good produce into boxes. As the workers make their way through the field in the searing heat it is like watching an insect eating a leaf as the green gradually disappears. A couple of days later the field is scattered with debris, the irrigation hoses removed and rolled up at the side of the field. The tractors then come in and cultivate the area, ploughing the crop debris back into the land. The irrigation hoses are replaced and the whole process starts all over again. I love my walks, not just for the exercise but also for the experience of seeing the landscape change, and knowing why. Primus Lambert (by email)

We placed the apartment with one of the local agents but as there was no response we chose a different agent. A ‘Se Vende’ sign was attached to the terrace railings and soon after it went missing. On searching around we found it in the garden and replaced it on the railings. Within days it had gone again and on investigation we found the plastic ties on the terrace. A neighbour found the sign at the bottom of the road and once again we attached it securely to the railings.

The same thing happened a few days later but this time the sign had gone! We purchased and placed a personal ‘Se Vende’ notice with our private telephone number on the railings, which was pulled off after several days. Recognition due I NOTED from the Euro Weekly News that Mijas Town Council erected a plaque in honour of Japanese tourists. Then I read elsewhere that British people are among the main buyers of property in the Costa del Sol and that the British market maintains its hegemony despite an increase in other foreign buyers. FINANCE The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne delivered his Budget to Parliament on 19th March. By far the biggest surprise was the announcement of a complete overhaul to the pension regime. Here is a summary of the issues that may affect British expatriates. I will cover more issues in my next article. Personal tax Personal allowances increase £10,000 for the 2014/15 tax year, and again to £10,500 for 2015/16. The higher rate threshold also increases to £41,865 from 6th April 2014, and by a further 1% a year later. The Government will consult on whether to withdraw the personal allowance from non-UK residents, except those with ‘strong economic connections in the UK.’ As previously announced, married couples and civil partners will be able to transfer up to 10% of their personal allowance to their partner. This may apply to expatriate couples if one of you has UK source income. Savings On 1st July 2014, cash and shares ISAs will merge into a “New ISA” or “NISA”, with an annual limit of £15,000. Expatriates will still be liable to tax in their country of residence on interest, dividends and gains arising within ISA wrappers.

The UK Budget – How Does It Affect You? Part 1

By Robert Croizat, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks The amounts that can be invested in premium bonds will increase to £40,000 in 2014/2015 and £50,000 from 2015/2016. There will be more £1 million prizes. Winners resident outside the UK may be liable to tax in their country of residence. Pension reform Several measures were introduced in one of the largest reforms of the

defined contribution pension system since 1921. Pension holders are now being granted a far wider range of access to their funds after retirement. These changes came into effect on 27th March 2014: • A reduction in the minimum income requirement for accessing flexible drawdown to £12,000. • An increase in the capped drawdown limit to 150% of equivalent annuity. • The total pension wealth people can have before they are no longer entitled to receive lump sums under trivial commutation rules increases to £30,000. • An increase to the small pension pots lump sum limit to £10,000, and the number of pots that can be taken as a lump sum increased to three. From 6th April 2015 members of defined contribution schemes will have much more flexibility in how

they deal with their pension on retirement. The requirement to buy an annuity has already been removed and the 25% tax free lump sum continues to be available, but from April 2015 retirees will have three choices for the balance of their pension: 1) Withdraw their entire pension fund on retirement, with the withdrawal taxed at their marginal income tax rates, rather than 55% as currently the case. 2) Purchase an annuity. 3) Flexible drawdown benefits over time. Remember, you need to consider local tax in your country of residence. A consultation has been launched regarding transferring out of Defined Benefit Schemes into Defined Contributions Schemes. Consideration will be given to allowing individuals aged 75 and over to claim tax relief on pension

contributions. The Government will consult on increasing the minimum pension age so it remains ten years below state pension age. HM Revenue & Customs has been given new powers to help prevent pension liberation schemes being registered, and to make it easier to de-register them. This measure is designed to catch schemes which allow members to access their pension fund before reaching retirement, which HMRC views as fraud. My next article will look at capital gains tax, property tax and inheritance tax. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Starsky and Hutch (Film, 2004) This affectionate, full-throttle cinematic remake of the 1970s US cop TV series roared on to our screens in thick clouds of burning rubber in 2004. While it seemed impossible that David Starsky and Ken Hutchinson could be played by anyone other than Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul in the original, surprisingly Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson (pictured) do a sterling job here, so much so that after 20 minutes or so, you're hooked and willing the pair on. Tropic Thunder (Film, 2008) BBC 3 from 10:20pm to 12:00am While filming on location, Vietnam war epic Tropic Thunder is derailed by star Tugg Speedman's (Ben Stiller) inability to emote. Director Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) attempts to liven up proceedings by dropping the principal actors into the middle of a real jungle, claiming he's going to capture their performances with guerrilla-style film-making and hidden cameras. But the hapless group - including drug-addled comedy star Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) and po-faced method man Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) - are completely unaware when a series of unfortunate events leads them into the middle of a real war zone. Taking no prisoners, Stiller's Hollywood satire mercilessly lampoons the ego-driven industry with a clutch of close-to-the-bone gags that caused a wave of controversy on the film's release. The sight of Downey Jr playing a white actor who has undergone cosmetic surgery to appear black might have led to much debate, but within the context of the film it's an incisively, well-judged stab at Hollywood pomposity.

It’s a dog, not a little human...

HEN are people going to realise that animals are animals and not human beings? When are they going to realise that treating our felines and darling doggies like Homo sapiens is not only dangerous but in the world of pooch pampering and odd haircuts, bordering on near unacceptable cruelty? Frankly, allowing dogs and cats to actually lick faces and mouths can often make me feel physically sick. They’ve just been licking their nether regions, for heaven’s sake! How much muck gets transferred to your mouth when you allow them to slobber over you and the children? I also thought the recent photo of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and baby George gave out the wrong message. I don’t care how docile their pet is. In the picture their dog’s mouth is about two inches from

little George’s face. What if the dog suddenly got a sharp toothache or other unexpected pain? What if it was harbouring some form of jealousy? It could have ripped the little tot’s face in the blink of an eye. Now we find our cats are spreading TB. Isn’t it time we all took a step back and tried to inject some common sense in the treatment of our pets?

Please don’t get me wrong, I am a pet lover. The difference is I’ve always treated my animals like animals and believe me they are much happier for it. I’ll give you an example. Many years ago, I managed a singing trio. These three girls had a miniature poodle which they absolutely doted on and treated like a baby. The thing was shampooed two or three times a

week, carried everywhere and generally ruined. Consequently it was an overweight, snappy, badtempered little tyke and I hated it. One day they were offered a tour of South Africa and naturally couldn’t take the dog. With great reluctance they had no choice but to leave it with me. Right, I thought, things are going to change. The first thing

I did was give it water to drink instead of milk! Instead of carrying the thing around I began taking it on long runs in Hyde Park. Shampooing was of course completely out of the window. The transformation was nothing short of miraculous. Within a couple of weeks, its little body had taken on a whole new shape and become toned. Its curly coat was tight and firm and its whole demeanour had changed to a happy, lovable, healthy little DOG. Which was as nature intended. On the girls’ return I expected them to be pleasantly surprised at the remarkable change in their little ‘oochy coo’. Not so, within two or three weeks of their usual treatment, it reverted to the miserable, pampered, snappy little cur it had always been. I rest my case. EMEMBER reading about all those EU butter mountains and milk lakes decades ago? Seems as though not much has changed in the UK either, as far as waste’s concerned. According to a recent report, MPs have travelled all over the globe including to Los Angeles, Australia and Brazil, all at taxpayers’ expense - £1.7 million (€2.06 million) since 2010. Six went on a £5,000 (€6,000) trip to Paris last year to investigate ‘cafés, gift shops and broadcasting rights in the French Parliament.’ Result? After all, Westminster’s parliamentary traditions have served as a model for democracies all over the world. Basically, we’ve no reason to mock African politicians’ corrupt practices. Most international visits are simply taxpayer-funded jollies for MPs. But don’t let’s ever forget that we’re all in this together. What a waste!
