Woman sent police to children’s party A WOMAN, 31, has been sentenced to a year in prison for making a false report claiming that her ex-husband had abducted their 20-month-old baby.

The events took place in January 2012 when the couple had separated and agreed that the baby would spend the afternoon at a family party in Palma with its father.

Invasive animals are taking over INVASIVE species are spreading on the island of Mallorca. The Balearic Islands Fauna Recovery Consortium (COFIB) has denounced these animals, also known as exotics, as taking over local wildlife. Only in 2013, the COFIB recovered 334 exotic animals, including coatis and racoons from America. These could be bought in pet shops until 2012, the year in which their sale was banned. They are called invasive as they displace and threaten local animals like the endangered Mallorcan midwife toad or ‘ferreret.’ Most of them served as pets until they just grew too big or their owners realised they couldn’t live in enclosed spaces. No compensation to be paid CALVIA Council won’t have to pay €40,956 compensation to a girl who cut her hand with a broken bottle while playing in Cala Falco. The Balearic Island Advisory Committee has dismissed a complaint made by the girl’s parents accusing the town council of being responsible for the incident. The events took place in June 2011, when the girl accidentally cut her hand with a broken glass while playing in the sand at Cala Falco. She was taken to Son Espases Hospital, where

doctors told her parents she had cut several tendons. Two months later, the parents lodged a complaint accusing Calvia Town Council of failing to keep the beach clean. They also accused the beach bar where the bottle supposedly came from, saying drinks were being served on the beach. Back then, a magistrate dismissed the complaint as there were no evidences to prove negligence, something the Balearic Island Advisory Committee has confirmed.

Top of the tips… L EAVING a tip in Spain is not obligatory and there are no set rules as there are in the USA, however, it is much appreciated. Despite the financial crisis, according to a survey carried out by the Hoteles.com site, most people continue to leave tips. When it comes to foreign tourists, the North Americans are reportedly the most generous, with 71 per cent leaving tips, the British (34 per cent) and the Germans (26 per cent) are also amongst the top tippers, as well as the Russians and Scandinavians. Amongst Spanish tourists, 6 per cent claim they always leave tips, 24 per cent do so occasionally and only 8 per cent never leave anything. Tourists from Madrid are apparently the most

Man who threatened police is sentenced to prison A PALMA court has sentenced a man to prison for attacking and threatening police, and damaging cars with an axe and a large hammer in October 2013. The man, whose sentence was reduced for

being mentally disturbed, pleaded guilty and will now have to face two years and nine months in prison. He will also have to pay €700 compensation to one

of the officers and a total of €3,776 to the owners of the vehicles he damaged. Local Police received a call in October 2013 that a man was destroying the

NEWS Boy in serious condition after football accident A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy is in a serious condition after he almost lost a finger when a foldable goal accidentally folded while playing football in Palma. According to Palma firefighters, the victim was training at La Salle school in the afternoon when, for reasons unknown, the goal folded trapping a finger on his left hand. Firefighters had to cut the metallic bars of the goal with a circular saw to release the boy. An ambulance later took him to Son Espases Hospital, where he was admitted in a serious condition.

Coca-Cola workers’ last act of protest COCA-COLA employees in Palma staged a last act of protest last Friday. Nearly 90 cars, according to trade union UGT, drove through the streets of Palma to protest against the closure of the company’s bottling plant in the city. They did so the day the period open for negotiations between Coca-Cola and trade

unions finished, with no agreement reached. The Atlanta, US, based company, offered voluntary dismissals for employees, consisting of 45 days’ salary for each year worked, with a maximum of 42 months, plus an additional €10,000. It kept, however, its decision to close four of its 11 bottling plants in

Spain, including the Palma one. With no agreement, a period of 15 days since last Friday was opened for Coca-Cola to announce its plans, which can affect some 90 workers in Palma. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola employees agreed to continue their indefinite strike and study new actions.

Waiter acquitted of sexual abuse A WAITER from S’Arenal has been acquitted of sexually abusing a mentally disabled coworker twice in 2010. A Palma court considered the couple had non-violent, consensual sex, and that the man did not take advantage of the woman’s disability. It also said that, despite her condition, the woman has enough capacity to consent to sexual relationships. The events took place in 2010, when the 33-year-old man worked with the victim in a hotel in S’Arenal. According to the court’s ruling, the woman was performing a sex act on him after they had a conversation, but stopped because she felt disgust. Four days later the man asked the woman again for sex, ceasing the moment she told him she was in pain. The woman sustained minor injuries and required psychological treatment after the event.

Saving mills PALMA City Council is to brick up the arcs of the mills located in the historic area of El Jonquet to prevent them from collapsing.

New location THE soup kitchen in Calle Patronat Obrer in Palma has been moved to a municipal building located behind the Congress Hall. This would save the city council €3,000 per month, said sources.

Infanta avoided judge’s questions almost 580 times THE Infanta Cristina answered “I don’t know” 412 times during her appearance in court in Palma. A transcript of her appearance before judge Jose Castro in Palma court to answer to charges in the Noos corruption case

reveals that she also said “I can’t remember” 82 times, “I am unaware” on 58 occasions and “I didn’t know” 14 times. Her statement lasted six hours during which she mainly answered questions regarding the activities of Aizoon, the

company created allegedly to hide the €6 million of public funds illegally obtained through the Noos Institute. She said she was unaware of what the company did, despite owning half of it with her husband Iñaki Urdangarin.

She avoided answering the judge on almost 580 occasions and claimed that she participated in the company because she trusted her husband and that she never had anything to do with its accounts. A video of her

statement was recorded illegally. The Duke of Palma could face between 10 and 19 years in prison for embezzlement, corruption, document falsification, fraud against the administration and tax evasion.

A rubbish story of two urbanisations THE location of a rubbish collection point has brought two urbanisations from the Colonia de Sant Pere area in Arta against each other. Residents of S’Estanyol have complained the council is considering installing a rubbish collection point on a plot of land near their

urbanisation. The 12,000m2 plot, located next to the town’s sewage plant, was bought and offered to the town council by the residents of the Es Pinaret urbanisation. They decided to do so, fearing plans to install a rubbish collection point near their homes would affect the value of their

property, to the outrage of the people at S’Estanyol. Now the two urbanisations are quarrelling to convince the authorities their proposed location is the best. The president of the S’Estanyol residents’ association, Africa Lorente, told local

newspaper Diario de Mallorca the original location for the collection point should be respected. Lorente went on and criticised what she considered “coercion” against the town hall by the residents at Es Pinaret. For their part, people at Es Pinaret claimed a

rubbish collection point in their urbanisation would suppose a loss in both the environmental and property value of the area. They supported their proposal on the back of economic reasons, adding the plot they are offering the town hall would make it save some €52,000. ENRIC BORRAS ON FLICKR

SON BANYA: Drugs were being sold in the shantytown.

Gang members jailed EIGHT members of a drug trafficking gang in Palma have been sentenced to 21 years of prison altogether. The so-called Kung Fu gang was accused of selling heroin, cocaine and hashish in the shantytown of Son Banya. The leader of the gang, known as ‘El Kung Fu,’ was sentenced to four-and-a-

half years in prison, where the rest of his gang was sentenced to between two and three years. One of the accused was acquitted after the public prosecutor dropped the charges against him. In court, they all pleaded guilty to a crime against public health to see their sentenced reduced.

Germans arrested for threats FOUR German men, aged between 22 and 30, were arrested in Palma for allegedly threatening a business owner over a debt. The accused went to the company’s headquarters

and forced one of the employees to take them to his boss’s home, National Police said. Once there, the men threatened the business owner and his family in order to obtain the money

he supposedly owed to one of them. According to National Police, one of the arrested worked for the man in his company for a few hours, but was never paid for that.

Mobile thieves TWO men have been arrested in S’Arenal for allegedly stealing 52 mobile phones and several laptops that were later sold in a second-hand shop in Palma.

Pipes stolen GUARDIA CIVIL arrested two young men, 23 and 25, who reportedly stole 70 borehole pipes in a farm in Campos. The stolen goods were worth €21,000, Guardia Civil said.

Rapist found A DNA test has allowed National Police to arrest a man, 28, for raping a woman in 2002 in Palma. The Minor’s Prosecutor Office will now be in charge of the case as the man was aged 17 when the event took place.

Siblings arrested TWO teenagers, a brother and a sister, were arrested together with another man for allegedly robbing and tying up a woman in her Manacor house. According to National Police, they assaulted the wrong house as they asked the 43-year-old victim for the “priest’s rosary and silver.” The sister, 16, knocked on the woman’s door pretending to ask for something. She was then approached by two hooded men, including the girl’s 17year-old brother, who tied her up while holding a knife against her throat. The alleged robbers fled the house 20 minutes later leaving the woman tied up until her eight-year-old son found her.

Iain Duncan Smith visits fraud team IAIN DUNCAN SMITH, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, visited the Benefit Fraud investigation team in Spain to thank them for their hard work. The team has investigated more than 1,200 cases to date and has recovered almost €6.05 million of UK taxpayers’ money. More allegations of benefit fraud are received in Spain than in any other foreign country. Fraudulent claims for Pension Credit and Income Support are the most frequently investigated. A man who left Britain to set up a catering firm in Spain is one of the latest cases to come to court. Nigel Hadley, 61, of Pembroke Dock, west Wales, has been ordered to sell his Spanish property to pay back more than €30,000 in falsely claimed benefits.

Hadley moved to Marbella in 2000 and bought a fisherman’s cottage two years later. He returned to Britain in 2011 and claimed employment support allowance, as well as housing benefit and council tax benefit. He failed to inform the authorities that he had a property in Spain, despite being asked verbally and on claim forms. He was caught after the Department for Work and Pensions sent him a ‘habitual residency’ claim form which specifically asked whether he had any other property. After he once more failed to reveal his foreign property, investigators discovered his Spanish home. Hadley has been sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to pay back €31,420 of claimed benefits through the sale of his €109,000 property, his only asset.

Five sentenced for illegal sales FIVE people have been sentenced to a total of almost 14 years in prison for tricking their employers out of €100,000 in 2009. They wrote up 48 fake sales contracts with inexistent clients in order to obtain commission on

the sales of books, encyclopaedias and other items. The head of the Palma branch, the head of administration and three salespeople invented 26 clients and 48 sales knowing that they were going to leave the

company and go and work for the competition. Each of them has been sentenced to two years and nine months for fraud, and fines amounting to approximately €1,350, as

Ex police chief reports ‘colleague’ THE former chief of Palma Local Police has reported the current chief superintendent to the prosecutor’s office. Antoni Vera, who was suspended over alleged fixed entrance exams, claims that the chief superintendent, Nicolas Herrero, was in the position for two years, earning one of the highest police salaries, and did not do any work. He also says that Herrero never gave him any reports of what he was doing, and claims he is doing so, so that he cannot be affected by the situation in the future. It is a well-known fact that the two men do not have a good working relationship.

Confessed murderer faces 16 years prison A MAN, 39, is facing 16 years in prison for the confessed murder of his partner last year in Palma. He has also been asked to pay €300,000 and between €25,000 and

€50,000 compensation to the victim’s children and husband, who live in Peru. His defence asked for his acquittal claiming he is mentally disturbed and that he was heavily drunk the day of the events. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the Moroccan man stabbed his partner while she was having a shower at their home in Palma. He then put her in bed, drank caustic soda and took a taxi to the National Police station where he confessed his crime. The man was admitted to the Son Espases hospital in a critical condition, and had his stomach pumped to remove the liquid. An ambulance went to the home of the couple where they found a 33year-old Bolivian woman with no pulse. They tried to resuscitate her, but she died at the scene.

The two reportedly began to argue in the family home and he allegedly began to beat the woman, who defended herself by smashing a plate on his head. Pop icon chooses Spanish designer for next video POP icon Lady Gaga has chosen the creations of a Spanish designer to appear in her next musical video. Lady Gaga will reportedly wear ‘at least’ one of the creations of Eva Soto, a young designer who has been linked to the Samsung EGO catwalk. The delighted designer from Galicia, aged 29, said that she had always admired the style of the pop singer but never imagined that she would notice her designs. She admitted she found it hard to believe the deal which had been

struck following an e-mail which the pop diva herself had sent to the designer, to tell her how much she had liked her ideas and which she says hopes will help her gain international recognition. However, she says that she is trying not to be too excited, despite Lady Gaga telling her that she had selected one of the creations from her collection ‘Entre Lineas’ (Between the Lines).

Gordon Ramsay new TV series OPTOMEN TELEVISION is producing a brand new series to be set in Spain. Gordon Ramsay has been awarded 16 Michelin Stars and is famous for his temper in the kitchen. He has filmed several TV series such as Hell’s Kitchen and The F-Word. He will be sharpening his knives and his tongue to help businesses in need. Filming is due to begin in May and June and will be broadcast on Channel 4 later in the year. The show’s BAFTA-winning producers are looking for restaurants, hotels and B&Bs in Spain who would like some help from Ramsay.

NISSAN’s new medium-duty NT500 lorry is to be produced at its Avila factory. The plant will produce 2,500 units a year for Spain, France, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Italy and Portugal. Fraud or delusion of losing gambler SOME people believe they possess a foolproof betting system. Jose Santamaria of Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) had so much faith in his that he decided to sue Telefonica when he failed to win. Prizes were won by people who were related to each other or lived at the same address and prizewinners were not officially announced, Santamaria said. There was no fraud, Telefonica sources insisted, and only Santamaria complained out of thousands of participants. He also defines himself as a professional gambler with “an infallible system” the same sources said. “When he failed to win he blamed the three companies believing it had to be a swindle.”

Facebook buys the leading text messaging system for $19 billion FACEBOOK has acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion (€13.84 billion) in cash, stock and shares, the social network giant announced in a statement. In their biggest acquisition to date, Facebook has taken on the popular text messaging system, which is used by more than 450 million people. Although many younger people are drifting away from Facebook, WhatsApp is rapidly increasing in popularity. In some markets it is now more prominent than Facebook, with approximately one million new users a day. As of August 2013, some 20 million people were users of WhatsApp in Spain. Together with Spain, Germany, Mexico or India have also reached the 20-million-user milestone. The high cost of SMS text messages and increasing sales of smartphone devices are behind the Spanish success of WhatsApp. Predictions by MassyPhone, an online business message provider for sending WhatsApp messages, say the upward tendency will continue and the text messaging service will have doubled its users in Spain by 2015.

WhatsApp founders, Jan Koum and Brian Action, are now to join the billionaire set in Silicon Valley. The deal includes $4 billion (€2.91 billion) in cash, $12 billion (€8.74 billion) in Facebook

shares and a further $3 billion (€2.18 billion) in stock at a later date. WhatsApp’s brand will be maintained, with its headquarters remaining in Mountain View, California. Jan Koum, WhatsApp CEO, will join Facebook’s Board of Directors, and WhatsApp’s core messaging product and Facebook’s existing Messenger app will continue to operate as standalone applications. Koum said: “WhatsApp’s extremely high user engagement and rapid growth are driven by the simple, powerful and instantaneous messaging capabilities we provide. We’re excited and honoured to partner with Facebook as we continue to bring our product to more people around the world.” In 2012, Facebook purchased photo-sharing app Instagram for $1billion (€728,420,818), which had been their largest purchase to date before the new deal with WhatsApp.

Suspected launderer to be extradited SPAIN has approved the extradition to the US of Arthur Budovsky. Ukrainian-born Budovsky, who gave up US citizenship on marrying a Puerto Rican, is accused of being the ‘principal founder’ of Liberty Reserve. He and seven employees allegedly used the digital currency service which is based in Costa Rica to launder more than $6 billion (€4.36 billion) for criminal organisations. The authorities claim the case is the biggest international laundering operation to be tried by the United States. Budovsky was arrested in May last year when his flight from Morocco stopped over in Madrid. The national high court in Madrid has consented to his extradition on the grounds his alleged crimes took place in the US.

A FASTER than expected rebalancing of the Spanish economy has prompted Moody’s to upgrade the country’s government bond rating to Baa2 to Baa3. The credit rating agency has assigned Spain a positive outlook, and has concurrently upgraded Spain’s short-term rating to Prime-2 from Prime-3. Moody’s based its decision on the improving medium-term economic prospects, underpinned by a rebalancing of the economy away from real-estate investment towards exports. This, according to the agency, should provide for a more sustainable growth trajectory. The growth pattern of the Spanish economy in the third quarter of 2013 has become more balanced, Moody’s argues. Business investment has started to contribute positively and consumer confidence has been improving on the back of an earlier-than-expected stabilisation in the labour market. At the same time, both the corporate and household sectors continue to reduce

Exports also seem to be significantly more diversified than before the crisis, limiting the vulnerability to a growth slowdown in any one region. Improving economic prospects in turn

provide a greater level of confidence that Spain’s still elevated budget deficit can be gradually reduced in the coming years. The 2013 general government budget deficit target of 6.5 per cent of GDP (excluding bank restructuring cost of 0.5 per cent of GDP) is likely to have been reached, and Moody’s also considers this year’s target of a deficit of 5.8 per cent of GDP to be achievable. However, the credit rating agency

expects the public debt ratio will continue to increase for several more years given the persistent budget deficits and relatively moderate nominal GDP growth, before peaking at above 102 per cent of GDP in 2016. Moody’s also expects the unemployment rate to decline only slowly over the coming years, although the labour market reforms have probably lowered the rate of GDP growth necessary to achieve significant net employment creation. The positive outlook on the Baa2 rating reflects Moody’s expectations that improvements in the economy and the government’s fiscal position will continue over the forecast horizon. More specifically, Moody’s expects the economic recovery to gather speed in the course of 2014 with domestic demand, particularly business investment, contributing positively to growth. The rating agency also expects wage moderation to continue, deepening the important competitiveness gains achieved to date.

T’S not just the economic crisis that is affecting the financial situation of women; discrimination between the wages of male and female workers is also contributing to the fact that girls bring home less money per month. According to a report from the European Commission, on average, women in the EU earn around 16 per cent less per hour than men. So picture this, a boy and girl baby are born with equal opportunities, but as current society would have it the educational and career

expectations for boys and girls are different. By the time they grow up, the boy will be earning on average 16.2 per cent more than the girl. Not really fair, is it? Looking specifically at Spain, it has been noted the wage gap between men and women is such

that a woman should have to work 84 days more per year to earn the same salary as a man. Other statistics show that while 2 million part-time female workers in Spain earned €719 per month in 2012, men doing the same job earned a monthly salary of

€804. Curiously, this gender pay gap throughout Europe exists even though women do better at school and university than men. On average, in 2011, 82 per cent of young women reached at least upper secondary school education in the EU, compared to 77 per cent of men. Women

also represent 60 per cent of university graduates in the EU. The implications of such discrimination can be detrimental to women. It means women earn less over their lifetimes; this results in lower pensions and a risk of poverty in old age. The reasons for such discrimination are numerous, and often the result of so-called ‘direct discrimination’ where women are treated less favourably than men. In sectors like health and social work, women make up 80 per cent of all workers and typically have lower wages than those dominated by men, such as banking. According to experts, gender equality is a key for achieving employment growth, competitiveness and economic recovery.

How long might this take and is there anything else we can do? KW (by email) A. Your legal claim to recover money from the fraudulent seller is likely to take two or three years at least. As to ‘anything else’ you can do, it is what you should have done before you bought the land. The most basic point is to have documentary evidence that your seller is the owner of the land. If the land was not

registered at the Property Registry, then the Town Hall ‘Urbanismo’ department will have some information. What does your purchase contract say? If your seller claimed to be the owner at the time, he may be open to charges of fraud as well as civil damages. Finally, my lawyers at Ubeda Retana

Barcelona could be Europe’s leading innovative city A SPANISH city could be the winner of the first European Capital of Innovation award, or iCapital. Barcelona has become a finalist of the award together with Grenoble (France) and Groningen (Netherlands). The three finalists were selected from a shortlist of six contestants where the city of Malaga also competed. An independent panel of experts selected the cities on the basis of their main achievements and policies building the best ‘innovation ecosystem.’ The Catalan city was highlighted “for

introducing the use of new technologies to bring the city closer to citizens.” The winner of the €500,000 prize will be announced at the closing ceremony of the Innovation Convention 2014, Europe’s premier innovation event in Brussels on March 10 and 11. The iCapital Award was launched to encourage cities to stimulate innovation and create a network of cities which can share their best ideas for the future. Cities are judged on the basis of initiatives they have already taken and ideas to enhance innovative capacity.

Appalled at town hall’s home threat I WAS appalled to read the item (Costa del Sol, Issue 1493) about the expats facing the demolition of their Mijas home. This is just typical of how some of the elected bureaucrats run a cart and horse through established legal matters, considering only their selfish political urges, at the expense of expats who they obviously consider as second class citizens not worthy of the respect of their own laws. The O’Riellys have my total support in their planned legal action. From personal experience I know what stress a situation like this can cause; there appears to be no quick legal action possible in Spain, and even though they are clearly in the right and must win any action they and their lawyer take, this whole matter will remain a cloud over their lives unless the threat is withdrawn immediately. It would be great for Euro Weekly News to start a campaign against this evil and illegal action. I am sure you will have the support of not only many expats but also many Spanish nationals who not only make their living from the development of the Costa del Sol but are decent human beings who strongly resent the actions of a small number of their fellow citizens. Horrified I READ the article concerning the O’Riellys’ home with horror. How could these evil politicians ruin the life of a couple by threatening to destroy the home they have created from an old building, having made sure they complied with all the relevant Spanish laws and even bought the property from a judge! She told me they’re not a charity and if they were to make it cheaper they would have “an influx of injured animals brought in to them.” I felt this was such a callous attitude as vets should be caring towards animals, not just those who have owners willing to pay. Off-plan plea IN response to Kath Williams’ letter (Issue 1493), as she requested I wondered if she would take on board the topic of money owing to clients who paid for off-plan properties. Whilst I sympathise with the SOHA members, there are umpteen more whose life savings have been put into off-plan

properties and who now have to rent. Our solicitor has been less than useless but I have proof that we are owed €35,000. I would welcome a chat with anyone interested in this subject. Bad attitude I FOUND a kitten lying by the side of the road which had been run over and left to die. I managed to pick up the stray kitten and take it to the vet. It was badly injured and sadly there was no choice but to put her to sleep. The bill they gave me, €162, I thought was extortionate considering that I had rescued it from a busy road and brought it to them for help. I went back to query the bill but the owner/manager refused to speak to me, so it was left up to the receptionist.

I FELT sad and angry reading Vicki McLeod’s column (Family Matters, Mallorca, Issue 1493). What happened to responsibility and participation? At 11 and 12, my sister and I were helping with chores around the house, including ironing, setting the table, preparing the vegetables, ‘making’ the fire (coal), and the beds, etc. In other words, our mother was preparing us to run a household. We could knit and sew and cared for our pet dogs and could do a little cooking. But this was the normal way of living. We would have been ashamed to have our clothes and things scattered all over the floor. We did not look upon this as tiresome, forced labour. It was a lesson and we had rewards. Our mother regularly took my sister and me on excursions for the day to the hills and woods of North Wales where we played games and had our picnic or sometimes we had afternoon tea in the garden of a beautiful hotel. We also went to the seaside and the fair, and when father was home (he was a merchant seaman) we would go as a family to the ‘pictures’ or the theatre. I know most young people have ‘everything’ these days and have a ‘faster’ lifestyle, but responsibility for one’s actions should never be ignored. Y name is Natasha and I have been the Manager of the Euro Weekly News in Mallorca for just over a year. My previous roles always involved customer service and sales but never had I experienced such a different environment as when I joined EWN. The buzz and reward I get from working for the newspaper is truly unique. This last year has gone so very quickly and my personal life has moved in line with my professional life, in a direction that no one could have predicted. I have made some amazing friends, learnt so many things about advertising, design and what works. I have even managed to squeeze in buying my own place! I work with a great team that is professional, fast moving and dynamic. TO paraphrase Fern Kinney’s song: ‘She walked into our lives and now she’s taken over ….’ Well that is really what has happened with Natasha and the EWN. She came to mainland Spain for training and my initial reaction was “oh no Gob on legs,” too pretty - no staying power - the Mallorca office has seen them come and go - here is another one. Well, after 20 years in the business, how wrong can you be. Natasha proved me wrong - irrefutably wrong - and how the business people and the EWN in Mallorca have benefited. I started to doubt my first impression on the second day of the residential training course. After so many years the hotel, as a matter of courtesy, drops me a line advising me if anyone is abusing our hospitality so to speak.The next day I did indeed receive a telephone call from the manager, but it was about another trainee. In fact Natasha had spent the night in her room studying her prospectus and the history of the company. It paid off - she was top of the class for the rest of the training. From there she has just gone from strength to strength. Her passion for her clients knows no bounds, as I found out on many occasions when she is fighting tooth and nail and threatening to place my iPad where it is not destined to fit - all because she wants to break our rules because it benefits her clients. At the end of the day that is all she is concerned about - her clients come first and foremost, as they should.Her energy is boundless and as the Managing Director of the EWN Media Group I can say that since Natasha has been on board I have aged seven years in one, but I sure as hell wish I had the ability to clone her. Children need discipline H

e that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chastenth him betimes.” Proverbs 13:24. This is the bible extract thought to be the origin of the modern day ‘spare the rod and spoil the child.’ To me the original is a great deal more subtle than its latter definition. So many parents these days couldn’t care less or simply have better things to do than to discipline their offspring. We see the results of this selfish complacency all around us. Spoiled brats who have had everything lavished on them simply to keep them as quiet and ‘unseen’ as possible. These are the types who, in their early ‘tattooed’ teens, fall out of expensive clubs in the early hours - pour scorn on those less fortunate and make a mockery of the ‘Brit Awards.’ At the other end of the scale the unchastised victims of these self-serving parents can be seen roaming the streets terrorizing neighbour-

WHY is being a feminist seen as a bad thing? Why is that? Women get criticised for pretty much everything. If we’re being strong: we’re harpees. If we’re weak: we’re girlies. We shouldn’t be overweight because that would mean we weren’t attractive, but we shouldn’t try to lose weight because that would be us bowing to the media. It’s a mess, and it’s a minefield. How difficult is it to just be yourself, and when and how do you figure that out? You have to learn through your own experiences and other people’s teaching and examples. I wish there were another word, I’d like to go for ‘peopleist,’ I’m all for people doing the best they can do and not being mean to each other. Is that possible? Okay, just wishing out loud there. Every year for the past four years I have been one of the organisers of

DISCIPLINE: It is your duty as a parent to instil. hoods and looting shops. All of these youngsters have one thing in common; they are basically unloved, by uncaring parents, who simply can’t be bothered. Children need discipline. They cry out for guidance and boundaries in the bewildering, frightening, almost unfathomable circumstances most of them have manifested in. To not give them what they crave is tantamount to child abuse in its worse possible form. If you truly love your children, then it is your absolute duty as a parent to instil discipline. If this means a slap on the bum or the back of the legs then, providing it is a last resort, then I am all for it. What you are actually showing them is that you

happen to care. I don’t mean, I hasten to add, severe beatings delivered in anger with the sole purpose of causing pain. This type of violence only leads to more aggression and even less respect. I’m talking about the odd proverbial clip around the ear of the type delivered by the

bobby on the beat, when he packed an erring youngster off back home (good ol’ days or what!). I have had six children, all of whom got a clip when I felt it was deserved. None of them have chastised me for it in later years. The eldest four have all turned out to be confident and respectable adults and I have no reason, God willing, to expect any less from my two 13-year-olds. The fact they are truly loved is the most important requirement of a child. Give ‘em a clip, then, when the time is right, give ‘em a big hug and a kiss. Keep the faith. An issue of colour NOBODY is surprised that Leapy Lee has so few black friends, that’s commensurate with being a racist and a bigot. His weekly rambles regularly feature a racist undertone, although he has a platform and an opportunity to voice positive comments to a wide audience, he instead insists on bitter and vulgar generalisations based on racial and cultural differences. Colour is only skin deep, beneath we are all the same bearing only whatever differences that define us as individuals. Family Matters UNITE AND SHARE: Because we learn from each other in the end. the International Women’s Day celebrations in Mallorca. And each year the event is different and gets better every time. Traditional burying of the sardine

THERE are many weird and wonderful traditions on Mallorca from battles on the beaches to demons after dark but one of the strangest events steeped in history is the annual ‘Burial of the Sardine.’ The fiesta takes place on Shrove Tuesday at the end of the carnival celebrations and is a solemn affair complete with fake priests and weeping widows. The funeral procession of a fake fish made out of wood or plaster is accompanied by suitably grim music. At the end the fish is usually burnt and as it goes up in flames the party begins! The ceremony is not unique to the island but takes place all over Spain and the artist Francisco Goya was so taken with it that he made it the subject of one of his oil paintings ‘El entierro de la

On Mallorca one of the biggest parades is in the little village of Son Cario near Marratxi where people are packed… like… well sardines… to watch the fishy affair. Others are held in Inca, Portol and Llucmajor. So after the sardine is toast that is it till Easter you would think. Forty days of fasting and absence during Lent is called for… no parties, no fiestas no nada. When were your best memories? Recent research by a US university says that most retired people think they have had the best memories of their life by the time they are 25.

OBERT BROWNLEE is a retiree living in Oria (Almeria). Like all of us would probably say, the 66-year-old Robert said: “There have been good bits and bad bits throughout my life.” Yet he added that life toward the end of his 30s was much better than before 25. He stated, “Around 38-years-old I began 25 years of real happiness. The best memory was meeting my second wife at 38. For me, life began nearer to 40 than 25.” Dave Palmer-Richardson, aged 48, is the owner of Oasis Bar in Benijofar (Alicante). He said you don’t necessarily have the best memories before the age of 25, but he feels as you get

older you reminisce more: “I think psychologically as you get older, you look back more and with fonder memories. You have got to live in the moment.” Helen Rainier, aged 56, works at a travel agency in Puerto de la Torre (Malaga). She said that while she certainly has fond memories of her younger years, she doesn’t agree with the survey. “I had so much more wisdom and life experience at 40 that allowed me more perspective on life. This perspective has given me better moments overall after 40 than before 25.” Care worker Lyn Blake, on holiday in Torrevieja (Alicante) from Sunderland,

UK, said she disagrees with the survey. She said that she had better memories after having reached 25. Now in her 50’s, Lyn said: “My best moments were having my children and I didn’t have my first until I was 31. So whilst I had some great times in my 20’s, I certainly don’t think they will be the best in my lifetime.” Another retiree, Brian Crook, aged 75 lives in Rambla de Oria (Almeria). Brian shared with us that “my best memory was moving to Spain when I retired at the age of 50. I have moved around a bit since then. When I was 25 life was miserable, really.” Moving to Spain has been a big ‘happiness factor’ for Brian: “My enjoyment really started in Spain. I have been in Spain 26 years and love the sun.”

Sweet taste for ‘one of a kind’ Spanish beer AN artisan brewer from the Axarquia (Malaga) has come up with a ‘one of a kind’ beer to honour the region’s sweet past. Velez-Malaga based Murex has crafted a beer which has a 20 per cent content of sugar cane juice. While other brands apparently use sugar coming from sugar canes to colour their drink, Murex is reportedly the only brewer to actually use the ingredient during the fermentation process. “We obtain a very interesting flavour while paying homage to the industrial past of the Axarquia, traditionally linked to

sugar production,” their creators said. Their name is also a wink to the region’s past as it is the name of a mollusc the Phoenician civilisation that settled in Velez-Malaga obtained a dye from. The product has earned a ‘Sabor a Malaga’ seal issued by the Malaga provincial government to promote local products. But the company aims for a bigger promotion and has plans to open a sales point where clients would be able to see the brewing process before tasting the beer.

“We would like people to enjoy the smell of malt and the whole brewing process,” cofounder Israel Berjillos said. Murex brews five beer varieties in its factory, which has the capacity to produce an estimated 390,000 litres per year. For the time being, the company is producing 1,000 litres of beer per week to be distributed in gourmet shops and catering businesses in Malaga. The trouble with telly... left high and dry A

S far as I can gather, life has been tough on expats in parts of the Balearic region of late, what with the realignment of satellites in the sky, leaving us high and dry in the telly department. Or stuck with the local offerings. Now, as much as I love the sun, sea, mountains and relaxed life here in Spain, I struggle to come to terms with their TV. Perhaps, this is because the Spaniards all have such an active social life and more hobbies than you could shake a remote control at, which renders the concept of TV of little value. But as a part-time couch potato, I love slouching on the sofa with a glass of ‘tinto’ in one hand, large handful of salt and vinegar crisps in the other, watching shows like Dexter, Sherlock or Dr Who on boxsets purchased from that giant online retailer with a Brazilian river name, since downloads take three days and we are still officially trying to cope with

Spanish TV - for the sake of learning the language. But herein lies the problem because either the programme on offer happens to be in Catalan, which is one step too far for my linguistic abilities, or it is a foreign programme, dubbed into Spanish using the same two voice-overs for every single character - the male voice sounds as if it belongs to a cow-lassoing gringo with a major moustache, while the female voice is invariably that of a 50-yea-old who smokes 40-a-day, even when the characters portrayed are in their late teens. My suspension of disbelief just can’t take it. Then there are the local offerings - talent shows, game shows and news, along with

the dramatic soaps: The aim here seems to be to speak incredibly fast, which means I resort to the Spanish subtitles to be able to follow. I do feel sorry for the person (or computer) in charge of creating these subtitles -

because they clearly can’t keep up. The relevant text appears several scenes too late, which can lead to all sorts of confusion, and often bears little resemblance to what is being said. So, I think I will soon be

throwing in the towel and seeking out some professional satellite-honing help to take in British TV. Or perhaps I will join the rest of the Spaniards in all the riveting activities that keep them from the small screen.

Scandinavian interest in Galician traditional houses SCANDINAVIANS have overtaken the British as the main buyers of traditional stone houses in rural Galicia. Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish buyers are acquiring abandoned houses in small villages to restore them, always respecting the local architecture. They look in Galicia for

milder weather than in their countries of origin, along with a peace and quietness which is rarely found on southern Spain’s costas German and Dutch buyers are also reported to be buying properties in Spain’s Celtic region. They are taking over a market that until recently mainly attracted

British people. But the number of British clients has decreased, supposedly due to the financial crisis. The overall number of potential buyers has nevertheless decreased to levels registered in 2007. Numbers are so low some estate agents

claim they only receive one client per week. The average stone house buyer is described as a person with ecological awareness that looks for abandoned properties to restore. Their work often brings new life to secluded villages that would otherwise end up disappearing.

Non-payment of residents’ community fees on the increase

NON-PAYMENTS of residents’ community fees stood at 19 per cent in 2013, the Association for the Promotion of Rental and Access to Property (Arrenta) revealed. The debt resulting from this situation went up to €1.9 billion, double the figure of four years ago.

NEARLY 80 young sailors took part in the Ibiza Dinghy Sailing Championship that concluded on Sunday after two weekends of competition. Only boats from the Optimist, Laser 4.7 and Europe classes were able to take part in the event, organised by the Ibiza Sailing Club. The last day of competition was marked by south winds of about eight knots, which allowed for two stages to take place. Lucas Vetter, from the Santa Eulalia Sailing Club, claimed victory in the Optimist class. Vetter prevailed over his more direct opponents, sailors from the Sant Antoni Sailing Club Nacho Garcia and Carlos Hortensias, who ended up second and third respectively. Winner of the Optimist B class was Vicente Ribas, whereas Alejandro Hortensisus won in the Optimist C class. Victor Albert was the champion of the Laser 4.7 class. The sailor from the Ibiza Sailing Club was joined on the podium by Raquel Alandete, from the Sant Antoni Sailing Club, and his fellow team member Joan Cardona. The French manufacturer unveiled the New Twingo, with the aim of rekindling the innovative spirit of the 1992 model. The brand’s engineers and designers took their inspiration from the original Twingo and the iconic Renault 5. Their objective was to create a roomier and more agile city car, and this is how the idea of switching to a rear-mounted engine took shape.
