Fish farms and Moorish baths
CALPE, Javea and Campello all have shoreline archaeological remains known as the Queen’s Baths (Baños de la Reina). A recently-opened exhibition at Calpe’s Ajuntament Vell focuses on the three sites and their background, with particular emphasis on Campello. The Campello complex L’Illeta de la Reina covers a 4,000-square-metre site and was first inhabited during the Bronze Age. It was used by the Iberians,
Romans and Moors. As in Calpe and Javea, the Illeta incorporates fish farms built by the Romans. However, later generations believed the remains to have been the private baths of a Moorish queen. The exhibition, which continues until March 30, has been organised by Alicante City’s Archaeological Museum (MARQ) in collaboration with Calpe’s Museo de Historia. It continues until March 30.

Reparation 500 years later MODIFICATIONS to Spain’s Civil Code now allow Sephardic Jews to claim Spanish nationality. Alicante Province’s Sephardim welcomed the central government’s decision to grant dual nationality to the descendants of Jews driven out by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. “Spain is our homeland. We were expelled from the country where we were born,” said Armando Azubel. Approximately 250 Sephardim live in the province, descendants of Jews forced to settle in North Africa.
They returned in the 20th century following the independence of Morocco and Algeria, explained the president of the Tarbut Sefarad association, Francisco Sempere. The Sephardic community is anxious to regain the nationality wrested from them centuries ago. “They feel Spanish and the Ladino or mediaeval Spanish they still speak is proof of it, together with lullabies, songs and recipes handed down for generations,” Sempere said.
Hollywood star in Spain for filming
H
OLLYWOOD star Alec Baldwin is in Spain for the filming of the fifth instalment of Spain’s best-known and most profitable film saga,
‘Torrente’. This film has a budget of €8.5 million and filming is due to continue until March, also in Madrid and the Dominican Republic. Although little more is known, Baldwin is playing the villain of the piece, and is accompanied in Spain by his wife, Hilaria Thomas, whose parents are Spanish and allegedly convinced him to take part in the film. Also with them is their daughter, Carmen Gabriela, born in August last year. The Torrente films are dark comedies written, directed and starring Santiago Segura, who plays a lazy, rude, drunk, rightwing cop in Madrid. The first film was released in 1998 and made more than €3 million at the box office; the most recent was released in 2011 and made more than €19.5 million. Each of the films has included numerous Spanish actors and celebrities. The fifth instalment began filming late last year and is due to be released this October. One of the famous faces appearing in the film will be bullfighter Jesulin de Ubrique. It had been rumoured that Santiago Segura was also trying to

Javea school one of best COLEGIO GRAULL in Javea has been ranked as one of the Valencian Community’s best schools. Increasing opposition to Norwegian home RESIDENTS in Altea’s Montemolar area have called for the council to debate a geriatric home planned for the area. Oslo City Hall was granted planning permission last September to build on the 11,760 square metres of pinewoods that it owns in Montemolar. The 50-room building, with three storeys and two basement floors, would cover an area of 7,440 square metres in an area zoned as rural land. The Montemolar residents’ association want a review of the planning permission. The association has also asked Altea Council to

Ex-councillor found dead in Campello ALICIA ZAMBRANA, a former councillor in Lorca (Murcia), has been found dead in Campello. Her body was discovered in her Muchavista apartment by a relative. NEWS Chocolate pick-me-up CHOCOLATE is the best antidepressant in the world, some claim. It contains theobromine, a bitter alkaloid of the cacao plant, and a word with the literal meaning of ‘food of the gods’, according to Vicente Clemente. Clemente, product manager for Valor, the Villajoyosa-based chocolate maker, was addressing students at Alicante University. It is an effective stimulant and antidepressant that is healthier, more effective and more natural than Prozac, Clemente said. “It’s not necessary to take Prozac. Eat chocolate instead.” There are no contraindications, he claimed. “Cacao stimulates the central nervous system, although its benefits are not noticed immediately but felt long-term.”

Learning about Calpe’s marine life CALPE’S Sailing School pupils have been learning about the marine life inhabiting local waters. The talk organised by Calpe Yacht Club and international group Voluns, was given by the non-government organisation Xaloc whose experts told the young sailors about the whales, dolphins and turtles living off the Calpe coast. Whales more than 20 metres long have often
been sighted, they heard, while this part of the Mediterranean coast is home to three different types of dolphin. The bottlenose is the most common of these, which live permanently off the north Alicante coast. They communicate with other communities of dolphins living off the Balearic Islands, following the same Ibiza Channel route that is taken by yachts competing in the Peñon de Ifach trophy, the children heard.

A pyrrhic victory VALENCIA-BORN Isabel Monros has regained custody of her three children. They were returned to their Mexican father last year after a Spanish court ruled that she broke the law by bringing them to live in her home town, Alboraya (Valencia). Despite recovering custody, Monros must remain in Mexico so that her ex-husband can visit the children. The victory is tantamount to defeat, said the mother’s legal representative in Spain. She cannot return to Spain with the children but has no means of support in Mexico as her ex-husband pays no maintenance for her and the children.

Market plans in doubt DOUBTS are growing that Elche’s new municipal market will ever be built. Not only are there Moorish remains from Elche’s past below the site in the Plaza de la Fruta, but also an air raid shelter from
the 1936-1939 Civil War. If the city hall halts the project to protect the archaeological discoveries, the question arises as to who should pay for the excavations carried out so far.

Under the original agreement, the company awarded the contract to develop the market site agreed to pay for the excavations that started in January and continue into April. If the plan does not go ahead, the €170,000 cost could revert to the city hall and it will be necessary to re-examine the tender agreement, sources said. The possibility also exists of going ahead with the new market whilst respecting the archaeological remains, the town hall has pointed out.

Motorcycling star arrested SPANISH motorcyclist Hector Barbera has been arrested after ignoring a driving ban.

‘Flying’ football dog becomes world star GOOFY, the dog that was allegedly thrown from the stands during a football match in Olula del Rio has turned into a world star. Media in countries all round the world from the UK to Honduras have picked up on the surreal event, reported in last week’s Euro Weekly News, when a fan allegedly tried to throw the pooch, who was the pet of another spectator, at the referee. Goofy was reported to be hurt during the incident in which he fell between two and three metres, but has now
been given a clean bill of health. Clemente Domene is the fan alleged to be responsible. He faces charges of alleged animal abuse and violent behaviour at a sporting event. Upset by the impact that this incident has had at national and international level, the fan of the Comarca del Marmol Club said the dog’s ‘flight’ was the result of an accident and that under no circumstances was it intentional. “We were in the stands all the time playing with
the dog,” he said. When the referee went to the visitors bench to ask several players to leave the field, Clemente approached the railings to see what was happening. “People started screaming and the dog got scared and jumped out of my arms,” claimed the 48-year-old from Macael. Nevertheless, Clemente wanted to apologise to the club, the referee, the fans and everyone who had been offended by what happened during the Regional Preferente League match.

Wage freeze for millions SPAIN’S biggest companies froze salaries for 4.35 million employees last year. Spain’s Minister of Labour Fatima Bañez read these figures without pessimism. “After a long period of intense salary increases, the Spanish economy is carrying out vital adjustments to correct significant imbalances,” Bañez said. She refuted suggestions that this was deliberate on the government’s part. “Nobody could claim that Spain has a model of low salaries,” the minister added. “That strategy is doomed to failure.” Official statistics relating to salaries are not particularly revealing and the government does little to clarify them, analysts claim.
The Hacienda (tax office) figures are reliable but there are 12 million wage-earners and they reveal only the earnings of the 4.35 million workers employed by companies whose turnover exceeds €6 million a year. These also slashed 163,000 jobs last year. Hacienda pointed out that there was a general strike in 2012 on November 15 and civil servants lost their Christmas bonus that year. These factors combined to make 2013 look better than it was with a 0.6 salary increase in the last quarter. Otherwise last year’s freeze would instead have meant a fall in earnings for those 4.35 million workers.

Spanish university graduates facing problems in the labour market SPANISH university graduates are having problems finding their place in the labour market. Almost 40 per cent of them hold a post for which they are overqualified, a report by the Ministry of Education has revealed. Of the students graduated in 2012, 22.8 per cent of them have a job that requires a lesser qualification, whereas the job of 16.8 per cent of them requires no qualification. This situation is more seen with graduates in Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.
The report on the Spanish university system also reveals that graduates don’t have the type of contract expected for their qualification; 26.1 per cent of them have a full-time temporary contract, while 9.6 per cent have a part-time temporary contract. Just 8.4 per cent of Spanish university graduates have an indefinite contract, but only part-time. Unemployment rates among graduate students in Spain also show discouraging results. In 2011, 9.7 per cent of unemployed men
in Spain aged between 25 and 64 held a university degree. Among women this figure went up to 11 per cent. This clearly contrasts with the average unemployment rate of graduates within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which was of 4.2 and 5 per cent respectively. But figures are even worse for younger people, with 16.2 per cent of graduates aged between 25 and 32 being unemployed, more than double in the OECD (6.8 per cent).

Spain 49th in 2014 Index of Economic Freedom SPAIN is the 49th freest economy in the world, the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom published by The Wall Street Journal and The Heritage Foundation says. This concept, defined by the report as the fundamental right of every human to control his or her own labour and property, is measured based on 10 quantitative and qualitative factors. Spain’s economic freedom score is of 67.2 points, 0.8 points lower than last year when it ranked 46th. This is mainly due to declines in the management of government spending, business freedom, and labour freedom. These elements, the annual index points out, have outweighed small improvements in trade freedom and freedom from corruption. Within the European Union, Spain ranks 22nd, behind Switzerland (first), Ireland (second) and the United Kingdom (fifth).
WORLD ECONOMY: Spain’s economic freedom scored 67.2 points. It is, however, placed in a better position than bigger economic powers like France (33rd), or Italy (35th). Europe’s score is still above world averages, but the index editors point out that it “has been undergoing tumultuous and uncertain times,” such as the sovereign debt crisis affecting the Eurozone. “Europe’s overall economic freedom rating remains undermined by weak scores in the management of public
spending, reflecting the cost of expanding government services and transfer payments that plainly hinder both productivity growth and dynamic job creation,” the editors wrote. In the 20 years this index has been published, the economic freedom score of Spain has improved by 4.4 points. The greatest achievements have been accomplished in the areas of market openness
and freedom from corruption, the report indicates. On a more negative note, the index points out that Spain continues to score below the world average in fiscal freedom, government spending and labour freedom. According to James Roberts, the index shows “that when economic freedom increases, global economy grows and poverty decreases.” Roberts, a researcher at The Heritage Foundation, made this claim during the launch of the index in Spain organised by think-tank FAES. “Countries with higher levels of economic freedom substantially outperform others in aspects such as economic growth, per-capita incomes, health care, education, protection of the environment, reduction of poverty and general welfare,” he explained. Roberts was joined by the Secretary of State for Trade, Jaime Garcia-Legaz, who
recognised Spain’s economy has relatively worsened. In that sense, Garcia-Legaz pointed out that the Spanish regions should take additional measures to control the public expenditure. “Spain needs to make an additional effort in budgetary consolidation and public expenditure reduction but, mainly because of the current distribution and the level of expenditure, it is the Autonomous Communities which have a longer way ahead than the State Administration or local administrative bodies,” he stated. Finally, Garcia-Legaz mentioned the two-year time lag that comes together with the methodology of the index. This means the 2014 edition analyses data up to June 2012, and that further measures taken by the Spanish Government to improve the economy will be shown in the index from next year.

Radiotherapy needs to be nearer home I HAVE recently finished radiotherapy at the Hospital Clinic Benidorm, referred there by the Denia Hospital. Firstly I found everyone at both hospitals very friendly and caring and wish to thank them. My only problem was I found the travelling from Javea to Benidorm every day quite tiring, also quite expensive even using my own car, but finding someone to drive me. I talked to another patient who travelled from Pego every day. I wondered why Denia Hospital did not have this facility considering the number of people being treated for various cancer problems. I realise it is probably a question of funding such a machine and wondered if it were possible for some of the charities and associations to channel some of the money raised to fund such a project. I was lucky that my treatment did not run into many weeks but some of the people I spoke to were having to go for up to 27 weeks. Please could this be considered bearing in mind the number of people of all nationalities who require treatment. Patricia, Javea (Alicante)

We own two rescue dogs, and in the three-and-a-half years we have lived here I have also rescued eight puppies that were left out in the sun to die and were involved in the rescue of an adult dog. I have tried talking with Spanish dog owners. “It doesn’t matter” was the man’s reply when I asked why a dog in very poor condition was always on a leash, in all weather. Another looked at me blankly when I suggested that it was unacceptable for her dog to have been barking all night.

Benidorm is a holiday resort, people spend hard-earned money to holiday here and have not come here to behave as if they were sat at home in the UK. In 1950 Benidorm was a fishing village, and has grown into a business which generates a lot of wealth. Brits who decide to move to Spain, I’m presuming Jane Morrison is one, and make a home in the epicentre of a holiday resort should have more sense. All the Spanish that I have met who make a living

Be careful WE live just outside Salares (not far from Competa) and we think we might have been visited by bogus gas men. We had three phone calls from ‘a gas company’ saying they were coming to inspect our installation. We were suspicious but let them in and when they started to tell us what was wrong we pointed out that we had a legal revision and if there was a problem we would use our own plumber, who had been in the house only a few days earlier and replaced one of the pipes they said was illegal. They left but not before I had taken a photo of their very old van which was painted in orange and white but had no lettering. People need to be
Barbaric practice IT was good to see your article on the subject of Female Genital Mutilation. It is a practice which has always horrified me and it is good to see that the Spanish authorities are making an effort to try to rule it out amongst families from countries where it is common practice. It may be traditional, but it is also barbaric, and women need to know the threats to which they are exposing their daughters. A good education for both boys and girls, in most cases, would be much more effective in making sure young women remain ‘pure’ until marriage, if this is what their culture ordains. Most importantly, teach men to control their sexual urges and respect the women and girls. I have ordered one of the bracelets you mentioned from www.mundocooperante.org and if the money is just one step closer to preventing a girl from being mutilated, it will have been worth it. FINANCE Spain’s asset reporting law applies to anyone who is resident in Spain and owns assets outside the country worth €50,000 or more. The deadline is 31st March each year. We receive many queries from people who are not sure if they need to file a report or not. Residency is an important starting point. The obligation to report your overseas assets on Modelo 720 is only imposed on Spanish residents. If you own property here but are not resident, it does not apply to you, but you need to be 100% sure you do not fulfil any of the residency criteria. Tax residency in Spain can be more complex than you realise. Many people believe they are not resident but actually are, and so should be paying tax. This issue is even more critical with the reporting law, since the consequences for failing to report are much higher than ever before – you can lose more than the value of the asset. The government is also aware that some people who meet the residency criteria choose not to declare themselves as such. The tax agency has been cracking

It can also use information received from abroad under exchange of financial information agreements. If you were resident in Spain in 2012, you should have submitted Form 720 last year. You then only need to report again if the value of an asset increased by €20,000 or
more, or if you bought or sold an asset. If you became resident in 2013, you need to make your first declaration now. You report the value of assets as at 31st December 2013. With bank accounts you also need to include the average balance over the last three months of 2013, and with property the acquisition value. If you became resident this year, you will need to report assets as at 31st December 2014, so your first deadline is 31st March 2015. Tax residency in Spain You are resident for tax purposes - and so liable for income, capital gains and wealth taxes on your worldwide assets and subject to Spanish succession tax rules - if any of the following apply. • You spend more than 183 days
here in one calendar year. • Your “centre of economic interests” is in Spain. • Your “centre of vital interests” is in Spain - i.e. your spouse and/or your minor children live here, even if you spend under 183 days here. There is no split year treatment in Spain. You are either resident or not resident for the whole year. You may be regarded as UK resident at the same time, in which case you need to look at the UK/Spain Tax Treaty rules. If you own property and spend much time here each year, you need to know where you stand, tax wise, so you can establish the best way forward. With specialist advice you could structure your assets to be tax efficient in Spain, and so that you need not worry about Form 720.

In 19th-century America, civil war continues to rage between the Confederate south and the federal United States. Both sides grow tired of the war, but one issue keeps federal leader Abraham Lincoln (Daniel DayLewis) from forming peace the South's insistence on the use of slavery. The basis of the non-profit organisation is that while selfless service is great in adults, children can and should be conditioned to help their communities. Is security going too far? SECURITY at Heathrow airport in the UK recently confiscated a Toy Story Woody the cowboy doll because he was carrying a miniature gun.

NGELA WILLIAMS, aged 57, from La Marina Pueblo, Alicante, believes the authorities may have gone a bit too far in confiscating the Woody toy: “It is a bit over the top and they should be able to tell if it is just a toy or something more. I would worry now about taking my grandkids to the airport and what toys they were carrying.” Carl Barnett, aged 69, from urbanisation La Marina, Alicante, however, believes it is right that the authorities are extra cautious: “It is sad but in today’s climate it is better to be safe

We are all for security, but common sense should prevail if they are satisfied it is a toy. In our opinion, the more security there is, the better.”

I haven’t flown in a long time but obviously airport security is generally very important. I was at Stansted airport and security was ridiculous. The queues to get through were about a mile long. Yes, there should be checks, but some of the security personnel seem to be jobsworths who take things to extremes.”

THE first museum in the world totally devoted to Manchego cheese is to open its doors in Manzanares (Castilla La Mancha) in March. The culinary gallery is set to put new energy into the town with a series of activities revolving around the food, including tastings or screenings on how to make it. The Manzanares Manchego Cheese Museum, as it’s officially known, will be located in the farmyard of a historical building in the town’s historic centre. It will share the premises with a regional museum that will host a permanent sculpture and painting exhibition, as well as the winning works of the Manzanares

National Painting Competition. Following the opening of the museum, the Manzanares Town Hall has organised the first National Manchego Cheese Fair, to be held from April 11 to 13. It will feature cheeses from Galicia, Asturias, Cataluña and, of course, Castilla La Mancha. This is not the first culinary museum to open in Spain this year. As reported by the Euro Weekly News, Europe’s first vermouth museum will open in Reus (Cataluña) in April. It will feature 1,800 vermouth brands, with more than 800 bottles coming from 50 different countries including China, Canada, Australia, Japan and Argentina.

Classical music may have an influence on flavour of fine wine A NEW research will appeal to those who appreciate both fine wine and classical music, as results indicate a link between the two. Fine wines were tested by a group of participants both with and without classical music being played, to discover whether the multi sensory percep-tion of taste and hearing affected the flavour of the drink. The results, published in Flavour journal, the suggest that wine writers may be justified in comparing wines to pieces of music or a musical style. In the experiment participants were tested with different wines, with and without music and asked to rate the perceived sweetness, acidity, alcohol level, fruitiness and enjoyment of the wine. It appears listening to the appropriate classical music can enhance experience of wine drinking. Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No 1 in D major turned out to be a very good match for the Chateau Margaux 2004 (red wine).
Meanwhile, Mozart’s Flute Quartet in D major, K285 was found to be a good match for the Pouilly Fume (white wine). When participants tested the wine with music, they enjoyed the experience more than tasting it in silence. According to the report, these findings ‘might provide the social drinker with useful clues about sensory properties they should expect to get in a wine when tasting it.

Food of the week: super broccolini BROCCOLINI, a cross between broccoli and Chinese kale, is this week’s super food. Known in Spain as ‘bimi,’ this green vegetable is often confused with baby broccoli due to its small florets and thinner stalks. But the truth is the hybrid might be healthier than the original vegetable. Studies say broccolini florets have a higher content in dietary fibre, proteins and minerals than regular broccoli. Specifically, they have more calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese

Broccolini also has more glucosinolates, a natural class of organic compounds that act as anti-cancer agents. In fact, a study suggests broccolini can be used in novel anticancer therapeutic strategies due to its inhibitory effect on human colon cancer cells.
Broccolini strengths are also found in the kitchen. Cooking it is really simple, since the whole thing can be eaten after washing it. It can be sauteed in olive oil and garlic, steamed or even battered and deep-fried as Japanese tempura. The green vegetable was originally developed in 1993 in Japan, and was sold for the first time the following year with the name ‘asparation.’ It later arrived in the US and Europe, where it is mainly known as broccolini.
More olive oil produced, but less sold MORE olive oil was produced in Spain during the first quarter of the 20132014 campaign, but less quantity has been sold. Temporary figures released by the Spanish Agency for Food Information and Control (AICA) reveal that 1.23 million tonnes of olive oil were produced in this period. This is a 124 per cent increase in relation to the previous year, despite weather conditions delaying the harvesting of the olive. Olive oil sales don’t seem to match production figures, as only 498,200
tonnes of oil were sold in the same period according to AICA. This is a 29 per cent increase in relation to the previous campaign, which still leaves room for optimism. The volume supply of olive oil is of 1.05 million tonnes, a 1.6 per cent increase. Of them, 892,300 tonnes are stocked in oil mills, whereas 167,500 tonnes can be found in olive oil refineries and bottling factories.

AS foreign investors are starting to flood into the Spanish market, it is Spanish money that has helped fuel London’s property boom. Spanish investors see London property as a ‘safe haven’ for their money, research from Said Business School at the University of Oxford proves. Professor Tarun Ramadorai and Dr Cristian Badarinza found a direct correlation between economic and political risks in Spain
and house price changes in particular areas of the British capital. The researchers found that recent economic difficulties have left those with capital to invest avoiding the risks of the economy at home and turning to highprofile foreign cities like London as a ‘safe haven.’ This goes a long way towards explaining why London house prices have continued to rise at a disproportionate rate compared with those in
the rest of the UK and sheds light on the wellknown fact that capital appears to flow ‘uphill’ from relatively poor to relatively rich countries. Ironically, Spain topped a poll by Rightmove Overseas of places British buyers want a holiday home. The Mediterranean country’s weather and relaxing lifestyle still attract buyers despite the problem suffered by some owners buying ‘illegal’ property and the financial crisis.

Freemason climbs White Sentinel for charity A FREEMASON’S quest to climb the highest mountain in the Americas has raised more than €5,000 for the homeless in Alicante Province. Thomas Ronning, from Alfaz del Pi, is a local Freemason and recently reached the summit of Mount Aconcagua (White Sentinel) in the Andes mountain range in Argentina, scaling the ‘Polish Traverse’, which took 20 days. In doing so, he has
raised over €5,000 for the 2014 Valencian Provincial Feemasonry Charity in aid of purchasing an ambulance and a soon-to-be-presented mobile day centre for the homeless for the Cruz Roja in Alicante. The mobile day centre is believed to be the first of its kind in Spain and will attend to the poor and destitute on a routine basis at dedicated points within the community.

Luxury car sales leave the financial crisis behind

THE luxury car sector in Spain seems to have left the financial crisis behind in the light of the latest sales figures. In January, luxury car and official vehicle sales increased by 46.2 and 41 per cent respectively. This is despite these models not being eligible for the PIVE incentive programme. These figures continue with the tendency started in December 2013, when sales of both models increased by 6.5 and 21.1 per cent.
INCREASE: Luxury Italian car brand Maserati saw their sales rise significantly. Only in January, yearon-year sales by Maserati increased by 650 per cent, from only two cars sold in the first month of 2013, to 15 in 2014. Ferrari saw their yearon-year sales increase by 166.7 per cent, from three to eight cars. Nissan’s luxury vehicle division completes the podium. Sales in Infiniti
experienced a year-onyear increase of 30.4 per cent. Also showing positive figures are Land Rover (16.5 per cent year-onyear increase), Audi and Lexus (both with a yearon-year increase of more than 10 per cent), and BMW (5.6 per cent). Surprisingly, year-onyear sales by Mercedes
decreased by 4.6 per cent. Lamborghini sold the same number of cars as last year. Other manufacturers including Jaguar, Porsche or Aston Martin - registered a decrease in sales in January. These, however, decreased less than last year, which makes the recovery in this sector apparent.
Car sales on the up in January CAR sales in Spain increased by 7.6 per cent in the first month of the year, with a total of 53,436 units sold in January. This is a remarkable increase compared to the 19,496 cars sold in the same period last year. The Spanish Car and Lorry Manufacturers Association (Anfac) credits the sales boost to the fifth phase of the PIVE incentive programme, which came into force on January 29. “The PIVE 5 has allowed the month of January to close with positive figures,” said Communications Manager at Anfac David Barrientos. This increase, however, is slightly lower than the one the market experienced during the last months of 2013. In December last year, for example, 60,513 units were sold, an 18.2 per cent increase. By brands, Volkswagen lead the market

UDI’S S1, the car that would see the brand dominating the World Rally Championship, is back as a road-going version. The German manufacturer presented the S1 and the S1 Sportback, the new flagship models in the compact A1 model line. The 2.0 TFSI engine fitted with a turbocharger develops 170 kW and produces up to 370 Nm of torque. The two-litre engine accelerates the Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 and 5.9 seconds respectively. The top speed is 250 km/h. On average the TFSI consumes just 7.0 or 7.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. TOM FINNEY REMEMBERED Former England international footballer Sir Tom Finney died last Friday, aged 91. He played for his home club, Preston North End, from 1946 until 1960, scoring 210 goals in 473 appearances. He also netted 30 times in 76 games for his country. Never booked or sent-off, he was voted ‘Footballer of the Year’ in 1954 and 1957, being the first player to win the prize twice. What a great man. R.I.P.

Gale force, icy winds were the order of the day and these proved very difficult for everybody. Nevertheless there was some decent bowling and Calpe came away with four points - just losing out by two shots 68 - 70. Match results were:

BBC Lions stay top of northern league BBC Lions roared their way to success playing away to Javea Green Opals in the Northern League, winning all 10 points with a 96-37 shot difference to keep them top of the League . To add to that the Challengers also came home with a very good win to put them in second place to the Tigers who are three points ahead. The Tigers were home to Finca Guila Swallows where they had an 8-2 victory to put them 4th in the table.
