Helicopter rescues two climbers AN injured climber was rescued after falling in the mountains of Redovan. The 49-year-old fell from a height of 20 metres and broke his wrist and

ankle. He was rescued by helicopter as the area was inaccessible to the emergency services and taken to the Vega Baja Hospital where his injuries were treated.

The same helicopter was also used to rescue a woman who broke her ankle on the climb to the summit of the Puig Campana La Pedrera, Bigastro.

LOST literary treasure from Spain’s Golden Age of Letters has been discovered gathering dust in the National Library in Madrid. ‘Mujeres y criados’ (Women and Menservants) by Spanish playwright Lope de Vega (1562-1635), was written 400 years ago but its existence had been lost in the mists of time. It was apparently put in the National Library in the late 19th century and had been lying forgotten on the shelves ever since, while Lope scholars had given up hope of ever finding it. It was found by chance by Alejandro Garcia-Reidy, a Syracuse University professor, during an investigation into 16th and 17th century theatre. Garcia-Reidy is

Woman’s €1,000 electric shock ONE Torrevieja woman is warning Euro Weekly News readers to check their Iberdrola electricity meters after she had a bill sent to her for over €1,000. The 70-year-old lady from Denmark has lived in Spain for 10 years and for the last six years suffered from ME. She said she was shocked to receive the bill as her condition means she sleeps a lot and hardly ever cooks and uses a gas boiler and gas for heating.

The letter from Iberdrola stated ‘irregularities’ with her meter with the equipment being ‘manipulated.’ “I have never manipulated it or touched it,” she said. “I have always had low bills but a neighbour lets me use his solar panels at times for my electricity, so my bills were ranging from anything from €8.64 in January 2011 to €98.23 in the March and every bill has always been paid.”

Motorcyclist killed in N-332 accident A MOTORCYCLIST has died on the N-332 at Pilar de la Horadada. The 39-year-old is reported to have hit a car in a head-on collision. The female driver of the car was unharmed. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

NEWS Family involved in death crash THE owners of a branch of opticians in Cartagena, Torre Pacheco and Fuente Alamo have been involved in a car accident in which their son’s girlfriend was killed. The couple were travelling with their son; the youngest of their three children and his girlfriend. She was killed instantly in the accident on the A92 in the municipality of Cullar in Granada. The son was taken to Granada hospital where he underwent emergency surgery after suffering from two broken vertebrae and a head injury. His parents suffered lesser injuries and were taken to hospital in Baza.

Fines for forest fires THE Valencian Government has approved the decree to punish negligence which leads to forest fires. The Interior Ministry estimates that 70 per cent of forest fires occurring in the Region are intentional or caused by negligence, hence the ‘need for decisive action.’ Heavy fines of thousands of euros will be issued, depending on the severity of each case taking into account the risk to emergency personnel, size of the fire and whether property was affected. Plan to reduce waiting lists MORE than 4,000 patients have been operated on under the Emergency Plan in the Valencia Community. Launched by the Department of Health, the Plan aims to reduce surgical waiting lists through referrals to private clinics in nonurgent cases for operations such as hip and knee replacements, bunions, hernias and varicose veins. Of the 4,254 people using the plan at a cost of €5 million, 2,016 were from Alicante Province. It is expected that through the introduction of the Emergency Plan, a total of 7,000 patients will receive operations from private clinics.

Vaccines a problem ONE HUNDRED paediatricians reported at the Medical College of Alicante that a shortage of chickenpox vaccines will be a ‘real problem for society.’ Experts of the Medical Association claim that the drug shortages could bring repercussions on children saying there is scientific evidence showing possible serious complications of this disease and its mortality rate.

Paediatricians said in a statement that routine childhood immunisation produces good immunity and reduces the incidence of chickenpox and also shingles in adults. Experts also criticised the infeasibility of having to resort to going to Madrid and Navarra to buy this drug, since these are the only communities that include the vaccine in the immunisation schedule for children aged 12-15 years.

Julivert platform calls for cat protection THE Julivert pressure group in Santa Pola is calling for the protection of colonies of cats and wants to build a shelter in the town. Stray cats have become the centre of attention for many residents of the fishing village due to their abundant presence in the areas near the beaches, with many neighbours feeding them at their own cost and even paying for sterilisation. However, members of Julivert have also seen cases of animal abuse and neglect and are now asking residents to report any cases to the

Register your right to vote

Iceland has the big wow factor

TODAY (Thursday) is the closing date to register a right to vote in the upcoming European elections. People wanting to vote must inform their local ‘padron’ office of their intention to participate in the elections which can be done by informing the office at the time of ‘empadronamiento’ or by calling in at any time to ensure that their name is on the list. Only those residents who hold a resident’s certificate will be included on the electoral role. Elections to the European parliament will be held during May 2014. John Paul Mulero, from the OARI in Torrevieja said: “Well before voting day, all Torrevieja residents who are registered on the municipal padron but who have not registered their intention to vote, should receive a letter inviting them to solicit their vote. This application for inclusion in the voter’s register will apply to both EU and municipal elections. A few weeks before any election, the electoral role will be placed on public view and errors can be notified then.”

ICELAND Torrevieja certainly has the wow factor when it comes to helping with fundraising. The store welcomed The Royal British Legion Torrevieja Branch during Poppy Appeal 2013 and helped raise nearly €3,200, more than €500 more than they raised in 2012. Iceland was presented a certificate of thanks by the branch’s Lady chairman, Gill Burden. This was a bumper year for the branch with Iceland helping to break all records and take the total raised in the branch area to €19,471.78. The branch sent its thanks to all members of the public for their support and

Caves come alive with life drawings A FREE life drawing demonstration and workshop with Martin Robinson took place in the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales The artist has been the featured painter in the caves during December and January with his art work on display and decided to make use of the unique setting of the caves to hold the workshop with a model having flown over from the UK. The truth finally comes out... EURO WEEKLY NEWS directors Michel and Steven Euesden finally got their day in court to fight the attacks of the founder of The Entertainer, Lenox Napier. Napier, now based in Mojacar, Almeria, subjected them to years of written insults and attacks online, an Almeria court heard. He claimed that the Euesdens had stolen from him the brand The Entertainer, the newspaper which he founded and which preceded the Euro Weekly News (EWN). However, evidence was presented in court to prove that the brand he sold them did not belong to him and that it was mortgaged. Upon becoming aware of these two facts, the Euesdens decided not to go ahead with the option to buy, but not before they had already paid more than €500,000, the court was told. In addition, assets of Napier’s

company, Paperweight SA, were allegedly hidden to avoid outstanding creditors. None of this information had been made available to the Euesdens upon entering the agreement. It was also proved in court that all monies agreed for the rental of the brand were paid in full, although this was never notarised. Napier got The Entertainer brand back, but the money he had been paid was not returned to the Euesdens, who also had to pay off hundreds of thousands of euros in debts hanging over the newspaper. They then had to endure a campaign of personal and professional attacks while starting anew to make EWN the strong media product that it is today. In court, Napier refused to answer the questions put by the prosecution, and is facing two

years in prison for defamation and fraud. At this time, EWN is seeking no monetary compensation for damages. Despite his claims that the brand was ‘stolen’ from him, Napier never took the case to court, and instead insulted the Euesdens, although his defence claimed that words like ‘a***holes’ and ‘fraudsters’ had been ‘misinterpreted’. His section ‘Weenie Watch’ written on his website in an attempt to discredit them, was removed in 2010 under a court order as it was defamatory not only against the Euesdens but also the hardworking, loyal team at EWN. He posted false accounts of their financial status online and insulting e-mails were sent to individual clients of EWN, written to appear as if they came from Steven Euesden.

STOOD THEIR GROUND: Steven and Michel Euesden. Despite how damaging this hate campaign was to advertisers and the EWN brand itself, the Euesdens never stooped to his level. They have received no support from the local press, but have trusted in their co-workers and the Spanish legal system. Although it has been a nerveracking experience, and led to a long period of suffering, they are confident that justice will prevail. More information will follow, but in the meantime, the Euesdens and all the team at EWN want to thank our loyal advertisers and readers, as without them, they feel they would have given up the fight long ago.

What will one day be Europe’s tallest residential building, at 200 metres and 55 storeys, is practically finished but 70 per cent of its 269 apartments are unsold. Promoters Olga Urbana are deep in debt and burdened by a €93-million loan from Caixa Galicia. It now one of the toxic assets acquired by Spain’s ‘bad bank’ Sareb. One buyer, tired of waiting for a finished apartment promised in 2009, is suing Olga Urbana for the return of the €133,750 that he has already paid. He also wants €37,361 in compensation. If Olga Urbana does not have the wherewithal to repay the client it is now necessary to look towards its credit from Sareb. This is the only source of liquidity to guarantee the claim, said lawyer Mario Torrubia. A Benidorm court has accepted this formula, although Olga Urbana sources insisted that this is a precautionary measure. This is equivalent to the earnings of the country’s poorest 20 per cent, an OxfamIntermon report claimed recently. The government’s claim that the officers were not covered by the directive has been dismissed by the European Commission (EC), which has effectively said officers are just like any other worker. The EC has now asked Spain to respect Civil Guards’ rights to minimum rest periods and the 48-hour limit on average weekly working time, as required by the Working Time Directive. member states may exclude managing executives or other persons with autonomous decision-taking powers from the 48-hour limit to average weekly working time and minimum rest periods. However, this, said the commission, only applies to people with “genuine and effective autonomy over both the amount and the organisation of their working time,” which it said, was not the case for the majority of the Civil Guard workers concerned. The Spanish pointed to the fact that the directive also permits member states to exclude from the provisions on minimum rest periods activities involving the need for continuity of service or requiring a permanent presence in order to protect property and persons. That, the Spanish government said, clearly gave an exclusion to on-duty Guardia Civil over rest periods and maximum working weeks. But the commission decided that the directive only gives this exclusion if the workers concerned are given time off in lieu, which Spanish law does not guarantee.

German estate agent grows 48.5 per cent GERMAN real estate company Engel & Voelkers AG registered a massive 48.5 per cent growth in Spain in 2013. The company has been present in Spain since 1999, and is the world leader of high-end property sales. The value of property sold by Engel & Voelkers in 2013 reached more than €435 million (compared with the previous year’s €293 million). The marked increase is in contrast to the adverse situation still faced by the Spanish real estate market. According to the Ministry of Public Works, sales in the first nine months of 2013 (€25,804 million) showed a decrease of 15.6 per cent from the same period in 2012 (€30,567 million). But the good news for sellers is that prices went up, with the average price for top-end property coming in at €719,759. Likewise, the number of Engel & Voelkers’ rental transactions also increased over the year prior, though the average price was less in keeping with the overall market trend of lower rental prices. In 2013, they facilitated 435 rental contracts with a median price of just under €2,500 a month, where in 2013 the figures stood at 307 rentals at an average price of a little over €2,800 a month.

Pat on the back, but no room for complacency A TOP Eurocrat has congratulated Spain on its exit from a banks’ bailout programme, but warned there is no room for complacency. The Spanish financial sector bailout programme has now formally ended 18 months after it started. Vice-President Olli Rehn of the European Commission, said: “Spanish financial markets have stabilised, banks have increased liquidity, their solvency

position remains comfortable, deposits have been rising and access to funding markets has been improving. “The restructuring of banks having received state aid is well under way, guided by the restructuring plans adopted by the European Commission. The governance, regulatory and supervisory framework of the banking sector has been significantly strengthened, so as

to ensure that the irresponsible practices which led to the crisis in the first place will not be repeated.” He continued: “The programme has achieved its twin objectives of repairing and reforming the Spanish financial sector, and in so doing, helping to create a sound basis for the economic recovery. These efforts have been carried out alongside major structural reforms aimed at restoring

competitiveness, and significant fiscal consolidation to ensure the sustainability of public finances.” But he added that despite the successes of 2013, there was still a long way to go. “The challenges facing Spain remain considerable and there should be no complacency. Efforts must continue to deliver a steady and sustained fall in unemployment, which remains dramatically high. Reforms must

be pursued and fiscal consolidation must proceed as agreed.” Ending on a positive note, he added. “Nonetheless, today we can conclude that the programme has worked. Thanks to the Spanish authorities’ determined efforts and the support and solidarity of the euro area member states, confidence in the Spanish economy has returned, and justifiably so.”

Women from lower socioeconomic backgrounds were found to be disillusioned with sex for a number of striking reasons. Investigators report that poorer women are more prone to having unprotected sex, so the risks and worry that go alongside this can weigh on the mind and take the fun out of sex. Those women struggling with finances were also reported to be more likely to find themselves on the receiving end of sexual abuse, and less likely to seek help

from organisations that might be able to help them get out of an abusive situation. In contrast, wealthy women were found to be more aware of their needs and had more freedom to develop their sexuality. The security of money appears to have given women from higher socioeconomic backgrounds the gift of more selfconfidence and control to make decisions about their love-lives that ultimately make them happy. All in all, however, the Spanish don’t fare too badly in the bedroom, with the majority of men and women surveyed saying they were very satisfied or quite satisfied with their sex-life in general! MONEY MATTERS: Rich women have better sex.

According to a new report from Barcelona, which analysed the Spanish National Sexual Health Survey, investigators found that women with higher socioeconomic status report greater sexual satisfaction. That’s right, girls, the more cash you carry in your purse, the more fun you have in the bedroom, or anywhere else the mood takes you. The sexual dissatisfaction or satisfaction has little to do with skills between the sheets, but more to do with the amount of control a woman feels she has over her life, and love-life.

TWO Spanish cities - Malaga and Barcelona - are amongst the six finalists shortlisted for the first European Capital of Innovation award, or iCapital. An independent panel of experts has agreed on the six finalists, the others being Espoo (Finland), Grenoble (France), Groningen (Netherlands), and Paris (France) for the €500,000 prize. The money will go to the city building the best ‘innovation ecosystem’ - connecting citizens, public organisations, academia, and business - with a view to helping the city scale up its efforts in this field. The winner will be announced at the Innovation Convention 2014, Europe’s

premier innovation event in Brussels on March 10 and 11. Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, said: “The response to this competition was impressive, with 58 European cities applying. OPINION & COMMENT

Looking abroad to survive AS hard as it is in an economy like Spain’s where educated youths are genuinely having a hard time finding employment, my thoughts are drawn to African immigrants I see on the beaches, some of whom I engage in conversation. After hearing their stories, one truly finds out what it means to face a dangerous alternative by looking abroad just to survive. The courage it takes to leave everything you’ve ever known and head to a place where you know people won’t welcome you and where you’re not even guaranteed work speaks to 1) the guts such risk-taking requires and 2) the desperation of the situation one is leaving. Some of them are actually quite educated and if I had a business, I’d hire them. And for those that weren’t educated in a school, I don’t really care because they’ve certainly been educated in life. At least in Spain those who can’t find the work they’ve been trained for still have access to healthcare, for example, or at least they’re with their families who might help a bit. This is not to discount the truly hard situation youths in Malaga face with unemployment. It’s just to say that, if you open your eyes and look around, you’ll find someone in a much worse situation than yourself, which will hopefully boost your optimism about your own situation. While every little helps, the Spanish Government should be doing much more for the younger generation. When I left home in the UK I went straight to university, while friends who chose a different route went into apprenticeships. The point being that there was something to do for everyone.

In Spain with youth unemployment standing at over 50 per cent there is NOTHING for the young to do. Education opportunities have been cut back, apprenticeships are rare. All in the name of austerity. The solution? Invest in the country’s future. It is short sighted in the extreme to deny youngsters further education. Cut backs in education budgets must be reversed if Spain is to move forward. Disastrous policy CHINA’S one-child policy was an economic disaster. The hazards of labour shortages and an aging population have emerged, and China’s social-security system hasn’t been set up yet. I WONDER if the Regional/ National Governments are determined to wipe out small businesses? According to the papers the Murcia government wouldn’t pay Ryanair a subsidy for bringing in customers to the region (although they were offering the subsidy to Air Berlin). As a result, Ryanair cancelled nearly all their winter flights from October to March. This means anyone from the UK that wants a winter break in this part of Spain has to fly into Alicante and are not likely to drive or taxi down to this region, so they head for Benidorm or similar. Now I see in the EWN (Costa Blanca South, Issue 1485) ‘Expats could be hit by rental law’ forcing anyone with a second home to licence it before renting out. Surely this will force many to consider it no longer worthwhile to keep these properties on, pushing even more houses onto an already saturated market and resulting in more losses of revenue to the councils. Is there not to be any consultation with the people likely to be affected before these laws are pushed through? John Bingham (By email)

Police relief I READ in your paper about ‘Benidorm bobbies’ patrolling the streets in high tourism areas (Costa Blanca North, Issue 1490) - what a relief! I have an apartment near that area which I visit a couple of times a year and am so pleased to hear the police are taking local crime seriously. Obviously pickpockets and con artists are attracted to an area so full of tourists, and over the years I have become increasingly nervous about going out on my own. I’ve just returned from my winter holiday, and am looking for flights for summer already. Now I know the area is a little safer, I can’t wait to come back. Pitfalls of being controversial... O

NE of the pitfalls of scribing on controversial subjects is being taken out of context. The BBC is a past master at it. It entails pulling a section out of someone’s writing or speech and quoting it without any reference to the accompanying text or dialogue. Well, those who participate in this practice are about to have a field day, because my subject this week is racism, or to be more precise, what I consider reversed racism. I don’t have many black friends. I don’t feel this is in any way my fault or choice, it is simply that black people are more inclined to mix with others of the same pigmentation. I think the white races have bent over backwards in the fight for equality for black people, even going to war for their beliefs. Personally, I am delighted that all over the western world they are accepted on equal terms as white people and have achieved

tremendous heights in our extremely competitive society, from sports and entertainment, right up to the most powerful office in the world. Can anyone tell me therefore why they always appear to be the first to play the race card? The recent case of the young thug shot by police was blamed on racism, which was in itself ridiculous. Something I caught on Facebook last week was exsinging star Linda Lewis, decrying the fact that there had been no black solo artists in the charts for some years. She inferred this was due to race. I suppose it has nothing to do with the fact that black artists only seem to churn out rap or ‘gangsta’ music these days. (Where are all the Johnny Mathises, and Whitney Houstons, I wonder!?) I didn’t hear any

And also this week we had the most ludicrous of all. The ‘chair’ incident. The black lady in a most ungainly position fashioned into a chair. Wails of ‘racism’ were heard throughout the land. But the original version of this most distasteful piece of furniture

depicted a white woman. I didn’t hear any racism comments when that was first displayed to the public. No I’m afraid what’s good for the goose is good for the gander and it is high time black people took a leaf out of the white folks’ book and started accepting them as equals. Hi Leapy, Keep up the good work with the column! My father lies in a grave in Dunkirk. He fought to keep Britain free and now we are giving it away! I watch Question Time on the BBC and sometimes I think the audience is hand-picked. These stupid politicians keep saying Europe has open borders, so we have to let everyone come to Britain. When he was in power in France, Nicolas Sarkozy, the president, said do not blame the French for the refugees camping in Sangatte - it is your benefit system, it is the best in the world! It will certainly be our downfall because our politicians have no guts.

SEFUL as a headline grabber is the topic of rogue tenants. Less newsworthy are the darker deeds of many who use their property as a second income. Employed in Spanish real estate part of my pitch back then was to suggest that by renting your holiday home others pay your mortgage. It was a sales clincher. Yes, there are rogue tenants as there are rogues in all walks of life. However, countless responsible tenants are taken for granted and many are robbed blind. An undeclared additional income from property letting is black economy, just as are

airport runs and much else done ‘on the side.’ I wonder how many owners declare rental income or insure their tenants. Those who live in glass houses. Much of the rental market is anarchic and owners resist tighter controls. I think the

licensed and controlled section of holiday accommodation providers does have a valid criticism. In most EU countries licensed B & B, the family-run pensions, make up a respectable trade that benefits owners and travellers. That worthwhile

occupation is undermined by Spain’s free-for-all holiday let culture. Tens of thousands of jobs may have been lost to the informal holiday let economy Do tradesmen, licensed cab drivers and retailers like it when unlicensed vendors undercut and steal their trade? Why should a holiday let be considered above regulation? It would tackle the problem of dodgy tenants, but would control the rogue owners too. If scoundrel tenants are the tip of the iceberg, letting owners are the sixth-sevenths that go unseen. When the Daily Mail ran an article on lost rental deposits the online reader response was overwhelmed by complaints made by tenants who, on the flimsiest excuse, forfeited hefty deposits. If that happens in the UK, a country where it is far easier to seek legal redress than it is in Spain, what opportunity for rogue property owners on the Costas.

It is so difficult for tenants to recover deposits that many agents and owners don’t even bother to excuse their theft by citing a stained carpet or unmade bed. Thousands of tenants forfeit sizeable deposits on the grounds of a little wear and tear. As one month’s advance rent plus two months deposit is the norm, this means a considerable sum of money placed at the disposal of the agent or owner for a considerable time. Of course there is never mention of the benefits of letting; the responsible tenants who besides paying rent freely maintain, secure and improve the homes of owners. On balance I am in favour of the entire rental market being better regulated. Rental agencies and holiday let owners would be horrified at the suggestion whilst most tenants would welcome such a move, which says it all. It is tenants who need protection, not owners nor their agencies.

FRANCE has a Minister of the Interior called Manuel Valls. He is no longer beloved by all the people who voted for him two years ago and ‘popularist’ and ‘authoritarian’ are often-heard adjectives from his adversaries. Valls also happens to have been born in Barcelona in 1962, the son of a Catalan painter exiled in France. As Anna Hidalgo’s surname suggests she, too, is Spanish by birth and this 55year-old woman who was born in San Fernando (Cadiz) is well on her way to becoming the first female mayor of Paris. Not easy to imagine French-born politicians occupying the same posts in Spain, is it?

Money motive ARGUMENTS over money can sour the best of relationships and the relationship between Cataluña and Spain has not always been of the best.

Like the Scots they have a lot to forgive but, again like the Scots, much of that belongs to a past they are judging by today’s standards. Money is brandished as a valid motive for Cataluña’s secession from Spain, but are its politicians and economists getting their sums right? Josep Borrell, a former PSOE Minister of Economy, later President of the European Parliament and now President of the European University Institute, believes not. In a newspaper article co-written with Catalan businessman Joan Llorach, he blew a hole through Catalan claims that the region would save €16 billion a year by leaving Spain. Cataluña’s fiscal deficit – the cause of so much heartache and heartburn – is around €792 million, according to Borrell and Llorach’s calculations, not the much-quoted €16 billion. And this is compensated by €4 billions-worth of services provided by the central government. No-one could accuse Borrell of doing Rajoy’s work for him, and there’s the old saw about ‘lies, damned lies and statistics’. But if there’s one thing guaranteed to make Catalans think twice about independence it’s hitting them where it hurts most: in their pockets.

Primary care THE PSOE has reluctantly set November as the date for its primaries, leaving Alfredo Rubalcaba to head the party in May’s euro elections. Rubalcaba led the socialists to their worst-ever defeats in 2011’s local and general elections and although the PP is suffering mission fatigue, he is unlikely to shine in May. Carme Chacon, Patxi Lopez and Eduardo Madina are closing in on him, but by the time one of them – or a dark horse – emerges from the primaries, it could be too late to pick up the pieces.

Price war in bread industry THE Spanish bread industry is in the midst of a price war. RECENTLY we discussed the important winter cutback and clean up in your garden and suggested you shred as much of the prunings and weeds as you can. This week and next we discuss the art of shredding and in the following edition on February 13 we will look at the making of good compost which is not always easy here in Spain. What does a shredder do? At each seasonal clean up, especially the major winter clean-up, a good

shredder will chop up most, if not all, prunings and weeds into easy to handle small pieces just right for the compost heap or reducing the number of sacks of garden rubbish you need to dispose of. The garden shredder is probably the most important machine for gardeners in Spain. Especially if gardening according to organic/ ecological principles. What are the benefits? a) No need for smoky bonfires. b) The shredded material is excellent for mixing with • Kitchen waste to create a balanced compost heap. • Manure and leaf mould in creating no dig beds for the vegetable garden. • Kitchen waste and manure to prepare trenches for next year’s beans. c) The shredded material makes a good mulch for around the base of shrubs and trees. d) If you don’t yet have a compost heap the material is easily bagged for disposal. What are the negatives? However, although very useful, the shredder has a number of potential problems. a) It is noisy. So don’t use during siesta times or

on a Sunday morning. b) The machine can be dangerous if not used and maintained properly. c) Shredding takes more time than having a bonfire, filling a skip or taking bags of winter clean up rubbish to a legal local tip. Tips for buying a shredder 1. Buy a machine that will cope with the volume of waste produced by your winter clean up. 2. Check that the feed tube has a good safety guard that allows easy feeding but the impossibility of putting your hand in! 3. Ask for a demonstration of how the machine can be dismantled to clean the blade after use or if you have a jam up when using. It should only take a few minutes. 4. If you know anyone with a shredder ask them for advice. 5. If you want to shred a long distance from the house it may be worth considering a petrol driven shredder to avoid a long electric lead. What is the choice? There are many different models on the market. Some are electrically operated and others petrol driven. The main variations are as follows. 1. Top or side loading. We prefer the first. 2. One or two blades - the two blade models

process material quicker. 3. Height above the ground - this affects the size of container that you can put under the outlet and ease of loading without having to use a step. Always simulate how you would have to use a machine before considering buying it. 4. Ease of clearing blockages - check this with the shop. Some models have reversible blades, others quick dismantling bolts. Some side loading machines take some time not the thing you need with a large pile to shred. 5. Electrically driven machines are best for small gardens when an electric socket won’t be far away, but long trailing leads across large plots are not safe so it’s best to opt for a petrol model. Prices do vary from one shop to another so do check your local agricultural cooperative, tool shops and eBay before making a final decision. In making your final selection recognise that the biggest machine is not necessarily the best, especially for the average garden. In some areas it is possible to hire shredders. This would save an immediate investment and help you test out a manufacturer.

Most and least expensive square metres in Spain AN Idealista.com survey has come out with the 2013 figures for Spain’s most and least expensive real estate. In the survey of 330,000 homes throughout the country, the Basque Country topped the list of the most expensive square metres at €3,000. Meanwhile, Toledo was the cheapest at less than €1,000 per square metre. The Idealista.com survey also concluded that second-hand homes in Spain have slowed their price drop and are only 7.4 per cent cheaper than last year with an average per-square-metre price of €1,735. Only two provinces,

Lugo and Orense, finished out 2013 with a rise in prices compared to 2012. Another relevant fact brought to light by the survey is that in many communities, price drops had been quite steep. For example, Lerida had a fall of 53.5 per cent, and Zaragoza had a 47.6 per cent drop. Since the recession started, it has been a buyer’s market as house prices have fallen by an overall 20 per cent. The head of surveys at Idealista.com comments that the optimism in the real estate sector is surprising, given that many think that the market has

Skyscraper plans move forward in December rentals rise Malaga

POSITIVE NOTE: Overall increase in holiday rentals.

SPAIN registered a 22 per cent overall rise in holiday rentals in December. Houses in Andalucia, the Balearic Islands, the Canaries, Valencia, Cataluña and Madrid were the most in demand. Spain is the third most popular destination for holiday rentals. Thirty-four per cent of its visitors came from the UK, 33 per cent from Italy, and 22 per cent from France. Tenerife and Malaga rose a dramatic 59 per cent in comparison to the same period last year. Mallorca rose 28 per cent, Costa Brava 18 per cent and Costa Blanca 13 per cent. The head representative of Homelidays in Spain commented that closing the year on such a positive note

augurs well for the next season. Home sales to foreigners in the third term of last year rose by 12 per cent with the highest selling communities being Andalucia, Valencia, Cataluña, the Balearics and the Canaries. Last year 9,502 properties were sold to foreigners which, though not as high as the peak in 2006 with 30,000 sales, is a marked rise on previous years. For rentals and sales, foreigners principally look for homes in quiet areas, well-connected by road and, above all, near the coast. This means the Mediterranean coast is one of the most sought-after with Russians, British and Germans being the biggest spenders.

THE city of Malaga is the only municipality within Malaga Province with concrete approval for the building of skyscrapers. The plans include blueprints for the construction of properties ranging from 20 to 35 storeys along Avenida de Juan XXIII, as well as in the city’s Guadalmedina section. Although technically skyscrapers, they do not approach the 50-floor

skyscrapers recently proposed - and turned down - in Marbella. The most conspicuous of the city’s projected skyscrapers is to be built on the Avenida de Juan XXIII where plans exist for four separate towers rising to between 29-35 storeys. The original plan called for even more storeys which had to be reduced due to interference with air space and rights of way in relation to Malaga inter-

national airport. Another three towers of 22 storeys each are planned in the Torre del Rio section, with another two of 30 storeys each planned for the Martiricos project near the Guadalmedina riverbed. In comparison to other large skyscrapers in Spain, those planned for Malaga

are not exceptionally tall. The Torre Espacio in Madrid, though not the tallest of the Cuatro Torres of Madrid in terms of height, has the most floors of any Spanish skyscraper with 56, almost double that of those planned for Malaga. Benidorm’s Grand Hotel Bali has 52 floors,

while the Torre Mapfre in Barcelona has 44. Malaga’s acceptance of the plans stands in contrast to that of its neighbouring towns on the Mediterranean coast. Marbella, a fellow Costa del Sol hotspot, has rejected the idea of skyscrapers in the face

of public opposition. Marbella’s limits for real estate are capped at six floors on top of a ground floor. The next highest allowance within the province of Malaga is that of the town of Fuengirola, which allows up to eight storeys in certain parts.

the World Drivers’ and World Constructors’ Championships. Sebastian Vettel starts the season as the defending drivers’ champion after winning his fourth

consecutive title last term, while his team, Red Bull Racing, will begin the campaign as defending Constructors' Champions, having won their fourth consecutive championship in 2013.

Calendar changes • The Russian Grand Prix will take place on a street circuit inside the Sochi Olympic Park. • Red Bull reached an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to revive the Austrian Grand Prix after a 10-year absence. The race will be held at the Red Bull Ring which previously hosted the Austrian Grand Prix in 2003 when the circuit was known as the A1Ring. • The Bahrain Grand Prix will be a twilight event, under lights, similar to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. • The Hockenheimring returns to host the German Grand Prix.

Sporting regulations • Mid-season car testing is back. Four European venues will each host a two-day test in the week following the Grand Prix to be held at a chosen circuit. • The end-of-

season ‘Young Driver’ Tests have been discontinued. • The penalty system has been overhauled, so as to improve driving standards, with the introduction of a ‘penalty points’ system for driving offences which will carry a pre-determined points value based on their severity. These points will be tallied up over the course of the season, with a driver receiving a race ban after accumulating 12 penalty points. • Any driver who received a race ban will also receive an additional five penalty points on his return to the track - a form of probation if you like, to discourage further driving offences. All points will remain on a driver’s licence for 12 months. • Race stewards will have the power to hand out five-second penalties - including a drivethrough. • A car will be allowed five engine changes during 2014 (it was eight last year). History of the FIFA World Cup: The 1938 Tournament in France By Tony Matthews AFTER France had been chosen to stage the last World Cup before World War Two, the decision caused outrage in South America, as it was the second tournament in a row to be played in Europe. Because of anger over the decision to hold a second successive World Cup in Europe, neither Uruguay nor Argentina entered the competition, while Spain became the first country to be prevented from competing by war. Five of the first round ties went to extra time with two of these going to a replay. One of the replays saw Germany beaten 4–2 by Switzerland in front of a hostile, bottle-throwing

crowd. This is the only time to date that Germany have been eliminated in the first round. The hosts France also went out early, ousted by Italy. Good swims for Torrevieja this weekend TORREVIEJA swimmers competed in the Alicante Regional League last Saturday, January 25 in the municipal pool La Nucia. This time the Benjamin and Alevinaged swimmers swam the 50m and 100m freestyle, the 200m butterfly and the 4x100m backstroke relay. Two of the team’s youngest swimmers, Felica Sasso and Konstantin Murskiy, raced for the very first time in the 50m freestyle races. Amy Connolly and Densel Fusha followed in the 100m freestyle with Amy knocking six seconds off her previous time. Next to follow in the girls 100m freestyle were Victoria Pigneur, Samira Lucumbi and Gabriela Pashova. Both Vicky and Samira improved on their times and were placed 6th and 7th in this event. The two older girls Skye Burns and Paula Garcia

had good swims in their 100m freestyle races, with both improving on previous times and with Paula earning a regional qualifying time in the event. For the male swimmers, Elian Del Rio Castillo gained 4th place and a new personal best and regional qualifying time in his 100m freestyle. Jacob Ruiz and Georgy Murskiy also had good swims in the 100m freestyle, with Jacob knocking 11 seconds off his best time. The gruelling 200m butterfly event followed, a test for the older swimmers. Elian came 5th, knocking 42 seconds off his previous time. THIS weekend sees the start of the 2014 Six Nations tournament with Wales taking on Italy and France v England on Saturday followed by Ireland v Scotland on Sunday. Also there are some interesting Premiership games to look out for including Arsenal v Crystal Palace, Manchester City v Chelsea, the TyneWear derby between Newcastle and Sunderland, Stoke v Manchester United and WBA v Liverpool. In the Championship, it’s Bournemouth v Leicester, Nottingham Forest v Yeovil and the big one, QPR v Burnley, while in Leagues One and Two, Brentford visit Shrewsbury and Hartlepool plays Scunthorpe. Runaway leaders in their Divisions in Scotland, Celtic and Rangers, take on Aberdeen and Brechin City respectively. All this follows Tuesday’s and last night’s mid-week encounters which saw derbies between Aston Villa and WBA, Chelsea v West Ham and Liverpool v Everton, plus Southampton v Arsenal and Tottenham v Manchester City.
