A campaign in five languages is urging residents who registered more than five years ago to verify their details and officially confirm that they are still in the town. The advantages of registering are also explained to new arrivals and those who who have never bothered to do so. “You are Alfaz,” the posters tell residents in Spanish, English,

Norwegian, French and German, reminding them that registering is a right as well as a duty. This is especially important in Alfaz, where foreign-born residents from 100 different countries outnumber the Spanish. The campaign points out that presence on the padron is a win-win situation as it brings an important array of municipal services. Registering is also mutually beneficial as the bigger the population, the bigger the grants from national government.

InTempo beset with problems PROBLEMS continue to beset Benidorm’s InTempo tower. What will one day be Europe’s tallest residential building, at 200 metres and 55 storeys, is practically finished but 70 per cent of its 269 apartments are unsold. Promoters Olga Urbana are deep in debt and burdened by a €93 million loan from Caixa Galicia. It now one of the toxic assets acquired by Spain’s ‘bad bank’ Sareb. One buyer, tired of waiting for a finished apartment promised in 2009, is suing Olga Urbana for the return of the €133,750 that he has already paid. He also wants €37,361 in compensation. If Olga Urbana does not have the wherewithal to repay his client it is now necessary to look towards its credit from Sareb. This is the only source of liquidity to guarantee the claim, said lawyer Mario Torrubia. A Benidorm court has accepted this formula, although Olga Urbana sources insisted that this is a precautionary measure. Neither a verdict nor sentence has yet been announced, they said.

No UK appetite for new doll ALICANTE toy-makers Famosa have been accused of encouraging anorexia. The UK media picked up on the manufacturers’ latest doll, ‘Nenuco won’t eat’ which has a mechanism that turns its head away when offered food. This carries a “dangerous subliminal message that will

encourage girls to refuse food,” British campaigners claimed. “It encourages them to think that refusing food is normal,” said Chris Leaman, policy manager at YoungMinds. Netmums and eating disorder charity SWEDA agreed. “Promoting what is basically an anorexic doll seems unhealthy,” said a SWEDA

spokeswoman. Manufacturers Famosa leapt to the doll’s defence. “Nenuco dolls recreate real-life experiences between mothers and children, encouraging play and positive learning,” said a Famosa spokesman at the Alicante factory. LOST literary treasure from Spain’s Golden Age of Letters has been discovered gathering dust in the National Library in Madrid. ‘Mujeres y criados’ (Women and Menservants) by Spanish playwright Lope de Vega (1562-1635), was written 400 years ago but its existence had been lost in the mists of time. It was apparently put in the National Library in the late 19th century and had been lying forgotten on the shelves ever since, while Lope scholars had given up hope of ever finding it. It was found by chance by Alejandro Garcia-Reidy, a Syracuse University professor, during an investigation into 16th and 17th century theatre. Garcia-Reidy is

Research which has been carried out since its discovery in 2010 has proved beyond a doubt that the play was written by Lope de Vega. The different ways of learning in Campello CAMPELLO confirmed the dramatised tours of the town’s Roman remains will continue this year. Alicante City’s MARQ archaeological museum and Campello Town Hall is again cooperating on the tours scheduled to begin at Easter. As they did last year, they will combine tourism and culture to put the history of the Illeta dels Banyets in a new and entertaining light. The deal was formalised by Luisa Pastor, president of the Alicante Diputacion, a body that fulfils roughly the same functions as a county council. Mayor Juanjo Berenguer and the town hall’s Culture, Tourism and Education councillors also met representatives from ‘Vive la Ñ’ which is holding language courses in the town this summer.

A benefit to benefit Noah TWO pipe and drum groups will perform in Calpe’s Casa de Cultura for nine-year-old Noa on Saturday. As The Euro Weekly News reported last year, Noa contracted meningitis when she was 14-months-old, leaving long term aftereffects. She needs special physiotherapy and goes each day to a Campello school for the brain-damaged but her Spanish parents have to pay for her treatment and their travelling expenses. Noa has a special strength that brings out the best in people, say those who know her. “Yes, that’s true,” agreed her father Marino. “People are super-supportive and we’re really grateful for all the help we receive.” The idea of the pipe and drum performance on Saturday (February 1) in Calpe came from the ‘Xirimiters’ themselves, Marino added. A second recital is planned for Benitachell in a few months’ time with all proceeds going to help Noa’s family.

Tax break will help fiestas THE IVA value-added tax on works of art will fall from 21 to 10 per cent. Organisers of Alicante City’s June Hogueras fire fiestas welcomed central government’s decision to reduce the tax which rose from 8 to 21 per cent in September 2012. This made a great difference to the cost of the Hogueras, burnt each year on June 24 in Alicante City and other Costa Blanca towns. The bonfires mean more than a yearly fiesta, the Alicante Hogueras Federation said, as they bring €37 million to the city each year and provide more than 10,000 jobs.

Social employment scheme ‘a success’ THE second phase social of Javea’s employment programme has ended. The two groups of 15 workers employed for three-month periods did “a grand job,” said Javea’s Environment and Services Councillor Doris Courcelles. An invitation to Tomorrowland FILMING ‘Tomorrowland’ starring George Clooney and Hugh Laurie continues this week in Valencia City. “I haven’t seen George Clooney,” admitted the city’s 65-year-old mayor Rita Barbera, who has never married. She rejected rumours that the city authorities were banned from the Tomorrowland set at the City of the Arts and Sciences where the sci-fi fantasy is being filmed. “That’s a whopping great lie,” the mayor said, as she had been invited to visit the set and watch filming, Barbera revealed. “Perhaps I’ll go,” she added.

Poet and painter meet for first time THE poet Francisco Brines recently held a literary meeting with pupils from the La Nucia institute. The encounter took place in the Sala Llevant at the Auditorium, where an exhibition currently pays homage to the life and work of the prizewinning 82-year-old poet. Joan Castejon, one of Valencia’s leading artists, also has an exhibition of his work in the Sala Llevant. He and Brines already knew and admired each other’s work but had never met before coming together in La Nucia. At the end of the meeting with the institute pupils, the two men were introduced by Culture Councillor Pedro Lloret. A ‘passionate’ discussion followed, the councillor said later, with both exchanging views on painting, poetry and art in general.

Speaking in Madrid during the recent Fitur trade fair, Navarro described in detail the resort’s different publicity operations. The 23 different media promotions, which have a €200,000 budget, include 25 half-minute television spots on Sky’s Holiday and Cruise Channel, aimed at 14 million viewers. The town will appear in Take A Break magazine as well as the Daily Mirror’s Holidays and Getaways supplement and the National Geographic Traveller. Advertisements are also due to appear at rugby pitches, following an agreement with the Rugby Super League and Challenge Cup. Benidorm’s existing arrangement with the Jet2 airline with its weekly 623 Alicante flights continues with a shared advertising campaign on several Sky channels in March. This is Benidorm’s most ambitious campaign in recent years, said Navarro, who stressed the loyalty of UK visitors and their importance to Benidorm.

Money for old rope THE Valencia regional parliament adjourned on December 20 but MPs have not yet finished their Christmas holidays. The honourable members, who earn more than €3,000 a month, are not expected back to work until February 12, although this could be delayed until February 19, parliamentary sources have revealed. The MPs can look forward to another 18-day holiday over Easter, followed by summer holidays lasting from July 25 until September 24. And, as it did last year, Parliament will adjourn once more on December 20.

Foreign residents drifting away SIXTEEN Marina Alta towns lost 1,520 foreign residents last year. Nevetheless, the area still has one of the Valencian Community’s largest foreign populations, with 43.67 per cent of registered inhabitants born outside Spain. The area’s 33 municipalities have a total population of 201,440 inhabitants, of whom 87,973 are nonSpanish. In contrast Benitachell, where

71.35 per cent of residents are foreign, gained another 14 last year. Lliber, with a foreign census of 70.30 per cent gained 25. Most of those leaving Spain were workers drawn to the area during the building boom, particularly those from Colombia and Ecuador. The Marina Baja’s British and German communities remained stable with 31,042 and 15,591 residents respectively.

Plans for ‘Virgin’ beach GANDIA’S spectacular coastline includes the untouched 2.8 kilometres of L’Auir beach. “It is the jewel in the crown,” declared Gandia Mayor Arturo Torro during his recent visit to the Fitur tourist trade fair in Madrid. He has ambitious plans for the 1.5 million square metre area and last year invited suggestions for its development, offering €54,000 in prizes for the best proposals. These had to include “two or three hotel complexes” close to the beach’s southern boundary. The rules also stipulated another complex adjoining the mouth of the Xeraco River, plus single-family homes, restaurants and leisure centres. The competition was held “for ideas only,” Torro now insists. The 11

The truth finally comes out... EURO WEEKLY NEWS directors Michel and Steven Euesden finally got their day in court to fight the attacks of the founder of The Entertainer, Lenox Napier. Napier, now based in Mojacar, Almeria, subjected them to years of written insults and attacks online, an Almeria court heard. He claimed that the Euesdens had stolen from him the brand The Entertainer, the newspaper which he founded and which preceded the Euro Weekly News (EWN). However, evidence was presented in court to prove that the brand he sold them did not belong to him and that it was mortgaged. Upon becoming aware of these two facts, the Euesdens decided not to go ahead with the option to buy, but not before they had already paid more than €500,000, the court was told. In addition, assets of Napier’s

company, Paperweight SA, were allegedly hidden to avoid outstanding creditors. None of this information had been made available to the Euesdens upon entering the agreement. It was also proved in court that all monies agreed for the rental of the brand were paid in full, although this was never notarised. Napier got The Entertainer brand back, but the money he had been paid was not returned to the Euesdens, who also had to pay off hundreds of thousands of euros in debts hanging over the newspaper. They then had to endure a campaign of personal and professional attacks while starting anew to make EWN the strong media product that it is today. In court, Napier refused to answer the questions put by the prosecution, and is facing two

years in prison for defamation and fraud. At this time, EWN is seeking no monetary compensation for damages. Despite his claims that the brand was ‘stolen’ from him, Napier never took the case to court, and instead insulted the Euesdens, although his defence claimed that words like ‘a***holes’ and ‘fraudsters’ had been ‘misinterpreted’. His section ‘Weenie Watch’ written on his website in an attempt to discredit them, was removed in 2010 under a court order as it was defamatory not only against the Euesdens but also the hardworking, loyal team at EWN. He posted false accounts of their financial status online and insulting e-mails were sent to individual clients of EWN, written to appear as if they came from Steven Euesden.

STOOD THEIR GROUND: Steven and Michel Euesden. Despite how damaging this hate campaign was to advertisers and the EWN brand itself, the Euesdens never stooped to his level. They have received no support from the local press, but have trusted in their co-workers and the Spanish legal system. Although it has been a nerveracking experience, and led to a long period of suffering, they are confident that justice will prevail. More information will follow, but in the meantime, the Euesdens and all the team at EWN want to thank our loyal advertisers and readers, as without them, they feel they would have given up the fight long ago.

JAVEA’S Original Charity Shop and Library gave €64,589 in donations last year. “This brilliant amount has been due to our clients, our very hardworking voluntary staff and our donors, and of course we cannot forget our local businesses,” said a Charity Shop spokesperson. The donations went to local institutions, organisations and charities including the Keira Appeal, the British Legion, Javea’s Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Red Cross, MABS and Emaus. There was a helping hand for individuals, too, and the Charity Shop was able to replace the parish priest’s bicycle after his was stolen. “We pride ourselves on helping as many worthy causes as we possibly can. A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone responsible. You made this happen,” the Shop said.

MARINA OLCINA, Alicante City’s first female councillor, died recently in Madrid aged 92. A member of the Communist party, Olcina became a councillor in 1938 when she was only 17. Imprisoned three times after the Spanish Civil War, she lived for some

years in Algeria, returning to Spain during the last years of the Franco regime. Olcina lived in Madrid with one of her daughters but returned occasionally to Alicante. She always missed the city and said the years she spent there as a young woman were the happiest of her life.

British Olympic stars in Benissa THE heated indoor pool of Benissa had a visit by the Brownlee brothers, the British world triathlon and Olympic sport stars. The athletes chose the facility for a training session as mayor of Benissa, Juan Bautista Rosello and the councillor for Sports, Arturo Poquet, took the opportunity to greet them and they also received many congratulations from the two athletes about the magnificent sporting facilities that Benissa has. Protest against shorter hours THIRTY workers at the Culture Department of the Junta de Andalucia staged a protest against planned summer schedules which will leave Almeria Castle closed for most of the week. The protest took place at the doors of the Museum of Almeria where opening hours have been cut along with those of the Alcazaba monument. Workers read out a statement prepared by the chairman of the culture committee, Lorenzo Cara, complaining about ‘the drastic reduction in hours of more than 60 per cent compared with the previous year’. The statement continued: “It is viewed with sadness that the Junta does not know the importance of these centres. Closing the Museum of Almeria in the evenings hurts the city, its tourism and its workers.” This year Almeria celebrates its millennium year and the 80th anniversary of the museum. The Alcazaba is due to open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm to 10pm only. This is after a record number of visitors last year. Cara added: “What image are we projecting as a friendly city with its history and heritage when one of the most visited landmarks in Andalucia and one of the most important museums in Spain is closed for the summer in the afternoon?” The workers have announced another ALMERIA CASTLE: To be closed. protest for next week.

SPAIN has been told it is flouting the European maximum working hours and rest break directive for Guardia Civil officers. The government’s claim that the officers were not covered by the directive has been dismissed by the European Commission (EC), which has effectively said officers are just like any other worker. The EC has now asked Spain to respect Civil Guards’ rights to minimum rest periods and the 48-hour limit on average weekly working time, as required by the Working Time Directive. member states may exclude managing executives or other persons with autonomous decision-taking powers from the 48-hour limit to average weekly working time and minimum rest periods. However, this, said the commission, only applies to people with “genuine and effective autonomy over both the amount and the organisation of their working time,” which it said, was not the case for the majority of the Civil Guard workers concerned. The Spanish pointed to the fact that the directive also permits member states to exclude from the provisions on minimum rest periods activities involving the need for continuity of service or requiring a permanent presence in order to protect property and persons. That, the Spanish government said, clearly gave an exclusion to on-duty Guardia Civil over rest periods and maximum working weeks. But the commission decided that the directive only gives this exclusion if the workers concerned are given time off in lieu, which Spanish law does not guarantee.

German estate agent grows 48.5 per cent GERMAN real estate company Engel & Voelkers AG registered a massive 48.5 per cent growth in Spain in 2013. The company has been present in Spain since 1999, and is the world leader of high-end property sales. The value of property sold by Engel & Voelkers in 2013 reached more than €435 million (compared with the previous year’s €293 million). The marked increase is in contrast to the adverse situation still faced by the Spanish real estate market. According to the Ministry of Public Works, sales in the first nine months of 2013 (€25,804 million) showed a decrease of 15.6 per cent from the same period in 2012 (€30,567 million). But the good news for sellers is that prices went up, with the average price for top-end property coming in at €719,759. Likewise, the number of Engel & Voelkers’ rental transactions also increased over the year prior, though the average price was less in keeping with the overall market trend of lower rental prices. In 2013, they facilitated 435 rental contracts with a median price of just under €2,500 a month, where in 2013 the figures stood at 307 rentals at an average price of a little over €2,800 a month.

Pat on the back, but no room for complacency A TOP Eurocrat has congratulated Spain on its exit from a banks’ bailout programme, but warned there is no room for complacency. The Spanish financial sector bailout programme has now formally ended 18 months after it started. Vice-President Olli Rehn of the European Commission, said: “Spanish financial markets have stabilised, banks have increased liquidity, their solvency

position remains comfortable, deposits have been rising and access to funding markets has been improving. “The restructuring of banks having received state aid is well under way, guided by the restructuring plans adopted by the European Commission. The governance, regulatory and supervisory framework of the banking sector has been significantly strengthened, so as

to ensure that the irresponsible practices which led to the crisis in the first place will not be repeated.” He continued: “The programme has achieved its twin objectives of repairing and reforming the Spanish financial sector, and in so doing, helping to create a sound basis for the economic recovery. These efforts have been carried out alongside major structural reforms aimed at restoring

competitiveness, and significant fiscal consolidation to ensure the sustainability of public finances.” But he added that despite the successes of 2013, there was still a long way to go. “The challenges facing Spain remain considerable and there should be no complacency. Efforts must continue to deliver a steady and sustained fall in unemployment, which remains dramatically high. Reforms must

be pursued and fiscal consolidation must proceed as agreed.” Ending on a positive note, he added. “Nonetheless, today we can conclude that the programme has worked. Thanks to the Spanish authorities’ determined efforts and the support and solidarity of the euro area member states, confidence in the Spanish economy has returned, and justifiably so.”

Women from lower socioeconomic backgrounds were found to be disillusioned with sex for a number of striking reasons. Investigators report that poorer women are more prone to having unprotected sex, so the risks and worry that go alongside this can weigh on the mind and take the fun out of sex. Those women struggling with finances were also reported to be more likely to find themselves on the receiving end of sexual abuse, and less likely to seek help

from organisations that might be able to help them get out of an abusive situation. In contrast, wealthy women were found to be more aware of their needs and had more freedom to develop their sexuality. The security of money appears to have given women from higher socioeconomic backgrounds the gift of more selfconfidence and control to make decisions about their love-lives that ultimately make them happy. All in all, however, the Spanish don’t fare too badly in the bedroom, with the majority of men and women surveyed saying they were very satisfied or quite satisfied with their sex-life in general! MONEY MATTERS: Rich women have better sex.

According to a new report from Barcelona, which analysed the Spanish National Sexual Health Survey, investigators found that women with higher socioeconomic status report greater sexual satisfaction. That’s right, girls, the more cash you carry in your purse, the more fun you have in the bedroom, or anywhere else the mood takes you. The sexual dissatisfaction or satisfaction has little to do with skills between the sheets, but more to do with the amount of control a woman feels she has over her life, and love-life.

TWO Spanish cities - Malaga and Barcelona - are amongst the six finalists shortlisted for the first European Capital of Innovation award, or iCapital. An independent panel of experts has agreed on the six finalists, the others being Espoo (Finland), Grenoble (France), Groningen (Netherlands), and Paris (France) for the €500,000 prize. The money will go to the city building the best ‘innovation ecosystem’ - connecting citizens, public organisations, academia, and business - with a view to helping the city scale up its efforts in this field. The winner will be announced at the Innovation Convention 2014, Europe’s

premier innovation event in Brussels on March 10 and 11. Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, said: “The response to this competition was impressive, with 58 European cities applying. This demonstrates that there is real interest among European public administrations to boost innovation and modernise and improve services for citizens.” Malaga was shortlisted for an urban regeneration model where people and industries co-operate and spur growth; and Barcelona for introducing new technologies to ‘bring the city closer to citizens’.

Looking abroad to survive AS hard as it is in an economy like Spain’s where educated youths are genuinely having a hard time finding employment, my thoughts are drawn to African immigrants I see on the beaches, some of whom I engage in conversation. After hearing their stories, one truly finds out what it means to face a dangerous alternative by looking abroad just to survive. The courage it takes to leave everything you’ve ever known and head to a place where you know people won’t welcome you and where you’re not even guaranteed work speaks to 1) the guts such risk-taking requires and 2) the desperation of the situation one is leaving. Some of them are actually quite educated and if I had a business, I’d hire them. And for those that weren’t educated in a school, I don’t really care because they’ve certainly been educated in life. At least in Spain those who can’t find the work they’ve been trained for still have access to healthcare, for example, or at least they’re with their families who might help a bit. This is not to discount the truly hard situation youths in Malaga face with unemployment. It’s just to say that, if you open your eyes and look around, you’ll find someone in a much worse situation than yourself, which will hopefully boost your optimism about your own situation. Spend more SO the Spanish government has signed up to a Youth Guarantee with the European Commission, to provide jobs or education to young people (Finance, Issue 1490). While every little helps, the Spanish Government should be doing much more for the younger generation. When I left home in the UK I went straight to university, while friends who chose a different route went into apprenticeships. The point being that there was something to do for everyone.

I love it here! It is still cheaper than the UK, less crowded and most definitely warmer (the people as much as the climate). In Spain with youth unemployment standing at over 50 per cent there is NOTHING for the young to do. Education opportunities have been cut back, apprenticeships are rare. All in the name of austerity. The solution? Invest in the country’s future. It is short sighted in the extreme to deny youngsters further education. Cut backs in education budgets must be reversed if Spain is to move forward. Disastrous policy CHINA’S one-child policy was an economic disaster. The hazards of labour shortages and an aging population have emerged, and China’s social-security system hasn’t been set up yet. I WONDER if the Regional/ National Governments are determined to wipe out small businesses? According to the papers the Murcia government wouldn’t pay Ryanair a subsidy for bringing in customers to the region (although they were offering the subsidy to Air Berlin). As a result, Ryanair cancelled nearly all their winter flights from October to March. This means anyone from the UK that wants a winter break in this part of Spain has to fly into Alicante and are not likely to drive or taxi down to this region, so they head for Benidorm or similar. Now I see in the EWN (Costa Blanca South, Issue 1485) ‘Expats could be hit by rental law’ forcing anyone with a second home to licence it before renting out. Surely this will force many to consider it no longer worthwhile to keep these properties on, pushing even more houses onto an already saturated market and resulting in more losses of revenue to the councils. Is there not to be any consultation with the people likely to be affected before these laws are pushed through? John Bingham (By email)

Police relief I READ in your paper about ‘Benidorm bobbies’ patrolling the streets in high tourism areas (Costa Blanca North, Issue 1490) - what a relief! I have an apartment near that area which I visit a couple of times a year and am so pleased to hear the police are taking local crime seriously. Obviously pickpockets and con artists are attracted to an area so full of tourists, and over the years I have become increasingly nervous about going out on my own. I’ve just returned from my winter holiday, and am looking for flights for summer already. Now I know the area is a little safer, I can’t wait to come back. Pitfalls of being controversial... O

NE of the pitfalls of scribing on controversial subjects is being taken out of context. The BBC is a past master at it. It entails pulling a section out of someone’s writing or speech and quoting it without any reference to the accompanying text or dialogue. Well, those who participate in this practice are about to have a field day, because my subject this week is racism, or to be more precise, what I consider reversed racism. I don’t have many black friends. I don’t feel this is in any way my fault or choice, it is simply that black people are more inclined to mix with others of the same pigmentation. I think the white races have bent over backwards in the fight for equality for black people, even going to war for their beliefs. Personally, I am delighted that all over the western world they are accepted on equal terms as white people and have achieved

Can anyone tell me therefore why they always appear to be the first to play the race card? The recent case of the young thug shot by police was blamed on racism, which was in itself ridiculous. Something I caught on Facebook last week was exsinging star Linda Lewis, decrying the fact that there had been no black solo artists in the charts for some years. She inferred this was due to race. I suppose it has nothing to do with the fact that black artists only seem to churn out rap or ‘gangsta’ music these days. (Where are all the Johnny Mathises, and Whitney Houstons, I wonder!?) I didn’t hear any

Hi Leapy, Keep up the good work with the column! My father lies in a grave in Dunkirk. He fought to keep Britain free and now we are giving it away! I watch Question Time on the BBC and sometimes I think the audience is hand-picked. These stupid politicians keep saying Europe has open borders, so we have to let everyone come to Britain. RECENTLY we discussed the important winter cutback and clean up in your garden and suggested that you shred as much of the prunings and weeds as you can. This week and next we discuss the art of shredding and in the following edition on February 13 we will look at the making of good compost which is not always easy here in Spain. In case you have never owned a shredder we start from the first principles. What does a shredder do? At each seasonal clean up,

SHREDDER: Check safety guard. especially the major winter cleanup, a good shredder will chop up most, if not all, prunings and weeds into easy to handle small

pieces just right for the compost heap or reducing the number of sacks of garden rubbish you need to dispose of. The garden shredder is probably the most important machine for gardeners in Spain. Especially if gardening according to organic/ecological principles. What are the benefits? a) No need for smoky bonfires. b) The shredded material is excellent for mixing with • Kitchen waste to create a balanced compost heap. • Manure and leaf mould in creating no dig beds for the vegetable garden. • Kitchen waste and manure to prepare trenches for next year’s beans. c) The shredded material makes a good mulch for around the base of shrubs and trees. Shredder is important gardening tool From Page 53 d) If you don’t yet have a compost heap the material is easily bagged for disposal. What are the negatives? However, although very useful, the shredder has a number of potential problems. a) It is noisy. So don’t use during siesta times or on a Sunday morning. b) The machine can be dangerous if not used and maintained properly. c) Shredding takes more time than having a bonfire, filling a skip or taking bags of winter clean up rubbish to a legal local tip. Tips for buying a shredder 1. Buy a machine that will cope with the volume of waste produced by your winter clean up. 2. Check that the feed tube has a good safety guard that allows easy feeding but the impossibility of putting your hand in! 3. Ask for a demonstration of how the machine can be dismantled to clean the blade after use or if you have a jam up when using. It should only take a few minutes.

4. If you know anyone with a shredder ask them for advice. 5. If you want to shred a long distance from the house it may be worth considering a petrol driven shredder to avoid a long electric lead. What is the choice? There are many different models on the market. Some are electrically operated and others petrol driven. The main variations are as follows. 1. Top or side loading. We prefer the first. 2. One or two blades - the two blade models process material quicker. 3. Height above the ground - this affects the size of container that you can put under the outlet and ease of loading without having to use a step. Always simulate how you would have to use a machine before considering buying it. 4. Ease of clearing blockages check this with the shop. Some models have reversible blades, others quick dismantling bolts. Some side loading machines take some time - not the thing you need

Electrically driven machines are best for small gardens when an electric socket won’t be far away, but long trailing leads across large plots are not safe so it’s best to opt for a petrol model. Prices do vary from one shop to another so do check your local agricultural cooperative, tool shops and eBay before making a final decision.

In making your final selection recognise that the biggest machine is not necessarily the best, especially for the average garden. In some areas it is possible to hire shredders. Check your pine trees for processionary caterpillars PEOPLE living close to pine forests or with pine trees on their property need to be aware of processionary caterpillars which will soon be on the move once again. The pine processionary is often seen as a pest in coniferous forests. It is controlled to some extent by predators, parasites and viruses which attack the moth at different stages of its life-cycle. The life-cycle is normally annual but may extend over two years. Moths lay their eggs high

on pine trees. After hatching, the larvae eat pine needles building white silken. Any time from February to April, depending on weather conditions, the caterpillars are fully grown and ready to leave their nests and move down the tree in their characteristic procession. It is during this procession that people need to be cautious, particularly pet owners who should keep dogs away from the caterpillars.

The hairs of the caterpillar larvae cause extreme irritation to the skin. They can also eject hairs when threatened or stressed which penetrate and irritate all areas of exposed skin and allergic reactions may follow in susceptible individuals and particularly in dogs. On the pine trees it is common to see cocoons hanging down so avoid walking your dog where there are infected trees and keep children away.

In the survey of 330,000 homes throughout the country, the Basque country topped the list of the most expensive square metres at €3,000. Meanwhile, Toledo was the cheapest at less than €1,000 per square metre. The Idealista.com survey also concluded that second-hand homes in Spain have slowed their price drop and are only 7.4 per cent cheaper than last year with

an average per-square-metre price of €1,735. Only two provinces, Lugo and Orense, finished out 2013 with a rise in prices compared to 2012. Another relevant fact brought to light by the survey is that in many communities, price drops had been quite steep. For example, Lerida had a drop of 53.5 per cent, and Zaragoza had a 47.6 per cent drop. Since the recession started, it has been a buyer’s market as house prices have dropped by an overall 20 per cent.

Although technically skyscrapers, they do not approach the 50 floor skyscrapers recently proposed - and turned down - in Marbella. The most conspicuous of the city’s projected skyscrapers is to be built on the Avenida de Juan XXIII where plans exist for four separate towers rising to between 29-35 storeys. The original plan called for even more storeys which had to be reduced due to interference with air space and rights of way in relation to Malaga international airport. Another three towers of 22 storeys each are planned in the Torre del Rio section, with another two of 30 storeys each planned for the Martiricos project near the Guadalmedina riverbed. In comparison to other large

skyscrapers in Spain, those planned for Malaga are not exceptionally tall. The Torre Espacio in Madrid, though not the tallest of the Cuatro Torres of Madrid in terms of height, has the most floors of any Spanish skyscraper with 56 floors, almost double that of those planned for Malaga. Benidorm’s Grand Hotel Bali has 52 floors, while the Torre Mapfre in Barcelona has 44. Malaga’s acceptance of the plans stands in contrast to that of its neighbouring towns on the Mediterranean coast. Marbella, a fellow Costa del Sol hotspot, has rejected the idea of skyscrapers in the face of public opposition. Marbella’s limits for real estate are capped at six floors on top of a ground floor. The next highest allowance within the province of Malaga is that of the town of Fuengirola, which allows up to eight storeys in certain parts.

SPAIN registered a 22 per cent overall rise in holiday rentals in December. Houses in Andalucia, Baleares, Canaries, Valencia, Cataluña and Madrid were the most in demand. Spain is the third most popular destination for holiday rentals. Thirty-four per cent of its visitors came from the UK, 33 per cent from Italy, and 22 per cent from France. Tenerife and Malaga rose a dramatic 59 per cent in comparison to the same period last year. Mallorca rose 28 per cent, Costa Brava 18 per cent and Costa Blanca 13 per cent. The head representative of Homelidays in Spain commented that closing the year on such a positive note augurs well for the next season. Home sales to foreigners in the third term of last year rose by 12 per cent with the highest selling communities being Andalucia, Valencia, Cataluña, Baleares and Canarias. Last year 9,502 properties were sold to foreigners which, though not as high as the peak in 2006 with 30,000 sales, is a marked rise on previous years. For rentals and sales, foreigners principally look for homes in quiet areas, well-connected by road and, above all, near the coast. This means the Mediterranean coast is one of the most sought after with Russians, British and Germans being the biggest spenders.

TOYOTA’S brand new sports car concept leapt from videogame screens to the stage during the North American International Auto Show. First devised by Toyota’s Calty Design Research in the Sony PlayStation Gran Turismo game environment, the new FT-1 was unveiled during the show held in Detroit (US). The name FT-1 stands

for ‘Future Toyota,’ and the number ‘1’ represents what their designers consider the ultimate expression of a Toyota coupe design. The project started nearly two years ago with the hard work of the Calty design team. “The FT-1 is a dreamproject for a designer and car enthusiast like myself,” said Alex Shen, Calty’s Studio Chief Designer. Inlets, ducting, and vents are features of the exterior design that help reinforce its track–ready nature with elements of purposeful airflow management. At higher speeds a retractable rear wing deploys and tilts forward to create additional downforce. The front engine rearwheel drive configuration locates the

cockpit far rearward within the wheelbase to improve weight distribution. This design element also helps create a classic sports car proportion. The cockpit’s wraparound windshield and side glass openings are a distinct nod to the design of the Toyota 2000GT. The interior locates the driver at the controls behind an F1 inspired steering-wheel. A delta-shaped display zone surrounds and integrates the driver to provide a sense of being connected to the vehicle.

DREAM PROJECT: To represent the ultimate Toyota. The cockpit’s sense of minimalism adds to the purposefulness of the driver-focused environment with an emphasis on light weight components. A colour heads-up display keeps the driver’s attention on the road ahead, with vital information projected just above the steering wheel within the driver’s line of sight. In preparation for pitching the concept to Toyota management, Calty worked with Polyphony Digital, creators of the Gran Turismo driving simulator, to bring FT-1 to life in a virtual world. La Vila triumph LA VILA won 37-20 against CAU Valencia as the visiting team could not stop ‘The Jones’ in full swing. From the first minutes of the meeting, the local side showed its strength with a powerful attack and solid defence. That led to them going in at half time 16-0 ahead thanks to three penalties and a try. In the second half CAU looked to get back in the game and got on the scoreboard, but it was not enough as La Vila’s players demonstrated their ability to keep their team shape. Lopez, Villegas and Davies scored trys to get the bonus offensive point.

Benitachell Bowls Club are cup winners again

LAST Thursday, BBC started the home leg of the annual Friendship Cup versus Calpe with a five-shot deficit from November’s match. Everything went Benitachell’s way, with big wins on all four rinks and a 110-45 scoreline on the day. The aggregate score of 178-118 means that BBC retain the cup for another year. BBC Jaguars met BBC Lions in the last of the Cats ‘fights’ this season. The match proved to be a nail-biter to the end with the Lions securing a 6-4 win and maintaining their lead at the top of the League Table. The Tigers were away to Calpe and, after a hardfought match, managed to secure two points.

A first for Warblers at Don Cayo ORBA Warblers Golf Society played at Don Cayo Golf Course, a first for the club. The best score of the day was recorded by Glynn

Braidley who scored 37 points to top Division One. In second place was Fred Cooley (35) and third was Sylvia Mortensen (35).

Leading Division Two was David Edwards (35) followed by Margaret Hoare and Peter Gibson both scoring 31 points.
