Getting away with it Tourists who assault police escape lightly ASSAULTING a policeman rarely has grave consequences these days. It can even work out cheap, claimed Manuel Soler, the SUP police union’s Benidorm secretary. A tourist who turns aggressive and punches a policeman without causing serious physical harm usually gets away with a fine of between €200 and €300, Soler said. “What’s more, he will be out on the street next day, often without paying anything at all. In fact, the majority don’t turn up in court when summonsed. A ‘search and arrest’ order will be issued but it ends up forgotten in a drawer,” he added. Members of Benidorm’s National and Local Police Forces were attacked on 114 occasions last year. Most of the incidents involved
violent foreigners, according to Soler, and were triggered by things getting out of control.
This was particularly true of the ‘English zone’ in and around Calle Mallorca, he added.
Emblematic supermarket to be auctioned off after 33 years OFFICIAL receivers have decided to put up for auction the oncemighty Supermercado La Nucia. Once one of the few places where foreign residents could buy products they missed from home, it was founded by brothers Enrique
and Juan Bautista Mendoza just over 33 years ago. It gradually but inexorably fell victim to the economic crisis and the brothers failed to reach agreement over the supermarket’s future and it is now in receivership.
An auction was decided on to ensure that the business continues to operate and the 34 employees do not lose their jobs. It will be held on January 23 in Alicante, with the reserve price set at €2,213,539.

A 49-YEAR-OLD Spaniard has been charged with stealing 47 lambs, two kids and three sacks of feed. His arrest followed a failed robbery in Benissa and was the culmination of an investigation by the Guardia Civil’s ROCA unit, formed specifically to combat theft in rural areas. ROCA officers believe he was also responsible for livestock thefts in Altea, Alfaz del Pi and Villajoyosa between March and December last year.
The suspect allegedly broke locks and padlocks on the many corrals still to be found in these localities. Only small animals were taken, and never more than 10 at a time so that they could be easily transported to his own smallholding in Calpe, the Guardia Civil revealed. He supposedly sold the livestock to acquaintances as well as members of the local Muslim community. Having agreed on a price, he would then deliver the slaughtered animal directly to the buyer’s home.

The strain of the train... RESIDENTS in Alicante City’s Calle Bono Guarner are victims of the AVE’s success. The Alicante-Madrid high-speed train service has won praise and passengers since last June, even stealing custom from airline Iberia. Nonetheless, the AVE is less popular with those who have to live beside it.
Life is no longer the same in Calle Bono Guarner, said residents who soon discovered that noise from the new station encroached on their daily lives and disturbed their sleep. Following a rash of complaints, the track and infrastructure operator ADIF promised to reduce noise levels. Arrivals and departures announcements have been
suppressed at night, but the racket made by the compressors used for cleaning the trains continues. Decibel levels still exceed the legally-permitted limit, residents claimed. A ‘noise map’ is being prepared and firms working at the station have been asked to minimise noise pollution.

EEKERS of knowledge are celebrating the 13th anniversary of Wikipedia. The free internet encyclopaedia, supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, was launched on January 15, 2001, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. The name comes from ‘Wiki’ (a type of collaborative website/the Hawaiian word wiki, meaning ‘quick’) and encyclopaedia, and it has become the web’s largest and most popular work of general reference, with an estimated 365 million readers. Volunteers worldwide write Wikipedia’s 30 million articles in 287 languages. The English Wikipedia alone has more than 4.4 million articles.

However, a 2005 investigation in Nature showed that science articles came close to the level of accuracy of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The Spanish Wikipedia was launched in May 2001 and has 1,067,597 articles. It is the eighth largest Wikipedia for the number of articles and the third most popular Wikipedia for the number of page views.

Fewer residents in the Marina Alta THE Marina Alta’s population is declining. On January 1 last year, 19 of the area’s 33 municipalities had fewer inhabitants. Calpe (population 29,442) lost 108 residents although TeuladaMoraira fared worse, with 126 names removed from the ‘padron’ (municipal roll). Denia remained unchanged with 44,450 residents but Javea’s population rose by 166 to 33,249. Benissa’s population grew by 124 from 13,803 to 13,932 and in Benitachell another 22 names were added to the census, bringing its population up to 5,720. Inland, the statistics told a different story and already-small Vall de la Gallinera lost 9.9 per cent of its population to become even smaller with 609 inhabitants. The 2013 census also bears testimony to the economic crisis, which frustrated the plans of

The architect’s designs ‘breathtaking’ according to admirers, but ‘pure Disney’ according to detractors - often run into trouble. The roof leaks at Domecq’s Ysios winery in Laguardia (Alava) and his bridge over the Grand Canal is too slippery, complained the Venice authorities. He designed an equally slippery bridge over the River Nervion in Bilbao.
NEWS The road to happiness BENISSA has high hopes that 2014 will be the year the town gets its bypass. “That would be the best news,” said Mayor Juan Bautista Rosello. The president of the regional government, Alberto Fabra, revealed last September that money for the project had been allowed for in the national government’s 2014 budget. The announcement was greeted with satisfaction in Benissa where the N332 main road, one of the most used in Spain, still crosses the town centre. To general disappointment only €200,000 was eventually allocated for the road which was approved in 2007 and begun in 2009. Work halted that same year after the contractor ran out of money. Valencia’s regional parliament has now accepted a motion presented by socialist groups, urging it to ask Madrid to release more cash for the project.

More jobs around ALICANTE PROVINCE created employment for the first time in nine years in 2013. The number of jobless fell by 8,547 while the number of new subscribers to the Social Security system rose by 3,618. Construction is once again providing work, following the brusque decline that began with the 2008 crisis. The only sector where unemployment increased was agriculture, where 972 people lost jobs. These latest statistics from the State Employment Service (SEPE) were greeted with caution by the unions. Many of the new jobs were temporary and their “precariousness served only to embellish unemployment figures,” according to the CCOO and UGT.
Road death toll down TWENTY-FIVE people were killed in 22 accidents on Alicante Province’s main roads last year. This was 31 per cent lower than the 2012 toll when 33 people lost their lives, according to figures announced by Interior Minister Jorge FernandezDiaz. Ninety-three people died as a result of road accidents in the three Valencian Community provinces, an overall 19 per cent reduction in fatalities. A total of 1,300 people were killed in traffic accidents nationwide in 2013, the lowest figure since 1960, the ministry revealed.

Benidorm Bus Station has a Catch 22 moment BENIDORM Bus Station was built and subsequently run by Alicante promoter Enrique Ortiz. This changed a year ago after the Supreme Court annulled Ortiz’s 50-year concession to run it. Since then the bus station has been in limbo and Benidorm City Hall’s formula to legalise the complex has been ruled out. If all had gone according to plan, bids would have been requested for a new sub-contractor to take over. The concessionary would then compensate Ortiz for his earlier investment. In return, the new contractor would receive authorisation to run the bus station and commercial area. This exceeds the original planning permission by

Flu cases low so far
Skaters’ waltz in the plaza JAVEA TOWN HALL has installed ramps for skateboarders in the Portal del Clot. The plaza, inaugurated in 2008, cost €2 million and was intended to provide a quiet vantage point where residents and visitors could gaze out to sea. Young Javenses thought otherwise and from the outset decided it was ideal for skateboarding, skating and BMX bikes. On the ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ principle, the Youth Department decided to install ramps for the skateboarders in the square. At least it is used, more than one resident has pointed out, unlike the new €6.6 million town hall built by the former council and still empty.
Fourteen more ‘tourist’ towns SOURCE OF WEALTH: Alicante’s sun and sea offer. FOURTEEN Valencian Community towns were designated ‘tourist municipalities’ last year. The region now has 226
municipalities in this category, with the addition of Muchamiel, Relleu, Lliber and Artana bringing Alicante Province’s tally up to 61. The description is official recognition of the efforts made by town halls to maintain one of the community’s principal sources of wealth, said Sebastian Fernandez,
Regional Director General for Tourism. The designation also brings advantages, starting with subsidies for town hall spending on maintenance, conservation and environmental protection. Co-finance is available for improving a tourist municipality’s public spaces as well as all types of tourist services.
THE incidence of flu in the Valencian Community has remained low so far this winter. According to the latest Regional Health Department figures, an average 4.8 cases have been reported for every 100,000 inhabitants. In 87.10 per cent of cases, patients had not been vaccinated, the department said. This underlined the importance of preventative treatment, indicating that only 12.90 per cent of those who had been vaccinated were eventually affected by the flu virus. As yet there are no signs of a flu epidemic, the Health Department added, although cases inevitably increase in January when pupils return to school.
‘BOLLARDS!’ says one San Blas resident FERRAN RAMON I BOIX lives in Alicante City’s San Blas district. Recently the council installed bollards along his street to keep cars off the pavements. Unfortunately for Ramon i Boix, two of them are now blocking the entrance to his garage. They were installed only days before his official ‘keep clear’ plaques arrived from the same city hall that insisted on installing the bollards. He had already paid the first quarterly fee for the plaques and has now learnt that he must pay for the bollards’ removal. “It’s not fair, because that’s money which I won’t get back,” the 60-year-old complained. “We’ve been like this for three months now, and we’re desperate to use our garage again.” Rather than pay a company to do the

Drugs hidden in TVs IN a joint Guardia Civil and Customs surveillance operation, 90 kilos of cocaine were seized at Manises Airport in Valencia, hidden inside 17 televisions. Officers had two Colombians and three Ecuadorians aged between 22 and 31 under surveillance and arrested them when they went to pick up the shipment at the airport.

Naturalisation applications forged TWELVE people have been arrested in Valencia for selling forged documents enabling Latin American immigrants to obtain Spanish nationality. Two more people involved in the deception were arrested in Madrid. All Cubans, they are
accused of charging up to €6,000 for documents appearing to prove that the applicants were the grandchildren of Spaniards who had to leave Spain after the 1936-1939 Civil War. The network, headed by two lawyers, took advantage of the
previous government’s Historic Memory Law which bestowed nationality on the direct descendants of exiles. Police were called in by Valencia’s Prosecutor after documents aroused suspicions that they were forgeries.

First female mayor SPAIN’S first lady mayor lived in Quatretondeta, a small village in inland Alicante Province. Her name was Matilde Perez Molla and it is now 90 years since the governor of the province selected her in 1924. Her family was the wealthiest in the village and Matilde, then a widow of 45, was mayor from 1924 until 1930, a period of change for the village, which included the arrival of electricity and building a fivekilometre road to neighbouring Gorga. Ironically, the population of Quatretondeta currently there are 109 people registered on the municipal roll - is now almost five times smaller than it was in 1924.

located and the time limit for unravelling the crime has expired. The bodies of four people, all Chinese, were discovered in an apartment in Gandia’s Calle
Calderon de la Barca. They had been stabbed with a kitchen knife and other weapons. The fifth body of a woman was discovered in a deep-freeze in the restaurant that she ran. E-cigarette ruling after Fallas VALENCIAN COMMUNITY residents will have to wait for a decision on electronic cigarettes. Partial restrictions on ecigarettes were imposed last month when the Health Department advised against their use in health centres, schools and Social Services installations. A definitive ruling will come once the national government announces its guidelines regarding e-cigarettes, which are increasingly used as a nicotine substitute. Once Madrid has led the way, autonomous regions will shape their own legislation, said Manuel Llombart who heads the Valencia Region’s Health Department. The decision is likely to arrive shortly after the March 19 Fallas fiestas, Llombart revealed.
Benitachell, organic wine-producer MORAIG is a dry white wine made from organic muscatel grapes grown in Benitachell. The wine is the result of the BioMoscatell project, begun last year with town hall backing to
re-establish muscatel-growing on an organic basis. The first crop has now been bottled and sampled by sommelier and wine expert Tonet Puig.
“A clean, brilliant, greenish yellow with a bouquet of muscatel, lychee, mango and anis,” was the verdict. Moraig is also “elegant, refined, astringent and smooth, with a
very good balance in the mouth and on the nose,” Puig added. The first Moraig consignment is a limited edition, strategically distributed at Marina Alta outlets linked to the project.

Centuries’ old tradition revived ‘CANTO DE LA SIBILA’ will be performed at Javea’s San Bartolome church at 8.30pm this Saturday (January 11). The ‘Sibyl’s song’ is a Valencian Mystery Play centring on a seer who foretells the birth of Christ and the Last Judgement. It was introduced by Jaime I following the re-Conquest of Spain from the Moors in 1238 and enacted in monasteries and cathedrals throughout Spain. But it was banned by the Council of Trent in the 16th century when the Church defined its teachings and ruled on what it regarded as heresy. The tradition did not die out in Mallorca and in 2010 was included in Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list and was recently sung in Teulada. Javea is also joining the move to recover the centuries old Valencian tradition in a recital organised by Javea Town Hall’s Culture department. It will be performed by the Juan de Ribera Choir and the Bobila cultural group, who describe their version of the Canto as “a celebration of life and REVIVAL: The Seer’s Song is no longer peace.” banned. ‘Jail kamikaze driver’ call THE family of Jose Alfredo Dolz called for the immediate imprisonment of the driver who caused his death. Dolz died after Ramon Jorge Rios crashed into the farmer’s car after driving five kilometres in the wrong direction on the AP-7 in Polinya del Xuquer (Valencia). The Opel executive was handed a 13-year
sentence for manslaughter but received a government pardon 10 months later. The Supreme Court annulled the pardon following an appeal from the victim’s family, but the government now has three months to appeal against the ruling. The driver is also appealing in a process that could last for several months.

THE emergency services had to treat 59 cases of alcohol poisoning on New Year’s Eve in Alicante Province. This was more than in either of the Valencian Community’s two other provinces, revealed the CICU centre set up to coordinate and deal with emergencies. Medics had to attend to 41 cases in Valencia Province and 12 in Castellon. Episodes of alcohol poisoning were not the only emergencies that the CICI had to handle in Alicante Province, as police were called out to deal with 14 brawls and clashes.

Gatwick airport arrest for Alicante bail-jumper A MAN linked to a 2009 Liverpool shooting has been detained in Gatwick after arriving on an Alicante flight.
Twenty-seven-year-old Michael Farrell was arrested at the airport for using a false passport. Of no fixed abode but originally from
Stockbridge Village in Knowsley, he had allegedly been on the run for four years. He jumped bail in 2009 before answering burglary accusations in court but was later charged with criminal damage and conspiracy to possess a firearm. These events related to an episode in August 2009 when neighbours were woken as shots were fired at an apartment and an unoccupied car. He is also accused of burglary, dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance and ramming a police car. Neat and tidy for the New Year TEULADA TOWN HALL has cleaned up eight plots of municipally-owned land. Murla tower ‘falls short’ MURLA’S church tower collapsed 24 years ago, killing two elderly women. No replacement was made until 2011, when construction company Arcion was contracted to rebuild the tower within 10 months. It was never finished and the project was taken over by another company which has finally removed the scaffolding surrounding the structure. After years of looking forward to seeing the new tower, Murla residents have been left feeling ‘cheated’. Most believe that the ultra-modern 36-metre tower does not fit in with the 16th century fortress-church of St Michael the Archangel, which is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

WASTE: Villena wine worth €875,000 was thrown away.
What a lot to w(h)ine about! THOUSANDS of bottles of Villena wine were poured away in Zhengzhou (China). Thirteen thousand bottles of Spanish wine, most of it from Villena’s Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes co-operative in Alicante Province, allegedly deteriorated on the journey to China. The problem did not originate with the wine, acquired last August, the Chinese distributors stressed. The refrigeration
system failed on the lorry taking the shipment from the port of Qingdao to Zhengzhou on a day when temperatures rose to more than 40 degrees. This impaired its taste, Chinese wine experts pronounced. The distribution company assumed entire responsibility, it said, and was demonstrating its commitment to quality by disposing of the wine. The shipment, worth €875,000, was insured.
NEWS Calpe’s Good Samaritan does it again CALPE resident Dieter Uhlmann has once again aided the needy. Last summer Swiss-born Uhlmann gave Calpe Town Hall €10,000 to help local children whose families are attended to by Social Services. Thanks to his help, it was possible to buy school books and provide food for babies and small children. Then, when Christmas came, he bought tracksuits for the 122 children helped by the Food Bank . Calpe's Charity Shop, Rotary Club and Lions Club, also collaborated with Calpe’s Social Services Department over the holidays. As well as toys, they donated cheques so that approximately 500 people could buy meat, fish and Christmas sweetmeats to supplement the usual Food Bank supplies.

A strong field of 60 cyclists from nearby towns such as Pulpi, Vera, Lorca, Mojacar, and further afield from Granada and Almeria took part in the 58 kilometre race held during the Christmas holidays. It took place on a four kilometre urban circuit with 16 laps, with the early laps very evenly contested by the leading contenders. Eventually an attack from Jose Molina of Team Aguila Bike of Vera Playa broke up the main group. From there Chris Bartlett (Metaltek), the British professional cyclist who was winner of the first edition, led the chasing pack that comprised around 30 cyclists. Bartlett pushed hard to make up the gap alongside Lorcan Manuel Calzado and over the final laps it was between the three cyclists.

The allure of FCC attracts big name SPAIN’S FCC has attracted new suitors. George Soros, the Hungarian-born American magnate, investor and chairman of the Soros Fund Management hedge fund, now owns 3 per of the company. He reputedly paid around €72.39 million and now owns the third-largest individual FCC holding. Soros follows Microsoft founder Bill Gates who acquired a 6 per cent FCC holding for approximately €110 million last October. The rise and fall of FCC followed the same pattern as Spain’s property boom-and-bust economy. Forty per cent of FCC’s revenue from construction, infrastructure and services comes from Spain itself
and both have had a difficult year. The group was badly affected by the burst property bubble through its real estate company Realia, jointly owned with Caja Madrid. Realia succeeded last September in avoiding a creditors’ meeting, the customary prelude to bankruptcy proceedings. Instead it pulled off an €847 million refinancing deal, now reduced to €792 million thanks to BBVA, Santander and CaixaBank, although ‘bad bank’ Sareb also took on part of the Realia debt. Despite FCC’s problems, Gates and Soros are now shareholders. Money talks, it is said, but their actions speak louder than words about the future.

UK economy finally gaining momentum AFTER lagging behind the eurozone and USA economically since the financial crisis, the UK economy finally generated some momentum in the last two quarters of 2013. Strong growth was driven by the return of the British consumer to the UK high street after a long period of household deleveraging. At least in the near term consumers are once again spending money aided in part by a very strong housing market, particularly in London. Britain’s manufacturing and service sectors also showed improvement driven by an easing of credit conditions and a lower pound earlier in the year. Continued low interest rates from the Bank of England and a commitment to keep them on hold until unemployment is below 7 per cent has aided an overall improvement.

The Pound has mirrored the improving economic picture in the UK and is the best performing currency across the major pairs in the last six months. Against the Euro Sterling has risen 4 per cent and against the Dollar it is up 10 per cent since July. Across the eurozone things continue to slowly improve. The European Central Bank (ECB) cut interest rates and is much more dovish in tone, following other central banks in announcing forward guidance of interest rates over the next few years. That is positive for the Euro in the longer term, however, it is the current relative speeds of
POUND: Best performing currency in the last six months. recovery that matter for currencies and the UK is simply growing at a faster rate than the eurozone as a whole. That trend is likely to continue at least for the first quarter of 2014. Looking further ahead, both Ireland and Spain exiting formal bailout programmes is a very positive step. Key to both countries’ progress has been
breaking the negative feedback loop between a country’s overall solvency and that of its banking system. The ECB must be applauded in doing this with its OMT programme. Germany remains the key country within the Euro. German elections passed without major upheaval, with Angela Merkel remaining in power.
The key to how long the PIGS take to return to growth remains the willingness of Germany to adjust, which looks as far away as ever. We can expect several more years of pain across southern Europe before growth returns. What the long term scars of this policy will be in terms of longterm unemployment and lost growth potential is unclear, but it is unlikely to be positive. 2014 is set to be the year that the highly accommodative monetary policy in place across the western world starts to be wound down. Interest rates are likely to rise, only gradually at first but expectations of higher rates tend to be reflected quickly in prices. How consumers and business cope with higher rates will be the main theme in 2014 and will be a major driver of the value of the Pound, Euro and Dollar over the coming months.

Renfe gets some speed up DEMAND for Spain’s AVE high speed train increased by 20.94 per cent over the last 10 months. Rail operator Renfe has had a record year, one of its best ever, the ministry of Public Works announced. Twenty-five million passengers used the AVE and intercity trains between February and the end of December, according to ministry figures. Demand for both trains increased by 13.4 per cent and 20.9 per cent for the AVE alone. Most of Spain’s transport systems have seen a

THE consortium building a third set of locks on the Panama Canal, led by Spanish company Sacyr, has threatened to down tools over huge cost over runs. It wants the Panama Canal Authority to pay more after the price tag ballooned by 50 per cent from an initial €2.27 billion.
NEW car registrations in Spain rose 3.3 per cent in 2013. Sales in December were 18.2 per cent higher than the same month in 2012. Total new car registrations were 722,703 in 2013 compared to 699,549 in 2012.
Bank bailout exit is praised SPAIN has been congratulated for exiting a European bank bailout programme having used less than half the money available to it. The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) financial assistance programme for Spain expired with the Spanish government making a successful exit. Since the programme started in December 2012, the ESM had lent a total of €41.3 billion to the Spanish government for the recapitalisation of the country’s banking sector. Originally up to €100 billion had been made available. Spain will not request any follow-up assistance from the ESM. Klaus Regling, Managing Director of the ESM, said: “Spain’s exit after one year is an impressive success story. Our financial assistance programme has proven instrumental in recapitalising and restructuring Spain’s troubled banks, which are today on a sound footing. Despite the challenges ahead I am confident that the ESM’s support, combined with structural reforms, will allow the Spanish economy to achieve stability and sustainable growth.” ESM financial assistance was provided in the form of debt securities to FROB, the bank recapitalisation fund of the Spanish government, and then channelled to the financial institutions concerned to be paid back over an average 12-and-a-half years. The financial assistance in Spain was the first programme carried out by the ESM.

IT may be all smiles and delight on Christmas morning, but in every household there are always a few insincere ‘thank yous’ also vocalised, as gifts that weren’t on any wish list suddenly stare up at you from torn wrapping paper. Be it a crazy Christmas jumper from Grandma, a DVD from Uncle Bob that you’ve already downloaded or a toaster from Mum, the big question is: how do you get rid of unwanted presents? If you are too embarrassed to ask for the receipt, there really is no point just hiding the unwanted gifts in a drawer in the hope that one day a use will be found for them, just try to return them. By law, shops don’t have to entertain your unwanted gift if you don’t have the receipt, but as it’s the holiday season and we should be spreading joy and goodwill to all, many retailers will do a direct swap for another similarly priced item. Remember that there are also specialist websites which look for particular items, like electronic devices. If all this sounds like too much hassle as Christmas holidays are a time for relaxing and watching movies in a comfortable armchair,
then why not give the unwanted presents away to someone who wants and deserves them. Many charities collect unwanted gifts and use them to brighten up the days of sick children and other needy people. You might not get a financial reward for just giving stuff away but you will receive a jolly good feeling in your heart that you made someone else’s Christmas!
Good news at factory gates THERE was good news for the Spanish economy as manufacturing output bounced back from a dip in November to post a rise last month. The Spanish manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) saw an improvement in operating conditions in December as output and new orders rebounded from a fall in November. But employment and purchasing activity were reduced further. Input cost inflation remained relatively muted, but firms raised their output prices at a solid pace which was the strongest since May 2011. The seasonally adjusted Markit PMI - a composite indicator designed to measure the performance of the manufacturing

economy - moved back above the 50.0 no-change mark in December, posting 50.8 following a reading of 48.6 in November. Modest improvements in operating conditions have been recorded in four of the past five months. Commenting on the data, Andrew Harker, senior economist at Markit and author of the report, said: “The return to growth of the Spanish manufacturing sector at the end of 2013 was a positive sign, largely as it allayed fears that the decline seen in November heralded the start of a new downturn. Rises in output and new orders lay a platform that firms will hope to build on during the new year should tentative improvements in client demand strengthen.”
Manufacturing output increased in December following a fall in the previous month. Moreover, the rate of expansion was solid and the fastest since March 2011. Growth was sharpest at intermediate goods firms, while consumer and investment goods producers also raised output. Increased production was supported by a rise in new business, which also rebounded from a fall in November. Meanwhile, new export orders increased solidly, albeit at a reduced pace. Growth in production outpaced that of new orders in December, and panellists linked this to a fall in backlogs of work. Outstanding business has decreased in four of the
DOLE queues shrank by 107,570 to 4.7 million people out of work in December. The 2.2 per cent fall was the second biggest for the month since records began, Labour Ministry figures show.
Unbelievers A SURVEY by El Mundo newspaper shows that 71 per cent of Spaniards do not believe Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s assertion that the economic recovery will start this year. Most think the country will have to wait until 2015 before things get better.

SPAIN’S annual inflation rate rose to 0.3 per cent in December. In October prices had actually fallen for the first time since 2009, the year in which the economy shrank by 3.7 per cent.
Gloomy stats ACCORDING to consultancy agency Rentrak, Spanish cinema earnings plunged to €508 million in 2013 from €606 million in 2012, down 16 per cent. A hike in IVA tax to 21 per cent from 8 per cent is thought to be largely to blame as 13 million fewer tickets were sold.

Season of goodwill, not greed... IT was lovely to see whole families out on the streets on the evening of January 5 to watch the Three Kings parades. However, what I think should be discouraged is the greed demonstrated by those catching sweets, not only children, but also adults. Twenty-five years ago when we first started going to the parades in Spain, children would be happy to catch a few sweets and those who didn’t would often be handed some by others who had been luckier. Nowadays, they carry bags and umbrellas to attempt to catch more; there is no sharing and I have even seen adults squabbling over a boiled sweet which one was quicker to pick up off the floor. Some parents have very little control over their children and do nothing to keep them from misbehaving or putting themselves in danger. It’s a miracle that there are not more children lost or injured on a night which should be joyous for the little ones. Janis Jamieson, Benalmadena (Malaga)
Help needed IT was surprising to read the letter from Pedro Rodriguez from Benalmadena (Malaga) in last week’s Issue 1487. He commented about how many local Spanish businesses had closed down but noticed that those which were open were managed - and supported - by British people and felt there was a lesson to be learned by Spanish people. Whilst I do not like to generalise, I agree with him that some Spaniards do not do enough to support their local cafés and bars. Often when out walking in Benalmadena, I see Spanish couples and families sitting on public benches eating their own food and drinking their own drink, when within just a few feet of them are comfortable and inviting Spanish bars. I appreciate that times are hard but if each of these ‘self-

I WAS walking in Paloma Park, Benalmadena, on New Year’s Eve when I saw this couple. They were busy building a nest in the warm sunshine but took time out to pose just like expectant parents do! some electrical goods. We purchased three items, decided to put them in the boot of our car before returning to another store to buy some clothing. When we returned to the car park, we noticed that the rear car door window had been smashed and the three electrical items stolen from the boot. We had obviously been spotted by undesirables loitering in the car park. So do not be complacent while shopping at La Zenia Boulevard, and don’t do your shopping in two or more goes. Don’t let your guard down. When you get back to your car go home and complete your shopping on another day. If you are offered a cheap microwave oven, electric kettle or Brita water filter in the pub tonight, beware they might be my stolen items. Happy New Year to you all! I’m an English teacher based in Almeria and often use the stories in the newspaper to design and carry out new tasks in the classroom. Not only can they be used to teach grammar, but also to start interesting debates with my students. In addition, they get to see their reality from a different point of view, something that certainly widens their horizons and helps them become better citizens. My students particularly enjoy controversial topics such as the new abortion law, although they also like to read about charity events in the province. The Meek Mr Osborne And Your Estate The meek shall inherit the earth, according to the Bible. In the case of the UK tax authority, the meek Chancellor levies 40% inheritance tax on estates. If you have two or more heirs, it could mean that George Osborne’s office takes the largest share of your estate unless you plan carefully. The situation is getting worse, with Mr Osborne’s measures expected to drag tens of thousands more British families into the inheritance tax net over the next five years. British expatriates do not escape this tax nearly as easily as most other UK taxes. It will affect your heirs if • You remain a UK domicile (as many British expatriates do) • You own property or other assets in the UK • You or your spouse may return to the UK one day. Inheritance tax is charged on worldwide assets at 40%, over a tax free threshold of £325,000. If you are non-UK domiciled on death, it only applies to UK assets.

The threshold has been frozen at £325,000 since 2009, and is scheduled to remain unchanged until April 2018. Around 176,000 estates are expected to be affected. The freeze is having the desired effect… for the government, with HM Treasury earning more revenue. On the other hand families are losing out on more of their inheritance.
If the threshold had risen with inflation each year, as was the case before 2009, it would be £372,000 today. Families are paying an extra £18,800 in tax as a result. The threshold would rise to £415,000 by 2018 if inflation linked. With it being frozen, estates caught in the tax net will pay an extra £36,000 in tax in 2018. Think what your children or grandchildren could do with this money. Take professional advice and plan to protect your family from this tax. The Treasury is expected to earn around £3.3 billion this tax year from inheritance tax - 14% more than last year, and the third annual increase in a row. With the threshold failing to keep pace with rising house prices, the Treasury is getting an extra windfall. The average house price increased by 5.8% in the year to October 2013 (according to the
Nationwide House Price Index). Savills real estate agency expects them to increase 25% by 2018. Accountancy firm Grant Thornton calculates that the number of estates falling into the inheritance tax trap could double within four years as a result. 42,000 estates will pay tax in 2016/17, compared to 21,000 in 2012/13. This is much more than the previous peak of 34,000 estates in 2006/07. In October 2007, when Mr Osborne was shadow chancellor, he said a Conservative Government would increase the threshold to £1 million to “take the family home out of inheritance tax”. In response the Labour government allowed the £325,000 allowance to be transferred between spouses, potentially increasing the nil rate band to £650,000 for married couples/civil partners. This £650,000 is still far off £1 million. For many, the family home
still falls into the inheritance net, including overseas properties. There are various ways to mitigate inheritance tax for your family and heirs, and save them the headache of having to sort it out. You also need to take Spanish succession tax into account, and understand how the two taxes interact, and plan accordingly. An insult to our intelligence LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

HAT on earth was that arrogant, selfimportant, complete pain in the butt, Keith Vaz thinking of when he elected to greet Eastern Europeans immigrants at Heathrow? What an insult to our intelligence to expect us to perceive this as anything more than a cynical publicity stunt, which actually backfired by showing us all what a pompous, publicity-seeking idiot he is. Perhaps he could be given the job of shaking hands with the hordes who will be pouring into the UK over the next few years. At least it would keep him out of everyone else’s hair for a bit. Why not allow him to host a vast welcome party in Hyde Park, for example? Well, it would be conveniently close to where most

How to claim benefits’ guides could be handed out, housing lists, jobs bingo, food vouchers, ‘Pick a Doctor’ stalls. The list is endless. And to top it all the chance for the BBC to send half of their interviewing force to hear all their hard-luck stories. I did also wonder in the light of
this wonderful open border policy, just how many British, or indeed French or Germans, landed in Bulgaria or Romania this week to take advantage of the opportunities on offer there. Give us a break! This is once again slashing open another vast wound in the UK’s torso, through which to haemorrhage money. If half the 200,000 expected this year manage to send money back to their families, even at the conservative estimate of some
£400 a month, this amounts to £40 million a month or £480 million a year. Add to this the child benefits they can claim for dependants in these countries and you’re looking at untold millions pouring out of the British coffers. It’s a joke. A cruel joke on the UK populace. The lily-livered politicians in their, up to now, non-immigrant impregnated country retreats should be ashamed of themselves. But they won’t be, will they? Nothing will be done until a few years’ time when they find them actually camping on their own doorsteps. When that happens watch ’em all rush to emigrate themselves. The rats will leave the sinking ship in droves. And they won’t be bound for the EU, that’s fer sure. Watch out Maldives and the likes of the Caribbean, the UK ‘fat cat’ immigrants are coming! Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents (Documentary) BBC 3 from 11:00pm to 12:00am Unsuspecting young people head for the holiday of a lifetime in Thailand, little knowing that their parents will be following them and watching their every move. Two very different groups of mates are on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand's original party destination. Alex lives with his mum, who does everything for him and believes that he is sensible with money, strict with his budget and not much of a drinker. Joining him on his Thai adventure are best mates Josh and Tom. Joss has only ever left the country once before and is lacking a little self-belief. Did you pile on the holiday pounds? With the holiday eating over, it’s time to face the music. We asked people: Did you pile on the pounds? And more importantly, how did they plan on shedding the extra weight?
DAVE AND JANE HARRIS, aged 68 and 66, live in Albox, Almeria, and are both retired. They answered: “No, we actually lost weight, even though we have been to a hotel in Benidorm on half-board for Christmas. We did a lot of walking to keep the weight down.” Lesley Jones, 63, who lives in Altea, Costa Blanca, said she had not put on any extra weight either over the Christmas season: “Doesn’t look like it, anyway!” she said, adding: “There is no secret; I am just one of those people who does not put on much weight. I am always on the go.” We spoke to someone else who looks like he’s LOST also always on the go, a WEIGHT: runner currently in Dave and training for a marathon. Jane Harris
STREET TALK When we asked Daniel Robertson if he’d put on weight, he answered: “Not really, I’ve actually tried to gain a bit!” The 25-year-old web analyst from Glasgow expects to lose even more weight by the time he finishes training for his race in May. Bernt Axelsen is another retiree, aged 70, who lives in Arboleas, Almeria, and who didn’t put on extra pounds. He said: “No, I haven’t put on any weight. My weight is pretty stable. There is no secret; I don’t smoke but I eat and drink what I like.” When we asked Adam Connelly, 40, a builder from Teulada, Costa Blanca, he said he’d put on some extra pounds around his waist from too much beer drinking. Rowan Haddad, 24, on holiday from London, answered: “Yes, I know I have! I do every year, and every year it’s my New Year’s resolution to lose it.” The petroleum engineer mentioned that training and going to the gym with her boyfriend are the ways in which she plans to lose it, and that she will be staying away from crash diets. Looks like the secret - that is, aside from a quick metabolism and a favourable genetic make-up - is to stay as active as possible, whether walking, running, training, or keeping fit in an active job. It is a full and interesting travelogue describing the 52 day, 950 kilometre walk Clodagh and I did from the Bay of Biscay to the Med. The walk turned into a real adventure as several unexpected happenings such as new snow-falls, accidents and forest fires caused to modify our route, at times with no published map but the advice of shepherds, ex-smugglers and a hermit. It was the sight of ancient eco vegetable plots in the small mountain villages that prompted us to take on more land and write ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ after a few years. The book is rather written more for those walking with a

local walking club and nonwalkers rather than experienced mountain climbers. When we did
the walk we had never carried heavy back packs before or walked for more than a week
and then staying in bed and breakfasts or hotels. We took no mobile phone or GPS so relied on the use of a compass to ensure that, most of the time, we headed east. A total of just
two phone calls each were made to tell our families that we were still alive.

House prices fell in Spain during 2013 THE average property price in Spanish provincial capitals decreased by 7.8 per cent in 2013, a biannual study conducted by Sociedad de Tasacion has revealed. The valuation company foresees this price adjustment continuing during 2014 in order to compensate for the low market demand. Thus, the average price for a square metre in these cities was of €2,039, which means a 90-square-metre house would cost around €183,500. In the rest of the cities studied (with nearly 59,000 properties analysed), the average price per square metre was €1,583, a decrease of 6.4 per cent in relation to 2012. The report focused on new homes. The region where prices decreased the most was Aragon, with an 11.6 per cent decrease, followed by Extremadura (10.2 per cent). Meanwhile, Asturias and Galicia are the regions where prices decreased

EVERY cloud has a silver lining, which is fortunately the case even with Spanish real estate. Spain’s foreign residents have helped boost the lacklustre Spanish real estate market by increasing their property investments from 2012 to 2013. Foreign residents carried out property transactions totalling €4.74 billion in the period between January to September 2013. According to the Ministry of Public Works, this figure is a 13 per cent increase over the same period in 2012 (€4.19 billion). These expenditures pertain to property sales in the private sector, not those funded by government investment or subsidies. According to real estate consultancy firm CBRE, corporate investors include both returning clients and those entering the market for the first time. And of course the usual crew of private citizens, especially from the UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium and Russia, have contributed to the 13

It is followed by Chamberi, where the cost per square metre is at an average of €4,217.
Spanish costas still top of buyers’ lists
THE Spanish costas remain the favourite places for foreign buyers to look for a house, according to a report by property portal Kyero. The study, which analysed more than 200,000 enquiries made by email through the site in the second half of 2013, also pointed out that bargain properties are the most looked for by foreign investors. Updated twice a year, the enquiry report provides a province-byprovince analysis of the most interesting properties for foreign buyers in Spain. Alicante is the most attractive province for foreign buyers, with 31 per cent of all enquiries generated asking about the Costa Blanca.
Another well-known resort, Malaga’s Costa del Sol, accounted for almost 14 per cent of enquiries. It was followed by Valencia and Murcia with 6 and 5 per cent respectively. Mallorca and Almeria drew the attention of 4.6 per cent of foreign buyers each. As for type of property, apartments were the most popular ones with 41 per cent of enquiries, followed by villas (28 per cent) and country houses (15 per cent). Three-bed properties were the most enquired about (34 per cent), followed by two-bed properties (30 per cent). The most attractive price band to foreign buyers is between €50,000-€150,000, 47 per cent of all enquiries.

ACCORDING to the Study of Burglaries in Spain carried out by Línea Directa’s Home Insurance Division, which analysed the official data on burglaries in Spanish homes in the last six years and the opinion of 1,500 home-owners throughout Spain, the number of burglaries has increased as a result of the crisis. In spite of this, the
insurer’s sources show that ‘only 43 per cent of houses are insured.’ Burglaries are a concern for many people. In fact, over 90 per cent of the home-owners taking part in the survey thought the law needed to be strengthened in order to prevent this type of crime, for which the punishment is a prison sentence of up to five years. Furthermore, almost 40 per cent of victims consider that reporting burglaries to the police has little or
no effect, and almost 45 per cent believe the work carried out by the State Security Forces in their investigations has been a failure. In fact, according to the Ministry of the Interior’s own data, although the number of people arrested for burglary has increased by 123 per cent since 2007, only 11 per cent of cases recorded last year were solved. The most common type of burglary is committed in family homes (such as detached houses) at the weekend and in broad daylight. The most common methods used are: breaking in through windows (40 per cent), removing locks (19.2 per cent) or the so-called ‘slide method’ (14 per cent), which involves
opening the door with an X-ray or credit card. The cost is considerable: the average cost of homes burgled last year reached €732, a figure which is particularly significant in times of crisis. As for the objects which are stolen, money (64 per cent), jewellery (57 per cent) and electronic devices (54 per cent) are the ones most sought after by burglars. Most burglaries in Levante, fewest inland With the aim of analysing the real scope of burglaries in homes in Spain, Línea Directa has compared the Ministry of the Interior’s data from its official crime figures with the total number of homes in our country, which currently stands at around 26 million. This analysis reveals that
homes in the Community of Valencia, Baleares and Murcia are burgled the most, while those in Asturias, Extremadura and Castile and León are where the number of burglaries recorded is the lowest. According to Francisco Valencia, Director of Corporate Governance in Línea Directa: “Analysing the data from the report, it is remarkable that around 11 million Spanish homes are still uninsured and another four million do not have any type of security measure installed. “As a result, it is very important to increase safety measures and include theft cover when taking out home insurance, especially taking into account that the home is still the main investment for Spanish people.”

More than 6,400 people a year are admitted to hospital in the UK for micro-surgery to life-changing injuries caused by dogs. One in six of these victims is under 10. RENCH manufacturer Citroën is to launch a new model of the DS range exclusively for the Chinese market, the DS 5LS. The luxury saloon, produced at the Shenzhen plant in China, is a further step in the development of the DS brand in that country.

It is also the second DS model to be manufactured in the Asian country after the DS5. The DS 5LS introduces the DS’s new front end, inspired by the Numero 9 and Wild Rubis concept cars from Citroën. It features a prestige, sculpted grille called ‘DS Wings,’ a nod to the DS of 1955 that takes its name from the two chrome wings connecting the headlights. JAPANESE manufacturer Lexus has already put on sale the new CT 200h, to be launched throughout Europe during the first quarter of 2014. At a starting price of €23,900, the new compact luxury hatchback offers more sophisticated exterior styling, a more refined interior and enhanced driving comfort. The front of the new CT 200h introduces a further evolution of the Lexus ‘spindle grille’ design. The centre has been pushed forwards to create a threedimensional form. The bottom corners are spaced wider and the spindle ‘pinch point’ has been lowered, reinforcing the CT 200h’s low front profile and wide track. In profile, the new CT 200h may be identified by a choice of newly developed, 10-spoke, 16” and 17” alloy wheels, and a new shark fin-style roof antenna. To the rear, a new bumper design features a more horizontal structure. The new CT 200h is available in a choice of 11 body colours including a new red. All paintwork has a scratch-

Spain’s bestselling cars made at home MOST of the bestselling cars of 2013 in Spain are manufactured in plants located within the country. This is according to the Spanish Car and Lorry Manufacturers Association (Anfac), which revealed that six out of the 10 most sold cars last year were made in Spain. The bestselling model in Spain during 2013 was the Citroen C4 with 23,837 units sold. The multi-purpose versions of this vehicle, the C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso are manufactured at the PSA Peugeot Citroen plant in Vigo. This car is available as a five or as a seven-seater. The second bestselling model last year is also made in Spain. With 23,310 units sold, the Renault Megane is made at the French manufacturer’s plant in Palencia. Manufactured in Martorell (Barcelona) are the Seat Ibiza and the Seat Leon. The Ibiza was the third bestselling car of 2013 in Spain with 23,141 units, while the Leon held the ninth position with 19,423 units. The Volkswagen Polo, made at the

AFAEL NADAL was voted the greatest Spanish sports person of all-time. The winner of 13 Grand Slam titles and the current number one in the ATP world rankings, he received the award at the Gala for the 75th anniversary of the Spanish sports paper Diario Marca.

Chosen by readers of the aforementioned newspaper, ‘Rafa’ finished a clear first, ahead of fivetime Tour de France winner, Miguel Indurain with Pau Gasol, without doubt, the greatest Spanish basketball player of all time, third. This is some achievement for ‘Rafa,’ considering how many other famous Spaniards have graced the sporting world over the last 60 years, men like fellow tennis Open champions Manuel Orantes and Manuel Santana, top golfers Severiano (Seve) Ballasteros, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Sergio Garcia and José Maria Olazábal, Formula 1 stars Fernando Alonso and Pedro de la Rosa, rally driver Carlos Sainz, former captain of the Spanish women’s national team Amaya Valdemoro, road cyclist Alberto Contador, Spain’s national football team coach, Vicente del Bosque, Real Madrid players Iker Casillas, Ricardo Zamora, Antoni Ramallets, Francisco Gento, Alfredo Di Stefano (a naturalised Spaniard), Sergio Ramos, Fernando Hierro and Raul Gonzales, the Barcelona midfield trio of Xabi Alonso, Xavi and Andreas Iniesta, plus Fernando Torres, David Silva, Telmo Zarra and Emilio Butragueño. ‘Rafa’ enjoyed a fantastic 2013 season, coming back from a career threatening knee injury to win both the French and US Opens as well as claiming his 25th and 26th ATP Masters 1000 titles in Montreal and Cincinnati. And ending the year as the world’s number one male tennis player, again! He had already claimed the French Grand Slam title seven times, in 2005-06-07-08 and 2010-11-12; lifted the US Open prize in 2010, won in Australia in 2009, was twice ‘king’ at Wimbledon, winning in 2008 (against Roger Federer) and 2010 (beating Tomäs Berdych, IN and gained a tennis gold D RA LEV medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
My records show that to date ‘Rafa’ has played in 658 matches during his professional tennis career. He has won 60 titles overall, and no doubt whatsoever there are still a few more to be collected by the imperious Spaniard. Born on 3 June 1986 in Mallorca, ‘Rafa’ is now considered by many as one of the greatest male tennis players of all time, and that is quite an accolade, especially knowing how many super stars have graced the courts all round the world since the 1950s, namely Roger Federer, Björn Borg, Boris Becker, Rod Laver, ‘Pistol’ Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, André Agassi, Ivan Lendl, Ilie Nastase, Stefan Edberg,
Ranked among top five male tennis players for last 12 years Roy Emerson and John Newcombe. ‘Rafa’s success on clay has earned him the nickname ‘King of Clay’ and now many sports journalists and commentators all over the globe, as well as several former and current players, regard him as the greatest clay court player in the history of tennis. Also a decisive and key member of Spain’s winning Davis Cup teams of 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011, four years ago ‘Rafa’ became the seventh player in tennis history and youngest of four in the Open Era, to achieve the Career Grand Slam. And he is only the second male - the other is Agassi - to complete the Career Golden Slam. Indeed, he and the Swede Mats Wilander, are the only male tennis players to have won at least two Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces - hard court, grass and clay. And by winning last year’s French Open at Roland Garros,
‘Rafa’ became the first and only man to win the same Grand Slam tournament eight times. He also became the first to win at least one Grand Slam title nine years in succession, breaking the record of eight previously shared by Borg, Sampras and Federer. The much-liked and appreciated Spaniard also holds the record for most consecutive titles at one particular tournament - eighth in a row in the Monte Carlo Masters. And he’s the first player from Spain, male or female, to rank No. 1 in the world for more than 100 weeks. Ranked among the world’s top five male tennis stars for the last 12 years, ‘Rafa’ was the first Spaniard to win the Australian Open, the first to claim seven French Open titles (four on the bounce) and the last to win Wimbledon, beating Federer in 2010, the epic final the longest-ever at that venue. Rafa told me: “Always I sincerely believe that I can play better every time I go on court. But I am exceptionally happy with what I have achieved so far. I know I have been injured quite a lot, but with the right advice and treatment, I can always overcome such difficulties. “In 2010, I came back as strong as ever to win at Wimbledon for a second time and I also gained my first victory in America. Great times.” Starting 2011 as the world’s number one male tennis player, ‘Rafa’ eventually lost the top spot, as well as his Wimbledon crown to Serbian Novak Djokovic. But then, over the next two years, he won his sixth and seventh French Open titles, lost in the 2012 Wimbledon semi-finals to Czech star Lukas Rosol before winning his eighth French Open title against fellow countryman David Ferrer.
