Fight to save cats ANIMAL Charity PAWS has thrown its weight behind the effort to stop the mass round-up and slaughter of feral cats in Almeria City. The city hall has already begun rounding up animals and is reportedly separating kittens from
their mothers. PAWS was contacted by a lady called Irene from Activismo Por Los Animales, who has been caring for a colony of cats, and Mila Gutierrez of Animalia Terrae in Aguilas, who has set up a petition on Change.org.
The petition has already attracted more than 2,000 signatures and the number is climbing every day. Supporters are being asked to send letters to Carlos Sanchez, Almeria’s Councillor for Health, and Mayor Luis Rodriguez-Comendador, calling for a halt to the slaughter and introduce a more humane programme of neutering the animals. Primark set for its Roquetas launch THE new Primark store in Roquetas de Mar will open its doors next Thursday. The 133 workers taken on by the store will join the team of more than 6,000 people who make up the staff of Primark in Spain. The low cost clothing and accessories retailer continues to grow in Andalucia with the opening of its first store in Almeria Province. Primark will be situated in the Gran Plaza shopping centre in Roquetas de

MORE than 600 people on bicycles, roller skates and scooters took part in the second Almeria ‘march on wheels.’ The event was organised by the Department of Social Affairs of the City of Almeria, to celebrate ‘world no alcohol day.’ The city’s mayor, Luis Rogelio Rodriguez Comendador, was
charged with the reading of the manifesto of the no alcohol day, which highlighted the importance of the prevention of drinking from an early age. “Activities like today are fundamental in educating people and getting them to reflect on the risks associated with alcohol consumption,” he said. Bicycles, skates, scooters and
even pushchairs were used by more than 600 Almerienses taking a tour that ran between the Plaza de Las Velas up to the junction with Calle Murcia, where they continued down the Rambla returning to Plaza de las Velas again. After the tour, which lasted five laps, all participants were able to try out different alcohol-free drinks.

OVEMBER 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The day aims to raise awareness of the fact that women are subject to rape, domestic abuse and other forms of violence. The date is based on the 1960 assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic which was ordered by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. In December 1999, the date received its official United Nations (UN) resolution. Events are held throughout many parts of the world on this day, including Spain, to express rejection of violence against women. In the past decade, more than 700 women have died in Spain at the hands of their partners or former partners, and according to the government, 600,000 women every year are the victims of domestic violence, although there are only 140,000 complaints on average every year against the abusers. There is not a unique profile for victims of gender violence. Amongst the 700 who have died, there were foreign women who had no family or friends in Spain, disabled women, and women with no studies, but there were also those with university degrees, members of political parties,

Town hall keen to reopen HuercalOvera indoor pool HUERCAL-OVERA Town Hall is planning to reopen its indoor swimming pool. The council claims that operating company Tecnicas Ruedas is in breach of contract. This is a decision made after “a difficult time, such as the closing of a facility that is used by our citizens,” explained town hall spokesman, Antonio Lazaro. “We work hard to ensure these services are available to our citizens,” he added. The decision to terminate the contract with Tecnicas Reunidas comes after the closure of the indoor pool by the company, “which has abandoned the pool and unilaterally waived the contract signed at the time,” said the town hall. Lazaro added: “Because they no longer provide the service we have to be fair and do what our people deserve. We cannot let the company off the hook. We are asking for the contractual guarantee of €294,000, we intend to fight for the interests of our people.” The main objective is to restore the service. A sports council feasibility plan has already been made for this facility. The mayor, Domingo Fernandez, intends to reopen the pool. “We will work together to restore the service. If in the future it is feasible we will think of offering a concession, however for now we are focused on getting the pool operating.”

313 evictions are avoided in a year MORE than 300 evictions have been prevented in Almeria Province by the Regional Government (Junta de Andalucia). The Regional Government’s Department of Public Works and Housing said that it prevented 313 evictions in just one year. The Andalucian Programme in Defence of Housing has fulfilled its primary purpose, that people who come to us to prevent eviction stay in their homes, stressed the territorial delegate Encarna Caparros. She said these results show that, “when the regional government takes the side of the victims of the crisis, it is possible to make effective policies in their favour.”

Andorra celebrates 20 years twinning ENCAMP in Andorra welcomed representatives from Mojacar and two other of its twin towns to the tiny principality. Encamp is the gateway to the ski slopes of Grandvalira, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees. Europe’s fastest and longest cable car Funicamp, has turned Encamp into a winter destination and a point of interest for naturerelated activities in the summer where people can practice hiking, fishing and climbing. Mojacar was represented by the Mayor Rosa Maria Cano, the Councillor for Tourism Emmanuel Aguero, and members of the Twinning Association with Encamp headed by Felipe Kirch Gomez. The group visited the Andorran parliament, located in the capital city, Andorra la Vella, where, together with the delegations of Rouillac (France) and Alghero (Italy), they were received by

Perfume filcherer A WOMAN, aged 35, has been arrested accused of attempting to steal perfume worth €700 from a shop in Almeria City. The incident occurred in the Avenue Pablo Iglesias shortly after the shop opened at 10am. The woman entered the shop and started browsing through the aisles, said police. Once the attention of the shop workers was elsewhere the woman allegedly loaded up a holdall with bottles of the most expensive perfume from one of the shelves. She then headed for the door and ran off when the alarm was set off. A shop customer alerted members of the staff to the apparent theft, who gave chase. The woman didn’t get far before a passer-by blocked her path, the police were called and they arrested her.

BANNED MAYOR: Still pulling the strings?
Who is the power behind the throne? THE banned former mayor of Cantoria, Pedro Llamas, has denied on the Cadena SER radio station that he continues to be the ‘mayor in the shadows.’ Llamas expressed his discomfort with the situation that has arisen in the town. “It is absolutely false. I’m respectful of justice and will
fulfill my sentence.” The Guardia Civil has begun an investigation to determine whether Llamas continues to work ‘de facto’ as mayor despite being disqualified from public office for 23 months over new home licensing offences. The move came after the left wing PSOE group urged the
Attorney General to tackle what they consider a ‘mockery’ of justice by Llamas. They recently denounced the former mayor for apparently visiting the town hall every day, where allegedly he gave out orders to the council and organised the workers’ daily schedule.
THE Guardia Civil in Velez Blanco have arrested a 37year-old man from Sant Joan Despi (Barcelona). He was arrested on suspicion of a crime against public health when 400 kilos of hashish were found in the boot and rear seats of his vehicle. The agents were carrying out regular spot checks on the A92 in the direction of Murcia, in the municipality of Velez Blanco when the man, who was driving an Audi Q5 and travelling alone, was stopped. The driver showed signs of nervousness after stopping at the control point which led to to the agents carrying out a search of the car. As a result of the search, the agents located in the boot seven bundles of hashish and six bundles in the rear seats of the car, where upon the man was arrested for a crime against public health.

The scheme was set up by the Platform of Social Organisations of Andalucia to protest at local administration reform plans proposed by the conservative PP government. Some Albanchez residents responded to the request and demonstrated at the doors of the town hall in Plaza España. The mayor of Albanchez, Francisco Martinez, read out a manifesto against local council reform. The mayor expressed his “regret and fear of this reform” and recognised "there has never been a similar situation in local politics in my 26 years as mayor.

Ryanair hoping to recover the Madrid flight from Almeria AIRLINE Ryanair may reinstate the Almeria-Madrid route it dumped a year ago if airport operator AENA lowers prices. Since the abolition of the Ryanair flight to Madrid, the only available flight is operated by Air Nostrum of Valencia, with rates reaching almost €700 for a round trip much to the discontent of local business people. The situation has prompted many passengers to travel to Alicante and Granada to catch flights at more competitive prices. According to Luis FernándezMellado, the director for Marketing and Sales in Spain for Ryanair, AENA increased airport costs by 20 per cent in 2012 and 9 per cent in 2013, with a forecast increase of 1 per cent in 2014; making it impossible to maintain a route such as Almeria to Madrid where there is not a great volume of passengers.
He added that despite this, “we managed to create demand and attract tourists from Madrid to the coast and the interior of Almeria, now the tourist board tells us that this source has dried up.” Fernandez also said that the airline had maintained correspondence with the local government of Almeria to reach an agreement on promotion, “but this institution, of course, has no jurisdiction over the airport.” Almeria airport reached 1 million passengers in 2005 and 2006, although, with the arrival of the recession, figures have fallen dramatically. Fernandez went on to say that he doesn’t understand why AENA does not apply a more coherent price rate to airlines. “You cannot charge the same price in January as you do in August,” he said.

NEWS Guardia Civil sentenced for fiddling fines TWO members of the Guardia Civil traffic unit in Navarra have been sentenced to two years in prison for cancelling fines for footballers and businessmen. FACE treasurer takes retirement FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everybody) has announced the retirement of its hard-working and much appreciated treasurer Sheila Dye. Sheila has been involved in fundraising in the area for over 12 years, firstly for MacMillan Nurses, and then she became a founder member of FACE and was the treasurer from its inception. Over the years Sheila has been instrumental in helping to raise money for regional and national charities MACS (Mojacar Area Cancer Support), AECC (Asociacion Española Contra El Cancer) and ALCER, an association assisting people with renal problems. On a more local basis, assistance has also been provided to the main school in Arboleas, the small school in El Prado and to the Grupo Scout 106 Del Saliente in Albox. Sheila feels it is now time to retire and FACE would like to thank her for all her dedication throughout her term of service.

APARTMENT-OWNERS on Benidorm’s Poniente beach can breathe again. Their properties are not at risk and there will be no demolitions, said the Environment ministry in Madrid. The obligatory area that must be left free between the high tide mark and dwellings can be reduced by to up to 15 metres in some instances, the ministry’s Costas department announced. This strip will end at the town’s seafront ‘paseos’ or, in the case of the Poniente Beach, the wooden boardwalk built three years ago. The new ruling will apply to the section between Punta Escalera and the boundary with Finestrat. Overall, the new boundaries are much less restrictive than at present, agreed Vicente Juan Ivorra, councillor for Urban Development and the Environment at Benidorm Town Hall. Many properties on the Poniente beach that would otherwise have been situated inside the protection zone will benefit from the ministry’s decision, Ivorra said. The Environment ministry reckons to spend a year measuring the limits from the high-water mark. All seafront and coastal construction will be halted during this time.

cutting measures have entailed a 15 per cent reduction in Iberian’s routes in a move to return the airline to profits. Although Ryanair lost 4 per cent of its passengers in October, it still remained in the top spot with almost 3.2 million passengers. The low-cost Irish airline has lost passengers throughout the year, AENA said, owing to its decision to reduce routes owing to higher airport charges.

IT feels like I’ve just cleansed the cobwebs off my face from Halloween, but as I strolled through the streets this week despite the warm sun there was a real feel of Christmas in the air. Shop assistants were busy decorating windows and putting up fairy lights, while adverts are
strategically putting ideas in our heads of presents we should buy.
“Oh no, ho ho ho!” is about as much festive spirit as I could muster up. After paying for the mortgage, various loans, the electricity, flights back to home for Christmas as well as an array of other unforeseen costs, my Christmas piggy bank savings are at an all time low. Right now - at the most expensive time of the year - I’m broke!
What if community has no legal existence? Q. We live in a community of 12 houses. In 1997 our community was registered by the original builder in a very simple way, providing for the maintenance of the common elements. This registration was handwritten, with an official book of the minutes of the meetings. This book was never used and has been lost. Statutes were never made and community rules now are limited to the use of the pool. Up to now we never had any problem. However, you do have statutes. If a Community of Property Owners does not make any special statutes, they are by law governed by the terms of the Law of Horizontal Property. Second, it is possible that your builder registered the community at your nearest Property Registry. Communities are registered in a special section here because they own property. Your pool, for example, is owned by the community. So, you may be registered without knowing it. In addition, Spanish courts have in many cases accepted the legal existence of such informal communities because of their continued functioning. Your best course of action is to instruct a lawyer experienced in Community
affairs to help form a legal Community with powers to compel payment of fees.

That’s the reality of the situation and considering the financial mess the world is in right now, you can be guaranteed that many family members are feeling the same pinch. So go ahead - set down some ground rules to make Christmas more affordable this year. Try presents just for the kids, or a Secret Santa type of idea where 50 quid is spent on one nice present for one member of the family. As long as there are mince pies and a log fire a ‘Cheap Christmas’ sounds just perfect.

Eating habits are changing SPAIN’S ready-meals segment is expected to grow by 3.4 per cent a year in value terms between 2012 and 2017, making it the third-fastest growing category among food sectors. The forecast was made in a new report issued by UKbased consumer market research company Canadean. The expected rise has been attributed to a change in the eating habits of Spanish consumers, who are shifting to prepared meals instead of eating out. The report also noted that Spain has been reeling under the impact of challenging economic conditions, with uncertainties surrounding the euro having further affected consumer spending.

Spain’s clean exit from bank bailout
FINANCE ministers from Eurozone countries have given their vote of confidence to Spain after it elected to make a ‘clean break’ from a bank bailout programme. Jeroen Dijsselbloem, President of the EU’s Eurogroup, welcomed Spain’s decision to exit the aid programme in January 2014. Spain will be joining Ireland in making a clean break. Spain dipped into the bailout fund to the tune of €41bn in 2012 to recapitalise banks after the property market crashed. Speaking after a meeting of the group of finance ministers Mr Dijsselbloem said: “Both countries have always shown strong commitment towards the implementation of their programmes. “This has shown results, as the recent developments on the financial markets have shown. The Irish and Spanish people have gone through a difficult period, but I am now confident that their efforts will pay off in the coming years. Now these economies are back on the road to recovery. “We fully support Spain’s decision to exit the programme. Spanish banks are now stronger, more resilient and supervision and regulation have been tightened.
SPANISH drinks producer Torres has announced plans to release a new cava in 2015 as it looks to launch a range of wines in the next five years, reports the UK’s Drinks Business Review. The company’s move is aimed at producing a niche, premium cava with initial output of less than 5,000 cases per year. Torres said the new wine, a blend of international and local grape varieties, will be targeted towards the Chinese market.
Dia success THE Iberian peninsula has been one of the worst affected eurozone markets, with headline retail sales dropping month after month. But there has been one genuine success story over the past two years - Dia, a hard discounter that became an independent company in 2011 after being spun off by Carrefour.

Reputation as probably the worst company in Spain! TELEFONICA/MOVISTAR must surely be living up to their reputation as probably the worst company in Spain - yes worse than power company Sevillana/Endesa! Their incompetence and that of their operators is world breakingly above others. The new automatic answering system has taken a turn for the worse, if that was possible. If you don’t press the right button or say the right word it just cuts out on you. If you are lucky you may eventually get to speak to an equally confusing non electric person! I reported a fault on my business phone number. We could not receive or make calls, yet if someone phoned in they could hear the phone ringing. The fault was reported but nothing was done, so I called again. This time what appeared to be an intelligent person took details of my fault - again. When I asked if they could divert incoming calls to my mobile she gave me a code - to put in to my failed phone. I did explain that as the phone was not working it would seem to be a pointless and useless exercise. Could you not do it from the central exchange I asked? No. Why not? Because I am unable to. Can I speak to your superior? No. I had the same argument the following morning having had no contact from the technical department. Later the same day I phoned yet again - this time a very helpful lady arranged the divert in three minutes. No wonder they keep all their operators in Chile or South America. Nationwide licences. If licences were to be introduced here the revenue from them would more than pay for the employment of dog wardens and possibly pay for dogs homes rather than be dependent on charity. Maybe the rest of us would not have to suffer the incessant barking of so many dogs. If owners can not afford a licence, how can they afford the expensive food these animals must have? Silly rules RE the story about communities of residents in Mijas (Costa del Sol, Issue 1480) wanting to raise a petition against the enforcement of swimming pool
legislation on older properties. The communities do have a point. These regulations at times lack common sense. On my community the shallow toddlers’ paddling pool was filled in as it was ‘too near’ the main swimming pool. As a result there is nowhere for the toddlers to splash around in except the main pool, which is of course much deeper, and as a result much more dangerous. So the ‘safety’ regulations have resulted in an increased danger for young children. The law of unintended consequences in operation, with no common sense applied. No right... IT certainly seems that the issue over green waste has taken on a degree of momentum. It is positive that CLARO has taken up the issue supported by the Popular Party. The responses of the mayor to the legitimate concerns of Orihuela Costa residents who are forced to live in a dirty, poorly maintained area were insulting to every person living on the coast. There are no recycling services provided on the coast. There is no site where green waste can be deposited by the residents of the coast. To blame the inhabitants for a blatant lack of a garden waste disposal system by a councillor from the Green Party is beyond believe. The reaction of the councillors sitting 30 kilometres away in Orihuela to the disgusting state of Orihuela Costa just proves that these people have no right to have any control over the coast. The sooner Orihuela Costa gains its rightful independence the better! Liz Page (by email)
Lunch date In reply to the letter (EWN Issue 1480 ), sorry Olivia Qualtrough, but in reality you are the person who is ‘naive and ignorant.’ I have been a practising naturist for more than 20 years and I have never, ever, sat naked on any restaurant seat nor have I ever seen any other naturist do so. The etiquette is to always to take a towel and use it. The same goes for beach beds, sauna seats, etc. In fact, just so you can be more informed in future, I invite you to join me for lunch at a chiringuito (beach bar) on the naturist beach here at Vera Playa. T seldom occurs to career politicians that figures who convince inside the party do not necessarily cut it with the public. Neither do they grasp that elections are easier to win if party favourites are family favourites. Even committed PSOE supporters and those owing him their jobs agree that Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba should not lead the party into the 2015 general elections. The man who took the PSOE to two crushing defeats in 2011 is therefore unlikely to put himself through the coconut-shy of primaries despite a rapturous reception at the PSOE’s recent Political Conference. Brave new policies and a brave new PSOE were euphorically applauded, encouraging Rubalcaba and party grandees to delay naming the evil day, a.k.a. the primaries, as long as possible. They are talking about summer 2014 or even autumn, waiting to evaluate the party’s showing in next May’s European elections. If the party wants to see itself in phoenix-mode it needs primaries as soon as possible. Rubalcaba

BIT of a ‘told you so’ blurb this week. Normally I hate trumpet blowers, but I’m not averse to a little input on occasions. Firstly, some years ago, during the vilification of Prince Charles over his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, I predicted one day their affair could turn out to be one of the great Royal love affairs in British history. I think the couple, who are obviously deeply in love, have come through the whole saga with dignity and a new, thoroughly deserved respect. Camilla is far more suited to him than Diana, who, with all due respect, was nothing more than a somewhat flaky, manipulative star-struck clothes horse; one who Charles was bundled into marrying merely to produce an heir to the throne. Camilla not only ‘looks right’ at his side, but with her somewhat zany views and slightly off the wall projects, totally fits in with Charles ‘talking to
plants’ and environmental attitudes. I wish them both all the very best and a large dose of happiness in their life journey together. The second ‘trumpet call’ hits a somewhat sourer note. I’ve actually lost count of the times over the past 15 years or so I’ve taken a leaf from Enoch Powell’s book and predicted this whole immigration fiasco would finally lead to rioting and bloodshed on the streets. The latest statement from David Blunkett does, I think, finally exonerate me from all who accused me of
‘ranting’ and ‘scaremongering.’ Mr Blunkett’s comments, that the influx of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of Eastern Europeans, with their poor living standards and alien cultures, could lead to violence on the streets of Britain, is no doubt a welcome and sane observation, but too late. Even now there has been a deafening silence from most other leading politicians on the subject. It’s no good waiting for many British suburbs to resemble Syria or Beirut before they clamour to air their views on the nation’s media. In less than two months hoards of these people will pour into an already beleaguered Britain. They will have nowhere to live. No money and no jobs. Muslim allies IT is very wrong of ‘Leapy Lee’ to ridicule the Burka as a way of dress. Although I agree there are situations where it is totally inappropriate, this is the fault of incompetent politicians and there is no reason why it should cause offence in normal everyday multicultural life. He is additionally very wrong to comment as to why one does not see remembrance poppies worn on a Burka. Many of those Muslim women must carry, in their hearts, memories of their loved ones - the older ones their husbands and brothers, the younger ones their grandfathers who died fighting in WW2, alongside British soldiers in the Western Desert, Burma and Italy. Period drama Downton Abbey returns for a fifth series to ITV Richard Shanley

OWNTON ABBEY has been officially renewed for a fifth series by ITV. Carnival Films has confirmed that the period drama will return for a fifth run, following the fourth series finale earlier this month. Julian Fellowes will return once again as head writer, along with executive producers Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge. Neame said in a statement: “Audiences have enjoyed their regular Sunday evening visits back to Downton once again this autumn and we are thrilled to produce a new series of the show next year.
DOWNTON ABBEY: Promises all the usual highs and lows. “We promise all the usual highs and lows, romance, drama and comedy played out by some of the most iconic characters on television.” An official broadcast date has yet to be confirmed. The previous four seasons have aired each autumn. The series will first return for a two-hour
Christmas special in the UK on Christmas Day, which will include guest stars Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti. Radio Times has launched its DiscoverTV app for iPad devices. The iOS 7-optimised software helps users discover new content across television,
radio, catch-up and ondemand services. DiscoverTV provides subscribers with 14-day customised TV and radio listings, and serves them with daily categorised recommendations. “This is the first app designed for the way viewers watch television now. This is a golden age for quality television. Viewers have never enjoyed so much choice. But we want to make it easier to find the good stuff,” said Radio Times editor Ben Preston. BT Sport has won exclusive rights to show all live UEFA Champions League and Europa League games. The three-year deal, costing around £299 million (€356 million) per year, will begin with the 2015/16 season. BT has also confirmed that it will show a selection of fixtures free of charge, even
to non-subscribers. Both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League finals will be free to air, and at least one of each participating British club’s European fixtures will be shown free of charge per season. holiday destination To enjoy the cold - Cave houses in Granada a wonderland AN earth-house is an architectural style characterised by the use of natural terrain to form walls. In Spain, they are known as ‘casascueva,’ or cave houses. One of their main benefits is their natural insulation, which cools them down in summer and keeps them warm in winter. One of the areas in Spain where there are most cave houses is Granada province. Those in Guadix and the BazaHuescar area are particularly famous and have become a huge tourist attraction since many of them have been refurbished as rural accommodation. If you like to enjoy the great outdoors even when the weather is cold, the Baza-Huescar area is an ideal place to plan your break. After a day out, you can go back to a cosy cave house, most of which have huge log-burning fires. A great place to stay La Atalaya Cave Houses is a tourism complex composed of several different cave houses of different sizes. Located in Huescar, and just a couple hours’ drive from Almeria, it is an ideal place to chill out. Gastronomy Some local dishes are ‘Ajo al Almirez,’ a garlic sauce used to accompany meats; ‘gachas,’ similar to porridge; ‘Lata al Horno,’ which is a dish with lamb and vegetables; the ‘Relleno’ stuffed pork sausage; pickled pigeon; and ‘borrachuelos,’ fritters made with wine and covered in sugar. What to see Huescar Huescar has interesting monuments including the St. Maria Collegiate Church. Built at the beginning of the 16th century, since 2009, the temple is affiliated with the Santa Maria La Maggiore Basilica in Rome, being the first in this diocese to obtain Pontifical grace. Also in Huescar are the Homage Tower, San Francisco Convent, the Rodriguez Penalva Park and stately homes decorated with coats of arms. The Sagra
San Clemente Reservoir The San Clemente Reservoir is located on the course of the Guardal River and the Sagra Mountain can be seen from different spots along the banks. It’s an ideal place for a family walk or a picnic. Fuencaliente Spring The Fuencaliente Spring is a thermal spring in Huescar which also has a recreational and sports complex, poplar groves, lawn areas, sports facilities, terraces and restaurant. The complex is built around a natural water source which has been made into a swimming pool.
Rodriguez Penalva Park The Rodriguez Penalva Park is one of the busiest and most visited areas of Huescar. It is a recreational area where we can relax and enjoy a nice walk. The children can run and play on the swings, and adults can enjoy a nice walk at any time of the year River Castril Walkway The path runs along the foot of the rock, following the course of the Castril River. It is an impressive wooden walkway which is perched on the walls of the gorge. Along the way, visitors will pass bridges, tunnels and viewpoints. At the end of the walk, there is a restaurant, ideal for getting our strength back. It is the perfect place to walk and enjoy impressive views of the gorge and surrounding area. We can access the walkway through the Arboleda Perdida Park. After entering the tunnels, we can see the changing water levels from the viewpoints. Orce Museum The Orce Prehistoric and Palaeontology Museum is located in the Segura Palace. The museum is divided in two halls where visitors can discover the Granada Plateau of more than 1.5 million years ago. The quality and quantity of the collections is excellent. Heart attack gene discovered

Good excuse to hit the town with friends BEING sociable could boost your brain power. That’s according to a study which shows that parts of the brain are bigger and better connected in people with
lots of friends. The finding comes from scientists at Oxford University (UK) who asked 18 men and women how many friends they had met, spoken to
on the phone or emailed in the past month. The average number of friends contacted was 20 and scans showed that around half a dozen brain regions were
bigger in those who were more sociable and had more friends. It is hoped that these findings could help scientists understand more about how the brain
reacts in social situations which could lead to new treatments for autism, schizophrenia and other conditions in which people struggle to interact with others.
A GENE which raises a person’s risk of having a heart attack has been discovered by German researchers. The German Heart Centre in Munich believes carriers of the gene are 15 per cent more likely to have a heart attack and say that more than half of the 30,000 people they studied had the gene. The genetic mutation results in the person having stickier blood platelets which make heart attacks more likely. The researchers are now working on a test for doctors to use to establish whether a person has the gene and they hope the findings will make treatment better for those at a higher risk.

WO bastions of British life were in the news recently. Both with their backs up against the wall in increasingly tough economic times. Will both survive and flourish? Let’s take a closer look.
First up, Ryanair. The airline’s been on a massive charm offensive of late, desperately trying to improve its badlytarnished image. It’s going to improve its website, slash charges for not printing boarding cards, even allow you to reserve seats. As CEO Michael O’Leary, who did the round of TV interviews, put it: “I want to be loved by my customers as much as I love them. Boy, are we listening and responding.” Good grief! It was as if, say, John Lewis were changing its slogan from “Never knowingly undersold” to “Always out to MICHAEL O’LEARY: Chairman and chief executive officer of Ryanair.
fleece you.” What an utter U-turn! Next, M&S. When the company announced its clothing sales were down by 1.3 per cent, it blamed everything from rival shops to the warm late summer. But it’s not the wrong sort of weather that’s undermining M&S but the wrong sort of clothes - and management. I have advice for M&S. Stop trying to be all things to all people. Cut your losses and just stick to chic good quality knitwear and underwear. No more elasticated trousers, peasant-style tent tops or frills, please! But it’s those Leibovitz advertising posters that shock me most: a bevy of super-successful women including Helen Mirren seemingly dragooned together at gun-point. The backdrop of the City, the world of the glass ceiling,
RYANAIR: Wants to improve its image. is meant to ‘showcase’ female success while they’re cooped up in a barge where nobody even wants to acknowledge the other. Some sisterhood! This lot look as if they’ve been corralled to the stern of a booze-free ‘booze cruise’ and are considering going for broke and swimming for it. Who authorised such misjudged advertising? Finally, Ryanair may
never be ‘lovable,’ but it’ll be no more annoying than its rivals. And M&S? This used to be known for good quality basics at affordable prices. Now it too often stands for overpriced dowdiness. It can bring in all the stars it likes but it still can’t beat its rivals for on-trend, well-priced clothing. It’s talking the talk all right, but the walk’s more
of a stagger on life support. Matron, pass the meds! Quick!

Order your pizza by just the press of a button AMERICAN tech company iStrategyLabs is developing the ultimate food appliance: an emergency pizza button. PiePal can memorise up to five different pizza combinations that can be ordered with just one push. For the time being, it can only place orders to Domino’s Pizza. This is so because the website of the international pizza chain
reportedly offers the best ordering structure available. As it’s still in development, PiePal is not ready yet to be launched on the market. People at iStrategyLabs are currently working on adding protection to avoid pizzas from being ordered by accident. The company offers anyone to become a beta ‘taster’ of the
device by signing up on their website. Unfortunately, this tasty possibility is only available for people living in the US.

Coffee all the way from tree to cup A NEW way of consuming coffee has emerged on the market allowing users to have complete control over the brewing process of the favoured hot drink from start to end. Bonaverde Coffee Changers has developed a coffee machine that not only grinds and brews, but also roasts beans on the spot. The company just
launched a Kickstarter campaign, with the hope of taking its prototype machines to mass production. More than simply giving consumers the tools to roast their own beans, Bonaverde is also putting
consumers in direct contact with a network of farmers from around the world to choose exactly where their
beans come from. Customers can chat or Skype with farmers as they pick out their raw green coffee beans, which will then be delivered to them in individual cloth bags. The first machines are set to launch in October 2014.

A shortage of nuts ALMOND shortages in America and across Europe are affecting chocoholics as some retailers report a shortage of almond chocolate bars. Retailers say they have seen the demand for Green & Black’s Organic Chocolate and Almond bar outstrip supply in recent weeks. UK supermarket chain Waitrose has already sold out. California grows around 80 per cent of the world’s almonds and the harvest has suffered this year due to a prolonged drought. Spanish and Italian crops which have seen demand rise to make up the shortfall are also expected to run out before the end of the season.

Chocolate chip cookies, a delicious accident that is now a world snack CHOCOLATE chip cookies are a delicious and world known snack, but not everyone knows they were originally a culinary accident. American Ruth Graves Wakefield is said to have accidentally made the first-ever chocolate chip cookies in her restaurant, The Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. In the 1930s, after running out of baker’s chocolate while making chocolate cookies, Wakefield decided to use pieces from a Nestle chocolate bar. But instead of melting, the chocolate maintained its shape, giving birth to the popular biscuit. Wakefield published the recipe in her cookbook Toll House Tried and True Recipes, and it rapidly became a baking favourite.

Restaurant opened in China which is run by robots A RESTAURANT in China has replaced its waiters with robots that cook, serve and attend to customers. Robot Restaurant, in the city of Harbin, has a workforce of 20 robots that tirelessly work for five
hours. After that they need two hours to recharge their batteries. But they seem to be very efficient as they make noodles, fry or steam-dumplings and bring the food to the tables

HIS November 22 will be the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F Kennedy. I was 20 years old, and seven days earlier had boarded a transatlantic liner in Southampton. JFK had become an icon in Europe since his election in 1960 and had transformed the image of America. The President and his family were a sophisticated civilised, cultural elite who acted and spoke in a way Europeans could understand. They had become the Royal family of America and, like so many young people, I was enticed by the American dream.
On November 22, the ship was one day out from New York. Clocks and watches had already been set to Eastern time and everybody on board was thinking about the final night’s gala dinner. At about 1pm I was making my way up the main staircase for lunch when I noticed a large blackboard on which was scrawled ‘President Kennedy dead, RIP.’ Why would somebody write something so stupid, I remarked. On reaching the main promenade deck I noticed groups of people clustered around radio sets. It soon sunk in that the notice had not been written as a silly gesture, the president had indeed been shot and was in hospital. When the news came through that the president had died no passenger was able to hold back tears. The gala dinner was cancelled and a memorial service was held in its place. Early the following morning the ship entered New York harbour passing the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline, shrouded in mist, and into the Hudson river to dock at the city’s passenger port. After passing through immigration, far simpler than today, I set foot for the first time on American soil. A taxi took me to a small west-side hotel. After unpacking I ventured out into deserted streets. It was cold and overcast with newspapers blowing across the street in the icy wind. It reminded me of the final scene in the movie ‘On the Beach.’ With food and drinks purchased from corner stores, I spent three days glued to the old TV set in the hotel bedroom. Lyndon Johnson had immediately been sworn in as president on Airforce One and the police had apprehended the
supposed assassin. But events turned to incredulity when Jack Ruby shot Oswald dead as he was leaving the Dallas police station, live on TV. Then the funeral took place in Washington with the president’s family and world leaders in the cortege slowly following the horse drawn carriage on its way to Arlington cemetery. After travelling around the country, I worked in New York until June when I booked a passage on a transatlantic liner taking advantage of the summer weather and groups of American college students travelling to Europe. It was a perfect ending to a great adventure, which had begun so tragically. I had seen enough of America to understand why JFK was killed and was a fully, fledged conspiracy theorist long before Oliver Stone’s movie, JFK. While the West and East coast were more sophisticated, cosmopolitan centres, the rest of the country remained backward and insular. Gun ownership was an intrinsic part of society. I had witnessed run down city centres and a great deal of poverty across the country as well as racism and a strong North-South divide which still seemed to be a legacy of the Civil War, contrasting with pockets of immense wealth. When I learnt that three university students from New York had been murdered in Mississippi by opponents of
the civil rights movement at about the same time I was passing through the State with a New Jersey registered car, I thought how close I had come to danger. Four years later in 1968 I was living in Paris. It was a dramatic year: as well as the student revolution in Paris, the Tet offensive had started in Vietnam, Russian tanks rolled into Prague, Martin Luther King had been gunned down and Robert Kennedy was assassinated. He was perhaps a greater loss than his brother. Acclaimed by young and old, rich and poor, white and black, across the country, he was clearly on his way to the White House. Thousands lined the tracks on the final train journey to Washington carrying his coffin on an open carriage. A few years ago, after a visit to the Gettysburg battle site, I went to Arlington cemetery to see their burial place. There was another young president in the White House idolised by millions of people. But Barack Obama has not been able to fulfil his promises either and America is more divided than ever. The American Dream was an illusion. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, shot and killed on November 22, 1963.

You may be the only person in the world to ‘have it all.’ Before having children, I was convinced this would be me, which must have amused mother nature no end. As Oprah Winfrey says: “You can have it all, just not at the same time.” Being an expat mother makes getting even a remote semblance of having it all even more unlikely, without a support network of family to rely on and with fulfilling work opportunities limited. So, it was with some disappointment I saw the Hollywood version of an excellent book on the subject, ‘I don’t know how she does it?’ written by English journalist and writer, Alison Pearson. In the book, the working mother faces all the trials and tribulations this brings feeling inadequate both at home and at work, never able to give 100 per cent you are bound to fall short. The novel is funny, truthful and gritty, ending in the-less-than saintlike main character making a choice between work

Travelling alone is not as difficult as it sounds - there are many alternatives these days - from yoga retreats to educational tours of China or cooking trips to Italy. One friend who found herself in this situation retrained as a psychotherapist, having already practiced by counselling the children all those years. Or why not follow through on a business idea you’ve been considering? Now could be the time to set up that boutique, restaurant or take up day trading on the stock exchange from home. If you still can’t face that empty nest, take advice from that wise woman Dorothy Parker, who once suggested that, “The best way to keep children at home is to make the home atmosphere pleasant, and let the air out of the tyres.”

Grow your own herb garden The perennials such as lavender, rosemary, thyme, chives, bay, sage etc., are naturalised Spanish plants and are therefore fairly easily established. Many annual herbs such as basil, parsley and dill can be planted in spring. They are easy to care for in semi shaded positions. Herbs can be regularly trimmed for using in salads, cooked dishes and for healthy infusions. Planted along paths,
within mixed flower beds, on a rockery or in a dedicated herb garden their leaves and flowers add perfume to the garden, which in turn attract many species of butterflies. Herbs can be harvested for hanging in bunches or mixing into potpourris to provide natural aromatherapy effects. Co-planted on the vegetable plot they can be useful attractors of beneficial insects:
(rosemary and lavender), in attracting pests away from crops (sage, dill, fennel and coriander), the basis of natural insecticides (garlic) and fungicides (horsetail) and the basis of valuable natural fertilisers (comfrey, borage and nettle). Mayhem and torture arriving in Mojacar!
Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

T
HE trip should have taken two and a half hours at most. From Almeria’s airport to the centre of what today is called Mojacar’s south beach. But, it took us eight. I even broke the manly code of NOT asking directions - by pleading with everyone and anyone I could encounter, “where the hell is this place called Mo-Jaw-Ker?” It was 1969 and the airport was new. We were too. There weren’t any road signs, nor maps. I would ask along the way. If the truth were known, this intrepid explorer didn’t have the common sense of an inebriated goat. But, I whizzed on - an adventure that still encompasses a lifetime.
Using my common goat sense I boldly followed the next widest pathway when the asphalt disappeared. Then onto goat tracks and further very narrow donkey trails leading high into the mountains. These paths always led somewhere, usually someone’s cortijo-house that hadn’t ever
seen a car but were exhilarated by having new visitors. They then sent us down dry riverbeds and up precipitous trails always arriving at just another farmhouse.They were all the same: grungy, dilapidated, sparse and forlorn. The people always dressed in black with cakes of earth packed into the clothes’
fabric to allow the folk to stand upright. The men would rush to the car as if they had been expecting us and the ladies immediately began poking and grabbing our son Joby in the backseat. He of the flaxen blond hair. They gleefully made a spectacle of twisting his cheeks until he screamed. If he didn’t
squeal their mission had been a failure. There is something about witch-looking old women that just gotta do cruelty to kids that alerted my senses to our future prosperity in this barren land. “Mo-jaw-ker” I screamed and damn me, the reply was always the same, they pointed off to the north and said back to me “Mohock-car” with a strange, guttural, and unrecognisable clearing of the throat that reeked of something nasty and deep inside them. So, off I roared again down some lame dirt path to what seemed an endless morass of small farms with not even a chicken in sight. Worse than poor, I could only imagine they got their delights by terrorising young kids. “Just what kinda place are we going to” snarled the wife. “Beats the hell out of me” I had to reply, “but they sure don’t like our kid!”

THERE are now a number of schools being run by vets, which is an excellent idea for both puppy and owner, and many training clubs around. It can be daunting deciding what class to sign up for because many people with dogs of 12/18 months still refer to them as puppies. Often I get a phone call from someone saying “oh, he’s only a puppy of 18 months.” Many people calculate according to children’s age. Wrong. Dogs of around 12/18 months are already
working as police dogs and sniffer dogs, many others helping disabled people. So we have a lot to think about to go forward with a dog that is an adult. First the dog must learn to get on with other dogs and people. There is nothing worse than having a dog pulling you along and wanting to fight with other dogs. Keep in mind that over half the dogs born are disposed of by having them put to sleep or sent to a rescue centre before the age of two years due to behavioural problems. What a sad situation - if only they had gone to a training club. Speak to your vet who will know of a local trainer. Communication is the key word when training, so watch others at the club and after the lesson chat to them to see how they are getting along. It might take a few

The Bull in Albox aiming to help the Phillipines THE disastrous typhoon Haiyan that struck the Phillipines was close to home for waitress Ruby of the Bull Pub in Albox. Ruby was born in the Phillipines and only found out this week that a cousin’s relatives were safe and sound. Ruby said “the island where they live was completely flattened by the typhoon leaving no landmarks whatsoever.” Now Ruby has started to raise money for her fellow countrymen and has a useful ally in bar owner Kevin. The Bull has set a target of €300 and Kevin has promised to cut off his long hair and shave off his beard. Kevin said “I am not overly keen, I have had long hair for six or seven years so it will be strange. I will probably grow it long again after!” People have already pledged money on the Facebook page of the Bull and anyone who wants to donate and see a new look Kevin can call into the pub in the main square in Albox.

be sent to help the cause. At the moment €120 has been raised. The typhoon killed at least 3,974 people and a further 1,186 are missing, with about 500,000 people homeless, according to the latest official figures.

were four years ago. After discarding the unhealthy Gas ‘estufas,’ and going for ‘Heat Electric’ they tried various options - as customers - and realised one thing. Start by cancelling any regular deliveries, and arranging for the post office to hold onto your mail until you get back from holiday. Be discreet when you’re discussing your travel plans. Don’t mention details or dates where other people are likely to overhear the conversation. Don’t close the curtains in an attempt to make your home seem less tempting: if anything, it’s likely
to do the opposite. Instead, move any desirables (car keys, for instance) out of sight, and fit timer switches on lights and radios. It’s not rocket science but it will send out ‘at home’ signals to casual observers and help deter opportunists. Don’t leave a spare key in that crafty cache that only you know about - for reasons that should be pretty obvious! If you can, leave a key with a neighbour or
a friend, someone who can clear away tell-tale piles of junk mail and perhaps even park their car out front. Your neighbours may keep themselves to themselves, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t share your departure and return dates with them. Far from feeling you’re imposing, they’ll probably appreciate the chance to be helpful - and no one’s more likely to spot suspicious goings-on in your absence. With identity theft on the rise, it’s wise to leave important documents with friends, or in a bank safe if you have one. And, finally, why not take snapshots of any items of special value, preferably in their normal surroundings; it could be useful, if you are unlucky enough to fall victim to burglary. Audi A3 Cabriolet’s launch in spring 2014
GERMAN manufacturer Audi announced its all new A3 Cabriolet will become available in spring next year. The A3 Cabriolet takes the recently introduced A3 Saloon as its foundation, but at the same time it adopts an array of technological innovations from the larger Audi models. A soft but hard-wearing fabric roof, stretched over a kinematic mechanism made of magnesiumsteel, opens fully automatically in a little under 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h. When retracted at the touch of a button, the top - complete with
heated glass rear window - rests in a tray that barely affects luggage capacity, which amounts to 275 litres. An active rollover protection system consisting of two spring loaded plates that are recessed into the body protects occupants in case of a rollover accident. The petrol engine range powering the new A3 Cabriolet starts with the 140ps 1.4 TFSI linked to six-speed manual transmission. It reaches a speed of 100km/h in 9.1 seconds, with CO2 emissions of 114g/km. This is achieved by the Audi Cylinder-on-Demand (CoD)
technology, which deactivates two of the engine’s cylinders under part-load. The 1.8-litre TFSI engine goes from 0 to 100km/h in 7.8 seconds, with a top of speed of 240km/hour and 180ps peak output. Dual injection into the combustion chambers and induction manifold help to maintain a high level of efficiency. The manual transmission equipped 2.0 TDI with 150ps engine is also included in the range. It offers combined fuel consumption of 67.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 110g/km, going

60th anniversary of SEAT’s first-ever car SEAT recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of the 1400, the Spanish automotive manufacturer’s first ever car. In 1953, three years after the company was established, a high end car based on American car models of the day rolled off the assembly lines at Barcelona’s Zona Franca. Since the launch of the 1400, SEAT has built more than 16 million vehicles, including emblematic models like the 600 and the Ibiza.
The choice of the 1400 sedan as an initial model was a response to government officials needing a means of transport. Also, this model was a very suitable car for use as a taxi. In 1953, when the SEAT 1400 hit the roads, petrol rationing in Spain came to an end. At an ex-works price of 121,875 pesetas (the equivalent of €41,735 today), initial production was five cars a day, built by a workforce of 925 employees.
These figures would grow exponentially, and were the prelude to large-scale car ownership in Spain. In 1956 production grew to 7,000 vehicles, with practically 100 per cent of components being manufactured domestically. 10,000 units were built the following year, at the rate of 42 units per day. After two years, SEAT was employing 5,000 people. Production of the 1400 discontinued in 1964.

Winning ways for Philip at Alboran CORTIJO Grande Golf Club held its annual Green Jacket ‘away day’ at Alboran Golf Course. The competition took place over two days last week with Philip Dunne winning with 36 points and 35 points on the Tuesday and Wednesday competitions. In second place on Tuesday was Neil Halliday (33) with John Rice (32) third. In the Second Division, Cathal Higgins won (31), Barbara Wardley came second and Tony Stubbs was third. On Wednesday, Philip Dunne and Neil Halliday took first and second place while Julie Oliver achieved third. In the Second Division, Mary Higgins was winner (34), Barbara Wardley second (34) and Grace Ward ended up in the third place (30). The Ball Sweep winners were Neil Halliday and Frank Mcgovern that day. On Sunday, Philipe Dunne won the competition again (38) but this time only by countback on the 6th from Brian Hardwood (38). In the Second Division, first place went to Barbara Wardley (36) followed by Carol Hardy (31). Mike Picken received the Ball Sweep award.

The 19th Hole Golf Society THE 19th Hole Golf Society played its annual Three Club Challenge, plus a Putter, at the demanding Aguilon Course, a task that proved less daunting than with a normal bag full of clubs because the room for error in club selection was far less. Heavy rain half way through the round made the journey a bit more difficult, but the sun came out and everything dried out eventually.
Pete Dow hit another good run of form by taking third place and a Nearest the Pin on the 12th hole. Don Harbron (33) had his best round for some time securing 2nd place from an inspired Dave Denyer (33) on count back. Terry Caddick and Ian Postles took the other Nearest the Pins at holes eight and four respectively, and Mark Danson really showed his ability by scoring an incredible eagle on the long par five at the sixth hole.
