€72m theme park Contracts awarded for massive project WORK on the Paramount Park in Alhama de Murcia is expected to start next January, following the awarding of the construction contracts totalling €72 million. Premursa Theme Park SA, the company in charge of getting the Paramount Park up and running, announced that the winning bid, amounting to €52 million for the cost of constructing the first two phases of the park, was submitted by Ferrovial Agroman. The Madrid-based company beat 10 other bids and was involved in the construction of Terra Mitica in Benidorm.

Right-wing teen hacker arrested A TORREVIEJA teenager has been arrested for sending death threats to journalists. The right-wing 19year-old was detained by police within 48 hours after an investigation was launched into cyber attacks. During the last two weeks, various digital media have been subjected to constant attacks that have crippled their websites, affected their normal operations and resulted in the loss of an estimated €100,000. Agents from the Technological Research Unit of the National Police in Alicante were alerted to the hacker and arrested him at his home in Torrevieja, where they seized two laptops, hard drives, Nazi flags and fascist

Keeping schoolchildren safe A BUS safety campaign has been launched by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) across the Valencia Region. The Traffic Guardia Civil will conduct inspections on vehicles to check paperwork, technical and safety elements and seat belts as well as the length of time a driver

has been behind the wheel. School buses will also be checked to ensure they comply with all legal requirements. Of the nearly 17,000 buses made in Spain for the school transport service, only two in five have the correct seat belts installed, so special attention will be paid to this aspect, with the DGT stating

that nine out of 10 serious injuries suffered by children in school buses could have been avoided had they been wearing a seat belt. From 2013, all new trucks and buses must have an emergency braking system which activates automatically when it detects the possibility of collision.

HE 22nd edition of the Fiesta del Orujo will be held in Potes, Cantabria, from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday. This year, the ‘Orujero Mayor’, the patron of the festival, will be Cantabria-born actor Eduardo Noriega. Orujo is a strong liquor made in Northern Spain, obtained from the distillation of marc, the solid remains left after pressing the grapes. It is a transparent spirit with an alcohol content over 50 per cent (100 proof) and is also known as aguadente, or ‘firewater’. In Cantabria it is mainly made in the Liebana Valley where it has become an artisanal craft for some families who after making wine for themselves distil the pomace in a still. Young orujo is a colourless liquor, while aged orujo is amber. The aged variety is fermented and distilled the same way, but then poured into oak barrels to age for at least two years. Cantabria has been distilling orujo since the 14th century at least.

Employment consortium is owed €900,000 MUNICIPALITIES in the Vega Baja owe €900,000 to the consortium created to promote employment. President of the Consortium for the Economic Development of the Vega Baja, Alejandro Morant, said the economic viability of the entity is assured despite the debt. He said in recent months many municipalities have started to pay their debts, but some towns have not made payments for several years, with €30,000 owed by Callosa de Segura, and Bigastro also owing €30,000.

Illegal immigrant dies jumping fence A SUB-SAHARAN immigrant died attempting to jump over the fence from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa. He fell from a height of six metres onto the Moroccan side and was taken to a hospital in Nador, but

nothing could be done to save him. Four other people were injured. The events occurred when an avalanche of between 150 and 200 Sub-Saharans attempted to cross the fence in the Tres Forcas area. Approximately 100 reached Melilla

Fire crew rescues sleeping woman FIREFIGHTERS rescued a woman from her home as she slept, unaware that her property was on fire. Fire crews were called to the flat in the urbanisation Jardin Botanico, in Calle Orihuela, Torrevieja, after the caretaker spotted the fire on the fourth floor of one of the residential blocks. Suspecting the tenant was still inside the building, firefighters broke the glass of a window in the gallery to access the property. They found the woman sleeping, unaware of the danger. Investigations found the blaze to have been caused by a short circuit in some electrical equipment.

Council to pay compensation TOTANA Town Hall has been ordered to pay compensation to residents whose homes were flooded in the town. The Murcia Regional High Court has partially upheld the claim made by

Salmonella investigated EIGHT cases of salmonella are being investigated. Six of the victims have been treated at health centres across the Vega Baja, with two requiring hospital treatment. One sufferer who was admitted to hospital with dehydration, kidney damage and blurred vision, claims the poisoning came from a food stand at Elche’s Medieval Market, saying meat from the stall was the last thing he ate. Local Police have carried out hygienic and sanitary checks and licence reviews of the food handlers, with

the Public Health Department saying there was no conclusion as to whether the Medieval Market was the source of the bacteria. They say the incubation period has passed so no new cases are expected.

Burglary gang is dismantled ELCHE police have dismantled a criminal organisation believed to be responsible for 10 burglaries across Alicante and Murcia provinces. The police investigation has resulted in the arrests of four Romanians.

Passenger numbers down at San Javier SAN JAVIER airport’s winter season is now underway. Jet2.com, Ryanair, Air Nostrum and Jetairfly are all offering routes between now and the summer to UK airports as well as Dublin, Madrid and Brussels. Figures for passengers using San Javier airports are down this year, continuing the downward trend which first began in 2008. In September, 144,513 people used the airport, 2.3 per cent fewer than in the same month last year and 33 per cent fewer than in September 2007. August also saw a decline in the number of passengers with 167,412 people using the airport, down 4.2 per cent compared to 2012.

High speed train gets faster and faster THE AVE high speed train is to increase its speed from January. The section between Albacete and Madrid has already reached permitted speeds of 306 kph, with

the same speed expected on the Alicante to Albacete stretch in the New Year. It means the journey from Alicante to Madrid could be made in

just over two hours on the direct service. Since its inauguration in June, more than 600,000 passengers have used the AVE.

Hospital works on reducing ultrasound backlog ORIHUELA: Homes recognised as mini-urbanisations.

Twenty homes become legal TWENTY homes in El Mundamiento, Los Mazones, Orihuela have been legalised. The petition, made by two law firms on behalf of the residents, has been approved by the Valencian Government. Orihuela’s councillor for Town Planning, Antonio Zapata said as a result of the action a new office will soon be opening in Orihuela to deal with similar petitions. The approval has established the homes as miniurbanisations, with Zapata urging others in a similar situation to apply. However, there is a cost for homeowners who have to pay for essential services such as water and lighting, which could be around €8,000-€10,000 each-

Gender violence march TO commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Guardamar Town Hall has organised a solidarity march on

Sunday, November 24, at 11am through the town. At midday a manifesto against gender-based violence will be read out.

Only one-third of jobless get benefits MORE than 170,000 unemployed people in Alicante are not receiving any financial help. Only one in three jobless people in the province are receiving benefits, according to the latest Labour Force Survey (LFS) for the third quarter of 2013. By gender, there are 48,748 unemployed men receiving unemployment benefits, compared to 26,437 women. By age, the least protected group is the under 30s, with 8.8 per cent receiving aid.

Registration for the walk is free and is now open at the town hall. The first 500 people will be given a T-shirt with the slogan ‘Against gender violence; move and react’.

Rules for dogs SAN FULGENCIO Town Hall is reminding residents that it is compulsory to register a pet on the town hall registry and have it vaccinated. Pets on public highways must be on a lead or chain and potentially dangerous animals must be held by a leash no longer than two metres, and wear a muzzle. Fines of between €30-€300 will be given to owners who allow their pets to defecate in public areas. There are plastic bags for excrement collection available at the town hall.

Consumer offices work together WORKERS from Consumer Offices (OMIC) across the Vega Baja are meeting in Torrevieja tomorrow (Friday). The purpose of the meeting is to try and work together and raise issues affecting consumers to create protocols between them. They will discuss inspection issues, products whose sale is prohibited and alerts sent by the National Consumer Institute and the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Tourism and Employment.

Worries of power loss SOCIAL WORKERS across the Valencia Region warn that reforms could threaten the social services departments of 115 municipalities. The new changes planned to streamline local Government from January 2014, could mean that towns of less than 20,000 inhabitants will lose most services. The College of Social Work in Alicante warns that this new law does not guarantee the continuity of care and it removes powers of most social services with the potential loss of 2,500 jobs in the community. Maria Dolores Soler and Emiliano Ramirez from the College of Social Work said: “There is an undeniable contradiction between the austerity policies of the draft law and increasing demands of social emergency in the current crisis.”

AAC for AECC cancer charity THE Costa Blanca’s own Bono tribute performer Robert Bonovox formed Artists Against Cancer (AAC) having been inspired by Maria Wilson and her group of Pink Ladies. AAC is a group of performers supporting the AECC

cancer charity. The latest event at El Mundo’s in Benijofar, raised €1,138. Maria said: “I feel really humbled that so many fabulous local performers constantly donate their time free of charge to our fight against cancer.”

It was launched following an agreement between the Regional Ministry for Social Welfare and Valencia Region municipalities. To qualify people must be older than 65 or aged between 60 to 65 and in a situation of dependency, living with people older than 65. If you are older than 18 and in a situation of dependency, living with someone older than 65 who benefits already from this programme, you can also apply at the town hall. The total cost of the service per person per day is €6.81 but with subsidies from the government and Rojales Town Hall, the user will pay €2.32 per day.

Anti-car theft campaign FIFTY-FIVE people have been arrested in Spain as part of an international operation against illicit car trafficking in the European Union. More than 3,000 Guardia Civil officers participated in the operation by increasing road tax controls at ports and vehicle checkpoints on the Spanish road network. Their presence at borders was also increased in order to detect and recover stolen cars. They co-operated with the French Gendarmerie and the Portuguese

Mushroom kills man A MAN, 78, died in Olvega, Soria, after eating a poisonous mushroom. The fungus, probably a variety known as death cap, was picked by the victim more than a week before he died in the intensive care unit of a local hospital. The symptoms appeared six hours after he ate them, starting with vomiting and diarrhoea, and led to liver, kidney and multiple organ failure. Regional authorities have asked people to take care when picking and eating mushrooms.

Online exam cheat

A WOMAN, 26, has been arrested by National Police in Malaga for allegedly taking five exams in the name of another person. The enquiry began last December when a Malaga University student found it impossible to sit the exams she should have been able to take online. When she logged onto the site where the exams had been

posted with her unique username and password, she was unable to complete them because someone else had done so in her name. Police investigated connection data and found that connections had been made on that account from two different locations. One of them led to an address in Estepona, and to the former partner of the

homeowner, who lived at the address when the events took place. She had also been the victim’s former flatmate. During that time, she had stolen her username and password and taken the exams so she would know the questions and be able to improve her marks when she sat them in her own name.

Drunks divert flight A FLIGHT from Prestwick, Scotland, to Malaga, had to be diverted to Madrid due to an altercation on board. Seven people were arrested by Guardia Civil, the four people causing the problem and another three who resisted the authorities.

The passengers on the Ryanair flight were reportedly drunk and began to insult the passengers and crew. The captain decided to stop in Madrid where the Guardia Civil boarded the plane and removed them, before the rest of the passengers continued on to Malaga.

FOURTEEN people have been arrested in Murcia, Malaga, Almeria and Cuenca for drug-related crimes. According to National Police, the gang of Spaniards and Moroccans based in Malaga intended to distribute more than four tonnes of hashish in Spain. The drugs were bought in Morocco and stolen vehicles with false plates

were used to transport them. Four members were arrested in July when police discovered that 1,500 kilos of hashish were due to change hands at a shopping centre in Murcia. More recently, six members were arrested in Cuenca when they planned to hand over three tonnes of hashish to sellers.

26% are wary of Muslims TWENTY-SIX per cent of Spaniards admit they feel suspicious of Muslims. According to a study by La Caixa Foundation, the financial crisis has not worsened coexistence in areas where there is high cultural diversity, but people do have a slightly worse view regarding immigration. Ten per cent of those asked are against immigration and 47 per cent think that non-EU citizens should not be allowed to vote in the municipal elections. Meanwhile, 67 per cent of those who took part in the survey are against Muslim veils being banned in schools.

Motoring skills lacking in Spanish drivers SPANISH drivers fail in energy-efficient and safe driving, a study by international driving services and solutions provider MiX Telematics has revealed. The study, carried out among 800 professional drivers from the UK, France, Germany and Spain, suggests that both drivers and their employers should work together to achieve a safer and more efficient driving standard. Fifty per cent of the motorists polled have received a formal warning or fine for their driving performance. These warnings came in the form of sanctions and placed Spain at the top of the list, followed by France and Germany. Ninety per cent of the 800 polled claimed that safe driving is very

EMPLOYEES at a Costa Blanca business were so moved by the story of disabled youngster Keira Alvarez that they have dipped into their own pockets to help out. The staff at Eurochange clubbed together to present a cheque for €1,000 to help pay for the expensive treatment that she needs to receive in the coming weeks. Keira with her mother Debbie visited the company’s head office in Juan Fuster Zaragoza, Benidorm, to collect the cheque. A company spokesman said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to meet Keira in person and get to know more about her case and treatment. She was starved of oxygen at birth due to placental abruption and was non-responsive until they finally found a heartbeat after 15 minutes of CPR and two shots of adrenaline. The hottest October on record in Murcia region IT was the hottest October in Murcia and Valencia regions since records began. Murcia has recorded the warmest October since data began in the early 1940s with uncharacteristically high

temperatures. Fermin Elizaga, from the State Meterological Agency (AEMET) said the 10th month of the year had been “extremely warm and dry” across the coast and Balearics from Catalonia down to Andalucia.

The temperatures were due to atmospheric circulation, with warm winds blowing in from the east. However, moving into November cooler temperatures arrived along with strong gusts of wind this week.

FAST WORK: AVE keeps good time.

AVE is flying along nicely

THE Alicante-Madrid AVE high-speed train has achieved 85 per cent punctuality. This is better time-keeping than any of Spain’s other AVE connections, rail operator Renfe announced recently. With the trains reaching speeds of 306 kilometres an hour on the Albacete to Madrid section of track, some arrived at their destination with time to spare. At present, AVEs between Alicante and Albacete cannot go above 200 kilometres an hour. If all goes according to schedule and safety measures and signalling tests produce the right results, trains on this section should be running at 300 kilometres an hour after January. This will considerably cut the present journey times and on the Friday and Sunday non-stopping trains, they will be reduced to two hours and five minutes. More than 600,000 people have used the Alicante AVE since the service began last June, an increase of 41.2 per cent on last year’s figures. Renfe and the provincial tourist board are jointly promoting the Costa Blanca in Madrid, emphasising its cultural, sporting, leisure and gastronomic offer.

Cash wanted to restructure debt

KITCHEN appliance manufacturer Fagor Electrodomesticos needs €170 million to put it on its feet. The San Sebastian company is a cooperative and most of its workers are also partners in the firm. It is currently in voluntary talks with its creditors and has debts that some sources place at €800 million.

The company is “viable,” managing director Sergio Treviño told a Diario Vasco interviewer. But Fagor needs €170 million, he said, and needs it soon to restructure its debt and prevent a domino effect that could cause its collapse. Fagor Electrodomesticos has 5,600 employees worldwide, of whom 2,000 work in the company’s five Spanish factories.

Spain’s mining sector in decline FIREDAMP, the miner’s enemy, recently took six lives in Leon. Deadly methane gas released with the coal is rapid, silent and odourless. In the past the death of a caged canary was the only warning of firedamp’s presence, but the wellequipped miners in the Emilio del Valle pit found 694 metres were still vulnerable. Firedamp and Spain’s geologically-complex mining areas make its coal uncompetitive. Large quantities of methane in many mines in Leon and Asturias require heavy investment in maintenance and safety measures. The mining sector’s decline began in the

1960s and accelerated in the 1980s. At that time, 51,127 men were employed in Spain’s pits. Now there are fewer than 5,000. Between 1990 and 2012 the industry required €24 billion of public money, but Brussels has decreed that by 2018 only mines able to survive without government funding may remain open. Jobs will be cut to 4,500 and uncertainty regarding the future prompted last year’s miners’ strike and march on Madrid. Until then, the government has promised the unions that Spanish coal will generate 7 per cent of the output of the country’s power-stations.

Recovery in the UK gains momentum THE UK economy has been on a strengthening trend for the past few months thanks to improved economic data. The feel-good factor is contagious and is gathering pace across the entire spectrum of the economy. In yet another good report out in early October, optimism in the UK financial industry advanced to its strongest level in 17 years! This is extremely good news that will likely weigh on the Bank of England’s monetary policy direction in the form of forward guidance which focuses on keeping interest rates low for at least three years. The UK recovery has encouraged investors to speculate that the Bank of England will have to lift interest rates earlier than previously indicated. At the September meeting, Governor Mark Carney suggested that the

unemployment rate will have to drop below 7 per cent before a rate increase is considered. An increasing number of investors are betting that the Bank of England will have to raise interest rates earlier if the economy keeps overheating and the move higher in the pound certainly reflects this view. The activity in the UK property market is also contributing to the recovery and it seems that the UK Government wants to keep momentum going and the good news flowing, especially as we move closer towards the general election. Silvio Berlusconi’s attempt to unseat Prime Minister Enrico Letta dramatically failed and this contributed to restore calm in the entire region. Italy’s political crisis has been threatening the stability of the region for the past few months and Letta’s victory removes a major risk for the single currency. Nonetheless, the coalition remains fragile and any sign of political instability in Italy could send jitters again through the entire region. Overall Sterling has been nicely placed in the last month to take advantage of wobbles in Europe and the US, especially with the backdrop of an improving economic outlook.

It will be a long and complex process, requiring the legal dissolution of one Community and the creation of two new ones. Yes, you can remain as one Community, with some different regulations for each side of the road. If these rules do not involve changes in the original charter of the Community, a simple majority vote should suffice. If the Community has voted to accept smoking in the pool area, that is the rule. If someone wishes to change it, they can put forward a motion.

Urgent talks needed for late night music bars WHY do I get the impression that the Spanish authorities want to close pubs and restaurants down? In Calahonda’s El Zoco commercial centre (Mijas Costa, Malaga), to comply with regulations, the landlords are being told ‘no music must be heard.’ A lot of tourists use this complex as their holiday destination, mainly because of its music and late bars. There is no soundproofing in these old buildings and to make them legal would cost too much money. These pubs and restaurants rely on the terrace space as they can’t squeeze everyone into a small area with music playing. As a small business, if they want to thrive and make a living, they must give what the customers want. The authorities should have a meeting with all late night business owners and come to a compromise to keep these bars and restaurants open. These bars need to open to accommodate the people that go down to the beach for the sun all day. Night-time is when they spend money and enjoy the night-life. Let us keep the Costa del Sol a holiday destination and not an old persons’ retirement resort GKS (By email)

I really do not understand why people think it appropriate to insist on others wearing clothes when it is warm enough for clothing not to be required. The naked human body is no more offensive than the body of a hippopotamus. Ticking off IN regard to the letter from Anthony Jones that prostitution should be made legal in Spain (Letters Issue 1478). It has not been illegal since 1995, when it was decriminalised. There are, however, restrictions imposed by some municipalities on where they can operate. Pimping is illegal, but operating a brothel is legal, although the owner cannot directly benefit from the prostitutes’ earnings. I wish readers would do a little research before putting pen to paper. Heart-warming DOES Mr Hunter really want to see Spain’s family life and the peace we have, sent into oblivion? Isn’t it heart-warming to see several generations of families all together eating/walking/ enjoying life on the one day they can be together? Did we not leave the UK to escape rampant commercialism of our lives among other things? We do not need seven-day trading if we organise our lives accordingly. Companies will employ extra staff? Doubtful, existing staff will be forced to work extra hours as has happened in the UK. Yes, Spain should modernise and keep up with the times, but it must not destroy what is holy and rare in today’s world - family life, peace and tranquillity on one day a week. Face facts WHILE the debate over global warming heats up, it’s surprising that many experts ignore one of the main causes of environmental degradation: runaway world population. In 1900, the world population was 1.6 billion; in 1950, there were 2.5 billion; in the year 2000, 6.7 billion; and the projection for the year 2050 is that there will be almost 12 billion human beings. The life expectancy in most developed countries is already well into the 80s, and the rest of the world will achieve this in due course. A human being lives an average of three generations (75 years or more). With only two births per couple, when my wife and I die we’ll have left behind 12 more beings on the planet. It’s not arithmetic, but geometric. The Earth cannot sustain such growth, especially if we all aspire to a ‘First World’ lifestyle. Confronting this inconvenient truth entails difficult moral, ethical and sociological problems, but if we continue to ignore them the consequences for humanity will be unimaginable. No one is born a racist LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

BLACK OR WHITE: How racism can be passed on.

N

O child is born a racist. It is the world of adults that instils the idea that some of us may be different, or in some way unacceptable to others. To a child born in this 21st century, particularly in the West, it is perfectly normal for them to be surrounded by children of all creeds and ethnic backgrounds. Watch any group of children in creches or playgrounds and you will observe them all playing happily together, with no hint of favouritism or antagonism towards each other. So when does the ugly face of racial intolerance begin to manifest itself? Of course, a great deal of it is passed directly from the parents. Racist parents, constantly demonstrating intolerance of others, will sooner or later instil it into their own offspring. But I think in many cases it starts earlier than that and in my opinion, it is the media that must accept a lot of the blame. I think many of the children’s charities should sit down and have a rethink as to how they use the media to circulate their appeal campaigns. Day after day we are inundated with emaciated children, covered in flies with

Deadly bananas A BRITISH family had to evacuate their home after discovering dozens of venomous Brazilian wandering spiders in a bunch of bananas they had bought from a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Jet-setting gator bulging eyes and inflated bellies. There are no watersheds to these appeals, so from a tender age little ones are constantly exposed to sights of the appalling living conditions and deprived suffering of children and babies. And 99 times out of 100 they are all black! Is it any wonder then that youngsters begin to observe each other differently? What makes it worse is that these children are, by the very state of their circumstances, also observed by these young minds to be inferior to those with full bellies, white parents and taps full of water. And how do the black tots react to this situation? Well to me it’s obvious. Firstly they must, after observing these images of deprived children, most of whom are the

same colour as themselves, begin to themselves feel in some way inferior. This must soon be taken over by any number of emotions. Jealousy, confusion, mistrust, anger and, above all, among both black and white, the previously unrealised fact that they are indeed not all the same. And there you have it. All the ingredients of future unrest and possible conflict. The birth of racism. What these charity groups can do about the situation, I have no idea. Perhaps the best plan of action would be a watershed to showing these images. At least it would prevent impressionable minds from becoming racists before they can speak. OT far from Costa shorelines lies the wreck of a once proud ocean liner. Was the MV Monte Rosa cursed by fate? The ship’s damnation was to dog every nautical league of its last voyage. Setting out from Japan in February 1954, its 1,276 passengers and crew had every reason to look forward to a pleasant voyage. Their ocean odyssey would be crowned by a homecoming to an England many had not seen for years. Passengers included military families of servicemen based in the Far East. Various were survivors of the Korean War. Among the wounded were veterans of the Battle of the Hook. Many were stretcher-carried up the gangways, The ‘Dukes’ from the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, outnumbered in battle by five to one, had taken honours but casualties, too. Sailing from Yokohama and Kure, the

Defects in the super liner’s propulsion system needed constant running repairs. The luckless liner spent more time wallowing helplessly in the Indian Ocean than sailing. The three-week anticipated passage to Port Said in Egypt took an excruciating eight weeks to accomplish. It must have brought great relief to all on board when Monte Rosa finally limped into Port Said. Now, only the Mediterranean lay between them and England.

Those aboard endured eight weeks of hell The liner had known far happier days. It had once cruised the sun-drenched Aegean, Ionian, Adriatic and other seas that make up the Mediterranean. However, that was before the 1939-1945 World War.

From 1930 to 1945, the 13,882-tonne liner had been one of Germany’s fleet of super liners. Built by Hamburg shipbuilders Bohm and Voss the Monte Rosa was one of five sister-ships. Under the Kraft Durche Freude (Strength through Joy) leisure scheme Monte Rosa was to later provide German workers and their families the opportunity to take cruises that were previously the preserve of the elite. During the war the liner was used as a troopship. Departing the Egyptian port, the ill-fated liner embarked on the last leg of its voyage. But, sailing off Algiers an engine room fire resulted in a cataclysmic explosion. Four crew members were killed. The rescue of the remaining 1,276 passengers and crew was successful, but the hulk, whilst being towed to Gibraltar, sank beneath the waves. The Monte Rosa, seized as a war prize in 1945 and renamed MV Empire Windrush, pioneered West Indian immigration to Britain. Other liners soon joined in the massive Caribbean exodus. However, the MV Monte Rosa aka MV Empire Windrush will forever be known for its part in changing the face of Britain forever.

HE recent discovery of gold particles in the leaves of eucalyptus trees in Western Australia has completely overturned the old saying “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” Which made me wonder which other sayings simply don’t stand up to closer examination… Murphy’s Law (“if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong and at the worst possible moment”) is also way off the mark. For instance, ripping off a shirt button or breaking a shoelace when in a rush is probably down to the extra stress you’re under when you know you’re late and need to get somewhere fast. Likewise: “Healthy as a horse.” Any horse owner will tell you that a horse is like an Italian sports car. If it can break down, it will. “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out.” In

other words, don’t break out the barbie until May’s safely behind you. Really? This year in the UK, it was more like July before it was anywhere near warm enough to mothball those winter woollies. “Lightning never strikes in the same place twice.” Rubbish! Lightning strikes repeatedly wherever the surface offers

points of conductivity - usually in those places where the conditions produce lots of thunderstorms. After all, that’s the sole purpose of lightning conductors: to make the inevitable strikes harmless by offering them a seductive sitting duck that’ll deal with the discharge safely. “Cracking your knuckles gives you

arthritis.” Most medical studies have found no link whatsoever between this annoying habit and arthritis. The cracking sound isn’t bones being mangled out of shape but the release of pockets of gas from between joints. That said, long periods of knuckle-cracking may contribute to lesser grip strength. So best pack it in, anyway. Basically, these sayings are all just metaphors that were never meant to be taken literally. And straight out of the “I saw you coming” school of coffee-table books! Whistleblower’s revelations reminiscent of the Cold War Laura Poitras_Praxis Films

E just won’t go away. Whistleblower Edward Snowden, via journalist Glenn Greenwald, has revealed details of yet more illegal surveillance carried out by the US on its allies, one of whom is Spain. An aggrieved Spanish Government summoned the American ambassador in Madrid to explain his country’s actions. One of the questions asked might have been why, in just one month (December 10, 2012 to January 8, 2013) 60 million communications in Spain were monitored and stored by the National Security Agency (NSA). Multiply that number globally, and billions upon billions of phone calls, emails, text messages and web searches were monitored and stored over the past decade.

But we mustn’t worry too much. The NSA and GCHQ, among other eavesdropping organisations, are collecting and storing this data for reasons of national and international security. They assure us they are doing it to keep us safe from that most ubiquitous of enemies: Islamic

Serving as a Russian linguist in the Intelligence Corps in West Germany during the mid-80s I was tasked with listening to Soviet communications, principally those of the Third Shock Army in East Germany. And listen I did. But I didn’t hear a great deal. There just wasn’t that much going on. The Russian armies in East Germany had been rusting away for well over a decade. Russia had no money to restore the Red Army to its former glory. The same applied to the nuclear side of things. But that didn’t fit with the narrative of the time. Through the Reagan and Thatcher years the threat of the Soviet menace was cranked up, even when Gorbachev began to push for ‘perestroika’ and ‘glasnost’. They were determined to get every last mile they could out of the Cold War to keep those tax dollars coming in and keep the Military Industrial Complex rolling

on, though they insisted it was done with the intention of keeping the free peoples of the world safe from Bolshevik aggression. Why would it be any different today? Are Obama and Cameron cut from a more righteous cloth than their predecessors? I think not. Just as happened through the Cold War, we are bombarded with threats, this time of terrorism, through governmental channels and through the complicit mainstream media. So we allow our governments more power, we spend more on defence and on surveillance, and we allow our liberties to be eroded. Only when a person of conscience comes along and blows the whistle do we realise how much our governments have abused their powers. Thanks to Snowden we now have a chance not only to give the American ambassador in Madrid an ear bashing, but also to return America, the most powerfully militarised surveillance state the world has ever known, to some form of sane behaviour. The UK, no doubt, will follow suit.

PAIN’S President Mariano Rajoy would doubtless have preferred to pretend that the US does not monitor Spain’s communications. The Spanish right now are concerned about surviving on a day-to-day domestic basis. Few are going to waste precious energy over working themselves into an outraged lather about 90 million eavesdropped communications. They left that to the media, which embraced the NSA scandal as a change of flavour after the usual StrasbourgBarcenas-Crisis fodder. The government reluctantly responded by summoning the US ambassador for an explanation while quavering about “erosion of trust.” The NSA subsequently claimed that Spain and France carried out the original eavesdropping before passing the information to the US.

Rajoy must be relieved he did not do a Dilma Rousseff and cancel a Washington visit. Although, unlike his Brazilian counterpart, he has yet to receive an invitation and is unlikely to do anything to spoil his chances of getting one.

Right side of the law RAJOY prudently stayed away from the Madrid protest against the Court of Human Rights ruling on the Parot Doctrine. The Strasbourg ruling forced the government to backtrack on plans to make ETA convicts serve longer than their original sentences, to the dismay of victim support associations. No minister was present at the demonstration organised by the most vociferous groups although most

Used to turning out for anti-government demos in the Zapatero days, Esperanza Aguirre, Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, and others expected a warm welcome. To their surprise they got the bird, were booed and barracked. One of the associations, the AVT, called for the government to “reconsider” the Strasbourg decision. Rajoy knows there is nothing to reconsider because the government’s compliance is what living under rule of law means. Anything less reduces it to the same level as lawbreakers and terrorists.

Long-term terms THERE has never been a “life means life” sentence in Spain, although this is about to change. Some legal experts here have questioned whether this is wise or ethical as it eliminates the possibility of rehabilitation and prejudges its impossibility. Those used to the British system are happy enough to see it applied in some circumstances. How many people would feel easy at seeing Ian Brady on the street?

UST when you thought the world of political correctness could not get any sillier, along comes that strange body, the European Court of Human Rights, and demands that convicted terrorists of ETA, the militant Basque separatist group, be released from prison. Now, I have little to do with either side of the Basque conundrum, but I would feel rather concerned if a convicted terrorist - many having killed were to set up home next door. It seems the hand of a reluctant Spanish government has been forced in the matter, which, as with many rulings by the European Court, appears based on technicalities rather than common sense. These busy-

They could bond over dinners, the busybody perhaps sharing

riveting details of red tape and bureaucracy, while the terrorist could hold court about how to make a home-made bomb to cause maximum damage. I wonder how quickly, at that point, the motion to release the prisoners would be rescinded..? But at least that way, the families of the victims would be spared the assassins’ gloating presence in their communities. And while ETA declared an end to its campaign in 2011, few would

surely sleep soundly with the knowledge of who was now skulking around the neighbourhood freely. One of those released, Ines del Rio, was shown in the media smiling as she left prison, where she spent 26 years for her role in 23 murders and terrorist attacks during the 1980s. Unsurprisingly, the decision was vehemently protested against by the public and government alike - two sides of a coin that rarely agree.

Just over a year for each kill doesn’t sound like any justice I would subscribe to, yet the European Court insisted that the releases be made and, in some cases, compensation paid. Now, I believe it is more probable for pigs to fly or hell to freeze over than for any President of the United States to release confirmed terrorists early or at all. Certainly not from a nation that is so paranoid about national security that it spies on the rest of the world - another source of outrage here in Spain, where it was recently revealed that the US National Security Agency had tapped some 60 million phone calls in just one month. I can’t tell you which is worse political correctness or ardent disregard and disrespect of other nations - but if I were a terrorist or criminal of any kind, there is no doubt that I would base myself in Europe, where I could wave the Human Rights flag at the first sign of trouble. Thus keeping those busy Eurocrats in jobs paid for by the European taxpayer.

Di Stefano: One of the all-time greats By Tony Matthews RECENTLY I had the pleasure of making contact with Alfredo Di Stefano, one of the greatest ever footballers. Born on July 4, 1926, in Barracas, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina, he is one of the oldest former internationals and indeed, ex-Real Madrid players, alive today. Widely regarded as one of the finest footballers of all time, he is most associated with Real Madrid and was instrumental in their domination of the European Cup during the 1950s, a period in which the Spanish club won the trophy in five consecutive seasons from 1956. Alfredo, nicknamed ‘Saeta rubia’ (Blond Arrow), was a powerful centreforward with great stamina. A wonderful tactician, he had great vision, possessed a powerful shot and could

play virtually anywhere on the pitch. The fourth highest scorer in Spanish League football history (Primera/La Liga) with 377 goals in 521 appearances, he’s also Real Madrid’s second top League scorer of all time with a total of 216 goals in 282 top-flight matches played over a period of 11 years, from 1953 to 1964. Alfredo’s playing career spanned 21 years: 194566. During that time he served with two Argentinian clubs, River Plate (1945-49) and Huracan (on loan, 1946), CF Millionarios in Colombia (1949-53) and two in Spain, Real Madrid and Espanyol (1964-66). On the international front, he won a total of 41 senior caps - six for Argentina (1947-48, six goals scored), four for Colombia (1949-50) and 31 for Spain (1957-61, 23

He won six trophies as a manager/ head coach before quitting football in 1991. In November 2000, Alfredo was appointed Honorary President of Real Madrid and three years later, to celebrate UEFA’s Jubilee, he was selected as the ‘Golden Player of Spain’ by the Royal Spanish Football Federation as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years. In May 2006, the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium was officially opened as Real Madrid’s training ground and four years ago, he was named by Brazilian superstar Pele as one of the

‘125 greatest living footballers and the best Argentinian player ever’. Placed fourth, behind Pele, Diego Maradona, and Johan Cruyff, in a vote organised by the French weekly magazine France Football whereby former Ballon d’Or winners were consulted to elect the Football Player of the Century, Alfredo has been, without doubt, one of the greatest players ever to grace the world scene Several others stars of yesteryear, including Eusebio, Luis Suarez, Sandro Mazzola and Welsh hero John Charles, all described Alfredo as ‘the most complete footballer in the history of the game’. Dress-size matters SIZE 16 women are among the happiest and most comfortable in their own skin, according to a new study. The research found 74 per cent are happy with their appearance, nearly twice as many as the 42 per cent who are size six. And 49 per cent of women whose weight has fluctuated in the past three years, reveal they were at their happiest with a fuller, size 16 figure. The research also found 52 per cent of size six women would like to be curvier. The results showed women sized 14 to 18, have a more positive frame of mind when it comes to their appearance. And in comparison, those sized six to 10 are much more critical of their look, with just 59 per cent saying they are happy with their appearance. The findings also suggest size six ladies are often envious of those with curves, with 35 per cent wishing for a fuller figure because it’s ‘sexier.’ Of these, 31 per cent said they felt curves would make clothes more flattering, and 24 per cent said it would improve their body confidence.

Babies remember music played whilst in womb

SCIENTISTS believe that babies who were played music whilst still in the womb remembered the tune months after being born. Researchers at the University of Helskini (Finland) gave CDs to 12 pregnant women and asked them to play it five times a week during the last three months of pregnancy before destroying the CD after giving birth to ensure any memory of the songs came from pregnancy. The researchers said that the babies could remember the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star up to four months after birth. The researchers believed: “These results show that babies are capable of learning at a very young age and that the effects of learning remain apparent in the brain for a long time.” However, the study did point out that playing classical music in the womb may not be a way of boosting a baby’s intelligence later on in life. Unborn babies recall music up to four months after birth.

Parents and children dressing alike? SOME high street fashion retailers appear to have come up with a new way to make money… selling matching outfits for parents and children. Do you think that nowadays children are often dressed in more adult clothing? Do you think this has an effect on their childhood?

THE idea of parents and children wearing matching outfits got a mixed reaction from our readers. Diana Feria, a mother who is about to open a shop in Arroyo de la Miel for second hand baby items said; “My husband and I share the belief that every person, be it adult or child has his or her own personality and linking them by dressing alike is not “logical.’ We’ve never dressed like our children or made them dress in the same way as us, because we each have our own identity to express. Even if we had twins we would never dress them alike.” Elise Clement said there is nothing wrong with matching outfits, however, she does

European Day of Wine THIS Sunday wine amateurs are called to celebrate the European Day of Wine Tourism. Organised by the European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN), this day aims at

Spanish home-made mango jam hits stores THE first home-made mango jam manufactured in Spain has been launched. The product can be found in gourmet shops, herbalists and fruit shops all over the

country from €2.50. The jam is made with no added preservatives or artificial colours, and is 75 per cent mango flesh and 22 per cent sugar. A PLEASURE: No need to cut down on chocolate if on a diet.

Chocolate doesn’t make people fat CHOCOLATE has gone from guilty pleasure to just a pleasure. A study carried out at the University of Granada has revealed that teenagers who eat more chocolate have less excess fat on their bodies. The research studied chocolate as a food traditionally linked to obesity, and measured the body fat index of 1,458 Spanish teenagers. The findings were surprising: those who eat more chocolate are the thinner.

The researchers, however, didn’t seem to be so surprised as they stressed the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the once-banned-fromdiets food. In fact, they claim what makes people fat in chocolate are the sugar and milk used to make it. The researchers added that cutting down on chocolate on a diet is pointless as, although it doesn’t make people lose weight, it doesn’t make them fat either.

That could certainly be the cause of him being grumpy and wary when we were going to touch where he was feeling extra tender. I have known Nazli about 20 years and trust her professionally. Now BB is having extra food (four meals a day) and we only touch him when he comes to us and do not touch his body. We just tickle him under the chin. Nazli did emphasise that he is not out of the woods yet and time, patience and love will work with the healing process. Rise in price of resale property

THE price of second hand properties across Spain has risen slightly in the last month. In seven of the autonomous communities, house prices showed an upturn in October, with the average price now standing at €1,768 per square metre, a rise of 0.7 per cent. The increases were registered in Catalunya which saw a rise of 1.3 per cent; La Rioja (1 per cent); Valencia and the Canaries (0.8 per cent); the Balearics (0.6 per cent); Murcia (0.5 per cent) and Madrid (0.3 per cent). Price falls were reported in Navarra (1.3 per cent) and Cantabria (1.1 per cent). The most expensive property last month was in Guipuzcoa and Vizcaya in the Basque Country, where average prices stood at €3,230 per square metre.

Town planner Jose Maria Ezquiaga said that roundabouts are useful tools to regulate traffic at intersections, but they are not

This year’s autumn exhibition at Madrid’s Prado Museum provides an insight into Spanish history, culture and art, covering the period between 1650 and 1680.

The king and Velazquez Velazquez had been influenced by Rubens and was acknowledged as one of the finest portrait painters of the baroque era, although never quite reaching the status of his contemporary, Rembrandt. During his visits to Italy, considered the Mecca for artists, his talent as a portrait artist was recognised by Pope Innocent X. When he returned to Madrid as official artist to the royal family, his relationship with the king gave him access to the palace, which was a rare privilege. The first part of the exhibition displays portraits of the pope and cardinals in Rome and includes two of King Felipe IV. A large section is devoted to the numerous portraits of the queen, Mariana of Austria, Maria Teresa, both her stepdaughter and cousin, and especially her

T was a defining moment in Felipe IV’s reign with political, military and financial crisis, and the culmination of Velazquez’s illustrious career as official artist to the royal family during the golden age of Spanish art. It also provides a comparison between his works and those of his assistants and successors, Juan Bautista Martinez del Mazo, his son-in-law, and Juan Carreno. Felipe IV had been going through a difficult period when he married Mariana of Austria in 1649. His first wife, Elizabeth of France, had died in 1644 and two years later he lost his 17-year-old son and heir, Baltasar Carlos, to smallpox. Two years after the marriage, La Infanta Margarita was born and in the same year Velazquez returned to Madrid from Rome. It was the start of an extraordinarily close relationship between the king and the artist.

Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez daughter, La Infanta Margarita, wearing the traditional framed dresses in a variety of colours. His paintings of Felipe Prospero and La Infanta Margarita were considered to be among the finest portraits of children up to that time. Although his earlier portraits were classical with the subject against a dark background, he took advantage of using real locations in the palace and adding personal objects such as flower vases, pets and ornaments to give a greater sense of family life, space and depth to his works. This is evident in his masterpiece, Las Meninas, which is included as part of the exhibition even though it remains in its permanent place in the Prado.

Las Meninas A family portrait Despite its complexity it remains a family portrait including La Infanta Margarita, her maids of honour, dwarfs and pets as well as Velazquez himself and the king and queen, who are reflected in

the mirror. Velazquez is believed to have borrowed the idea of using mirrors in his works from the Arnolfini Marriage, Van Eyck’s masterpiece, in the National Gallery, London.

Some works never before seen in Spain Controversy has arisen over a ‘copy’ of Las Meninas, attributed to his son-in-law, which belongs to the William Bankes collection at Kingston Lacy in Dorset, UK, now part of the National Trust, believed to have been painted in 1660, the year of Velazquez’s death. It came to England during the early part of the 19th century. Art historian, Dr Matias Diaz, from the Spanish Royal Academy of Art, who has spent years researching the origin of the painting, said: “I consider this work to be a first, smaller draft of Las Meninas, painted by the master himself.” This is contested by the exhibition’s curator, Javier

La Infanta Margarita in blue dress by Diego Velazquez Portus, who argues: “A simple study of the Kingston Lacy work shows it lacks colour and detail and it is not an original.” A close inspection reveals differences. There is a mystery over the Cross of the Order of Santiago, an honour bestowed on Velazquez by the king in 1659 and who ordered it to be added to his tunic in the main painting after his death. In addition, the king and queen are clearly reflected in the mirror and he delicately holds the brush. In the Kingston Lacy painting the cross is not apparent, neither is the brush and the reflection in the mirror is unclear. There is also a likeness between this work and the family portrait of Martinez del Mazo, painted in 1665. This controversy is likely to remain unresolved.

The continuity of Velazquez’s style The final section covers the period following the deaths of Velazquez in 1660 and the king

in 1665. These are works by Mazo and Carreno, illustrating the continuity of Velazquez’s style. Margarita married her uncle Leopold of Austria to forge an alliance, which led to the transfer of several of these paintings to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The portraits of Queen Mariana, who became Regent, while her son Carlos was a child, depicts her in mourning, while the young king, Carlos II, appears in his full royal regalia. The exhibition, organised in conjunction with the AXA Foundation, displays 29 major works of which 15 belong to Velazquez. Many of the works, on loan from overseas museums and private collections, have never previously been on display in Spain.

Portugal steals Spain’s thunder By Mike Walsh THE Portuguese housing market has experienced an 80 per cent year-onyear surge in sales since the right to residency scheme was endorsed by Parliament. Described as the Golden Visa scheme it is attracting non-European Union buyers and investors. Residency in Portugal is available to buyers who invest a minimum of €500,000 in property. It is thought that this will further support the country’s recovery. Chinese and Russian buyers are fuelling the recovery. Fine and Country, a real estate agency placed at the high end of the market, revealed that property valued at €40 million has changed hands during the first six months of 2013. Chinese buyers are fuelling the recovery. The lower end of the market is inactive as banks have no lending liquidity.

The long-term view is that those with more than €500,000 in their wallets will have the means to add to their Portuguese investments. The Golden Visa scheme is further supported by a flat rate of 23 per cent tax against all income earned in Portugal and zero tax on earnings accumulated abroad. Those with pensions are exempt. Nigel Salmon, Director of Girasol Homes, a real estate market leader that operates in both Portugal and Spain, said: “Our Portugal office has seen a 30 per cent increase in enquiries over the past four months. However, Spain is still the dominant market for us, especially in Modern Design in the Alicante Region of Spain where sales have doubled.” Spain is still playing catch-up. A real estate pundit stated: “Providing that other countries do not produce more attractive schemes, we look forward to the future with confidence.”

A Toyota 2014 RAV4 for the New Year JAPANESE manufacturer Toyota has introduced a series of improvements to its RAV4 model for next year. The fourth generation of Toyota’s compact sports utility vehicle has seen more features added with an all-wheel drive engine line-up, new equipment and new technology. The all-wheel drive version of the 2014 RAV4 combines the Euro 5 compliant 2.0 litre D-4D turbodiesel with the Integrated Dynamic Drive System, Toyota’s all-wheel drive technology. The Integrated Dynamic Drive System enhances performance, handling and safety under all driving conditions, the manufacturer claims. Using information from various sensors (speed, steering angle, and yaw rate), the

system continuously controls the torque transfer between the front and rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in front of the rear differential. Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, with front-wheel drive (100:0) automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to improve petrol consumption. For off-road driving, the system allows drivers to lock torque distribution in a fixed, 50:50 ratio to speeds up to 40km/h. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the 1,998cc engine develops 124hp/91kW at 6,000rpm, and 310Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,400rpm.

The 2014 RAV4 will be available in a new Dark Brown Metallic body colour with a new, angular, 10-spoke 18” alloy wheel design. The interior may now be finished in a choice of four colour schemes: Black, Grey, Terracotta and new Beige, which features two-tone seats and a leather finish to the main dashboard panel and central door panels. Equipment upgrades will also define the 2014 RAV, which will be available from €26,000.
