Flash floods as skies open and rain pours down

By EWN special correspondent David Anderson FLASH FLOODS and severe storms almost brought Palma to a standstill. Within minutes the main shopping street was turned into a fast-flowing river. High winds and rain caused chaos and damage with most side streets under deep water and small shops flooded out. One moment it was a pleasant afternoon, the next the skies turned black, thunder and lightning struck, then the heavens opened. Visitors and locals alike sought sanctuary in the shops as the flood water roared down Jaume III.

Storm facts

Traffic cones, palm trees, flip-flops and shoes were swept down the street. Tiles and spouts were blown from the rooftops. Soaked holidaymakers, who earlier had been basking in the sun, couldn’t believe their eyes.

“I have been been coming to Palma for 20 years and have seen nothing like it,” said Margaret Ramsay. “The storm came out of nowhere and everyone ran for cover. It was a scene of utter panic.” Turn to Page 4

A MAN has been arrested in Palma for attacking and threatening to kill police officers and damaging cars with an axe and a large hammer. Local Police received a call that a man was destroying the front windscreens of several parked cars between Calle Antonio Frontera and Calle Pablo Inglesias in Palma. The Immediate Intervention Unit was dispatched to handle the situation and

approached the 31-year-old African man. The man ran from the police unit and when they caught up, he confronted them. He wielded the axe and hammer, and threatened to kill the two police officers before advancing on them. According to reports, one officer drew his gun to stop the man getting closer and the other approached him from behind and threw him to the ground in order to disarm him.

Hell’s Angels’ €150,000 charge THE Hell’s Angels in Mallorca charged €150,000 to extort money from a German suspected fraudster. The vice-president of Hell’s Angels in Mallorca, Khalil Youssafi, was contacted by a man who claimed to have been scammed in a fraudulent investment operation. He wanted them to get his money back

from the man charged with masterminding the operation, Jurgen von Hohenlohe. He claimed he is related to the German Royals, although the truth is not clear. Youssafi told the man it was his best chance at getting his money back, as he wouldn’t get anything when the case went to trial.

He and his brother contacted Hohenlohe, who was arrested in March 2012 accused of scamming victims out of more than €9 million, once he was released on bail. Both he and his wife denied the charges. The Hell’s Angels made a habit of extorting Germans who were allegedly involved in fraud.

HILE Halloween has ballooned into a massive worldwide event, in Spain the more traditional celebrations fall on All Saints’ Day. November 1 is a national holiday and queues form at cemeteries as families remember the dead. Families buy flowers, visit the tombs of deceased relatives and spend the night praying for them. Sweetmeats known as ‘Saints’ Bones’ are made with marzipan filled with egg yolk. They are shaped in the form of a bone and can be found in most cake shops, along with ‘buñuelos’ which are fried dough balls with sweet toppings. Celebrating Halloween has become popular in Spain in recent years, with many stores selling foodstuffs and decorations, and schools holding costume parties. Father held for assault as daughter rejects hijab A MAN of Moroccan origin has been arrested in Palma after he allegedly abused his daughter, aged 15, because she refused to wear a Muslim veil. The report was made by the

headmaster at the young girl’s school, where staff noticed marks of possible abuse. In her statement the girl said her father forced her to wear the traditional Muslim veil or ‘hijab’ and

when she said she didn’t want to wear it he beat her with his belt. The report stated the girl seemed to have serious injuries. The 46-year-old father denies the accusations, saying he never

struck her with his belt or forced her to wear the veil. He claimed they had argued because she refused to study and he hit her with his hand in the heat of the moment.

Property optimism A RISE in projects to build new homes in Mallorca has been greeted with renewed optimism. The improvement marks a turning point in the property market compared to recent years, according to The Mallorca Building Engineers Association. It has seen 607 projects to build new houses in the first nine months of the year. This is a slight improvement over the 540 projects from last year, and is enough for the association to be optimistic. Its president, Ignacio Martinez, claimed 2013 will end with a total of 809 projects to build new houses passed.

Martinez goes further and said that the island is in the midst of a change in the property market. And this change is here to stay, as the association estimates that 2014 will end with 1,000 projects to build new houses passed. A shortage of new housing stock in the Balearic Islands has been thanked for the rise in projects. This region, as opposed to others like Valencia, has seen a fall in new houses available to buy. On a less positive side, the Mallorca Building Engineers Association foresees a rise in prices for building plots in coming years.

₏2.7 million to promote Balearics THE Balearic Islands regional government is to spend ₏2.7 million to promote Mallorca, Palma, Ibiza and Formentera as tourist destinations. The government’s aim is to promote the islands as tourist destinations at specialised fairs. The so-called Balearic Tourist Promotion Action Plan will use new technologies to reach its goal. Regional government president Jose Ramon Bauza presented the plan together with the Tourism and Sports representative Carlos Delgado at the Consolat de Mar presidential residence. Delgado pointed out this action plan is the result of the work of his department in collaboration with the local government of each of the Balearic Islands.

Young hero saves abused woman in street THE action of a young man prevented a woman from being hit by her husband in the streets of Palma. The local hero intervened to prevent the abuser from

punching his victim in the body. The incident took place in Calle General Rodrigo Ortega, where the young man, aged 27, was having a

drink at a nearby bar. He witnessed how a man, aged 61, was punching his wife in the body. He ran from the bar and stopped the man from

punching the woman by putting himself in between. National Police arrived shortly after to subdue the abuser, who turned out to have a record of 37 similar

offences. The victim was taken to the Son Llatzer hospital for a medical check-up. She sustained injuries to her chest, face and back.

Lions spectacles hit new heights

THE Torrevieja Costa Lions Club passed another milestone this week when its President Janette Bennett delivered more than 1,000 pairs of used spectacles to the Centro de Reciclaje de Gafas ‘Melvin Jones’ in San Vicente del Raspeig, Alicante. Emilio Moreno, the centre’s director, was delighted to receive the donation which brings the total provided by Torrevieja Lions to over 9,000 pairs in six years. This achievement is outstanding for the club and has been achieved with great support from the customers and staff of Specsavers in Torrevieja. The Lions have also agreed a collaboration with Francisco Jurado, Director of Specsavers in Guardamar del Segura. Nationally, Specsavers have launched an initiative in all their Spanish stores to collect used spectacles to donate to their local Lions Clubs for onward delivery to the recycling centre. The used spectacles are cleaned, graded and reframed at the recycling centre where they are then held awaiting orders from all round the world where eye care is not readily available.

He does not belong to the ‘buy Spanish’ school, Roig said. “You have to buy the best product at the best possible price. But by buying products in your own country, you generate wealth and obtain logistical advantages.”

WE’RE all different, us humans, that’s what makes us unique. So obviously, when it comes to applying for a job, we have our own way of going about writing a CV or prepping for an interview. And according to the confessions of a recruitment consultant, who wishes to remain anonymous, some job seekers are that little bit quirkier than others. For example, if you didn’t get a call back for a job it could have been the questionable photo attached to your CV that let you down. According to our recruitment source, some jobseekers just don’t seem to realise that an application for a job isn’t the same posting on a

Facebook page. Rather than the professional head and shoulders shot normally required, apparently recruitment agencies spend half their day bent over in laughter looking at the ridiculous pictures jobseekers send in. Like what? Well, how about a CV, where the first page is an A4 size photo of a woman wearing little hot pants and reclining on a tree. Or another classic mistake

that is - a photo on a CV of a girl wearing a Santa hat, who is clearly inebriated at a party. Recruitment agencies even get sent family photos where the jobseeker writes something like: “I’m the one in the blue shirt.” Some people have been known to send entire cover letters in capital letters too, while others write CVs in Romanesque-style fonts that look like calligraphy, or use

fluorescent colours. “No, no, no,” say recruitment experts. When it comes to CV writing the more normal and classic the style the better. And it doesn’t massively matter if your CV is longer than two pages as long as it contains interesting content, spelt correctly. Although the trend at the moment among many young graduate CVs is to send one page with really small font, which some recruitment experts like. And finally, nowadays with the internet everything moves at a fast pace, so as a jobseeker there is no time to be sitting around twiddling fingers. New jobs arriving to recruitment agencies are apparently posted online almost instantly, and recruiters begin to receive CVs within seconds. These CVs are sent on to the client within one or two hours, so it’s vital to be fast if you want to be interviewed.

Spain inching its way to recovery... THE jobless queues in Spain shrank more than expected to below 26 per cent in September. Although still amongst the highest levels in Europe, it was good news at the same time that Spain officially exited recession

for the first time in 27 months. It raises hopes that Spain may have finally turned the corner in its fight for economic recovery. The unemployment rate stood at 25.98 per cent, down from 26.26 per cent and

beating a predicted rate of 26.1 per cent. According to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, the number of jobless is now at its lowest level since June 2007. Unemployment fell by 72,800 to 5.904 million in the third quarter of the year, still

well above the 5.778 million, or 25.02 per cent a year ago. Private businesses were the driving factor in the increase in jobs. While 12,600 jobs were lost in the public sector, 52,000 were created in the private sector, according to the INE National Institute of Statistics. On top of that there has been a migration back to their homelands of the weakest. These did not include thousands of immigrants Santander, Sabadell and Bankinter, unable to find work. Time for a rethink on sex trade HARDLY a week goes by without another report of women being ‘freed’ having been forced to work as prostitutes. Whilst I am sure this is a problem in many countries, surely the ‘turn a blind eye’ attitude many people in Spain seem to have to prostitution is one of the main causes of the abuse of these women. The way forward is to tightly control the ‘trade’. At the moment it seems to exist in a legal grey area, with rules differing from place to place. Prostitution should be expressly permitted in law, but only by licensed operators in licensed premises, subject to inspection and control by the police and health authorities. Coupled with a total ban on street prostitution, it would go a long way to solving the problems of criminal gangs intimidating women into becoming ‘sex slaves’. Anthony Jones, Mazarron (Alicante)

Take notice IT’S amazing how the accumulation of rubbish in the streets has woken the coastal residents up to the fact that they are always short-changed by the administration in Orihuela. The minority government is struggling to make the money go round, and we on the coast are the losers. They are spending the money on projects in Orihuela and the surrounding villages in the hope that they will get reelected. There is no need for the government to take the coast into consideration, as we have no representation. That is in part the fault of residents not bothering to vote in the local elections, and the Press not even bothering to have someone present when the plenary meetings are being held. People on the coast are not aware what gets decided in

Bloomin’ disaster RE ‘Red tide disaster’ (Axarquia, Issue 1477) where fishing boats have had to remain tied up for months as the shellfish beds have been closed due to an algal ‘bloom’. This is the inevitable consequence of pollution. Nitrates from fertilisers plus sewage swept to sea feed the algae. Combined with warmer temperatures, these toxic

blooms will become more and more common, causing huge economic loss to the fishing industry and untold damage to the environment. It is in the best interests of everyone to have stricter controls of what we put into the environment. Mankind cannot continue to poison the land and sea with impunity forever more. Trade issues PERHAPS someone could explain why the world’s major manufacturing industries are concentrated in China, leaving the European workforce depleted of work opportunities. There appears to be a considerable number of contradictory, two-faced UK and European politicians who are quite willing to carbon tax our own homegrown industries into oblivion, but yet trade heavily with countries which pollute not only themselves but also the world. Britons first IN 1993, I went to Egypt, stayed at a hotel near Aswan. We chatted with Betani, a lovely Egyptian lad. He had not heard of Elvis or The Beatles, but he did say that he wanted to marry a nice English girl because “I can live in England and the Government will give me money!” It is no wonder the hardworking people of the UK are angry. Another occasion a guy in Calais, France, had been caught trying to enter the UK. The customs officer said: “Why don’t you stay in France?” He replied: “No, I want to go to England because I will be given money.” The UK has been a global joke for many years with respect to its benefits system. Their problem I READ the letter by D Blanchette (Issue 1476) about overpopulation in Third World countries and wondered how the women even get pregnant and carry through to birth if they are so emaciated. Anorexia usually stops a woman from having periods and therefore pregnancy. It takes two non-starved people to create a pregnancy. So are we being conned? Not comparing like with like... LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

DON’T often follow up on mail I receive, mainly because I think you can get too bogged down with a single subject. Frankly, with a short blurb such as mine, there simply isn’t enough space for such columnist luxury. I will, however, make an exception with regard to last week’s published missive, which likened the British expat community in Spain to the immigrants now threatening to swamp the UK. I agree many of the British are inclined to stick to their own, both socially and abodewise. It is, I suppose a tribal and comfort zone situation, and in many cases (not mine, I hasten to add) perfectly understandable. But there are one or two glaring differences. We don’t strut around with posters insulting and indeed openly threatening our Spanish hosts. We don’t try to change their customs and laws and we don’t insist that Spanish women should be classed as second-class citizens and clad in shrouds. In fact, as another correspondent observed, apart from the concerns now being raised by their ever increasing illegal numbers, the British had no

BRITS IN SPAIN: Not like immigrants in UK. particular trouble encompassing the West Indian and Asian immigrants, many of whom have integrated and brought a very welcome diversity to us notoriously staid Brits. It is only since the influx of the Muslim extremists that all the real troubles have reared up. It is a large section of the Islamic followers who have caused most of the unrest and bitterness. A situation that is now finally

being openly discussed by disgruntled British inhabitants and indeed many politicians. If a whole section of people from another religion and culture make every effort to disrupt and change the society that has taken them in, who can blame its locals for getting annoyed? You can’t really get more ungrateful than that! To compare British expats to these people is not only ridiculous, but to my mind also quite insulting. I think most of us are extremely grateful that we can live freely in the sunshine with our colourful and generally laid-back hosts. OK, so perhaps many could make more effort with the language, and I agree there are those who moan too much. Mind you, these are mainly people that moan about just about anything anyway! But heaven forbid we should try and change their culture, religion or laws. If I personally didn’t agree with the way our hosts lived, I would simply ‘up the roots’ and move to a country I did find ‘acceptable’. It’s a pity the same decision is not being made by many of those who are not satisfied with the British culture and way of life! As a final note I couldn’t make head nor tail of last week’s missive likening me to Sean Connery. Was it complimentary or insulting? Don’t ask me, I only scribble here!

Sick of it I USED to enjoy reading your free newspaper, especially the intelligent, political comments by a couple of contributors. They would highlight the real criminals, those people who gambled in the banking institutions. The banks the people of Europe have bailed out and now are facing the consequences of austerity with lost jobs, homes and much more. All we get now are the rantings of Leapy Lee. UK Taxman Targets Rental Income s tax authorities everywhere look to increase tax revenue, rental income is coming under closer scrutiny. If you own and rent out property, whether in Spain, the UK or elsewhere, you need to be sure that you are paying tax correctly. It is quite easy to make mistakes, especially if the property is located in one country and you are resident in another. In the UK, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) calculates that it loses up to £500 million a year from underpaid tax on rental income. It has launched a ‘Let Property Campaign’ to encourage landlords to regularise their position, whether they have made genuine errors or deliberately not declared income. It is open to UK resident landlords and covers holiday lettings, including properties owned abroad in countries like Spain. A press release from HMRC warned: “HMRC will use information it holds about property rental in the UK and abroad, along

For those that fail to come forward, higher penalties - or even criminal prosecution - could follow.” With increasing exchange of information between countries, you can expect the UK authorities to find out about Spain property and vice versa. Where necessary, the UK and Spanish tax

authorities can help each other collect tax. What are your tax obligations if you are a UK resident owning property in Spain? If you own property in Spain but are a UK resident, you need to comply with both the UK and Spanish regulations. As a UK taxpayer, you need to declare the rent on your annual UK tax return. Expenses can be deducted. Any gains on sale need to be declared and taxed in the UK. Overseas property must also be declared as part of your estate for UK inheritance tax purposes. Here in Spain, rental income from the property owned by nonresidents is taxed at 24.75% (on net income after allowable expenses for EU residents). If you do not rent out the property, or when it is unlet, a notional income is deemed to arise and tax is due on this. When you sell the property you

will pay tax on the capital gain under the savings income regime, at rates of between 21% and 27%. The net equity value of the property is currently liable to wealth tax if valued at over the individual allowance of €700,000 for individuals and €1,400,000 for couples owning in joint names. A mortgage can reduce its taxable value. The property will be subject to succession tax, which can be expensive for non-residents. Spain and the UK apply their own tax rules so the taxable amount is different in each country. You do not however have to pay tax twice. You can offset the Spanish tax paid against the UK liability to avoid double taxation. If the UK tax is higher, further tax will be due in the UK. If the UK tax is lower, you do not get a refund for the difference. This article looks at Spanish

rental income and gains for UK residents, but you will have similar tax considerations if you are resident in Spain and own UK property. It can be hard enough getting tax planning right in one country; getting it right when it involves two countries is even more complicated. ICK CLEGG is not everyone’s favourite, even - or particularly amongst Lib-Dems. Joking apart, his remark that “Parents don’t want ideology to get in the way of their children’s education” will raise a hollow laugh in Spain. Education minister Jose Ignacio Wert’s ideology is now stamped all over the Spanish system, but in one respect he cannot be faulted. Students must obtain at least 5.5 in access exams to obtain a university grant although the cut-off mark is 5. This is patently unfair, say Wert’s critics, but the unloved minister pointed out that grants are not loans but funded by the taxpayer. “A greater effort is asked,” he claimed. There are many motives for criticising Wert but they should not include his policies on grants.

Strasbourg steps in TO the Spanish government’s intense frustration, the Strasbourg court of Human Rights has backed ETA terrorist Ines del Rio. Del Rio was already in prison when remission through work was removed from Spain’s Penal Code in 1995.

Responsible for 23 deaths, she received a 3,823-year prison term but under existing Spanish law would serve only 30 years. With remission she should have left prison in 2008. Instead, the authorities applied the same formula used with Etarra Henri Parot in 2006, deducting good behaviour allowances from each count and not the 30-year maximum. Applying the Parot Doctrine retrospectively is illegal, Strasbourg has said. Initially this ruling affects only Ines del Rio, although other Etarras will walk free. But they and Del Rio return to a different Spain from the one they left - one where there is no place for ETA which declared a permanent ceasefire two years ago. Furthermore, critics forget the Parot Doctrine still applies to Etarras or anyone else with sentences imposed after 1995.

honour” following his allegations of illegal funding and salary top-ups. Barcenas attended the hearing via video link as he is on remand for fraud and money-laundering. Unrepentantly contradicting De Cospedal he told the court he personally had handed her envelopes of black money. The party’s groan was audible all over Spain. Everyone had stopped talking about Barcenas and De Cospedal has stirred things up again. She gives the strong impression she is out to look after herself. This is common amongst politicians but usually they make a better job of concealing it.

Only here for beer WITH little money around and European elections looming, politicians fear they will not be sufficiently in the public eye. Inaugurations, openings and closings are thin on the ground and they will be seen at fewer politically-expedient functions. If they but knew it, they harvest votes only from those with invites. And they are only interested in the lunch or dinner after.

Menuda, Tearal and Presto were all crowned winners in their respective categories. Petrouchka III, owned by Jamie Binimelis won the ORC 1 category for larger vessels in terms of length. Binimelis’s crew raced 54 nautical miles from Palma to Cabrera and back within 10 hours, 19 minutes and seven seconds, and were the fastest in both real time and elapsed time. In the same category Nadir owned by Pedro Vaquer placed second and Histolab owned Jose Juan Torres, finished in third position. Hospital locker room thief held A MAN, 31, was arrested after breaking into 50 lockers in the women’s changing rooms at Son Espases Hospital and hiding in a bathroom. He stole several objects, clothes and was caught by security guards. He locked himself in a bathroom and refused to come out so they called the police. He eventually opened the door and was found with towels, clothes, bandages and thermometers, amongst other items. He told police that he had taken cocaine and his wife wouldn’t let him enter their home. He claimed he needed a shower so he went to Son Espases and broke into the lockers.

Five new deliveries expected in Soller A GAY couple from Soller has announced that they will have five children all at once. The local mayor, conservative Partido Popular member Carlos Simarro, told a local Spanish daily that Soller is a “modern town” and that the locals are delighted about the news. The couple found two surrogate mothers in Thailand who are now both in the fifth month of pregnancy and both are going smoothly. Each of the women was inseminated by one of the men, and a third, Caucasian, woman, provided the eggs. As surrogate mothers are not allowed in Spain, the couple fears that they may have some problems, especially if their case receives too much attention from the media. They got married in October and wanted a large family.

ALLOWEEN is traditionally the most fearful of days: some of the costumes available in the shops should probably be rated 18 years or older and if your house is on the trick-or-treat circuit, there is always the ultimate fear that the visitor will deliver an unwanted trick, unsatisfied with the sweet offerings. Or worse, it may be an opportunistic tax inspector lurking in your neighbourhood. One segment of society, however, is surely beating the voodoo drum of joy at this increasingly popular tradition: the retailers. Last year in the US, Halloween expenditure amounted to a record $8 billion (€5.8 billion), while Brits spirited away some £300 million (€351 million) on all things orange and ghoulish, up from a mere £12 million (€14.06 million) only a decade ago, according to The Independent. But if Halloween, or ‘La noche de brujas’ as some call it here, is not your cup of witches’ brew, you should not lay the blame solely on the Americans, who have admittedly assimilated this season with such gusto and finesse.

Look no further than our forefathers from Scotland and Ireland who brought this predominantly Celtic tradition to the US centuries ago. It was not until the 1930’s, however, that the ‘trick or treat’ term was coined in relation to ritualised begging on Halloween and it did not become the ‘wholesome’ family pursuit it is seen as today until much later, only reaching most of Europe in the late 20th Century. Personally I am surprised it took so long; what with the immense money-making opportunity and our seeming fascination with all things occult, scary and morbid. In the US, Halloween lags only Christmas in

financial terms and accounts for a quarter of all sweets sold during the year. Yet come November 1, sugar highs have to be curtailed and any festivity-lag buried to head off to work or school. Not so in Spain - and much of Europe where All Saints Day is observed;

a day to visit the graves of family members, departed from this world. Halloween is also about the notion of life and death, yin and yang, or good versus evil something all humans tend to dwell on, regardless of religion,

race or background. So like it or not, this rather recent tradition is likely to go from strength to strength. If you still haven't the inclination or nerve to participate in these eerie festivities, may I recommend locking the doors, closing the curtains and turning off the lights to instead enjoy a good movie by candlelight. Some of my all-time favourites, for this particular occasion are The Blair Witch Project, Final Destination (there are four sequels, too, in case sleep eludes you) and The Sixth Sense. None are suitable for the kids, but then they will probably be out trick or treating with their friends. If this level of entertainment is not scary enough for you, then may I suggest opening a recent letter from the Hacienda or the Inland Revenue - an experience sure to send goosebumps down the spine of every living human being. Just remember not to open the door, should someone call...

NUMBER of amusing statements have been attributed to Winston Churchill. These have earned him applause but the handclapping is often undeserved. It was old when WC Fields used the jibe in the 1930s movie It’s a Gift. This one-liner has been around for 130 years. Lord Sandwich spoke plainly when he addressed the editor of The North Briton. “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of the pox.” The journalist swiftly replied. “That depends, sir, on whether I embrace your politics or your mistress.” This exchange has wrongly been attributed to Gladstone and Disraeli. Breast implants may help sex life HAVING a breast augmentation or implants could alter a woman’s sex life for the better. According to a new study in Brazil, women who had cosmetic surgery to enhance their breast size experienced a significant increase in arousal and satisfaction following the procedure, HealthDay News reported. However, the researchers also found that women who had stretch marks after getting breast implants did not experience the same improvement in their sex lives. The study included 45

women who were planning on undergoing breast augmentation. Before the surgery, Dr Paulo Guimaros and his colleagues gave the women a questionnaire to assess the quality of their sex lives and sexual satisfaction. The women took the same questionnaire two, four and 18 months after the operation. Of the 36 women who did not develop stretch marks after the surgery, all reported improved levels of arousal and more satisfaction with their sexual experiences, according to HealthDay News.

Better times ahead... or not? THE good news keeps on coming. The Spanish economy has finally come out of recession. After 27 months of contraction the third quarter of the year saw growth in the economy. Tourism figures for Spain are up, with many regions recording record levels of visitors.

Our reporters went out onto the street and asked: ‘Is the feel-good factor coming back to Spain?’ BOB COWAN and Sandy Tucker, who live in Partaloa and are both retired, remain downbeat about the economy. “There is not a feel-good factor in our opinion.The demolition of the houses in Cantoria is a big blow. (Editor’s note: Two ‘illegal’ homes in the town owned by expatriates were demolished. Hundreds of other cases are unresolved.) “Spain needs to get things in order. People want to pay their bills like IBI but are not able to. People have lost their savings investing in Spain. The cost of living is much higher now even on basic things like vegetables.” Johnny Slade, a DJ living in Arboleas, agreed. He said: “The Spanish Government can’t see in front of its nose. o you use Twitter? It’s the social network which is growing the fastest at the moment, and more and more people in Mallorca are using it. If you use Twitter you are a Tweep (not a Tw@t as someone suggested to me the other day) and we are collectively Tweeple. There are regular weekly Twitter events to get involved with and it’s the best place to get breaking news these days. I guess we have our Facebook obsession to contend with, but really get yourself on to Twitter and find out what all the fuss is about. That is exactly what Marta Bonet and Roger Swain did a few years ago when they ran a finca hotel in Campos and needed to find a way to promote it on a marketing budget of exactly zero. Marta set up a Twitter account, but not as herself or as the hotel, but as Pepper, their donkey. That burro went on to have a very busy online life publishing her ‘brays’ about life on the finca, and Marta found herself as the new poster girl for social media marketing, she’s even been on national talk shows telling Spain about her experiences.

TWITTER: Social network site is growing fastest. Marta and Roger now run their own business called Rebuzzna (that’s Spanish for ‘bray,’ of course) and they teach social media courses at Parc Bit which is Mallorca’s version of Silicon Valley.

Try searching #Mallorca on Twitter and you will find people talking about it: just like that. It’s like inviting yourself to a brand new cocktail party where everyone likes the same thing. ‘Rubbish’ restaurant opens in Copenhagen A NEW restaurant has taken the phrase ‘waste not, want not’ to new levels as it offers customers a menu made entirely from waste food. Rub and Stub in Copenhagen (Denmark) creates dishes using food which supermarkets and farmers would usually throw away. The menu changes daily and is dependent upon what surplus food has been donated that day. It is a non-profit venture, run and operated entirely by volunteers, and caters for 60 guests every evening.

Starbucks trendy tea STARBUCKS is starting a new venture to make tea the next big trend in hot drinks, and has opened its first ‘tea bar’ in New York City. The world renowned Seattle-based company says its new franchise will be known as the Teavana Tea Bar and will promote a healthy environment to enjoy its selection of Teavana Fine Teas, with unique blends including Spiced Mandarin Oolong tea, a Pineaple Kona Pop or Blueberry Bliss iced tea. The Tea Bars will also serve small plates of healthy option food including flatbreads and salads. Starbucks opened a similar tea shop last year near its headquarters under its Tazo brand and the company has said that

next month, it will also be converted into a Teavana Tea Bar. Starbucks bought the

Teavana chain of about 300 tea shops last year, primarily in shopping malls.

READER emailed the other day asking whether it was possible to grow and harvest tomatoes all the year round. My answer was that it is possible provided you protect them from chilly nights and days during the late autumn and winter. They should be potted up in a rich compound, always kept damp, fed

you then switch to a potassium high feed. Protection can be placing the potted tomato plants in a cool or heated greenhouse depending on whether you are in a frost-free zone or not. A shelf of a utility room or garage will do as well, or in front of a

terraces as easily as in a garden. These instructions may seem detailed, but they need to be for success. They are relatively easy in practice and the effort is well worth the bother. The benefits are not only that you have the satisfaction of harvesting all the year round, but also that you can grow them without using chemical insecticides and fungicides and that you can harvest only when the tomatoes are fully ripe and tasty. The latter is important in preparing all dishes requiring tomatoes as illustrated (above) with a photo of one of the dishes I most enjoy preparing and eating. In respect of protecting plants from insects and fungi, we suggest you spray lightly once a month with a 3 per cent neem oil solution and dust lightly monthly with natural sulphur powder if problems start to occur. During the colder months you may get away with no treatments. Earlier I recommended that a fertile compost be used. This can be achieved by adding 20 per cent of worm

The latter, Estiercol puro de oveja, is often available in 30-kilo sacks costing around €5 or less. Incidentally there was a good description of contents on the back of the sack. This included phosphorus 3.3 per cent, potassium 3 per cent, nitrogen 3 per cent, iron 3 per cent, trace minerals and vitamins, plus beneficial microorganisms. It also claims to be free of the seeds of weeds. Happy tomato times!

T’S the silly season - you know, the time of year when Government party leaders disappear on their summer hols and the papers are plastered with silly stories - still with us and merging with Halloween? Especially about health scares and end-ofthe-world scenarios. For instance, earlier this month, astronomers at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in the Ukraine discovered an asteroid that doomsday headlines warn could hit the Earth in 2032. Well, could it hurry up a bit: Bruce Willis mightn’t be around any more to save us come 2032. Meanwhile, should we await Government advice about the importance of sheltering under a sturdy dining room table with a warm, fleecy blanket, a torch, a bottle of mineral water and checking our life insurance policies?

Now, calm down, people! Realistically, the asteroid has a 99.998 per cent chance of missing Earth. We should be more concerned about what’s happening to the environment and the potential depletion of

the world’s natural resources. Mankind’s the biggest threat to life on Earth. The other misleading headline concerned ‘research’ conducted at Glasgow University into the dietary risk factors of having a stroke from eating deep-fried Mars bars. Result of this ‘research’: findings below the normal scientific threshold for statistical significance. In other words, pointless.

Next week Glasgow University gets a £5 million (€5.86 million) government grant to figure out if water is wet. After that, a study of Scotland’s other favourite tipple: Sanatogen tonic wine. Followed by a major project to pin down the date of Easter. Which makes me wonder if all these health stories that are regularly trotted out aren’t belated April Fool jokes. Hardly a week goes by without the latest revelation that this or that is good/bad for us - take your pick. You know what I mean. Red wine is good for us - full of polyphenols and stuff - but only if we drink one unit a day. Or was it five or six... Maybe science reporters are getting hard pressed to come up with eye-catching headlines. One thing’s for sure, though. Health stories are getting more and more weird. Fact: short, dark-haired women are more likely to develop early menopause. I made this last bit up but you get the drift. Deep-fried cheesecake, anyone? bar that ensures safety. The visual division of the rear bumpers from the car body is a reference from the manufacturer to the world of racing cars and optimises the aerodynamic flow. An adjustable wing has been put at the rear of the car to ensure optimum airflow when

interacting with the rear diffuser. The lightweight design of the Veneno Roadster shows on the scales. With a dry weight of 1,490 kilograms, the car benefits from a power-to-weight ratio of 1.99kg/hp. The sports car is driven by a 12cylinder engine with a displacement of 6.5 litres and is equipped with the fast-shifting ISR transmission with five modes, permanent all-wheel drive and a racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/damper units. With a maximum output of 552 kW/750hp, the Veneno Roadster accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 2.9

seconds and top speed stands at 355km/h. The interior of the Veneno Roadster is dominated by carbon fibre in order to reduce the weight of the vehicle. The carbon fibre monocoque is visible inside the car around the central tunnel and the sills. The two lightweight bucket seats are made from Lamborghini’s patented forged composite. The woven carbonfibre is used to clad the entire cockpit, part of the seats and the headliner.

Electric car manufacturer set for entry into Spanish market TESLA MOTORS will arrive in the Spanish market next year. The electric car manufacturer will open its first official sales point in Spain during the first half of 2014. Madrid has been the location chosen by Tesla to embark on its entry into the Spanish market, opening a sales point which will be directly managed by them. The California-based

company has not discounted the possibility of opening another sales point in the country. According to the company’s Communications Director for Southern Europe, Roberto Toro, Tesla entering the Spanish market is proof of how important this market is for the manufacturer. Apart from selling electric cars, Tesla will focus on the installation

of so-called ‘superchargers’. These charging stations, reportedly the fastest in the world, can provide half a car battery charge in 20 minutes and a full charge in 75 minutes. The company aims at installing these superchargers near amenities like roadside restaurants, cafés and shopping centres. The idea is to allow Tesla car users to drive

from charging station to charging station with only 80 per cent of the car battery. The American manufacturer also has big plans for the rest of the European market. Tesla expects 40 per cent of its worldwide sales to come from Europe, where the company plans to open at least 12 official sales points in a period of 18 months.
