Metal theft A ROUTINE police patrol caught two Spaniards in the Los Beatos Industrial Estate, Cartagena, who were allegedly stealing metal items to sell as scrap.

Big-spending Brits Foreign tourists give €579m September boost INTERNATIONAL tourist spending increased by 9.4 per cent in September in the Valencian Community to reach €579 million. According to the Egatur tourist expenditure survey conducted by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, in the first nine months of the year spending reached €47 billion in the country, an increase of 7.3 per cent over the same period in 2012. Average daily spending through September rose by 2.2 per cent to €108, with British tourists spending the most; 20.7 per cent of the total, followed by German tourists, up 4 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Finance NO TO LANDFILL: Update meeting announces plans to take fight to Brussels.

Landfill protests sent to Europe

THE fight against the proposed landfill site in Albatera is headed for the European Parliament. Leaders of the association ‘Albatera, No al Vertedero’ made the announcement in front of hundreds of supporters at their latest meeting in the town’s Casa de Cultura. Representatives will travel to Brussels on December 4-6 to meet the European Parliament and put forward their case and objections to the plans for the dump. They will present a report which advises against the installation and asks for the enforcement of the law on

solid waste treatment. Before heading to Brussels, two further protests have been planned. The first takes place next Saturday when buses will take residents to Murcia to express their rejection across the province’s border. On Monday, November 1, another protest will be held in Valencia outside the gates of the Regional Ministry of Environment. There protestors will ask the regional councillors responsible for the environment and environmental quality to meet their requests regarding the landfill.

Brussels Airlines launch new winter flights BRUSSELS AIRLINES have launched a new service between Alicante-Elche Airport and the Belgian capital, Brussels. The service will have two

weekly (Wednesday and Saturday) flights and will operate throughout the winter season using an Airbus 319 with a capacity for 141 passengers. The move will allow the

company to link Alicante with its hub at Brussels Airport, enabling passengers to catch connecting flights to Africa, New York JFK and Washington Dulles airports.

The airline has scheduled for this winter season, which ends on March 28, 2014, 44 flights out and as many arrivals, offering more than 12,000 seats.

HILE Halloween has ballooned into a massive worldwide event, in Spain the more traditional celebrations fall on All Saints’ Day. November 1 is a national holiday and queues form at cemeteries as families remember the dead. Families buy flowers, visit the tombs of deceased relatives and spend the night praying for them. Sweetmeats known as ‘Saints’ Bones’ are made with marzipan filled with egg yolk. They are shaped in the form of a bone and can be found in most cake shops, along with ‘buñuelos’ which are fried dough balls with sweet toppings. Celebrating Halloween has become popular in Spain in recent years, with many stores selling foodstuffs and decorations, and schools holding costume parties. Some TV channels show horror films or Halloween Buñuelos and pumpkins

Police injured in drugs raid NINE residents of Jumilla, Murcia, have been arrested accused of being members of a drugs network. Two Guardia Civil officers were injured during the arrests following resistance by the alleged leaders of the

gang. Police launched the investigation into the pursuit of drug trafficking in May. They seized 38,000 doses of marihuana, 212 of hashish along with €4,000 in cash, computer equipment, a van and three cars.

Brakes fail on bus AN investigation is under way after a number of people were injured whilst travelling on a bus travelling from Murcia to Cehegín. The accident occurred when the driver realised the brakes had failed. He steered it across a roundabout and onto a motorway service road, heading uphill towards Caravaca de la Cruz allowing it to decelerate naturally before it hit the safety barrier and overturned. There were 25 people on board. Seven people were hurt, one seriously.

Cartagena divers destroy war mine DIVERS from Cartagena have destroyed a mine off the coast of Girona. It had lain undiscovered just 200 metres from the shoreline and was spotted by a recreational diver. A specialist diving team identified the object as a German mine which was still

Airport workers seek job security WORKERS at San Javier Airport are demanding that their jobs be guaranteed. They say there is much confusion over the new Corvera Airport and want promises from Murcia’s Regional President Ramon Luis Valcarcel that their jobs are safe. Protesting AENA staff and employees of companies holding concessions at San Javier, whose contracts will be in doubt if the airport does close, staged a protest, with unions requesting a meeting with Valcarcel. Daniel Bueno from the CCOO union said workers are not interested in Valcarcel’s ‘grand dreams’ for Corvera, simply wanting to “earn a living and put food on the table.”

Health spend to increase SPENDING on health in the Valencia Region is to rise by 8.8 per cent. The Government Budget for 2014 has been approved, amounting to €17.088 million for Valencia, which is an overall increase of 5.6 per cent over 2013. Giving details of the budget, the Treasury was keen to stress that the budget increase is concentrated on health, education and welfare.

A WOMAN has been arrested in Elda accused of selling drugs and using her children to keep a look-out for police. The 34-year-old was using the youngsters to watch for police as she sold cocaine from her home in the town. Police believed the ‘small scale’ operation was selling drugs to local residents. Officers found €1,215, a fake gun and various tools for the preparation and sale of drugs at the property.

Former mayor loses appeal as jail sentence is upheld TORREVIEJA’S former mayor, Pedro Hernandez Mateo, has lost the appeal against his conviction relating to the awarding of a contract for garbage collection in 2004. The PP mayor was jailed for three years for awarding the €97.8-million contract to a ‘preferred’ company rather than putting it out to tender correctly. He was found guilty by the High Court of Valencia in November 2012 and now, following his appeal, the Supreme Court has upheld the sentence. However, despite the court’s insistence on a prison term, Hernandez Mateo may avoid jail as the PP Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, has the power to pardon him, although that would cause a political storm. His ill health and age could also mean he walks free as under Spanish law there are cases for leniency.

NEWS The most transplants ELCHE’S General Hospital leads the ranking of organ donations in the Valencia Community so far this year. Carrying out more transplants than Alicante’s General Hospital and La Fe in Valencia, which in 2012 was in first place, Elche has so far carried out 43 kidney, 23 liver, six lung, three heart and a pancreas transplant. Five per cent of relatives of deceased patients eligible to donate organs, refused permission, below the national average which stands at 15 per cent. Regional Director of the Health Department Manuel Escolano recognised the value, solidarity and generosity of donors and their families, adding that 25 per cent of donations came from immigrants.

Agreement reached on palm-tree grove ORIHUELA and the University Miguel Hernandez (UMH) have signed an agreement to plant a collection of palm trees in the Grove 1-6 area. The city will plant more than 2,000 Phoenix palms whilst UMH will provide the material required to run the plantation and will oversee the conservation of the palms. The area will also be used for academic studies by UMH and other institutions as part of a five-year agreement.

Vueling seats take off VUELING has increased the number of seats from Alicante-Elche Airport by 49 per cent this winter. The low-cost carrier already has connections from Alicante to Barcelona, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Palma, Moscow and Paris, and now includes flights to Bilbao and Oran.

More policing for port call HOTELIERS are calling for more policing in the leisure area of Alicante’s port. The Provincial Hotel Association has called on the city council to adopt the necessary measures to ensure compliance with the regulations concerning noise and closing time of establishments. They want to ensure that their customers get their rest and to preserve the image of the city for tourism. Earlier this year Local Police carried out more noise inspections, with 200 denuncias

being handed out. The association wants the campaign to continue. President of the association, Cristina Rodes, said: “We only ask that each facility meets the law regarding schedules according to whether they are a licensed bar or nightclub, and also in terms of noise isolation facilities such as double doors.” There has also been an increase in the number of complaints from residents in the Old Town part of the city who report excessive noise from local pubs.

Escobar is laid to rest HUNDREDS of people said goodbye to singer Manolo Escobar in Benidorm, most famous for his hit ‘y Viva España’. A chapel of rest was installed in the city following the death of the 82-yearold, who passed away at his home in Benidorm. He had been battling cancer for more than two years. Originally from El Elegido in Almería, he was the fifth of a family of 10 brothers. He formed the band ‘Manolo Escobar and his guitars’ with four of his brothers. Escobar rose to fame and travelled around the world to promote his music, recording over 80 albums and trying his hand at acting. Benidorm granted him the Gold Medal of the city.

Firefighters go underwater ALICANTE firefighters can now undertake sea rescues thanks to the latest technology. They have brought in sophisticated equipment which consists of a mask with wireless headphone and microphone. A radio transmitter allows divers to communicate with each other underwater and ground staff, giving them freedom of movement.

Fire service bosses have said it will help improve the search and rescue work, especially in low visibility waters. It is just some of the new diving equipment acquired for the City Council and Fire Prevention Service. The fire service has 24 divers who work throughout the year monitoring the sea and lakes.

A&E closure ‘justified’ THE man now in charge of Murcia’s Regional Health Area Number Two, Tomas Murcia, has taken up his post following the resignation of Jaime Guirao. Speaking about the closure of the A&E Department at Cartagena’s Rosell Hospital, he said it was “not a closure, but a transfer” of the services to the

nearby Santa Lucia Hospital, which is a “magnificent” service able to cater for all patients. The Regional Health Department continues to maintain that efficient management and quality services will be guaranteed but public demonstrations continue against the Rosell closure, job losses and growing waiting lists.

The day is intended for those who want to develop a business and is targeted for entrepreneurs, selfemployed, small and medium sized enterprises and students. To fully support the needs in the third world the Alicante centre has to process around 70,000 pairs of spectacles every year so the efforts of the Torrevieja Lions are greatly appreciated. Male voice choir enchants Alfas THE Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir have just completed their very first tour journeying from their home base at La Zenia to Albir in the northern part of the Costa Blanca. This choir which has only been in existence for 18 months demonstrated to people north of Alicante just how professional they are. The short tour was organised and co-ordinated by Pamela Dawson Tasker of the Asociacion Espanola Contra el Cancer (AECC) to raise much needed funds for this important and worthwhile charity.

Timeless for Alzheimer’s THE ladies boutique ‘Timeless Fashions’ put on their very popular fashion show, this time for the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association (AFA). Simon Morton from Sunshine FM was the DJ for the afternoon with Nick Gold making the entertainment complete by singing his and the audiences’ favourite songs.

All gave their time and talent free in support of the Alzheimer’s Association and ‘Timeless Fashions.’ Some wonderful models showed us new fashions for the autumn and coming winter, including Jennie Mutter, the Fund Raising Executive from AFA. Members of the Alzheimer’s Association fundraising team (Ros.

Rosemary, Christine and Judy) sold raffle tickets, which included vouchers from many of the businesses and restaurants in Shopping Centre Punta Marina, Punta Prima, the venue for the show. The raffle raised €432 plus a further €250 from the collection tins. A huge thank you to everyone who helped.

SIERRA HELADA: Following in look-outs’ footsteps.

Sierra walk retraces history through its national park THE Sierra Helada national park not only separates Benidorm and Alfaz’s Albir, but unites them, too. Both local councils have joined forces to promote and protect the national park while introducing it to visitors and local residents through a series of conducted tours. The first followed the Ruta de los Atajadores, the trail taken centuries ago by sentinels who patrolled the crest of Sierra Helada between the Bombarda and Caletes towers in Albir and Benidorm. Their task was to give early warning of pirates, foes and invaders approaching from the Sierra’s blind side. All this and more was explained by staff from the culture departments of both councils. As well as its history, they also pointed out the fossilised dunes and plants that are unique to the Sierra. Given the terrain covered, it is hardly surprising that the Atajadores route was classed as ‘difficult’ but others that follow in November and December will be less demanding. WE’RE all different, us humans, that’s what makes us unique. So obviously, when it comes to applying for a job, we have our own way of going about writing a CV or prepping for an interview. And according to the confessions of a recruitment consultant, who wishes to remain anonymous, some jobseekers are a bit quirkier than others. For example, if you didn’t get a call back for a job it could have been the questionable photo attached to your CV that let you down. According to our recruitment source, some jobseekers just don’t seem to realise that an application for a job isn’t the same posting on a

Facebook page. Rather than the professional head and shoulders shot normally required, apparently recruitment agencies spend half their day bent over in laughter looking at the ridiculous pictures jobseekers send in. Like what? Well, how about a CV, where the first page is an A4 size photo of a woman wearing little hot pants and reclining on a tree. Or another classic mistake

that is - a photo on a CV of a girl wearing a Santa hat, who is clearly inebriated at a party. Recruitment agencies even get sent family photos where the jobseeker writes something like: “I’m the one in the blue shirt.” Some people have been known to send entire cover letters in capital letters too, while others write CVs in Romanesque-style fonts that look like calligraphy, or use

fluorescent colours. “No, no, no,” say recruitment experts. When it comes to CV writing the more normal and classic the style the better. And it doesn’t massively matter if your CV is longer than two pages as long as it contains interesting content, spelt correctly. Although the trend at the moment among many young graduate CVs is to send one page with really small font, which some recruitment experts like. And finally, nowadays with the internet everything moves at a fast pace, so as a jobseeker there is no time to be sitting around twiddling fingers. New jobs arriving to recruitment agencies are apparently posted online almost instantly, and recruiters begin to receive CVs within seconds. These CVs are sent on to the client within one or two hours, so it’s vital to be fast if you want to be interviewed.

THE eurozone’s biggest bank, Santander, has posted a big rise in profits as it put aside less money to cover bad debt in Spain. Time for a rethink on sex trade HARDLY a week goes by without another report of women being ‘freed’ having been forced to work as prostitutes. Whilst I am sure this is a problem in many countries, surely the ‘turn a blind eye’ attitude many people in Spain seem to have to prostitution is one of the main causes of the abuse of these women. The way forward is to tightly control the ‘trade’. At the moment it seems to exist in a legal grey area, with rules differing from place to place. Prostitution should be expressly permitted in law, but only by licensed operators in licensed premises, subject to inspection and control by the police and health authorities. Coupled with a total ban on street prostitution, it would go a long way to solving the problems of criminal gangs intimidating women into becoming ‘sex slaves’. Anthony Jones, Mazarron (Alicante)

Take notice IT’S amazing how the accumulation of rubbish in the streets has woken the coastal residents up to the fact that they are always short-changed by the administration in Orihuela. The minority government is struggling to make the money go round, and we on the coast are the losers. They are spending the money on projects in Orihuela and the surrounding villages in the hope that they will get reelected. There is no need for the government to take the coast into consideration, as we have no representation. That is in part the fault of residents not bothering to vote in the local elections, and the Press not even bothering to have someone present when the plenary meetings are being held. Bloomin’ disaster RE ‘Red tide disaster’ (Axarquia, Issue 1477) where fishing boats have had to remain tied up for months as the shellfish beds have been closed due to an algal ‘bloom’. This is the inevitable consequence of pollution. Nitrates from fertilisers plus sewage swept to sea feed the algae. Combined with warmer temperatures, these toxic

blooms will become more and more common, causing huge economic loss to the fishing industry and untold damage to the environment. It is in the best interests of everyone to have stricter controls of what we put into the environment. Mankind cannot continue to poison the land and sea with impunity forever more. Trade issues PERHAPS someone could explain why the world’s major manufacturing industries are concentrated in China, leaving the European workforce depleted of work opportunities. There appears to be a considerable number of contradictory, two-faced UK and European politicians who are quite willing to carbon tax our own homegrown industries into oblivion, but yet trade heavily with countries which pollute not only themselves but also the world. Britons first IN 1993, I went to Egypt, stayed at a hotel near Aswan. We chatted with Betani, a lovely Egyptian lad. He had not heard of Elvis or The Beatles, but he did say that he wanted to marry a nice English girl because “I can live in England and the Government will give me money!” It is no wonder the hardworking people of the UK are angry. Another occasion a guy in Calais, France, had been caught trying to enter the UK. The customs officer said: “Why don’t you stay in France?” He replied: “No, I want to go to England because I will be given money.” The UK has been a global joke for many years with respect to its benefits system. Their problem I READ the letter by D Blanchette (Issue 1476) about overpopulation in Third World countries and wondered how the women even get pregnant and carry through to birth if they are so emaciated. Anorexia usually stops a woman from having periods and therefore pregnancy. It takes two non-starved people to create a pregnancy. So are we being conned? Not comparing like with like... LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

DON’T often follow up on mail I receive, mainly because I think you can get too bogged down with a single subject. Frankly, with a short blurb such as mine, there simply isn’t enough space for such columnist luxury. I will, however, make an exception with regard to last week’s published missive, which likened the British expat community in Spain to the immigrants now threatening to swamp the UK. I agree many of the British are inclined to stick to their own, both socially and abodewise. It is, I suppose a tribal and comfort zone situation, and in many cases (not mine, I hasten to add) perfectly understandable. But there are one or two glaring differences. We don’t strut around with posters insulting and indeed openly threatening our Spanish hosts. We don’t try to change their customs and laws and we don’t insist that Spanish women should be classed as second-class citizens and clad in shrouds. In fact, as another correspondent observed, apart from the concerns now being raised by their ever increasing illegal numbers, the British had no

BRITS IN SPAIN: Not like immigrants in UK. particular trouble encompassing the West Indian and Asian immigrants, many of whom have integrated and brought a very welcome diversity to us notoriously staid Brits. It is only since the influx of the Muslim extremists that all the real troubles have reared up. It is a large section of the Islamic followers who have caused most of the unrest and bitterness. A situation that is now finally

being openly discussed by disgruntled British inhabitants and indeed many politicians. If a whole section of people from another religion and culture make every effort to disrupt and change the society that has taken them in, who can blame its locals for getting annoyed? You can’t really get more ungrateful than that! To compare British expats to these people is not only ridiculous, but to my mind also quite insulting. I think most of us are extremely grateful that we can live freely in the sunshine with our colourful and generally laid-back hosts. OK, so perhaps many could make more effort with the language, and I agree there are those who moan too much. Mind you, these are mainly people that moan about just about anything anyway! But heaven forbid we should try and change their culture, religion or laws. If I personally didn’t agree with the way our hosts lived, I would simply ‘up the roots’ and move to a country I did find ‘acceptable’. It’s a pity the same decision is not being made by many of those who are not satisfied with the British culture and way of life! As a final note I couldn’t make head nor tail of last week’s missive likening me to Sean Connery. Was it complimentary or insulting? Don’t ask me, I only scribble here!

They would highlight the real criminals, those people who gambled in the banking institutions. UK Taxman Targets Rental Income s tax authorities everywhere look to increase tax revenue, rental income is coming under closer scrutiny. If you own and rent out property, whether in Spain, the UK or elsewhere, you need to be sure that you are paying tax correctly. It is quite easy to make mistakes, especially if the property is located in one country and you are resident in another. In the UK, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) calculates that it loses up to £500 million a year from underpaid tax on rental income. It has launched a ‘Let Property Campaign’ to encourage landlords to regularise their position, whether they have made genuine errors or deliberately not declared income. It is open to UK resident landlords and covers holiday lettings, including properties owned abroad in countries like Spain. A press release from HMRC warned: “HMRC will use information it holds about property rental in the UK and abroad, along

For those that fail to come forward, higher penalties - or even criminal prosecution - could follow.” With increasing exchange of information between countries, you can expect the UK authorities to find out about Spain property and vice versa. Where necessary, the UK and Spanish tax

authorities can help each other collect tax. What are your tax obligations if you are a UK resident owning property in Spain? If you own property in Spain but are a UK resident, you need to comply with both the UK and Spanish regulations. As a UK taxpayer, you need to declare the rent on your annual UK tax return. Expenses can be deducted. Any gains on sale need to be declared and taxed in the UK. Overseas property must also be declared as part of your estate for UK inheritance tax purposes. Here in Spain, rental income from the property owned by nonresidents is taxed at 24.75% (on net income after allowable expenses for EU residents). If you do not rent out the property, or when it is unlet, a notional income is deemed to arise and tax is due on this. When you sell the property you

will pay tax on the capital gain under the savings income regime, at rates of between 21% and 27%. The net equity value of the property is currently liable to wealth tax if valued at over the individual allowance of €700,000 for individuals and €1,400,000 for couples owning in joint names. A mortgage can reduce its taxable value. The property will be subject to succession tax, which can be expensive for non-residents. Spain and the UK apply their own tax rules so the taxable amount is different in each country. You do not however have to pay tax twice. You can offset the Spanish tax paid against the UK liability to avoid double taxation. If the UK tax is higher, further tax will be due in the UK. If the UK tax is lower, you do not get a refund for the difference. This article looks at Spanish

rental income and gains for UK residents, but you will have similar tax considerations if you are resident in Spain and own UK property. It can be hard enough getting tax planning right in one country; getting it right when it involves two countries is even more complicated. ALLOWEEN is traditionally the most fearful of days. Some of the costumes available in the shops should probably be rated 18 years or older and if your house is on the trick-or-treat circuit, there is always the ultimate fear that the visitor will deliver an unwanted trick, unsatisfied with the sweet offerings. Or worse, it may be an opportunistic tax inspector lurking in your neighbourhood. One segment of society, however, is surely beating the voodoo drum of joy at this increasingly popular tradition: the retailers. Last year in the US, Halloween expenditure amounted to a record $8 billion (€5.8 billion), while Brits spirited away some £300 million (€351 million) on all things orange and ghoulish, up from a mere £12 million (€14.06 million) only a decade ago, according to The Independent. But if Halloween, or ‘La noche de brujas’ as some call it here, is not your cup of witches’ brew, you should not lay the blame solely on the Americans, who have admittedly assimilated this season with such gusto and finesse.

Look no further than our forefathers from Scotland and Ireland who brought this predominantly Celtic tradition to the US centuries ago. It was not until the 1930s, however, that the ‘trick-or-treat’ term was coined in relation to ritualised begging on Halloween. And it did not become the ‘wholesome’ family pursuit it is seen as today until much later, only reaching most of Europe in the late 20th century. Personally, I am surprised it took so long; what with the immense money-making opportunity and our seeming fascination with all things occult, scary and morbid. In the US, Halloween lags only Christmas in

financial terms and accounts for a quarter of all sweets sold during the year. Yet come November 1, sugar highs have to be curtailed and any festivity-lag buried to head off to work or school. Not so in Spain - and much of Europe where All Saints’ Day is observed;

a day to visit the graves of family members, departed from this world. Halloween is also about the notion of life and death, yin and yang, or good versus evil something all humans tend to dwell on, regardless of religion,

race or background. So like it or not, this rather recent tradition is likely to go from strength to strength. If you still haven't the inclination or nerve to participate in these eerie festivities, may I recommend locking the doors, closing the curtains and turning off the lights to instead enjoy a good movie by candlelight. Some of my all-time favourites, for this particular occasion are The Blair Witch Project, Final Destination (there are four sequels, too, in case sleep eludes you) and The Sixth Sense. None are suitable for the kids, but then they will probably be out trick-ortreating with their friends. If this level of entertainment is not scary enough for you, then may I suggest opening a recent letter from the Hacienda or the Inland Revenue - an experience sure to send goosebumps down the spine of every living human being. Just remember not to open the door, should someone call...

NUMBER of amusing statements have been attributed to Winston Churchill. These have earned him applause but the handclapping is often undeserved. When confronted by Bessie Braddock MP who admonished the wartime leader for being drunk he replied, “and you are ugly but I will be sober in the morning and you will still be ugly.” Churchill was copying an English quip of some lineage. It was old when WC Fields used the jibe in the 1930s movie It’s a Gift. This one-liner has been around for 130 years. T’S the silly season - you know, the time of year when Government party leaders disappear on their summer hols and the papers are plastered with silly stories - still with us and merging with Halloween? Especially about health scares and end-ofthe-world scenarios. For instance, earlier this month, astronomers at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in the Ukraine discovered an asteroid that doomsday headlines warn could hit the Earth in 2032. Well, could it hurry up a bit: Bruce Willis mightn’t be around any more to save us come 2032. Meanwhile, should we await Government advice about the importance of sheltering under a sturdy dining room table with a warm, fleecy blanket, a torch, a bottle of mineral water and checking our life insurance policies?

Now, calm down, people! Realistically, the asteroid has a 99.998 per cent chance of missing Earth. We should be more concerned about what’s happening to the environment and the potential depletion of

the world’s natural resources. Mankind’s the biggest threat to life on Earth. The other misleading headline concerned ‘research’ conducted at Glasgow University into the dietary risk factors of having a stroke from eating deep-fried Mars bars. Result of this ‘research’: findings below the normal scientific threshold for statistical significance. In other words, pointless. Next week Glasgow University gets a £5

million (€5.86 million) government grant to figure out if water is wet. After that, a study of Scotland’s other favourite tipple: Sanatogen tonic wine. Followed by a major project to pin down the date of Easter. Which makes me wonder if all these health stories that are regularly trotted out aren’t belated April Fool jokes. Hardly a week goes by without the latest revelation that this or that is good/bad for us - take your pick. You know what I mean. Red wine is good for us - full of polyphenols and stuff - but only if we drink one unit a day. Or was it five or six... Maybe science reporters are getting hard pressed to come up with eye-catching headlines. One thing’s for sure though. Health stories are getting more and more weird. Fact: short, dark-haired women are more likely to develop early menopause. I made this last bit up but you get the drift. Deep-fried cheesecake, anyone? ICK CLEGG is not everyone’s favourite, even - or particularly amongst Lib-Dems. Joking apart, his remark that “Parents don’t want ideology to get in the way of their children’s education” will raise a hollow laugh in Spain. Education minister Jose Ignacio Wert’s ideology is now stamped all over the Spanish system, but in one respect he cannot be faulted. Students must obtain at least 5.5 in access exams to obtain a university grant although the cut-off mark is 5. This is patently unfair, say Wert’s critics, but the unloved minister pointed out that grants are not loans but funded by the taxpayer. “A greater effort is asked,” he claimed. There are many motives for criticising Wert but they should not include his policies on grants.

CLEGG: Not everyone’s favourite.

Strasbourg steps in TO the Spanish government’s intense frustration, the Strasbourg court of Human Rights has backed ETA terrorist Ines del Rio. Del Rio was already in prison when remission through work was removed from Spain’s Penal Code in 1995.

Responsible for 23 deaths, she received a 3,823-year prison term but under existing Spanish law would serve only 30 years. With remission she should have left prison in 2008. Instead, the authorities applied the same formula used with Etarra Henri Parot in 2006, deducting good behaviour allowances from each count and not the 30-year maximum. Applying the Parot Doctrine retrospectively is illegal, Strasbourg has said. Initially this ruling affects only Ines del Rio, although other Etarras will walk free. But they and Del Rio return to a different Spain from the one they left - one where there is no place for ETA which declared a permanent ceasefire two years ago. Furthermore, critics forget the Parot Doctrine still applies to Etarras or anyone else with sentences imposed after 1995.

Number One is first DOLORES DE COSPEDAL, secretary general of the national PP party, brought a lawsuit against the party’s ex-treasurer, Luis Barcenas. She was defending “her personal

honour” following his allegations of illegal funding and salary top-ups. Barcenas attended the hearing via video link as he is on remand for fraud and money-laundering. Unrepentantly contradicting De Cospedal he told the court he personally had handed her envelopes of black money. The party’s groan was audible all over Spain. Everyone had stopped talking about Barcenas and De Cospedal has stirred things up again. She gives the strong impression she is out to look after herself. This is common amongst politicians but usually they make a better job of concealing it.

Only here for beer WITH little money around and European elections looming, politicians fear they will not be sufficiently in the public eye. Inaugurations, openings and closings are thin on the ground and they will be seen at fewer politically-expedient functions. If they but knew it, they harvest votes only from those with invites. And they are only interested in the lunch or dinner after.

RECENT donations of wool and various materials to Help At Home (HAH) Mar Menor charity, has enabled volunteers to make a range of gifts, crafts and decorations for their Christmas Fayres. Pam Prince, HAH Secretary held craft mornings at her home and said: “The girls have been so busy making these super gifts, novelties and toys from scratch and have had a lot of fun thinking up and trying different things. All the wool and materials used have been donated, so all money raised will go back into the community, who we would like to thank for their donations.” More than €300 was raised from the home-made stalls at a craft show event at La Vereda restaurant. The HAH crafts will next be on display at DFS in San Javier on Friday, November 22. Meanwhile the charity held its annual nearly new fashion show and auction at La Vereda Restaurant in Sucina. Zigi and her ladies modelled some fabulous fashions, all of which had

Staying positive in the fight against cancer TO mark the end of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Euro Weekly News reporter Gemma Quinn spoke with two ladies to listen to their experiences of breast cancer. They wanted to tell their inspirational stories to help other ladies going through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Keep life as normal as possible IT was two years ago when Martine Shindler was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 49. Martine, from Mazarron, underwent surgery, chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. For Martine, the way through her intense treatment was to remain positive and keep busy, determined to remain at work despite the doctor wanting to sign her off for nine months. She said: “After much pleading and begging, I returned to work less than eight weeks after the operation. I also continued to work throughout my four months of chemotherapy and 25 consecutive days of radiotherapy, working until 2pm and then rushing home for a bite to eat before making the hour-long journey to the hospital for my treatment.” Martine adds: “I categorically refused to stock up my cupboard with pills and potions that were suggested ‘in case of side-effects’ and apart from a 24-hour period, four days after each three-week chemotherapy session when I developed flu-like symptoms, I sailed through the treatment. My employers were very supportive and we worked my three mornings a week around the day I always knew was going to be ‘that day’.” For Martine it was important to continue with life as much as possible including power walking, socialising and swimming. When her radiotherapy finished in July last year she took part in the local MABS Race for Life, raising just over €1,100 for the cancer charity.

Hardest thing: “Losing my appetite during the radiotherapy, I think, as I enjoy my food. And also the hourjourney there and back to the hospital for 25 days for the radiotherapy.”

Advice to other women: “The word ‘cancer’ is a still a scary one but I would like all ladies to know it doesn’t always have to be. Try and stay positive and continue life as normal as much as your treatment allows you to.” “I have also put down on paper my experiences, as well as translating the hospital brochure that I was given just before starting chemotherapy from Spanish to English. Hopefully that will help alleviate the ‘unknown’ for those that are now being diagnosed.” Martine also praised the Spanish National Health Service and the treatment she received. She continues to have follow-up appointments and is hoping to have a reconstruction next year. “Everything so far is positive, and the other thing that helped my recovery is the unfailing support of my marvellous partner. I have to say a massive thank you to him for his generous spirit, love, care, for being there through the ups and downs, and helping keep a sense of normality about our lives.”

Within days she was called for the test which found a lump, and very quickly she was having a biopsy and being told lumps had been found in three places and she had an aggressive form of cancer. The news was hard to digest for Maria, especially as she had already battled cancer around 20 years ago when she spent two years fighting the disease and learning to walk again as a tumour was removed from her buttock and uterus. She underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy following surgery to remove her breast. “It was a long process and I had to learn to live with it psychologically. I was having regular CAT scans when my tumour of 20 years ago was found to be growing bigger. It was a secondary cancer that had laid dormant but had grown 16 centmetres in a year.” Facing chemo once again, she admits: “I was very proud of my appearance and it was very hard facing losing my hair again. The chemo didn’t work completely and now, whilst free of breast cancer I am still living with the tumour as surgery to remove it is complicated and poses dangers.” Rather than dwelling on her condition after undergoing cancer treatment not once, but three times, Maria has thrown herself into fundraising. She founded Maria and The Pink Ladies, an army of hard working ladies who raise funds for the AECC cancer charity, of which Maria is now President of the Torrevieja branch, and their research and early screening programmes. Since 2010, Maria and The Pink Ladies have raised around €140,000.

Better times ahead... or not? THE good news keeps on coming. The Spanish economy has finally come out of recession. After 27 months of contraction the third quarter of the year saw growth in the economy. Tourism figures for Spain are up, with many regions recording record levels of visitors.

Our reporters went out onto the street and asked: ‘Is the feel-good factor coming back to Spain?’ BOB COWAN and Sandy Tucker, who live in Partaloa and are both retired, remain downbeat about the economy. “There is not a feel-good factor in our opinion.The demolition of the houses in Cantoria is a big blow. (Editor’s note: Two ‘illegal’ homes in the town owned by expatriates were demolished. Hundreds of other cases are unresolved.) “Spain needs to get things in order. People want to pay their bills like IBI but are not able to. People have lost their savings investing in Spain. The cost of living is much higher now even on basic things like vegetables.” Johnny Slade, a DJ living in Arboleas, agreed. He said: “The Spanish Government can’t see in front of its nose. I don’t think there is a feel-good factor. Everything is complicated in Spain. “The banks Bob and Sandy have not seen a feel-good factor.

Tea is next big trend STARBUCKS is starting a new venture to make tea the next big trend in hot drinks, and has opened its first ‘tea bar’ in New York City. The world renowned Seattle-based company says its new franchise will be known as the Teavana Tea Bar and will promote a healthy environment to enjoy its selection of Teavana Fine Teas, with unique blends including Spiced Mandarin Oolong tea, a Pineaple Kona Pop or Blueberry Bliss iced tea. The Tea Bars will also serve small plates of healthy option food including flatbreads and salads. THE rare and costly Yuzu fruit from Japan is predicted to take the world by storm next year. It tastes like a cross between a lemon, mandarin and grapefruit and is already widely stocked in Asia. And now the popularity of this fruit is growing in Western cuisine and it’s being used to flavour everything from beer and chewing gum to vinegar and cocktails.

World’s strongest beer A SCOTTISH brewery claims it has created the strongest beer in the world. Brewmeister’s latest creation, Snake Venom, reaches a 67.5 per cent of alcohol by volume (ABV). This massive figure was achieved after a nine month development process in which both beer and Champagne yeast were used. Contrary to what it may seem, the Scottish beverage tastes like a beer rather than a spirit. Or so claim its creators, who describe its flavour as “malty and very pleasant.” The brew is presented with a yellow label warning drinkers to beware. Snake Venom can be bought online for £50 (€58.68) per bottle, a price that certainly matches its alcohol content. This is not the first time Brewmeister has released a beer to challenge people’s alcohol tolerance. Last year they launched Armageddon, a beer with ‘just’ 65 per cent ABV.

We chatted about moving home, his insecurity and

Electric car sales points to arrive in Spain TESLA MOTORS will arrive in the Spanish market next year. The electric car manufacturer will open its first official sales point in Spain during the first half of 2014. Madrid has been the location chosen by Tesla to embark on the Spanish market, opening a sales point that will be directly managed by them. The California-based company hasn’t discounted the possibility of opening another sales point in the country. According to the company’s Communications Director for Southern Europe, Roberto Toro, Tesla entering the Spanish market is proof of how important this market is for the manufacturer. Apart from selling electric cars, Tesla will focus on the installation of so-called ‘superchargers’ in Spain. These charging stations, reportedly the fastest in the world, provide half a car battery charge in 20 minutes and a full charge in 75 minutes. The company aims at installing these superchargers near amenities like roadside restaurants, cafes and shopping centres. The idea is to allow Tesla car users to drive from charging station to charging station with only 80 per cent of the car battery. The American manufacturer also has big plans for the European market. Tesla expects 40 per cent of its worldwide sales to come from Europe, where it plans to open at least 12 official sales points.

Players’ tribute to David MONTE players paid their tributes to defender David who was seriously injured in the game against Racing Playas de Orihuela. They wore t-shirts saying get well soon. David will miss the entire season with his knee injury. Montesinos were still looking for their first home win of the season against Grupo Caliche, but it was not to be. The whole game was a scrappy affair. Monte didn’t look comfortable in defence, and keeper Christian came to the rescue on several occasions. Caliche were playing good passing football as Monte were looking for the breakaway and they nearly got it on 35 mins, but Caliche were calm and continued to play well. Next week Monte are away to CD Thader B.

DESPITE having two new players in Alcon and Gilberto, Mazarron were unable to stop their slide down the table and came away well defeated by La Hoya by three goals to nil. In the opening 20 minutes both sides were equally matched and could well have scored with Cecilio and Jose Da having good opportunities for Mazarron. However in the

25th minute a good advantage was played by the referee who later returned to book Gilberto for the tackle and a long range shot from the left wing sped along the ground and into the far corner of the net. For the rest of the half, Mazarron matched La Hoya and had several opportunities with Alfonso missing and Cecilio hitting the bar. At the start of the second half Mazarron went to sleep and a well worked goal saw La Hoya double their lead in the 47th minute. In the 66th minute came the goal of the game. Jose Da was dispossessed in the centre circle and the La

Good scoring for Fairwayz FAIRWAYZ GOLF SOCIETY played an individual stableford competition at Vistabella. The Gold Category was won by Steve Lawrence with 42 points, with John Saunders (35) placing second. The best back nine went to Terry Rogers and best back nine to Peter Jones. Nearest the pins went to Terry Rogers and John Saunders. The Silver Category was won by Gary Haisman (37), followed by Dave Titchen (35) in second place. The best front nine went to Tony Macmillan and best back nine to Ryan Rogers. The nearest the pins went to Tony Macmillan and Bill Howie. The society would like to say a special thanks to ‘Mick the grip’ who came along and put up prizes for the 1st and 2nd place winners and nearest the pins of each category. He was also selling raffle tickets for a draw in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
