We won’t forget Tears shed at balloon release cancer awareness event By Gemma Quinn AS a mass of pink balloons floated into the Mediterranean sky, tears were shed as many people remembered a loved one lost to breast cancer. As part of International Breast Cancer Awareness Day, around 1,600 heliumfilled pink balloons were released at Zenia Boulevard. The day-long event was organised by the AECC cancer charity’s Torrevieja President Maria Wilson and her Pink Ladies (pictured). Maria said she was blown away by the support from all nationalities and she will never forget the sight of so many balloons being released: “It brought a tear to the eye of many in the audience and most dedicated their balloon to a loved one who lost the fight to this evil disease.”

There was ongoing entertainment before the release of the balloons at 7pm to the sound of Nessun Dorma, sung by Paul Michael. A total of

€4,163.50 was raised on the day from the sale of the balloons and donations. Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón also marked the day with the release of balloons from Torrevieja Hospital, organised by Afecáncer charity.

Benidorm launch for Poppy Appeal POPPY APPEAL 2013 was launched in Benidorm with a parade along the Levante seafront, headed by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. Fourteen squadrons were represented in the parade and joined by two Chelsea Pensioners. The procession ended at the Rincon de Loix, with speeches from Chris Wyatt, District North Chairman and Poppy Appeal co-ordinator Robin Hargrave. The British consul in Alicante, Paul Rodwell said: “Welfare is at the heart of The Royal British Legion and I am pleased as Consul and President of District North, that it

continues to help brave men and women from our armed forces and their dependants.” The mayor of Benidorm, Agustin Navarro, said: “This is a town that maintains the best ties of friendship with the people from the UK. Your generosity is important to those who, in defence of the most important values of our society, stained many fields with blood.” The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921 to help servicemen and their families. There are around 1,800 members in Alicante Province. Last year they raised €170,000.

Rents keep on going down MURCIA is the third cheapest place in Spain to rent housing. The average price is now €5.09 per square metre, with prices falling by 1 per cent. Valencia Region is just above and ranked the fourth cheapest community with prices falling by 0.7 per cent in the third

quarter of the year. The average price now stands at €5.19 per square metre; 25.8 per cent less than the national average which in September was €6.99 per square metre. According to the report by the real estate portal www.fotocasa.es and the IESE

XCITEMENT is mounting as filming of the latest Hollywood blockbuster to be shot in Spain was due to start this week. Sir Ridley Scott’s biblical epic Exodus is being shot in Almeria from now until mid-November. Several auditions have been held in the province to find thousands of people who will take part as extras. They will mainly be used for filming on the sets which have been built in Sierra Alhamilla and the Macael quarry, famous for its marble. A further 500 people have been hired in the province. Rumour has it that one of the stars of the show, Sigourney Weaver, will not be coming to Almeria, as the scenes she is in are going to be shot in London. Despite this, Almeria won’t miss out on seeing some famous faces including Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turturro and Ben Kingsley. The film tells the

Residents in the area hope that once filming is over, the sets will remain as a tourist attraction. CRIMINAL GANG: Weapons recovered as two arrested.

Two held on suspicion of internet forgery charges TWO men have been arrested in Alicante on suspicion of 13 counts of bank fraud and forgery. The pair set up a website advertising the sale of secondhand machinery, providing the

name and address of a real company. However, the phone number was fake and after sending out an invoice, ‘customers’ had to transfer money to a bank account with the goods never arriving.

Alicante province and the Canales del Taibilla water board, which provides the domestic supply for one million residents. An amendment to the Environment Evaluation Law removed the disliked ‘Narbona clause’ from the National Water Plan created by the former Minister, Cristina Narbona. This stipulated that Tajo transfers would decrease as more water became available from desalination plants. Narbona’s scheme was unpopular with the province’s agricultural industries as desalinated water, charged at €1 a cubic metre, costs considerably more than the Tajo water.

€900,000 social security fraud A BUSINESSMAN has been arrested for allegedly defrauding €900,000 from the General Treasury of the Social Security through fictitious contracts to nearly 80 workers across Alicante and Murcia. The man was arrested, along with his advisor and 76 others, believed to have been employed fraudulently.

NEWS Traffickers arrested TEN people have been arrested in Alicante for their alleged links with a network of human traffickers. The gang was charging €7,000 to Moroccans offering them passage through Spain to France. Arriving on the peninsular from Tangiers and Melilla the gang would put them up in a safe house in Alicante or Murcia province until it was safe to transfer them on. The Alicante operation dates back to November 2012 when the National Police arrested six people at Alicante airport and the port of Melilla who were preparing to travel to the peninsula with falsified French documentation. The detainees have appeared in court in Elche and Orihuela.

Police threatened with chainsaw POLICE in San Fulgencio chased two men who threw a chainsaw at their patrol car. Officers spotted the suspects apparently attempting to steal from a vehicle. They fled in a waiting car when the officers arrived and a chase ensued.

Drug raids in Totana OPERATION TIRALINEAS in Murcia to combat drug peddling has seen the arrest of three men aged 19, 32 and 45. They were detained by police in Totana who found 81 kilos of marihuana which was being distributed and sold from a plantation on the outskirts of the town. Hashish and cocaine were also confiscated by police.

Local Police and Guardia Civil from Dolores and Guardamar joined the pursuit as the occupants then left their car and brandished a chainsaw and hammer at the police car. They escaped on foot to nearby orchards as police discovered four marihjuana plants in their vehicle.

Quad bike rider told to pay up A QUAD BIKE driver has been ordered to pay â‚Ź36,000 in compensation to a passenger who was riding with him. A court in Murcia found that not only was the bike uninsured but it was also designed for only one user at a time. As the driver had allowed the passenger to get on board, knowing that the quad was meant for one rider only, the court found him liable for the injuries sustained during their ride.

€12m for seafront TORREVIEJA is considering spending nearly €12 million in the 2014 and 2015 budgets on five remodelling projects. The council has announced that the plans include renovation of the city’s seafront with walkways and the West Pier esplanade being considered for an overhaul.

These projects have been outlined publicly by the government team on several occasions since 2010, but this time money has been earmarked in the budget. The money allocated for the work is part of the measures to compensate for the impact the desalination plant would have on the city.

Snacks with smiles THE Platform Stop Evictions of Torrevieja, known for its work fighting to prevent people being evicted from their homes, has presented a new solidarity scheme. The project ‘Lunches and Snacks with Smiles’ is an initiative which will benefit,

for the moment, around 28 children attending the Ciudad del Mar school in the city who are at risk of social exclusion. Stop Evictions contributes economically at a cost of €2 a day for a child to have lunch and a break-time snack.

NEWS N-332 plan MONEY is being allocated in next year’s State Budget to resurrect the road widening project around Torrevieja. Widening of the N332 has already taken place reducing congestion at Guardamar and along the Orihuela Costa, but remains single file in Torrevieja. Friends need help to keep going FRIENDS UNLIMITED, the Quesada based social group of the HELP Association Vega Baja, may have to close at the end of the year unless volunteers can be found to continue to help run it. Due to the imminent retirement of the meeting co-ordinator and the group’s bookkeeper, unless replacement, committed volunteers come forward to assist at the regular weekly meetings, which are held most Thursday afternoons throughout the year in Quesada, it will have to close after the final event on December 19. Ron Perrin, one of the original founders of the group, which was started in November

2006, and current President of HELP, told the 56 members that after the recent committee meeting as nobody had stepped up to volunteer to fill these two vital roles, the group would cease to operate. He said: “Friends Unlimited has brought many strangers together, who have now formed

lasting friendships, which in turn has made it one of the most successful social groups in the area.” In addition, though never planned to be run as a fundraising arm for HELP, should Friends Unlimited now close, the donations made each year, of an average €5,000 will stop.

From January 31, 2014, the DWP will need an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and Bank Identification Code (BIC) in order to make payments to expatriates’ accounts in Spain and other Eurozone countries. This change is due to new European Union regulations which aim to make payments between EU countries

Named after the Minister for Education, Jose Ignacio Wert, the Wert law comprises controversial measures including Religious Studies now counting in the final grades towards obtaining a grant, or singlesex schools being partly funded by the state. In addition, the law, which is a reform of the current Organic Law of Education (LOE), puts an end to language immersion programmes in regions where two languages are recognised as official, like Cataluña and the Basque Country.

MABS receives €1,115 from quiz nights OVER €1,100 has been raised by La Rosa Bar in San Cayetano for the Murcia/Mar Menor branch of MABS Cancer Support Group. Owners Julie and Mark McCluskey started a weekly quiz night in the summer with proceeds going to the charity. SEVENTEEN people were arrested in Madrid for their alleged involvement in a jewellery heist in which €23 million worth of items was stolen.

The detainees have been charged with white slave trade, sexual exploitation, corruption of minors, prostitution, document falsification and belonging to a criminal gang. They include the managers of the brothels where she was forced to work and members of the families who held her. Three of them had European arrest warrants against them. Police have seized forged documents, her original documents, travel documents, drugs and a vehicle.

Adoptive parents are charged with murder THE adoptive parents of a 12-year-old girl found dead near Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, have been charged with murder. The body of the girl, of Chinese origin, was found on a track in Teo, northern Spain, by a couple heading to a disco on September 22. Her mother owns a property in the town. An analysis of the girl’s hair has revealed that she had been taking sedatives for some time, and a post mortem report revealed

that she had been given a high dose of a sedative before death. Police report she was tied up and suffocated. A piece of orange rope found at the scene of the crime is identical to one found in her mother’s home. Her parents, a lawyer and journalist who adopted her 12 years ago, reported her missing but it was later discovered that she had been with her mother after the time when the woman claimed she had left her alone in their house.

Girl, 15, forced to work as prostitute TEN people were arrested in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, for allegedly forcing a girl of 15 to work as a prostitute. The Romanian girl left her country after being promised a job as an aupair, and was initially taken to a brothel in Valladolid. She managed to escape and went to Santiago with several other people, but she was snatched by a group of people who allegedly beat her, insulted her and sexually exploited her. She was located when she was attempting to escape from them.

The couple have been remanded in prison. A people’s jury will hear the case in court. The couple refused to take part in a reconstruction of the last hours of their daughter’s life. The investigation into the death of Asunta indicates she may have been killed because she had inherited money from her maternal grandparents, who died last year. Her parents couldn’t access the inheritance unless she died and her body was found.

The National Police report that amongst the detainees, there is a known criminal known as the ‘troll’ who normally operated in Madrid’s Golden Mile and is believed to be the mastermind behind the heist in December 2012. The ‘troll’, said to be a violent common thief, is believed to have planned what is one of the largest jewellery heists in the world. The thieves accessed the Diarsa watch shop in the Ciudad Lineal area of Madrid where they cracked the safes and stole more than

Airport looking for budget airline THE government believes that a low-cost airline will lift Barajas out of the doldrums. There was a 22 per cent drop in passengers using the Madrid airport in August compared with 2012. September saw an 11.5 per cent reduction. Nationwide passenger traffic fell by 5 per cent since January, but this rose to 14 per cent at Madrid-Barajas.

Minister of Public Works Ana Pastor believes that a Barajas-based low-cost airline could help to reverse this trend. “We are putting the finishing touches to an agreement,” Pastor recently confirmed in a radio interview. Asked to name the company, she declined to give more details. “We shall wait until the agreement is signed,” she said.

No more hidden Swiss accounts NO undeclared Spanish bank accounts remain in Switzerland. All were regularised during the Spanish government’s fiscal amnesty last year, claimed the Swiss Private Bankers Association (SPBA). Practically every Spanish account-holder accepted the amnesty in order to pay less than the usual penalty for undeclared assets, an SPBA spokesman told Spanish journalists recently. The Spanish government announced that the amnesty brought approximately €40 billion to the surface. Tax authority Hacienda received €1.2 billion, although this was less than half of the expected €2.5 billion.

At one stage Madrid was interested in the Rubik system where, in exchange for anonymity, Switzerland levies a withholding tax at source to discharge an accountholder’s tax liability. This would then have been forwarded to Spain. Despite initial interest, nothing more was done and Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro denied in parliament last December that Spain contemplated taking the Rubik route. Although Italy and Greece are considering the system, only Austria and the UK have so far signed up to it. Vienna is said to be satisfied with the results although London is allegedly “disappointed.”

SOMETIMES it’s the little things that do count. The other day a friend of mine, who has just moved into a new apartment with her husband, mentioned they have already kitted out their new pad with a sofa, dining room table, chairs and a brand new bed. All paid by cash. My jaw dropped. These days our lovely friends at the bank aren’t in the habit of giving out extra money on top of mortgages to help furnish a new house - so how did she manage to buy all these lovely new things?

KEEP SAVING: Put away loose change. Well, my pal began the process of purchasing this particular apartment off plan a couple of years ago, and, in what ended up being three years of waiting for the place to be built and finished,

herself and her husband managed to put away a tidy sum of savings in a piggy bank nonetheless. Every evening when the pair came home from work they

would empty any small change from their wallets into a piggy bank. Between the two of them on a daily basis they might have tipped in up to €8, but even at an average of €4 per day into a piggy bank, in one year that amounts to almost €1,500. So you can imagine that after three years they had saved up quite a lot of money. The best part of the whole thing, she told me, is that they never felt like they were saving. It wasn’t as painful as trying to put €100 away in one go. By putting a few loose coins into a savings jar each night, saving was easy. I think it’s a great idea - and while I don’t own a piggy bank, I have instead cut a coin slot into a used five-litre water bottle, which now serves as a savings device. It’s only day four of saving so far, but in 361 days from now I too hope to buy some fancy new furnishings for my home!

BBVA sells stake in China bank SPANISH bank BBVA is strengthening its capital reserves and meeting new banking rules by selling a 5.1 per cent stake in China CITIC Bank Corporation Limited. Surveillance cameras: who sees the images? Q. Readers have brought up more questions regarding surveillance cameras in Spain after our earlier piece. In particular, they want to know who sees the images, and how this works.

A. When you apply to the Agencia de Protección de Datos, the APD, for a permit to install a video camera, you must identify the department or person who will administrate the recorded images. When you are granted a permit, you

will also receive an ‘official’ warning sign for the public to know that cameras are present. You have probably seen these small yellow notices in various establishments, such as your bank. If you approach the sign, you can read the small print, which identifies the person in charge of the images. If you have a complaint, you have the right, under the Law of Data Protection, to have your images erased from the data bank. These images can generally be kept for only one month. No use can be made of them except for security purposes. If there are break-ins in the community parking garage, the recorded video of that night will be carefully studied. Otherwise, as various users of security cameras have told me, it is quite likely that no one will ever look at them before they are thrown away. If, by unfortunate chance, the video cameras have caught Mr. Smith and Mrs. Jones in a compromising situation, and this later comes to light, the registered administrator of the images will be in serious trouble indeed, facing high fines and even possible criminal charges. These rules are the public’s protection against illegal use of the videos.

Unjust law for innocent homeowners REGARDING the homes demolished in Cantoria (Reduced to rubble, Issue 1476). These poor people, the judge agreed, had bought their homes in good faith, yet he ordered the demolition of their properties before they received a penny in compensation. Surely the most just outcome would have been to order the developer of the illegal homes to buy back the houses and then put a demolition order on them. As it is, the only people punished are the innocent house buyers who have lost their homes and money. The builders still have the cash, and the town council has washed its hands of the affair. But then the courts are about the law, not justice. Samantha Weston (By email) Editor’s note: the EWN reported how two illegal homes in Almeria Province were demolished on a judge’s orders, despite the owners having bought them in good faith.

Scrooge-like I DO not think I have ever read a more revolting letter than D Blanchette’s (Issue 1476). Was it not Ebenezer Scrooge who expressed the hope that paupers would go off and die right away, so as to reduce the surplus population? What right has your correspondent to decide that he has a better right to go on living, than children who are suffering privations which it is hard for us even to imagine? No one denies that population cannot grow indefinitely, but experience has shown that when medical and general living standards are good, birth rates fall, as has happened in Western Europe. Mind you, Mr Blanchette’s views look well in a paper which continues to indulge Leapy Lee’s paranoias. Now he tells us that because some taxi firms are staffed by immigrants, this proves that they practise racism. What evidence has he for such a wild

Cover up I AM happy to see Palma Council (Cover up or be fined, Mallorca Issue 1476) is going to make it an offence to walk around the city semi-naked, punishable with €200 fines. I really do not understand why people, many of them obese, think it remotely appropriate to wander around town in just

Feria rip-off MY visiting daughter and I went to the Nerja feria on Saturday, October 12. On the way home, we stopped for tapas at a bar called Sevillano. We had a glass of wine, a beer, two nice tapas, and the bill was just over €4. The following day, we decided

to go to another bar, which I praised, telling my daughter how much she’d like it. We had one glass of wine, one lemonade, two beers and four tapas. This should have amounted to under €10. Instead, my 22-year-old daughter was presented with a bill for €29.50. Open doors WHEN will the powers-that-be finally allow Sunday trading? I work hard through the week, and it is galling not to be able to do my shopping on a Sunday, the only day I have free. Living in a ‘tourism area’ the shops CAN stay open, but only in the summer months. But now they are back to being shut again. Surely the simple measure of Sunday opening would create more employment in these difficult times. And it would mean I would not have to do a late

Seats please AIRPORTS never seem to have enough places to sit. It does not matter where you are in the world, if there are any delays many passengers must stand. The problem is worse late at night when people stretch out to sleep across three or four seats, never mind that it means three other people then have to stand. Sheer selfishness! Flying back to London, I encountered just this problem at Stansted Airport. I had four hours to wait for the first London train, and spent them on my feet whilst others happily slept. Paws for thought THE English language is rich in collective nouns to distinguish between different groups of animals: a herd of horses, cows or elephants; a school of fish, etc. Less known, even for many natives of Shakespeare’s language, are: an ‘exaltation’ of doves, and supposedly because they’re so wise, a ‘parliament’ of owls. However, until recently, I never knew the anthropomorphic term for a group of baboons. I knew that they are the noisiest, most stubborn, least intelligent and most dangerous of all the primates. And what is the collective noun in English for this group? Exactly! A ‘congress’ of baboons is what we Americans now have representing us in Washington DC! grandad was 99 when I went to visit him, on what was sadly the last occasion. He lay in his hospital bed, looking extremely frail, but still bearing a wonderful head of hair. He was a very successful butcher and always maintained that greasy hands rubbed through his hair on a daily basis was responsible. (Gawd!) Mind you, that’s all Brylcreem was, scented grease!

T IS not only a national scandal, but also an almost inexplicable waste the way the British treat their elderly citizens. Cast aside like bundles of old, no longer fashionable, clothes, they are stuck out of sight by younger generations, who have no respect or time for them and often regard them as an embarrassment. All that wealth of experience with WISER: Ignore positively treasure troves of knowledge, completely discarded to the advice of the make way for new generations, older generation bristling with inexperience and for at your peril! the most part arrogant enough to believe they will not only make better life decisions, but will also stay young forever. Ha! Give us a break! This blatant disregard of human experience is slowing the progress of the West at an alarming rate. I don’t know of any life situation or business that has prospered by starting completely afresh every few years. I still vividly remember a wonderful example of elderly acumen when, despite an inability to keep up with modern technology, back in the mid-sixties I received truly sound advice from the voice of real experience. My dear old

Ah, Grandad, 99 years of experience and I didn’t take it. Take fair warning, all you youngsters; ignore the knowledge of those who manifested long before you at your peril. The successful Asian races don’t. Could you all do everyone a favour and give nothing at all to these East European beggars, who are multiplying like fleas on our streets and thoroughfares? They are a blight on the landscape, a filthy disgrace and a professionally organised racket. Personally, I find it extremely disconcerting to find the same grubby hand recently shoved out for coppers, later holding to a filthy ear, a mobile phone I couldn’t even afford myself! An entertaining thought Many artistes entertain us simply because they enjoy doing so Mike Walsh Mike Walsh. Based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.

T

HROUGHOUT the Costas live some of the era’s greatest entertainers. Such artistes visit Mediterranean Spain whilst others choose to drop anchor in our safe haven harbours. Entertainers work tirelessly during the hours when the rest of us are taking a break. Most are paid far less than their true worth and the younger ones have tiring day jobs. I am reminded of a true story. As a social experiment, a newspaper invited Joshua Bell, one of the 20th century’s great violinists to perform as a busker in a Washington DC railway station. Few passers-by took notice as he played pieces that had earlier played to sell-out audiences. Many artistes entertain us simply because they enjoy doing so. It certainly isn’t for the pittance many receive. A bungling lawyer wouldn’t pick up the

As I browse the Costa communities’ media, I see advertised entertainers who have rocked the world. Some were cruise liner entertainers or once backed world famous bands. Many were household name stars who once saw their names in lights. Fans paid over the odds for tickets to see

idols who went on world tours and entertained the world’s elite. Time took its toll on these entertainers as it took its toll on us. No, stop right there! Not all are quite as equal as at first it appears. Practice makes perfect, like the best of wines many artistes improve with age. They become better at doing what they do best. Furthermore, without fanfares most perform free of charge for charities, many

of which are very profitable concerns. Where does the fault lie? Like Joshua Bell, these outstanding artistes play not to sell-out audiences but to a table or two populated by family, friends and passersby looking for a diversion. Such artistes have already proved their worth. Could the fault lie with local media? No. One cannot turn a page without seeing a galaxy of stars. Does the blame lie with venue managers? Many venues are good at using quality entertainers to lure clients to their dining tables. It is a rewarding experience. I know restaurants where even off-season booking a table is a necessity. It is not because they are cheap or in the right location as many are virtually inaccessible. It is because they give value for money and outstanding entertainment is on the menu, too. That is their art. If you experience a truly talented artiste or ensemble playing to empty tables the chances are it is due to sloppy or complacent management. Perhaps we too could shake off inertia. My wife and I are often tired but when we make the effort we are rarely disappointed. I will clap to that.

LAYING bingo, snacking while sitting on a monument, feeding pigeons - all seem innocent enough to you? These, though, are just some of the reasons why many Brits find themselves faced with whopping fines or in some instances arrested or detained abroad. Every year Brits are caught out by local laws and customs commonplace in the UK but which carry serious consequences elsewhere. Well, you can now add Madrid to the list with its own planned anti-social by-laws. In probably the greatest

clampdown on anti-social behaviour in decades, these include fines for juggling, skateboarding, littering, begging, soliciting prostitutes, carpet-beating / dog-feeding in public and using a park bench for - don’t ask! ‘something other than sitting.’ Hypocritically, though, despite unveiling these new, wide-ranging laws, Madrid’s government is desperately trying to overturn another established one: Spain’s antismoking legislation. Specifically so that gamblers can smoke inside Eurovegas, Madrid’s planned and eagerly-awaited megacasino resort. (Notwithstanding chucking a cigarette butt on the pavement outside could still incur a fine up to €750.) I find this truly alarming. If Madrid’s rightwing People’s Party government manages to

overturn the anti-smoking legislation - the most sensible legislation passed here in my not-impartial opinion - what’s the betting it won’t be extended nationwide by cigarsmoking President Mariano Rajoy and his national PP government? And we’ll all end up inhaling other peoples’ smoke once more? Now, non-smokers shouldn’t be forced to do this in public places, although smokers should feel free to slowly kill themselves in the comfort of their own homes. They smell like ashtrays anyway, have prematurely wrinkly skin and look like they’ve been shipwrecked for months on a desert island with Gordon Brown. Alcohol surely kills at least as many innocent victims in road traffic accidents and random drunken assaults as tobacco does with passive

The tobacco industry has spent millions trying to disprove the effects of passive smoking and convince smokers they’re a put upon lot. It targets the poorest and most vulnerable in society, not only in the West but globally, encouraging them to become hooked as young as

possible on a drug that’s extremely addictive, kills them slowly but surely, but is only mildly euphoric. A pretty bad trade-off, eh? THE surrealist movement was perhaps the driving force of 20th century art and Madrid has no less than two major exhibitions devoted to the genre this autumn. Entitled Surrealis, the exhibition at the Fundacion March has been organised by Art before Surrealism in conjunction with the Germanisches National museum of Nuremberg, which possesses one of the most important collections of German medieval art. After four years of preparation more than 200 works on loan from both public and private collections adorn the walls of the exhibition. The aim of the organisers is to show that while surrealism came to the fore in the 20th century, it actually dates back to the Middle Ages. The sketches, prints, engravings and paintings dating from the 15th until 19th century all explore the themes of fantasy, imagination, dreams, desire and the unreal, which we associate with surrealist art today. While Andre Breton, the French writer and poet, is considered the founder of surrealism in the melting pot of Paris in the early 1920s, artists like Bosch, Arcimboldo, Brueghel, Durer, Goding, Zundt, Van der Heyden, Stoer and Piranesi had used the genre centuries earlier. They used perspectives, symmetry and mathematical designs, giving rise

During the 18th and 19th centuries Goya, Herbert Bayer and Hannah Hoch’s imaginative works continued to bend the accepted rules. Breton’s philosophical definition of surrealist art was, “Surrealism is based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of previously neglected associations, in the omnipotence of the dream, and in the disinterested play of thoughts.” The exhibition includes the first surrealist manifesto of Breton in 1924 as well as posters, catalogues, leaflets, magazines

During the 20th century surrealism, perhaps subconsciously, expanded into every facet of our lives. Bunuel’s films and Disney’s 1940 animated film, Fantasia, are perfect examples of early surrealist work. More recently Monty Python was pure madness and movies like Star Wars, Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, Kostner’s Waterworld, Terminator and the Lord of the Rings saga, set in fantasy worlds full of strange creatures, monsters and visual effects, fall into the category of surrealism.

Breton was instrumental in promoting surrealism as a major new art form during the early part of the 20th century as photography and film complemented paintings and prints. The modern works on display include paintings by Picasso, Dali, Klee and Miro and photos of Man Ray and Brassai. During the middle of the 20th century, Dali became the central figure in the movement promoting himself as well as his paintings, photographs and on film with Luis Bunuel and becoming in the process, an international celebrity personifying surrealist art. The Thyssen-Bornemisza museum has also chosen this autumn to present its first monographic exhibition on the surrealist movement. Called Surrealism and the Dream, it actually begins where the

Fundacion March exhibition ends. It covers the development of surrealism during the 20th century and the important contribution of women artists. According to curator, Jose Jimenez, “Surrealism changed the concept of art as it developed into a multi-media art form with paintings, sculpture, collages, objects, photography and film. There were no barriers to creativity.” It has taken more than three years to bring together the 163 major works which originate from the museum’s own collection as well as on loan from private and public collections around the world including the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Tate Modern in London and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art. Works by the surrealist masters Dali, Tanguy, Miro, Magritte, Delvaux, Dominguez, De Chirico, Bellmer and Ernst are on show together with rare works by female artists such as Leonor Fini, Dorothea Tanning, Karel Teige, Kay Sage, and Leonora Carrington. Photographs by

Brasssai, Man Ray and Claude Cahun and extracts from films by Luis Bunuel point to the adoption by surrealist artists of the new art forms of the 20th century. Breton’s idea of surrealism was to overcome predetermined obstacles; logical obstacles of bowing to accepted forms, moral obstacles, including sexual and social taboos, and obstacles of taste, to allow total freedom of expression. The one consistent theme of surrealist art has been erotic dreams and fantasy, whether in paintings or sculpture, and technology merely expanded the frontiers as photography and film provided a unique way of liberating creative talent to show an unreal world of dreams, mystery and desire where nothing is what it seems. The works on display vividly portray what Breton had in mind. Although not planned, the two exhibitions complement each other offering the public a unique opportunity to learn about and understand the history and development of surrealist art. ©Peter Fieldman

HE Spanish regard themselves as Catholic but few go to church. Unless, that is, it involves dressing up for weddings, christenings and first communions, weeping at funerals and turning out for processions requiring little religious commitment. No-one denies the Church its right to honour the 522 priests, monks and nuns who died for their faith or the right to describe them as martyrs. But it should try not to politicise their path towards sainthood. Decades after the Constitution set it out in black and white, the Spanish hierarchy is still reluctant to accept that Spain no longer has a state

religion. And it is still reluctant to pay much heed to its silence regarding the thousands of Republicans who died after the war, persecuted for their own type of faith.

HE phrase ‘more mass shootings’ seems somewhat heartless given that it concerns the death of everyday folk. But in America, the land of 300 million people and just as many guns, mass shootings have become an inevitable occurrence. Last month a troubled ex-Navy reservist, one Aaron Alexis, walked into a Washington DC navy yard with a legally purchased shotgun and brought the lives of 12 people to an abrupt and bloody end before being shot by the police. Then, three days later, a gang-related shooting took place in a residential park on Chicago’s South Side in which more than a dozen people were injured, some of them children. And what is just as tragic as the events

themselves is the reaction of the gun lobby. Every time these atrocities occur they take to the airwaves to constantly reaffirm the same old mantra that guns don’t kill people, people kill people. And that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. So buy more guns. You’ll be safer. It is, to quote a typically American phrase, bassackwards. Reacting to gun crime by buying more guns.

So to weapons of a different kind, or lack thereof. It seems that cruise missiles will not be raining down on Syria any time soon. Russian diplomatic intervention in the affair has proved timely and has struck a chord with a general public overwhelmingly opposed to armed intervention in the civil war. It would seem that the U.S. foreign policy of “let’s blow something up and see what happens” has become far less palatable to the peoples of the western democracies. The question is, will it stay that way? Talking of questions, here’s one: why would an American want Spain to revise its anti-

smoking laws? The answer: money, which is understandable as your average billionaire, despite riches beyond the dreams of avarice, usually possesses a lexicon of just the one word: more, and will do anything to get it. The man in question is 80year-old Sheldon Adelson, casino-owning gambling guru, currently on the books with a net worth of close to $30 billion (€22 billion). He wants to construct a Vegas-like gambling Mecca in Alcorcón on the outskirts of Madrid, to be named Eurovegas. The problem is in 2011 Spain banned smoking in all public places, and it’s a well known fact that gamblers like to smoke but don’t like leaving the blackjack table or the roulette wheel to do so. Hence Mr. Adelson has kindly informed Madrid that Eurovegas, which will bring in millions of euros in investment and tens of thousands of jobs, will go elsewhere unless the law is changed. And Madrid is definitely listening. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this political dilemma.

HRISTMAS is coming, and the goose is getting fat, the nursery rhyme goes. Sadly, it is not alone: With the threat of imminent bikini exposure receding, my waistband seems to be expanding in equal measure and with it being generally balmy here in Spain an extra layer of insulating winter fat is not strictly necessary. But having once been able to recite the calorie content of every single food item known to man, ‘diet’ is not a foreign word to me. Most diets, along the years, have proven to be short-lived fads. Remember the stewardess breakfast of half a grapefruit, a hard-boiled egg and lashings of strong coffee? Or the cabbage soup diet, which ended when your family

begged you to stop for the sake of fresh air? Personally, I loved the Champagne diet - it all passed in a bit of a haze though, and always failed when the alcohol-induced munchies set in. Then there were those protein shakes which may well work if you can just survive the culinary boredom. The 90’s were ruled by the phenomena of the Atkins diet, which proved efficient in losing weight by tucking into copious amounts of meat, fish and little else. Carbohydrates such as bread and pasta were public enemy number one, though unwelcome side effects of the high protein diet included bad breath, headache, fatigue and nausea. Not being much of a meat eater this one was clearly not for me. Lately, a new programme is on the radar - it’s called the 5/2 diet and everyone who is anyone seems to be singing its praises - including my mother. You can eat normally for five days of the week but for the other two (not consecutive) you are limited to 500 calories. How hard could it be?

For the sake of science and that widening waistline, I gave it a whirl. Day 1: Lean pickings on this day, though it started well, with plenty of resolve and optimism. Alas, by midmorning the idea of a croissant had taken up permanent residency in my mind and by lunchtime I was feeling a little weak, not really appreciating the minimal offering of a small fruit salad. The best thing that can be said for the day was that it finally ended, albeit quite late since sleeping on a rumbling stomach is not easy. Day 2: Aha! A normal day although the 5/2 inventors’ idea of a normal day is 2,000 calories (there are 420 calories in a Starbucks Cinnamon roll alone) so you can’t exactly feast, as may be the tendency - to stockpile for the lean days. And since I have the willpower of a flea, I threw in the proverbial towel at this stage. Seeking redemption from the internet, I was pleased to find that my best solution may actually be

found right under my nose. Earlier this year an extensive survey in Spain, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that the Mediterranean diet is more efficient than a low fat diet in improving health and lowering pesky ailments such as heart disease. I am not sure it will do a lot for the muffin top, but the next bikini season is months away, so in the meantime I shall opt for a combination of age-old procrastination and that lauded Mediterranean diet. Accompanied by a glass of Mallorca’s finest vino tinto, of course.

A formula for pizza

A MATHEMATICIAN has brought food and maths together as she claims she has developed a formula for the perfectly proportioned pizza. Senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield Dr Eugenia Cheng has calculated a ratio to ensure maximum flavour of topping to base. Using ‘d’ as the constant volume of dough and ‘t’ as the constant volume of topping, the formula provides the correct ratio of base to topping. Dr Cheng developed the formula in cooperation with restaurant chain PizzaExpress to find out why some of their pizzas were more popular than others. According to the mathematician, the perfect pizza must be thin to ensure a crispy base and its toppings must be well-spread.

Association Saborea España (Tasting Spain) and the Spanish Institute for Tourism have joined forces to promote Spanish gastronomy. They have invited people to take a picture or make a video telling what they think Spain tastes like. These testimonials will be uploaded to the different Saborea España social networking websites. Weekend trips to several culinary destinations in Spain will be given to the best responses. The starting point of this campaign is a series of testimonials by Spanish chefs including Pedro Subijana, Juan Mari Arzak and Pedro Larumbe. They all say what, in their opinion, Spain tastes like and invite people to do the same. The aim of this campaign is to promote the Spanish gastronomy on both national and international levels. PASTA: Consumption has decreased in Italy.

Less pasta for the Italians ITALIANS are gradually eating less pasta, the Wall Street Journal says. According to the American newspaper, pasta consumption in families dropped from 40 kilos to 31 kilos per year in the past decade. The Wall Street Journal points at international dishes, especially sushi, as the cause behind the Italians’ low appetite for pasta. Trying to keep fit may also be a reason for the decrease.

American global information and measurement company Nielsen claims the number of Italian women aged between 26 and 30 who believe pasta is fattening increased by 26 per cent between 2008 and 2012. Oddly enough, pasta consumption has increased outside the boundaries of Italy. In 1987 in the UK, £53 million (€62 million) worth of pasta was consumed, whereas in 2009 that figure rose to £282 million (€333 million).

After a busy summer the restaurant has removed

some of its tables offering a more intimate and personal experience to diners and allowing Christopher himself to still interact with customers and get their feedback on the cuisine, as well as running the kitchen. Head waiter Sergio is just as friendly, professional and attentive. Having worked at Christopher’s now for seven years he is quickly becoming as much part of the furniture as Christopher himself. All this is topped off by one thing; the food. A carrot and cardamom soup warmed us up nicely as the evening temperatures dropped and with cardamom currently being the third most expensive spice in the world by weight, this was an early testament to the level of quality and dedication Christopher puts in to creating each dish. AST week I said how after my dog Boy Boy (BB) recovered from the life threatening condition of bloat (twisted stomach) his eating habits changed. He started gulping his food down, which can be dangerous and even life-threatening. The faster they eat, the less they chew, which can cause them to choke. When they race through their food they are also swallowing a large amount of air. This can result in something relatively simple but unpleasant like burping or passing gas. This usually occurs with large, deep-chested breeds, but small dogs can suffer too, it can cause a food bloat from the large

amount of air and how much they eat. With food bloat their stomachs have not twisted yet, but the chances of that happening while they are bloated with food/air is greatly increased. This is life threatening and can cause serious damage to the stomach or death. They MUST be seen immediately by your veterinarian, there is NO home remedy. Any time your dog looks bloated or suddenly ‘fatter.’ they should be seen immediately by the vet, since x-rays are needed for diagnosis. Bloated belly, walking hunched over, attempting to vomit (unsuccessfully), listlessness and pacing are the common symptoms seen with bloat. I have now slowed BB down. A good idea is to use a metal nontip food/water bowl. Flip it upside down and spread the food in the ring around the centre. For BB to

EVERY DAY we see adverts and articles persuading us to buy vitamin tablets to supplement vitamin deficient diets. But how much better to eat the vitamins as nature intended them by growing and eating fruit and vegetables known to contain the main vitamins we apparently need for continuous good health or for recovery if ill.

Interestingly, the labels on some bottles of vitamin pills include the note ‘Not intended

as a substitute for a balanced diet’. Further, health authorities

worldwide now recommend that we eat at least five portions of fruit and veg a day for their vitamin and mineral contents. Others emphasise that these are best if fresh and grown ecologically/organically without the use of chemical fertilisers, insecticides and fungicides. And the Slow Food movement recommends that we should try and eat local produce to sustain the local economy.

So let’s do it by growing our own in containers on apartment terraces, in raised beds in small gardens, in the garden or if convenient an allotment/ orchard. The great advantages are that you can focus on growing those fruits and vegetables with the greatest beneficial vitamin and mineral contents and harvest each day just what is required for each meal or day. Gardening World Cup PAUL HERVEY-BROOKES won the gold medal and walked away with the award for the best planting in the show at the 2013 Gardening World Cup. In receiving the title judges described Hervey-Brookes as ‘the young prince of British garden design’. The event is in its fourth year and is held annually in the Dutch themed park of Huis Ten Bosh, located close to Japan’s southern tip, near Nagasaki. Huis Ten Bosch is a residential-style resort modelled on a mediaeval 17th century Dutch town. In English, Huis Ten Bosch means ‘house in the forest’. True to its name the resort has canals

running throughout and is surrounded by greenery and forests. The setting proved perfect for Lim In Chong from Malaysia’s Introspection garden, which also won gold and the top award for its category in the show. The garden took inspiration from the Japanese garden style called Hako Niwa, which takes a very small garden and turns it into an entire world, created to be looked at from several points. The Huis Ten Bosch resort is striving to become the top flower resort in the world and with flowers in full bloom in all seasons throughout the year, it’s quite a spectacular sight.

The property is currently being gutted and will be renovated by renowned Barcelona interior designer Jaime Beristain, whose brief includes designing an artist’s studio for Wood who is rapidly becoming as famous for his art as for his music. Foreign buyers boost the Spanish property market COULD international buyers be the ones lifting Spain out of the property recession and into a new era of a property market fast regaining strength and stability? According to recent figures this could very well be the case. Foreign property investment in Spain rose to €2.83 billion in the first six months of 2013, which is reportedly the largest amount in the last nine years, However, Spanish investment in property outside the country was just €199 million, the lowest in the last 10 years, according to the Central Bank of Spain (BE). According to the latest figures released by BE, the direct investments from foreign buyers in Spain has increased by 16 per cent in the first six months of the

foreign investment is the largest since the start of the economic crisis, the expenditure remains far from

the figure reached in 2003, which in the first half of the year exceeded €3.5 billion, 20 per cent more than now.

Unlike the rise in foreign investment in Spain, Spanish investment elsewhere in the world has fallen considerably since the burst of the property bubble when it stood at €1.8 billion in the first half of 2007. Spain’s continued attractiveness to international investors is evident in the estimate that a further €14 billion is expected to be invested in its property sector in 2014, according to predictions made by Knight Frank. Furthermore, according to statistics from the General Council of Notaries, the number of properties purchased by foreign buyers in Spain increased by 13.6 per cent in the first six months of this year compared to last year’s figures, which amounted to a total of 24,552 transactions.

Second quarter sees price fall in Spain SPAIN was the second country in the European Union where property prices fell the most during the second quarter of 2013. According to a report by Eurostat, prices fell by 10.6 per cent in relation to last year. The European Statistics Office said property prices in the Eurozone decreased an average of 2.2 per cent compared to 2012. Meanwhile, in the European Union as a whole they registered a 1.3 per cent decrease. Croatia tops the list with a drop in prices of 19.7 per cent. Prices grew, however, in Latvia (8.8 per cent), Estonia (8.1 per cent) and Luxemburg (5.1 per cent). In relation to the first quarter of 2013, property prices increased by 0.3 per cent in the Eurozone and by 0.4 per cent in the European Union. In Spain, they fell by 0.8 per cent between April and June compared to the first quarter of the year. Property price indexes analysed by the Eurostat describe the evolution of the residential assets bought by citizens, whether newly constructed or second-hand.

programme to buy new cars. The announcement came after the third phase of the plan came to an end. The fourth phase of the PIVE programme will have an estimated budget of €70 million. The PIVE plan was designed by the Spanish government to boost car sales. Buyers receive a €2,000 discount when buying a new car - the

price of which should not exceed €25,000 - in exchange for presenting a car at least 10 years old. Although the discount is €2,000, the Government only grants €1,000 whereas the remaining €1,000 is provided by car dealers. So far 220,000 people have benefited from the PIVE programme in its three phases. The Minister for Finance Cristobal Montoro has stated this

5 medals for Torrevieja swimmers THERE was a flying start to the new swimming season for Club Natacion Torrevieja. With 355 swimmers from 11 clubs competing in the Fourteenth Trophy Villa de Petrer, there was tough competition. Club Natacion Torrevieja had 20 swimmers compete and they won a total of five medals with many other good swims and personal bests. In the boys’ 100 metres Freestyle the club’s first bronze medal came from Elian Rio Castillo in the Alevin category.

And the medals kept coming with the girls’ 100 metres Freestyle, Paula Garcia winning silver in the Alevin category and Ruth Brassington silver in the Young Absolute group. More medals followed in the 100 metres Butterfly with Piroska Rideg winning gold in the Infantil category. Last to race was Zoe Connolly in the 100 metres Backstroke event, and she won the last medal of the day with silver in the Infantil category with a time that qualifies for the regional competitions. Disputed penalty denies Mazarron

MAZARRON once again faced a team towards the top of the league with the visit of third placed CF Lorca Deportiva but, on this occasion, they were beaten by the only goal of the game, a hotly disputed penalty. It was 25 minutes before Mazarron attempted a goal when Alcaraz’s pinpoint pass found Chema racing clear only to see his shot turned wide by the Lorca keeper. From a Pescao free kick, the ball was half cleared to Cecilio who tried a clever overhead kick which Chema just failed to convert at the far post.

Five minutes before half-time the linesman drew the referee’s attention to the Mazarron bench and one of the substitutes, Salvi, was shown a red card. Two minutes later the Lorca right-back was sent off when he was shown his second yellow card following tackles on Jose Ruben. The only goal of the game came from the penalty spot just after half-time. A Lorca free kick was punched clear by the Mazarron keeper Ruben but the referee awarded a penalty. Santana made no mistake from the spot kick sending Ruben the wrong way.

MONTESINOS played Benejuzar away and to their delight won 3-2. The first 20 minutes saw little action as both sides cancelled each other out; then the game burst into life. The Montesinos keeper saved well from a header as Benejuzar became dominant. On 25 minutes, a Montesinos header

Double win for Ford-Dunn pair THE Ford-Dunn brothers were in dominant form at the fourth round of the Spanish Supermoto championship at Villena, Alicante. The British brothers, who live in Murcia, had been training hard over

the summer to make sure they were in top form for the final rounds of the season, and it showed with both brothers qualifying in second position in their respective classes. Anthony was the first to race in the prestigious SM Open class and secured the overall win for the day by taking a win and two second positions from his three races, beating the reigning Spanish champion Francesca Cucharera and former Spanish champion

Israel Escalera. Next out was older brother Mat who was racing in the SM Master 35 class. Mat finished a close second in his first race and knew that to take the overall win and maintain his championship lead then a win in the second race was the only option. The start of the race was delayed slightly whilst Mat was fed salt on the grid after he suffered leg and arm cramps. An outstanding effort saw him dive down the

THE Castillo de Conesa petanca club in San Miguel entertained a petanca touring side from Wetherby in the UK. The result could not have been closer as the home team won by just one point, the score ended with a seven all draw so it was down to the points and Castillo just took the game by 132 points to Wetherby’s 131. This is Wetherby’s third year of visiting Orihuela Costa and they enjoy it so much they have a waiting list at home to join them each year. The day ended with a presentation whereby Castillo presented Wetherby with a trophy to commemorate the day.
