Hands off our land! Family fights to save garden from developers By Gemma Quinn A FAMILY which has been fighting a controversial land-grab order of their garden had to call the police after two builders started to demolish their perimeter wall. Thirteen years after being told that developers were to take the majority of their land, and six years since they last heard anything, the Wesenauer family are once again facing the fight of their lives. April and Hans bought their finca on the Lomas de Don Juan urbanisation, Campoamor, in 1996, making the move from Austria with their three daughters. “We wanted a peaceful, simple existence, a home to bring up our family,” they said.

April and Hans with their two youngest daughters Kimberley and Love. That peace was shattered when in 2000 they received a letter stating that they were to be the victims of the LRAU land-grab law, which allowed developers to take land for development if they could prove it was for the good of the community. Under the law, the

constructor wanted to take a proportion of their 3,450-square-metre plot. To add insult to injury, they were also demanding €44,000 from the Wesenauers for ‘infrastructure costs’. In 2001, night-time fires were set around the family’s property, destroying the natural

pine forest and clearing the land to make way for construction. What ensued was years of legal battles and letters to every possible higher authority, including the prime minister and the European Union. Since 2007 all had been quiet and the family thought they had won. That was until two men arrived at their property last week and ripped out 60 metres of their perimeter fencing. Finance TOP CHOICE: More Nordic and Russian visitors are arriving through Alicante airport.

Costa Blanca is a top Nordic choice THE Costa Blanca is the top destination for Nordic tourists on mainland Spain. Between January and August this year, 435,087 visitors from Nordic countries passed through Alicante-Elche Airport, with around 32,000 nationals from Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden now regularly working in the province. Last year these tourists spent around €600 million. Only the Canary Islands saw more visitors from these regions. Russians are also choosing the Costa Blanca to escape their cooler climes with around 90,000 of them passing through the airport this year. A Ukrainian agent

based in El Campello said the travel habits of the Russians are not unlike those of the Spanish, with them wanting to enjoy good food and leisure activities and a safe place for their families. As a result of the increase in Russian visitors, Benidorm Tourism Foundation has announced that it will be appearing in a national Russian television programme next month, which attracts an average 155 million viewers. The Provincial Tourism Board is also attending a travel fair in St Petersburg to promote the area to tour operators and the general public.

Half new homes for expats ALICANTE property developers are building 1,400 new homes this year, 100 fewer than in 2012. Antonio Fernandez, President of promoters association PROVIA, said around 50 per cent of thems are for foreigners. “Alicante is the province leading property sales to foreigners.” he

said, adding: “When we go out people ask us where Alicante is, and that is why in the past four months we have visited six countries.” As a result, PROVIA has worked to promote property to investors to create more tourism, jobs and wealth.

SPANISH bodega has a corking chance of being named the European Winery of the Year. The Marqués de Riscal vineyard in La Rioja has been nominated for the prestigious award by the US Wine Enthusiast magazine. Each year, it honours individuals and companies who have had outstanding achievements in the wine world with the Wine Star Awards. The Spanish winery may be mulling over its chance of winning, but it is facing tough competition from Axa Millesimes (France), Joao Portugal Ramos (Portugal), Produttori del Barbaresco (Italy) and Vins de Michel Gassier (France). The winners will no doubt be raising a glass when they are announced in the special Wine Star Award issue of December 3.

And they will be toasting their success when presented with their Wine Star Award trophies at a gala black-tie dinner in New York City on January 27, 2014. Founded in 1858, Marqués de Riscal winery is the oldest in La Rioja and straddles the line between tradition and innovation. The historic cellars feature the latest technology, the hotel aesthetics are stunning and the highly-rated wines are expressive of classic Rioja winemaking. A BUILDER who killed a woman in Torrevieja has been sentenced to 23 years in prison. The builder’s son was with him at the time but fled the scene when the woman was still alive. He was found not guilty. The builder has been ordered to pay €60,000 in compensation to the victim’s family.

Regional road death figures DEATHS on Murcia’s roads increased by a third this summer. Eight people were killed in July and

August, two more than in 2012. In the Valencia Region the number of fatalities in the two

months fell by over 50 per cent compared to 2012 with 13 on the roads, down from 30 in 2012.

Safety calls on black spot FAMILIES of those killed on the railway in Aguamarga, Alicante are calling for the ‘black spot’ to be made safer. They are calling on the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM) to demand a gateway be built preventing people from attempting to cross the track. A petition of 13,000 signatures calling for fencing in the area to prevent further fatal accidents has been raised. Lola Camacho, whose son and his girlfriend died in October 2012 said the problem can be solved with ‘minimal’ investment. She encouraged people to join them at the San Gabriel site on Sunday at 11.30am to hold a five minutes silence for victims.

It’s a long life in Torrevieja THIRTY residents in Torrevieja are over 100 years old. According to updated data from the Census and Statistics Department of the municipality,

there are 22 women and eight men who have passed the milestone age out of the 107,000 registered residents. The eldest, Josefina Blanco, is 107.

Desalination testing gets under way TORREVIEJA’S desalination plant, the largest in Europe, has begun adding freshwater to the La Pedrera lake as it launches its testing phase. The news comes as the plant, built at a cost of €300 million, was criticised in an article in American newspaper The New York Times.

The publication said the work had been “paralysed by the bursting of the housing bubble.” It went on to comment that since the plan was conceived in 2004, energy costs had doubled making water production costly. The plant water reaches the point

of discharge in La Pedrera, through a pumping system from the Torrevieja plant and will be stored in a reservoir located between Bigastro and San Miguel de Salinas to primarily feed the agricultural demands of Murcia and Torrevieja’s golf courses and leisure facilities.

Flu jab drive THE Valencian Health Department has launched its 2013/2014 ’flu vaccination campaign. Around 297,100 jabs are expected to be given in Alicante Province. The six-month campaign always starts in mid-October as the vaccine takes around 15 days to work.

Green line deals with 90 incidents ORIHUELA’S ‘Green Line’ service has managed 90 incidents since it launched last month. The service, set up by the Department of Environment and Urban Sanitation has received 14 emails relating to the waste collection service; 16 about road maintenance; 14 about damage to municipal furniture with the other enquiries relating to insects, pests and rodents, vandalism and traffic lights.

Swimmer drowns A GERMAN woman drowned whilst bathing off the Playa de los Alemnaes beach in La Manga del Mar Menor. A qualified nurse was among those who managed to pull the unconscious 78-year-old from the water but she was unable to be saved. It is believed the woman is likely to have suffered a heart attack whilst in the water.

Orihuela digs deep for funds ORIHUELA has approved payments totalling €300,000. Mayor Monserrate Guillen said specifically the council has passed a bill to provide a contract for computer consumables for various council departments. In the area of grants and subsidies, 71 individual grants have been approved at a total cost of €17,500 including scholarship awards and grants for victims of domestic violence. The Mayor also announced that a lawyer had been appointed to defend the city in a dispute raised by 21 workers within the waste collection and street cleaning department.

Santa Pola rewarded for recycling clothes SANTA POLA has been recognised in the IV Humana Textile Recycling Awards. The municipality received the award for collecting the most discarded textiles in 2012 in Alicante Province, with more than 95 tonnes of used clothing last year from their 28 containers around the area. The clothing is recycled and reused in developing countries, helping to reduce the cost of the resources devoted to new garment production. Humana People to People Foundation is a non-government organisation (NGO) and works on projects in Africa, Latin America and Asia, thanks to the resources obtained through the used textile management process.

Petrol stealing ring dismantled GUARDIA CIVIL have dismantled an illegal ring that allegedly stole diesel from a national oil transport and distribution company. Fifteen people have been arrested in the so-called Carafe Operation including their alleged leader, a Lithuanian man, who is claimed to specialise in this type of theft. According to Guardia Civil, the organisation accessed pipelines by digging three metre holes in difficult access areas. Then they extracted the fuel after carefully perforating the pipes, Guardia Civil added. The necessary tools for these perforations were provided by two men from Huelva, who have also been arrested. The extracted diesel was sold

Last year’s total turnover from storing, transporting and distributing goods ordered on the internet rose to €855 million. An 8 per cent overall increase is predicted for this year.

Fertility rates hit by poor economy THE fertility rate of Spanish women has fallen since the crisis. The highest figure during the last decade was 1.36 children for every Spanish woman of child-bearing age, recorded in 2008 by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The higher rate amongst foreign women in Spain was at its greatest in 2002, with 1.86 children per woman. By 2012 the overall fertility rates for both had fallen to 1.28 and 1.54 respectively. The harder a country’s economy is hit, the greater the decrease in fertility, concluded ‘Focus on Spanish society,’ a report from the Funcas think-tank. In 2011, Spanish women who worked had 1.91 children while unemployed women had 0.80, Funcas found. This was in direct contrast to Germany, Austria and Norway with their generous social benefits for families and children. Germany has a fertility rate of 0.88 for women who work and 2.66 amongst those who do not. Funcas also pointed out that Spain has a high proportion of couples in the 25-49 age group where both work full-time and have children under six. Again, this pattern is not repeated in countries like Gemany or Austria.

AENA spending out of control AENA, Spain’s airport and air navigation operator, spends €863,200 a year on 83 cars for executives. It is one of Spain’s most unprofitable state-owned companies, owing €12.57 billion by the end of 2012. Ten per cent of its staff were made redundant last year. “AENA is outside public control,” said Pere Macias, an MP for CiU in the central

parliament in Madrid. “Its executives act as though they are employed by a private company,” he declared. Last year, prompted by adverse publicity, the company cancelled its Financial Director’s five-year car hire contract. The luxury vehicle with leather upholstery and a silk-lined roof would have cost the company €70,422.

Spanish held back as I in 5 fall below most basic reading level SPAIN is near the bottom of the list in a new survey of literacy and numeracy levels amongst adults in developed countries. That means the country, along with Italy, could be being held back in the fight to emerge from economic hardship. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Survey of Adult Skills measured the skills of 16 to 65-year-olds across 24 countries and looked at how literacy, numeracy and problem-solving is used at work. The results reveal the challenges some major economies face in boosting their skills levels. In reading, more than one in five adults in Italy (27.7 per cent), Spain (27.5 per cent) and France (21.6 per cent) perform at or below the most basic level, compared with one in 20 Japanese (4.9 per cent) and one in 10 Finns (10.6 per cent). Almost one in three adults in Italy (31.7 per cent), Spain (30.6 per cent) and the USA (28.7 per cent) perform at or below the most basic level of numeracy, compared to around one in 10 in Japan (8.2 per cent), Finland (12.8 per cent) and the Czech Republic (12.8 per cent). The Survey also reveals the extent of the ‘digital divide,’ with millions failing to master

even simple computer skills, such as using a computer mouse. This ranges from nearly one in four adults in Italy, Korea, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Spain to one in 14 adults in the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. It provides clear evidence of how developing and using skills improves employment prospects and quality of life as well as boosting economic growth. Investors say yes INVESTORS have given a vote of confidence to Spain by snapping up 31-year government bonds. It was Spain’s first new long term bond since 2009. IT was more than three times oversubscribed, with the Spanish treasury receiving €10 and the Treasury received €10 billion in offers, more than three times what it had planned to sell, half from foreign investors. Spain will pay around 5.2 per cent interest, a huge improvement on the 7 per cent for 10 year bonds it was forced to pay last year. Spain’s financial problems are easing as the European Central Bank has backed the euro and markets are flooded with liquidity by the USA and Japan.

Sticking to his guns LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

MAY appear to be thick-skinned and emotionally uncaring when accused of ranting and racism, but I can tell you I most certainly am not. Particularly as far as the latter is concerned. Many of my past correspondents have really hit hard with their nasty accusations, including the occasional death threat. The reason I have stuck to my guns over the years, is not only because I believed I was right, but also because I have been strengthened by the amount of positive support I have received. Support which has far outweighed the dissent. Over the years, literally hundreds of readers have expressed their agreement with my views and have congratulated both me and the Euro Weekly News for having the courage to speak out when they themselves, fearing recriminations, have not been able to do so. I am also of the firm belief that the pen is far mightier than the sword. With the refreshing open discussions that have emerged this week, not only have all those dissenters been put firmly in their place, but also any violent alternatives have at least been put on the back burner for a while. The extremely ‘better late than never’ SKY News poll this week came up with the fact that

Personally, I like to hope this is only the beginning of a whole new approach to what is still a growing and extremely worrying problem. In many ways the immigrants have only themselves to blame. There is a wonderful old probably British - saying that you should not bite

the hand that feeds you. In many ways this is exactly what thousands of immigrants have done. Far from integrating with their generous hosts, they have gone out of their way to recreate their own societies, even to forming segregated areas where they endeavour to reproduce the culture and customs of the countries they have actually run away from! Many companies, particularly cab firms, are manned and run exclusively by immigrants. This can only have been achieved by practising racism, something which they are very quick to whine about when they consider it is being instigated by locals, but in fact, they themselves can often be the worst offenders of all. The burka is a racist insult to the British people. It is a completely alien outfit, specifically designed to segregate and separate these people from the culture of Britain. Always in black (not pink or blue or some less intimidating colour, you notice!) it is nothing to do with religion and should be banned completely, except perhaps for specific occasional festivals. The list goes on. The British people have adapted to foreigners long enough. It’s high time they were shown respect, gratitude and reciprocated adaptation from those who wish to live among them.

More Families Pay More UK M Inheritance Tax any British expatriates remain liable to UK inheritance tax, where the tax take has been rising over recent years. If you are a British national it is important to understand how this tax, and any changes, will affect your heirs. If you live or own assets in Spain you also need to keep up to date with Spanish succession tax. It applies if the assets are located in Spain (regardless of residence of beneficiary), or if the beneficiary is resident in Spain (worldwide assets). UK inheritance tax is charged on your worldwide estate if you are UK domiciled (UK assets only, if not). The tax rate is 40%, above a tax free threshold. Your spouse is generally exempt (though not always). Crucially, it is based on domicile rather than residence, a much more permanent concept which does not change simply because you left the UK. The basic rule is that you are domiciled in the country you regard as your homeland. Many British expatriates therefore remain liable for

The tax rate is 40% and has remained unchanged since the late 1980s. A lower 36% rate applies if you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity. The tax free threshold, or ‘nil rate band,’ does change, and affects how many families are caught in the inheritance tax net and how much tax is paid. It used to rise each year with inflation, but has

been frozen at £325,000 since 2009 as part of austerity measures. The March Budget confirmed it would remain frozen until at least 2018. We have warned that freezing the threshold is effectively a tax rise. Now, analysis released by Saffery Champness reveals that HM Revenue & Customs’ tax take increased by 9% in just two years since 2009. (Data is not yet available for the 2011-12 tax year.) The number of estates paying this tax increased by almost 6%. With the freeze scheduled to continue until 2018, more families will be pulled into the inheritance tax net, and tax bills will rise. Rising property prices and asset values rise will also impact on inheritance tax bills. The £325,000 threshold is per individual. Any used portion can

be carried forward and used by the second spouse/civil partner. It is not all bad news. It is often possible to mitigate or avoid this tax with careful planning and professional advice. As an expatriate you may be able to change your domicile. This is hard, but not impossible if you intend to live in Spain permanently and cut ties with the UK. It is complex and professional guidance is essential. HMRC can deem you to be domiciled in the UK even if you consider that you are not - this would have unexpected tax consequences for your heirs. Even if you do change your domicile, you will still be deemed to be UK domiciled for the next three years. Also if you or your spouse return to the UK in future, you are likely

to immediately regain your UK domicile status, plunging you right back into the inheritance tax net. Changing your domicile is not the only way to escape UK inheritance tax. You should seek expert advice from a specialist who is au fait with domicile issues, and how UK inheritance tax and Spanish succession tax interact, so they can recommend the best solutions for your situation. FTER more years than I care to remember, I still recall the elbow in the ribs. “Get up, son. Give the lady your seat.” When I became less of a callow youth, I would volunteer my bus seat without a poke in the ribs. It was, and still is, my second nature to keep open a door for an approaching lady. I help elderly people on or off public transport or I take their bags whilst they alight. I am not sure who gets the warmest glow, them or me. Civility towards others was drummed into me but I confess there have been lapses. Etiquette might have been the

first French word I learnt. As I helped a new member of the staff with her coat, I sensed her body ‘blushing.’ The same happened when I held the car door open for her. She afterwards told me that no one had ever done that for her before. Jayne was in her late 20s. A little before my time true gentlemen got to their feet when a woman arrived in the room. I do recall that when passing a woman a man might doff his cap or at least touch its brim. Conversational good manners have disappeared. It seems that everyone agrees with the principle, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Do not expect it to be other than fine words. Today there seems to be a streak of almost medieval intolerance shown towards those of conflicting view. Unwillingness

to simply accept an opinion often leads to a verbal brawl. During the 1930s and earlier, mining villages and similar working class communities across England had their debating societies. Each speaker was accorded civility and debaters’ opinions were respected. One suspects that fear of a punch-up or a visit from ‘Plod’ would discourage such freedom of expression these days.

According to one survey, many young people have never written a handwritten letter. It is inconceivable that they might pen a few expressions of gratitude to someone who had given them a gift, shown a kindness, attended a function or perhaps accommodated them for a few days. Recently our group was disappointed to find a Sunday dinner restaurant fully booked. Stuff happens but given the discourteous brush-off, we will

not be visiting a second time. Many in public service are sadly lacking in people skills. Ironically, it is not the youngsters who tend to be bad mannered; the worst offenders are those old enough to know better. There are of course many exceptions to the rule, but the incivilities of an intolerant or rude minority spoil everyone’s day. Perhaps it is our fault for tolerating the intolerance of others. I no longer do so.

Duran Lleida: ‘Brussels will not bend the rules for Cataluña’ Cassandra Nash

URAN LLEIDA shot down in flames the separatists’ belief that Brussels would bend the rules to keep Cataluña within the fold. “It’s impossible to say that Europe will save us a place. The other half, Convergencia Democratica de Catalunya is headed by Artur Mas, the regional president. Duran Lleida would settle for leaving conflict to one side, he said recently, and happily accept wider self-government powers. Would Artur Mas settle for this? Possibly, but he has schlepped so far along the

Old loyalties SOMEBODY tried to blow up Senen Pousa who is a Franco-

supporter and proud of it. More accurately somebody tried to blow up the town hall in Beade (Orense). The council is controlled by the PP and Pousa has been mayor for more than 40 years. No-one was hurt and the building remained intact although badly damaged. “They’re not going to change the way I think with bombs,” he said afterwards. Pousa, a Galician who has never hidden his respect and admiration for the dead dictator, another Galician, claims that noone in the party has ever tried to bring him into line. Pousa went even further by claiming “there are many people in the PP who breathe the same air, but say nothing.” It is not an old man like Pousa who endangers democracy. On the contrary, he demonstrates that democracy can absorb and digest eccentrics. The real danger comes from the people who use bombs to make a political point.

FROZEN fruit and vegetables may be healthier than fresh produce found in supermarkets. This is the conclusion of two independent studies carried out by Leatherhead Food Research and the

University of Chester. Researchers found more Vitamin C, polyphenols, anthocyanins, lutein and betacarotene in frozen fruit and vegetables. Their fresh counterparts, however, scored worse on these components, which are said to be good in

preventing cancer. The explanation may lie in the length of time that passes from when the produce is picked until it is eaten. Fresh produce loses some of the nutrients when stored in the supermarket and at home, while frozen vegetables retain their vitamins.

WO weeks ago I was in Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium to see Gareth Bale make his first home appearance against neighbours Getafe. But like the 70,000 supporters, I was disappointed when it was announced he would not be playing. I could see the headline: “€91million Bale out.” Everyone’s attention thus turned to last weekend’s home derby against Atletico Madrid. But when the game

started there was still no sign of the young man from Wales. Whatever manager Carlo Ancelotti had in mind, Atletico’s Diego Costa’s 12th minute goal forced him to change his tactics at half time. So after a summer full of intrigue and drawn out negotiations, which finally resulted in Gareth Bale moving from White Hart Lane to the Bernabeu, the 24-year-old Welshman, carrying the burden of being the world’s most expensive player, came off the bench to the roar of 80,000 spectators. The three players therefore have a combined gross annual income of €60 million, which in the real world would pay for 3,000 workers on €20,000 a year. Can one man who can kick a ball and promote brand names, be worth 1,000 workers? Just like Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney and co, Bale’s value is more about wearing a number 11 white jersey than for talent on the playing field. Last weekend’s game could have been described as Azerbaijan versus Fly Emirates. Sponsors and TV companies now make the rules.

I’m often asked about my novels. About how much of me and my personal experience goes into them. To give a brief but balanced answer: ‘yes and no.’ Well, I did say brief! Yes, because, inevitably, those you meet do

influence you. No, because the characters eventually created are composites. As for authors who sell in the millions, do they portray themselves as they are or

would like to be? Take the late Stieg Larsson (The Millennium Trilogy). His protagonist, Blomquist, is described as a goodlooking, campaign magazine journalist attractive to women. Larsson was also a campaign magazine journalist. As for his looks, peep at his image on any back cover. Go figure! The names for characters have to be handled with real care, too. Take names like Beckham, Blair or Ramsay. Give any one to a quiet, self-effacing character and all the connotations take over. And in your mind’s eye, all you’ll see is Beckham/ Blair/ Ramsay as, in psychologists’ jargon, feelings of transference take over.

Which brings me on to that old chestnut: writer’s block. Here I’m reminded of (Raymond) Chandler’s Law: “When in doubt, have a man come through a door with a gun in his hand.” Good grief! And, finally, what about the actual writing? Grammar and so on. Which reminds me. Once one of my readers graciously offered to proofread my manuscript and pinpoint any errors in punctuation, spelling and style. Of course i spel perffecttly and theres never no punktuation, erors! so her job was like, :- easy. GARDENS have brightened up after the rains No matter how carefully people water during the summer it’s amazing what a few showers of real penetrating rain does to a garden. Moisture gets to all roots, surrounding soil does not dry out to

suck away moisture intended for plants, and all leaves get a good wash. Flower buds waiting for ideal warm humid conditions burst into flower and stay out for long periods. As a result gardens are great places to wander round, do essential maintenance in, plant up bulbs shrubs and trees, plant up autumn/over wintering vegetables and entertain one’s friends. Paella entertaining time and book of the month There can be major confusion about what comprises a genuine Valencian paella and this needs correcting. This is especially important as the dish is one of the

major international emblems of Spain and most of the ingredients can be grown ecologically in everyone’s gardens. Earlier this year as the confusion exists I compiled the book ‘Your personal guide to making Authentic Valencian Paellas’ which is now being translated to Spanish at the request of local Spaniards. As the weather was warm and dry and many vegetables were readily available on Valencia Day, October 9, I cooked a paella for an international group of friends using as many ingredients as possible from the garden and following the ingredient Turn to page 68

The ingredients available were the last of the tomatoes, butter beans, haricot beans, Perona runner beans, globe artichokes, rabbit and chicken meat, a little from our autumn crocuses, home produced olive oil, garlic, thyme, parsley and the red peppers and rosemary to rest on the top while the rice was cooking. This year the rice was from the local Valencian rice fields as there were major germination problems this year with our mini rice field in an old bath. The end result was much appreciated and my good friend Jurgen Schadeberg, the famous photographer who took the renowned prison cell return photos of Nelson Mandela, lunched with me. Incidentally if you live on the Costa Blanca, Jurgen has an exhibition of a selection of his photoraphs

in the Gandia Grau campus of the Polytechnic University of Valencia until the October 31. On this last day one of his films will be shown focusing on African Music. Desserts included a deliciously ripe final melon harvested at the beginning of September and the last of the figs cooked in sweet wine and anis liquor. Planting vegetables this month During the next few weeks a wide variety of vegetable plantlets can be planted up in a veggie plot, raised beds, growing tables or buildersâ€™ buckets. After useful autumn rains we are planting/sowing beetroots, broad beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflowers, dandelions, parsnips, peas, red cabbages, celery, garlic, leeks, lettuces, onions, spinach, radishes and rocket. Ford celebrates assembly line centenary FORD MOTOR COMPANY has celebrated the 100th anniversary of the moving assembly line designed under the leadership of Henry Ford. The moving assembly line, regarded as the world’s greatest contribution to modern manufacturing, was first used at the Ford Highland Park plant in Michigan. The new process simplified the assembly of the Ford Model T’s 3,000 parts by breaking it into 84 distinct steps performed by groups of workers as a rope pulled the vehicle chassis

down the line. This dropped the assembly time for a single vehicle from 12 hours to about 90 minutes. As a consequence, Ford was able to drop the price of the Model T from $850, the equivalent to $20,080 today, to $300 ($7,087). This, considering the average annual income at the time in the US was of approximately $15,000, made the vehicle affordable to the masses. Eventually, a Model T was built every 24 seconds, selling more than 15 million

worldwide by 1927, according to the manufacturer’s data. The success of this new approach quickly spread worldwide in the automotive industry, with other companies using the assembly line in their production. The assembly line, together with Ford’s safety procedures, led to the coinage of the term ‘Fordism’ to refer to an economic and social system based on a standardised form of mass production.
