La Nucia tax reduction not to be rubbished LA NUCIA Town Hall is reducing rubbish collection charges next year. The motion was approved at the last plenary meeting and will bring a 50 per cent
reduction on the present charge, which was increased this year. This is a direct result of good municipal budgeting, the town hall said, having closed 2012’s
accounts with a positive balance of €5.1 million compared with €861,000 in 2011. “The town hall is committed to reducing more taxes as the
economy improves,” he continued. The reduction applies to householders and businesses alike who will pay €45 per property in 2014.

FOUR traffic cameras have been installed in Benidorm’s Rincon de Loix and Levante areas. Primarily destined to supervise traffic they will also serve as a crime deterrent with signs warning of their presence, announced mayor Agustin Navarro. The cameras are located at three Calle Gerona intersections and another between Calles Lepanto and Mallorca. All are in the so-called English Zone, with its high incidence of petty crime. Navarro and representatives from the
British community visited the Policia Local’s control centre to see the system at work. While agreeing that the cameras will contribute to public safety, British businessowners would rather see a greater police presence, they said.. Increased police patrols would discourage the criminals and pickpockets who rob and dupe British tourists, a spokesman for the British Benidorm association claimed. They proliferate around Mercaloix, where a new scam has been detected as phony

BARS and pubs in Alicante city defended the growing Saturday ‘tardeo’ fashion. For the uninitiated, ‘el tardeo’ is a new Alicante phenomenon, as residents and visitors go out for drinks and tapas on Saturday afternoons. Residents, accustomed in the past to quiet afternoons and deserted streets in the city centre, are clamouring for the council to take steps. ‘El tardeo’
involves too much noise, too much litter and too many altercations, they claim. The Locales de Ocio pub and bar owners’ association disagrees. The practice brings up to 3,000 people into the city each weekend, said Lalo Diez, the association’s spokesman. They are ready to spend and have rescued many businesses, creating employment for
‘thousands,’ most of them young people. “This is an age group, don’t forget, with 60 per cent unemployment,” he said. Diez called on the city hall not to be taken in by those who ‘demonise’ one of the city’s few economic sectors that actually function. “Here, like it or not, this is what we live on, in a tourist city like ours.”

Vulnerable to floods TORRENTIAL rain demonstrates year after year that Marina Alta is increasingly vulnerable to flooding. Storm drains and channelling for streams and rivers are insufficient, claimed Jorge Olcina, professor of Regional Geographic Analysis at Alicante Uiversity. Construction in Calpe, Javea and at the Girona river-mouth now blocks their natural exits, he warned. The Calpe salt beds are surrounded by an urbanised barrier, while Javea’s old marsh (the Primer Muntanyar) is totally built-up. Construction has also obliterated what was once the delta of the Girona river. The area’s infrastructure should be designed for a worst-case scenario, Olcina said during a speech on climate change in Calpe.

International Day in cosmopolitan Alfaz ALFAZ DEL PI recently celebrated International Day. It was the sixth edition and attended by many more than the 2,000 people originally expected. Consuls from Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Luxembourg and Uruguay were, together with
Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Soler, Other Nationalities councillor Genoveva Tent and AMICS del Ayuntamiento councillor Jose Luis Giner. Residents from almost 100 countries figure on Alfaz’s municipal register, where they now outnumber the Spanish.
This was more than apparent on International Day, as the multicultural population enjoyed visiting the stalls set up by the international collectives participating in the event. There was live music, food, drink - and a great deal of international enjoyment.

Breton transferred to prison in Villena JOSE BRETON, accused of murdering his son and daughter, has been moved to Villena prison. Breton is still on remand, awaiting
confirmation of a 40-year prison sentence for killing six-year-old Ruth and two-year-old Jose. The remand period, due to expire on October
21, was extended to 20 years by the same Cordoba that convicted Breton last July. The decision to move him was prompted by his
inability to adapt to prison life, sources said. He will be housed in the isolation wing, subject to the regime usually applied to
dangerous prisoners or those with adaptation problems. Breton will therefore eat alone and remain in his cell for 22 hours a day.

A lot of dough for 20 cents THE 20-cent ‘barra’ has arrived in Alcoy. Jose Navarro’s bakeries began producing cut-price bread in Torrente, Quart de Poblet and Gandia (Valencia) last September. He met bitter opposition from fellow bakers who accused him of illegally selling the bread below cost price. He in turn accused them of hounding him, as he received weekly visits from labour and tax inspectors. They examined everything from work contracts to the flour used for the bread but business boomed regardless. The Alcoy shop serves 1,000 customers a day, according to spokesman Jose Perales. “It’s cheaper to bake traditional bread than freeze it. The secret is organisation,” he said. “The shops open from 6am until 9pm and we make bread all day.” Raw materials for each ‘barra’ cost only 7 cents, he revealed.

Valencia’s fiesta THE Valencia Community had the day off yesterday, October 9. This is Valencia Day, when cities, towns and villages celebrate the retaking of Valencia city from the Moors by Jaime I in 1238. In Villajoyosa the day started with a civic procession through the town centre, with speeches, brass bands, and traditional dancing. The Villajoyosa and Valencian Community flags were carried by Pablo Sbertoli and Nils Eric Egeberg. Sbertoli is director of Hacienda del Sol, a Norwegian residence for the disabled which opened in Villajoyosa 41 years ago. Nils Eric Egeberg is the man behind the Aula Gastronomica-Hostal El Mercat, another Norwegian-backed residence that opened in March. The choice of nationality was deliberate, said councillor Xaro Escrig. “We want to thank the Norwegian community for its love of La Vila and choosing our town for their holidays or as a second

KILIMANJARO: Javea climbers get to the top.
From Montgo to Kilimanjaro ELEVEN members of the Centro Excursionista de Xabia climbed Mount Kilimanjaro last August. The club chose Tanzania as the Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year. There were preliminary sessions beforehand in the Sierra Nevada in Andalucia, but most of
the training was carried out on nearby Montgo. Members scaled its 753 metres two or three times a week in all weather. The climbers will be describing their expedition, illustrated by photos, in a talk at Javea’s Casa de Cultura. Open to all, it will be held at 9pm on October 18.

TLC needed for two ‘affectionate’ victims A HORSE and donkey were recently abandoned on the Calpe to Moraira road. They were unloaded from a white off-road vehicle towing a horsebox trailer at around 8.30pm. The driver left quickly after tethering the animals to a lamppost, said a resident who witnessed the entire episode. Landfill under scrutiny ELCHE’S Miguel Hernandez University (UMH) is assessing emissions from Campello’s landfill site for an Alicante judge. The court scrutiny stems from a private lawsuit by a resident dissatisfied with the regional government’s refusal to close Les Canyades. The UMH warned last year that “dangerous substances” were present and asked to investigate inside the plant but did not recommend its closure. Residents who claim that Les Canyades is a health risk welcomed the move.

Alicante slaughter recalled IN May 1938, the Italian air force bombed Alicante City’s food market. At least 300 people died and 1,000 were injured. Spanish author Victorio Sanchez, now in his 70s, narrowly escaped death during that raid. The writer, who is also president of the non-profit organisation ‘Icas Marenostrum,’ decided to commission a painting based on the bombing from Alcoy artist Manuel Solbes
Arjona. The choice was fitting, as the Italian air force carried out seven bombing raids on Alcoy between September 1938 and February 1939, killing 64 people. Solbes Arjona’s 4.80 x 2.80 metre picture can be seen in Alcoy’s Hotel Reconquista until October 22. “The object of this painting is to remind the world that Italy has never apologised for the crimes committed by
Mussolini’s fascist air force in Alicante,” Sanchez told the Euro
Weekly News. He now intends to display the picture in
Italy as a reminder of the “cowardly” bombings, he said.
RIVER ALGAR: Development has been halted.
Algar repayment setback THERE was little disappointment when Andrés Ballester’s Puentes de Algar development was dropped. Many Alteanos believed the 5,775 homes planned for the banks of the River Algar would change the semi-rural outskirts of the town forever. The Supreme Court (TS) then reversed
an earlier High Court decision in May and halted the development. But the decision came as a blow to the town hall when in July an Alicante court ordered it to pay almost €12 million to Ballester’s company, Altea Futura. The town hall is appealing against the ruling and intends to exhaust every option.

Ikea agreement being probed THE judge investigating the ‘Rabasa case’ will also examine Alicante council’s negotiations with Ikea. The Swedish chain intends to open a centre in the city’s Rabasa area where developer Enrique Ortiz planned a 13,500home development. This was last May after the courts upheld several appeals against the project.
Now the chief judge of the Alicante City district, Juan Carlos Ceron, has agreed to investigate yet another, this time from the IU party. He will now examine IU’s allegations that mayor Sonia Castedo and her predecessor Luis Diaz Alper engineered the Ikea agreement in order to push through Ortiz’s macro-development plan.

Wildlife centre frees its charges
NINE birds of prey have returned to the skies. They were released in the Sierra Helada national park after receiving care at the Santa Faz wildlife recuperation centre near Alicante City. They included an eagleowl discovered at Benidorm’s watertreatment plant “more dead than alive,” his rescuers said.
Five kestrels and two tawny owls were released at the same time, most of them taken to the centre after falling from their nests as fledglings. “After a recuperation period that varies according to age they are fully equipped to return to the wild,” explained Alfredo Gonzalez, regional director general for the Environment.

Plea for IBI reduction DENIA residents are calling for a reduction in rates this year. The Town Hall’s pledge to freeze local taxes in 2014 and reduce them by 10 per cent in 2015 has not convinced local neighbourhood associations. “It should not be necessary to wait for an election year for reductions,” claimed spokesman Jaime Fermin Ribes. Denia’s property register has been revised, bringing in an increase in income from IBI rates. “The Montgo area alone will bring in another €1 million,” Ribes said. Rates could easily be reduced next year instead of 2015.
Gas produces coastal shakes GAS injected into an offshore oil well has caused earth tremors in the Gulf of Valencia. More than 300 were recorded since work began and were particularly felt on the Castellon coast. “There appears to be a direct relation,” admitted Jose Manuel Soria, the central government’s minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism. The stored natural gas could be the cause of the seismic activity, Soria said, but stressed that there is still no scientific proof. “The experts will decide that,” he told an Onda Cero interviewer. The €1.2 billion Castor Project,
backed by the European Investment Bank, includes a pipeline to the Spanish mainland from an underwater storage plant. Up to 1.3 billion cubic metres of gas will be stored in the depleted oil reservoir, 1.75 kilometres below the surface. Owner-operator Escal UGS began extracting seawater from the reservoir last month and injected base gas to cushion future supplies. Activity should have resumed but has been suspended. All Castor activities have been halted, Soria confirmed, “until it’s known exactly what is happening.”
6 injured in retirement home blaze SIX people were injured in a fire at an Alicante city retirement home. Six people at the residence in the Juan XXIII district were later admitted to hospital with
smoke inhalation. The fire began when one of the residents removed his oxygen mask to light a cigarette. The oxygen ignited, the bedding
caught fire and flames spread to the rest of his room on the seventh floor. The 200 residents and 30 staff members had to be evacuated while the
fire was extinguished. They returned shortly afterwards, apart from seven people in rooms affected by the fire who were transferred to another residence.

Woodland destroyed in Granadella fire APPROXIMATELY 300 people were temporarily evacuated from their homes during a forest fire in Javea. More than 20,000 square metres of Javea woodland were destroyed by the blaze in the Granadella district, revealed Public Safety councillor Juan Ortala. The fire broke out in Calle Passarell and residents later reported having seen sparks coming from a nearby medium-tension electricity tower. The fire spread rapidly owing to the worst possible weather conditions: high temperatures of more than 30 degrees centigrade and the Poniente west wind.
All local emergency services turned out to deal with the fire, including the Balcon al Mar volunteer firemen, fire brigades from Denia and Benidorm, a fire-extinction plane and three helicopters. The fire was under control in just over three hours. The terrace of a Calle Passarell villa became an advanced command post for the emergency services, who later thanked its occupants for their cooperation. “It was likely that the electricity tower was responsible for the fire,” Ortala said. When asked to comment, the Iberdrola electricity company said that the cause of the fire “is still unknown.”

Mayor pregnant SONIA CASTEDO, Alicante City mayor, is two months pregnant. She has handed over to deputy Mayor Andres Llorens on doctors’ orders. New teaching year THE new teaching year (the 4th) by the volunteer teaching group, which is teaching English to the unemployed in Jave, with the support of the CREAMA employment agency, has started. It now has 31 teachers involved, having started the initiative with six. They teach basic, intermediate and advanced levels to 99 students at the adult education college in the old town. In a new initiative the group has started teaching English classes in the evenings to the local police force. So far 35, about half the force, have registered to take the placement exam.

Craft fair returns THE craft market, relocated in Plaza de los Musicos, returns to La Nucia this Sunday. From 10am until 2pm around 15 stallholders will be selling their own hand-made articles, made with the love and attention so often missing from mass-produced goods. The Plaza de los Musicos is in the
centre of La Nucia, easily spotted to the right when approaching from Benidorm. Stalls vary from week to week, as some stallholders visit other fairs while other craftspeople work on replacing what they sell each week. By Costa Blanca South reporter Gemma Quinn GARDEN waste overspill in Orihuela Costa is now ‘bursting at the seams.’ That’s according to political party C.L.A.R.O. which is questioning Orihuela City Hall’s new ‘environmentalists’ dream solution to the problem of garden waste.’ Instead of it being transported for disposal to Crevillente 50 kilometres away it should be collected and transported to San Pedro del Pinatar for it to be crushed and transformed into pellets for ecological energy production or fertiliser and sold. However, C.L.A.R.O. visited the site in San Pedro. It is closed and garden waste has been accumulating for weeks without being processed, claimed the independent political party. President of C.L.A.R.O., Bob Houliston said: “The consequence is that Orihuela Costa garden waste has to be transported once again to Crevillente, 50 costly kilometres away. But since the council is not willing to pay for the transport of all the garden waste created in Orihuela Costa, much of it is allowed to accumulate in the streets for weeks.” Councillor for the Coast Martina Scheurer said waste had stopped being taken to San Pedro because the site refused to accept it as ordinary rubbish was mixed in with the garden waste.

Laptop ruse discovered THE Guardia Civil arrested a gang who smuggled cocaine inside laptop batteries. The investigation began last December after police at Cologne airport in Germany seized laptops destined for an address in Benissa. They found 900 grammes of cocaine inside the batteries. Two more consignments were sent from Colombia and Venezuela, again to the same Benissa address. In all, five kilos of cocaine were smuggled in this fashion. Prado Museum sustaining losses THE Prado Museum in Madrid sustained losses of €1.09 million in 2012. According to the accounts published in the Official State Gazette, income has fallen mainly because the State is paying 25.4 per cent less to the Museum and sponsorships have fallen by 26.67 per cent. Meanwhile, expenses have only fallen by 0.14 per cent. Debtors’ accounts rose by 10.84 per cent, meaning it has had to use money from the treasury. Current liabilities have fallen by 16.65 per cent because at the end of 2011, the last payments on shares of the capital stock of the National Prado Museum were pending, as were bills from building repairs that year. The Museum has €38.4 million in its accounts for this year, but the General State Budget has increased the amount it will provide for the Museum by 1.7 per cent for 2014. The aim is to increase the accounts to €41.1 million by 2016. At the end of December 2012, the Prado had 528 employees. This year, the Museum is expecting the number of visitors to fall by 25 per cent, meaning takings will fall by €2 million.

A matter of money LIVING in Spain, we use euros almost every day, but do we know where they come from? The European Central Bank is the only EU administration which has the authority to issue notes which can then be issued by them or by the national Central Banks, such as the Bank of Spain. Most of the notes issued by the Bank of Spain are made in the National Factory of Currency and Stamps, while the rest is received from other national banks. Coins are issued by each of the different countries in the Eurozone and have one side which is the same throughout, and another which is exclusive to each country. They can all be used throughout the Eurozone and are delivered to the Bank of Spain to be put into circulation.

You and the Law in Spain By David Searl
A. The use of surveillance cameras in Spain is regulated by the LOPD, Ley Organica de Protection de Datos, the
Organic Law of Data Protection, or LOPD, which went into effect in 1999. As originally written, the law was indeed very strict on the use of cameras. It required that consent be obtained from each person filmed, for example. This is simply not practical. Now the law is enforced by the Agencia de Protección de Datos, the APD for short. Their Directive 1/2006 provides that an easily seen notice of the camera’s presence will be sufficient. A private citizen may place surveillance cameras in his garden to ensure his security from theft. A Community of Property Owners may place cameras in the garage, for example. A supermarket usually has cameras watching the merchandise. The distinction between public and private is not important. The law now concentrates on what use is made of the recorded images. When you apply to the APD for a permit, you must identify the person in charge of keeping the images and they cannot be kept for more than a month in most cases.

We just want to earn an honest living BAR OWNERS - mainly British who are willing to pay their taxes and licensing fees, are being persecuted by the police in Calahonda (Malaga) and forced to turn off any background music. Also not allowed are TV commentaries for football, golf, tennis or any other sport no matter how quiet it is, even when it cannot be heard outside the establishment. On top of that they are being forced to take down bar signs that are not hanging over the road or footpath, and are no danger to anyone. As for any other entertainment like singers, karaoke and guitarists, forget it! Tourists are constantly asking “where is the entertainment” and have to be told “sorry there is none.” Some Spanish bars seem to be able to do what they please, while the English bars in the same street are forced to close. The Costa del Sol is well known to be the main holiday resort in the world for the British but if something is not done soon, and honest working Brits are not allowed to run their business legally, Spain will find itself in a much deeper recession than it already is. State help SO this is what Spain has come to. It relies on volunteers and charity to look after its elderly. The news that the Red Cross helped 24,000 senior citizens across Alicante province in just six months (Costa Blanca South, Issue 1474) reflects well on the charity, but poorly on the government. These people should not have to rely on volunteers and charity.

Good value WITH reference to your editorial on Benidorm bus fares being the most expensive in Spain (Costa Blanca North Issue 1473). The spokesman failed to mention that if people buy a prepaid card the bus fare comes down by about 15 per cent. I am all in favour of the tourist paying more as it means we get a well maintained service all year round with clean buses running at decent intervals. Having said that I would like to see them run for about an hour later at night as they do seem to terminate rather early. As a comparison we do get cheap transport in relation to the UK, for example London charge €1.65 for a single journey on an

Huge turnout I WOULD like to say thank you for the superb article in your newspaper a couple of weeks ago, headed Breakfast with a purpose, (Almeria, Issue 1471) which was so much appreciated. We had a huge turnout; the
Bay Bistro was absolutely full. People’s lives were wonderfully touched by the two testimonies we had, and one lady asked Jesus into her life, what we call ‘born again.’ Another came and said she was so excited at all that she had heard, and took away the book The Happiest People on Earth to read, which was written by the Founder of the FGBMFI, Demos Shakarian. The couple who gave their testimonies, Judy Slater and her husband Gavin, are holding an International Concert in the Convento Victoria in Vera Town, tomorrow (Friday) at 8.30pm and the entrance is free. Missed out ON September 21 the Anglo/Spanish Integration Day took place in Huercal Overa and was attended by hundreds of people, both Spanish and English. However, your paper did not publish anything about the event even though it was well advertised. Given the amount of hard work that both the Spanish and British people put into the day, it was extremely disappointing. The Walk for Life was on the same day and was worthy of an article, so why not this event? I am not the only person to feel disgruntled by this omission. Simple steps for an easier life TAKING a few simple steps can help British expatriates to prepare for the difficulties of living in Spain or avoid them altogether, said Ambassador Giles Paxman. Checking passport expiry dates, telling visitors from the UK what to get before they travel and visiting the local town hall to find out about local services are all simple measures that will help Britons in Spain to avoid running into time-consuming problems later, he said. “If you’re living here you can prepare for the sort of difficulties you might face so that if those difficulties do occur, they remain simply difficulties and don’t become dramas,” he said in an interview with expatriate television station Viva TV, which can also be seen on YouTube. “First of all check the validity of your passport. Greedy band of callous cronies... LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

HIS week, for the first time in years, I found myself watching the awful, intelligence insulting TV abomination ‘X Fracture.’ I tuned out to this pile of utter garbage some years ago, when, not only did I find it less than vaguely entertaining, but felt it was actually edging dangerously close to child abuse. Relenting to the pleas of my own dynamic duo however, and believing one has to at least review a situation before re-condemning it, I succumbed to another once over. Well, in my opinion, it is now even worse. It appears to me that the ‘judges’ of this cruel media rubbish have been exposed to mediocrity and untalented individuals for so long, their standards have sunk to a point of such pathetic banality, they couldn’t judge a small town pie bake. ‘That was truly amazin,’ ‘You really made that song your own’; they crow to a young pimply wannabe, who has just managed to flatten and completely
destroy a much loved and revered pop classic ‘Well done, you’re a star’ gushes Louis Walsh, eyes flashing at a young pretty male singer who would go skint croaking for pennies on a suburban street corner. As for the Osbourne woman; frankly she has to be one of the least qualified people ever to be elected a judge.All this woman has ever done in the realms of show business is tried to enter the Guinness book of records for the most widely acclaimed adaption of plastic implants and married a junkie pop singer! What on earth qualifies her to be on this bone-jarring jury of court jesters? The show’s format itself has also actually managed to raise its levels of cruelty even further. These sad, often painfully young competitors are now placed in a situation of winning their round, but not actually being secure in their achievement. During the early heats, six of them are told how wonderful they are and elected to take their place on the half dozen seats provided. Once these are filled, the judges then turn to the remaining entrants. Should they decide (and they always do) that a later performance also merits a seat; they then consider which of the already selected entrants will be ousted to
make room for their new proffered choice. This gives the cameras yet another excuse to probe the tortured faces of these young people, while they await the agonising drawn out decision to snatch away what has been awarded them only a short time before. It’s all a pathetic and dangerous disgrace. How one of these young hopefuls has not committed suicide to date I really cannot understand. Rant away… LEAPY, I agree entirely with your comments (rants) about this burka business. I spent eight-and-ahalf years in Saudi and sort of enjoyed it. All of your comments are spot on, the UK really has to get its act in gear fast. My greatest concern is just how do you stop it? Once you let the genie (extremist) out of the bottle you can never get them back in. Who knows what sort of world our grandchildren will inhabit. Not one I would want to live in. PART from the PP and the PSC (Cataluña’s PSOE) all Catalan political parties voted to ask the central government for an independence referendum. The Cataluña Generalitat has three months to complete the task. If Madrid baulks, there will be a referendum anyway. Should this happen, Rajoy would appeal to the Tribunal Constitucional and the vote would be halted. This could be what an increasingly isolated Artur Mas, the Catalan premier, wants. He would be able to turn to voters and say he had done his best and receive some breathing space until the 2016 elections. An unofficial plebiscite instead of a referendum will then give voice to

Negative MARIANO RAJOY has not given an interview for months, but Bloomberg TV in New York looked good on paper. Presumably he expected to explain his economic strategies. Instead his interviewer dragged up the PP’s ex-treasurer Luis Barcenas and slush fund claims. Rajoy could hardly reply, yet again, that he has said all there is to say about Barcenas. The interviewer pressed him as no one presses him here but got little in return as Rajoy launched into inscrutable Gallego mode, answering everything except the question asked. “You can’t prove what’s not true,” he protested. Unfortunately for Rajoy, sceptical interviewers and weary voters are less prepared to swallow double negatives.

Europe, the divided continent Imagine what a truly united democratic Europe could do Mike Walsh Mike Walsh. Based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.

HE disintegration of the Soviet Union liberated Europe, or did it? It seemed that Europe was united for the first time since the overthrow of Tsarist Russia and the capture of Europe by the Bolsheviks. Sadly, the concept of a united Europe is still a dream. The liberation of Europe in 1945 was a cruel self-deception. For millions of Europeans the victors’ oppression was to last a further 45 years. In 1989 - 1991, we sat glued to our television sets as the war ended; the Berlin Wall collapsed and millions partied. Today the European Union is made up of 28 nations. However, there are 50 countries in continental Europe. Travel

Yet today half the peoples of one Europe wishing to visit the other half are obliged to negotiate an expensive soul-destroying paper chase application as fearsome as was the Berlin Wall. Back then, the USSR was a near bankrupt gathering of disparate countries run by a self-elected leadership. Tell me, can you give me a better description of the European Union?
Twenty-seven unelected commissioners (commissars) make the European Union’s important decisions. Jose Manuel Barroso is the unelected President of the European Commission. He loftily declares that ‘nation states are dangerous if they are excessively democratic.’ The president of the European Council is unelected Herman van Rompuy. Everyone in Brussels and Strasbourg knows that if the European Union (EU) applied to join itself it would be turned down for being undemocratic. Who could have foreseen Russia and a score of Eastern countries being based on democratic principles whilst the EU morphs into a debt-burdened banker’s plantation? If despite the enormous costs involved the reunification of Germany can create Europe’s most powerful nation, imagine what a truly united democratic Europe could do.

OR Diane Greenfield, aged 70, the best thing about Spain was actually deciding to move here to enjoy her retirement in Quesada (Alicante). Sadly the worst thing was when she lost her husband last April. Now he has passed away Diane said the worst thing about Spain is the public transport, or rather the lack of: “I don’t drive and there just aren’t any buses. I have to walk everywhere, there is no service from the urbanisations. Luckily we were not cut off completely.” But for Jessica Steele, 63, form Fuengirola the weather has been the best thing of Spain. “I have lived here three years now, and the sunshine has kept a smile on my face! Worst thing has been not knowing the language when I first arrived, but that is slowly coming along.”

Techniques for stressful days WE all have those days, when nothing seems to be going your way. Anger, sadness, frustration and anxiety all build up at once and it can be difficult to deal with in a healthy, balanced manner.
According to various studies, in these instances there are small calming techniques that only take a minute or two but work to lower the heart rate and provide some small stress relief. Chewing gum – A study conducted by Cardiff University’s Centre for Occupational and Health Psychology found evidence to suggest that chewing gum can often prevent the effect of acute stress. Laugh – Researchers in
numerous studies have found that laughter significantly reduces stress hormones in the body, so take five minutes to read or watch something funny and lift your mood. Tea – Drink a good old fashioned British cuppa. Studies have revealed that people who drink tea have lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood. Therefore drinking tea regularly could prevent high stress levels.
A NEW study suggests exercise outside work could help prevent high blood pressure, but being physically active in work doesn’t seem to provide the same benefit. New findings from the American Heart Association (AHA) suggest the more physical activity people get, the more they are protected from developing high blood pressure. Researchers analysed the findings of a total of 13 studies that examined the effects of physical activity on blood pressure of nearly 137,000 people in the United States, Europe and East Asia who initially had healthy blood pressure readings. In the study’s follow-up periods ranging from two to 45 years, more
than 15,600 of the participants were found to have developed high blood pressure. The study found that, compared to people who exercised for a period of less than one hour a week during their time-off, the risk of developing high blood pressure was 11 per cent lower for those who exercised one to three hours per week. It was 19 per cent lower for those who did more than four hours of recreational exercise a week, according to the study published in the Hypertension journal. The findings of the studies suggest that the more exercise completed outside the workplace, the lower the risk of subjects developing high blood pressure.

THE Japanese have invented pills to make us look more attractive. The country is known for its innovation and technological developments in the motor vehicle and electronics sector. But perhaps its companies are lesser known for leading research in the biomedical and nutraceutical (nutritional and pharmecaeutical) industries, which has lead them to develop the ‘pretty pills’. There are some brands already making waves. Here are just a few that are available: Zytaze: Works to extend and improve Botox. It contains a combination of enzymes and zinc and makes the muscleparalysing effects of the botulism derivative more effective. Go Away, Gray: Ingested on a daily basis, these pills break down the naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide in your body so that your hair does not turn gray. CANNABIS: Tests on mice have shown that smoking marihuana could significantly reduce the likelihood of skin cancer.
Smoking to prevent skin cancer A JAPANESE study suggests that marihuana possesses elements that could prevent skin cancer. The study, published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, tested cannaboids found within the plant. It determined they “displayed potent anti-inflammatory activity and marked inhibition of tumour promotion in two-stage mouse skin carcinogenesis.”
This means the drug’s key component works as a preventative measure against the disease. The study found that these components reduced the likelihood of skin cancer in mice by 90 per cent. As a result of these findings a U.S Biotech company is now developing a line of anti-ageing cosmetics based on ‘synthetic cannaboids´
found in animal immune systems, meaning the drug itself is not used, but the effect is mirrored, according to cosmeticdesigns.com. Although using cannaboids is uncommon in beauty treatments, the leaves of the hemp plant itself have been widely used in beauty treatments and products for their anti-ageing and moisturising properties for some time.

Hopping flour power CANADIAN students have developed a sustainable food source by making flour from insects. Dubbed Flour Power, the team from McGill University, Montreal, plans to farm grasshoppers in poor areas of countries including Mexico, Thailand and Kenya and
turn them into flour for bread and other foods, providing a sustainable, yearround source of food as well as providing extra business for local farmers. Their ideas have now won the 2013 Hult Prize and the five students received $1million (â‚Ź734,000).

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.
W
ITH a shortage of biologically or organically grown vegetables available in most Spanish hypermarkets, local stores, local markets and at farm gates, compared to the UK, Holland and Germany, it’s very worthwhile to grow your own. You don’t need much space and no previous
experience is required. Although we used to have a large vegetable plot growing some 50 varieties of vegetables a year and harvesting for not only ourselves but neighbours and a Michelin starred restaurant, we now grow on a smaller a scale to match our ages and daily needs, and at the same time experiment with novel small growing methods. We do this for several reasons. Firstly sprouting seeds such as mung beans, alfalfa, fenugreek, radish, lentils, chick peas and sunflowers are best grown on a small scale and eaten fresh so we normally have our automatic watering sprouter continuously in operation in
a corner of the kitchen. Secondly we enjoy wild mushrooms, setas in Spanish, but being unsure of what can be collected and eaten from the wooded mountainsides in inland valleys we grow our own. Many garden centres and agricultural cooperatives now sell specially prepared sacks impregnated with the appropriate spores. All we have to do is put the small sacks in the garage, tear six to eight holes in the plastic cover, and kilos of setas appear within a few weeks. Half to be eaten fresh and the others dried in a couple of hours in our small vegetable and herb dryer. Turn to Page 60

FOREIGN investors injected €1.17 million in property assets (residential, commercial or land) during the second quarter of 2013 in Spain. This is a 53.7 per cent increase in relation to the first three months of the year, and a 32.9 per cent increase in the year-over-year growth rate. This means the number of houses bought by non-resident foreign people increased, despite the VAT increase in force since January 1. The interest in the Spanish property market has thus increased in relation to the first six months of 2012, when the doubts about Spain’s solvency made foreign investments drop.

Spain paves the way for non-EU property investors with new residency rules The long-anticipated legislation granting non-EU nationals automatic Spanish residency via property investments has now officially been made law. After having been approved by the Spanish Parliament, the law has been officially published in the state Gazette (BOE), opening the door to thousands of potential investors. The new legislation states that investors from outside the European Union who spend €500,000 or more on

Property prices may be stabilising THE average cost per square metre of flats in Spain now stands at €1,762. This is according to the Fotocasa and IESE report which shows that for the third quarter of the year the average market price has remained steady. It is the first time in two years that no quarterly price drop has been recorded. The dearest prices are shown in the most expensive locations in the districts of Madrid and Barcelona - where prices are close to €5,000 per square metre - while in the municipalities of Fuensalida, in the province of Toledo and Ontinyent and Almoradí in Alicante, the prices are closer to €900 per square metre.

The majority of homes are without energy certificates The cost of an energy certificate prevents the majority of home owners from having an EPC carried out on their property.
AROUND 100,000 homes in Spain received the official energy performance certificates (EPCs) this year. However, it is estimated that around 94 per cent of the properties for sale or rent have yet to have the EPC as demanded by law. The new law affects an estimated one-anda-half-million properties which are currently on the sale or rental market. The certificates include a series of recommendations aimed at reducing the energy consumption of a property. It seems the cost of obtaining the certificate is putting people off, but it is now illegal to rent or sell without it and reduced rates are being charged. When getting an EPC carried out it is recommended to use an accredited expert and technician to ensure the price quoted includes not only the inspection but also the full paperwork, so the home owner is issued with the certificate. SHOCKING: A startling percentage of homes still lack energy certificates despite recent changes in legislation making the lack of one illegal.

Aimed for the demanding driver for whom size is an issue, the concept features elements not always associated with smaller cars.It has been created in Europe at Kia’s Frankfurt Desgin Studio with European tastes in mind. Saying goodbye to Volkswagen’s Kombi AFTER more than six decades, Kombi, the iconic hippie van from Volkswagen is saying goodbye to the markets. The Volkswagen plant in Sao Bernardo do Campo in Brazil, the only one remaining in the world producing this model, officially the type 2, announced it will no longer do so from December this year. A new Brazilian transport safety regulation has forced the production stoppage of the Beetlebased model, still used by many in the South American country. But before giving the last farewell to the iconic van, Volkswagen will launch a special edition limited of 1,200 units. The Last Edition Kombi will thus put an official end to a model that was first launched in Germany in 1950. Closely related to the hippie movement, the Kombi van has

PETER JENKINS proved he is the ‘must have’ player to be drawn with in Levante’s annual better ball pairs competition for the Captain’s Salver. Traditionally, a random draw pairs lower and higher handicap members together - and for the second time in three years Peter has been part of the winning combination, this time finishing at the head of 22 teams. This was the second consecutive year Levante’s Captain Rob Westlands hosted the competition and the turnout of 51 members and guests was a true reflection of his popularity within the group. BBC lions fight with tigers IN the northern league the Benitachell Bowls Club Lions started the season with a good win against a strong BBC Tigers side. Tigers played again later in the week against BBC Jaguars and also had a clean sweep with wins on all four rinks. The Benitachell Bowls Club also proudly hosted the early rounds of the Northern Section of the Valencian Mixed Triples and Mixed Fours Championships and had three teams of Federated bowlers in both events. The only team to make the finals was Maggie and Tony Lawley with Bert McLean in the Triples, who were subsequently knocked out by Finca Guila. Also as part of the Club’s 25th
