Benidorm bus fares amongst the priciest in Spain BENIDORM bus fares are amongst the most expensive in Spain. An ordinary ticket costs €1.50, said the local branch of the Esquerra Unida (EU) political party. In contrast this would be charged at €1.40 in Alicante city, €1.25 in Gijon (Asturias), €1.20 in Granada, €1.05 in Murcia and Oviedo and €1 in both Fuengirola and Santiago de Compostela. WHERE does the world’s best Valencian style paella come from? The answer is Cuenca. The International Valencian Paella Competition was held recently in Sueca (Valencia) where Julian Garcia of the Posada Real in Santa Maria de Campo Rus (Cuenca) produced ‘the best paella in the world.’

Second place went to Casa Picanterra in Cullera, while third prize went to the Cambao Restaurant in Miami. Just two Valencian restaurants were amongst the unplaced finalists. All contestants had to use the classic ingredients of chicken, rabbit, snails, two types of dried beans, green beans, tomatoes, garlic,

saffron, colouring, olive oil, salt and water. The consistency of the rice, flavour, colour and appearance of the finished dish were all taken into account, plus the ‘soccarat.’ These are the almost burnt grains that stick to the bottom of the pan and which, connoisseurs claim, are the best part of all.

OST of Spain’s approximately 1.5 million university students are now starting the new academic year. In Spain, there are almost 80 universities (29 of them private) with almost 240 campuses. The oldest which is still in operation is Salamanca University. Founded in 1134, it was given the Royal charter of foundation by King Alfonso IX in 1218. It is the third oldest European university in continuous operation, behind Bologna, Oxford and La Sorbonne. It was the first European institution to receive the formal title of ‘University’ as such; it was granted by King Alfonso X in 1254 and recognised by Pope Alexander IV in 1255. Sign on your padron

LA NUCIA is encouraging foreign residents to register on the padron. Paul Rodwell, the UK consul in Alicante, backs the scheme. According to consulate estimates, approximately 5,000 Britons currently live in La Nucia although only 2,320 are registered. All British citizens should register,

Mr Rodwell stressed during a recent visit. Inclusion on the padron is a vital first step towards accessing education, health care and citizen attention. Allocations for police, social services, street cleaning and a host of other services are also based on the number of registered

inhabitants. The more residents who register the more public services will improve, Rodwell said. The latest official figures show that on January 1, 2012 La Nucia’s registered population of 19,135 entitled the town to approximately €3.3 million in funding from the central government.

THAT last summer was hot is undeniable but was it so rainy? According to Spain’s Met office, the Agencia Estatal de Meteorologia, (AEMET) it was. When the ‘hydrological year’ draws to a close on September 30, the province will have had 17 per cent more rain than usual in the previous 12 months. In fact, two thirds of last summer’s rain fell between August 25 and 30 August, AEMET revealed. The Marina Alta was particularly hard-hit by rain over the last 12 months, with some weather stations recording a total of 1,000 litres per square metre. Further south it was a different story, with less than 300 litres at Alicante Airport, Elche, Rojales, Orihuela and Crevillente.

Crane to the rescue for injured woman FIREMEN had to remove a window from an Elche woman’s home to get her to hospital. The 38-year-old woman fell and broke her hip, hospital sources explained afterwards. She managed to ring a family

member who sent the SAMU and DYA emergency services to her home. On arrival medics sedated the woman, who was in considerable pain, and immobilised her to prevent

complications to the fracture. As they were unable to take the stretcher via the lift or staircase, they requested help and a crane lorry from the fire brigade. Firemen first removed an

apartment window so the stretcher could be put on the crane. It was then lowered to the street where, two hours later, it was greeted with applause from neighbours.

Marihuana found growing in Benissa CLANDESTINE marihuana plantations have become a regular Alicante province news feature. It was recently Benissa’s turn following the arrest of a 35-year-old Spanish man. The Guardia Civil seized more than 300 marihuana plants camouflaged with green netting at his property in the rural Pinos area. This ruse was not enough to deceive investigators who only days before had confiscated marihuana plants grown inside the town itself. Illicit plantations are proliferating in the Marina Alta as well as on the coast and in inland areas. In the last six months investigators have located indoor and exterior ‘nurseries’ in Javea as well as Benitachell’s Poble Nou. They all pale into insignificance beside the Lliber discovery last year. Here Guardia Civil officers discovered 10,000 marihuana plants growing in 16 polytunnels - the largest plantation ever found in Europe.

Taxi driver arrested for suspected Benidorm rape A BENIDORM taxi-driver has been arrested and charged with a rape committed five years ago. The accused has been remanded in custody by a Villajoyosa judge. The driver is said to have picked up a female tourist outside a Calle Mallorca pub in August 2008. He then allegedly drove her to a deserted spot in La Cala de Finestrat and raped her. The results of DNA retrieved from the victim’s clothes and received in July

were decisive, said Guardia Civil investigators. So too was an identification parade for which the victim was able to identify the man without hesitation, investigators added. The man was not on record for sex offences, they also revealed. The driver only worked for them temporarily during the 2008 high season and had not worked for them since then, emphasised Benidorm’s Radio Taxi group.

The rape was “an atrocity,” said local drivers who described the Benidorm taxi sector as

“safe and peaceful.” At all times they and the taxi firm had collaborated closely with the Guardia Civil.

Gest-Kal XXI requested a creditors’ meeting to rescind the agreement, town hall sources revealed. The contract to run the L’Illa sports complex for 10 years was awarded last April in exchange for an annual €15,000 payment. Gest-Kal XXI also agreed to invest €160,000 in a new gym and equipment, paying for upkeep and other services.

A MEMBER of the infamous Veselin Vlahovic gang that murdered and raped during the Bosnian civil war has been imprisoned for two years. He and others led by the ‘Monster of Grbavica’ were arrested in Altea in March 2010

for a chain of Marina Baja robberies. Vlahovic, a Montenegrin regarded in Altea as “quiet and polite,” was wanted for genocide, rape, torture and illegal detention committed during the Bosnian war. He was later extradited but his henchmen are now

serving sentences in Spanish prisons. The last to face justice was finally tracked down after his associates were tried and sentenced last February. All accepted two-year terms following a deal between the defence and the Public Prosecutor.

Second Norwegian centre ALTEA’S Town Council has approved Oslo City Hall’s application to build a residential centre in Montemolar. Technical and legal reports from all departments were favourable, said Economy councillor Pedro Barber. When the project was declared of Community Interest in 2007 the previous council, then led by Andres Ripoll, did not object to this

designation or appeal against it, Barber pointed out. The Costa Blanca is the secondmost important destination for Norwegian tourists and Altea’s Norwegian community has grown more than any other in recent years, he continued. The €5.6 million project will bring direct and indirect employment to

the town, the councillor said. There would be jobs at the residence and others arising from services provided by Altea businesses. “This will help to reactivate our economy and commerce,” Barber predicted. The Montemolar centre will be the town’s second Norwegian residence, following the centre built by Baerum Town Hall in 2002.

TWO elderly Benissa men died as they made wine. The Criminal Investigation unit is probing the incident, but there is little doubt the deaths were accidental, police said.

SNIFFER dogs at Alicante bus station recently detected three separate consignments of hashish. More than two kilos were discovered within a seven-day period on buses covering routes from Algeciras and Malaga to Barcelona. One passenger had more than 500 grammes camouflaged inside a Playstation. Another was a 32year-old Moroccan from Algeciras. Having been singled out by the dogs, he was searched and found with 850 grammes of hashish strapped to his legs. He had intended to sell it in Castellon, he admitted. The third detainee was a Spanish man, 42, on the Algeciras to Barcelona line, who was found with 700 grammes of hashish.

The men, aged 69 and 72, died as they pressed grapes at a property in La Verdica that belonged to one of them. They were later found by a relative.

Two rescued off coast of Alicante after yacht sinks TWO people were rescued off Cabo de las Huertas after their yacht began to sink. The crew of two - a Spaniard from Santa Pola and a Dutch national - were making for Ibiza when the boat sprang a leak. They transferred to a life raft and launched a radio distress beacon to alert the Maritime Rescue service. Rapid-response vessel Salvamar Polaris was mobilised and the two men, who were ‘nervous’ but in good health, were taken to Alicante port. BRITONS in Spain, and Mallorca in particular, are bracing themselves for another hit to their image with the return of ITV 2’s Magaluf Weekender. Last year, series one gave an insight into what young Britons get up to whilst on holiday abroad, and attracted one million viewers aged between 16 and 24-years-old. And much of it was not a pretty sight. The series unashamedly played up to the image of drunken Brits abroad. Drunken party antics seemed to be the main ingredients of the ‘reality show’ and more of the same is planned. But perhaps even more shocking than the bad behaviour on show are Facebook comments about the first series. In them many young adults, who profess ‘to know Magaluf well’ say the series is ‘tame.’ Real life in the socalled ‘party capital’ they claim, is much more ‘exciting.’

Taking a Walk for Life

THE now annual cancer charity walk in Arboleas, the Walk for Life saw a massive turnout on Saturday afternoon. The afternoon event started at the town hall square with live music from the Doghouse Band and a welcome speech followed by Reverend Pauline, who covers the Andalucia region, saying a prayer before a minute’s silence. The tape to officially get the walk under way was cut by Spanish lady Claudia, accompanied by her daughter, on behalf of Claudia’s husband who is terminally ill with cancer. Rebecca Long accompanied by her husband Louis also helped in the cutting of the tape. This brave lady, like everyone that has been affected by cancer had her own story to tell and was full of praise for the Walk for Life charity. Rebecca said: “As well as my husband Louis, Walk for Life has been brilliant. They helped us out with a translation service and even paid our diesel money when we were travelling to Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City twice a week for chemotherapy.”

Cookie monster’s money tips! IF a child is confronted with a tasty marshmallow, what do they do? Eat it or save it for later? This simple scenario is the basis of a very famous psychological experiment to test a child’s self-control. The results point to how a child may fair financially in the future. In 1972, 1,000 children were studied - each child was sat in a chair and one delicious marshmallow was placed in front of them. The children were told: “You can have one marshmallow now, or two in 10 minutes, if you wait.” Most of the children tested wolfed down the little pillow of sweetness within moments. Only one third of the children waited the 10 minutes to receive two marshmallows. The experiment proved just how hard it is for children to have self-control and be able to see benefits in the future. But teaching children selfcontrol is vital according to the

Self-control and learning to save at a young age is extremely important and, luckily for parents, Sesame Street is here to help. Over its four decades, the children’s programme has taught tiny tots a lot of valuable lessons. Now Sesame Street friends Elmo, Grover and Cookie Monster are teaching children self-control in order to save money too. In one episode the furry puppet Elmo explains to kids the importance of savings. Elmo explains that when we want something, we can’t have it immediately - that we have to build towards getting it. He uses the example of a ‘stupendous ball’ he wants that costs $5. Throughout the episode Elmo has to do small jobs to earn $5 over some time. If the self-control of our threeyear-old selves really does predict financial prosperity in the future, then I suggest all parents ensure that their children listen carefully to what the Cookie Monster has to say!

Inditex still growing despite narrowing profit margins INDITEX, the world’s biggest clothing retailer, has seen sales grow, even though profit growth has slowed. The owner of the Zara chain signalled it was not immune to the depressed European markets, where cut price competition combined with a cold spring and foreign currency fluctuations combined to drive down profit margins after a particularly strong 2012. But analysts said the Spanish group’s model of rapidly-changing fashion ranges remained among the best in the industry, and noted fast-growing Asian markets had overtaken Spain as its biggest source of sales for the first time. “We continue to believe Inditex will deliver double digit earnings growth in the

Inditex, which owns eight brands including upmarket Massimo Dutti and teen label Bershka, said net profit rose 1 per cent to €951 million in the six months to July, reported Reuters. That beat analysts’

average forecast of €926 million, helped by control of costs and a lower tax rate. The gross margin slipped to 58.6 per cent of sales versus 59.6 per cent the year before. However, Inditex said it expected gross margins to end the year broadly stable - 50 basis points higher or lower

Retail sales fell in Spain for the 37th straight month in July and the country still accounts for 19.3 per cent of Inditex’s sales, albeit down from 21.5 per cent a year ago. However, the group said sales in Asia, Australia and Africa had overtaken Spain to account for 21.7 per cent of the total, up from 20.2 per cent a year earlier. HIGH olive oil prices after last year’s droughtstricken crop could leave a smile on farmers’ faces. Prices for premium oils are up a third from last year. With this year’s Spanish crop expected to yield about 1.4m tonnes it could mean a financial fillip for growers.

Spain’s debt continues to grow despite cutbacks WHILE a return to economic growth is on the cards, Spain’s national debt continued to rise in June. The country owes an eye-watering €942.8 billion according to the Spanish Central Bank. That is the equivalent of 92.2 per cent of the country’s economic output for a year. The bank forecasts, if trends continue, that it could reach 100 per cent within three years. Despite austerity measures that have seen cuts in public services across the board, debt has grown 15 per cent in a year. The figure broke the target of 91.4 per cent set by the Spanish government. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s aim to reduce public spending by €150 billion between 2012 and 2014, is proving a tough target with unemployment of 26 per cent reducing the tax take and pushing up spending on benefits.

Banks face ‘haircut’ BANKS owed billions by insolvent frozen fish company Pescanova are being asked to take a 70 to 75 per cent ‘haircut.’ A KPMG audit showed the company had a debt of €3.6 billion, making it one of the country’s biggest bankruptcies. Most of that is believed to be owed to the Sabadell, Popular, Caixabank and NovaGalicia banks. New chairman Juan Manuel Urgoiti was due to meet bank representatives. It is thought he wants them to accept losses as part of a plan to relaunch the firm. But he might have his work cut out as, in an independent action, accounting firm

PwC is drawing up a viability plan to save the company. Measures could include a fire sale of assets and an exchange of debt for shares. That would give the banks control of the company. Whether the banks want to get into the frozen fish industry is another question. Urgoiti is a former chairman of Banco Gallego and sits on the board of directors at success story Inditex, owners of Zara clothing retailers. Former chairman Manuel Fernandez de Sousa and nine former executives face a string of charges in the criminal courts. Several are alleged to have made millions of euros fraudulently.

Just who do you think you are kidding ? INTERESTING to read in the finance pages (Issue 1472) that Telefonica (or Movistar) bosses think they can stop losing customers. They must be kidding! They had better think again unless they change their customer service. Telefonica rebranded as Movistar largely because it had such a dire reputation for service. If my experience is anything to go by nothing has changed. I have now moved to a smaller provider after a long list of delays and problems with Movistar and am very happy to have done so. My new phone company actually seems to want my custom. It is cheaper and offers far better service. So if Movistar, which lost 248,000 customers in March, really wants to turn things around they should sack their head of customer services and employ someone who actually cares for their clients. Justice questions TWO stories attracted my attention (Costa del Sol Issue 1472). Firstly, Assault revenge. “A man, 26, was arrested in Malaga for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman, 29. Her partner, 35, was arrested for beating the attacker unconscious.” Should the partner of the sexually assaulted lady just have stood by and done nothing to protect/defend his lady companion? Secondly, Bazaar attack. “Four people were arrested in Malaga for allegedly attacking the owner of a Chinese bazaar. The victim’s husband was also arrested for hitting them with a stick.” Should he have just stood by and done nothing to protect/defend his wife? Money monsters I AGREE with CG that the ruination of Africa is charity (Letters Issue 1470). Some of these charities seem to be money-making ‘monsters.’ A few months ago I managed to get in touch with two of these so called charities, I complained about their use of young children on the TV adverts. The answer I got was that they were ‘paid actors,’ this referred to a little lad standing in a cot with tears in his eyes. Can you believe it? Then a few weeks later they began showing an advert with a baby a few months old, could that be another actor? They are sick making money the way they are doing. I think they should be educating the populations about birth control! NW Comares (Malaga).

why the police are set on stopping them. I will try! They most probably do not pay their dues, social or taxes. Many of the goods are counterfeit and some are most probably dangerous (small loose bits dangerous to children, lead paint etc) and are often shoddy and sub-standard. The source of the goods comes from cheap (sweat shop) labour, and most probably from black (drugs/ arms/laundered) money. They are also taking money away from legitimate traders and shops. When the police arrive they pack up and run away because they know they are breaking the law and selling fake goods. If you cannot afford designer goods why buy sub-standard ones that fall to bits? Go to the normal shops and buy something really comparable. I know

Looky out! AFTER visiting Torrox Costa market we took some friends visiting from the UK to a favourite Chinese restaurant on the front for a menu del dia. For the next couple of hours we were pestered every 10 to 15 minutes by hawkers with no respect for our privacy. They were not deterred with a wave of no thanks or even a ‘no gracias’ so our conversations or meal had to be interrupted to, as politely as possible, tell them to go away. As the restaurant owners, who I believe have the right to stop them entering their premises and can be fined if they are caught selling there, seem to turn a blind eye, maybe they are on a percentage. We felt like sitting targets. We would like to be able to have an internationally recognised sign on the table that says no hawkers and be left to enjoy the meal and company. We now seriously think twice about returning to any restaurant where we have been pestered. Diane Clark (By email)

IN response to the letter from Charles Roasad (Gibraltar suffered as well, Issue 1472) on the subject of the award for gallantry for Gibraltar. l find his comparison between the way the citizens of Gibraltar and Malta were managed in some cases amusing. I’m sure the citizens of Malta would have been delighted to have been sent to Jamaica or Madeira. Unfortunately nobody asked them. As for being bombed by the Italians that’s a joke - they used to drop their load in the sea and be home before tea. Ask any Maltese, they loved being bombed by the Italians. Burka controversies are a ploy to bring in Islamic message

HAT no one seems to realise is that all this burka business is simply yet another ploy to bring the Islamic ‘message’ into the front rooms of the ‘infidels.’ Another weapon in the hands of those who would take over our culture and ultimately our democratic freedom. A dozen or so years back no one had even heard of Islam, let alone be interested enough to discuss its pros and cons. Now it’s everywhere. You can’t pick up a newspaper without some Islamic follower spouting off about being ‘offended’ by some action taken by the follower of a different faith, generally Christian. As a Christian country, the UK populace has to be made completely aware that our culture is totally unacceptable to these people, irrespective of how many ‘moderates’ declare otherwise. To these extremists we are the evil face of the non-believer and the ultimate goal of their branch of

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT Islam is to rid the world of all who don’t totally encompass the teachings of the prophet Mohamed. We have to make some kind of stand against those who would take away our freedom and plunge our free thinking, often tragically naive populace back into the dark ages. The lessons are there for the taking. All we have to do is take a leaf out

of many Islamic countries’ book. Some don’t allow Christian churches to be erected. Therefore we curb the building of mosques, before there’s one on every street. They don’t allow anyone, even in private, to worship anything other than Islam. We therefore have to firmly discourage the taking over of whole streets by praying congregations. We have to let these people know that halal meat can never be obligatory and pork will always be on the school menu. We must bring home loud and clear that the Union Jack is the flag of our country and it will be flown

over every school in the land if so desired. We must endeavour to prevent ‘no go’ areas and make it absolutely clear that Sharia law is not the law of our land and never will be. Most of all we must stop being petrified to cause offence to these people. So they’re easily ‘offended.’ So what? What are they going to do if we ban the burka in all public institutions (which we should). Declare war? In Islamic countries I’ve seen Western women smacked on their bare arms and calves with pretty hefty sticks wielded by ‘religious police.’ I’m not condoning the physical removal of women’s face masks, but if something isn’t done, I can see the only course of action being one of violence. Do you really want to see our suburbs resembling those of the Syrians? For all our sakes, and especially our children, please God let it never come to that. Keep the faith. The land of my fathers Male voice choirs and the Welsh flag are two things I love

I

HAVE nothing against the Welsh. After all, as man and boy, I was blissfully happy in the land of someone else’s father. However, not everyone agrees. Their most famous lyricist, Dylan Thomas once said, “Land of my fathers? They are welcome to it.” The Welsh comedian, Max Boyce, did not share his sentiments. Tongue in cheek he reminded the English that if an iron was run over Wales then his land would be bigger than England once the wrinkles (mountains) were ironed flat. The Welsh sense of humour tends to be sardonic. What do you call an Englishman in the knockout stages of the World Cup? The referee. There is delicious rivalry. What do you call a Welshman with several sheep? A pimp. Their brand of humour can be enlightening. I recall using a lane approaching a Welsh farm. The notice said, ‘Slow! Free Range Children.’ Noted for their sullen insularity the Welsh are notoriously anti-stranger. I thought it was because they thought me English. No, my son, who hails from Wrexham, said:

An early form of ‘white flight’, the then indigenous locals looked upon the new English as smelly heathens. I am not sure if the enmity between the Welsh and the English is genuine or teasing. I think the latter, for in truth I was very happy in Wales. They can be quirky, but who isn’t? One thing I do love of theirs - two actually. Their male voice choirs that bring a lump to my throat. OMEN on the Costa Blanca, whilst deeply in love with their partners, didn’t have to think too long about what annoyed them most. “My list is far too long,” joked housewife Linda Williams, aged 27, from Dolores. Whilst saying what was most annoying was often his lack of help around the house and with the children, she did get him to change his ways, even if she did have to nag a little. “If he helps me I get it done quicker so we have more time together just the two of us.” Lisa Yates from urbanisation Oasis, who runs a family restaurant, has not been quite so successful in getting her Spanish partner to change his annoying characteristics. One of her biggest gripes is his getting a clean glass for every drink he has, even if it is the same drink and leaving the old cup lying around. She has been a little more devious to make her point clear. She said: “Once I hid all

WOMEN spend more time getting ready for a night out with girl-friends than for a date. A new study on 2,000 women conducted by Malibu Rum found that on average, women spend 40 minutes getting ready for a date, but more than an hour getting ready for a night out with friends. Two thirds of the women involved in the study said the reason behind this is they want to ‘wow’ their friends by looking the best they can and also admitted to comparing their appearance to that of their pals. And for this reason spend more time preening than they perhaps normally would. Whereas 50 per cent of women admitted they have to rush to get ready for a date night, because their partners are ready considerably faster and lack patience.

NIGHT OUT: Everyone wants to ‘wow’ their friends. For some, however, it’s about the revelling and enjoying the process with a cocktail or glass of wine, and the music on whilst choosing the best outfit, hair and make-up to complete the look.

That’s why, according to the study a further 44 per cent of the women surveyed also admitted they enjoy the experience of getting ready to go out with friends just as much as the night out itself.

Sea water may kill bacteria that causes stomach trouble A GULP of sea water could be good for us. In a trial, scientists asked people to drink deep sea water with the idea it will help kill the Helicobacter

Pylori bacteria which is the main cause of stomach ulcers. Around four in 10 people have the bacteria, which usually lives harmlessly, but it can trigger an

ulcer in around 15 per cent of those infected. A team at the Kochi Medical School in Japan gave 23 people who were infected with the

bacteria deep-sea water and found it reduced bacteria numbers by 60 per cent, compared with 25 per cent in those consuming conventional water.

Probiotics can help mental disorders LOWER levels of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract could cause mental health issues such as ‘anxiety, autism and schizophrenia.’ Some scientists are beginning to recognise the power of healthy gut bacteria, especially seeing that the average adult carries up to five pounds of bacteria in their digestive tract. A study published in Nutritional Neuroscience from The Great Plains Laboratory, has shown that HPHPA levels - the chemical byproduct of the clostridia bacteria - are much higher in the urine of autistic children. Spanish people drink more beer SPANIARDS today drink more beer than in 2012, a study has revealed. Beer represents an average 1.36 per cent of their shopping basket, that is 1.1 per cent more then last year, the study carried out by the Agriculture, Food, and Environment ministry claims. The amber nectar is the favourite drink for the summer months and December, unexpectedly beating the traditional cava during the Christmas holidays. The average beer drinker in Spain is a father of two, aged between 35 and 64 years old. By regions, Andalucia is where more beer is drunk in Spain, followed by Murcia, Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura.

Last on the list are Cantabria, Navarra and Asturias, probably because local drinks like cider are more popular. Non-alcoholic beer is not very popular in Spain, the study claims. Only 1.6 litres in 10 litres consumed are alcohol free. In fact, non-alcoholic beer sales have decreased by 4.8 per cent in Spain in the last year. BEER: Best served cold.

Some like it hot SCIENTISTS from University College London have found Sichuan peppers, a popular ingredient in China, contain a chemical that activates touch sensors in the mouth. This could be why some people enjoy their food the hotter the better, while for others the sensation caused by eating chillies is painful. Researchers are unsure

exactly how it happens, but when chillies are placed inside the mouth, chemicals called capsaicinoids activate the parts of the tongue that determine if food is hot or cold. The peppers also contain a chemical called sanshool, that activates touch sensors. The findings could be used to discover why taste differs from person to person.

Then aim to satisfy the following generic needs: • The creation of summer shade and sheltered winter sun by the maximum use of the natural shade provided by the shadows of the house and by planting flowering or evergreen trees, palms and internal hedges if a large garden. • Sufficiently large cool surfaced terraces to enable outdoor entertaining and leisure activities, some shaded by trees or plant covered gazebos. • A network of attractively paved paths connecting the various terraces, main features and doorways of the house. • Interesting features such as fountains, ponds and rockeries, and a swimming pool or Jacuzzi. • In the remaining spaces make attractive plantings of flowering and perfumed deciduous and evergreen plants. • Consider planting a perpetually flowering/ fruiting lemon tree, one or

Use rainwater for plants. more orange or mandarins and, if at a low altitude, a grapefruit tree. • People who enjoy fresh vegetables can try to fit in at least a small raised bed in a corner of the garden and aim to produce them organically. We manage to harvest fresh vegetables daily throughout the year. Reduce the size of your water bill in achieving the above by being creative in collecting and distributing rainwater. To help gardeners new to Spain, as well as longtime residents who want to rethink their gardens, we describe 400 of the most practical plants for Spanish gardens in our book, ‘Your garden in Spain - from planning to planting and maintenance. The descriptions of each plant include indications of their drought and frost resistance and suitability for coastal or inland gardens.

Luckily, although many plants were late to flower this summer, autumn gardens are now even better than normal. The recent rain did wonders in brightening up plants and made the soil easy to work. So if you are planting up a new garden or filling in gaps in an established garden it’s possible to now plant out some of the more hardy plants and trees before the winter sets in. More delicate plants should be planted in the spring if you expect cold winds and frosts. Be sure you reflect on the impact of the frosts and dry summer months of the past few years on your garden before buying new plants. If you want a simple garden recognise that a Spanish style garden can be achieved with only five plants. Namely palms, cordylines, lantanas, hibiscus and irises. To these could be added geraniums if you are prepared to spray twice weekly from March to November against the dreaded geranium moth. If you have a larger garden it often makes sense to lay out your plot as a series of interconnected mini gardens each with a different style and type of plants. We suggest some creative ideas in our book to help you create something special and appropriate to your outdoor lifestyle. INTEREST RATES: Are at an all time low.

Consumers can ask for removal of mortgage clause THE Supreme Court has reaffirmed an earlier ruling saying that if transparency rules were not followed, minimum interest rate clauses on mortgages would be null and void. The transparency rules include banks failing to inform customers fully of the clause and burying the information amidst paperwork, failing to offer comparison products and not informing clients that if the interest rate fell to a certain level the mortgage

would become a fixed rate mortgage. Such clauses mean currently, as interest rates fall to an all time low, customers are not benefiting and continue to pay higher interest rates on their mortgages as the clauses prevent the rates charged from dropping to the actual market level. The ruling was issued after a number of banks asked for clarification on the original

Supreme Court ruling. As a result the BBVA has removed the clause from customers’ contracts and other customers who felt they were mis-sold their mortgage can now ask for its removal. The Supreme Court did say the minimum interest rate clause was legal as long as customers were fully aware of it and realised the risks arising from variable interest rates.

New build homes are all the rage once again ACCORDING to a recent report by the EU statistical office, Eurostat, the heart of the construction sector in Spain is beating once again. National production increased by 4.1 per cent

in June compared with the same month in 2012. This increase places Spain as the second most active Eurozone nation in this sector. Marc Pritchard of Taylor Wimpey España, said

there has been little new construction since 2008. “What’s big is new build. Our sales figures across all our developments show exactly this.” He said the Spanish

property market has been “incredible” over the last 12 months, adding that he hasn’t seen interest levels as high for many years as people used their summer holidays to hunt for their ideal second home.

THE Duke and Duchess of Palma have put their Barcelona mansion on the market for €9.8 million. The price tag is being advertised on a Russian estate agency website and is accompanied by 11 photos of the villa. Infanta Cristina, the daughter of Spain’s King and Queen, is selling the property to finance her move to Geneva to take up a job with La Caixa. Her husband Iñaki Urdangarín, the Duke of Palma, is due to follow her when their Spanish home is sold, although he is still under investigation over a money laundering and fraud case surrounding his firm the Noos Institute in Palma de Mallorca. King Juan Carlos lent his daughter €1.2 million in 2004 to purchase the mansion, a figure which she gradually paid back without interest and which she declared to the tax authorities.

The Invitation Challenge will see 32 bowlers in traditional whites take on 32 bikers in black leathers and all in support of efforts to raise €1,000 on the day for the Children of Emaús. Vila in Valencia ON Saturday La Vila Rugby Club travelled to the ‘Rio Turia’ ground in Valencia, to take part in a pre season tournament organised by the ‘Comunidad Valenciana’ federation. The tournament was between four local teams - Cau Valencia, Valencia Tecnidex, Akra Alicante and La Vila. La Vila won against both Akra Alicante and Valencia Technidex, but lost to the overall tournament winner, CAU Valencia.

Tourists first win GLENROTHES travelled to Albir for the 7th annual Spanish cricket tour. A touring party of 22 made the trip which cumlinated in two games on Saturday and Sunday. Skipper Greig Hopcroft won the toss and elected to bat first. Glenrothes managed 210 runs for nine wickets in their 40 overs, a good total and would be a challenging chase for the home side. The wickets of Spanish internationals Spencer, Munoz and Pennick saw Alfas slump to 11 for three in only five overs. Sporting Alfas were all out for 129 to give Glenrothes their first Saturday performance.
