Locals invited to Mojacar’s unveiling on pretty list ALMERIA province can proudly boast two of the 18 ‘prettiest towns in Spain.’ And the province will be the envy of Andalucia, as Mojacar and Lucainena de las Torres are the only towns in the region to make the list, as reported in the Euro Weekly News. Now the official proclamation of Mojacar as one of the 18 ‘Most beautiful towns in Spain’ will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 11:30 am in the meeting room of Mojacar Town Hall. The event will be chaired by the mayor of Mojacar Rosa Maria Cano and the president of the Association Oscar Soria. All Mojacar residents and business owners who wish to attend are invited to come along and learn about the objectives and activities of the association. They include commercial relationships with the Borghi travel tour operator, specialists in the travel industry, and other international contacts with similar associations in European countries.
The association ‘Los Pueblos mas bonitos de España’ (The prettiest towns in Spain) will form part of a network covering
18 municipalities and aims to promote tourism in towns and villages. The aim of this initiative is to boost promotional
efforts and tourism both nationally and internationally and organise activities related to heritage and culture.
Bishop lays foundation BISHOP of Almeria, Adolfo Gonzalez Montes, has laid the foundation stone of the new chapel dedicated to the Virgen de la Cabeza. It is to be built on top of the hill of Monteagud and will replace the existing chapel where a holy image is kept and is the place where thousands of pilgrims
visit every year at this time. The act was attended by the mayor of Benizalon, Emilio Cid, and mayors of several of the nearby towns, the parish priests in the area, and a group of pilgrims already arriving to touch the mantle of the virgin. The bishop also celebrated a Mass.

Big guns join in local tournament THE big guns of Almeria, Valencia, Villareal and Real Betis were the star attractions at the first Marmol Cup youth football tournament in Olua del Rio. The event, organised by the town hall with the collaboration of the Sports Department and local company Cosentino
brought together 16 teams including La Cañada, Albox, Los Gallardos, El Ejido 2012 and hosts Comarca del Marmol, all hoping to lift the trophy. Saturday saw a full day of sporting action as teams competed to reach the semi finals on Sunday. The four ‘big guns,’ all in
La Liga (premier division) won through to Sunday with Almeria winning the first semi final against Valencia and Real Betis beating Villareal after a penalty shoot out. The final was won by the youngsters of Almeria with a 2-1 victory and Valencia claimed third place.

Local stars help in food drive THREE football stars from UD Almeria have lent their support to a food bank campaign. Marcos Tebar, Angel Trujillo and Miguel Angel Corona paid a visit to the Mediterranean Shopping Centre in Almeria City to sign autographs for people who donated a kilo of non perishable food to the Food Bank of Almeria. Lots of children took the opportunity to meet their idols
and help feed the needy. Citizens were encouraged to participate in a gesture of solidarity in this initiative. The players signed shirts, balls and scarves, and were photographed with their fans as a reward for their donation. The following evening it was the turn of music group El Lunatico to sign t-shirts and discs in exchange for a kilo of food. The Al Campo hypermarket
organised the collection in collaboration with the Food Bank of Almeria, UD Almeria and El Lunatico, to ‘reawaken the spirit of solidarity that Almeria demonstrates’ in all food bank events. Non-perishable foods are pasta, flour, rice, pulses, oil and sugar. The food bank supplies 220 associations across the province through which food is distributed to more than 65,000 people.

If you hear a refrain of ‘shiver me timbers’ and are accused of being a landlubber, it is because today (Thursday) is ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day.’ From small beginnings it has swept the world and is now entrenched in 40 countries worldwide. The holiday was created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol’ Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap’n Slappy) of Albany, Oregon, initially as a private joke. The native English West Country dialect is considered the origin of the ‘pirate accent.’ That has led to difficulties for Spaniards wanting to join in the fun. No one can figure out what a Spaniard would say for shiver me timbers, shake-a-leg or bilge rat. There are whole web pages discussing the thorny problem. But they all agree that ‘aaaar’ is

Room for a master SINCE late April, workers at the Casa Ibañez Museum have been making an overall assessment of the collection of works of Francisco Capulet (Almería, 1926-2009). The heirs of the Indaliano painter have donated them to the Olula del Rio based institution. Since then it has been decided to dedicate a room to the work of Capulet in the permanent exhibition of the museum. After informing the family of the news, work began on the expansion and remodelling necessary to accommodate the works which are now on display on the upper floor of the museum Entry to the museum is free.

A tasty exhibition at Andalucia Sabor Fair THE Mayor of Sevilla, Juan Ignacio Zoido, has met with the delegation of businessmen from Almeria attending the Andalucia Sabor Fair (the international fine food exhibition) which is headed by agriculture deputy,
Oscar Liria. Among the products displayed in the international showcase are hams and sausages, wines, seafood, canned and fresh vegetables, snacks and oils from the province of Almeria.
out on Garrucha beaches THE Civil Protection service in Garrucha was involved in almost 600 incidents on the beaches during the summer months. The main incidents attended by the volunteers were for jellyfish stings (200) spider fish stings (9) and insect bites (9). Apart from that they were involved in 18 rescues with four people being transferred to the health centre and 90 treatments for diverse injuries. The summer operation of the lifeguards covers three elevated look out points covering the beaches and adds up to a total of 4,000 hours of service. The team also had at their disposal an emergency 4x4 vehicle, a motorbike and two zodiacs as well as a co-ordination centre equipped with breathing apparatus. The team also provided a bathing service for the disabled with the use of water chairs.

Students help feed the hungry MANAGERS and students from the employment workshop La Estacion II of Fines, who are studying organic farming, have donated 1,000 kilos of fruit and vegetables to charity. They have given the produce harvested from their first crops cultivated during their studies to the charity Caritas to distribute amongst the poor. The dozen students who make up the workshop have donated to the local branch of Caritas several boxes of tomatoes, courgettes, carrots, celery, cucumber, peppers, corn, melons, eggplant and green beans, all cultivated from the plantation which lies alongside the river.

Search on for injured shark THE search is on for a wounded shark spotted in the waters off Vera. Volunteers from the Marine Wildlife Recovery
Programme (Promar) and lifeguards are looking for a mako shark with a head wound seen near the beach.
The two-metre-long shark appeared to be disorientated and had a gash on its nose. Due to its small size and because
it belongs to a nonaggressive species, bathers decided to help to redirect it into the sea. Local police along with two volunteers from Promar are scouring the coast for the creature. Despite the species not being considered dangerous, they have
been known to attack humans and should be treated with caution. Promar spokesman Francisco Toledado said: “The most likely event is that it will return to the beach, where all we can do is remove it, since its chances of survival are slim if it is injured.”

Tijola’s triathlon treat ON Sunday, the fifth Popular Triathlon in Tíjola will be held as part of the town’s festivities. It will take place around the Balsa de Cela. Prospecting rights sought ALMERIA company, Alfarajo SL, has requested permission from the Junta de Andalucia to prospect for metallic ores near the the towns of Bacares and Seron. The company is hoping to carry out tests and observations from a total of 6,780 hectares of land, in particular on land that has already been exploited in the early 20th century when mines in this part of
the Almanzora Valley were in full swing. The land affected is around the former mining hamlets of Las Menas and El Cortijuelo. Alfarajo SL is a company dedicated to the production and marketing of building materials and the extraction of raw materials necessary for their manufacture. The company filed its application
to obtain a licence four months ago and is now waiting for the Provincial Delegation of Environment to grant the environmental permit for technicians to start studying the project. The Innovation Delegation has confirmed the clearance process for obtaining permits of this calibre is usually at least a year, so the petition is still at preliminary stages.
However, they insist the petition is being managed according to current regulations, with the company having already paid in excess of â‚Ź3,000 in fees as well as a guarantee deposit for the restoration of the site once the surveys have been completed. If the project is authorised with a positive outcome, it would be a major boost for the local economy.
Hotline to turn in benefit fraudsters THE UK Department of Works and Pensions has set up a hotline for people to give tip offs
about benefit fraudsters. Members of the public living in Spain can
report suspected fraud anonymously via the Benefit Fraud Hotline on 900 554 440 or online at: www.dwp.gov.uk/benefi t-thieves-spain. Phone lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am4pm and all calls are free and confidential. They are hoping to catch fraudsters, some of whom come up with the most unlikely excuses. One claimed his wife was really his sister, and another said she needed the cash for satellite TV. They are among the latest examples of strange excuses that Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) benefit fraud investigators have heard over the last year.
CAUGHT: Fraudsters can be reported anonymously. Other odd stories told to DWP officers include a claimant who, using a fake ID, said her skin colour had changed after a road accident; a man who blamed his evil twin; and a woman who claimed she wasn’t in a relationship but just had a three-night stand resulting in three children over five years. These unlikely stories
are revealed as the Government announces a new campaign to target benefit fraudsters - encouraging claimants to come clean about any changes to their circumstances and urging the public to report suspicions about possible fraudsters to the National Benefit Fraud Hotline. The campaign, starting this autumn, will remind claimants to report all changes in their circumstances at the time that they happen and before DWP investigators turn their attention to their claim. Examples of changes in circumstances include moving or buying property abroad, moving in with a partner or starting work.

Liquid gold for Lucar! THE Bodegas Alto Almanzora vineyard in Lucar has struck gold at a prestigious awards ceremony in China. It received medals for all four wines presented at the China Wine and Spirits Awards (CWSA) for 2013 winning two gold medals, one silver and one bronze. Now it is hoping for a boost into the Chinese market - the fastest growing in the world. The two wines awarded gold medals were the Valdemediano 2010 and the Valle Almanzora 2010 with the Este 2011 winning a silver medal and the Señorio de Almanzora winning a bronze medal. Pedro Franco, director of the Lucar vineyard expressed his delight at the news. He said: “We are very happy that Bodegas Alto Almanzora has achieved the highest honour in the fastest growing drinks market in the world. The CWSA remains the ultimate

authority for wines and spirits in Hong Kong.” As a reference that indicates the magnitude of the news, it has to be emphasised that the results establish a gateway to China, so the influence and decisions of the CWSA, is known as the benchmark for purchasing decisions throughout the year. During the competition 5,375 wines and spirits were presented from 35 countries around the world, which were tasted blind during the CWSA Tasting Week. There were 100 judges, all selected as major importers, distributors and retailers based in Hong Kong and China. Broken toe traps man in creek A MAN, 31, had to be rescued by the Guardia Civil after breaking a toe at the Cala de San Pedro, Las Negras, in Nijar. The injury prevented him from walking, leaving him trapped in a creek owing to the inaccessibility of the site. In the early hours, the operators of the Central Operations Services (COS-062) of the Command of the Guardia Civil in Almeria, received a phone call informing them of an accident and injury which a person had sustained while enjoying a day out at the beach in the Cala de San Pedro. They reported the incident
immediately to the Civil Guard post in San Jose. Agents reached the creek via a steep and difficult road. The Guardia Civil officers and the injured man began the two-kilometre journey back along a steep and narrow path. A large amount of loose stones added to the problems in getting the injured man out, said Guardia Civil sources. The agents finally reached their car which took the injured man, who comes from Sevilla, to the town of Las Negras, where there was an ambulance waiting to transfer him to the El Toyo Hospital where he was treated for his injury.

Turmoil at town hall ZURGENA Town Hall appears to be in turmoil following a vote of no confidence by eight of the 11 councillors in Mayor Francisco Ramos (PP). John Hare, a council coordinator for the PP,
commented: “Ever since the current mayor of Zurgena took office, he did not stand a chance of doing anything he wanted to for the benefit of Zurgena. “The coalition he was given put him in an impossible situation where the PP, who had three seats, needed to work with the PA, who had four seats. “Even the PSOE had four seats and they were in opposition. Why would the previous mayor, who may have still wanted to be mayor, use his years of experience to help the new
guy as best he could? “Add to this, one of his own party who was not really a PP supporter (he told me) and you have a recipe for disaster. I believe he was manipulated out from the start because of power struggles and the fact that he was making plans to be more transparent “It would not surprise me if the PA expat councillor who voted was also tricked; I assume he must have been if he voted for the PSOE knowing how much the expat community he represents would hate it.”

Grassroots encouraged GRASSROOTS football in Huercal-Overa is on the rise with Huercalense youth football signing a collaboration agreement with UD Almeria. The agreement has been promoted by the town hall of Huercal-Overa through the Department of Sports, in another example of the work that is being done in recent seasons to raise the profile of the young footballers of the town. The aim is to unify local grassroots football to work in the same direction. 2 cannons found on Cabo de Gata seabed ALMERIA diver and underwater photographer Javier Labrat has found two cannons on the seabed in the vicinity of Cabo de Gata. Javier contacted the Ministry of Culture, and records show that the cannon does not appear
in the underwater archaeological provincial charter. As there was never a fortress in the area, it is thought a shipwreck is the probable reason the cannons are there. “The most viable option is that it was a ship, as it
was in the bay, stranded between the stones and sand,” said Javier before commenting that the cannons are barely recognisable. He added that “the remains of a shipwreck have become visible now because the west
wind builds up sand in the area of the French Cable and this summer we’ve had especially strong levante winds, which removes the sand. “The rest of the wreck could be there too,” he said.
Botch job erases historic bullet holes

A BOTCHED job has erased part of Spain’s recent democratic history. Half a dozen bullet holes reminders of the 1981 attempted coup d’etat in Spain - have been covered and replaced by an air ventilation grille. The holes were made by a
group of Guardia Civil officers who, led by Lieutenant Antonio Tejero, attempted a coup d’etat in Spain on February 23, 1981. In it, numerous rounds from a submachine gun were fired into the ceiling in order to intimidate the government members. The coup d’etat eventually collapsed and the marks were left as a symbol of the Spanish transition to democracy. But now they have disappeared as a consequence of a refurbishment work at the Spanish Parliament that is taking more than a year to finish. Parliament president Jesus Posada, who gave specific orders to preserve the bullet holes, has announced an investigation to find out the person responsible for this erasure. “Thankfully there are still many bullet marks visible in the Congress ceiling,” said Parliament vice-president Celia Villalobos.

Last week the Euro Weekly News reported how the family of five-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer Keira faced a race against time to raise €2,500 after a disappointing turnout at a fundraiser. After reading of her plight John Griffiths of the Moraira Charity Shop was so moved he got in touch with the family and pledged to pay the full cost of the treatment. That has left Keira’s mother Debbie delighted. She said: “I want to thank them a million times. Thank you so much to everyone there, and thank you to the Euro Weekly News for publishing the story. “One minute I was lying in bed with a migraine trying to think what I could do to raise the money, the next an email popped up from John with the offer. You can imagine the relief I felt.” John said: “When I read about Keira we just had to help. READ an article this week written by a woman who says she feels guilty about spending her husband’s earnings. The woman described how she has always been a hard worker and enjoyed making purchases for herself and her husband using her salary, but since having a baby she now doesn’t feel as comfortable spending as she describes it - ‘his’ cash. When she was working, she says she wouldn’t have thought twice about buying lunch out or a new top, but since giving birth to a little girl and stepping back from her desk job the writer is hesitant to spend, as she doesn’t see the income coming into the house as her money! I imagine this attitude

A woman looking after a newborn baby is working, and often working long, hard, tiresome days at that. It’s an important job bringing up a child and it deserves to be valued
in the same way that professions outside the home are valued. The decision to have a baby is a joint effort, so there is no need for any stay-at-home mum, or dad for that matter, to feel uncomfortable about spending what should be considered as being the family’s money. Obviously, if one income is lost after having a baby, it’s wise not to be wheeling the new pram around town spending carelessly. It’s important to be organised and stick to a budget, but a stay-athome mum or dad should never feel as if the worker has the only claim to an income. In an ideal world it should be shared and spent fairly between the worker outside the house and the worker inside the home.

Telefonica plotting a comeback… TELEFONICA, which has been suffering in the domestic market, has predicted better times ahead. The company has been losing customers to cheaper rivals, particularly from its Movistar mobile brand. Luis Miguel Gilperez, CEO of Telefónica España, had pinned his hopes on ‘bundling’ together landline, ADSL and mobile products plus TV into one monthly payment under its Fusion banner. Since its launch the Fusion bundles have signed up 2.8 million customers. But despite its efforts
many cash strapped Spaniards are still moving to budget companies. Many mobile customers do not necessarily want to pay for a landline as well. So it remains cheaper to switch to other providers, many of whom offer free or very cheap data downloads as well as phone calls. Others offer good value ADSL internet deals and landline at very competitive prices. Movistar mobile lost 248,000 customers during March which brought its loss of customers in the first three months of the year to 700,000.

Spain’s mobile virtual network operators companies that offer a service using bigger providers’ infrastructure gained 210,000 customers in March alone. But Telefonica at a press conference has said that it is confident of an upswing in its fortunes. Gilperez said although not yet back to growth, the company
was close to reversing the trend of losing customers. It is planning to launch some innovative and cost effective products. These include the ability to use data ‘bought’ on a contract to be shared across different devices, negating the need for pricey contracts across all a household’s devices. And it plans to roll out the most modern and
fastest 4G mobile network across Spain at no extra cost to consumers. That is in contrast to other countries where customers who want 4G will have to pay a premium, usually around an extra €5 to €10 a month. It claims that 50 per cent of the country will have access to its 4G coverage by Christmas.
INSOLVENT frozen fish company Pescanova has appointed a new chairman. Shareholders decided to put Juan Manuel Urgoiti into the hot seat to guide the company through what is expected to be a lengthy insolvency process. The previous chairman left amid charges of insider trading and falsifying information. Manuel Fernandez de Sousa who left the post in April denied any wrongdoing. He and nine other executives are under court investigation. Urgoiti is a former chairman of Banco Gallego and sits on the board of directors of retailer Inditex, owner of Zara.

Gibraltar suffered as well! MR GRAHAM (Issue 1471) is quite right in praising Malta’s George Cross, but totally wrong about everything else. No one in Gibraltar has called for it to be granted to Gibraltar. The initiative has come from an English MEP. For the record, Gibraltar was bombed during World War 2 by both the French and Italians. The majority of the population had been removed to French Morocco only to be rounded up at gunpoint when France fell and crammed into ships that were obliged to sail to the nearest friendly port, Gibraltar, as they had no food or water. A second evacuation settled people in Madeira, Jamaica and, the bulk, in Blitz-torn and V-bombed London! Worse than that, our Indian Community was shipped to India, captured by a German raider, shipped to France, their ship torpedoed by a British submarine and the survivors interned in German Concentration Camps. Most of the population suffered five or six years of exile but some lingered in makeshift camps in Ireland away from home and family for 15 years. All able bodied persons helped in the war effort, not forgetting those in essential posts in Gibraltar. Since then, Gibraltar has contributed to the defence of democracy during The Korean War, the ‘withdrawal from Empire,’ the Falklands War and all the recent conflicts in the near and Middle East. Parking blues I AGREE with Allen Everington (Issue 1469) and Mick Scarles (Issue 1470) with regards to people parking in disabled parking bays without a badge. Just as bad are the people who abuse the parking privileges that come with a disabled badge. In the past few weeks I have seen four different cars parked in a disabled bay, display a badge and walk away with no apparent disability and there has not been anyone else in the car. A couple from Holland in Moraira parked in a disabled bay next to an empty normal space, put the badge on the dashboard and were quicker than us into the store. Len Atkinson, Benichembla, (Alicante)

Despite of.... MR ERIC CONWAY (letters, Issue 1470) refers to Oxford and Cambridge as though the Catholic Church set them up in their present form, when this actually came about gradually in spite of religious control, not because of it. The early religious academies functioned more as places of indoctrination according to dogma rather than as centres of inquiry and the search for knowledge and understanding. The non-acceptance by the medieval Church of factual discoveries about the physical world is well known, as is the forced retractions made by men of knowledge under Church duress. The ‘unprecedented human achievement’ of the Renaissance owed more to the discovery of Arab translations of Greek and Roman
texts and to Gutenberg’s invention of printing with re-usable type than to any positive input by the Church. I have no problem with people following their bliss but I think it diminishes their credence when, in their bliss, they either misrepresent historical facts or erase them altogether. Lanes needed I WAS interested to read the report about how poor Malaga’s cycling lanes are (CDS Issue 1471). The city is not alone. Cyclists in Spain are very badly catered for. I have read motorists complain about cyclists, but really the majority of us would rather not use the roads or pedestrian paths in town. So sorry! I WOULD like to say sorry that we had to cancel the paella at the Arts & Crafts Market in Rojales on Saturday evening Sept 7. Many visitors complained about that, but I had to make the decision early on due to rain and the
possibility of cancelling the event. Secondly, sorry I wasn’t able to do demonstrations or portraits due to lack of space. Thirdly, sorry that the event was severely curtailed with only a fraction of the artists expected, but they didn’t want their precious work ruined by rain. One visitor said “Is this all there is?” - but at least it went ahead! But better than turning out to find nothing there, I hope. The event started at 7pm but at 6pm it was still likely to be cancelled and it was only because I knew the gallery cave - Sala Mengolero - was empty and I suggested we used it, that the event happened. Thanks go to Rojales Town Hall for allowing use of Sala Mengolero at the last minute. Also thanks to the artists and artisans and the Funtastic Dixieland band. Martin, Rojales (Alicante)
Another mystery RE the ‘Mystery Statue in Marbella,’ (Costa del Sol, Issue 1470). I always admire this when leaving Venta Los Pacos, but there is more of his work in Marbella in Carib Playa in the beach restaurant Rama. Mad to even think of voting for Labour after their squandering HOW could anyone in their right mind even consider voting Labour at the next election? Personally the idea of Miliband, Balls and co. actually empowered to introduce just about anything that even vaguely controls the way we exist, fills me with absolute horror. Last week’s conference did precisely nothing to change my views. The only thing I agreed with in the whole sorry, uninspiring shambles, was the pathetic smattering of applause that greeted Miliband’s final summary. As a lifelong Conservative, I am still of the unshakable opinion that the UK is a business and should be run as such. Left wingers, with their ‘everybody out’ and ‘a better deal for the workers’ piffle is just that. Unadulterated hypocritical claptrap. Workers only prosper when the business prospers. Wages only rise when profits become healthier. Keep handing out more than is coming in and there can be only one inevitable result - bankruptcy.

Automatic Exchange Of Information As A Global Standard
2013 has seen unprecedented political support for automatic exchange of information. Various multilateral initiatives are being developed, and on 6th September the G20 announced plans to introduce automatic exchange of information as the global standard. Governments and tax authorities will start to receive much more information than ever before on their taxpayers’ financial affairs. In 2009, triggered by the financial crisis, the 20 wealthy nations declared that the “era of banking secrecy is over”. Within four years 119 jurisdictions had committed to the global standard for transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Around 1,100 new bilateral agreements had been signed. Tax authorities everywhere, including in Spain, have continued to explore more ways to co-operate and prevent taxpayers hiding assets and income overseas. Activity escalated this year, with the EU, G5, G8 and UK offshore centres all making significant
By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks announcements. Even Swiss bankers suggested it is time to change direction, initially by dropping banking secrecy for EU residents. Tax evasion is a global issue, so a model for automatic exchange of information needs to be developed and used worldwide to prevent people moving money elsewhere. We have therefore seen a move from the traditional bilateral agreements between two countries to multilateral agreements where several countries share vital information. At the September G20 Summit world leaders committed to
automatic exchange of information as the new global standard. They “fully endorse the OECD proposal for a truly global model for multilateral and bilateral automatic exchange of information” and will work together to present a new single standard by mid-2014. They aim to have all G20 members automatically exchanging information on tax matters by the end of 2015, and called on all other jurisdictions to join them by the earliest possible date. The G20 also pledged to close loopholes that allow tax avoidance by big businesses, and to help developing nations, not part of the international convention, to track funds in tax havens and improve their ability to prevent tax evasion. The G20 commitment is viewed as a major breakthrough in the global fight against tax fraud. It will provide authorities with much more
power to track down tax evaders and assets hidden overseas. This will be welcome news for the Spanish authorities who are focusing on overseas assets and increasing investigations. Expansión newspaper reported in July that, following last year’s tax amnesty, the Spanish tax agency has been asking taxpayers for proof of the source of the funds declared or clarification on discrepancies. Requests are being sent by both the Department for Administration of Taxes and Department for Investigations. The requests are more numerous and detailed than in the past. Regular taxpayers are being targeted as well as those who took advantage of the amnesty. As Expansión concluded, “it is clear that offshore assets are being targeted for full investigation.” The tax authorities will be going through all the 720 forms received
earlier this year, looking for discrepancies between the overseas assets declared and the data they have on file. All the new exchange of information agreements coming into force will enable them to check the declarations, to ensure that the information reported was correct, and that all overseas assets were included in Form 720 and none were left out. The consequences for failing to report an asset can be devastating. The days of financial privacy are long gone. This does not mean that you cannot still arrange your assets in a tax efficient way. There are effective, legitimate arrangements available to Spanish residents which can significantly lower your tax liabilities and in such a way that you need not worry about Form 720. Main undoing A RECENT POLL showed the PP and PSOE neck and neck. If there were elections tomorrow, Rajoy might not squeeze home. His huge parliamentary majority has been his undoing because the government’s disdain for consensus is alienating potential voters. Rajoy could not keep his
election promises regarding the economy and unemployment, but he has been able to carry out election threats. Labour reforms designed to combat austerity and create more jobs went through parliament like a dose of salts but created more austerity and fewer jobs. This has lost him the support of first-time PP voters. Unpopular abortion reforms have been delayed for almost two years although Justice minister Alberto RuizGallardon plans to resuscitate them in October. This one is likely to cause concern even to women (and men) who usually vote PP. A popular slogan with women’s groups translates as “Keep your rosaries out of our ovaries” and Rajoy must lose the PPChurch alliance image if he hopes to attract non-PP voters.

THE university graduate who felt ‘humiliated’ at having to perform a David Brent-style dance during an interview for a Currys job in South Wales got me thinking about interviews. Many of us have experienced sessions where you undergo a series of challenges and tests with other candidates and the best get chosen. Always nerve-racking. The worst part the end, where they split the group into two and tell you you’re doing another test. Your group’s then led through a door where somebody’s waiting to tell you: “Unfortunately you guys haven’t made it through. Thanks for coming and please use the rear exit.” X-Factor style. And that’s part of the problem. Reality shows like X-Factor which instantly (and, apparently, effortlessly) make contestants into ‘celebrities’ that young people strive to emulate. On the phone by the age of 5 Nearly one in 10 UK children get their first mobile phone by the time they are five years old, according to a survey by price comparisons website uSwitch.

A mix of drinks may be harmful MIXING alcohol with energy drinks could be more harmful than research currently suggests, claims a leading psychologist. Professor Peter Miller, Associate Professor of Psychology at Deakin University in Australia, warns that mixing spirits such as vodka with energy drinks can lead to higher levels of intoxication. He says that previous studies falsely reassure drinkers and don’t reflect the real world, apart from the fact that many of them are financed by energy drink manufacturers. Surveys show around three out of four college students in Europe and the US regularly indulge in such combinations, and studies looking at statistical links between certain forms of behaviour and drinkers mixing energy drinks and alcohol show they are likely to consume more alcohol, engage in aggressive acts, get injured and drink-drive.
Keeping fit can help to fight off cancer KEEPING active for just under 40 minutes a day could reduce the risk of cancer of the womb by nearly half. The World Cancer Research Fund’s (WCRF) Continuous Update Project found evidence that about 3,700 cases could be prevented every year with just 38 minutes of daily physical activity, combined with maintaining a healthy weight. Womb cancer mostly affects women aged over 60. The most common is endometrial, affecting the womb lining. Researchers at Imperial College, London, collated and reviewed all the scientific research available on womb cancer, diet, physical activity and body weight. Then an international
panel of experts judged the evidence with scientists at WCRF estimating that there is a link between body fat and cancer. It is thought fat cells could release hormones that can increase the risk of some cancers. Regular physical activity can help to keep these hormone levels healthy as well as strengthening the immune system and maintaining a healthy digestive system. The study also revealed evidence that drinking coffee can cut the risk of womb cancer. KEEPING ACTIVE: Just under 40 minutes a day could reduce the risk of cancer of the womb.
Men lose weight quicker IT’S official. Men lose weight quicker than women. A study which looked at the progress of 1.2 million slimmers found that men are usually more successful at losing weight as they are more focused and don’t comfort eat. Over a 12 week period, men lost an average 1st 2lbs while women lost 11lbs. Slimming World, which carried out the research for the study, said it could be down to men being stronger when faced with temptation and are less likely to comfort eat when things go wrong. This, combined with a combination of genetic factors such as the extra masculine muscle, which helps speed up the metabolism, is believed to account for why men can lose weight quicker.
Risks of waiting for pregnancy WOMEN should start their family by the age of 35, fertility experts advise. Newcastle University experts said women shouldn’t use their career as an excuse to delay motherhood, as working life
doesn’t get easier with age. They advised that family planning shouldn’t just be about avoiding pregnancy but that women must be informed about the risks of delaying motherhood. Otherwise those
who don’t have children could be ‘haunted’ by their decision to wait. They questioned whether couples are less willing to put up with financial hardship than they were in the past.

A new lead in the research against Down’s SCIENTISTS say they have found a compound which could one day reverse learning difficulties in children with Down’s Syndrome. On tests with mice it did reverse learning difficulties, but only when administered on the day the mice were born. Scientists at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, in Baltimore (USA)
believe that a single dose encourages the cerebellum of the rodents’ brains to grow to a normal size where most people with Down’s syndrome have a cerebellum that is only 60 per cent. The compound has not yet been proved safe for human use but researchers hope the findings could one day lead to drug treatment.

University of Manchester professor Daniel Davis explains women choose a partner with whom they could have children.
A COMPOUND found in broccoli is believed to help protect against sunburn and skin cancer. Scientists say the sulforaphane compound in the vegetable prevents the growth of cancer cells and can also trigger chemoprotective genes which protects healthy tissue from the toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs. When rubbed directly into the skin, broccoli could also reduce the chance of a person developing skin cancer, according to the researchers from the University of Arizona Cancer Centre (USA) and John Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA). The researchers believe that their discovery could eventually lead to a reduction in the number of skin cancer cases saying: “It is the kind of compound that has so many incredible theoretical applications if the dosage is measured properly.”

WALKING to work can reduce the risk of having heart problems and diabetes. A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine carried out on 20,000 people evidences that the way of getting to work influences our health. Nineteen per cent of people participating in the study who took public transport to get to work were obese, as opposed to 15 per cent of people who walked and 13 per cent who went to work by bike. These people have half the possibilities of suffering from diabetes, the study claims. “Walking to work is good for your health as well as for the environment,” points out study author Anthony Laverty.

What to buy, see and do this season SINCE life seems to be so gruesomely serious at the moment, I thought I would redress the balance with a totally trivial piece this week. So, let’s talk about shopping. For clothes, for trips and new hairdos - all those trimmings that can add a hint of rose-tint to our glasses. It may still be balmy here on our southern shores, but the posh ladies in the fashion media have decided that we all need to wear a pink woolly coat this season. You don’t even have to remortgage the house to buy one as the High Street is teeming with pink hues; powder, baby or salmon all pass the grade. Still, you should expect a heftier dry cleaning bill and you may need to invest in matching pink socks for your faithful dog, Rex, who may otherwise put some
unsightly paw prints on your new purchase. While paw prints have yet to hit the fashion radar for anyone over the age of five, leopard and zebra-prints are still going strong, so feel free to go wild this autumn, too. They are, however, best avoided in male couture unless your name is David Gandy, (the model who was voted the sexiest man alive by a recent YouTube survey, and fronts several advertising campaigns including Dolce & Gabbana,) in which case, you can wear anything at all. Or nothing, come to think of it… Anyway, back to the fashion dictators, I mean directors, we should all be shopping for some injection of tartan to your wardrobe - be it a beanie (yes, really) hat, skirt or shirt. Salmon can prevent rheumatoid arthritis EATING fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of having rheumatoid arthritis in women. A study carried out by scientists from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm (Sweden) on 32,000 women has confirmed that eating a portion of oily fish per week can prevent this illness. Results showed that the risk of having rheumatoid arthritis decreased by 29 per cent in women who ate 0,21 grams per day, the equivalent to a portion per week. “This is the first study that attributes

Homes to be saved by the new coastal law MORE than 7,900 homes built on the Basque Country coast will be saved due to the new Spanish coastal law. These homes, built when
the 1988 coastal law came into force, were in danger as their authorisation was expected to expire in 2018 allowing their demolition. Now these homes are
safe under the new coastal law passed by the Spanish Parliament in May. But this new law is no amnesty. According to Environment
Secretary, Federico Ramos, sentences already handed down ordering the demolition of any of these houses will have to be obeyed. “The Spanish
Government is optimistic as most of these houses fell in a legal grey area.” Also affected are 21 hotels, 78 beach bars and restaurants and 39 factories as well as the 7,992 homes soon to be saved.
Together they generate more than 2,500 jobs and have a turnover of nearly €42 million. These homes and businesses will be allowed to stay on the coast by paying a tax depending on their value.
Foreign buyers help boost house sales LATEST figures released by the Government indicate that the fall in house prices could be slowing down. On June 30 this year, prices were an average of 12 per cent lower than the previous year, although this figure varied with Murcia’s prices on average being 16.6 per cent lower, while Ceuta’s was 7.6 per cent. This decline had slowed by around 3.5 per cent in the second quarter of the year. Between April 1 and June 30, over 80,000 residential properties were sold across Spain according to Government statistics. Over the 12 month period, ending June 30, a total of 345,471 properties were sold, marking an increase of 2.3 per cent over the previous 12 months. Purchases made by international buyers accounted for 16.9 per cent; the highest number of foreign buyers since the statistic was first calculated in 2006.

year, so you need a garden that is pleasant to wander around, sunbathe and siesta in, cook, eat and drink. Fourthly, you may be short of water during the hottest summer months, so the number of plants you can support may be limited. Fifthly, many people purchasing properties are coming to Spain for their retirement and not to work and therefore may not initially be fully fit to take on the challenge of a Spanish garden
Against this background we suggest the following: Build up fitness and strength before tackling the heavy jobs. Get used to wearing a sunhat on the hottest days. Design the garden to match the type of lifestyle you envisage in Spain. Recognise that you may live in the chosen property for the rest of your lives, so take account of the future maintenance required when you start to design, construct and plant up the garden. Whatever you do, improve the soil before you plant anything, whether these be perennial or shrub beds, areas of flowering and fruiting trees and space for a vegetable plot etc,. Start a compost heap for kitchen and garden rubbish as soon as you move in so that within six months you will have compost to mix into the soil. Select plants that are reasonably drought resistant and frost resistant if inland - we indicate these in Part Four of our book ‘Your garden in Spain.’ Plan to grow at least some of your own fruit and vegetables. Our vegetable and fruit growing books were written to help you in getting going and avoiding the problems that we had in our early days. Dangerous job on agenda at Navy Club ALBOX NAVY CLUB held its third meeting, at Bistro Bonita, Cerro Gordo. Organisers reported that it was an extremely good meeting, with 18 members and guests attending. As well as normal business, those present listened to an interesting talk by Phil Morant, an 86 year old ex-navy man who served in Algerine Class Minesweepers in World War 2. Minesweeping was probably one of the most dangerous jobs in the war. As well as telling all about his experiences he also passed round some interesting newspaper cuttings from that period of his life. He also informed his audience that the Algerine class minesweepers name originated from this part of Spain. Apparently ‘Algerines’ were marauders from Algeria who entered Spain and kidnapped women. After the talk all present enjoyed excellent tapas, provided by Chris Wright (an ex-RN submariner). The next meeting of the Albox Navy Club is at 1pm on October 1 at Bistro Bonita, Cerro Gordo, near Albox. Getting ready for fun! HUERCAL-OVERA’S Department of Culture, is busy preparing for the Feria of 2013 to be held from October 16 to 21. As always some of the main attractions of the Feria are the high-quality concerts that the municipality provides, and this year will not be any different. Is your pet really insured? RECENTLY I wrote about my dog Boy Boy who, whilst at Cat and Dog World Kennels, suffered a stomach torsion also known as bloat. When this occurs most dogs die. But the wonderful Amy who was on night duty noticed Boy Boy had a problem and he was rushed to the vet and immediately operated on. His life was saved. Over the years, both in my columns and on my radio shows, I have always very strongly recommended pet insurance. But now I know you have to be careful and read the small print. I presented my claim and was informed that my dog was not covered whilst in kennels. I was lost for words. Furthermore, I was informed that due to him being a large breed this condition was genetic. The company does not pay-out for genetic conditions. To me that means it need not pay for most illnesses since they can easily claim it was genetic and no payment will be made. Do we read the small print? I think not. Obviously, being in the industry I am concerned not just

Renault’s triumphant first day at show FRENCH manufacturer Renault was presented with five awards at the award ceremony held on the opening day of the Frankfurt International Motor Show. A jury, made up of 10 independent members who are all design experts, presented awards in the ‘Exterior Volume Brand’ category to the Clio, Captur and ZOE. These three models have been on the market for less than a year and spearheaded the Renault brand’s new design policy. Developed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Alpine A110, also known as Berlinette, the Alpine A110-50 also took an award at the ‘Concepts’ category. Renault’s stand concept, dubbed ‘The Bump’, also won an award in the Automotive Brand AWARD CEREMONY: The Clio, Captur and ZOE all won awards.
