A big thank you! Therapy cash raised for little Keira By Dilip Kuner A LITTLE girl who desperately needs intensive therapy will get her treatment thanks to a local expatriate charity shop. Last week the Euro Weekly News reported how the family of fiveyear-old cerebral palsy sufferer Keira faced a race against time to raise €2,500 after a disappointing turnout at a fundraiser. After reading of her plight, John Griffiths of the Moraira Charity Shop was so moved he got in touch with the family and pledged to pay the full cost of the treatment. That has left Keira’s mother Debbie delighted. She said: “I want to thank them a million times. Thank you so much to everyone there, and thank you to the Euro Weekly News for
publishing the story. “One minute I was lying in bed with a migraine trying to think what
I could do to raise the money, the next an email popped up from John with the offer. You can imagine the relief I felt.” Euro Weekly News reported how
Keira was booked in for intensive therapy not available on the NHS due to start in October. It was timed to start six months after an operation on her legs she underwent on May 14, the optimum time for the best results. Debbie also paid tribute to the expatriate community on the Costa Blanca. “Over the years they have given us 95 per cent of the help we have had.” With the therapy bills paid any extra money raised will go for accommodation costs and living expenses as the therapy sessions are held in Barcelona. John said: “When I read about Keira we just had to help. Everyone on the ruling committee felt it was a very deserving cause. “We have a large pot of money for deserving causes. ALFAZ’S Copletes celebration for Our Lady of Sorrows exceeded all expectations. The Church square was packed with people on an occasion that Fiestas councillor, Juan Carlos Casiano described as “the most multitudinous ever.”
Although their origin is undocumented, the Copletes celebrations are one of the oldest fiestas in Alfaz del Pi. Traditionally the singers are not required to have good voices although the Copletes are now considered difficult to perform.
Once the recital ended there was dancing, followed by ‘mistela’ to drink and ‘coca’ to eat.The Copletes died out in the post-war years but were revived in 1986 with the help of elderly Alfaz residents who sang them in their youth.

Three-kilometre bus impasse LA NUCIA is subsidising school buses for pupils ineligible for free transport under Generalitat regulations. Many live just under the threekilometre limit set by the regional government, but not all Valencian Community town halls go to the same lengths as La Nucia. Parents must often drive children to school or walk with them, sometimes along narrow
country roads without pavements. Distances are measured as the crow flies but their actual journey is often winding and exceeds the stipulated three kilometres. This is the case in Montserrat (Valencia) where mothers took matters into their own hands last year. They raised money for a school bus by posing naked for a calendar, satirising the
hazards posed by their twice-daily trek. They earned enough to provide a bus service until the end of June but they will not need to get their clothes off this year. Two Montserrat mothers won €25,000 on a television game show, enough to pay for a bus from October until next June. Until then, though, it will again be a case of Shanks’s pony.

If you hear a refrain of ‘shiver me timbers’ and are accused of being a landlubber, it is because today (Thursday) is ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day.’ From small beginnings it has swept the world and is now entrenched in 40 countries worldwide. The holiday was created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol’ Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap’n Slappy) of Albany, Oregon, initially as a private joke. The native English West Country dialect is considered the origin of the ‘pirate accent.’ That has led to difficulties for Spaniards wanting to join in the fun. No one can figure out what a Spaniard would say for shiver me timbers, shake-a-leg or bilge rat. There are whole web pages discussing the thorny problem. But they all agree that ‘aaaar’ is

Marihuana crops come a cropper BARELY a week goes by without the discovery of another clandestine marihuana plantation. Close police surveillance has complicated the usual smuggling routes along the coast. This, coupled to the Alicante climate, has persuaded small-time traffickers to start growing their own marihuana. They are frequently foiled by regular police operations throughout the province, the most recent of which centred on the towns of Ibi, Castalla and Sax. More than 1,000 marihuana plants were seized in separate but coordinated operations as Guardia Civil acted on suspicions that there were several plantations.

Escaped dog bites two joggers TWO men were savaged by the same dog in separate incidents in Campello. The attacks occurred in an area popular with walkers and 200 metres away from a school. Jose Luis Trasobares, a fireman, was out on his daily run when the dog, a Pyrenean mastiff weighing around 60 kilos, launched itself at him. He was bitten on the thigh and arm, and his injuries were severe enough to keep him off work for 10 days. At the Health Centre he encountered another runner who was badly bitten an hour earlier by the same dog. Local Police traced the animal and found that it had escaped through a hole in a fence without its owner’s knowledge. It has now been registered as dangerous.

Two drown on city beaches TWO people have drowned recently on Alicante City beaches within 24 hours of each other. They were the only deaths through drowning in the city this summer, although there were 15 deaths on other beaches in the province. The first involved a Spanish tourist swimming at Alicante’s El Postiguet beach. A lifeguard saw his lifeless body floating headdown near to the Hotel Melia breakwater.

The green flag was hoisted for the Postiguet in general but a red flag flew near the breakwater where the body was discovered. Attempts to revive the 68-year-old from Segovia were unsuccessful. His body was bruised, possibly through contact with the breakwater rocks, sources said later. The second drowning occurred less than a day later when the body of an 80-year-old man was found near the shore on the beach at Playa de San Juan.

Gandia tough on drivers IN the space of six days 1,640 people committed traffic offences in Gandia. Red-light cameras fixed to street lights at three traffic black spots sent back “chilling information,” according to Public Safety councillor Javier Reig. Drivers regularly jumped red lights and failed to obey ‘Stop’ signs, he revealed. The town hall carried out a six-day survey to estimate how often motorists commited infractions. The results were announced to raise local drivers’ awareness, Reig explained. Fine to-do over costly rescues
Plea for a ‘new station’ NATIONAL POLICE officers in Benidorm need new headquarters. The premises in the centre of town are inadequate, they complained, and they must use the corridors as changing rooms. Detainees are obliged to enter the station under the gaze of tourists in adjoining hotels and once inside they are taken past victims reporting crimes. NO-ONE has yet been charged for rescue in situations arising from negligence. The Generalitat warned in 2010 that victims would have to pay if they needed the emergency services’ assistance through carelessness or disregarding official directives. Fines of up to €150,000 would make people more careful, the Generalitat said.
None have been imposed, however, even after three climbers were rescued from the Barranco del Infierno last winter. “We shall have to see if recklessness was involved,” Serafin Castellano, head of the Interior department said at the time. Although the regulations have not been applied, costly rescues including helicopters are currently under review, Castellano said.

Alicante waste travels inland VEGA BAJA rubbish will go to landfills in Jijona and Villena. The Vega Baja towns in southern Alicante generate 270,000 tonnes of refuse each year. An annual 70,000 tonnes will now go to Jijona and 60,000 tonnes to Villena until the Albatera site is ready in two years’ time. The remainder will be treated in Crevillente, Alicante and Elche.
Neither of the towns’ mayors back the move but they are outvoted on the two consortiums of local towns to which they belong. The regional government and Alicante’s Diputacion (provincial government) control 40 per cent of consortium votes. The remaining 60 per cent are in the hands of the towns involved, most
New bus station opens in Javea
JAVEA has a new bus station in Avenida Palmela. Alsa, which covers the Valencia to Alicante route, is providing a direct weekend connection with Valencia City for residents who study or work there during the week and return at the weekend. The new service will leave Javea at 6.20pm each Sunday evening, returning from Valencia City at 3.30pm on Fridays. Inside Javea, local buses now start and finish at the new bus station. They follow the same routes as before and still stop at the Olivo roundabout in Avenida de Ondara.

Lifeline for those with mortgage problems HELP is at hand for Altea families genuinely unable to meet mortgage commitments. The town hall and the Alicante College of Lawyers have worked out plans to provide free legal aid for families or individuals at risk of eviction. The arrangement will come into
force on October 1 this year and remain in place until September 30 2014. This can be renewed annually, said Mayor Miguel Ortiz. The town hall’s Social Services department is handling the scheme and also providing an office for the legal experts.
“Alteanos will be able to receive information, assessment and support,” said Social Services councillor Gregorio Alvado. The office will also mediate with the banks, he added, so that people in financial difficulties with mortgage problems do not have to lose their homes.

By Gabriel Pajares CALLOUS thieves broke into a charity shop and stole cash destined to help children in some of the poorest parts of the world. Not only was €100 stolen but costume jewellery meant for sale to benefit the Love a Child Foundation was taken from Pocapecunia, a Nerja-based charity shop. “It’s unbelievable. Maybe it’s the economic crisis, but it’s a pity because this act gives the town of Nerja a bad name,” shop manager Elise Brouwers said. The Love a Child Foundation helps Tibetan refugee children in India and Nepal, as well as poor children from Burma and Ecuador. “With the €100 stolen we could have educated a child for one year in Burma, Laos or Ecuador,” said Elise. Now workers at the Euro Weekly News have offered to help out with a €100 donation to make up the charity’s losses. But Pocapecunia still has to replace the stolen goods. Elise is hoping the altruistic citizens of Nerja will step forward with donations of unwanted goods for the shop to replace those stolen. READ an article this week written by a woman who says she feels guilty about spending her husband’s earnings. The woman described how she has always been a hard worker and enjoyed making purchases for herself and her husband using her salary, but since having a baby she now doesn’t feel as comfortable spending as she describes it - ‘his’ cash. When she was working, she says she wouldn’t have thought twice about buying lunch out or a new top, but since giving birth to a little girl and stepping back from her desk job the writer is hesitant to spend, as she doesn’t see the income coming into the house as her money! IT’S YOURS: His money is your money too. stay at home and look after a newborn, but it’s an attitude that makes the 1950’s look progressive and a stop needs to be put to such negative thinking immediately.
A woman looking after a newborn baby is working, and often working long, hard, tiresome days at that. It’s an important job bringing up a child and it deserves to be valued
in the same way that professions outside the home are valued. The decision to have a baby is a joint effort, so there is no need for any stay-at-home mum, or dad for that matter, to feel uncomfortable about spending what should be considered as being the family’s money. Obviously, if one income is lost after having a baby, it’s wise not to be wheeling the new pram around town spending carelessly. It’s important to be organised and stick to a budget, but a stay-athome mum or dad should never feel as if the worker has the only claim to an income. In an ideal world it should be shared and spent fairly between the worker outside the house and the worker inside the home.

Telefonica plotting a comeback… TELEFONICA, which has been suffering in the domestic market, has predicted better times ahead. The company has been losing customers to cheaper rivals, particularly from its Movistar mobile brand. Luis Miguel Gilperez, CEO of Telefónica España, had pinned his hopes on ‘bundling’ together landline, ADSL and mobile products plus TV into one monthly payment under its Fusion banner. Since its launch the Fusion bundles have signed up 2.8 million customers. But despite its efforts
many cash strapped Spaniards are still moving to budget companies. Many mobile customers do not necessarily want to pay for a landline as well. So it remains cheaper to switch to other providers, many of whom offer free or very cheap data downloads as well as phone calls. Others offer good value ADSL internet deals and landline at very competitive prices. Movistar mobile lost 248,000 customers during March which brought its loss of customers in the first three months of the year to 700,000.

Spain’s mobile virtual network operators companies that offer a service using bigger providers’ infrastructure gained 210,000 customers in March alone. But Telefonica at a press conference has said that it is confident of an upswing in its fortunes. Gilperez said although not yet back to growth, the company
was close to reversing the trend of losing customers. It is planning to launch some innovative and cost effective products. These include the ability to use data ‘bought’ on a contract to be shared across different devices, negating the need for pricey contracts across all a household’s devices. And it plans to roll out the most modern and
fastest 4G mobile network across Spain at no extra cost to consumers. That is in contrast to other countries where customers who want 4G will have to pay a premium, usually around an extra €5 to €10 a month. It claims that 50 per cent of the country will have access to its 4G coverage by Christmas.
INSOLVENT frozen fish company Pescanova has appointed a new chairman. Shareholders decided to put Juan Manuel Urgoiti into the hot seat to guide the company through what is expected to be a lengthy insolvency process. The previous chairman left amid charges of insider trading and falsifying information. Manuel Fernandez de Sousa who left the post in April denied any wrongdoing. He and nine other executives are under court investigation. Urgoiti is a former chairman of Banco Gallego and sits on the board of directors of retailer Inditex, owner of Zara.

Gibraltar suffered as well! MR GRAHAM (Issue 1471) is quite right in praising Malta’s George Cross, but totally wrong about everything else. No one in Gibraltar has called for it to be granted to Gibraltar. The initiative has come from an English MEP. For the record, Gibraltar was bombed during World War 2 by both the French and Italians. The majority of the population had been removed to French Morocco only to be rounded up at gunpoint when France fell and crammed into ships that were obliged to sail to the nearest friendly port, Gibraltar, as they had no food or water. A second evacuation settled people in Madeira, Jamaica and, the bulk, in Blitz-torn and V-bombed London! Worse than that, our Indian community was shipped to India, captured by a German raider, shipped to France, their ship torpedoed by a British submarine and the survivors interned in German concentration camps. Most of the population suffered five or six years of exile but some lingered in makeshift camps in Ireland away from home and family for 15 years. All able bodied persons helped in the war effort, not forgetting those in essential posts in Gibraltar. Since then, Gibraltar has contributed to the defence of democracy during The Korean War, the ‘withdrawal from Empire,’ the Falklands War and all the recent conflicts in the near and Middle East. Parking blues I AGREE with Allen Everington (Issue 1469) and Mick Scarles (Issue 1470) with regards to people parking in disabled parking bays without a badge. Just as bad are the people who abuse the parking privileges that come with a disabled badge. In the past few weeks I have seen four different cars parked in a disabled bay, display a badge and walk away with no apparent disability and there has not been anyone else in the car. A couple from Holland in Moraira parked in a disabled bay next to an empty normal space, put the badge on the dashboard and were quicker than us into the store. Len Atkinson, Benichembla, (Alicante)

Despite of... MR ERIC CONWAY (letters, Issue 1470) refers to Oxford and Cambridge as though the Catholic Church set them up in their present form, when this actually came about gradually in spite of religious control, not because of it. The early religious academies functioned more as places of indoctrination according to dogma rather than as centres of inquiry and the search for knowledge and understanding. The non-acceptance by the medieval Church of factual discoveries about the physical world is well known, as is the forced retractions made by men of knowledge under Church duress. The ‘unprecedented human achievement’ of the Renaissance owed more to the discovery of Arab translations of Greek and Roman
texts and to Gutenberg’s invention of printing with reusable type than to any positive input by the Church. I have no problem with people following their bliss but I think it diminishes their credence when, in their bliss, they either misrepresent historical facts or erase them altogether. Lanes needed I WAS interested to read the report about how poor Malaga’s cycling lanes are (CDS Issue 1471). The city is not alone. Cyclists in Spain are very badly catered for. I have read motorists complain about cyclists, but really the majority of us would rather not use the roads or pedestrian paths in town. So sorry! I WOULD like to say sorry that we had to cancel the paella at the Arts & Crafts Market in Rojales on Saturday evening September 7. Many visitors complained about that, but I had to make the decision early on due to rain and the
possibility of cancelling the event. Secondly, sorry I wasn’t able to do demonstrations or portraits due to lack of space. Thirdly, sorry that the event was severely curtailed with only a fraction of the artists expected, but they didn’t want their precious work ruined by rain. One visitor said “Is this all there is?” - but at least it went ahead! But better than turning out to find nothing there, I hope. The event started at 7pm but at 6pm it was still likely to be cancelled and it was only because I knew the gallery cave - Sala Mengolero - was empty and I suggested we used it, that the event happened. Thanks go to Rojales Town Hall for allowing use of Sala Mengolero at the last minute. Also thanks to the artists and artisans and the Funtastic Dixieland band. Martin, Rojales (Alicante)
Another mystery RE the ‘Mystery Statue in Marbella,’ (Costa del Sol, Issue 1470). I always admire this when leaving Venta Los Pacos, but there is more of his work in Marbella in Carib Playa in the beach restaurant Rama. It has to be by the same artist as it is nearly identical, and at Rama the trees are alive! Jamie Stonehewer (By email). Automatic Exchange Of Information As A Global Standard
2013 has seen unprecedented political support for automatic exchange of information. Various multilateral initiatives are being developed, and on 6th September the G20 announced plans to introduce automatic exchange of information as the global standard. Governments and tax authorities will start to receive much more information than ever before on their taxpayers’ financial affairs. In 2009, triggered by the financial crisis, the 20 wealthy nations declared that the “era of banking secrecy is over”. Within four years 119 jurisdictions had committed to the global standard for transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Around 1,100 new bilateral agreements had been signed. Tax authorities everywhere, including in Spain, have continued to explore more ways to co-operate and prevent taxpayers hiding assets and income overseas. Activity escalated this year, with the EU, G5, G8 and UK offshore centres all making significant

Tax evasion is a global issue, so a model for automatic exchange of information needs to be developed and used worldwide to prevent people moving money elsewhere. We have therefore seen a move from the traditional bilateral agreements between two countries to multilateral agreements where several countries share vital information. At the September G20 Summit world leaders committed to
automatic exchange of information as the new global standard. They “fully endorse the OECD proposal for a truly global model for multilateral and bilateral automatic exchange of information” and will work together to present a new single standard by mid-2014. They aim to have all G20 members automatically exchanging information on tax matters by the end of 2015, and called on all other jurisdictions to join them by the earliest possible date. The G20 also pledged to close loopholes that allow tax avoidance by big businesses, and to help developing nations, not part of the international convention, to track funds in tax havens and improve their ability to prevent tax evasion. The G20 commitment is viewed as a major breakthrough in the global fight against tax fraud. It will provide authorities with much more
power to track down tax evaders and assets hidden overseas. This will be welcome news for the Spanish authorities who are focusing on overseas assets and increasing investigations. Expansión newspaper reported in July that, following last year’s tax amnesty, the Spanish tax agency has been asking taxpayers for proof of the source of the funds declared or clarification on discrepancies. Requests are being sent by both the Department for Administration of Taxes and Department for Investigations. The requests are more numerous and detailed than in the past. Regular taxpayers are being targeted as well as those who took advantage of the amnesty. As Expansión concluded, “it is clear that offshore assets are being targeted for full investigation.” The tax authorities will be going through all the 720 forms received
earlier this year, looking for discrepancies between the overseas assets declared and the data they have on file. All the new exchange of information agreements coming into force will enable them to check the declarations, to ensure that the information reported was correct, and that all overseas assets were included in Form 720 and none were left out. The consequences for failing to report an asset can be devastating. The days of financial privacy are long gone. This does not mean that you cannot still arrange your assets in a tax efficient way. There are effective, legitimate arrangements available to Spanish residents which can significantly lower your tax liabilities and in such a way that you need not worry about Form 720. Personally the idea of Miliband, Balls and co. actually empowered to introduce just about anything that even vaguely controls the way we exist, fills me with absolute horror. Last week’s conference did precisely nothing to change my views. The only thing I agreed with in the whole sorry, uninspiring shambles, was the pathetic smattering of applause that greeted Miliband’s final summary. As a lifelong Conservative, I am still of the unshakable opinion that the UK is a business and should be run as such. Left wingers, with their ‘everybody out’ and ‘a better deal for the workers’ piffle is just that. Unadulterated hypocritical claptrap. Workers only prosper when the business prospers. Wages only rise when profits become healthier. Keep handing out more than is coming in and there can be only one inevitable result - bankruptcy. Advertising Feature

country firmly on its feet, they subsequently allowed in a positive deluge of often spongers and grabbers, without a patriotic bone in their bodies, who then proceeded to bleed the country dry. Our National Health Service, schools and public services, which should have been part of the British people’s reward for their hard work, are now strained to breaking point and will take years to recover - if ever. They squandered even more money by attempting to bribe the masses with handouts and subsequently created a vast army of spongers who consider working for a living a mugs’ game. They embroiled us in a war which cost billions and brought the misery of death and maiming into thousands of British homes. And some of you want to vote them back in. Keep the faith. Love Leapy. Olympics were a luxury neither Madrid nor the country could afford. Treasury minister Luis de Guindos had vowed that cash would be available. So spend it on Health or Education, comes the call now. De Guindos could explain at length why he cannot but few will listen. Social wellbeing is currently the country’s biggest preoccupation, not sport. Except football, of course.
War games SPAIN had little stomach for international wars until Aznar trotted after Bush and Blair into Iraq, doing himself no good at all. And then along came Rajoy, present at the G20 meeting and staunchly adding Spain’s name to the joint resolution
from Britain, France and Italy supporting Obama on Syria. This went down well with the US but badly in Spain where 96 per cent oppose military action. Still worse, Angela Merkel was livid. It was wrong, she said, to sign the statement without knowing where other EU members, absent from the G20 meeting, stood. Rajoy afterwards hastened to clarify that Spain was not “expressing support for a specific military action.” The suspicion remains that the rectification was for the German chancellor’s benefit, not Spain’s.
Main undoing A RECENT POLL showed the PP and PSOE neck and neck. If there were elections tomorrow, Rajoy might not squeeze home. His huge parliamentary majority has been his undoing because the government’s disdain for consensus is alienating potential voters. Rajoy could not keep his
election promises regarding the economy and unemployment, but he has been able to carry out election threats. Labour reforms designed to combat austerity and create more jobs went through parliament like a dose of salts but created more austerity and fewer jobs. This has lost him the support of first-time PP voters. Unpopular abortion reforms have been delayed for almost two years although Justice minister Alberto RuizGallardon plans to resuscitate them in October. This one is likely to cause concern even to women (and men) who usually vote PP. A popular slogan with women’s groups translates as “Keep your rosaries out of our ovaries” and Rajoy must lose the PPChurch alliance image if he hopes to attract non-PP voters.

What to buy, see and do this season SINCE life seems to be so gruesomely serious at the moment, I thought I would redress the balance with a totally trivial piece this week. So, let’s talk about shopping. For clothes, for trips and new hairdos - all those trimmings that can add a hint of rose-tint to our glasses. It may still be balmy here on our southern shores, but the posh ladies in the fashion media have decided that we all need to wear a pink woolly coat this season. You don’t even have to remortgage the house to buy one as the High Street is teeming with pink hues; powder, baby or salmon all pass the grade. Still, you should expect a heftier dry cleaning bill and you may need to invest in matching pink socks for your faithful dog, Rex, who may otherwise put some
unsightly paw prints on your new purchase. While paw prints have yet to hit the fashion radar for anyone over the age of five, leopard and zebra-prints are still going strong, so feel free to go wild this autumn, too. They are, however, best avoided in male couture unless your name is David Gandy, (the model who was voted the sexiest man alive by a recent YouTube survey, and fronts several advertising campaigns including Dolce & Gabbana,) in which case, you can wear anything at all. Or nothing, come to think of it… Anyway, back to the fashion dictators, I mean directors, we should all be shopping for some injection of tartan to your wardrobe - be it a beanie (yes, really) hat, skirt or shirt. Lift your salad with dressings SALADS are a versatile dish. Served warm or cold, as a side or as the main meal, they fit in every occasion. Almost any ingredient is suitable for a salad, and they can elevate them into a fine cuisine dish when the produce is good and seasonable. Equally varied are salad dressings, although people usually stick to the classic French, Caesar or ranch dressings. Record figure for Idiazabal cheese A CHEESE has been auctioned for €7,500 in Ordizia, in the Basque Country. The intense flavoured snack was the winner of this years’ edition of the Idiazabal Cheese Contest, in which 53 producers presented their cheeses. The Idiazabal is a pressed, hard cheese made from whole, raw ewe’s milk from the
Latxa and Carranzana breeds typical of the Basque Country and Navarre. It is the third time the jury, presided by Basque chef Juan Mari Arzak, awarded cheese producer from Navarre, Ricardo Remiro with the prize. An auction held after the contest saw
the cheese sold for €7,500, a figure that breaks the record reached last year when a cheese was sold for €7,400.

Fourthly, you may be short of water during the hottest summer months, so the number of plants you can support may be limited. Fifthly, many people purchasing properties are coming to Spain for their retirement and not to work and therefore may not initially be fully fit to take on the challenge of a Spanish garden. We suggest the following things to be helpful. Build up fitness and strength before tackling the heavy jobs. Get used to wearing a sunhat on the hottest days. Design the garden to match the type of lifestyle you envisage in Spain.
Take account of the maintenance required when you start to design, construct and plant up the garden. Yes you can employ a gardener, but the more maintenance required, the higher the cost and some garden landscaping companies are in reality more interested in the annual maintenance contract rather than the one-off design contract. Foreign buyers help boost house sales LATEST figures released by the Government indicate that the fall in house prices could be slowing down. On June 30 this year, prices were an average of 12 per cent lower than the previous year, although this figure varied with Murcia’s prices on average being 16.6 per cent lower, while Ceuta’s was 7.6 per cent. This decline had slowed by around 3.5 per cent in the second quarter of the year. Between April 1 and June 30, over 80,000 residential properties were sold across Spain according to Government statistics.
Homes to be saved by the new coastal law MORE than 7,900 homes built on the Basque Country coast will be saved due to the new Spanish coastal law. These homes, built when the 1988 coastal law came into force, were in danger as their authorisation was expected to expire in 2018 allowing their demolition. Now these homes are safe under the new coastal law passed by the Spanish Parliament in May. But this new law is no amnesty. According to Environment Secretary, Federico Ramos, sentences already handed down ordering the demolition of any of these houses will have to be obeyed. “The Spanish Government is optimistic as most of these houses fell in a legal grey area.” Also affected are 21 hotels, 78

Is your pet really insured? RECENTLY I wrote about my dog Boy Boy who, whilst at Cat and Dog World Kennels, suffered a stomach torsion also known as bloat. When this occurs most dogs die. But the wonderful Amy who was on night duty noticed Boy Boy had a problem and he was rushed to the vet and immediately operated on. His life was saved. Over the years, both in my columns and on my radio shows, I have always very strongly recommended pet insurance. But now I know you have to be careful and read the small print. I presented my claim and was informed that my dog was not covered whilst in kennels. I was lost for words. Furthermore, I was informed that due to him being a large breed this condition was genetic. The company does not pay-out for genetic conditions. To me that means it need not pay for most illnesses since they can easily claim it was genetic and no payment will be made. Do we read the small print? I think not. Obviously, being in the industry I am concerned not just

THE 65th Frankfurt Motor Show is being held until September 22. The international exhibition could not come at a better moment for the Spanish industry, which recently ousted Russia from 11th place in the International Organisation
of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers ranking. The Spanish car industry registered a profit of €6.3 billion during the first half of the year, according to the Spanish Car and Lorry Manufacturers Association (Anfac). In Spain 210,581 cars
were manufactured in July, an increase of 15.36 per cent in relation to 2012 said Anfac. Many of these cars, including the Ford S-Max soon to be produced in Valencia, are being presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The show gathers all the segments of the car industry together on a 230,000 m2 site and more than 1,000 stands. Two themes are being highlighted at the show; electric cars and so-called car connectivity, that is technology that aims at connecting the driver with the car and the environment. German manufacturers will unveil 16 electric cars, with many more produced by Chinese, French, British, Japanese and American manufacturers. This is proof that this technology has ceased to be just a concept but has become a reality, according to the organising German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). Car connectivity is being planned to change the driving and safety of cars, with technology capable of assisting the driver in the most dangerous situations. Experts claim 210 million of these ‘connected cars’ will be on the roads in 2016, four times more than today.

Renault’s triumphant first day at show FRENCH manufacturer Renault was presented with five awards at the award ceremony held on the opening day of the Frankfurt International Motor Show. A jury, made up of 10 independent members who are all design experts, presented awards in the ‘Exterior Volume Brand’ category to the Clio, Captur and ZOE. These three models have been on the market for less than a year and spearheaded the Renault brand’s new design policy. Developed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Alpine A110, also known as Berlinette, the Alpine A110-50 also took an award at the ‘Concepts’ category. Renault’s stand concept, dubbed ‘The Bump’, also won an award in the Automotive Brand Contest after taking a Red Dot Award earlier this year. Renault’s ‘The Bump’ stand concept, which was inaugurated at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, won an award in the ‘Architecture’ category. The concept takes its inspiration on
movement, recreating that feeling on the stand. The vehicles are exhibited in concentric circles around one or two ‘hills’ with turntables at the top. This way, the cars can be viewed from every angle depending on where the visitor is standing. The impression of movement created by this three-dimensional layout is enhanced by the floor covering and the lighting in the ceiling, which features balls of light moving up and down while changing colour.

James Bond submarine car sold for €643,500 A SUBMARINE car used by James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me has been auctioned in London for £550,000 (€643,500). The Lotus Esprit, also known as Wet Nellie, was used in an underwater scene in which agent 007, played by Roger Moore, escapes with Russian spy Ana Amasova, actress Barbara Bach. Although the auctioned vehicle cannot be driven on the road, it is said to be fully functional underwater.

The all-new car features Mazda’s SKYACTIV powertrain, with a standard power of 100ps at 6,000rpm and 150Nm at 4,000rpm for the 1.5litre version. Multi-hole injectors for enhanced fuel spray, special piston cavities and dual sequential valve timing make up a fuelsaving 4-2-1 exhaust system. Every Mazda 3 will come with Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) which helps to reduce or prevent low-speed collisions by automatically
applying the brakes if the driver fails to act. With a starting price of €17,750, the new Mazda 3 features MZD Connect, the company’s brand new in-vehicle connectivity concept. Designed for straightforward and safe operation, users can access Facebook and Twitter or reap the benefits of personalised location-based services. The cabin is split into separate driver and passenger zones designed for fun, non-stressful driving and a secure, relaxing passenger atmosphere. Complementing this layout is a humanmachine interface (HMI) which enables the driver
to control the car’s infotainment features without taking their eyes off the road. On the outside, the Mazda 3 inherits the lines of the larger Mazda 6. The extended wheelbase and shorter front and rear overhangs suggest performance, enhancing safety and stability while at the same time offering more room in the cabin, and boot. The signature front grille flows into the lines, while minimal gaps between the body panels provide exceptional build quality with doors that open with ease. Headlamps feature a cleanly-structured lighting signature with LEDs and a light-guiding ring.

FINALISTS: Closely contested sessions which served up some cracking bowls for spectators.
Javea Green results SIX finals were closely contested at Javea Green last Thursday and some absolutely cracking bowls were served up for the spectators. The first session saw the two Rinks Finals played in some torrential rain with Matt Taylor, Greg Sperring, Alan Phillips and Tony McKenna defeating a BBC team. The Ladies Rinks was a much tighter affair with just 10 shots being shared over the first 10 ends.
However the team of Olive Lutz, Jenny Rich, Carol Davey and Jo Morris picked up a five and were able to hold on to the lead. The next session saw Mary and Bob Cockell race into a seven shot lead and then narrowly hold on for a one shot victory. The Mixed Triples match finished all square after 18 superb ends before the team of Jo Morris, Carol Davey and Ken Davey won the
deciding 19th end. The final session was the two singles matches with Christine Mawson playing brilliantly to win her match, while the Men’s Singles went to the last wood and despair for Greg Sperring who thought he had won the match when he took the jack from the holding shot, only to see it drift to another wood which belonged to Trevor Neale who was duly crowned Champion.
