BOTOX is becoming more and more popular among younger women. A study by American network ABC News found that more 20something women are turning to the cosmetic treatment as a preventative measure against ageing, with the number of women in their 20s getting Botox rising 10 per cent in the past year. Injecting the wrinkle filler at such a young age has raised debate. Dermatologist Dr Jeanine Downie from New Jersey (USA) says that starting early has the advantage of preventing wrinkles from occurring altogether, but the president of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons refuses to give Botox to women under the age of 30.

A study has found that the average British barbecue holds twice as many germs as a toilet seat. WOMEN who have hot flushes during the menopause do have trouble with their memory, a report has confirmed. Researchers at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University in Chicago, US, tested the attention and recall of 68 women. All were aged between 44 and 62 and each woman was experiencing at least 35 hot flushes a week. The women were also asked to complete questionnaires about their menopause symp-

toms, mood and memory. The results revealed that the women who had the most hot flushes performed worst on the memory test - and the worse the hot flushes, the longer the period of memory loss. The findings back up support previous research on menopauserelated memory loss. Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Centre in New York found that fluctuating levels of female hormones can affect the memory.

Fizzy drinks can ruin teeth DRINKING large amounts of fizzy drinks can do as much harm to your teeth as taking crystal meth or crack, according to a recent study. However, it would take huge amounts of soda to have the same effect. The study conducted by Doctor Mohamed Bassiouny, a professor of restorative dentistry at the Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, cites a woman in her 30s who drank two litres of soda a day for nearly five years. According to Bassiouny, she had the same amount of dental damage as a 29-year-old meth user and a 51year-old crack addict.

FTER homes, cars are many people’s most expensive purchase. When it comes to the secondhand car market, prices can vary considerably across regions. In this exclusive snapshot survey the EWN newsteam found a 2010 VW Golf automatic, with a 1.4 litre petrol engine for €12,900 in Mallorca. A similar car in the Axarquia could cost as much as €19,500.

Our price comparison on the Costa Blanca found some widely varying prices of cars within a year or two of each other, including the Seat Ibiza. Alister Jenkins from Costa Cars explained that this often happens when a newer model is released: “In 2010, Seat introduced the new shape Ibiza so these will cost a lot more than the older shape.” Prices are more consistent across the garages which largely work to book-price guidelines, then just take into account condition and mileage of the vehicle when fixing the price. Private prices varied the most and some of the most expensive prices we found were on private listings. Alister said purchases through garages are still preferred by many expatriate buyers: “They like to buy from garages so they know the car is debt-free and comes with a warranty and includes all paperwork.”

While some people are suspicious of dealers, EWN found the most expensive vehicles in Almeria were generally on offer from private sellers. Dealers tended to have a more realistic view on pricing, preferring to keep cash flow moving rather than have expensive vehicles sitting on the forecourt for months.

Even though Mallorca is in recession, people are buying new cars because of some exceptional offers to clear stocks. With the used car market overflowing, it is always best to shop around with so many cars for sale. Condition, year of manufacture and how many kilometres the car has done play a big factor, but it most certainly is a buyer’s market.

The Costa del Sol saw some of the biggest price differences for similar cars. For example, a 2004/5 Mercedes CLK Convertible automatic 2-door cost €30,000 from one Marbella seller. But a similar car could be bought for €12,495 elsewhere on the Costa del Sol. Part of the variation can be explained by a 100,000-kilometre difference in road use, but a €17,505 price difference may seem a bit steep to many.

Axarquia The Axarquia is an area where vehicle sales can be seen to have dropped due to the economic crisis. Garages are struggling to clear the forecourts of new and used cars.

1 Turn a blind eye

The phrase ‘turn a blind eye’ dates back to a legendary chapter in the career of the British naval hero Horatio Nelson. During 1801’s Battle of Copenhagen, Nelson’s ships were pitted against a large Danish-Norwegian fleet. When his more conservative superior officer flagged for him to withdraw, the one-eyed Nelson supposedly brought his telescope to his bad eye and blithely proclaimed, “I really do not see the signal.” He went on to victory. The phrase ‘turn a blind eye’ persists to this day.

The myth dates back as far as the 14th century and comes from a book called ‘The Travels of Sir John Mandeville.’ The book includes a description of crocodiles that notes, “These serpents sley men, and eat them weeping, and they have no tongue.” Mandeville’s account of weeping reptiles later found its way into the works of Shakespeare, and ‘crocodile tears’ became an idiom as early as the 16th century.

It should be brought back for premeditated murder and for killing police officers who are just doing their job.” “When there is no doubt at all that they did it then, yes, the death penalty should be brought back.” That was the thought of retired couple Robert and Diane Smith on holiday in Rojales, Alicante, from Plymouth, UK. “The death penalty should be available for premeditated murder, especially child killers and terrorists.” Kevin Kearney, who is self-employed in the construction industry, is on holiday in Rojales from Warrington, UK, and believed that by imposing the death sentence on the culprits of the Woolwich stabbing, it would not make them martyrs. “I think for that sort of crime the death sentence should be brought back. By putting them in prison for life we end up paying for them,” he said.

However, while fast food outlets are expected to continue to see explosive growth in China, that growth is actually slowing. David Zhang, China Research Analyst at Mintel, said, “Much of the growth to date has continued to benefit from a perceived ‘novelty factor’ enjoyed by fast food as the segment expands into smaller cities in China. “Greater transparency will be the key to maintaining market share, as Chinese consumers begin to demand more information about ingredient sourcing and food preparation.
