Hospital workers take to the streets By EWN Newsdesk
WORKERS at a residential care home have taken to the streets in protest at unpaid wages. Staff from the Bartolome Sanchez Moreno hospital marched to the town hall in Oria to protest that they have not been paid for nine months. The 45 patients, some of them suffering from the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, were not left unattended, as a skeleton crew remained behind for compassionate reasons, and
the facility will continue to operate, but with reduced manpower. The protestors presented a letter to the mayor of Oria in which they claimed that ‘Oria Town Council do not want to know anything about our situation, they have not visited us or assisted us in any way. We feel abandoned by the municipality.’ In an exclusive interview, the mayor, Marcos Reche Galera (PP), confirmed that he had sympathy for the protestors but that his hands were tied.
“The hospital workers are paid directly by the private firm who won the contract to administer the hospital. “They in turn are paid from central government funds. I have no jurisdiction over when and if they are paid.” A spokesman for the Office of Health and Welfare has confirmed that Urban Geriatric SL, the private management company, was last paid in October. A spokesman for the hospital workers stated that it was time to withdraw the franchise.

Police round up 8 rural crooks GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested eight people on fraud charges totalling â‚Ź1million. The allegations involve crimes against public finances and social security, forgery, abusing the rights of foreign citizens, receiving stolen goods and money laundering. More than 30 farms in the region have been raided and their owners accused of employing illegal labourers falsifying
documentation and tax avoidance on sales. The Civil Guard investigation also established that five of the detainees were cultivating stolen plants after examining 340 samples collected from different greenhouses in the area. By examining the DNA of zucchini, pear, tomato and aubergines, they were able to establish a link to plants earlier reported stolen.

Russians were 59 per cent positive, while at the bottom of the poll were Singaporeans (46 per cent happy) Armenians (49) and Iraqis (50). Wealth clearly does not bring happiness, with economic indicators placing Singapore fifth in the world for Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while Panama ranks a much lower 90th. The young men are alleged to have removed 400 metres of electrical cable which was supplying power to a cluster of homes in the Molino de la Huerta district of the town. The stolen goods turned up a few days later at a scrapyard in Cuevas de Almanzora and the officers were able to follow a trail back to the alleged thieves.

Immigrant’s body found POLICE have discovered the body of a Senegalese man who disappeared on February 11. The man avoided being questioned by police patrolling the beach by hiding behind a car, and was last seen running towards the sea. Dense fog and heavy seas hampered the officers, whose pursuit led them eventually to a pile of clothes on the beach. The body was discovered 12 days
later, floating in the sea. A subsequent post-mortem examination was unable to determine the cause of death. A large number of the victim’s countrymen, carrying their national flag, demonstrated about the immigration laws. A spokesperson for the Human Rights Association had earlier confirmed that the man, known as Max, was an illegal immigrant and the subject of a deportation order.
Recycling education A SCHOOL in Olula del Rio is involved in a national scheme to educate children about recycling. The Rosa Navarro secondary school will participate in Recycle Day, a campaign which endorses educational initiatives for the conservation of natural resources and the promotion of sustainable development in the field of education. Rajoy blasted by local mayors FIVE mayors representing Almanzora Valley constituencies have publicly criticised the Spain’s prime minister. The consortium, speaking on behalf of the voters of Albox, Seron, Bedar, Vicar and Los Gallardos, have rejected the reform of local government that Mariano Rajoy and his PP government are cultivating. In his state-of-thenation speech Rajoy had promised a ‘second wave of reforms’ to stimulate the waning economy, as well as measures aimed at calming the widespread agitation caused by alleged corruption scandals within his administration. He spoke also of the severe economic hardship which had resulted in six million unemployed. These reforms will lead to redundancies in the public sector, according to the quintet of PSOE (Socialist) representatives. Adela Segura, Secretary of Institutional Relations for the PSOE, stated that “services should be re-centralised because there is widespread evidence that privatisation does not reduce costs.” Segura warned that “the PSOE has calculated that 4,000 public sector jobs will be lost in the Almeria region.”
Local jobless to research past TWELVE unemployed residents of Lubrin, all of them over 25, will participate in the launch of the town’s Ethnographic Museum. They have enrolled in a government-sponsored
workshop which teaches the design and management of tourism facilities, revitalisation, and public relations. Other course topics include IT training, gender equality, risk assessment,
and business skills. The mature students will attend almost 2,000 hours of lectures spread over a 12-month period, and be paid the equivalent of oneand-a-half times the minimum wage.
Their exploration of the cultural phenomena of the immediate area will record the systems and cultural life of the people, and be reflected in the museum’s writings, photographs and artefacts.

Jewel theft SUSPECTED armed jewellery thieves have been apprehended after police traced stolen articles to a shop. The thieves broke into the home of a 74-year-old widow and her 33-year-old daughter, forcing them to hand over valuables and money totalling €2,500. Armed with accurate descriptions of the precious stones the officers were able to trace the goods to a gold-seller, and arrests quickly followed.

Establishing a corporate identity for one of Spain’s key holiday destinations is of paramount importance to the mayor and her colleagues, as they strive to impress tour operators worldwide of the area’s unique appeal. Recognising that tourists shop for holiday destinations online, the brochure will be available to download in English and Spanish. Facebook users have not been overlooked. Almanzora Valley Trail a challenge
A MAJOR sporting event will be staged in the region during April. The Almanzora Valley Trail is a two-day event aimed at promoting the region as a sports tourist destination. Supported by local clubs and federations, it will take place between April 13-14, when cyclists, athletes and hikers will be challenged to take the test of endurance. Cyclists will have 150 kilometres of trails and up to 120 kilometres will be covered on foot. Sporting events in Spain energise the tourist sector and the Almanzora Valley will be no exception, said organiser, The body promoting the event is adopting an international outlook and dreams of the Almanzora Valley becoming a landmark for tourismsport globally.

Zumba party raises €1,100
PATRONS of cancer charity MACS turned out in force on Saturday night in Mojacar to show their support. The event, organised by fitness guru and qualified Zumba instructor Alison Bramwell, invited backers from all over the region to dance to the salsa beat and party into the night.
As if being diagnosed with cancer were not enough, some patients have the added burden of living with the disease in their adopted country. “We have numerous examples of cancer sufferers who are unable to integrate with the Spanish healthcare system due to inadequate paper-

FIFTEEN Garrucha students have been awarded diplomas in protocol. The course taught the accepted code of procedural behaviour in particular situations. Lecturers at the Municipal Centre of Culture addressed topics like etiquette and the handling of situations in the work environment. More space for university THE president of the Junta de Andalucía has opened a new auditorium on the campus of the University of Almeria. The 6,000-square-metre construction, which overlooks

Andalucia Day TODAY (Thursday) is Día de Andalucia (Andalucia Day) which commemorates the February 28, 1980, referendum on the Statute of Autonomy of Andalucia. This is when the Andalucian people voted for the statute which made Andalucia an autonomous community of Spain. Andalucia is composed of eight provinces: Sevilla (the capital), Malaga, Granada, Cordoba, Almeria, Huelva, Jaen and Cadiz. It is the most populated of the 17 autonomous regions in Spain, with 8,449,985 inhabitants, and the second largest in the country with 87,268 square kilometres. There are 771 municipalities in Andalucia. The regional body which governs Andalucia is the Junta de Andalucia.
The emblem of Andalucia shows Hercules between two columns which legend places in the Strait of Gibraltar with an inscription at his feet reading ‘Andalucia for itself, Spain and Humanity’ and an arch above him reading ‘Dominator Hercules Fundator’. The flag was created by Blas Infante, with green as the symbol of hope and unity, and white for peace and dialogue. In many parts of the region, people decorate their balcony with the green and white flag and events are held on February 28 in town and city halls throughout the region. Unwanted guests THE ‘botellon’ is an emotive subject in Mojacar and one which has galvanised public support for the mayor. The phenomenon of thousands of youths flooding into Mojacar during summer weekends to drink cheap booze at beach bottle parties has caused considerable damage to the business community, says the ACEM business association. Now bars and restaurants will be discouraged from selling drinks which are not consumed on their premises after 9pm as well as plastic cups and ice. ACEM’s President Karin Schroter has asked the mayor to put up signs warning of a bottle ban all along the beach-front area with a reminder that fines for breaking the law have been increased.
Cheapest homes in Andalucia A FINANCIAL institute has revealed that Almeria Province has the lowest house valuations in Andalucia. The average home has 90 square metres of living space and is valued at just €50,000. The average tenant has a gross income of €1,200 per month. Numerous financial advisors have set up offices specifically to lead bargain hunters to the most lucrative areas, whilst some banks are
offering online auctions. In Cuevas de Almanzora a bank is offering a 140-squaremetre townhouse for €78,000 which comes with a free iPad! Last year house prices fell by 10 per cent in Vera whilst just down the road in Garrucha they actually rose by 8 per cent. In 2012, house prices fell by 9.5 per cent in Andalucía, one point above the average for the Almeria region.

A MERIDA policeman saved the life of a fiveyear-old who was choking on a sweet. The Local Police officer, who works with a unit that issues and renews ID cards, heard a woman screaming for help in the adjoining waiting-room and went to investigate.
Her son was choking on a sweet, the mother cried, as she unsuccessfully pummelled his back to dislodge it. The policeman grabbed the child and performed the Heimlich manoeuvre. The offending sweet was dislodged, and the five-year-old’s life saved.

Eastern connection in €24m fake goods raid HACIENDA impounded 35 tons of tobacco, 300,000 designer fakes and also blocked 233 bank accounts. All originated with a network of Chinese importers operating in the Valencian Community now accused by Spain’s tax authority of fiscal fraud, money laundering and forging documents. Between confiscated merchandise and bank accounts approximately €24 million is involved, Hacienda said. Eleven people have now been arrested in Alicante, Valencia and Barcelona. Supervised by the Valencia courts, the operation was launched in May last year after Customs’ officers inspected seven containers ostensibly loaded with granite sheets. Inside they found 35 tons of loose tobacco worth around €4 million. Enquiries led them to a group of businessmen who distributed merchandise imported from China to trading estates in Cobo Calleja (Madrid) and El Carrus in Elche (Alicante). The Cobo Calleja complex is already implicated in another massive tax and money-laundering fraud that came to light in October last year. This, too, involves Chinese importers and distributors but has further ramifications of drugs and prostitution.

Airport owner looking to offload British assets SPANISH company Abertis is considering offloading Cardiff, Luton and Belfast airports from its assets. The group owns Cardiff and Belfast airports and operates Luton under a long-term deal. Abertis, which either owns or runs 29 airports around the world, is carrying out a review of all its airport businesses. It has signed up AZ Capital and Citi to look into the division, valued at £900 million (€1.02 billion) with the possibility of a sale or part sale on the agenda.
At the moment the Welsh Government is undertaking a due diligence process with the aim of buying Cardiff Airport by next month in a deal worth about £50 million (€56.9 million). However, if a deal cannot be sealed Abertis could put Cardiff Airport up for sale alongside its other airports. Abertis’s portfolio currently includes telecommunications, car parks and motorways. In Spain it has been hard-hit by the recession with big falls in toll road revenues.

The contest has struggled financially for some years and was not held last year. Fall in trade union income and members THE CCOO trade union is losing members and money. By the end of 2012 the union had 1,143,000 members, 60,309 fewer than in 2009 when membership peaked at 1,203,309. Revenue has fallen correspondingly. ABOUR market reforms are heralded at home and abroad as the basis for Spain’s improved economic performance. The shake-up, announced a year ago has reduced labour costs and made exports more competitive, although this has come at a price. Collective bargaining between employer and employees has been John Keynes radically deregulated while wages have been cut. Cheaper, easier dismissal has destroyed more jobs than it has created. These reforms are one of the few election promises that Mariano Rajoy has been able to keep. But they have not reduced unemployment and they merely redistribute the few jobs that are available, wrote Bob Hancke in The Guardian, recently. There is also growing unease outside Spain, which its European neighbours see as a new and aggressive competitor, whose low labour costs will invite future investment. “For every job in the ‘competitive’ Spanish car industry, another is gone in the French, Italian, Belgian, Swedish or German,” wrote columnist Bob Hancket. “Beggar-thy-neighbour policies of this kind never increase the number of jobs, as Keynes pointed out more than 75 years ago,” Hancke continued.

Historical step to nationhood better than squabbling states I SHOULD have been writing this and other articles from the UK, where I was expecting to spend some time, undergoing nonurgent medical treatment. But, as Rabbie Burns wrote: ‘The best-laid plan o’ mice and men gang oft agley’, and so it has been with me. My flight was booked, my pick-up at Gatwick arranged and my taxi to the airport this end ordered, all to no avail when my old heart decided to take a holiday, forcing me to make a hurried visit to ‘Emergencias’ at Torevieja hospital, my first experience of such a move. Now, unless you are one of those suffering Munchausen’s Syndrome, this is never going to be a happy time, but I have to say the staff could not be faulted. Tender loving care seemed to be top of the list, and although the many tests to which I was subjected were sometimes less than pleasant, the doctors and nurses rendered them bearable, and I was almost sorry when, after five days, they told me I could go home – but not to the UK, since I am still in no condition to fly. This was my first personal experience of the Spanish Health Service and I can only say how pleasantly impressed I have been. I hope I was a good patient and that I did not stretch the staff’s patience too far. Whilst in hospital with nothing better to do, I bought and read

several newspapers of various political views, finding it interesting how the same items of news are reported, or at least approached, including that of Cataluña’s proposed – or threatened, rather – separation from Spain. Now, I don’t usually write about this, feeling as I do that it
is a purely internal subject better left to the Spanish people, but one columnist – I won’t give his name, or that of the paper for which he writes – came up with some comments that I thought quite profound. He is clearly antiseparatism, his arguments being that as far as much of the world - including Europe believes, Spain has not moved on very far from the civil wars of the 19th century, and that this opinion has, and still does, tended to colour the way some Germans, French, Britons and others regard the nation and its people. Of course Spain has moved on since then. The post-Franco transition and constitution has broken through the almost traditional ‘estado de excepción’ that afflicted the country for centuries, to become not a group of squabbling states, each thinking itself independent, but a NATION. The Spanish nation that has abandoned its historical malevolent past to become a strong, proud European state. Perhaps the Catalans and Basques should consider very carefully whether their own pseudo-national pride has the right even to consider overturning such an historical advance. I shall say no more, suggesting only that a National vote might be the course to follow.

Still waiting for mains water four months on I LIVE in Fuente Amarga and I was conected to Galasa mains water, that was until the deluge. It is now over four months ago and we have been without water ever since. The torrent that swept down a gully exposed the pipework, which was just black rubber hosepipe. That being the case, the replacement of broken pipes should not be that difficult. After the first month of having to travel to fill bottles with water, I contacted Galasa only to be told that my details would be passed to their engineers and they would contact me! I have now repeated this five times and am still waiting. Now I and others have received a bill from Galasa for service charges! Is it legal to charge for a service that is not there? When you consider that only two months after the dreadful Japanese tsunami they had new roads and rail systems and water, are we living in a truly Thirld World country ? Its readership tends to be influential and its habitat Catalan social and business watering holes. It pays to listen to its prognosis of current affairs. Carlos Carnicero is an astute observer. BRITAIN’S hard-pressed Scottish Power energy consumers may be forgiven for giving a cool reception to the news that they are contributing considerably to the Spanish economy. Spain’s energy giant Iberdrola, the owner of Scottish Power, reports strong performance from its foreign operations. Scottish Power is the biggest contributor to Iberdrola outside Spain. The Spanish parent company showed a profit of €2.84 billion last year. This was no thanks to the home operation. In Spain demand plummeted by 36 per-cent. There’s still gold to be found in the lochs and braes.

Retaining the right to live in Spain T
HE death of an EUcitizen, departure from Spain or annulment of marriage or civil partnership does not affect the right to live in Spain of the non-EU citizen. Non-EU citizens can reside in Spain as seen in last week’s edition if they are married or in a civil partnership with an EUcitizen. If the EU-citizen dies, the non-EU citizen can remain in Spain as long as they lived here before the death and must inform the authorities of the death.

If the EU-citizen leaves Spain or dies, their children can continue to live in Spain, as well as the parent who retains custody, while they remain in school here. If the couple divorces or ceases to have a civil partnership, the non-EU citizen must advise the authorities and
Tips to face a breath test

Useful information There is no obligation to register the death of a British national overseas with the British Consulate-General. However, doing so means a British form of the death certificate will be made available to the relatives of the deceased, and that a record of the death is held at the General Register Office in the UK.

EBATING the state of the nation is superfluous for much of Spain’s population. For them, abstract debate in Madrid is window-dressing by the government and an ineffectual PSOE opposition. They have their own opinions and regarded Mariano Rajoy’s predictable promise of anticorruption measures as a sop. He scrupulously avoided mention of the former PP treasurer, Luis Barcenas, who stashed away a fortune in Switzerland and recently used Rajoy’s fiscal amnesty to launder some of it. Despite sacking him in 2009 for involvement in the Gurtel politicalfinancial scandal, the PP continued paying his social security payments until last December. The man who doled out salary top-ups from PP party funds clearly had to be looked after. Mentioning Barcenas and some of those – including Health Minister Ana Mato’s ex-husband – who were paid with Gurtel money, would have been like shouting in an avalanche zone. BUDDY HOLLY grew up on the forlorn Western Texas plains about as far away as imaginable from upbeat music centres or downbeat metropolitan cultural cores. Buddy’s sound was his own. It was new, rebellious, had an inventive beat and rhymed with the times. His friends formed a group, and from their first recording Buddy Holly & The Crickets were a success. Just about every decade since Buddy’s tragic death one of his songs is re-recorded to remind us of his unique style and our loss with his 1959 death still honoured in the uncanny early 70s’ Don McLean hit American Pie that lives on today. Many still remember the tune and most of the words: ‘A long, long time ago, I can still remember, how that music used to make me smile. And I knew if I had the chance, That I could make those people dance, And maybe they’d be happy for a while. But February made me shiver, With every paper I’d deliver, Bad news on the doorstep... With rock music young in the 1950s, the only way to make it grow was to roll it out to the masses. A bus tour was arranged in the winter of 1958-59 and the books say it ended in Mason City, Iowa, where I grew up. But Buddy’s last venue was in nearby Clear Lake. After performing, Buddy hired a plane from Mason City to fly that night to Mankato, thereby resting before the next
day’s show. Also on the plane was the Big Bopper, whose Chantilly Lace had been in the
charts for months, and chart-topping Donna singer Ritchie Valens. But Buddy Holly was the biggest attraction. Pilot Roger Peterson, a 21-year-old with four years flying experience but uncertified for instrument flying, was not told of weather advisories predicting low visibility in snow and fog. Shortly after take-off, Peterson was forced to depend on the instruments of the single-engine plane with no lights or landmarks visible. After dropping out of view about four miles from the airport tower, all attempts to contact the plane by radio failed. On February 3, the crash site was located in a snowy field. The Music had died. Buddy Holly had lived for just 22 years. February always makes me shiver, and reminds me of my favourite Holly song: ‘The sun is out, the sky is blue, there’s not a cloud, to spoil the view But it’s raining... raining in my heart.’

From the Pope to Queen Beatrix, everyone wants to abdicate F
IRST Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands announces her abdication. Then Pope Benedict XVI suddenly declares that he’s also resigning, the first Pope to do so since 1415. Followed by calls for King Juan Carlos of Spain to abdicate, too. Is there something in the air? Is abdication/resignation contagious? Might it even sweep across the Channel to the British monarchy, given that Queen Elizabeth II, who’s a year older than Pope Benedict, has just celebrated her Diamond Jubilee? The answer, we know, is a firm no! But it does leave open the question who we’d like to see abdicate/resign, now that a precedent’s been set. There are many who’d like to see the back of David Cameron and Nick Clegg (and not just members of the opposition). Equally, many Labour supporters fancy their chances without Ed Miliband.

But who to replace David Cameron? William Hague? Definitely not! George Osborne? Pleeze! Well, how about Education Secretary Michael Gove? He’s regularly attacked on all sides. For his U-turn over the EBacc. By historians for his too ‘narrow’ history curriculum. And by his own civil servants who threaten strike action over his planned departmental cuts.
Now, Michael Gove’s got his faults and, of course, not every part of his proposed reforms will turn out perfect, but at least, he has the guts to take on the vested interests, the lefty-obsessed teachers’ unions, the local authorities and, increasingly, his
own colleagues. If only more ministers had his vision, energy and backbone. Since the days of Shirley Williams and her doctrine that noone’s a failure, everyone’s a winner, the end of the right of teachers to discipline students
and of any sign of authority, the standard of British education has nose-dived. Add to that the daft desire to send everyone to ‘university’ with inflated grades, even if they’d be much better served in a tech college or apprenticeship presumably designed by previous governments to massage the employment figures - and the educational system’s now in a right old mess. There are many fine teachers doing an all but impossible job but they seem all too often overwhelmed by forces beyond their control. Maybe Gove’s got lessons for everyone … In the meantime, who would you like to see resign? A hard life in film business ANOTHER great weekend has passed. My friends and I made a music video. One of them, Samuel-Fraser, is a film-maker and had recently ordered a special crane to which a camera is attached and can be manoeuvred in all directions. He wanted to try it out so suggested filming a group of us together for a video. Arriving at his house, the gates to what I thought were the entrance to the urbanisation were in fact the gates to his house. Parked in the expansive driveway – comp-lete with a central water feature – was an array of luxury vehicles. There were two doors to choose from, both grand wooden doors with intricate carvings. I chose the bigger one on the left, which was in fact the entrance to the kitchen. In there were a selection of freshly-prepared dishes; pasta, steak, sushi, lobster and various

vegetable accompaniments. I was somewhat taken aback as I know from previous experience that Samuel-Fraser’s attempt at cooking was putting bread in a toaster and only mildly burning it. Also I was informed that his parents were away on business for a month, but was advised that their live-in cleaner/chef had prepared the dishes earlier that day. I knew Sam’s parents had
money, but a live-in team of waiting, cooking and cleaning staff was a new high for me. How wonderful not to have to lift a finger, to have people waiting on you hand and foot hour after hour. Back to the party and SamuelFraser came to greet me as I entered the house – thankfully as there was row upon row of corridors and doors – and led me into the living area where many of
my friends were already congregated. Songs from the nineties played on the vintage jukebox while we were served cocktails by more of the live-in staff as we quietly reminisced about the past week. The flowing drinks slowly turned the friendly conversation into raucous laughter, and so the filming began. After more drinks – each stronger than the last – and lots of dancing, we were led downstairs into the basement. There was a cinema-room-cumbar-cum-dance floor complete with a disco ball and neon lights. After more hours of shooting, we moved the party to another area in the basement, where stencils and spray cans were provided allowing us to decorate the walls with whichever design we chose. At one stage, I can remember someone riding around the room on a bicycle. Twelve hours later, the shoot was complete. And to celebrate wrapping the music video? A relaxing sauna. Pure bliss.

EARING light summer clothing my friends and I relax on a sun-drenched restaurant terrace. The table service meal is €10 and reasonable wine €4 for the bottle. Our feet tap to the melodies of a gifted pianist. It is mid-winter. I remind my friends that Britons work damn hard 50 weeks of the year to spend two weeks doing what we do for 52 weeks of the year. “I cannot understand it,” I surmise. “Why do Britons who can move here not do so?” My friends think people lack the courage to do so. I ran it past neighbours; they agreed. When I retired, my move to Spain was much looked forward to. I loaded my car, rendezvoused with my son and off we scorched. I did have familiarity with the area but most Britons do. It was suck-and-see and the outcome was that life in Spain exceeded my expectations. Typically, a couple sold their home in the UK; used half to buy a better property here and banked the rest. Their savings would see them through until their pensions kicked in. It was simple common sense. In a spirit of generosity, I used this to encourage others. I knew

they had the means, but I was wasting my breath. Many people do become institutionalised and unable to cope outside a prison, country or work environment. Many think better the devil I know than the devil I do not. They fear the unfamiliar and accept their lot with mixed feelings. Before retirement, I was dragged to what passed as a social club in an English city. This breezeblock shed was the most depressing experience of my life. The décor was tatty. A framed 1953 picture of Her Maj’ clung to smoke-stained peeling wallpaper; the beer was overpriced and

New research shows that skipping is one of the best ways of banishing hunger pangs and reducing calorie intake. The study involved volunteers taking part in various forms of exercise to see which had the most powerful effect on appetite. Researchers from the Waseda University in Japan concluded that skipping is the most effective way to reduce calorie intake. Their theory was that the rapid ‘up and down’ movement in load-bearing activities, such as skipping or running, disturbed the gut and possibly interfered with the release of hormones that govern appetite. The volunteers were asked how hungry they felt through experiments and were also tested for levels of hormones in their blood known to be involved in controlling appetite.

By Brian Sherwood I DROVE down to Mojacar to meet up with my EWN colleague, the prolific author and local quizmaster Tony Matthews. We both follow our hometown football team and watch all their games live on TV. On the way I decided to stop off for lunch, and never having visited the town before, opted to break my journey in Turre. It looks a conservative place until almost at the top of the High Street on the right-hand side is a bright yellow awning that announces The Kash Bar. Most 21-year-olds only think as far as redecorating their bedroom, but bachelor Ashley Stebbing - originally from Morecombe in the UK - took over the bar five weeks ago and has completely refurbished it. The sociable rugby league fanatic radiates a typically friendly Lancastrian warmth and is anxious to please. I ordered the all-day breakfast, which is not for the faint-hearted and should come with an annual subscription to WeightWatchers! This was a transport cafe, not

cherry pie was a tempting offer, but instead I relaxed with a glass of chilled draught beef on the bar’s wide sun terrace. It turns out I could have stayed there all afternoon as Ashley has access to any of the live Premiership games on his three HD television sets scattered throughout the bar, all linked to the Al Jazeera network. The comprehensive menu caters for families with children, whilst the town’s twenty-somethings have a separate pool room and bar of their own in which to mix and swap stories. It’s encouraging to meet an earnest young man who has realised his aspirations at an early age and is eager to make his mark in the catering business. All that is lacking is the super-model to share his dreams. Life is a real PIN in the neck
IFE used to be so simple, not so now. Hasn’t information technology changed our lives, as now the more we evolve the more complicated it becomes to keep our information safe? Safe from hackers, thieves, data protection laws, everything really, even ourselves. Nothing much happening if you don’t have a PIN (Personal Identification Number). You are, without a doubt, noone without one. I can’t tell you how many PINs I have as I really don’t know and can’t keep track as many are doubled up because I have them for personal and work use: logging in/out (from PCs, laptops and tablets) email addresses (I have eight), Facebook (I have five accounts), Twitter,

True that now we can’t live without all those PINs as they are the key to our life. No wonder we go mad if we lose our phone, if our bag/wallet is stolen or lost. I am losing my head trying to remember what PIN it was, and mad because I am annoyed that I never remember them
and have to reset them every two seconds! I love technology, but this aspect I’m not sure makes our life easier. In fact, it makes it more complicated. Roll on the day when everything can be done with eye recognition. As, at this rate, my neurons will be used up trying not to forget and then trying to remember where I left that disguised PIN number on my phone, or the ‘little black book’ or if that little piece of paper dropped out of my wallet. I remember when (the 80s maybe) we had no PINs: we didn’t have mobiles; we signed vouchers when we used our credit cards; we went to the bank to get our cash or do transactions; we had to go to the library to get our information, and we only watched four TV channels.

GENEVA: 130 new cars THE GENEVA Motor Show will have 130 cars premiered there this year. The 83rd edition of the Geneva International Motor Show will be officially opened on March 7, by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Ueli Maurer. Some 700,000 visitors are expected to attend the 11 days of the exhibition. Before that, more than 10,000 representatives of the media from all over the world will be there to see all the latest cars. Ten per cent of the 900 vehicles
being exhibited will be ‘green’ powered. A series of conferences regarding the future of vehicle transportation will be presented by 10 different experts. The Geneva International Motor Show, which provides an open showroom for the world to the latest technologies and designs, is one of the five most important automobile exhibitions in the automobile world. This year the show will present more than 130 World and European Premieres from the
private vehicles market sector. Amongst the new exhibitors is Qoros, a Chinese brand that has chosen Geneva to launch its products for Europe. McLaren will also present its range of sports cars based on its motor sports technologies. Gloria the right concept for Alfa THE European Institute of Design (IED) in Milan will unveil its new Gloria concept, developed in collaboration with Alfa Romeo Style Centre, at the Geneva motor show.
This takes the sports sedan concept and gives it a beautiful shape via a traditional Alfa grille that feeds into the hood’s prominent Vshaped character lines.
Two leather hood straps in front of the windshield are a nod to the brand’s older models. Its flanks feature a heavily concave surface
and an exaggerated rocker, while the beltline stretches from the top of the front wheel arch. That creates, say designers, a soft wave effect before straighte-
ning as it feeds into the horizontal rear lamp strip, which stretches the visual width of the car. Its cabin appears to mix traditional Alfa themes – such
as the pair of cowled instruments and red, black and chrome colour and trim – with modern electronics.
