Anger as finance controller resigns TO lose one financial controller is unfortunate, but to lose two in fewer than two years is an outrage, say opposition politicians. Opposition party members in Partaloa have expressed ‘outrage and concern’ following the resignation of Mario Alley, after less than a year in office. His predecessor was in the job for only four months following the elections. An opposition spokesman believes the “ruling team’s pressure to answer alleged illegal acts has played a pivotal role in the decision.” The matter is currently being dealt with
by a legal team representing the Junta de Andalucía. Its spokesman has criticised four councillors accused of planning misdemeanours as well as of granting building licences for undeveloped land. The Association of Secretaries, Comptrollers and Treasurers of Local Administration of Almería (COSITAL) described as ‘serious’ the resignation of Alley. Critics of the Partaloa administration claim that following the last election none of the elected officers had the experience or qualifications and the deposed mayor, Alejandro Lopez, was the only experienced politician capable of doing the job.

As night falls in Vera, the beleaguered police chief is forced to juggle his roster of officers if one of them calls in sick, whilst others are attending an incident. Staff cuts have left him with no slack in
the manpower department, and he is forced to determine his priorities. The public come first, a result of which is that the station and its incumbent community of felons are left to fend for themselves. According to a union official representing the police officers, “the local inspector of police is
giving orders that border on illegality. “The police are forced to stop guarding the detainees and go on patrol or attend incidents, thereby violating the basic principles set by law.” The union claims that in the event of a tragedy in the jail, the police would be directly responsible.

An easier ride to Mojacar Pueblo MOJACAR is to have an elevator. This summer visitors to Mojacar Pueblo will be able to traverse the steep rocky incline on which the village sits, to a viewing platform offering an amazing panorama of the surrounding area. The town council launched a competition to find
the best design and a local architect submitted the winning blueprint. The two-stop elevator will start at a ground level tourist information centre, and climb to a tree-lined plaza which forms the entrance to the old town. The project is expected to be completed by June.

Priors awarded €30k damages THE drama surrounding Len and Helen Prior has taken a new turn following a court decision to grant them €30,000. “This is a very important landmark,” Mrs Prior told EWN in a recent interview. “By making this award the Ministry of Justice has admitted for the first time that the original verdict by Judge Jesus Rivera was categorically wrong. Had he performed his judicial duties properly and in keeping with the law, the demolition of our home would never have taken place,” she commented. The demolition took place in 2008 after the Junta de Andalucía invalidated the couple’s building licence. Now a Madrid court has instructed the Ministry of Justice to recompense the couple for the violation of their rights. It was in April 2004 when the licence was revoked but

Unbelievably, Judge Rivera had ruled in favour of the demolition without hearing any mitigation on behalf of the party affected, or even making an acknowledgment that they existed. He presided over a court that counsel for the defence was not permitted
to enter. The court in Madrid ruled that the Priors had a fundamental right to be represented and that Judge Rivera was wrong. Mrs Prior expressed satisfaction with the award, although the couple will only receive half of the compensation, as the rest will be swallowed up in legal costs.

Care home staff set strike date PAY negotiations have ended in stalemate at a local care home. Staff at the Bartolome Sanchez nursing home in Oria have named a strike date. A unanimous decision was reached after an eighth month passed without them receiving any wages. The decision to strike on May 25 was a tough one to make given the predicament in which their 45 patients will find themselves. Everyone at the home needs roundthe-clock supervision and many have special needs in the form of medication. The problem has occurred due to the government of Andalucía not paying the private contractor Urban Geriatric which won the bid to administer the facility. A domino effect has left staff unable to pay their mortgages, household bills, and travelling expenses.

A consortium of 22 different associations, all of them promoting the revitalisation of Almeria City, has branded the Ministry of Culture’s decision misguided and unjustified. In an interview with Spectrum FM, she stressed that the sympathetic approach adopted last year had not worked, as some bars and chiringuitos had ignored her perfectly reasonable request to turn down the volume.

“It should take two weeks to issue.” The mayor confirmed that licences for bands playing at charity concerts would be exempt, even if the programme ran over the stipulated time limit.
Asked if inspectors will have a scale of decibel levels to adhere to, the mayor replied: “No. It’s what we think. It depends on whether the neighbours have any complaints.” The mayor went on to confirm that closing times would be strictly enforced this summer, and in her opinion this would not have a negative effect on tourism.

Waste plant deal THE infrastructure of Albox is about to receive a boost. The Provincial Council of Almería has announced the construction of the waste management facility to be built on landfill on the outskirts of Albox and operated by the Waste Management Consortium of Almanzora, Levante and Los Vélez. Pine forest problem HUÉRCAL-OVERA council is concerned about an invasion of moths threatening its pine forests. The Pine Processionary is a cream coloured moth with brown markings on its forewings. It is found in abundant numbers in the pine woods of central and southern Europe, and is a pest that is normally active between May and July. The caterpillars of the species proceed through the woods marching in nose-to-tail single columns. They should never be handled as the abundant hairs on their bodies cause extreme irritation to the skin and can cause allergic reactions to susceptible individuals. Spraying pesticides to control them is only effective during summer months.

Numerous activities have been arranged during the first three days of March including a medieval market, a musical performance of Aladdin for the children, and an official ceremony at the theatre.

Wage cap to be set for local mayors THE National Government has approved a report which advocates a cap on Almanzora valley councillors’ salaries. Recommendations by
the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration decree that the mayors of municipalities with under 1,000 inhabitants will no longer be paid a wage.

Regarding chief executives in major conurbations, their annual pay will be limited to between €80,000, paid to those making decisions on behalf of more than a quarter of a million residents, and €20,000 for mayors governing a population of more than 1,000. Another
objective of the Government report is to establish a standard tariff for all municipal service charges throughout the region as well as a code of good practice, in an attempt to eradicate inefficient and outdated methods.

A green light for €1.5m golf school A SCHOOL for golfers has been given the green light, estimated to cost €1.5 million. The Ministry of Culture and Sport has approved the addition of a driving range to the El Toyo golf resort, located next to the Cabo de Gata National Park, and just five kilometres from Almeria airport. The 60,000m² development of the course will also include locker rooms, a medical centre, offices, a classroom, cafeteria, eight tennis courts and increased parking facilities.

New nature trail planned A POPULAR nature garden in the centre of Huercal-Overa is to have a face-lift. The heavily used communal park features a playground, picnic area, green space for games, and an animal sanctuary. Lately, local residents have petitioned the council to remove the animals for health reasons, which is why the refurbishment is taking place at a cost of €10,000. “We have decided to restructure and improve the area by taking advantage of the resources available,” commented a council spokesman. A nature trail incorporating an artificial stream and natural vegetation will be created on the site where the animal pens were located. A fountain, bearing the town’s coat-of-arms will mark the beginning of the trail, adjacent to which will be an artificial lake surrounded by lowmaintenance fauna. The project will enhance the existing recreational space for town dwellers and visitors alike, whilst benefiting from the educational effect through the signage of different plant species and information on the historical use of water throughout the region.
Health alert for British tourists BRITISH tourists visiting Spain can face medical bills for thousands of euros if taken ill while on holiday. Yet one in 10 over 55-year-olds fail to take out travel insurance even though more than half suffer from a medical condition. The British Embassy in Madrid announced that 35 per cent avoid taking out insurance because they are ‘only going on a short break’, 27 per cent claim it’s too expensive, whilst 18 per cent refrain
because they believe they are covered by their bank. A British Embassy spokesman, said: “All British visitors to Spain, including over-55s, need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Apply on the NHS website for free or call 0845 606 2030. However, an EHIC does NOT cover all your medical costs. Film set hospital fails to pay its way AN empty Madrid hospital used only for filming costs €875,000 annually in upkeep. When the Puerta de Hierro hospital was moved to a new building in upmarket Majadahonda in 2008, Madrid’s regional government had planned to use the former installation as a hospice. The onset of the economic crisis prevented the regional government from embarking on the project, said the Health department. Meanwhile, maintaining the hospital has absorbed €897,000 of each annual Madrid Community budget. Municipal taxes account

Kitchen worker accused of poisoning 14 colleagues A KITCHEN assistant, 55, was arrested accused of attempting to poison 14 colleagues at the restaurant where he worked in Gijon. He was remanded in custody by a judge on suspicion of committing the crime due to arguments with his colleagues. He is charged with 14 counts of attempted manslaughter. The investigation began in October. He was suspected because the only two people not to fall ill were he and his partner, who also worked at the restaurant. He allegedly put drops of a pharmaceutical product used to create an adverse reaction to alcohol in his colleagues’ food. It causes sweating, fever, migraine and a super-fast heart rate when combined with alcohol. In May 2011, the owner of the

Wife on porn killing charge A SPANISH woman was arrested in Pennsylvania (USA) for allegedly killing her husband after she caught him watching porn. The woman has been remanded in custody for allegedly stabbing her husband, former basketball player Matthew White, to death, in their

home while he slept. She claimed she saw him watching a porn video with young girls in it, went to the kitchen for a knife and stabbed him in the neck. She has been charged with first degree murder for killing White, who formerly played for CB Valladolid.

The 58-year-old woman was admitted for an operation for gall stones at the Santa Tecla Hospital in Tarragona in July 2011. A big white elephant THE airports of Castellon, Ciudad Real and Huesca have a worthy rival in Murcia. The first has never seen an aircraft and the other two are closed while Corvera Airport - the ‘International Airport of the Murcia Region’ - has yet to be opened. The €266 million project was finished a year ago and, like Castellon, was intended to receive streams of tourists - in this case principally British - expected to visit Murcia’s coastal resorts and inland urbanisations. Alicante Airport is only 75 kilometres away from Corvera and passenger aircraft now land at the San Javier airbase-cum-airport which is even nearer. Nevertheless, the regional government approved the Corvera project in 2006. It was built by a consortium headed by Sacyr Vallehermoso, which will run it for 40 years.
CORVERA AIRPORT: The €266m project is yet to open following its completion one year ago. Despite belonging to the Murcia Community the airport would not require ‘one euro of public money’, announced Regional President Ramon Luis Valcarcel. He might have spoken too soon, as in 2008 the consortium found itself in financial difficulties thanks to the economic crisis.
The regional government has had to guarantee a €200 million loan, a daunting prospect for an autonomy which had to request a €527 million bailout from the central government last year. Meanwhile, Corvera, like Castellon, is an expensive white elephant.
No more grants to study abroad THE Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport will do away with grants to study
abroad. The grants to study foreign languages abroad during the summer will be swapped for 500 language immersion programmes in Spain. Last year, the ministry spent €24 million on grants to study foreign languages abroad and in Spain which allowed 14,000 university and professional training students to carry out courses in Spain and 2,000 high school students to study foreign languages. Meanwhile, 93 per cent
of Spaniards admit that learning English is their “pending subject” according to a report from Cambridge University Press. Only 10 per cent of Spaniards speak fluent English and only 20 per cent see themselves capable of communicating easily in English. This is one of the main obstacles which stop them from going abroad to find work, and 60 per cent say they would do so if they spoke English. Sixty-four
per cent also say that not knowing a foreign language influences their choice of a holiday destination. Experts believe that one of the main reasons for Spain’s lack of English knowledge is that for years, films and TV from Englishspeaking countries have been dubbed into Spanish. In other countries, such as neighbouring Portugal, programmes and films are shown in English and almost everybody speaks the language.
Prestige spill still affecting Galicia CRUDE oil from the Prestige disaster continues to reach Galicia’s beaches. The ship sank off Galicia in November 2002, spilling 77,000 tons of oil and polluting thousands of kilometres of coastline in Spain, France and Portugal. Investigators led by Professor Ana Bernabeu from the University of Vigo, are now compiling the findings of yearly inspections carried out between 2004 and 2011. They visited two of the worst-affected beaches - Nemiña in Muxia and O Rostro in Risterra - and inspected dunes “once or twice a year for periods of up to three days,” Bernabeu said.
“There were always lumps of crude oil below the high-water mark on the O Rostro beach,” the professor explained. They were occasionally found at the Nemiña beach, she added. “These lumps are a continuing occurrence,” agreed Bernabeu and other experts. “There is no way of estimating the volume,” she said, “but plans should be drawn up for dealing with them. “Taking into account the limited amount that is found, a clean-up programme would require little in the way of money or human resources. A study of prevailing currents would also enable experts to predict which areas were most at risk,” Bernabeu said.

Although consumption was reduced, Spanish families spent €70,700 million - or 0.6 per cent more - than in

This had helped the company to increase efficiency, he insisted.

Still confused about driving licence medical certificate Q: I AM hoping that you can explain exactly what David Searl meant in his column two weeks ago regarding the medical certificate for driving licences. Then you must change it for a Spanish licence as you cannot renew your UK licence because you are not resident in the UK. 1. Your medical certificate you carry with your UK licence does not expire in three months. It is valid for 10 years. Unless you are over 70 years of age, in which case it is valid for only two years. 2. Now, if, and only if, you are applying for a Spanish driving licence, or the renewal of one, then the medical certificate is only good for three months. That is, if you do not complete your application within three months, you must obtain a new certificate. 3. It does not matter whether your certificate states it is valid for three months or not. All such documents are valid for only three months, as noted in paragraph 2 above. I hope this helps to clarify the situation. Industrial base is absolutely essential for Spanish hopes READERS might recall that in a previous article I set out the idea that, to have a stable and successful future, Spain had to forget the old times of property bubbles and floods of tourists. Instead it should concentrate upon establishing an industrial bedrock to underpin the economy, a manufacturing base to develop, not only full employment, but also a profitmaking ethic capable of financing it. The present level of unemployment in Spain, particularly with that for young people (under 25s) running at more than 51 per cent, should be seen for what it is: the result of successive governments, both Socialist and Conservative, having focused only upon day-today topics leading up to the next election. Problems have been left to fester until they have become almost incurable ulcers in the body politic. This laissez-faire attitude has proven itself to be dangerous, and once confronted and overcome – which must be the case if Spain is to have a viable future – should never be allowed to show its face again. Spain must break away from the old, seductive comfort zones. They have gone; the damage has been done, and future governments must ensure that such short-sighted cupidity never again infests the national mind. Let us imagine for a moment what Spain might come to if nothing is done to correct past mistakes. It is doubtful that the

‘property bubble’ would ever be re-inflated, not for a very long time anyway, seeing that just about every square metre of the Mediterranean coastline already lies beneath bricks, mortar and concrete. But suppose some powerful group of international financiers should look upon Spain with a different money-making plan in mind? Instead of apartment blocks and villas, what if they saw the potential for vast profit if the
present co-operatives and privately-owned farms and smallholdings, stretching from Cataluña, through Valencia, Murcia, Castilla la Mancha, into Andalucia and Extremadura, were bought up and turned into huge farming factories? Highly mechanised and with their own transport and storage facilities they might have their own shops and supermarkets, operating throughout Europe and spreading the gospel of low prices. Sounds good, eh? But such vast tracts, planned to maximise profits, would require far fewer people. The others? Well, what would a few more added to the roll of the unemployed matter? Then Spain really would become that which I forecast earlier, that is the food-producing reservoir of low-paid, unskilled labour that highly-developed industrial groups have always required. You think I’m seeing the world, not through rose-tinted glasses but through cobwebs? Well, it has happened in the past, and will again. It occurred in Great Britain as the 19th century Industrial Revolution gathered pace, and in Germany a few years later. The commercial rivalry between these two great powers was the true fuse that set off the conflagration of the Second World War and brought the United States of America into the equation. Now, while 21st century China and India endure their own industrial revolutions, the world teeters.

We have warned for some time that increasing longevity will lead to higher taxes, and the UK government has now taken the step to increase revenue as part of its reform of the cost of social care for the elderly. On 11th February Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt confirmed speculation that the inheritance tax nil rate band – the amount of your estate your heirs can inherit tax free – will be frozen for several more years. This is effectively a tax rise in real terms because of inflation. The move is quite a contrast to the Conservative Party’s preelection promise to raise the threshold to £1 million per individual. If you are a British domicile, UK inheritance tax is charged on your worldwide estate at the time of your death, plus any assets you gave away as gifts over the last seven years. Since it is based on domicile rather than residence, British expatriates with estates above the threshold continue to be liable for this tax, unless they have successfully adopted a domicile of choice in their new country of residence. UK Inheritance Tax Bills To Rise by Bill Blevins, Financia l Correspondent, Blevins Franks
Changing your domicile is hard, but not impossible if you intend to live in your new country of residence permanently and cut ties with the UK. You need professional guidance because getting it wrong could be very costly for your heirs. You should also consider how any local inheritance tax rules interact with the UK rules, and a specialist firm like Blevins Franks will guide you through the rules in both countries and how to lower your tax liabilities. The current nil rate band is £325,000 per individual. Spouses and civil partners have a potential combined threshold of £650,000. The tax rate is then a fixed 40%. In the past, this threshold increased each year with inflation.
It has however been frozen since April 2009, an austerity measure introduced by the then Labour administration. The coalition government confirmed in the 2012 budget that there would be no change until at least April 2015. As part of the Autumn Statement last December, Chancellor George Osborne announced that the threshold would increase by 1%, rounded up to £329,000, from 2015. 1% was lower than the rate of inflation, but it was better than nothing. Just a couple of months later, however, this has been overturned. The threshold will now remain frozen until at least 2019 - that will be 10 years with no change. This was announced as part of the government’s plans for funding care for the elderly. It proposes that from 2017 a cap of £75,000 will be introduced on the costs people pay for care. After this the state will take over the costs. The inheritance tax freeze will fund around 20% of the costs. Changes to pensions and National Insurance are also expected to contribute to the funding. It is calculated that freezing the threshold until 2019 will bring an
extra 5,000 estates into the inheritance tax net, earning the Treasury an extra £1 billion tax revenues each year. If the threshold increased with inflation, it would reach £420,000 by 2019. This means that families could lose an extra £95,000 from their inherited estates in 2019. The government argues that this is a fair system as people will not be forced to sell their home and/or use all of their savings to pay for care. Many more people will gain from it than lose from it, it claims. On the other hand, the Chief Executive of the Taxpayer’s Alliance, Matthew Sinclair, commented: “This sleight of hand from the Chancellor is unfairly punishing families who simply want to leave something to their relatives when they pass on. “Inheritance tax is a double tax on assets and income that the taxman has already taken his cut of many times over.” He agreed that the government needs to address the future cost of social care, but said this should not be by going back on its word and introducing higher taxes “by the back door”.

Create your own job SPANIARDS are becoming their own bosses in an effort to escape the economic crisis. Between 2008 and 2011 more than 625,000 self-employed had to give up, according to government figures. But last year, as the unemployment rate climbed above 26 per cent, 53,000 newly registered
self-employed made their numbers rise rather than fall for the first time since 2008. These entrepreneurs created 72,000 jobs, said Lorenzo Amor, President of the small entrepreneurs’ association ATA. “For the next few months it is going to be easier to create your own job than to find one,” Amor said. He added that in Spain 67 people an hour register as self-employed. But in these tough times it is hard to keep a new business going. Just THE number of people who used planes to travel half of new businesses within Spain fell by 12.5 per cent in 2012, while train are still running after passengers fell by 2 per cent, according to the three years. Even if it’s picking flowers from gardens, mixing the petals with water and selling it door to door as perfume. This is the start of entrepreneurialism and creative thinking that could make a person rich in the future. A child that doesn’t begin to understand the value of money early in life is in for a tough lesson on dealing with finances in the future.
Mystery shoppers shop Santander SPANISH banking giant Santander’s UK division is suspected of providing clients with flawed investment advice, according to internet rumours. The UK’s Financial Services Authority (FSA) has ordered an in-depth investigation of Santander UK, claim industry sources. Between March and September last year, ‘mystery shoppers’ from the FSA paid 1,231 visits to six banks and building societies, posing as potential customers. “A major high street bank” was referred to its enforcement division, the FSA announced. It could face a fine or licence changes preventing it from providing these services in future. But as yet the FSA has refused to reveal which bank is involved. Santander

Time to learn a lesson in honest politics I’VE lost track of the corruption cases involving Spanish politicians or other public servants. The worst is that the average Spaniard on the street is now so used to it that they almost automatically accept their daily dose of political scandal with resignation. The word ‘transparency’ recently coined by Barack Obama enjoyed a certain amount of popularity here until Spain’s voters discovered that their political representatives were economical with the truth. So much so that the word transparency might as well be eliminated from the Spanish dictionary. It would be worthy of a Marx Brothers’ movie if it were not so tragic. I humbly but urgently suggest that Spain’s politicians take an example from Obama’s honesty before its irate voters abandon the polling stations like rats from a sinking ship. Weevil solution THERE is a simple, safe and cheap preventative measure against red palm weevils which has been tried with some success in Castellon. It’s to spray a diluted mixture of turpentine (aguaras) on the fronds, top centre and at the base of plants
likely to get infected. The weevil is killing palms, and the black version, agaves, yuccas and aloes. This application doesn’t cure infected plants, it apparently keeps the bugs away because they hate the odour. The turps should be diluted about one part to five of warm water. How often the spray should be used I don’t know. Probably every month or so or after heavy rain. Chuck (by email)
SINCE the no smoking in public places law was introduced, there has been a dramatic increase of terrace coverings, with gas heaters and in some cases a door fitted to enter the premises. This covers entirely all tables and chairs placed outside some restaurants and cafés. This forces the non-smoker to go inside. Is this area classified as inside or as an outside smoking area? WE received a visit from two alleged gas inspectors. They insisted that they had right of access and if we refused then we would be denounced and face a €2,000 fine. They were told to depart and off they went with many glowers and muttered threats. A few days later, we heard gravel crunching and the sounds of conversation. There was a loud bang and on reaching the lounge we found a piece of firewood protruding into the room between the door and frame. My wife shouted, and we heard footsteps running. By the time we got out of the cottage there was nothing to be seen except slashed fly screens front and rear. We called the police who were with us in 15 minutes. Excellent service. Telly’s now crammed with ‘edgy’ so-called chefs and shouty attention-seekers. Accomplished classic cookery teacher that she undoubtedly is, I suspect the main reason for hanging up her TV pinny has less to do with her professed dislike of TV as ‘entertainment’ or even her age (after all, she’s six years younger than the ubiquitous Mary Berry) but because she’s been refused TV work by the BBC. On the one hand, she chose to stay off TV for years between series in order to concentrate on highly paid commercial work and deals with leading supermarkets.
like Nigella or Jamie (unless you have massive cleavage or a mockney accent, the BBC aren’t interested, apparently!). Rare is the programme aimed at serious cooks who want to see more complicated techniques, more esoteric ingredients but without today’s TV whizz-bang production values that worship style over content.

Moreover, you don’t need Delia to tell you how to cook that stuff. It says so on the packet. That series, too, included snippets of her personal life and religious philosophy, turning many people off. Basically, TV cookery shows broadly fall into three categories.
Those that cater to people who are clueless about cooking. Delia is for this group. (She was quite right to begin with how to boil an egg!) Celebrity chefs who do restaurant food; interesting but impractical for home cooks to copy. (Blast chillers and vacuum sealers, anyone?) Finally, those with a gimmick,

T is 32 years on Saturday - when democracy was just two years old in the new Spanish constitution since a civil guard coup attempt failed in Madrid. On February 23, 1981, Spanish television viewers were treated to a few minutes of high drama. As 220 heavily armed civil guards took control of the Cortes (parliament) in Madrid their leader, Lt-Colonel Antonio Tejero made his way to the central parliamentary chamber and, waving his pistol in the air, informed the deputies that their “ineffectual” services to the country were no longer required. January – one of the longest months of the year – is finally over. The dreaded Valentine’s Day has thankfully passed. I took a two-day hiatus on all social media to avoid seeing any flowers, presents and romantic dinners being enjoyed by all the couples in the world, making it as painless as possible. And now my birthday is a little over two weeks away, I have to start thinking about how I’m going to celebrate. Each year, my family throws a huge party in my honour and fly all of my friends to Marbella. We always rent out a different discotheque each year, exclusively for my party. The week leading up to the big day is all about me, choosing my

CYNIC asks a newspaper columnist if aspiring authors actually make money from selling their books. They do, and the chances of recouping their outlay are far higher than returns offered by many other investments. There are no guarantees that a book, film or television series will be successful. Like new fashions or newspapers, they are acts of faith. Wilbur Smith and Jeffrey Archer cross their fingers when their latest title rolls off the printing press. Amazon-Kindle and e-books have provided a level playing field. New authors, who in the past would have received wads of rejection slips, now collect wads of banknotes whilst well-known authors fail. Most people spend on indulgences like photography, painting, learning a language, horse riding; taking on a pet for life. Do cynics ask, “Do you actually make money from that?” Of course not, but writing a book costs considerably less. It is a feat, most authors recover their outlay and many do well out of their book’s success. When introduced as an author there is always the ‘Wow Factor’ response. Tell them instead you

They would never get round to it and if they did it would fail. Good books are written with passion. If it were otherwise, it would be as fruitless as attempting to sell a product you do not understand or have a belief in. Writing a book, painting a picture or creating a sculpture are triumphs that bring out the best in us. Such achievements are therapeutic and nothing
quite matches the feeling you get when you see your accomplishment in its completed form. When you spend money on a sport or holiday, all you have to show for it are photographs and memories. An expensive piece of jewellery is someone else’s gift, not yours. These are personal indulgences. The author, sculptor or artist shares their achievements with others. Their works are enduring. Today we get pleasure from books, movies and we enjoy listening to beautiful music; we marvel at works of art that were created by paupers who, at the time,
laboured under passionate self-belief. Yesterday’s libraries and art galleries are stuffed with biographies and pictures of famous, but boring people. Because of advances in publishing, posterity can now look forward to sharing the lives of today’s not so famous, but who lived lives that are far more interesting. Imagine if today we could read first hand accounts of servants who lived ‘under the stairs’ of stately homes, travellers who journeyed steerage, soldiers who served in the Peninsular Wars. This is the legacy that today’s authors leave to the world. What will you leave to posterity?

OSE LUIS GONZALEZ, a 56-year-old salesman from Madrid visiting family in Altea thinks it’s a waste of money to pay for more rehab, but also considers footballers can afford it. “Since footballers are so ridiculously overpaid they’re not likely to miss the money, are they?” he said. Spanish resident Sito Fabrega Navarro, who is the president of Albox Football Club, said: “Footballers can spend their money where they like. If they want to drink themselves to death it’s their choice.” Recently retired Oria resident Wilhelmina Rice said: “George Best was given a new liver and it didn’t stop him. These footballers should be like Alan Sugar and give their money to Great Ormond St Children’s Hospital.” Roger Davies, a retired mechanic from Benalmadena was surprised to hear the news. “Where is his family when he needs help? Maybe they have given up on him after all these years of abusing himself.” Meanwhile Tony Quintero from La Marina felt that Paul Gascoigne has made enough money over the years to pay for his own rehab. “It would be nice to
know a few famous people who would be willing to pay for their mistakes.” He added: “I do hope he gets sorted out, but I think the money could have been better spent going to charity.” Alicia Pico, a student at Alicante University, had never heard of Paul Gascoigne. Once the Euro Weekly News briefed her on the troubled footballer’s career and his failed attempts at rehabilitation, Alicia felt compassion towards him. “Everyone deserves a second chance,” she said. But Terry Matthews a resident of La Marina feels Gascoigne should pay for his own rehabilitation. “He should take responsibility and sort himself out, it is not down to anyone else.” Fuengirola resident Simon Canales believes there is no hope left for Gascoigne. “After hearing that he was drinking two litres of gin every day and his massive drug binges, I don’t think he can ever recover mentally or physically.” PAUL GASCOIGNE: Undergoing rehab.

It’s chilly here but soaring temperatures in the UK THE winter weather on the Costa coastlines has not been anything to write home about. My fleece has not been off my back. With night-time temperatures at just 10c, I became something of a recluse. According to Spanish media, it has been the windiest winter for 20 years. Considering the wind - chill factor, we can presume it has hardly been the warmest. I had a right to feel sorry for myself. That was until I read the headline of a UK newspaper. ‘Temperatures set to soar to 10c’. I suppose it is a matter of expectations and perspectives.

Prince Charles guest editor of Countryfile anniversary show P
RINCE CHARLES will edit a special edition of Countryfile to mark the programme’s upcoming 25th anniversary. Filming for the episode, which will air on BBC One in March, has been taking place at the Prince of Wales’s organic farm in Gloucestershire since September. The heir to the throne will also be seen visiting a number of farmers and other external projects around the UK, including an inner-city school where children grow their own vegetables. “It’s our 25th anniversary and we were looking for a special way to mark that and [the prince] was very much up for that,” Countryfile executive editor Bill Lyons told BBC News. “We’d heard a rumour that Countryfile might have some viewers in very high places and as it turned out, Prince Charles
through.” Jane Featherstone, chief executive of producers Kudos Film and Television, said she was ‘sad and disappointed’ by the BBC’s decision. The first series of The Hour launched with 2.89 million viewers in July 2011, but the show’s second run fared less well in the ratings, opening with just 1.68 million.

Come dine with me at El Molino By Brian Sherwood THOSE of us who love food and dining-out have become absorbed in the reality TV programme Come Dine With Me.
Five people take it in turns to cook a meal for each other with all of the culinary disasters, gaffes, and anti-social behaviour it entails. Dining-out in a restaurant is not so different in as much as the owner ‘invites’ you to let him prepare a meal for you and during the evening provide entertainment. In effect, he is asking you to ‘come dine with me’. El Molino was recommended to me, in Santopetar, a village on the outskirts of Taberno. ‘Where?’ was my first reaction. ‘Twenty-five miles away from my dwelling!’ Proprietors Jane and Brian Lowden run a taxi service for diners, and from what I could gather distance is no object. First impressions always set the tone for the evening. A log burner in the corner provides a burst of warm air, whilst you are seated at sturdy, highly-polished wooden tables and chairs. The tablecloths are quality linen and the cutlery sparkled. You can also eat alfresco in their fly- free outdoor patio area. Despite having 45
covers, the waitress listened attentively to our requests. I am fussy about my steak. New Albox mayor facing the crisis THE new Mayor of Albox is facing an economic crisis. Thanks to the support of his party and the rest of the socialist government in Albox, former trade union leader and deputy mayor Rogelio Mena (PSOE) was handed the chalice of power. Albox is facing an economic crisis of epic proportions. Whether his strategy is to avoid liability or accept responsibility remains to be seen. His first action will be to find a way to pay the salaries of the council labour force. Their long term future looks bleak, as Mena has talked of early retirements, voluntary redundancies, reduced working hours, and the

For months teams have been meeting to plan and design their costumes and this year the Department of Culture at Albox town hall have pulled out all the stops to present a wide range of activities to suit every age group. The party got started last Saturday when the annual parade was called to order by the Bateria. Starting in Plaza San Francisco, the procession snaked its way around the town, ending with a party at the Municipal Sports Hall. Every group took it in turns to go on stage to display their costumes.

Divorce is stressful for family dogs too DIVORCE is a sad fact of life. These human problems can cause stress to dogs. A dog is a social animal bonded to a family routine and way of life that relies on us for their mental, physical and emotional welfare. Dogs of course are frequently denied consideration when it comes to difficulties in relationships. When couples shout and argue with each other this will indeed affect the dog (and also the cat). Nervous behaviour is often caused by the owner’s actions. Whenever I am called to a home where owners have a howling, barking, destructive, digging, housesoiling dog, or one showing symptoms of an anxiety-related behaviour, I always ask if there has been a death, separation or indeed a divorce which could have triggered the problems. This behaviour is a typical expression of canine anxiety. Another extreme behaviour pattern is dogs going to the bottom of the garden and staying close to walls, which is often seen when a dog’s instinct tells it that it is dying. In the

Dogs are creatures of habit and function to our timetable - wake-up time, meal-time, bedtime, playtime,
etc. Some dogs find it harder to accept a change of routine than others and it is especially hard for the older dog, who may go downhill rapidly when faced with the upheaval that accompanies divorce. Photos from its Middle East launch in front of VIPs in Bahrain show the ‘mean street racing car’ concept of the British company’s team of designers. McLaren calls the cabin ‘minimalist’ in its design, and the carbon fibre used throughout the interior is there for function as well as to look good. You’d be hard-pressed to find anything that isn’t necessary for performance.
There’s no wood trim, no metallic accents and no leather-wrapped dash. In fact, spartan may be a better word to describe the interior than minimalist, and the full-on race-carfor-the-street look probably won’t appeal to all potential buyers. While the driver is surrounded by everything he needs and nothing he doesn’t, the passenger is left looking at a vast expanse of carbon fibre. To save weight, the P1 forgoes interior sound deadening and makes lightweight carpeting an available option. The racing-style seats use minimal
padding, and their carbon fibre shells deliver a weight of just 10.5 kilograms each. Though standard seat belts are fitted, anchor points for six-point harnesses are also included. Even the seat recline function is limited, with the seats offering a 28 degree from vertical setting and a 32 degree from vertical setting, to accommodate helmeted drivers. The seat height (for driver and passenger) is determined at the time of ordering, though this can later be changed in the workshop. Unlike a race car, however, the P1 does make concessions to civility and occupant comfort. There’s a standard climate control system, as well as a navigation system and an audio system developed specifically for the P1 by Meridian. The car’s glass canopy maximizes outward visibility, allowing precise placement while also opening up the cabin.

Hang on to your seats as F1 season is getting set to start By Tony Matthews THIS year’s Grand Prix Formula 1 season is the 64th in the competition’s history. Recognised by the sport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), it’s the highest class of competition for open-wheel racing cars in the world. Eleven teams and F1 highest class open-wheel racing.
22 drivers will contest the 19 scheduled Grand Prix races. The first Grand Prix of 2013 will take place in Australia. Practice sessions will be held on March 15, qualifying will take place 24 hours later, with the main race itself following on Sunday, March 17. The last race will be staged in Brazil on 22-24 November. This year’s Formula 1 season is the last whereby cars will be allowed to use the current 2.4 litre V8 engine configuration. A 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 engine formula will be introduced for 2014.
Sebastian Vettel will start the season as the defending champion, having clinched the title in the final race of 2012. And his team, Red Bull Racing, will be the defending World Constructors’ Champions, having secured their third consecutive title at last year’s race in the USA. The following teams and drivers are contracted to drive this season, subject to ratification of a new Concorde Agreement, chief Bernie Ecclestone having announced every team had agreed ‘in principle’ to the terms of the new Agreement.

Wind factor THE wind was a factor on the golf scores this week for some players. However, on Tuesday the winners had some experience on how to deal with it as Ian Cooper and wife Jean are members of Nefyn & District Golf Course, a hilltop golf course on the coast of Wales. Along with Christine Banks they won the day. On Friday Paul Jones with 36 points was the winner closely followed by Sue Hull (35) Lawson Langley also had (35).

In the Champions League, Manchester United drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in Spain while Celtic crashed 3-0 to Juventus at Parkhead. SIX NATIONS rugby is back this weekend with unbeaten England playing France and Italy meeting Wales on Saturday, followed by Scotland against Ireland on Sunday. Also on Sunday, around 70,000 fans will watch Premiership side Swansea City contest their firstever major cup final when they play underdogs Bradford City in the League Cup. Bradford’s last final appearance was in the FA Cup back in 1911. The Welsh club lost 5-0 at Liverpool in a Premiership match five days ago!
