Baby murder suspect ews Nwatch on suicide watch Sweet event A MAN accused of killing a baby girl is being kept on suicide watch in a special secure unit. Jonathan Moya Gonzalez, aged 25, the alleged killer of 16-monthold Miriam in rural Almeria, was taken to El Acebuche Prison when initially detained on December 29. But he has now been transferred to
a special protection unit after being identified as being at risk of violence at the hands of other inmates. Moya is also on suicide-watch, and is never left alone. A special ‘companion inmate’ shares his cell and is trained to act in case he tries to take his own life.
Also being held in the same unit is Raul RF, who is alleged to have helped cover up the crime. Moya was arrested after 100 policemen spent seven days searching for Miriam. Guardia Civil officers claim Moya admitted the killing and told them where to find the body.

And her success last year did not end there, for Marina was also named ‘Golden Andalucian Woman’ by the Andalucian Sports Journalists Federation. The 27-year-old professional windsurfer almost won an Olympic medal five years ago in Beijing when she finished fourth in the women’s event. The following year she won the Women’s RS:X World Championship in Weymouth, UK, adding to five European Championship wins in Cyprus, France, Israel, Poland and Madeira between 2007 and 2012. Population keeps on growing THE population in Almeria Province has broken the 700,000 mark for the first time. There are now 704,000 people living in the province, according to figures just published. That is more than 15,000 higher than the 688,736 recorded by the national statistics institute (INE) in 2011. In Almeria City the population rose from
190,349 in 2011 to 191,443 last year. Roquetas de Mar’s population grew from from 89,851 in 2011 to 90,358, according to the municipal register, or padron. On the other hand, El Ejido has seen a population drop of almost 2,000 in two years. Almeria City is the provincial capital with the highest birth rate on the Spanish mainland with
its average 1.6 children per mother only surpassed by Ceuta and Melilla, with averages of 2.15 and 2.35 respectively. A big factor behind the provincial demographic increase, according to the INE, is that most of the immigrants in the province come from Arabic cultures, which have higher birth rates than Western ones.

ALMERIA’S Department of Culture Leader Maria Vazquez has unveiled the trailer that will collect nonperishable foods to be delivered to Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria’s Tinduf region. The trailer, which belongs to the Amigos del Sahara (Friends of the Sahara) association and is known as the Caravana por la Paz (Trailer for Peace), aims to match last year’s collection of 15,000 kilograms of rice, sugar, oil and other non-perishable foods, which will be transported to Alicante from where it will be picked up by Sahrawi people for the last leg of the journey. The secretary and coordinator for the initiative,
Maria Ramirez, said: “The situation in the camps is getting worse every time as the refugees have a total dependency on international aid.” So she is asking the people of Almeria for help. Food can be donated until the end of February at the Amigos del Sahara headquarters on Calle La Venta 5 in Aguadulce although donations can be picked up by association members by calling 661 971 520 or 661 971 521. Also, those interested can take their donations directly to the trailer, which will be at the Carretera de Alicun at the level of El Parador, between 10am and 6pm as well as help with the loading.
Volunteering can ‘open new doors’ A TOTAL of 20 volunteering initiatives in EU countries were promoted by Almeria’s Department for Economic Promotion and Employment in 2012. According to Economic Promotion and Employment Leader Amos Garcia, the number of volunteers sent out last year is twice the number sent between 2008 and 2011 and as many as those sent in the last 10 years. He stressed the importance of the experience for the volunteers: “Not only is it an enriching experience for them which boosts their curricula, it also opens new doors for them in regards to embarking on self-employment projects in Spain or finding work abroad.” Most of the projects are of a social and cultural nature but also on international relations and cooperation for development, and they took place in Bulgaria, Turkey, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Poland, Greece and Italy. Both were charged with possession of illegal weapons and drugdealing, with JMA also being charged with an alleged violent robbery offence. Further investigations found that JMA had acquired the phone from 20-year-old BPD, a British national living in Albox. A search of his house led to the recovery of a blunt object allegedly used in the robbery. BPD was arrested for an alleged violent robbery offence. JMA and DCC have been remanded in custody after appearing before a Huercal-Overa court.

Spanish car boot sales SPANISH locals are taking to a British-style car boot sale held on the Arboleas industrial estate. They are being attracted by the low prices for thousands of second hand items that can be found including books, CDs, clothes, shoes, furniture, electrical appliances, ornaments, trinkets, antiques, and toys. The significant British community of the Valle de Almanzora region – mainly in Arboleas, Albox and Zurgena – is behind the creation of the market.
The weekly Saturday morning event has always attracted expatriates, but now it is becoming increasingly popular with the Spanish for two main reasons. Firstly, they are not used to a flea-market based on a bargaining system instead of a fixed-price one, and secondly the rampant unemployment suffered by locals in the region – one of Andalucia’s highest – drives them to take advantage of the extremely low prices they can buy many items for.

Angeles Martinez, head of the provincial government department said: “With the agreement’s renewal we intend to make skiing more accessible.” The discounts will apply to parking, equipment hire and accommodation. The Sierra Nevada Club/Diputacion card will be available at local town halls along with an access code for an online link to the promotion.
Cash boost for towns A TOTAL of €236,289 is being given to Almeria towns to help them cope with immigrants. That is more than any other Andalucian province. The money from the Andalucian Government’s Immigration Autonomic Fund was assigned to 22 towns in Almeria.
It is aimed at developing policies to improve social, cultural and religious coexistence as well as intercultural relations. Among the 22 towns, Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido and Vicar received the highest sums and had the highest immigrant population.

Almeria’s text quest ALMERIA city council will spend €13,000 this year texting residents in a quest to keep citizens informed. Council bosses have decided to launch the new service to keep mobile phone users in the city updated on matters like cultural activities and bill payment deadlines. Once registered, residents will receive text messages on relevant council issues. And a phone application will include an interface that will allow the deaf to tell Local Police to alert the fire brigade or ambulance services in an emergency. The system will not allow users to file complaints or request services like cleaning, tree trimming or furniture removal, as these actions are already possible through the Citizens Portal (‘Portal del Ciudadano’) on the council’s website.

SEATBELT and speeding offences are the main points losers for drivers in Almeria province. Despite numerous awareness campaigns, television adverts and checkpoints, speeding was the number one traffic offence for drivers in Almeria province for the seventh consecutive year. Since 2006, a total of 21,769 speeding complaints have been filed in the province, which is more than half of all driving offences. But the implementation of the driving licence points system coupled to the temporary reduction of the 120 kph maximum speed to 110 resulted in fewer fines being issued, including a 70 per cent decrease for a six-month period. The Almeria Provincial Traffic Office estimates as much as €10 million may have been collected in the province in speeding fines alone. In the last seven years the second most common driving offence in the province – with a total of 18,725 complaints – was not using a seatbelt or authorised child seat/booster cushion. In third place came drink driving.

Childbirth death is now being investigated A WOMAN died giving birth to her still-born baby after initially being refused a caesarian. Now the case has reached the Andalucian Prosecutor’s Office with calls to clarify the circumstances surrounding the tragic events. A lawsuit submitted by the Defensor del Paciente (Patients’ Defender) details how the Berja woman, aged 45, named only as JG, died at El Ejido’s Hospital de Poniente. Doctors, who knew the baby had passed away two days earlier,
had allegedly refused a caesarian to avoid ‘further complications.’ JG’s sisters now say they too had asked doctors to deliver the baby by caesarian once they had learned of its death. One of them said: “The doctor refused and told us if we were not happy with the attention provided, we ought to take our sister to another hospital.” JG had admitted herself to the hospital a week after she was due, on December 31. Once there, she remained
without being monitored until the following day when doctors discovered that the foetus had died during the night. The woman had asked for a caesarean birth straight away, but doctors allegedly refused and opted for a natural birth, even after they discovered the foetus had died. After being given birthinducing medicines, JG’s condition severely deteriorated, so doctors finally opted for a caesarean birth at the last minute.
Parents forced by courts to put son in school A COUPLE that was home-schooling their son has been told by Granada Provincial Court to send him to school. The couple, both teachers, had decided to educate their young son at home, but the Public Prosecutor’s Office considered them guilty of abandonment. The court, however, did not consider they had committed any crime, but told the Public Prosecution to follow up the case in a civil court in order to ensure the child is sent to an official school. In 2011, the boy’s school and the local town hall complained that the parents
had decided not to take him to classes. When questioned by the Public Prosecutor, the couple said that they considered his “personal and emotional development more important than acquiring instrumental regulated knowledge” and said that the current educational system “blocks his interests.” As there was no school in the area offering an alternative syllabus, they decided to home-school him. Attending school is obligatory from age six to 16 in Spain.

Murderer jailed again A MAN serving time for the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s father has been given another five years for abusing her. Almeria Court has sentenced the 22year-old to five years for battery and threats to his former girlfriend. He is already serving 10 years in jail for murdering her father in July 2010, a few days after she ended their relationship. It was proven in court that he pushed, beat, shoved, pinched, shook and insulted the woman throughout their four-year relationship and threatened to kill her on at least two occasions after the relationship ended. That caused her to feel guilty and insecure, as well as developing mood disorders. He kept threatening her even

Honey trap trio caught A MAN and two women have been jailed for assault and robbery after they sprung a vicious ‘honey trap.’ Almeria Criminal Court heard how the victim was savagely beaten unconscious after he was lured to an El Ejido home with the promise of sex. The court was told that at 1am on January 5, 2007, one of the women approached the victim offering him sexual services in return for cash. After accepting, he was taken to the garage of a house in El Ejido, where two other people waited with the intention of robbing him. The three punched and kicked the victim unconscious, after which they stole €1,700 and dumped him in the street. The man has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for robbery and a €270 fine. The women were each given two years jail for robbery and €180 fines. The three were also ordered to pay a total of €600 compensation to the victim for his injuries and to return the €1,700 stolen.

Thefts two held TWO Hospital de Poniente workers have been arrested after a string of thefts. The maintenance workers at the El Ejido hospital are accused of stealing computers, and cash between November and December last year. National Police were also investigating a series of thefts of personal items from staff lockers, as well as money from coffee and food vending machines. Police determined that all the thefts occurred either at night or on weekends and those responsible had access to restricted areas within the hospital.

Drug bust cargo ship put out for tender A FREIGHTER laid up in Almeria port for six years after being abandoned following a drugs bust is up for sale. The Oct Challenger was intercepted by customs officers and found to be carrying 4,000 kilogrammes of cocaine. Now Almeria Port Authority has put out an initial tender to sell the abandoned Finnish registered 64metre-long cargo ship for at least €125,000 by sealed bid. If there are no takers the price will be reduced by 25 per cent. Deadline for applications is Monday (January 14). The vessel, which was built in 1980, was heading to Croatia when it was intercepted by the Customs Surveillance Service in the Alboran Sea on February 14, 2007, as part of an anti-drug-dealing operation launched by Spain’s National Court. A total of 108 cocaine bundles weighing almost 4,000 kilogrammes were found in the ship’s holds, one of the biggest cocaine seizures in Almeria province.

Cyclist stopped on drugs charge A THIRTY-YEAR-OLD cyclist has been arrested by Guardia Civil near Garrucha after a search found 8.5 grammes of cocaine.
The man, known by the initials JEFF, was riding a bicycle on the A370 road when, after spotting a checkpoint by Guardia Civil, he
became visibly nervous. Officers stopped the man, who tried to conceal a shoulder bag, trying to take advantage of the dark.
A search of the bag revealed 8.5 grammes of cocaine, several medicines to cut the drug and small envelopes for distribution.

Internet porn arrests TWENTY people have been arrested and a further 15 charged for distributing child pornography. In two Guardia Civil operations covering 19 provinces throughout Spain, officers seized computer equipment and collections of videos and photos of minors which were shown and shared on websites for paedophiles. The first investigation began after Guardia Civil in Madrid detected several sites containing files with child porn and software for locating and downloading such files. Several users of the site were tracked down and 17 men aged between 21 and 69 were arrested. They were charged with prostitution and corruption of minors. Thirteen others were also charged.

Girl, 5, dies in car crash on A-92 AN ALLEGED drunk driver, 25, has been arrested in Granada, accused of causing an accident in which a child was killed. The accident occurred near Huetor Santillan in Granada Province at around 6am on the A-92 motorway. The girl, five, was travelling in a car with her family when their vehicle was allegedly rammed from behind by the detainee. She died in hospital, and her father, 41, grandfather, 75, and mother, who is pregnant, were also injured. A man who was in the same vehicle as the detainee was slightly injured. When the Guardia Civil arrived on the scene, the driver allegedly fled on foot but was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with negligent manslaughter.

Councillor’s car set on fire GUARDIA CIVIL are investigating the circumstances in which a vehicle belonging to a councillor in La Carolina (Jaen) was set on fire. Local Mayor Francisco Gallarin, who, like the councillor whose vehicle was destroyed, is a member of the Conservative
Partido Popular (PP), blames leftwing groups. The fire gutted a personal vehicle belonging to the deputy mayor, Santiago Adan, and damaged the façade of his parents’ house. It was started intentionally in the early hours of the morning.
Gallarin claims that it is just the latest in a series of violent acts against the PP carried out by leftwing groups since the night before the General Strike in November 2012. Death threats against the mayor were painted on a local wall, and another threatening
message appeared on the family home of a local councillor. On December 27, the mayor claims he was insulted and members of the left-wing group and the Andalucian Workers’ Syndicate attempted to take over the town hall. Meanwhile, the local left-wing party has expressed its support for Santiago Adan, as well as its disgust for the mayor attributing responsibility to ‘left-wing groups’.

Tragedy strikes in shopping centre
A GIRL, nine, died after falling from the third floor of As Cancelas shopping centre in Santiago de Compostela. The accident occurred before midnight when she was playing on the escalator. Her parents were having
dinner in a nearby restaurant when she climbed onto the handrail and fell. The shopping centre claims the accident was not due to a lack of safety measures. Security tapes have been handed to the court investigating the matter.

Only one Parador hotel is to close THE Puerto Lumbreras Parador, in Murcia, will be the only one to close, instead of the seven throughout Spain initially proposed by the management. Staff at ‘Paradores’ throughout Spain went on strike at the end of last year to protest the company’s redundancy plan which proposed 644 dismissals. However, the agreement reached between management and unions
following 11 hours of talks will result in 350 dismissals, some of which will be voluntary. Dismissed staff will receive 25 days salary per year worked, with a maximum of 20 months of payments. Twenty-seven ‘Paradores’ will close part of the year, for periods of two, three or four months, rather than the initially proposed five months. Throughout Spain, the Paradores employ some 4,400 people.
A COMPANY has requested that the salary of left-wing Izquierda Unida politician Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo be embargoed to pay for damages. The Asociafruit producers association has asked a court in Sevilla to embargo the salary the mayor of Marinaleda receives as an Andalucian Parliament Member to pay €483 he was fined to cover damages caused during a protest. He and 68 other members of the Andalucian Workers Syndicate entered the association’s facilities on November 28, 2008, to protest against the dismissal of 30 workers from a fruit farm. They were removed four hours later by National Police. Each of them was fined €60 to cover damage to furniture and blinds. The sentence was confirmed last October.
Car sales plummet NEW car sales fell 13.4 per cent in 2012 with 699,589 vehicles sold throughout Spain. These are the worst figures registered since 1989, despite the boost of the Plan PIVE towards the end of the year. Sales in December were 23 per cent lower than in the same month in 2011, according to car manufacturers’ and sellers’ associations (Anfac, Faconauto and Ganvam). The Plan PIVE grants to help people buy more energy efficient vehicles began in October and 65,000 vehicles were sold until the end of the year. Private sales fell 12.9 per cent to 337,948 for the whole of the year, while sales to companies fell 19.4 per cent to 224,980, and sales to car rental businesses fell by 3.2 per cent to 136,661. UK Inheritance Tax And The Expatriate Do you remember John Major telling us that he wanted “to see wealth cascading down the generations” in the UK? All these years later and inheritance tax is still with us. It remains with us even when we leave the UK to live abroad - you cannot leave inheritance tax behind you as easily as many other taxes. Your liability to UK inheritance tax is not directly linked to where you are resident; instead it is determined by domicile. Many British expatriates remain liable for this tax even if they have lived abroad for many years. Inheritance tax threshold and rate Inheritance tax is a combination of a death duty and in some circumstances a gifts tax. If you are a British domicile, it is charged on your worldwide estate at the time of your death, plus any assets you have given away as gifts over the last seven years. It is also payable on certain lifetime gifts. The tax rate is a fixed 40%. Since April 2012 this will be reduced to 36% if you leave at least 10% of your estate to qualifying charities. The first £325,000 is taxed at 0% – the ‘nil rate band’ per individual. This threshold usually increases each year in line with inflation, but as part of austerity measures it has been frozen since April 2009.

It is now scheduled to increase in 2015/16, but again only by 1% (rounded up to £329,000) instead of by the rate of inflation as in the past. There is therefore little relief for your heirs. UK assets are always liable to inheritance tax regardless of domicile. Spouses/civil partners There is no inheritance tax on assets passing between spouses and civil partners. There is one exception. If you are a UK domicile but your spouse is not, they do not benefit from the blanket spousal exception. They would currently only receive a one-off allowance of £55,000, on top of the general £325,000 nil rate band (so a total tax free allowance of £380,000). This should improve following plans announced at the 2012 Budget. If it goes ahead, from April
2013 the one-off allowance will increase to £325,000, giving nonUK domiciled spouses a total allowance of £650,000. When it comes to leaving assets to the next generation (or indeed to anyone you wish), spouses and partners can benefit from double the nil rate band. Since April 2008, any unused portion can be carried forward and used by the second partner on their death, giving a couple a potential combined threshold of £650,000. It is the unused portion that gets carried forward, rather than the actual value. So if the first spouse uses 50% of their allowance, the second spouse will have a nil rate band of £487,500 on their death (£325,000 of their own, and £162,500 from the first deceased spouse). The domicile factor Domicile is a much more permanent concept than residence. It is notoriously difficult to change your domicile, but not impossible if you have permanently left the UK, do not plan to return, have moved to a new country and plan to remain there permanently. The basic rule is that you are domiciled in the country where
your life is centred, and which you regard as your homeland. Even if you do successfully adopt a new domicile of choice, you will still be ‘deemed’ to be a UK domicile by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for the next 36 months. Also, if you or your spouse returns to the UK in future, you are likely to immediately regain your UK domicile of origin. Determining and changing domicile is complex and can be very costly for your heirs if you get it wrong, so it is essential to take professional advice. Paying inheritance tax In most cases, inheritance tax bills should be settled within six months of the end of the month of death; after this interest starts to be applied. This can cause problems for your heirs if your estate does not have enough illiquid assets, or if it takes longer than six months to obtain probate. If much of your assets are overseas, e.g. property and bank
accounts here in Spain, bank accounts in Isle of Man, etc, then probate can be particularly complicated as it needs to be obtained in each country. You may be able to use arrangements for some of your assets that do not need to go through probate and should seek advice on this. Inheritance tax is often described as a ‘voluntary tax’ since you can often take steps to lower the tax liability for your heirs. You should take advice on this, as well as on how inheritance tax interacts with Spanish succession tax. pick up the nearest mobile or to play Angry Birds on the iPad. She can turn on the television with the remote control, she can flick through photographs on the mobile phone and she can play games on the iPad. All these things she is fascinated by and if she was allowed, would spend hours doing. She’s not the only one. All the children I know are
entranced by technology. They sit glue-eyed to the telly. They whine if you
take the mobile phone from their hands and they would push buttons on the computer for hours rather than read a book.
Just the other day I saw a wooden laptop in a toyshop, that when opened, has a blackboard to colour on inside. And according to Mattel, the top-selling product in 2012 has been a mobile phone case. That suggests not only that traditional boardgames and toys just cannot compete with new exciting technology, but also that technology is taking up more and more of the children’s time, leaving less need for other toys. So does this spell the end of traditional toys? Will toddlers and children from now on be requesting a pricey tablet in their stocking rather than a Barbie doll or play truck? You’d better get saving!

I froze, unable to tear myself away from the dreadful truth unfolding in front of my eyes. How could he disrespect me in that way? I should have known that being whisked off one’s feet seldom happens in the real world, and was too good to be true for me. Clearly here was another woman - poor soul just like me - consumed by his masculinity, fooled by his words. Determined not to let him ruin my girls’ night out any more by remaining in the same club, I decided to leave, for by now it was 6.30am and the sun would soon be rearing its head over the horizon. Part of me wants to humiliate and expose him. But another side wants him to admit his sins and explain why he would risk hurting me so much. Why he appeared to treat me with such grace in the past, only to shatter my illusions of 2013 altogether. Only my dog Stella can comfort me now, and help me move on towards making 2013 start with happiness. She has always been a good listener.

Counting cost of taximen who are cheats ONCE again we have been ripped off by the taxi drivers. Today - my birthday - we went to Calahonda, had a great day, and took a taxi home to avoid drink driving. The charge was €17 for what is normally about €12. When we asked why, the taximan said: “Oh, it’s Sunday.” We need to have meters. These people need to be sorted out as expats will not come here to be taken advantage of. I lived here 28 years ago. Then there were three prices: one for tourists, another for the Englishspeaking expats living here, and a third rate for the Spanish. Today if they want to continue trying to have us over, they need to be fair, because expats will go somewhere else. I really have had enough. John Nesbitt (By email)

Illegal route I READ the feature Registering an imported car in Spain (Issue 1431) with interest. My neighbour, who has lived in Spain for nine years, has had the same car with him - on British plates - since the day he arrived. He has NEVER driven back to the UK, he has NEVER taken it for a local ITV test, and he NEVER tries to avoid any police. The reason: because he has a friend who owns a garage in the UK, who sends him a new MOT slip, or test certificate, upon request, without ever seeing the vehicle. Clearly yet more criminal behaviour by the Brits here in Spain. A law-abiding Brit Name and address supplied (Almeria)

Costa de Almería registered, we have enjoyed the tacit acceptance of the town hall and the police, because by dint of immaculate book-keeping we have proved regularly that our money was used for vet bills and food for our animals. However, in December, a new law came into place, and our group can no longer function. Linda will keep the Paws telephone open (646 645 035). Apart from ordinary cars I have noticed vans and delivery lorries that do this. Surely if there is NOT a rule to allow this, an easy solution would be for the police to clamp them. If this were to happen and the word started spreading, unauthorised vehicles would not park in the bays. At the moment I have a fractured hip and it is so frustrating having to try to get parked near where I need with all the disabled spaces illegally taken. Mick Scarles, Javea (Alicante)
Better care WHEN I went to my doctor in England with a huge lump in my breast I was told to go away as there was ‘nothing wrong with me.. When I saw a doctor in Spain I was sent for a mammogram and then a scan and then for a biopsy. I had two tumours and a month later had an operation to remove them. For the past four-and-a-half years they have been taking care of me.
Without the Spanish health service I would have died. So thank you for giving me my life back. The health care here is so much better than in England. People are always ready to complain but forget how much the Spanish do for their guests. Elaine Wheeler, Torremolinos (Malaga)
Gasmen alert IT’S that time of year again, the bogus gasmen are about in Mijas. For those people who don’t know, these men look official and even have ‘ID’. But don’t be fooled. They knock on the door, say they need to check your gas system and then charge you hundreds of euros for €10 worth of work. I learned the lesson the hard way when I first moved to Spain and it cost me €300. Never let them in. If you need a check-up call your local gas company and make an appointment. Bring down the curtain on showbiz star witch-hunts LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT STAR STRUCK: Young girls were drawn to showbiz personalities. women in their 20s at the time of the alleged assault, he has had his home ransacked (very publicly) by an overly enthusiastic plod, been dropped from an appearance on TV show Big Brother and now finds his whole future on the line, and he hasn’t even been arrested. It is almost beyond belief that a mere accusation of wrongdoing can cost someone thousands in earnings
or to lose their livelihood whether guilty or not! Another much-loved, to date unnamed, performer is at this moment under observation in a clinic after almost suffering a nervous breakdown as a result of once again unsubstantiated accusations being levelled against him. Heaven help me, even I have been searching the deep reaches of my memory as to whether any
of the seemingly endless supply of young girls, eager to exchange sexual pleasures with me or my band members was underage or not. It’s ridiculous in the extreme. It is almost as though the authorities were getting their own back on the showbiz people who were offered these pleasures. Back in those days, many of the present older members of these various
departments did, I’m sure, seethe with jealousy as their peers were reported indulging in those ‘swinging’ activities while they were stuck in the not so privileged corners of their own careers. What better way to create a ‘he who laughs last’ situation by finally bringing down those who were the objects of their jealousy? Don’t dismiss this idea as typical Leapy ranting. Some people harbour this type of resentment for years; don’t be naïve enough to think there’s no chance of it lingering in a maggoty mind somewhere out there. Broken any New Year resolutions yet? T’S time these disgraceful McCarthystyle showbiz witchhunts were stopped in their tracks. The treatment by the authorities of artistes, whose careers are being wrecked by nothing more than hearsay and accusations by any female who decides to walk into a police station or talk to a newspaper, reeks of Big Brother. And it is being coupled with an irresponsible media frenzy we should all be ashamed of. Why is it that showbiz folk are considered fair game? Just because they are in the public eye doesn’t mean they don’t have loved ones at home, families whose lives are being traumatised by these often wild accusations, none of which have so far been substantiated. At the time of writing Jim Davidson is the latest to feel this unbelievable clodhopping weight of plod and publicity, an unacceptable situation which could ruin his career. Accused by two

It was another year, too, of political cock-ups, ‘lapses of judgement’ nowadays you ‘mis-say’ things, act ‘inappropriately’ or apologise not for the actions, but for ‘any distress caused’, nobody lies or cheats - and U-turns like the one forced over a pasty tax. In fact, wait long enough and two U-turns arrive at the same time. Nuff said. But, for me, the low point of the year was when Francis Maude advised drivers to store petrol: “Maybe a little bit in the garage as well in a jerrycan.” This triggered queues and panic-buying at petrol stations, an outcry by fire services and the AA and a woman ending up badly burned. All supposedly for a strike that hadn’t even been called at that point. It was then, however, that I found

myself caught up in the omnishambles hopelessly trying to get from one end of the country to the other. A review of 2012’s most-read Wikipedia articles threw up surprising differences, too, in what’s been popular across the various language versions of the online encyclopaedia. Facebook headed up the English edition as did ‘adult video actresses’ in Japan, the @ symbol making it into second place in Spain and The European Regional Development Fund third in Poland. Fun people, the Polish! The Russian
edition led with an article about the country, though entries for ‘porn site’ and ‘unemployment’ maybe shed greater light on ordinary Russian lives. Looking ahead to predictions, I won’t bore you with mine as the media have been plastered with them. Except to say I’m sure fad diets will still stick around despite a UK government minister’s warning to Brits of the dangers. After all, people have been following them for centuries. Diets like consuming tapeworms, arsenic pills, vinegar and wearing rubber undergarments by the Victorians. Ancient Greeks advocated even weirder weight-loss methods, including wrestling, walking around naked and avoiding sex. Modern Greeks appear to have given these up. Perhaps MPs should follow suit and stop publishing fad policies?

All or nothing in booze stakes

O here we are. Double digitdays, untold hours and minutes into the brave new year. How are your resolutions working out? Or did you wisely abstain from making any heartfelt pledges in the days following the Christmas excess? ‘Everything in moderation’, as one particularly insightful relative always points out, sipping on her one small sherry while I merrily tuck into my fifth glass of bubbly. The problem is that I am woefully bad at living life in moderation. Excess is simply so much more fun: ‘All or nothing’ would be a more appropriate motto for me, which is why I am now approaching halfway through a ‘dry’ January. The first few days were a breeze. There really is nothing like a good old New Year’s Eve knees-up followed by a stinking hangover to reinforce the vows of ‘never again’. Taking refuge in Northern Europe nicely circumnavigated the pitfalls of Kings Day festivities, which could otherwise have rocked my resolve. But as the days pass, it is

easy to lose sight of the original reasons for the detox. Back in Spain, friends blink bewilderedly at me when refusing a copa. It seems a foreign concept here, maybe it’s just further north we inflict these periods of abstinence on ourselves? By Day 10, I am pretty sure my liver is like a newborn baby’s and surely a breath test would confirm me a pseudo-saint, halo and all? To strengthen my resolve, I have canvassed advice on how to persevere, which I am of course delighted to share with you here. It might seem blindingly obvious, but you have to remove yourself from the haunts you usually frequent, especially if the

This is the time to seek out cafés, juice bars or anywhere without a drinks’ licence really. Diversion tactics are also important; you need to fill the time you have created with something else. the other resolutions, such as hiking or ballroom dancing? Both are infinitely easier with a clear head and clean blood. Or if physically challenged, why not start a blog for your friends and family in distant countries. Every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to write one these days and
with a bit of luck some talent scout might discover your literary skills and give you a whopping publishing contract. Trend-setters say that aliens are the new vampires as far as fiction is concerned, so start your masterpiece now. Move over, JK Rowling! Look in the mirror. Chances are your skin is more luminous, eyes clearer and, assuming you didn’t replace the pints with pies, you may well be a bit trimmer, too. Still missing the Merlot? Police in Spain are clamping down on drink drivers and even with the best intentions, it can be hard to judge the alcohol in your glass, so save yourself a bundle of cash and a stint in the penitentiary, not to mention any horrid accidents. In fact, the only legal way to ship you to and from the bar (except walking) is by horse, since they have a mind of their own, so maybe use your dry January to take some riding lessons, setting you up for a galloping return to the social fold come February.

HAT’S it then; adieu 2012 and bonjour 2013 (pardon my French but I have been reading about King Charles the First, his (alleged) lover the Duke of Buckingham and their disastrous attempts to invade France). Now I love a good reminisce as you all know (or maybe you don’t in which case, pay attention at the back) but sometimes looking back gives you nothing but a cricked neck and a deep sense of dissatisfaction. It’s gone, leave well alone I say. News presenters, celebrities and even the old lady who destroyed a masterpiece (don’t get me started) have all had their say. They have carped, crowed, hummed and hawed about the good/bad old times of the outgoing year. “What has 2012 ever done for me?” they call like dumped lovers desperately

trying to blacken the memory of an ex. “Out with the old and in with the new,” the saying goes, the cry of a child stomping on a much loved toy in anticipation of a nice new shiny one. The old year has slunk away shamefaced recalling, for the sake of its self-esteem, all the good things it gave us and bemoaning the ingrates that it leaves behind. Meanwhile, we kick at the dust, heads downcast, refusing to look it in the eye as we spill a plethora of tired
excuses at its feet: “It’s not you it’s me… I need space… you deserve someone better than me… I’ll always love you, I’m just not IN love with you.” So in the spirit of free and honest discourse and influenced by the aforementioned spiritual blindness of King Charles (who ordered beggars and workmen to remain in their houses as he travelled to one or other of his palaces so as not to sully his sight with the everyday) I say, well done, 2012, you were beautiful, while at the same time crossing my fingers behind my back. On the subject of looking back, quite out of the blue I was contacted by an old art school friend (not that she’s old, just a person from the time before reality set in). Michele was the first person who really listened to me.
THE PAST: Don’t look back, but instead look forward to the year ahead. She was slightly older than me and had a tranquillity about her that drew people to her. Her honesty, sensitivity and ability to get right to the heart of a problem always astounded me and had more to do with her character than her age. So I hope that 2013 sees us re-establish our friendship (sorry, 2012, I know it was you who brought us together) as I for one will relish flights of nostalgia and journeys of remembrance in our tentative first steps towards a renewal of friendship. Now back to Chaz the First, is it any wonder there was a civil war? He ruled a country whose
wealth and place in the world had been established by Elizabeth the First, weakened by James the First and then left flapping around the ineffectual (bejewelled) feet of one of the worst monarchs in British history. True his father laid the foundation for the dissolute state of the realm but Chaz certainly relished his own part in its near destruction. In fact, he would have done well to look back and learn. I wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year (sorry, 2012). Cava, anyone?

Billie Piper rules out ‘Doctor Who’ 50th anniversary return BILLIE PIPER has ruled out a return to Doctor Who for the 50th anniversary, claiming that she hasn’t even been contacted to take part. The actress, who played Rose Tyler on the sci-fi show, was previously linked to a return following comments from Matt Smith about how he would like to work with Piper. Speaking last summer, Smith said: “If I wanted a companion from the past I would say Rose because I am good friends with Billie.” However, Piper has quashed talk of a return during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show. When asked if she was returning to the BBC series, Piper said: “No. I’ve not been asked. I think Matt Smith said something in passing or in jest like, ‘That would be nice,’ and it became something, but no.” Piper starred alongside Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor when the sci-fi series was rebooted by the BBC in 2005. She also worked with 10th Doctor David Tennant and last appeared on the show in the 2010 episode ‘The End of Time’. Fawlty Towers has topped a survey of past shows Britons would love to see return to TV in 2013. John Cleese’s classic BBC sitcom, which aired for only two series in 1975 and 1979, led the poll commissioned by Freeview, scoring 29 per cent of the votes. The survey of 2,000 TV viewers was launched after the successful 2012 return of US soap Dallas on Channel 5 and a comeback for Surprise, Surprise

The Doctor Who Christmas Day special attracted almost 1.5 million programme requests on BBC iPlayer last month, helping the catch-up TV platform enjoy another recordbreaking festive period. BBC iPlayer launched on Christmas Day in 2007 on the PC, but celebrated its fifth birthday as the number one video on-demand brand that is available on more than 650 devices, including TV, mobile, tabets and games consoles. In October, iPlayer attracted 200 million requests for TV and radio for the first time in a single month, including a spike in demand on mobile devices.
Christmas is typically a hugely popular time for iPlayer, as people use the platform to catch up on the glut of television content from the BBC. In total, there were 77 million requests for TV and radio programmes throughout the festive period (December 22-January 1), and that does not even include Virgin Media’s cable TV data, which is not yet available. BBC iPlayer requests on Christmas Day were up 40 per cent on tablets and 60 per cent on mobiles compared with Christmas Eve. The notion that eating just the whites is healthier than the whole egg is false. Egg whites contain little nutrition, mostly just a little protein and sodium. Three tips for a happy New Year IT is true many people end up putting the same resolutions on their list year after year and not making it much past the end of January before they are broken. If this resonates with you, how great would it be to achieve your resolutions during 2013 and not experience that Groundhog Day moment when you’re writing your list next year? Here are three tips that might help. 1. Be specific and realistic about your goal. Your unconscious mind likes specifics and to achieve your goal it must be realistically achievable too. If you are intending to lose weight, write down exactly how much weight you would like to lose and then break it down into manageable chunks. If fitness is one of your resolutions, what exactly does that mean to you? For some, a fitness goal might be walking up stairs on the way to work and for others, taking part in a charity run.. 2. Record the positives If you slip up once in a while, it’s okay - everyone’s human. However, often where people go wrong is to focus on the slip-up instead of all the good things they have achieved along the way.
Keep a success diary and, in the evening, write down three positive things you have experienced during the day. 3. Reward yourself We are naturally motivated towards pleasure and reward and away from pain, so build in targets you can reward yourself for. It can be anything that makes you happy. Why not make a list of ways to pamper yourself? This also means in order to make a goal achievable we need to frame with the language of reward. Not ‘I must go to the gym more’, but perhaps ‘I want to feel healthy and fit and full of energy.’ I wish you success in creating the life you want for yourself in 2013. Just remember to note and praise yourself for each step forward, to try to learn from any slip-ups and have fun. You never know, it might be as enjoyable as reaching the destination!

Time for a major winter cutback AS explained in Chapter 6.9 of ‘Your Garden in Spain – Planning, planting and maintenance,’ gardens of all sizes and complexities benefit tremendously from a major winter cut back and clean-up which in most gardens is best done during January. The reasons for this are tenfold. • You will have had a colourful Christmas garden with luck but the frequency of flowerings will have now slowed down or stopped, except for winter flowering perennials such as euryops which will have been trimmed in the autumn to stimulate winter flowerings. • To prepare the
size and shape to match the size of the garden and stop them growing straggly. • Most plants are dormant or at their lowest level of growth. • To stimulate new flower buds in the spring or early summer. • The soil is cleared of rubbish and weeds and where appropriate hoed or loosened with a hand fork while one can get at the soil most easily with no leaves and less branching growth. • Bulbs are showing so one can see where not to hoe or fork the soil. • Unplanted areas of vegetable plots can be cleaned up, turned and covered with

compost and well rotted manures which any frosts can break down. • The sap is down in deciduous flowering and fruiting trees. • It is a good time to cut back/remove the yellow flowered oxalis before it seeds. • The weather in January is often sunny and dry which makes it pleasant to work outdoors before the colder weather of February. We know that with the recent hot weather some autumn flowering plants continue to flower well and it is tempting to leave them until they are hit by

retain moisture and shade roots from the hot summer sun. • Shred as much pruned material as possible to add to the compost heap. • Make it possible to walk down paths. The growth after last autumn’s rain was phenomenal. Next week we will comment on the cut back needs of a range of plants and trees.

Fines vary from €2,400 to €15,025. Dogs are banned from areas where children play. A lost dog must be reported to the police immediately.
Dangerous dogs must be muzzled in public and on a short (one metre) lead. All dogs that have any record of aggression or any dog that shows aggressive behaviour or any dog considered by the authorities to be dangerous, must now be registered and in possession of a special ‘Licencia Municipal.’ Spain is a federal country and has 17 different Comunidades or regions with their own parliament, government and laws. A law in one Comunidad could be different from a similar law in another, therefore I strongly urge you to check with your local municipality. In Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona and other large cities a list has been made of dogs which could potentially be dangerous, and the Rottie, Doberman, Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Akita Dogo de Burdeos, Staffordshire,
Presa Canaria, Fila Brasilero, are on the list, and also their crossbreeds. Even if your dog is not one of those listed breeds, but has bitten a person in the past, it will be classified as if it was on the list. If you want to own a dog which is on the dangerous list, you have to go and see a psychologist and do a test on a computer (not difficult) just the same as for driving a car. It costs between €60 and €72. If you are a Spanish resident you will have to apply for a document from the Ministry for the Interior, confirming you do not have a criminal record. If you are not a resident in Spain, you have to apply for such a document in your country of origin and have it translated into Spanish. Take the originals with you to your local town hall. I hadn’t even heard of the Mayans and their end of the world scenario, but one fact I quickly discovered was that when you sold someone a house and they moved in, they wanted the world to quit spinning and time to stop forever. Nothing else was ever to be built around them or even dreamt of. The world was to stay just the way it was forever. That surprised me. But, the more I thought about it, it had a ring of truth to it. Besides, the way our construction business was proceeding we would have to quit building as we couldn’t complete a decent finished product in less than three years per house. Over drinks and dinner and lots of profuse apologies in an expensive restaurant I could ill afford I was subject to a three-hour harangue full of curses, innuendos and the nastiest hand gestures that I had ever witnessed in my life. I was speechless and motionless. Finally both my clients fell silent from exhaustion and I escaped with my life for the evening. It would get worse in
the morning, so I thought I’d let my brother handle it. I phoned him to say that Mrs Bianchi would be in the office early ‘to pay him’. At lunch that day in La Gaviota restaurant they were all outside on the terrace laughing and the best of friends. Paul had not only gotten the money but had also sold the brother a house. My single mission that day was to get an advance on my salary so I could pay for the previous night’s meal. I did. Then went home and sulked. I had more to learn. I didn’t want to remain an ‘onion’ forever.
