Desalination plants to rescue of tourist areas MANY tourist areas would have been without water this summer without the much-criticised desalinisation plants in Alicante and Murcia. Drought plus a structural failure in the Tajo-Segura pipeline prevented water transfers and threatened the domestic supply in Torrevieja and La Manga, as well as to Alicante and Murcia cities. Desalinisation plants in Murcia’s San Pedro del Pinatar and in Alicante City have instead worked at capacity this summer, processing 6.5 cubic hectometres of water in July compared with 0.3 hectometres during the same month in 2011. Thirty per cent of the area’s water already comes from the desalinisation plants including the city of Murcia, 40 kilometres from the coast. The remainder usually comes from the Taibilla river and the Segura-Tajo pipeline “There would probably have been supply problems without the plants.

Couple in €12m expat swindle jailed A COUPLE is now behind bars having swindled 120 Spanish expatriates out of £10million (€12.6m). The fraud has left some of the expatriates penniless and without homes. John Hirst, aged 61, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court in the UK to nine years after admitting conspiring to defraud and money laundering relating to a ‘Ponzi’ scheme targeting expatriates in
Mallorca. His wife Linda was sentenced to two-and-a-half-years for money laundering. The couple used the cash to fund a lavish lifestyle including expensive houses and luxury holidays plus wedding celebrations in Las Vegas and Mallorca, the court heard during the six-week trial. A third person, financial advisor Richard Pollett, aged 70, was found guilty of
conspiracy to defraud and was jailed for six-and-a-half-years. Judge Durham-Hall said that those targeted were mainly ordinary, hardworking expatriates who put their pensions and savings into the scheme after being promised huge returns and a risk-free guarantee. Of the £10million invested, only around £4million has been repaid.

Brother and sister held for gems raid on parents A BROTHER and sister have been arrested for stealing €8,000 worth of jewellery and €3,000 cash from their parents in Padules. Guardia Civil officers called in to investigate the thefts are said to have discovered no forced entry to the premises, nor of the safe. It was later found that almost all the jewels had been sold in an establishment in Almeria, allegedly by the victim’s daughter. Mixed summer sales as traders fight VAT rise ON THE DECLINE: Cannabis use.
Drug-taking decreasing DRUG consumption is dropping in Almeria, but alcohol intake is increasing. This is revealed in the latest study on drugs by Andalucian residents carried out by the Junta de Andalucia. Residents have been found to use fewer substances of almost all types, with the exception of alcohol. Cannabis, hallucinogenic products, tranquillizers and other products have also slightly decreased. Daily consumption of tobacco has dropped from 45.7 per cent to 31.5 per cent, but alcohol consumption increased from 4.8 per cent to 5.5 per cent. The main purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of psychoactive substances, as well as the most common socio-demographic profiles of drug-users.

We don’t know, but we have noticed that we have more clients ordering A la Carte rather than Menu del Día and there has also been an increase in Spanish customers who appear to be coming out of their shells with respect to other types of cuisine.” Meanwhile, a Vera trader, who asked not to be named, said that he would not increase prices in his general store. “I cannot afford to lose local customers for the sake of a few cents in
every euro. I need to absorb the increases in VAT, otherwise some of my loyal customers of many years might move elsewhere to shop in establishments that decide to keep to the old price rates.” This view was shared by a normally well informed business source in Mojacar. “Competition has been so intense in the last two years that just slight price increases can put people off, and see them take their business elsewhere,” she said. “So I expect many traders to keep things as they are. I certainly do not plan to rise prices.” Meanwhile, nationally supermarket giants Lidl and Mercadona have both announced that they will not charge customers the VAT increase. Lidl said that thanks to their ‘business policies based on constant production improvements and cost reductions’ the company will not have to pass on the VAT increases to consumers. Both companies said the added VAT costs would be taken from their margins to avoid affecting sales. Carrefour also plans to give VAT discounts to shoppers over 65. While garages cannot hope to absorb the increased VAT on vehicle sales, clearly recent times have been good for Stuart Campbell of Kia Motors in Mojacar Playa. “We have been lucky enough to have sold out our entire stock of vehicles both here and in Almeria. “When some British banks had problems some clients decided to transfer money to Spain and to buy a vehicle before the rise of IVA. “We sold six cars recently and are now waiting for new stock and also brochures as we are still getting enquiries.
“It could be just the reputation of our product but we have so far done better than last year.” But the summer sales which ended before the VAT rises were introduced from September 1 turned out to be very disappointing in many places, with the president of the Association Corazón de Alicante reporting ‘between 30 and 35 per cent fewer sales’ compared to last summer. “It has been the worst summer since the economic crisis,” he remarked. Pedro Reig, President of Covaco, a regional trade employers group, agreed that this year’s sales seemed to go largely unnoticed. “Sales are not what they were, and never will be the same again,” he said, referring to recent news that the government passed a law that allows retailers to offer discounts throughout the year, rather than just during the traditional winter and summer sales periods. But Covaco positively noticed in odd tourist areas, due in part to foreign visitors and to a lesser extent, the Spanish,the sale of appliances increased. Meanwhile, Enrique Gil, head of the Malaga Retail Federation (Fecoma), Enrique Gil, reported that the summer sales turnover was approximately €42 million; down €3 million on last year. Fecoma statistics also showed that the average amount spent by people in Malaga Province during the sales was €50; a drop of €11 on the 2011 averages. Gil pointed out that not even 70 per cent price reductions or the planned VAT rise saved the sales, leaving many shop owners wondering what the future will bring.

Check prices call after rises in VAT A CALL has been made for random checks to be carried out on prices being charged following the VAT which came into effect on September 1. The consumers association FACUA has asked the government and autonomous communities to look into certain distribution companies who have claimed they will maintain prices following the VAT increases. Ruben Sanchez, the spokesman of FACUA, said that the National Commission for Competition (CNC), the National Institute of Consumption (INC) and the corresponding community authorities should be performing checks of price variations in August in comparison to July. “Many consumers are expressing their concern to us, as well as on social networks, that some important companies have raised prices of numerous products�, Sanchez said. However, in cases where power or water bills are to be paid in September, he clarified it was not fraud to include the new VAT rate.

Normality being restored to Mojacar in wake of floods

Beaches, albeit devoid of sand bearing in mind the beaches here are man-made - but now cleared and green flags flying for those visitors who have
been plunged into a situation of “what do we do if there is no beach to sit on”. Storms of this nature are expected now and again, but it is clear that most residents of Mojacar are of the opinion that a lot of the damage could possibly be avoided with careful planning by the local authorities, and they feel that once the situation is controlled it seems to be immediately swept under the carpet.

IN the aftermath of the torrential rainstorm that battered Mojacar, a massive effort has been made to reinstate some semblance of normality to the promenade of Mojacar Playa. Thursday’s storms caused flooding and electricity in the area was severely affected with Mojacar Pueblo and The Parque Comercial intermittently cutting out until 9am. The destruction of general water pipes on Mojacar Playa and surrounding areas left a large number of residents without mains water for almost two days. Many houses suffered considerable damage with outside walls collapsing and serious flooding. Residents had to resort to using water from private swimming pools in order to be able to start the clear-up. Areas like La Parata were very badly affected in so much as the problems of the past were still very much in evidence. For example, the overflow each year of the riverbed which, despite efforts to divert the water, is a major thorn in the side of the community, walls which

Litter fight begins By Tony Matthews RUBBISH dumped in and around Turre and Mojacar is considered a fire risk by many residents and traders. The recent fire near Bedar and the smaller ones at Vera and Antas have clearly shown the fire hazard created by bottles, loads of paper, cardboard and other trash. Direct sunlight on a plastic/glass container, can easily trigger off a spark that can lead to a blaze. Turre opposition councillor, Martin Morales and his Mojacar counterpart, Jessica Simpson are heading a campaign to bring the litter louts to book. Gata-Nijar. Since last summer, 273 turtles were also released in the area by the Regional Council for Agriculture, Fishing and the Environment. The turtles came from the Centre of Sea Management of Algeciras (Cegma) in Cadiz, which had been their home since being born on the beaches of Almeria about two years ago. The aim is that the turtles return to this area for egg-laying once they are fully grown, which will be in 15 to 20 years. This will help create a stable population of this endangered species in the motorbikes, bicycles and quads. Three more people have been charged area. Counting the deadly cost: raging fire means multimillion clean-up operation By Nicole Hallett VICTIMS of the biggest fire in Malaga Province for 20 years continue to count the cost. Insurance officials are also looking at figures after the killer blaze which started last Thursday evening destroyed 200 homes and engulfed 8,225 hectares of land (the equivalent of 13,000 football pitches), almost 85 per cent of it forest, and the remainder agricultural and urban land. As the fire spread throughout the night it raged in half a dozen municipalities, including Coin, Alhaurin, Mijas, Marbella, Ojen and Monda. Helicopters and planes continued to damp down 48 hours later, by which time residents from outlying districts were using the weekend to take a closer look at affected areas. The blaze started in Barranco Blanco in Coin municipality and Guardia Civil officers are continuing to question people in the area in a bid to reveal the source of the blaze. The leading theory is that it was started intentionally. With temperatures well above 30ºC when the fire started, dried scrubland and vegetation following the hot summer, combined with gusting winds of more than 30 kilometres an hour at times, saw the flames quickly
spread over 12 kilometres, forcing around 5,000 people to be evacuated, including from La Cala Golf Resort Hotel. Police went door-to-door ordering families out of their homes as the flames approached. Killed in the blaze was a 54year-old German who returned with his wife to their home in La Mairena after being evacuated. His charred body was later discovered, but not that of his wife. Five people were also injured including a German couple aged 59 and 60 who remain in a critical condition in hospital. They suffered more than 50 per cent burns. The devastation left in the wake of the fire will mean a multimillion-euro clean-up operation, including reforestation projects and recon-struction of housing and infrastructure. Many of those who have returned home from the emergency centres that were set up have been left without power. The social network Facebook (FB) played an integral role during this disaster in which some householders lost every-thing. While the fire raged, FB members updated others on how it was spreading. A FB group called SOS Volunteers Andalucia was also
created to provide a social communication and information exchange platform. It now has thousands of members. Early on during the emergency, various points were organised, including the Iceland stores in Fuengirola and Puerto Banus, for people to drop off donations, including clothes and food. “The response was overwhelming,” said an official. “People have come from all along the coast with items to donate, filling hundreds of trolleys.” A horse box arrived from Axarquia filled with items donated by people in Herradura and the Nerja Donkey Sanctuary, among others. Many donated items have been taken to a central government drop-off point and to the Red Cross for distribution. Anything left has been stored and is being sorted. Meanwhile, the group has since set up an interactive website – www.sosandalucia.com – which provides updated information. The international community is also collaborating with various organisations, including local charities, media and town halls. The group’s plan is to continue to serve as a centralised platform for any other potential future emergency situations.

1,014 in surplus, the PPF said. The finances of many schemes have deteriorated sharply because of the rising estimated cost of paying for pensions. This was partly the result of a deterioration in the yield, or return, on government bonds. Broadcast claims that the rebrand of ITV1 is among a number of changes being made to the commercial broadcaster’s network of channels. This includes the trademark yellow colour on the flagship ITV1 being phased out and a new set of idents - short video clips that accompany the start of programmes being introduced. The report also claims that ITV’s digital channels - ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and CITV - will be given a ‘substantially different’ on-screen presence, although they will keep their existing names. An ITV insider told Broadcast that the rebrand is “not just a paint job”, but is about boosting the overall ITV brand. “This is a big undertaking and will have a sense of scale,” said the source. “It is aimed at ensuring viewers attribute our content to the ITV brand.” Rufus Radcliffe, the group marketing and research director at ITV, is said to be leading the rebrand, which is ITV’s first such exercise in the

ITV has not changed its brand in the past six years, so it is a big undertaking. last six years. Sky1 has confirmed that the fourth season of Glee will not air in the UK until January. The musical drama returns to Fox in the US next month, but Sky1
has decided to hold back the UK premiere in order to “play out... an unbroken run”. In a statement, the broadcaster said: “We originally thought the majority of our customers would want to see Glee as soon as possible, but last year you gave us feedback about the constant breaks in scheduling (owing to one-off broadcasts of live sport and other events in the US) and told us you wanted a more consistent scheduling pattern. “We listened to the feedback and have decided to begin
showing season 4 in January 2013, so we can play out in an unbroken run.” Spin-off series ‘The Glee Project’ has also been confirmed to return to Sky1, with an autumn air date being eyed for the reality show’s return. The new season of Glee will feature guest spots from Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) and Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) and will also introduce four new regular cast members. The X Factor and Doctor Who will clash in the Saturday night schedules on Saturday, September 8, it has been
revealed. Doctor Who’s second episode ‘Dinosaurs on a Spaceship’ runs until 9.20pm (CET) on BBC One and The X Factor will start on ITV1 at 9.10pm. Early schedules featured the two programmes overlapping for 20 minutes, but ITV pushed the reality show later into the evening at the last minute. This weekend’s Doctor Who premiere will not clash with Simon Cowell’s entertainment series. ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ ends at 9.10pm, just before The X Factor airs. X Factor’s ratings have dropped considerably so far this series, failing to reach the 10 million plus viewing figures and 40 per cent plus audience shares that it reached during the opening audition rounds last year. However, ITV controller Peter Fincham has denied there are any concerns about flagging ratings on the show, insisting the vehicle has still "got years" to run.

One event that combines all the qualities listed in the Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger) is the decathlon. Decathletes have to train for and be skilled at 10 different disciplines, quite a Herculean task. To win a gold medal they need to have speed for the sprinting events, stamina for the distance events, strength for the field events like shot put and technique for events like the pole vault. This is very impressive, but there is a group of athletes who consistently outperform even the best decathletes. The individual event champions deliver far better performances in their area of expertise. At these London 2012 Olympics, decathlon gold medallist Ashton Eaton ran the 100m in 10.35 seconds. Usain Bolt took just 9.63 seconds in the individual event. It’s probably unfair to compare anyone to Usain Bolt, but the results of the other nine disciplines tell the same story. For example, Eaton threw the javelin 61.96m, while the individual event gold medallist achieved 84.58m. Eaton reached a height of 5.2m in the pole vault compared to the individual champion’s 5.97m. You would not expect Usain Bolt to also specialise in the pole vault or javelin, specialists tend to be just that - specialists. There are many situations in life where a specialist performs more efficiently and delivers better result than a generalist, and this is particularly true in investments. Just because an investment manager is skilled at managing UK equities, for example, does not mean he will be as successful at managing US or Japanese equities. Time is not money, say the Greeks GREECE is back in the spotlight after asking for more time to achieve its deficit reduction target. Indeed Prime Minister Antonis Samaras met with Angela Merkel in Berlin and Francois Hollande in Paris to present new proposals which would involve delaying the timeframe originally agreed by two years to reduce Greece’s deficit to less than 3 per cent of GDP, whilst arguing that such delay would not result in extra costs for other EU countries. This would take the end of the Greek budgetary adjustments’ programme from 2014 to 2016, a necessary measure according to Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras to avoid further drastic austerity measures which would feed the recession’s vicious circle and dampen down any recovery hopes. However, German Finance Minister Wolfang Schäuble replied immediately that more time usually means more money, adding that such a request points towards new demands from Greece which is under the scrutiny of auditors from the IMF, ECB and European Commission. The verdict is expected early October. Meanwhile Spain is falling a little bit further into recession, recording a 0.4 per cent drop of its GDP in the second quarter

EWN COMMENT The luxury of regional pride ON top of Spain’s EU bank bailout and the spectre of sovereign rescue, Cataluña, Valencia and Murcia have sent out their own mayday calls. They owe €145 billion, of which €36 billion must be refinanced this year. Aided by lottery loot the government set up an €18 billion rescue fund in July but the arithmetic is not promising. Autonomies and nationalist pride come at an exorbitant price these days.
The vicious circle RECEIVING the €400odd allowance available after unemployment benefit is exhausted will depend on looking for work for the previous 30 days. As though it were that easy! After a month, the
majority will not find a job because there are none around and there are no jobs because there is no money around. And there is no money because there are no jobs. And so on to miserable infinity.

FOLLOWING the front page story (Costa del Sol, Issue 1413) about the opening of the new runway and complaints about noise levels; we have a huge problem now. We live between the villages of Valle de Abdalajis, Alora and Pastalero; inland from Malaga. Both day and night low-flying planes come directly over the top of our valley and house. It is so loud that it starts many of the neighbourhood dogs barking. It is absolutely intolerable. We have about 20 houses in our little valley and it is very remote and is why we love it here. Due to the heat we leave our windows open, but the noise is intolerable and we can no longer sit outside enjoying our previously peaceful garden. Sleeping on job I BELIEVE I know one of the reasons many people choose to go to supermarkets rather than the smaller shops (Issue 1416). Supermarkets are open from morning until evening without closing in the middle of the day for a few hours. This is true for all shops. In the centre of Fuengirola I can see that many of the shops are suffering. These are the ones that close for siesta. Yet just a bit further up in the large Miramar Shopping Centre where the shops stay open all day, they seem to be enjoying a far better trade. Equally so, most of the cheap Chinese stores seem to do well, however the only one I know of that closes in the middle of the day – which was located on Carretera de Mijas – has closed. Born to sniff IN regards to the article on dogs sniffing out the red palm weevil in trees (Issue 1417). This makes one wonder why it was not thought of before. Dogs rely on their sense of smell to interpret the world much in the same way people depend on their sight. The area of a dog’s brain that is devoted to analysing smells is

Taxing thought I READ that Mayor Chalvi is delighted to be able to spend €1.5 million on the refurbishment of the Arenal area. His taxpayers wish he would show equal enthusiasm about repaying the excessive IBI extracted from them over the past seven years. I think that he talks the talk of good government, but like most politicians, when it comes to walking the walk, he becomes somewhat lame. Driving tonic THIS should interest those who need to take a medical for their driver’s licence. Catral now has its own ‘psicotecnico’ centre where my wife recently obtained hers for €20, instead of the often quoted €30-€50. It is carried out in a matter of 20 minutes or so. For those that do not speak Spanish the receptionist can help them with a reasonable understanding of English. We just turned up for our test with no problem. The centre is more or less opposite the small Consum supermarket, open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6pm-9pm. You should take your original residence

Proud legacy I WAS annoyed by the insinuation in ‘EWN Comment’ (Issue 1416) that London should somehow be ashamed of its connection with Oliver Cromwell. As a Londoner I am proud of our association and the legacy he has left us. He rid us, both of a treacherous king and the concept of a divine right to rule. He gave us a strong parliament, a professional army and made us respected throughout Europe. Granted he didn’t do much for theatres, church music or Christmas but you can’t have everything. Public outrage I AGREE with Mike Walsh (Issue 1417) in regards to the fury towards a two-year sentence on three women who cavorted on the altar of one of Moscow’s most revered places of worship, screaming blasphemies and obscenities. If this had happened in a Muslim place of worship the penalty would have been far more severe than a two-year sentence. Just look at the recent beheading of 15 men and two women in Afghanistan by Taliban. Their crime? Being at a late night party with music and dancing where there were men and women. Apparently this is immoral. In my mind, this should provoke far more public outrage. Also, what about the women who are raped and then stoned to death for their ‘crime’ according to Sharia law; the same law that Muslim Extremists seek in the UK. Power bill shock WE were already bracing ourselves for the VAT tax increases on September 1, but I see we are going to be done again by backdating the bills like electricity. I hasten to add I have no problem with the disabled. Over the years I have
been in touch with the infirm probably more than most through various charity organisations; it’s just the sheer volume of
individual tragedies that has suddenly confronted us that I find disquieting. Anyway, congratulations to all the participants.
Before I do leave the subject however, I didn’t think the antics of Barbara Windsor and Boris Johnson were particularly clever. I actually found their emulating people who have lost their legs, bordering on the downright offensive. Nothing constructive was achieved by the actions of this patronising pair of Wally’s, except get them in the newspapers. Wasn’t it great to see the ignoble art of squatting (no pun intended) made a criminal offence this week? With total predictability, there they all were. Grubby looking left wingers and do gooders, all whinging about the fact these parasites would now have nowhere to live. My God, just think. Some of them will probably have to get a job! Nothing gives them the right to take over and reside in other people’s property without permission. Nothing allows them to trash another person’s place of abode. I THOUGHT very carefully about my subject matter this week. I don’t care what anyone says, as far as I’m concerned, no one could have been quite prepared for such an onslaught of missing limbs and

Self-luminous electronic displays can affect sleep.
Mobile phones can affect sleep SLEEP problems can be caused by using an electronic gadget for just two hours before bed. Teens are particularily susceptible to the problem, researchers from the Lighting Research Centre at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York (USA) found. They believe the displays cause melatonin suppression. Melatonin is the chemical that controls the body clock. “Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22 per cent,” said Mariana Figueiro, associate professor at Rensselaer and director of the LRC’s Light and Health Programme. “Stimulating the human circadian system to this level may affect sleep in those using the devices prior to bedtime.”

If you listen very carefully, you can hear the collective sigh of relief of mothers across Spain; across most of the Western world, in fact. This week and next herald the start of the new school term and after some 11 weeks, not a moment too soon, may I add. There is nothing better than the company of my little ninja niñas, but two solid months is just de trop, demasiado, and zu viehl. One more bickering session over who gets the first pancake, the purple rather than pink cup or the really pretty Barbie and I will happily walk the plank of the nearest pirate vessel. This being our first year in Spain and the fact that our beloved, yet crazy dog now has separation anxiety, we decided to spend the summer here: The summer, the whole summer and nothing but the summer, your honour. If there has been an upturn in the local economy, surely we must have done our part as the staunchest supporters of all things Spanish. A thank you letter from Mariano Rajoy would not be inappropriate. Not to mention all the foreign guests we have dragged half-way across the globe to do the same - but then I think I already did (Holiday

Hotel, EWN July 26 - August 1). We actually only made it as far as Sóller, which in itself was no mean feat with a no air-con sauna of a car, but then I was most curious about the brand spanking new Jumeirah Beach Hotel. How would such a legend of a hotel fare in the land not typically known for its superior and attentive service? Pretty well, is the answer, though they still need to decide if they love or loathe children, with family facilities a bit patchy. There has certainly been enough to do here in Mallorca to keep us occupied and entertained; horse riding, boating, water parks and the beach during the day; spectacular shows such as Son Amar’s Pasíon and Pirates at night.
ME TIME: After two months of holidays we can be close to breaking point. It’s just that I can’t wait to get back to routine; humans are, after all, creatures of habit and a mélange of sloth,
servitude (donning more ‘hats’ than a milliner as chef, entertainer, cleaner and chauffeur) and sun alone is not
enough and too much at the same time. So bring on the early starts, healthy salads rather than charred barbecues; time to blitz the now tractor-sized spare tyre in the gym, where they probably believe I have been abducted by aliens or emigrated (again) after such a long absence. Hallelujah to coffee mornings with the mummies before ticking off a few things on my to-do list, which now rivals the telephone directory in size and scope. Back to normality. Back to cooler days after such oppressive heat and back to burgundy, brown and black hues after months of pastels. More than January, I find the school start the most exciting time of the year; new projects and ideas abound; resolutions that you are more likely to stick with than in the bleak January lull. Heck, I may even go back to school myself after a summer sabbatical from my Spanish lessons - and enroll in another class: Maybe now is the time to take up BASE jumping or knitting? So, if you see me dropping off my little angels at the school gates this week, do excuse me if I don’t shed tears of sadness, and please overlook the odd impromptu cartwheel as I head off to an autumn of me, myself and I.

Ecco Homigod! THE poet Rabindranath Tagore once wrote that, “Age considers; youth ventures.” Except, it seems, in the case of the 80 year old churchgoer from Zaragoza who decided to restore a 100 year old painting of Christ using a painting by numbers set and an old dish mop. Apparently she leapt with glee upon the beautiful fresco by Elias Garcia Martinez and duly proceeded to totally obliterate the pained features and delicate brushwork of the original. This story gave me the biggest laugh of the year, especially the protestations of the perpetrator who insisted (as a child would) that everyone knew what she was doing and she therefore had done nothing wrong. Personally if I were her I would have plead insanity or told everyone that Christ told her to do it then ran away and hid. What is telling is the vehemence with which she attacked the fresco. Not only did she endeavour to paint the missing sections ruined by damp and age, but she continued by covering the whole image with her own particular style of brushwork which was amateur, to say the least.
Suzanne Manners Suzanne has a degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths and an MA in Writing from Lancaster University. She is currently teaching in Alicante and writing a book for teenagers (which doesn’t have a vampire as its central character).
Her ‘restoration’ to me smacks of something more sinister, artistic envy perhaps, a desire to destroy beauty or maybe she just hated the artist’s work. Whatever, the fact remains that she has deliberately ruined an accomplished work of art and you may feel I am being cruel but the woman is not stupid or mentally impaired, she seems quite bright to me and must have realised that one does not just paint over a century old fresco in order to save the church a penny or two. Perhaps it should be treated as a deliberate act of vandalism. Would a 16 year old graffiti artist be treated with the same benign amusement? How many of us who at least profess to a smidgen of artistic talent have thought “Ooh that Michelangelo could do with a spot of paint, let me just slap a bit of Titanium White over
the third Cherub from the left and see what happens?” I think not. Absurdly, given the wanton destruction the old lady caused, her act has created something of a tourist boom for the church and ‘Ecco Mono’, as the restoration has been called, has become a ‘must see’ attraction. The second laugh from this whole ‘fiasco’ surely has to be the sanguine attitude of the Councillor of Culture whose solution to the likely irreparable damage to the work was to comment that perhaps they could replace it with a photograph of the original. Why stop there, why not replace ‘Ecco Homo’ with a photograph of Bart Simpson? Anyway I’m off to The National Gallery, thought I might restore a few old masters, maybe brighten up a Caravaggio or two, add a few flowers and put a smile on the lips of St Sebastian. Then who knows, maybe I’ll straighten up the nudes in Picasso’s ‘Demoiselles D’avignon’ and finish up by cleaning Duchamp’s urinal. I may even rewrite the ending of Macbeth. The world is my lobster as Salvador Dali may have said. Anyone got a dish mop I can borrow?

They have been together 20 years and worked in bars and restaurants in England and Spain for most of their adult lives. They have now taken over the management of El Pinar Bar and Restaurant and hope to give it a ‘breath of fresh life’. The bar, set in the foothills of the Fillibres Mountains, with stunning views of the sea and mountains, is a peaceful and tranquil venue for all the family. Open every day from 10am until late, they offer breakfast, lunch and dinner service as well as a well-stocked bar. Breakfast is generally

Organic foods not necessarily better WHILE organic food contains fewer contaminants, there is little evidence that organic foods are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods. Eating organic foods can reduce the likelihood of consuming pesticides and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, one of the most comprehensive studies to address the questions to date shows. Two-hundred-and-forty published studies of the nutrient and contaminant levels in organic and conventionally grown foods and studies of humans eating them were looked at by a team of researchers from Stanford University in California. Both the nutrient levels and the bacterial fungal or

Romeria in Albox THIS Saturday is Albox’s ‘Romeria de la Virgen del Salient’.
It is a religious procession that travels the 18km from Albox village to the Monasterio de El Saliente where the virgin is kept. Hundreds of people from around Spain come to attend this event. This romeria has been declared of cultural interest. For those who fancy going to Albox there are a number of monuments one can visit in between partaking of the various bars and restaurants and wandering around the shops. Most of the monuments are churches of which there are at least five and hermitages - religious retreats – of which there are two. There is also the Marcelinos stone wall. For those who enjoy motorcross there is the La Mina circuit with many of the ups and downs laid out over natural terraine. At the beginning of November Albox will hold their All Saints Feria, where it is traditional to go out and eat tapas at midday in a festive atmosphere which often continues until midnight.

Teaching new pets to meet resident pets BEFORE bringing home your new dog, introduce your new pet to your resident pet in a neutral area. Keep both dogs on leashes for a short time. Be matter-of-fact about the situation but stay alert. If either dog reacts aggressively, consider getting a different dog or none at all. Keeping two dogs that do not like each other under control is a huge and dangerous task. After a few minutes take the leads off and let the dogs explore each other, best at this point you walk away and keep quiet.

Inner warmth thanks to a Buddhist lama MIRACLES do happen. Four years ago I went to the bullring in Lorca, sat in my usual seat and heard world-famous minstrelpoet Bob Dylan warble his songs. One week ago I drove high into the bleak brown barren hills above Serena and Los Pinos to a Buddhist retreat and met a famed Tibetan Lama, Namkha Dzong, and experienced mind altering inner warmth and purring serenity among families of other Buddhists who had made the early morning trek to greet the master. Will wonders ever stop? There is a Buddhist centre near most people and plenty of nice folk to show the path to inner enlightenment. Two of the main participants at the retreat were Tesni, charming daughter of Tito’s and her mate Pablo, who were very helpful in getting me there. In these turbulent times, finding a few moments of inner peace is as valuable as two good bottles of wine, and less costly. There is quite a large established community already around my vicinity, including a monk living in nearby Sopalmo and plenty more scattered about through Mojacar, Vera and Bedar (Almeria province). The lecture when I attended concerned the younger generation and how much time is wasted with gimmicks and electronic gadgets rather than with parents, reading and learning something of value. The world was not made to entertain us, but rather for us to create a good passage illustrated by positive deeds while flowing through this ‘temporary’ life. I have been truly elated since this experience. Possibly my wine sopped eyes won’t allow

Euro NCAP give five star safety award to New Clio THE new Renault Clio has been awarded a five-star rating following passive tests carried out by Euro NCAP. This result, which was achieved in spite of a harshening of the independent body’s procedures in January 2012, provides a further illustration of Renault’s passive safety expertise. The New Clio attained a global score of 85 per cent – including the top ratings for child protection, pedestrian protection and safety equipment – which marks an improvement over its predecessor. The front end of the car was designed to minimise injury to pedestrians. The bumper has no salient edges, while the lower part of the windscreen, which is traditionally very rigid, was designed to reduce the risk of injury in an impact. HE Euro NCAP consortium has awarded the new Audi A3 the maximum five-star rating for passive crash safety. The results for adult occupant protection in a frontal, rear and side impact as well as child safety and pedestrian protection make the new Audi A3 one of the safest cars in its class. Pedestrian protection is a key issue for Audi and the car maker has delivered an outstanding solution: a specially designed front end incorporating an active bonnet, which is raised in the event of a collision using a pyrotechnic release mechanism to help mitigate the consequences of an accident. Halogen and LED daytime running lights make the Audi A3 more visible to pedestrians. Other driver assistance systems, such as the standard rest recommendation function, the optional speed limit display, adaptive cruise control, active lane assist and side assist systems are now also available to drivers of the compactclass model. The same also applies to the adaptive headlight range adjustment and full-LED headlights, which will filter down to certain A3 variants from the executive class in the near future. The A3 also comes with the multicollision brake – a safety function that received the 2012 Yellow Angel award from German motoring organisation
