OWNS across Andalucia have begun clearing the damage and debris left behind in the wake of floods which swept through the region last weekend. Locals were joined by volunteers in the cleaning e ff o r t s a n d a t t e m p t s t o salvage belongings while council workers, electricians and plumbers attempted to get basic services up and running. The total cost of the damage is estimated to be around €32 million, according to insurance companies. Parts of Malaga Province have been declared a catastrophe zone since the storms hit. FLOOD DAMAGE: Locals have been working to clean up flood-hit towns. said 25 roads equalling a length of 94 kilometres in total have been affected. Dozens of homes in the Loma Pontezuela and El Padron Alto areas of Estepona remained without electricity yesterday (Thursday). Workers with the Endesa power company have been called in to repair

damage that included toppled pylons, with 35 in total damaged in some way. The flash floods saw some villages left underwater when they struck last Sunday. Cars were also swept away and some people were left stranded, with emergency services

despatched to airlift trapped residents from their homes. Almost 400 litres per sqm of rainwater fell in parts of Malaga Province in the space of 24 hours, the largest amount ever recorded in the area according to S p a i n ’s AEMET Met Office. The storms were the

fifth major downpours so far this year and follow storms in Mallorca which left 13 people dead. Floodwater tore through the Arab Baths in Ronda damaging walls and causing an estimated €98,000 in damage to the site, parts of which date from the 13th century.

THE Guardia Civil is investigating the cause of death of a man who was found on a beach in Casares in Malaga on Tuesday afternoon. Believed to be about 50, the deceased was not carrying any kind of identification, and there were no immediate signs of violence. Officers received reports of a body floating about 100 metres from the coast between Casares and Manilva, at around 6pm. But when the emergency services arrived, the body had already been washed onto the shores of Ancha de Casares beach. Once the judicial authority ordered the removal of the deceased male, he was transferred to the Legal Medical Institute of Malaga, where forensic experts will try to determine the cause of death and find information that will help identify him.

Hospital honour THE Costa del Sol hospital has won a national award for its medicine service after being nominated twice in recent years. The hospital, in Marbella, won the Best Internal Medicine Service award at the Best in Class ceremony which is in its 13th year. It was also shortlisted for the Best Hospital award and its gynaecology and pneumology departments were finalists in their categories, the Junta de Andalucia said in a statement. The awards saw 120 hospitals take part across 39 different categories.

Silent rides T

HE music fell silent at the usually loud San Pedro Feria as the local council tried to make the event as inclusive as possible. Councillor Manuel Osorio explained that as a trial they turned the volume off on the fairground attractions for two hours to help children with autism spectrum disorders enjoy the fair in comfort. Youngsters with the condition can sometimes be alarmed by the noise, so by turning the music off they could enjoy a more relaxed environment while still taking part in the thrills of the rides. The councillor thanked the ride owners for their collaboration in the pilot initiative.

Tourism trends M ORE than 4.3 million people stayed in Costa del Sol hotels during the first nine months of this year, with the amount of Spanish tourists increasing, and international tourism falling. Figures from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) showed the number of Spanish travellers staying in the region rose by 3.4 per cent compared to the same time last year. The same statistics for holidaymakers coming from overseas showed levels had dropped by 0.5 per cent. Data for overnight stays showed Spanish holidaymakers increased by 5.1 per cent, while the amount of foreign tourists fell by 2 per cent. Elias Bendodo, president of the Costa del Sol’s Tourism Office, said tourism had continued to help create jobs in the region. “The Costa del Sol has shown similar figures to last year, which was the best year in history for tourism in the region”, Bendodo said. The total number of people who took jobs in Costa del Sol hotels between January and September, stood at more

Longer hours to pay respects

IJAS is extending its cemetery opening hours from this Friday, to accommodate the influx of visitors during the Feast of All Saints’ Day and the Dead. In addition, on Wednesday and Thursday, a special bus service will be provided while the facility is open to the public. Councillor in charge of the cemetery department, Mari Carmen Gonzalez (PSOE), said: “For this year we have extended the hours, making it easier for our residents to visit these facilities and make preparations prior to this holiday.” She stressed that the cemetery will remain open from 8am until the end of visits on Thursday.

As such, the facilities will be open to the public from 9am to 9pm from Friday to Wednesday, excluding Sunday when the times will be 9pm to 1pm. Gonzales added: “In addition, and as every year, improvements have been made in the weeks prior to this date so that everything is in perfect condition for the few days of so much affluence.” With regards to the bus service, she said: “The stops of this special service will be made in the Port, the Plaza Virgen de la Peña, Plaza de la Libertad, Barrio Santana and the cemetery. “We encourage people to use public transport, thus avoiding possible traffic problems by the large influx of users on days like these.”

Celebration of food FOR the fifth year running, the restaurant El Torreon is launching ‘Rice Week', a gastronomic event which takes place from this Tuesday to November 3. The Councillor for Tourism Josele Gonzalez (PSOE) said the food celebration is ‘undoubtedly an attraction for tourists to come to our town and enjoy the great cuisine of the area’. During the event, various preparations of the popular ingredient can be tasted by diners at lunchtimes and in the evenings. Gonzalez added, "Without a doubt this seems to us to be a great initiative that comes from an establishment known by many here in the heart of La Cala. “This summer alone they have served more than 15,000 plates of rice, which gives a good indica-

tion of its quality. That is why as a council we join and invite residents and visitors to enjoy this week dedicated to gastronomy.” Owner Salvador Gallardo, went on to say, “Every day we will offer a menu with a different rice, in what is undoubtedly for us a very special event and of which we are very proud.” In addition, at the proposal of the Association of Merchants of La Cala, the gastronomic event will be dedicated to Maria Tamayo, responsible for many years for the venta (sale) of La Butibamba. “The first day will be a special tribute to this beloved woman in La Cala and the undisputed part in the cuisine of Mijas that is the sale of La Butibamba, a day that will undoubtedly be very emotional,” said Gonzalez.

Beard off pays off A

FTER losing her husband to cancer, Joan Hunt has spent her life building and running Cudeca Hospice in Benaldamena. And in recognition of her dedication, she was recently given a €750 boost thanks to a donation from the president of La Cala de Mijas Lions Club, Margaret Bobowicz, and other members who visited the facility. The cash was raised after the partner of the club’s social secretary, Jerry Long, decided to shave off his beard to raise money for the local community. Vice president Anita Humphrey said: “This generous gesture was very much appreciated by Joan, who said she was proud to have been associated with the Lions over many years.” She added that many members of the club have benefitted from the care given by the team at the

Park call MIJAS’ mayor has called on the Junta de Andalucia to sign off plans for a new park near the town almost one year after they were first proposed. Mijas Council claimed the Junta had not acted on plans for the park set for Las Lagunas, which would cover 35,000 square metres and cost €15 million to build. The regional authority has not made a state-

ment about it and has not drawn up reports which would allow contracts for the works to be tendered, the council added. Juan Carlos Maldonado, the mayor of Mijas, said: “There have been many meetings over the last two years to take this plan forward. Every day of delay is a day less of enjoyment for Mijas residents.”

Setting sail A CRUISE line company has said it will no longer base itself in the port of Malaga City as of next year. Marella Cruises, previously known as Thomson, has started and ended cruises from Malaga City since 2016. It now plans to change port so it can offer new routes to its customers, according to Malaga City’s

Port Authority. Paulino Plata, President of the Port Authority, said it was normal for cruise companies to move to and from harbours. “Some shipping companies will leave and others will arrive,” Plata said. Marella said it will still continue to dock in Malaga City while sailing between other ports.

Ex-mayor dies E

N R IQU E B OLIN , the mayor of Benalmadena for 24 years who some say made the town what it is today, has died after falling in his home. Tributes for the former mayor, who also served as a Senator for Malaga Province in Spain’s Parliament, have poured in from local political parties. Bolin was dubbed the ‘inventor ’ of Benalmadena for his backing of attractions including the Tivoli World theme park and Puerto Marina as part of efforts to raise the town’s profile. He was also controversial and was embroiled in several scandals including over drugs and allegations of corruption. Victor Navas, the current mayor of Benalmadena, said Bolin was “dedicated” to the people of the town. “He was the politician who governed our municipality the longest and he left an indelible mark. He was the architect of the Benalmadena that we know today,” Navas said. Bolin became the youngest mayor in Spain when he was

Clemente Diaz boulevard. She argued the work is ‘necessary’ as at the moment, the space providing by the bridge is sufficient for road traffic, but not for pedestrians. Mula said: “I hope that the answer is positive because it is necessary for our city.”

Mammoth clear up at equine sanctuary By Tara Rippin

HE freak weather of last weekend wreaked havoc at the Refugio del Burrito de Fuente de Piedra in Malaga. Since 8am on Sunday morning, the team of one of the largest equine sanctuaries in Spain, has dedicated all its efforts to ensuring the protection of the animals. This has involved evacuating endangered equines to safer pastures and keeping them calm at all times. For days after the storm, the refuge was without light, the road was flooded and the stables and meadows, particularly in the quarantine zone, were severely damaged. A spokeswoman said earlier in the week: “The quarantine zone, which houses the animals that have just been rescued from mistreatment or abandonment of the facilities, has been most affected. “In this area three meadows are completely useless and their stables need to be rebuilt. A mobile stable has been completely damaged, the walls have been broken by the force of water and filled with stones and mud.” She added that the priority is that all mules, donkeys and people are safe. “Fear was the protagonist during the whole storm, but the specialist team of the

The team’s priority now is to drain the sewers, make a new water channel throughout the sanctuary to prevent further incidents, rebuild the damaged stables, replace the destroyed mobile stable and clean mud from the land. Council transport spokesperson Nuria Rodriguez said the town lived in large part off the earnings from the taxis. AS a result of being laid low with what my late partner Brian called ‘fou-fou flu’ - his term for drama queen sniffles - I decided to hand this week’s column over to Fifi, our Mini-Pinscher, and her lifelong companion Bijou, a Patterdale terrier. I set up a digital tape recorder and went to bed for two days. Later I ran the recording through a translation program called ‘Woof’ta English’ and listened to what they had been saying about me. Fifi: ‘Our pet’s being far more waspish than usual. I know he’s not well, but when he gets up for a pee or another dose of Frenadol, he swears and bangs things about, giving me the screaming habdabs. I wish he’d get a grip. It’s doing my head in.’ Bijou: ‘I know what’s up. It’s a combination of man-flu and the fury that’s been dogging him - pardon the pun - ever since he had his evening ruined by a bunch of screaming geriatric delinquents from Northern Ireland, a day before he became ill.’

Player painting ESTEPONA has a new giant painting to add to its already impressive ‘mural route,’ with large-scale works of art on the walls of buildings. The latest addition is Team Spirit, which mural artist Francisco Alarcon has been painting on the wall of the Ramon Cazorla sports hall. The picture shows members of the Minibasket Femenino 06 team of Estepona’s Club de Amigos de Baloncesto basketball club, who this year became provincial and Andalucian champions. This is Alarcon’s third mural in the town, and measures 14 metres in height which he reached with the help of a cherry picker.

by Darren Parmenter AROUND 150 people turned up in the brightest possible colours for the funeral of 10-year-old Nigel Watson who lost his brave fight in the early hours of last Sunday morning. The service took place in a packed to the rafters Guardamar Tanatorio on Tuesday afternoon, and was attended by many of his family, friends, and residents of Urbanisation La Marina and beyond who all joined together to celebrate the life of a very popular young boy. People woke up to the news on Sunday morning after his devastated mum, Jackie, posted the following message on Facebook: ‘It’s with great sadness to tell you that Nigel gained his angel wings this morning.’

Direct object pronouns - some examples Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WELL I’m quite pleased with myself, because I’ve managed to explain to my own satisfaction the meaning and use of the direct object pronoun in Spanish, which is no small task. Whether I’ve explained it to your satisfaction is quite another matter, but there again, that’s the beauty of writing for a newspaper. You never actually find out what confusion you might have caused. What I promised this week was a bit of consolidation. That is, looking at what we have already talked about in some sort of context. Even this isn’t as easy as you might think, because in many typical everyday sentences some other pesky things called indirect object pronouns pop up all over the place, and I’m attempting to keep them out of it for the time being. Here are one or two examples anyway: Mi madre me visita cada verano. My mother visits me every summer. Te veo mañana a la misma hora, vale? I’ll see you tomorrow at the same time, okay? Lo comió todo de un tirón. He (or she) ate it all in one go. Now, these three examples obey the rule we looked at before which said that we have to put the direct object pronoun in front of the verb, and after the subject if there is one, as in: Mi madre me visita … (My mother me visits …) However, there are three instances, and these are in fact very common, where the direct object pronoun appears in a different place in the sentence. Here they are, and I’m sure some will sound familiar to you, in fact one type we have looked at a bit already. The direct object pronoun can be tacked onto the end of these three forms:

1. The gerund (ie. -ing equivalent). Estoy comprándolo, (I am buying it) Ese hombre está mirándote (That man is looking at you) 2. The imperative (i.e. commands). Hazlo (do it), espéranos (wait for us) 3. Infinitives (the basic form) Tienes que explicarlo (You have to explain it). Voy a buscaros (I’m going to look for you, I’m going to get you - plural you). You may have noticed that in some of these examples we have added an accent. That is there to preserve the emphasis on the correct part of the verb and make sure it is not distorted by making the word longer. One more important point for today: in the case gerunds (no. 1) and infinitives (no. 3), the direct object pronouns can in fact go in either place in a sentence, the difference just being a case of style and choice. So all the examples below are correct. Estoy comprándolo. or Lo estoy comprando. Ese hombre está mirándote. or Ese hombre te está mirando. Tienes que explicarlo. or Lo tienes que explicar. Voy a buscaros. or Os voy a buscar. If you’re not really coping with this, and I imagine that some of you aren’t, I can only console you by saying that this is one of the fiddliest things we ever have to learn. If you haven’t got it, forget it for now, or just memorise one or two examples you think might be useful. See you next week - I hope!

Saucy tapas UENGIROLA has begun gearing up for its annual E r o t i c Ta p a s R o u t e which has now been running for 10 years. T h e t o w n ’s c o u n c i l s a i d t h e event would take place from next Thursday to November 18. Mayor Ana Mula said at an event to unveil plans for the day that a total of 72 bars and restaurants would be taking part. A tapas dish and drink will be available from participating establishments for €2.50 all together. The dishes are created especially for the event, Fuengirola Council said in a statement. Mula said the council had originally created the event to bring business into the town during what is typically a quiet month for food and drinks venues. “Our Erotic Tapas Route was a pioneer event and it has been so successful that other towns have imitated us,” the mayor said. Fuengirola Council said in a statement: “The town will once

again show off its most sensual side to celebrate the 10th edition of the Erotic Tapas Route.” The event also features a competition with the public set to poll on their favourite restaurants from the route. A panel will then decide on the top three winners from a list of 10 finalists. Attendees at the event will also be asked to rate their favourite dishes on a scale of one to five, with a special prize going to the venue which made it. Members of the public attending the event will have the chance to take part in a raffle. They will be given a booklet which must be stamped by 10 of the participating venues and handed in at the Tourism Office for a chance to enter. Prizes include a motorcycle, a 60-inch TV, holidays, hotel nights, dinners and a Playstation 4. www.thelittlegeranium.com IN preparation for our Halloween week at The Little Geranium (starting on Tuesday until November 3) I was carving some pumpkins, as you do… Michele came over and said but what do you do with all the pumpkin flesh? “Well I make a soup or a pie with it,” I said, “or I could do a lamb and pumpkin tagine.” It came to mind from the memory of cooking for a dear friend around Halloween time who has been on my mind and in my dreams for the last few weeks. He is Chico, famous from X Factor and for knocking Madonna off the top No 1 spot with his hit Chico Time! The reason he has been on my mind is

because he recently had a stroke. He is OK and recovering rapidly but he’s in my thoughts, especially from something my brother said. So I was cooking in my little kitchen like any normal day and my mobile rings. Now all of my family and friends know not to call me during cooking hours so I took the call in case it was urgent. Have you heard the sad news my brother said? Chico died he said. I was speechless and felt ill and cold. I sent the dish I was cooking and went over to the table to see if they were OK. The guests looked at me and said what’s wrong, you look pale and sad. So I told them about the terrible news. Before I could finish one of them said … he is not dead he just had a stroke. He had heard about it on the news that day. I immediately messaged Danni his wife and she confirmed that he was in hospital in good care and will recover quickly due to his fitness.

HAPPY TIMES: Steven with his mum and Chico (centre). So what has all this to do with a tagine of lamb? Well, it was a dish I once cooked for Chico and his friends - he is of Moroccan origin. Chico is a pretty fussy eater due to his fitness regime. I cooked this at an event that he was hosting, it was a Ready Steady Cook event with David Van Day as my assistant (formerly of Bucks Fizz) He swapped hats with me and his was so

wide I could barely see what I was cooking! I had some lamb and I turned it into a tagine but a speedy 20-minute version, keeping the lamb pink. Tagine or Tajine is a Moroccan dish named after the dish that it is cooked in. It’s an ancient African/Arabic dish dating back as far as the 9th century. The Arabs added the dried fruits like apricots, dates, sultanas, plums and nuts. There are many recipes for a tagine, mine is influenced a bit by the Moors by adding olives as they are plentiful here in Spain, but you can add or subtract some of the things to get the flavours you love in this delicious stew. It is ideal for all the horrible weather we have been having recently. Serve with lots of fresh coriander and parsley on top and if you have a tagine dish it adds the wow factor. Serve with couscous traditionally or rice or even potatoes, there are no hard and fast rules. I often add vegetables like the pumpkin or squash or even carrots so that’s like a one pot dish with everything you love in it. Do try it and enjoy!

Tagine of Lamb Ingredients serves 4 • 2 flat tsp cayenne pepper or hot chilli powder • 2 tsp ground black pepper • 1 tbsp of mild paprika or pimiento dulce • 1 tbsp ground ginger • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tbsp of coriander seeds • 1 x shoulder of lamb trimmed and cut into 5cm/2in chunks (about 1.5kg meat in total) • 2 large onions sliced • 3 cloves garlic crushed • 250ml tomato juice • 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes • 120g approx dried apricots, cut in half • 50g dates cut in half • 85g flaked almonds toasted • 2 tbsp of of black pitted olives • 3 tbsp of chopped pumpkin (or squash) in 1cm cubes • 500ml lamb stock or chicken stock • 1 glass of red wine • 1 tbsp honey

• Juice of three whole lemons • 4 tbsp fresh coriander roughly chopped • 2 tbsp flat leaf parsley roughly chopped • 3 tbsp Olive oil or Argan oil (Moroccan oil) for frying

Method 1. Put the cayenne, black pepper, paprika, coriander seeds, ground ginger, and cinnamon in a bowl and mix well. Toss the lamb through the spices so that they stick to the meat and keep left over spices. If you have time cover the lamb and leave overnight in the fridge. 2. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas2. 3. Heat the olive oil or argan oil in a large casserole dish. Add the onion and the pumpkin chunks and the remaining spices and cook over a gentle heat for a few minutes so that the onions are soft but not coloured. Now add the crushed garlic and stir well. 4. In a separate frying pan, brown the cubes of spiced lamb on all sides then add the lamb to your casserole dish. Pour in the tomato juice and mix well.

New radiation therapy is proving more effective CANCER of the larynx is diagnosed in around 3,725 people a year in Spain. It has a particularly high incidence rate in those with head and neck tumours, and is more prevalent in men, with smoking and alcohol raising the risk factors. Oncologists say radiotherapy is an effective treatment and if detected early enough, can avoid the need for surgery. Hypofractionated radiotherapy, which comprises a higher dosage given in fewer treatments, has also shown to improve the survival of sufferers. According to a recent study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, in which more than 10,000 US patients participated for more than 10 years, hypofractionation radiotherapy in laryngeal carcinomas in early stages one and two resulted in increased patient survival. The five-year increase in survival for patients with stage two laryngeal cancer is estimated at 70.8 per cent when treat-

ed with hypofractionated radiation therapy, but reduced to 64.5 per cent with conventional radiation therapy. Oncologists in Spain believe that concentrating the treatment in 28 to 30 sessions instead of the usual 35 is considered one of the main advances in treating cases, and is increasingly being incorporated into clinical practice as it has been shown to have the same toxicity, side effects, and greater disease control over conventional radiotherapy. Laryngeal cancers are one of the cancers that are found the quickest. As it can lead to a change in the voice, it is often detected at an early stage. If a hoarse change in your voice lasts more than two weeks, contact your doctor. Other symptoms to look out for include a sore throat which does not go away, constant coughing, pain when swallowing, trouble breathing, ear pain and weight loss. Lumps or masses can also appear in the neck.

Going electric... cheaper than believed

CCORDING to car market experts CAP HPI, the cost of maintaining an electric car is much less than many people think. A recent report showed that it costs an average of 23 per cent less than what is involved in the traditional petrol engine. Itâ€™s accepted that the initial cost of buying an electric car is higher than the equivalent brand of fuel-driven model, but at least for the present, they are significantly cheaper to run. The headline for low EV running costs is how much cheaper they are to refuel than a petrol or diesel car, with the (almost) untaxed electricity making EVs very appealing. However, all that is likely to change when electric cars

reach a significant percentage of new car sales. CAP HPI believes that there will be a drop of fuel duty for petrol and diesel

cars, and for it to be replaced with road pricing where drivers pay a fixed amount per every mile driven.

But even when that happens, electric cars will still have a cost advantage over an ICE car, with CAP HPI reporting that, on av-

erage, EVs cost 23 per cent less to maintain than an equivalent ICE car. Even for a small car like the Renault Zoe, there would be a saving of 35.7 per cent over three years when compared to a Vauxhall Corsa; and in the case of the Nissan Leaf - the most popular electric car in the UK - the saving over the same period when put up against a VW Golf 1.0 TSI, is still 19 per cent. THE Eurafrica Trail began in October 2014 with a single idea. To create the first crosscountry race over two continents around the Strait of Gibraltar. It was an ambitious and noble challenge, and the first two races saw 1,000 participants from nine different countries compete. The third Eurafrica Trail in 2017 was the first mountain

race anywhere in the world to be held between two continents and three countries, with Gibraltar providing the starting point before it moved on to Spain and Morocco. This year, it will again begin at Gibraltar, before moving on to Algeciras and Belyounech while taking in the two Pillars of Hercules. In addition to the competitive side of the event, the

Eurafrica Trail organisers are conscious of the natural environment within which the race is held and the communities that it involves. As a result, there have been initiatives such as the planting of the Eurafrica Forest and the cleaning of rivers in the Alcornocales Natural Park in Cadiz. The 2018 race will kick off on Wednesday, from Europa Point at 3.00pm.

Due to the works being carried out at the Lathbury Sports Complex, the 4km vertical climb this year will change, and will go through Windmill Hill and Jew’s Gate. The race, which involves routes through some of the most beautiful parts of Cadiz and Morocco, will end on November 4. More information can be found on the website: eu rafricatrail.com.
