Malaga airport chaos as Ryanair strike continues Fin Whales now appearing off the coast of Spain.

Endangered whales sighted off Spanish coast A POD of the endangered Fin Whales has been spotted off the coast in Spain near Gibraltar. The Fin Whale was heavily hunted during the 20th century and is considered as an endangered species. Closely related to the Humpback Whale its food consists of small schooling fish, squid and crustaceans.

The second largest mammal after the Blue Whale, it can grow up to 27 metres long and weigh over 100 tons. In spite of its weight it is sometimes referred to as the greyhound of the sea due to the long slender body and the speed at which it can travel, is able to surpass even the fastest ocean liner. Conservationists will be

happy to know that they are once again inhabiting the Atlantic Ocean.

HUNDREDS of passengers could be left stranded at Malaga airport as Ryanair continues strike action. Up to 200 of the 830 flights Ryanair operates per day might be affected, with Malaga airport being the busiest route. Delays and cancellations have already begun this week as passengers struggle to return from holiday destinations along the coast. The airport is inundated with frustrated travellers who are experiencing delays of over four hours. More airport staff have been employed to help cope with the ongoing situation. In the first quarter the airline transported 2.1 million passengers between the Costa del Sol’s international airport and major European cities.

The company has offered alternative dates and routes to disappointed holidaymakers or full refunds for flights cancelled. Further problems for the airport and the Spanish government will come next week during the walkout days next Wednesday and Thursday, given that under Irish law, crews are not forced to work minimum hours during industrial action and may not be legally obliged to comply with local legislation.

A FORMER British Ambassador to the USA, Sir Nigel Sheinwald, recently said that the special relationship between Britain and America during the Regan/Thatcher years was a myth. He explained that Ronald Regan did not support Britain during the Falklands conflict and indeed kept Margaret Thatcher in the dark at the time of the invasion of Grenada, a member of the Commonwealth over which Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State. The special relationship was first referred to by Winston Churchill but for many years, whilst it appeared to be a good idea, the reality has been that Britain has either been ignored or persuaded to get involved in military campaigns. Now, of the 29 members of NATO who undertook to spend 2 per cent of GDP on defence, just five actually do so and they are USA (3.6), Greece (2.4), Estonia (2.1), UK (2.1) and Poland (2). Spain spends just 0.9 per cent, even though it has a very successful military pro-

As a businessman, rather than a statesman, President Trump suggested at the latest NATO summit that the spend by the USA was in order to protect the likes of Germany, a country which is now completely dependent upon Russia for supplies of natural gas.

He effectively asked why America should spend so much money to help defend Germany against Russia for Germany to spend billions of euros helping to keep the Russian economy strong. It is a somewhat disingenuous argument as the amount spent is not compulsory and is not paid over to NATO but is the amount spent on the military of each country by their defence departments. One Pole, who had grown up under com-

munist rule, has been quoted on social media and in the press as saying ‘Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don’t have all that many.’ After having fired a few telling shots to members of NATO and the EU, Donald Trump made it to the UK to meet his ‘new, old friend’ Theresa May who must have been mortified that he arranged to give an interview to The Sun newspaper, which was published as he arrived for dinner with the prime minister and her husband. He made it clear that in his opinion, her blueprint for the UK divorce with the European Union would make it impossible to sign bilateral trade deal with the US. Commenting on the Chequers plan, which would keep the UK aligned with the EU on many trade regulations he said that accepted by the EU it ‘will definitely affect trade with the United States, unfortunately in a negative way.’ Adding, “I would have done it much differently, I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me. She wanted to go a different route.” To say that the timing of his interview, and indeed entire visit, was unfortunate would be an understatement and just goes to support the suggestion that there is no special relationship, although he did later suggest that his comment was ‘fake news’ until the recorded interview was published. In the words of 1970’s rock band Supertramp, ‘Crisis what Crisis?’

MARBELLA Council has set about the removal of almost 30 empty billboards from various sites around the towns along the coast between Las Chapas, Marbella and San Pedro de Alcantara. The illegal billboards that were erected without the correct permissions several years ago, did not conform to the required measure-

ments allowed to be situated in populated areas and by the side of the main A7 roads. The council removed the billboards that measured 8 x 2 and 9 x 3 metres because they did not confirm to the necessary requirements. The trade councillor responsible for the operation, Jose Eduardo Diaz, stressed that the removal of

the offending boards had been earmarked as ‘a priority for the government because there are elements that cause a great visual impact in the areas where they are located and their elimination improves the image of the municipality.’ Last month 20 billboards were removed from roundabouts and strategic locations in the area.

TESLA, the luxury American car company, has opened its first pop-up shop in Puerto Banus. The store located at the PYR Hotel will offer prospective clients the opportunity to learn more about the latest

models - Model S and Model X. Demonstrations will be given by team personnel and a chance to test drive one of the models on display. The store will remain open until Friday August 31.

OFFICERS of the National Police have arrested two men in a pharmacy in Fuengirola, for alleged drug trafficking. Police seized 13 grams of hashish, eight grams of marihuana,

and an undisclosed quantity of cocaine. The men, aged 31 and 32, are of Senegalese origin and part of a criminal organisation. All of the narcotics were arranged in individual doses, ready for

sale and consumption, and €635 was also discovered. An investigation was started after police were tipped off about the illegal transactions, and set up surveillance equipment.

Call for action THE association of traders and businessmen in Benalmadena (ACEB) has called for urgent action to be taken against the illegal street sellers who are threatening their livelihood. The group described the situation as critical and blame the lack of police and council representatives. Shop owners claim that the competition is unfair, the illegal street sellers even displaying their goods in doorways of their premises. In April a plan was agreed on by the mayors and councillors of Citizens Security, Commerce and Street Sales of Benalmadena and Torre-

molinos, together with the action group ACEB. It proposed greater coordination between the Local and National Police and that a campaign would be launched with leaflets distributed to raise awareness amongst the public of the illegality of the ‘looky-looky’ men. They stressed that by supporting and encouraging the street sellers there is a risk of unemployment in the areas due to the closure of businesses. None of these proposals have, as yet been implemented causing further frustration.

Street vandalism HE cost of vandalism, theft and destruction to public property in Marbella is reportedly as high as €500,000 per annum, according to a new report. The half-yearly figures released by the town council give a breakdown of the funds spent repairing and replacing damage done in communal areas around the municipality. Public parks and gardens have racked up a cost of €30,658 so far this year, with damages including defacing of public furniture and bins costing €4,500, destruction and theft of irrigation systems totalling €3,676 and breakages i n c h i l d r e n ’s p l a y a r e a s a n d dog parks amounting to €11,719. A surprisingly high amount of damages recorded by the council between January and June appears to be the theft of plants, with €11,000 spent on replacing 5,238 flowers

Police investigate death of boy THE National Police are investigating the death of a 19year-old Colombian boy who died last Saturday morning in Benalmadena. Emergency services were called on Saturday when it was reported that a young man was lying motionless on the floor. Health personnel from the National and Local Police attended the scene. Although his death was announced t o d a y, forensic tests are being carried out to determine the cause of death - evidence points towards alcohol poisoning.

Investigation opens into baby death AN investigation has opened into the case of the new born baby found at the Environmental Rubbish dump in Casares. The case has been referred to Court No 4 in Estepona where the Judge has ordered a full inquiry. Hospitals and Health Centres throughout the area are being asked to report any cases of women who had given birth or been attended to for symptoms relating to childbirth recently. The investigation is complicated due to the fact that the waste treated at this tip is collected from 11 municipalities along the coast. The new born baby was found in a grey plastic bin, used by all 11 areas for collecting organic waste. By the time the workers had discovered the body, it was too late to detect exactly which area it had

come from. The body of the baby was found at 10 o’clock on Saturday morning as workers were sorting out the rubbish deposited from collections the previous evening. There was blood on the body but no signs of external injuries. The process at the rubbish dump involves three stages, during the first two stages it is easy to determine the origin of the waste as it is sorted according to the collection area. Unfortunately, the discovery wasn’t made until the third stage when all the collections from the various municipalities are gathered together. The Guardia Civil were called to the scene. The site was closed and a thorough search carried out in an attempt to find anything that might be relative to the case.

Casares clean up CASARES Council has allocated €12,000 of funding to clear debris and rubbish from coastal areas around Casares Costa. The municipal plots around Marina de Casares and Camarate Urbanisation next to

the road are cleaned every summer to attract tourism and reduce the risk of fires. Owners of private plots around the area are required by the local town council to clean their own plots.

FAKE NEWS: People were scammed with false documents.

Two women arrested in fraud scam OFFICERS of the National Police have arrested two Spanish women in Murcia, for alleged crimes of fraud and forgery. The suspects, 30 and 35 years old, offered people loans online, ranging from €300 to €60,000, and asked for advance payments for

processing purposes. The initial payments requested were in the region of €75 and €2,000, and the detainees were able to scam people out of a total of more than €10,000. During their investigations, officers discovered around online 45 adver-

tisements, and of course the loans offered were never paid. Police enquiries began after a complaint was filed from a resident in Fuengirola in relation to the forgery of his name and signature, with which the suspects were producing their false documents.

Property taxes MANILVA Council has granted subsidies to almost 3,000 residents to reduce their IBI (property tax) by 30 per cent. Applications for the grant were accepted for 2,880 residential properties and a further 47 for business premises. The Minister for Financial Affairs, Marcos Ruiz, stressed the importance of these grants stating that by approving them it meant the loss of income of €400,000 for the town council. In order to be considered for these subsidies, residents must prove that the said properties are in their name and, in the case of residential properties, that it is their home. Last April the council were forced to cancel the grants they had approved due to a new bylaw that stated previous recipients are not allowed to reapply. The government sub-delegation considered this to be illegal. They took the decision to revert to an old law allowing them to proceed with the subsidies. This previous law that they applied expires this year, however Marcos Ruiz stated that the government sub-delegation are looking into various ways to allow them to lower the rate of the property tax (IBI). The mayor, Mario Jimenez, said it is certainly not the aim of the council to increase taxes.

The coast has become a favourite choice of destination for these weekends, but already several towns and cities including Granada, Sevilla and Marbella have introduced restrictions to discourage this type of tourism. Marbella Town Hall is introducing new by-laws in an effort to regain the exclusive image of the town. These include laws to impose a strict dress code, preventing seminudism in public places. Bikinis and swimwear are only to be worn on the beaches or at swimming pools and men must wear a t-shirt or other top. It will be forbidden to carry sex dolls or sex

The proposed project would include a commercial and leisure centre, as well as two new chiringuitos (beach clubs) alongside Marina Alcaidesa and Avenida Principe de Asturias. cut-off date in September for online registering. Under the 2016 regional Andalucian law, any owner wanting to use a property for short term

The seminar held by health professionals was aimed to teach the lifeguards procedures and preventative measures they could demonstrate to bathers on Marbella beaches in an effort to combat risks involved with excessive sun exposure and skin cancer risks. Councillor, Manuel Cardeña, explained that the seminar between other objectives was a chance for, ‘these professionals to develop proactive and preventive strategies of photo education in the shore and become good role models of photoprotection on our coasts’. The seminar, organised by the Health Agency together with the Costa del Sol division of the Junta de Andalucía was attended by delegates from Marbella, Mijas and Fuengirola.

A WILDFIRE that broke out in Mijas has been stabilised. Firefighters worked through the night to tackle the blaze, which broke out in La Majadilla. Six aircraft were involved in the containment effort and specialist teams from INFOCA were joined by firefighters from Mijas, Fuengirola and Marbella. Two houses were evacuated despite no damage to them and crews remained on the scene until it was fully extinguished.

AN estimated €6 million is to be spent on a project to relocate a sewage plant. Details of the plan to move the plant at Los Monteros away from the beach, including the removal of 15 holding tanks, were revealed by Marbella mayor, Angeles Muñoz, together with the president of the Municipality Association, Margarita del Cid and Councillor for the Environment, Manuel Cardenas. The Mayor said “It is a major project which Acosol is confronting after complaints from the public.” He also

pointed out that this will add 800 linear metres to the beach. According to Munoz the work will commence in October and will take about a year to complete. The project will be carried out in three phases: the first will be to relocate the substation. The second will focus on installing an emergency spillway and the third phase will concentrate on enhancing this stretch of coastline. She then explained that the project includes reclaiming the beach at ‘La Adelfa’ in

the Bahia Marbella urbanisation and stressed that the new section of the Paseo Maritimo will be key to this as it will provide easier access to the beach. Del Cid, for her part, emphasised the function of these installations. They are to channel sewage from Marbella and Ojen to the purification plant in Marbella. She went on to say the project is the result of collaboration between administrations, enabling the improvement to integral sanitation and minimising impact on the landscape.

THE Marbella Book Fair will be held this year from today (Friday) until August 19. The programme will include book presentations, book signings and workshops for children.

The fair will be held on the Paseo de la Alameda in Marbella, where this summer 18 booksellers stalls will be set up. The Councilor for Culture, Carmen Diaz, who presented the news said,

“This edition is complimented by the programming of ‘Marpoetica,’ a tribute to the bookstores, giving support to these businesses that are seeing huge competition from the internet.”

Man sentenced for breaking and entering A MAN has been given a two-year suspended sentence by a court in Malaga after breaking and entering a house in Marbella. Two women were in the house when the man, who was wandering around the street in the early hours, kicked the door down causing damage estimated to be €590. After entering the house, he became angry when the owners asked him to leave and grabbed one of the inhabitants by the throat, threatening to hit her with an ashtray. He was eventually arrested by the National Police.

The court heard that at the time of the offence, he was under the influence of drugs and not in any state of mind to acknowledge his actions. They were also told that he had already paid for the damage to the door. Although he was originally given a six-month prison term, the judge took into account his drug addiction and reduced the ruling to a suspended sentence provided he commits no more crimes during the next two years. He was also fined €540.

CARMEN MONTON, the Health Minister in the relatively new PSOE government in Madrid, has announced a series of healthcare reforms. These are to include a gradual return to free prescriptions for state pensioners, and that includes those who receive a pension from another country. Until around 2012, pensioners always used to get free prescriptions irrespective of their income. It was at that point that the Partido Popular (PP) - in government at the time - introduced a 10 per cent charge for medication which also applies to people whose gross annual income is €18,000 or less. It was soon realised after

POLICE PLEA: The councils want greater security for residents and tourists.

Mayors demand bigger police presence MANILVA and Casares mayors have urged the central government to increase law enforcement in an effort to reduce drug smuggling. The spectacular highspeed chase that took place on Monday when a refuelling boat on a trafficking mission was caught on Sabinillas beach, has highlighted the increasing problem of drug trafficking along the coastal area west of Estepona. The geographic location of Manilva, close to La Linea and the Gibraltar Strait, coupled with eight kilometres of long sandy beaches make it an easy target for drug traffickers to bring narcotics into Spain with fast speedboats and per-

sonal watercrafts. The town mayor, Mario Jimenez described the incident on Monday as ‘an isolated case.’ He went on to say: “whilst I acknowledge that it was an unusual situation, the police’s actions did not take into account that there were beachgoers in the area.” He also expressed his concern about the negative press and what effect it could have on tourism in the area. The fight against trafficking is high priority for the town council. A few months ago, 630 kilos of hashish were seized on a nearby beach known as Tubalitas. Currently Manilva only has 22 Guardia Civil officers working in the area

along with 30 policeman from the Local Police force. The mayor has requested more law enforcement in the municipality, especially during the summer months when tourism can exceed 50,000. Luis Callejon, president of the Association of Entrepreneurs and Hoteliers of the Costa del Sol (Aehcos) was quick to add: “If it were something that was repeated regularly, we would be the first to ask that barriers be put in place so that it does not happen again, but that does not mean that Malaga is not a safe destination. On the contrary, generally our destination is safe and peaceful.”

Migrant sea rescue OVER 100 migrants who were attempting to enter Spain on Sunday have been transported by officials to Tarifa and Algeciras ports. Sixty-eight people, including a heavily pregnant woman, were taken to Tarifa port in the province of Cadiz. Later in the day the coastguard ship ‘Maria Zambrano’ transferred a further 50 to the port of Algeciras. The small boat containing 35 people, was spotted in Spanish waters just off the coast in La Linea by local authorities. Several of the boatload were children and at least

15 of them males of sub-Saharan origin. The vessel was followed by two further dinghies, one with nine people and the third one containing a further six. The Guardia Civil, Local Police and the Red Cross were notified to attend to the migrants when they arrived at both ports. The total of migrants arriving in Spain over the weekend has surpassed 800, with portable cabins being erected in strategic locations to try and accommodate the massive influx.

Book burning fest

Experience and common sense tell us that these weasel words are racist as they are solely aimed at removing the rights of ethnic-Europeans. The intention of these shadowy groups is to remove all material that endorses racial equality for ethnic-Europeans. Ethnic pride and preference is celebrated with the sole exception of White pride which is now dubbed ‘race hate.’ When ethnic-Europeans express preference for their own kind, as do 7.4 billion other people, it is classed as a criminal offence. Hundreds of books that once educated and inspired people of all ethnicities have been furtively removed from library

Amazon has removed hundreds of book titles, many of which are sourced in academia. As a publisher I am familiar with the taboo titles. By no stretch of the imagination could these books be categorised as ‘supremacist,’ ‘racist’ or ‘Nazi.’ They simply challenge the prevailing orthodoxy. Finnish political analyst Petri Krohn, says, “I have seen many users abandoning Facebook and moving to other social media platforms because they think that Facebook is nowadays too restrictive on their speech.” In Soviet-occupied Europe, nonconformists used independent printers and underground publishers just as dissident writers in Britain and Europe do today.

Banned and censored dissident authors are now returning in droves to print-on-demand book publishers. The only downside is that orders need to be paid up front. But as print runs are now as low as 100 and priced at less than €5 per copy it would be a wise commercial decision anyway. Amazon notoriously treats authors and employees as kitchen skivvies. The publisher skims 55 per cent off the cover price, profits further by loading shipping costs and pays its authors a miserly 8 per cent of the cover price after tax. Sorry, Amazon, you are not ditching dissident authors, dissenting writers are ditching you. Council appoints more Local Police

tor, four Sub Inspectors and four officers. Once the deadline expires and the council has reviewed all the applications they will issue a list of all the successful candidates as well as those that have been rejected. The Socialist Councillor, Javier Porcuna recently urged the mayor, Angeles Muñoz to urgently make available additional Local Police to patrol Puerto Banus. Mr Porcuna is concerned with the lack of security in the area especially at night when visitors to the port are leaving bars and nightclubs. He said that between the hours of 4am and 7am there are only four policemen on duty and that these are the hours in which security becomes necessary. Angeles Muñoz recently launched a campaign to crack down on anti-social behaviour in Marbella and Puerto Banus. New by-laws are to be introduced and fines of up to €750 can be imposed on anyone considered to be causing disruption.

Located on Alfredo Palma Avenue, the building is 1,000 square metres and mayor Muñoz said: “We have had approval from the Junta de Andalucia and this is an important project that we have been requesting for some time.”

The council has been able to find the funds for the renovations works due to monies recovered from legal cases of corruption, including the infamous ‘Malaya’ case. The new premises will have 11 classrooms, a multipurpose room, a library, an archive space, among other facilities. Mayor Muñoz expects the School of Languages to be up and running by September 2009.

More or e - i root-changing verbs Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE finished off last week’s article on our third category of root-changing verbs, namely ‘e to i.’ This root change only occurs in the ‘-ir’ group of verbs and, as we said, some of the most common ones are: decir (to say, to tell), pedir (to ask for, to order), medir (to measure), seguir (to follow, to continue) and repetir (to repeat). We looked at the example ‘pedir’ (to ask for, to request, to order) and that is where we will start off from today, as it is a nice clear one to understand: pido pides pide

As you can see, there are certain constants here which apply to all root-

changing verbs. The first is, of course, that the endings are the same as for all ‘-ir’ verbs. The second is that the root changes, in this case ‘e to i,’ occur in the first, second and third persons singular and the third person plural (pido, pides, pide, piden). The first and second persons plural revert to the same root as the infinitive of the verb (pedimos, pedís). Finally, the beat or emphasis in each case falls on the changed roots where they occur, and on the endings ‘-imos and -ís’ where the root change doesn’t occur. All of that is identical in principle to all other root-changing verbs. The part that perhaps makes these ‘e to i’ verbs appear more confusing is that there is an inverse relationship between what is happening to the root and what is happening to the endings, since the ‘-ir’ verb endings involve the letter ‘e’ except in first and second persons plural where they involve the letter ‘i’ giving us ‘pides’ (you order singular you)and ‘pedís’ (you order plural you).

Now, this same ‘one-off’ sort of variation occurs with some or our ‘i to e’ root changing verbs. By far the most common is the verb ‘decir’ (to say, to tell). We hear this used constantly, so it’s one we need to understand properly. This is how it goes: Now, quite a few articles ago I mentioned the fact that there are some verbs in all of these categories and groups, both standard and root-changing, which ‘do their own thing’ in the first person singular. We looked at one or two examples like ‘hacer’ (to do) ... ‘hago’ (I do) and ‘salir’ (to go out) ... ‘salgo’ (I go out). Another very familiar example is ‘tener.’ This is an ‘e to ie’ root-chang-

As you can see, we are looking at a straightforward ‘e to i’ root-changing -ir verb, with a variant first person singular. To be perfectly frank, if you managed to read and understand that last statement without batting an eyelid, take it from me, you’re getting somewhere! See you next week.

UNLIKE gold, ‘time’ is a depreciating asset. The earlier we invest in time, the more valuable it is, each day its value decreases until it becomes of no use to us, we all eventually ‘run out of time.’ Of course we cannot really compare time to a tangible asset but the concept of doing so is an interesting one. The most valuable gift we can give is our time, as we’ll never get it back. Those who are fortunate enough to find themselves with plenty of time will appreciate the wonders it can offer, allowing them to choose how to make good use of it, or sadly in many cases, not appreciate its value at all. A colleague of mine once said to me that he was not looking forward to his family holiday because he was dreading

having to return to work. He was denying himself the joyful happy moments that were approaching, his thoughts were too far in the future and of a negative nature. There is so much emphasis on time and most of us feel we do not have enough of it. Time seems to fly by when we’re enjoying life and slows down when we’re not, there is also the perception that when we were young life seemed so slow and as we age time passes by so much quicker. The way to really embrace and maximise time is to appreciate the present moment. Many of us are either dwelling on the past or worrying about the future which really is just a ‘waste of time.’ Our sense of self is then defined and we are never living in the present moment which is all we have. If we are constantly looking to the future and treating the now as a means to an end, we can never truly appreciate life. If the journey to achieve a goal in life is fraught with difficulties for you and others around you, the perception that a future event will bring us happiness is just that. Most of our thoughts are the same we

anger or resentment, or forward in fear or worry. The only thing we have is the now. If we ask ourselves, where are we? what time is it? The answer will always be, we are here. It is now. We can be sure of our past but not our future so the phrase ‘there’s no time like the present’ has profound meaning. It is called present for a reason, it is a gift, be grateful and embrace it.

WE were talking the other day about where we were and what we remember doing when certain historic events occurred, and the classic opener was: ‘What were you doing when you heard about the assassination of JFK in Dallas?’ This was in 1963 of course and my group of friends recounted their memories from that time as I remained silent. ‘What about you?’ one of them asked me after they had exhausted their stories. “Let’s put it this way,” I said, “I would have been in the park with my girlfriend at about the time it happened, and when we arrived back at her house we heard the news on TV, so I do not intend going into the details of what I was doing at the exact moment, as it’s a very personal matter.” ... And we moved on. Another massive event that is etched in everybody’s minds is 9/11 and the World Trade Centre terror attack in New York. We all had tales to tell about that awful day and how we had watched the drama unfold on television, and could not make

But apart from the world-changing events that everyone can relate to, each of us will also have personal memories of episodes that, whilst inconsequential to others, may have marked specific periods in our lives and can always be recalled in graphic detail. Like the first time I saw Elton John on the Saturday night BBC TV show In Concert in 1970. It knocked my socks off, and the first thing I did on Monday morning was to go out and buy his first album. We related a few personal memories along those lines, then because of the recent football World Cup tournament in Russia, I was asked what I had been doing when England won the trophy in 1966. We all looked at the questioner with mouths open. “Umm let me see,” I said, as I pretended to ponder the question. “Oh I know ... I was watching the World Cup final on telly you dweeb!” And we all fell about laughing. It was one of those Trigger/Del Boy moments.

WHILST many think that the use of the donkeys of Mijas as taxis has been going on for hundreds of years, this is far from the case. In actual fact, local residents in Mijas Pueblo used to ride donkeys to and from the fields to work and as tourism increased, so visitors in the 1960’s asked to have photographs taken with them. This grew into a business but it’s not a piece of Spanish history and there is no doubt that the donkeys don’t appear to be that well looked after. The Triple A charity which is based above Marbella has been determined for many years to do everything it can to make sure that no dog (or cat) that it can help will be allowed to suffer. Nowadays, it has two types of resident in its large compound, those who are fit and ready for adoption and those who have a forever home until they pass away. Age Concern Fuengirola y Mijas THIS very worthy and helpful charity has to some extent become a victim of its own success and is appealing for help from the community. Their charity shop in C/Francisco Cano, Los Boliches, is known for selling quality items at low prices and the high demand for their goods and services means they are running out of summer merchandise. In addition, the shop volunteers are also being kept very busy and could do with some more help. They are therefore asking residents to help them obtain more stock of good quality summer clothing, so please look in your drawers and wardrobes They also need more volunteers to help in the

shop which means just a few hours one morning a week, it’s guaranteed to be fun and is a way to make new friends with a team of super people. You can offer your services by visiting the shop any weekday between 10.30am and 2pm. They also need drivers with their own car and it is a really rewarding job taking clients to their hospital or doctor’s appointments. Again, it’s just a few hours a week and no language skills required but all of these roles make a real difference in helping the charity to help others. As a charity they will soon be celebrating their fourth year whilst the shop recently passed its first birthday milestone. Age Concern also has an opportunity for some-

one to take on the role of volunteer Care Equipment Manager and the job does require a degree of flexibility to meet clients’ needs. Here is a chance to make a real difference to the lives of their less mobile clients and no experience is necessary as full training will be provided. THERE is no question that Ricky Lavazza - the singer with a large following along the Costa del Sol - is going to provide an evening of real entertainment when he pays his annual tribute to Elvis. He says that he has been a fan of the King for as long as he can remember and entered the GMTV Nationwide Search for Elvis competition whilst still an amateur as long ago as 1991, reaching the final 10 times before the title went to a full-time tribute artist and he decided to turn professional. With wife Joanne, he travelled to Graceland on the 35th anniversary of the death of Elvis, has performed at the invitation of the UK Fan Club in Memphis and is a regular star-turn at the annual Elvis week in Benidorm. www.thelittlegeranium.com DELICATE and delicious, salmon has long been a staple fish in cuisines around the world. A favourite dish of Margaret Thatcher and Dame Barbara Cartland who were both clients of mine at my Pink Geranium in the 80’s and early 90’s. Barbara always wore pink in my restaurant and often ordered salmon. As an ingredient salmon offers great versatility, served raw as sashimi or a tartare, smoked freshly, cured

with a multiplicity of ingredients, gently poached, roasted or fried - there are a whole lot of preparations for this fish, with chefs creating new recipes all the time. I am not really sure why salmon is so expensive in Spain. It is more than twice the price of sea bass. Even more expensive is wild salmon which is available from June until the end of September, but you can get Alaskan wild salmon until the end of October. It is not easy to get wild salmon in Spain maybe because it’s so expensive there is little demand? Until recently at The Little Geranium we only sold a small amount of salmon but then I met Edward, a client of mine. Edward is director of a company called Salma in Norway who started supplying me fantastic salmon. Salma is one of Norway’s largest producers of Atlantic salmon. It has earned an enviable reputation for producing high quality salmon. Since dealing with Norway, I am now buying the organic salmon which is delicious. So what is organic salmon? Some of the main criteria for organic

Organic salmon, teriyaki glaze, tempura mussels & bok choy Ingredients (serves 2) 2 x Organic/ Norwegian salmon fillets weighing approx. 150g each (skin on) I head of bok choy or choi sum 2 teaspoons sesame oil Approx. 12 large cooked mussels Tempura batter (see recipe below) 1 sprig of rosemary 50g of unsalted butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 garlic clove peeled and sliced

Teriyaki Sauce ingredients • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 1 tablespoon water • 1 tablespoon cornflour • 3 tablespoons honey to taste • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar to taste • 2 tablespoons orange juice • 1 clove garlic minced ( chopped finely) • 1 teaspoon grated ginger • Juice of ½ lemon

Method • In a small bowl whisk soy sauce, water, and cornflour together until smooth. Add the additional ingredients you are using (vinegar, garlic, ginger, etc.) • Heat over medium-high heat until warm and then whisk in honey until dissolved.

salmon are: • The pen has to be a certain size so that the fish can swim more naturally unlike farmed salmon. • The organic salmon is fed with maritime feed, made from off cuts from fish - it’s an absolute demand that the fish used in the feed derives from sustainable fisheries • The pigmentation used is Panaferd which is a natural colourant. This gives the salmon the same natural colour as wild salmon. • The nets are not treated with anti-fouling which contains copper. This will have less impact on the environment. • If fish have to be treated by medications, the period is twice as long as conventional salmon.

I really want to show it off so the first thing I must do is convince people to order it slightly pink. By keeping it pink we mean slightly undercooked. I leave the skin on and cook it really crispy skin down in a hot pan but I don’t turn the salmon over. Once the skin is crispy I turn the heat down and cook it really slowly, this way the heat slowly penetrates through the fish without drying it out and then at the very last minute flip the salmon over and serve immediately. Crispy skin, moist soft fish, now all it needs is a great sauce and you will have the most amazing meal and it’s easy to prepare. I am leaning into oriental flavours here to bring out some interesting and exciting flavours which enhance but don’t overpower the salmon. It’s important not to overpower it with too much of the sauce, but go for it, this is a stunning dish.

Organic salmon is a superior product and if you can buy organic it not only has a fresher, cleaner more distinctive flavour but a much more humane approach to the fish and more environmentally friendly.

The taste of wild salmon is exceptional.

• Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and whisk constantly until desired thickness is reached. Do not leave unattended it thickens quickly once it gets boiling and will rapidly burn. • Taste and adjust as desired. If too thick, thin with additional water to desired consistency if too thin add some more honey and a little more cornflour. • Add the lemon juice and taste

Tempura Batter • 200g of Tempura Flour (from most supermarkets) • 200cl of iced cold sparkling water • A little Maldon salt • A few cubes of ice • A table spoon of olive oil • Oil (sunflower or corn for frying) corn

How to make the Tempura batter Use the pre-mix tempura flour and add the ice cold sparkling water and some ice cubes and seasoning and the olive oil Mix together lightly with a spoon and do not whisk Important: Lumps in the flour is good. Do not mix it too much as you will get a lot of gluten which makes it heavy and creates an uncrispy tempura batter.

How to cook the Bok Choy/ Choi sum Simply blanch in boiling seasoned water for one minute and then remove with a slotted spoon and pan fry in a little butter and add the sesame oil and season and taste. Serve

How to cook the mussels Take the cooked mussels and toss in plain flour and then drop into your prepared tempura batter. Fry in a fryer at full power 200c or in a wok with vegetable oil. Drain the mussels on tissue paper and season.

How to cook the salmon Firstly make sure that the salmon fillets are free from any bones. Leave the skin on but ensure that it has been cleaned and scaled. Heat up a little oil in a pan and seal the salmon skin side down on a high heat. Now add the butter, rosemary and garlic to the pan. Turn down the heat and do not move or try and lift the salmon. Allow it to cook on the low heat skin side down for at least 10 minutes until the juices in the pan have evaporated. The fish won’t be cooked through but the heat will start to penetrate through. Now prepare the teriyaki sauce and the mussel’s tempura and the bok choy. When these are all ready then finally turn the salmon over and leave for one minute and then serve. The salmon should be nice and soft (pink) and then plate the dish with the bok choy, the crispy fried mussels and finally pour a little sauce on but not too much and serve this delicious dish that will be a taste sensation. Serve this and you will always be remembered as the king or queen of salmon!

Time Out Freestyle returns to Marbella THE Freestyle Motocross show returns to Marbella this year. The show, organised by Malaga Motor Club, will incorporate highly skilled drivers who perform tricks and dangerous stunts to the delight of the crowds. Four times world freestyle motocross champion Maikel Melero and Edgar Torronteras, a living legend and pioneer of this extreme motorcycling will be the main riders performing. After massing crowds attended in previous years, the larger Municipal stadium has been chosen to host the event this year. The bullring is no longer suitable for a spectacle of this criteria. The Sports Councillor, Javier Mérida, has clarified through social media that the show will only occupy the trackside area of the stadium not the football ground, which is currently being used for preseason training by its resident team Marbella FC. “It’s not on the grass, the grass is not touched, it will be covered, only the athletic track is used for this event, it’s not a race, it’s jumps, a freestyle,” he said in his Twitter account. The event will take place on Saturday August 4, starting at 10pm. Tickets will be available on the door or through the town hall.

Good Antonio Naranjo football memorial Companions

THIS year’s charity football match to mark the second memorial of Antonio Naranjo will be held at the Municipal Stadium in San Pedro de Alcantara on August 8. Marbella FC will play a friendly match against UD San Pedro to mark the death of the former honorary president of the club and chronicler of local football. All the money raised from the event will go to the Cudeca Foundation. The new president of the football club UD San Pedro, Óscar Escobar, said that, “when last year we celebrated the first edition we already announced that our idea was to continue with

this recognition to a person who gave so much for local football and, especially, for UD San Pedro.” He added, “If today the UD San Pedro continues to exist it is largely thanks to Antonio Naranjo, so the least we can do is to organise this

event, which we hope will continue to be celebrated for many years.” Antonio who died on July 6, 2017, after losing his battle with cancer had dedicated his whole life to local football and the San Pedro club. Tickets will be on sale for €2.

THE Good Companions Social Club, is affiliated to Cudeca (the Cancer and Hospice charity foundation) and are totally non-profit making.
