This ban, which is in accordance with the relevant laws concerning the prevention and fight against forest fires will be in place until October 15 and as it gets hotter, so the risk of fire gets higher. This is particularly noticeable this year, as the large volume of rainfall means that the forests have grown even more densely than usual and the council is appealing to residents and visitors to be particularly responsible during the summer. Palace wall comes down WORKERS from Marbella Council have demolished the wall around the Palacio Marbella del Mar, linked to the Saudi royal family. The wall had been at risk of collapse for over two years and the council has confirmed that it will begin the construction of a new wall upon receipt of payment from the palaceâ€™s owners. Previously, the town hall has had to fortify the wall and close a public footpath to the beach, as a safety measure.

Instead, a former IMF official Carlo Cottarelli who is known to be close to Brussels and in favour of austerity, has been appointed interim Prime Minister which means that there is bound to be another election. The right dislike the snub which has seen ‘Mr Scissors’ as he is nicknamed in Italy - taking on the role of PM and they in turn are calling for the impeachment of President Sergio Mattarella, although with 64 governments since the war, Italy is no stranger to political chaos. So that is one of the so-called European PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) adding to the economic problem and it has been joined by Spain. The right of centre Partido Popular (PP) under Mariano Rajoy is another minority government which currently relies on the support of the new antiCatalan independence party Ciudadanos plus a few independents to rule.

THE last week has thrown up a number of economic fears which are brought about because of political instability in some of the most important members of the European Union. Italy and Spain sit at number three, four in the list of Eurozone countries with economies that are only exceeded by Germany and France, but both are suddenly in turmoil. Although it has a history of coalition governments, the latest Italian problem is seriously affecting the economy with the value of bonds dropping and in actual fact it is even hurting the value of the euro against other currencies. It looked as if Italy was to be run by a coalition of the right with quite clear anti-immigration and Eurosceptic views, but when the President - who fulfils a mainly ceremonial role - refused to approve the appointment of Prof Paolo Savona, an 81-year-old economist who had

Rajoy and Sanchez – the gloves are off. It has not been any secret that a number of former PP members at national and local level have been involved in corrupt practices, but the results of the recent Gürtel case which saw senior PP officials jailed for decades has spurred the opposition parties to demand that Mariano Rajoy should resign.

Understandably, he denies any knowledge of any wrong-doing and there appears to be no evidence of his involvement, although as leader of a party which has been littered with ‘troughiteers,’ it is argued that he should actually have had some idea of what was going on.

Due to the fact that the PP appear to have benefited financially from the corruption (albeit possibly unwittingly), the leader of the socialist PSOE Pedro Sanchez has called for a vote of no confidence in Mariano Rajoy. Almost immediately, the leader of the third party in Spanish politics Pablo Iglesias of Podemos (who has just survived his own vote of no-confidence, called by him over his purchase of a €600,000 property) confirmed that his party would vote against Mr Rajoy. Between the two parties, they control 156 votes in parliament out of 350, but they need a majority in order to see a new election and this will realistically only occur if they can persuade Ciudadanos to vote with them and that is highly unlikely. So although it looks as if there will be no change of government, the political uncertainty in Spain has also affected the stock exchange adversely and added to the general economic uncertainty about the euro and the eurozone.

by Tom Woods PLANS are being drawn up by Mijas Council to establish a new public library in a building which was part of the former Guardia Civil headquarters. The project is being promoted by the library department after a recent campaign from residents and local organisations collected close to 500 signatures in a petition to renovate public buildings. Councillor Hipolito Zapico said: “We have carried out a study to evaluate the needs of our libraries. It considered new resources, as well as the sort of spaces that current library users would find most preferable.” One of the strongest public demands is for the library in Mijas Pueblo to be reconstructed or moved to a different location. Rosa Maria Badillo, leader of a local association that encourages reading among young children, said: “It will be marvellous to be

This important new space will cater to all ages and help to modernise the library system.” A multi-use room is expected to be created in the new library that will cater for meetings and activities, as well as having capacity for over 30 desks. near the town hall, the San Sebastian school, and the health centre. The contract for the renovation of the building has been put out to tender with a projected cost of €11,500. No timescale has been confirmed but air conditioning, lighting, security, accessibility and acoustics will all be carefully planned in the project.

MARBELLA Council is to invest €300,000 to renovate the Plaza de Toros bullring in Marbella. The arena has been closed for months, unable to host any cultural events due to its lack of compliance with regulations. However, the town hall has decided to take action using funds from its sustainable investment plan, and the works will be undertaken in phases. Along with reconstruction work to repair damage, painting, cleaning, signage and new fire safety measures will be introduced all with the support of the main local opposition PSOE under José Bernal. The Marbella bullring was opened in 1964 and holds 9,500 spectators.

THE mayor of Fuengirola, Ana Mula, has provided an update on the ongoing project to build a new link road from Carvajal to Torreblanca. Work on the complicated section, which has to run under the railway line, started in February and is expected to be completed next April.

Town honours miraculous escape A COMMEMOR AT ION of the 35th anniversar y of the collapse of the old church of Guadiaro has taken place in San Roque. T he ceremony on Tuesday began with a mass and followed with a procession of the statue of the Virgen de los Dolores. T he festivities were org a n i s e d b y t h e Pa ro c h i a l Association of Our Lady of Sorrows and was attended by hundre ds of locals , as well as children having their first communion. Accompanying the pro-

cession was the ‘Amando Her rera’ brass band, and the parish priest gave thanks to God for what locals believe was a miracle that no one was injured or killed on the day of the collapse. On May 29, 1983, the church was full of people including 52 children, who l e f t m o m e n t s b e fo re t h e building sank into a r ubble. T he church has since been rebuilt and is at the hear t of the Guadiaro community.

Raising funds to battle AIDS LAST Tuesday the Choir and Orchestra of Collegium Musicum Costa del Sol together with the Camerata Singers of Sotogrande, performed their annual concert to raise funds for the AIDS charity Concordia. The concert featured the music of composers of the first Viennese School and under the direction of Annemarie Philipps the programme included a Requiem by Salieri, a Te Deum by Michael Haydn, a work for Oboe (featuring Nicholas Harcourt-Smith) and Orchestra by Hummel and works by Leopold Mozart and his more famous son, Wolfgang.

A very large audience filled the Church of the Encarnación in Marbella Old Town and although entrance to the concert was free, Princes Marie Louise of Prussia, president of the charity spoke before the concert, explaining the aims of the charity, the obstacles faced and the fact that without donations, the charity could not continue. MAYOR of Marbella, Angeles Muñoz, joined in the World Day of Multiple Sclerosis (May 30) and pledged to promote research into the disease. She emphasised that the town has staff and a department dedicated to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis, and praised the hard work and commitment of the Multiple Sclerosis Association. The council is determined to improve access to

comprehensive rehabilitation treatment which would be individually tailored and free. Employers are also being encouraged to comply with the law which requires at least 2 per cent of the workforce to be those with disabilities. Multiple Sclerosis is a neurodegenerative and chronic disease of the central nervous system that affects more than 47,000 people in Spain.

Rambling raises funds EARLIER this month, Rambling with Al’s third annual fundraising sponsored walk took place. There was a slight change of format this year as there were two different routes, one of almost 19 kilometres and a fivekilometre route. In total over €3,050 was raised for four charities - CUDECA Hospice, SOS Animals, AID (Animals in Distress), and ARCH (Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses). As the walkers stopped to enjoy a picnic, they were encouraged to enter a raffle. The first of the prizes was a delicious carrot cake that was made by one of the group’s walkers, known as ‘John the Cake’ who also deserves a special mention for his magnificent achievement of raising a total of €1,480 in sponsorship and the raffle. Also a special mention to the youngest walker, eight-yearold Emilio, who raised €107 all on his own.

Town flies the flag for gay pride

FULL SUPPORT: Political parties came together to back Gay Pride.

TORREMOLINOS Council has displayed the LGBTI flag on its balcony as politicians from all parties gathered on Monday to celebrate the start of the Gay Pride 2018 programme. Councillor for Equality, Aida Blaines said: “It is always special to display the Gay Pride flag on our balcony here at the town hall, as a visible commitment to the fight for respect, equality and the rights of all people. “It is one more example of the openness and freedom that Torremolinos now enjoys.” The Gay Pride festivities kicked off yesterday (Thursday) in the Plaza de La Nogalera with several live musical performances. There was also a marquee for Sexual Health run by the charity Positive Support, and a conference of actors, writers and directors.

Five beaches get shifting sands ESTEPONA has begun the regeneration of five of its beaches that had suffered damage in the storms of the winter. Punta Pinillos, El Angel, El Padron, Benamara and Casasola will benefit from the restoration work in time for peak season. La Escollera beach will donate 80,000 cubic metres of its sand for the project, which is being carried out by the Coastal Demarcation. The council also plans other improvement works to Estepona’s coastline, including steps, footpaths and toilets. Councillor for Beaches, Susana Aragon, also confirmed that two boats will be assigned to keep with coastal water clean. “A tourist town like Estepona cannot afford to keep the maintenance of its beaches on the backburner,” said Ms Aragon. “We are strongly committed to improving the coastline so that it presents its best face for the large tourist influx in the coming days.” Estepona has been awarded four blue f lags this year for the quality for its beaches and services.

by Tom Woods BENALMADENA Council is forging ahead with plans to introduce tighter conditions for tourist boat operators in the marina. The proposed changes have not been popular with the 17 boat companies that are in line to be affected, and they had called for the whole process to be suspended on the grounds that it was ‘abusive.’ Following permission from the Andalucian port authority, APPA, the council has put the contracts for excursions out to tender. Boat companies will be required to pay 50 cents per passenger, plus 50 per cent more in berthing fees, an amount that will notably reduce their profit margins. For its part, the council says that the operators have been paying no fee for years and that the law requires a regularisation of conditions. The companies claim that the changes will endanger their business and put dozens of jobs at risk.

Festival to fetch funds for cancer A SOLIDARITY festival will take place in Estepona on Saturday to raise money for children with cancer. Mayor Jose Maria Garcia Urbano was joined by the president of the Volunteers’ Association of Children’s Oncology, Juan Carmona, to present the event which will be held in the Parque del Calvario. There will be music, live performances, children’s entertainment, and plenty of food and drink to enjoy. Mayor Garcia Urbano encouraged locals to participate in an initiative that aims to raise funds for the oncology department of the Maternal and Child Hospital, and for bone marrow transplants. He also praised the work of the Volunteers’ Association of Children’s Oncology, which has been running since 1993 and has 180 volunteers. Its president, Juan Carmona, thanked the council for its support and looked forward to the “exciting” festival.

Council presents tourism strategy MIJAS Council has presented its Strategic Plan for Tourism, which includes a series of actions over the next four years. Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado said: “We are talking about an essential document which will detail the steps we are going to take in the coming years, recognising that tourism is our economic engine and is a key employment generator. “ We w a n t t o b r e a k t h e s e a s o n a l i t y o f tourism so that we can provide jobs with more continuity and promote the town all year round.” The Strategic Plan has been drawn up with the help of researchers from the Tourism Faculty of the University of Malaga. The researches incorporated data from a range of sources, including tourism businesses, social organisations, and council officials. Councillor for Tourism, Josele Gonzalez, said that growth “will only be possible through the promotion of specific actions in the short, medium and long term, whose objective is to continue making Mijas a reference destination within the Costa del Sol.” Financing, sustainability, the use of resources and collaboration with other areas are all addressed in the document. Nature, sport and gastronomy all also three key elements of Mijas’ tourism agenda.

BECAUSE I was exceptionally fastidious as a kid, avoiding all forms of rough-and-tumble that might leave dirt marks on my clothes or skin, I reacted with outrage when my parents announced they were taking me to a primary school fancy dress event dressed as a chimney sweep. Despite the colossal tantrum I threw when I was told that this would mean donning rags and having my face and hands smeared with soot, mum and dad persisted and off I was dragged to a ghastly prepubescent gathering of mini witches and fairies and werewolves and pirates and the like. Prizes were handed out for the best costumes, and, to my disgust, I was awarded one. I had to get up on stage to receive an Enid Blyton book. This exposure doubly compounded my intense discomfit at appearing in public with a smutty face and filthy clothes. I sulked for a week and trashed my prize. I HATED Enid Blyton books. The perils of fancy dress pressured me into accompanying them to a ‘vice versa’ party. Men were to wear women’s clothes, and the women were to come as men. I reluctantly agreed. I was given a mini-skirt and a wig by my friend Derek, but had to filch frilly underwear, stockings, shoes with stiletto heels and a bra from my mother’s wardrobe. Of course I didn’t tell my parents about the party. But they found out anyway because I was dragged home drunk as a skunk at 3am by the local police, who found me staggering around town, wearing a large ornate lampshade for a hat, and belting out ‘I feel pretty, and witty and gay’ in a voice that would have given a macaw a migraine. My outraged father implored the plods not to charge his pervy son for being drunk in charge of a mini-skirt and lampshade, and promised them he’d ground me for 10 years. I vowed after that never again to dress up fancy, but my resolve crumbled when Benidorm staged its 2012 Gay Pride, and 65-yearold me decided to go as a native American. I certainly had the colour for it, having soaked up sunshine for weeks prior to the parade.

BARRY: Discovering the fun and pitfalls of fancy dress. Because I loved the attention I got, I then pulled out all the stops to become a zombie for Halloween. I created the effect of rotting flesh by gluing thin slices of chorizo to my head, face and chest. Some folk were genuinely horrified and I was as pleased as punch. I now know that, while being a zombie is perfectly acceptable

(except to religious nutters who condemn Halloween as ‘satanic’), dressing up as a native American is ‘incredibly offensive,’ according to a US website called Scary Mommy, which said ‘basically, when you dress up as an Indian, you’re dressing up as a stereotype of an entire continent of people. You wouldn’t dress up as an Australian or as an African.

Another US website advised people not dress up as Mexicans for the annual Cinco de Mayo holiday, which celebrates the victory of the Mexican army over French forces in the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It said if one wears a sombrero, or a stick-on moustache, or brandishes maracas, this is called ‘cultural appropriation’ and is to be avoided at all costs. You can’t even dress up in religiously-themed costumes without having ‘cultural appropriation’ thrown in your face. This happened when the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art recently made Catholic apparel the theme of an exhibition called ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.’ A great many Catholics were appalled at the sight of pop idol, Rihanna dressed as a pope. Me? I thought she looked absolutely fabulous, and, given that the exhibition had the full support of the Vatican, I think those who shrieked ‘blasphemy’ were being hypersensitive jerks. The world has many serious problems that need urgent attention. What people wear at fancy dress events most certainly isn’t one of them.

FUENGIROLA Council has delivered on its support of the Association of Celiacs of Malaga by confirming three new additions to the ‘Fuengirola without gluten’ restaurant network. National Celiac Day was celebrated on May 27 but the council has emphasised that it is committed to achieving greater food welfare and safety for people with the condition throughout the year. Councillor for Social Services, Francisco Jose Martin, announced the news alongside the Councillor for Health, Ricardo von Wichmann. Fresh food specialists Pasapalo, gourmet ice cream retailer Heladerias Moka, and Lola’s Gluten Free bakery have all been confirmed as gluten friendly establishments. Through its agreement with the Association of Celiacs of Malaga, signed in March 2015, the council plans to encourage more and more restaurants to offer gluten free cuisine. THE Juan Luis Galiardo Theatre hosted an evening of entertainment on Wednesday from students who have been learning performing arts including Latino, Cuban and Ballroom dancing. This year a total of 2,250 students have taken part in a total of 36 workshops, of which eight are performing arts related, and 36 are based on arts and crafts. Other performances in the show included flamenco dancing and guitar, and a play. Some of the skills taught in the arts and crafts workshops include: embroidery; dressmaking; ceramics; digital photography; oil painting and traditional cuisine.

COLLABORATION between the National Police and the Spanish Tax Agency has led to the uncovering of a suspected €7 million fraud and a number of arrests. In an operation carried out in several provinces, including Valencia and Alicante, 28 people - mainly of Chinese origin - are believed to be behind selling electric goods from China. These include mobile phones and accessories and lighting products. According to reports in the Spanish media, police sources suggest that the group have been operating since 2013. The investigation began during the middle of last year thanks to a complaint filed in the Central Unit of Economic and Fiscal Crime. Town to celebrate sailors and sardines

Trip to supermarket cost new arrival €3,700

FUENGIROLA will pay homage to its sea-faring history with a themed festival in the Virgen del Carmen district. The event which is in its fourth year, will celebrate the sailor way of life and will feature an exhibition in the art of sardine spitting and tasting. As a town of marine origins, it is important that Fuengirola holds on to the customs and traditions that have been passed down the generations. As a result, the council is holding the festival this Saturday from 1.00pm, in the Plaza de Los Marineros. Councillor for Public Participation, Isabel Moreno, has overseen the preparations which will include sardine tasting, soft drinks and a brass band. “Every year in good weather and when the sardines are at their juiciest, we have a sea festival,” said Councillor Moreno. “Almost 200 hundred kilos of sardines are produced through the excellent volunteer work of the Fishermen’s Association. “Experts in sardine spitting will showcase it for us, and everyone is welcome to taste our delicious sardines.”

A RECENT arrival from South Africa who is looking to purchase a property in Spain, Wayne Bromley visited a supermarket in Calahonda and lost €3,700 when his bag was ransacked. Coming from a country that does suffer from theft, he is not naïve but didn’t expect to have this happen to him so quickly and apparently easily. He was walking around the supermarket when he was stopped by a man who initially spoke in Spanish and then Italian asking if he could help him by getting down some pizzas from the top shelf as he was too short. First he wanted one pizza, then three, then two and taking those he walked away. When Wayne got to the counter to pay for his shopping, his wallet containing €1,500 in cash had been removed from his bag and his credit cards had disappeared and in the time it took for him to report they were missing, a further €2,200 had been spent. Happily for him, his South African Bank had declined a charge against his debit card. He immediately reported the theft to the Local Police and suggested that he would be able to identify the suspect from CCTV footage but the supermarket said that it did not have access to the cameras which were owned by the shopping centre. Wayne observed that it would have been much easier to try to resolve the situation in South Africa but will be much less trusting if approached by strangers asking for help in the future.

La Cala de Mijas Lions donate to village venture in Africa ACCORDING to the La Cala de Mijas Lions, a hear tfelt vote of thanks must go to a lady, Pam Young , who sing le-handedly devotes most of her time trying to improve the daily life of an African community in Diema. Diema, is in Kayes, Mali. It is truly international, being made up of over 150 towns and villages comprising of many different tribes, and lies on the borders of three different countries, namely Mali, Mauritania and Senegal. I t also has a link to Guinea on its south side. As in many places in this northern central part of Africa the people are in need of h e l p f ro m t h o s e a b l e t o p ro v i d e a n d l i k e many other African communities their main priorities are to improve many of their life essentials. It is a poor area, and basics such as good drinking water, health and schools are high on this list of needed improvements. To this end, Pam Young has been presented with €1,000 by La Cala Lions which will enable the local people of Diema to purchase a

machine for recycling, and at the same time earn the villagers money. Pam travels to this remote area of Africa on her own from the UK on a regular basis to help these people as much as possible. The La Cala Lions have been helping her in this venture on a regular basis for some time. Pupils get a fruity education THE Mayor of Manilva, Mario Jimenez, and the Education Councillor, Diego Urieta, have visited the Maicandil school to participate in Fruit Day. More than 600 pupils in the town have been involved in the initiative which will be held across all schools in the area. The concept is to make young people aware of the benefits of healthy habits, primarily in relation to food. A variety of fruit will be on show at the schools, eg apples, pears, melons, watermelons and strawberries.

Yoga event gives Cudeca a healthy boost OVER 100 people of all ages gathered at the Arroyo de la Miel’s Municipal Sports Centre for the Yoga Solidario charity event, raising €600 for CUDECA Hospice. Mijas donkeys I absolutely agree with your article ‘Donkey abuse claims’ in Mijas Pueblo. Everything stated is true and the donke ys are tied by ver y shor t ropes to metal poles for hours unable to move and very distressed. Some are definitely in a lot of pain with spinal damage. Ho w e v e r n o o n e e v e r m e n tions the horses who are treated just as bad and suffer unnecessarily. T hey have to pull car r iages with sometimes six people in. T h e y a re fo rc e d to f a s t t ro t t h ro u g h t h e v i l l a g e fo a m i n g from the mouth. They often slip and sometimes fall on the slipper y cob-

I think the donkeys and horses should be taken to rest during the hours of 1pm and 3pm as it is too hot for them to work at this time. Many tourists are unhappy to see these animals treated so badly, it certainly is n’t a good advert for the village. San Bernabe Fair starts next week

COMING SOON: Announcing the dance events at the fair. THE Marbella San Bernabe Fair will commence this year on Tuesday and run until the following Monday. The night fair will be run as usual adjacent to La Cañada, but the council has undertaken certain changes in order to lessen the impact on local residents and the Children’s Day which takes place at 7pm on Wednesday will see discounts on the cost of rides. The opening ceremony and coronation of the Queens and Ladies will

take place at 10pm on Tuesday in the Puerto Deportivo followed by fireworks at the El Faro Beach. An interview with Genevieve Yusuf books, I decided to apply this theory and add Spanish or French into context so that children can guess the word. This makes learning a fun game and which is why I called my company JaJaJa - ha ha ha in English! I just love languages, and really enjoy being able to communicate when I am somewhere new. I aim to learn Italian and Japanese when I turn 40 this year!

3. JAJAJA recently won an award, what major thing do you think contributed to the win? People talk about USPs as if it’s just part of marketing spiel but I really do have a unique selling point. I seem to have cornered a part of the market and I think it’s appreciated that I now want to give something back through the means of a donation. Some people get tired of asking to donate but for me, if someone is paying for a book and at the same time helping a charity, it’s a win, win situation!

That is why a fun story is a good way to introduce another language. JAJAJA Books are winners of the #WOW award from the original Dragons’ Den judge, Theo Paphitis 1. Genevieve how did you start your business journey? I had lived in Spain on and off from the age of 17 and each time I returned to the UK, I noticed that many spoke of the bad experiences they had had with learning languages and also how lots of children weren’t learning a new language. I wanted to create fun stories that incorporated a foreign language element, so that children could learn without realising in a context driven way. My best friend is a graphic designer and took me through the process of book design. We eventually created our first book Lucy and Lucia Play Hide and Seek! Fast forward to 2018 - six books later and with lots of reviews and awards under our belt, we are now producing lots of books through Createspace (my new self-publishing help guide that will launch this year, will explain why we have gone down this route). Some of our new publications this year will be Sam and the Spider and The Resident Pheasant. 2. You have merged your two passions Linguistics and Spanish - tell us more! Yes, I studied Linguistics with Spanish at Sussex University and as part of that course, we covered bilingualism in children and child language acquisition, which fascinated me. We were also taught, in a foreign language exam, if you are struggling to understand a word, look at the words around it and try and guess that word in its context. When I had the idea of writing bilingual

4. There are so many apps now for people to translate text, what would your advice be for people needing translations for their businesses? Personally, I don’t use any but I do think many like Babel are great, however there’s a lot to be said about using professional companies. These people have worked tirelessly to be good at what they do and some apps or programs can be very unreliable in their translation, you can end up with some very inappropriate statements or vocabulary without realising!! 5. One thing you will achieve for 2018? Release my new book Sam and the Spider with the Multi-School’s Council which aims to break down perceptions of children with special education needs. This is part of our bespoke book service to help charities and businesses. 6. I am waving my ‘make it happen’ wand giving you one wish for your business, what are you daydreaming about? Our book Ranvir Cannot Hear is a beautiful story of inclusion and it’s about not concentrating on what you cannot do, but focussing on what you can. www.thelittlegeranium.com THIS week I am getting the barbecue out for the first time this year as the weather has been a little too cool especially at night and often windy in the days, but I can’t wait any longer. I spoke with my butcher and pre-ordered some Tomahawk steaks. The Tomahawk steak is an on trend cut of ribeye with about eight inches of bone handle, the ultimate lollipop!

It is usually two inches thick and weighs in at about one kilo or just over. It’s not like cooking a piece of entrecote on the barbecue as this giant steak will need the oven to ensure that it is not raw or cold in the centre. Few people have ever eaten a Tomahawk steak and if you have, you will remember as it really does have the wow factor and the flavour is especially good on this cut of meat. Named because it allegedly resembles the Tomahawk axe, Tomahawk steak is becoming more and more popular and in the UK it is all the rage, especially with the trendy chefs! It isn’t very common on restaurant menus (mainly because of price) but it is on my menu over here in La Cala at a fair price served up for two people and carved at your table. It is popping up in more places for the home

cook too, with Marks and Spencer apparently jumping on the bandwagon but you may struggle to get it over here because let’s be honest it’s difficult to get a wild mushroom over here, but if you show your butcher the picture below he may well be able to supply it as a pre-order. Failing that you have me (your personal chef!) as an option and I will happily email you some suppliers and contacts on request. The Tomahawk steak is an on the bone rib steak, cut from the fore-rib with the entire rib bone left. The long bone is French-trimmed, leaving an amazing presentation, and dinner table discussion point. As it is a bone-in rib steak, it has quite a large amount of muscular fat, which gives it lots of flavour when cooked, as flavours are released from both the huge bone and the fat during roasting to give a sweet

gelatinous flavour. When it is cooked it will need resting for at least 10 minutes to let the juices settle and to ensure that it is not still a bit raw in the centre. When cooked and rested, hold the bone in one hand and cut along the bone lengthways to separate the meat from the bone. Slice the meat across the grain at an angle into slices about ½ cm to 1cm thick and serve. It’s certainly not an everyday steak, but visions of eating like the Flintstones appear when serving it and the guests are always impressed! So the barbecue is ready and the oven is on, all you have to do now is follow my simple step by step instructions to cook it and you will undoubtedly be the most popular friend to have on the Costa del Sol!

The best steak of your life! Tomahawk steak for four people Ingredients for four 2 Tomahawk steaks weighing approx. one kilo each Maldon salt Freshly milled black pepper 1 small bunch of rosemary 4 cloves of garlic peeled, crushed and finely chopped Instructions 1. Heat an outdoor barbecue to the highest heat. Preheat your oven to 200C. 2. Season steaks generously with salt and pepper and rub in the chopped rosemary and garlic all over the top, bottom, and all the sides. Use a generous amount of salt. 3. Sear the steaks for two minutes on each side, letting the flames lick up the sides. You’ll know the steak is ready to flip when it releases easily from the grill. 4. Transfer the steaks to a roasting tray. 5. Roast in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until the steaks reach an internal temperature of 55 celsius. Use a meat thermometer for 100 per cent accuracy. 6. Let them rest for 10 minutes out of the hot tray but reserve the juices 7. After 10 minutes the beef will be rested and softer to the touch than when it came out of the oven. 8. Now you can flash them back on the flaming barbecue for another two minutes each side flipping them regularly 9. Pour the juices from the roasting tray all over the steaks 10. Put on a large wooden board and slice and serve. 11. Serve with Dijon mustard, Maldon salt, crispy fried onions (see below) a rich red wine sauce and garlic butter melting over the top.

Simple Crispy Onions 1. Preheat a deep fat fryer to 190C. 2. 1 large white onion peeled and sliced thinly. 3. 3 tablespoons of seasoned flour (seasoned with salt, pepper and some mixed spices like all spice). 4. Put the onions in a container and cover with milk. 5. Fish the onions out with a slotted spoon and toss through the seasoned flour. 6. Deep fry until golden brown (1 minute approx.). Garlic Butter Ingredients 1. 1 pack of 250g unsalted butter softened at room temperature. 2. 4 garlic cloves peeled and minced. 3. 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley. 4. Salt to taste (if using unsalted butter). 5. 4 tablespoons of olive oil. Instructions 1. Put the minced garlic into a saucepan with the olive oil and gently simmer to cook the garlic lightly, do not colour it. It is only to take the bitterness out of the raw garlic. 2. Add all ingredients into a small serving bowl and mix until combined. 3. Spread some cling film over a work surface and put the butter onto it approx. 3cm thick. 4. Roll up until the butter is even and cylindrical. 5. Refrigerate and slice through cling film to serve but then remove cling film off each slice 6. Serve on top of the steaks before carving.

by Colin Bird The opinions published in Colin’s weekly column are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or newspaper sponsors. ONE of my favourite TV programmes, that’s to say one that is less awful than most of the others, is Grand Designs hosted by designer and writer, Kevin McCloud. It’s never an easy road that the subjects of each programme apparently travel, because without fail, they seem to underestimate the costs of their project and end up having to borrow more money. Who in their right minds would undertake a major refurbishment or new build, often with projected costs running into many hundreds of thousands of pounds, without having their estimates checked and rechecked by qualified people? And if they have indeed been checked then perhaps those professionals should look for work in a less demanding environment. Only inmates of certain institutions would put themselves in situations like

this, but as sure as eggs are eggs, they almost always find themselves having to find an extra hundred grand or two, because either materials have mysteriously escalated in price, or surprise, surprise, they find themselves in the middle of winter and work has come to a standstill. But fair do’s the British weather is

something that very few of us have had experience with. It could happen to anybody. Here’s a suggestion though: start in the early spring and give yourself more time. The other side of the coin is that even with expert advice, some of these char-

acters decide that they know better and plough on regardless, often project managing (whatever that means) their own build. And guess what, they almost always fall flat on their faces. Repeatedly one of the biggest holdups seems to be the manufacture and installation of windows, because they are never your ordinary run of the mill windows, but tinted quadruple glazed; bullet proof; one way; mirrored jobbies. Having waited months for these beauties to arrive, they then often find they won’t fit. Oh darn. Let’s knock a bit of brickwork out. On top of all this chaos and financial uncertainty, many of the couples concerned decide to have another baby. Stuck in a small caravan on-site with the two toddlers they already have, surrounded by a sea of mud and now another kid on the way. Yes I can see the attraction. But amazingly in spite of all this, most of the stories end happily. McCloud always manages to wax lyrical about the finished build, but it must be an effort sometimes. A cross between a poet and an architect, you get the impression that even if the finished house looks like a toilet bowl with balconies, he will find something complimentary to say about it... then go off and laugh himself silly.

With fertility problems, amongst both men and women on the rise, what can be done to help take care of your fertility? In July 1918, their Bolshevik captors herded the doomed family into a basement in Yekaterinburg under the pretext that their photograph was to be taken. The Tsar and Tsarina Alexandra, their daughters, Olga (22), Tatiana (21), Maria (19), Anastasia (17) and Alexei (13) fell under a hail of bullets. The family’s corpses and those of three loyal servants and family doctor were hurled down a mine and later burned. From Kaliningrad to the Bering Straits, a distance about 5,700 miles, the Russian people this year lament their loss. Monuments and museums, art galleries, movies, television documentary and drama, church services, it is hard to forget the tragedy ex-

Over 1,000 Gulag camps were scattered across this bankster’s colony. Roosevelt’s Lend Lease Plan (1941) was inspired by the need to rescue Bolshevik Russia from the Reich. The United States and Britain had investe d h e a v i l y i n S t a l i n ’s b l o o d soaked regime. The fate of the Tsar and his family are fairly well known. However, few have been told

what happened to others making up the then Romanov dynasty (1613 - 1917). The Romanov dynasty was primarily a family made up of the best of Europe’s royal houses. The blood of the martyrs was that of England, Denmark, Greece, Germany, and Romania, Habsburg dynasty, Russia and Serbia (then a powerful state). The martyred Romanovs could lay claim to being the e s s e n c e o f E u r o p e ’s r o y a l houses. Theirs was not so much a Russian as a European dynasty. There were 53 Romanovs l i v i n g i n R u s s i a w h e n Ts a r Nicholas II abdicated on March 15, 1917. Eighteen were slaughtered in the most heartwrenching circumstances; 35 made their way to safety. Imperial Russia’s gold reserves weighed 1,311 tonnes, which is $ 6 0 b i l l i o n a t t o d a y ’s v a l u e . This too went west and not to the workers. 1st - 7th June Basic Spanish for everyday needs

I THINK I left my poor readers in suspense last week, which means you are all now dying to know what happens to the verb OÍR in the present tense. Worse still, some of you might have gone to look it up and been frightened into thinking it is, horror of horrors an ‘irregular verb,’ which in fact is not the case, although it is a little odd. Oír is one of our standard -ir verbs. It has its own ideas about what to do in the first person singular, as is the case with a number of other standard verbs we have already looked at. It also suffers from some adjustments to its spelling, in common with a few other similar verbs. Here is the conjugation in full: Oigo Oímos Oyes Oís Oye Oyen As you will see the letter y comes into play in three of the forms for no apparent reason, but in fact the reasons are good sound linguistic ones linked to ease of pronunciation. To put it simply, ‘oyes’ is a great deal easier to get one’s mouth round than ‘oes.’ Just to digress for a moment, there is a close relationship between the letters ‘i’ and ‘y’ in Spanish and sometimes there is a substitution of one letter for another in various word changes.

Verb oír and standard verb sentences The name of the ‘y’ is ‘igriega’, ‘the Greek i’ (at least it was, they have now changed the name of it but that’s another story) and sometimes the ‘i’ is referred to as the ‘ilatina,’ the Latin i. Going back to the verb ‘oír’ you will notice that in the first and second persons plural, there is an accent placed on the í vowel to distinguish it as a separate beat from the ‘o.’ Somehow I’m not sure I’ve convinced you with any of that explanation, so if that’s the case then I recommend you try out this one which works wonders for some people but not for others, ‘that’s just how it is!’ Obviously, and as ever, there is more to say about standard verbs, but I think the time

is approaching when we need to move forward to look at our second category of verb which is the ‘root-changing’ one. Before we do though, it is a while since you have had any homework, and also I think it would be a good idea to see some of these verbs in action in sentences. So, here are some disconnected phrases for you to translate whilst you admire their verbs at the same time. 1. Mi marido lee el periódico todos los días. 2. Mi hijo sale los sábados por la noche. 3. ¿A qué hora coméis normalmente? 4. Los chicos cocinan cuando están en el campo. 5. No oigo mi móvil.

6. ¿Escribes en español y en inglés? 7. No hago las camas siempre. 8. Aprendo poco a poco. 9. Abrimos la tienda a las 9 de la mañana. 10. ¿Dónde vivís? Answers and explanations will be duly offered next week for your delight and curiosity. See you then!

The popular training camp will take place at the Santo Tomas de Aquino sports centre and the Parque de Los Pedregales in the town from June 24 to July 29. Mr Garcia Urbano said that the initiative has become “a tourist attraction phenomenon” and that it goes “beyond the practice of sports and entertainment by fostering among young people important values like friendship, integration and teamwork.” He also emphasised the cosmopolitan nature of Estepona with its total of 108 nationalities and 30 per cent make up of foreign residents. In addition to its sports programme, the Summer Campus aims to instill in children aged between six and 15 a commitment to a healthy lifestyle based on good nutrition and fitness. The children will also get to enjoy trips to the beach, a water park, volleyball and hiking.

After battling to a 1-1 draw during normal time, the Benalmadena team managed to beat Egara 1935 in a shoot-out which saw the Benalmadena boys take a surprise win over the Catalan team. Although not perhaps the most popular of Spanish team sports, the league was set up in Barcelona in 1922 and both men’s and women’s teams compete in the leagues across the nation.

How the new ITV changes affect Classics by David Hudson DESPITE reports there would be new equipment and paperless checking when the new laws started on May 20 this has already happened during the last three years in parts of Spain. The big change for classic and old vehicles is that the ‘favorable con d e f e c t o s l e v e s ’ w i l l d i s a p p e a r. T h i s gave the ITV station the leniency when it was a borderline decision. For instance if the classic was looked after and the kilometres were low then it would tell the tester that this was an owner that was not reckless and cared for the vehicle. Being low kilometres meant that the vehicle only came out on Sundays and fiestas when the traffic was reduced. Making a safer period of travel also the type of vehicle would be taken into account. A Porsche or MG would be driven faster than a 2CV or 600. This would allow the tester to make a decision in giving the classic another year on the roads. Now this has been taken away you need to fully understand why the ITV said with defects and put it right. To help with the improved emission controls and if the classic has only travelled short distances add UK’s Forte specialist injection cleaner to the petrol and drive approximately 50 kilometres to clean out the system. Change the engine oil, oil and air filters just before the test and replace old plugs and leads. If you wish to have it registered as a historic vehicle to have a lenient test the laws have changed. It must now be 30 years or over and the vehicle must be either the original or the principle components should be the original type of engine, brakes, steering, suspension or bodywork.
