by John Smith THE Third United Nationalities of Marbella Summit organised by TV and radio presenter Nicole King was held at Velvet Marbella last Tuesday. There was an impressive turn out with a number of different expatriates resident or working in the 27kilometre stretch that is Marbella can do to help each other to make the area a better place. Helped by Fiona Catchpowle, Nicole King reported on the success of the ongoing ZeroHero campaign which is now supported by the Road Traffic Safety Foundation Linea Directa whereby various bars and restaurants around the city will not charge ‘designated drivers’ for soft drinks provided that it is clear they have taken no alcohol. Linea Directa will be providing personal breathalyser kits which can be used not only whilst customers are about to go to their cars but can help them check their alcohol level the following day when so many people don’t realise that they may be breaking the Spanish limit. Happily a number of well-known restaurants and bars within the area have confirmed that they will join in

and we at RTN newspaper will publish details of those involved in the campaign on a regular basis. At previous summits there was a general feeling that there is simply not enough entertainment for young expatriates who could be tempted to spend time together, drinking and possibly being lured into taking drugs. Again a number of eateries and some nightclubs have indicated that they may be prepared to allow youngsters into their premises for special alcohol free themed events with discounted prices off season and when
this is formalised, RTN will also publish details of these special events. A number of different charities were invited to give details of their services in the local area and these included the recently formed Age Concern Marbella, Concordia Aids Charity, Debra Butterfly Children, Malaga Orphanage and Triple A Animal Charity. Charmaine Arbouin the British Consul in Malaga made her first visit to a UNM Summit and together with journalist and web developer Neil Hesketh gave details of the recently constructed Support in Spain website which is aimed at expatriates and their Spanish neighbours who need

Also attending was the head of the Foreigners Department of Marbella Council Oti G Diaz-Ambrona, who announced that there would be a special opening of a 200-square-metre new office in the Exhibition centre at 6pm on Thursday May 17. IT was some 15 months ago that the EWN Media Group acquired the RTN newspaper which had been published on Costa Blanca for nearly 20 years. It was a pleasure to welcome the two editions for Costa Blanca North and South into the family and a decision was made at an early stage that this community-based style and concept of publication would be welcomed in the Costa del Sol. Exactly one year ago therefore, RTN CDS was born and it has evolved quietly and quickly into a paper that is not a dim reflection of its longer established sister paper EWN CDS but is growing its own identity which is reflected in the fact that both readership and advertising is growing with the paper. We welcome information about what is going on be-

FUENGIROL A Council has announced that it is organising an Alboran Sea Conference with an international guest list. T he event will be held at the Peace Palace from September 13 to 16, and will focus on a range of issues related to the resources and sustainability of the Alboran Sea. There are already 50 scientific experts who have confirmed they will attend, as well as 12 Michelin starred chefs. Mayor Ana Mula believes that the conference will be one of the most impor tant events on the Costa del Sol this year, in a ‘meeting of sea, science and culture.’ It will be a real opportunity for Fuengirola to showcase itself on the national and international stage, and to promote itself as a leader of scientific and gastronomic development. Moreover, local businesses and hotels will welcome the opportunity to promote themselves in a vibrant and global environment. Mayor Mula commented: “ We have always been more than just a sun and beach town, that’s why we have promoted so many different initiatives in the area. “ T he council can now reveal that we are organising an international event that will place Fuengirola at the forefront of the sci-

Guardia Civil wades into 340 kilogram clam bust by Tom Woods A 340 KILOGRAM haul of clams has been seized in a joint police raid in Marbella and Manilva. The seafood was found in sports bags without any labelling, and hygiene standards required for the transportation of such goods were nowhere to be seen. In the first swoop, the Guardia Civil surprised two individuals at dawn and intercepted 74 kilograms of clams from a vehicle near a private residence in Manilva. The second raid came from a police inspection of a van in

Marbella, where a full 266 kilograms of clams were found in the trunk, in undocumented sports bags. No kind of refrigeration equipment was found in either vehicle to help preserve the seafood, and there was no information on its origins. The capture, transport and sale of seafood without proper labelling and paperwork is illegal, and a breach of consumers’ rights to know the correct information about produce. Both cases will be brought before the Territorial Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, of the Junta de Andalucia in Malaga.
€150,000 to cover student transport FUENGIROL A is to triple its transpor t g rant for students since they started three years ago. The move has been announced by Youth Councillor Pedro Ve ga , who said ever y effort was being made to help young people travelling to Malaga University.
Last year the council spent €100,000 on the policy (double that o f 2 0 1 6 ) , a n d t h i s ye a r t h e f i g u re will increase to €150,000. In addition, exceptionally performing students have the opportunity to apply for a €300 bonus, as a reward for their progress.
“ T h i s w i l l b e a g re at h e l p to o u r young people and can ser ve as a real incentive for them,” said Mr Vega. All students who wish to take advantage of the scheme must submit their applications by the end of this month.

Beaches get beefed up for summer DIGGERS and other machines were deployed by the Junta de Andalucia regional g o v e r n m e n t t o M a r b e l l a y e s t e r d a y, t o start the beach regeneration work after the storms earlier in the year. The work will be carried out throughout the next month, with the expectation of having the coastline ready for the beginning of June. M a r b e l l a ’s C o u n c i l l o r f o r B e a c h e s , Manuel Cardeña, has overseen the project which will start in Pinillo and spread to the rest of the beaches in the area. The first stage of the works will involve the restoration of jetties and footbridges, as well as strengthening areas where steps and other man-made structures have been introduced. The second phase will see the addition of large quantities of sand to the beaches. It is calculated that 75,000 cubic metres of sand will be added to Marbella’s coastline in time for high season. A budget of €2.5 million has been allocated for beach regeneration along the Malaga Province coast, of which Marbella will receive €710,000.

Age Concern entertains
THE AquaMijas waterpark has been officially opened for the 2018 season, and will boast two new attractions on the site. Councillor for Tourism, Jose Antonio Gonzalez said: “AquaMijas is a showpiece in our town that attracts thousands of tourists ever y summer from all parts of the province for the high quality of its facilities. “We are talking about a company that has been running since 1986, generating employment, boosting the economy of Mijas, and giving opportunities to our young people.” The waterpark creates 130 direct jobs every year and it is known for being family centred, with activities for all ages and tastes. Site Manager Maria del Mar commented: “We have started the season with much anticipation and news, with a new attraction for the most daring, and the installation of a Jacuzzi for almost 30 people.” The Mijas Council representatives who were present praised the collaboration between their Department of Youth and AquaMijas’

Platform derails costal railway plans by Tom Woods THE Platform for the Coastal Train has rejected proposals to extend the Cercanias line (currently running between Malaga and Fuengirola) to Marbella and Estepona. This comes barely two weeks after the state budget set aside €6 million for studies into the project. The Platform for the Coastal Train is made up of the Malaga Confederation of Business Owners, construction associations (ACP), the Aehcos Hotel, and several professional bodies. It also has the political backing of the PSOE, Ciudadanos, Izquierda Unida, and Podemos, as well as of
the Partido Popular on a provincial level. The parties say that extending the existing line makes little sense as it does not provide a competitive alternative to private car or bus travel. They are instead proposing a direct line which connects parts of Malaga Province and its airport in around an hour. The Platform for the Coastal Train has submitted two separate proposals, the first being a 55-kilometre overground railway running parallel to the toll motorway, with lines connecting Marbella and San Pedro. This is calculated to cost €1 billion in connecting Marbella, and €2.37 billion to ex-
tend to Estepona. The second proposal runs closer to the coast and would go underneath the A-7 motorway, costing €2 billion to Marbella and €3.85 billion to Estepona. Studies on both plans are being carried out, with a decision likely to be reached by September. After a meeting of the coastal train group on Monday, spokesperson Violeta Aragon said: “We are not going to get into technical or budgetary matters but we will demand that the train project is a competitive one in terms of the time it takes. “ This is a basic demand and that is why we are calling for a new and direct line.”

Ironman race to bring €10 million to city MARBELLA will play host this weekend to an Ironman triathlon which will bring together 2,500 super-fit competitors. The economic boost of the event to the city is expected to be in the region of €10 million. Many of the athletes (from across the world) arrive several days before the race, and bring friends and family who spend liberally in the area.
Councillor for Sports, Javier Merida, said: “When the restaurants, hotels and other businesses in the city see the impact of this type of event, they are quick to get themselves involved for the following year.” The race takes place on Sunday and as public transport is likely to be affected, locals are advised to plan accordingly.

Abandoned site a headache for council RESIDENTS and business owners are demanding that Fuengirola Council takes action on a large abandoned restaurant space on the seafront. Up until 10 years ago, the property was used for a local branch of McDonalds, but since then no business has occupied it, resulting in a gradual decline into disrepair. Businesses say that the situation is having a negative impact on their premises, pointing to the graffiti and smell of urine coming
from the building. Ciudadanos party spokesperson for Fuengirola, Javier Toro, is to request a council meeting to vote on a proposal that the site be taken over for public use. In 2012 the environmental campaign group Aula del Mar looked set to take over the premises, but it made other plans. For its part the council has responded to say that it has been working on a plan for the site for over a year and that it regularly cleans the area in question.

Sports centre in health cuts storm MEMBERS of the Torremolinos Sports Centre have come together in protest at the ‘dismantling’ of the health facilities there. The gathering took place yesterday (Thursday) in front of the town hall, with those present demanding the rehiring of physiotherapists after their numbers were reduced from 15 to nine in recent months. These patients are mostly neurological and psychiatric patients, receiving aquatic therapy and other treatments for cerebral palsy, strokes, and autism. The reduction of the workforce and facilities in this area is reportedly due to the emergence of several private clinics in the area. As a result several pamphlets have recently been distributed that condemn the ‘unfair competition’ taking place, and there has even been a threat of a lawsuit against the council. Sources close to the council have said: “The Sports Centre is for sports, not for treating the chronically ill. Rehabilitation sessions are not the responsibility of a local authority, especially given what they cost.” The council also points out that most individual rehabilitation treatments in the centre have been carried out free of charge since 2006, angering other clinics.

Child-friendly town has UNICEF in sights A MEETING between council officials a n d s e c o n d a r y s c h o o l p u p i l s f ro m a c ro s s F u e n g i ro l a h a s t a k e n p l a ce with the aim of making the locality a U N IC E F q u a l i f i e d ‘c h i l d - f r i e n d l y town.’ The Child Friendly Cities international initiative aims to promote the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child at a local level, and to encourage cross-border cooperation on the issue. As the project’s website itself says: “Every child and young person has the right to grow up in an environment where they feel safe and secure, have access to basic services and clean air and water, can play, learn and grow where their voice is heard and matters.” T he objective is for governments and local authorities to develop and implement strategies to benefit children and to engage with them in making urban areas more enjoyable and vibrant environments. Among the conditions for becoming a Child Friendly City is the promotion of children’s activities and the provision of adequate facilities for them. GLOBAL VILLAGE: The fair sees Fuengirola become a hub of cultural exchange and celebration.
Cultural carnival in town by Tom Woods THE International People’s Fair (La Feria Internacional de los Pueblos) returns to Fuengirola this week, offering the chance to see the world in five days. It will be the 24th staging of the popular event in which the town celebrates its multicultural and vibrant population. It is a fair which allows people to show off the very best of their country’s folklore, cuisine and culture in general. The festivities will take place from today (Friday) until Tuesday, and will feature stalwarts like Britain, Holland, Chile, and Senegal among others. Moreover, the revelry will also include South
Africa, Serbia, Puerto Rico and Ukraine for the first time. This really is a unique event which has at its heart a community spirit where people are encouraged not to spectate, but to actively immerse themselves in chatting, dancing, and sharing in the cultural offerings of each country. The feria is held in the main fairground of Fuengirola (between its own train station and Los Boliches), and each country is allocated its own caseta (stand). From German beer festivals, Irish dancing shows and rhythmic Cuban music, there is something for every taste. Visitors come to this lively event from afar, making it one of the real calendar highlights of the year.

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy has been wounded after falling from a balcony in Manilva. The child fell from the first floor of a house and remains in care at the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella. According to healthcare services the boy is in a stable condition and awaiting discharge. The incident happened in a building on Calle Pandora, in the San Luis area of Sabinillas, and the Guardia Civil attended the scene.

Echo answers the call BIOPARC Fuengirola has announced that it will be welcoming a new coastal gorilla as part of wider conservation efforts to protect endangered species. The park has been harbouring coastal gorillas for 14 years in an area that simulates the Congo valley. At the end of last year Ernst, an iconic gorilla there, passed away leaving his partner Kim bereft. However, a nine-year-old young thruster by the name of Echo will soon be added to the fray, and conservation workers hope that romance is in the air.

Five arrested in police cocaine swoop OFFICERS of the National Police have arrested five Moroccan men in Estepona for drug trafficking. The detainees are aged between 28 and 48, with two from the Netherlands, and the others from Belgium, Morocco and Romania. Investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly in-
volved in transporting cocaine to Spain from Morocco, hiding it in luggage inside vehicles. Officers seized 1,200 grams of cocaine, €9,050 in cash, four vehicles and eight mobile phones. Police inquiries began earlier in the year when they received information about the activities of the group, and
they were soon able to determine the identity of the men. Further surveillance of the group enabled officers to establish that one of the suspects was in charge of contacting the suppliers in Morocco and acquiring the cocaine, while the others took care of the transportation and distribution.
Rich councils seek green light to spend LOCAL authorities in Andalucia who are not burdened by debt have asked for permission to spend more. The Ministry of Finance does plan to ease restrictions on councils which are running a budget surplus, but the changes can’t come soon enough for some. Reforms would include being able to employ more staff and undertaking investment projects which would normally be ruled out on financial sustainability grounds. Mijas, which has nearly 90,000 inhabi-
tants making it Malaga Province’s thirdbiggest town, has just under €70 million in its accounts and Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado wants more freedom to access the funds. Despite this, Mijas Council actually loses €5 million every year because it is not able to replace workers who retire or go on sick leave. Benahavis has a better bank balance than any other town hall in Spain, (€76 million), and is also seeking reforms to the Junta’s spending ceiling.
Navy headquarters are all at sea IZQUIERDA UNIDA (IU) will shortly present a proposal to Marbella Council outlining plans to convert the city’s former Navy headquarters building into a sea museum. The left-wing coalition claims that the 1,000 square metre building is both underused and poorly maintained. IU will request in its motion that the Junta de Andalucia regional government transfers management responsibility of the site to Marbella Council, so that it can be used for social and cultural purposes.

FUENGIROL A Council is delivering on its plans to eliminate dirt and stains on public roads, with investment in new machinery for the work. The Cleaning department has divided the to w n i n to f i ve z o ne s to carry out the comprehensive project of sprucing up the streets. Ten tr ucks are already in operation and will soon b e j o i n e d b y t wo m o re , with a special grease-removing product smelling of pine being used. MARBELLA Council will once again grant permits to artists who want to perform on the city’s streets. These licences will be provided on receipt of a small fee from the performers, the size of which will depend on the location that they occupy. Those artists caught without a permit are in danger of being fined up to €600, or have their instruments and other equipment confiscated. The number of permit applications has been growing each year, from 18 in 2013 to 35 last year.

MASTER CHEFS: The children are likely to benefit greatly from the initiative.
Chefs and Kids day ready to sizzle A TOTAL of 24 national chefs boasting more than 40 Michelin stars between them will participate in an event called Chefs and Kids day. The initiative, which will raise money for the charity SOS Children’s Villages, was announced at the Royal Hospital of Mercy in Marbella with a gathering of eight of the chefs. Councillor for Community Activities, Felix Romero, has overseen the scheme which also has the support of Sebastian Conejo, head chef of the Los Monteros Hotel, where the event will take place on May 21. Mr Romero said: “This is a project that com-
bines gastronomy and solidarity with the involvement of the best chefs in Spain. “It is a magnificent initiative that next month will showcase our culinary quality internationally, while also giving the proceeds to SOS Children’s Villages to allow them to continue their excellent work for little ones.” Around 150 children at the charity’s day centre will enjoy a variety of activities, interacting with the chefs in different workshops. The children will be taught about ingredients, culinary skills and most importantly the chefs will try to instill a passion for cooking.

ONE of the smallest provinci al capitals in Spain has found its way into the Guinness Book of Records. Ter uel, in spite of only h av i n g a p o p u l at i o n o f 35,564, managed to attract 1,051 people onto the streets to take part in the world’s biggest ‘kissathon’. Among many of the popular folk tales in Spain, this true story of the ‘lovers of Teruel’ surround a Romeo and Juliet-type couple who had similar issues to their more famous counterpar ts... and it is this love that has been celebrated on this record-breaking event. The couple are believed to have died 800 years ago this year and their final resting place - with their statues atop them - sees them lying together in the southernAragón city’s cathedral. And so to mark the anniversar y ye ar, Ter uel soug ht to br ing to gether couples who have come together in life and join them up together, all kissing at once, in the central Plaza del Seminario to show that - in the words of Mayor Emma Buj - ‘Teruel really is the city of love’. Local school gets training SAN ROQUE Council has joined forces with the CEPSA Foundation to launch three workshops at the Sacred Heart School, in the Puente Mayorga neighbourhood. The first is dedicated to the making of puppets (aimed at younger children), and the art of getting the most fun out of them. A second workshop is based around computer science, where students learn basic techniques for using computers and other electronic devices to help them study. The third training session is aimed more at the teachers of the school, analysing the interpretation of emotions, how to act on these, and the reason for students’ moods in certain situations. The CEPSA Foundation is a non-profit organisation working for social welfare.
Bonnie urgently needs a pacemaker - please IN March 2018, Bonnie, a beautiful English Bull Terrier, arrived from Gran Canaria at a local rescue centre for Pitbulls and Bull Terrier breeds. Sadly, it soon became apparent that Bonnie’s heart stops every few seconds for a few seconds and an ECG revealed that she needs a pacemaker. The veterinary specialist for this operation is in Gran Canaria, so she will have to be flown back there for the operation and then brought back to mainland Spain for recovery. She was brought to the mainland because Bull breeds are viewed as dangerous in Gran Canaria and are often just sent to a killing station, which is why Hannah’s Rescue Hounds and the PPP Kennels specialise in bringing these breeds to the mainland. Hannah’s vet and the specialist are flying with her at their own cost, and will stay with her for four days so the pacemaker can settle and so they can be on hand after both flights. 4000 euros is needed, and this is just for the pacemaker and holster, not for her recovery period. So far, Hannah and her team have raised a total of €2000, but the operation needs to be done as soon as possible.
Renovations begin ESTEPONA Council is overseeing a range of projects to renovate the Cancelada district, in anticipation of the pilgrimage of San Isidro Labrador festivities. Works will be concentrated in the Guadalmansa area, where this traditional and lively event will take place on Tuesday. The surroundings of the Pure Heart of Mary Church will be cleaned, the courtyard painted, and the Plaza de la Jose Vazquez refurbished. New fences and waste containers have been installed, and electricity and water units have been inspected for safety.

National Police in demand BENALMADENA Council is calling for state funds to build an overdue National Police station. The PSOE-led coalition government of the town has said that it is suffering from a ‘lack of security services’ because of the problem. Benalmadena currently shares a National Police station with Torremolinos and Security Councillor Javier Marin criticised the national government for not making provisions in its budget for the project.

A RECENT writ of accusation by a Murcia-based prosecutor is a stark reminder that certain illegal practices by toxic tenants, and other occupants of real estate, will not enjoy impunity. The writ refers to a non-paying tenant who - in the middle of an eviction process - chose to retaliate against the landlord by stealing, among other
items, two fans, a mattress, a washing machine, a dishwashe r, h o b s , c u r t a i n s , a c o f f e e machine, a microwave oven, a table and four chairs. The State Prosecutor is asking that the tenant serves a minimum of two years in prison as the value of items stolen exceeds €400. In a similar case, Criminal C o u r t 1 5 i n Va l e n c i a h a s i m posed a 14-month prison sentence to a tenant for misappropriating furniture items and a €3,000 fine for causing damage to various others, consequence of ‘a deep resentment and a direct intention of causing financial and emotional harm to the owner ’, according to the sentencing Judge. In Barcelona, the Appeal
Court (Section 10) passed a prison term on a tenant, who with the intention of causing the maximum possible damage, knocked walls, pulled pipes and cables, broke shutters, tore curtains and generally, left the property in a lamentable state of disrepair. I t ’s w o r t h n o t i n g t h a t i n a l l the rulings, the actions caused by the tenant displayed a deliberate and intentional desire to cause monetary loss to the owner. If the above scenarios want to be avoided by both tenants and owners, it is highly recommended that parties carefully examine the property to be rented and draw up an inventory (photographic or video if possible) before granting possession.

South Africa recently passed laws that allow the state seizure of legally held white-owned assets. No wonder people, who should be paying an interest in politics, avoid the topic even whilst their pockets are plundered; they are bewildered by what is done in their name. Perception is that foreign aid is an act of charity towards nations less fortunate than our own. Nothing could be further from the truth. Foreign aid is the elite’s use of taxpayers’ money to enrich themselves; it is a money laundering

The reason Africans are poorer today than they were in 1960 is because fictional aid is a bribe, an inducement, blackmail. It is the imposition of dependence, an accessory to looting a country’s natural assets. The countries most hooked on providing foreign aid just happen to be running the biggest debts in
the history of mankind. The United States tops the list yet its national debt for the first time has topped $21 trillion. Why is the world’s most indebted war-economy nation with eyewatering unemployment, poverty, suicides, collapsing infrastructure, civil unrest, disastrous health and education services, etc seemingly the most generous giver?
Britain is drastically cutting welfare, pensions, education, social services. It is a country where merely to step into the streets reveals grinding poverty and misery, social deprivation, inequality, yet the UK is responsible for £1 in every £8 spent in global ‘aid’. This year the UK increases its already bloated foreign aid budget by £14 billion. If that worries
you then best not to remember that six-seventh’s of the aid iceberg are unseen. Other clues to look for include overseas development, debt relief, military aid, economic development assistance, disaster assistance relief and suchlike. What most people believe to be charity is investment by the elite with the obligation to return investment in manufacturing and corporate services in which they hold substantial shares. It also secures access to natural resources in which the elite have an interest. Foreign aid greases the palms of arms-buying oligarchs and opens doors to natural resources in which the elite invest. In effect, politicians use your money to invest in lucrative ventures including the arms trade. This is why 77.7 per cent of parliamentarians are millionaires, many are multi-millionaires in a country where only 0.07 per cent of the population have assets exceeding £1 million. Duplicitous parliamentarians occasionally protest but then like pigs to the trough they do whatever is necessary to enrich themselves by perpetuating poverty.

A BRITISH couple have been arrested in Palma de Mallorca after apparently leaving their children on their own for two days in the hotel while they went off drinking, The hotel where the couple were staying hasn’t been named, but security staff notified the authorities when the plight of the young children was brought to their attention. Reports in the Spanish media suggest that the family arrived at the hotel two days before the arrest took place, with the adults said to be ‘constantly drunk’, as they went out all day and night, leaving the children behind. However, the arrested couple were more than aware that leaving children of such an age unsupervised in the hotel was illegal and so allegedly asked another British couple - complete strangers to them - to keep an eye on the children while they went on a series of pub crawls in and around Palma. When they returned - very drunk - the woman is said to have then physically attacked the other couple in public in the hotel, without any known reason or provocation, which needed members of security to intervene and call the police. The parents were immediately arrested and the children taken into care and looked after by the National Police Women’s and Family Unit (UFAM) which is in charge of taking care of children who have been mistreated or abandoned. The mother has been released and taken the children back to the UK, but news of the father is still awaited.

RECENTLY I overheard a gentleman mouthing off in the cafe, about stray and feral cats and how they should be treated as vermin. Had it not been for the fact that I am a pacifist, I would have taken him to task and given him a good slapping. Well alright, he was six foot six, built like Stonehenge and had muscles on his earwax, and that I admit helped keep my temper in check. Woody and I were watching the News at Ten last night (Woody is one of our two rescued felines) and a segment on the Brexit negotiations seemed to catch his close attention. “These are complex matters”, pontificated the self-important Monsieur Barnier, prompting a nod of agreement from David Davis, his grinning face resembling an overripe Cheddar cheese. At which point Woody turned to me with a puzzled look and asked:
CATS: Are more perspicacious than many humans.
“What’s complex about it? Why can’t you all just, you know, trade together freely?” He didn’t actually say that, but if he could have, he would. Woody is a clever cat. You may be wondering what this has to do with strays and vermin, but I’ll get to it.
And Woody was absolutely right. When you get right down to it the only thing stopping everyone in Europe, and the world for that matter, trading happily together and getting along swimmingly, is us. The so-called complex world in which we live has only been made that way by our own inability to co-ex-
ist peacefully and contentedly, and the underlying reason for that is the insidious presence of vested interests. And those vested interests, when distilled right down to their very basic elements, are religion, money and the pursuit of power. “I read in one of your magazines”, Woody went on to tell me: “It has been calculated that if the world’s resources were pooled together, there would be no hunger, no drought, no energy shortages and almost certainly no disease.” Woody is also an avid reader. We live alongside natural disasters such as earthquakes, flooding and tornados, but nothing that nature throws at us compares with the savagery and selfish brutality born out of greed, that we Homo sapiens have inflicted on Mother Earth and each other. Life could be so very simple and fear-free if we just took the time to look around and fully appreciate the bountiful world that we inhabit. And if I see Kong from the cafe again, I will point out to him in my best manly voice, that the most malevolent vermin on planet Earth is humankind - not furry liddle puddy cats.

ried couple, Jim Barry, born and bred in Dublin always had talent for drawing from an early age and so it was no surprise when he ended up studying architecture. This naturally led into a career... in music! For 40 years, Jim was lead singer with Irish group The Memories. “We had a recent get together with all the band members from across the years,” said Jim. “There were 33 others there... and me,” he chortled. Jim enjoyed a long career performing with the group and working with Gene Pitney, Johnny Logan and Gilbert O’Sullivan - among others - and at one stage in their career had a young man as their agent. You may have heard of Louis Walsh? Jim retired to La Mata in Spain just over 14 years ago and went back to his artistic roots, this time performing in front of an easel and canvas

And over those years has produced some stunning work with a completely unique style, considering and to quote Jim himself, “the only brush I’d ever picked up prior to coming to Spain was a broom!” Whereas wife Jan, a talented artist in her own right, prefers country scenes as a base for her artwork Jim’s style is more sky, sunlight and subtle use of dark tones. The RTN asked him whether
he plans his final masterpiece. “I always begin with the end product in my mind’s eye. When I paint famous people, I spend ages looking at photographs taken from all angles so that when I look at the blank canvas I have that person ‘in front’ of me all the time,” he said. What started off as a hobby and painting for pleasure, many of Jim and Jan’s paintings are now sold to an evergrowing and appreciative audience, and their work has
been exhibited locally in Torrevieja and internationally... the most recent of those being in Norway. Over the past couple of years, Jim has moved from his trademark style of what can be described as having a Dickens theme into unique portraits of some of the world’s greatest pop and rock icons. He gave the RTN a sneak preview of his ‘Beatles’ creation that he’s currently working on... it’s superb!

www.thelittlegeranium.com TUNA from Tarifa is amongst the finest tunas in the world. Tarifa is an old Andalucian town best known for windsurfing and tuna fishing and it’s near to the city of Cadiz. Cadiz is regarded by many as the oldest continuously inhabited city in western Europe, with archaeological remains dating back over 3,000 years. It has been a principal port for the Spanish Navy since the accession of the Spanish
Bourbons in the 18th century and is a member of the ‘Most Ancient Towns of Europe’. Tuna seems to love the Atlantic coastline and supplies are plentiful when in season and of incredible quality. When I recently visited Tarifa I ate some of the best tuna I have ever eaten with my Spanish friends but I was concerned about the sustainability and so I spoke with the fishermen. Sustainable fish is important to me because I don’t want to serve fish which is in danger of dying out. Tuna is one of those endangered species. However continuous cross-checking is undertaken by the European Commission to ensure that fishing measures and seasons for fishing the tuna are fully respected by all member states involved and the quotas and control measures are adhered to. The commission also deploys its own inspectors and carries out spot checks at critical moments and so the tuna fishing is controlled and does not endanger the species. Ingredients for two • 500g sashimi grade Tuna • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • A little Maldon salt and ground black pepper • 1 tbsp of grated fresh ginger, then ground to a puree (use a pestle and mortar) or option… • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard • 2 tbsp of sesame seeds
Tataki sauce: • 1 spring onion/scallion, about 1 tbsp chopped spring onion • 1 inch grated ginger approximately 1 tsp grated ginger) • 1 tbsp light soy sauce • Juice of ½ lemon • Juice of ½ orange • 1 tbsp of Mirin (sweet Japanese rice wine, available in most supermarkets) • 2 tsp sesame oil • 1 tsp of white sesame seeds lightly toasted • A pinch of dried chilli seeds or 4 thin slices of fresh mild chilli

cucumber thinly or use a mandolin rice vinegar (or white wine vinegar) white sugar dry white wine
call it sashimi fresh because if you were making sashimi then you would serve it raw and when it’s this fresh that’s the way to eat it! Atun roja (red tuna) is Atlantic bluefin tuna. Tuna is a saltwater fish which belongs to the tribe Thunnini, a sub-grouping of the mackerel family. T h e s i z e s v a r y g r e a t l y, r a n g i n g i n weight from 1.8 kg (4 lbs) up to the Atlantic bluefin tuna, weight: 684 kg (1,508 lbs). The bluefin averages 2m (6.6ft), and can live up to 50 years. The season for red tuna fishing is particularly good now in May and June, especially where there are festivals in Tarifa and Cadiz celebrating the catch. Whenever I buy tuna I like it sashimi fresh and so I need to sell it immediately. One of the most popular tuna dishes in my restaurant is my ‘Tuna Tataki’. Lightlyseared spiced tuna with a soy-based sauce, flavours o f f r e s h g i n g e r, m i l d c h i l l i and mirin (Japanese sweet
syrup rice wine). This week I served Tarifa ‘Tuna Tataki’ with a hand-dived scallop from Cadiz. I love the fresh scallops we buy from there also and so I served a special dish celebrating tuna and scallops from the area. This recipe I’m giving you is pretty quick and easy to prepare and does not include the scallop. If and when… summer arrives it’s the perfect dish quickly seared on the barbeque and then served with the citrus Japanese sauce on the side. The literal translation of Tataki means pounded, which probably comes from the method of pounding the ginger to marinate the fish after it is seared.
Tuna Tataki Method for cucumber Heat the wine, vinegar and sugar in a pan until the sugar dissolves and the liquid thickens a little (5 minutes). Put the cucumber in a plastic container or a bowl and pour the liquid over. When cool keep in fridge.
Method for the sauce Mix all the Tataki sauce ingredients together except for the chilli and allow them to marinate for a day or so in the fridge or at least for a few hours. Add the chilli moments before serving so that it is not too spicy.
To cook the tuna Cut the tuna into two steaks approx 1.5cm thick. Rub the tuna all over with the oil, then season with salt and black pepper. Put the sesame seeds on a plate. Pour a little more oil in a heavy non-stick pan. Sear the tuna for about 10 seconds on each side. Take out of the pan and brush very thinly with the ginger puree or mustard (not both) then roll quickly in the sesame seeds to coat. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
A TASTY TREAT: Fresh tuna.
To serve With a very sharp knife cut through the cling film in either ½cm slices (more traditional) or into 1.5cm pieces like little medallions. I like it this way because I love the texture of the raw fish. Present on slices of pickled cucumber on an oriental style plate (rectangular plate) in a linear (straight) line and then dress with micro cresses. Serve the sauce separately and allow your guests to pour the sauce over their own fish as some people like more and others much less!

THE books I read and the movies I saw as a kid gave me the impression that Spaniards, indeed all Latinos, were hot-headed and fierytempered. Frequent visits to Spain later convinced me that nothing could be further from reality. I got into a conversation about the Spanish temperament when a visitor to Benidorm questioned me about my decision to settle here eight years ago. He wanted to know how I managed to adapt to life among ‘foreigners’. “Most of them are OK,” I replied, “but I prefer living alongside the Spanish.” I was parroting something I’d said to others who asked the same question. Usually, the penny drops immediately, but at other times I’ve had to explain that “YOU will be the foreigner (extranjero), and it’s your choice whether you integrate or live in an expatriate bubble of ignorance as far too many choose to do.” His next question was “so, what do you like about the Spanish?” I replied it was their calmness, and pointed out that since moving here I have only seen only one street

Keep calm dear, you’re in Spain fight. It was between two old geezers in their 80s and it was sparked by dog poo. When one failed to bag up his dog’s excrement on a seafront walkway, the other, strolling behind, scooped it up with a paper napkin, seized the pooch’s owner, and ground the mess into one of his hands. All hell broke loose. The poodle looked on with mild amusement. I can cite numerous instances of Spanish tranquillity that would profoundly irritate Brits or Americans, but my favourite was the example set by Santiago Carrillo, leader of Spain’s Communist Party, almost 40 years ago. On February 23, 1981, around 200 Guardia Civil, in a failed plot to overthrow the government, burst into the Spanish parliament brandishing sub-machine guns. They fired bullets into the ceiling and ordered MPs to lie on the ground. Carrillo refused; he remained seat-
ed and calmly lit a cigarette. Carrillo died in 2012 aged 97, suggesting that seven decades of chain-smoking, combined with a determination to always keep cool, might well be the answer to a long and productive life. He attributed his iron constitution to the advice given him in Moscow in 1936 to take an aspirin every day. The Englishman grilling me then asked whether there was anything in the Spanish make up that ever got up my nose. “Sure, several things but mainly the fact that sometimes their tranquillity is enough to make me hurl a brick through a stained-glass window.” Case in question: on a hot July day last year, sweating like a sinner in church, I boarded a crowded bus. I was in a desperate hurry to get to my bank before it shut. As I was the last passenger to board, I assumed that we would set off immediately. No. One other person at the bus
KEEP COOL: Santiago Carrillo. stop shouted to the driver to wait until he’d finished the cigarette he’d just lit. The driver said “vale, tranquillo”, turned on a football broadcast and waited ‘til the fellow had finished his fag. In any other country, passengers in a sauna on wheels would have gone ballistic and pelted the driver with anything that came to hand, but no one batted an eyelid. That said, I was hugely thankful a few weeks later for this ‘tranquillidad.’ I spotted a bus a few hundred yards up the road and sprinted to try and board it before it made off (it
was the last one of the evening and I was anxious to get home to walk the dogs.) To my relief, the driver, with the longest dreadlocks I’d ever seen outside of Brixton, was standing in the street, nonchalantly dragging on a spliff. “Tranquillo,” he said, flashing me a brilliantly white smile, then, when we boarded, he asked what music I would like him to play. All I could think of was the Stereophonic’s 2009 number ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’. He’d never heard of it, so instead I was treated to 15 minutes of Bob Marley.

Here we answer your questions on this important issue. How does the sun effect the eyes? The eyes are affected by the UV rays of the sun in a similar way to the skin, and even short term exposure can cause problems with your vision and increase the chance of developing serious issues such as cataracts, macular degeneration and eyelid cancer. The effects were revealed in 2017 after a woman looked directly at the sun during the eclipse for just six seconds and permanently damaged her retinas. How do we protect our eyes? Sunglasses! Most people don’t think of sunglasses as a way to protect the eyes, but they are the main tool in stopping UV damage. You need to be as vigilant when choosing sunglasses and deciding when to use them, as you are with applying sun cream and ensuring that skin is protected. When do you need to protect your eyes? You need to make sure that eyes and skin are protected from all three types of UV radiation (UVA, UVB and UVC) throughout the year and take particular care when you’re in wide open spaces and on the beach or on the ski slopes where UV rays are reflected from the sand, sea and snow. By choosing sunglasses with 100 per cent UV protection, large or wraparound styles and combining with a hat you will get maximum protection from UV related eye problems. IVF found to cut birth defects risk for older mothers A STUDY has found that women aged 40 or over are less likely to have babies with birth defects if they conceive by IVF. Older women have a higher risk of babies with conditions such as Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy, but a study’s findings suggest that IVF children born to older women have less than half the risk of birth abnormalities than those conceived naturally. The study looked at births in south Australia from 1986 to 2002 and found birth defects in 3.6 per cent of babies born to women aged 40-plus using IVF. This compared with 5.7 per cent for all naturally conceived births. The researchers said this implies a previously ‘undescribed protective mechanism’ but could only speculate as to why. The findings cannot be attributed to the use of donor eggs from younger women as this was excluded from the study. IVF: Fewer birth defects for older mothers conceiving in this way.
Painkillers could affect your nurturing THOSE addicted to painkillers may not find babies cute. While this may not seem a big deal, doctors claim this is a dangerous sign of how drugs can manipulate the brain. The human tendency to find babies cute stems from our drive to nurture and protect, but a study by the University of Pennsylvania (USA) found that babies do not trigger any emotional reaction in addicts. The researchers said that opioids prescribed for pain are some of the most common medications in the world, but they appear to change the brain’s response to baby cuteness, which may change the motivation to care for others and could mean a more serious cognitive imbalance. Addiction to opioids, both illicit drugs such as heroin and pain treatments, affects over four million people in the USA. Their use is often associated with reduced responses to natural rewards, as well as abnormal social behaviour, but could also affect basic human instincts, according to the study.

I SEEM to have found a new mission in life. Only a few years ago everyone wanted to know how to buy fruit and veg in the market, how to order food and drink and how to identify cuts of meat. I was pretty good at the first two, never so good at the dead animal thing, but I managed to make a living out of going over and over basic phrases to help people ‘get by’ in Spanish. In recent years there has been a dramatic change in my working life on many fronts, but one of them is to do with the type of Spanish language people are now wishing to learn. Most of the people I come into contact with have managed to get by in Spain for a year or two and are now

Introduction to present simple keen to move forward and understand the language in more depth. I put this change partly down to the shortage of new English-speaking people moving to Spain at present, but mostly because the ones who have been here for some time seem to have got themselves into a huge muddle about grammar. So now I spend most of my time trying to sort them out, and getting the message across that Spanish grammar isn’t as difficult as it looks - it’s just different! In view of this, we’re now going to look at one of the most basic aspects of Spanish grammar which is the verb in the ‘present simple’ tense. In English this simply means saying things like ‘I go, you go, he goes, we go, they go’ and so on, for every verb you can think of. We mainly use this tense to talk about things that are habitual or part of our daily routine (I get up at 7am, I
start work at 9am etc). We also use it to describe general truths about the world. (The sun rises in the east; the world is round, my mother lives in Wales). In Spanish it has one or two more uses, but all I’m concerned about for now is that we all know what we’re talking about. Now if you look at our English example again (I go, you go, he goes, we go, they go) you will notice that we make no changes to the word ‘go’ at all, apart from ‘he goes’ and ‘she goes’. To communicate the information about ‘who goes’ we have to place the person word, in front - ‘I, you, he, she, we and they’. In grammar these person words are called ‘personal subject pronouns’, although you don’t need to know that to use them. Now the Spanish language does all this rather differently, because that word ‘go’, and every other verb as well, changes in form depending on
‘who’ is performing the action. Also, because of this change of form, it is not that important to place a person word in front. The form of the verb itself gives us the information about ‘who’ by the way it has changed. L e t ’s l o o k a t a n e x a m p l e w e a l l (hopefully) recognise, so that you know what I mean. ‘Tengo’ - most of us know by now means ‘I have’ and ‘tienes’ means ‘you have’ in the familiar form. If we wanted to be more complete we would say ‘yo tengo’ (I have) and ‘tú tienes’ (you have) as ‘yo’ means ‘I’ and ‘tú’ is the familiar word for ‘you’. However, because the words ‘tengo’ and ‘tienes’ are completely different from each other and recognisable, the Spanish do not usually bother adding the person words as well, unless they want to be particularly emphatic. This is basically why English-speaking people find Spanish verbs so difficult: it is because they function in a fundamentally different way from English. My mission over the next few weeks then is to explain how they do work and hopefully dispel some of those clouds of confusion that have accumulated over the years!

sport ANDALUCIA SUB-14 rugby team became the first side to win the inaugural Spanish Championships at Sub-14 level. In a thrilling final against Madrid in Puertollano, Ciudad Real, the boys from Andalucia prevailed, winning 12-7 in the final. Having won their group matches on Saturday against Asturias and Castilla y Leon, Andalucia played a strong Madrid side in the final who had beaten Valencia, Cataluña and Galicia. The final was a hard, tense game of rugby, with Andalucia scoring in the first five minutes to go seven points up, but when Andalucian captain Alberto Carmona was sin-binned for a tip-tackle Madrid fought back to make the score 7-7 at half time. After the interval Andalucia constantly attacked the Madrid line and eventually scored a try in the corner. Andalucia should have gone further ahead but missed some good opportunities and in the end their strong defence stopped the Madrid side from scoring any more points. Marbella’s Vuelta venue confirmed THE Vuelta a España stage in Marbella will officially begin from the Piruli at the Plaza Monseñor Rodrigo Bocanegra, it has been announced. Marbella is set to host the second stage of the Vuelta on Sunday August 26 and it had been thought that the stage would begin in Puerto Banus. But Marbella Council has now announced that the stage, the first the city has hosted since 2015, will begin at the Piruli area in the Plaza Monseñor Rodrigo Bocanegra. After departing from the plaza, the stage, which is close to 164 kilometres, will cross through the Paseo Maritimo before climbing through the Huerta de los Cristales and Serenata, with the stage finally coming to a close at the Caminito del Rey. Lions Golf World Cup and European Championship 2018 LIONS from 17 countries and as far as China came to Spain to celebrate the Lions Golf World Cup and European Championship 2018 which was hosted by the Lions Club and Tourist Board of Mijas. The 72 participants enjoyed, in perfect sunny conditions, a number of cultural events and golf on two of the best golf courses - Los Lagos and Los Olivos - Andalucia has to offer. One of the targets of this event was to generate donations for the Lions Clubs International Fund to eradicate the measles virus which causes blindness in children and can even lead to death. The proud winners of the golf events got rewarded with exclusive handcrafted watches by Carl F Bucherer for the three net categories A/B/C and the gross champion of the Lions European Championship 2018 as an individual event. The Lions Golf World Cup was a TEAM event (two players from the same country). The final gala turned into a golden event, thanks to the Bucherer team with all the special prizes and the golden decorations for the delight of over 100 guests. With the sunny weather, great golf courses, super entertainment and all the friendly people, the event became an outstanding success everybody would like to experience again in the near future.

motoring BMW Motorsport continued the development of its new BMW iFE 18 Formula E model with a test at the Calafat circuit in Cataluña. The race car is equipped with a drivetrain exclusive to BMW, and will compete in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in 2019 in the first series for fully-electric racing cars. Bruno Spengler was behind the wheel of the iFE 18 at the 3.2-kilometre circuit, and the 2012 DTM champion completed a comprehensive testing programme. BMW’s first 100 per cent electric car made its world debut in a testing session at its driving academy in Maisach, near Munich recently. After months of collaboration between production engineers and racing developers, the results are now being seen. The engine is 50 per cent lighter and 66 per cent more compact than the BMW i3, and the car’s test at Calafat went smoothly. Driver Bruce Spengler said: “In a project as new as this one, the initial tests are primarily about Credit: BMW Group gaining experience. “For me,
BMW iFE 18 electrifies the competition as a driver, it is very special to be involved here from the word go and working on the development of a new car is a unique task.” The 2019 season of Formula E will see BMW join Jaguar Land Rover, MercedesBenz, Nissan, Mahindra, and Porsche AG on the starting grid.
